Law & Order: Los Angeles (2010) s01e04 Episode Script

Sylmar

NARRATOR: In the criminal justice system the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups, the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.
These are their stories.
(MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO) Okay, Billy, watch your sister.
Mommy will only be gone a few minutes.
But I don't want to stay in the car.
Be a big boy.
All right, I'll be right back.
(CAR LOCK BEEPING) (DOORBELL RINGING) (BABBLING) (SIREN WAILING) The house was rented to a Ronnie Powell.
He's not on the premises.
His kids? No.
That's the mother there.
Kimberly Miller.
Nobody in the house or the garage.
The kids were the only victims.
REX: Thank you.
Mrs.
Miller, I'm Detective Winters.
This is Detective Jaruszalski.
Can you tell us what happened here? I pulled into the driveway with my kids, just to drop something off for a friend and (SOBS) I was only gone a few seconds.
I tried to save them.
This is not your fault, okay? Was Ronnie Powell home at the time? Yes.
After the garage blew up, he just ran to his truck and he drove away.
He just ran away? Was he injured? I don't think so.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God, my husband, he's at work.
He loves those kids so much.
How am I going to tell him about this? It's okay.
Can you get Ms.
Miller some O2? (HYSTERICALLY) I don't know (CRYING) Is that what I think it is? The arm of a beam scale.
Also found a hot plate, crude ventilation system.
A meth lab.
No wonder Ronnie Powell hit the road.
KIM: (SCREAMING) Oh, God! My babies! Word to the wise, if you're going to drop in on your friendly neighborhood meth cooker, leave the kids at home.
Ronnie, the guy who lives here, he left his sunglasses at my work.
And one of the other cashiers knew that I live near him, so she asked me to drop them off.
Look, if you were here to pick something up, it's okay.
But we need to know.
Pick something up? Like what? Ronnie was cooking meth in his garage.
That's why it blew up.
I didn't know anything about that.
His sunglasses, what did they look like? They had plastic frames and dark lenses.
Powell's got priors, possession for sale.
Nothing violent.
Well, he's in the majors now.
Meth lab elevates these homicides to murder.
Hey, look at this.
Ronnie must have come through here to answer the front door.
Left some meth cooking in the garage.
Hey! Looks like our boy's packing.
Check out what he left behind.
Those don't look like plastic frames to me.
Mmm-mmm.
I told you they had Dark frames and like, black lenses.
Your friend at work, she'll confirm? Why would I lie? I lost my kids.
Who is this Ronnie they're talking about? Ronnie Powell.
It was his house.
What is it, Mr.
Miller? I, uh I played softball with a guy named Ronnie last year.
That's where you were? At Ronnie's? That loser! REX: Back off, Mr.
Miller! Back off! You'll never get through this holding onto a lie.
I was seeing him.
You left Billy and Nikky in the car? You whore! Billy and Nikky are dead, Kim! And you killed them! You killed them! TJ: Let's go.
Now! KEVIN: You killed them! Do you know where Ronnie is? I don't.
Please believe me.
I swear I Oh, God.
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry.
(SOBBING) Do you have a friend you can stay with? You can't stay here.
That miserable scumbag.
(SIGHS) I even invited him over for a barbecue once.
I saw the way that he looked at her.
I should have known.
What do you know about him? Um, he lived with his mom out in Reseda.
I drove him home after a game once.
I started the day with a wife, two beautiful kids.
Now I got nothing.
ELLEN: Ronnie moved out last year.
Is he okay? Yeah.
There was a fire in his garage.
We're trying to reach him.
Is he in trouble again? (CLEARS THROAT) Can I have a glass of water, Mrs.
Powell? Of course.
You seem pretty clear-headed about your brother.
I take it he was doing something illegal.
He was making methamphetamine.
I love my little brother, but he's always been a godless screw-up.
I don't really know any of Ronnie's friends.
I'm sure he'll be home soon.
I don't think that's realistic.
There was equipment in his garage for making drugs.
Oh! Not my Ronnie.
It's probably for his model airplanes, you know, the ones that you fly with a radio.
It's his hobby.
We didn't see any planes in his house.
You've actually seen him do this? No.
But UPS delivered some of his supplies here a couple weeks ago.
Nah, we don't move as much model airplane inventory as we used to.
Number one hobby is video games now.
Oh, yeah, here it is.
Two orders for Ronnie Powell, shipped UPS Ground to Reseda.
What exactly did he buy? Four boxes of Zeta Max.
It's fuel for radio controlled model planes.
"99% pure nitromethane.
" That stuff's the gold standard for your model airplane buff.
And your truck bomb fans.
Tim McVeigh mixed nitromethane with fertilizer, made a hell of a nice bomb.
We don't know yet why the lab blew.
But it wasn't nitromethane.
I was on the scene within a half hour.
Spent nitromethane leaves a distinct odor tag.
I would've been able to smell it.
Which means Ronnie's running around with 64 gallons of bomb juice.
Can't wait to find out what his real hobby is.
TJ: The Bomb Squad estimates that mixed with fertilizer, Powell's bomb would have a quarter-mile blast radius and leave a crater 15-feet-wide.
Or take a chunk out of a skyscraper.
Any sign that Powell had a beef with the government? Nothing political at his house.
For all we know, he could have a grudge against Kobe Bryant.
Gonzales.
Tell them to watch, but don't touch.
I'll send in the Bomb Squad.
Patrol car in North Hollywood spotted Powell's Bronco parked on Calvert.
There's nothing but houses there.
He might be holed up with a friend.
Check his cell phone for a contact in the area.
TJ: Police! On the floor! Now! What's your name? Jack Bryce.
Where's Ronnie? I don't know.
He was sleeping.
(WHISPERING) He's in the crawl space.
Ronnie? You sure you want to be crawling around under there with all the dead critters? Hey, Ronnie, we got rats trained to go into tight spaces to get guys like you.
RONNIE: No! Wait, wait, wait.
(GRUNTING) OFFICER: Hands behind your back.
Don't move.
Ah! I hate rats, man.
No model plane fuel in the house or his truck.
It's still out there somewhere.
That other guy Bryce, just a meth head.
He doesn't know squat.
This might get Ronnie to open up.
The lab found traces of denatured alcohol in the cook pot of his meth lab.
Hmm.
I am so sorry about Kim's kids, but it wasn't my fault.
That's not how the tune goes, Ronnie.
Your meth lab, your murders.
TJ: How's the model airplane thing working out for you? You ordered I don't know what you're talking about.
The stuff you had delivered to your mom's house, where is it? Nowhere.
I didn't order anything.
REX: Your buddies have the fuel? What buddies? I don't know.
The ones who tried to kill you? Our lab found denatured alcohol in your cook pot.
Who was in your garage, Ronnie? Just my sister's fiancé.
Your lab, they got it wrong, okay? Every cooker knows, you use denatured alcohol in your cook pot, you're going to blow yourself up.
It's why I use hydrochloric TJ: So now you get it.
Who has the plane fuel, Ronnie? Okay.
But I want a lawyer, all right? And you get a D.
A.
down here with enough juice to cut me one sweet-ass deal.
I'm not cutting him any deals.
He killed two kids.
Someone sabotaged his meth lab.
That's what caused the explosion.
Probably the same people stockpiling fuel to make a bomb.
I'm sure you can find them without Ronnie Powell's help.
Powell mentioned his sister's fiancé.
Go with that and see where it gets us the next 24 hours.
Okay, Counselor? My fiancé's Terry.
Terry Walker.
TJ: He ever in your brother's garage? Well, when he first drove out here, I took him to meet Ronnie, but I don't remember if he went in the garage.
Terry's not from California? South Carolina.
How'd you two hook up? A swap meet last summer in Arizona.
We stayed in contact by email.
He drove cross-country just to propose to me.
That's sweet.
What does he do for work? He's at a campground in Topanga until he gets back on his feet.
Then he's going to buy me a ring.
You mind showing us where in Topanga? Now? Yeah.
I have two hours left on my shift.
We'll talk to your boss.
LAPD? Is everything all right with Amy? She's fine.
I just want to ask you about her brother.
Oh, yeah.
Can you believe that guy? Yeah, well, he says you were in his house.
Did you notice what he was doing in the garage? Amy's car needed some wiper fluid, so I poked my head in there to see if Ronnie had some.
And, well, it wasn't my place to say anything to her.
TJ: Right.
Amy says you drove all the way from South Carolina to be with her.
TERRY: Straight across the country on l-40.
Never met anybody quite like her.
This your truck? Yes, sir.
Oklahoma plates? You drive both vehicles out here by yourself? (CHUCKLES) No.
I bought the pickup in Tulsa on my way out and towed it from there.
Ask a dumb question.
We might have some more questions to ask you about Ronnie.
Sure.
You mind taking Amy back to her job? No problem.
Glad to be of help.
Thank you.
The ball on the RV doesn't match the hitch on the pickup.
Somebody else drove that truck.
Campground office said Terry Walker checked in two months ago with two other men driving the pickup.
They haven't been seen in a week.
Here's another lie.
Walker said he came straight out on l-40.
Well, he got a speeding ticket in Minnesota and a parking violation in Indiana.
Zigzagging all over the country.
Check this out.
The parking violation was two blocks away from AgriSave Farm Supply Store.
I bet they sell a lot of fertilizer.
Terry's got more on his mind than wedding bells.
Terry seems like a nice enough young man.
But, well, I've learned not to get too attached to Amy's boyfriends.
She plays the field? It's more like the field plays her.
Any man that comes along, she just follows like a lost puppy.
Does Terry keep anything in the house? Well, he brought his suitcase with presents for Amy.
REX: Mind if we have a look? Please.
Oh.
That dress is one of the presents.
Amy refuses to model it for me.
It's an abaya.
It's a traditional dress worn by Arab women.
Is Amy a Muslim? Gracious no.
Of course not.
Does Amy spend much time on the computer? Hobbymeister.
com.
Site of choice for your model airplane enthusiast.
It is the duty of all true Muslims to defend their brothers and sisters.
Every time an infidel soldier dies in Afghanistan, I thank Allah that another crusader has gone to hell.
Amy, put down the flowers.
What? Why? You're under arrest.
But Terry's picking me up.
He's taking me to Red Lobster tonight.
TJ: Not tonight.
What are you godless people looking at? You're the guilty ones! America is killing Muslim women and children and you do nothing! You should all burn in hell! Our warmonger president is killing innocent Muslims, instead of giving us peace like he promised.
America will learn to respect Muslim people and the holy laws of Sharia.
She asked for a Koran, then lawyered up.
If Sharia won't save you, there's always the US Constitution.
What about her fiancé? He skipped the campground after we left, but we found this on her computer.
Blue-eyed all-American jihadi terror cell.
With enough explosives to take down the Staples Center.
LAUREN: If they know what they're doing.
Walker would.
He's Army Reserve, demo unit.
Nothing on the other two.
You know the lab's got facial recognition software, to mine the net for matches.
It may help.
Look at this, last week Amy did a search for an address in Sherman Oaks.
Satellite and street views.
Safe house? Or target.
LAPD.
Who are you guys? Off-duty from Simi Valley.
We're doing private security.
Homeowner got death threats.
I show-run Town Square, the animated series? I wrote a Three Stooges parody with Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed.
Needless to say, some people took offense.
Needless to say.
We got the usual death threats from Muslims.
Then some of the Christian groups threatened to boycott the advertisers, that's when the network got nervous.
The rent-a-cops, they're my wife's idea.
These people look familiar to you? Yeah.
Her.
She was in my coffee place last week.
She was staring at me.
These threats, they're for real? Your wife had the right idea.
So she put some videos on the internet.
You have a problem with free speech? Your client does.
She was stalking a cartoon writer named Jason McParr.
He insulted the Prophet.
Your plan was to kill him.
Don't answer that.
Maybe punishing him is what you wanted, Amy, but Terry's got enough explosives to take out the whole neighborhood.
Terry doesn't kill innocent people.
He tried to kill your brother.
And he killed two little kids instead! Terry is purer than all of you.
Our love is blessed.
And I would rather cut out my own heart than let you hurt my beloved.
Your client better snap out of it.
She's facing two murder charges unless she helps us find her beloved.
Talk about Miss Lonely Hearts.
That woman's pathetic.
Facial recognition found matches for Walker's pals.
A Joey Pine and his brother-in-law, Roger Hagen.
Hagen did federal time in Indiana for putting a bomb in a mailbox.
And check this out, his old cellmate has a welding business, right up the 5, off Roscoe.
I haven't seen Hagen since parole.
Last I heard, he was in Saint Paul.
He's in LA now.
Hard to believe he wouldn't look up his old cellmate.
Yeah, well, Hagen knows if I associate with felons, it will violate me.
Yes, so will lying to us, Mr.
Wilson.
Now you got a nice little business here.
Don't mess it up.
He came in last month, just to shoot the breeze.
REX: Did he tell you he's a Muslim extremist now? Oh, jeez.
Okay, yeah.
He came in with another guy.
They paid me cash to cut some metal plate to spec.
They say what it was for? To seat a stamping press.
They said they were setting up a shop.
You still have the specs for those plates? Yeah.
Yeah, he kept calling.
Said everything had to be ready before Thanksgiving.
Here we go.
He picked these up three days ago.
What do you figure's the footprints on that RV? Looks like the steel plates could fit on the floor of Walker's RV.
The fuel and fertilizer mix sit on top.
The blast gets directed up and sideways.
Yeah.
It's a classic truck bomb design.
But that's a lot of fireworks for a cartoon show.
Hagen leave a number or tell you where he was calling from? No.
No.
Couple times I could hear planes taking off.
Asked him where he was, he said he was in a groovy bar with lava lamps everywhere.
Yeah, they've been in here three times the last two weeks.
Some lost-Iooking road warriors.
Business travelers, that's what they told you? Yeah.
From Omaha.
You know, khaki pants, golf shirts, wheelie suitcases.
They always sat at the same table.
Table 11, by the window.
Thank you.
Yeah.
TJ: Clear view of Terminal 7.
Thanksgiving, busiest travel time of the year.
If they stick to the script.
REX: They are turning Terry's RV into a bomb.
They're reinforcing it with steel plates to kill thousands of people, Amy.
Families going home for Thanksgiving! Terry wouldn't kill all those people.
He wouldn't.
Amy.
Your heart doesn't lie.
Terry was a good man.
But those other men, they turned him and they twisted your love for an evil purpose.
Roger Hagen must have made him do it.
JONAH: Tell me about Hagen and where we can find him.
I don't know that much.
He found a girl on craigslist who was renting out a big garage.
Betty, in Westchester.
OFFICER: Get down on the floor! Get down! REX: Get down! On the floor! (OFFICERS SHOUTING) This is the bomb.
It's okay.
It's not armed.
First time inside a bomb.
Cell phone triggers.
These guys were damn near ready.
JUDGE: The defendants are charged with conspiracy to commit murder with a weapon of mass destruction and two counts of murder.
How do they plead? Not guilty on all charges.
I'm no murderer.
I'm a Muslim soldier! (CROWD MURMURING) Quiet.
No grandstanding for the media, Mr.
Walker.
People on bail.
No bail, Your Honor.
The defendants plotted an attack on LAX.
Amy Powell was unaware of any such plot.
She was a victim, duped by Mr.
Walker with a promise of marriage.
A victim of romance, Your Honor? I plead guilty myself.
Miss Powell bought explosives.
She made anti-American videos.
First Amendment, Judge.
She's free to make videos.
I'm free to order them held without bail.
If I may, Your Honor.
Robert Schuler, Assistant US Attorney.
This is Army Captain James Locke.
He has an order to take custody of the defendants.
On whose authority? Executive order from the Department of Defense, signed by Judge Roger Buso of the First Circuit.
Your Honor, we were given no warning of this.
We ask that you stay the order until we can file a motion.
All due respect, this court doesn't have the authority to stay an order from a federal judge.
He's right, Mr.
Dekker.
Much as I resent this high-handed intrusion by our friends in DC, I have no choice but to surrender the defendants.
Yes, they are taking them right now.
Jerry, we need to pull the Attorney General out of his meeting.
No, that's ridiculous.
Are you just going to let them bully us? I see.
Right.
This is nuts, Dekker.
I spoke with Amy just before the arraignment.
Convinced her to cooperate.
Amy denied knowing anything about the LAX plots.
She saw Walker tamper with her brother's meth lab.
She can tie him and his buddies to the kids' murders.
Mr.
Tasker was denied access because he's no longer her attorney.
Miss Powell and her co-defendants will be assigned new counsel for a trial by a military commission.
A military trial? Where? At a secure military facility.
By order of the Executive Branch.
This is unprecedented.
I need to get a statement from Amy Powell.
I have to deny your request.
Military detainees are beyond your reach.
I can't even tell you where she is.
Fine.
Then have one of your people take her statement.
Sorry.
As a military detainee, whatever she says is classified.
I need her to convict Walker for the murder of two children.
That won't be necessary.
Mr.
Walker and his friends are going to be tried for treason.
Their intent was to give aid and comfort to our enemies by killing civilians and paralyzing air transportation.
So they won't be tried for murder.
No.
The LAX plot trumps everything.
If you convict them.
How many terrorists have your tribunals actually convicted in the past 10 years? I have a hundred murder convictions.
Not only won't you bring these men to justice for murder, you're interfering with my ability to make a case against them.
Mr.
Dekker, I have kids, too.
If anything happened to them, I'd hate to see it go down this way.
It's out of my hands.
I looked it up and in 10 years, they've had four convictions out of 20 cases and two of them are already free.
Nothing we can do about it now.
Blessing in disguise, Joe.
You saw Walker.
If we had a trial here, he'd turn it into a soapbox.
And security? We'd have to throw a ring of steel around downtown.
Yeah, but on the flip side, Jerry, they're gonna say you gave up to the Feds without a fight.
And two dead kids won't get justice.
Are you seriously going to let that happen? If I were a political man, I would hedge my bets.
These offenders committed crimes against the people of Los Angeles.
They should have a public trial here, not a secret one in some cornfield.
And so the District Attorney of Los Angeles County will go to Federal court to dispute the military's jurisdiction.
How do you answer those who say that trying terrorists downtown creates the risk of an attack? New York City has tried hundreds of terrorists in their courthouse, with no incidents.
No reason Los Angeles can't handle the same security challenges.
No disloyalty, Joe, but you're pushing a boulder up Laurel Canyon.
You sound like you don't think it's worth pushing.
REX: What a circus.
TJ: For a motion.
Imagine a full-on trial.
Dekker should let the Feds handle it.
Yeah.
I want to see Walker's face when the jury drops the hammer on him.
Well, speaking as a former jarhead, the military can drop a hammer on him as hard as anybody.
In secret.
My father escaped a country that made secret trials an art form.
I'll take this circus any day.
Mr.
Dekker, are you aware the ACLU came out and supported your motion today? What can I say, Kathleen? The ACLU sometimes gets it right.
Our argument's simple, Your Honor.
The Defense Department has no jurisdiction over the defendants.
They are American citizens who violated California law.
And committed treason against the United States.
That charge is just a device to hijack the defendants out of our jurisdiction.
It's no device and it's not unprecedented.
Adam Gadahn, an American citizen who joined Al-Qaeda, was indicted for treason in 2006.
By a grand jury composed of civilians.
There's nothing a military tribunal can do that a civilian court can't do better.
The military can interrogate Mr.
Walker and his accomplices without the constraints of procedural niceties like Miranda warnings.
Walker faced the death penalty here and still refused to cooperate.
Is the Colonel saying that the military will use harsher interrogation techniques than the threat of a death sentence? One thing a tribunal can ensure is there won't be any grandstanding by the defendants.
We have rules to enforce decorum.
Your Honor, these crimes were committed against the citizens of Los Angeles.
They have a right to be represented by a jury that will determine guilt or innocence.
Some worry a trial will provoke our enemies.
But our enemies will act regardless of how we exercise our freedoms.
It is only through the open administration ofjustice, by seeing justice done, that our freedom is ensured.
REPORTER ON TV: You're watching live as the accused LA terrorists are turned over by military police to county authorities.
I'm an enemy combatant.
I demand to be treated under the terms of the Geneva Convention.
Be careful what you wish for.
We're in good shape.
Amy Powell's agreed to testify against Walker.
I'm not worried about that.
Have you seen Walker's new attorney, Lane Garfield? He's represented Hamas, the PLO.
He's going to turn this into a terrorist pep rally.
I will handle it.
How? By gagging him? Hmm? You know, I'm doing my best to convince myself that you haven't put your personal ambitions over the interests of this office.
Bring the jury in for opening statements.
One moment, Your Honor.
The People are dismissing all charges related to the conspiracy to bomb LAX.
We're trying each defendant on two counts of murder, that's it.
No terrorism case.
(PEOPLE MURMURING) How can they do this, Your Honor? I don't see why you're complaining, Mr.
Garfield.
Your clients are facing fewer charges.
Let's get on with it.
This trial is not about terrorism, politics, or ideology.
It's about two little kids from Sylmar, Billy and Nikky Miller, who were incinerated when these men tried to murder a drug dealer named Ronnie Powell.
The evidence will show that with malice and intent, they caused the explosion that killed these innocent children.
That's it.
Mr.
Garfield, are you ready to open? Yes, Judge.
My clients are on trial because they tried to wake this country up to the fact that our government is killing innocent Muslim women and children in our name.
We will prove that what the State calls terrorism are acts of self-defense.
Objection.
They are not charged with terroristic acts.
Sustained.
Mr.
Garfield, limit your statement to the murder charges.
We will prove that these murder charges are nothing but an attempt to distract the American public from the true murderers.
The drone operators Objection, Your Honor.
JUDGE: Sustained.
Mr.
Garfield, since you have nothing more pertinent to say about the charges, let's get to some testimony.
I pulled into Ronnie's driveway with Billy and Nikky in the back.
I parked up against the garage door and I told my kids that I'd be back in a few minutes.
What happened next, Mrs.
Miller? I was in the house with Ronnie and we heard an explosion that shook the whole house.
And I ran outside.
And my car was burning.
And my babies were inside.
And I ran over, but there was nothing I could do.
Thank you.
My sincere condolences.
Mrs.
Miller, you would have done anything to save your babies, isn't that right? Yes.
Committed any act, no matter how shocking, to spare them? Yes.
So if someone else committed a shocking act to save other children Objection, Your Honor, he's defying your ruling.
Sustained.
Ronnie found out that we used his name to buy supplies on the Internet.
He told me he wanted money or he'd make trouble for Terry.
So what did you do? I told Terry.
The next day he had me go into Home Depot and buy two gallons of denatured alcohol.
And what did you do with this alcohol? I gave it to Terry.
A few days later, we went to see Ronnie.
Terry apologized to him and promised him some money.
To patch things up, he brought some lamb chops to barbecue.
I was in the backyard, cooking with Ronnie.
I went looking for Terry.
I found him in the garage.
He was pouring the alcohol into a pot that Ronnie had set up on a hot plate.
What, if anything, did he say? Terry said he was making sure that Ronnie couldn't make drugs anymore.
He told me not to tell Ronnie.
He told me if I loved him, I had to obey him.
He fooled me into believing that he loved me and that we were going to get married.
The whole time he was just using me.
Thank you.
Your witness.
GARFIELD: I have a photo marked Defense 4, taken by the police of a drawer in Mr.
Walker's RV.
Amy, could you tell us what you see in the corner? Oh, my God.
It's a ring.
An engagement ring.
Now, Amy, you testified that Terry instructed you to buy denatured alcohol.
No.
That was a lie.
I did it on my own.
And you testified that you saw Terry pouring the alcohol in Ronnie's meth lab.
No.
No.
I did it.
It was all my idea.
Terry had nothing to do with it.
So why'd you lie about it earlier? I I didn't want to get the death penalty.
I'm sorry for what happened to those little children.
It was all my fault.
Nothing further.
Amy, who instructed you to use your brother's name to buy fuel to make a bomb? Objection.
I thought this trial wasn't about a terrorist plot.
He's right, Mr.
Dekker, you set the ground rules here.
Sustained.
Amy, before you became Terry's fiancée, you had to convert to Islam, correct? Yes.
A very strict form of Islam, correct? Yes.
You learned what was expected of you as a good conservative Muslim wife, right? Yes, I did.
You learned that you had to obey your future husband.
And to seek his approval before making any important decisions, correct? I was happy to give myself to him.
You had to ask his permission before buying a piece of furniture.
Yes.
Going on a trip? Yes.
Killing your brother.
Isn't that an important decision? Wouldn't a good wife ask her husband's permission before doing such a thing? You wanted to be a good wife, Amy.
So you got Terry's permission before trying to kill Ronnie, correct? He asked you a question, Miss Powell.
It's all right, Your Honor.
She doesn't have to answer.
Whatever your feelings about Amy Powell, whether pity or contempt, her testimony raises reasonable doubt.
And if that's not reason enough to acquit my clients, let me give you another more compelling one.
You were denied your right as a jury to hear all the evidence.
Mr.
Dekker prevented you from hearing evidence that my clients were motivated by the killing of Muslim innocents, by collateral damage from American artillery, American Predator drones, American Hellfire missiles.
None of these defendants got a fair trial.
And for that reason alone, you should acquit them.
About some things there can be no doubt.
There's no doubt that Amy Powell is a woman whose loneliness makes her prey to those with evil intent.
There's no doubt that by whatever instrument, Terry Walker is responsible for that explosion at Ronnie Powell's house.
And finally, there is no doubt about this.
The taking of innocent lives is never justified.
Whether it happens in a valley in Pakistan or in a valley 10 miles north of this courtroom.
And it is only right and proper that someone speak for these innocent victims.
Today you can speak for two of them.
Speak in a single and clear voice that will pierce the fog of fanaticism and self-righteousness.
And as pure an expression of our justice system as this trial has been, it still needs you to put the final piece in place.
Murder is murder.
Let everyone watching this trial know it.
As to Count One, the death of Billy Miller, how do you find? We find the defendants guilty of Murder in the First Degree.
As to Count Two, the death of Nikky Miller, how do you find? Guilty of Murder in the First Degree.
You think that's going to stop us? Take him out.
There's more of us where we came from! Take him out! Look around! We're everywhere! The message is done! The message is done! The message is done! We're everywhere! (TERRY SHOUTING) I just want to thank you, for everything.
Just so you know, it may be years before they face execution.
But you will get a call.
