Nashville s03e19 Episode Script

The Storm Has Just Begun

Previously on "Nashville" You guys are really good together.
- Should I be worried? - No.
Just music.
The songs are all written and done, but I guess I didn't want our time together to come to an end.
I'm sick.
I got cancer.
Your only option is a liver transplant.
- Who are you? - I'm the nanny.
- Where's my wife? - She left a little while ago.
I got to quit the band for the baby's sake.
Layla Grant, the perfect guest star for you while you're in town.
I'll do you a favor if you do one for me.
I want to meet Luke Wheeler.
She really hurt you, didn't she? I mean, I didn't know half this stuff was here.
Those are Carl Perkins' actual blue suede shoes.
Kitty Wells' guitar.
I should learn to play.
What, you're a Kitty Wells fan? Uh, not many people know this, but I'm a big country-music geek.
Kitty paved the way for patsy, who paved the way for Loretta, who's pretty much a goddess to me.
She is a class act.
Speaking of classy, look at that.
Come on I want to show you why I really asked you to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
And museum.
Oh, man.
What was I thinking with that hair? I was obsessed with this album.
I even sang "Shotgun" at my 8th-grade talent show.
Something tells me you didn't just bring me here to make fun of my mullet.
I want to make a country album, and my label's not too excited about the idea, and I was really hoping you might consider singing a duet with me just to help make my case.
I'm flattered.
I really am.
But, uh shoot.
Between starting my own label and launching my next album, I'm not sure I can commit to something like that right now.
Yeah.
I I figured as much.
I I had to ask.
Tell you what, though.
I'm going to this, uh, music charity thing tonight.
Why don't you come with me? Bunch of industry folks will be there, and maybe you'll meet somebody else who'll do you the honor.
Yeah? Yeah.
A all right.
Why can't we keep it on the sweet side? See how it feels to take a slow ride this time Whoa! You sound good on that groove, girl.
Oh.
You wrote it, Dad.
Yeah, well, your mom wrote most of it.
Oh.
Everybody sounded great.
All right, y'all, let's get everything packed up so we can get home, - change, and get back here, okay? - Okay.
Honey.
Don't do this tonight if you're not feeling up for it.
I'm not gonna miss this, all right? It's not pushing it just to live my life.
Thank you for caring, though.
Hey! I'm back from L.
A.
hello? Sandra? Hi.
H hi.
What a lovely surprise.
Shouldn't be.
I told you when you were in L.
A.
You did.
You know, I'm so sorry.
I was just so busy, I slipped my mind.
How long are you gonna be here? Till you and I agree on a more permanent childcare situation.
Welcome, then.
This little angel is a pleasure.
But you must miss her.
Here Oh, gosh, no.
You guys look so comfortable together.
Please, please.
And I've got to get ready for the fundraiser we have tonight.
Wait we're still going to that? You know what you should come.
I'm gonna be singing.
Bo, will you be back here in an hour to pick us up? You got it.
Thank you.
She can't come.
She's our babysitter.
And since when are you singing tonight? Since I found out there's a command performance being auctioned off tonight, and Rayna's gonna bid enough money for me to get up there on that stage.
Too cute.
You left for three days, and already committed us to this? Juliette, we're supposed to be making these decisions together.
- I mean, this is - Can we please not talk about this right now? I really have to focus on tonight.
It's, like, kind of my comeback.
Well, if that's the case, maybe I should just stay home.
Don't want to distract you.
If that's what you want to do.
It's too bad.
You're gonna miss a hell of a show.
You realize that between my place and yours, we haven't been outside for days.
There's nothing but trees and sky out there, anyway.
Unfortunately I do have to get back to the real world tonight.
I'm going to some big charity event Luke Wheeler invited me to.
The Note by Note fundraiser? Yeah.
No way.
I'm going to that, too.
I'm a mentor for the program.
Oh.
I guess I'll be seeing more of you, then.
Yeah.
But listen, just so you know, I'm bringing someone.
I I invited him like a month ago, this guy I've hung out with a few times.
Does that freak you out? 'Course not.
Why would that freak me out? It's just been four days.
It's not like we're Right.
I'll see you there, then.
Yeah.
See you there.
That was fantastic.
Seriously, I I love your playing.
- Thanks, man.
- Uh, guess we'll, uh, give you a call, all right? Whew! All right.
Take care.
Mm? He smelled like wet cardboard.
Well, I didn't notice any particular odor.
And he mumbled everything.
Oh, come on, Scarlett.
You've been doing this for four days.
This one is too pitchy.
This one's oh, he's got a funky haircut.
Come on.
We've auditioned some phenomenal musicians.
Can you just stop dragging your heels and pick one, please? We're gonna be spending a lot of time with this guy, and it ain't too much to ask that he bathe regularly and I can understand him.
You sure this is all you're worried about? Okay, so, maybe it's time that we stop trying to make something that's not supposed to happen happen.
- What is that supposed to mean? - The band.
It's not the same without Avery.
Just scrap it.
- How's motherhood, Juliette? - Wonderful.
You are glowing so much, we don't even need the flash.
Thank you.
It's like riding a bike, right? Oh, Jade! Hey! Jade! - Jade! Luke! - Hey, y'all.
Except for the part where I get upstaged by a pop diva.
What is she doing here? Love the new look, Jade.
You two together? No, we're just friends, and, uh We are both, uh, big supporters of music in education.
- Hey! Hey.
- Hey.
- Two prettiest ladies here.
- Aww.
This place looks amazing, Dad.
Yeah, seriously.
You did such a great job.
- Thanks, honey.
- Where are we gonna sit? I would assume you're sitting at the mayor's table.
Oh! Look at the guitars! - Oh, my gosh, the guitars.
- Check them out.
- Guitars.
- Guitars.
Hey, um, thanks for letting the girls sit at my table tonight and for singing.
I just want you to know your support means a lot to me.
I'm happy to be here.
It's a great cause.
Yeah.
And look, I I know that things have been a little challenging for me over the last few months, but I want you to know that's all behind me.
Glad to hear it.
Well, have fun tonight.
You too.
It's a big night for you.
- Gonna be good.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
Fingers crossed.
So, I'm pretty sure Daphne just bid on a pony.
Of course.
You want to go do this red carpet thing? Yeah, let's do it.
Hello? Yeah.
Yeah? Okay.
Yeah.
Thank you.
What's going on? That was my doctor.
They, uh found a liver.
Y'all, listen um, Deacon got a call from the hospital, and they found him a liver.
- What?! - So we're going right now and getting him prepped for surgery.
- Wow.
- Oh, my gosh.
Can you take care of these guys? - Yeah, absolutely.
- Wait what? No way.
No, no, no.
I I want to come.
No, darling.
We have no idea how long it's gonna take.
Hospitals are not fun.
But I want to be there for him and for you.
I mean, it's so much more important than being here.
I'm so sorry.
No offense.
- It's okay, honey.
- Please.
Okay.
Okay.
You gonna be all right, sweetie? We're gonna hold down the fort, right? - Sure.
- Okay.
I love you.
- Thank you, Dad.
I love you.
- All right.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
You bet.
You okay? I was really excited to sing tonight.
And now that they're gone, I can't.
Yeah.
Still here? Yeah.
My battery's dead again.
You could've come inside.
Damn it! Damn it! Ohh! Listen, Scarlett, I I I don't want things to be awkward between us anymore, okay? I I know you're seeing somebody, and if I've been weird about that, I'm sorry.
I I i it's gonna stop, okay? 'Cause I don't want it to get in the way of our music.
And I just think bailing right now on the band, that's that's a really bad idea, okay? - _ - Oh, my god.
No.
I can't - I can't talk about this now.
- _ We I I got to get to the hospital.
- The hospital? - Deacon's having surgery.
- What? - I got I got to go to the hospital.
I - Wha - Um I'll fill you in if you give me a ride.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
- Hey! - You look gorgeous.
Thank you.
Where's Rayna? Oh, she had to leave uh, family matter.
Oh.
Everything okay? It will be.
Do you need me to take over? Because we can throw this whole auction thing, you know, right out the window.
You know, I thought about that, actually, but, uh, the mayor has his own plans.
But don't worry.
I got the auction.
We're gonna get you up on that stage.
Bucky! Hey.
Hey.
We just claimed our seats at the Highway 65 table.
I hope that's okay.
Were they supposed to be assigned? No, that's great.
Did you purposely not tell me that they were sitting at our table? Mm.
Been a while.
When are you gonna have that baby? - Ohh! - Stop.
Just ignore him.
- You look amazing.
- I know.
I think we need a few drinks before we go "claim our seats.
" See ya.
Did you know that Jade was gonna be here? No.
You know, the Tennessean and Nashville scene gave my set at her concert really good reviews.
You should see if there's a more permanent spot for me on her tour.
No.
Are you gonna use any other words tonight? Look, a one-off was fine, okay, but it's a bad idea to keep associating with pop when we're rebranding.
Or, like I said before no.
Once we finish this paperwork, we'll get you a room and do some preliminary bloodwork.
I is it possible for us to speak to Dr.
Dellaverson? She's en route to Columbus with the rest of the transplant team.
Assuming everything looks good, they'll harvest the liver and head straight back here.
And how long does that take? A few hours maybe longer.
We'll get you prepped and into the O.
R.
As soon as we hear from them.
Okay.
This is really happening, guys.
Mm.
Thank you for the ride.
No worries.
Give Deacon my best.
I will.
Thank you.
Okay, fill me in.
Tell me everything.
What happened? Couldn't be a more perfect match.
- Oh! Okay.
- Okay.
Come on, come on.
I'll show you to him.
Okay.
Let's go.
Hey, cowboy.
Who you looking for? You.
How 'bout this table, huh? Any closer, we'd be up onstage.
Well, that's what you get when you play in the big leagues.
Speaking of which, I'd like you to meet someone.
Jade St.
John, Will Lexington, Wheelin' Dealin's next big thing after me.
This boy's gonna be selling out stadiums when his new album comes out.
I know who he is.
I'm I'm a big fan.
The feeling is mutual.
'Scuse me, y'all.
Um, mind if I borrow you for a second? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sure.
Sure.
Uh, will is a hell of a singer.
You two get to know each other.
Excuse me one second.
Hey, listen, I know this is last-minute, but Rayna had to bow out unexpectedly, and I was hoping you might fill in.
Everything all right? I'm not at liberty to say.
Teddy, I, uh I know about Deacon.
- You do? - Tough break.
Yeah.
Guy's been a thorn in my side, and nobody knows better than you what that feels like, but, uh, I wouldn't wish what he's going through on anybody.
Well, look, the good news is they found him a liver.
- Really? - Yes.
They're at the hospital right now.
And Maddie went with them, of course.
Well, I know how hard it's been on her.
It's been tough on both girls which is why I have another favor to ask you.
So, are you part of the mayor's program? Not yet, no, but my my friend is, uh, is one of the mentors, so, uh Hey! I haven't seen you in forever.
Um, hi.
I did not know that you were still in town.
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the opportunity to play at your show.
My pleasure.
Truth be told, I was kind of hoping you'd suck, if only to prove Jeff wrong.
He is the worst when he's right, isn't he? Totally.
Tell me about it.
Can I get you two a drink? Um, white wine? - That sounds great.
Thanks.
- All right.
Thanks.
I have to say, I kind of feel like it's fate that you're here, just 'cause, you know, I admire you so much.
What possessed you guys to sign that little copycat? Well, I mean, she's grown a lot since "American Hitmaker.
" Really? And Jeff's building a really solid fan base for her, so we actually have pretty high expectations for the first album.
Mm.
Speaking of albums, I need to get back in the studio and finish mine.
Okay.
When? Soon as possible.
Baby's out, I'm back to work.
I quit the band to help Juliette out.
And you see what's going on here.
I'm basically alone.
That's probably how she felt when you were out on tour and she was pregnant at home.
Hon, I understand how stressful this is.
A baby's got a lot of needs.
So does Juliette, and so do you.
Yeah, but the baby's supposed to come first, right? Absolutely.
But a baby can't take care of you back.
That's why you've got each other.
Yeah, well, it sure doesn't feel like it right now, 'cause Juliette is acting like You can lay blame or you can try and fix the problem.
Only one of those is going to make a marriage stronger.
How much time you spend on this thing? Not a ton.
- Oh, really? - Really.
Tell him what level you're on.
- 860.
- 860.
Yes.
- Yes, it is.
- Oh, all right, look.
If this is about the noise, it's their fault.
It's not mine, okay? - Oh, hey, Doctor.
- Hey.
Uh, actually, we have a little bit of an issue.
- What kind of issue? - You have a fever.
It's low-grade just 100.
5.
So what does that mean? Well, it means that we need to figure out what's causing it so that the surgical team can determine how to proceed.
Look, I feel fine, okay? Absolutely fine.
Well, the fever says that you're not.
If it's something relatively manageable, they'll likely move forward.
"Likely.
" Wait he may not get the surgery? Well, if it's more serious, like pneumonia, then we run the risk of your body rejecting the liver, and they won't operate if that's the case.
So we're gonna run a few tests now, okay, and we're gonna get to the bottom of this.
I know they're about to go into surgery on the patient in Ohio.
What if we don't have these results by then? Well, then, the liver goes to the next recipient on the transplant list.
Um, I'll be right back.
I'm sorry about this.
But we're gonna sort this out as fast as we can.
If there's anything else I can do, let me know.
Caleb.
Is there something you can do, somebody you can talk to? Wha that's not how this works.
Um, that's the surgical team's decision, and I'm not on the surgical team.
Please do something.
Please do something.
Surely you must have some sway on the surgical team.
There's a protocol.
Look, what if Deacon were to reject the liver that could have gone to someone else on the transplant list, someone equally as deserving? What if the tumor gets too big? What if they can't find a liver? Then Maddie loses her father, I lose my uncle.
We we can't just let him die.
Everyone on that list has someone that feels exactly the same way.
I can't compromise my integrity because we're in a relationship.
And I wish you wouldn't ask me to do that.
Scarlett.
Wait so you did pageants, too? You're looking at the 1998 Miss Sacramento Walnut Princess.
Hey.
There you are.
Hey.
Uh, come with me.
I want to introduce you to Clay Hunnicutt.
Was he always this bossy when you knew him? Worse.
You know, I can see why you're so excited about this one.
She reminds me a lot of me when I was starting out.
I think that's the best compliment I've ever gotten.
- Okay.
Let's go.
- Relax.
And sit.
- Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, - This isn't our table.
- Oh, well, it's starting.
- And thank you for coming out tonight to support Note by Note, my administration's music-education initiative.
I'd also like to say thanks to the Gaylord Opryland Resort for hosting us this evening.
And in about an hour, we are gonna have our live auction for a command performance by anyone here tonight.
Now, unfortunately, Rayna Jaymes had a last-minute change of plans, but this gentleman has graciously offered to step in and help kick things off tonight, so please give a warm Nashville welcome to Luke Wheeler.
Thank y'all.
Uh, the mayor's asked me to, uh, share the stage with a very special young lady, and of course I said yes not only because she's a participant in the Note by Note program, but also because she happens to be a real good buddy of mine.
Please welcome to the stage Miss Daphne Conrad.
Come on up, Daphne.
Thanks, Dad.
Love you.
All right, now, have fun.
How about "Have a Little Faith in Me"? You want to sing that? - Yeah.
Yeah.
-Yeah? Okay.
"Have a Little Faith" in "C.
" Thanks.
When the road gets dark and you can no longer see just let my love throw a spark have a little faith in me have a little faith in me have a little faith in me have a little faith in me Hey.
I was looking for you everywhere.
I needed some quiet time.
Do you think Dad's gonna die, Mom? If this surgery doesn't happen, you know? I don't know.
I'm just scared.
Me too.
Do you want to pray? Yeah.
You see, time, time is our friend but for us, there is no end all you gotta do is have faith in me have a little faith in me have a little faith in me have a little faith in me-e-e Yeah! Miss Daphne Conrad! Give it up! Thank you.
So, I'm not doing the whole "maternity leave" thing.
Take your time with your album.
Because when it comes to the priorities at Highway 65, the line forms behind me.
Really? It's just, you know, no one's really heard from you since you canceled your tour.
I'm the lead in a major motion picture coming out soon.
Wouldn't be surprised if it got nominated for a few awards.
And you started off as a talent-show runner-up, covering my sloppy seconds.
Well, she just opened for me, and from what I see, she's the real deal.
I'm sorry I don't remember anybody talking to you.
Wow.
Touring with her was hell.
I thought shots were in order.
Well, I hope you brought enough for everybody.
- Hey.
- Hey.
We were just talking about you two.
Oh, yeah? Yeah, about the demos you two recorded.
Will, you're becoming quite the songwriter.
Well I couldn't have done it without this guy.
Well, to a great new partnership.
Bicks and Lexington, may the two of you have a hell of a future together.
Wow.
It's a different zip code over here.
Mm.
This is Chad, everybody.
They got us sitting over in the nosebleed section.
Yeah, but at least we're sitting back there together.
Well, hey, bourbon is bourbon no matter what zip code you're in.
I say we have some more.
What do you think? Sorry.
I I I didn't mean to intrude.
I was just No, that's all right.
looking for Scarlett.
Wanted to drop these off.
Replaced her battery.
Well, that was nice.
It's the least I could do.
- Well, I'll get them to her.
- Oh.
She told me about what's been going on with you.
I'm really sorry.
I'm not gonna lie it's been a bit of a sucker punch.
But, hey, at least you got some good news tonight, right? Yeah, well, we thought so, but it looks like I might not be getting that surgery after all.
Been pretty hard on Rayna and Maddie.
Scarlett's reeling herself.
What about you? How you feeling? Little foolish.
You know, for thinking it would all work out.
Like Charlie Brown and that damn football.
Isn't that what everybody loves about the guy? - What, that he's stupid? - No.
No matter how many times he falls flat on his back, he he never gives up hope that it's all gonna go his way.
I mean Without that, what you got? The winner of 10 blowouts from Blown Away - So, is this seat taken? - Janice Rogolsky.
You came! Come on up here, Janice.
Couldn't miss a chance to hear you sing.
- Thank you! - Congratulations.
Come on.
Sit down.
And now now it's the moment we've all been waiting for.
Time to auction off our live command performance of the evening.
I know you have your picks out there.
Get your checkbooks out.
Let's start the bidding tonight at $10,000.

John.
Thank you for your absolutely generous support.
Now, without further ado, please, please welcome to the stage Layla Grant.
All right, everybody.
Give it up one more time for Layla Grant.
That was fantastic.
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to leave.
Yeah.
Let's do it.
Nice one, Bucky.
You have to be on my tour as the opener, not some special-guest pre-opener.
Are you joking? You were absolutely amazing.
Thank you so much.
That, um, that means a lot to me.
C come on, Juliette you have to admit, Layla's performance was worth every penny.
You know what, honey? You can waltz around in your little country Barbie jacket and hold on to Luke Wheeler's hand like he's some golden ticket, but don't think for a second that everyone doesn't see right through you.
You could've spent a million dollars tonight, and it wouldn't distract anyone from the fact that this is Nashville and you don't belong here.
Okay.
I th I think we should leave.
This is a terrible way to pass the time.
The way you play.
Hi.
Gunnar got your car fixed and dropped off your keys.
That is a good dude.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You got any news? No.
We're still in a holding pattern.
- Where's Maddie? - She's out there texting with Colt.
Yeah, apparently, it's not a crisis unless you're texting it with your boyfriend.
What? Nothing.
About your situation or mine? I don't got no situation.
All right.
Suit yourself.
Well, how did you do it? Y'all sang together for years knowing there was something complicated between you two.
You didn't let it affect the music.
Well, the complicated stuff was kind of what made the music great.
Can't let that get in your way.
I don't want anybody to get hurt.
Sometimes that's exactly what you got to risk to make something beautiful.
I think Gunnar knows that.
I mean, she was with Teddy, and I didn't like that, but I dealt with it so we could keep making that music.
Hey.
How you feeling, Deacon? Like kicking a football.
Well, you might need to wait a few weeks on that at least until you get your stitches out.
You've been cleared for surgery.
Labs showed that it was a sinus infection, which is totally manageable.
So, uh, they're gonna get you on an antibiotic drip and into prep.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Sure.
Hey, Jade, you all right? Hey, look, don't take it personally.
Juliette's just a little high-strung, that's all.
No, she's right.
Maybe I am trying to buy my way in.
Maybe this whole country idea is just a big mistake.
No, no, no.
Don't say that.
You know what? I promised you a fun night, and I'm gonna make good on that.
What do you say we go somewhere and restore your faith in country music? Should I text her? Or call? I'm I'm worried about her.
- Don't be.
- Oh, god.
Do you think that she changed her mind about taking me on tour? Doesn't matter, Layla.
It's like I told you earlier you're not going.
Look, what happened between you two was a long time ago, okay? You need to get over it, because it's seriously affecting your judgment.
- You don't know what you're talking about.
- Do you? Or can you really not see that this is a huge opportunity? Of course I know it is, okay? Tons of exposure for you, lots of money for both of us.
Then what's the problem? Let me tell you about Jade.
She uses people until she doesn't need them anymore, And then she throws them away like they're nothing.
Do you think it's a compliment that she sees herself in you? No.
It's a reason to run like hell away from her.
I'm trying to protect you.
No tour.
End of discussion.
No, thanks.
I'll find my own ride.
All right, you know what? Enough with the silent treatment.
Keep your voice down.
Why? So we don't wake your mother? Actually, I was more concerned about our daughter.
- Oh, and I'm not? - I don't know.
I mean, I have no idea what you're thinking.
'Cause you don't you don't talk to me.
You go to L.
A.
on your own.
You quit nursing on your own.
Juliette, I can't do this alone.
I know you can't.
That's why I hired a nanny.
And you fired her.
I am trying to meet you halfway, but you can't even see that because you're so wrapped up in yourself.
What are you talking about? You picked a fight with a complete stranger because you didn't get a chance to sing.
She was so out of line.
No, Juliette! You were! And it scares me that you don't know that! Tonight was about music in schools, not a Juliette Barnes comeback.
Honestly, what the hell is wrong with you?! Any chance you can take me home? I thought you came with Jeff Fordham.
I didn't realize the two of you were hanging out after his party.
Well, he is my manager.
That all? It's complicated.
Well, for what it's worth, Jeff seems pretty simple to me.
He only cares about you if you make him money.
I don't know if that's true.
You ready to go? Uh actually, I'm I'm just gonna grab a cab.
Thanks, though.
We're lucky, aren't we, Dad? To have each other.
We sure are, kiddo.
Do you think Mom would let me live here for a little while? You know, I I can't imagine she would.
Why not? You're my dad.
My only dad.
Being at Mom's just doesn't feel like home anymore.
Well, I'll tell you what.
I, uh I'll ask her, okay? Soon as Deacon's out of the woods.
Promise? I promise.
Ooh.
The Bluebird.
I've heard so much about this place.
I can't believe I'm actually here.
You've played here a lot, haven't you? I sure have, yeah.
I don't think I could do it.
It's way too intimidating.
You kidding me? You play stadiums.
Exactly hiding behind smoke and mirrors and costume changes.
I mean, this place, you're just you.
Hey, everybody.
Welcome to the Bluebird.
We've got a very special guest with us tonight.
Miss Jade St.
John is here.
She's a big fan of country music, so I've heard, and I was hoping we could kick this next set off with a song from her.
Is this your doing? Hey, listen, nobody will accuse you of buying country cred here.
But they'll sure let you know if you've earned it.
What do you say, Jade? Want to get up and sing one? You're so good with her.
I'm sorry.
I hate fighting with you.
Me too.
And look at everything we went through to bring this little miracle into the world together.
I want us to be on the same side, Juliette.
But you got to let me in.
I want to.
I do.
I just don't really understand everything that's going on with me.
It's just such a big change.
I was inducted into the Opry.
I played a country-music icon.
And now all that stuff just seems so far away.
You're gonna get it all back again.
It's just gonna take a little time.
What if I don't get it back? What if I become irrelevant at 25? That's not possible.
You will always be the unforgettable Juliette Barnes.
And someday soon, you're gonna start to feel like her again.
I promise.
I'd like to sing an old song by a new friend of mine.
It's one of my favorites.
It's called "Shotgun.
" Mm when did you know your heart was mine? You've told the tale so many times there's nothing better we've got to do with all these miles to get to where we're going to it's a hard road, honey and there ain't nobody I'd rather be next to it's a rough ride, baby but we're gonna make it together me and you when you're tired, I'll grab the wheel and you'll take over when I'm done love is taking turns riding shotgun when did you know? Tell me again my heart was yours when you walked in you made a vow to hold it dear and you kept your promise to me all these years oooh it's a hard road, honey and there ain't nobody I'd rather be next to it's a rough ride, baby but we're gonna make it together me and you when you're tired, I'll grab the wheel and you'll take over when I'm done love is taking turns riding shotgun whoa, ooh, ooh yeah oh, yeah it's you and me against the world you are my man, and I'm your girl and when we're old, I'll take your hand and ask you then "when did you know? Tell me again" Jade St.
John.
We have a problem.
Hey, Deacon.
Deacon? Deacon, hey, can you hear me? How'd I do? Um there was a problem in Columbus.
After they took the liver out of the donor, the surgical team found cancerous lesions on the donor's lungs.
They didn't want to take the risk that the cancer had spread to I didn't get the surgery.
No.
But we found one donor.
We'll be able to find another one.
- Will we? - Well, we can hope.
Hey, thanks for tonight.
I haven't felt that connected to an audience in a really long time.
Well, that was all you.
And about that album you want to record you don't need me or anybody else singing a duet with you to prove you can do country.
You showed that tonight.
Well, you want to come back to L.
A.
with me and tell that to my label? Sure sounds tempting.
Did you really sing "Shotgun" at your 8th-grade talent show? I had braces and an asymmetrical haircut.
It so wasn't pretty.
Well, couldn't be any worse than my first album cover.
Don't sell yourself short.
I had a poster of that hanging over my bed, and I kissed you every night before I went to sleep.
Well Would it be all right if the real thing kissed you back? It'd be kind of crazy great.
I like that you have a favorite bar.
Makes you easier to find.
What can I get for you? Uh, sea breeze on his tab.
You got it.
Here's the thing I'm going on tour with Jade.
Of course you are.
Why would you listen to me? I heard every word that you said.
You're willing to walk away from money for yourself 'cause you're looking out for me.
And you are still ignoring my advice.
No.
I'm just ignoring your concern.
Here you go.
Thanks.
I'm not gonna turn into Jade.
I'm not gonna throw you away.
I don't want to do this without you.
I can't.
Uh, I don't want to spoil your date or anything.
There's just something I got to get off my chest.
Okay.
This is all really new to me, but I do know that, uh I've never felt this way about anybody before.
And, uh but it didn't feel right, you being there with someone else.
So, what I'd like to ask I mean, what I mean, what what would make me happy right now is if, um if, um, it could just be the two of us while I figure this out.
I think I can handle that.
That's great.
Um I'll, uh I'll let you get back to Brad.
Chad.
Ch Chad.
Yeah.
He's not here.
No? No.
I couldn't wait for the night to be over.
Unless, of course, it isn't.
Hi.
It's me.
- How'd it go? - It didn't.
Donor didn't work out, so we're back to square one.
I'm so sorry.
How are you? I don't want to talk about it.
I, uh, called about the band.
Yeah.
I don't want to give up on it.
You sure? Yeah, well, aside from everything that's happened between us, we're friends.
And we don't need to replace Avery.
We can't.
We can do it ourselves.
Just the two of us? A duo? Well, I'd say the music we make is pretty special.
Can't argue with that.
Good.
I'll talk to you tomorrow.
All right.
I'm sorry we fought.
I really appreciate how seriously you take your work.
That's why you're so good with Deacon.
And I shouldn't have asked you to bend the rules for us.
Thank you.
And I'm really sorry, too.
It has been a long, stressful day.
For all of us.
Yeah.
Can I, uh, give you a ride home? Um, my car is here.
Gunnar dropped it off for me.
Oh.
But I'll meet you at your place.
Yeah.
Hey, uh, your mom's getting the car, so you just make sure you got everything, okay? Okay.
You okay? This really isn't fair.
I know it's been a while since you and I have And I'm grateful.
I really, truly am.
I mean, you quit drinking so long ago.
Why is this happening now? I don't know, sweetie.
I'm just real sorry that you got to go through it.
And if I've offended you in some way, I'd really love to clear that up right now.
'Cause I really need you.
Please tell me that you're not gonna die.
Baby, I can't.
I I'm sorry, baby.
I can't.
'Cause there's a man and a little girl who are really looking to me to be strong for them.
So I'm asking if you could please, please show me the way so I can be strong and not feel so alone.
