Red Rock (2015) s01e40 Episode Script

Episode 40

That's why she's got to make a statement.
My understanding is that Rachel Reid is still reluctant to give any kind of statement, but is being brought in in the hope that she might open up once here.
I presume I don't have to tell any of you how sensitive this situation is.
Or how traumatic an experience this young girl has just been through.
All of us know just how important this interview is.
How vital it is we get Rachel's admission of a sexual relationship if we're to secure a successful prosecution.
But at no point should Rachel feel pushed or pressurised.
We want her to be able to speak openly about her experience, because Yeah but we don't wanna screw it up at the final hurdle.
Have you listened to a word I said Garda Brennan? Yes Sergeant.
Then I don't want to hear sniggering or phrases like "screwing up".
Our reputation has taken a hammering with all that's happened, so today we're on our best behaviour.
We make this station as welcoming and as comfortable as we can for Rachel.
Okay? Yes Sarge.
Sharon! Yes Sarge? I know you and Rachel Reid have had a few run-ins during this whole thing with Brian.
No, not really Sarge.
Still I think it's probably best if you keep a low profile.
We don't want to do anything that might spook her.
Yes Sarge.
Ready? Yeah.
I'm going to go open up, but if you need anything? Good luck.
I'm not saying anything about Brian.
Well good luck anyway.
We better go in, they're waiting for us.
Okay.
Well? Who's dying? Nobody Mum! Then why the urgency and the long face? It's David.
James has heard back from the DPP.
They're going to charge him? No, they've decided to not pursue his case.
This is how you deliver good news? You know for future reference, Claire, you should try and deliver it with a smile, maybe some bubbles.
We should call David, let him know the news.
No, actually that should come from David's own solicitor, Declan.
The little man on the bicycle? Yes Mum, Declan, who happens to be a first rate solicitor.
No, Claire, first rate solicitors own BMWs, not BMXs.
Yeah, anyway, that's not why we called you in.
It's Michael, we need to think about how he's going to take the news.
I know he's going to be happy for David but still, this won't be an easy day for him.
Okay, I'll have a word.
Thanks.
I'm Angela, Rachel, we met when I called to your house.
You're recording this? Yes, just so we have a clear record of everything that is said.
Nobody told me this was going to be recorded.
It's just routine procedure, absolutely normal.
We do this in all interviews.
And you can ask us to turn it off at any time if you feel uncomfortable, okay? Okay.
Right.
Could you tell us a little about your relationship with Mr.
McGonigle? Brian, will he hear this? You don't have to say anything you're uncomfortable with and we can always stop the recording at any time.
Perhaps you could start by explaining how you first met him? You know.
Just for your statement.
His daughter is my best friend.
Or at least she used to be.
BUZZER RINGING Alright, I'm coming.
You shouldn't be here.
I need to see McKay.
No, you can't, you're not supposed to here.
I'm not leaving.
I'm not leaving until I see McKay.
Arrest me if you want, but I'm not going.
Get the boss.
Don't worry, no hard feelings.
What? I know you just did what you thought was right, that's okay, I forgive you.
Hey, if you want to stay here, you'll keep your mouth shut.
Listen to Judas, watch him Sean, he stabbed Sharon in the back.
Stabbed me in the back, he'll stab you in the back too.
You can't be here, you have to leave now.
Go.
Look, I just want five minutes and that's all.
Out! Come on five minutes, you owe me that.
Look, in the time we're standing here arguing it'll all be done.
And you don't want me here kicking off, causing a hoo-ha in the station.
Take him straight to my office, nowhere else.
Make sure Rachel Reid comes nowhere near my office, not while he's here.
And call Dunedin, tell them I want them to send someone over here to pick him up.
And get me Nikki.
So you must have been round at the McGonigle's house quite a lot, I suppose.
KNOCK ON THE DOOR Everything okay? Yeah, yeah fine.
Shall we continue? Can I have a break now? Let's keep going for a little while longer and then we'll break.
Let's get back to you visiting the McGonigle's house, when you were there, were you often on you own with Mr.
McGonigle? I already told you, he didn't do anything wrong.
I've asked Nikki to join us as a witness.
What is it you want Brian? Look, I just wanted you to hear my side.
Then you'd understand what happened.
I'm not interested.
Maybe you could put a word in for me.
Absolutely not.
I'm the victim here.
You don't know what Rachel is like, I know she looks all innocent.
But she's not, she is She is extremely manipulative, she's dangerous.
He was kind, he listened to me, that's all, he was really nice.
He listened for a reason.
I got a really bad feeling about her from the beginning.
Something about her wasn't right.
Whatever you're thinking, he's not a bad person.
I could tell you what I'm thinking if that would help? But I thought poor kid, I mean she's lost her mother.
I'm sure Liam's doing his best, but it was obvious that she wasn't right.
I think perhaps you were feeling lonely when you first met Mr.
McGonigle.
You'd just lost your mum, you needed someone to help you out.
Is that fair, tell me if it isn't, I don't mind.
She latched on to me.
It made me really uncomfortable.
Did he buy you presents? Not really no, more like he'd take me places.
He'd listen to me and talk to me, mostly he just made time for me.
That was the nicest part, he understood me.
I didn't want her hanging out with Mel, but Jules said, let them be, they'll fall out eventually, you know what teenage girls are like.
Did he ever offer you alcohol? You're nodding, you mean yes? Yes.
I mean you had no idea what she was going to do next.
She just seemed completely lost.
Did Mr.
McGonigle ever touch you? He hugged me when I was feeling sad.
Yeah, I should've, I should have turned her away.
Were there any times when it went further than that? But I felt sorry for her, that'll teach me to be nice.
I'm sorry to have to ask you this Rachel.
Did you have sex with him? You do know that anything you say here will be in confidence? Yeah, I know.
Can I have a break now? Rachel, did Mr.
McGonigle have sex with you? No, he never did anything like that.
They need the truth, Rachel.
No, listen.
I thought I was allowed a break.
Just wondering if you wanted some refreshment Liam? Oh, thank you.
No thanks.
Can you talk, though for a minute? On our own? Do you smoke? God no, never cool enough to pull that off.
You know the way you said how you found me? I was there, yes.
I wanted to ask Did I puke on you? Well it wouldn't have mattered if you did.
That means I did, Jesus.
Well If you're feeling embarrassed you don't need to be.
I'm sorry.
For what? Everything.
Don't be.
Is it true, was he leaving me? Was he leaving me to die? I don't mind, you can tell me.
You're okay, it's alright.
He said he loved me, he said I was his special girl.
Shhhh.
That doesn't matter, you don't need him, okay? What are you two hatching in here? Just trying to take Michael out on the tear.
Absolutely, well deserved.
You should go Michael, do you good.
Yeah maybe I will then.
Can you give me a minute with your brother, please? Yeah, sure.
What have I done now? Nothing.
The DPP have made a decision about David's with-holding information charge.
They're not proceeding with it.
Oh, Michael, I know you must think you're carrying the burden alone.
No, it's it's okay Mum.
But you're not alone.
I'm here, we're all here.
It's okay, I'm happy for him, really.
There's no point in two of us being punished.
I won't forget this darling.
Ever.
Does he know yet? Not yet.
You're not going to believe what just happened! Look, I never laid a finger on her, not once.
Not even that time in the car when she lunged at me.
I could've, I could have kissed her but I didn't, I pushed her away.
Despite all the trouble she caused, I never, I never tried to hurt her.
But you left her to die.
Are you okay? Come on in, Rachel.
Thanks Sharon.
Can she stay? Of course, if you'd like that.
No, no, that's wrong, I didn't.
Where where did you hear that? We have the recording of the 999 call you made.
Come on you are a You were a policeman.
Before we took a break we were talking about whether your relationship with Mr.
McGonigle ever became sexual.
Are you comfortable that we continue to talk about that? Yes I did, I made the phone call, but then Sharon showed up, she started attacking me.
Okay, stop, stop, stop, stop No no no! I never tried to hurt her! On my kids lives, I never tried.
Nikki would you excuse us please? I'd like to have a private moment with Brian.
So you were saying your relationship with Brian had never been sexual in nature, is that right? Just tell the truth darling.
Come on.
Can you say it out loud for me? No, what I said before wasn't true.
Look, how many years have we worked together? The relationship between me and Mr.
McGonigle was sexual.
Doesn't that count for anything? No.
Put him in the cells and leave him there until the car from Dunedin comes to pick him up.
David I was thinking, now that you're not being charged, it might be a good time to go visit Simon.
In Australia? Unless he's moved yes, Australia.
I thought you didn't want me going.
Not with Katie Kiely I didn't.
But now might be a good time to get away from here, and the Kielys and everything.
Mum, I'm not seeing Katie any more.
Still it would be nice to put a couple of continents between you both.
And it might good time to give your brother a little space.
He seemed cool with me getting off.
All the same.
Yeah, okay, let's do it.
Good boy.
I've just had a call from Dunedin.
Brian McGonigle has been charged with the defilement of a minor.
I know this has been tough on everyone.
Something like this can really tear a station apart.
It's a shock for all of us, someone we trusted has betrayed us.
But I promise you that coming through this will make us stronger as a group.
A big thank you from me for all the hard work.
Woah! Remember that this is a police station.
Which means take your empties home and remember there are cameras everywhere so behave yourselves.
What's up, Westlife? Nothing, something in my eye.
And I thought you were all hard.
Only where it counts.
You sure you don't mind locking up? Of course not.
See you tomorrow.
Yeah.
You must be pleased with the way it all ended? I'm just pleased it's over.
Is it true you punched McGonigle? No.
Well that's what they're all saying.
That's how rumours start.
Oh my God you're lying, you did punch him! No, I didn't.
You just did your "tell", the thing you do when you're lying.
What tell? I don't have a tell.
I'm hardly going to say what it is and give away my super-power.
I don't have a tell.
Okay.
CHEERING Go on.
Just stick it up that end.
That's what he says to all the girls! Nearly, nearly, go on, you can do it.
You can do it baby.
Cheers! Well done everyone!! Do you want another one? Actually, no I'm going to have to head home.
I hate to be a party-pooper but I've just remembered I've got my brother's kids to baby-sit.
That's a shame.
Yeah, tell me about it.
So, I will be making tracks, and I'll see you lot all tomorrow.
Sure I'd better be making tracks myself.
You what? Since when do you leave before last orders on a work night? First time for everything, Paudgy.
Seriously though, leaving this early, it's a bit weird.
I'm knackered.
Even a tower of strength like myself needs an early night every now and then.
Alright, I'll believe you, thousands wouldn't.
To Oz.
Oz! When I get settled down yous are all crashin with me, except you, ya pervert! David.
I'll be back in a sec.
Garda Holden, fancy seeing you here? Oh, just heading home, fancied an early night.
Did you now? Can't wait to get to bed.
I bet you can't.
You celebrating something? No.
Listen, I need to talk to you.
Talk then.
Can we not go somewhere a bit more private? Look if you have something to say, just say it, I'm listening.
Okay then
