Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends (1984) s17e01 Episode Script

Kevin's Cranky Friend (7 min)

It was a beautiful day on the Island of Sodor but a very busy day down at Brendam Docks.
Cranky was working as hard as he could but the cargo kept on coming.
Lifting and loading.
Loading and lifting.
Does it ever stop? Whoops! Careful, Cranky! I'm always careful, Thomas! Could you unload me now? No.
You'll have to wait your turn.
Can't you see how busy I am? I'm coming! I'm coming! It may be a sunny day, matey, but if Cranky gets any crankier, I see dark clouds on the horizon.
It was a long wait before Cranky finally unloaded Thomas's flatbeds.
Now Thomas was running very late indeed.
Thomas! You should have been here an hour ago.
I'm sorry, sir, but I had to wait to be unloaded because Cranky is so busy.
Is he? I'd better get to the docks and see what's happening.
Oh, my! The Fat Controller was horrified by the chaos he saw at the docks.
Come on, Cranky! Cranky, look at this mess! What is going on here? I'm working as fast as I can, sir.
Yes.
I can see that but maybe you could do with some help.
Help? I don't need help! I'll soon have this all cleared up.
Oops! Oh! Oof! That's it, Cranky Oh! I'm getting another crane to come and help you clean up this dockside.
Another crane? But I don't need any help! Ha, ha, ha! Help be on the way, me hearty! And not a moment too soon.
Oh! Oh, watch yourself! So the Fat Controller went to the Steamworks.
Hello, Victor.
I want to know if you can spare Kevin for the day.
Yes, sir.
As you can see, we are particularly quiet.
- Kevin! - Coming! You called, boss? Ah, Kevin.
I have a special job for you.
A special? For me? Wow! I've never heard of a crane being given a special before! - Kevin.
Calm down.
- Oh, uh, sorry, boss.
I need you to go to Brendam Docks and help Cranky.
The docks? I've always wanted to go there.
And I've always wanted to meet Cranky! Excellent.
I'll make the arrangements and you can start right away.
Thomas took Kevin to Brendam Docks.
Here we are, Kevin.
Brendam Docks.
Wow! It's amazing! Kevin was so excited to be at the docks.
And he was really looking forward to meeting Cranky.
Hello, Cranky.
My name's Kevin.
I'm here to lend a helping hook.
What do you want me to do? I told the Fat Controller and I'm telling you, I don't need any help! Especially from a funny little crane like you.
But the Fat Controller said this was my special job.
Surely there's something I can do that would be helpful.
Oh, yes! Of course there is.
Go over there and stay out of my way! I don't need any help, thank you very much.
Oh, don't fret, matey.
Cranky by name and cranky by nature.
Ha, ha, you'll soon get used to his cranky ways.
Cranky continued to work on his own but there was so much to do.
Look out! - Uh-oh! - I'll get them! Kevin saw what had happened and rushed to help.
There you go, Cranky.
All done! But instead of being grateful, Cranky was furious.
That was all your fault, you silly little crane! Watching me all the time.
You're making me nervous.
Now, go back over there and stop interfering.
Bah! I can cope perfectly well on my Whoa! Shiver me axles, there be chickens! There were chickens here, chickens there, chickens running everywhere! And once again, Kevin hurried to help.
Don't worry, Cranky.
All under control! Kevin set to work.
Soon he had rounded up all the chickens.
Well done, young Kevin.
You're a credit to the crew.
But Cranky didn't think so.
I thought I told you to stay out of my way.
Whizzing all over the docks.
You're making me dizzy.
- But - No buts! Get back over there.
And stop sticking your hook in when it's not wanted.
Hello, Kevin.
How are you enjoying your day at the docks? Not very well, Thomas.
I don't think Cranky likes me.
He's not so bad when you get to know him.
Under all that gruff beats a heart of gold.
- Uh - Oh! Then there was trouble.
Kevin didn't know what to do.
Don't worry, boss! I've got it! Uh Ahhh! Oh! - Kevin! - Crane overboard! - Help! Help! - I told him to stay put.
But nobody listens to old Cranky.
Well done, matey! What is going on here? I thought I could trust you with this special job, Kevin.
I think you should return to the Steamworks immediately.
You're not helping here at all.
Kevin was so ashamed.
He had tried to be a Really Useful Crane but it had all gone horribly wrong.
And now he was being sent away in disgrace.
Uh, it wasn't his fault, sir.
It was mine.
Kevin was just trying to help.
He's a bit reckless but he's a hard worker.
And Really Useful.
Wow! Cranky does like me! And he thinks I'm Really Useful! And he even called me Kevin! What did I say? Ha, ha, ha! A heart of gold! Well, It's good to see you two getting along so well.
Carry on.
Thanks, Cranky.
Uh, what would you like me to do now? Should I stay here in the corner? I don't want to get in your way.
Uh, maybe I do need a bit of help.
After all, two hooks are better than one.
Let's get this dockside looking shipshape, shall we? Ha, okay, boss! You and me, Cranky! Oh, boy! What a team! Hoo-hoo! He's doing a fine job there, matey.
Yes, he certainly is.
But why does he have to do it so cheerfully?
