DALY: Chart-topping pop star and Oscar-nominated actress - Nice! - Oh, my gosh.
When the band starts bangin' DALY: Legendary country-music icon, with over 11 million albums sold Yee-haw! [Laughs.]

That line was my favorite line that you sang.

KELLY: This is my first time doing battles, and I'm so excited to see people come alive 'cause they want it.
They wanna win.
They wanna advance.
DALY: Decisions This sucks.

- bUm - I'm gonna vomit.
- The steals - bigger.
- Oh! - A triple steal! - Yeah! Yeah, Kelly! DALY: The most exciting round of battles yet Yes, yes! starts right now.
It's my first time doing battles, first time getting to steal.
You seem awful happy right now.
I don't think you realize what's about to happen.
You Don't you do that to me, Shelton.
No, I You've never done this before.
It's painful.
It's hard.
No, I-I Why are you being mean to our guest? Because she's not a guest, she's my competition! [Laughs.]
You nervous.
I'm comin'.
Yeah.
She's coming.
Here we go.
You ready? Kelly.
Alicia.
Yes.
Gotta win another one.
Come on, Alicia.
Come on, come on.
Thanks.
Yeah, let me let me lead the way.
Oh, man, I got left out again! Oh, thank you, thank you.
You're my You'll always be queen.
DALY: Let's meet the first artist from Team Alicia as he learns which artist he'll be battling.
JAMAI: Before "The Voice," I was running a full singing-telegram service, singing telegrams for all occasions birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, breakups, makeups.
Girl, you're amazing I've been singing all of my life.
I've never been as nervous as I was for the blind auditions.
You got it bad When I saw Kelly and Alicia turn around, like, "Oh, snap.
It's about to go down.
" You have this variety that really is powerful, plus you have a style that's really your own.
Alicia Keys, baby.
What?! So today, I'm going to find out who I'm going to be paired with for my battle.
I can't imagine, I can't even put into my mind, like, who it's gonna be.
- Make it rain - Oh, brother! No.
Oh, make it rain Seeing Sharane pop up on that screen, I was like, "Dang, Alicia," because she might send me home.
She's amazing.
SHARANE: When the blind auditions came, it was just such a great experience, you know, 'cause I've basically lived for this moment.
I grew up in foster care with my twin sister.
When I was 10, my cousin adopted me.
But my sister got placed in group homes for reasons out of my control.
Having them take her away from me was like taking away my life.
[Voice breaking.]
I wouldn't wish that on anybody, you know? I'm sorry.
[Sniffles.]
For like four or five years of my life, I didn't even get to see my twin sister.
But ninth-grade year, we both tried out for the same choir, and we got to sing with each other.
Through all this heartbreak, I use music as my escape.
I just want to let people know you cannot give up.
Like, even though how hard life is, if you have a dream, go after it.
I'm sorry.
I'm totally gonna cry.
ALICIA: Whatever your journey has been has absolutely led you to be able to share that type of performance.
My team is full! SHARANE: The fact that I was Alicia's last pick, I would never, ever forget that moment, and I'm just so grateful.
You got it, you got it bad Oh.
[Laughs.]
When you're on the phone - You hang up and you call right back - Oh, Jamai.
He's so good! - You got it, you got it bad - Jamai has so much soul, so much power.
And his runs Oh, my God is flawless.
And me and him, we can have a run battle.
Oh, this is gonna be a good battle.
DALY: This season, Alicia chose to bring in chart-topping singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes as her adviser.
Welcome.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for being my adviser.
I'm excited.
I was telling you, I feel like I should be standing in front of you asking for advice.
You could.
Go ahead.
I could.
I mean, I might, you know? All right.
ALICIA: Shawn Mendes, he's a songwriter, a musician, a producer, plus he's 19 years old.
He has this full picture of what an artist is.
Let's do it.
Should we do it? Yeah, I would love to.
All right.
There they go.
Oh, no, you ca What's going on? What is going on? You gotta be living under a rock to not know who Shawn Mendes is.
What's up, man? Nice to meet you.
I really appreciate him as an artist.
And to see him in person, intimidating is not even the word.
You both have soulful voices, and this song has soul in it, but I felt it would be nice to see you in a new element.
Jamai and Sharane are singing "Mercy" by Shawn Mendes.
And it's crazy 'cause Shawn is right there.
It's such an honor.
You have no idea.
It's such an honor, man.
It's really an honor.
It's like, I'm singing your song.
[Laughs.]
I'm really nervous.
What do you do, are you singing to the artist? Usually, that doesn't happen very often.
I-I haven't really done that.
But as an artist, like, we're not sitting here like we wanna hear our record.
We wanna hear your version of it.
Make it you.
Could be worse you could be singing her songs.
Then you'd be really stressed out.
[Laughter.]
Do do do do Do do do do - Do do do, do do - They sound great.
Oh, my God.
Shawn Mendes.
I'm, like, really? "We're singing your song," like, "Come on.
That's already pressure.
" Yeah ALICIA: Whoo! Mercy ALICIA: Jamai and Sharane, they blew the roof off this whole place.
I said, "What?" - Yeah - Oh, no Yeah! SHAWN: Sharane is just talent.
She has control.
She knows what she wants, and she was just flawless.
I'm a puppet on your string SHAWN: Jamai, he had sheer strength, especially when it went up in the higher octave.
He was able to just shred his voice up and come back.
Yeah! Whoa.
What What made y'all actually come in here? What did you guys come in all stressed out about? You guys just slayed that.
Thank you.
I'm, like, parts where I'm like, "Damn, I should've done that on the record.
" Sharane, when you come to the "consuming all the air inside my lungs," you kind of lose the tempo a little bit.
You rush.
And then, Jamai, your range is Crazy.
way crazier than I could've ever imagined.
No idea.
When you're in that verse and Show me an open door I can't take anymore Don't be afraid to, like, throw away.
Don't feel like you have to, like, really sing.
Kind of just get really emotionally invested in that in that verse.
Y'all both know how it feels for someone to have mercy on your heart.
That tenderness is really important, so that when people are watching, they're not just thinking about acrobatics because your voices are so exceptional.
They're, like, really invested in your story.
Invested, yeah.
Show me an open door SHAWN: The song, the way I see it, is just in life, sometimes you wanna look up and be like, "Just, like, have mercy on me right now.
" Please have mercy on me And I wanted them to let the emotion just really kind of hit them.
- Take it easy on my heart - Even though you don't mean to hurt me I definitely relate this song.
You know, I was in foster care.
Like, it was a struggle, so I'm gonna pull out all my emotions and sing like my life depends on it.
That may be the coolest thing I've ever seen.
That was crazy.
That's ridiculous.
Really.
Yeah.
Jamai and Sharane sounded phenomenal together.
And all they both have to do is really make it mean something more, like what does this mean to their life and to their soul? I'll be at y'all next rehearsal within the space.
Okay.
Whoever does that is gonna win this battle.
MAN: Here we go.
Where's choreography end? Are you guys in a certain position? - It's kind of up here.
- Kind of know where you're at? ALICIA: It's really great to be here at the stage rehearsal.
This is the first time that I've been able to be a part of this.
How y'all feeling? Oh, thank you.
Ooh.
Hey.
It allows me to feel really comfortable that we get a chance to hash it out one last time before they go out there and battle it out.
- Three, two.
- All right, stand by.
Baby, please have mercy on me Take it easy on my heart It's wonderful I get to see what they chose as outfits, how they're interacting with each other.
We have the vocal coach, we have choreographers, and all of us together get to really lift it up and say, "How can we make this the craziest ever?" I remember that energy from when I left, and now it's just become more refined.
There's a real freedom to what you're doing.
Honestly, it's her.
Yes.
'Cause, like, when I hear her sing, it's just, I Right, you get pumped up.
Yeah! Like, ungh! I definitely think this battle's gonna steal the show.
It's at 100 for a long time.
Just don't forget that we want a little 50s, a little 75s, a few 85s.
Right, okay.
Mm-hmm.
I mean, there's so much power in it.
There's so much energy.
Don't try to be pretty, and don't try to be cool.
Be you.
Be raw.
Both of the artists are bringing it for real, so it's it's a hard choice.
Proud of y'all.
[Cheers and applause.]
Going head-to-head from Team Alicia, Jamai! JAMAI: I love performing, so winning this battle would make it so that I don't have to sing another telegram a day in my life.
DALY: Sharane Calister! SHARANE: Winning this battle will definitely prove I have more to offer, especially to my family.
Come on, Sharane! They know how hard I've worked for this.
They know that this would mean everything to me.
Here we go.
They're both dope.
This battle begins right now.
Do do do do Do do do do Do do do, do do Do do do do Do do do do Do do do, do do You've got a hold of me Don't even know your power I stand a hundred feet But I fall when I'm around you Show me an open door Then you go and slam it on me I can't take any more I'm saying, baby Please have mercy on me Take it easy on my heart Even though you don't mean to hurt me You keep tearing me apart Would you please have Mercy, mercy On my heart Would you please have Mercy Mercy On my heart Consuming all the air inside my lungs Ripping all the skin from off my bones I'm prepared to sacrifice my life I would gladly do it twice Consuming all the air inside my lungs Ripping all the skin from off my bones I'm prepared to sacrifice my life - I would gladly do it twice - Yeah Mercy No, no, no Oh, whoo, oh Would you please have mercy on me? I'm a puppet on your string And even though you got good intentions I need you to set me free - Yeah, yeah - I'm begging you for mercy, mercy I'm begging, begging you please, baby Oh, ooh - Mercy - Baby, I'm beggin' Baby, I'm beggin', beggin', baby Do do do do Do do do do Do do do, do do [Cheers and applause.]
Yes.
Yes, y'all, yes! Man, that trench I am feeling that trench.
You been on your trench vibe, you said.
They've been making fun of how I dress because I love that trench.
Ah.
But you don't look like that.
Well, yeah, I do.
You look like that.
[Laughs.]
I look exactly like that.
[Laughter.]
I'm just kidding! I love your track pants.
I kid, I kid.
It's Kelly.
Kelly, man.
I'm just kidding! She's wearing an Academy Award.
[Laughing.]
Okay.
She's wearing an Emmy.
It's shiny, was the joke.
But let's talk about you guys.
There were some moments with you, Jamai, where I was like, wow.
Some of those runs towards the end and the control are unbelievable.
[Applause.]
And, Sharane, you just have this fullness, this bigness in your voice that is a very special quality.
It fills a room, you know, and that's a great thing to possess.
I would say it is a dead-heat.
I choose you both.
[Laughter.]
[Cheers and applause.]
BLAKE: Jamai, I spent two months when I was 9 years old on a trampoline trying to do what you did, which is go from my knees straight into standing on my feet.
[Laughter.]
And you did that crap on a regular hard surface.
[Laughter.]
And, Sharane, you don't even need a microphone.
Like, what the hell? Both of you guys, you're incredible vocalists.
So I don't know, Alicia, what you're gonna do.
I know.
I mean, I think maybe I would go with Jamai because he did the thing that I couldn't even accomplish on a trampoline.
I mean, you can barely walk, so it's not that impressive.
I know.
KELLY: [Laughing.]
Oh, my God.
I think that y'all really complement each other.
And I think what's funny is you are different, but see how cute y'all are? See? Okay.
We just work together.
And then all of a sudden, you would just flip a switch and both of you would be like forces.
Your intensity would change.
Your eyes would change.
It was like just going back and forth to different characters, and I thought that that was really cool because that's what mercy is.
Mm.
You're in so many different places emotionally.
You have some sick, sick runs, and I loved them.
Thank you.
And you have what I love about Alicia you have this ache, this, like, "I've lived 10 lives and I'm just going on my eleventh" about your voice.
So I think I gravitate more towards you because of that, although both of you are flawless.
It was really, really good.
[Cheers and applause.]
DALY: Thank you, Coaches! Alicia, you have the final decision before we find out the winner.
ALICIA: I was, first of all, supremely proud of this battle.
Like, Shawn Mendes was our adviser.
And when he sees this back, I mean, I think he's gonna be blown away.
Jamai, you have been the shocker for me.
You have grown exponentially.
Thank you.
And, Sharane, I think you might have lived 11 lives, and you're only 24.
[Sighs.]
And, by the way, your performance I didn't get to your performance.
Oh, yeah, that.
Stellar.
[Cheers and applause.]
Oh, yeah.
Alicia, who's the winner of this battle? [Sighs.]
[Dramatic music plays.]
Doggone.
This is just The winner of this battle is Sharane.
[Cheers and applause.]
Sharane! Congratulations, you're moving on to the knockouts.
I'm so excited.
I'm so emotional.
This is everything I hoped for.
I'm proud of your bravery.
I'm really proud of you.
Thank you.
There's even more inside of you.
I'm excited for you.
Thank you so much.
You're really, really special.
She said there is more inside of me, and there is more.
I'm gonna prove it to her in the knockout round, so I can't wait.
Jamai, anything you want to say to Coach? I just really wanna thank you, Alicia, for just being genuine.
I'm proud of being able to learn from you, so I'm happy, man.
I'm I'm truly happy.
I love you! Thank you so much.
DALY: Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Jamai! ALICIA: Jamai and Sharane, I don't know if I realized it was gonna be that hard.
But Sharane is just so magnificent.
She almost has a little Beyoncé in her, you know.
And I felt like she deserves to know that life can go her way.
There's something about her voice.
It's like a It's like Ooh, it's, like, torn open.
It's the saddest story ever, but I love it.
DALY: Coming up Hi, Ms.
Julia! our superstar advisers help our coaches prepare their teams Even if you're up here, just dropping down.
Yeah.
And that makes it easier.
On a song like this, if you can hit it full-voice, hit it full-voice.
One more time One more time DALY: leading to more epic battles.
- Crazy, baby - Yeah ALICIA: The battles is one of my favorite parts of this show because you can do creative, cool things.
You guys are incredible.
You don't even get these performances at, like, award shows.
You're a star.
[Whoosh.]
DALY: That's the sound of a steal! Yes, yes, yes! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to night one of the battles, where Kelly and her adviser, platinum-selling pop superstar Hailee Steinfeld, await her first pairing.
It's lovely to hang with you.
You too.
Thanks for having me.
Yes.
I was very excited.
Yay.
Just for me, not the show.
Yay! Thank you.
Hailee is a force in pop music right now.
Also, she's an Academy Award-nominated actress.
The sky's the limit for her.
This is Brynn and Dylan that are coming in, and she's the youngest she's 14.
Wow.
You started young.
I did.
You told me like 8, right? Yes.
Which is insane.
It's crazy.
Yeah.
I'm like 14, though, that's Dylan has a cool tone.
He sings, like, indie folk.
Okay.
I-It should be fun, and it's your first time to do this, this is my first time to do this.
Amazing.
So I'm very excited.
BRYNN: Being 14 and from such a small town, there's a lot of pressure put on me.
But my family has been rooting for me since day one.
[Voice breaking.]
I am so proud of Brynn.
Um I wanna see inside - Brynn! - Would you let me See beneath your beautiful Right away, I got it at the end.
Yeah! Oh, man, she likes her.
Did Blake turn? Blake turned, too! Crap.
You're my absolute first person I've ever turned for.
Oh, my gosh.
- I can win with you - Oh, my God.
DYLAN: Brynn's so young, and she's so captivating.
Just 'cause she's 14 means absolutely nothing, because that tone in her voice, she sounds like she's like 30.
Oh, it's gonna be tough.
I started with acting at 3 years old.
And when I was 16, I was in a boy band.
But singing on "The Voice," I was so nervous.
This means more to me than anything I've ever done, because I've pretended to be other people my whole life and this is me being me.
And even though we ain't got money - Oh, my God.
- I'm so in love with you, honey I'm going up against Dylan, and he's so good! That was beautiful, but I cannot wait to see what you have in your arsenal.
BRYNN: Dylan has a lot more experience than me.
His style and his tone is so unique.
And that makes me really nervous, but really excited at the same time.
I'm really interested to see what she's gonna do with us.
No! Oh, my gosh! Hi.
I have Hailee Steinfeld for you here.
- How are you? - This is so crazy! - Hey.
- Aww, that's so sweet.
I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm just as excited that she's here as you all are.
Aww, thank you.
BRYNN: When I walked in and I saw Hailee Steinfeld sitting there, I was like, "Oh, my gosh.
" I knew her from "Pitch Perfect" and all of her other movies and her songs.
She has had so much success.
Like, this is really cool.
My favorite thing in life is to take a pop song and make it something different.
So I wanted to put this swampy kind of more edgy, dark-y vibe on "Ready For It?" by Taylor Swift, so it would kind of benefit both of you.
KELLY: I paired Brynn and Dylan 'cause they both have this flavor of indie rock singer/songwriter thing.
Wonder how many girls - He loved and left haunted - Yes.
But if he's a ghost, then I can be a phantom Brynn is the real deal.
Whoo! You could just feel her presence and her energy.
It's infectious.
If I had a record label, she would be the first artist that I would sign.
And you'll never be alone Island breeze Yeah! Okay.
No one has to know - Yeah - Yes! KELLY: Dylan, he's got this swagger.
He's like, "I'm here, you're welcome, like, for my performance.
" Like, I love it.
And this song really showed me his range a bit more.
Are you ready for it? The level of cool over here, the level of sass whoo! That first verse, I'm like, she's about to - destroy you with her eyes.
- DYLAN: Yeah.
And the fact that you're 14, like is - Crazy! - mind-blown.
Yeah.
Dylan, on that In the middle of the night - Yeah.
- just hold it.
Yeah.
And don't even head into a run there.
That's so sexy when a guy does that.
It's a completely different song when you hear it from this - Male perspective.
- male perspective.
It really is, and it's amazing.
Yeah.
I mean, even a couple of the melodies that you changed, the more you can do to make it feel like you, the better.
Brynn, whenever you go for big notes, never look up 'cause that's gonna put natural strain.
Even if it's hard, just hold it and find vibrato.
- Ah - That's way easier than - Ah - That sounds like you're yelling.
A lot of times, 'cause I have the tendency to look up a lot too.
Even if you're up here, just dropping down.
Yeah.
And that makes it easier, you know, and you plant your feet and feel your feet on the ground.
Hey, that's why I performed barefoot for a decade.
Really? I like to feel my feet on the ground, yeah.
I'm learning so much from this, by the way.
This is, like Oh, shoot.
I'm loving this.
Are you ready for it? Yes! - Whoa - Okay, whoo! Are you ready for it? KELLY: I'm looking forward to seeing how Brynn and Dylan do onstage just because they both have a lot of, like, movement.
Baby, let the games begin And I wanna see if they can take the advice that Hailee and I gave to them and go from there.
In the middle of the night In my dreams KELLY: I love working with my team on the stage, 'cause it's a reminder of how amazing they are.
And it's my first time doing this, and I have the best team.
[Laughs.]
You came in more solid than you did in rehearsals.
Been working on it.
Yasss! It sounds so good.
Stage rehearsal was awesome.
It means a lot, having all of these people around me to kind of help me do as good as I possibly can.
She is just like, "What?!" It's like, "What?!" She is coming at you.
Brynn and Dylan did their homework, y'all.
They are nailing it.
Baby, let the games begin KELLY: I don't know who I'm gonna pick.
It's just really gonna come down to who can control those nerves when it counts.
Are you ready for it? [Cheering.]
What?! DALY: Download "The Voice" official app before the next battle so you can play along with our coaches.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
[Cheers and applause.]
Let the battle begin.
Yes! Okay.
Ooh Knew he was a killer First time that I saw him Wonder how many girls He loved and left haunted But if he's a ghost, then I can be a phantom Holdin' him for ransom Some Some boys are tryin' too hard I don't try at all, though Younger than her exes But I act like such a man, so She see nothing better And she love me forever - Like a vendetta-ta - Yeah! I-I-I see How this is gon' go - Touch me - And you'll never be alone I-Island breeze And lights down low - No one has to know - Yeah! In the middle of the night - In my dreams - Wow.
You should see the things we do Baby, yeah Baby In the middle of the night In my dreams - I know I'm gonna be with you - Yo! So I take my time Hey, KC, are you ready for it? [Cheers and applause.]
Whoa Are you ready for it? Baby, let the games begin Let the games begin, let the games begin - Are you ready for it? - Whoa, baby, let the games begin Let the games begin Let the games begin I-I-I see how this is gon' go Touch me and you'll never be alone I-Island breeze, lights down low No one has to know Yeah In the middle of the night In my dreams Whoa You should see the things we do Baby, yeah Baby In the middle of the night In my dreams I know I'm gonna be with you So I take my time In the middle of the night Baby, let the games begin Let the games begin Let the games begin Are you ready for it? Baby, let the games begin Let the games begin Let the games begin Are you ready for it? Yeah! Are you ready for it? Are you ready for it? Yeah! [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Wow.
Whoo! Wow.
Brynn and Dylan, that was crazy.
I loved that energy.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
First of all, Brynn, like, that voice inside of you is something crazy.
Thank you.
And, Dylan, you got, like, all this swag and energy.
Thank you.
I mean, like, you over there on the floor and everything.
I love people who get on the floor.
[Laughter.]
No, 'cause it means you really want it and you're really unafraid to just go for yours, and I loved that.
Well done, Kelly, man.
[Cheers and applause.]
This has to be a typo, because it says that you're 14.
No, that's true.
That's actual true fact? That's a true fact.
They're not lying.
You're a star.
[Cheers and applause.]
Thank you.
And, Dylan, your energy is so infectious.
You high-fived the ground.
[Laughter.]
I love it.
But I gotta go with Brynn Thank you so much, Adam.
- 'cause it's just crazy, yeah.
- Thank you.
[Cheers and applause.]
Dylan, you're from New Jersey.
Yeah.
He's like one of the dudes from "Grease," isn't he? [Laughter.]
He's like He's You know what I mean? He's bad.
He's bad.
That's so, like, country to say that.
[Southern accent.]
You like like one of them city boys, here.
[Laughter.]
Dylan's only 21, also.
I mean, that's young as hell.
I think you're a really good singer.
Thanks, man.
I don't know what the stage ever did to you that you gotta beat it up.
[Laughter.]
Brynn, if I heard you on the radio, I'd be like, "Oh, my God.
That's Brynn," because you don't sound like anybody else, and that's cool.
And you've got a lot of power in your voice.
You've got a lot of energy.
The thing with Brynn is that she's 14 and and yes, you're you're a star.
But, man, I it got pretty loud in here for Dylan, too.
[Cheers and applause.]
DALY: Thank you, Coaches! Kelly, you have the final decision.
I think what people forget about you, and it's because you do have this magical presence about you onstage and you're just so confident, it's fun to watch you, that they forget to listen sometimes.
Hmm.
Because you do have a really solid voice.
And, Brynn, there's some kind of just old-soul, really cool vibe about you.
It was really fun, and I think just infectious.
And it's what music is about, is captivating an audience.
Kelly, tough decision.
Who is the winner of this battle? [Dramatic music plays.]
Oh, and now you're holding hands.
I'm totally gonna cry.
Okay.
I hate this part.
[Laughs.]
I'm gonna go with my gut.
I'm going with Brynn.
[Cheers and applause.]
Brynn, congratulations! You're moving on to the knockouts! KELLY: I love Brynn, y'all.
I think that there's something super special about her.
She's so emotional, and she's captivating.
She's just fire.
I'm so excited for you.
[Sobbing.]
That was so incredible.
I can't believe that this is my life! Oh, my God! Coaches, let me remind you Dylan's available to steal.
Dylan, anything you'd like to say to your coach? [Audience shouting.]
Steal! I mean, honestly, it's been a pleasure being able to work with you and talk to you and hang out with you.
Thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Dylan Hartigan! [Cheers and applause.]
Oh.
[Whoosh.]
What?! Stop! There's the sound of a steal! Yes, yes, yes! DALY: Blake Shelton! Oh, love that! It's hard to deny Dylan's energy and his stage presence, and the fact that he just catches your eye when he's up there.
But more than that, he's a he's a great vocalist.
TOGETHER: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
To help prepare his team for battle, Blake called on his friend, country-music legend Trace Adkins.
We all got a hillbilly bone down deep inside BLAKE: I brought Trace in because he's had monstrous country hits, and he's been able to have a career in just about anything he wanted to do.
He's been a great influential country artist.
Yee-haw! When you see them pretty little country queens Man, you gotta admit TRACE: "The Voice" is unique in that everybody would like to be in a position where they can make somebody else's dream come true.
That's a beautiful place to be.
I'd like to have an opportunity to do that from time to time, you know? DALY: Now, let's see which pairing Blake and Trace are waiting on.
JESSLEE: Before "The Voice," I used to compete in body building.
Music and muscles that's like my little mantra, because those are the two things that really define me.
Now I'm taking a little break from competing 'cause I wanna focus on the music.
It's a damn cold night It's Jesslee! I'm with you Yes, girl.
Sing, Jess.
Jesslee's voice is a mixture.
She has a country twang, but it's like a rock powerhouse.
She sings with everything.
I can really hold on to that as someone who gets to sing with her.
Before "The Voice," I sang background for a couple of really awesome people.
Wynonna Judd was my very first tour.
I still sing background for Jennifer Hudson.
The blind auditions were nerve-racking for someone who's gotten very comfortable in the background.
Your love is like a see saw [Laughs.]
- Your love is like a see saw, baby - Oh, my God, I got Kyla.
Your love is like a see saw This is gonna be cool, 'cause she's an amazing artist.
Killing it.
She can frickin' belt like no one ever heard.
This girl can sing.
- Hi! - Hey, girls.
- How are you? - Hey, everybody.
You gotta meet my friend, Trace Adkins.
Nice to meet you.
I'm Kyla.
Nice to meet you.
Hello, Kyla.
I was already excited because it was the first day to work with Blake, and seeing Trace Adkins next to him was the icing on the cake.
How've you guys been? Excited.
It's gonna be fun.
Man, I like that attitude already.
TRACE: I am looking forward to it.
I know.
Even though you didn't say it very loud.
I couldn't understand what you were saying.
I said I'm looking forward to it.
Oh, okay.
[Kyla laughs.]
I just wanna see what time your good mood starts and wait till then to start talking to you.
God.
[Laughs.]
So one last time - Yeah.
- I need to be The one who takes you home One more time BLAKE: "One Last Time" by Ariana Grande is not in either one of their genres.
Jesslee has this very powerful rock edge, and Kyla has this incredible, huge voice.
I wanna push them to the edge and see what they're capable of.
The one who takes you home - Up there.
Whoo! - TRACE: Yeah.
Jesslee, your attack singing the chorus - It's everything.
- you just have such a grip an attack.
Thank you.
Kyla, just so you know, you may not even know this but she's a background singer for Jennifer Hudson.
In fact, Wynonna is My very first tour.
Gotta be good to sing with her.
Listen, she's amazing.
But so having said that, you're not doing that anymore.
Mm-hmm.
You sang a part with her on the first verse.
Mm-hmm.
You're kind of singing in the background voice version of Kyla.
[Chuckles.]
You're kind of reserved.
Yeah.
On a song like this, if you can hit it full-voice, hit it full-voice.
I would sing this song great.
[Laughs.]
I want to hear Like, I really wanna hear you sing this song great.
KYLA: That's fantastic.
[Laughs.]
Please do.
For a soul singer to go with a country coach, it's crazy, it's nuts.
But Blake is pushing me.
I'm so accustomed to giving all of the attention to the people I'm with, and I had taken the back seat again.
My approach needs to be more aggressive.
Whoa One last time I need to be Kyla, she hears things in her head that she can sing that most people can't do.
But Jesslee, I like female vocals that are just powerful, and just just sit you back in your seat.
Jesslee, off the top of my head Yes.
One more time I need Are you trying to switch into a falsetto? I just didn't punch it I don't think, yeah.
We gotta go one way or the other.
Yep.
And And then once you decide what that's gonna be, it's gotta be confident.
Yeah, absolutely.
Can we do it one more time? Let's do it.
Let's hold hands this time, just so we can really get into the moment.
[Laughs.]
Okay.
[Laughs.]
You know, this song's a hard song to sing because it's rangy.
I don't care if you I'm already hearing these girls adding even more to it.
So basically, whoever can blow the roof off the place, that's who's gonna be the winner of this battle.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles at Universal Studios Hollywood.
- [Sneezes.]
Excuse me.
- Bless you.
[Audience shouts "bless you".]
Bless you.
Damn straight! [Laughter.]
This is, like, a polite audience.
You just got blessed by everyone.
That's right.
You don't deserve that.
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice.
" This is "The Voice.
" [Laughter.]
[Cheers and applause.]
Let the battle begin.
I was a liar I gave into the fire I know I should've fought it At least I'm being honest Feel like a failure 'Cause I know that I failed you I should've done you better 'Cause you don't want a liar And I know, and I know, and I know She gives you everything Boy, I couldn't give it to you Oh, yeah And I know, and I know, and I know That you got everything But I got nothing here without you, baby So one last time I need to be The one who takes you home One more time I promise after that I'll let you go Baby, I don't care if you got her in your heart All I really care is you wake up in my arms One last time I need to be The one who takes you home I don't deserve it I know I don't deserve it But stay with me a minute At least I'll make it worth it Can't you forgive me? At least just temporarily I know that this is my fault I should've been more careful And I know I know she's been good to you But, boy, I couldn't give it to you Hey I know, I know, I know You got everything I've got nothing here without you, yeah Oh, one more time I need to be The one who takes you home Oh, one more night I promise after that I'll let you go No, I don't care if you got her in your heart, yeah All I really care is you wake up in my arms One last time I need to be The one who takes you home One last time I need to be The one who takes you home [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Whoo! I loved that.
It was so good.
[Cheers and applause.]
JESSLEE: Thank you.
Kyla, the thing I love most about your voice it looks effortless.
I never in my life wanna sing with you, Kyla.
[Laughter.]
You're so good.
You're like I would feel so bad about myself.
I was actually thinking the same thing.
In fact, when you were singing, you made me all bashful 'cause you were, like, looking at me and singing a verse and I was like, "Is she looking at me?" I was like [Laughter.]
This is the funny thing.
Jesslee, this is no discredit.
You are amazing.
Yes, she is.
Thank you.
You are a phenomenal singer.
I'm just saying, it's like [Cheers and applause.]
You both did a really good job.
I would have to say, I I am a fan of Kyla.
I am.
[Cheers and applause.]
Thank you.
Go, girl.
That was a beautiful testament to you, Jesslee, actually, reminding us that you're country/rock.
I think that's a cool way to show that you have major versatility in that you don't back down.
Incredible job.
Well done.
Thank you so much.
Mm-hmm.
[Cheers and applause.]
Kyla, I think that it was just a joy to watch you onstage.
The thing that you probably have to work the most on is not closing down your greatness.
Wow.
I have a feeling you often in your life have needed to subdue your greatness.
Now, listen.
I only have one pair of lashes.
Okay, and don't [Laughter.]
don't don't have these come off, now.
Don't take me too long.
I just want to encourage you to never do that, please.
You did a beautiful job here, I think, blending in sisterhood.
And I believe you both shined incredibly, so well done.
- Thank you.
- DALY: Thank you, Coaches! [Cheers and applause.]
Blake, you got the final decision here.
Give us some thoughts on that battle.
The things that I was hearing about Kyla is because she's been a background singer, but it's taking that step to the front of the stage.
As you can see right now, even in this moment, that's weird to her.
She stares at the floor.
[Laughs.]
[Cheers and applause.]
A-And, Jesslee, the grip that you had on this song is the thing that Kyla needed to figure out for herself.
And And that's what you naturally had, you know, just your attack.
Anyway, you guys are incredible.
And thank you both.
[Cheers and applause.]
The time has come.
Who is the winner of this battle? [Dramatic music plays.]
I love both of y'all.
The winner of this battle is Kyla.
[Cheers and applause.]
Kyla, congratulations! You're moving on to the knockouts! I love her, man.
She's so damn cute.
She's amazing.
So happy for you, sweetie.
Thank you.
You deserve it.
KYLA: I'm overwhelmed.
I'm holding onto my lashes by a thread.
It's very important not to ruin them right now.
But I feel great.
Give it up for Jesslee, ladies and gentlemen! Good job.
Thanks.
BLAKE: This was a tough decision for me, because I know that Jesslee really stepped up.
But Kyla's voice specifically, I don't think we've discovered yet what the limits are to her range.
And that's very exciting.
That is a monster a straight-up monster voice.
She's special, like, she, like, captures your attention.
She's so good.
DALY: Coming up, Team Adam prepares for battle.
We don't do songs like this very often.
The song of all songs.
I know you guys can handle it.
You are my heat, you are my fire The spirit of Chaka entered you.
Allow me to kiss y'all's butts a little bit.
I can't deny it - Whoa - Whoa - Whoo! - I'm just gonna say, - I feel, like - Stupid? [Laughter.]
DALY: And later We got to get away our coaches are left with impossible decisions - Okay, I'm sweating.
Um - The winner - The winner of this battle - battle is DALY: leading to even more steals.
Oh, my gosh.
Somebody should've picked me the first time, but that's okay.
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
For his adviser, Adam brought in Grammy Award-nominated singer and writer of some of music's biggest hits, Julia Michaels.
I'm super excited to have you.
Thanks, I'm really excited to be here.
You're the greatest.
We're going on tour with her next year.
She's a mega-talent.
She's a fearless writer, very knowledgeable, intuitively brilliant with music.
Thanks for having me.
We are buddies.
JULIA: I wanted to be an adviser because I've always been a songwriter.
I just made this artist transition, and I know what it feels like to f to feel like you had one swimming lesson and then dropped into the ocean.
DALY: Let's see which artists Adam chose to pair.
RAYSHUN: After everything that I've been through health-wise, making it past the blind auditions was so meaningful to me.
There was a time in my life where I was down and out.
[Voice breaking.]
I was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer.
I lost my voice.
I lost my hearing in one ear.
Some people don't get the opportunity after going through something like that to come and do what you love.
I remember bits and pieces of my blind audition.
In the night It felt like I was dreaming, honestly.
[Voice breaking.]
When I was in ICU, I used to play that song.
It used to give me so much hope and energy, and, like, I just You chose the song that helped you through what you went through? That's what makes you special.
Ooh! You say don't stop believing? I'm gonna start believing right now that I'm just your coach.
- Adam! - Adam has so much experience.
I'm just like a sponge ready to soak up everything that he has to teach me.
I'm just nervous right now.
I cannot wait to find out who Adam is pairing me with.
Everybody on Team Adam is so good.
Chain, chain, chain [Laughs.]
Chain, chain, chain Tish! Oh, my God.
I knew it, I knew it! I heard that first chord, and I immediately knew it was Tish.
And I was like, "Yes," but, "Dang.
" One of the best vocalists on our team! She's gonna put me on my toes and make me work for it.
She's so good.
Ah! [Laughs.]
Whoo! I got some work to do.
Whoo, hoo, hoo! TISH: Years ago, I wouldn't have been able to handle this.
When I had my daughter at 15, I was just trying to get through high school.
It just wasn't time for me.
Music has always been my therapy, and "The Voice" has given me that opportunity.
And I couldn't be [sniffles.]
any more grateful.
Kelly and Adam turned for me.
Words can't explain how I felt.
It was just amazing.
Whoo! I love this woman! Whoo! You just killed Aretha Franklin! It would almost be disrespectful to not push my button on a show called "The Voice" for that voice.
I pick Adam.
I feel that Adam really has faith in me.
This is literally I'm living my dream, something that I never thought would ever be able to happen to me.
Just a small town girl - Oh, my God! - Livin' in a lonely world Rayshun is one of the guys that I I was really scared to be paired against.
Oh, my God.
Look at that! He does remind me a lot of myself, because we go for it.
Come on, I knew it! Aah! [Laughter.]
Yes, yes, yes.
Oh, yes.
Let's go do it.
'Cause that's what's about to get down, honey.
Thank you.
Ooh! Oh, dope! And we back.
Hi, Ms.
Julia! Hello! Our adviser was Julia Michaels.
You are so beautiful.
You look so cute.
She's an amazing songwriter and performer, so hopefully one day, she'll be writing a song for me.
[Laughs.]
TISH: Well, my first question what made you do this? I know! Like, since day one of meeting Rayshun, I'm like, he's the one.
Please.
You guys are so, so, so good.
It's a really, really good thing for you guys.
- It It really is.
- It's not a good thing for me.
And, like, also, the song Come on.
The song of all songs, yeah.
I know you guys can handle it.
We don't do songs like this very often.
Yeah.
We're the first.
Right.
Right, right, right.
I will love you anyway ADAM: "Sweet Thing," Rufus featuring Chaka Khan such a soul/funk record.
I wish you were my lover Tish's voice is power and perfection two very, very difficult things to have.
I can't deny it JULIA: Rayshun sometimes you hear voices and you can tell they've been through so much.
When he sings, I can feel that.
Whoo! What?! I don't know where the spirit of Chaka entered you, but, like, allow me to kiss y'all's butts a little.
Seriously.
Baby, you gonna be kissing for a minute.
Is it warm in here? I just Ooh, this just changed.
Whoo! You made my day better.
It's artists like you that make me feel confident.
Yeah, that means so much.
You guys truly love what you do, and that's beautiful.
I love that.
I missed my favorite part of the song.
The Whoa - Oh, oh - Yes, yes.
Those harmonies are crazy.
Yeah, when I messed up, it took me off.
So we got you.
You know, Rayshun, you're not gonna try and, like, outdo Tish.
Right.
You're gonna have to be still you here.
Mm-hmm.
Your identity is even more important right now.
But don't let that intimidate you.
Okay.
You don't need to chase this.
Your tones are so different.
Let them be that way.
But so beautiful.
It's amazing.
'Cause this is gonna be one of the best battles.
For sure.
You are my heat, you are my fire RAYSHUN: I'm nervous to battle Tish because every time I've heard Tish sing, it's just been flawless.
You're not mine, and I can't deny it TISH: Rayshun it was like the more his voice warmed up, it became more his song.
I do have my work cut out for me.
I need to make sure that I am on top of my game 100%.
That was so good that it got, like, an outro.
[Laughter.]
That is unprecedented.
Wow.
Let's take them out, yeah.
It was good to see you guys! We'll see you very soon! Good night, everybody! Can't deny it JULIA: It's so hard when you're singing other people's songs to find your identity in it.
But that is the kind of thing that makes an artist an artist, and Rayshun and Tish are both incredible.
- Y'all good? - Three, two.
- You are my heat - You are my fire I said you're not mine I can't deny it Crashing rehearsals today.
It's a new thing.
Feel like it'll give us another good advantage, seeing them in the room doing the song.
I'll go crazy Hey! TISH: Hey! I never come to rehearsals, usually.
This is great because we have the space that we're gonna be in.
Yeah.
Seeing it onstage is great because you can actually make decisions that are a little more informed.
I just want to satisfy ya RAYSHUN: There's just something about being on the actual stage and getting that sound, because Adam could actually point out anything that we could fix so we could be perfect at the end of the day.
It's amazing.
You know what my note is for you guys, is "keep the magic.
" The risky run when you do something that's so great and everyone tells you, "Oh, it's amazing," is you get it in your head don't let it suffer because we're all praising you right now.
Yeah.
Keep the energy and the original intent of it exactly where it was before.
TISH: This battle will be neck-and-neck.
Rayshun and I are gonna definitely deliver for RT14 Rayshun, Tish "Voice" 14.
That's kinda our thing.
[Laughs.]
It's the worst and best decision I've ever made, man.
You should be not together, but Pharrell taught me this talent finds a way.
Rayshun and Tish are not of this Earth.
They're gonna blow everybody's minds, I think.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
The battle starts now.
Ooh Ooh, yeah Listen, baby.
I will love you anyway Even if you cannot stay I think you are the one for me, yeah Here is where you want to be I just want to satisfy ya 'Cause you're not mine and I can't deny it Don't you hear me talkin', baby Love me now or I'll go crazy - Whoa, whoa, sweet thing - Yeah! Hey! Don't ya know you're my everything Yes, you are Yes, you are I wish you were my lover But ya Act so undercover Don't want your mind, don't want your money These words I say, they may sound funny, but Whoa, whoa, sweet thing Don't ya know you're my everything Whoa, sweet thing Yes! Don't ya know you're my everything - Yes, you are - Yes, you are Whoa, oh, oh Whoa, oh, oh Whoa, whoa Ooh, ooh, ooh You are my heat, you are my fire You make me weak with strong desire Yeah! Love ya, child, my whole life long And being right or being wrong I just want to satisfy ya 'Cause you're not mine, and I can't deny it Don't ya hear me talkin', baby Love me now or I will go - Crazy, baby - Yeah Baby, now - Whoa - Whoa - Oh - I said you are my heat You are my fire - I said you're not mine - Damn! I can't deny it Don't you hear me I'm talkin', baby Love me now or I'll go crazy Oh, oh Oh, yeah [Cheers and applause.]
My God.
Whoo! Well, I'm just gonna say one thing real quick.
Like, I feel like Stupid? [Laughter.]
No, no.
I feel smart.
That moment that just happened could not have happened for the both of you without you being together.
So that's that's how I feel good.
[Cheers and applause.]
Y'all are insane.
Yes, you do live in the stratosphere, but your range? Yes, yes.
Rayshun, I'm like, what? It's so good.
Yes, yes.
[Cheers and applause.]
I'm trying to keep up.
I'm trying to keep up.
I'm just trying to keep up.
[Laughs.]
I mean, if I had to pick, I might pick Tish.
I do tend to sometimes lean more towards, you know, bigger female singers.
And you just remind me so much of, like, Chaka and Aretha.
Oh, thank you.
But I'm gonna tell you right now, I would love both of y'all on my team.
[Cheers and applause.]
So good.
I-I gotta say it was pretty equal.
There's no winner or loser.
Tish is a phenomenon, and I kind of felt like you had more stepping up to do in order to to get up to where she exists.
But I feel like you did it.
And, Tish, that is where you exist all the time, I feel like.
[Cheers and applause.]
This sucks.
It sucks.
[Laughter.]
Rayshun, your voice is really special.
That dance between low and high and strong and soft is really, really fresh.
And, Tish, there was a moment in those earlier parts when we got to hear you come out really powerful, but also very tender.
You both did an amazing job.
Thank you so much.
Beautiful.
[Cheers and applause.]
DALY: Thank you, Coaches, so much.
Adam, final decision is yours.
Give us some thoughts first.
I believe this song, you could argue, is more teed up, Tish, for you.
It's Chaka, it's in your lane.
Right.
Rayshun, you know, being able to keep up with Tish singing Chaka is next to impossible, so that shows me so much about who you are.
Adam, who's the winner of this battle? [Dramatic music plays.]
I love you both equally.
You both should be in this competition.
And for for both of you not to be at this stage would be a crime.
The winner of this battle is Rayshun.
[Gasps.]
Oh, my God! Rayshun, shocked by his own coach's decision, moves on the knockouts! ADAM: Tish left it all up there, but I had to stay with Rayshun.
There's just something about him that's so special.
Like, he's just magic to me.
Thank you, man! Thank you so much.
Rayshun's got range.
He's got emotion.
He's got everything.
- Yes! - Whoo! RAYSHUN: I feel so good.
I'm so ready for the knockouts.
I'm ready to get up there and show him what else I have in store.
Let me remind you, Tish is available to steal, Coaches.
Tish, what would you like to say to Adam? [Voice breaking.]
You believed in me and turned your chair you and Kelly.
But thank you so much just for all of the advice.
[Whoosh.]
That's the sound of a steal! Kelly Clarkson steals Tish from Adam Levine! Whoo! Talk to me about Tish.
I know you remember that I'm the other one that turned around in the blind auditions.
Yes, ma'am.
I mean, somebody should've picked me the first time, but that's okay.
[Laughter.]
Because I'm just kidding.
I'm just kidding.
I'm just messing with him.
It would be a very poor moment for this show to let someone as talented as you go home.
It's insane.
Give it up for Tish Haynes Keys! I love Tish.
I'm so excited.
God meant for this to happen.
You can't let a woman that comes out here and sings like Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan go home.
So I was like, hell, no! [Laughing.]
You're coming to my team.
- Yes, Tish! - I'm truly honored.
Me and Kelly got some work to do.
Yes, we do! I know that she truly believes in me! I'm so excited! [Laughter.]
Oh, my God.
I literally I love your voice.
Oh, thank you.
I love it.
Wouldn't it be amazing if we just, like, beat Adam together? Yes, we shall.
We shall.
I would love that moment, too.
Yes, we shall, and Blake.
[Laughs.]
I'm tired of Blake winning.
We gotta take this home.
[Laughter.]
DALY: Coming up, Team Alicia captivates our coaches.
There's something that really draws me in to what you do.
You literally cast a spell on me.
I have so many things to say.
I'm not gonna say them all.
I'm sure you do.
I promise.
I'm very excited.
DALY: And later, a shocking steal.
Yes! That's right! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles, where Alicia's next artists are about to find out who they'll be battling.
SHANA: I'm about to work with Alicia Keys, and it's literally the most exciting thing I've done in my career so far.
I cannot wait.
CHRISTIANA: Being here, I feel like I'm walking into the person, into the artist that I know that I've always wanted to be but was never bold enough to do.
Growing up, I only listened to gospel music.
And my mom was a Christian rapper.
We come into this house to give God the glory We raise our hands as we tell our story Go, Mom! CHRISTIANA: The fact that now I'm singing onstage in front of the entire world is really just a testament of God's faithfulness.
And I'm so happy that I have this opportunity.
You used to call me on my cellphone SHANA: Oh, Christiana.
Oh, she is so good.
Call me on my cellphone Damn! You just brought, like, Ella Fitzgerald in with you through Drake.
This is gonna be great, but I'm definitely a little bit scared.
Christiana her voice is so rich and thick and gorgeous.
I have to rise to the occasion and bring a certain power that I'm often afraid to show.
- Rang-ang-ang-ang - Shana! Aww, this is crazy! Oh, bang SHANA: About a decade ago, I had a band.
We had a big reputation in the film and TV world.
And then I had my son, and I had a new purpose in my life.
But he gave me a power within myself to pursue my dreams again.
I felt, like, this little mix of Florence, a little bit of Sia.
Wow.
I felt you from the minute you opened your mouth.
[Cheers and applause.]
Yeah! Hi! Christiana and Shana.
CHRISTIANA: When I walked in and I saw Shawn Mendes, I was like, "Oh, my gosh!" I'm Christiana.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you, too.
How's everything? "Treat You Better" is one of my favorite songs.
Hi! How are you? CHRISTIANA: So I think a vocal lesson with Alicia Keys and Shawn Mendes, like, it just blew my mind.
I am so excited to put y'all together, because you both have such a distinctly unique style.
I really wanted to come up with something that was in both of your stratospheres, but you could maintain your own individuality within this song.
You know that I could use somebody Yes.
ALICIA: Christiana's voice is just completely unique a little bit of Ella Fitzgerald, and yet she's just, like, totally today.
Someone like you And all you know Shana has this kind of beautiful indie vibe.
So I gave them "Use Somebody," Kings of Leon, 'cause I felt like it would have the space to allow them both to be completely who they are.
It's a total different arrangement from the original, and I think that's what makes it really exciting.
Mm-hmm.
That's so good.
Word! That's awesome.
It's beautiful.
Those harmonies are incredible.
Wow.
You guys have a real thing together.
[Laughs.]
It's like a super connection.
You can feel it.
We're missing a few musical things.
I just wanna make sure we're on the same page, so one, in the beginning of their very airy verses, if you could please swell ssshhh! Please.
And then Someone like you So on that chorus Someone like you it's like that's when you'll start the the, like, broken-down kick.
Yeah, like a heartbeat.
Someone like you And all you know, and how you speak Yeah.
SHANA: Alicia put in a lot of time with the band.
She got the arrangement sounding so magical, and it felt so good.
I love all the movement and stuff, but don't be afraid to stick to melody, too, sometimes.
You know, if you've done a lot of moving, come back to the melody and bring yourself home.
And let's just make sure we reaching those "Ohs.
" Oh, oh Be a little more flow-y instead of so jabby.
Oh, oh Oh, oh I've been roaming around - I was looking down - SHAWN: Christiana had an incredible tone.
I was completely drawn in by her, and I couldn't look away from her.
You know that I could use somebody Shana has one of the most unique voices I think I've ever heard in my entire life.
They are hitting a spot that's emotion and it's this sadness and it's this thing that's deep inside that they have completely tapped into.
What we're gonna do is you're gonna explore a little bit more jazzy influence Yeah just to see, like, is there stuff in there that you like.
And then, Shana, keep at that little game where you sometimes take yourself totally to another place.
But where your foundation is is great.
Thank you so much.
I'm gonna see you guys again at the rehearsal onstage and stuff.
Yeah.
They both did such an incredible job, but they need to continue to explore and taking chances and trying things.
CHRISTIANA: I'm about to do the stage rehearsal, and I'm feeling a little nervous.
- Off in the night - But I'm very, very excited to show Alicia all my hard work and what we've done with the song.
You're saying, "I could use somebody.
" And that's a joyful feeling, so let that permeate your zone, too.
All right.
Awesome! Someone like you Oh, oh ALICIA: It's really wonderful to see them a week later when they've had some time to live with it.
Someone like you Christiana definitely added more of herself, and I think Shana continued to bend and change the melody.
I've been roaming around They are honest with their artistry.
It's gonna be a really hard choice.
I see [Laughing.]
Yes! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to night one of the battles.
This battle begins right now.
Oh, oh Oh, oh I've been roaming around I was looking down at all I see Painted faces fill the places I can't reach You know that I could use somebody You know that I could use somebody Someone like you And all you know, and how you speak Countless lovers under cover Of the street You know that I could use somebody You know that I could use somebody Someone like you Oh, oh Oh, oh Someone like you Oh, oh Oh, oh Off in the night while you live it up I'm off to sleep Waging wars to shake the poet And the beat I hope I'm gonna Make you notice I hope I'm gonna Make you notice Someone like me Oh, oh Someone like me Oh, oh, oh I've been roaming around I was looking down at all I see [Cheers and applause.]
Yeah! Hello, ladies.
I've never heard that song done that way.
Christiana, there's something that really draws me into what you do.
It's very special, the way you deliver a vocal, and and I appreciate that.
And you do it so effortlessly.
And, Shana, you're also a very unique singer.
A-And the moments that were powerful were very, very powerful.
There's really kernels of greatness in both of you and what you were doing.
I didn't feel it fully congeal and come together, but I would be going with Christiana.
[Cheers and applause.]
I have so many things to say.
I'm not gonna say them all.
I'm sure you do.
I promise.
I'm very excited.
[Laughter.]
It's super interesting how you put them both on the same team, because there's, like, this mythological thing about you and you have this calm, Nefertiti, like, "Damn I'm good.
" What does that word mean? - Nefertiti? - Yeah.
An Egyptian goddess.
Like, y'all don't know? Am I alone? I don't know what that is.
Nefertiti! What? Oh, my God, and Egyptian What are you? Man, why is is a Hey, hey, Blake, Blake.
I don't even know what the word is.
I'm asking you.
She's, like, a beautiful queen from, like, Egypt.
You said 5,000 words, and that's the one that I don't know.
It's historical! Read a book! [Laughter.]
God, I love you so much more every day.
You don't even get these performances at, like, award shows.
Mm.
Like, I'm done.
And scene.
Hey, and scene.
As far as that performance goes, you guys are very equal but very different in your approach at the same time.
And I agree there's something that's very e-endearing about you and your presence onstage.
But I think Shana literally cast a spell on me, like, because I think it's equal in the singing.
I'm gonna throw it to Shana because I thought she did some pret pretty cool vocals.
DALY: Thank you, Coaches.
Alicia? I love this version of that song, and I loved the fact that you could deconstruct it and take it to another place and still make it as powerful and meaningful in a way that's almost unrecognizable.
The battles is one of my favorite parts of this show because you actually can do these kind of extra creative, cool things.
So congratulations on a beautiful performance.
I loved it.
You killed it.
[Cheers and applause.]
Alicia, who's the winner of this battle? [Dramatic music plays.]
The winner of this battle [Sighs.]
is Christiana.
Christiana, congratulations! You are moving on to the knockouts, representing Team Alicia! [Cheers and applause.]
Oh! So wonderful.
I'm just so thankful and grateful for her believing in me and just wanting me to continue.
I love you, too, Blake.
I can't believe I'm going to knockouts, but I am.
Shana, anything you'd like to say to your coach? I'm just really honored to have had this moment - in my life, so thank you.
- Yes, you are! Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Shana Halligan! ALICIA: They both were magnificent, but Christiana has this youthful way of interpreting music that's just captivating.
She gets powerful, and it's real.
Whoa, whoa, sweet thing DALY: Stream tonight's battle songs only on Apple Music In the middle of the night or buy them on iTunes.
In my dreams This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
Y'all, I don't know which one I'm gonna pick.
This is hard.
Man, this is hard.
Yeah.
DALY: Let's meet Kelly's final pairing of the night.
JACKIE: This opportunity means the world to me.
I mean, I'm taking time out of my schooling to pursue a dream that I've thought of since I was a little girl.
Berklee was my dream school, but financially we were not able to afford it.
And then I got a call, "You've received the Berklee Lollapalooza Scholarship.
" [Voice breaking.]
And that phone call changed my life.
What about us? The blind auditions, for me, I don't think were real.
[Laughs.]
It still doesn't feel real.
Your voice had so much texture, and your tone is really accurate.
Your range is insane.
Just so much depth to your voice, and that's what I've been waiting to turn my chair around for people.
I want someone that confident.
- Kelly.
- Yes! JACKIE: I chose Kelly Clarkson because she embodies everything that I want to be as a musician.
[Sighs.]
Pain You made me a, you made me a believer Wait, I'm so excited.
D.
R.
is a powerhouse.
I was in complete shock.
And, to be honest, I was really nervous.
[ Cheers and applause .]
D.
R.
: Before "The Voice," I was working in New York, on the grind, singing in a lot of different wedding bands, corporate bands.
I've been working for this moment for about seven years now.
It's so surreal, just having people that I grew up watching on TV coaching me.
I love that you brought your soul to that song.
- Killed that.
- Where did you start singing? I grew up singing in the church.
- Yes.
- And then I was a schoolteacher.
You know what? Come on.
That is Yeah.
[Cheers and applause.]
- I pick Kelly.
- Yeah! She has the experience that I'm trying to gain right now, since she's been through the whole competition.
And I felt like she would be great for me as a coach.
Whoo! I think you're awesome.
Are you so excited? I'm so excited.
I'm so nervous.
When I saw Jackie, I was just like, "Wow, she's an amazing talent.
" She sings very high.
She has a lot of power behind it.
You always gotta be on your toes with somebody like her.
Hey! Hello.
Oh, wow.
I want to introduce Hailee.
JACKIE: Walking into rehearsal today, you're expecting to see Kelly, next thing you know, it's Hailee Steinfeld.
To see someone's who already there and has done it I don't know if perfection could come more in a package than who she is.
Just stop your crying It's a sign of the times KELLY: I paired D.
R.
and Jackie, and I gave them Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times" because they are incredibly big singers.
In the blinds, D.
R.
did Imagine Dragons.
She did P! nk.
Like, I just thought they could handle it.
I mean, I'm a fan.
- Thank you.
- Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
HAILEE: Absolutely incredible.
You somehow managed, you know, when you have your solo parts, to really make it your own.
KELLY: D.
R.
, on that one part Just stop your crying is that at the top for you? Not at all? You're closing down that for attitude, then.
Okay, I wanna make sure 'cause I was like 'cause I loved the break in your voice.
Okay.
It was, like, that cool Prince thing.
I love it.
Thank you.
I think you should start more intense.
And I love the runs you're doing.
Drag them out.
Stop your crying It's a sign of the times Like, intense.
Yeah.
'Cause this song builds.
You're gonna get there.
It is so big.
There's something so inviting about starting off really zoned in and intense, and it just, like, that's your one opportunity to get everyone in the room in that moment.
We got to get away Jackie's voice was effortless, yet so intense and got bigger.
And D.
R.
's falsetto was out of this world.
I loved this song before they came in the room, and I fell in love with it 10 times more.
What they did with it was absolutely amazing, and every single one of these is gonna be really tough for Kelly, but this one especially.
When you get so powerful Yeah.
you gotta make sure those harmonies are tight.
Yeah.
Or else it just starts being like, "What the hell?" Make sure they are dead-on.
So, we just gotta make sure that we get - the harmonies on that part.
- D.
R.
: Yeah.
So Will we ever learn? Tomorrow, we are getting back together with Kelly, and I'm honestly so excited.
We gotta get this part dope.
Yeah.
We're gonna be working on last-minute fine-tuning.
Could be a long day, but it's gonna be exciting and I'm ready.
So now it's time to go bed and get ready for tomorrow.
We got to get away KELLY: D.
R.
he's just got this crazy, incredible range.
And Jackie took me by surprise.
Like, they're so good, and they got even better.
I think the last time I just said, make sure the harmonies are together.
Yeah.
But you're nailing it.
I love that you're looking at each other.
It's important on the We never learn We've been here before Like, 'cause it's "we.
" It's so good.
It's a toss-up.
I mean, I'm literally just gonna, like, pray at that moment, see who the universe or God wants me to pick, 'cause I they're both so talented.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
Let the battle begin.
Just stop your crying It's a sign of the time Welcome to the final show I hope you're wearing your best clothes [Cheering.]
Yeah! You can't bribe the door On your way to the sky 'Cause you look pretty good down here But you ain't really good Yeah! We never learn We've been here before Why are we always stuck And running from The bullets Whoo! The bullets Just stop your crying It's a sign of the time We gotta get away from here We gotta get away from here We don't talk enough We should open up Before it's all too much Yeah Will we ever learn? We've been here before It's just what we know Stop your crying, baby It's a sign of the times We gotta get away We got to get away We got to get away Oh, we got to get away - Yeah! - Away Whoa Away [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! That's right! Man! What?! Go ahead! Say something! That was honestly my favorite battle today.
Dude, they're so good.
Honestly.
Honestly.
Thank you.
Thank you.
D.
R.
, you know, I think you are a total stunner.
Thank you.
It is just so beautiful to hear the capacity of your voice and the way that you have this control over all sides of it.
And, Jackie, you, as well, have this gorgeous roundness and a super powerful side of your voice, but also, like, a warmth that is often hard to find in a voice that occupies a higher space.
Honestly, this right here sucks for you.
- I know.
- [Laughter.]
Coming from the girl, too, like, you called me dumb earlier for pairing people together.
I couldn't fairly pair you with anyone else.
You heard that, that power.
Like, what? [Cheers and applause.]
That was just a special, special thing, and I'm really happy I got to experience it 'cause you're both that good.
You're both astonishing.
But I'm just gonna say this.
I couldn't take my eyes off you, Jackie.
I-I thought that you were Psh I mean, look.
D.
R.
, no disrespect because I think everyone here knows how good you are.
Thank you.
The real revelation today for me was Jackie.
[Cheers and applause.]
Thank you.
There's so much pressure in in these battles, and the confidence that you guys have goes a long way.
And as a coach who's worked with 10,000 people on this show 10,000 - Really? - No.
[Laughter.]
But it feels like it.
I believed him, too.
I can't tell you how far that'll take you.
But I agree with Adam.
You know, Jackie is the discovery here for me.
I'd probably be casting my vote for Jackie.
[Cheers and applause.]
Thank you, Coaches.
Kelly, you got a tough one here.
Give us some thoughts on it.
Okay, I'm sweating.
Um [Laughter.]
I love both of you.
And, D.
R.
, when you hit those crazy notes, they're effortless.
Then Little Miss over here comes in.
I'll tell you what In rehearsal, I swear to God, we all went back and we were like, "D.
R.
hit that big note, and then Jackie came in and hit that big" Like, I was like, "Oh, I'm so screwed.
" Tough one here, Kelly, for sure.
Who is the winner of this battle? [Dramatic music plays.]
The winner of this battle, because I know the other's gotta be safe If y'all let me down, okay, I'm gonna be so mad.
[Laughs.]
I'm gonna be so mad.
The winner of this battle is D.
R.
D.
R.
, congratulations! You're moving on to the knockouts on Team Kelly! [Cheers and applause.]
[Laughs.]
KELLY: I picked D.
R.
because he's a powerful singer.
I know he's bold.
He's willing to go somewhere with song selection.
A lot of times, winning and advancing is about great song selection.
[Cheers and applause.]
Coaches, let me remind you Jackie is available to steal.
[Audience shouting.]
[Whoosh.]
Adam, Alicia, Blake, all in on Jackie! [Cheers and applause.]
A triple steal! Yes, yes, yes! Yeah, Jackie! DALY: Oh, my gosh.
Adam? I don't think you really realized what you just did, but you can win this thing.
And this is a very definitive moment for this season, because if and when you do win this thing, they're gonna go back to this moment.
And I know how to win this show.
You were up there alone as far as I was concerned today.
And that's what you need, is someone who continues to feel that way about you moving forward.
So do not forget that, please.
Okay.
All right, let's hear from Alicia Keys.
You didn't compete with D.
R.
You stood on your own.
And so as the only woman up here and the one that turned in the blinds, and obviously that day you went with Kelly, so now is the chance to kind of make it right.
[Laughter.]
There are so many different ways to make it right.
[Laughter.]
DALY: Coach Blake Shelton.
You all went in, why, for Jackie? I love her.
[Laughter.]
About this point in the show last year, there was a little girl named Chloe.
She was a young, early 20s, rocking female singer.
Yeah.
She took a chance, and we ended up winning the show.
[Cheers and applause.]
I want to get you to the finale.
I know you can do it.
I know you can do it.
[Cheers and applause.]
Jackie, it is up to you.
Who do you pick as your new coach? [Dramatic music plays.]
This is, like, the hardest decision.
This is harder than choosing a college to go to.
Oh, my God.
[Laughter.]
Um, but, um, I pick Adam, please! [Audience shouting.]
- I pick Adam.
- Yes! DALY: Adam Levine steals Jackie! Get over here! You are amazing.
I'm so shocked that you picked me.
I am so shocked.
ADAM: Jackie couldn't have had a better moment.
It's the tone.
It's the precision.
It's the accuracy.
It's the emotion.
She's a beast.
She could win this whole thing.
JACKIE: [Voice breaking.]
I couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity.
And, um, I'm a rocker, and Adam Levine with Maroon 5, I feel like he could really just shape up my artistry.
And I'm I'm in shock.
[Laughs.]
Thank you.
You are amazing.
Yeah.
Like, this was the most important moment in the season for me.
- We got this.
- I cannot wait to work with you.
We got this.
Thank you so much.
You are You are in the right place, I assure you.
