M.I.T.: Murder Investigation Team (2003) s02e02 Episode Script

Season 2, Episode 2

- Is that a double'? - Is it your birthday? It's Busy Becky.
And it's Becky's birthday today.
Can we have a big round of applause for the birthday girl now'? Becky! Becky! Becky! ♫ And another one's gone and another one's gone ♫ ♫ And another one bites the dust ♫ ♫ Hey ♫ ♫ Another one bites the dust ♫ Acorn Media I hate hospitals.
Says the man who makes a point of attending as many nurses' parties as he can.
Well, only to keep Simon company.
Could we at least give the impression of being professional, please? - Where's the victim? - 'Round to the right, gov.
Find Simon.
Sir.
The victim's name's Karl Anderson.
A 28-year-old registrar.
Came off the roof.
40 feet up.
That's What I call an entrance.
What was he doing up there? It's Where hospital staff go for a crafty fag, bit of peace and quiet, apparently.
Didn't jump, fall'? The balcony wouldn't allow you to fall.
Unless he was drunk.
Teetotal.
Bang goes that theory.
Let's take a look at the roof.
He was a popular guy? Yeah, everyone liked Karl.
Gareth.
I can't believe this has happened.
I'm the senior house officer, Helen Cousins.
This is Gareth Frears.
We're the junior doctors.
We were both on Karl's team.
If there's anything that we can do to help, anything at all.
- We'll be taking statements.
- Right.
- Jed? - You all right? Our first priority's to contact Karl's next of kin.
His father's a G.
P.
in London.
I don't think Karl had a lot of contact with him, but his address would be in the hospital records.
Well, thanks.
We'll follow that up.
Sorry.
Do you mind giving a statement to my colleague? - I'll be straight back, okay? - Thank you.
Just this Way.
Thanks.
So, What are you called? Helen Cousins.
Were you at the party, Helen'? No, I was doing the final ward rounds when I heard that there'd been an accident.
MacMANUS: Gov, he left a shoe up here before he fell.
Apparently it couldn't just have slipped off.
It's got scuff marks on the toe and corresponding ones on the ground, but nothing clear enough to get a print from.
Yeah? Found a mobile phone in Karl's pocket.
And it's still working after the fall'? - Yep.
- Amazing.
Last call was from someone called Isobel.
In fact the last five calls were from her.
All of them made this evening.
Simon, someone called Isobel phoned Dr.
Anderson five times tonight.
Let's find her.
Who's this, then? Uh, can you mind that please, sir? Can't come any further.
I'm Stewart Masters.
I'm a consultant here.
Dr.
Anderson was my registrar.
Is there anything I can do'? You can give my colleague a statement.
Just one more question.
Do you know someone called Isobel? She's Karl's girlfriend.
Do you know where we can find her'? No.
Karl pretty much kept her away from work.
Why? - She was a bit odd - In what way'? She wasn't odd.
She was just shy.
A bit Withdrawn.
- Okay.
- All right.
How much longer is this gonna take? It'll take as long as it's gonna take.
Was there anything else'? Thanks.
Karl said they'd argued this evening.
When'? I don't know exactly.
He said she'd gone into the hospital and he'd have to go home and sort it out after the party.
He doesn't have to worry about it now, does he'? MacMANUS: If Isobel was able to phone Karl, then we can phone Isobel.
Hello'? Isobel? This is Detective Sergeant Ros- She hung up.
I'll leave you to it, then.
Not exactly luxurious, is it'? No.
Just doctors' white coats in here.
No socks.
No underwear.
No radio, no clock, no books, no clothes.
Hello, gov.
Karl's next of kin is his father, Dr.
Gerrard Anderson.
- Can you deal? - I'll get right on it.
- Karl's dad'? - Yeah.
People always say that you remember the knock on the door late at night, delivering the bad news.
Do you think that applies to the messenger too'? MacMANUS: I hope not.
Sorry it's a bit of a mess in here.
The cleaner hasn't been here this week.
Please sit down.
Did you hear What I said about Karl? Was it suicide? Did he mention suicide to you'? We haven't talked much these last few years.
See, from what we understand from his work colleagues, Karl had everything to live for.
Yes, well, he was always adept at presenting the image he thought people wanted to see.
Family trait.
So have you checked how he was getting on at work'? Why do you ask that? Because he always put himself under pressure.
You don't get to be registrar without keeping on top of things.
Yes, well, he wasn't happy being a registrar, was he'? No, he wanted to be a surgeon, play the starring role.
You think he was overstretching himself? Karl pushed himself too hard.
You seem a little angry with him.
Well, if I'm angry, it's because He - He was never happy with his lot.
How are we looking? We're still chasing the billing address for Isabel's mobile-phone number.
There was nothing about her in Karl's room'? No.
Nothing, literally.
He must have lived out.
There were lots of parking stubs for Carlington Street in his car, though.
Get her name checked out by the BIU.
If she's had any post sent to her, they'll have a record of her name and address.
What do you think drove him so hard? Vanity.
Egotism.
- MacMANUS: Self-esteem? - What do you mean? Maybe he was looking for affirmation.
For people to love and respect him.
His mother died when he was 17.
I did What I could, but I was a busy G.
P when he went to medical school.
Don't know What happened.
We just drifted apart.
Did he kill himself? We don't think it was suicide.
I'm afraid we're looking to the possibility that he might have been pushed.
Do you know anyone that might have had a reason to harm your son'? Do you know someone called Isobel? - No.
- MacMANUS: Karl's girlfriend.
We're trying to locate her.
I can't help you.
I'm sorry.
I told myself that eventually he'd come back .
that we'd start talking again.
We had a smart guy, full of life.
Well-loved.
With a bright future.
And new we've got someone who's pushing themselves too hard with possible suicidal tendencies.
The real Karl's probably in there somewhere.
Doesn't that apply to all of us? Working late? If we hurry up now, might get a few hours' kip.
You're looking tired.
Yeah.
Name one person here who isn't.
So how are things at home'? Kids not driving you too hard, I hope.
Kids are kids.
It's when they're not playing up you have to worry.
Good night.
- Night.
- Night.
What was that? A pep talk'? Thought you'd be long gone.
No rest for the recently promoted.
- P.
M.
's tomorrow morning.
- Okay.
When someone hurtles facefirst through a plate-glass roof at over 40 miles an hour and then hits a floor, it does a fair bit of damage.
We did rather Well to pick most of the glass out.
Could it be anything other than that fall that killed him? There's no other sign of injury or interference, but two wounds do predate the incident.
An appendix scar and this.
It's about 7 to 10 months old.
Was it an operation? If that's the result of an operation, then the surgeon should be shot.
What caused the injury'? At a guess, a superficial knife wound.
- Stabbed? - No.
Slashed or cut.
It's a ragged wound, and the stitching's too widely spaced, which is Why it's left that scarring.
So you're saying it's a botched job'? I'm saying whoever stitched that wound should be making moccasins and not performing surgical procedures.
Unless Unless What? Unless it's a DIY job.
Why would anybody want to stitch themselves up'? You're the detectives.
We're still coming up short on a motive.
MacMANUS: Doesn't seem to be work related so far.
The only other route is a domestic involving the girlfriend.
Mobile phone company has come back with a billing address for Isabel's phone.
It's registered in Karl's name, and the address is his room at the halls of residence.
MacMANUS: She was using his phone? Or he was paying for a phone for her to use.
Buying someone a phone's the kind of thing you do for your kid, isn't it'? What, are we saying that he treated her like a kid'? Sounds like someone who's insecure to me.
Just wants his girlfriend on the end of the phone 24!'? Or maybe it was her being dependent on him.
Didn't Gareth say something about her being shy and Withdrawn? Soon find out.
BIU has come back with an Isobel Kael who lives on Carlington Street.
MacMANUS: Number 56 must be on this side.
What are uniform doing here'? - Go ahead.
- Sir.
What's happened here'? Karl paid all the bills.
Pethidine.
MacMANUS: It's a painkiller.
Maybe she's addicted.
Either that or she's got a lot of pain to kill.
There's bottles of the stuff.
MacMANUS: Maybe they're both on it.
We won't know till toxicology get back to us.
- Karl was teetotal, weren't he'? - Mm-hmm.
Just don't add up.
Have you seen this in the bathroom? Yeah, she must have set fire to this lot and then panicked, put them outwith the shower.
I guess this answers our question as to Whether or not she's volatile.
Unless someone else did it.
There's no sign of forced entry.
Plus these are the actions of a very distressed Woman.
And the focus of her anger is obviously Karl.
MacMANUS: Pethidine's a powerful painkiller.
It's also highly addictive.
There were no drug retail Web sites on her computer and no packaging in the flat to indicate they were posted to her.
Karl would have had access at the hospital.
Yeah, but aren't all the drugs highly regulated? There's always a loophole.
The upstairs tenant called the police when she heard a disturbance in Isabel's flat, but nobody saw her leave.
We've checked all the A&Es in the area, and no one fitting her description has been admitted in the last 12 hours.
Where the hell is she, then? Gov? I think we've got something.
This is on a camera in the hospital corridor just off Dr.
Anderson's ward at 7:15.
MacMANUS: There's Karl on the left.
Who's the big fella? You two check out when Karl took any time off work in the last 10 months.
Couldn't have worked through the knife wound.
Let's see if we can find out who this other guy is.
Dr.
Cousins? Hello.
Sorry, it's just that we're still trying to build a picture of Karl.
How well did you know him'? How well do we ever really know the people we work with'? True.
Do you recall Karl being ill or having taken any time off in the past 7 to 10 months? Why? He has What looks like an old knife wound on his upper left arm and shoulder.
- Any luck at admin? - Yeah.
Karl took a week off exactly 71.
It's just that the wound's been badly stitched up, which would indicate he either did it himself or got someone unqualified to do it.
Or he was trying to keep it quiet.
MacMANUS: What's the point of having a personnel officer who's only been working here three days and doesn't have a clue about any of the staff? Welcome to the modern, streamlined NHS.
Any idea who this is'? Uh, no.
Back again? Yeah.
We're like a nasty rash aren't we'? What have you got pictures of Vinnie for'? - You know him? - He's a porter.
Vinnie Maitland.
Do you want to check that out with Barry'? Okay.
Where do you think we might be able to find him'? If he's at work, he'll be on the rota.
Right.
Thanks.
Sorry Have we met before? You could say that, yeah.
What, in a club'? Well, it was in a bar, and then at a club, and then in my bed.
We slept together three months ago.
Thanks for remembering.
You said I looked like Kylie.
Look, if it's any consolation, it was pretty unmemorable for me too.
MacMANUS: Jed? No consolation at all, actually.
We've got a possible locale on Vinnie.
Vinnie Maitland was cautioned for petty handling four years ago and investigated for serious handling last year.
Thanks.
Vinnie? Vinnie Maitland? Vinnie? Sorry, pal.
Thought you'd heard us coming.
I'm Detective Constable Griffiths.
HE'S gone! Get the bag! Sorry.
Oh, God.
- You all right? - No, I feel like crap.
- You didn't help.
- Sorry.
- I'm knackered meself.
- Oh.
Listen, I'm chasing a very bad man.
You didn't see where he went, did you'? Worth a fag'? - I'll get you a fag.
- Yeah.
- Thank you very much.
- You're Welcome.
Hello, Vinnie.
This is all stuff from the sharps bin.
Sharps? What's that? It's Where the used needles are put before being taken to the incinerator.
Yeah, but it's not just needles in here.
Look.
No, quite often the half-used ampule will get thrown in there as well.
Right.
So anybody could get access to them.
I suppose.
If they were desperate enough, yeah.
All drugs have a street value, Dr.
Frears.
Relax, everybody.
This is just an informal visit.
Sir, I think you know Detective Inspector Trevor Hands.
Nice to see you again, sir.
And you, Detective Inspector.
Rosie, could you finish off the introductions and show the commander around a bit'? I need a quick word with Trevor.
Karl's consultant has lodged a complaint about the behavior of some of your officers.
Has he'? He felt that they were overly robust? Is that What brings the commander here'? Do he and Masters play golf together at the weekends? Oh, What a quaint, old-fashioned notion.
The director of medicine contacted him, actually.
Whether they play golf together, I've no idea.
The director's keen we appreciate we are running an investigation within a working hospital.
- My team are Well aware of that.
- Good.
And how are the team doing? - I've no complaints.
- Eva? Likewise.
Can't be easy for her at the moment.
She'll be fine once things settle.
Can I go and interview my suspect now'? Carry on.
The drugs weren't mine.
MacMANUS: Then why did you run? I found that stuff in my locker.
Then you turned up, and I panicked.
What you found was a loophole.
Collect enough half-empty ampules from the sharps bin, and you've got a good, steady supply of drugs to sell on.
You know, I never thought of that, but that's not a bad idea.
Did you know Dr.
Anderson? Mm.
Nice bloke.
You liked him'? He always treated me okay.
Then Why did you have a toe-to-toe with him last night? You arrested my client on suspicion of handling drugs.
What's this got to do with drugs'? MacMANUS: It's part of a line of questioning.
- What did you argue about? - You don't have to answer that.
I left a patient in a corridor for a couple of hours.
He wasn't very happy about it.
MacMANUS: A nice guy, you said.
Most of the time.
He must have been having an off day.
It certainly didn't get any better for him, did it'? Because he swallow-dived off a roof an hour later.
Do you know Isobel Kael? Nope.
May I remind you, you haven't arrested my client in connection with a murder.
Are you sure you don't know Isobel Kael? I think my client answered that question pretty emphatically, don't you'? We can either hold him and dig around some more, or let him go, see What happens.
Do you think he's as stupid as he pretends? I don't think he'd give Stephen Hawking any sleepless nights.
I also think he knows more than he's letting on.
MacMANUS: Let's bail him and see what he does.
Okay, mister.
Where are you off to? Simon, quick.
He's going in the station.
I'm on the platform with him.
We're gonna get on the train heading west.
Yeah? Okay.
Are you back with him'? - Yeah.
Okay.
Hang back.
So if he's heading west he's not going home, and he's not going to the hospital.
Well, he could just be visiting his Aunt Flo or something.
Hang on.
He's getting off at the next stop.
I think there's only one place he's going.
Are you sure he said Isabel's? You've heard it wrong, I'm telling you.
You weren't getting worried about me, were you'? Where have you been'? Wait, wait, wait.
Wait.
There he is.
Yes.
Criminal mastermind he's not.
Hey, hey.
Hang on a second.
Isobel! It's Vinnie! Got him.
When you said you didn't know Isobel Kael, What exactly did you mean? I knew her to deal to That's all.
How did you some to be dealing to her'? She came into A&E to be patched up for something or other.
We got talking and I realized that she might be a potential client.
ts that how you got at! your clients? Supermarkets could {earn a for from you, couldn't they, Vinnie? Was Isobel strung out? She was obviously on medication.
What for'? My guess would be depression.
She sounds like a mess.
Which would fit Jed's assessment of Karl's profile of wanting to be in a relationship Where he was needed.
Was Karl Anderson involved with you and the drugs? MacMANUS: Did I say something funny'? Dr.
Anderson was the straightest person I've ever known.
What about the argument with him last night? Was it really about a patient? No, um He'd found out I'd been supplying Isobel.
They'd had a row.
She blurted something out.
He got oh his moral' high horse and he threatened to shop me.
And you weren't happy about that.
MacMANUS: Where were you yesterday evening, Vinnie? I worked until 9:00 and then I Went home.
You left at 9:00, and you didn't see any commotion around the social club'? No police sirens, no lights, no nothing? I left by the rear exit.
It's right at the other end of the hospital.
And can anyone vouch for your movements up until 9:00'? I was working all evening, taking beds here, trolleys there.
Did you meet Karl on the roof'? I didn't kill him.
Honest.
Did Vinnie kill Karl because he threatened to shop him over the drugs'? All he had to do to shut Karl up was to remind him that, with Isobel, technically he was shagging a patient.
Maybe they just fought, and it was an accident.
That's a big maybe.
We really need Isobel.
We just need to try and gather as much information as possible, Mr.
Masters.
As you can see, we're extremely busy.
I suggest you try hospital admin.
Helen, I need to see Isobel Kael's medical record.
You need a patient's permission for that.
That is, unless a doctor were to show them to me.
Please.
It's just, from What I gather, Isabel's probably in a very vulnerable state right now.
Plus, she's the only person that can help us fill in all these blanks concerning Karl.
- You're asking a lot.
- I know.
I want you to find whoever killed him.
Then we both want the same thing, don't we'? I put it up on top.
Pick this up when I'm gone.
That Way I never handed it to you and I never had a conversation about it.
I'll be back in half an hour.
Thanks.
Gov, I'm at Isabel's.
I think we might finally have something.
It was hidden inside an old L.
P.
sleeve.
They're the medical notes for a 17-year-old female called Kerry Purser.
She was admitted to St.
Kilda's with suspected appendicitis.
She was operated on the following morning, and then five days later she died of a multiorgan failure, having been treated for acute peritonitis.
Does it have the surgeon's name? Yeah.
Stewart Masters.
What? Kerry Purser Went into hospital for a relatively routine operation six months ago.
Five days later, she was dead.
Who hid the file in Isabel's flat'? It's got to have been Karl, hasn't it'? Be top of my list.
Masters was in charge of the team.
Let's double-check his alibi.
Maybe we missed something.
Right.
I've got the notes on Isobel Kael's hospital file.
- How have you got that'? - Friends in high places.
She had a history of psychiatric problems, and she was under the care of a Dr.
MacGrath at the Greendale Clinic until she was 21 years old.
She was last admitted there 71.
Well, that's the same time that Karl took time off of work for his wound.
If she's had a relapse, which would explain the state of her flat, chances are she'd have gone back to Dr.
MacGrath.
- Got an address? - Yeah.
Portsmere Road.
Get down there.
How's it going with Eva'? Yeah, great.
Very thorough.
Very professional.
Thinks on her feet.
Organized.
- Still finding it tricky, eh'? - Yeah.
MacMANUS: This is a bit of a step up from St.
Kilda's.
This is Rosie and Eva.
Hello, Isobel.
This is a very nice place.
It comes courtesy of a guilty mother who'd rather not see me but is happy to pour money into a clinic.
It's important to have a nice environment for the nutters, keep them content.
When were you last in here, Isobel? I don't know.
About six months ago.
Yeah? Could it be more like 71.
12'? Is it important? Karl took a week off work around that time.
Is that because he had to let his wound heal? What wound? Karl had a scar on his upper left arm caused by a knife wound.
Do you know anything about it'? No.
You must have seen it.
You were living with him at the time.
You out him with the knife, didn't you'? Do you want to tell us about it'? We argued.
Was yours Was it a violent relationship? Oh, no.
No.
It wasn't.
The knife was a one-off.
Were you angry with him yesterday, Isobel? I needed him.
I need him now.
Where am I going to go when I get out this time? It would help us if you came down to the station and answered a few more questions.
We're not arresting you, and you'll be free to go whenever you want.
Okay? Will you come with me'? We've seen the photographs at your flat.
The scratched-out faces.
He was pulling away from me.
I wanted to show him how I was feeling.
You did that before you Went to see him at the hospital? Word must have got out that his mad-cow girlfriend was in the building.
'Cause he found me before I got to the ward.
Told me to go home.
And did you go home? I- I think so.
You don't know? I Went to the toilets on my Way out.
And did you take drugs there? For the tape, Miss Kael nodded.
I haven't always been like this, you know? Do you remember going home? I was in a car.
Do you remember someone phoning you'? - Was it a woman? - It was me.
I don't like talking to people I don't know.
So you got a taxi? I must have got home somehow because I woke up in my bed the next morning.
Karl wasn't there.
So I phoned the ward.
Some girl answered.
And when I asked after Karl she started to cry.
I knew something bad had happened.
Sounds like she was really hung up on the guy.
But was she hung up enough to kill him? Showing Miss Kael item R-3 a photograph of Kerry Purser's medical file.
Do you recognize this, Isobel? No.
It was found in your flat.
Any idea how it got there? None.
Do you know anybody else at the hospital? No.
How about Vincent Maitland? You know Vinnie, don't you'? - Did he supply you with drugs? - What's she doing'? Isobel, some and sit down.
Isobel Isobel, can you answer the question, please? Yes, he was.
There are people watching us, aren't there? This is gonna go off - Come and sit down.
Isobel Get away! Get away from me! - Get away from me! - Isobel.
Isobel.
Don't! Leave me alone! Back off.
Back off.
Back off.
Back off.
Back off.
Isobel.
- Karl.
- No one's going to hurt you.
- It's over.
- I want Karl! Can you call the clinic'? - Yeah.
Okay.
I want Karl.
If she didn't kill Karl, it's up to us to find her an alibi.
Contact all the cab firms that work out of the hospital.
What about Vinnie Maitland? Yeah, two porters and a nurse have come forward to say he was with them at 8:00.
He was taking a patient from A&E to x-ray.
That would have taken at least 10 minutes.
So if he'd gone to the roof to kill Karl, he'd have to have sprinted there.
So all we got is Kerry Purser.
In the words of Mr.
Masters, if you want to find out anything else, try hospital admin.
There are two odd things about the Kerry Purser case.
One is that the histology report is missing.
The removed appendix would have been sent to the lab for analysis, and when the findings came back, they would have been attached to the file.
In this case, they weren't.
Also no postmortem was done on Kerry's body.
Usually if a patient dies within a week of surgery P.
M.
's done automatically.
- Something must have gone wrong.
What do you mean? Something bad must have happened for Karl to risk his career by stealing the file.
And if Masters was in charge So you putting him forward as a suspect? He's got to be in the loop, hasn't he'? Especially now he's pulling down the shutters.
How are we gonna investigate this if the hospital's refusing to help? MacMANUS: We can go and talk to Kerry's parents, see what we turn up there.
I can go down the hospital, talk to people away from Masters.
MacMANUS: Thought you hated that place? Well, now, can't let that get in the Way of the investigation, can I, eh'? Karl was great to work with but I wouldn't call him a close friend.
What about his relationship with Mr.
Masters? Anyone who was mentored by Mr.
Masters was lucky.
He always pushed people, tested them.
Do you remember Kerry Purser'? Kerry Purser'? Yeah, she was a 17-year-old girl who died after an operation.
Why are you asking about her'? Oh, it's just another line of inquiry.
Odd.
You know, the odd thing was was that a PM.
wasn't carried out on her body.
I do remember that, yeah.
I remember querying Helen about it, but she said Masters didn't think it was necessary.
Some people don't survive operations.
It's not unusual.
Do you remember anything unusual happening at the time of the op'? The locum anesthetist was running late, and Masters had a go at him.
But that's par for the course with locums.
You know, you do have a touch of the Kylies about you.
Any more questions? Yeah, just one.
Any chance of a drink later? I don't get off till after 11:00.
You'll be tucked up in bed by then.
That's all right.
I can get a late pass.
- I'll think about it.
- You do that.
Oh, yes.
Was it ever explained to you What Went Wrong? Mr.
Masters said that complications had set in before the operation.
Blood poisoning.
But Kerry seemed fine before she Went under.
A bit nervous, but fine.
I'm so sorry.
When trouble comes, eh'? You met Dr.
Anderson before the operation? He admitted Kerry.
He was a lovely man.
I can't believe what's happened.
Everyone's shocked.
I only spoke to him three or four Weeks ago.
He said he wanted to come 'round and talk to me.
But he never did.
You said you wanted to talk to everyone about Dr.
Anderson, but you're being very specific about Kerry's case.
What's going on'? We, um don't know.
Well, you haven't come 'round here to just swap happy memories with me.
You'd have to have had a very good reason to rake all this up again for me, wouldn't you'? MacMANUS: I don't reckon that that was one of my better ideas.
She's not gonna let it lie, is she'? - Would you if it's your kid'? - No.
- Meant to ask - There's no need.
Look, you're not a robot, Eva.
You're in the middle of a custody battle, for God's sake.
Look, this is hardly "Kramer vs.
Kramer" here.
And either way, I still get to see my kids.
Unlike Val Purser.
D.
C.
I.
's not a happy bunny.
Can't work her out.
She's a clever Woman.
Political, but then you've got to be these days.
Even Trevor's caught the bug.
Sorry'? He, uh - He's been working overtime trying to pretend that he hasn't got a problem with me.
No, it's true, Rosie.
I know that man hasn't got full confidence in me.
I'm just gonna have to prove him wrong, ain't I'? We can't talk to Isobel to confirm details, but we do have a cabbie who remembers picking her up outside St.
Kilda's at 8:10 and dropping her back at Carlington Street.
He recalls helping her with her front door.
Masters is not conclusively alibied.
We know he was at a party at peds, but no one can say for sure that he was there all evening.
Also Barry's managed to chase down the histology report.
And it shows Kerry Purser was as well as could be expected prior to the operation.
But Masters told Mrs.
Purser that Kerry was already deteriorating.
Which proves that whatever Went Wrong with Kerry must have happened during the operation.
And if Karl found out, he'd have wanted to confront Masters.
Was he silenced first? Any luck at the hospital? Plenty.
He meant did you get any new information? Well, I got Becky Hamilton to open up a bit.
And she told me it was Mr.
Masters who decided not to do the PM.
on Kerry Purser.
He told the coroner it wasn't necessary.
All seems to be pointing in the one direction.
- You ready for this'? - As I'll ever be.
Mrs.
Masters? Yeah.
What can I do for you'? I'm Detective Inspector Trevor Hands.
I've got a warrant to search this property.
Detective Hands.
Good.
Save me the trouble of a phone call.
Perhaps if you tell me What you were looking for, we could avoid all this.
It's not how it works unfortunately.
You're biting off more than you can chew, Mr.
Hands.
If I have any trouble swallowing, I'll let you know.
And it's Detective Inspector Hands.
Sorry.
You know, if we drop a paperweight, we'll tell you.
How long is this gonna take'? MacMANUS: Be out of here soon.
I've got appointments later on.
I need to know Whether you're intending to arrest me.
Not at the moment, no.
I don't have time for games, Detective Inspector.
If you want to talk to me let's do it properly.
We're not ready to question you yet.
I don't care.
I want to help you with your inquiries.
Isn't that What people do'? Let's get this farce over with.
You say you were at a party in pediatrics from 7:30.
We were opening a new ward.
I gave a speech.
And then you stayed at the party.
One of the drawbacks of being a senior consultant.
Much flesh-pressing required.
You left the party when you heard news of the incident? Correct.
But we've gaps in your time line, don't we Where no one can say for certain that you were in the room for the whole time.
Lot of people.
Lot of mingling.
You could have left the room.
- But I didn't.
- Can you prove you didn't'? Can you prove I did'? Shall we just let him go'? NO.
MacMANUS: We're eating up valuable time, and he knows he's got us on the run.
I've found something in Masters' papers.
It's a draft assessment Written by Mr.
Masters about Karl Anderson.
"Karl Anderson is very competent, skilled, and highly personable but can at times take things too personally.
" He builds Karl up, and then he does his legs.
The more you scratch the surface, the murkier it gets.
How would you describe your relationship with Dr.
Anderson? Very good.
You wouldn't care to elaborate? I'd like to think of it as one of mutual respect and admiration.
There.
Is that better for you'? You admired him as a doctor? He showed immense promise.
Look, can I get a cup of tea'? Yeah, yeah.
We'll get you one in a minute.
Showing Mr.
Masters item R-5, a draft assessment found at his house.
Why, then, did you write this assessment? I compliment him.
Then you undercut it.
Karl was supremely talented in lots of areas, but I believed he would have lacked the necessary steel to be atop surgeon.
And as that was his career choice, I felt duty bound to point it up.
And how did this "lack of steel" manifest itself? He tended to become too personally involved with patients.
Better to treat people as pieces of meat, is it'? When you're on the trail of a murder suspect, you follow strict procedures, yeah? Yeah.
You gather your facts.
You analyze how best to proceed.
You prioritize your suspects.
You execute your modus operandi.
Or I'd like to assume that's the Way you normally proceed.
MacMANUS: What's your point? My point is that if you stopped to grieve for your victims or their families, you'd get nowhere.
It's the same for a surgeon.
You focus on the job at hand.
You erase all other thoughts.
And Karl couldn't do that? I believe he found it difficult.
Can you sit down? No lack of confidence, is there? Yeah, he's good.
Very good.
Mr.
Masters, how far would you go to protect your career? I beg your pardon? If you're accusing me of something, come out and say it Did you ever show Karl this assessment? No.
Did Karl have any other reasons to be unhappy with you'? Not that I'm aware of.
Showing Mr.
Masters item R-6- the file on the operation of Kerry Purser.
You recognize this'? Should I'? You performed the operation six months ago.
Have you any idea how many operations I perform? Should remember this one.
She died.
Routine appendectomy.
Unhappily led to heart failure five days later due to acute peritonitis.
MacMANUS: Remember now? How is this relevant to your investigation'? Karl had taken this file and hidden it in his girlfriend's house.
Any idea Why he might do this'? It's a perfect example of What I am talking about - that Karl got far too involved with his patients.
And I can only surmise that he got attached to this girl, felt for the family, and thought that maybe he could ease their distress by finding out exactly What happened.
You seem remarkably detached.
Would it help if I broke down and subbed'? It's an unusual case, but it's not uncommon.
We do lose people from time to time.
It's part and parcel of being a doctor.
So he wasn't using this file to blackmail you'? Where is this questioning leading? Why did you advise the coroner not to do a postmortem on Kerry Purser'? Because it was perfectly clear What she died from.
There was no point.
She was deteriorating before the operation, significantly lowering her chances of surviving.
We took a gamble that might save her life.
It didn't pay off.
The histology report missing from the original file states quite clearly there was nothing Wrong with Kerry before the operation.
Are you seriously going to sit here and argue medical points with me, Detective'? If I have to.
You still haven't got a thing on me, have you'? You're just riding one hunch after another in the feeble hope something might turn up.
Were you at the function all evening the night Karl died? I'm leaving.
You were keen enough to help us earlier on.
So, what's changed? You've just made the biggest mistake of your career, Detective Inspector.
Did you arrange to meet Karl Anderson? You can expect a letter from my solicitor.
Did you meet him on the roof'?! I'm gonna sue you for slander, defamation of character, harassment - Stewart Masters, I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Karl Anderson.
You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention when questioned something you later rely on in court.
Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
Now, sit down! What the hell was all that about? He's an arrogant pain in the neck.
Unfortunately we can't send him down for that.
He's involved in this.
I know he is.
But we've get no concrete evidence against him.
All we really have is the fact that he was Karl's mentor and that he had a cooling relationship with him and that he may or may not have been involved in an operation that may or may not have gone Wrong.
He's hiding something.
Yeah, if it's not the murder of Karl Anderson, it's irrelevant.
Look, we've got Masters for 24 hours, okay? So let's find out exactly who was in the operation.
Now, we know Karl was away but who else from the team was in there? What? You've got a visitor.
Why did you arrest Stewart Masters? I brought him in to help us with our inquiries.
He decided not to cooperate.
Had no choice.
You accused him of killing Karl Anderson.
He was pushing me.
So, What evidence do you have against him'? We're building a case.
That's not What I asked.
I've got 24 hours to pull it all together.
Well, you really stuck your neck out on this one.
Just hope you don't get it chopped off.
Kylie! This is a surprise.
Yeah, well, thought I'd push the boat out and stay up till about half 11:00.
Anyway, I've got a few more questions for you.
You've only got 20 minutes.
Do a lot in 20 minutes.
- Yeah? - Oh, yeah.
Not if last time's anything to go by.
Well, first question is, where can we get a decent late-night drink around here'? Anything on the Masters diaries yet'? No, just a lot of dinner dates.
Another coffee? Oh, no.
I'm swimming in the stuff, thanks.
Everything all right with her'? As far as I know.
Just got the impression that she might be finding things tough.
- Well, Why don't you ask her'? - Because I'm asking you.
You're supposed to be keeping an eye on her.
If someone on my team's having a problem, I should know about it.
Why? Why? 'Cause then I can be aware of their needs and not come across like a prat.
It's called man management.
I can't do it effectively unless I know what's going on.
She's having some problems with her kids.
Her partner's gone, and things aren't easy for her at the moment.
She told you that, and you didn't tell me'? Wasn't your business.
Whatever goes on in this team is everyone's business.
Good team's built on trust.
You know that.
I can't believe you didn't tell me.
Especially as the all-seeing, all-knowing Wishart seems to have her finger on the pulse.
Why? What did she say'? Nothing, just that when things have settled down for Eva, she'd be more on top of things.
She's just being sensitive to What Eva's going through at home, isn't she'? Oh, right.
It's the insensitive plank of a bloke against the sisterhood.
I get it.
It's got nothing to do with the sisterhood.
It's about appreciating how people feel.
You know, you're separated.
You should know how it feels.
- Here you go.
- Cheers.
You can get off if you want.
What, are we finished? No, I just thought you might want to get off home.
I'll go when we're finished.
Fine.
Well, I hope I made up for last time.
I'll let you know when we've finished.
Why did you rush us out of that second bar'? There was someone there from the hospital, and I didn't want to be seen fraternizing with the enemy.
You think I wanted to be seen fraternizing with a Witness? That's what we both thrive on The danger.
And I've always been a sucker for a bloke in uniform.
Ah.
I don't wear a uniform.
You know What I mean.
So Why did you fancy this Dr.
Anderson, then? Everyone fancied Karl.
Half the hospital would have bedded him in a shot.
And Helen was in love with him.
Helen the S.
H.
O.
? Hang on a minute.
Is this some new police technique? Get your Witnesses into bed and then grill them'? If it was, we'd have a lot more recruits.
How do you know she loved him, anyway'? It was obvious.
She was always the first person he'd go to if he was in trouble.
Once he out his shoulder badly, and she stitched it up.
Really? Whoa.
It's time to stop talking.
Morning.
You look like I feel.
I had a very long night.
Took that Becky Hamilton out.
I hope it was considerably better than your last effort.
Who knows about that? Not many people.
Most of her friends on the ward.
Barry, Simon, me.
Jim, both Toms, Chris, Ken.
Is nothing sacred or What? In this place? You're joking.
Anyway - Good morning.
Anyway, she told me that Helen had this thing for Karl.
It was Helen sewed up Karl's knife wound, right? Becky reckons she was in love with the guy.
And you got this from Becky voluntarily? I didn't have to beat it out of her, if that's What you mean.
You slept with her'? Well, you know.
I wish I could say slept No, I mean, it could be crucial stuff, though.
I mean, What if Helen wanted more from Karl, and he was unwilling to give it, you know? Yeah, how do you think your method's gonna go down with certain members of our team? It's just - Ah.
I gather you haven't seen this yet, then? You were asked to handle this investigation with discretion, so you send 'round two officers to have a cup of tea with a fragile bereaved parent who's now threatening to sue the hospital.
Have you got anything concrete against Masters? I've got another 12 hours.
No, you haven't.
Let him go.
Oh, What? Bail him.
The sooner the better, Detective Inspector.
How does it taste'? - What? - Humble pie.
I hope the federation will get you a good lawyer if he sues.
Because you can bet his will be like a Rottweiler.
I'm not in the federation any more.
Divorce is killing me.
Money's tight.
He'll sue you for every penny that you've got.
It won't take very long, then will it'? We need to get down to the hospital, talk to Helen Cousins.
She had a pretty intense relationship with Karl Anderson.
I want to know what was going on.
Where did this information come from'? Jed got it from Becky.
Let's chase it.
I reckon Jed and Trevor are up to something.
MacMANUS: What makes you think anything's up? Oh, he keeps, um, smiling at me.
He's just trying to make an effort.
Humor him.
An effort? About What? The D.
C.
I.
pointed out that things weren't easy for you at home at the moment and that he should show a bit of sensitivity.
Can't believe it.
Why is she talking about my private life to him'? This job is hard enough at the best of times.
If him knowing means you can get home a bit earlier now and then, don't knock it.
I've been digging around, comparing files from Masters' laptop.
Kerry Purser case and chasing a private hospital.
And there's a major discrepancy in the timings.
Cut to the chase.
Masters is noted as finishing the operation on Kerry Purser at 11:45.
But according to the files on his computer, he vi/as at private clinic performing an operation at 12:05.
So'? The private clinic's a good half-hour drive away.
It can't be done.
There's no Way he could have finished with Kerry, changed, driven to the private hospital, changed again, scrubbed up and be ready to start the private operation at 12:05.
- Could be just a typo.
- But What if it wasn't? I also Went over the witness statements from Val Purser, and she remembers an argument between Dr.
Masters and a locum anesthetist who was running late who held up the start of Kerry's operation.
Becky Hamilton remembered that as well.
Masters was up against it because he had a private operation to get to, so he rushed the operation on Kerry and messed up.
Yeah, he wanted our investigation to be as low-key as possible.
And he was quick to go over our heads.
Karl Anderson found out What happened and confronted Masters.
Either he was intending to blackmail him or report him.
Whatever it was, it was enough to make Masters feel threatened.
We need to go another round with everyone involved in the Kerry Purser operation.
Let's go pick up Masters.
Next time I've got him here I want him to be staying.
You said that Jed got this information about Helen from Becky Hamilton.
Right.
He Went outwith her last night, didn't he? Did she have her legs in the air thinking of England when he's questioned her'? I don't know that they happened concurrently.
What was it you said'? Whatever goes on this team is everyone's business? A good team is built on trust? When were you gonna trust the rest of us? Before or after we appeared in court using this information? It's just another lead.
It could compromise the integrity of the entire team.
You know that.
You chewed my head off last night about trust, Trevor.
Goes both ways.
He's not here.
His wife thought he was still with us.
- Dr.
Frears.
- I can't talk to you.
You'll have to go through the management.
Oh, why'? Are you under instructions? Like you, I'm always under instructions.
Where can we find Helen? What, you think you'll have more luck with her'? Probably not, but like you, I can be stubborn.
Down the corridor.
Third door on the left.
- Thank you, Doctor.
- Go gentle on her.
No thumbscrews.
Been on your feet awhile? Just your average 12-hour shift.
I'm off now for eight and then back on again for another 12.
Oof.
Hope you've got comfy shoes.
What is it that you want'? Um Why didn't you tell us about your relationship with Karl? There was no relationship.
You loved him.
Nothing ever happened between us.
But you who helped when his girlfriend stabbed him.
You stitched up the wound.
I could barely see the needle.
I'd been out drinking that night.
He turned up at my room covered in blood.
Why didn't you tell me this when I asked you about it before? Karl came to me in confidence.
He asked me for help, and sol helped him.
Did he ever tell you about Kerry Purser's operation? He was very upset that she'd died.
But you were present at the operation.
Do you remember anything unusual before or after it'? Why are you asking about that? Because we're pretty sure there's a link between that operation and Karl's murder.
Did Masters make a mistake? No.
You hesitated.
There was no mistake.
Masters had another operation to go to.
Did he rush the operation on Kerry'? No.
Something happened in that theater.
Something.
Something that Karl knew about.
I'd help you if I could.
I'm dead on my feet.
Would it be possible to talk about this later? Sure.
Did you get anything? No.
Even Helen's clammed up.
Something must be going on.
It's time we put some real pressure on administration.
That's Masters' car, isn't it'? Eva, Jed, take the ward.
Simon, chase up admin.
We'll take Masters' office.
Is Mr.
Masters in'? He was in earlier for about five minutes.
Then he left.
- Where did he go'? - He said he was going home.
How did he seem'? He mumbled something about rank amateurs ruining his life.
- He's not here.
- He's not in his office either.
Must have had a good reason to come to the hospital.
It has to be something to do with that operation, surely.
Let's round up everyone who was involved.
That includes Becky and Helen.
I'm gonna call the D.
C.
I.
I think it's time we went over Masters' head.
I was arrested yesterday! I know.
- Do you'?! What are you gonna do'?! What are - I ask you, What are you going to do about it'?! I don't know.
I'm not gonna lose everything because of you, you stupid little girl! Mr.
Masters, move away from her! Move away from her, please! - Are you okay? - Yeah, she's okay? You're asking her if she's okay? Just sit down, Mr.
Masters We'll sort this out.
How do you propose to do that'? It's a mess! - You've ruined me! - Calm down! Oi! MacMANUS: Calm down, Mr.
Masters! Your choice.
Rosie.
- She's gone.
- Why? Not 'cause she's got a clear conscience.
Trevor? He's up here.
Helen's room.
Was it Helen who finished off the operation? Not the most judicious decision I've made in my career.
The appendix had already been removed.
All she had to do was clean out the wound and stitch up.
And was she qualified to do that? Give me 10 minutes with you, and you'd be qualified.
Not officially.
No.
- Yeah? - MacMANUS: Have you found her'? She could be anywhere up here.
It was Helen who was responsible for Kerry Purser's death.
I guessed that.
- Have you seen Helen'? - She's just finished a shift.
If I was her, I'd be looking for somewhere to get a bit of peace and quiet.
Excuse me.
Do you know how to get up on the roof'? Yes, if you just take the stairs there, you'll see a sign.
Cheers.
How come no one reported what happened? It's nothing to do with professional loyalty, believe me.
It's more about volume.
You only remember the really good ones or the really bad ones.
A young girl died.
How bad can it get'? She died five days later in another ward.
Most of the people in that operating theater wouldn't have a clue she didn't pulled through.
And that's how you get away with murdering a patient? I may have made a mess of this, but I didn't murder anyone.
Don't come near me.
It's okay.
- It's okay.
- Stay back! We know.
We know What happened during Kerry Purser's operation, Helen.
And I know it can't have been easy, you know, living with all that these past few months.
I was scared I'd be struck off.
Masters told me not to worry about it.
I'd give anything to going back to just worrying about being struck off.
Yes, it must have been hard.
With your colleagues as Well.
Especially Karl.
He asked lots of questions at the time.
I thought he'd given it up, but he - he got hold of her medical record.
He wanted my advice.
You did love him, didn't you'? He told me that Isobel needed him much more than I did.
He was Wrong.
Tell me What happened'? He was standing here.
And I Watched him.
I could see that this was his moment of glory, his chance to take a crack at the establishment, at Masters.
And I grabbed him! I tried to tell him that he wasn't chasing Masters he was chasing me! But he wouldn't listen! He pushed me off.
I screamed and ran at him, and then he went - he went down! Helen.
Helen, come inside.
I can't! Okay, look, look.
- I can't.
If you jump now - If you jump now, it's just the coward's way out.
That's my preferred route.
Helen.
All right, okay.
What is it Think she's gonna do it? Would you'? I might if I'd killed two people.
Come on.
Come inside.
I'm tired.
I'm tired of it all.
No.
Listen.
You told me You told me that you wanted me to find out who it was that killed him.
Come on.
You really meant that when you said that, didn't you'? I know you did.
You don't want to jump.
I know you don't.
You just - You just want all this to be over, don't you'? So Put a stop to it.
You can put a stop to this now, put an end to all this heartache, Helen.
I miss him.
So much.
Oh, yeah.
I know.
I know you do.
Please.
Come on.
That's it.
Come here.
Come here.
That's it.
Great.
It's all over.
Come inside.
It's over now.
It's over.
Well done.
Good girl.
Well done.
You think so'? Yeah.
You did a good job.
I did, didn't I'? Yeah, good job.
Yeah.
Take the rest of the afternoon off.
No, I don't want any preferential treatment, Trevor.
You're not getting any.
I'd do the same for anyone.
What's up with her? I'd be bouncing off the Walls if I just talked someone down off a roof.
I'll remind you of that when you do it.
No Way.
That's all I need.
MacMANUS: You know him? No, but I've seen him play.
He's a footballer.
I'm truly sorry.
Sean's dead.
Oh! You're not burglary.
Who are you'? Murder squad.
Jason Phelps.
GBH, burglary, and a season ticket holder.
The club is gonna fire my ass.
For being a gambler? Ora murder'? Acorn Media
