Salvation (2017) s02e12 Episode Script

Hail Marry

1 Previously on Salvation Oh, my God, you're pregnant.
- Who's the father? - He's dead.
Dylan Edwards.
I'm here for you, Grace.
Till the end.
Whatever happens.
Behold the savior of the human race.
The solar sail and rail gun projects are now fully operational.
Did you get what I asked for? I told you.
Darius really has a plan.
You've done the world a great service, Jillian.
LIAM: This group, COPE? I think they're a suicide cult.
And Jillian's with them.
GRACE: My pregnant daughter is in there.
- [GUNSHOTS.]
- [GASPS.]
Stop! That's my mom.
Don't shoot! I'm unarmed, I just want to talk.
I'm gonna need you to let me walk out of here with Detective Carter and my daughter.
- I am asking you, please.
- Go.
- She stays with us.
- ZOE: No.
No, it's okay.
I want to stay.
Agent.
What do we know? We got most of them, Mr.
Secretary.
What about Jillian Hayes? She's gone, along with their apparent ringleader, Nora.
Mr.
President, I'm sorry.
Bass Shepherd has disappeared.
And we have nothing.
That's Nate, Jillian's friend, the guy who brought her to COPE.
Listen to me, Rosetta.
The rail gun may be in danger.
You need to get everyone out of there.
This is a good thing.
STENDAHL: Dear God.
[SHOUTS.]
LIAM: We still have 58 days to knock that bloody space rock off its course.
I do have one last card left to play.
And it's the greatest Hail Mary of them all.
We're gonna burn our lifeboat.
[PEOPLE SHOUTING.]
In the wake of the rail gun sabotage which destroyed Earth's best hope at stopping the asteroid, The Tanz administration's tenuous grip on order seems to be slipping away.
[SHOUTING.]
With looming food and gas shortages, the government has announced a rationing system A currency crisis unlike anything we've ever seen.
MAN: Take them all.
Take it! The White House has classified the rail gun disaster as an act of terror.
Which it clearly is.
An act of genocide against the human race.
I mean, why would anyone deliberately blow up our best shot at survival? Why would anyone want to condemn humanity? ANCHOR: I think that's the question on everyone's mind here, Sam.
SAM: In other news, President Tanz addressed the nation last night, insisting that measures are still underway to divert the asteroid, but at this point, one has to wonder why anyone would believe him.
[TV CLICKS OFF.]
[KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
Come in.
We need to talk.
Think you might need this.
I take it it's bad news.
Good news and bad news.
The good news is we have one last chance to save the planet A plan I will begin to oversee immediately.
- The bad news? - Take a seat.
It's all yours.
GRACE: How many dead? And how many injured? I understand that, but as of this moment, the National Guard is still under the command of your governor.
Yeah, I will bring it up with the president as soon as I get him.
[SIGHS.]
Run at a bank turned into a riot.
At least seven dead, another 35 injured.
I-I got a list of chaos as long as my arm, and I can't get five uninterrupted minutes with Darius.
Well, you can have all day with him now.
But he can't solve any of those problems anymore.
I take it he didn't consult with you about this first? Darius? Consult with his senior advisor before he resigns the highest office in the land? You're hilarious.
Private citizen Tanz at your service effective 5:00 p.
m.
Eastern Standard Time.
A little advance notice would've been nice.
Sorry.
Things are moving fast.
We need to move faster.
I have no choice.
I have to focus all my attention on plan B.
Well, make that plan C, since plan B just blew up.
Grace, I need you to put the new president up to speed.
Harris, I need you to restore order in a country - in the middle of a meltdown.
- Whoa, hold on.
You want to let us in on this plan C? In very rudimentary terms, we're gonna take a giant rocket ship, bulk up its mass, and ram it into the asteroid.
And if saving ourselves was that simple, why didn't we do this before? I'm sorry, when did you hear me use the word "simple"? But it's-it's viable.
Situation's not ideal, but t-there's enough time to make it work.
And I will.
- [SCOFFS.]
- [DOOR CLOSES.]
You believe him? I want to.
Look, we need to prepare, Grace, for the worst.
- I can't - We're facing tidal waves, firestorms, impact winter.
You have Zoe, we have a future grandchild.
None of Darius's other plans have worked.
It's not his fault some doomsday cult decided to blow up the rail gun.
I'm not assigning blame, I'm calculating the odds, and considering how we might beat them.
We need our own plan C.
[BIRDS CHIRPING.]
BASS: They will blame us because they are corrupt.
And what do corrupt governments do? They peddle lies, and they give false hope.
The failure of the rail gun was inevitable, and ordained.
But the government needs a scapegoat on which to blame their ineptitude, and because they do not understand us, they will demonize us for accepting the truth: that they are the liars and Darius Tanz is the false prophet.
The rail gun was never gonna stop the asteroid.
He knew that.
Yet, he wanted to keep us enslaved by the possibility.
But now, we are free.
Why? - Because we accept.
- ALL: We accept.
This world is coming to an end.
No one can alter the course of destiny, but we can prepare for it.
And we have.
I have selected you, my children, and I have very big plans for you in these coming days.
[KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
Jillian? Come in.
You look troubled.
Something on your mind? Where's Nate? Nate accepted what was.
He's at peace now.
He's dead, isn't he? Celebration Day.
You destroyed the rail gun.
No.
You did.
You, you gave us the plans, Jillian.
You brought them to me.
That was your role.
- And you accepted it.
- Because you said you wanted to bring others hope.
You lied to me.
Or else I never would've But you did.
That was your role, and you need to accept that.
And now you're one of us.
Till the end.
Right? I am.
DARIUS: There she is.
Our way out.
- Tess, play the simulation.
- TESS: Yes, Darius.
There's our friend Samson, and there's our other friend, the gravity tractor, where the solar sail will dock itself in a matter of days.
Now, in conjunction with the solar sail, we use the force of the rocket the nudge the asteroid off course ever so slightly, but just enough hopefully To miss the Earth.
So we're gonna turn the Ark into a battering ram.
A kinetic impactor of sorts.
Yes.
Consider it an understudy for the rail gun.
ALYCIA: Well, everyone knows that understudies aren't as good as the real thing.
Doesn't mean they can't do the job.
Salvation is the largest spacecraft ever built, and the only one that can have a substantial enough impact with the limited amount of time we have left.
Okay, so why didn't we just do this in the first place? [SIGHS.]
'Cause it's a Hail Mary, a silver bullet with zero margin for error.
But it can work.
LIAM: Okay, but the ship's mass isn't great enough to make a dent.
Which is why we're gonna load her up with depleted uranium slugs.
As for how we're gonna get her up there, we're gonna need teams working around the clock to retrofit the rocket with EmDrives.
To account for the additional mass and the required velocity.
Questions? Good.
We're gonna fast-track this.
Nessa, Roger, oversee production and installation of the EmDrive.
Alycia, you and Liam LIAM: Track the orbital trajectory.
Hey, Darius.
The Ark, it's supposed to be humanity's life insurance policy.
Yes, well, there's been a change of circumstances.
We're gonna have to terminate the policy to save the patient.
There's only 53 days left until impact.
You actually believe this can work? It has to, or we're done for.
How many people will this hold? It depends on how comfortable you want to be.
How much is this bunker? Tell you what.
Make me an offer.
[PEN SCRIBBLING.]
[SCOFFS.]
[CLEARS THROAT.]
[STIFLED LAUGH.]
Is this serious? Because you're a little short.
And we're no longer accepting offers in dollars anymore.
Dollars are about to be toilet paper.
Unfortunately, we're only taking hard assets.
Medicine, guns, fuel.
- Gold.
Do you have any gold? - GRACE: Uh, I'm sorry.
Who has truckloads of guns and medicine laying around? Mr.
Secretary, uh, forgive me for stating the obvious, but between Raven Rock and other accommodations set aside for cabinet members, why would you strike out on your own? You have a place to go, for free.
Harris, why didn't you tell me? You already have a spot in a government survival bunker.
- You have to take it.
- I'm not going without you.
I said we're in this together until the end, and I meant it, Grace.
I don't care about me.
I just want Zoe to be safe.
Even if it means putting her in a bunker with ten strangers.
Yeah, well, Zoe may not agree with you there.
Well, our assets are worthless, everything's full or unaffordable.
What's our plan C? I'll take care of this.
I promise.
[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES.]
DARIUS: So it's a trade-off between mass and velocity.
We want to change the trajectory of the asteroid.
Which depends on how hard we hit it.
Which depends on the velocity and the mass of the Ark.
Our job is to find the right balance.
That's the math.
I want you to track the impact of the rail gun slugs we launched.
They should be reaching the asteroid within hours.
That should give us some intel.
Now comes the hard part.
I thought that was the hard part.
We need to refit the Ark with three EmDrives for additional velocity.
You've built it once, just do it again.
No, that's not the problem.
It's the icosahedrite.
Icosa-what? To make our first EmDrive, we needed a material to line the engine nozzle that would collimate the microwaves, and we managed to get this tiny piece of an icosahedrite, but only by robbing his dear, sweet Uncle Nick.
Who deals in rare minerals and coups and murder.
There must be somewhere else we can get it.
It's a specific mineral found in a meteor, and in fact, one-of-a-kind meteor, actually.
And my uncle has the only source of it on this planet.
Great.
Why don't we just steal it again? He was smart enough after the first time to move it.
Question is where? Uh, this is Zoe Barrows.
I want to make an appointment to see the doctor.
I'm pregnant, and I want to consider my options.
You must be pretty desperate to darken my door.
Checkmate.
The game.
In exchange for the icosahedrite, your Ark, I want it.
That's not on the table.
Half of those seats are mine.
The Ark's not an option anymore, not for you at least.
What is that supposed to mean? With the rail gun gone, I'll need Salvation to step in.
You're going to crash her into the asteroid.
Hmm? With a little boost from your EmDrives.
- It'll work.
- It won't work! Darius! You will be blowing up the one chance that some of us have of getting off this planet.
Need I remind you that Tanz is half mine, the Ark is half mine.
I am the only one with access to the launch code.
No way in hell I'll ever give it to you.
That Ark is the answer to saving the planet.
[CHUCKLES.]
Not you.
You have one choice, Uncle, just one.
Die here, in this prison cell, or give me what I want.
I want my freedom, then.
Out of this cell, all charges dropped.
Give me five hours, and you will have your icosahedrite.
You are never to contact Grace Barrows or her daughter again, so help me, or I will kill you.
[LOCK BUZZES.]
[DOOR OPENS, CLOSES.]
TREY: As much as I would like to put my faith in Darius Tanz, we need to accept that this asteroid is coming and we might not be able to stop it.
The government's plan is one of last resort, the doomsday protocol.
I've reached out to the UN.
We've formed an international coalition with the Russian and Chinese governments; we're all on the same side now.
Our plan is to launch nuclear weapons in outer space before the asteroid breaches the atmosphere.
Mr.
President, forgive me, but we've been down this road.
I mean, this will break the asteroid into pieces which will rain down on Earth in unpredictable ways.
Billions of people could die.
TREY: I'm aware of the consequences, Mr.
Secretary, but our scientists believe Tanz's plan has a 20% chance of success.
Those odds make no one comfortable.
Given this reality, Director Davis is here to go over our doomsday protocol.
I turn the floor over to her.
Thank you, Mr.
President.
Assuming the worst, preparations are being made for food and shelter.
Now, we have ordered the construction of grow houses, but it will take time to get them up and running.
In the meantime, we are making stockpiles.
And shelters? All public bunkers are full.
The FBI, along with DTRA, Homeland Security, Housing and Agriculture have taken steps to preserve life and order for all those that remain.
What about government officials? What's the protocol? DAVIS: The president, vice president, along with members of the cabinet, the congress and agency directors will all move into survival shelters.
Now, each will be limited to bringing only his or her spouse and direct dependents.
Wait, spouses and family members are now included? Revised protocol under President Mackenzie.
She added those provisions.
TREY: Now, resources will be directed to the construction of shelters and food production.
NORA [FAINTLY.]
: What would you have wanted me to do? I-I couldn't just let them come in.
BASS: Do not question me.
NORA: I'm so I'm so sorry.
BASS: We wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for your foolishness.
Taking up arms? Shooting a police officer? I was trying to protect our people.
- We cannot have another disaster.
- [GROANS.]
We need to be careful if we're going to complete our mission.
[FLOORBOARDS CREAK.]
- [DOOR OPENS.]
- [CRIES.]
[DOOR CLOSES.]
So, at, say, 30 kilometers per second, a slug will travel at 2.
6 million kilometers per day.
Given the trajectory and the velocity, it'll take the Ark 27 days to reach the asteroid.
Liam? What are you doing? I'm sorry.
Nothing.
Yeah, I can see that.
But why? [LAUGHS.]
I just can't believe we're in this place because of Because of your ex-girlfriend? Jillian blew up the whole damn world and you're still pining for her.
I'm the reason she got into this mess in the first place.
She left Boston, left her family because of me, and then I abandoned her.
You can't possibly blame yourself for her crazy.
She was isolated.
COPE took advantage of that.
And I knew something was off and I should have gotten her out.
How, by kidnapping her? If I had to, yes.
I don't even know if she's alive.
Because of her, there's a good chance that 53 days from now, none of us will be alive.
She never would've done this knowingly.
I don't believe it.
Jillian is a lost cause.
How can we still be talking about her? Because when you love someone, you don't just give up on them.
Well, maybe you should! I promised myself I'd never come to you like this.
It's for Zoe.
My money's worthless.
To buy a spot in a bunker on the black market, they're asking for hard assets.
Grace I funded half the Ark out of my own pocket.
My money's on paper real estate, stocks, investments.
And you know what's happened to all that.
I wish I could offer you something.
More than anything, I wish I could help, but in some ways, I'm in the same position as you now.
You have your hangar, sealed off underground.
Once we launch Salvation, that hangar will be rendered uninhabitable.
This plan will work.
How do you know that? Every plan has failed up to now.
I'm sorry.
You've lost faith.
Darius, I always believe in you, for better or for worse.
It's just [SIGHS.]
faith is a luxury right now.
It's not a solution.
Let me see what-what I can do.
[ALARM SOUNDING.]
What's happening? The telemetry.
Something's wrong.
Wait here a moment.
ALYCIA: .
23, track .
23.
DARIUS: What's going on? The rail gun slugs you fired before it was sabotaged, they're not gonna hit the asteroid.
What? That can't be right.
Yeah, well, the tracking data doesn't lie.
Why didn't we notice this earlier? Well, the variance has been subtle over days, never enough to trip the alarm until now.
I have quadruple-checked the targeting package.
I ran the computer simulations.
The math is correct.
Rosetta and her team accounted for magnetic fields, solar flares, radiation.
- I personally checked it all.
- This is a disaster.
The calculations used to program the rail gun are the same ones we'll need to pilot the Ark and if they're off, then plan C Is no plan at all.
GRACE: I-I don't know what to think.
Darius looked uncertain for the first time maybe ever.
It scared me.
He's gonna try to help us with a survival bunker, but Don't bother.
I have a place for us.
You do? And Zoe, too? Yeah.
My God.
Oh, that's great news.
Isn't it? Depends on how you feel about what I say next.
Those federal bunkers, there's a spot for me.
But I can also bring my spouse and her children.
Harris, I can't ask you You're not asking.
I'm-I'm offering.
Grace, in the Ark, when we had hypoxia, what was the last image you saw before losing consciousness? I don't remember.
Well, I do.
It was you.
I know, yes, this is a marriage of necessity, but the truth is I never stopped loving you.
I bought this for you six months ago.
- Harris - Right before our plans were interrupted.
Grace, will you marry me? LIAM: All right, give me the asteroid albedo and rotation rate again.
0.
046 and 5.
9 times ten to the minus six hertz.
That's what I have, too.
That's because our numbers are right.
Well, clearly, something went wrong.
ALYCIA: Maybe there's a glitch in Tess.
I mean, since you shut her down and then restarted her, she's never been the same.
So it's my fault? Well, it's not mine.
Darius, we need to get Tess started on those orbital calculations right away.
We need to launch that Ark as soon as those EmDrives are attached.
You sure Uncle Nick's gonna deliver? It's already on route, a direct trade, Nick for rock.
The FBI will oversee it, - but I need you to be there.
- Yeah.
ALYCIA: But what good is all of this if the calculations are off? We still don't know where to aim the Ark.
LIAM: Stop being so negative.
No, she's right.
We'll need a fail-safe to be able to adjust, otherwise this plan won't work.
We'll need our targeting systems to be adaptable at a moment's notice.
How do we do that? We remove the element of distance.
Keep looking for the miscalculation that you won't find.
Where are you going? To take care of some unfinished business.
ZOE: So you're gonna marry Harris? Yes.
And we'll all be together, you, me, Harris and the baby.
[SCOFFS.]
Yeah, and what? Live under the ground like a bunch of mole people? Only if everything else fails.
This would just be temporary.
Well, how long are we gonna be down there? I don't know yet, but you're my daughter, and you're pregnant and it's my duty to keep you safe.
Well, what if I wasn't pregnant? Would you still be marrying Harris? [STAMMERS.]
I went to the doctor today, just to talk about my options.
Can I really bring a baby into all this? Should I? No one can answer that question but you.
Yeah.
I thought about it.
I want this baby.
And I feel like if I give up on this, I'm giving up on the world.
Like I've lost hope.
Is there still hope, Mom? There's always hope.
Okay.
Are you okay? Fine.
What are you doing up? I couldn't sleep.
It wasn't fair the way that Bass spoke to you.
And no one has been more loyal.
[SNIFFLES.]
He didn't mean it.
He's under a lot of stress right now.
Don't make excuses for him.
I'm not strong like you are, Jillian.
It's gonna be okay, Nora.
[CRIES.]
We just need to stick together.
[CRIES.]
[NORA CRYING.]
NICHOLAS: Liam.
[LAUGHS.]
Good to see you again, son.
I wish I could say the same.
Satisfied? Let him go.
[HANDCUFFS LOOSEN.]
I'll see you soon.
[SIGHS.]
[PHONE VIBRATES.]
Darius? - Uh, it's - Midnight.
I, um, I brought an age-appropriate date, for what it's worth.
Is Zoe here? She went to her dad's.
- There's something I want to - We've had a - You first.
- You go.
Let's leave this to chance.
[SIGHS.]
No chivalry in fate, I guess.
Okay, so, we've had a setback, - as you know.
- Yes.
I think I know how to fix the problem.
You do? In order to make sure we hit the asteroid in just the right spot, we'll need someone aboard Salvation with the technical knowledge to make last-second adjustments.
And, um it's a one-way ticket.
So, what are you saying? You You're going up in the Ark? It's a suicide mission.
I have no choice, Grace.
It has to be me.
What is wrong with you? You-you come here in the middle of the night with a bottle of wine to tell me you're going on a suicide mission? I mean, what the hell am I supposed to do with that information? Celebrate? Toast? Here's to Darius going up in flames.
I thought you might want to hear it from me in person.
Well, I don't.
I don't want to hear it from you at all.
No one knows the Ark like I do, Grace.
- [SCOFFS.]
- I can't let the human race go to hell while I cower in a bunker.
I'm-I'm on borrowed time, anyway.
Don't.
If you do the math, trading one life for 7 billion is a good deal.
But why does it have to be you? God, I hate this.
All of it.
That stupid-ass space rock has ruined everything, the whole damn thing.
The silver lining We would never have met without it.
[CRIES.]
Grace.
I'm here because whatever time I have left I want to spend with you.
Unless - [GASPS SOFTLY.]
- Let's get back to the truck.
We need to load the supplies and get them to our team.
[KEYS JANGLE.]
MAN: Let's head outside.
[WHISPERS.]
: Come on MAN: Get these weapons to the other facility.
You got it.
MAN 2: Hey, uh, what do you think's going on? MAN: I don't ask any questions.
Just need to get this stuff to the other facility.
- That's all I know.
- MAN 2: All right.
We'll get it loaded up.
[EXHALES.]
MAN 2: That's about it.
I'll grab the rest [PHONE VIBRATING.]
What do you want, Uncle? Oh, I want to help you and your little red-headed girlfriend.
Somehow, I doubt that.
Well, a little bird told me that she and the defense secretary Harris Edwards were looking into a long-term survival bunker.
[QUIETLY.]
: I told you, you leave her alone.
Well, I'm looking after your interests as well as mine, Darius.
I have a bunker for her and her daughter.
What do you get out of all this? You unfreeze my assets.
[LAUGHS SOFTLY.]
You told me I was a hopeless dreamer.
That I would fail and leave this planet doomed.
A good gambler always hedges his bets.
One way or another, I intend to survive this.
Uh, I'm like a cockroach, in that sense.
But I'd rather be a rich cockroach.
Deal or no deal? Meet me at the parking garage on Aberdeen.
With the papers for that bunker.
Very well.
[PHONE BEEPS.]
He's on his way.
[ENGINE STARTS.]
Darius? Where are you going? Out for a bit.
I'll be back in time to make you breakfast.
Promise? I do.
[ELEVATOR CHIMES.]
What are you doing? I'm comparing Samson's path with all previously recorded asteroids.
I'm looking for other - orbital trajectory variations.
- Liam.
And if I can find the variable to cause the slug to miss.
Liam.
Do you realize what Darius is planning? He's gonna pilot Salvation himself.
That's his choice, Liam.
You know you won't be able to talk him out of it.
Well, if I can figure this out, then he won't have to.
Okay.
Enough.
It's 5:00 a.
m.
I'm down there trying to make an EmDrive that'll save the planet.
You want to do something for Darius? Make sure that he doesn't die for no reason.
Now, I need you down there to help me program the launch simulator for the Salvation with the full payload.
Ugh, how can you just be business as usual? I care about this man, and he is willing to sacrifice himself for all of us.
I mean, do you even have a heart? Do I? Do I have a heart? Are you kidding me? You broke it.
Geez.
Alycia, I'm I'm sorry.
You always seem so Cold? Strong.
[LAUGHS SOFTLY.]
I thought I was just a Well, you weren't.
- Hey, um - Please.
Don't.
It's humiliating enough that you're still in love with her.
You know, Liam, I don't want to lose Darius, either.
Believe it or not.
I do believe it.
Alycia, hold the elevator.
[BRAKES SQUEAKING.]
Allow us to sweep the area, sir.
Of course.
[HIGH-PITCHED HUMMING.]
Something's wrong.
What the hell is that? It's a sonic weapon.
Cover your ears! [GROANS.]
[GASPS WEAKLY.]
[BIRDS CHIRPING.]
[KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
I think it's time I make you breakfast.
Hi.
- Interrupting something? - Uh Uh, no, no.
Come on in.
What, uh, what's going on? I talked to the Secretary of Affairs at the GAO.
He asked that we get paperwork filled out as soon as possible.
So I called a buddy of mine who's a judge; he can marry us today.
A last minute bouquet for a last minute wedding.
Today? Is that a problem? Where are you taking me? You really should have given me half the Ark [CHUCKLES.]
: when I asked nicely.
[GROANING.]
Hummingbird.
Ease up on the next dose.
We need him lucid.
[PANTING.]
Come on.
Oh, come on.
[PANTING.]
Okay.
[PHONE VIBRATING.]
Hello? JILLIAN: Liam! Liam, Liam, it's me.
Jillian.
Hey, where are you? Oh, I don't, I don't know.
Um, COPE, they, they took us somewhere and I-I escaped and-and now I'm, uh, I'm near a road.
I swear, I I had no idea what they were planning - with the rail gun.
- Are you okay? Oh, uh, I don't have a lot of time.
Bass is planning something and I-I don't know what it is, but I-I heard him talking and [VEHICLE APPROACHING.]
- Hold on.
- What's going on? Darius.
What about Darius? - They have Dar - [PHONE BEEPS.]
Jillian.
Jillian.
[SIGHS.]
Liam.
- What was that? - Where's Darius? BASS: You didn't damage him, did you? Scuffed but not marred.
As long as his mind is intact.
[PANTING.]
I thought nothing about you could shock me, but the two of you being in bed together Let me guess, you met at a cocktail party in hell.
[BOTH CHUCKLING.]
Sebastian's father was one of the founding members of the Q-17, and a dear friend who shares a common interest.
And now we shall have it.
Both of us.
You crazy son of a bitch.
What are you doing?! I'm taking what's mine.
DARIUS: This is insane! It's best that you accept the truth, Mr.
Tanz.
This asteroid is our destiny.
You really are mad.
This world will be destroyed, but I intend to build a better one with only the best people.
I am Noah.
And I believe you have my Ark.
