The Voice US (2011) s09e07 Episode Script

The Battles Premiere

The battle rounds are so intense.
it may be the toughest part of the competition I'm on fire because they're all so good and they always bring it.
I'm really shocked by the talent that we're seeing this season.
And the battle rounds This is where we really see the best of the best.
That ihow you battle! Whoo! Yeah! Battle rounds They are the crucial part because you're seeing who's evolving and progressing right in front of your eyes.
It was one of the best battle rounds we've ever had.
It was like you were let out of a cage.
I feel like we're at the grammys.
It felt like the jousting of, like, "game of thrones" or something.
What?! To help prepare their artists, our superstar coaches have enlisted some of the biggest names in music.
How are you? Oh, this is gonna be fun.
Adam invited one of his idols, founding member of the legendary band creedence clearwater revival, rock and roll hall of famer John fogerty.
I'm just blown away that you can go up there.
That's a weapon You know, pow! Blake brought in the multi-award-winning country superstar with 32 top-10 hits and over 12 million albums sold, Brad paisley.
I'm a big fan of "the voice.
" To watch people that are having to impress people That is an entirely different level of pressure.
Gwen recruited chart-topping singer, actress, and style icon Selena Gomez.
Hi, Gwen.
Oh, my gosh.
I love "the voice.
" They're working so hard, and you have these incredible mentors making dreams come true.
And pharrell called on multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and producer, with five grammy awards, missy elliott.
Y'all fittin' to make me cry.
Aww.
Ooh.
This is what we do it for.
No, no, it ain't me, it ain't me our coaches will push their teams to be their best.
The passion needs to be smoldering.
It almost feels like you're just kind of backing her up.
Absolutely.
The artists will have to rise to the challenge I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" There's one more note on that.
"Ma'am, I am tonight!" And I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" Walking in Memphis lf they hope to win What the hell just came out of you? Both of you guys are great.
You could make an album right now.
Or be stolen.
You deserve to be on this show, and I'm gonna press my button.
There's your steal! You're amazing.
- There's another steal! - Steals are great because they give me a chance to make my team stronger.
Whoa! Yes! The biggest and best Hey, are you gonna go with superwoman or Lex Luthor sitting down there? Round of battles starts right now.
I have the best team right now.
You have a great team.
I mean, that could change.
That could change.
It's frustrating, isn't it? I mean, it's like I bet you just been pulling your hair out about it, haven't you? Oh, that's funny, the hair joke.
Yeah.
I'm seriously excited about my team right now.
Good.
Do you ever put people together, and then you're like, "what did I do?" Yes! Like, "I ruined my life"? Yeah, you instantly say to yourself, you need a Blake latte.
Yes.
A "blatte"? I always need a Blake latte.
That's crazy.
Right? As our coaches head to their chairs at universal studios Hollywood, let's meet Adam's adviser, music legend and member of the rock and roll hall of fame, John fogerty.
Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band my adviser this season is John fogerty.
Won't you take a ride on the flyin' spoon? He is definitely one of the forefathers of rock 'n' roll.
Ooh doo-doo he's a member of the rock and roll hall of fame.
He's a legend.
Doo, doo, doo lookin' out my back door yeah.
He's written songs that you still feel them resonating today.
Amazing.
Hey.
Mr.
fogerty, thank you.
I can cross that off the old bucket list of mine.
Thank you, buddy.
Now let's take a look at Adam's first battle pairing of the season 21-year-old Jordan Smith from Harlan, Kentucky, versus 51-year-old Regina love from Atlanta, Georgia.
I'm gonna swing Jordan Smith, a college student and choir leader, turned four chairs with one of the most shocking blind auditions in "voice" history.
From the chandelier everyone's standing up for you, dude.
The song that you had chosen is probably one of the most challenging vocals for anybody to sing, let alone a male vocalist.
I had to learn that being different is actually what made me special.
I think that not just the show but the world needs a person like you.
I pick Adam.
Are you pursuing your dreams? 'Cause guess what They can happen.
Regina love became a radio host after a brush with success as a singer.
I signed with evander holyfield in 1999 on his record label, real deal records.
And after five years, the record label folded.
She came to "the voice" in hopes of revitalizing her singing career.
This funky dance all night rock steady it's unbelievable that a voice like that can come out of a human being.
I thought it would be a crime if this voice wasn't on the show.
I pick Adam.
Yes! Hey, guys.
Hello.
Hey.
Hi.
Hey.
How are you? Oh, my God.
How are you? How you doing, bud? Oh, my goodness.
Our adviser was John fogerty.
This guy's like a legend.
I mean, he wrote the Tina Turner "proud Mary.
" Oh, my goodness.
I was so excited.
I think you guys are different, but you're both really powerful.
And I was like, "great singers that complement each other" Yeah.
"Should be singing together.
" This can be great, and Sam Smith is obviously a great singer.
I gave Regina and Jordan "like I can" by Sam Smith.
This is the perfect match, song-wise, for those two singers.
Sam Smith is such an emotional singer, and he draws you in, so their challenge is gonna be trying to stand up to that same level.
But they'll never love you like I can, can, can they'll never love you they'll never love you like I can, can, can Jordan and Regina together It's pure and yet it's really emotive, seeing it so effortlessly presented.
Can, can, can oh, man.
Tremendous.
It's like, I wish I could do that.
A good song should make you feel something.
And you sure do that, both of you.
Thank you.
Jordan, your range I mean I know.
It's not even of this earth.
And I sing high.
Right.
I-I can't do it with that much power.
I'll tell you right now.
Thanks.
And, by the way, make the harmonies really synced up, and they're you're not trailing off too much on each other.
Right.
Gotcha.
Regina, she's done some background singing and things like that, and so she has a good ear for natural harmonies, and so I definitely think that's something that we're gonna work on.
They'll never love you like I can, can, can it's amazing that we can do this show for this long and still have moments where we're we're totally blown away.
And the pairing of the two of you creates this platform to have, like, one of the most amazing moments in the history of this show.
I think we already just did.
With their battle approaching, Jordan and Regina meet with Adam and John fogerty Hello! For a final rehearsal with the band.
Please why are you looking all down the wrong roads? Having the band behind us really added a lot more energy, and Regina really fed off of that.
Never love you like I can, can, can and she was, like, in my face, and there was a couple times when I was like Never love you like I can, can, can there was one line in the very beginning, Regina.
It was like your breath didn't allow you for the space you needed for that line.
Totally agree with it.
Mm-hmm.
Um, Jordan, the second time you did They'll never love you when it was high, it was Fuller.
Mm-hmm.
And the first time, it was a little bit thinner.
Keep it full Yeah, okay.
As much as possible.
All right.
I'm just blown away that you can go up there with such you obviously know what you're doing.
And you hit that, and it's just That's a weapon You know, pow! Right.
It's great.
Adam has a hell of a difficult choice there.
The two of them together is magic.
It's the night of their battle, and Jordan and Regina make their way to the stage.
Jordan has a unique voice, but what's gonna make me stand out is my life experiences.
I'm one of the oldest people in this competition.
I've been waiting for this moment all of my life.
There is a lot of pressure to go up against someone like Regina.
She is a powerhouse, but I think it's very important for me to just be confident in my own abilities.
I am different, and I want this to be a pivotal moment for me that I can look back on and be proud of.
Hey! How are you? Oh, my goodness! Hi, guys.
You look good.
Thank you.
Yes.
You guys excited? Yeah, really excited.
Yes.
I am excited.
You're both two of the best singers I-I know.
So just have fun.
Thank you.
The rest is easy.
The hard part's over.
I'll be your biggest cheerleader out there All right.
The biggest shaved-headed cheerleader you possibly could imagine.
Going head-to-head from team Adam, it's the unique church singer with the surprising voice, Jordan Smith Whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Versus the powerful Atlanta radio host, Regina love! Let the battle begin.
he could be a sinner or a gentleman he could be a preacher when your soul is damned he could be a lawyer on a witness stand but he'll never love you like I can, can a chance encounter of circumstance baby, he's a mantra, keeps your mind entranced he could be the silence in this mayhem he'll never love you like I can, can, can why are you looking down all the wrong roads when mine is the heart and the soul that is sore? Oh, oh, there may be lovers who hold out their hands they'll never love you like I can, can, can they'll never love you like I can, can, can, no oh! They'll never love you like I can, can, can we both have demons that we can't stand I love your demons like devils can and I'm still seeking an honest man then stop deceiving, lord, please ple-e-e-ase why are you looking all down the wrong roads when mine is the heart and the soul that is sore? Oh, there may be lovers who hold out their hands they'll never love you like I can, can, can no, no, they will never love you they'll never love you like I can, can, can oh, whoa they'll never love you like I can, can, can they'll never love you like I can, can, can that's how you battle! And a great one for team Adam! Whoo! Girl, you killed it! Jordan and Regina, everybody! Whoo! We'll get to Adam in a second.
Let's get some comments.
Blake Shelton.
I feel like we're at the grammys right now or something.
That was Crazy.
Regina, such control and such passion about what you're doing up there.
Yes.
It's crazy.
But then Jordan I don't even know What the hell just came out of you? It doesn't make any sense to me.
Your voice is like from another planet, man.
Not a wrong decision here.
Thank you.
Thank you, Blake.
Pharrell.
That was a really masterful performance.
Miss Regina love, I have to say, it was just amazing to see you float across the stage like that.
You and Jordan went back and forth To be honest, it felt like the jousting of, like, "game of thrones" or something.
It was just like listening to two beautiful trumpets going back and forth.
Thank you, coach pharrell.
Gwen Stefani.
It is just shocking to me, the ability that you both have.
And you're just so effortless.
Obviously, you were meant to do what you do, and it's so beautiful.
And you are just I don't understand you.
You're so unexpected, and that's what turns me on.
I'm like, "wow.
" Hear that? Take that Really take that in.
Really take that in.
Take that in.
That just Jordan, that just happened.
Congratulations, both you guys.
Thank you.
Whoo.
Adam, how are you gonna make this decision? Well, you know, you're both very powerful singers that command a lot of attention when you're onstage, but the best thing about it was you were both able to be these incredible singers without stepping on each other's toes.
I don't know if anyone could have handled singing with Regina except for you, Jordan.
She's very powerful, and you did such an unbelievable job of complementing that.
Man, this sucks.
I'm just trying to talk my way out of this, and it's not gonna happen.
Adam, look, tough decision, we know, but who is the winner of this battle? I think you both deserve to be in this competition, and I'm starting to feel dumb for putting you together.
I think you're both special for completely different reasons.
But I got to go with what I feel.
The winner of this battle is Jordan.
Jordan is gonna move on, representing Adam levine in the knockouts.
Congratulations.
Jordan's voice is the unicorn.
And his ability to connect with people on a human level is just as powerful as his talent, which is very rare.
Jordan can win "the voice.
" I have no doubt in my mind.
You are gifted.
Thank you.
Thank you very, very much.
I'm really excited that I get to stay on team Adam.
He really does see something in me maybe that I don't even see myself yet.
I love you guys.
We love you, too.
I'm so proud of you.
Coaches, let me remind you Regina is available to steal.
Regina, anything you want to say to your coach, to Adam? I just want to say, Adam, I thank you so much for everything.
Can I tell you something? Yes.
Every second I got to spend with you, working, was Was beautiful, so There's your steal! Yes! Gwen Stefani Yes! Yes! Steals Regina love! Whoo-hoo! Yes! You are back in the game.
Yes, baby! Yes.
Jewelry is flying around here.
I have tears in my eyes! Me too.
You deserve to be on this show, and I'm gonna press my button.
You're amazing.
There you go.
Gwen steals Regina love and wants a hug.
I just want to be around you.
I love you.
You'll teach me something.
Promise? I got you.
We're gonna teach each other.
Okay.
I am so excited.
It means so much to me.
This is my life.
This is what I was born to do.
And I am so glad I am here.
I am ready for the knockouts.
Boom! I was not planning on that.
Thank you so much.
It was like the lord went like that with my hand, and I was like, "whoa!" He sure did, 'cause I was praying for him to! Regina is one of those singers that is, like, kind of mind-blowing.
I typically never work with someone like that, 'cause what do I have to offer that? See you guys.
Bye.
But Regina is a really good addition to my team.
This show is awesome.
It is, 'cause you just surprised us out of nowhere.
Yeah.
Steals give artists a second chance, and I'm happy that Gwen stole her, I'm glad that she's on the show, and can't wait to see what she does.
She's super strong.
She kills it.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Coming up Walking in Memphis the first night of battles Wow! Reaches new heights.
The holes of my sweater ain't no Mountain high enough I do not know what you're gonna do.
To put you two together was idiotic.
Hear, hear.
Thank you, Dr.
evil.
Throw me a bone here.
And later You got stolen! Whoa! The desire to steal an artist humbles our coaches.
I love you.
Please do not break my heart.
I worship your voice.
I want to make beautiful music with you.
This is an epic battle.
Ohh! This is "the voice" welcome back to the battles.
Let's check in with Blake and his team's adviser, country superstar Brad paisley.
Oh, I didn't know about that last thing.
You don't ad-lib on "dueling banjos.
" I'm sorry.
Get out.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
As they get settled, let's meet Blake's first battle pair 21-year-old Tyler dickerson from denham Springs, Louisiana, versus 16-year-old Zach seabaugh from marietta, Georgia.
After finding success at an early age I was known as the outlaw kid.
You know, I did have a deal and went on tour, but I lost all that.
And right now I work with my dad at his fence company.
Tyler came to "the voice" hoping for another shot.
Pretty little thing, let me light your candle 'cause, mama, I'm sure hard to handle now gets around with his blind audition, he got one when coach Blake pushed his button.
Yes! I remember you.
This is my second chance.
Congratulations, man.
You sounded great.
Zach seabaugh, a high-school junior, longed for a music career.
Last year, I decided that I was no longer gonna play football.
He hoped turning the chair would prove he made the right decision.
I just wanna take your ti-I-I-me he turned three, impressing our coaches with his performance.
And that's not a 16-year-old's voice.
That's superman's voice.
Man, you have something that rattled the room.
I pick Blake.
You got a shot at this thing.
I'm not kidding.
Come on in here.
I got somebody for y'all to meet.
My friend Brad paisley.
Hey.
How's it going? Good.
Nice to meet you.
I'm very excited to have Brad paisley as my adviser.
He's such an inspiration.
I love his music.
Being 16 and having this opportunity to talk to Brad paisley and Blake Shelton It's crazy, it's wild.
Y'all know this song? Travis tritt lives like Oh, okay.
15 minutes away.
I gave Tyler and Zach "I'm gonna be somebody" by Travis tritt.
You're kind of a Southern, rockin' guy.
Yeah.
And that's what Travis does, but this is exactly what you auditioned with, top of top of the field, so I think it's a good thing for you guys to meet in the middle on and make this tough decision for me.
Bobby played his guitar on the harder side of town Tyler is the quintessential person to be singing this.
He has that Travis tritt, bad-boy thing.
He had dedication, he had the heart and soul but Zach has got a more traditional voice.
And he's got a charisma, too.
It's fun to see these folks at this stage.
That's really inspiring.
I can tell that you know this song really well.
Mm-hmm.
Be careful that you don't look like you're just going through the motions when you sing it, like you've heard and played it 10 million times.
Right.
And you need to think about what this song is saying.
There's a message to this song, that this guy has got something to prove.
And even though you've got a softer voice, you need to be able to affect it somehow to make it seem like, "hey, I'm gonna freakin' make it.
" I can connect to this song with the career that I'm about to take on, mebody.
" And it's risky and scary, but I-I'm really excited.
Zach, sing me the line that you'll have "He had dedication, he had the heart and soul.
" He had dedication, he had the heart and soul yeah, like, when you say, "had had the heart and Had that lilt That's really cool.
There's an earnestness and a heart that you can put in this and make it very signature.
One of these days, I'm gonna break these chains at this point, I think Tyler may have the edge, but I've seen this so many times.
People get around the piano and they get some advice and they think hard about it.
And tomorrow, it could be a completely different story.
As their battle nears, Tyler and Zach meet with Blake and Brad paisley for a final rehearsal.
Where it's hard for a poor boy to find the money he had dedication, he had the heart and soul sounds great.
Zach, just your overall performance today Mm-hmm.
Lt's 100% better than it was yesterday.
I agree.
Just you found your moments.
Blake, he's very caring, and what he's given me has really helped me.
It's gonna better me as an artist, for sure.
I heard pitch more from Tyler today than I did yesterday.
You know when you're off Off-key a little bit.
Yeah.
Just make sure that don't happen.
Mm-hmm.
I was just wanting to make sure that those high notes were on point, but I was losing focus on the rest of the song.
One of these days, I'm gonna break these chains this battle's gonna come down to whoever can convince me that they really do want to be somebody, and they know that what they're doing in that moment is the thing that they were meant to do.
Coming up, Blake's young country singers "Yeah, I'm gonna be somebody" go head-to-head.
Oh, yeah and later No, no, no ain't no Mountain high enough ain't no river wide enough oh, no, no, no, no, no, no the performances continue to impress our coaches.
That was so good! Whoo! This guy's a shark.
Where the hell did she come from? That was my favorite battle that I've ever seen.
It was like listening to vocal cirque du soleil.
I'm once again shocked that this is even gonna be a possibility, so let's party.
"Oh, my God.
" "Ooh!" Shame on y'all! Sickos.
This is "the voice" welcome back.
It's the night of their battle, and Tyler and Zach make their way to the stage for one last meeting with Blake.
How y'all feeling? Good.
Good.
Don't get in the "I know this song like the back of my hand" mode.
Right.
I mean, this is the moment that you're singing about, you know? You got to wrap your head around that message.
Make it hard on me.
That's all you got to do.
I've had some success, but it all fell apart.
And being here and having this opportunity is my redemption.
For me to be so young and just starting this country career, it'd be a dream come true to advance in this competition.
I'm gonna work hard and make it to the lives.
Battling now, from team Blake, it's the Louisiana Southern rocker, Tyler dickerson Versus the 16-year-old high-school athlete and aspiring country singer, Zach seabaugh! Whoo! Come on, Zach! Let's go, buddy.
Let the battle begin.
Hey, yeah whoa, oh, oh Bobby played his guitar on the harder side of town where it's hard for a poor boy to find the money he had dedication, he had the heart and soul somehow knew he was born to play and he would say, "yeah, I'm gonna be somebody" oh, yeah "one of these days I'm gonna break these chains" "I'm gonna be somebody someday you can bet your hard-earned dollar I wi-I-I-I-I-ll" oh the road was a struggle, took him 10 years to the top now he's number one on the stage and the radio still he can't believe how people come from Miles around when it seems like only yesterday he would say "I'm gonna be somebody" somebody "one of these days, I'm gonna break these chains" "I'm gonna be somebody someday you can bet your hard-earned dollar I will" oh, yeah "you can bet your hard-earned dollar I will" oh, yeah "you can bet your hard-earned dollar I wi-I-I-ll" that is Tyler and Zach battling to move on, on team Blake.
That was awesome.
Whoo! Whoo! We'll get some thoughts from you, coach, in a minute.
Pharrell, what did you think? Zach, there was one little transition over here, where, like, your voice cracked.
But it was really refreshing to hear you sing in a higher register for the first time.
Tyler, what I loved about your performance was, like, you look like you've been singing like for 15, 20 years onstage.
And that really carries over in the performance.
Tyler, it's true you have a lot of comfort up there onstage.
I was surprised by some of the notes 'cause you just seem like you're so experienced.
I thought it was a good performance.
Thank you.
Zach, I think you're, like, a phenomenon.
You're 16 years old, and how deep your And rich your voice is.
How is that happening, parents? Like He really is superman of singing.
Fantastic job, both of you guys.
You know, Tyler, it's almost as if your comfort level hindered you a little bit.
You threw some notes away 'cause you are that comfortable, which, by the way, is a fantastic asset to have, as a singer.
But sometimes it worked against you because you have Zach, who wants thisBad.
So, I think, in this particular scenario, I needed to feel that fire a little bit more.
All right, some thoughts from your fellow coaches.
Blake, you got the final decision, buddy.
I'll start with Zach.
First of all, I always love that moment And it happened at the blind auditions, too, when somebody finally mentions the fact that he's 16 years old, and you hear all the dirty old women in here "Ooh!" "Oh, my God.
" Ooh! So, shame on y'all.
Shame on y'all! Sickos.
When you go for some of those higher notes and your your voice starts to shred a little bit, that's badass.
I hate to say I'm proud of you.
I'm just I'm I'm really happy for you.
Why can't you be proud of him? We've only had one Huh? You can be proud of him.
Well, I mean, I di't raise the kid.
No.
I'm just really You can be proud of him.
It's okay.
Yeah.
I'm proud of you.
Yeah.
I'm so proud of you, Zach.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Now, Tyler, we talked about it before we came out here tonight.
You know, "Tyler, quit singing this like you've sang it a thousand times.
Put some passion back into it.
" But I know what an incredible talent you are.
All right, Blake, who is the winner of this battle? Man, I have to make the decisions that I have to make on this show based on On these moments, if I'm really doing my job right.
And so, based on what I've seen, the winner of this battle is Zach.
Zach's gonna move on and represent Blake Shelton in the knockouts.
Congratulations to Zach.
Everything that Blake's taught me has really helped me a lot, and it's bettered me so much as an artist.
I'm proud of you.
I'm proud of you.
Okay.
Good job, Zach! Yeah! I'm so excited.
America, watch out for knockouts.
I'm coming.
A big hand for Tyler dickerson, everybody! Good luck to you, brother man.
Thank you.
Good luck, man.
Keep after it.
Oh, yeah.
You know, there's so much that I learned from Blake as a musician.
It's definitely revived the feelings that I had when I was 15, 16 years old.
That was a good battle.
Zach is the one that had the Mountain to climb.
Sometimes they're the ones that work the hardest, and that's what happened today.
God, I'm so proud.
Thank you.
Yes.
It's awesome, son.
Group hug? Yeah.
Whoo! Don't rip my pants.
Coming up, pop superstar Selena Gomez Hi, Gwen.
Lends Gwen a helping hand.
You did mess up, but Mm-hmm.
In the mistakes, there's an opportunity to find something.
And later No, no, no it ain't me, it ain't me More unbelievable battles Walking in Memphis and one performance that has our coaches Wow! Eager to steal.
Aah! There is a steal! Oh! There's another steal! This is "the voice" welcome back to the battles.
Let's check on Gwen and her adviser, award-winning singer and actress Selena Gomez.
Hi, Gwen.
Oh, my gosh.
I cannot believe you came.
Thank you so much.
Thank you for thinking of me for this.
For my adviser, I brought in Selena Gomez.
She is a massive superstar, and she's accomplished so much at such a young age.
I'm so happy.
I grew up listening to you.
Yay! She's blossoming into this truthful artist, and it's really cool to see.
I'm totally sure that Selena's gonna give my team really good advice.
I'm so excited.
Let's look at Gwen's first pairing 26-year-old Ellie Lawrence from crandall, Georgia, versus 26-year-old Tim atlas from San Jose, California.
Indie pop artist Ellie Lawrence felt out of place in her country-music-loving small town.
For me, coming to "the voice," I feel like I finally fit somewhere where I can actually be 100% me as an artist.
Her soulful blind-audition performance of an '80s pop song turned three chairs.
We don't have to take our clothes off wow.
That's the queen of ska, man? Yeah.
Like, she is my idol.
I have to pick Gwen.
Yes! Oh, my God! I cannot believe this! After years of playing guitar in the background, Tim atlas took a risk during the blind auditions.
This is the first time I'm stepping out onstage as a singer/songwriting without my band.
Give a little time to me we'll burn this out he got validation when Gwen pushed her button.
I just love how passionate you are and how you want to really deliver your heart.
We were meant to be.
Thank you so much.
Yay! Hi! Selena Gomez.
Hi, Tim.
Hi, Ellie.
Our adviser is Selena Gomez.
Meeting her in person It just makes my heart want to explode.
Me and my sister loved your show.
Thank you.
Hi, sister.
I put you guys together 'cause you both sort of have that indie-alternative, singer/songwriter thing going on.
I gave Tim and Ellie "sweater weather" by t neighborhood.
All I am is a man whoo! I want the world in my hands doing a song that's really modern and a big hit is always really exciting, and I felt like, stylistically, it could be either one of their songs.
So let me hold Ellie has a very strong voice.
Both your hands in and that can be intimidating.
The holes of my sweater it's really up to me to match that.
I'm depressed right now 'cause I love both of you guys so much.
But when he's singing it, I'm hearing the melody a little clearer.
And you sing some of the words, and then they fall off.
Okay.
And it's part of your style, but I think that you need to cry out a little bit more at the end.
Your love, one mouth, ah, ah you know, just, like, do it.
Let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater Ellie, you have really good control.
What? And I love that.
Thank you.
It's so great.
Tim, I mean, you got crazy rhythm.
It's awesome.
Just give more of yourself.
Whatever you can do to get your personality across, that's what you got to do, I think.
He's gonna be, like, on that stage Like smiling Yeah.
Flashing that smile.
As their battle nears, Ellie and Tim meet with Gwen and Selena to rehearse with the band.
One love one house no shirt no blouse so, is it really awkward for you to not have a guitar? Yes.
It almost feels like you're the accompanying guy and you're just kind of backing her up.
Yeah.
And I don't want that, because this really has to be about you, as well.
Right.
It's really hard for Tim because Ellie has a real stage presence.
Me in those little high-waisted shorts, oh she knows what I think about Tim putting the guitar down added something.
It brought him to life.
One love, two house one love, one Aw.
You did mess up, but in the mistakes, there is an opportunity to find something.
Yeah.
And that smirk was very sweet.
Having a moment where you were feeling the words I thought it actually was on purpose at first, and then I realized I was like, "what are you saying?" But I liked that, you know? Cool.
You have a little charm to you.
When I'm not singing, I get, like, awkward.
Tim just really needs to feel comfortable in his body.
It's it's her turn to sing.
Mm-hmm.
You definitely need to, like, acknowledge she's singing, but you can also be like, "hey, guys, check this out.
" You know what I'm saying? You're Okay.
You have to acknowledge them, as well.
Okay, cool.
Gwen is is one of the coolest people.
You feel me, I feel you you can feel me, but I'm not really looking it's not a gimmick, or it's not fake.
She's just being who she is, and that's how she's gotten so far.
Ellie, you have really good, natural instincts, but I think that you're closing your eyes a-a lot.
Keep my eyeballs open.
Gotcha.
Onstage, if I'm not confident, it's gonna come through.
The holes of my sweater and no one can connect with me if I'm sitting there with my eyes shut the whole time.
These hearts adore I love both of them.
I don't think either one of them should go home.
But whoever has the emotion, the character, and the stage presence is gonna be the winner.
You're doing great.
It's the night of their battle, and Ellie and Tim arrive at the stage.
Ellie did turn three chairs.
So that can be very intimidating.
But I have something to offer, and Gwen saw that.
This song gives me that opportunity to shine and really show them what I'm about.
Growing up in a small town, this is an opportunity of a lifetime.
Where I'm from, I kind of struggled to get people to pay attention to me.
And now that I have this big platform, I don't want to lose it.
So, for me to win this battle, it would make my heart bust into a million pieces.
Coming up So let me hold Gwen's indie artists take the stage for a moving performance Both your hands in the holes of my sweater that impresses our coaches.
That was so good! You were kind of swirling around each other and feeling each other'sVibes.
There was a lot of, like, intensity with it.
That's when they first started feeling each other up there.
This is "the voice" .
welcome back.
Going voice to voice from team Gwen, it's the small-town indie pop artist with big-city dreams, Ellie Lawrence Yay! Versus the California recording engineer and folk singer, Tim atlas! Tim! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! The battle starts now.
All I am is a man I want the world in my hands I hate the beach but I stand in California with my toes in the sand use the sleeves of my sweater let's have an adventure head in the clouds, but my gravity's centered touch my neck, and I'll touch yours me in those little high-waisted shorts 'cause it's too cold for you here and now so let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater these hearts adore everyone the other beats hardest for inside, this place is warm outside, it starts to pour coming down, one love two mouths one love one house no shirt no blouse just us, you find out nothing that I wouldn't wanna tell you about no, no, no 'cause it's too cold cold for you here and now so let me hold hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater and it's too cold oh, it's too cold the holes of my sweater wow! Yes! That is a battle for team Gwen.
Give it up for Ellie and Tim.
That was so good! That was awesome, guys.
Congratulations.
I know Adam's got a lot to say.
Adam.
You know what my favorite part about this battle was, is that you guys both really committed to the moment.
You were kind of swirling around each other and feeling each other'sVibes.
Sorry.
That almost it felt weird for a minute, but I recovered.
You know, neither one of you lack passion ever.
That's the most important thing.
You got to be totally in it.
When Tim delivered that first line, I was like, "oh!" There was a lot of, like, intensity with it.
That's when they first started feeling each other up there.
Vibes.
Each each other's vibes.
Right, right.
But, yeah, that first moment, the way you addressed the audience It was very compelling.
And so that's why I would go with Tim.
Thanks, Adam.
Blake.
You guys both have awesome hair.
But you have really unique voices, each of you.
And Ellie seems like she's a fun, outgoing personality onstage, and Tim seems very intense with what he's doing.
And it works for both of you.
If I was Gwen, I would probably go with Tim just because I've never heard a voice quite like Tim's before.
Yeah! Whoo! Whoo! Thank you.
Pharrell.
Ellie, you know how to, like, hypnotize people when you're doing your thing, and it's like snake charming.
It was super convincing.
And, Tim, I think you bit into the moment instantly, and I thought, "okay, this guy's a shark.
" So, that makes this very difficult because I think that they are both gifted, great catches.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, pharrell.
Thank you so much.
Gwen, you have the final decision.
Honestly, I was getting all motherly.
I was like, "they're perfect! Look how cute they are! I love them both.
" And, Tim, you are unbelievable tonight.
If I were listening to an album, I would want to listen to a voice like yours because your voice has so much personality.
We took the guitar off, and it was a little weird, but he did so well.
That means so much to me.
Thank you so much.
And, Ellie, I feel like these two guys on the ends are just telling me to pick Tim because they want to steal you.
I'd like to go on the record I would like to go on record and say that I was genuinely trying to give you my most honest, genuine, and heartfelt advice.
Very honorable man, that Gandhi down there.
Don't clap for that! You are so good.
Gwen, we got to know Who is the winner of this battle? I'm sick because I love both of them so much, and, um This is so painful.
The winner of the battle Is Ellie.
Ellie, you're moving on to the knockout rounds, representing Gwen Stefani.
Ellie's stunned by her coach's decision.
Oh, my God! I picked Ellie because she's got a great voice.
She's got an amazing stage presence.
I totally relate to her in so many ways.
You're awesome! Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
She's my idol, and the fact that I get to stay in her presence for a little bit longer I just feel blessed and happy 'cause this stuff doesn't happen to people like me.
And I'm going to knockouts! Ahh! Coaches, let me remind you Tim is available to stea Tim, anything you want to say to Gwen? Um, Gwen Ahh! There is a steal! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! He's so awesome.
His voice is so rad.
He's great.
Pharrell, what was it about Tim in that battle round? I watched you the whole, entire time.
I'm like, "let me see what he does.
" When you perform, I like your passion.
You know how to, like, turn it on, and I was like, "okay, he's got it.
" Well, go say hi to your new coach pharrell.
Here we go, here we go congratulations.
Pharrell steals Tim atlas, and we'll see him now in the knockouts.
My man.
Thank you.
Tim was very possessive of the moment, and he was very engaging.
So, I knew that I was gonna steal him if I had the opportunity.
Bravery that should be the only crutch you lean on.
And I think today was a good exhibition for that.
Here we go, here we go the song came on, and you just were like I was like, "okay, cool.
" Cool, cool, man.
You got to have that, you know? Thank you.
You're never better off alone Gwen really helped me boost my confidence, and now to work with a legendary producer like pharrell It's just incredible.
Phew! This is intense.
I almost thought you weren't gonna pick her.
She's my girl, but I love him.
He's great.
His voice is so interesting.
He ain't afraid.
Still to come I'll be there in a hurry you don't have to worry pharrell's first battle pair Ain't no Mountain high enough brings grammy award-winner missy elliott to tears.
Oh, my gosh.
Wow.
This is what we do it for.
I just haven't heard something to move me.
And you don't hear that these days.
And later I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" Walking in Memphis lt's a battle of Blake's powerhouses.
This may be the ultimate four-chair-turn battle.
Wow! Gosh, it's great singing, man.
This is "the voice" welcome back to the battle rounds.
Let's check on pharrell and his adviser, grammy award-winning artist and producer missy elliott.
I just want to say how special this is to me.
There's only one missy elliott.
I appreciate you having me here.
Well, I'm glad you're here.
I appreciate that.
I'm humbled.
Now let's meet pharrell's first battle pairing 27-year-old Celeste betton from hinesville, Georgia, versus 24-year-old mark hood from Chicago, Illinois.
Celeste betton, a mother of two, comes from a military family.
My parents met in the military, and my husband is in the military, but my passion is gospel music.
Perfect man for me her soulful blind-audition performance of "I love you I do" caught pharrell's attention.
You're singing because it really meant something to you.
And I couldn't not hit my button.
Thank you.
While mark hood had a love for music, his mother had other plans for him.
My mom drops a bomb on me.
"You're going to Chicago high school for agricultural sciences, which is on a 100-acre farm.
" I don't even like animals.
I'm scared of dogs.
He came to "the voice" hoping to show her that he had a future in music.
Hey, hey, but my answer whoa, whoa his version of "use me" got all four coaches to turn their chairs.
You're just using me up you high-fived the stage.
What kind of music do you want to sing? John legend meets pharrell almost.
I pick pharrell! Oh, man! Hey, guys.
Yo.
Is that missy over there? Is it worth it? Let me work it.
What?! Yo, missy! I saw missy elliott.
I'm like Is it worth it? Let me work it throw my thing down, flip it, and reverse it hey.
Missy elliott is the epitome of an artist that has longevity.
I've paired you guys together because I felt like you guys are super soulful and I felt like this song was just like a natural fit for the both of you.
I gave them "ain't no Mountain high enough" by Marvin gaye and tammi terrell.
Listen, baby ain't no Mountain high it'll give them the room to show their range and project their voices.
Ain't no valley low what I want to see from them is who's gonna make missy and I feel their performance.
Yeah just call my name I'll be there in a hurry you don't have to worry, 'cause, baby, there ain't no Mountain high enough mark's voice is so special.
The challenge for me is just being able to Ain't no valley low enough Match his intensity.
I'm done.
Call the car.
Aw, come on.
I just felt like I was back in the '70s or something Yeah.
Like, when the music felt good.
Well, that was like some of them runs were just like Oh, yeah.
George jetson.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was a great feeling, and that's something that can't necessarily be taught.
Remember the day I set you free I told you you could always count on me, baby I wasn't around when tammi and Marvin sung this record.
From that day on, I made a vow but it made me feel like I was in that moment.
I'll be there when you call me some way, somehow 'cause, baby, there ain't no Mountain high enough and I hadn't felt that from music in a long time.
Oh, my gosh.
Wow.
Don't do it.
This is what we do it for.
That kind of purity It was great.
That is so humbling.
Yeah.
That is Wow.
I just haven't heard something to move me.
And you don't hear that these days.
Or feel that.
Or feel that.
Yes.
I thank y'all so much for that that No, thank you.
That was really good.
I've been blown away before, but it's when they sneak up on you like that.
It's It was It was all there.
Unbelievable.
We never had a critique for them "Do this more, do this less, do this together.
" Like, we never told them what to do.
I think that's a first.
With their battle near, Celeste and mark meet with pharrell and missy elliott for one last rehearsal.
I made a vow I'll be there when you want me some way, somehow hey! Those were some really choice Oh, yeah, you pulled out Runs today.
Yes.
Whew! Don't have me in here crying.
Celeste has an incredible voice.
Singing with her is magical, but it's intimidating.
See, y'all complement each other, you know? I love him.
She's so good.
You're feeding off each other's energy.
The bar is set so high, and you want to live up to the expectation that they already have of you, if not exceeding it.
There's one one run that you didn't do in your second verse.
I told you you could always count on me me dar darling yes.
There you go.
Darling yes.
That's that stank on it.
Yeah.
Look how important it was for you to remember, as small as that was.
Okay.
This is why I love and I'm so grateful for "the voice" Because of this.
It's a gift to work with you guys.
Anointed.
Both of you are anointed.
I know I got to lose one of you.
It's the hardest thing in the world for me.
I have no idea how pharrell is gonna pick a winner in this battle.
Ugh! Still to come Ain't no Mountain high enough Celeste and mark bring coach pharrell to his feet.
What are you gonna do?! Forcing him to make one of the toughest decisions in "voice" history.
I made a mistake by putting you guys together.
I don't think you did make a mistake because it was one of the best battle rounds we've ever had.
And later Gentlemen.
John fogerty inspires team Adam How are you? I sat down on the edge of my bed and out came, "it ain't me! It ain't me!" "I ain't no senator's son!" To give a memorable performance of his iconic song.
It ain't me no, it ain't me I ain't no fortunate son this is "the voice" welcome back to the battle rounds.
It's the night of their battle, and Celeste and mark arrive at the stage.
I've invested a lot of time, hard work, tears, sleepless nights into this.
And I want the world to see what I got, I want my parents to see what I got, and I just want to show myself what I got.
My goal in this performance to stand out is making sure that pharrell feels every note that I'm singing.
This is gonna be a tough one for me you know that, 'cause you guys are that great.
And I know y'all are gonna make this memorable, and I'm grateful that I got the opportunity to meet you guys and to have you on my team.
This battle is so important to me.
A little kid from Chicago whose mom sent him to a farm school is about to walk out on the biggest stage ever.
Being a military spouse and being a military brat, what I have learned is resilience.
And I want my kids to see mommy living a dream.
So, when I step out on that stage, I'm giving my all.
Which team pharrell artist will win this battle? Will it be the teacher's assistant with the powerful voice, Celeste betton Get 'em, baby! Get 'em, baby! Or the energetic Chicago R&B artist mark hood? Hey, baby.
Oh! Do your good thing.
Yes.
It's "go" time, baby.
Yes.
It's "go" time, baby.
This battle begins right now.
Ooh, ah yeah oh, oh, listen, baby ain't no Mountain high ain't no valley low ain't no river wide enough, baby now, if you need me, call me, no matter where you are no matter how far don't worry, baby, yeah just call my name I'll be there in a hurry you don't have to worry 'cause, baby, there ain't no Mountain high enough ain't no valley low enough ain't no river wide enough to keep me from getting to you, babe do you remember the day Ooh I set you free? I told you you could always count on me, yeah and from that day on, I made a vow I'll be there when you want me some way, somehow 'cause, baby, there ain't no Mountain high enough ain't no valley low enough ain't no river wide enough to keep me from getting to you oh, no, no, no if you're ever in trouble, I'll be there on the double just send for me oh, baby oh, ooh my love is alive way down in my heart although we are Miles apart if you ever need a helping hand I'll be there on the double j-j-j-just as fast as I can hey-ey ain't no Mountain high enough oh, whoa, ain't no valley low enough, no, no, no oh, no, ain't no river wide enough to keep me from you oh, to keep me from you ain't no Mountain high enough ain't no river wide enough oh, no, no, no, no, no, no ain't no river wide enough oh, to keep me from you ain't no Mountain high enough ain't no valley low enough ain't no river wide enough to keep me from getting to you, baby ba-a-a-be that is a battle for team pharrell! Give it up for Celeste and mark! What are you gonna do?! Gwen Stefani, your thoughts.
That was my favorite battle that I've ever seen.
What?! You are incredible.
Thank you.
All of that spirit that you have in you The light is, like, coming out.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And, Celeste, your attitude up there is so infectious.
I do not know what you're gonna do.
Mark, you are electric up there.
It's like a a spark plug.
I don't even know what that It was a kick or something? I don't even know what the hell that was.
So good.
That was so good.
There u go, yeah.
Celeste, whew! Your tone, I would say, is the most unique of the two.
But you both lit this place up, and we all felt every second of it.
Thanks, coach.
Blake.
Mark, we all turned our chairs for you, but Celeste came out here, and it's like, where the hell did she come from? Either one of them could be a star.
So, what are you gonna do, little buddy? The first time you guys rehearsed, you guys made missy cry.
Never seen anything like that on this show before.
And then today it's like you guys raised the bar again, and I just had to stand up.
Celeste, your choice of notes It was literally like listening to vocal cirque du soleil.
Where does that come from? And then, mark, like, who can move that much and sing and do the things that you do? Not Blake.
I made a mistake by putting you guys together 'cause I don't want to lose any any one of you.
I don't think you did make a mistake because it was one of the best battle rounds we've ever had.
Pharrell, who is the winner of this battle? This is tough for me, man, 'cause you guys are both amazing.
You really are.
I'm just gonna go with my gut right now and say The winner of this battle This is "the voice" welcome back.
Before the break, Celeste and mark gave a showstopping performance, leaving pharrell with a difficult decision to make.
This is tough for me, man, 'cause you guys are both amazing.
You really are.
I'm just gonna go with my gut right now and say The winner of this battle Is mark.
Mark hood moves on to the knockouts, representing team pharrell.
I love you.
Mark and Celeste That was probably one of the most masterful performances I've ever seen on the show.
It's all good.
But I went with mark because, musically, he can do anything.
He can do gospel.
He can do jazz.
He can do R&B.
He's an anomaly.
I think he does have what it takes to move forward, all the way to the end of the show.
My mom gave me the gift of music, and I honed it in church.
And my dad's a pastor, so this is the reason that they see this light that they see.
Like, I am happy.
Celeste, anything you'd like to say to pharrell? Just thank you.
UmOf course you want to move on, but, you know, it'sver, so No.
Whatever my lot Thou hast taught me to say It is well with my soul it's well.
It's well.
Ladies and gentlemen, a big thank-you to Celeste betton.
Oh, my God.
Come here, sweetheart.
Steals were vital for me last season 'cause my steal wound up being my top guy.
So we'll see what happens.
It's okay.
Oh, my goodness.
Mommy did her very best, okay? We love you, pharrell! Thank you.
While pharrell takes a moment to collect himself Daly:Let's meet Adam's next battle pairing 27-year-old Dustin monk from Jacksonville, Florida, versus James dupré from bayou chicot, Louisiana.
Professional barber Dustin monk came to "the voice" hoping to turn a chair for his mother.
Growing up, it was a lot of me and mom.
She would go to the ends of the world for me.
I'm very proud of the man Dustin has become.
Yeah, you're gonna know His edgy blind-audition performance caught both Adam and Blake's attention.
There was a little bit of R&B in there.
There was some rock 'n' roll.
You have everything in your voice.
So, I pick Adam.
James dupré came to "the voice" hoping that pursuing his dream would support his family.
I have four beautiful little boys.
And whatever happens, I want my boys to be super-proud.
Let her cry his powerful country voice impressed all four coaches.
I'll make it my personal responsibility that you end up in the right hands.
Fitting in is boring for anyone that wants to be extraordinary.
And despite his roots, he took a risk.
I'm gonna go with Adam.
Oh! Ohh! Gentlemen, how you doing? What's up? What's happening? When I saw Adam and John fogerty, I immediately thought, "there's no way.
" Mr.
fogerty, it's an honor.
Good to meet you.
Hey.
How are you? I've listened to his music since I was 10 years old.
He's just a legend.
My mind is blown right now.
Listen, guys, you're singing a song that John fogerty sings, and he's right in front of you.
What could you possibly have to be nervous about? Adam gave us "fortunate son" by creedence clearwater revival.
It's surreal to me.
Not only are we singing in front of Adam, now we got to sing it in front of the guy that wrote the song No pressure.
You guys both have strong, powerful voices.
And with this song, there's rock 'n' roll, there's blues, there's country There's a lot of things in it that I think that fits both of these palates really well.
I paired Dustin and James together.
I mean, they're very different vocally, but I think they're pretty similar as far as the presence that they have.
Some folks are born, made to wave the flag ooh, they're red, white, and blue Dustin has a rock-'n'-roll voice.
He can belt it out with an edge, and, you know, his singing on this song was cool.
It ain't me it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one James brought a little bit more of americana I mean even to the song "fortunate son.
" Kind of blew my mind, hearing that.
It's an all-out, drag-out rock-'n'-roll song, and I need to see more from you guys.
The thoughts behind this song It was a lot of anger.
There was the Vietnam war going on.
Right.
Now, I was drafted and they're making me fight, and one has actually defined why.
So, this was all boiling inside of me.
And I sat down on the edge of my bed and out came, "it ain't me! It ain't me!" "I ain't no senator's son!" You know? It took about 20 minutes to write the song.
That's so awesome.
Wow.
Well, that was the best story ever told.
You better use all that to understand what you're doing now.
I could definitely see myself imagining my own kids in that situation.
This song will bring me out of my comfort zone, and that's actually what I had in mind when I picked team Adam.
There's such a distinct quality to his voice that you can't just duplicate.
So what I want to do is do our own thing with it.
If it was, like, really strummy, like a couple acoustics.
You got a guitar around here? Yeah, let's get a guitar up.
Dustin m.
Being in that room already is beyond a dream come true in itself.
It ain't me no, it ain't me yeah.
And then next thing I know, John has an acoustic guitar, and he's taking the time to re-arrange the whole thing.
It's crazy.
That is better.
It sure made what they're doing make a lot of sense.
Yeah.
I thought the acoustics kind of softened it up enough to where their voices could shine through it.
And I'm really happy that John was into it.
It was one of the best moments I've ever had on this show.
With their battle fast approaching, Dustin and James meet with Adam and John fogerty to rehearse with the band.
It ain't me it ain't me it ain't me it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one one thing is, at the end, I just want to get the timing down.
Yeah, I-I heard that, too So you're ahead of the beat rather than behind it.
Exactly.
It ain't me it ain't me it ain't me it ain't me that's when the passion and the The unbridled craziness needs to, like, be smoldering.
And part of that has to do with just knowing it to the point where, like, you're not second-guessing.
Dustin m.
This whole process has taught me that the dream's not gonna come to me.
And so I'm gonna pull out every trick in my bag.
The key it felt like I'm stretching a little bit.
As your coach, I'll tell you it sounds fantastic, so Okay, cool.
Just trust it as much as you can.
This song Obviously, as he can tell you Lives and dies by the conviction.
You know, I know James probably isn't totally comfortable 'cause he is more on the country end.
But part of being truly great, I think, is being able to adapt.
You know, and, Dustin, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you feel really comfortable, and sometimes both can be a problem.
Right.
It's such a simple anthem.
And so I want you guys to meet up in the middle of, like, embellishment and And sticking to the program.
It isn't that one's better than the other.
It's just different approaches to the same thing.
It ain't me it ain't me it ain't me it ain't me I ain't no fortunate one they did a great version of my song.
I'm proud of that.
I don't know how he's gonna make a choice.
We did it again.
Levine/fogerty are crushing it! There you go.
It ain't me coming up I ain't no fortunate one more explosive battles Walking in Memphis oh, in Memphis that force our coaches to make surprising decisions.
Who is the winner of this battle? And later The biggest steal of the night.
Yeah! Whoa! This is "the voice" welcome back.
It's the night of their battle, and Dustin and James are ready to take the stage.
There's definitely pressure going into the battles.
I've really been connecting with the lyrics, so I'm just gonna go out there and show Adam what he wants to see.
I'm a country singer singing a rock song, so I really will have to step up my game.
My sons are gonna be in the audience, and it means so much to me that they're here.
This is something that I am doing for them.
Going voice to voice from team Adam, it's the Florida barber and soul rocker Dustin monk Versus the former paramedic and family man James dupré! Let's have a good time, brother.
Love you, brother.
Let the battle begin.

Phew! All right, coaches, what did you think of that? Blake Shelton, let's start with you.
I think James overall was the most consistent singer just then.
I mean, it was just really good pitch.
And Dustin might have hit one or two strange notes, but Dustin took a lot more risk.
But James was toeing the line there, so If that helps you at all.
Thank you, Blake.
Pharrell.
I felt like your performance showed a lot of heart, but then your performance showed a lot of precision.
I probably would lean with James, but you should allow your body to be as free as your voice is when you sing.
Thank you.
Thank you, coach pharrell.
Gwen.
I really enjoyed that a lot.
I think that, Dustin, your stage performance was a little bit more electric, a little more all over the place with your body.
But I have to say, for me, I was getting a little more captivated by James just because your voice was so effortless.
I just think that you turn into, like, a real star.
Thank you, Gwen.
Adam, great battle, tough decision.
Give us some thoughts.
A little bit of the backstory of this is that John fogerty was Was helping us out, advising these guys and advising me.
So, these guys had the unique opportunity to be doing the song in front of the guy that wrote the song.
And all the things that we discussed were executed beautifully.
Fantastic job.
Dustin, I was so taken by what you do.
There's a willingness to go for it, and I think that's what everybody was responding to.
I commend you for that.
James, you come from a totally opposite school.
You know, you're very composed, and your voice fills the room effortlessly.
And I don't think that it's bad to be either one of you guys, you know? All right, Adam, it's time.
Who is the winner of this battle? I thought you guys absolutely rose to the occasion, the both of you, and I'm super proud of you guys.
But the winner of this battle Is James.
James, r in the battle round for team Adam, moves on to the knockouts! Love you, brother.
Congratulations.
Adam.
I thought James did an amazing job.
I know it wasn't an easy choice to make, but I just went with my gut, and I think that, when comfortable, he's really gonna shine.
Thank you so much.
Congrats, man.
I feel like all the hard work that I've done for this song has paid off, you know, and God.
I can't believe it.
Oh, geez.
Oh, my God.
Very proud of him That he made it through all this, and very happy.
So glad y'all were able to be here.
Yes.
Dustin, anything you want to say to your coach? Thank you so much - Aww.
- Oh, man.
For this whole experience.
Thank you, guys.
Come here, bro.
Come here.
Ladies and gentlemen, a big hand and thank-you to Dustin monk.
Thank you so much, man.
Hey, you guys were You guys were equally great.
You have everything to be proud of, all right? Thank you.
Dustin m.
I'm gonna go back to barbering and then probably playing some gigs.
And this is just only the beginning for me, you know? Good luck to you, brother man.
Thank you.
Dustin was really amazing.
James, though, just drew me in the whole performance, and I feel like Adam really did make the right decision.
James is a killer.
I was so captivated by his singing.
I wasn't even looking at his movements.
All you got to do is this with that voice.
They'll never love you like I can, can, can no, no, they will never love you one love you can listen to tonight's battle performances on apple music No blouse or buy them on iTunes.
'Cause, baby, there ain't no Mountain high enough still to come This is your shining moment.
If you nail it, you're not going home.
Brad paisley helps Blake's artists prepare for an epic battle She said, "tell me, are you a Christian, boy?" I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" Walking in Memphis wow.
Then impresses our coaches.
The fact that one of you guys is gonna be available right now blows my mind.
You're both two of the best singers in this competition.
So, let's party.
This is "the voice" welcome back to night one of the battles.
Let's see where our coaches' teams stand.
Adam picked pop singer Jordan Smith and country artist James dupré.
Gwen advanced indie artist Ellie Lawrence and stole R&B artist Regina love from team Adam.
Blake kept country singer Zach seabaugh, and pharrell picked R&B singer mark hood What?! And stole indie vocalist Tim atlas from team Gwen.
Now let's take a look at the final battle pair of the night from team Blake 35-year-old Barrett baber from fayetteville, Arkansas, versus 35-year-old Dustin christensen from orem, Utah.
Our plane hydroplaned off the runway and burst into flames.
After surviving a tragic accident, high-school drama teacher and family man Barrett baber came to "the voice" to prove something to his children.
You can overcome immense tragedy in your life and still do something great.
What did I do? He got his wish during his blind audition when he convinced all four coaches to push their buttons.
What did I say? Yes! God bless you! Whoo! I feel like I'm watching garth Brooks in concert.
I pick Blake.
Dustin christensen put his master's degree in business aside to pursue music.
Dustin c.
There's not another opportunity for me on this level.
I feel like this is my time.
Will I see you tonight when he took the blind-audition stage, he also turned all four chairs.
On a downtown train? Man, I thought you were fantastic, Dustin.
I really love what you did.
Your voice it sounds like Neil diamond back there.
Yeah.
Oh, thank you.
You have a beautiful, talented voice, and I'd love to work with you.
Who do y'all think Dustin should pick as his coach? I mean, can you just My my fans over here.
I pick Blake.
Yes! What's up? How's it going? Yeah! All right.
Barrett, Dustin, this is Brad paisley.
What's up? Of course.
I'm here to make sure he does not screw you guys up.
Pleasure.
Blake brought in Brad paisley.
I admire him s as an artist, as a songwriter, as a vocalist.
What a great, great pick as an adviser.
When it comes to absolute, raw power vocals, it's hard to look on my team and find anybody that I can really justify putting either one of you two up against besides each other.
I mean, that's That's the truth.
I see.
What a compliment.
Wow.
I gave Barrett and Dustin "walking in Memphis" by Marc cohn.
Walking in Memphis it's a song that's also challenging.
But do I really feel the way I feel? I want to see which one of them can just destroy the song with confidence and accurately.
She said, "tell me, are you a Christian, child?" And I said, "man, I am tonight!" I grew up in Marion, Arkansas, across the river from Memphis, Tennessee.
Walking in Memphis so I've got a great connection with the song.
Barrett, what Dustin has a little bit of advantage on you is, everything he says, like, the lyric is so clear.
And the way you approach singing, sometimes it it affects your enunciation of words.
Dustin, the thing that he has on you is there's this energy.
You know what I'm saying? You got to figure out how to step up to that.
Barrett he's a fireball.
He's got a big voice.
So, for me, it's a challenge matching his energy so I don't just look like the guy that's standing in the corner on the stage.
When you do the harmony, what if you go Walking in memphi-is you just curl it up.
Then I'm walking in memphi-is yeah.
Yeah.
That's cool.
Just a little, "whoop!" Yeah, that is rad.
Okay.
Yeah.
You're a master of harmonies, too? I'm not a master of anything.
You're a master of harmony.
"Please welcome your master of harmonies" Barrett and Dustin meet with Blake and Brad for their final rehearsal with the band.
W.
C.
Handy won't you look down over me? So good.
Yeah, I got a first-class ticket what's so cool about Dustin is But I'm as blue as a boy can be His vibrato and gravel is maybe a little more unique.
Then I'm walking in memphi-is if he nails this performance, it's very possible that he would edge out Barrett.
And I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" Walking in Memphis wow! Gosh, it's great singing, man.
Dustin, energy-wise, you brought it, man.
It's like nobody lives in that range like like Dustin Mm-hmm.
That lower stuff with that vibrato and the growl.
Thank you, man.
Hey, by the way, the whole diction thing That's out the window.
You were speaking English.
Yeah, man.
Well, thank you.
"Ma'am, I am tonight.
" This is your shining moment.
Ma'am, I a-a-am tonight the "am" is what needs to hold out.
If you nail it, you're not going home.
Brad paisley said, "this is the line.
Don't mess it up," and I really took that to heart.
Christian, child?" And I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" I've got a lot of work to do to make sure that no matter what happens, I don't go home.
Dustin and Barrett, you really strengthen each other.
It's gonna be a shame when you're not singing together.
It's that good.
This may be the ultimate four-chair-turn battle.
And this is gonna be a tough decision for me.
It's the night of their battle, and Barrett and Dustin prepare to perform.
I'm 35 years old, and I think this is my last chance to do music full-time rather than going into the business world, so I need to bring everything I got.
I actually have a grasp on the value of life a little better than most.
I was given a second chance, and it has to be taken advantage of.
I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure that I overcome this hurdle in my way.
Coming up, an impossible decision for Blake I-I will agree with Adam.
That was idiotic to put you two together.
Hear, hear! Leaves our other coaches in an epic showdown.
This is "the voice" welcome back to the battle rounds.
Entering for this team Blake battle, it's the high-school drama teacher and country soul singer Barrett baber Whoo! He's a star.
Yeah.
Whoo! Yeah! Versus the Utah business grad turned folk rocker Dustin christensen! Whoo! Let's go, baby.
Let's go.
The battle starts right now.
Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded the plane touched down in the land of the delta blues in the middle of the pouring rain w.
C.
Handy won't you look down over me? Yeah, I got a first-class ticket but I'm as blue as a boy can be then I'm walking in memphi-is I was walking with my feet 10 feet off of beale whoa, walking in Memphis but do I really feel the way I fee-e-e-l? They've got catfish on the table wow.
They've got gospel in the air and reverend green be glad to see you when you haven't got a prayer whooooo mmmmm wow! Wow! Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood and they brought me down to see her and they asked me if I would come on! Do a little number wow.
So I sang with all my might she said, "tell me, are you a Christian, child?" And I said, "ma'am, I am tonight!" Walking in Memphis walking with my feet 10 feet off of beale walking in Memphis but do I really feel the way I feel? Walking in Memphis oh, in Memphis I was walking with my feet 10 feet off of beale whoa walking in Memphis walking in Memphis but do I really feel the way I feel? Put on my blue suede shoes, and I boarded the plane give it up for Barrett and Dustin I love you, bud.
You too, man.
Whoo! Whoo! Yeah! Trying to move on to the knockouts, representing team Blake.
All four coaches on their feet.
Oh, Blake, you are so screwed.
Let's see if your fellow coaches can't help you out.
Pharrell? How you doing, Dustin? Great, man.
I thought that that was, like, a phenomenal performance.
And you're someone who's mastered the difference in your tone.
And, Barrett, the way you sing it's really a big deal.
Exactly.
You're both so rad, but I think if I had to pick, I think I would've picked Barrett.
Barrett, from the moment that you stepped onstage for the blinds, I was for sure that you're, like, a professional singer.
And then you were like, "no, I'm a teacher.
" You're incredible.
Thank you.
You Your voice is crazy.
It feels so good to listen to.
That was a very incredible performance by both of you.
Thank you.
The fact that one of you guys is gonna be available right now blows my mind because you're both two of the best singers in this competition.
Dada! Yeah, that's right! Yes.
Yes.
"Dada.
" Daddy crushed it.
Blake is really just all-in-all an idiot for putting you together because I didn't spend one moment thinking who was better.
All I thought was, "these are two equals up there.
" I'm once again shocked that this is even gonna be a possibility.
So, let's party.
-Thank you.
-Thank you.
-Thank you, Adam.
Blake Shelton, you, sir, have the final decision.
Thank you, Dr.
evil.
Throw me a bone here.
Dr.
evil.
I-I will agree with Adam.
That was idiotic to put you two together.
Hear, hear! I-I'll start with Barrett He comes out here.
He's like a linebacker.
He's, like, ready to just lay somebody out.
Then you follow it up with just incredible vocals.
Yeah.
And it's a hard thing to put your finger on.
You just have that thing that nobody can explain, but, clearly, we all like it.
Dustin, even though you don't approach a performance the way Barrett does, you also destroy these performances.
And your voice is so special.
All right, Blake, I know you loved them both, but we have to find out right now who is the winner of this battle? I got to say, man, this is a It's a tie.
This is a draw.
But I have to make a decision.
The winner of this battle is Barrett.
This is how we roll Barrett's gonna move on Winner in the battle rounds for Blake Shelton.
We hanging round singing out everything on the radio congratulations, Barrett.
Yo.
Great job, man.
I chose Barrett because he's just got a really great voice that cuts through.
I love you.
Barrett is definitely a guy that's got a future in music.
He's just a special guy to be around.
This is why I'll never stop chasing what I'm doing.
Get up here, boy! I'll never stop believing in myself.
And this is why I run out to the stage and attack every performance with such energy and fervor.
Coaches, let me remind you Dustin is available to steal.
Dustin, any You got stolen! Adam levine swoops right in and steals Dustin! There's another steal! Whoa! Not so fast, Adam! Gwen's got something to say about it! Oh, man.
Congratulations, man.
Not one, but two coaches come in to swoop you up.
Dustin, I remember the moment I didn't get you, and I remember thinking to myself, "man, I wish I had lost you to a person other than Blake.
" But more importantly, I'm hoping that I can compel you to come to my team because I can't have my heart broken twice by you.
Please do not break my heart two times.
Aww! Aww! I love youAnd I want to make beautiful music with you.
All right.
Gwen, top that.
Thank you.
IWorship your voice.
That Neil diamond thing I'm such a fan of it.
I'm just thinking about what duet we're gonna do You know what I mean? Together.
Ooh! Ohh.
So, if you want to hang out with me I mean, obviously, you want to hang out with her.
Yeah, I mean, that's not even a question.
That's clearly not a contest.
This is an epic battle.
Dude, are you gonna go with superwoman or Lex Luthor sitting down there? Is that really a tough decision for you? Dustin, it's up to you.
Who's your new coach? Gwen! Gwen! Oh, my gosh.
Uh I pick Adam.
Adam levine Yes! Steals Dustin away from Blake and Gwen! Dustin now moves on to the knockout rounds.
Thank you, brother.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I got Dustin, adding another four-chair turn to my team.
His voice is just beautiful.
Dustin's gonna go very far.
Thank you, Blake.
I'm just super-excited to still be here.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
And I think Adam will be a great coach.
And I think he gets where I'm trying to go as an artist, and I think he'll be able to help me facilitate that.
Welcome to team Adam.
Thank you, man.
I'm just happy that you're finally on the right team.
-That's right.
-Thank you, man.
I'm excited about it.
What's up? Whoo! I tried for you, Gwen.
I'm sorry.
Thank you, Blake.
Lex Luthor? Such a dumbass.
