Life of Crime (2013) s01e02 Episode Script

Episode 2

Are you a lesbian or something? Come on, darling.
I'm Denise, by the way.
Amy.
She was found dead yesterday morning.
It wasn't me.
I'm innocent, I've been fitted up.
She has it in for me.
Bail him while the drunks go for analysis.
But - But what? He's out.
That's it.
You see this? This is everything I know that you don't.
Maybe the boys'll find something.
Who knows? We're gonna charge Holland with the murder of Amy Reid.
Go, go, go! Police! Police! Stay where you are! Hey! My name's Denise.
What's your name? Keila.
Keila.
Will you come with me, Keila? Three, two, one.
These are on me.
That scumbag we brought earlier is filing a complaint.
We obviously didn't kick him hard enough.
Seriously, though, today is what it's all about.
We give a lot to this job and sometimes it's actually worth it.
- Cheers.
- Cheers.
Have a good night and I'll see you tomorrow.
Thank you for today.
Hello? You're up late, young lady.
Mummy! Sorry, that's my fault.
How was your day, missy? Good.
Teacher's given me a form for you to fill in for a school trip.
Thanks, Mum.
Big Billygoat will give the troll a good kick up the arse.
Do it, Nana, do it.
I hate fakin' billygoats.
Hate them.
Hey.
Sorry, I had to buy a round.
Didn't expect to see you home.
If you'd called, I'd have kept a plate warm for you.
What'd you make? Meatballs.
Mmm I can heat that up if you want.
No, it's fine.
It's cold.
It's just food, Ray.
Yeah.
Hey.
Hey, come here.
Hey There's wine open.
I'm gonna take Mum back.
You have it, put your feet up.
I was thinking she should stay over.
Why? I've got an early tomorrow so I can't take Charlotte to school.
I can do it.
Really? Yeah.
I'll move some stuff around.
Mum? Come on, I'll drop you home.
Charlotte's teacher is going on maternity leave.
OK I've no doubt that they'll replace her with some young 'un with big earrings.
And then she'll be off having babies and the other one'll be back.
Still, it's good being a teacher.
Finish up at a nice time every day.
Not like police officers.
Mum, if you're finding it hard keeping up with the school run, we can always - No, you will not.
There'll be no nanny while I'm still alive.
Fine, no nanny.
It's just, you seem to be busier than Ray.
Ray's only a DS, Mum.
All this coming and going.
Always in a hurry.
And for what? Well, times have changed.
Daddy always makes pancakes on Friday.
Really? I can't see the mix.
He makes them in a bowl with eggs.
Really? Daddy knows how to make them.
Ask him.
Well, he's at work at the moment.
I'll ask him next time.
What about some cereal? What kind? Mmm really, really sugary kind.
Yay! Don't tell Daddy.
DI Woods.
Yep.
What is it? OK.
I'm on my way.
Sorry, darling.
Hi, Mum, it's me.
I need to ask you a favour.
Good morning, ma'am.
Morning.
Were you the first on the scene? Yes, ma'am.
Where is she? Just this way.
Morning, guv.
Morning, Kothari.
Right, do you wanna bring me up to speed, Constable? Shopkeeper found her when he brought the bins out at approximately Er7:40am.
You all right? Yes, ma'am.
Is this your first dead body? Yes, ma'am.
Right, well, you found her and then what? I checked her for signs of life and she was cold.
No pulse.
And you've already called for an FME to certify the death? Yes, ma'am.
You've done everything, then.
Well done.
There's no signs of blows and no blood.
Small bruise.
She's still got her watch and her rings on.
It's not robbery.
'You have 12 new voicemails.
To listen to your messages, press one.
' 'It's Jonny.
I didn't mean to scare you.
I followed you because I needed to see you.
I know you want me to see you.
That's why you leave your curtains open.
You didn't have to shout at me.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Just just call me.
' OK, what have we got? John Richards, known as Jonny is considered a threat to himself and has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, diagnosed bi-polar one.
OK, let's at least hear what he has to say.
I could've saved her.
Is that why you followed her, to protect her? I don't know.
OK.
So, you followed Lauren Where? To the Hive, yeah.
It was open-mic night for singers.
She was on the list.
I just wanted her to see me.
Know that I'm always there.
But I was thrown out.
Why? She was talking to this guy and I went up to them.
She shouted at me.
Told me to go.
Then there's this bouncer there and he's grabbing me.
I didn't start anything.
Honest.
I believe you.
Go on.
That's it.
Throws me out, tells me to piss off home.
And did you? I was in by 11.
Ask my nan.
Always am.
Part of my agreement, you know.
My contract of behaviour.
OK.
Thank you.
Release Mr Richards, please.
Lab test results on Lauren Hinds.
Swabs from her face and torso came up with a good result.
Good samples of saliva.
From her attacker? Potentially.
The samples were cross-checked against the DNA database.
There is a sample that matches, but it's got no name attached to it.
An unidentified individual from an old case.
A case from .
.
'85.
Victim, Amy Reid.
Amy Reid? No, that's impossible.
There was no DNA testing for Amy Reid.
The database didn't even exist.
It says here Mike Holland appealed last year, so samples were recovered from Amy Reid's stored clothing.
They didn't find his DNA, but they did find examples of this other guy.
At the time, the jury turned down Holland's appeal because they said the original evidence in his van held strong.
But this changes things.
And the fact this other guy's DNA is on both girls - well, it's gotta throw the whole Amy Reid conviction into doubt.
Anyway, CPS already know.
Holland's legal team are trying to fight for an unsafe conviction.
They reckon he's gonna be out in no time.
OK.
Thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen, I do have a statement.
My client is grateful for the swift over-turning of his conviction and prompt release.
Of course, it's impossible to quantify 12 years of a life spent in prison, for a crime he did not commit.
We will, of course, be seeking substantial damages from the police service who brought about this miscarriage of justice.
That's all for now.
Thank you.
Well, it seems that .
.
that the DNA recovered from Amy's clothing .
.
confuses things.
So somebody else killed her? Er We we don't know.
There would be a new investigation.
I know this is this is very hard.
But because you were suspects in the original investigation, they'll want a DNA sample of you.
This is wrong.
But Holland is guilty, isn't he? Sorry.
DI Woods.
It's Kothari.
The end results from Lauren Hinds are in.
I'm on my way.
Er I have to go.
Of course, you'll be informed of any any developments.
Only thing we've had to hang onto is knowing that .
.
that she got justice.
Lauren Hinds, 18 years of age.
Post mortem confirms internal bruising consistent with rough intercourse.
High levels of alcohol.
Cause of death, strangulation.
The presentation of the victim indicates that she was dumped on-site.
So she was raped and murdered elsewhere.
- Guv? - Yeah.
Erm I want the murder scene.
And that means pinning down all of her last movements.
Right, guys, you heard the governor.
Let's get on with it.
Sorry, guv.
I know it's none of my business, but .
.
are you all right? Yeah, you're right, Nabeel.
It's not your business.
Yes, guv.
Sorry to disturb you, ma'am.
But there's a DR Gainham looking for you and he says it's urgent.
Long time.
Yeah.
How are you? Busy.
Course you are.
Apologies for the interruption.
What can I do for you? Hard copy files in the Holland investigation.
I checked the registry but found you'd signed them out.
Yeah.
The Director of Professional Standards are looking into the Holland case, what might've gone wrong.
Right.
And you're? I'm heading up the investigation.
Oh.
Well, well done.
Yeah, you'll be good at that.
Yeah, well, I enjoy it.
And the investigation files into the Amy Reid case.
We'll most likely open it again.
Glad to hear it.
I have a report from Trevor Ferguson on my desk.
You mean Superintendent Ferguson? From 28th September, 1985.
The day you arrested Holland.
There appears to be some discrepancy as to whether you should've even been in the building that day.
Do you have an accusation to make? No.
Good, cos I need to press on with my investigation.
Sure.
But given that the DNA in your Lauren Hinds case is connected to the Amy Reid case and that's clearly under question, it's more than likely I'll be taking both the investigations.
I'll be in touch.
Guv? We've got her.
Right, looks like the bouncer guy that Jonny told us about.
Two streets from the Hive club, 1:35 in the morning.
So, he throws out Jonny, he waits for Lauren to leave and then he follows her.
This has gotta be good, right? Yeah, yeah, it's good.
Er see if the cameras pick her up further down the road.
Erm I'll be back later.
Thanks for meeting me like this, guv.
Don't thank me.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a coincidental meeting on the way home.
So, I haven't seen you for what? Four years? Now all of a sudden, we're on a secret date.
What's going on? The DPS are looking into the Holland case.
Think you'll find they're looking into you.
Take it you've had your visit from the snake? Gainham? He's been doing the rounds.
I need to stay on this Lauren Hinds case.
Don't look at me.
They've got me tucked away, advising bureaucrats at Whitehall till my pot runs out.
But you know people.
Why don't you take the easy option? Huh? Back away? Let them run with it.
So what? Because I need to stay on the case.
Why? Because Well, for one, the Denise.
Why? Because I messed up.
Whoever killed Lauren Hinds killed Amy Reid.
Amy was I was with her hours before sh I owe it to her.
No, you don't.
You owe it to yourself.
OK, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks, guv.
What for? Oh, how's Ray? Ray? He's fine.
Why? No reason, you know.
Guys like Ray, they're the smart ones.
Happy being DS.
Time for their families.
Time for themselves.
Hm? I'm home.
Hey.
We need to talk.
Gainham been to see you? No, but I've had a heads up from the Fed Rep that the bloody DPS really think they've got a case to be answered.
What is it? What is it that you're worried about? I I can't.
Can't what? Erm I can't.
Can't what? They're, erm I just I don't want you to be involved.
Involved? What the hell does that mean? There are there are just there are some things that you wouldn't - That I need to deal - Come on.
Denise, it doesn't work like that.
Don't shut me out.
This is about me, too.
I know what that case meant to you, that the family trusted you.
I was there.
But, you know, these things happen.
New evidence comes to light.
You can't take it personally.
I planted the evidence, Ray.
What? I went to Holland's van and I planted the evidence.
I knew he did it.
And so, when the van was in the car park, I I knew it was wrong, but I could I know it was wrong and I - Stop.
Stop.
Stop.
And I went to his van and - Just stop! Jesus I know.
Do you have any idea what this could do to us? The both of us.
I know.
We put a man away on that evidence! I know.
Ray, I'm sorry.
12 years Ray, please - 12 years.
You've sat on that.
You've put my career on the line as well as your own.
Yeah.
You didn't have the respect to share it with me.
I didn't know we would be making a life together then.
But we did! I know.
I'm sorry, I know.
I know.
Please, Ray, I really I really need you right now.
I'm sorry.
Please don't please don't go.
I need you.
Please, Ray.
Fuck Fuck! Morning, guv.
Hey.
Where are we with the bouncer? Ah, yeah.
We canvassed the club.
A lot of people said they saw Lauren Hinds talking to him.
Good.
Bar staff said he works there part-time.
It's in the file.
Stephen Forrester.
Mm-hm.
Do we have an address? Not yet.
They pay him cash-in-hand, so no National Insurance number, but I do have a phone number.
I'll dig out an address.
Can I help you? Er I'm looking for DI Woods.
You've found her.
Howard Weston, legal counsel for the Met.
I wondered if we might talk.
You've been summoned to appear as a witness in the case of Mike Holland versus the Crown.
He's suing for damages.
Yes.
So why have I been called as a witness? His counsel, Helen Clarke, wants you as the arresting officer on the stand.
She's completely within her rights to do so.
Is there anything I don't know? Erm no.
No, I think you're up to speed with everything.
Excuse me.
Mum, this really isn't a good time.
Nan's on the floor, she just fell down! What? OK, OK, hold on, darling, hold on.
Mum? Hold on, I'm coming.
I need an ambulance.
No signal.
Shh.
How is she? She's had a stroke.
But they don't know anything yet.
What are they doing? What's happening? They didn't say.
Well, I'll go ask.
Ray, I've already done that.
There's nothing we can do but sit and wait.
OK.
You should get this one home to bed.
Yeah, well, I can't leave until - No, of course not.
It's OK.
You stay, I'll take her.
Hey? Come on, you.
That's it.
Ray, about before, I'm really - Not now.
Eh? I'll call you later.
OK.
I promise before almighty God that the evidence which I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Detective Inspector, may I ask how long you've occupied that rank? Two years.
Which means you made Inspector at what? 31.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
And would it be fair to say that your career's been fast-tracked - unofficially - by being my client's original arresting officer? Unofficially, I suppose so, yes.
Mm.
Important case for you, then.
I have here before me a sworn statement from Superintendent Ferguson.
In it, he states that on 28th September, 1985, WPC Denise Woods was in fact sent home.
For - and I quote - being over-tired, overly emotional about the case, argumentative and insubordinate.
Would you say that this is accurate, Detective Inspector? I suppose so.
Good.
So, you can confirm that you were under this suspension of duty when my client's vehicle was subsequently impounded for forensic examination at Brixton police station.
That is correct.
Now, on that same date, Detective Inspector Gainham was also on duty at Brixton police station as a PC.
In his statement, DI Gainham clearly recalls seeing Miss Woods in the police station on that date, subsequent to her being suspended from duties.
Detective Inspector Woods, it strikes me that were you to have the motive, you had the means.
And the opportunity, in the form of the distraction of the riots, to actively affect the investigation.
Detective Inspector Woods .
.
I want you to cast your mind back to when you were 17 years of age.
Is it true that on the day you buried your father, you yourself claimed to be a victim of rape? Objection.
Detective Inspector? Miss Woods? Yes.
That's correct.
It's true.
And no action was taken by the police? No.
You'd been drinking heavily at your father's wake.
You were personally acquainted with the alleged.
You accepted a lift in his car, so, despite your claims, you were advised by the police that there would be issues over consent, so not to pursue the case.
Correct? Yes.
Yes.
You were a victim.
You didn't get the help you needed.
Your Honour - And the first police investigation you were actively tasked with was a rape.
And murder.
Of a young woman of around the age you were when you claim you were raped.
A woman in need.
A woman who you met, prior to her death.
Your Honour, I'd like to call for a recess.
My client was not made aware this subject would be touched upon.
The court will take a recess of one hour.
All rise.
How's it going? You all right? It's OK.
You don't sound it.
They're tearing me apart, Ray.
You're tougher than this.
Yeah.
I know that.
Keeps coming like this It won't.
We both know this is all about money.
And they'll come up with an offer and you have to just suck it up and agree to their terms.
You hear me? Denise .
.
put it behind you.
Thanks.
You know, if I could go back and change things, I would.
I can't change it.
But, erm .
.
I can change .
.
er how we are.
I've gotta go.
I love you.
Bye.
Right The offer I'm about to give you is at the request of my client.
He doesn't want you to lose your job.
It's not coming from me.
So, not gonna beat around the bush.
I may not be able to prove that you framed my client.
But I can bring this judge and jury to the point where they will believe that you did.
What is your offer, counsel? Your client apologises.
Publicly.
You say you were wrong and that the miscarriage of justice was due to your inexperience at the time.
But in return, we will sign a non-disclosure agreement, saving you any further embarrassment, providing we can reach an out-of-court settlement of the appropriate magnitude.
I'm sure you'll both agree this is the sensible option.
We'll take that.
I'll tell the judge we're in conference and request we reconvene after the Bank Holiday.
No.
No, I won't do it.
If I might explain - No, no, no.
I'm done here.
Put what you have in front of the jury.
You just need to rest, then we're gonna get you back on your feet, OK? Things are gonna change.
They're gonna be different.
I'm gonna, erm I'm gonna make more time for you.
And for Charlotte.
I know I've put a lot on you, what with the school runs and everything.
I'm really sorry, Mum.
I love you.
And we now join Martin Lewis in the news studio.
This is BBC Television from London.
Diana, Princess of Wales, has died after a car crash in Paris.
The French government announced her death just before 5:00 this morning.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the news shortly afterwards.
Normal programmes have been suspended while we bring you the latest developments throughout the morning.
Oh, my God.
How awful.
I think we need some time.
What? Time for us both to think.
OK I'm sorry.
Can it wait? For what? We don't have a relationship.
We have a child and an arrangement.
Ray You've never trusted me.
You should've told me.
Everything.
And you should've known that I would be there for you, no matter what.
You know everything now.
By default.
I told you to take the deal.
Why didn't you? I couldn't.
That's bullshit, Denise.
I knew I knew that Mike Holland had done - I don't care.
Really, I don't care.
Do you know what I do care about? The life of my daughter.
Our daughter.
I want her to stay.
You want me to go? Obviously, you can see her whenever.
Anytime.
But I'm the one who feeds her and puts her to bed.
Takes her to school.
And she's gonna need her routine.
Please don't do this.
You did this.
Morning.
Morning, guv.
It's just it's terrible, isn't it? Yeah.
What are you doing in? Oh, Uniform called me in about an hour ago.
Forrester? Mm-hm.
They picked him up at that 24-hour snooker hall over in Camberwell.
They're just booking him in.
What have we got? Come and have a look at this.
I just ran him through CRO.
Previous - two years ABH, burglary, suspected sexual assault on a female.
Mm-hm.
DI Woods here.
I need a full forensic examination on the suspect and his home address.
Open your mouth, please, Mr Forrester.
Take off your top, please.
Everything else, including your underpants, and put this on.
Not in front of her.
This way, then, sir.
Is this the last of the stuff from Forrester's flat? Yes, ma'am.
For the record, I'd like to remind you that you're still under caution.
Do you understand? Can you answer for the tape, please? Yes.
Mr Forrester, can you tell me why DNA of Lauren Hinds, including hair fibres, was found on your clothing? Must've come into contact with her in the club, during the course of my work there.
And in your flat.
Don't know about that.
Maybe it'd been on my clothes.
No, this is a large amount of DNA from skin cells found in your bed.
We can prove that she was in there, where you raped and murdered her.
We also went over your car and DNA was found in your boot.
A few hours from now, we'll know that that belonged to Lauren Hinds.
We also know that you spent time in prison with Mike Holland.
We've read the letters he sent you.
So? Are we done here? Yeah, we're done.
I'm gonna be recommending that you are formally charged with the rape and murder of Lauren Hinds.
He as good as confessed.
Guv, DNA from Lauren Hinds and Amy Reid - Yeah? Forrester's not a match.
Shit! But we've still got him on Lauren Hinds.
He murdered her, but it seems he couldn't have raped her.
What? Forrester's medical file from prison.
He was attacked? He's impotent? Yeah.
He's wearing that rape charge like a badge of honour.
Guv You didn't do it, did you? You killed her but you didn't rape her.
Guv! Those letters to Holland - someone else was involved.
You had an accomplice.
Who the fuck was it? Why did you admit it? Why the fuck did you admit it? Guv! - Stop, stop! - What is going on here? There's a reason why interview rooms have tape recorders.
You want something, Detective Inspector? Yes.
Ten o'clock tomorrow morning.
Your presence is required at our offices.
You are entitled to a Police Federation representative.
That won't be necessary.
Gone over the files in the Holland case.
And while we can't find anything directly incriminating, given the circumstances, it is the findings of this committee that you should be demoted to the rank of Sergeant.
You have the right to appeal, should you wish to.
Would you like to say anything? Only that I missed one of Amy Reid's killers.
It is my belief that Holland - This is not the time or the place.
We have missed him again and again.
The evidence clearly points - OK, enough.
You are in no position to tell us how to follow up this investigation.
You will have absolutely no contact whatsoever with Mike Holland.
If you do, I guarantee the penalty will be far more serious than demotion.
You would risk criminal charges of your own.
If you value your future in the Metropolitan Police Service, I strongly recommend that you accept the findings of this committee and stand down.
Now, is that all clear Detective Sergeant Woods? Yes, sir.
That will be all.
Dismissed.
You need to be more watchful, considering the types you represent.
You still in a job? Just about.
What I did in court, it wasn't personal.
It was absolutely personal.
What I meant was, it's what we do.
Holland is guilty of the murder of Amy Reid.
You've set free a killer.
I haven't set free anybody.
The courts have set him free.
Don't hide behind the system.
If you gave one thought to those poor girls - Denise.
As far as I'm concerned, the more we keep emotion out of the judicial system, and policing, for that matter, the better.
I guess that's where you and me differ.
Goodnight.
Look, I'm aware of the mistakes that I've made.
Without them, I don't think I'd be the woman that I am today.
Everything that you have in your home used to be mine.
I know.
And you didn't want it.
You walked.
Joanna Andrews was raped and murdered by the same man.
You're obsessed.
What have you got on him? And don't say 'who'.
He's already caused so much damage.
Make him pay.
