The Secret Daughter (AU) (2016) s01e06 Episode Script

Risk It

1 - My name's Jack.
- Billie Carter.
25 years ago, I had a daughter.
Never met her.
You'd have been the perfect secret daughter.
- Whoa.
- Oh, um - My fault.
- Let me, um - It's just soda water.
- I didn't mean to I know I was always a bit freaky, but there was that something when we met.
I mean, not like it was a thing.
- Oh, god, no.
- More like 'hey, sis'.
Yeah.
They want to reintroduce live music to Jack's Bar.
- Sounds like a great idea to me.
- Are you insane? I'll look after it like it's my own.
You know what.
I've only got a fifth of the say now, so do what you want.
I'm outnumbered anyway.
Jack lives through you, Billie.
Do it for him.
Yeah.
Usually it's pretty boring around here.
I think you might be good for us sis.
When you have a chance, can we talk? I don't know if this is the best time.
What you've tried to do for her has been amazing.
- LAYLA: You're okay with us? - BILLIE: Yeah, why wouldn't I be? - He's your brother.
- No, it's cool.
Go for it.
I could say thank you a million times and it still wouldn't be enough.
I don't know how to tell you this.
That DNA test, I swapped the samples.
So it was my DNA they tested, not yours.
Billie, come back.
Billie, just stop for a second.
HARRIET: Billie are you okay with me? What were you even thinking? I wasn't trying to mess everything up.
I was trying to help.
- Who knows? - Nobody.
- It's okay, I'll tell the family.
- No, don't.
I'm gonna tell them all that it was me.
You can't say anything.
You gotta give me a minute to figure this out.
I guess it means if you really like Jamie, you two - It's not about that.
- Well, I feel like crap.
Same thanks to you.
Harriet - Well, at least the truth's out now.
- Extraordinary.
Nick, however we have to do this, I want her gone from The Norton and out of my daughter's life.
Agreed.
But let's just step back for a moment.
Why? Billie might have a case if she can argue that Harriet wilfully misled her into the belief that she was Jack's daughter.
- A case for what? - Exposure to ridicule and embarrassment resulting in substantial damages.
She does not get a cent out of this.
Understood? If Billie were to decide to make a clean break from the family, with no hard feelings on either side, then any avenues she may have for redress would be significantly reduced.
(DOOR OPENS) Harry.
- It also get Harriet off the hook.
- (DOOR SHUTS) None of this can come within an inch of my daughter.
Understood? Agreed.
So, does Billie jump or is she pushed? In this case, better if she can be persuaded to jump.
Step away from the computer.
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
You know, all the staff management literature says the only way you and I can work is if I fire you.
(SCOFFS) I mean, that would mean losing a very significant asset.
- Wow, that's so flattering.
- God, I hope so.
I mean, obviously I'm gonna have to you know Looks like you have some tricky decisions ahead of you.
Mm.
- Chris.
- Yeah? We could have a problem.
- The finishing touch.
- Yeah.
It's all good, love.
Live music back at The Norton.
Your father, he would have been over the moon.
So, we no longer have a headliner for the launch tomorrow night.
He said he had to go back to Melbourne.
Call me a stickler for detail, - but if you'd had something in writing - He'd still have to go back.
Invites, press, open bar we're down before we even open the doors to a no-show.
Oh, and that's right, I'm forgetting the world's most expensive sound system.
Look, once with Jack, we'd booked Sammy Davis Jnr.
He was sick, so we got Sammy Salvatore from Bankstown.
He killed it.
Leaving this with you, little brother.
So, headlining, opening night Jack Norton's super talented long-last daughter.
- Billie.
- No impossible.
Not gonna happen.
We gotta take some risks, otherwise we're dead in the water.
100% all because of your stuff-up.
Bill? - Look, I'll do it.
- Yes! Come here.
Oh, you champion.
You won't regret it.
This is it, Bill.
All your little chooks are in a row.
- Are what? - I don't know.
But it's your big break.
And me, I'm just here to pack up my stuff.
- Are you moving in with Jamie? - Don't judge me.
- No, I'm not.
- I mean, I know it's super speedy.
- You hardly know him.
- And I hardly know him, but, Bills You're really into this fella, aren't you? I mean, I never seen you like this.
Yeah, it's so different.
Are you pleased? Of course I am.
- It's wonderful.
- Oh, this is unreal! We both get what we want.
You got the gig, I got the guy.
(DOOR OPENS) What are you still doing here? Just an endless search for love and affection in a pitiless world.
- Yourself? - Clearing my stuff from the bathroom.
(WHISPERS) Where's she going? I don't believe this is my only option, but you and me, we have to talk.
- You want to order up a feed? - No.
I need fresh air.
So, that's a definite, right, hey? You're definitely not a Norton? Not even close.
It just looks like I'm stockpiling all these fellas that aren't my father, one after the other.
Hang on, you still got old Gus around.
Anyway, I'm finished.
It's over now.
That's right.
Who needs these freaks? We want to move on, let's move on.
Except I was just starting to feel like I belonged.
Look, we don't owe 'em nothin'.
Dad, I owe Jamie everything.
He got us out of trouble.
Paid your debt, got me out of jail.
He's been with me every step of the way.
Maybe he just did that because he thought you were his sister.
It wasn't just that.
What? What, kid? Maybe it was.
But if he knows I'm not, then maybe he Maybe I'd I don't know what would happen.
And Layla she's happy.
It's great.
It's really great.
And I don't want to mess with that.
So don't.
Look, what have I always said every time we were in a really tough situation? You'd say, "Let's get outta here.
" That's right.
You're bigger than this place, kid.
You belong to the world.
(DOOR OPENS) - Hey.
- Hey.
- Are you okay? - Mm.
Something to do with Billie? No.
Why? It's just the two of you are so close.
Billie's good.
As far as I know.
- Anyway - Hey, what do you say we make a deal? Let's just put all of the past behind us.
Everything's wiped, okay? Clean slate.
Sure.
Are we still friends, Harry? - Best ever.
- You know, you can tell me anything.
- I know.
Anything.
- Mm.
He's coming, Shane Finney, record producer.
Used to drink here all the time in the old days.
Yeah, what about him? He's coming tomorrow night to hear you sing.
Carmine pulled some strings.
- Isn't that amazing? - You reckon? If we can convince guys like Shane that Jack's Bar is the kind of place industry players hang out and listen to new talent, we've got a real future here.
Don't you think we should be going for something a little bit low key first-up? What, and no one comes? That's a plan.
Trust somebody who knows.
Shane's gonna love you to bits, Billie.
Come on, let's go down and rehearse.
You should do one of your own songs.
No, Jamie, they're not even finished yet.
All right, all right, we'll start with the covers, and once you've found your groove, then we'll get into your original material.
You coming? Sure.
(SINGS) Talking like we used to do It was always me and you Shaping up and shipping out Check me in and check me out Do you like walking in the rain? When you think of love, do you think of pain? You can tell me what you see I will choose what I believe Hold on, darling This body is yours This body is yours and mine Well hold on, my darling This mess was yours Now your mess is mine Oh, no.
Look, I can do that better.
What are you talking about? That was beautiful.
It's just a rehearsal in an empty room.
Now you need an audience.
Hey the first time I saw you in Walperinga pub, it wasn't only your voice.
It was everything about you, Bill.
Believe me, you can be anything you want.
Own it, girl.
You're amazing.
So, what, I should just do it that way tomorrow? Here's what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna get on the phone to Dan and Shorty.
Why? Because if you're gonna smash it tomorrow night, you need the old line-up backing you onstage.
We'll get Cardiac Arrest.
It's a great idea, hey? Why not? Billie is your headline act opening night? It'll be a great showcase for her and the bar.
We need to get back to it.
Bill's gonna be huge one day.
I mean, really huge.
- Have you seen Harriet? - Not since earlier.
Why? One of the porter's saw her leaving the building about an hour ago.
- Where was she going? - I hoped you'd tell me.
She's been in a bad mood all day.
Is she okay? I don't know.
Hey rehearsal? Billie? Um, I gotta go, sis.
Billie! Where are you going? - Oi we need to rehearse.
- I've gotta find Harriet.
- Are you in denial? - About what? Your talent or something.
I don't know.
- I'm not in denial.
- Well, then, think of Jamie.
You can't do this.
You can't walk out on him after everything he's done for you.
Do you have any idea how much this matters to him? - I know.
- Well, then, why? I've upset Harriet.
She's taken off and I think I know where she is.
That's her mother's job.
Harriet? Have you come to shout at me again? No.
You told me to tell the truth, so I did, and now you won't talk to me.
Harriet, I'm standing right here talking to you.
Hey.
All that's gonna do is make you throw up.
Do you really want to go home with vomit through your hair? For God's sakes, Harriet, just think about what you've done.
Okay.
Yeah.
So what do you want me to about it? Say nothing? I don't know what you want.
Me? I'd like to rewind three weeks, to the day before any of this happened.
You don't think that's what I want? God, anybody realise, hello my father is dead and I'm supposed to have closure after, what, a couple of weeks? And what is so bad, in the circumstances, about wanting a friend? Or a big sister? Someone that I could be around.
I'm sorry that turned out to be you.
Hey I'm glad it was me.
I am.
(SIGHS) Oh, everything appears to be in order.
- Stock-wise.
- (SCOFFS, LAUGHS) Well, I'm relieved.
You know, I do like to stay on the right side of management.
Mm.
Can I kiss you? Hmm, not if you're gonna ask, no.
You know, in a way I'm still kinda surprised about this.
Why? It was only a matter of time, right? Was it? Why did we take so long? Because we were waiting for Billie to tell us it was okay.
Ah, Billie.
Well, thank you, Billie.
(LAUGHS) Well, ahem I'm through here.
Is there someplace that we could talk in private? - Mm.
- Mm-hm.
Follow me.
Excellent.
Yeah, I just want to get the whole family behind this place.
Restructure it so that everyone's involved.
And then we can really make our mark.
You know, somewhere Dad would have wanted.
(SIGHS) And how are you planning on doing that? Sorry, this probably isn't the best time to be talking business models.
No, this is fascinating.
(LAUGHS) - Really? - (BOTH LAUGH) I want to be here, Chris and I know that you do too, so you just stop overthinking things so we can actually just, you know, be together.
You bought into that whole daughter thing too big-time.
Yeah, I did.
That's why I'm pissed off with myself for being so dumb.
What do you want to do? Fess up and disappoint everyone or keep living a lie, either way I'm gonna let people down.
I'm not gonna tell anyone.
Not till you say it's okay.
Thanks.
You know Jamie's got a thing for you.
I've seen the way he looks at you.
I mean, I've known this whole time he's not your brother.
If he knew, you and him, he'd be so up for it.
You done yet? 'Cause nothing's gonna happen.
It doesn't matter anyway.
- Liar.
- Look, stop making this about me.
This is about you making up with your mother.
You should call her 'cause she's real worried about you.
You took a bullet for me.
I can't see my mother ever stepping up for that.
- Hey, she cares.
- You reckon? - Is she here? - Why would she be? She's grieving too, but you never let her in.
It works both ways, Harriet.
Let's get you home.
(DOOR OPENS) Darling, where have you been? I've been so worried.
Harry was in the botanic gardens.
It's where she and her father used to hang out sometimes.
Oh.
Really? Billie, I'm so grateful to you for all the care you've shown Harry.
You really make all the difference.
My pleasure.
She hates me, of course.
If she could spend every day with you, that'd be a different story.
She's just hurting.
We all are.
But at least she'll talk to you.
Which is a good thing.
You're half-sisters, you should be talking.
I'd really appreciate it if you could encourage Harry to just let me in a little bit more.
Yeah, I can try, but We're a dysfunctional apology of a family, but it's what we have.
Yep.
I should get back to rehearsals.
- There she is.
- Did you find her? Yeah, she's all right.
As for me Trust me, you'll be great.
I hope so.
I'm gonna get some sleep.
Mm.
Hey, we'll work on your songs tomorrow, yeah? Yeah.
And think about what you'd like to wear for the set.
- I'd love to help style you.
- Sure.
- Okay, sleep.
- You too.
Here she is.
How you - Hey.
- (BILLIE WHIMPERS) (TRAFFIC NOISE, HORNS HONK) - How are you this morning? - Good.
Thank you.
So, is this the part where you tell your mum it was the first time you ever had too much to drink? Harry, you're 16.
I don't ask or expect you to tell me everything.
But I'd really appreciate it if you didn't go running off into the night without telling me where you're going.
Why would you want to know? I mean, you've always let me do my own thing.
I'd love for us to do more things together.
You don't have to spend all day, every day, with Billie.
She's the best thing that's ever happened to this family.
It's not a competition.
It's just easier with Billie.
We have way more in common.
Thanks.
I just mean like our ages are closer together.
We like the same stuff music and things.
And you can talk.
Well I'd like to be able to talk.
I'd like that too.
I'd better get dressed.
Hey.
I thought you might like a coffee.
- Oh - Oh, and a muffin.
It's blueberry, I think.
- Thank you very much.
- My pleasure.
I just want to say, about last night - Oh consider it said.
- No, no, please.
I was wondering if you would like to come along to the opening of Jack's Bar tonight.
As me? Vivienne Hart one of your employees? I don't really think it matters, does it? No not to me.
Well, I better get back to it.
Me too.
Hey, we gonna have some breakfast? Where you going? Uh rehearsing.
Oh, listen, about tonight, you know, I want to say I'm proud of you, all right? No, listen, I'm proud of you, Bill, all right? Always was.
Always will be.
Look, I don't think I can hack this anymore.
Come here.
Sit.
Sit down.
Now, listen, this is what's gonna happen.
You're gonna hang in there till you finish your set.
And then, after you finish your set, that record producer's gonna sign you up.
And then no one's gonna give a rat's whether your name is Norton, Noddy or Nooky.
'Cause you'll have a career.
At least I'll have one fan.
But only for the rest of your life.
Everybody's hurting sometimes Everybody's hurting sometimes Gotta risk it all Mm-mm Who said Billie Carter songs aren't ready? Work in progress.
Hey, with you and Layla, I'm really pleased for you both.
I'm pleased for us both.
Look, she's heaps of fun and you guys will make each other very happy.
- Billie Carter - Check it out.
- say hello to your band.
- Billie! (LAYLA LAUGHS) Cardiac Arrest are in town! Oh, good to see you fellas.
- Dan.
- Billie.
Thanks for coming out, you mob.
- You couldn't keep us away.
- JAMIE: You guys are gonna smash it.
Oh, this place has it all over Walperinga pub.
I haven't had to punch someone in the face once.
- (LAUGHTER) - Just joking - Hardly a gig, then.
- ahem, sort of.
Hey.
Dan.
Good to see you.
Maybe we can go somewhere to chat.
(PHONE RINGS) Hello, Susan.
I was just wondering if you could pop up and see me.
The show tonight, I'd really like to help, if I could.
Thanks, but I'll be fine.
No, I really want to.
All right, I'll come up.
Bye.
Darling, where are you going? I'll stay in the building.
(DOOR SHUTS) So you're sleeping with that Layla chick, huh? Jeez, no secrets here.
She's kinda slack, don't you think? Excuse me? Well, she's had a dream run so far.
"Hi, I'm Layla" one week, and then she's living in your room? I'd say that's pretty cluey.
Oh, you would would you? Yeah, you and I have our moments, but you're still a catch.
Billie needs someone too.
Her ex is back, eh? Well, everyone reckons he's a nob.
You're getting kinda judgemental, aren't you? I'm just telling it like it is.
Harry you're a weird kid.
Hey! I just wanted to wish you luck for tonight.
I know you'll be wonderful.
Thank you.
Hair and make-up? I can have someone come over.
No, I'm good for hair and make-up.
Well, if there is anything at all I can do, you just let me know.
That's very kind.
Billie, I know we've had our differences.
It was very difficult for me to learn that my husband had fathered a child I knew nothing about.
- I understand that.
- Not your fault, of course.
But then, when everything came out at the memorial and Susan, I'm sorry if I.
Look, I've thought long and hard about this and I've realised that we owe it to Jack to your father to move forward together as a family.
I really value everything you've brought to us and I want tonight to be the start of better things.
I just need you to know that I never want to let the family down.
I'm sure you won't.
This is all right.
(LAUGHS) Look at the view.
Hey, has Jamie found you and Shorty a room for tonight? Yeah, but twin share.
And Layla's cleaned out the minibar for some reason.
I mean, I don't know what that's all about.
- You're guests, all right.
- Oh, come on.
It's good to see you again, Bee.
- You too.
- I missed you heaps.
You sacked me and kicked me out of the band.
Yes, but Hey, come on, we had some good times, though.
You can't tell me that you don't miss those times down by the river in Walperinga? - I'm not going back.
- Why not? You could get your old job back at the bakery.
We could pick things up.
A lot of things have happened.
- Seriously? - I've changed.
Are you sure you're not just confused? Maybe a little.
But I'm still not going back.
I'm sorry.
There's your, mate.
- How good is this? - Good crowd.
So far.
Jamie here's our man.
I'll get this to Billie.
Here we go.
G'day.
Jamie.
- Shane.
- Good to meet you.
From Jamie and me for tonight.
What's this? Well, you gotta open it.
(LAUGHS) Wow.
Are you sure about this, sis? If you're gonna put yourself out there, you gotta be out there.
Thank you.
You mean the world to me.
And you deserve every success that's coming your way after tonight.
Uh you better get out there.
Take care of your man.
(ROCK'N'ROLL MUSIC PLAYS) (LOW LEVEL CONVERSATIONS) (SIGHS) You gotta risk it all, risk it all, risk it You got the dress.
Thank you.
Hey, you and me, we're really gonna do this, sis.
I guess we are.
Here, mate.
Old times.
You gotta pay for it.
- How are you, Gus? - Great! You know, I think all I ever wanted was to honour my dad's name.
I know you barely got to know him, but you connected.
Yep, we did.
I'm so glad you got to meet him.
Anyway, tonight is about you and Jack's Bar, not me.
Um, Jamie, it's about us and what you've done so I could be here.
You're gonna do this and you're gonna be great.
- Is she okay? - I think so.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great privilege to welcome you all to the Norton Hotel and let you know that from tonight, Jack's Bar is back in business.
(CROWD CHEERING) In the coming weeks, it is our intention to bring you the very best new talent.
And what better way to bring Jack's Bar back on the road again than a set from the late and great Jack Norton's very own daughter, Billie Carter! (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) WOMAN: Come on, Billie.
MAN: Come on, Billie.
Tough girl In the fast lane No time for love No time for hate No drama No time for games Tough girl Ooh I'm at home On my own Check my phone Nothing though Act busy Order in Pay TV It's agony I may cry, ruining my make-up Wash away all the things you've taken And I don't care if I don't look pretty Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking I may cry, ruining my make-up Wash away all the things you've taken And I don't care if I don't look pretty Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) Thank you.
Shane, I'd like you to meet Billie Carter.
- Pleasure to meet you.
- Some good songs.
So what do you think? She's pretty amazing, huh? What's to say? You have a voice, but you sing covers that I've heard a thousand times.
If Billie really wants to make it, she needs to do her own material.
There's no point otherwise.
Billie's got some great new songs.
She'll debut them after the break.
Then I look forward to hearing them.
(LAUGHS NERVOUSLY) I'm sorry, you'll have to excuse me.
Don't don't even say it.
- Tell me what's wrong.
- Nothing.
I'm just trying to get through this.
Billie, you've got to do one of your songs.
Tonight could make you.
Please, this isn't about some song I've written.
Then what's the problem? Tell me.
I promise you, Billie, there is nothing you and I can't fix.
It's what I'm here for.
Jamie Hey.
You all right, Bill? Yeah, I'm fine.
Just give me a moment.
It's all good.
All right.
Catch your breath.
Then I'm coming back to see if you're okay.
Yeah.
Darlin', you are not kidding anyone.
You are so ready to go out there and be great.
- I'll see you out there? - Yeah.
Jamie.
You were right.
I think we have possibilities here.
Cheers.
It's good to see you, Vivienne.
It's good to be here.
Ladies and gentlemen, back at Jack's Bar for the second time tonight, Billie Carter! (CHEERING, APPLAUSE, WHISTLING) Thank you.
Uh, this next song I'd like to sing is a song I wrote, and it's called 'Risk It'.
Hope you like it.
- MAN 2: Go, Billie! - Whoo-hoo! Na, na, na, na-na Na, na, na, na Mm-mm Na, na, na-na You don't know what you don't know when you're good like that You can get the love you want when you get like that And you don't get the one without the other Keep digging through the pain to find your lover So don't forget now everybody's hurting sometimes Everybody's hurting sometimes You gotta risk it all, risk it all Everybody's crying sometimes Everybody's crying sometimes You gotta risk it all That's what it takes to know - That's my girl.
That's Billie.
- To feel love You gotta risk it all, risk it all Yeah, na, na, na-na You gotta risk it all, risk it all, risk it Mmm You gotta risk it all, risk it all, risk it So don't forget now everybody's hurting sometimes Everybody's hurting sometimes You gotta risk it all, risk it all Everybody's crying sometimes Everybody's crying sometimes You gotta risk it all That's what it takes To know To feel love You gotta risk it all That's what it takes To know To feel love You gotta risk it all, risk it all (CHEERING AND APPLAUSE) Thank you, everyone, for your support.
And that's a talent with a future.
Excuse me.
Oh my god, that was awesome.
You were amazing.
Thank you so much, Jamie.
Um I'm sorry, Jamie.
Billie, that was incredible.
Well done.
You were fantastic.
- Remember what I said.
You killed it.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
- Billie call me.
- Thank you.
Billie, I just wanted to say well done for tonight.
You're doing the family proud.
The DNA was Harriet's.
Jack Norton wasn't my father.
I'm not even related to you.
I have no right to be here.
LAYLA: What's happening? I don't know.
- Are you all right? - Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
Okay, well, Dan wants to keep playing and do the Cardiac Arrest thing.
That's a good idea.
Okay.
My main concern is how the boys will react to this, especially Jamie.
He's so invested in you as a sister.
BILLIE: Susan, I have to go.
You're welcome to stay.
Of course you are.
Where will you go? I dunno.
Wherever the train takes me.
(PHONE DIALS) What are you doing? Why aren't you with Billie? - Where is she? - I faked the DNA test.
- What? - Billie isn't your sister.
You should have been with her the whole time.
Susan, have you seen Billie? - Yes.
But she's gone.
- Where? She said something about flying to Melbourne.
What? I'm coming too.
No.
You've done enough.
Has she gone for good? Oh, darling, it would appear so.
BILLIE: Pinch me, am I still breathing? Billie, pick up your phone, please.
I trace your figure with my hands (RING TONE) Hang on, the words you're speaking I've never known this feeling Your moves have got me in a trance And I don't mind at all Come closer, come closer Heaven only finds me here with you In this moment, this moment Loving you is all I want to do Too much is not enough You let go when I need your touch again Come closer, come closer Heaven only finds me here Hey, it's Billie.
I'm not here at the moment so please leave a message after the beep - and I'll get back to you.
- (BEEP!) Billie, don't leave yet.
Not before hearing me out.
Whether you're my sister or not, I don't want you to go.
- Took your time.
- I had to pack me bag.
- You're coming? - You want me to? Of course.
Oh, oh, oh LAYLA: Jamie, what happened? Where's Bill? - She's flying to Melbourne.
- Why? Heaven only finds me here with you - What's going on? - I'll explain later.
This moment loving you is all I want to do - Billie! - Too much is not enough You let go when I need your touch again Come closer, come closer Heaven only finds me The world's at our feet, bub.
Like it always was.
