Vanished (2006) s01e09 Episode Script

The New World

Previously on Vanished Jeffrey ! Sara is alive.
- Ambulance! - Special Agent Graham Kelton was pronounced dead upon his arrival at George Washington Hospital.
Daniel Lucas.
When a big gun like you shows up, I've got to wonder why.
his investigation into Sara's disappearance got him killed.
What do you know? Collins' got his ransom demand.
The kidnappers want him to confirm Wallace Rainer.
Wallace Rainer is a federal judge.
You promise me that you will break this off, and I will not tell him that it was you.
If you have to go, I'm going with you.
Nothing would make me happier.
Sara! One more delay, and there's a bullet in this chamber.
Freeze! Hands up! Pictures, transcripts, tax records They didn't just kidnap a senator's wife.
They targeted Sara Collins.
In the wake of yesterday's events, I've realized that my position on the Supreme Court nomination hearings has been overshadowed by my wife's abduction, and though it's in no way an excuse, her disappearance has taken its toll on my emotional and mental well-being, and I hope Judge Rainer can forgive my earlier comments pertaining to his character.
There's been a lot of media speculation about my vote, so let me be very clear.
As soon as the Senate hearings reconvene, I will vote to confirm Wallace Rainer as a justice of the Supreme Court.
This makes me sick.
You're doing what you have to.
For Sara.
I know.
I'd also like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of FBI Agent Graham Kelton.
They're in my thoughts and prayers.
The last 11 days have been a very difficult and tumultuous time.
You're on every channel.
Yeah.
I know.
That was the idea.
Would you give us a minute, please? Certainly.
What's going on? I thought you were voting against Judge Rainer.
Sweetheart It's complicated.
Any luck getting ahold of Max? No, he's not picking up.
Dad, he'll be fine.
He's with Mom.
Yeah, that's what worries me.
Excuse me, Senator.
Wallace Rainer's on the phone for you.
I'll take it in my study.
I appreciated your public sentiments.
What you said about me was very gratifying.
I didn't say it for your sake.
I'm aware of that.
Why are you calling me, Wallace? You're doing the right thing, Jeffrey, supporting this nomination.
Answer my question.
I want to make sure that you don't change your mind.
I want to be certain that you understand how much is riding on your vote.
If they hurt her, I'll kill you.
Do you understand me? I'll see you at the hearings, Jeffrey.
Good morning, Agent Lucas.
How was North Carolina? That was so pleasant and I thought you were mad at me.
Judy, your ex-girlfriend is mad.
Judy the journalist is over it.
Half the battle.
I'll take it.
Good.
Care to comment on North Carolina? Not really.
Off the record? There's no such thing.
Judy, we can't cross that line again.
We brought back everything that survived the explosion at Morrell's house.
Those are all the photographs and documents from the trunk of Morrell's vehicle.
He'd been surveilling Sara for years.
Some of these photos were taken long before she even met the senator.
Lucas.
We found this in Edward Morrell's jacket pocket.
It's a secure satellite phone.
He only used it once, to send this text message.
Unfortunately, there's no way to trace who he sent it to.
- 26281515? - Yeah.
I mean, we've looked at the obvious.
Phone numbers, dates, Socials-- even latitude, longitude.
Nothing tracks.
I'm thinking a straight-up alphanumeric code.
He sent this at 4:32.
That's minutes before he killed himself.
Once Morrell knew he was going to commit suicide, he sent off that text message.
This guy had a file of Sara Collins and killed the lead agent on the case.
We need to break this code.
(The cause of death is pretty straightforward.
) Subject exsanguinated due to a sharp force to the neck.
Transected both the carotid artery and the jugular vein.
Self-inflicted, but no hesitation wounds.
Slit his own throat without skipping a beat.
What does that say about someone? What's that? Probably from an old injury.
Could be a bone fragment, maybe shrapnel.
Let's take a look.
That is no bone fragment.
What is it? It's an RFID chip.
Radio-frequency ID? It's basically the brains of an ID card.
You know, the kind you swipe over a reader to get you into a secure location.
So it's a key to a door.
Or a parking garage, or a gate.
Huh.
That's one way to make sure you don't lose your card.
It's not that crazy, actually.
Law enforcement in Mexico's already using this kind of implant, but the frequency in Morrell's chip doesn't match anything in our database.
Here, check this out.
Signal's unique.
Design is unique.
Whatever party this gets you into, it's exclusive.
I think we just got ourselves on the guest list.
It's evidence.
But-- I scanned the registers and made you a duplicate.
I knew I was going to like you.
Eat your veggies.
Since when did you become the vitamin patrol? I'm just trying the dad thing.
How am I doing? Not bad.
I've been thinking about moving out of my place.
I haven't nailed anything down because I was waiting to see if you wanted to split the rent with me.
You know, nothing fancy, someplace that'll be good for the kid.
If it's not what you want It's exactly what I want.
What's going on, Marce? It's my dad.
That press conference was all for show.
He hates Judge Rainer, but he's gonna vote for him, anyway.
Ben, I heard him on the phone with Rainer.
He said, "If they hurt her, I'll kill you.
" You think Rainer has something to do with Sara's kidnapping? I'm not sure.
If you really want to know what's going on talk to your dad.
You have never seen this man before? Only on the news.
He's the man who killed Agent Kelton.
Have you ever seen him anywhere else? I'm sorry, but the consequences were clear.
Say good-bye, Senator.
No.
No, I'm sorry.
Edward Morrell was keeping a surveillance dossier on your wife.
We're trying to determine how he got so close to Sara.
We lead very public lives.
Agent Lucas, you're the new lead agent on the case now.
I'd like to know what you're thinking.
I'm thinking I like you better when you're not lying.
- Lucas - Let him finish.
You speak your mind, sir.
You've never been a guy to keep your opinions to yourself, and you don't toe the party line when you disagree with it.
Which means it must be killing you to lie to the world about how you now support Wallace Rainer.
I have got to vote for him.
You're not going to convince me otherwise.
It wouldn't be our place to try.
Excuse me.
Lucas.
Those numbers on Morell's sat-phone, I think we figured it out-- Gulf & Atlantic freight train number 2628.
The train arrives in the Atlanta railyard at 15:15 military time today.
An hour from now.
Good work.
Senator, if you'll excuse us.
- What was that about? - It's a possible lead.
I'll let you know if it pays off.
Thank you for your time, sir.
Sure.
Here we go.
The train's not even stopping.
Looks like Christo got it wrong.
I wouldn't be too sure.
There.
You see? Got to have a little faith.
Should we go down and intercept? Not yet.
It's definitely a transfer point.
I wonder what's in the box.
Pupil reactions are slow.
No.
No.
No! Motor functions are sluggish.
Please talk to me.
BP 76/50, pulse rate 89, body temp 100.
8.
Jeffrey he'll give he'll give you money.
He'll give you whatever you want.
All vitals are down.
11 days without adequate food or sleep.
I know he will.
He Sleep deprivation interfering with mental focus, but subject is lucid and is able to maintain consciousness.
What do you want me to say? What do you want me to do?! Why won't why won't you talk to me? She's ready.
No.
We've already used this angle.
There's got to be a different way to shoot this house.
We've walked around it twice.
Come on, Judy.
Get your camera ready.
Thanks, Ben.
- See you tonight? - Yeah.
Miss Collins! Marcy! Sorry.
I guess I can understand that.
This must be a crappy time to be the Senator's daughter, with all this craziness.
And I bet the Feds are treating you like a kid, or breathing down your neck asking you five million questions you don't want to answer.
Anyway, I didn't mean to bother you.
But, if you ever want to talk, even off the record, call me.
No strings.
Hey.
Dad, I need to talk to you.
Okay.
I know you don't want to talk about the nomination, but I do.
Marcy I heard you talking to Judge Rainer this morning.
Well, he called to thank me.
This has something to do with Sara, doesn't it? Marcy, I told you, it's it's just too complicated to explain.
Dad, you tried to explain to me the line item veto when I was eight.
Why can't you explain this? Don't make me lie to you.
You are being blackmailed.
Judge Rainer is a part of this, isn't he? - Marcy, listen to me.
- You can't let him do this! I will do whatever I have to to get Sara back! I'm sorry.
No.
I'm sorry I upset you.
This is Agent Lin Mei.
I need a DMV search on two license plate numbers: Georgia-Bravo-Bravo-Lima- 2-3-6-Hotel, Georgia-Golf-Romeo-Alfa- 8-4-2-Tango.
We're in pursuit, heading east on Industry.
DMV has no record of either of the license plates from the railyard handoff.
Good.
Fake tags.
Must be following the right guys.
Call for backup.
What are you doing? I thought I saw a Starbucks down there.
We don't have a warrant.
We don't have cover.
Yeah, well, Sara might be inside.
I'm not waiting around.
Put your headset on.
We lose contact, I'm coming in after you.
I'd appreciate that.
You haven't been fed in days.
I imagine you're pretty hungry.
It's not poisoned, if that's what you're thinking.
I'm sorry that you've been treated so poorly.
But, from now on, you'll be under my care.
They injected me with something.
It's for your protection, so you won't get lost again.
I want to talk to my husband.
I'm sorry.
They won't allow that.
Is he all right? What did they they do to him in that airport hangar? He's safe.
He's back home in Atlanta.
They're making a huge mistake.
Jeffrey will never stop until he finds me.
He's going to come for me, and he's going to take me home.
So you can tell them to go to hell.
How do you know he's looking for you? Because he loves me.
Okay.
What? It's just that, if that's true, why hasn't he given in to their demands? What are you talking about? When you saw Jeffrey at that airfield, they were punishing him because he wouldn't give them what they had asked for.
The delays in meeting our demands have been unacceptable.
No.
I'm sorry, but the consequences were clear.
He refuses to cooperate.
I don't believe you.
It's as if he doesn't really want to help you, Sara.
Well, I'll be back later.
Enjoy your meal.
Lucas, where are you? I'm outside a window, about to go in.
Well, I found our courier.
He's got some friends.
They're opening up the box.
It's some sort of document.
It looks old.
Give me a minute.
I'm going to walk the perimeter.
They got some kind of lab set up down there.
Lucas, what's going on? Whatever we thought about this case, it's time to rethink it.
I saw you shivering.
I thought you could use a blanket.
It's understandable that you'd feel betrayed by Jeffrey's lack of action.
Do you know when you saw Jeffrey at that airplane hangar, he was coming home from Washington.
He'd been at some meeting on Capitol Hill.
Business as usual.
He seems unaffected by your absence.
He was devastated when he saw me in that airport hangar.
He's a politician.
He turns his emotions on and off for the benefit of whoever's watching.
Jeffrey loves me.
He loved what you did for his career.
After Jessica left him, he'd have been voted out of office but then he met you.
I've worked with many people in your situation, Sara, and I'll tell you the one thing that kills them is hope.
Why are you doing this to me? You need to adjust your expectations, if you're going to make it through this.
Are you going to kill me if I cancel on you tonight? I wouldn't be happy.
Why, you got a better offer? No, I'm just really tired.
This whole pregnancy thing kind of takes it out of you.
You want me to call you later? Marce? Can you do me a favor? Can you just tell me that everything's going to be all right? Everything's going to be all right.
Did you talk to your dad? Not yet.
I was probably just overreacting.
I just need to get some rest, that's all.
I'll talk to you in the morning, okay? Yeah.
I love you.
I love you, too.
That document looks like some sort of parchment.
They're scanning it into a computer.
They're putting together some kind of puzzle.
They don't sound like kidnappers.
No, these are our guys.
The guards have the same wrist tattoos we've seen before.
There's a roomful of data servers down here.
A guy just logged on to the system.
What do you mean, "down here"? I'm on the warehouse floor.
Lucas, they're not going anywhere.
Wait for backup.
I am waiting.
I'm just making good use of the time.
I found our door.
All right, patch me through to Christo.
Lucas, you're on with Christo.
All right.
I'm logged on to a computer.
I'm kinda not supposed to be here.
I need you to trace my PDA signal and open up a link.
Anything in particular I'm looking for? Upload first, ask questions later.
You getting this? Let me know when it's later so I can start asking those questions.
Step away.
Keep it slow.
What was that? Mei, get ready to fire your weapon.
What's going on over there? How did you get that I.
D.
? Look, take it easy.
This place is surrounded by FBI agents.
Think about how you want this to go down.
On your knees now.
Now, Mei.
Security breach! Evac protocol! Evac protocol! Data download's been interrupted.
Agent Lucas? FBI! - You okay? - Yeah.
They took everything.
Except their data servers.
All right, thanks.
Christo analyzed the data upload.
All he got was a paragraph or two of Hebrew text.
Given the ancient parchment, we're thinking Biblical.
Quantico's sending an expert.
While searching for Sara Collins, we encountered a group of wackos digitizing an ancient Hebrew text, possibly the Bible.
Well, don't forget to mention they were heavily armed.
Lucas, how in the world is Sara's abduction connected to what you saw today? I have nothing to say to you.
All right.
I just thought you might want to join me out here.
They said it's okay.
Come on.
Can I get you a water? Sara, I know how hard it must be to know you were living a lie.
But it doesn't mean you have to give up.
I'm not giving up.
The physical conditioning you've been subjected to, the advanced facility you're in, the level of organization around you Why would they go to this much trouble if they thought you were going to leave anytime soon? Why would these people show you their faces, if they thought you'd ever turn against them? Why would I bother working with you, if I thought your husband was coming to take you home? Sara, you're here to stay.
I'm sorry.
I want you to leave me alone.
Get out.
Jeffrey's moved Jessica back into your house.
No, he would never He hates her.
Is that what he told you? He's not the person you think he is, Sara.
He's moving on with his life.
You must feel very alone right now.
But people are worried about you.
People here, people who have known you for a very long time.
Longer than Jeffrey's known you.
You're going to be all right.
The thermite that melted the computers was military-spec.
They've used military ordinance before.
In the explosions at the ransom drop and the Quarry Tunnel.
The whole system crashed when the charges went off.
Christo printed out what we was able to get through the uplink.
Nadia Sands-- specialist in ancient religions and the occult.
Agent Daniel Lucas.
This is an unbelievable find.
This is one of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Or rather, it should have been.
Ezekiel 40 was never found.
The Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest surviving transcription of the Bible.
When they were discovered in 1947, several chapters were missing.
- Including Ezekiel 40? - Exactly.
About ten years ago, there was a rumor that Ezekiel 40 had finally been discovered during an illegal excavation under the Temple Mount.
A theologian named Aaron Hensleigh had claimed that he had seen a portion of the scroll.
We're going to have to talk to him.
I already know our first question: Why are Sara's kidnappers obsessed with an ancient biblical text? Where do we find this Hensleigh? - Prison.
- Prison? He murdered his wife and his three colleagues.
A theologian who commits murder.
So much for the Sixth Commandment.
Dr.
Hensleigh is on death row.
His execution date is set for five days from today.
Obviously, the stress of Sara's disappearance has been very hard on you.
Tell the kidnappers to give Sara back or I'll tell everyone about us.
Well, they'll just say you're a a spoiled teenager desperate for attention.
I'm pregnant.
It's yours.
That's not possible.
Sure it is.
Come on, you're a smart man.
Two months ago.
In your office.
This gets out and your career is over.
You're not serious.
Tomorrow-- either you go public and withdraw your nomination or I go public about our baby.
I asked them if I could come in and get Graham's things.
Of course, Ava.
You take all the time you need.
I tried to call when I heard about Graham.
I turned my phone off.
- Everybody means well, but - Yeah.
Well, if you ever do need to talk I know where to find you.
It's okay, I got it.
Come on, baby, let's go.
The senator's wife has been missing for 12 days now.
And though law enforcement remains fully committed to the search, the FBI has reported no new developments in the case, leading some to wonder if the trail is growing cold.
As for the senator himself, at a news conference early this morning, Jeffrey Collins stated that, as soon as the Judiciary Committee reconvenes, he will vote to confirm Wallace Rainer, the President's nominee to the Supreme Court.
In an emotional statement, he confessed that his wife's disappearance has taken a toll on his "emotional and mental well-being.
" In response, the White House issued its own press statement, thanking Jeffrey Collins for "his extraordinary service to the country and his unwavering dedication as a leader in the senate.
" The president also personally urged the public to join him in praying for Sara Collins' safe return.
For WCN News, I'm Judy Nash.
Sara Sara Who's there? Who are you? You're not alone.
