The Dead Zone s02e17 Episode Script

The Mountain

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
Johnny: The damn fish aren't hungry but I am.
I'm bored.
Come on, JJ, fishing takes time.
Maybe we're using the wrong kind of worms.
Yeah? What kind of worms would you recommend? I don't know, the kind that fish eat? Hold on, let me help you with that, JJ.
(reel spinning) - Here we go, try this one.
- And be patient.
All right, JJ? Walt: Yeah, take your time, huh? (whistling tunelessly) (fishing reel cranking) - Whoa! - Dad, I've got one! - All right, hang on, JJ, reel him in.
- Reel it in, come on! - Reel it in.
- Get the net.
Walt: Hang on, buddy.
- Get the net.
- I caught a fish! Nice.
He is a whopper too, huh? Walt: Wow, yeah! Maybe you just needed the right worm, huh? - Yeah.
- Huh.
- Ahoy, the mighty fishermen! - Mom, I caught a fish.
Good job, JJ! - How's it going? - It's going.
Hang in there.
Ow! - I stepped on something.
- Oh, honey, did you cut your foot? There's something down there.
Walt: It's aluminum.
I think it's from a boat.
(alarm ringing) Mayday, mayday, First Direct 233.
We'd like radar vectors, we've lost both engines.
Johnny, what is it? (theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* I found it.
Wasn't there a plane crash up here a few years ago two, three years ago? Yeah, it was First Direct flight 233.
It was September, 1999.
It was a courier jet, went down in the mountains in a storm.
It was a Dassault 20C, two crewmembers.
We had a massive search but turned up nothing but a couple of parts, no plane.
I actually spent a bit of time looking for it myself.
And they never found it? How is that possible? It's rugged terrain here.
You get 200 yards off the trail, you'd never see it.
Who's the ranger up here? We'd like to report this.
You're sure it's not from a boat, huh? It's not from a boat, it's from a plane crash.
Johnny saw it.
- What do you mean he saw it? - He sees stuff.
He can even tell when the fish are biting.
- He's psychic.
- Oh yeah? Woman: What's going on? Honey, these folks here seem to think they found a piece of the missing flight 233.
Remember that? Mr.
Smith here, he's a psychic.
He seems to think it went down on the east side of the mountain.
That would explain why you couldn't find it, after three years searching the west side.
Wait a minute, Johnny Smith? Didn't you save a bunch of kids from a fire in Cleaves Mills? You caught some sort of serial killer too? (Sarah clearing throat) Ahem.
Sorry.
You really think you know where that plane went down? - It was headed towards this peak.
- Mount Manasquan? That is east of here.
If you'd just get the ranger for us, that'd be great.
That's Randy Turman.
I'll get him on the radio.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, look out! Look out.
You found my escape artist.
Want to touch? - Can I? - Is it poisonous? There are no poisonous snakes in Maine, are there? It's like Ireland.
This is a milk snake.
It only looks like a North American coral snake.
- JJ: It's not slimy.
- Nope.
What's your name? JJ.
Well, JJ, it's the color of the bands that lets you know.
Red and black, friend of Jack.
- Red and yellow - Kill a fellow.
You must be John Smith.
Pauline said you might have some information on the flight 233 crash.
He says he saw it crash on Mount Manasquan.
Walt: If he says he saw it, it happened.
I'm Walt Bannerman, Penobscot County Sheriff.
He's worked with us on a number of cases.
I have never known him to be wrong.
Really? You think if we went up there, we might be able to find the crash site? I'm not the hiker I used to be, but I might be able to help you narrow down the search.
It's a lot of ground to cover, so why don't I come along? Sorry, JJ, that's gonna kind of kill our camping trip.
But why don't you stay with Mom until we come back? No way, we're going with you, Dad.
It's okay with me.
It will most likely be an overnighter.
- Looking for an adventure, kid? - You bet! JJ, I don't know who knows what we're gonna find up there? Aw, Mom! I'm not scared, I just touched a snake.
(adults chuckle) Don't worry, ma'am, I'll keep him out of harm's way.
There's a cabin on that east trail.
We could camp there tonight.
- Okay.
- Yes! How's your leg holding up? So far, the hike is easier than one of Bruce's workouts.
- (chuckles) - At least somebody is bonding with JJ.
Don't listen to him.
Now's your chance.
JJ is studying ecology in school right now, and I seem to remember that's one of your favorite subjects.
It's one thing for JJ and I to get to know each other better on a family camping trip, but this is about one of my visions.
I just wish it was a little bit more "normal.
" Johnny, if you're waiting for the perfect moment, it is not gonna happen.
So go on.
- Go.
- All right.
I hope he's right.
What if it just isn't meant to be? Hey, Johnny! Ranger Randy showed me an owl's nest.
Wow, look at that.
- Spotted owl, huh? - Turman: Yeah.
Logging in the '70s almost wiped them out.
- Aren't they endangered? - That's right, JJ! Everything in this forest is interconnected.
If the owls weren't here to feed on the small animals, this whole habitat could be damaged.
Whatcha looking for? You see, owls are predators, they eat small mammals like mice.
They swallow them whole because they don't have teeth.
They can't digest the bones so they spit them out into something like this.
It's called a pellet.
Cool.
It looks like a mushed up skeleton.
- Can I touch it? - Sure.
Cool, huh? Here, go show your mom.
She's gonna love that, okay? (both chuckle) - You know your park, huh? - Well, I am the ranger.
You do pretty well yourself.
I used to teach high school biology at Cleaves Mills.
Ah, nice town.
- A little crowded.
- Crowded? Cleaves Mills? Hell, even Spirit Lake's getting a little crowded for me.
Park Service cabin is just a few bends ahead.
We can camp there tonight.
Cool.
(Sarah screaming) What is it? (chuckles) It's nice, get it away! Get it away, eeew! She liked that.
Turman: At first, they thought it was a black bear or maybe a brush wolf.
So Ned the first logger goes to investigate Wham! He disappears.
The other logger, whose name is Gerald, takes his rifle and he goes to investigate, because he knows better than to go into the forest alone at night! They tracked him into the woods until his footprints disappeared as if he'd been yanked up into the air.
Ned and Gerald were never seen again.
Of course, this all happened a long time ago, right? True, true.
And then, the old man of Mount Manasquan - retired to Florida in 1992.
- (laughter) Okay, park rule: Scary stories must be followed by marshmallows.
Cool.
Johnny? What is it? - Sarah: Johnny? - Nothing, I just I just thought I saw something.
It must be the old man of Mount Manasquan! Walt! (chuckles) What? I guess it was nothing.
(branch cracks) Evening, folks! - I hope we didn't spook you.
- Isn't this is a surprise? It's a big mountain.
I thought you could use some help.
Marc here spent three summers looking for the plane on that mountain.
I guess we can't blame him for wanting to help out.
I hope it's okay? - It's all right with me.
- An extra pair of eyes could be useful.
Oh, Mr.
Smith, look at this.
I brought something to show you here.
Check that out.
- Damn it, we've got a rudder jammed! - Watch out for those trees.
Come on! Turman: Are you seeing something? Their rudder was damaged.
They crashed into the trees.
Up on the east slope, that's some pretty dense forest.
- No wonder we couldn't find it.
- I think it's somebody's bedtime, hm? Walt: Yeah, why don't we all get some rest, huh? Come on! Why don't you three bunk in the cabin and the rest of us will sleep under the stars? All right.
- Walt: Watch your marshmallow.
- Night! - Night! - Good night.
I wish I could fall off to sleep like that.
Mmm.
Well, if the mountain air doesn't work, I might have something.
- Oh yeah? - Uh-huh.
You've been wonderful about this whole weekend.
- I have? - Mm-hmm.
Letting Johnny be part of this.
(sighs) I know it isn't easy.
You know what? It's all good.
Let's get some sleep, okay? Sorry I ate all the marshmallows, I had no time for dinner.
Hey, no problem.
Marc! I need help with this.
All right, here I come.
(door opens) Walt.
Walt.
Walt! Now what? Something's up with that guy from the boat shop.
- He's got a gun! - Are you sure? Yeah.
All right, all right, let's go get Turman.
First, they show up uninvited; now he's got a gun? There's something on that plane he wants.
How the hell? I see.
Well, it looks like you're right, Mr.
Smith unfortunately.
Why are you doing this? There's something on that plane you guys want.
- I told you not to let him touch you.
- He didn't touch me! You two should have stayed back at the lake like we agreed.
No, you wouldn't even be up here if it wasn't for me.
This changes everything.
What's this $2 million cargo? See, this is where it gets interesting.
We're not really sure.
All we know is that a single package was insured for over $2 million.
Walt: How do you know it even survived the crash? For all you know, there's nothing left but a smoking hole in the ground.
The emergency beacon survived the crash.
It just went dead before they located the wreckage.
The insurance company must have been pretty sure it survived.
They spent months looking for the cargo before they paid off the claim.
We stopped trying to find it ourselves until you came along, Mr.
Smith.
So what now? Collect your loot? Eliminate your witnesses? You don't seem like a killer to me, Turman.
For $2 million bucks I am! - Mom? - Shh.
It's okay, sweetie, go back to sleep.
Don't! Let's go.
Now you wanna put this someplace safe? All right, Mom knows too.
That makes everything a little simpler.
Sarah, where's JJ? Is he okay? He's asleep in the cabin.
Turman: Okay, this hero stuff, it's only gonna get somebody hurt.
You don't want that.
We don't want that.
Here's what's gonna happen.
JJ is a great kid, he doesn't need to know anything.
As far as he is concerned we're just on a little treasure hunt.
The rest of you, behave yourselves and nobody gets hurt.
Understood? That goes double for you, Mr.
Smith.
You help us find that plane, you all get to go home for dinner.
I'll cooperate with you.
All right then.
I suggest we all get a good night's sleep, we've got a big day tomorrow.
Marc, you crashed the party, so you're first watch.
Beautiful day for a hike, huh? I can think of better ways to spend my time.
Look, this isn't what I had in mind, Mr.
Smith.
I'm not some bad guy looking to kidnap a family.
It's not you I'm worried about.
I'll handle Marc.
You just get us to that plane.
JJ, come back here, please.
Aw, Mom, I want to go with the ranger.
It's okay, I love the little guy.
Okay, but we're right behind you.
You you've ever been on a treasure hunt, JJ? - No, sir.
- No? This is kind of like that, except your friend Johnny here is our treasure map.
Cool! JJ: Look at this cool rock I found! Hey, that's a beauty! Turman: Oh wow! It's called basalt.
- Can I see that, JJ? - Sure! (country music playing) That's a nice chunk of volcanic glass you've got there.
These mountains around here are all volcanic.
- Can I keep it? - Sure.
So, Pauline, how long have you and Marc been together? What do you care? Just making conversation, guy.
I don't know, about five years.
Six, actually.
It must get really lonely up here in the winter, huh? It's not so bad.
We've got each other, right, baby? That's right.
I guess the ranger station is open all year round too, huh? Hey, Mr.
Smith, why don't you come up here with me and JJ? Turman: Trail's washed out up ahead.
It looks like we've gotta cross at the old railroad bridge, about a quarter mile upstream.
Didn't a bunch of kids get killed up at that bridge, last summer? It's the only way across, otherwise it's a two-day walk up to the narrows.
Let me just scout ahead a bit, see if there's another crossing.
- Keep an eye on the sheriff.
- Yeah, don't worry.
The rest of you stay here till I get back.
Get some food and some rest.
- I wanna be a ranger when I grow up.
- I thought you wanted to be a cop.
JJ: I want to be a cop and a ranger and a scientist.
I'm sure you'll be all of those things and more.
Pauline: I told you to pack some PowerBars.
- I did.
- They're not here.
I'll take a look.
- (moans) - (grunting) Sarah! Walt, no! - Daddy! - What the hell is the matter with you? Sarah, I saw it, you were gonna get - it wasn't gonna work.
- Listen to your friend, Sheriff.
Turman: He's never wrong.
You said so yourself.
All you people had to do was play along, but the sheriff had to be the big hero.
What do you expect? You can't kidnap a man's family and expect him to do nothing.
You can't expect me to do nothing either.
Calm down.
Take him back from where we came a few hundred yards, and tie him up where no hiker can see him.
- I think we ought to - Just do what I tell you for once! - And then what? - You shut up and do what you're told.
Like I've been saying this whole time, Mr.
Smith helps us find the plane, everybody gets to go home.
By the time you guys pick up the sheriff and trek back down to the lake, we're gonna be long gone across the border.
Get going! Catch up with us at the bridge.
Hey, Sheriff, uh-huh.
Leave the pack! - Now what? - Turn around so I can tie you up.
You touch my wife and kid, I'll kill you.
Uh, you're not gonna have to worry about that anymore.
(splashes) You should have jumped while you had the chance.
When he tells you not to worry, jump! You two, shut up! Go! I want to go with you.
Don't worry, JJ.
I'll be back in a couple of hours, all right? Mom will take care of you.
Do as your daddy says, boy.
Let's go, people.
Move! (wood creaks) You're not really thinking about going across that, are you? Don't worry, I've got a plan.
All right, Mr.
Smith, you're the psychic.
You go first.
(wood creaks) (creaking continues) All right, this one's no good.
Step here.
Not that I don't trust you, Mr.
Smith, but take my hand, JJ.
It's okay, JJ, I'm not gonna let anything happen to you.
It's okay, baby.
Marc: Right down over there.
- Now what? - Turn around so I can tie you up.
You touch my wife and kid, I'll kill you.
You're not gonna have to worry about that anymore.
Damn, Johnny.
(gunshot) (panting) Walt! It's okay, Sarah.
Stay focused, okay? Step right here.
Pauline, do you see Marc anywhere? Not yet.
Step here, okay? This one's no good.
Okay, come on, Sarah! No, the next one! Just step here, all right, Sarah? Can I tell you something? Marc knows you're nailing his wife.
He's going to wait until you find your cargo and then he's gonna kill you too.
Nice try, Mr.
Smith, but the mindgames aren't gonna work.
The thing I know about Marc is he's got no impulse control.
The fact that I am still breathing means he doesn't know.
And you sure as hell aren't gonna tell him.
Understood? Good.
What happened? I had to fire off a warning shot.
He tried to make a break for it.
All right, hurry up then.
I'll guide you across.
(wood creaking) What happened to Walt? I don't know yet.
Turman: Okay, good.
Skip that one.
This one looks bad right here.
Then step over it.
We all made it, trust me.
Careful.
- Now what? - Just a few more.
Take the next step.
(groaning) Come here.
Help me! Turman! (grunting) Listen, take my hand.
Take my hand! You're not gonna have to worry about that anymore.
Damn, Johnny! (gunshot) Turman: Sorry about that.
- I must have miscounted.
- Yeah, sure you did.
- You okay, baby? - Yeah.
I know you touched Marc.
What really happened to the sheriff? You know what happened, you bastard.
Just don't tell his wife and kid, all right? Okay, Mr.
Smith, upstream or downstream? I don't know.
All my visions so far have been from up above the trees.
It all looks so different from down here and without anything to touch - it's hard for me to tell.
- You still got that piece of metal? Give it here.
No! Hand it to Mr.
Smith.
Maybe he can get a hit off it.
- It doesn't work like that.
- Try.
You've got nothing to lose.
(beeping) Come on! - (branches snapping) - (men scream) I'm seeing the crash.
It's all too disjointed.
It's hard for me to get any sense of which direction to go in.
That's not good enough.
Try harder.
- It's that way! - Downstream? - You sure? - Yeah, I'm sure.
- I'm tired.
- Me too, sweetie.
Just hang in there.
You're being super brave, JJ.
I want my dad.
What's gonna happen to us? Just stay close to your mom, all right? Everything's gonna be all right.
We'll stop here a minute.
Give the kid a rest.
Marc: I'm gonna bust up ahead here and scout around a little.
Turman: Suit yourself.
Give a shout if you see anything.
All right.
That's okay, kid.
I guess I'd be mad too.
Don't worry though, you'll be with your dad soon enough.
Come on, JJ.
You know, Mr.
Smith I'm really starting to respect this talent of yours.
It's a shame we didn't get a chance to meet under different circumstances.
What was your plan, anyway? I was hoping I could come up here with just you folks, find the package and stash it someplace I could come back for it later, and nobody would be the wiser.
I never intended for anybody to get hurt.
How much farther? Well, it can't be too much farther.
We're almost above the treeline.
You did say the plane went down in the trees, didn't you? That's what I saw.
What else do you see, Mr.
Smith? If you're so psychic, tell me my future.
- Pauline! - No, I really want to know.
Come on, Mr.
Psychic.
Am I wrapped in a mink in Switzerland? Or am I in Rio on the beach with a bikini? - Pauline! - I'm just having a little fun.
Go ahead! Touch me.
(scoffs) You don't want to touch me? All right then, I'll touch you.
(screams) Mayday, mayday! I need a Medevac chopper immediately.
I've got six gunshots victims and I'm wounded.
- So what did you see? - Oh, you were lying in the sun.
The beach! I knew it.
You guys, I found the crash! It's just up ahead, over here.
- Stay here with Mom and the kid.
- No way, I'm coming with you.
Stay here! Okay.
Mr.
Smith? Why don't you come with me? (softly) Walt is okay.
Come on! It's right over here! No wonder they couldn't find it from the air, huh? Marc: It's a mess in here.
You can't find anything.
You guys gonna come and help me or what? Check the cockpit.
Everything might have been thrown forward in the crash.
Come on! Go give him a hand, Mr.
Smith.
It's a steel container about yea big.
Marc: That's pretty nasty, huh? Poor bastard.
Guess we all gotta go sometime.
Yeah, some sooner than others.
It's all paper and boxes where is the damn thing? Come on in here and help me.
Get in here and help me.
All right.
How's it going in there, fellas? Marc: Not so good.
Damn mess in here.
We're still looking.
Ayah! (pants) That would be the other pilot.
- Is this what you're looking for? - What? Yeah, that looks like it.
Yeah! You're never gonna live to spend it.
Turman is gonna kill you, Marc.
What are you talking about? We're partners.
Your partner is screwing your wife.
How would you know that? The same way I know you didn't tie up the sheriff.
Bastard! So you found it.
Aren't you gonna open it? Forget about the case.
What about you and Pauline? Huh? He says you've been screwing (grunts) (both grunting) Run, JJ! Are you ever wrong? I've always wanted to touch two million bucks of anything.
I guess this isn't the end you had in mind? It's not over yet.
Drop the gun! - Now it's over.
- Almost! (gunshot) (moaning) Where's JJ? JJ! Dad! (pants) Copy that.
See you when you got here.
They'll have a chopper up here in 20 minutes.
Is everybody all right? So that's what this was all about? What is it? Computer chips.
$2 million worth of four-year-old computer chips.
They're worthless.
(theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
