The Voice US (2011) s09e15 Episode Script

The Live Playoffs, Night 1

It all begins with what matters most, the singer's voice.
The artist can really thrive in this atmosphere.
It's a gift, seeing their dreams come true and helping them discover themselves.
It's so rewarding for me.
We've got a steal! Going into the playoffs, we all have talented people.
And they're all ready for a career in music.
Tonight, the power shifts to America as "the voice" goes live.
And anything can happen.
Come on in.
This season, each coach gets to bring back one artist that was eliminated from their team.
The talent this season is the best we've ever had.
We had to let a got of great people go, but now they get a second chance.
See who our coaches bring back as team Gwen and team Adam take the stage.
Now it's time to be an artist.
Go for it.
- The karaoke days are over.
- Before the artistis sing for your votes, they get one-on-one training from their coaches.
Style and personality are important.
People need to show that right away.
We should make it feel more modern.
That's where the emotional side - is going to come out.
- It will be the most important performance of their lives.
I never cry on the show.
But the tears are coming.
I'm like, what? That was mind blowing.
Because only three artists from each team will move on.
Oh, my God! So excited.
Adam, watch out.
- My team came to play.
- America, get ready to vote.
There is the one and only Adam levine.
The lovely Gwen Stefani.
He is pharrell Williams.
And that guy, Blake Shelton.
And team Gwen.
They're going to be taking the stage with stripped-down performances so you can see how each artist commands this stage.
Team Blake and team pharrell in the building tonight.
Give it up for them.
They'll be watching, learning and supporting.
It will be their turn tomorrow night.
Now, what you heard earlier, for the first time in "voice" history, each of our coaches has one comeback artist they've brought back to compete in the live playoffs.
A Adam, why is this the season to give one of your singers a second chance? I think they all kind of always want that to happen on the show.
There's just so much talent on such a high level, we always want to bring somebody back.
That's always the feeling that we have.
So the fact that it's actually part of the game this season is incredible.
I'm just over the moon we can do - it.
- How about you, Gwen? Why is bringing an artist back so important? I just feel so blessed to be doing this.
And bringing back that someone's so talented, and you miss them so much.
To bring them back is a dream.
- We're so excited.
- We'll find out who their comeback artist is a little further down the line.

We'll kick off the playoffs with the powerful Texas rocker and newly wed, tackling a song tonight that means a lot to him.
More now on Blaine Mitchell.
Okay, man.
What's happening? I just got married Friday.
I was about to say.
Let's see it.
Whoo! You go from your girlfriend, your fiance, to her having your name.
It's cool.
I'm singing "never tear us apart" by nxs.
Don't ask me what you know is true the song means a lot to me right now in my life.
I got married to my best friend, and she's the wind in my sails.
The wind that I have on my finger literally symbolizes like nothing will tear us apart.
I thought about this song for him the second he got on my team.
He kind of reminds me of Michael Hutchins a little bit.
He has that powerful, haunting voice.
I love that about him.
That was all the right tone.
Then when the music ends, you know And I was standing and you were there it can be huge.
More force behind it.
Forceful, thunderous.
You can't be too dramatic.
To be sitting there with Adam levine and he is saying, let me help you out with your vocals, it's like you dream of something like that.
I just think you have what it takes to show what this song means not only vocally but, emotionally and performance wise.
Because it's all about you.
You could walk into the room and be in nxs tomorrow.
I'm so pumped.
All right.
Kicking off the live playoffs, performing "never tear us apart," team Adam, please welcome Blaine Mitchell.
Don't ask me what you know is true don't have to tell you I love your precious eyes I, I was standing you were there two worlds colliding fate could never, ever tear us apart we can laugh for a thousand years if I hurt you I told you because we all have wings but some of us don't know why I was standing you were there worlds colliding they could never, ever tear us apart oh you were there two worlds colliding they could never, tear us apart you you were standing I was there two worlds colliding they could never, ever tear us apart whoa C And the live playoffs are off and running with team Adam, everybody.
Yeah! The family's in the house.
Team Adam is pumped up.
Off to a blistering start.
Let's get comments from the coaches.
Your former coach, Blake Shelton, who has probably never heard of that song.
Let's start with you.
Yes, I have.
Man, you know what, Blaine? It's like you've been it's hard to believe that you used to also do country music.
It's cool when you see the artist get with the right coach, because you've been de-hillbillied, you know what I mean? It's the perfect combination, it really is.
I hate to give any credit to Adam.
I'm going to give it all to you.
Thank you, man.
Pharrell? How are you, Blaine? I'm good, man.
How are you? I feel like that was the right song choice for you.
It's a song that gave you all the room for everyone to see that you're really a good performer.
You really convinced me that, like, you wrote the song.
Dude, that's cool.
And I know that's not necessarily the case.
But that's the signature of a great performance.
That was really good.
C Gwen, what did you think? I want you to know I have the matching outfit to that shirt.
Like the pants and everything.
That's awesome.
But I want to say what I love about you is how free you are with your body.
Like your body language is crazy.
No one can teach you that.
And that song was perfect for you, Adam.
You really killed it.
Thanks.
God.
You know, it's true that the second that Blaine came onto my team, I thought about this song.
And it's so cool when you have a vision like that, and you get to see it through.
And you were into the song.
And we talked about what it meant to you in your life.
And all these cool things kind of coming together and concealing at the right moment, man.
You're exactly where you need to be.
And I couldn't be prouder, man.
Congratulations.
Thank you, Adam.
If you want Blaine in the top 12, vote on nbc.
Com, the official voice app, or by downloading his song on iTunes.
Let's hear it for Blaine Mitchell.
When we come back, All right, everybody.
Welcome back.
We are live.
It is the playoffs.
Team Adam and team Gwen are taking the stage tonight.
Only 12 artists will advance to next week.
That means teams will be cut in half.
Wednesday will be a tough night.
Obviously, that means every one of your votes is crucial.
We'll continue now with a modern choice for the Atlanta radio show host Gwen stole from Adam during the battles.
Her name, Regina love.
I'm so excited to see what you're going to do with a modern song.
You've got the Adele song.
You're kidding me! Oh, yeah! Oh, my gosh.
I love her so much.
The song that I really wanted was Adele's song "hello.
" I want to do something new.
It can't get any newer than this.
Hello can you hear me I have covered the '70s and '80s songs.
If I were to do an album right now this is the type of music that I'd want to do.
That first chorus, the amount that you are pushing, it wasn't like as far as you can go yet.
Right.
Pace it.
Yeah.
Regina can do anything.
She reminds me of how Anita Baker was a soul singer but so in her own Lane.
People will see her differently.
She's relevant, and she could do a beautiful record.
Gwen help me embrace this spirit that I have of myself.
And never be ashamed of it.
It feels so genuine and honest.
It's just giving you the opportunity to just be you.
And for me to just learn from you.
No.
You're teaching me.
Oh, my God.
Thank you.
With "hello," please welcome Regina love.
Hello, it's me I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet to go over everything they say that time's supposed to heal you but I ain't done much healing hello, can you hear me I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be when we were younger and free I'd forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet there's such a difference between us and a million Miles hello from the other side I must have called a thousand times to tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart but it don't matter it's clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore whoa hello from the other side at least I can say that I tried to tell you that I'm sorry for breaking your heart but it don't matter it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore anymore Representing Gwen Stefani's team, that is Regina love in the live playoffs.
Regina, excellent work.
Let's get some thoughts from our coaches.
Let's start with your old coach.
You remember Adam levine, right? Hi, Regina.
I miss you.
I miss you too.
I'm so proud of you.
You know, we compete and we mess around on the show.
But at the end of the day, when somebody comes this far, and you feel like you got to be a part of it, regardless of where they wind up, look at look at this lady right here.
You're with such an amazing coach.
And I'm just still proud.
I continue to be proud of you.
So amazing, amazing job.
- Thank you.
- Pharrell? How are you doing, miss Regina love? How are you? I'm wonderful.
Man, that was moving the way that you sang that just now, because you have this room that this room this voice that fills the room.
And it's like when you're singing, you act out the parts.
Like it was just so dramatic.
And the a has to be proud of you right now.
Gwen, what did you think of Regina tonight? You know what? I'm just so honored to be part of this journey with you, because it's like you're you know, against all odds, like you're here.
And it's amazing.
And, Adam, you're incredible for recognizing how talented she is and getting her on the show.
I'm just learning so much from you, watching you pray right before you sang that, and then watching you just go into like just pure you channel.
It's so beautiful.
And it's so real.
- So congratulations.
- Thank you, coaches.
If you want Regina in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
Com, the voice Facebook page, the voice app, or downloading the song on iTunes.
Give it up for Regina love.
When we come back, Keith Welcome back to the live playoffs.
Crucial show for our artists and also for you at home.
Starting tonight, any artist in the top 10 in the iTunes singles chart at the close of voting, that is noon eastern time tomorrow, will have their iTunes downloads multiplied by 10.
That could be just what your favorite needs to advance to next week's live top 12 show.
Now our performances rocker and family man taking on a classic, Keith semple.
I'm here doing this for my family.
My second child is due in February.
It's a lot of pressure.
So I have to bring it on.
Have you been back to Ireland? No.
But they've been supporting me.
I've done a lot of interviews there.
It's great to have the backing of the uk again, because I had that before when I was in a boy band when I was younger.
I had a number two on the charts.
I have a gold disk on my wall.
But, you know, it just didn't work out.
I've been in the business 17 years.
And so to be in "the voice" playoffs is pretty much right up there.
I'm the one who wants to be I'm the one Keith is singing "to be with you.
" You feel it too you have a really cool, gutsy, unique voice.
It's the perfect thing for him.
In the end, a little more in the nose.
That will help you stab at that one line better.
Okay.
My only concern about doing the '80s rock stuff is that people are going to think that's what I am.
You could argue that, but you could also argue if you find your vein, you find your line, you want to be that person that nobody else is messing with.
You have your own thing going on.
Keith is a rocker right now.
This is a perfect song for him and the perfect moment.
This is one of those songs that's a huge hit, but you listen to it again, and it really hollywds up.
This is like a ballad for the ages.
This is the right thing, - trust me.
- Singing "to be with you," please welcome Keith semple.
Hold on, little girl show me what he's done to you stand up, little girl a broken heart can't be that bad when it's through it's through fate will twist the both of you so come on, baby come on over let me be the one to hold you I'm the one who wants to be with you yeah deep inside I hope you'll feel it too you'll feel it too waited on a line of Greens and blues waited on that line yeah just to be the next to be with you why be alone when we can be together, baby you can make my life worth while I can make you start to smile yeah, when it's through, it's through and fate will twist the both of you come on, baby come on over let me be the one to show you I'm the one who wants to be with you I'm the one deep inside I hope you'll feel it too you'll feel it too, oh waited on a line of Greens and blues waited on that line just to be the next to be with you I'm the one who wants to be with you deep inside I hope you feel it too deep inside, you'll feel it too I've waited on that line yeah, just to be the next to be with you just to be the next to be with you Keith semple, everybody, from team Adam in the live playoffs.
Nice job, Keith.
Took us right back to 1991 with that one.
Blake Shelton, what did you think, sir? I've heard of that song.
I know you have.
It's a miracle! I had a guy on this show several seasons ago named Cole, and we did that song.
And I worry about I worried then, and I don't worry as much now, because, Keith, you're such a good singer.
But it has those gaps in it where the background singers are really singing the chorus.
But you're such a good singer and such a good ad libber, that you filled in those gaps and filled in those holes.
So good job, dude.
Man, that's a really good song.
Thank you.
Gwen? Well, pretty much Blake Blake pretty much said everything I was going to say.
Thanks.
But you know what I love about you? Where your voice sits, like the tone of your voice is so beautiful.
And it's kind of you keep thinking it's going to like crack or mess up, and it's so high up there.
It's so beautiful.
And, again, that is a lot of pressure to have those gaps and like still have to man the stage and still be interesting.
And I think you did a really good job.
Thanks.
Let's talk to your coach, Adam.
You know, we talked a lot.
I'm going to tell you why I really loved that for you, Keith.
This is kind of the first moment we have had where you're starting to develop an identity for yourself as a singer.
Up until this point, there's been battles and knockouts.
This is the moment for to you step out and do your thing and at least represent what your thing is.
And I love the fact that the best, most consistent run of, you know, you constantly kind of reinstating your identity, and identity being the key here.
You really kind of showed people tonight with the song like who you were and what you wanted to do and what you wanted to accomplish.
And I think that's the perfect thing for you to do right now.
- So awesome job.
- If you want Keith in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, the official "the voice" app or downloading Keith's song on iTunes.
Give it up for Keith semple.
Coming up, team Adam's fiery country singer shelby brown takes on a classic.
And still later, korin bukouski will take the stage.
And Gwen reveals her in comeback artist.
I'm coming to you backstage from "the voice.
" I love how you're bringing the drama.
Every Monday, I'll be kicking it here with the artists to give you an inside peek at what they're wearing.
Loving the leather look.
And talking trends with all-star guests.
We're rocking the metals today.
Welcome back.
We're live in Los Angeles.
The playoffs going down tonight.
If you like what you hear, you can listen to all of the live playoff songs on apple music.
We continue now with team Adam's only country singer, 17-year-old Alabama spitfire shelby brown.
What's going on? I play back at my bowling alley now like once a week, but you can't get in anymore because it's like packed.
You're kind of a big deal now.
People come up to me all the time and say, I sure hope that Shelton steals you.
Too late for that.
You're not going anywhere.
I'm extremely overwhelmed by the amount of support I've had at the bowling alley.
Each week, the audience got bigger.
P people were driving from Missouri to Alabama.
That's pretty cool.
You're no good, you're no good she's singing "you're no good.
" Linda ronstadt perfectly bridged the gap of being country and rock and pop.
I just want the energy to build.
I want to really get to a huge moment at the end, where you're going off on this person.
I'm telling you now, baby and I'm going my way the way you were just out of body right there, that's why I fought so hard to be on my team.
You can't be a better singer that you are.
I really thought you were more interested in my talent than what genre I sang.
Your job is to sing the music you love.
My job is to coach you so you can do that the best you can.
Every stage, I've gained more confidence whether it's stage presence or vocal confidence and how I look and represent myself.
I really hope that the people see that.
With "you're no good," here she is, shelby brown.
Feeling better now that we're through feeling better 'cause I'm over you I learned my lesson it left a scar now I see how you really are you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I'm gonna say it again you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I broke a heart that's gentle and true well I broke a heart over someone like you I'll beg his forgiveness on bended knee I wouldn't blame him if he said to me you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I'm gonna say it again you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I'm telling you now baby and I'm going my way forget about you baby 'cause I'm leaving to stay you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I'm gonna say it again you're no good you're no good you're no good baby you're no good I'm going to say it again you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby you're no good oh no you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby you're no you're no good Whoo! Shelby brown, everybody.
Family in the house.
Where did that and from? - I don't know.
- Different from rehearsal.
Yeah.
I was telling shelby that was different than rehearsal, man.
Really just went for it.
Good for you.
Blake, what did you think? I think that was really, really good.
And it pisses me off, shelby.
You know what? Your voice has a it's like it has a break in it.
It's like Trisha yearwood's voice and Carrie Underwood could have a voice together, that's what it would be like.
Have you ever heard of one of those two people? Just get back to talking to shelby.
It's still not right that you're not on my team, but I'll - let it go.
- Pharrell? I thought that was good, man.
I just love I have liked you ever since the blinds.
I always thought your voice was super strong.
The one thing I really loved at the very end is when you total let loose and let that really long note just go and show all of that like texture in your voice at the very end.
But overall, the performance was great.
I actually think this was one of your best performances yet.
Thank you.
Adam? Hi, shelby.
Hey.
How are you feeling? Great.
You're feeling great? Yeah.
Oh, man.
I absolutely adore you.
And I think that you just crushed it.
So hard tonight.
Unbelievable.
Thank you.
I wanted to tell you that, first of all, I just wanted to say before I run out of time, this girl is 17 years old.
And the reason why that is such a big deal is because your ability and where you came, you started off amazing.
But the fact that you've gotten even more amazing is a testament to how special you are and how talented you are.
Thank you for making my job very - easy, shelby.
- If you want shelby in the top 12, vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, "the voice" official app, or on iTunes download her song.
- Give it up for shelby brown.
- Welcome back.
Live playoffs happening tonight.
We'll continue now with korin bukouski.
We are born innocent I gave korin "adia" by Sarah mclachlan.
If you were making a record, would you do something like this? Yeah, absolutely.
It has a lot of substance.
That's what I see you doing.
Thank you.
I want to see more intention from the lyrics.
I think that because of your style of singing, you have to go into that low tone in the verses and then go for the high.
That's where the emotional side is going come out.
It should be way down here.
Adia, I do believe I failed you her singing is so powerful.
I know what I need to do now.
I think the next thing to talk about is style and what you're going to wear.
She needs to quickly evolve so people will go on that journey with her.
I brought my style team in.
I want to see people surprised with your style.
Hair, what are you thinking? You could lose some of that.
Last time I did this, I was getting my appendix out.
Are you ready? Yes.
Here we go.
You know, Gwen believed in me through this whole competition.
She's helped me grow so much as an artist.
I really love working with her.
Singing "adia," please welcome korin bukouski.
Adia I do believe I failed you adia I know I've let you down don't you know I tried so hard to love you in my way it's easy let it go we are still innocent believe me, adia we are still innocent it's easy, we all falter does it matter adia I thought that we could make it but I know I can't change the way you feel I leave you with your misery a friend who won't betray I pull you from your tower I take away your pain and show you all the beauty you possess if you'd only let yourself believe that we are born innocent believe me adia we are still innocent it's easy, we all falter does it matter we are born innocent believe me adia we are still innocent it's easy, we all falter but does it matter Give it up for korin bukouski.
Feeling good? Levine you think? How are you doing? Good.
That was so cool.
I want to compliment the both of you, when we listening to singers, especially on our team, it's so cool when you discover something new about someone's voice.
I think even people at home when they pick up on that evolution and change, I think that's the coolest thing for you to be able to accomplish as a singer.
I heard new things about your voice.
A lot of strength in your voice I had never heard before.
- So amazing job.
- Thanks, Adam.
Blake Shelton.
Hey.
First of all, I think that the last time you cut somebody's hair on this show, Gwen, they won.
Yes! I mean, I ended up with the person, but they ended up winning.
Oh, my God.
I hate him so much.
I'm sorry, friend.
Anyway, you know what, great job.
Great job connecting with that song.
I mean, that's the most important thing.
You definitely connected with that song.
- Great job, sis.
- All right, korin.
Let's see what your coach has to say.
Gwen? You look so beautiful.
So beautiful.
And I have to say I thought this songs, like I love this song so much.
And I really thought, God, this is perfect for her.
But when you first tried it, it was really challenging.
And I didn't know what was going to happen.
But to see you tonight really embrace the song and really vocally just give it your own twist, you know what I mean, with your own just give it your personality.
It was so beautiful.
And you just look like you're growing right before our eyes and blossoming into this beautiful person.
- Thank you.
- If you want korin in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, the official "the voice" app, and downloading her song on itune.
Welcome back to the live playoffs.
For the first time in "the voice" history, the coaches are each bringing back an eliminated singer for a second chance to compete in the live playoffs.
And possibly go on to win it all.
It's new for us.
We're excited about it.
Now is the time we'll reveal Gwen's comeback artist.
Gwen, tell us who you decided to bring back and why.
I'm so excited.
I had an artist that I really connected with this season.
I actually felt like I saw a lot of myself in her.
She is quite quirky and lively.
My comeback artist is Ellie Lauren.
Let's look at your rehearsal with Ellie.
I brought you back because there's just something really unique about you that I really connect to.
Like this kind of oddball, born into a place where you don't really belong and you need to kind of shine brighter.
Ellie has such a great personality and so far she hasn't shown her full potential.
You were one of the most downloaded performances.
What? Yeah.
I feel like sometimes you're holding back.
You need to be what your hair looks like, you know what I'm saying? Because that's who you are.
After you got picked, and you're like, that's the when you're twang is coming out and you're being free, that's what we love.
I have struggled so long to get recognition where I'm from.
This whole journey on "the voice" has changed my life.
It's okay to be 100% me.
I love the rap and all of that stuff.
But save it until the end.
Really approach the verses to tell the story, theatrical, like you're in a movie.
All of that quirky personality is great.
It has a country feeling to it.
And you have so much attitude too.
Punk rock and country.
It's kind of where you're from.
I think you should take that off.
I think you should be sexy and kind of tomboyish.
After being sent home, I know how that feels and I don't want it to happen again.
You can bring your personality and your story.
That's why you're here.
With "x's and o's," please welcome Ellie Lauren.
I had me a boy showed him all the things that he didn't understand whoa then I let him go and I was brought in California they were cursing my name hey, hey one, two, or three they are going to run back to me because I'm the best baby one, two, or three they are going to run back to me they always want to come but they never want to leave x's and the o's x's and o's I had a summer lover down in new Orleans my, my oh well, I get high and I love to get low the heart's breaking and the heads just roll you know, that's how the story goes well, I said now one, two, three they are going to run back to me climbing all the mountains and sailing all the seas one, two, three they are going to run back to me they always want to come but they never want to leave my x's and the o's my x's and the o's x's and o's and I said x's and o's That is Ellie Lawrence.
She is the comeback artist for team Gwen.
Good job.
You're back.
You are back.
Welcome back.
You were eliminated.
Now you're back thanks to your coach.
We'll hear from you in a second.
Adam levine? You're back.
How awesome must it have been to get that phone call to come back.
I died a little bit.
I love this that this is happening.
And you picked a really great time to have your best performance.
I thought you did a great job.
I really did.
It finally feels like you found something that you do, you know, that's your thing.
I think a lot of times on the show, that's a struggle.
How do you find your thing.
This felt like just that.
So great job.
Thank you.
Now to Blake.
Hi, Ellie.
Hi.
I'll make this really simple for you.
That's my favorite performance of the night so far.
Really.
Don't make me pee my pants right now.
I love how free you are on stage.
It doesn't seem overproduced, the way your voice shreds when you get up there and your voice gets high.
That was just a really great performance.
Congratulations.
- Wow.
- Thank you, Blake.
How did you feel, pharrell? How does it feel to be back? It's amazing.
I can't even right now.
I just can't.
I like how you just you just had yourself a really good time.
And toward the end, like just standing there, like turning your head at the very end of the beat, I'm like, okay, cool.
It's your stage.
It's fine.
Congrats, man.
Thank you.
Let's go to your coach, Gwen.
How did she do? That was awesome.
Do you want to know why? You manned the stage.
You came out and you gave your personality.
That's what I knew you had in you.
It's more about the personality.
And you were working.
You were comfortable.
It felt like your show.
Like it felt like we were there.
So congratulations.
I'm so glad I brought you back.

Don't go anywhere.
We have another big performance right away.
But first, give it up for Ellie Lawrence.
Thank you, Ellie.
Like I was saying, we continue quickly now with a former p.
R.
Rep who is showing a brutally honest side tonight.
Here's more from jeffery Austin.
Say you love me to my face I will be singing "say you love me.
" You're developing who you are, an artist who wants to be vulnerable.
I can see the record you want to make.
Back in my hometown, I just did my first show ever.
My mom was sitting there crying.
Oh.
She has always wanted that for me.
It gave me chills when you told me that.
I'm like, whoo! He is really incredible, jeffery.
Kind of like a Sam Smith vibe.
When you don't perform as much, there's a tiny percent that I don't believe.
It's just being honest with yourself.
This is about someone that is about to fall in love.
And I've been there.
The first time I ever fell in love with someone, I was so unsure about whether or not he, you know, felt it back.
And eventually, he did say it, but it was via text.
No way! That can't happen again.
Should we talk a little bit about what you're going to wear? Yeah.
Because I had an idea, like a black suit.
Because if you interpret the song, it's time to get formal in this relationship.
I think that's spot on.
I'm going to pull back some of the bricks and go back to the emotional place that I closed up to be able to communicate an honest performance.
With "say you love me," here is jeffery Austin.
Say you love me to my face I need it more than your embrace just say you want me that's all it takes heart's getting torn from your mistakes 'cause I don't wanna fall in love if you don't wanna try but all that I've been thinking of is maybe that you're mine baby it looks as though we're running out of words to say and love's floating away someone told me love controls everything but only if you know 'cause I don't wanna fall in love no, no, no, no, no if you don't wanna try 'cause all that I've been thinking of is maybe that you're mine you're, mine 'cause I don't wanna fall in love if you don't wanna try and love's floating away won't you stay won't you say stay / Team Gwen on a roll right now in the live playoffs.
That is jeffery Austin.
Nice job.
Adam? Hard to believe this guy, before his fine audition in this show, didn't sing on a stage for six years.
Unbelievable.
Great job.
What did you think, Adam? Well, as much as it hurts me to have to admit this, because you aren't on my team, jeffery, so it makes me sad, but I don't really care at the end of the day.
You could that was first of all, don't even clap yet because that was a great performance.
But even more importantly, than how great that was, you could really win this whole thing.
Wow.
I think you've got I think that you've got it all.
I think as long as you keep listening to this wonderful woman right here Absolutely.
You're just going to continue to soar.
Oh, my God, man, wow.
- Thank you so much.
- Pharrell? Hey, man.
First of all, easily the best performance of the night.
Yeah.
Wow.
Thank you.
And she was totally right to tell you to take an emotional path.
Because I felt like you like emotionally dug the song and you dug the lyric, and you actually just pulled out so much in that moment.
Like the dynamics were great.
Like this is your night so far, buddy.
Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
- Gwen Stefani, your comeback artist.
Blake says that's the performance of the night.
And pharrell said it's the performance of the night.
I'm going to watch this whole thing.
Watch.
What did you think of jeffery? Seriously, right now, like what was that? You were not like a voice contestant.
You were an artist, just purely emoting beautiful, beautiful, talented gifted voice.
Thank you.
I am so winning right now.
I can't even believe it.
- I'm so excited.
- If you want jeffery in the top 12, vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, the official voice app or download his iTunes song.
Give it up for jeffery Austin.
Thank you.
Coming up, Braiden welcome back.
Live playoffs happening tonight here in Los Angeles.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am here with season six finalist, the lovely Christina grimmie good to see you.
- Good to see you too.
- We saw you reporting outside on the style here on the show.
How is our style doing? Amazing as you can see.
I'm having so much fun.
And the fans know that every single night is a great night for style on "the voice.
" And I'll be here live every single week reporting on all the action from the kohl's green room.
Good to have you here.
Everything good? Oh, amazing.
Hi, Adam.
I miss you! Great to have you.
Let's continue now with the show.
We have the youngest artist in the show this year, 15-year-old high school sophomore and indy artist.
Here's more now on Braiden sunshine.
What have you been doing since I saw you last? I did Mountain zone again by my favorite band, blues traveller.
They said, let's get together.
And I went to Las Vegas and played with them at the Brooklyn bowl.
To be able to play with them, to be able to hang out with them, it was like a dream.
It was so cool.
I wanted to give you a song that showcases your voice and the tone and how beautiful it is.
I gave Braiden "everything I own" by red.
The idea of a young kid doing such a powerful song, I just loved the contrast of it.
And I would give anything I own in his case, like this cool idea of kind of transforming is exciting.
Because, you know, on the show, you only have a certain amount of time to really evolve.
And that is going to define who you become.
Just to have you back again your voice is so beautiful.
And in control on those verses.
Now the chorus, believe it or not, is kind of rock.
You need to get really passionate.
You took something for granted, and now it's gone.
You're trying to say that you would do anything to get it back.
Being so young, there's only so much that I've been able to experience in my life.
I feel if I try and take something personal and tell a story about it that will really get people to feel what I'm feeling.
Make sure that this is so emotional that people can't even believe you can dig that deep inside.
With "everything I own," here is Braiden sunshine.
You sheltered me from harm kept me warm, kept me warm you gave my life to me set me free, set me free the finest years I ever knew were all the years I had with you and I would give anything I own I'd give up my life my heart, my home I would give everything I own just to have you back again is there someone you know your loving them so but taking them all for granted you may lose them one day someone takes them away and they don't hear the words you long to say I would give anything I own I'd give up my life my heart, my home I would give everything I own just to have you back again and I would give everything and I would give up my life my heart, my home and I would give everything I own just to have you back again And the team Gwen artists keep it coming tonight in the live playoffs.
That is Braiden sunshine.
Good job, young man.
Come on down here.
Adam levine, talk to me about this young man.
Hey, Braiden.
I can't see you.
I don't have my glasses.
Well, I'm right here.
How are you doing? My wife is like obsessed with you.
My wife loves you.
She talks about you probably a little too much for my own comfort.
I'm going to be totally honest.
I think that you're spectacular.
And that's a beautiful song.
Beautiful song.
I'm going to be slightly critical, and don't hate me.
But I felt like what you wanted to do tonight, you didn't like the song, like you wanted to do more than what the song was doing.
And I know that it's a beautiful, tender song.
I know that this is not the last of you.
You're going to be around forever.
Hey, how are you doing? Hey.
You can see.
But that's the only thing I wanted to hear more of.
And I'm being stupidly critical.
I love you both.
That's just me being selfish.
Gwen is going to kick your ass in the commercial break for that.
Man, you know what? You've been one of my favorites since the battle rounds.
And then again in the knockouts.
It's like, man, every time you step up to the plate, you step it up a little bit more.
And I know what Adam is saying.
Like this isn't this wasn't the over the top performance that we're used to seeing from you.
But, man, you're always consistent.
You're always really good when you get on the stage.
And you always look different every time you get on the stage too on top of that.
So keep them guessing.
That's because the coach is Gwen Stefani.
I feel so crazy like so protective over you.
And you did a beautiful job tonight.
Your voice is just my favorite, favorite.
It's just so tender and beautiful.
And I love the end.
I thought you got wild onstage and emotional.
And you looked so, so cute tonight.
Thank you.
If you want Braiden in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, the official voice app, or by down loading Braiden's song on iTunes.
Give it up for Braiden sunshine.
When we return, a And we are back with the live playoffs.
Finally, if you've got a song idea for our artists to perform, just use the suggest a song feature on the official voice app powered by Nissan.
We're going to continue now with the Brooklyn singer/songwriter that Adam couldn't wait to steal from pharrell during the knockout rounds.
Here's more on Amy vachal.
This is my first rehearsal with Adam.
I am nervous and excited to see where he wants to take it with me.
Hi.
I'm so honored and happy to be here.
Thank you for stealing me.
I can't believe that you were available to steal.
I wanted to get aim fre the beginning.
It was destiny.
It must have been.
When I was, I think, 13, I stole my brother's maroon five album and just played it on repeat.
That mikeakes me think of wh I was when I did it.
Young and angry.
To get that chance is so unreal.
I will feel a glow Amy is singing "the way you look tonight" by Frank Sinatra.
She's got jazz chops as a singer.
And makes really cool choices.
I just want to keep building upon that.
There's more to your voice, I think, that you're starting to figure out and discover.
This is the moment for you to dig really deep.
I love Amy winehouse, because it's not like she had this massive range.
But she would sing one note and it would have so much power because of the purpose she sang it with was so great.
Don't be afraid to go for it.
You can sing those notes.
I know you can.
I need to trust Adam and deliver the best performance I have ever again.
This is where the show gets so competitive.
You just have to go for it.
Yeah.
Singing "the way you look tonight," here is Amy vachal.
Some day when I'm awfully low when the world is cold I will feel a glow just thinking of you and the way you look tonight yes, you're lovely with your smile so warm and your cheeks so soft there is nothing for me but to love you and the way you look tonight with each word your tenderness grows tearing my fear apart and that laugh wrinkles your nose touches my foolish heart lovely, never, never change keep that breathless charm won't you please arrange it 'cause I love you and the way you look tonight mmm, mmm just the way you look tonight That is Amy vachal.
Representing both team Adam and Brooklyn tonight on "the voice.
" Very nice job.
You look lovely tonight.
Blake Blake, some thoughts, sir? Amy, I don't know what the chances are, but please do a Christmas album some day.
Please, do a Christmas album some day.
You have the perfect voice for that, crooner type of thing, man.
And we've heard you do a lot of different types of things.
As you go through this competition, sometimes you just get handed something and you have to do it.
But that felt like home to me for you.
That was really good, sis.
- Good job.
- Thank you, Blake.
Your former coach, pharrell.
Hi.
Listen, Amy, congratulations.
That was just effortless.
The way that you just sang your way around the stage and those beautiful, super colorful runs that were just like effortless.
That was crazy.
And, yes, I'm sad that I lost you, but I'm so happy because I feel like you could win.
I really do.
Like you're awesome.
Thank you, pharrell.
I know my time is up.
But that was awesome.
Like that could not have been - any more beautiful.
- Adam levine, pick up on that.
Thanks, bro.
Yeah.
She's yours.
I'm going to give you a very pointed, sort of the reason why that was we're not going to talk about the technical stuff and all of that boring mumbo jumbo.
We're just going to talk about one thing.
That was not "the voice.
" That was watching an artist perform on the show.
And that's why we talked a lot about what this needs to be for you, and that's precisely what it was.
You absolutely did the best job you could possibly do.
And I'm so, so thrilled.
So happy.
- Thank you.
- If you want Amy in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
Com, "the voice" Facebook page, the official voice app, or by downloading Amy's song on iTunes.
Give it up for Amy vachal, everybody.
Coming up after the break, a surprising song choice for team Gwen's Hungarian pop sensation, Viktor kiraly.
Welcome back.
Live playoffs happening tonight on "the voice.
" Teams are going to be cut in half on Wednesday, which is crazy to think about, because there's been so many great performances tonight.
We still have tomorrow night to get through.
So please vote and make sure that your favorite artist if you're watching them on the show and you want them to continue to make the top 12, you have to vote.
We're going to continue now with the newest member of team Gwen.
The smooth-singing Hungarian pop singer from New York, here's more on Viktor kiraly.
It's weird, right? Now you're on my team.
Growing up we would just listen to your music all the time.
Viktor kiraly is my new guy on my team.
Super talented.
He made it as a pop singer in Hungary.
So that gives him a lot of potential to make it here.
Can you talk in Hungarian so I can hear what it sounds like? Do you want me to say I love you? If that's easy.
[ Speaking in a foreign Good.
In Hungary, they are so proud of me that I even got the chance to go onto national talk shows.
They know that I am here fighting for my dream.
Been around the world I picked the song "all around the world.
" That song is a perfect blend of what I love, what he could be doing.
It's such a well-crafted, perfect song about, you know, love lost.
I don't know, it just gets me right here.
I have always wanted to be a soul singer.
I grew up listening to Stevie wonder.
I wonder if we should change any of the sound to make it feel more modern.
Like a deangelo style.
I want you to chart with this song.
I want people to re-fall in love with this song as you do it.
You know what I'm saying? It even makes more sense when you think of your story to do this song this way.
You want to showcase as a soul singer, which you've been yearning to do your whole life.
Yeah.
Right there should be your big moment.
I've been around the world and I, I, I oh, my gosh.
I'm so excited! With "all around the world," here is Viktor kiraly.
Been around the world and I I can't find my baby I don't know where I don't know why why she's gone away and I don't know where she can be, my baby but I'm going to find her we had a quarrel and I let myself go I said so many things things she didn't know and I was oh, oh, oh so bad and I don't think she's coming back, coming back she gave the reason the reason she should go and she said so many things she never said before and she was oh, oh, oh so mad and I don't think she's coming back coming back I did too much lying too much wasted time now I'm here, I'm crying been around the world and I, I, I I can't find my baby I don't know where and I don't know why and I don't know where she can be but my baby but I'm gonna find her find her I've been around the world and I, I, I I can't find my baby I don't know where and I don't know why I can't find my baby and I don't know where she is ooh, my baby but I'm going to find her find her I've been all around the world looking for my baby I've been around the world, baby, baby but I'm going to find her find her oooh Viktor kiraly, team Gwen in the live playoffs, everybody.
Thank you.
Nice job, Viktor.
Let's start with your former coach, Mr.
levein.
You did this like move.
Did you see that first move he did? I don't want to even pretend to know how to do that.
Blake can do that move really, man, it was kind of like all of a sudden, here he was.
Like Viktor has arrived.
Yes, you were on my team and, yes, I miss you.
But how could I be anything other than super proud and happy? You did an amazing job tonight.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Blake? I'll go out on a limb here, way out on a limb here, and say that team Gwen overall is whipping the crap out of team Adam tonight.
Team Gwen! It's a competition.
I'm just calling it like I see it, man.
Great job, dude.
Fun to watch you.
And just fun to see Gwen just whip the crap out of Adam tonight.
Man, it makes me so happy! Thank you, Blake.
Gwen, what did you think of the performance? I mean, just seeing Gwen beat the crap out of him, it makes me so happy.
Gwen? Viktor, whoa.
That was crazy.
Like it wasn't just singing.
It was a whole thing.
It was the stage.
It was the moves.
It was your outfit.
It was everything.
You did so good.
I'm so proud of you.
Thank you so much.
I'm so happy.
You helped me a lot on this song.
Thank you so much.
If you want Viktor on the top 12, you can vote for him.
Give it up for Viktor kiraly, everybody.
Coming up straight ahead, Adam reveals the eliminated artist that he is bringing back to the playoffs.
And Welcome back to "the voice.
" Ladies and gentlemen, how about a big hand for Paul and the incredible "voice" band? Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, so much.
You guys have been awesome, awesome, awesome tonight.
We appreciate it very much.
Now the time has come to reveal the eliminated singer that Adam is bringing back for the playoffs.
Adam, who is your comeback artist and why? Man, I love this kid so much.
I had a really hard time, really hard time figuring out who to bring back because I love my team so much.
But this guy, aside from being just a wonderful kid, a young kid, someone I didn't want to see go.
I was very attached so I'm bringing back chance.
Chance pena.
Let's take a look at rehearsal.
You may want to know why I brought you back.
I do.
You're very talented and you're young, you're 15.
And seeing that in you at such a young age, it's awesome.
It was hard to let you go.
But I'm so happy to bring him back.
"Barton hollow" by the civil wars is really my wheelhouse.
If I were to play at a bar or restaurant, this is the type of song that I'd play.
I'm so glad you were back.
There were always some things I wanted to get into with you.
When I first heard you sing, I really responded to how unique your tone was.
There's a cool break in your voice.
But sometimes there's too much of that.
A foundation of what it is, it's fantastic.
But you have too many sprinkles and frosting.
It's like building a cake really.
Try to build it up with the cool things that you have rather than lean on them.
There's also a lot going on in the song.
It's bluesy.
There's a lot of notes.
You have to be the centerpiece holding it all together.
The pressure is on.
I'm going to do whatever it takes to make this an amazing performance.
That was much better.
What happened, we started to see glimpses of who you are come out more when you simplify it a little bit.
Thank you.
Very happy to have you back.
It's been quite a journey, man.
With "barton hollow," here is chance pena.
I'm a dead man walking here but that's the least of all my fears ooh, underneath the water it's not Alabama Clay that gives my trembling hands away oooh please forgive me, father ain't going back to barton hollow devil gonna follow me e'er I go won't do me no good washing in the river can't no preacher man save my soul oooooh, oooooh Miles and Miles in my bare feet still can't lay me down to sleep if I die before I wake I know the lord my soul won't take I'm a dead man walking I'm a dead man walking keep walking and running and running for Miles keep walking and running and running for Miles keep walking and running and running for Miles oooooh never going back to barton hollow can't no preacher man save my soul That is chance pena, who was eliminated during the knockouts but is back tonight thanks to his coach, Adam levine.
Nice job.
Your former coach is Blake Shelton.
Blake? Hey, man, congratulations.
Thank you.
On coming back, man.
Yes, sir.
Man, I've got to say, if there's one thing that nobody can take away from you, you dump 150% of yourself into your performance.
I mean, this guy leaves nothing, nothing on the table when he's performing, man.
Good job, dude.
- Thank you.
- Chance, let's go to your coach, Adam levine.
What did you think? When you think about the kind of journey that you've had on the show, I was the only guy that turned around.
And I believed, and I still do.
I let you go.
Blake took you on his team.
You got some amazing advice from him.
You came back to my team.
For the save.
And you're thinking to yourself, man, have you been through so much already.
You have such a great like moving forward, whether it's on the show or not, who cares? You have received such an education in such a short period of time.
I think you're a wonderful human being.
I think you're a really talented kid.
And I am just always rooting for you man, no matter what the case.
I think you did a great job tonight.
Thank you very much.
If you want chance in All right.
We are back.
One more artist will perform.
And then all methods will be open for voting.
Tomorrow night, we'll return for team Blake and team pharrell's performances.
They have been here tonight watching.
Wednesday, we'll reveal your top Closing out tonight, it's team Adam's inspiring pop singer from Kentucky who's taking on Beyonce.
His name, Jordan Smith.
I can't believe how many views that YouTube clip got.
Unbelievable.
My favorite part of it is that people are talking about my story, how they can see my heart in it.
That's what I saw.
I'm glad that came through.
My hometown is going crazy over everything.
Harlan is a coal mining town.
It's part of who we are.
They are glad to see someone representing our area.
They gave me a certificate thanking me for going a good steward.
I'm never going to shut you out I'm singing "halo" by Beyonce.
I'm so inspired by the song.
It tells what kind of artist I want to be, an emotional, powerful artist.
The karaoke days are over.
Nothing about you is generic.
And I don't want it to fgeneric.
You want your own version.
And you build it slowly.
Maybe throw some strings in, some cellos.
Adam came up with the arrangement idea.
It was so cool to see that producing side of him.
He's helping me see another side of myself.
I don't want to do exactly what's conventional.
It's a risk that I'm taking that kid has got something that is so impossible explain.
You really have to hear it to understand it.
I will never cry on the show.
But that was the closest I ever came.
They were close.
They were right here.
Can you gjust give me a hug? I need what you've got.
Singing "halo," please welcome Jordan Smith.
Remember those walls I built well baby they're tumbling down and they didn't even put up a fight they didn't even make a sound I found a way to let you in but I never really had a doubt standing in the light of your halo I got my angel now it's like I've been awakened every rule I had you breakin' it's the risk that I'm takin' I ain't never gonna shut you out everywhere I'm looking now I'm surrounded by your embrace baby I can see your halo you know you're my saving grace you're everything I need and more it's written all over your face baby I can feel your halo pray it won't fade away I can feel your halo, halo, halo I can see your halo, halo, halo I can feel your halo, halo, halo I can see your halo, halo, halo oooh, oooh, oooh you're everything it's written all over your face baby I can feel your halo pray it won't fade away I can feel your halo, halo, halo baby I can feel your halo pray it won't fade away fadeaway I can see your halo I can see your halo halo oooh halo That is Jordan Smith, everybody.
Closing out night one of the live playoffs.
On "the voice.
" We don't have a whole lot of time left.
Let's get some comments from our judges.
All of the judges are giving you a standing ovation.
Pharrell, let's start with you.
I can't even sit down.
What can I say? What can I say? What can I say? Like literally, there's nothing to say except that it's totally true that God has signed your voice.
It's signed.
- Period.
- Gwen Stefani? That's crazy.
All I can think of is God as well.
All I can think of is God when he sings.
It's crazy.
Thank you.
Thank you.
That felt so good to hear.
Thank you.
To your coach, Adam.
30 seconds please.
Man, 30 seconds is not enough! Dude, okay.
I don't even want to talk about your voice, because before you even went up and performed, you're standing up there in the dark, and everyone is cheering for you like crazy.
It's like you're not you're not a singer.
You're just a figure.
Like you're a person that everybody draws this amazing energy from.
And it's like it's unlike anything I've ever, ever, ever experienced in my life.
And I'm honored to be a part of it, man.
If you want Jordan in the top 12, you can vote on nbc.
