NCIS Los Angeles s05e20 Episode Script

Windfall

Thanks, man.
Yeah.
You're welcome.
Don't move.
Drive.
What's this about? Tell us where the money is.
I-I don't know what you're talking about.
Get off the main street.
Turn here.
I'll ask again.
Where did you put the money? Deeks, what are you doing? I'm straightening her Straightening? Yeah.
She's late.
Uh, the 405's probably jammed.
The 405 is always jammed-- it's L.
A.
You talk to her? Yeah.
No, I called her to say hi.
Mm-hmm.
How'd she sound? You know, irritated and annoyed.
Well, what do you expect? She was talking to you.
Sounds like she's back to me.
She is.
- Hey! - Kensi! Hey.
Hey.
Oh, I got you a coffee.
Sorry.
A double espresso with almond milk and two packets of You already got a coffee.
I do.
Thanks.
How are you? Good.
Yeah? Really good.
You look good.
I mean that you you seem good by the way that you look.
That's because I am good.
Good.
- Good.
Good.
Kensi, looking good.
Back just in time.
We've got a case, guys.
Welcome back.
Thanks.
Welcome back.
Yeah.
Hey, Nell.
Kens.
And here's your welcome home prize.
Nell, why don't we tell her what she's won.
Adrian Davis was a contractor - and former Marine in Iraq.
- He later set up a security company with his partner, Gabriel Stanfill.
They had some major contracts, and Adrian was their point person in Baghdad.
And like some of the less reputable contractors, embezzled from the restoration funds.
Their government still can't account for billions.
And Davis was caught trying to smuggle a million dollars back to the States.
For the record, that is what a million in shrink-wrapped $100 bills looks like.
Davis did seven years in Lompoc.
He was just released last week.
Last night, his car was found totaled.
No trace of Davis but there was a dead guy in the passenger seat.
His name is Areeb Sahar.
He's a known al-Qaeda sympathizer.
Ten minutes earlier, a security camera found him in the valet lot of a nearby restaurant talking to this man, Mazhar Tarik.
Tarik is also a known al-Qaeda sympathizer.
So we believe that both of these men were after the money Davis stole.
Weren't the funds confiscated when Davis was arrested? They were.
Then why go after Davis? Because they think that there's more.
A lot more.
Al-Qaeda would never put an operation like this in motion unless they thought there was something there.
So Davis gets out-- they think he's sitting on millions that he stole from them.
Vendetta and windfall-- a perfect storm.
What about, uh, Davis' partner? Stanfill? He was never charged.
He folded the contracting company after Adrian Davis was arrested.
And he currently owns a wholesale wine distributorship in L.
A.
We think he was part of this? No, they could never tie him to the embezzlement.
Uh, he's squeaky clean.
Davis is single.
He's got a house in the Valley.
All right.
Sam, let's check out, uh, Davis' place, huh? Let's do it.
Great.
Me and my, uh, partner over here, we'll go check out Stanfill.
Yeah, about that.
Um Hetty would like to speak with you both first.
She wants to Wh Okay.
I'd like to join everyone here in welcoming you home.
Thank you.
At first, I want you to stay back.
Get your bearings.
You've been through a lot.
Um s-stay back where? Why? Up in Ops.
Ops? W I mean, Hetty, do you do you really think Oh, yes, I do.
Okay, well, partner, I guess you're on your own again.
Well, not exactly.
Ms.
Jones has worked with Mr.
Deeks in your absence.
She's presented herself admirably.
So let's get to work.
Hey.
Hey.
You know this wasn't my idea, right? I mean, this isn't what I wanted.
Not like this.
I know that.
Okay, so we're good? Yeah.
No, we're good.
Agents.
What can I do for you? We'd like to talk to you about Adrian Davis.
There's nothing to talk about.
Um Claire, would you just give me a second? Mm-hmm.
Thanks.
I told the investigators seven years ago I cut off all communication with him when he was arrested.
Right.
But you served with him.
You were his partner and his friend.
And he betrayed me.
Our company was taking off.
After Adrian was caught, our reputation was ruined.
His greed cost us the company.
I'm lucky.
I got a second chance.
Mm-hmm.
This place is nice.
And starting a business like this takes capital, right? Like, lots of capital.
Are you insinuating something? Because if you are, they confiscated every penny he stole.
Did they? I had nothing to do with it then.
I've got nothing to do with it now.
We're done here.
Yeah.
I just want to take a look around your warehouse.
Not a chance.
I cooperated with the Feds.
They didn't find anything.
So what's the harm? I'm running a business here.
We've got a tight schedule.
I don't want my workers distracted.
We could just get a warrant.
Yeah? I'd bet you couldn't.
How do you think Kensi and Eric are gonna do together? They get along.
Uh-huh.
Like a armadillo in Texas gets along with a truck on the freeway? Some of 'em may.
Yeah.
Here we go, G! Gun! That's one "little friend" I didn't want to say hello to.
What you doing? Well, um, Adrian Davis is a security contractor, so I figured he would have security cameras in his house.
Mm.
This, uh This one's got a pretty good shot at one of the shooters.
Oh.
So you're running Facial Rec.
Yeah.
What would you like me to do? I don't know, really.
Well, Hetty said I was supposed to be helping, so there's got to be something for me to do.
Uh, well, I got a pretty big knot in my shoulder right now.
I'm just kidding, of course.
I'd never ask you to do anything like that.
Even though it would be helping.
Oh, really? So Nell would be massaging you right now? Uh, no, because she'd be busy actually doing something.
What would she be doing, Eric? Remotely accessing Davis' computer, mirroring the hard drive and initiating an SSH P3 protocol for a complete sweep.
Which shoulder? Righty.
Whoa, we got a hit.
I'll call Callen.
Okay.
All right, thanks, Eric.
Well, Davis' security cams caught one of the guys.
Facial Rec has ID'd him as Alberto Jimenez.
Cotolo Cartel.
Ah.
Al-Qaeda's hired Cotolo muscle before.
Mm-hmm.
I'll hit up one of my informants.
You get anything from Stanfill? Well, we won't be getting a Christmas card.
Threatened a warrant, he shut us down.
But that's when the little pixie had her little spidey-senses and they got all tingly.
He claimed his company was doing well before Adrian got caught.
So I had Eric check up on a few thing.
And that wasn't the case.
Quite the opposite.
They were struggling to stay afloat.
Three months after Stanfill closed the security business and opened the wine company, he was in the black, big time.
Stanfill might be storing more than wine.
He's right that we don't have enough for a warrant.
But that doesn't mean we can't take a little look around his warehouse.
Did I miss something? Oh, yeah.
Just the time that Sam went undercover for an entire year as a somnambulist.
You know, one of those wine guys.
Sommelier, Deeks.
A somnambulist is a sleepwalker.
Kind of like what you do on the job.
I know you say these things out of love.
Ha! Yeah.
Somnambulist.
Like that giant clown on top of the liquor store in the Valley.
It is absolutely nothing like that giant clown.
What's different? A wine bottle is elegant.
A clown is, you know, a clown.
Oh, that's right, you don't like clowns, do you? That's not the point I was trying to make.
But for the record, no, I do not like clowns.
Which is something you already know.
It's nothing to be ashamed of, Sam.
A lot of people are afraid of clowns.
It's kind of a childhood, uh, trauma thing.
I am not afraid of clowns.
What I am afraid of is you coming off as one when we talk to Stanfill.
Uh-huh.
So how about this: I'm an oenophile, you're the money.
I'm the money.
You're a man of many assets, few words.
Okay? But I am the money.
Yeah, but few words.
All right.
Okay.
I was very impressed with your Cab.
Well integrated tannin, lively acidity.
The subtlety of the oak-- that was a surprise.
That was intentional.
Notes of blackcurrant, tobacco Figs and eucalyptus.
You know what, I didn't get the figs.
No? Hm.
But you know what, I really enjoyed the chardonnay as well.
I got to say, I think we'd be a good fit for your winery.
You're kind of new to the business.
Which is why we fight for quality product whenever we can get our hands on it.
Who else have you met with? Paladette and Mestros.
Good companies.
We've got a wider reach.
My sales reps are on the doorstep of anybody daydreaming about opening a new restaurant or store.
That's what I like to hear.
Mm.
Appreciate your time, Mr.
Stanfill.
We want your business.
I'll be in touch.
Thank you.
Take care.
Thanks.
Unbelievable.
He didn't get the figs.
This place is enormous.
You thinking what I'm thinking? Yeah.
It's the perfect place to hide cash in plain sight.
You remember what a million dollars looked like? The size of a case of wine.
Yeah.
Lot of wine.
See, the thing about CIs is it's always about being in control.
Little Dip understands I'm the only thing standing between him and prison.
Essentially, - it's just about respect.
- Mm.
Want to take some notes? I'll try.
Yo, Little Dip.
Slow your roll, Little Dip.
Who's the homegirl? She's fine.
Yeah, finer than you'll ever be with.
Ooh, snap.
Ooh, you got some fire, girl.
Nice ink.
Carson 16 your crew? Es mi barrio.
Vatos Locos.
Oh, homegirl's got the words.
Evidently.
Hey, yo, Deeks, you get a haircut? Yeah, I got a little trim.
Thanks for noticing.
It's too flat.
Oh.
Yeah, the beauty parlor could hook you up with some curlers, man.
I got mad height, son.
You do have mad height.
This is style by pillow.
So I don't really put a lot of work into it.
But yours, yeah, it looks really good.
This right here? This is all natural, this volume.
You know what I'm saying? It makes the ladies go cray cray for Little Dip.
Cray cray.
Focus up, Little Dip.
Cotolos been working with al-Qaeda.
Yo, I don't get involved in that cartel-terrorist deal, so No, we're not asking you to get involved, we just a location.
Y-Yo, I don't know, all right? Yo, Cotolos don't play.
They sent homeboy's head to his family in a gift box.
Aw.
Does that scare you, Little Dip? Sounds scared.
'Cause my partner here, you know, he says you're pretty slick.
Super slick.
Unless you don't think you can handle it.
This takes pretty big cojones, Little Dip, I don't know if this is for you.
Yeah, I got those.
Yo, I ain't even makin' no promises.
Okay.
Well, see what you can do.
Yeah.
Check you later, ma.
Mmm.
Damn.
Would I be correct in thinking you believe Kensi needs to be assessed before sending her back into action? You would.
She needs to hit the ground running.
Shouldn't spend too much time thinking about it.
My team, my call.
This wouldn't be about Agent Mansfield, would it? That's absurd.
Is it? You put him back in the field after the Sarajevo debacle in '95 Careful, Owen.
and he froze.
Cost his partner his life.
Do not presume to know me.
Never.
But I'm aware of the affection you have for those under your charge.
For some they're just history.
For me they're names and faces.
Well, two of your current agents, Deeks and Blye, have a history, Henrietta.
And you know what I'm talking about.
More than a work relationship.
to have these talks, Owen.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll get back to work.
You're tapping.
I tap and I hum when I'm bored.
I also whistle and click my tongue.
Please don't.
Don't.
Can you I asked you You can stop this pain.
All you got to do is tell Hetty that putting me in OPS was a terrible idea.
Yes.
No No, you're not supposed to sound so excited about thi No.
No, no, no, no, no, listen.
Remember how Stanfill said that he hadn't spoken to Adrian Davis since he was arrested? Yeah.
Well, I ran a search for phone calls made from the pay phones from where he was incarcerated.
That's the number for Stanfill Wine Distributors.
It was made a week before Adrian Davis was released.
Okay, but there are hundreds of inmates in the prison.
It could have been anybody.
Which is why I accessed the prison security camera footage.
That's Adrian Davis.
Uh-huh.
And the time code from the prison security camera matches the date and time of the call to Stanfill Wines.
Stanfill lied to us.
The GPS on his cell says that he's at home.
I'll call Callen.
Federal agents.
Stanfill.
Sam, bullet holes.
Got spent casings.
G.
So much for staying in touch.
$10,000 in hundred dollar bills.
Over 300 grand in the safe.
Packaged just like the ones stolen from Iraq.
Well, gives a whole new meaning to "money laundering.
" The shell casings look like they match the ones at Adrian Davis' place.
So after killing Stanfill, Tarik and his cartel friends find the safe, but can't open it.
So they blow it off, 'cause they know it can't hold anywhere near the millions they're looking for.
Which is obviously somewhere else.
Where? Mr.
Stanfill told me not to answer any questions about the warehouse operation without his say-so.
Well, that's gonna be a challenge.
Mr.
Stanfill was murdered today.
What? Harold, look, as the warehouse manager, you have two choices.
Either you can be charged with obstruction of a federal investigation, or you can cooperate with us.
It's a time-sensitive offer, Harold.
He wouldn't hide any money on the floor.
Why not? 'Cause there's no permanent stock here.
All these cases are gonna ship to, uh, restaurants and stores.
Couple of weeks, they'll all be gone and replaced with new ones.
Was Stanfill a wine collector himself? He was.
Where did he keep his private stock? Yeah, yeah, over here.
I'll show you.
Gave some of them to friends once in a while.
Most he kept for himself.
The purchase orders for the South Pasadena delivery are ready at Dock Eight.
Decaf, Mr.
Beale? Oh! Uh.
I'm sorry.
Feeling a little, uh, agitated this morning.
Trying to ease up on the caffeine.
It doesn't seem to be doing much for your nerves.
Yeah, well How are things up in Ops? Oh, good.
Really good.
Excellent, in fact.
You know, a few speed bumps, but every case has its bumps.
And, uh how are Ms.
Blye's, uh, shock absorbers in your estimation? Pretty good.
Yeah.
They're not not I wouldn't say high-impact motocross good, but, you know, maybe more like Buick good.
You know, smooth, but not not taking any sharp corners these day This analogy's not really working, is it? Uh-uh, not so much.
Kensi is a great agent.
Ah.
Well, I know that, Mr.
Beale.
Yeah, so-so it would follow that, um that she'd have greater success, uh agenting.
Ms.
Blye's technical prowess may leave something to be desired, but your deductive skills are in fine form.
She's bored and restless, Hetty.
And I don't blame her.
But emotionally? Solid as a rock as far as I can tell.
Thank you.
Whoa! Uh-oh.
Excuse me.
This one's about half as light as the rest of them.
Well, a million dollars should be half as light as 12 bottles of wine.
That's not even close to a million.
What does F-81 mean? Our boy Harold should know what that means.
I have no idea what that means.
That's not for delivery.
That's for pickup.
By who? Well, I have no idea.
Where is it going? Damned if I know.
You're the warehouse manager, and you don't know who's picking it up or where it's going? Nope.
Never have.
There have been others? Mr.
Stanfill marks up a box, and when it's ready, I text a number, and some woman comes by and picks it up.
And you don't know where it's going? Nope.
How often did this happen? Maybe once a month, since he started the company.
Once a month? And you don't find that the slightest bit unusual? Nope.
I think it's time to send another text.
Number's a burn phone just like we thought.
Well, unfortunately, that means we have to keep staring at this blip, which, after careful analysis, I've determined is not moving.
Well, sometimes that's part of the job in here.
Not very exciting.
That's actually okay, you know.
I've spent some many more hours on stakeouts.
And you are so much less irritating than spending time with Deeks in a car.
Thanks.
I think.
So, how long ago did that warehouse manager sent the text? Uh, 92 minutes and 30 seconds.
Mm.
You know what they say about a watched pot.
Yeah.
Eventually, it's got to boil.
Showtime, guys.
The GPS in the case of wine says it's on the move.
This your house? It's Mr.
Foster's.
I work for him.
Mr.
Foster home? Of course.
We need to speak with him.
Please come in.
Mr.
Foster, there are some people here to see you.
What can I do for you? Mr.
Foster, you received a box of money every month from Gabriel Stanfill's company, and you've never heard of him? No idea who that is.
How do you pay your bills? My caregiver.
From your account? That's right.
Something tells me your V.
A.
benefits aren't gonna match those monthly balances.
This morning, Gabriel Stanfill was killed by cartel muscle hired by al-Qaeda.
And now, they're after Adrian Davis.
Someone you claim you've never heard of.
If you don't help us, Brian, we might not be able to save Adrian.
Thank you so much.
We, uh, really appreciate it.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
What'd you get? Not a lot.
It's, uh, his mother's house.
When she passed away, Bethany moved in.
She's his nurse and caregiver.
She picks up a box once a month.
She doesn't know what's in it or who Stanfill and Davis are.
It's not much of a story, but they're on the same page.
So what now? Why don't you take her into interrogation? Guys? Those are at least an 11.
Men's 11.
Not Foster's.
Cover the back.
Nell, stay here.
Damn it! - Got you! - Deeks, what are you doing? Huh? Ah.
You know, catching bad guys.
Oh, it was like the Wild West in Bagdad.
I mean, there were guys taking out stacks of hundreds in wheelbarrows.
And it was just too much to resist, huh? Why, I did at first, but the other contractors pushed me.
Said we deserved it, putting ourselves at risk.
Everyone was doing it? Yeah, well, it doesn't make it right.
Uh, and-and I told 'em.
I said I-I wasn't going down that rabbit hole.
Then my contracts got cancelled.
I was underbid on every one of them.
They were sending you a message.
Gabe wanted to know what was going on, you know, so, we talked about it.
And about Brian.
You and Stanfill served with Foster? Yeah.
What happened? We were, uh-- I don't know-- about 20 klicks out of Ramadi.
Some of the trucks are, uh are armor-plated, but, uh, not ours.
Some kid playing with what looked like a remote control toy car off the side of the road.
Hmm.
They tell you to suspect everything.
Just didn't even have time to think about it really, but you always wonder.
You know, Gabe and me-- we did a couple of days in a med unit, walked away with a few bruises.
Brian-- you know, he V.
A.
wasn't doing right by him? Best they could, you know.
I don't I don't fault those guys.
He had the basics.
But you and Stanfill wanted him to have more than the basics? Seemed like the right call at the time.
How much did you take out of Baghdad for him? What they caught me with, and, uh, a little more I managed to get out before.
What's a little bit more? I don't know.
A few hundred thousand.
You were in Iraq for four years, Adrian.
Four years.
That's all you managed to get out? Like I said, I wasn't comfortable doing it in the first place.
Hey.
Hey, Nell.
How's it going out there? Uh it's good.
It's interesting.
It's kind of challenging.
How's it going in here? Oh, you know, it's my reward for being beaten and chained in a cave with my ex-fiancé.
Yeah.
Kens, you know when you you really want something, and you get it, but somehow, it's not the way that you wanted it at all? I I want to be aa agent.
I do.
But not like this.
I get it.
Oh, come on! What? What's wrong? The freaking firewall's jamming me up.
You sure? I beg you.
Okay.
What's up? Brian Foster's personal financial records were encrypted by Monarca Securities.
They knew what they were doing.
Well, game on.
There you go, Beale.
And we're in.
Jukebox? I think you mean jackpot.
No, look here.
Seven years ago, Brian Foster bought a jukebox bar in the Valley.
That's after he was injured in Iraq.
That's odd.
That rare Ceylon tea we got you for your birthday.
Mm.
Is that it? It is.
Is it everything you asked for and more? How is it? Oh, just fine.
Good to hear.
But I think, Mr.
Deeks, you have something else on your mind.
I want my partner back.
I need her back, and it's been five months.
And she's right upstairs.
And you shall have her back.
Mm-hmm.
When exactly? When I determine that her mind is sound enough to make decisions that will directly affect the national security of this county.
Right.
I don't want to question your judgment.
And yet, you are.
Okay, last question then.
Um honestly, is there more to this than what Kensi went through in Afghanistan? I don't know, Mr.
Deeks.
Is there? It's the jukebox guy.
Uh, does maintenance, picks up the coinage.
He's your jukebox guy? Yeah.
How often do you see him? Uh, I never see him.
He comes in once a month, but it's always after we've, uh, closed and I've locked up.
He's got his own key.
Seriously, can I get another drink? Ugh.
Natives are getting restless.
Excuse me.
If you owned a million-dollar wine warehouse, would you moonlight as a jukebox repairman? No, I would not.
Hmm.
Insides should be full of 45s, right? Yeah.
Except this one doesn't play 45s.
It's been retrofitted for Mp3s.
Should be empty inside.
Huh.
Empty.
Hold it.
Not quite empty.
Money was here.
Yeah.
Stanfill moved it.
You're never getting that money, Adrian.
The minute you walk out that door, you will be under constant surveillance.
If al-Qaeda gets their hands on that money, it could tip the balance in Iraq.
You're a Marine, Adrian.
You made a pledge to serve this country.
Or did you conveniently forget that? It was 42.
$42 million? Look, we know you and Stanfill hid the money at the bar you bought for Foster.
But he moved it.
What? I-I was still in lockup.
He never told me.
No, that's-that's the truth.
There are al-Qaeda operatives hunting for you, willing to kill you for the money.
And you have no idea where it is? You sure about that, Adrian? You've always been a pretty good human lie detector.
Thanks to my time spent with you, Owen.
Ugh! Davis' lawyer for the fifth time today.
We have every right to hold him.
Even if the valet's death was self-defense, he still left the scene.
That's true.
But given his time served and motive to help his comrade, I'm tempted to release him on his own recognizance, at least until all of this gets worked out.
Always is.
Our money you stole will go a long way to helping our cause.
Wait.
You might want to think about this.
Federal agents! Tarik? Game's over.
On your knees.
See, you got to stay in control, Deeks.
Is that so? Mm.
Yeah, 'cause it's all about respect.
Okay.
Well played.
Well played.
Looks just like the real deal.
Well, thanks to our assistant director, some of it is.
Question is, where's the real money? Surprised how fast they found me.
Well, once we put the word out to our man Little Dip about where you'd be released, we knew it was only a matter of time before they had eyes on you.
You put yourself at risk to help us.
That's gonna go a long way.
Guys? Found this in Stanfill's desk.
Has "For Adrian" written on the label.
There was a rolled-up hundred dollar bill with a note inside.
Read that.
"If you're reading this, I'm gone.
Enjoy the Pinot.
" Now, at first, it didn't make sense to me.
This isn't a Pinot.
It's a Merlot.
And you're smiling why? That's a Pinot.
Hidden in plain sight.
It was the D.
O.
J.
's decision, Henrietta.
Well, I think that's an appropriate ending.
I do, too.
Good night, Owen.
Good night.
Due to Adrian Davis' cooperation, the D.
O.
J.
has decided to consider his punishment time served.
That's great.
Yeah.
Would you consider, um doing the same for me? Keeping you here wasn't meant as punishment, Ms.
Blye.
I know.
The truth is, I don't know if you're ready.
That being said, I don't know that keeping you here will provide revelations.
We won't know, will we until you're back out there? Your friends have missed you dearly.
Go.
- You seem calmer, Eric.
- Oh, I am.
Now that things are back to normal in the department.
Hey.
Hi.
We haven't a lot of time to chat since you've been back.
I know.
It's gonna change.
You mean, it's gonna change? Does that mean that? Wait a minute.
Are you back? Sure looks like it.
That's good news.
I was getting a little worried, because, uh, pretty sure Nell was falling in love with me.
Aah! God! And there she is.
Here I am.
It's good to be back.
It's good to have you back.
