Vanished (2006) s01e08 Episode Script

Aftermath V2

I have my ISB.
MAN: Okay, let's get ready, Judy.
You're on in five, four, three This is Judy Nash, live from our studios in Washington, D.
C.
Less than 20 minutes ago, the confirmation hearing of Judge Wallace Rainer was interrupted by a possible biological attack and a shooting.
The morning began with political drama when Senator Collins publicly denounced his lifelong friend, Wallace Rainer.
Although Senator Collins did not formally cast his vote, it is clear that he was on the verge of voting against Rainer.
Only moments ago, the evacuation of Collins and the other senators plunged into further chaos, when an unidentified gunman shot into the crowd, critically wounding Special Agent Graham Kelton of the FBI.
Agent Kelton, lead investigator in the Sara Collins abduction, has been transported to George Washington Hospital, suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
The presence of Senator Collins and the shooting of Agent Kelton raise questions as to whether any of this morning's dramatic events are related to the abduction of Sara Collins.
One thing is clear.
What began as a tragedy for one Atlanta family has sent shockwaves all the way to our nation's capital.
We have some breaking news.
I've just been informed that Special Agent Graham Kelton was pronounced dead upon his arrival at George Washington Hospital.
For WCN, Washington, this is Judy Nash.
present How you doing? I'll be okay.
About six years ago I was working a mail fraud case, with an ex-lawyer named Pulaski.
We got a search warrant to open a post office box.
It's no big deal.
I served the warrant while Pulaski popped the locks.
The blast killed him before he even hit the ground.
Why are you telling me this? Because I blamed myself.
Within a year I had a stomach ulcer so bad I needed surgery to fix it.
I want you to talk to one of the traumatic incident counselors.
No, thanks.
I don't want to lose you, Mei.
At least let me transfer you off the case.
No.
I'm going to finish what we started.
(phone rings) Hello.
Hey, baby, it's me.
Daddy, we saw the news, are you okay? Yeah.
Agent Kelton I know.
When are you coming home? They have to make sure the senate building wasn't contaminated.
But soon.
I have some news.
It's good news.
Sara's alive.
I don't understand.
I thought It was a mistake.
Did they find her? No, but they, they will.
Tell your brother, okay? I have to go.
I love you.
I love you, too.
How could you do this to me? I think you know the answer.
I'd like to think that Sara's kidnapping has clouded your judgment, but what you said at that hearing is unforgivable.
I'm not the one who should be looking for forgiveness.
I had an affair.
Am I the only one here who's done that? Somebody wants you on this court very badly, Wallace.
Who? I have no idea what you're talking about.
(elevator bell dings) Hi.
Daniel Lucas, here to see Unit Chief Tyner.
Yes, sir.
Thanks.
Daniel Lucas.
Michael Tyner, nice to meet you.
Let me guess, headquarters broke the news I was coming with their usual tact and diplomacy.
That's about right.
Mm-hmm.
I know your record, Agent Lucas.
Came up through the Memphis office, transferred into Critical Incident Response Group.
Got more awards than I got socks.
When a big gun like you shows up, I've got to wonder why.
I realize I'm reporting to you, and I don't have a problem with that.
I just want to find Sara Collins, arrest the folks who grabbed her, and be home on time to use my Redskins tickets.
Welcome to Atlanta.
JUDY: yet given the all clear.
But Senator Mazarra, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, has announced that Judge Rainer's confirmation hearing will not resume until the beginning of next week.
ANCHORMAN: Judy, you mentioned the obvious timing of this attack, with the Sara Collins abduction.
Are there any updates in that case? JUDY: Yes, as a matter of fact, Marcy Collins' boyfriend, Ben Wilson, was arraigned this morning.
Just to clarify, Marcy Collins is Senator Collins' daughter, right? Ben Wilson was originally a suspect in Sara's kidnapping, but in light of recent evidence, the charges against Wilson have been reduced to fleeing the scene of a homicide and obstruction of justice.
He is being held on $200,000 bail.
Wilson, 22, was the first arrest in conjunction with the abduction of Sara Collins.
(sighs) Following the (TV shuts off) Hi, this is Marcy Collins.
I'd like to speak to my grandfather-- Senator Eugene Collins.
If you have questions, I'd be happy to get you copies of the case file.
I know what's in the case file.
I want to know what's not.
Sara Collins has been missing for almost two weeks, and I still don't know why she was grabbed.
All due respect, Agent Lucas, if you're questioning the way Graham Kelton ran this case I'm not.
All I'm saying is that his investigation into Sara's disappearance got him killed, and I want to know why.
Fair enough? Christo, Agent Lucas CID.
How you doing? You get a picture of our shooter? I downloaded all the surveillance and media footage from the exterior of the senate office building.
There's our guy-- there with the cap.
Blow it up.
Can you build a composite? Hopefully it's enough.
You're an artist, my friend.
Just catch him.
Run it for facial recognition through Homeland's Search Engine.
We don't have access.
Hey, Pajo, it's Danny Lucas.
Listen, I'm jammed up on this thing in Atlanta.
I need to search your facial recognition database.
Yeah.
I owe you one, boss.
All right.
Use it and burn it.
Good news.
Capital police just gave the all clear signal.
No biologic threat.
The bad news is that just before the alarm went off, a random security check was triggered from this field office.
Kelton asked me to do it.
He said there was no time to explain.
All right.
What do you know? Collins got his ransom demand.
The kidnappers want him to confirm Wallace Rainer.
And you didn't bother to share that with me? Graham didn't want to put you in the position of having to lie to Washington.
Does that answer your question? About why Sara was abducted? Not really.
If all they want is his vote, then why Sara? Why pull her out of a ballroom full of 200 people? Why not take one of the kids? Good question.
19 senators on the Judiciary Committee.
They all got wives, husbands, families.
Collins isn't the only one that can swing that vote.
He's right.
Jeff Collins isn't random.
Neither is Sara.
What else aren't you telling me? Graham made contact with a confidential informant.
The guy that left the Nathan cards? Yeah.
I don't know who he is, but he gave Graham the names of five politicians who died in plane crashes.
He asked me to order up NTSB reports.
What's that have to do with Sara's kidnapping? I don't know.
So you got copies of those reports? No.
I had them sent directly to Graham.
I'll order a new set.
(phone ringing) Yes? The Oval Office just called.
The president would like to speak with you.
No.
He saw the hearing, Jeffrey.
He's not happy.
I can't deal with him right now.
Just put him off.
If we lose his support, I don't know how we come back from this, Jeffrey.
You've alienated the entire party.
Well, maybe I should have done that sooner.
We'll discuss it when I get back.
Senator Collins.
Right this way, sir.
Your Gulf Stream is grounded in Richmond, due to fog.
We've taken the liberty of getting you another plane.
Thank you.
Just a minute, sir.
Wayne Blake, Senator Collins.
Welcome.
Thanks.
What's our ETA? Tail wind, so we should have you on the ground at McCollum Field a little before 3:00 p.
m.
Great.
All set.
Thanks.
After you, Senator.
Drinks and snacks in that compartment.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks.
Washington Ground, this is November Six-One- Eight.
Romeo Lima, at the west ramp, with information Charlie.
Ready to taxi for takeoff.
CONTROLLER: Attention, ground, taxi to Runway 15.
You're clear for takeoff.
Thank you, Washington.
8 Romeo Lima switching to tower frequency.
I'm so sorry, Ava.
Thank you.
Oh, it's crazy, you know? For six months, I thought the hell with him.
If he's going to let all this crap that you guys deal with turn him inside out, then I don't want that in my life.
(sobbing): And the last couple of days, I I started to think that we could make it work again.
He missed you.
Why couldn't he say that? Excuse me, Senator? We're having a little problem with the de-icing equipment.
It's probably just an electrical glitch, but we need to set down and make some quick repairs.
I'd better call Atlanta.
I already radioed ahead to base ops.
Great, thanks.
You just sit back and relax.
We'll take care of it as quickly as possible.
Okay.
Ah, you're here.
So good to see you, Grandpa.
Yes, that's right.
You lay on that sugar, young lady.
I'm still waiting to make that call to Emory University.
You're a Collins.
Anything more than a year off is slovenly.
Next semester, I promise.
Mm-hmm, sure.
But you didn't call me here for that.
Now this, this business with your stepmother how are you holding up? I'm okay.
You know, your father has a tendency to go weak when his emotions are involved.
But you do not have to make the same choice, you hear me? Good.
Now, what's on your mind? I need some money from my trust fund.
How much? $20,000.
You know, before I was a senator, I was an attorney.
Corporate law, not criminal law.
But you don't have to be a genius to know that 10% of 200,000 is 20,000, which is the bond you would have to post to get your boyfriend out of jail.
Ben had nothing to do with Sara's kidnapping.
Prisons are full of innocent men, Marcy, if you take their word for it.
The FBI arrested the woman who set him up.
The only reason Ben is in jail is because he saw a man get shot and didn't report it.
He was scared.
So he's not bad, he's just a coward? That's not a particularly good quality, either.
I love him, Grandpa.
You're in charge of the fund.
I know you can do this for me.
I have no intention of encouraging your romance with this Ben Wilson.
The young man wants to prove himself worthy, first thing he can do is keep himself out of jail.
You don't get it.
No, I do, Marcy.
I do.
You go tell your brother I'd like to say hello.
What's wrong? I asked Grandpa for money so he could bail out Ben.
And he said no.
I'm sorry.
Ben's in jail because I called the cops because I didn't trust him.
I have to fix this.
Oh, honey, I understand how you feel.
No, you don't.
And you never did.
Well, you're looking good, Eugene.
Likewise.
Jeffrey never should have divorced you.
You were good together.
We had our moments.
Mm-hmm.
So did we.
(chuckles) Gene Why don't you give Marcy that money? You can't be serious.
She really loves that boy.
Is that such a bad thing? You have changed.
Older and wiser.
Those children are your legacy, as well as mine.
You want her to end up with a thug? He's not a thug.
I just want her to be happy.
(chuckles) You know what, Jessica? I almost believe you.
Any luck? We're running the shooter's composite.
Getting close, though.
Got him.
Harris Murray.
Detroit, Michigan.
Print it.
If we got a match, why is the computer still running a search? I'm not sure.
Wait.
Tristan Marsh? Jordan Kessler.
Noah Ponpan.
The guy must have 30 different IDs.
MEI: 30 names, 30 addresses.
LUCAS: I want a list.
We're sending tach teams to every single one of them.
(engines humming) Repairs shouldn't take that long.
You can stretch your legs in the hangar.
Great.
(sighs) (gasps): What?! Watch your step.
(muffled shouting) Oh, my God.
Sara.
Let go of me! Welcome to North Carolina, Senator Collins.
God What have they done to you? Put him in the chair.
Don't leave any marks.
Please don't make this difficult, Senator.
Just untie her.
I'll do whatever you want.
You didn't.
That's the problem.
Isn't it, Sara? What do you want from us? The delays in meeting our demands have been unacceptable.
No! No! I'm sorry, but the consequences were clear.
Say good-bye, Senator.
Don't.
Please.
(sobbing) Sara! (gun clicks) (sobbing) (Jeffrey retching) Have we made ourselves clear? No more games.
Because one more delay, one more screwup-- there's a bullet in this chamber.
Please.
(muffled): Jeffrey! Please, just let me talk to her.
Let me talk to her! The FBI has identified a suspect in the murder of Special Agent Graham Kelton.
We're asking for the public's help in locating this man.
I must emphasize that he is armed and dangerous.
So, if you've seen him or have knowledge of his whereabouts, do not attempt to approach.
Contact your local law enforcement agency or FBI field office.
That's all.
Is this man involved in Sara Collins' abduction? That's a good question.
We'll let you know.
Could you tell us what kind of gun he used? I could, but then you'd have to send some poor kid running all over town trying to buy one so you can do show-and-tell on the 11:00 news.
I want to save you the trouble, Miss Nash.
Ladies and gentlemen, thank you again for your help.
If you have any further questions, there's always a friendly face at the PIO.
Oh, sulking doesn't suit you.
Don't kid yourself.
I'm way past sulk.
Why is that? Let me think about it.
Um No.
Wait.
I remember.
You're the guy I slept with last night.
Imagine my surprise when I had to find out from another reporter that you've moved to town to run the Sara Collins case.
Any comment? We made an agreement a long time ago not to mix work with play.
Remember that? Danny, I don't expect favors.
I just expected a phone call.
Don't get up.
The senator will be back in a couple of hours.
I wasn't looking for him.
What can I do for you, Jessica? You asked me what it would take to get me out of here.
Well, I think I was a little more subtle than that.
Look, we've made it through two campaigns together, J.
T.
, so let's not mince words.
Is the offer still open? It's conditional.
On what? Your immediate and graceful departure from this household, and no mention of our arrangement.
You do like to cover your tracks, don't you? How much? $20,000.
You're even cheaper than I thought.
NTSB sent over copies of the crash reports that Kelton received yesterday.
Okay.
Any idea what he was looking for? Graham didn't always keep me in the loop.
All I can tell you is that he thought there was a link between the plane crashes and Sara's abduction.
One kidnapping, five crash reports.
What's the connection here? Other than politics, I can't find anything.
Hmm.
You ever see an NTSB report before? No.
Why? Investigators' names-- they're blacked out.
Well, is that not normal? Hey.
It's Lucas.
Do me a favor.
Patch me through to the NTSB liaison.
No problem.
I'll hold.
Is there anyone you can't get to, Agent Lucas? Maggie Day, tenth grade-- dumped me like a rock.
Hey, it's Danny Lucas.
We just requested five crash reports, and one of the fields is redacted.
Did you guys happen to send us the media release copies? Uh-huh.
You mind telling me when that happened? Okay, thanks.
That's a dead end.
According to his computers, they've been blacking out names for over a year-- privacy issues.
So Kelton would have received the identical ones.
Guys? Capital Police found the shooter's jacket in a Dumpster two blocks from the Senate Office Building.
Took it to the FBI lab in D.
C.
I want to take a look at it myself.
Patch us in via Cisco.
Hey, Andy.
Mike.
What do you guys got for us? Gunshot residue on the sleeve.
This is definitely your shooter's jacket.
Now, he's a pro.
There's no tags, labels or identifying marks.
Any luck with hair or fiber? Nothing to tie him to Sara Collins.
We did find some nylon fiber-- Exhibit 1 Alpha.
Could be short-pile carpet fibers.
Possibly cloth upholstery.
Here's where it gets interesting.
You see this pocket here? When I turned it inside out, I found a dead bug.
Tiny little guy, less than a millimeter long.
Did you examine it yet? No, but I've got Trey Santino standing by at Quantico.
Bring him up.
Hey, everybody.
Where's my mystery bug? Two seconds.
Why would our shooter have bugs in his pocket, Trey? You checked yours lately? Warm and dark-- bug heaven.
Okay.
Hardened forewings, six legs.
Looks like our old friend coleoptera-- common as mud.
You got your dung beetles, ladybugs, glowworms this one here, not so common.
Tiny little body, crazy long metathorax.
Can only be one thing-- darilathris.
Does that give us anything in terms of location? Only one place in the U.
S.
-- coastal North Carolina.
Cut him up.
If he goos, he's fresh.
Can't wait.
We got goo.
Your guy's been there recently, probably within the last 48.
Thanks, guys.
I owe you a beer.
What did you get? We tied the shooter to North Carolina.
Well, if he was there, maybe Sara is, too.
None of the shooter's IDs have addresses in North Carolina.
I don't know how far this gets us.
You're the shooter.
You're part of a well-funded operation.
You don't want to leave a paper trail.
Where do you park your money? Safety deposit boxes-- easy access, no records Let's run all of his aliases against registered safety deposits in North Carolina.
Got it.
(phone rings) Tyner.
Thanks.
That was the FBO out at McCollum Field.
Senator Collins is about to touch down.
Why don't you take Agent Lucas to the estate? Don't bother.
I'll meet him on the tarmac.
Senator Collins? My name is Danny Lucas.
I'm taking over the investigation into your wife's disappearance.
I'm sorry about Agent Kelton.
Yeah.
I'd really like to go home now, Agent.
I understand, sir, but whoever killed Agent Kelton is probably involved in your wife's abduction.
I know you're the last person to talk to him.
Did he say anything? Well, he said Sara's alive.
You got a little blood on your neck, sir.
I hope you enjoyed your flight, Senator.
Is everything all right? Everything is fine.
It's just fine.
I'm sorry.
I didn't know you were in here.
(music stops) I didn't mean to interrupt you.
Is that Ben's music? Yeah.
It's nice.
Mom No.
Just listen.
I haven't been much of a mother.
I know that.
I think it's because I was so worried about where I was going that I didn't know how to enjoy where I was at.
I don't want that to happen to you.
That's why I'm going to give you the money to bail Ben out.
I would have done it sooner.
I just had my money tied up in these ridiculous short-term bonds.
Mom, it's okay.
Thank you.
I'm going to pay you back, I swear.
No, no.
Don't you worry about that.
Just think of it as an early baby present in case I miss the shower.
What are you talking about? Well, here's the thing.
I have a tiny bit of a problem.
What? Being with you and Max has been so wonderful.
But there's this big charity event that I'm helping to organize in New York, and I've completely dropped the ball.
You're leaving us for a party? I have to, sweetie.
I made a promise.
People are counting on me.
What about us? Mom, you can't do this.
Max needs you.
You are stronger than you know.
Both of you.
You're going to get through this with or without me.
Yeah.
We always do.
You were right.
We found a safety deposit box in a Currituck bank registered to a Edward Murrell, one of the shooter's aliases.
The bank records give an address? 1400 Woodruff.
Utilities confirm that the house is occupied.
Looks like we found our shooter.
Now all he's got to do is take us to Sara.
You got the downloaded satellite photos? Ready to go.
All right.
We've got entry points front and rear of the house.
We've got sniper teams covering each side, right? You got 'em.
On my go, Agent Mei and I are going to move in with two assault teams.
First move is, we're going to take down this gate.
Morrell's a high-risk fugitive, so we go in stealth without a surrender announcement.
Bravo's going to take the front; Alpha's going to take the back.
Is everyone clear? The rules of engagement are as follows: You see anyone with a weapon, deadly force can and should be used to neutralize that individual.
That's according to headquarters.
According to me, there's a good chance that Morrell might lead us to Sara Collins.
So if you happen to tag him in the shoulder rather than going for the kill shot, you're not going to hear any complaints from this end.
All right? Let's rock and roll.
(engine starts) (tires screech) (gunshot echoes) Living room clear! Kitchen's clear! Lucas, over here.
What do you got? Satellite images of the Acacia Reservoir.
(ringing) What was the trigger on that explosion? Movement sensor.
Kelton saw a diode.
Why the hell are there two wires? (phone ringing) Clear the house.
Clear the house.
Clear the house! Clear the house! (phone ringing) (panting) He knew we were in there.
He must be watching.
Zero-Two, you got any movement? (over radio): Light blue sedan just pulled out of an alley, one block from your position, traveling east on Loyola.
(tires squeal) I'm going after him; send backup.
In pursuit of light blue Cadillac, license plate number: Ocean, Paul, X-ray, 9- 3-3, Nora.
(tires squeal) (engine revs) FBI, freeze! Hands up! Hands up, now! Get down on the ground.
Hi.
Thanks for bailing me out.
(scoffs) But then again, you were the one who called the cops on me.
Ben.
I'm pregnant.
What? I found out the day they took away Sara.
You didn't tell me? I wanted to, but I was scared, and I was listening to my dad and the FBI and the news.
I couldn't think straight.
Look, Marcy, you've got to give me some time.
I need you now.
Listen to me.
Before all this happened, I didn't bring you to my family because I told you it would be easier on you.
The truth is, it was easier on me.
I just want to start over.
You're really going to have a baby? (chuckles softly) You're going to be a dad.
(both chuckling) You're leaving again.
I have to.
No, you don't.
You always say that, like you don't have a choice, but that's just crap.
Oh, Max.
If you have to go, I'm going with you.
Oh, honey.
Nothing would make me happier.
But your father would kill me.
I'll-I'll tell him it was my idea.
Pl ease, Mom? This is Judy Nash, live in Currituck, North Carolina.
We're interrupting your regular program for breaking news related to the Sara Collins kidnapping.
Less than two hours ago, the FBI descended on the home of Edward Morrell, the man believed to have shot and killed Special Agent Graham Kelton.
Before agents could apprehend him, Morrell committed suicide.
The FBI has not made public Morrell's connection to the Sara Collins case, but sources say that they have developed evidence strongly linking him to the abduction.
Meanwhile, Capitol Hill pundits are attributing Senator Collins' outburst at Judge Rainer's confirmation hearing to a breakdown brought on by the stress of his wife's abduction.
Until tomorrow, this is Judy Nash.
That's the first time I ever saw someone slit their own throat.
Yeah, well, a few weeks ago, it would have surprised me, too.
People are going to their grave to hide things.
We may never understand.
Yeah, we'll get there.
I'm an optimist.
(scoffs) Yeah, well, stick around.
Sara's got a way of shaking people up.
Fire investigators are still going through Morrell's house.
What about his car? We're ready to tow it.
I want to take a look.
Okay.
Not much here.
Do me a favor, pop the trunk.
You're going to want to take a look at this.
Oh, my God.
Pictures, transcripts, tax records MEI: Sara's entire life.
They didn't just kidnap a senator's wife.
They targeted Sara Collins, and I want to know why.
welcome to
