Pieces of Her (2022) s01e02 Episode Script

Episode 2

1 911, what is your emergency? Andy, don't talk to them.
[Andy.]
Who? The police.
That was something, what your mom did.
- [man.]
He doesn't want your money.
- [Laura.]
Paula Kunde [both grunting.]
[Laura.]
Give me his phone.
His car will be around here.
You're gonna drive to Carrollton.
There's a storage place, Get-Em-Go.
I have a car there.
Take it and head north, all the way to Maine.
Find a motel in Camden and just stay there.
[theme music playing.]
[Laura.]
I'm cold.
Is it snowing? - Oh, he's coming back.
He's coming back.
- [sirens wailing.]
[Andy grunting.]
[gasps.]
Holy shit! ["Miki Dora" playing.]
Sippin' on my beer I come upon a vision When Mary comes [music stops.]
[sighs.]
$17.
39.
I only need one of these.
Oh, right.
[Andy breathing heavily.]
- Miss, your change.
- Oh.
[coins clatter.]
Fuck.
["Can't You See" playing.]
I'm gonna take a freight train Down at the station, Lord I don't care where it goes Gonna climb a mountain The highest mountain Excuse me? Uh, you know how to get to Get-Em-Go? "Get-Em" what? Never mind.
[woman on radio.]
Shepard needs a progressive democrat that cares about issues like climate change without alienating centrist voters who may be skeptical about a female candidate [man on radio.]
Mm.
Are we still having that conversation? [woman.]
Shepard doesn't carry the same baggage Hillary Clinton did.
But her choice could tip the scales one way or the other.
[man.]
And speaking of baggage, doesn't Jasper Queller have more than his share? Maybe, but he does well with female voters.
[indistinct conversation.]
[sighs.]
[Laura whimpering.]
- [man.]
Paula was right about you.
- Paula Koontz [sighs.]
[Shooltz.]
Thanks for talking with us, Ms.
Oliver.
Oh, no, of course.
We were hoping to speak with your daughter as well.
Uh, Andy's gone up to see friends in Atlanta.
- She's a bit, um overwhelmed by all this.
- [Wilson.]
Mm.
You had a bit of a scare yourself last night.
I understand the police were called to the house? [groans.]
Yeah, I feel terrible about this.
Um I'm pretty keyed up.
And, uh, I woke up in the middle of the night.
Thought I saw someone outside.
By the time the police got here, no one was there.
- They were very nice about it.
- Your text said that the man was armed.
If you didn't see anyone, how did you No, I know.
I guess I'm just seeing guns everywhere.
It's understandable after what you went through.
[sighs.]
Could you walk us through what happened yesterday? Sure, it's a little blurry, but, um Andrea and I went for lunch.
We were talking and, um Betsy and her daughter came over.
And, uh all of a sudden, there were, there were gunshots.
And I remember seeing a lot of blood.
And, uh that young man.
[Wilson.]
It's Jonah Helsinger.
[Laura.]
He was so focused on Andy.
I remember thinking, "God, he's gonna kill her.
" And I, I just reacted.
I would call it an unusual reaction.
There was a knife lodged in your hand.
Yeah, well, I I do have an old injury, which, um Which means there's not much feeling there, but, yeah.
[Wilson.]
Most of the other people in the diner were hiding under tables, but not you.
Do you have children, Detective Wilson? No, I don't.
If someone threatens your child, you do anything to protect them.
Something just kicks in.
I think that's all we need.
[Laura exhales, grunts.]
You are a very brave woman.
[Wilson.]
I guess we never really know what we're capable of.
I guess not.
- Are those your keys? - Sorry? Your car is still at the diner, right? Yeah.
Happy to have a couple of officers drop it off.
You shouldn't be driving right now.
- That'd be wonderful, thank you.
- All right.
[crowd chattering indistinctly.]
You know, um, I hate to bother my neighbors with all this commotion.
Do you think you could ask the reporters to move farther down the block? No problem.
[phone dialing.]
[cell phone ringing.]
Hey.
Is Andy with you? - [Laura.]
She's fine.
- She never showed up.
Figured she crashed out.
She's, uh some place safe.
"Some place safe"? Can you please come over? - What's going on? - As soon as you can.
Please? I'm on my way.
Hi.
I, uh, sent something to the printer? [librarian.]
That'll be $2, dear.
"The way life should be.
" What? Maine.
That's the State slogan.
I've heard it's beautiful this time of year.
Sure beats this humidity, I'll tell ya.
[beeps.]
What the [grunts.]
Oh, my God.
[Andy.]
Is this okay? The water okay? Mm, it's fine.
[Andy.]
Okay.
How'd you get this one, again? I was bike-riding with my mother.
And I went downhill too fast, and the thing went out from under me.
At least I come by it honestly.
What? My complete lack of physical coordination.
That's not true.
You've got volleyball.
Mr.
Chapman said I look like a drunk meerkat.
[chuckling.]
Don't make me laugh, it hurts.
[engine starts.]
[car lock chimes.]
[knock on door.]
[sighs.]
Thanks for coming.
[Gordon.]
What's going on? Where's Andy? She's, uh She's on her way to Maine.
Why? Okay, listen.
Last night a man broke into the house - What? - and tried to hurt me.
- Laura, what the hell? - Yeah, I know.
- Andy stopped him.
She - Wait.
Slow down.
What happened? And is she okay? Yeah, but it's just not safe for her to be here.
They know where I am now.
- [whispers.]
He's here.
- Who? Laura, who's here? - I'm calling 911.
- We don't have time.
What do you mean? He's supposed to meet someone outside Macon at three o'clock to get paid.
- So, if we take him there - No.
We can see who shows up and get a photo and a license plate, - then drop him at a hospital - I'm not gonna do this.
- [sighs.]
- Gordon.
Gordon, wait.
Wait.
What? What? You knew someone might come looking for me.
This was always part of the deal.
Okay, listen, Laura.
We can call the feds.
- You'll be given immunity! - No.
By that time, whoever he's meeting will be long gone.
Do you know how this looks? Think about it.
Me driving him.
Fuck.
It's just, they won't stop.
I mean, they'll go after Andy.
I tried.
Oh, my God.
I fucking tried so hard to keep both of you out of this.
I can't just sit here and do nothing, you know? I don't want Andy having to look over her shoulder the rest of her life.
[inhales.]
[classical piano music playing.]
[music stops.]
We're not married anymore.
[music resumes.]
[indistinct chatter on TV.]
Can I help you? I need a room.
Yeah, $39.
99 for a standard and $45.
99 for a river view.
I'll take one facing the parking lot.
Sign here.
["Marcy's Song" playing.]
Well she's, she's just a picture Who lives, lives on my wall Well she's, she's just a picture And the reason, reason, reason It is so small With a smile so inviting And a body so tall Well she's, she's just a picture Just a picture [man grunting.]
- Oh, God.
- What's happening? - What's happening? - He's having a seizure.
- Jesus.
How bad is it? - I don't know.
- [Gordon.]
Is he breathing? - [Laura.]
I don't know! Hey.
Hey.
Hey.
[man continues grunting.]
We need to find a hospital.
[Laura.]
Oh, God.
[man coughs.]
Hey.
Hey, listen to me.
I need the number of the man who sent you.
He's gonna kill you.
[exhales.]
[Laura.]
Oh, no.
[Laura breathing heavily.]
Fuck! Why didn't you ever tell me how bad it was? I mean, it never made sense.
That you were still afraid after all those years.
But You think it would have made a difference? Why do they want to hurt you? Not they.
Just one person.
I have to find a way to reach him.
To make this stop.
We gotta get going, Laura.
I'll drive you to Pembroke.
Catch a cab from there.
You can't help me put him in the ground.
Oh, Gordon.
This never happened.
[girl.]
No one ever stops him.
I'm afraid of him.
He'll take her from me.
He takes everything.
[inaudible conversation.]
- Oh, Charlie.
- [Charlie.]
Hi.
- Ms.
Oliver, a few questions? - No comment.
- It won't take long.
- Hey! Hey.
Hey.
Back off.
- Okay.
- Okay.
[dog barking.]
Let's get you inside.
[groans.]
Oh, I need some air.
You want to sit with me? [groans.]
How long were you waiting? About an hour and a half.
I saw your car, but nobody's answering the door.
Yeah, I had physical therapy.
Gordon drove me.
Gordon.
- You two back together? - [chuckles.]
No.
Nothing like that.
- You'd tell me? - Of course.
I was down in The Keys.
I came straight back when I saw the news.
I know.
It just happened.
I didn't expect it to become this thing.
[Charlie sighs.]
You know, I don't like the idea of losing you.
I'm still here.
Where's Andy? Visiting friends.
You know, you shouldn't be alone.
If you want to get away from all of this, we can do that.
[sighs.]
Charlie.
I'm okay.
Just tired.
[exhales.]
Can we talk tomorrow? Yeah.
Okay.
I'll call you.
[Charlie.]
Yeah.
[sighs wearily.]
[grunting.]
Shit.
[man.]
You're not seeing things clearly.
And reality's complicated.
We simply have to decide how much [woman.]
How much a human life is worth.
[girl.]
No! [indistinct conversation.]
- [country music playing.]
- [indistinct conversation.]
[man.]
You guys ready for another? - What can I get you? - Uh, some fries please.
And a double vodka rocks.
- [bartender.]
Fries'll be out in a minute.
- Thanks.
[indistinct chatter on TV.]
[woman.]
You're that girl, huh? - [Andy.]
No.
- So, what was it like? - Hey, could I get those fries to go? - How'd your mom even do that, anyway? She's not my mom.
[scoffs.]
Tell me I'm crazy.
Same girl, sitting right here.
I don't know.
- Come on, plain as day.
- All right, Captain Morgan.
The girl in the photo's a lot younger, looks nothing like her.
Yeah.
Screw you.
[bartender.]
I'll get your change.
[Andy.]
Thanks.
For what? [Andy chuckles.]
Right.
It'd suck to be that girl.
To be paralyzed with fear while your mom saves your ass.
You'd drink yourself stupid.
You okay? You ever have that thing where you think you know someone, as well as you could possibly know anyone, and then, one day, it's just clear as day, you were totally fucking wrong? I felt that same way about Santa Claus.
[scoffs.]
Uh, sorry, could I have another, and whatever he's drinking? No.
I'm gonna get going.
- Thank you, though.
- Oh, come on.
Here's to Being wrong about people.
I'm Andy.
Jack.
You're from around here? Up the road a bit.
You passing through? Yeah, headed north.
Might be coming around to this place, though.
The scenery's not so bad.
Sorry.
Sorry, I, um Sometimes, I just say things.
They just come out.
You know, this is the part where you say, "That's okay, I get it.
" "I've had shitty days too.
" And, I say Right.
Sure.
That's what I say? Something like that.
Okay.
I've had a shitty day or two.
I need more.
All right.
Buddy and I had a bet going in boot camp, which one of us would win the marksman prize.
We used to bike out to the desert for practice, until one morning, I hit a rock, spin out, fuck the bike and my knee.
A month later, my unit shipped out to Iraq, and I'm pushing paper in Twentynine Palms.
Hoorah.
So, you know how to handle a gun? Teach me.
- What? - I'm serious.
Are you expecting more trouble or something? Please? No way.
Besides, it's not like I got one on me.
Well, I do.
I got it today.
I wanted to feel safe, you know? Please.
Help me out.
Now you.
Walk me through one? Square yourself off with your target.
Feet shoulder-width apart.
Just bring that right leg back slightly.
Like this? Can I? All right, relax your shoulders.
That's right.
Keep your elbows bent.
Grip it tight.
Now, all you wanna see over your front sights is your target.
And when you're ready, I want you to squeeze the trigger.
But just do it slowly, okay? [breathing evenly.]
[gunshot.]
[gasps.]
I'm ready to make a statement now.
But I need you to air the whole thing, whatever I say, no edits.
Okay.
I need it to go national.
I want everyone to see it.
How about an interview on The Today Show tomorrow morning? Okay.
[sighs.]
You know it was beginner's luck, right? Come on, I'm a natural.
[Jack.]
Mm.
I see some promise.
That's what everyone says.
It's my follow-through that needs work.
[Jack.]
Mm.
This is me.
I should head home.
Right.
Okay.
Unless, you want a lift.
I'm, uh I'm just across the road.
So Thanks for, um you know.
No problem.
Just, uh, do me a favor? Remember not to lock your elbows, huh? And the knees too.
[crying.]
- [chuckles nervously.]
- Whoa.
You okay? Yeah.
- I'll walk you back.
- Oh, no, no, no.
No, it's fine.
- You sure? - Yeah, yeah.
Good night! [breathing heavily.]
