The Battles, Part 4
1 It's the final night of the battles at universal studios Hollywood, and Gwen is the only coach with a steal left.
It's so hard.
The grass is always greener.
Like, another one's gonna come.
No matter what you do, you will end up kicking yourself.
If you take a steal on the next battle, you'll be upset later.
Mm-hmm.
And if you wait till later, you'll be upset that you didn't use your steal earlier.
Daly: While our coaches head to their chairs, let's meet pharrell's last battle pairing of the season.
21-year-old Brittany Butler from Boston, Massachusetts, versus 19-year-old Ricky Manning from cape coral, Florida.
Brittany was introduced to jazz as a young girl by her late grandfather, and she always knew music was in her future.
Being awarded that full-tuition scholarship to berklee was everything.
The girl from ipanema goes walking and when she passes, each one she passes goes daly: Her unique audition turned two chairs.
We're both slightly weirdos.

After graduating high school, New York street musician Ricky Manning gave himself one year to pursue a career in music.
Know now can you love me again? I told you once again daly: Ricky's energetic performance convinced pharrell and Blake to push their buttons.

Brittany: When I walked in and saw Alicia keys, I was like, "oh, my God!" Her album "songs in a minor" was one of the soundtracks to my childhood.
It was so crazy.
I put you guys together 'cause you're like major r&B soul, like, scary.
Really? Thank you.
And you're like major, like, jazzy, scary, whoa.
[ Chuckles .]
This song is very unique.
I gave them "on Broadway" by George Benson.
They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway I think the song is great because it's about how hard it is to make it in the music industry.
they say there's always magic in the air And they can bring two really interesting takes to this song.
They say there's always magic in the air Ricky: Brittany went to one of the best music schools in the country, so I got a little nervous.
We're just kind of opposite.
God, I love your tone so much.

What I say to both of you guys is, feel.
And I think I want you to learn it in the way that George sang it, but I want to know who Ricky is.
And the same with you.

I know it's a little out of your box, but it kind of isn't because it's jazzy.

Alicia: The precision is really important.
Hit every note, and then when you choose to kind of veer, you know Di-ime When you start doing that type of swag on it, that's money.
Then there's another part of this layering of this song that's about life.

This song is about this guy moved to New York and he's struggling and suddenly it clicked in my head I moved to New York, and I did this.
I can definitely relate.

Daly: With their battle fast approaching, Brittany and Ricky meet with pharrell and his adviser, Alicia keys, for a final rehearsal with the band.

Alicia: Towards the end, there's a very specific scatting part There we go.
That fits really perfectly in Brittany's world.
Mm, yeah Ricky, on the other hand He doesn't really feel comfortable scatting.
Do you have a nickname? Uh, no.
When you scat, it sounds like skittles to me.
You're like, "okay, cool, time to unplug.
" [ Chuckles .]
And you just it's just skittles.
And then you can't get sheepish when she starts to do that.
Alicia: You don't need to scat.
You know on Broadway Yeah.
You'll find it.
Can we jazz it out a little bit more? Little bit of jazz, little bit of r&B.
They say the women treat you fine on Broadway Yeah! Brittany is a great jazzy personality.
There's no one like her in this competition.
I'll catch a greyhound bus for home they all say I think Ricky's voice is super soulful.
He should use that to his benefit.

While your operating systems, if you will, are completely different, the person that just lets go is probably the one that I'll have to go with 'cause both of you guys are great singers.
Ricky: Winning this battle will prove to myself that I was right in taking a year off to do music professionally.
Brittany: I'm going to school for an opportunity like this.
This is everything that I've worked towards.

Daly: Coming up, Ricky and Brittany give a showstopping performance I won't quit till I'm a star This is super tough for me.

Yeah! Yeah, Ricky! This battle begins right now.

I mean, just your whole facial expressions and Brittany, I thought you were really good.
You ramped up to the end.
You did a great job just being tasteful.
Ricky, your voice is really, really beautiful.

Brittany, I feel like this was definitely on par with what we heard before, so, you know, you're great.
Ricky, I think I-I saw a huge leap from then to now, and as a coach, that's what we like to see.

If he saw you on the street, I feel like he'd be like, "is that me?" [ Laughter .]
I'd go with Ricky because I just saw, like, a vast improvement.

Ricky seems to be more apt to just let it fly, and in this situation, I think it shines a brighter spotlight on Ricky's approach.

It was just so impressive to see you realize that being soulful in your own way is okay.
And then, Brittany, I feel like you reserved it a little bit, but toward the end, you decided to let it fly.
You, when you get in your flow, was amazing.
So, it's super tough.

Carson, the winner of this battle, I have to say Just because I've seen so much improvement, I'm gonna have to say it's Ricky.

Here's a look at Blake's first battle pairing of the night.
16-year-old Kensington Moore from Nashville, Tennessee, versus 15-year-old Reagan James from burleson, Texas.
Kensington's family relocated from Kentucky to Nashville so she could pursue music.
I got my mind made up, and I can't let go Blake: That gravel that you have where your voice starts to shred I love that.
Congratulations, sweetie.
Daly: High-school sophomore Reagan came to "the voice" hoping to break out of her small town.
Burleson is known for being the home of Kelly clarkson, and I think that being the next big thing from burleson, it'd be awesome.
The ability to work with one of the coaches would be life changing.
Give me love love me, oh, you love me, oohhhh We haven't ever heard anybody like you on this show.
I pick Blake.
Yes! I'm stealing you later.
What are you doing, kiddos? This is my friends little big town.
[ Gasps .]
Hey.

How are y'all? Walking into that room and seeing little big town That was, like, insane.
Blake: That's the first time I've ever heard anybody react to those guys like that.

Even though I am a pop artist, I'm a country girl at heart, and I grew up listening to "boondocks.
" That is, like, my song.
You guys are gonna be doing "team" by lorde.
It's extra challenging, with lorde being such a stylist, but I think you guys are stylists, too.
Kensington and Reagan occupy the same artistic space on my team, and I got to figure out which one of them is the best.
Call all the ladies out they're in their finery Reagan: I was ecstatic when I heard that I was gonna be performing "team" a hundred jewels on throats Because lorde is one of my biggest inspirations.
We're on each other's te-e-e-e-am She does so many little, tiny things in there.
I know.
How do you do that? That's so cool.

Just be sure that you're really thinking about your pitch, but keep all those little things in there because that's what makes you not like anybody else in the world.
Kensington: I was definitely intimidated by Reagan.
Her voice is very different.

For me, on the chorus especially, it's kind of like right at the top of my range.
That's where you flip to your falsetto, right? Yeah.
For you, it's gonna be knowing where you flip so that you're not worried about it.

She's got a great quality and tone to her voice yeah.
So, for Kensington, it's about being confident.

Kimberly: That's a perfect flip! Really? Sometimes I'll even memorize the shape of my mouth.
Then, when you get there, bam, it'll be there.

I couldn't do that side of the piano.

Daly: After their first rehearsal, Kensington fell ill, leaving Reagan to meet with Blake and little big town alone.
[ Chuckles .]

Blake: What'd you do? Kensington's not feeling too good today, but we got to move forward.
For the first time ever, we had an artist that wasn't able to make it to a rehearsal.
So, I'm gonna get a chance to work with Kensington when she starts feeling better, but if you're cool with it, Kimberly can step in.
That'd be awesome.

Daly: After a day of recovery, Kensington joins Reagan and Blake for their band rehearsal.

It was so disappointing to miss the band rehearsal with little big town, but I'm so grateful that we do have this time with Blake today.
We live in cities you'll never see on screen Man, you sure don't sing like you've been sick so strong.

I'm so glad that you're going for it with the falsetto.
If there's one thing I would say to you You can't be confident enough because the nervousness is the thing that derails those moves in your voice.
I was impressed with Kensington, and I was so proud of her for pushing through and coming today.
She has all this power, but she can also back off and do the pretty falsetto thing.
Reagan, she sings so clearly.
You understand every word.
To give you an example, "a hundred jewels on throats" Be sure that you're enunciating.
Living in ruins living in Blake: Coming into today, I would have given the advantage to Reagan, but seeing how Kensington came out here singing like that, this one is neck and neck.
This is so in tune that it just makes my ears smile.
[ Chuckles .]
So freaking happy and sad at the same time.
You don't want to see two of your best against each other, and that's what I've got right now.
And I'm gonna be in the one in the hospital now, with an ulcer.
[ Laughter .]
Daly: Coming up, Kensington and Reagan go head-to-head in an epic battle And you know we're on each other's team Daly: Leaving Blake with a gut-wrenching decision.
There's nothing more that I like than to see him suffer.
I'm changing my mind every second that goes by.
This is a dramatic moment, man.
Daly: Will Gwen use her final steal? I think your voice was even better than I thought.

Since this has happened to him, I realized how much you fight for what you want.
The best thing I never had Daly: Her soulful performance turned all four chairs.
Whoo! Your range is crazy.
We can make you the absolute best version of yourself.

Thank you! Daly: Music student Mia came to "the voice" hoping to follow in her parents' musical footsteps.
Mia: My mom and dad were musicians growing up.
I think that if I got a chair to turn around, it would almost be like me carrying out their dream.
Unconditiona-a-a-a-a-a-a-lly Daly: Her powerful performance also got the attention of all four coaches.
Even though it does need work, it's so good that I don't think it would have been fair for you to have gone home.

When I walked into the room and saw Stevie nicks, I was shocked.
She's amazing, and to have the opportunity to learn from a legend like her was just unbelievable.

I thought just why not, right out the gates, just challenge the crap out of you.
Why not? You have done it.
I gave Beth and Mia "I turn to you" by the one and only Christina Aguilera.
They're paired together because they're both four-chair turns and also there's only room for one belter on my team.
You got everyone to turn, you know? You guys are in very, very rarified air.
I think it's good to do this early on.
You know, you really see who shines through.
You're always there giving me all you g-o-o-ot Beth is such a powerhouse, and when she sings, she just dedicates her entire being into that song.
For the will to carry on Beth: Mia's incredibly talented.
Her runs are super clean.
For everything you do I'm glad that he gave me a partner that'll challenge me.
I can ru-u-u-n to oh, oh, oh, ah oh, that's you.
I want to give you both the same advice.
Okay.
Less is definitely more here.
You guys have the equivalent of what would be, like, these incredible sports cars as voices.
[ Chuckles .]
But you don't have total command of how to drive them, so you're a little all over the road.
It's hard not to emulate Christina, she's so influential, but they need to try to interpret it the way that they would sing it within their comfort zone.
If you give it all up up here, you have nowhere to go.
Mm-hmm.
Don't try to ever be Christina Aguilera.
I can't be her, and neither can you.
No.
It's not gonna ever happen.
Stevie: I think they have the biggest challenge of all.
It's a very hard song to sing.
Sing it from what's happening in your life, what's happening in your life.
It'll be interesting to see what they do to try to sing it together.
Daly: With their battle near, Beth and Mia join Adam and Stevie nicks for a final rehearsal.
I turn to yo-o-o-o-u ohhhhhhhh, yeah Mia: It's flattering to know that Adam is trusting us with something so difficult.
to keep me safe and warm So, we just want to work even harder to prove to him that we can do it.
I turn to yo-o-o-o-u I like how much you've wrangled in things.
I still think like 5% of it could be even more.

Once you go to like 11 We got to keepYou got to stay there.
The intensity has to remain the same.
You can see how hard they're working, but Mia and Beth both have big moments and then afterwards, they kind of fall off a little bit.

It starts to get sloppy right.
When you paint outside the lines, because, I'll tell you, the miraculous thing about a Christina Aguilera She does all that stuff, and it's in perfect time.
For everything you do, I turn to you Adam: Mia she has a sweet, pure quality to her voice that I love so much.
yeah, oh And Beth's got this raw grit that's so cool.
for a heart I can rely on through anything If they can control it a little more, it's gonna be great.
You have to find a good ending.

It's a matter of just mapping it out so that you know exactly what you're gonna be doing there.
If you pace yourself and stay cool, this becomes a great thing.
Just you have to keep progressing, you know? Oh, yeah, we will.
And the more they do, they could blow us away.
Adam: Beth and Mia they both have a lot of ability.
They just need to kind of rein it in.
I'm very confident that they can get this worked on and do it right.

Burleson is known for being the home of Kelly clarkson, and I think that being the next big thing from burleson, it'd be awesome.
The ability to work with one of the coaches would be life changing.

They're paired together because they're both four-chair turns and also there's only room for one belter on my team.
You got everyone to turn, you know? You guys are in very, very rarified air.
I think it's good to do this early on.
You know, you really see who shines through.
You're always there giving me all you g-o-o-ot Beth is such a powerhouse, and when she sings, she just dedicates her entire being into that song.
For the will to carry on Beth: Mia's incredibly talented.
Her runs are super clean.
For everything you do I'm glad that he gave me a partner that'll challenge me.

I want to give you both the same advice.

You guys have the equivalent of what would be, like, these incredible sports cars as voices.

It's hard not to emulate Christina, she's so influential, but they need to try to interpret it the way that they would sing it within their comfort zone.
If you give it all up up here, you have nowhere to go.

Stevie: I think they have the biggest challenge of all.
It's a very hard song to sing.
