Mission Impossible (1966) s06e06 Episode Script

The Miracle

Relax, Milt.
Nothing's that heavy.
I'm just figuring.
That boatload of "H" ought to be worth about 6 million.
Eight.
How come Taynor's okayed my seeing the landing site? On my say-so.
Taynor's late.
Yeah.
Milt.
Milt, you're the man.
What? You were sent in here to find out where Taynor gets his horse.
Frank, you've flipped.
Aah.
You messed up, boy.
You messed up bad.
Now turn around.
- Okay, Frank, I don't know how you did it, but, yeah, I came in to get Taynor, and we'll get him sooner or later.
And when we do, I can make it easier on you.
Save it.
I do my job.
That's all I do.
Frank, listen Good morning, Jim.
Seven weeks from now, on November 10th, $8 million worth of heroin will be landed at an unknown point along the coast.
Undercover agent, Milt Anderson, lost his life trying to find out where.
Only two men know the actual landing site.
Alvin Taynor, biggest narcotics dealer in the Northwest, and Frank Kearney, his chief executioner.
Conventional law enforcement agencies have been unable to develop any further information.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to intercept that heroin, and to get Taynor and Kearney.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
Jim, how long since the lverson mob actually put pressure on Taynor? A couple of months, Casey.
So far Taynor's been just too tough for them.
This is how it works.
Kearney will be on the camera itself.
I have all the necessary footage which we'll feed through the videotape unit.
The hospital's been very cooperative, Jim.
They've given us part of the fourth floor, and all the personnel we need.
How about Kearney's recovery rate, Barney? We'll control that with drugs.
He'll feel good fast.
But not too fast.
And he'll be discharged on the ninth of November.
One day before the boat is due to land.
Right.
Casey? I got the job.
- Mm-hmm.
Any problems with the church, Steve? No, Jim.
It'll be closed two or three months before they start remodeling.
From what you've told me about Kearney's background, he was raised at Saint Anthony's orphanage in New Orleans.
That's a pretty good place.
What made him go bad? He got in a minor scrape when he was 14, ran away.
From there on, it's been all downhill.
It's interesting though.
Last time he was in the penitentiary, they did quite a psychological workup on him.
His religious childhood left a deep unconscious mark.
Yes, and we're depending on that.
Now, under ordinary circumstances, neither Taynor nor Kearney would ever go near that boatload of narcotics.
Manny, one thing about Kearney-- he never carries his gun in the same place all the time.
Sometimes it's a holster, sometimes his pocket.
That going to bother you? Nah, I don't think so.
Barney.
Willie.
Sorry, Jim.
I just couldn't resist trying to fool the experts.
Willie.
Must you? Oh, and I thought you dug that kind of music.
Mr.
Taynor doesn't.
You're really pushy lately, aren't you? A little something extra for the Anderson job.
I like the way you handled it.
It was routine.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
Clumsy.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Forget it! Forget it! Look as this.
I've got to change.
I'll cover for you.
That guy, he was a stiff.
Thank you, boss.
Are you ready, Mr.
Kearney? You new here? Yes, sir.
I just started.
How'd you know my name? Well, uh, the, uh, the boss said that you were a very special customer.
And, well, besides that, I kind of wanted to meet you anyway.
Frank's the name, honey.
What's yours? Kitty.
Um The, uh, the halibut is-is real great tonight.
No, fish is a bummer, Kitty.
Um, New York steak, blood rare, baked potato, onion rings, garlic toast.
And you, sir? I'm not eating.
Okay.
Um, you're having the, uh, the New York.
You want, uh, red wine with that? Kitty, if you and I are gonna groove together, you got to pick up on what I dig and what I don't.
Vino's out-- red, white, pink or purple.
Beer is in.
Okay, beer.
Nice, huh? A broad.
That's your department.
You know, boss, smile.
The trouble with you, Kearney, is you don't worry enough.
I quit all that when I was 14.
That's when I figured them sisters was putting us on about hell.
Don't be too sure.
Try going on my diet for awhile.
In the front, Mr.
Taynor.
Now, don't let this bother you.
I only want to talk.
My name is Mallet, John Mallet.
I work for some people in California.
Iverson again, eh? Don't you people ever learn? We've upped the ante this time.
We're offering the whole California market.
Share and share alike.
In return for what? Half of the stuff that you're importing.
With your overseas connections and our distribution, we've got a perfect setup.
Just keep your hands where they are.
I've got a perfect setup now.
I don't need the California market.
Everything up here is mine.
And I mean to keep it that way.
Sorry you're being stubborn about this, because it's going to cost you, and in the end, we'll be partners anyway.
We know you've got a big shipment coming in early November.
Let's start with that.
Go home, Mr.
Mallet.
When we have a deal.
Okay.
Barney said this would put an elephant to sleep in four seconds.
The cook your brother or something? Oh, I take care of him every Christmas.
Watch out for all my friends.
Well, that's nice to know.
Say, I sure do like your suit.
Uh, Kitty, listen, um I like to just, uh, you know, have a ball.
Nothing heavy.
Can you dig it? Sure.
What time they cut you loose around here? Around 1:00.
What say I come, pick you up, have a drink, my place? Sounds groovy.
Till then.
Frank Kearney? Ah, who wants to know? No! Call an ambulance! "Oh, God most kind, the Father of mercies "and the God of all consolation, "it is your will that no one who believes "and hopes in you should perish.
"In your boundless mercy, "look with kindness on your servant Franklin, for true faith and Christian hope commend him to you.

He's got a bullet in his pump.
You find out who did it? A big guy nobody ever saw before.
Did they give Frank any anesthesia? That makes some people pretty talkative.
Who knows what they gave him? What's the difference? He's dying.
Well, hang in till it's over.

Taynor.
You wouldn't be the guy who hit Kearney, would you? Kearney? Who's Kearney? What do you want? Mr.
Mallet sent me.
He was just wondering if you've reconsidered.
Tell Mr.
Mallet that I've been pushed before, and I always give more than I get.
We'll be out of town for the next few weeks, but we'll be back before your next big shipment gets in.
What next shipment? Early November.
You see, we've got our contacts overseas, too, Taynor.
And we want in on it.
You tell Mr.
Mallet that if he keeps bothering me and my people, he may not be alive in early November.
We'll see, Mr.
Taynor.
You'll know when we get back to town.
Stabilized.
Will you close, Doctor? Yes, Dr.
Peterson.
Can you understand me? You're gonna make it.
You're gonna live.
Sam, you know I've got a lot of friends.
I'd hate to see your parole revoked.
What do you want to know? How Kearney's passing his time, who he talks to, who visits him.
I just like to keep track of my employees, that's all.
Okay, I-I'll keep in touch.
I take good care of my people, Evans.
Mmm, I'm flyin'.
That dude must have really been something else.
What dude? Oh, this ticker donor here.
Who was he? He asked to be anonymous.
You feel good because outside of the bullet you were in perfect condition when we made the transplant.
All previous patients had suffered some kind of prior organic deterioration because of weakened hearts.
Nurse.
- Yes, Doctor? Say, what does this junkie shoot me up with every day? It's a drug to keep you from rejecting your new heart.
That'll be fine, Nurse, thank you.
- Thank you.
You can come in now, Miss Norman.
Thanks, Doc.
How's the patient today? If I were you, I wouldn't get too close.
Hi.
Hi.
Come on in.
Sit here.
Sure.
Say, why do you hang around here so much, huh? I have no plans on being a bedridden invalid, so if you have ideas about taking me over You are a trip.
Take you over? I'd rather take over a barracuda.
That's the way I like to hear you talk.
- But I am real proud of you-- look at that.
I hope I'm not intruding.
- You are.
I've been meaning to stop in.
I'm Father Thompson.
So? - Well, I was here the night you had your operation, and I administered last rites to both you and the donor.
So you wasted your time.
See you around.
- Well, what I want to talk to you about Forget it! Oh.
Very well.
Here! Take that with you.
I'm afraid that belongs to the hospital.
Miss.
Hypocrites! Hello.
Taynor, this is John Mallet.
I'm back in town.
This is your last chance to deal.
Mallet's back.
I'm uptight! I want out! This Next week, Frank.
Doc We're accelerating the treatment.
This place freaks me out.
Oh - Now, Frank, I want you to start counting backward from 100.
No, I don't want to.
Oh! - Backwards, Frank.
Let's go.
Father McAllister sips wine at Mass, doesn't he, Frank? From a silver cup.
It's a beautiful cup, isn't it? Yes, it's beautiful.
Wine is very special, isn't it, Frank? Yes.
In fact, you'd like some of it right now.
Gentlemen, we have another shipment due the tenth.
High-grade like always.
We'll make delivery the next day.
Right? Look over there.
Who is it? That's Kitty.
You love Kitty.
I don't love anybody.
Touch her, Frank.
She loves you, Frank.
I love you, Frank.
She'll make a good wife.
You don't just want her for a girlfriend.
You want her for a wife.
My darling.
Say it, Frank.
You want to marry her.
I want to marry you.
One, two, three, four, five, yeah.
Cameron, we got 50 grand coming from you.
All right, everybody, freeze! Now, one by one, reach in your pockets, put your guns on the table.
Dr.
Callahan, Dr.
Callahan, call 125 West.
I-I'm sorry.
I-I thought, uh Drop the gun.
I have no information about Sam Evans.
Have you checked with personnel? Yeah, but they said he just quit showing up for work.
Then I guess that's it.
Huh.
Yeah.
Nothing.
I think we scared him away.
I'm not so sure.
Benton this contract is yours.
Right.
I've got business near here.
Mr.
Kearney? Who are you? My name's Mallet.
I work for some people in California.
No more employer- employee relationships.
A full partnership.
And all I have to do is hit Alvin Taynor.
No, I didn't say that.
If I want Taynor hit, I've got people who can handle it as well as you, and maybe even better.
You want me to go on? Not especially.
You get out of the hospital today.
I want that shipment of heroin that comes in tomorrow morning.
I figure it'll go eight or nine million dollars on the street, and half of that is yours.
Think it over.
I'll call you.
I'll take that.
Now get going.
Thanks.
No restrictions? No.
There'll be a physical checkup every week, and in two weeks, we'd like for you to come back for a psychological workup.
Psychological? Now, why psychological? Whether you realize it or not, Frank, you've been through quite a trauma.
Transplant patients sometimes have strange reactions.
What kind of strange reactions, Doc? Don't give me any of your double-talk, either.
Simply stated, you have another man's heart beating inside of you.
You're gonna begin to wonder whether it's affecting your behavior, the way you feel about things.
Don't worry, Doc.
It won't.
Are you sure? Mr.
Kearney? Father.
Mr.
Taynor.
Frank.
It sure is good to see you again.
I've been counting the hours.
Yeah? - My place? Sure.
Great.
- When you get off.
As soon as I get off.
- Okay.
Hi, Frank.
Hello, Benton.
How are you doing, boy? Hmm? Mr.
Taynor's here.
Welcome back.
Sorry I couldn't get to the hospital.
You understand.
Mm-hmm.
He was too busy to worry about it.
You watch your mouth, boy.
Why, Frank, that's not like you at all to get upset over a broad.
I don't like being spied on.
You ready, Frank? - Yeah.
Trout in white wine.
What? Trout in white Look, I had steak in the hospital until it's coming out my ears.
Okay.
Who else did you see in the hospital beside the girl? Mallet, and you know it.
What did he want? The shipment of "H" tomorrow.
I want him hit.
There'll be a big bonus in it.
$20,000.
I may be able to do it.
He's got to call me before the shipment comes in.
I'll try to set up a meeting.
"May"? "Try"? That doesn't sound like you, Frank.
What are you hassling me for? What do you mean, it doesn't sound like me? "It's not like you, Fr" This is me, Frank Kearney! Uptight.
Do you want me to bone it for you, Frank? Do you really want to know what you can do with that fish? He sure is grumpy.
Anybody want a dead fish? Young lady nobody wants a dead fish.
Want to open that for me? Sure.
I hate wine.
It makes me sick! Well, then, why'd you order it at the restaurant? I don't know! I don't know why I'm doing a lot of things lately.
Like what, honey? Like, quit bugging me.
Gee, all I said was, "Like what?" Aw, shut up! One thing I don't need's a nagging wife.
Wash your mouth with soap.
What? You just called me your wife.
Hey, you don't want me to be your wife.
Girlfriends are more fun than wives, aren't they? Hmm? Look, I'll go change.
Honey, what's wrong? You're all sweaty and Look, a-am I too much for you tonight? All I meant was, you just got out of the hospital! Go change, huh? All right.
You wait right here-- okay? Yeah.
Okay.
Now our public service special, Science in the '70s, Tonight's topic, "The Human Transplant and the Mind.
" Until recently, surgeons paid no attention to the psychological implications of vital organ transplants.
Now, all that has changed.
Patients are concerned about who their donors were.
More than that, recent experiments indicated that certain patients take on a number of behavior patterns which correspond to patterns in their donors.
In other words, they become a little like Put that on! What? Honey, I-I'm sorry.
I-I didn't know you were listening.
What else do you think I was doing? Hey Let's dance.
Hmm? Let's dance.
Mmm Fresh.
What's the matter? Don't you want to be close to me? Yeah, sure, Kitty, but not here, not now.
Not like this.
It's Maybe it's 'cause I almost died or something, Kitty, but I want something more.
Did you ever hear that it's better to marry than be burnt? Oh, wow! A super square.
Complete with Bible quotes, yet.
What are you talking about? I am talking about the fact that you have changed.
You're different.
It's creepy.
I mean, the guy I was waiting for was, was fun.
He was alive.
You make me feel like I need a bath! Hello? Yes, he's here.
It's for you.
Hello.
I called your favorite restaurant.
They gave me this number.
Do we split the "H" tomorrow or not? Um, yeah, we got a deal.
Let's meet and talk it over, huh? All right.
My place.
I'm staying at No, no, I'll call the shots.
There's a garage just off Fourth and Main.
I'll be inside.
All right.
40 minutes.
Mallet, come alone.
Hello.
Uh, Mallet just contacted me.
It'll all be over in about 40 minutes.
I'll give you a call when I finish.
I'm gonna go pick up me and when I come back, we'll see who's square.
I'm sorry.
Watch yourself! Well, I said I'm sorry.
Hello.
Don't fight it.
Just take it easy.
Kearney! They must have taken out more than your heart, Kearney.
It's all right.
I don't mind working with half a man.
Now where's that boat coming in in the morning? I'm still gonna kill you.
Yeah? That gun's broken.
I couldn't pull that trigger.
The trouble's with you, Kearney, not with the gun.
Now get out of here! A souvenir, Manny.
Thanks.
Kearney.
Hello.
Taynor, you made a bad mistake.
You sent a boy to do a man's job.
You're dead.
Kearney screwed it up.
I'm worried about the heroin.
Kitty, there's something I gotta know! Frank, it's 6:00 in the morning! You had me scared to death! The priest in the hospital, the one who said he gave last rites to that donor, what's that priest's name? Um, um, Johnson.
Johnson.
- Father Johnson.
What church? How should I know? I Oh, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Uh, wait.
I-I mentioned it to the cook and the cook said he knew him and he was from, uh, uh Kitty! St.
John's.
St.
John's.
Father Johnson.
St.
John's.
You must understand, I have no choice.
Please leave now.
Look, you don't understand.
I don't leave here until you tell me.
I must respect the dead man's wishes.
Oh, Father.
Please go.
Look! You want to die, too? Look, I grew up with priests! You're nothing special to me! Now don't be a fool! Frank.
He's gonna tell me who the donor was.
Father, he's crazy.
He'll kill you.
Tell him what he wants to know for his own soul's sake.
It was Antony, my brother in God's service, Father Antony.
A priest? Why, yes, of course.
Right here in this church.
What kind of a man was he? Tell me about him.
Oh, he was a good man.
"Good.
" None of you are any good! You're all rotten! May God forgive you.
Forgive me for what? I'm the one that's cursed! I was 14 when I ran away from you people because I hated your guts.
Now to have this thing beating inside of me! I'd have been better off dead.
They should have just let me die.
Frank, let's go.
Don't, please! Let's go.
Are you all right? For now.
What was it, Frank? Kitty, how much do you know about me? Everything.
Kitty I was good.
I was real good.
You got to believe that.
I had a contract tonight.
I couldn't pull the trigger.
Just Taynor's way of saying good-bye.
And this is Kitty with the same message.
Kitty, no.
What? Look, I love you.
You've got to come with me.
Come where? South America.
Oh, sure, South America.
That's great.
And, Frank, what are we gonna live on? I mean, I suppose you could always go on exhibition as the, uh, "Killer with the heart of a priest.
" Frank, you're just not good for anything anymore.
Come on.
You're gonna see.
You're gonna see.
You wait here.
What's in the boat? $8 million.
Hi.
Frank, what are you doing here? The boss wants me to pick this stuff up personally.
I'm supposed to leave it on the pier like always.
Don't give me a hard time.
Mr.
Taynor, he's scared of a heist.
What about payment? The usual way.
Be my guest.
What are you doing, Frank? Well, I got worried about the stuff.
So did I after I got a call from Mallet and Benton couldn't locate you.
Oh? Put it down, Frank.
Oh, Mr.
Taynor Put it down.
It's not my fault! You gotta believe me.
I didn't mean to do that.
Look, they did something to me in the hospital, huh? Maybe they killed me in the hospital, huh? Didn't they? Yes, Frank, I'm afraid they did.
No! Don't! Drop the gun, Benton! Mr.
Taynor what's in the footlocker?
