M.I.T.: Murder Investigation Team (2003) s02e04 Episode Script

Season 2, Episode 4

Acorn Media He was wearing gloves, apparently.
What have you got'? Unless she were size tens these must be his.
The boys are in Cumbria.
Stuart's taken them camping.
He never struck me as a lover of the great outdoors.
More the armchair, good-book, feet-up type.
You'd be surprised What he's into.
I wasn't having a go.
MacMANUS: You never are, are you? She was strangled, gov.
The boyfriend, he broke down this door.
He found her, and he reported it.
- Who does the flat belong to? Both of them.
So, Why didn't he use his key'? He says he left it behind last night.
No other sign of forced entry but we do have a footprint.
Where is he now'? Outside in the van.
How's it going with the D.
C.
I.
? Did you know that the minimum required clean-up rate for murder is now 83%? Yeah'? How are we doing? Our rate currently stands at 77%.
It don't take a genius to work out that the purpose of the meeting was to place a bloody great rocket firmly up our backsides.
So let's hope we can bosh this one out ASAP.
Gov.
What? No one has told you, have they? Diane Cain's a crime scene examiner.
She was one of us.
After she was beaten and strangled, she was sexually assaulted with What looks like a pestle.
A What? If you ate something other than ready-meals and sandwiches now and then Well, we don't all have someone running around after us at home, do we'? in her mouth, and the last phone call she made on her mobile was to someone called Paul.
MacMANUS: Boyfriend? No, his name's Andy.
Andy Nash.
A probation officer.
And)' I'm Detective Inspector Trevor Hands.
I'm the senior investigating officer.
This is D.
S.
MacManus.
Do you mind if we ask you a few questions? They took my clothes.
That's just routine.
It's nothing to worry about.
The flat belongs to both of you, is that right? Yeah.
We were going to move in when we finished.
We planned to get married next year.
You've known her a long time? Just six months.
Look, I know this isn't easy, but can you take us through how you found her'? I got back at 1:30.
The door's locked.
And I knew she was in The radio was on.
I looked through the letter box.
I could see her the corridor, and I broke the door down! And I told her to keep the door locked.
I told her.
No! No, no.
Let's find out Where Diane Cain's been staying.
Not Worth talking to Andy again until he's in a better state.
Let's find out who Paul is.
No farting about on this This is one of our own.
Don't you just love it when he's decisive? Is everything okay with you two'? Ecstatic.
A neighbor last saw Diane alive at 12:30.
That would put the murder sometime between 12:30 and 1:30 when Andy got there.
That's our hole in the air.
This is Sally Markham, Diane Cain's flat mate and best friend at work.
Hi.
I'd like to help in any Way I can.
MacMANUS: Shall we get a coffee? Yes, thanks.
Paul was the boyfriend before Andy'? Yeah, for about five years.
Five years too long if you ask me.
You didn't like him'? No.
He's a user.
Is that Why they broke up'? If you ever want to see Paul running, just ask for commitment.
She rang him this afternoon.
Yeah.
Couldn't live with each other, couldn't live without, you know.
Did Andy know? Well, Diane told me she'd finished with Paul, and the next thing I knew Andy was on the scene and they were getting engaged and buying a flat together.
But Paul was always there, hanging around on the fringes.
MacMANUS: The Paul that Diane called on her phone is a Paul Harris, a 38-year-old youth Worker and, more importantly, her boyfriend of five years.
They broke up six months ago.
The same time that Andy came on the scene.
Sally referred to Paul as a "waste of space" and "dangerous.
" Diane couldn't shake him off and kept going back to him.
In the three Weeks that Diane had been staying at Sally's, Paul had been around as much as Andy.
When we asked her if Andy knew about Paul she said she didn't know.
If he did know, he'd be pretty angry, wouldn't he'? We've got the boyfriend and the ex-boyfriend as our main suspects then, but let's keep our options open.
Diane Cain was C.
S.
E.
Let's look at any court appearances she may have made through work or if her evidence has convicted anyone recently.
Check on CRIMINT.
See if there's anybody locally that might be capable of this kind of vicious assault.
Sorry we're late.
Traffic was murder.
So to speak.
An upstairs neighbor heard a heated argument in Diane Cain's flat sometime around 12:15.
Then she saw a man slamming out of the building, and the description she gave sounds like a dead ringer for Andy Nash.
He said he'd got to the flat at 1:30.
Let's bring him in and get a free account of his movements.
We were giving him sometime, remember'? He blew that privilege when he lied to us.
Let's also pick up this Paul Harris and get down to the mortuary and see what they're turning up.
Come on, then, greens.
Back behind the line.
Right.
Reds, now you've got to wait for my whistle this time.
And Wonder what Diane saw in him.
Why did she swap him for Andy Nash, you mean? MacMANUS: According to Sally, Andy was the safer option, more reliable.
You mean he was the boring option.
Reliable doesn't have to mean boring.
It hardly means a thrill a minute, though, does it'? We met at Black's café.
Time? At about 9:00 and we talked.
Diane was worried that things with Andy were moving too fast.
And you last saw her when'? I drove her back to her flat just before 12:00, and I left at about five past.
She phoned you on your mobile at 12:20.
Why? To thank me.
For a nice morning.
That doesn't sound like people who've known each other for a long time.
What are you suggesting? I'm suggesting that you didn't sit in a cafe for three hours.
There's only so much cappuccino the average body will take.
We Went back to my flat.
To continue the conversation? No.
To have sex.
Did Andy know? Diane was terrified he'd find out.
She was moving away from him'? She was with Andy, but she was still really with me.
What do you reckon? I reckon Diane was playing a dangerous game.
Both Andy and Paul had good reason to be pretty hacked off with her.
But the crucial question is whether Andy knew Paul and Diane were playing hide the sausage behind his back.
If he did She was strangled first using curtain wire, and then she was sexually assaulted.
Full sex'? Unfortunately not, but we can confirm that it was a pestle that was used.
Pushed in pretty violently, too.
Not a cheap one.
She must have thrown a good dinner party.
The curtain wires from the flat? Not confirmed, but the chances are good.
How good'? About 70%, which, in my world, leaves it open to doubt, but in yours is tantamount to a conviction.
So it probably wasn't premeditated.
I love it when you bring the boy geniuses in.
Keeps us all on our toes.
I want you to think very carefully about this, Andy.
We need to establish exact times and places, okay? Were you at the flat any earlier than half past 1:00? I was there at about 12:15, yeah.
Why didn't you tell us that before? Because you asked me how I found Diane, and that's What I told you.
So, What happened at 12:15'? I went to help her decorate and we had a row.
MacMANUS: What did you row about? What does anyone row about? You tell me.
Pedal to the floor now, Trev.
Diane's last call was to someone called Paul.
Do you know who that might be'? Diane's ex.
But you know that already, don't you'? He's not stupid.
So, Andy, you don't like Paul Harris? He made Diane's life a misery.
She was glad to be rid of him.
MacMANUS: When did Diane last have any contact with him? Have you spoken to him'? Very slippery.
Just answer the question.
I saw him driving away from the flat this afternoon.
That's Why me and Diane rowed because she admitted she'd spent the morning with him.
Doing What? Talking.
He was upset about her plans.
He's hassling her for Weeks.
You're satisfied that they just talked? She just kept feeling the need to placate him and I don't know Why and I got angry.
We argued, and I left.
Where did you go'? I had a few drinks at a pub then I'd calmed down.
I Went back to the flat and the door was locked and I thought she was being arsey with me, so I yelled at her to open the door, and then I looked through the letter box.
MacMANUS: What was the name of the pub? The White something.
I didn't do anything to her.
I didn't do anything to her, I swear.
I loved her.
You want to question anyone question him! Andy Nash had the most to lose.
MacMANUS: How do you work that one out? He's hardly Tom Cruise, is he'? What are the chances of him hooking up with a Woman like Diane Cain again? You're thinking with your trousers again.
I'm with Trevor.
I'm halfway through checking the local offenders' list.
What's the delay? No delay.
I'm just halfway through, that's all.
The landlord of the White Horse remembers Andy Nash being there from 12:20 till after 1:00, because he was really putting it away.
Pints and chasers.
So, he sees his girlfriend's ex Walking out of their flat.
We already know he's jealous.
He tears her off a strip, storms down the pub gets hammered, goes back to the flat all pumped up, she slams the door in his face, he smashes the door down and in a fit of rage, kills her.
Okay, but Why then stuff her knickers in her mouth and sexually assault her'? He's a probation officer.
He knows the ropes.
Maybe he wanted it to look like something else.
We've already seen he's got a temper.
Let's see if he's got a history of failed relationships.
Find any ex-girlfriends, talk to them.
What about the ex-boyfriend? We know that Paul Harris was with Diane that morning and they were at her flat.
Andy Nash is edging it for me at the moment.
I'm just saying let's check Harris out, too, before we jump to any conclusions.
Anybody else here think I'm jumping to conclusions? MacMANUS: Hold on a second.
If you've got something to say to me, Why don't you have the balls to come out and say it rather than hiding behind snide remarks? When was I ever snide'? What happened last Week happened, and I thought, maybe wrongly that we'd both moved on.
I'm just trying to get on with the job, Rosie.
Don't you dare think that you can fob me off.
I know you too well, Trevor.
If you were any kind of man, you'd hold your hands up and apologize.
All right.
I'm sorry if I've appeared snide, but I'm trying to run a murder team and I haven't got time to check every little remark I make to see if it's been taken in the Wrong bloody Way.
If you feel you've being singled out for some especially bad treatment, I suggest you think about a move to somewhere Where you'll feel less victimized.
Am I interrupting anything? Is she'? No, I was just going to get myself a coffee.
Is she okay? Yeah, she's fine.
All right, all right, We'll do it this way, then.
You've got to be honest.
Who would you go for in terms of, like - I don't know - attraction or chemistry or whatever.
Andy Nash or Paul Harris? I don't know.
It depends on What I was looking for.
And What you're looking for now is different to What you were looking for, say, when you were 25'? Oh, absolutely.
Rubbish.
You can't tell her it's rubbish.
She's not being honest.
Oh.
18, 25, 35, 85, whatever.
What everyone's looking for ain't safety and security.
It's excitement.
Safe and cozy's What you settle for, not what you want.
If you were being honest, you'd admit that you'd take anything you could get at the moment, safe and cozy included.
Problem is you can't even get that.
It's past closing time, ladies, and the stripper's not coming back for an encore.
Come on, then, ladies.
Give us a shout if you need a stand-in.
I know Barry's up for it.
Wheel We get to see all sorts of crap in this job, but when it's someone close I mean he stuffed her own knickers in her mouth he strangled her, then he shoved that thing inside I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
- Sorry.
It's okay.
Who's going to stop Trevor making a fool of himself? Well, he'll chat up anything in a skirt, won't he'? Whereas for you, it's just got to have a pulse.
That's correct, yes.
Rosie.
What is going on between you and Trevor'? And do not tell me nothing, because you could out the atmosphere between you two with a knife.
Well, the other day, he made a play for me.
Well, more of a lunge, actually.
- What did you do'? - Nothing.
It came from nowhere, and then it was gone.
Stop smiling.
Marc, can I have some more Coke in that, please? Of course, with Trevor being Trevor, I'm having to deal with his bruised male ego.
What are you going to do, because Well, I'm not gonna hold my breath for an apology.
It was pretty out of order.
Listen, it was just a mad moment, and as far as I'm concerned, it's gone.
Forget it.
Speak to you later, then? Get blown out, Trev? MacMANUS: Thanks very much.
Bit young for you, isn't he'? MacMANUS: Get lost, Trevor.
Listen, are you going to come to this club or what? - It's good, innit? Tell her.
- It's crap.
What part of "no, thanks" do you not understand? Well, the "no" part.
Got the big gob on you, haven't you'? Laying on the charm for the ladies, but you're just a gutless wimp aren't you'? What's going on'? Nothing.
Nothing.
I'll see you tomorrow morning.
I'm sorry, Marc.
It's no excuse, but it's been along day for all of us.
Are you all right? I was only bloody talking to the boy.
I suppose it proves one thing.
Trevor must like you.
So, what's he going to do next, hit me over the head with a club and drag me by my hair? This has got to stop, and it's got to stop now.
I'm on swabbing duty this morning.
How about you'? Waiting for Andy Nash to come.
Is there anything you can tell me about Paul Harris? That he's like most men - arrogant, egotistical.
Oh, yeah, and don't bat your eyelids at him or he'll think you're in love.
Have you seen Trevor this morning'? Not yet.
How are you going to play it'? Like I always do - on my feet going with the flow.
Happy swabbing.
Gov.
Morning, boss.
Morning.
So, did you cop off last night, boss? Do I look like I copped off? Yeah.
Open.
Thank you.
I already told you I was with her.
And this will prove it.
Don't you people trust anyone? Open.
It is an interesting word for you to be using, Paul.
Trust.
I only trust What I feel and I loved Diane and she loved me.
She was always coming back to me.
Well, we'll never know now will we'? Any new developments? Yeah, Andy Nash.
He's gonna come in and go through the list of cases he was involved with recently.
We needed to swab Paul Harris to match any semen from Diane Cain.
Eva's dealing.
Good.
Forensics have matched a shoe print in the paint to a brand of training shoe.
And before you ask, Andy was wearing leather slip-ons.
Obviously, not a man of taste like your good self, eh, Barry'? Sling-backs more your style, Baz? MacMANUS: Hello, incident room.
I've also got five local sex offenders' names from CRIMINT, and one of them stands out 'cause he's also on Andy's case list.
Gary Shale.
On parole for attempted rape.
Andy Nash is here.
Get everything you can on Shale.
Andy, do you want to some through? I've got friends and relatives to contact today.
We won't keep you longer than we have to.
I've got her mum and dad are due tomorrow.
I understand that, Andy.
I thought we were supposed to be on the same side.
Do you want to keep coming up Andy? We're just going to look through these files and then we're gonna let you go.
You've got him here'? Stop it! Andy! Andy! I'll kill ya! I'll kill ya! I'm sorry.
It's okay.
I'm sorry.
You should have let me smash his face in! MacMANUS: That would have solved everything, wouldn't it? Yeah, well, maybe not but it made me feel a lot better.
MacMANUS: You knew that Diane and Paul were having a physical relationship? I'd have been pretty stupid not to have worked that out, wouldn't I'? You told us, quite emphatically, that Diane and Paul were "talking" that morning, but you knew it was more than talking they were doing, didn't you'? You knew that they'd had sex.
That must have made you furious.
Furious enough to slam out of the house for fear of What you might do to her, right? We've seen your temper, Andy.
You were angry enough to go and drink heavily in a pub for over an hour.
No, she lied to me! She said that she'd been to his flat and they talked.
But I knew she's lying! I knew that! Did you kill Diane, Andy'? No.
I Went for a drink, and then I Went back to have it outwith her.
She's dead! She's dead, and there's nothing I can do.
I think we can take the heat off Paul Harris.
If he did kill Diane Cain, he's doing a bloody good job of acting like he didn't.
We've seen that Andy can be violent, and he knew that Diane and Paul had had sex that morning.
You think he could have killed her'? MacMANUS: Possibility.
And as you said, after he'd done it, he might have tried to make it look like something else.
How are we doing with the stuff on Gary Shale? He's a convicted sex offender, a heavy drinker who's also violent when he's been drinking.
Acquitted of the rape of a 16-year-old girl seven years ago and now he's on parole for the attempted rape of a 30-year-old Woman.
Sounds like a real charmer.
Who wants the privilege'? Excuse me.
I'm looking for Gary Shale.
He's right there.
Gary Shale.
I'm Detective Inspector Trevor Hands.
This is Detective Constable Simon Tait.
What? Is this about the armed robbery or the hijack? Try murder.
No, thanks.
Not my style.
I take it you're familiar with Andy Nash.
Has somebody finally topped him'? Why do you say that? Because Nash is a 24-karat waste of space, and if someone's done him, he was at the head of a very long queue.
You don't like Andy, then? The only thing you want from your probation officer is that he looks after you.
Nash never does.
We understand you're on parole for the attempted rape of a 30-year-old Woman.
She's a lying bitch.
Next.
Where were you yesterday morning, Gary'? - Am I under arrest'? - No.
Then I don't have to answer your questions, then, do I'? We're just eliminating people from our inquiries.
If you don't want to be eliminated, fine.
See you again very soon.
I got up about 8:00, came here.
Then I met some reprobates at a pub to watch a Chelsea game, kickoff 2100.
They lost.
I wasn't happy.
After that, I Went for an Indian before going home, Watching telly, crashing out early.
A day in the life, eh'? My money's still on the parole officer.
What about you'? Ever decreasing blood sugar levels means I haven't got the energy to formulate an opinion.
Rosie.
We've got another one.
A young Woman killed in her flat last night.
Strangled with a cord, knickers in her mouth, same as Diane Cain.
We're on our Way there now.
We'll call you when we know more.
Hold that.
What is it? There's been another murder.
Let's see Where our friend Gary Shale was last night.
He shot off home as soon as we left.
Look that up.
Just through here, Sarge.
Her next-door neighbor found her.
There's no sign of forced entry into the flat and, look.
She must have known her killer.
I love kicking down doors as much as the next copper but don't you think we should get backup for this'? Why? Well, just something his record said about him being a heavy-drinking psycho with an unhealthy disregard for authority.
It's a great job sometimes, isn't it? Here we go.
Let's go, Robin.
What's this, Gary'? Sudden urge to leave the country? I'm just going to the launderette.
Yeah, right.
It was worth a try, weren't it'? Chasing Gary Shale, garages behind Treslove Avenue towards Canton Street.
Gov, I'm going back for the car! Aah! Jesus Christ! Stand back.
Police officer.
Stay in the car! Ambulance.
Gary Shale, I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Diane Cain.
MacMANUS: D.
S.
MacManus.
It's me.
Gary Shale's in hospital.
MacMANUS: What? He had a fight with a car, not me.
How did that happen? He left work, went home packed enough clothes for a week, then tried to do a runner.
Not the act of an entirely innocent man.
We're going to search his flat.
MacMANUS: Is he okay? He was groaning healthily when they took him into hospital.
I'll see you back at base.
Yeah, okay.
Bye.
How we going to get in'? He kindly donated his keys.
When'? She only used the flat during the week.
Weekends she spent at her parents' place in Kent with her kid.
Is that the girl in the photographs? Yeah.
Natasha.
Oh, they're going to be devastated.
She always said she had the best of both worlds.
Single during the week and a mum at weekends.
She knew how to enjoy herself.
Really? She was unhappily married for 15 years.
Said she was making up for lost time.
I've seen quite a few guys leaving her flat early in the morning.
I'm not saying she was a slapper, far from it.
She was just enjoying life, you know? Any idea Where Louise was last night? She'd organized a surprise party for one of the girls at work.
Do you know Where? It was a local pub.
The one in Artale Street, I think.
It wasn't - It wasn't a hen party by any chance, was it'? Sarge.
Louise Martin, she was in our pub last night - that hen party.
She'd organized it.
What? I knew I recognized her.
She was the Woman that Trevor chatted up.
Are you sure'? Is Trevor in'? He's on a search.
Gary Shale's flat.
I'll go to the pub and retrieve any CCTV and chase up statements.
Somebody might have seen someone hanging around Louise.
Other than Trevor, you mean? Anything, Simon? Just that he subscribed to some pretty deviant magazines and he seems to be sponsored by wet Wipes.
Nice.
I remember the hen party, but no one in particular.
I remember the stripper barely got outwith his life.
How would the party normally have been booked? Through the bar manager, usually.
Would there be any paperwork? Well, we're not known for it, but there's probably something.
It's probably in among that lot somewhere.
Great.
Cheers.
Oh, and I'm going to need to take any CCTV.
Forensics have come up with a set of prints at Louise Martin's flat they can't match.
They want to eliminate any of our officers who were at the scene.
Fine.
Ready? Okay.
Two very similar murders and yet totally different.
In what way'? Which do you want first, the ways in which they're similar or the ways in which they're different? Would you tell me how to do my job, Charles? Only if you asked me very, very nicely.
Both girls were strangled with a cord, both had underwear stuffed in their mouths, and both were sexually assaulted with a blunt instrument.
The differences are far more interesting.
In the first, the killer used curtain Wire.
This was more like electrical flex.
The first blunt instrument was a pestle, and this was a bottle.
- Is that it? - No.
The second victim was dead before she was strangled.
How did she die'? A blow to the head.
But the major difference is that the first was a frenzied attack.
This second one was far more calculated.
Almost staged.
Trevor.
You think he Went home with her'? They both get into his car.
MacMANUS: How bloody predictable is that? What are you going to do'? I'll be on my mobile if anybody wants me.
Where are you going'? Not often we see you over here at Scotland Yard, Rosie.
Why the panic? It's a confidential inquiry.
And there's no panic.
There's always a panic.
Everyone wants everything yesterday.
Ah, here we are.
Looks like one of your team's got their prints all over the crime scene.
Not very smart.
Do you have a name? Trevor Hands.
Detective Inspector.
Must have been particularly careless when your team Went in.
Look, as soon as you find anything, anything, I want to know about it.
We need some forward momentum on this one.
Look, I'll call you back.
Don't tell me.
I've upset you again.
Did you go home with the Woman you picked up in the pub last night? Is this a personal or professional inquiry'? Purely professional.
Did you'? Yeah, I did.
Want other sordid details? No, I can probably guess them.
I'm a single man.
I picked up a single Woman, Went home with her.
We had uncomplicated, unconditional sex.
What's the problem? The problem is is that the Woman you slept with is our second murder victim.
You were filmed on a CCTV camera getting into your car with her at the pub, and your prints are all over her flat.
And if you're interested, her name was Louise.
Louise Martin.
How long were you there for'? I don't know.
An hour and a half.
Oh, that good, eh'? Like I said, it was just sex We didn't exchange vows.
No.
Just bodily fluids.
When was she killed'? Estimated between 2:00 and 4:00.
Where did you go when you left? I drove home.
Right.
Did anyone see you'? Did you see anyone? Are you questioning me'? You were the last person to see her alive.
- Apart from the killer.
- Yeah, apart from the killer.
Look, do me a favor, just keep this to yourself until I sort it out, right? You Went over my head.
This way, there'll be an investigation and a chance to clear your name properly.
Detective Sergeant, can you leave the room, please? What's going on'? You'll all be officially informed.
Right.
Can I have your attention for a moment, please? Detective Inspector Trevor Hands is taking some well-earned annual leave, which means that D.
S.
MacManus Will now be heading up this inquiry.
I expect you to give her the same support and commitment as you gave to the D.
I.
That's it.
Thank you.
We've all but eliminated Andy Nash and Paul Harris and our main focus is now Gary Shale.
But because of some inconsistencies, there's a chance that somebody else is responsible for the second killing.
We didn't release to the press any details of the nature of Diane Cain's murder, which means that the second murderer, if he exists, must have had detailed knowledge of the first killing.
Are you saying this could be an inside job? Anybody who had insider knowledge of the first killing is now a suspect for the second, yeah.
Let's get going.
We've got a lot of ground to cover.
Thanks.
Tell me to get lost if you want.
I don't want Trevor's name up on the white board.
Fine.
And I want him eliminated as soon as possible, which means either placing him outside the hole in the air or nailing the real killer.
Either way, my priority is to get Trevor back behind his desk.
Good.
Any sign of Trevor's car'? Not so far.
- Keep trying.
- What else would I do'? Has anyone tracked down the files on Gary Shale's past cases'? They haven't come through yet.
Well, can you chase them up'? There must be video interviews with the victims.
We might learn something from them.
Anyone in particular you'd like to do that? Well, I'm talking to you, so how about you do it'? Whatever you say, boss.
Hello, it's Trevor.
I'm out.
Leave a message.
I know you think that I'm a right cow now, Trevor but my priority is to clear your name.
I may have to ask you some further questions at some point.
I'm sorry.
I had no choice.
Can I have everyone's attention, please? Quiet! Look, we're all here to do a job, and that job is to find the killer or killers of Diane Cain and Louise Martin.
Now, you can either help me or you can hinder me, but I need to know right now which one it's going to be.
Does anyone have a problem? No one'? Good.
Who knows when we can interview Gary Shale? He'll be fitter tomorrow, apparently, but I'm not counting on it.
He knows we're waiting to talk to him, so he'll probably stay in hospital as long as he can.
What do you want us to do till then? Follow me.
We've got a warrant to search your house.
If I'd known you were coming, I'd have put the kettle on.
Have you seen these? I never had Trevor down as an anorak.
Is there something Wrong with being proud of your achievements? Got a job to do.
No blood-stained clothes or smoking guns'? When did you start again? I Went round the corner and bought a pack.
- What are you doing'? - Searching.
That's not searching.
That's re-arranging.
If you're going to do it, can you do it properly? You heard What the lady said.
Do it properly.
Been lovely seeing you all.
Do pop round again soon.
The reason I want this search done thoroughly is that when your name's cleared, there's no doubt in anyone's mind.
Didn't they tell you at police school? There's always doubt.
Listen Thanks.
- What? - He fancies you.
Oh, please.
Drink this slowly.
This is as far as the budget stretches.
What about the new girl on reception at the path lab.
Have you got a go for her'? Unless he doesn't go for girls.
Is that it, Baz? Do you bat left-handed'? Or are you ambidextrous? Here they all are, then.
The old team.
The whole bloody lot of them.
MacMANUS: Why don't you go home, Trevor? We'll be in touch when we get some news.
Don't even get a team drink'? Come on, man, let's go.
We can go somewhere else and have a drink.
Come on.
- No, I like it here.
- Come on, Trev.
The cheesy decor, dodgy clientele, even the pansy barman.
- Yo ho! Let's go.
Another pub, eh'? Only if you can answer one question for me.
Why are you such a prat'? I mean, I've worked with loads of middle-class, university-educated, grade-A tossers, but how do you manage to rise head and shoulders above all the rest'? Come on, Trevor.
And I know you, son.
I know you better than you know yourself.
On it 2417 a glory-grabbing, macho ass-licker.
You'd sell your own granny for promotion.
Actually, you'd give her away.
As for you, you like to give the impression you're working for the good of all, but you're only really in it for yourself, aren't you'? Whatever you say, Trevor.
Someone get him out of here.
Come on, Trevor.
Let's go.
And you.
You're the Worst of the lot.
If you wanted my job, sweetheart I don't want your job.
Yeah, what, just want me out is that it'? Come on, Trevor.
I wondered when you'd pipe up, Mr.
sit on the fence, don't rock the boat, do just enough.
Well, no bloody more, eh'? You're not doing yourself any favors.
Yeah.
I'm right out of favors, aren't I'? I should never have got on the Wrong side of her.
That was my big mistake.
No wonder Stuart spends so much time away from home.
Where is he now'? Camping- What person freezes their ass off under canvas rather than being in a nice, warm house with their wife'? A man who's sick of trying to live up to her exulted expectations, that's Who.
Rosie, hang on.
Was it something I said'? Waste not, want not.
Give my love to the D.
C.
I.
You really are an asshole.
So I'm told.
Male, early 40$, separated, drinker, problem with authority and relationships.
Tendency to be arrogant, stubborn, verbally abusive, belligerent.
You missed off surname Hands, Christian name Trevor.
If I was looking at him as part of a murder investigation, he'd be the top of my list of suspects.
I hate to point this out, Rosie, but you are looking at it as part of a murder investigation.
How are we doing on that Gary Shale rape-victim tape'? I'm only on the second interview.
The girl hasn't said much yet, just cried most of the time.
C.
S.
E.
's turned up a pair of training shoes from Gary Shale's flat that match the tread on the print from Diane Cain's.
They've also found traces of the right color paint on a pair of his trousers.
He was definitely in that flat.
Is he fit enough to be brought in'? The doctors gave him the all-clear this morning.
Gary Shale's been placed at the scene.
Eva's picking him up now.
I think we can eliminate Andy Nash and Paul Harris from our inquiries.
You do know the press have started sniffing around? MacMANUS: Didn't take long.
A double murder, an officer taken off the case - could be somebody's meal ticket to the Sunday's.
Let's hope we can tie it up as soon as possible.
Think you're up to it? I don't know.
Wrong answer.
Well, if you don't think so, then replace me.
Might not be a bad idea.
But nobody knows this case as Well as I do, and nobody else will work as hard to nail the person or persons responsible.
Carry on.
What about replacing me'? Carry on.
We're investigating the murder of Diane Cain.
Do you know her'? No.
Showing Mr.
Shale a photograph of Diane Cain.
Have you ever seen this Woman before? No.
Okay.
We now need to pinpoint your movements for Saturday morning.
Didn't I go through all this with the other fella? Go through it again.
For me.
Since you ask so nicely.
I got up late, Went to watch the Chelsea game at the pub with workmates, then I Went for an Indian before going home.
When did you get to the game'? It was just after kickoff.
That top really suits you, you know? Nice and tight round the titties.
Oi.
Stick to the questions.
Do I detect a little bit of jealousy? Shut your mouth.
You would, though, wouldn't you'? Oh, yeah, he would.
You stayed until after the game, then you Went and got an Indian, is that right? Yeah.
Got home about 5:00, Watched telly, crashed out about 9:00.
Not my idea of a great Saturday night.
Did you ever go to Andy and Diane's flat with Andy'? Why would I want to do that'? You never socialized with Andy'? Showing Mr.
Shale a photo of a training shoe.
If you've never been to Diane Cain's flat, how do you explain the fact that your training shoe matches a print found there? Also, paint found on an item of your clothing matches the exact color used in the hallway.
Okay.
I did go round to her flat.
I was looking for Nash, Went round to the flat, He wasn't there.
Then I left.
Is that it'? Yeah, that's it.
If that's it, if that's all that happened, Why didn't you tell us before? Because with my record, you'd have jumped all over me.
I swear I was there for two minutes, then I left.
Why did you want to see Andy'? He had this idea that I was drinking again and was trying to get my parole canceled.
But you were drinking again, weren't you? You were at the pub with your mates.
The odd half of Shandy, yeah, but he was making out like I was back on it proper, which I wasn't.
How did you know where the flat was'? I was down there on a job one day, and I saw them going in together.
What time did you get to the flat? It was earlier, before I Went to the pub.
She told me he wasn't there, and then I Went to meet my mates.
I don't believe you.
Prove it otherwise.
Any chance of a break? I need to siphon the python.
You'd better see this.
I haven't seen anything of Trevor, but look who's out buying cigarettes two streets away from Louise Martin's flat at 1:00 in the morning.
MacMANUS: That's Gary Shale, isn't it? Exactly.
MacMANUS: Didn't he say that he'd crashed out at home? Either he's a sleep smoker or he's been lying.
Does this leering technique ever actually Work? You'd be surprised.
I said a 10-minute break, not half-hour! Can we get on with this, please? I'd like to get home before the bromide starts wearing off.
Interview re-started at 16:45.
Present are D.
C.
Eva Sharpe, D.
C.
Jed Griffiths, Gary Shale's solicitor Mr.
Palmer, and Gary Shale.
Where were you on Saturday night, Gary'? What's Saturday night got to do with anything? Do you know someone called Louise Martin? No.
Would it then surprise you to hear that we've got you on CCTV Walking around the Blackstone area at 1:00 a.
m.
'? No.
What were you doing there? Seeing someone.
- Who? No comment.
Who did you see, Gary'? No comment.
What is it you're scared of'? No comment.
Rosie, I think I've got something.
It's more of a hunch, really.
Did you want him to kiss you'? No.
What happened'? He put his hand up my skirt.
What did you do'? I tried to stop him, but he was too strong.
He stank of beer, and he kept licking me on my face like a dog, like a filthy dog.
Get on to the morgue.
Yeah, I already did.
They swabbed Diane Cain's cheek, and they're comparing Shale's DNA now.
I also asked them to check Louise Martin.
Chase up the results and make sure they keep Shale here until they get them.
Great work.
How long were you at Diane Cain's flat'? Good girl.
Two minutes, tops.
And you'd never met her before? No.
And when you said goodbye, did you hug or kiss her'? I just told you I didn't know the Woman.
So, you certainly didn't know her Well enough to lick her face? What? According to forensics, your DNA has turned up on Diane Cain's right cheek.
Any idea how it got there? You were also tanked up when you Went round there.
According to your mates, by the time you got to the pub, you were flying.
And you know What you get like when you're tanked up, don't you'? It's on your record.
You was hacked off at Andy because he'd let you down.
You found Diane Cain on her own and she wound you up even more.
And you killed her! She was a cocky bitch! Shoving me towards the door! Calling me all sorts of names, the foul-mouthed slag! New we're getting somewhere.
We've got him.
When will the DNA results for Louise Martin be back'? They're hurrying them through.
We need to know Where he was the early hours of Sunday morning, and then We'll nail him for both killings.
She deserved all she got.
Where's Jed and Simon? Gone on ahead to start the celebrations.
Be churlish not to join them wouldn't it'? Right.
Do you want to throw the spanner in or shall I'? Whilst we've got Gary Shale to admit to the murder of Diane Cain, he vehemently denies killing Louise Martin.
Well, he would, wouldn't he'? His alibi checks out for the night of Louise's murder.
He was at an illegal drinking club.
That's Why he was reluctant to tell us.
Witnesses say he was there from 12:00 till 4:00, popping out for about 10 minutes to get some cigarettes at around 1:00.
Forensics have found no sign of his DNA on Louise Martin.
So, While it is congratulations for solving the first murder, it does leave a lot of unanswered questions about the second.
I suggest you call it a day for today and make afresh start in the morning.
There is one other avenue left to pursue, and I do understand your reluctance.
Are you going to come for a drink'? Hardly think I've earned it, do you'? Stop being so hard on yourself.
We're going to have to bring Trevor in, aren't we'? The Weight of evidence is against him.
Yeah.
And we both know he's no saint.
Who is'? Do you think he could have done it'? Are you asking me if I think he could have done it Or if I think he did it'? Both.
As Rosie, no, I don't think he did it, but as D.
S.
MacManus, yeah, he could have.
Right.
So, if it's not Shale, then who is it'? Someone who knew all about Diane Cain's murder and made Louise Martin's look the same.
In order to do What? Divert attention.
Or to gain it.
Why do you say that? I have absolutely no idea.
My round.
No, no, it's all right.
We're going to go up the road for a couple, aren't we'? MacMANUS: Eva? No, I've got to get off.
Suit yourselves.
We could go for some food if you fancy it.
Oh, Simon's up for that, is he'? No.
No, I meant just you and me.
Maybe some other time, eh'? Spot the sad old bag on her own eh'? - I can stay if you want - No, you're all right.
I'm going to have this and then get off.
What, with Stuart and the boys away it's a chance to get a decent night.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, see you.
We're closing up soon You want another? No, no, you're all right.
Thanks.
Keeping you busy, yeah'? Yeah.
What are you doing back here'? Just needed some peace and quiet.
You know, thinking time.
You and me both.
Plus, something Jed said got me thinking.
Miracles will never cease.
What's this? It was up there already, wiped out.
Must have been Rosie.
Just filled it in again.
Jed said something about the second murder being made to look like the first, not to divert attention, which is What Trevor would have wanted if he'd done it, but to gain it.
But who'? Who'd want to gain attention? John, did Rosie leave? Yeah, yeah.
What can I do you for'? Listen, I wanted to check something with you.
When I spoke to Marc earlier, he said that the bar manager - you - normally books the parties here, is that right? Usually, yeah.
But you said in your statement that you didn't book Louise Martin's hen party.
No.
So, who did'? Well, I was away on holiday last month.
If she booked it then, it'd be done by the relief bar manager.
Who is'? Well, Marc.
Is Marc around'? And could the booking have been made over the phone? No.
All functions are booked face-to-face and with a deposit.
You'd be amazed how many times they try and find somewhere better and then blow you out.
Marc'? There's someone here to see you.
Marc'? Can you open it'? His car's gone.
Did he tell you he was going out'? No.
He said he was going to bed.
He must have gone out the back.
Did you know he was a copper? Had no idea.
Hello, Barry, it's Eva.
Listen, I need you to chase up a name for me.
Okay.
It's Marc Sharaff.
That's spelled S- h-a-r-a-double F.
Looks like he was top recruit at Hendon four years ago.
I'll see if I can track down a tutor.
It might be nothing, but I had a thought about Louise Martin.
She was at the pub on the night she died, yeah'? Yeah.
The other person who was there that night was Sally, Diane's friend.
It's a link of sorts.
Guess Where I am.
Surprise me.
At the pub.
Listen, can you do me a favor? Good job I haven't got a social life, isn't it'? Can you pull a copy of the booking form from the hen party'? Hang on a sec.
Okay.
Has it got Louise Martin's address on it'? Yeah.
Okay, great.
I'm going to need you to chase that stuff at Hendon for me, and I'll be your best friend.
How many times have I heard that one'? - MacMANUS: Hi, this is Rosie.
- Hello, Rosie, it's Eva.
Please leave a message.
Rosie, it's Eva.
If you get this message before you get home, ring me.
What's going on'? If I knew, I'd tell you.
Who is it? It's Marc, from the pub.
You left your mobile in the bar.
Hope I didn't freak you out.
Did you follow me'? I thought you might need it.
Thanks.
It's no problem.
Do you want a cup of tea'? Marc lied to us about having booked the hen party, and he's lied to us about never having met Louise Martin.
Let's bring him in and find out Why.
What are you going to do now'? Not a lot I can do from here, is there? Hang on.
There's more coming through.
Sorry I was a bit short with you.
I'm just tired and under a lot of pressure.
I know.
MacMANUS: Do you? Barman have pressure, too, you know.
We're a lot alike, you and me, Rose, you know.
We're both on the outside, looking in.
I think that's one of the great things about being a copper, yeah.
Being on the outside, but also, like, being part of a team.
Depends on the team.
I'll just get that.
Hello'? Rosie, thank God.
What is it'? We've had a bit of a breakthrough.
There's some sort of link between the murders and the pub.
That's where we gobbed off about Diane Cain's murder.
That's Where Louise Martin was the night she was killed.
We've pulled a load of stuff on Marc Sharaff, you know, the barman.
He's an ex-copper, number-one cadet at Hendon, Went on to serve at Kilburn Nick, where, interestingly, he only lasted six months.
Something to do with a colleague getting beaten up outside a pub.
Put the phone down and listen.
Are you there? I need you to go now, Marc.
You need me.
No, I want you to go now please.
Rosie'? You need me.
No, I need you to go.
Now, listen, you need me.
- My husband is upstairs.
- No, he's not.
- Yes, he is.
- No, no, no, no, no.
"What, with Stuart and the boys away, it'll be a chance for a nice, quiet night.
" Does that ring any bells, Rose'? Does it'? Nothing escapes me in that bar because I'm trained to listen, to read people.
You know as Well as I do either you got it or you haven't, and I've got it, Rose.
I've definitely got it.
Trevor Hands, What kind of a cop is he'? He's a bully with a badge, that's What he is.
I run rings around people like him, Rose.
Trevor.
It's Eva.
I'm going to need your help.
Everyone else saw a barman, but you.
You always saw my true potential.
You know What they told me once'? They told me that I froze when that moron got beaten to death.
But I didn't freeze, Rose.
He Went in there all guns blazing, and he got What he deserved.
You think you're so bloody special, don't you'? Eh'? Well, you're not.
You're not special at all.
You're just a bunch of bullies throwing your Weight around.
Come here.
Come here.
Now Yes.
I showed Trevor and I'll show you.
I'm better than any of you.
Rosie.
Rosie! Rosie'? Rosie'? Breathe.
Rosie, Rosie.
Come on, baby.
Rosie, speak to me.
Rosie! I'll be back.
You want some advice'? When you get inside, you find yourself the biggest, scariest son of a bitch you can find on your landing and you make yourself his wife because you're going to be in there along, longtime.
MacMANUS: Yeah, cheers.
Why'd you call the cavalry? I couldn't get ahold of anyone else, and he was closest.
How are you feeling? Going to have a sore throat for a while.
What? Nothing.
I was about to make a smart remark about you losing your voice and the office being a nicer place to work but I thought better of it.
You still said it.
It's compulsive.
That's because you're a pain in the ass.
Guilty.
Thank you.
All I had to do was kick down a door.
Eva's the one you should be thanking.
Hey, no, I got lucky.
Luck had nothing to do with it.
See you tomorrow, gov.
Absolutely.
I think you've made a friend there.
You never doubted him for a minute, did you'? MacMANUS: No.
Can I get you anything? MacMANUS: Yeah.
I could murder a cup of tea.
