Jeremiah (2002) s02e14 Episode Script

Interregnum: Part 1

1 Previously on Jeremiah Can you tell me where I go to sign in? I'm here to join up.
- What's your name? - Tad.
I killed Libby.
It wasn't Jeremiah's fault, it wasn't anybody's fault but mine.
You've got to tell Jeremiah.
He can never find out about this.
It would destroy him.
Follow Daniel to victory, or stand helplessly beside the alliance.
It's begun.
Three Hills is gone.
Looks like they swept in and killed everybody they could find and scared everybody else away.
(Markus): That's why Sims wasn't at Cold Creek.
That's why the diversion.
What if it's a three-pronged attack? Where's the third one? (Sims): Yes? - Are your men in position? - They are.
We're ready to begin phase two.
Is this close enough, sir? Couldn't be better.
I don't think this is such a great time for this, Smith.
We've got troops coming in.
Daniel's troops are on the move.
I know, but you have to see this.
- Why? - Yeah, why? - Yeah? - You just do, that's all.
It's important.
Have I ever led you astray before? - Yes.
- Yes.
Well, this isn't like those times.
Jeremiah? You got a second? For you, Frank, freedom of the press, Milhaven Gazette, I'll give you two.
With everything that's been going on lately between you guys and Daniel's group, word is you're headed for a face-off any time.
I don't know, Frank.
It's up to them as much as it is us.
What I do know is that we can not let Daniel turn the world into a place of forced labor and executions.
I'd like to shadow you for the next few days.
In case things heat up, I want to be there to write the story.
If Daniel wins, you're not going to have a newspaper to write for.
I won't get in the way.
You'll barely know I'm there, and when you want me gone, just say so.
Okay.
But not now.
Okay.
Thanks.
Hey.
Hey, everybody.
Welcome to Milhaven.
I'm Gina, Jeremiah's aide and liaison to the troops stationed here, and I know some of you are a little nervous.
You're a long way from home, but you're in good hands.
The best.
Now, if you'll come with me, I'll get you set up.
Let's go.
- So you know this place? - Yeah.
You've been here before? A few times.
And you never mentioned it because The time wasn't right, but now it is.
You sure get around, don't you? I keep busy.
It's me.
(locks unlatching) Come on.
They're kind of quiet for kids.
Yeah, they're like that here.
I've seen that girl before.
Decontamination procedures don't work.
We have to burn the bodies.
What bodies? The darkness is coming.
There's no one left to play with anymore.
That's Rose.
She came to us last winter.
Just in time, too.
This is Jeremiah and Kurdy.
They're friends.
Of course they are.
You wouldn't have brought them here otherwise.
Do you mind my asking you, what is this place? Come with me.
I want to show you something wonderful.
Okay, everyone, move it along.
The good people of Grandview are waiting for these supplies.
They'll be happy to see your smiling faces and know that they are safe from all that is bad in the world.
- How's it going? - We're an hour behind schedule, two of the new recruits couldn't make it, because, well, they get car-sick, and during the load-in, we dropped a box of grenades.
- Excellent work.
- Yeah, I thought you'd be proud.
All right, move them out! It's been 15 years since a strange disease wiped out all of the adults and left us kids to fend for ourselves.
Now I'm moving ahead, through the past.
I can't let go I'm holding hope so tight It's hard to breathe when the whole world falls I'm gonna put the stars back back up in the sky Let them all just shine down I'm gonna try I believe we'll find the world together Through your eyes That's all I can see I believe we're looking at forever In a world where we can be free I believe Well, did we find out what happened to our trucks? It looks like a shoulder-launched rocket fired from somewhere in the hills.
The team we sent out came under fire from the same area and had to retreat.
Damn it.
It's Daniel's group.
It's only a matter of time before they moved on us.
It could be two guys, it could be a whole platoon out there.
We should call back the recruits, - get them to comb the area.
- No, no, no, they've used diversionary tactics before.
That may be what they want.
I can't risk pulling our troops back from that border.
- Are we locked down? - Completely.
Then there's no way they can get in here.
They could drop a 20-megaton nuke.
It wouldn't dent the front door, but we should inform the others, and the sooner I know where Daniel's troops are, the better I'll feel.
We're safe here, for now, at least.
Sir? We've heard from the advanced unit.
They dropped the hammer on Thunder Mountain.
- Any response from inside? - Not yet, sir.
There will be.
They're probably still trying to figure out what the hell hit them.
We've drawn first blood.
Keep your ear to the ground.
Word will be getting out soon.
Tell our people to move the heavy equipment uphill, find shelter from prying eyes among the trees.
Do not fire again unless absolutely necessary.
Do nothing to give away their position.
Yes, sir.
Our goal is to keep Markus' forces pinned down.
With their helicopters grounded, our forces will advance freely.
Yes, sir.
After the Big Death, as the survivors came to maturity, the babies started coming with them.
These are kids having kids.
They didn't know what to do.
A lot of children died from neglect, lack of information.
As I'm sure you know by now, some people survived the Big Death, those lucky enough to have a natural immunity.
When we saw what was happening, we, the women who run this place, came together to help the next generation to be born.
So what is it, like a hospital or a school or something? A little of everything, actually.
Girls who can't take care of their children hear about this place.
They seek us out and leave us their children.
They're a cross-section from every walk of life.
Call it a sampling, if you like, and that was how we discovered what was happening.
Excellent.
You may sit down.
Now, as you can see, the equation spells out the series of assumptions behind the first laws of thermodynamics, which states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another.
Okay? Good.
Now, let's turn our attention to the next problem in your books.
These kids should be in kindergarten, first grade, and they're doing college-level math.
I know.
Come We discovered that children born after the Big Death were smarter than they should be, smarter than they had any right to be.
Is it possible that the virus altered their DNA somehow? I think there are checks and balances in the world.
The human race was dealt a terrible blow by the Big Death.
It'll take a lot to get things running again.
Call it divine intervention or the luck of the draw, either way, the problem has also presented us with the solution.
These children represent a tremendous hope for the future.
Out there, they don't have the resources to use their intelligence, to grow into their role.
They don't have the chance to show what they can do, but in here, and in a few places like this, they do have that chance.
There is a war coming, Kurdy, and if that war comes here, all that could fall away.
That's why I wanted to show you this place.
I hate to interrupt, but there's someone at the front door asking for you.
Sir, I know you said for us to wait back at the road, but we just heard on the radio.
Thunder Mountain is under attack.
Jeremiah, Markus wants you in Milhaven to coordinate things from there.
Tell him I'm on my way.
Look, I want a tactical group stationed here, effective immediately.
Anybody from the wrong side comes by, I want them stopped, no matter what.
Anything else you know that we should know, Smith? Maybe later.
Thank you.
That was the right thing to do.
There's the future to protect.
There won't be a future if the Mountain falls, Smith no future at all.
(Lee): Markus, I just heard what was happening.
Now's not a good time, Lee.
This is exactly the right time.
We have to set aside whatever problems you and I have had in the last year.
I ran security for this place for 10 years.
I know every rat hole in and out of here.
I know where we're vulnerable.
I know our defense capabilities.
Whether you want to admit it or not, you need me.
Erin's doing a fine job.
I won't take her off the job - just because - Erin was the one who sent me.
You're sure you want to do this? Better the devil you know than the devil out there.
I won't let you down again, Markus.
I swear to you on my life.
I won't disappoint you.
All right.
Fill me in on the way.
We still have the helicopters.
As far as I know, they don't have access to the launch area.
I recommend we send out a chopper to investigate, see if we can hit them from the air (Frank): The first strike against the Western Alliance comes with a bang, and with a whisper.
The whisper of strategy.
The whisper of concern.
The whisper of secrets.
They speak too softly for me to hear, because I am only a guest and excluded from knowledge I should not have, but, significantly, they have not asked me to leave.
The two in charge of things here, Jeremiah and Kurdy, have the easy, relaxed relationship of old friends.
They seem to have a shorthand with each other.
They must have gone through quite a bit to learn it.
The third, Smith, seems almost not to fit in with them, though he tries desperately to keep this from becoming obvious, as if there is something standing between him and them, between him and the world.
I can only make out one word, infinitely repeated The mantra of Jeremiah's grief over the loss of Liberty Kaufman, a name that has become synonymous with rage Sims.
I still say we need to send some troops back to the Mountain.
No, Markus is right.
He's safe there.
We don't know that for sure, Jeremiah.
Yeah, we do.
As long as he's got the door closed, he's fine.
Everything else is just a diversion.
We got to be ready when Sims makes his move, because he's going to make it here.
The bastard killed Libby.
Makes it personal.
So, no, we do what Markus says.
We form a line east of here and we just hang back, see what happens.
You agree? Yeah, makes sense.
I read a book once.
It said that we'd reached the end of history, that everything big or important that was going to happen had already happened.
If that's true, maybe the years since the Big Death was like the world resetting itself, and now history's starting all over again.
I think that's maybe why my watch started up again.
There's a word in latin for it.
I heard it once, a long time ago, for the time between when a king dies and the new king takes over.
"Inter" something, I don't know.
Interregnum.
That's the one.
Maybe that's what the last 16 years have been, an interregnum.
Once, I read about You have to tell Jeremiah.
Tell him what? The truth, about what happened to Llibby.
Jeremiah's not stupid.
He knows you're hiding something, and that's getting in the way of us doing what we're going to have to do.
If I tell him that she was working for Daniel, he'll never believe me.
He'll kill me.
The thing is, I could live with the "he'll kill me" part better than I could knowing that he'll never believe me.
Saying that I could live with him killing me is a bit of an oxymoron, but I believe you.
And I got your back.
- I can't.
- You can, and you will, or I will.
Jeremiah's right.
Sooner or later, Sims is going to come, probably sooner, and when he comes, he's going to bring a lot of his close personal friends with him, and I don't Look, I don't know what's going to happen when that day comes, but I do know this I have never lied to Jeremiah, and I feel like I'm lying to him now by staying silent, and before he goes face to face with this guy, he has the right to know the truth, to know what he might get himself killed over.
But now's not a good time.
I mean, with everything that's going on It's never a good time for the truth.
You tell him or I will.
You got till tomorrow night.
The reconnaissance chopper's away.
Base to Recon One.
Can you see anything on the infrared? Negative.
Running coldniel on all fronts.
It's hard to navigate in here with all the canyon winds.
That's the problem with this region.
It's full of caves, switchbacks, pockets you could hide a whole platoon inside.
Thunder Mountain was designed to fight a nuclear war, to hit targets 8,000 miles away, not an enemy parked right on our front door.
Stand by.
I'm picking something up.
Confirmed.
We've got a hot spot.
Coordinates 14 by 4 (warning beep) Missile shit.
(curses) We've got incoming.
Taking evasive action.
I can't shake it.
I can't shake it.
It's coming right up on my tail, it's right on top of me.
It's going to hit! Heat seekers.
They have heat seekers.
Markus, it doesn't matter.
We can keep those doors closed for months if we have to.
We've got food, water, energy, and several hundred heavily armed recruits ready to go the moment we open those doors.
We can wait them out.
Can we, Lee? I'm not so sure.
I'm not so sure at all.
Who's there? Daniel says hello.
(Tad): Daniel says the key to defeating Thunder Mountain is to wall them in.
We have more troops, more guns, more training, more resources on the ground.
The Mountain started too late.
They have only one advantage, air power.
We haven't been able to bring planes and choppers to bear on this because they've been sitting outside, rotting, for 16 years, but the helicopters in here are still in working condition.
If we can ground those choppers to keep Markus from using them outside, we win.
It's a sure deal, So when the time comes, and the attack begins, we must make sure that nothing goes wrong by keeping them too busy on the inside to even think of going outside.
Sir? You said to come and get you when we're ready to move out.
Do you ever read much poetry, John? Poetry? No, sir.
It's not exactly my thing.
No, I haven't been much of a "poetry" kind of guy.
Too bad.
I am.
Well, not that there's anything wrong with it.
Just myself, personally, I've never read a lot of poetry, sir.
So the name San Juan de la Cruz means nothing to you? Pretty much.
Is he a poet? "The conditions of a solitary bird are five "The first, that it flies to the highest point.
"The second, that it does not suffer for company "Not even of its own kind.
"The third, that it aims its beak to the skies.
"The fourth, that it does not have a definite color.
"The fifth, that it sings Very softly.
" You know that nothing in there rhymes, right? Tell the others I'll be right there.
Yes, sir.
(bird sings) (wings flapping) You look like a man with a lot on his mind.
Anything new from the world outside? We got a report a little while ago.
Some of Daniel's forces were seen in a town 30 miles south from here.
Well, that's great.
We finally know where they are.
No, we don't.
But you just said that you according to the report, they saw 10 soldiers in two trucks.
They came through town, made a lot of noise, and left, only to come back a second time an hour later.
No, these guys wanted to be seen.
So you're saying it's a diversion.
Probably.
But you can't be sure.
My gut tells me they want us to go on a wild goose chase, divide our forces more than they already are.
These guys are smart.
This is a setup for something bigger.
You think they'll come here? I don't know.
Maybe.
Is that what you'd do? Yeah, I would.
I would tie up the Mountain, make it difficult to coordinate defenses, make sure the choppers couldn't get in the air, and then I would strike here, right in the heart of what we're trying to build.
A symbolic victory on top of the real one.
Something like that.
Excuse me, I got to do something.
See, the thing about symbols is they work both ways.
Let 'em come.
(Frank): And for 10 minutes, not one other word was spoken by anyone.
Markus, we've got someone on the line who wants to talk to you.
- I'm busy.
- It's Sims.
This is Markus Alexander.
Identify yourself.
You know who this is.
What do you want? We are on the precipice of great and terrible things, Markus.
A great many lives will be lost or saved, depending on you.
Go on.
I'm listening.
My forces are 10,000 strong, Markus, and more are coming to join us all the time.
It could be altogether possible for you to mount a defense with similar numbers, but ask yourself, how many will die on the day our two sides meet? So what do you propose? All in good time.
I just wanted to put those numbers in front of you, remind you of the consequences, should all come to a head.
Keep this line open.
I'll be in touch with the rest of it when the time's right.
He's got a card up his sleeve, something we don't know about.
I want everything double and triple checked.
Make sure our weapons are up to snuff.
Whatever he has in mind, I don't want to get caught napping.
I'm ready.
Something wrong? What is it? There's something you need to hear, Jeremiah.
When I first got into the church, I heard them talking, something about a radio.
At first, I didn't even know it was Libby, but when I saw her and she walked up to Sims, and (Libby): I wanted to see you.
(Sims): Daniel appreciates everything you've done.
She was working for him the whole time, watching us, using you.
She said no one would believe me because of the way I am.
And she had a gun.
We both did.
I tried to talk to her.
I tried to get through to her, and I thought I did, for just a moment, and then she turned I didn't even I didn't even know I'd hit her at first.
I just fired blind, and when I went up afterwards to see (gasping for air) I couldn't do anything.
There was nothing.
You killed her.
She was working for Sims.
- Jeremiah, no.
- You're lying! I'll kill you! Get off! (curses) Smith! You are going to die! (Kurdy): No! Smith, go! Get out of here! Go! Let me go, Kurdy! Jeremiah, I'm sorry.
God damn you! If I could've done anything Smith, get out of here! Unit Four, moving into position.
You copy, Unit Two? Confirmed, we're on it.
Boss says we have to be in position by midnight.
(beeping) - Yeah? - It's me.
Yeah, I figured.
What do you want? Particularly nasty weather we're having, Markus.
Not that you'd know, I suppose, being stuck in that steel and concrete hole in the ground.
Well, it's a perfect day in here.
No snow.
No rain.
No you.
What more can a man ask for? (radio crackles) There's blood on the wind, Markus Alexander.
A lot of people are going to die.
How do you propose we stop that? I want you to know I have been authorized to accept your surrender.
In return, I can offer immunity for your men, provided they pledge allegiance to Daniel.
I'm giving you a chance to walk away while you still can.
That's funny.
I was going to give you the same offer.
Our forces will be within striking distance very soon.
We have you outnumbered, outgunned, Thunder Mountain locked down, impotent.
There's no point to this fight, Markus.
We have no desire to slaughter your people.
Daniel says Daniel doesn't exist.
I don't believe I heard you correctly.
There is no Daniel.
His image, his voice, his history, it was all created by other people.
You're in service to a lie.
I suppose you can prove this? All in time.
I'll get all the proof we need, or you can get it yourself.
You can ask to see him.
He's a busy man.
Of course.
I guess that's why he's never met in person the one man who is in charge of his army.
If I were you, I'd be asking myself this question How this guy in a concrete hole in the ground knows that you've never met Daniel? Unless he doesn't exist.
If a beautiful woman tells you you're handsome, does it matter if it's true or not? You stand a little straighter, feel a little taller in your shoes.
You don't turn away from the mirror quite as quickly as you used to.
What I found has given me purpose, a focus, a divine mission.
I know someone who'd disagree with you.
This conversation is over, Markus.
I've given you a way out.
Stand down and we will show you we are merciful.
Stand against us, we will sweep down on you like a mighty wind.
We will erase you and everyone you love.
Your choice.
How did it go? He said about what I thought he would say.
Which raises the question, why say it at all? In war, you have two choices, fight or surrender.
He didn't give us any options we didn't already have.
Well, maybe he wanted to distract us.
Keep us focused on the threat outside so we don't think about anything closer to home, because in the last 24 hours, I've found over a dozen examples of sabotage.
Cars, trucks, equipment, you name it.
Could be just one guy, could be a lot.
Either way, we've got trouble outside and in.
You okay? Yeah.
I know you don't want to believe it, Jeremiah.
I don't want to believe it either, but it all tracks.
I didn't want to believe it.
Why would anybody want to believe it? (sighs) I wanted to prove it wasn't true, that he was lying, so I went upstairs.
I was looking around.
(sighs) She had a radio hidden in her closet.
God damn, man.
God damn.
Look, you know It doesn't matter who pulled the trigger that night.
It doesn't.
It was still Sims who killed her.
He pulled her in, he turned her out, he got her working for him.
He's the one responsible for this.
All Smith was doing was trying to protect himself.
If he hadn't fired back, he'd be dead right now and we would have somebody in our camp - that we couldn't trust.
- I know.
- We can't afford that.
- I know.
I don't want to see Smith right now.
I don't want to see him, I don't want to hear his name, even knowing what I know, I can't guarantee what'll happen.
You got it.
You see, that's the thing about guys like Sims, they corrupt everything they touch.
Since day one Everything that we loved or cared about, they either killed it or turned it against us.
No more.
Tried to cut our head off by taking out the Mountain.
First chance I get, Sims is a dead man.
Hey.
Jeremiah's going to need some time, you know? I appreciate what you did.
If you wouldn't have been there, there would just be a Smith-shaped smear on the carpet.
So what do I do from here? Well, he doesn't want to see you for a while.
Maybe a long while, probably not until Sims is dead, and I think that's the only thing that's going to even things out, let him move on, get on with his life, you know? Yeah.
Yeah, I know.
Where are you going? For a walk.
Take care of something.
- You heading out? - Yep.
When are you coming back, so I can tell the guards? Right after I kill someone.
How are you doing? I'm better.
I've just got to get past this.
I know that now.
Anyway, I've got this thing working.
Some kind of communication's coming in, but it's in code.
Might come in handy later.
Big time.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Look, Kurdy, what I said to Smith The thing is, I believe you, and if you believe him, that's good enough for me.
He got shot doing something I could never have done myself, and I know that.
- So if he's around - He's not.
He took off sometime during the night.
Where the hell did he go? I don't know, man.
I've asked around.
Nobody's seen him.
I just hope he stays out of trouble.
You tried to kill me.
You understand I'm inclined to take that rather personally.
Are you working all alone, or have others come with you? Are you on orders to try and kill me, or did you come up with this fanciful notion entirely by yourself? You cannot touch me.
You cannot hurt me.
No? Then what do you call all this? Besides damned entertaining? You know, it's hard to be sure, 'cause it was dark when we first met, and now your face is a bit reminiscent of five pounds of ground round, But I do believe I've seen your face before.
You're that fellow who thinks he gets messages from God.
Where is your God now, little man? Why would he allow you to be captured, beaten, turned over to his enemies unless He has forsaken you? Why don't you ask him yourself when you see him? I don't think you'll have to wait long.
I ask you, what kind of a man sends an insane person to attempt an assassination? At the very least, send somebody respectable.
I consider this downright rude.
He's not worth a bullet.
I should fillet him, but he's too small for the frying pan, well below the legal limit.
Throw him back in the water.
Time we were on our way.
Tell the group captains we'll hook up at four roads, dawn, friday.
Then we go in.
We've got a war to win.
