Waking the Dead (2000) s01e04 Episode Script

Burn Out: Part 2

I want to know when Mike Coleman will be fit enough to be interviewed.
Well, is it going to be next week, next year, next month You know? Yep Yeah.
We will trace it back.
Who's he talking to? The Met.
They have no clues to go on.
They like footprints and chewing gum at the crime scene.
- A suspect with feet and teeth! - Not you, then! These are my own teeth - most of them! We can interview Mike Coleman - he's fit enough.
Fantastic.
What's the connection between Mike's attack and Coleman's death? There has to be a connection.
I've got a feeling.
You've based the whole case on your feelings.
That's what we do.
We're a cold-case squad if you hadn't forgotten.
Let's just get on! All right.
Nine years ago, Perry Coleman was killed when his car caught fire.
What stopped us thinking it was an accident? The daughter.
The hazard lights went on after the moment of impact, and there was a suicide note.
The second explanation was suicide.
Yep, I ran some routine tests on the letter.
One test revealed handwriting from another piece of paper which was on top of the suicide note.
It was for a job application advertised in the press in 1996 - three years after Perry died.
The post was filled by Mike Coleman - Coleman's younger brother.
Who's involved with Coleman's wife.
I know every suicide has unique motivation, but I feel that Perry Coleman would not have wanted to die in this way.
After his experiences in the war, he may have suffered blackouts, periods of destructive rage, but he wasn't in the frame of mind to plan a cold, premeditated suicide - let alone write a letter expressing it.
So a third possible explanation for Perry Coleman's death is? Murder.
Murder.
Why aren't the Met questioning Mike? Because I want him And YOU will do the questioning.
What did Mike say about the attack? He's sticking to the burglary story.
Can we rule out Gwen as an accomplice? We'll see about that.
Mel's on Mike Coleman.
Grace'll do Gwen.
Frankie, search the house.
And, Spence, use your charm on Marina Coleman - I want you to keep her right out of the way! Should we go for an exhumation order? Cause of death will be hard to establish after nine years.
Mike and Gwen don't know that.
It may panic them into something.
Yeah.
OK, you set the process in motion.
OK.
Thanks for a very constructive meeting, anyway! Are you sure you're well enough for this? Do we have a choice? Hi! Mum and Mike have been called in for questioning.
Why? Let's go for a drive.
Why can't we just talk here? OK.
Am I under caution? Not officially - we could arrange it if you want.
In which case, I have to have a lawyer present.
No, no, no! Take it easy with him.
Soften him up.
Start with the crash.
Let's go through the events leading up to your brother's death in 1992.
That's a long time ago.
The last time you saw your brother, what frame of mind was he in? Well, he wasn't bad, considering.
He was going to meet Marina GRACE: Perry stayed with his brother in the weeks leading up to the accident? Yes, he was looking for a place to live.
Oh, you'd separated? It was over.
The marriage had probably been over for years, but we just didn't face up to it.
And when he started behaving violently What was the point? I asked him to move out.
Solet's go back to the Sunday it all happened.
Well, Perry was supposed to be taking Marina out for lunch, but he turned up early to get stuff.
Then he said he couldn't take Marina out because he was meeting a friend, Rod Brogan.
MIKE: Perry moved in with me They were friends in the army.
Mel, check if he was meeting anyone and what he was carrying.
Just bring it forward to the day of the crash.
Did he plan to meet anyone else that day? He didn't mention it.
Carrying anything with him? The usual, probably.
The usual? He always had a camera on him - that's how he made his living.
Then why were no cameras recovered from the area of the car crash? Search me.
We'll start from the top.
I want loft, ceiling cavity, water pipes, air vents, everything checked.
Some crucial evidence was returned to the family after the investigation, so think of where they may have hidden the things we're after One identity tag, partially damaged, one roll of film, badly damaged, one wrist watch, badly burnt .
.
and one washing bag also burnt.
So, tell me about the suicide note.
Oh, it was five years ago.
Mike had moved in and I still hadn't touched a thing of Perry's.
Where did you find it? Mike found it.
In the bureau, with our marriage certificate, and stuff like that.
Oh Were you with him when he found it? No Actually, I was out.
He, er, showed it to me when I got back.
What reason did he give for searching through the bureau? He said he was clearing it.
He wanted to put the past behind us MIKE: It was in the summer, about four years after Perry's death.
How long had you been living in your brother's old house? Gwen's house I don't know, a few months.
Ask him why he was in the bureau.
So why did you decide to look in the bureau then? Looking for envelopes probably.
That's pathetic! Hit him with the insurance details.
Four years after Perry's death That's when the insurance company agreed on the sum for Perry's accidental death.
Confront them both with the letter! Gwen, I think you ought to know we've done some tests on the suicide note.
The letter could only have been written five years ago.
The ink wasn't manufactured before then.
And from other marks on the paper, we know that the letter was faked.
How do you feel about that? MIKE: No, you've got it wrong.
We have forensic evidence to prove that you wrote it.
You're wrong.
The least you're looking at is fraud.
I can see where all this is heading.
So what did you do that afternoon? I'm not saying anything else.
Do you have an alibi for that day? He's clamming up.
You lied about the accident, and tried to make it look like suicide! I put it to you, you wanted your own brother dead.
Now, Mel.
This looks promising.
Well, whatever was in there, isn't any more.
Burnt plastic.
I've called the duty solicitor, is that OK? Chin OK? You're sticking to the burglary story, are you? That's OK.
I've had suspects lose the power of speech for days.
You know It doesn't really bother me .
.
because I'm an extremely patient man.
We're going to dig up your brother's body.
Well we're going dig up what's left of your brother's body.
We've had the coroner's permission to do that.
You don't approve? It's not a pleasant thing to do, but then .
.
you're not a very pleasant man.
Mmm? The way you've lied to those two womenfor years.
The way you've used Gwen for years Five years.
Why did you do that? Were you SO jealous of your brother? Did you feel so inadequate, pathetic? just a useless lump of nothing.
Hmm? Did it make you feel something when you slept with your brother's wife? I wonder if she felt anything Or I wonder if she just missed your brother, all the time.
I mean, did you match up? Mmm? Probably didn't, did you? You can tell me, you know.
Were you as useless in that area as you have been in the rest of your life? Mmm? We've got a lot to talk about, haven't we? Let's, um, let's have a cup of tea.
Yeah? Why do you need to take my DNA? Can you open up, please? You don't think I'M a suspect? Course not! It's just to check any traces relating to your father.
You share half your DNA with him.
That's not ALL I share with him.
He was stubborn, headstrong, never knew when to stop either.
Right, yeah When theinvestigation was over, what happened to your father's personal possessions? Most of them went to my mum.
I got a penknife .
.
and I got this.
You won't find anything of his at their house.
Why? I saw Mike, a couple of hours ago, going down to the dump with a plastic bag.
Why didn't you tell us? I didn't want to interfere.
Thought I'd leave it to the experts.
Frankie? Bad news.
Mike's removed some of the evidence from the house.
He's taken it down to the dump.
Yeah, she didn't want to interfere.
Then I had second thoughts.
Hold on.
I followed Mike to the dump, picked this up when he left.
Frankie, I think we may be in luck though.
I can't believe there's anything still in there.
Well It was thrown clear by the explosion.
The dampness of the contents protected it from the heat.
That looks like a cross and possibly a roll of film? That looks like a disposable razor blade.
Can we get any DNA from the razor? Let's find out.
It's been dried out by the heat, but plastic is a pretty good seal.
Remember that mosquito in Jurassic Park sealed in amber? Yeah.
This molten plastic has acted a bit like that.
Look, you can see.
These hair fragments are perfectly preserved, I might get some DNA from the hair, and if we're lucky, we might even get some skin.
Could you identify it as Perry's? We could try and cross-match it with Marina's swab, yeah.
Great.
Have you got that cross? Um Mm-hm.
Cos lookat this.
It's the same.
This is Rod Brogan.
Why is Brogan's cross in Perry's washbag? Gwen said Brogan went to meet Perry on the day of the crash.
Brogan's in the army.
So find out about Brogan.
OK.
We need to see what's on that film, too.
Brogan was a fellow soldier with Coleman in the Paras.
Both joined in the early '80s.
The Paras still have a blood sample.
Do you want them to send it over? It may be nothing but check him out anyway.
What will we do about the brother? We have nothing putting him at the scene.
Get a DNA swab from him - see if that loosens him up.
If he objects? Say we're trying to eliminate him from our enquiries.
OK this is the film from the sponge bag.
Our only hope is that the casing wasn't so corroded that the images are over exposed.
Looks like our luck just ran out.
Unless he was taking photos of black cats in the dark.
Or white cats in the snow.
This is a negative.
Hold that a sec.
Where does that leave us? Can you see these scratch marks and striations here? Those just came from the camera casing.
Exactly, they are as unique in their own way as the scratch marks on the side of a bullet.
They tell us which camera was used.
If I could get some original negatives of Perry Coleman's, we'd know if these were shot on the same camera? Yeah.
I can't find any negs, and I haven't got any either.
I wish I did - they'd be worth some money now.
Hang on Maybe the scratches will show up on a print.
Here you go Take this.
Was this taken with your dad's Leica? Yeah, he's holding it.
Oh.
Him and that camera were inseparable.
Look after it.
That's the last thing he gave me.
Really? Do you think that Mike killed? Marina It doesn't matter what we think.
We just go wherever the evidence leads us.
Thanks.
DOOR SLAMS FOLLOWED BY FOOTSTEPS I couldn't get any negatives.
We can see if this print'll do.
Mm-hm.
You got a blood sample from the army? Yeah .
.
and it matches the DNA.
The wash bag was definitely Rod Brogan's.
So Brogan's our prime suspect.
Coleman, Brogan Friends in the army.
They left about the same time.
Perry became a photographer, Brogan a mercenary.
Then they both meet up in Yugoslavia at the beginning of the Serb-Croat war in '91.
It was Brogan's connections with the Serb paramilitaries that gave Coleman and his camera access to the front line.
OK, Spence I ran Brogan's name through various databases.
NCIS came up trumps.
In 1992, he was under investigation for war crimes in former Yugoslavia.
What was the allegation? He was a volunteer for a paramilitary group called the Black Wolves.
They were alleged to be behind several atrocities in the war zone including the one where Perry Coleman took the photographs of the hospital.
So Perry and Brogan were together at the time of the massacre and on the day of Perry's death.
I haven't got a track on Brogan since '93, but we know that he boarded a plane to Canada three days after Perry Coleman died.
What if Coleman had evidence incriminating Brogan in the massacre? Photographic evidence, probably.
That would be enough motive for Brogan to want him dead.
But if there's something linking Brogan to the killing, why didn't Perry publish it? Fear? I don't know.
Maybe he was threatening Coleman or his family.
Misplaced loyalty to a friend? Maybe he just couldn't go through with the horror of it.
Perhaps that was the film that was destroyed in the crash.
Hang on though.
What would you do if you had something that could put somebody away for years? I'd have insurance.
A copy.
Where would you hide it? Oror you'd give it to somebody you could trust.
This is where Mike Coleman comes in.
I just know he's involved somehow.
You're wasting your time.
Why? The scratches were on the BACK of the negatives.
They won't come out on any prints.
Well, I've done it now.
Mel, you'd better put it back.
Frankie Mmm? Here they come It looks like the sequence he won the awards for.
But now we have the whole picture.
I don't think I like the look of this.
It's the massacre.
Perry was there throughout it all.
Spence! Come and have a look at this.
So Brogan wasn't upset by what he'd seen He was upset by what he'd DONE.
Hang on, stop there.
Zoom in on the nurse.
It's the same cross.
I get it.
The cross is a trophy for Brogan.
A trophy from one of his kills.
Someone like Brogan fights for whoever pays the most.
He's not motivated by politics.
He enjoys killing for the sake of it.
You can call him a mercenary, but he's really a serial killer in uniform.
I'd better get some prints made up.
Are you OK? No, not really.
He's still out there somewhere.
I hope we get Brogan back to the country.
I've got PNC, DVLA, DHSS - all the agencies - doing cross-searches and matches.
We'll get the bastard.
So, there it is That's your brother's body.
After 9 years, it's not going to look very good.
Did you have any breakfast? Sorry.
This must be very upsetting for you.
Umif there's one thing Marina's taught me, it's when things aren't resolved, they never rest.
Before you go, could you tell me a little bit more about Roderick Brogan? Um, yeah He was an old friend of Perry's.
He was the best man at our wedding, but they fell out.
When was that? I don't know.
It was something that happened in the war.
Perry never talked about it much.
If they fell out, why did Perry go to meet Brogan on the day of his death? I didn't ask.
I just thought they were trying to patch things up.
Did you see him again? No, I reckon he must have gone back abroad.
I was a bit upset though Yeah.
He didn't even come to the funeral.
Are you ready? Remember that is your brother in there.
When they unzip the bag, it won't be pleasant, so .
.
If you want, the best thing you can probably do is to take a deep breath.
If you've got a handkerchief, perhaps you could Just wait here.
Do you mind if we have an observer? What are you doing? I want this guy to observe You're not turning my path lab into a bloody theatre! This is really important! I don't care! Will you get him out of my lab! Listen Get him out now! Sir! What? We've got our smoking gun.
Photographic evidence of Brogan's involvement in the massacre, and we've traced Brogan back to this country.
Put an arrest team on standby.
And Mike? Leave him to me.
Grace! There's a chance Brogan's still in the UK.
Why not? We thought it was accidental death.
But why is Mike helping Brogan to cover up his brother's murder? Maybe it's blackmail.
Is that the best you can come up with? Yeah Yeah, do you want to sack me and get a better profiler? That's a very good idea Very good.
Thanks.
You're free to go.
We're not pressing charges.
What about the letter? The CPS will decide what to do about that.
Can we give you a lift? No, I'm fine.
No.
We'll give you a lift.
Come on.
I apologise for what I put you through earlier.
I was on the wrong track.
Something new has come up.
We've located your brother's friend, Rod Brogan.
Oh, really.
I'll let you know what happens in the next couple of hours.
If it's all the same with you, I'm going to walk.
Thanks, anyway.
Once again, I AM sorry.
It's me.
Get out now.
Repeat, get out now.
They're on their way.
Spence, hold on.
I want a print-out of the last number dialled from here.
That's 027-976-1325.
Ring me back.
.
.
That's right, Plus the address.
Quick as you can.
The preliminary examination shows limb fractures consistent with a high-impact RTA.
But we'll start with a positive identification.
There are several cavities in the subject's teeth, but no dental records Erthe body is badly charred, so any chance of getting any DNA material is pretty small.
What about the arm? There may be some undamaged muscle protected by the watch strap.
The caretaker confirms that the tenant is called R Brogan.
Last seen an hour ago.
Let's go.
All clear.
Thank you.
Still cold.
Say about half an hour ago.
Mike must have tipped him off.
We're getting there, getting closer.
Glen, are you sure these samples are from the daughter? Can you take another sample from the body to double-check? Fresh? Yeah.
What have you got? I didn't know Brogan was a photographer.
This is getting weirder and weirder It's Marina.
Why is Brogan stalking his victim's daughter? She's close to the truth.
This is me He's been following me.
This is dangerous stuff.
He's a killer.
Get Marina into protective custody.
Why is he coming out of hiding now? We'll get a profile on him.
Hi.
Hi.
No wonder they were trigger happy.
These mercenaries are all ex-gangsters, living on a diet of cola and milk.
Are you OK? I'm having trouble with the ID on the body.
Have you got DNA from the remains? Yeah, but doesn't match Marina's.
What do you mean? There is no way that body and Marina are related.
I don't understand.
Either the body doesn't belong to Perry Coleman We had a positive ID! .
.
Or Perry is not genetically Marina's father.
That would explain why Brogan's following the girl.
What are you talking about? If she's not Coleman's kid, then maybe she's Brogan's.
You must be joking.
He was best man at the wedding - best man in more ways than one! You've got a sick mind.
You need one in this business John OK.
Great.
Let me just get a pen.
How am I going to do this? Tell her that the man she adored all her life is not her real father? Or that it's not his body and he's still alive.
I know which one I'd rather hear.
Do you want ME to tell her? No The Chinese think I'm responsible, don't they? This DNA pattern looks familiar.
I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before.
Can you get out the Brogan file? Where are the negatives of the massacre? Where they're meant to be.
Thanks.
It seems that your father had this evidence that Brogan was involved in war crimes in Yugoslavia.
It's possible that he might have killed your father because of that.
I knew it.
I knew it! I knew he was not going to die by committing suicide or by accident.
He was going to die for something that he believed in.
They're the same I don't get it.
What are the same? The scratch marks.
I don't believe it.
Where's Boyd? He's upstairs talking to Marina.
That's what I was afraid of.
Oh, NOW I do! Marina When you get involved in DNA comparisons, it can become complicated Can I have a word, please? I'm just talking to Marina.
It's about that.
Now, please.
I'm sorry, Marina.
Just give me a second.
What a time to pick! The DNA pattern looked familiar, so I compared it to the hair found in the wash bag.
Sir.
Hang on.
Whose body is on the slab down there? OK, the body we exhumed today is Rod Brogan's.
Oh, great(!) What's that? My psychological autopsy on Rod Brogan.
The negs in Brogan's flat and the ones of the massacre Both were taken with Perry Coleman's Leica.
Wait.
You're telling me that Rod Brogan is dead.
Mm-hm.
Get everyone together And, Mel, make sure Marina Coleman gets home.
OK.
Brogan is dead, but Perry has been using his identity, so Perry is still alive.
Body switch.
Which is why Mike is happy for it to be murder, accident, suicide It means his brother is protected.
But what I don't understand is who attacked Mike? Maybe it was Perry.
Possible - brothers fall out.
Maybe Perry found out about Mike and Gwen? No.
From what I gather, the marriage was over before he left.
His main concern is Marina.
Bring Mike in for questioning.
He won't say anything now! Grace, what do you think? Well, we now know Coleman was somehow involved in the murder of Brogan.
He takes his identity, he flees the country.
Now, for some reason, he's back, and he's secretly visiting his daughter.
Why? Why is he doing that? Perry was the only one at the car when Brogan died, so he must have killed him.
But by coming back, he risks having the case re-opened and being caught.
He must stop Marina - she's on his trail.
Look at these pictures.
They're taken by a man who needs to confront the truth.
My guess - a guess - is that he needed to come back to face the one person who still admires him.
That's why he's been stalking her.
Is he a danger to her? Oh, he could be.
PHONE RINGS It's OK.
You don't have to say anything.
You're much more beautiful than your photos.
Photos? Mike sent me photos, of you growing up.
I kept 'em all.
Mike sent you photos of me? They were the only thing that got me through.
Got YOU through? What was supposed to get ME through?! I thought you were dead.
We all thought you were dead.
Ssh, it's OK.
I'm back.
No.
No, it's not.
It's not OK, I'm not a kid, or have you not noticed that? Nine years! You disappeared for nine years.
Why have you come back? CAR ENGINE The police are here.
You've got to go.
It's over, Marina.
No, it's not.
Come on.
Armed police, show yourselves! Come here! Actually, give ME the keys! Give me the keys.
She's gone.
Me? Yep.
It's blood.
Frankie.
Frankie, I want you to check this out for me.
Yeah, leave it there.
I'll do it in a minute.
It IS urgent.
It always is! I do have other work to do.
I think it's Perry Coleman's blood.
Well, I can't guarantee I'll get it done quickly.
Quick as you can, eh? Yeah, thanks, Frankie.
Really appreciate it(!) It's all right.
He's told me everything.
Mike helped cover up Brogan's death and conspired to pervert the course of justice.
I don't know what happened in the car.
Perry was in a real state.
He couldn't explain the crash.
He's my brother.
I had to help him.
Throughout this investigation you've blocked our enquiries! Who attacked you that night? Perry.
Why? Had Perry just found out about you and Gwen? THEY LAUGH What's so funny? You don't understand.
Enlighten us please.
Perry wasn't like that.
He wasn't interested in me.
All he cared about was Marina.
He thought I was threatening her.
You were.
She had misgivings about her father's death and you rubbished them to protect him.
No, you just don't understand.
I was doing it to protect her .
.
From her father and from herself.
Unfortunately, it's a bit late for that now.
Marina has been kidnapped by Perry or is helping him evade arrest.
She may be in serious danger.
Any idea where they might have gone? Of course not.
We'd tell you.
You've got to find her! We're trying our best.
If Perry or Marina get in touch, call us.
Come on.
Please promise me you'll find her! Any news? No, I've got surveillance teams at Coleman's house, Marina's flat, Brogan's bedsit, and I've heard absolutely nothing.
What about the crash site? What about it? It's a strong compulsion to retrace your steps to the scene of the crime.
Sometimes, it's the only way a victim or a perpetrator can come to terms with what's happened.
Think about it What would YOU do in that situation? A father, apparently dead, comes back to his daughter after nine years.
Imagine it.
If you could go back, what would you do? What would you say? Sorry.
That's all right, Grace.
I'd go back to the last time I saw him .
.
And try to talk to him.
I'd go back to the time.
.
.
And, yes .
.
The place.
Get your coat.
Do you want me to leave? Yep With me.
Boyd, do you want the good news or the bad news? On what? On the blood test.
Oh, right Grace.
It's definitely Perry Coleman's.
But there are abnormalities in the white blood cells.
Meaning? Well, obviously, I'll do some further tests, but it looks like leukaemia - acute myeloid leukaemia.
Left untreated, I'd give him less than six months.
Why here, Marina? I'm doing what YOU taught me to do - face the truth no matter what the cost.
I'm not sure I can face this.
You met Rod Brogan? He thought you had something on him - that you were going to expose him over his role in the massacre.
You make it sound so simple.
You don't understand.
Don't patronise me! Of course I don't understand.
Were you going to blackmail him? I wasn't trying to blackmail HIM He was trying to blackmail ME.
You didn't pull the trigger.
All you did was take photos.
That's all you did.
That's it.
That's all I did - took pictures - while innocent people pleaded for their lives.
People younger than you, begging me to intervene, begging me to be a braver man.
He jeered at me.
He said I'd made my name, my money, by other people's deaths.
He said I was a mercenary, just like him.
Brogan deserved to die.
You didn't.
I was as guilty as him, Marina.
You stand by, a witness.
You see enough dead faces, you don't want to live anymore.
The man YOU knew died here.
So you swapped identities? Yeah.
You ran away! Because of YOU! For YOU! Why have you come back? I needed to protect myself.
From? From you - from what you'd think of me.
Sounds pathetic, but I need you to think well of me.
That is pathetic.
What do you want me to say? That I love you? You're my daughter? I'd do anything for you? It's a start.
I can't go on running, Marina.
You've got to get on with your lifewithout me - just like you did before.
I won't be around much longer.
Marina! No! Oh, not again, Marina! Get away from that car.
YOU get away! Why aren't we arresting him? We will! Spence! No guns! Be careful now.
Please, leave us alone! He hasn't done anything wrong! Marina, you'll blow us all up! Run, Dad! You'll blow us all up Put your guns down.
What's going on? Guns down! Your father's not going anywhere.
Ask him yourself.
You're going nowhere! What's the matter? Just put your guns away! Now! Shit! Why do you think he's not running away now? Ask him! Oh, God, no.
I don't know what's going on! There's no need for her to know.
Give me the lighter, Marina.
Give me the lighter.
Go and talk to your father.
Marina go and talk to your father.
He's got something to tell you.
