The Fosters s05e07 Episode Script

Chasing Waterfalls

1 Previously Ana and I are engaged.
I want you to be my best man.
I'll make you a deal.
You don't play video games, I don't get high.
Hey! I didn't see you raised your skill tier last week.
Does it really matter what I do when we aren't together? It does if you lie about it.
I have some tax issues with the IRS.
STEF: Are we gonna lose our home? I won't go back to school.
I am 16.
I can drop out! It is my life! Emma, you're the one.
She won't marry me if I don't finish school.
High school friendships don't last.
Can I ask what happened between you and Tess? It's always bothered her.
Hey! Well! If it isn't the best man, himself.
Dad told me that he asked you.
You know, being best man comes with a lot of responsibility.
You're gonna have to throw him a bachelor party.
Just don't get strippers.
It's, like, so Neanderthal.
And you're probably gonna have to throw an engagement party as well.
What? I have to throw him an engagement party? Really? How am I gonna do that? Throwing a party's easy.
Just pick a theme and a place, and it basically plans itself.
(GASPS) Why don't we have it here?! The theme could be, like, "Second Chances.
" Uh, I-I don't think that's a theme that Mike and Ana would appreciate.
And no offense, I'm not particularly interested in throwing an engagement party for my ex-husband.
I'll be right back.
Hey! Hey.
Uh, I just wanted to give you a heads up that Jesus won't be able to work with you today.
He's being assessed.
I had to drop him off at the school about 6:30 AM.
It was brutal.
Oh, wow.
I mean, that's That's good news, right? I mean, that he wants to go back.
Yeah, um, you and he talk about Emma? L-lately? Yeah, sure, I mean, a little.
You know, made her a ring the other day.
A ring? Yeah, you know, cause they're going steady or whatever.
He wanted to give her something.
So, he made a little wooden ring.
Ah.
Okay.
Good morning.
- Did she - I guess Brandon didn't say anything.
Ah, good.
The last thing I need is another reason to hate me.
Yeah! Yeah, me too.
Uh, did you talk to Brandon? Yeah.
He said he's fine.
- Is he? - I hope so.
Well, I have to take Mason to preschool.
So have a good one.
Come on, guys.
We gotta go.
Wow.
When does that ever happen? (ALL SAYING "BYE") Dude, feel free! Uh, listen, I know that we said we wouldn't make a big deal about Jesus and Emma's betrothment, or whatever, but um he he gave her a ring.
Lena: A ring?! What? An engagement ring? No, no, not an engagement ring.
I don't think.
It's it's a "going together" ring.
It's it's made of wood.
Are you sure that's all it is? Because he told me the only reason he wanted to go back to school, is because Emma said she wouldn't marry him unless he did.
Yeah.
I-I don't I think it's just, uh, you know, Jesus being Jesus.
I mean, Emma's got a good head on her shoulders.
I don't see her agreeing to something like that, right? (KNOCKING) DEAN: Hey! It it's Dean.
Uh, yeah! Come on in.
(DOOR OPENS) The gate was open.
- Okay.
- (CHUCKLES) I just wanted to let you know that the trust documents are all ready.
And good news: I talked to your lender.
And since you've never missed a payment, they're willing to take Lena's dad off of the title without refinancing.
You wanna stop by after work? I can explain everything.
You wanna say 5:00? Yeah, 5:00 sounds good.
Thank you very much.
- Appreciate it.
- Cool.
- See ya then.
- All right, thanks! We're taking my dad off the title? I wanted to see what was possible before I brought anything up.
Listen, Lena, I-I'm just concerned.
Okay? What what if your dad has financial troubles again? The trust only keeps us out of probate court if one of us dies.
It doesn't protect us from another lien.
I just I thought that maybe we could talk to your parents about it tonight at dinner.
I don't know.
I don't I don't know.
Let me think about it.
(THEME MUSIC PLAYS) It's not where you come from It's where you belong Nothin' I would trade I wouldn't have it any other way You're surrounded By love and you're wanted So never feel alone You are home with me Right where you belong BOY: Wait so you didn't take the pictures? It's supposed to be a self-portrait.
Yeah, I, um I just thought there was something more I don't know, authentic? About capturing these unaware moments.
So, I asked my family to help me.
I mean, otherwise, I'm just so self-conscious.
BOY: Yeah, but that's the point! The whole idea behind self-portraiture is the expression of self-consciousness.
I mean, look at the work of Frida Kahlo, or Schiele, or even Cindy Sherman.
I mean, they use their discomfort with themselves.
I mean, I don't think this piece even knows what it wants to be.
Because the artist doesn't.
Casey don't be a dick.
Critique the work or keep your mouth shut.
Okay, everybody.
Let's keep our feedback constructive.
We need to give Callie a chance to defend her work.
I don't Well, in your admission interview, you're gonna have to, so think about it.
I called you, like, a million times.
I know.
I just I didn't want to do this over the phone.
But I don't think I can be with someone who's gonna lie to me.
I won't do it again.
I swear.
Yeah, well, it's not just that.
It's Maybe this is dumb, but it kinda feels like some video game is more important than me.
And I don't think that's the kind of boyfriend I want.
No, no, no.
It's it's not.
I I promise.
It's You're the most important thing to me.
Please.
Just give me another chance.
I won't lie to you again.
I swear I'll make time for us.
Okay.
JUDE: Hey! Oh.
Mariana let me in.
Um, Taylor? I know we were gonna play this afternoon, but is it okay if we do it tomorrow? Why? Well, I I just Noah and I haven't seen each other in a while, and um It's cool.
Whatever.
Thanks.
I'll text you later.
I honestly don't know where Dean went off to, but he'll be back soon.
Please have a seat.
Okay.
Thanks.
Yeah.
He He said 5:00, right? Yeah, yeah.
So, do you still keep in touch with anyone from high school? No.
Not really.
Well, I I see Tommy Hutchinson sometimes, since he's on the force.
You? Oh, no.
No, I um I lost touch with everyone when I moved to the east coast.
Ah.
Yep.
(CHUCKLING) Simon, that's right.
So, Jesus is exhausted.
He's been doing testing all day.
With his TBI, it's just a lot for him.
So, I told him he could go ahead and keep sleeping.
I hope it's okay.
- Of course, sweetheart.
- Absolutely.
Pass the asparagus, will ya? Yeah.
So, Callie, I understand you're taking college classes now.
It's just, um, art class.
Don't say "just.
" Don't diminish the importance of art.
Um Mom, where's that waterfall you told me about? Um, Aaron and I are gonna take a hike tomorrow.
Oh, Cedar Creek.
Yeah, it should be beautiful this time of year.
- I'll give you directions after dinner.
- Thank you.
Um, which reminds me.
I need the car.
No, I need the car.
I have to work.
Brandon you don't get first dibs because you're the oldest.
No, I get first dibs because I'm going to work.
Hey, Moms, we need another car.
- (LAUGHING) - We can't afford another car.
The only reason we have three cars is because Grandpa Frank gave us the Prius.
Y'all should count yourselves lucky that you have one car to share.
Pass the asparagus, would ya? I, uh, I already did, Grandpa.
- It's right here.
- Oh! (CHUCKLES) So you did.
There it is.
And how about you, young lady? You takin' over the world now? I'm trying, Grandpa.
(CHUCKLING) Any boys? - No.
- Um, what about Logan? He's the boy who moved in next door.
- Oh? - Oh! Yeah, no.
Uh, we're just friends.
He has a girlfriend.
Yeah.
Well, when, uh I met your grandmother, she had a boyfriend.
So, I became her friend, and then, when, uh, they broke up, she needed a shoulder to cry on.
And guess who was there? (CHUCKLES) JUDE: And guess who Logan's mother is.
Mom's first girlfriend.
She was my first crush.
That was all.
Trust me.
My father saw to that.
What does that mean? Oh, nothing.
Nothing.
Just one night, my father caught Tess and me cuddling on the couch, and, uh, so he sent me to church for "counseling.
" He did? That sucks.
Well, that's a shame.
Water under the bridge.
This um - This is - Asparagus, Grandpa.
Yeah, asparagus.
This it's delicious.
So, we're uh we're putting the house into a trust.
- Hmm.
- Oh? - Really? - Yeah.
Just, uh, to protect the kids.
Just in case anything happens.
- Well, that's smart.
- Thank you.
Which, you know, got us to thinking that, uh What? Um, maybe later.
So what else is going on with this big, beautiful bustling family? Well Jesus is engaged.
He's only going back to school because of this girl? That's absurd! Mom, we need something! Something that matters to him.
You have something that matters to him.
The treehouse! Maybe Jesus needs to actually do something to earn the privilege of building it.
Like getting an education.
Mom, if we take away that treehouse, he's only going to think we're punishing him, and then we will have a full-blown rebellion on our hands.
STEF: I agree.
If we use it as leverage, he's gonna hate us forever.
Oh! Daddy's asleep.
He had an early flight.
He's been He's been up since 4:30.
(CHUCKLES) What? (GIGGLES) How many songs do you think we need for a full set? Uh I don't know.
Like, maybe, ten or something like that.
But, you know, we don't have to write 'em all together either.
If you want, you can play, like, a solo or two if you want.
Is everything okay? (SIGHS) I caught Cort kissing Gabe last night.
Oh.
Is that weird for you? No.
I mean, you know, it's whatever.
I don't know.
I just worry about her.
She doesn't have the best taste in men.
Her ex is a total douche.
Well, she picked you.
Honey, I know that it's uncomfortable, but we really need to talk to your dad about getting his name off the title.
Right now? He's sleeping! And thanks a lot for bringing it up at dinner, by the way.
- I told you I needed to think about it.
- Hey, hey.
Then talk to your mom.
All right? Feel her out.
See what she thinks.
- Well, hello there.
- Hello.
You know, I was just thinking about what you said about your dad.
You know, when you came out.
I'm so sorry Frank treated you that way.
You know, uh when I found out Lena was gay, all I wanted to do was to make sure she knew how much I still loved her.
You know.
Took some getting used to.
I mean, it was such a surprise.
But uh she's my daughter.
And I think of you as my daughter, too.
And I'm so very proud of you.
(GASPS) So, Mom, uh there's something we wanted to talk to you guys about.
Uh about the house.
Um We just What I mean is How are you guys doing financially? We're fine, honey.
And I don't want you to worry, because I have taken over the finances so there won't be any more surprises.
But you know, I'm glad you You brought this up.
Your father and I have been talking about, well the money that he loaned you to buy the house.
If we had that money in our account, it would be accruing interest.
So, it only seems fair that you and Stef start paying us back something.
Whatever you think works.
You you want us to pay you interest on the loan for the house.
Mm-hmm.
Stef: It was a gift! It was never a loan.
And and now we're supposed to pay interest on it?! Great! Hey, well, then Then we're just We're gonna have to put your dad on the trust, then.
Well, at least my mom's taken over the finances, so we won't have to worry about him being reckless.
I-I will I will talk with Dean tomorrow.
(SIGHS) I just hope I don't end up in another awkward conversation with Tess.
I got stuck there for, like, half an hour today.
Absolutely nothing to talk about.
Why don't you talk about what happened in high school? It's clearly still bothering you.
Don't want to rehash old high school BS.
It's just I don't I it's ridiculous.
I'm not gonna do it.
D arm there.
What? Is that a surprise? Don't be sexist.
So, is your girlfriend still mad at you? (EXHALES) She's still not talking to me.
Women, man.
I mean You take one selfie with a cute girl at a party, then bam.
Shut down! Ooh.
I can, uh help you with that.
- You can? - Yeah, of course.
You just need a grand gesture.
Girls live for that stuff.
Okay .
but like what? Dream So, uh, how are you? Fine.
Everything's fine.
You sure you're still not mad at me about the whole P-SAC, free speech thing? No, no.
It's not that.
Just, um I had, like, a lousy day yesterday.
Um Got, like, ripped apart over my self-portrait.
Someone said my piece didn't know what it wanted to be, because I didn't.
Maybe they're right.
Um You know, maybe I don't have a voice as an artist.
Maybe I don't have anything to say.
(SIGHS) Maybe I just rushed in to taking this class to prove something to my moms.
R-really? I don't I don't wanna talk about this anymore.
I mean, we're on this beautiful hike.
I just wanna enjoy the moment.
So, who should we get for our third player? - We could do a rando, or - Hey! I, uh I thought we were hanging out.
Um, later.
I-I thought we were hanging out later.
- You said 1:00.
- I-I swear I said 2:00.
So, what, I'm just supposed to sit around and watch you make out or whatever? Are you for real right now? Taylor, no.
That that's not what I Damn it, guys.
Why do you keep putting me in this terrible position? I mean, what am I supposed to do? Well, you can ask Noah to leave for one thing, since I had to leave yesterday.
Well, if you ask me to leave then I'm never coming back.
(SCOFFS) You know what? You can both leave and never come back as far as I'm concerned.
(CAMERA CLICKS) How many times do we have to do this? About 20 times for each letter.
Twenty? Do you want to win her back or not? I'm not even sure this is gonna work.
Trust me, I know what girls want, so jump.
Hello, darling.
Hey, Grandma.
What's the matter? (SIGHS) My boyfriend and my best friend are both upstairs, and they won't stop fighting over who gets to spend time with me.
Aw.
Must be hard to be so wanted.
Come on, then.
Grandma? G-Grandma, what are you doing? Well, I had to leave yesterday, so, it's only fair that you leave this time.
Okay, but he's my boyfriend.
So, I understand you're having a scheduling challenge.
Now, I've seen many a friend through a divorce, and even seen a few custody battles in my day.
I'm not their child, Grandma.
No, of course not, but I've learned that the only way to navigate this kind of problem is to have a firm schedule in place.
- Okay.
- Now what I propose is this.
You get Monday, Wednesday and Friday of one week, and Tuesday and Thursday of the next.
And you get the opposite.
On Saturdays, you all hang out together.
What about Sundays? On Sundays, you rest, my boy.
You're going to need it.
Any questions, comments, concerns? No? Good.
Whoa.
- (LAUGHS) - Wow.
That's pretty nice, huh? Yeah.
You know, when I was young, I used to have dreams I could fly.
Like all the time.
It was awesome.
You could do anything, go anywhere.
I was completely free.
Now, when I have a flying dream I'm usually always running away from something, or someone is trying to hold me down.
I've never had a dream like that.
Well, at least not that I can remember.
What do you think's trying to hold you down? In your dreams? Well, you know what Carl Jung says.
"Everyone in your dreams is you," right? And in your heart I don't want to toot my own horn, but I just may have negotiated the greatest peace talks since Camp David.
Uh, where where's Daddy? He met an old friend for coffee.
He should be here anytime.
Um, so Dana, I guess, uh I guess we need to talk about this, uh, this interest on the house.
What exactly are you guys expecting? Whatever you think is fair.
Okay, well, I-I don't know.
Seeing as we always thought that the money Stewart put in the house was Lena's early inheritance.
It it's hard to say what's fair.
Stef, I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure the content of your conversation with Stewart, but I do know he considers it a loan.
Okay, here's how I know that that wasn't the case, Dana.
We wouldn't have bought the house.
We we never could have afforded to pay back you and the bank, and and (SIGHS) To be honest, I, uh, I don't think that Stewart's memory is what it was.
- Stef.
- What exactly are you implying? (EXHALES) Nothing.
How how about this? How about (SIGHS) How about we, uh, we draw up something with a lawyer? To arrange for a repayment plan.
Interest for now, and when we sell, the loan in full.
In exchange we would like to take Stewart off the title.
Dana, we cannot risk another lien.
Well um, I don't know, uh I have to discuss this with your father.
- (DOOR OPENS) - STEWART: Anybody home? Hi.
Where are the kids? Come out! I wanna show you something.
What do ya think? I got it for the kids so that they wouldn't have to bicker all the time.
You got us a car?! - (CHUCKLING) - (GASPS) Thank you.
Daddy, we can't accept this.
Why not? You took a car from Frank.
Because we can't afford to pay for it.
We're barely making ends meet as it is.
Oh, don't worry.
I'm making good money.
And that bonus is coming in.
No, it's not.
You're retired, love.
Okay, whoa.
Easy.
(EXCLAIMS) Ah! Wow.
I You Your mom was right.
This is about the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
What? Oh.
- Wait.
Are you serious? - Uh-huh.
Oh, yeah.
- You really wanna do this? - Yeah.
I Um (NERVOUS CHUCKLE) It just looks a little - Cold.
No, I - Amazing? Um - (SHRIEKS) - Oh.
You coming? Yeah.
Hurry! - It's cold! - Okay.
I'm coming.
(YELLS) Oh, my god! (LAUGHING) We need to get Stewart's name off the title.
We'll sign whatever you need.
We can We we can pay back the money with interest.
No.
You shouldn't have to do that.
Knowing my husband, I'm sure that, at the very least, things were vague.
Still.
You're you're probably gonna need money.
You know, for care, for him.
We Please.
We want to help.
Please let us.
Thank you.
How long has this been going on, Mom? About a year or so.
There's just some things you don't want to talk about, you know.
Just doesn't make them go away.
(SIGHS, SNIFFS) I am so not ready for this.
I'm not ready to lose him.
A picture on your shelf They came to get the car? Yeah.
- Sorry we couldn't keep it, Dad.
- Yeah.
Come, sit.
Something's been bothering me.
You remember when you came out, and I said, "I still love you.
" - Yeah? - Yeah, that was terrible.
That was a terrible thing to say.
- But - Well, I mean "Still love you.
" What is that? I still love you in spite of the fact you're gay? What That's just wrong.
I mean, my love for you has never changed.
Not one bit.
And what I should've said was, "I'm very proud you know who you are.
"And I can't wait to meet the person you choose to share your life with.
" You remember when I was little? How you would how you would sit and watch cartoons with me? (BOTH LAUGHING) Yeah.
Every morning.
No matter how badly you needed to get to work.
That was our time.
And now that I have, uh, a job, and I have kids of my own I can't help but think how hard that must have been.
Thank you for that.
And you know, for just being a really good dad.
How am I supposed to go Whoa.
Come on.
You should be more careful with these.
Someone could get hurt, like Mason.
- Sorry.
- Listen.
About the other night, I I mean, I-I didn't know you still had feelings for Cort.
No, I don't, I don't.
It's not that, okay? I just And be more careful, or otherwise Mason's gonna end up with a nail in his head like Jesus.
It's dangerous with all this shit lying around here.
Hey.
- What's going on? - Nothing.
Seems that Brandon here is a little mad.
What? No! I told you! I'm fine! It's fine! Okay? It's whatever.
Cortney, do whatever you want.
Fall in love, get married, have another baby.
Why not? Aaron: So you really think you don't know who you are? Because I don't, like, at all.
I see someone who ferociously knows who she is, and what she believes.
I mean, seriously.
Think about it.
When you're fighting for someone else, like Kyle.
I mean, you never waver.
So, why can't you find that belief in yourself? Um, I don't know.
I'm not like you.
You're so sure of yourself.
I just keep thinking that I should know everything.
Who I am, what I want, what life's supposed to be like, and it's just making me crazy that I don't.
And so, when someone doubts me, I just crumble.
Hey.
I get it.
But the truth is no one knows the entirety of who they are.
And if they say they do, they're either lying or really, really lame.
I guess all I need to know today is who I am and what I want right now.
What I want right now is this.
Me too.
Maybe we should go back to your place.
(POP MUSIC PLAYING) You make me fly, baby.
You're the only one for me.
That looks pretty cool.
Told ya.
Upload that to your Insta, and she'll be calling you before she even finishes watching it.
Trust.
I was coming out here to say sorry.
Please don't go.
I should.
It's for the best.
Your family's been more than generous.
Cort, your place isn't ready till next week.
Look, the truth is, I I was caught off-guard seeing you with Gabe.
Okay? I didn't know what to think or how to feel.
I still don't.
I You know, I get it.
Seeing you with Grace was definitely weird for me, too.
And I started freaking out about it, and then I realized, isn't that just normal? To feel a little bit jealous when your ex moves on? Really, does it have to mean anything more than that? It's not like it means you and I want to get back together.
Right? Or that we should? What I finally figured out is I just want you to be happy.
Well, me me too.
I mean it.
You should kiss whoever you want.
But I do think I have to go.
Honestly, I shouldn't be kissing anyone right now.
I should be focused on my kid, and being a good mom, and getting my life together.
But thank you.
Really, for everything.
You're a good man, Brandon Foster.
Found 'em! Oh, well, looks like the time has come.
- I love you, Dad.
- I love you too, sweet pea.
See you soon, okay? We'll watch some cartoons for old times' sake.
Hmm? Here.
Take these.
Hey.
Jude: Is Grandpa all right? We don't know, love.
But we're gonna find out, all right? You okay? You just never think it's gonna happen to your parents, you know.
So, we didn't, um, just drift apart in high school, and I didn't dump you because I I got new friends.
Um, I I had feelings for you.
Romantic feelings.
And I don't know if you remember this, um, maybe you do, maybe you don't.
That time that my father caught us cuddling on the couch.
Do you yeah? Uh Well, he sent me to our church.
Talked to the youth minister.
Get my head on straight, so to speak.
And um, after that, maybe I was just embarrassed and ashamed.
I didn't know what else to do, but to distance myself.
Okay, if you had those feelings back in high school, why did you marry Mike? I guess because I thought I was supposed to.
And you know, I'm happy with the way things are now, but I-I know that I caused Mike a lot of pain.
And I-I'm afraid that I hurt you too, and for that I want to apologize.
I was.
I was hurt when you suddenly cut me out.
But you know what, it was a long time ago.
And honestly, it wasn't that big a deal.
I mean, it's not like I had those feelings for you, so, you know.
Yeah, of course.
Good.
- Wait.
- Is everything okay? Yeah.
Just one second.
All that I think about Is your loving me Yeah, anyway you want me baby Anyway you want me, I'm doing this for you You love me Such a good feeling You give me Such a good feeling (KNOCKING) - Yeah? - Hey.
So, um, I've been thinking.
You should, uh, you should throw your dad's engagement party here.
Really? Um, I mean, are you sure about that? Yeah, I'm happy he's found someone.
And it's the least I can do.
GRACE: No, no, no.
Whenever you call me, we always get into a fight.
That's why I never wanna answer your phone calls.
No! No, I'm fine.
No, you do not need to come to Hold on, let me call you back.
Someone's at my door.
Oh.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Uh, everything okay? Yeah, just my mom doing her overprotective thing again.
Uh, what are you doing here? Uh, nothing, nothing.
I just, you know, thought of you and wanted to give you this.
(BOTH GIGGLING) Choc-olatte! This is my favorite.
I know.
So, it worked.
- It did? - Yeah.
I just got off the phone with her.
She was, like, totally crying.
- Oh my God, yay! - (LAUGHS) Well, thank you.
You're a good friend.
Uh, so listen do you have any plans next Saturday? It's prom, and I'm going with a group of friends, and I was thinking, you know, since you don't really know that many people, maybe you'd wanna come with us? Yeah, that sounds great, but, um, Olivia's actually here that weekend.
So, maybe, we could, like, all go? Yeah! I do think - we could all go.
- Yeah? Yeah, that'd be fun.
Sweet! All right, see ya.
(PHONE BEEPS, VIBRATES) (PHONE BEEPS, VIBRATES) Like a Roman Candle in your face We're blowing up And when we do, you'll know we do it just because We got fire It's burnin' higher Wha ? Oh my (LAUGHING) (PHONE RINGING) - Hey.
- Oh my god! You're never gonna believe this.
We just got an invite from this NEW GAME: "Eminent Power.
" They want us to be, like, ambassadors, or influencers, or whatever for them.
They saw our videos and they want to pay us to play the game.
So so what do we have to do? Uh, it says, uh, uh, I just, I'm supposed to call them if we're interested.
And and we are right? We're Um, yeah.
O-Okay.
Okay, let me call them, and then I I'll call you back.
(PHONE BEEPING) - (LINE RINGING) - (EXHALES) - Wade Richards.
- Uh, yeah, uh, yeah! My name is Jude Adams-Foster.
I got an email asking if we want to be ambassadors for you guys, and the answer is yes.
Duh! Uh, "we" who? Uh, me and my friend, Taylor.
GIRLandGAYGUY.
That that's us.
Oh, yeah.
Uh, your friend is great.
Uh, but this This doesn't apply to her.
We already have plenty of girl gamers, we're just looking for some gaymers.
You know, "g-a-y mers.
" Wait, you didn't tell your friend, did you? Does anybody have any questions, or anything they'd like to share? Yeah, um I just, uh, wanted to say sorry if I seemed a little defensive the other day.
Um See, here's the thing.
I was a foster kid.
So, I've been so many different girls, and been in so many different homes.
Um And the truth is, I don't know who I am.
