The Fat Controller sat listening to angry passengers outside.
The stationmaster came in.
"There's trouble in the shed.
Henry's sulking.
" "lndeed? We cannot allow that.
" Gordon, James and Henry were cross.
"Henry, it's time for your train.
" Gordon said, "We won't shunt like tank engines.
We are important.
"You can fetch our coaches.
" "Oh? We'll see about that.
"My engines do as they're told.
" He went to find Edward.
"The yard isn't the same without Thomas," he thought.
Edward was shunting.
"Leave that," said the Fat Controller.
"l want you to push coaches.
That's a good engine.
Off you go.
" So Edward found coaches for the engines and the trains ran as usual.
But next morning, Edward looked unhappy.
Gordon hissed rudely.
"What a noise!" said the Fat Controller.
"They all hiss me," answered Edward.
"They said tender engines don't shunt.
" "Edward, l'm proud of you.
Tender engines do shunt.
"But we need another tank engine.
" He went to a workshop and they showed him lots of engines.
At last, he saw a smart green engine.
"lf l choose you, will you work hard?" "Yes, sir.
" "Good.
l'll call you Percy.
" The Fat Controller brought him back to the yard.
"Edward, here's Percy.
Show him everything.
" Percy soon learned what to do and they had a happy afternoon.
Henry came by, hissing.
"Wheesh!" went Percy.
Henry jumped and ran back to the shed.
"You wheeshed beautifully!" laughed Edward.
Percy said, "ln the workshop you have to wheesh loudly to be heard.
" Next morning, Thomas arrived.
"The Fat Controller sent for me.
" "Thomas, that was quick.
"Henry, Gordon and James are sulking, so l want you to run the line now.
" Thomas snorted, "We'll show them!" "And Percy will help too.
" "Oh, yes, sir.
Please, sir!" Edward and Thomas worked the main line, Percy took the branch line.
Thomas worried about Annie and Clarabel but the guard took care of them.
There were fewer trains but the passengers knew it was for a lesson.
Gordon, James and Henry were sad.
They wish now they hadn't been so silly.
