Waking the Dead (2000) s03e08 Episode Script

Final Cut: Part 2

We've got four victims in Marlow House - one, two, three, four.
Two white males found under the floorboards.
They had massive head injuries.
Frankie says the injuries are consistent with a fight similar to the one in the film Projection.
It's a possibility.
One man defending himself with an object against two attackers.
As in the film.
As shown in the film.
So it seems.
Yeah.
Another Marlow House victim - Philip Stein - was found walled up behind the chimney breast.
He was killed with a hand gun, and badly mutilated.
Frankie's got something new on this.
Body two.
This is the man walled up in the ground-floor flat.
At first it looked like he'd had his skull crushed.
But later we found the bone hadn't collapsed inward but blown outward.
Large-bore shotgun.
Exit wound.
Close range.
These pittings are from muzzle blast.
We suspect that these three different types of death are separate events.
What do you mean? Marlow House is a dumping ground for a selection of murders.
PHONE RINGS Hello? There's nothing to connect them.
Yeah, hang on a sec.
Excuse me.
I thought we had an understanding.
What we were talking about was between the two of us.
It was.
Was? Or is? You can't trust anybody.
Learned that in the film business.
You were talking to me exclusively for my book.
Exclusive? I thought we were talking about your father.
I thought we were both talking about your father, whom I knew extremely well.
Whose script you begged to direct.
I wish I hadn't.
By Christ, I wish I hadn't! Why don't you sod off? Bitch! Get out! Spencer.
Are you OK, lad? Yeah, I'm fine.
Yeah.
When I was a kid, you told me my father was a hero.
He WAS a hero.
That's all you ever said.
Did your mother send you? I'm a grown-up now, Darcus.
I'm here and I'm asking you.
Asking me what? Why did my father leave? There was a fight.
EXCITED SHOUTING His last fight was a fix.
What? Suggie Gardener did it.
He wanted your father to fight his boy Peverell.
He wanted the money to go on Peverell.
Why? To keep Gardener's thugs out of the community.
They'd been circling for about a year and more.
It's all about drugs.
We had years and years of trouble after.
What happened with his last fight? He won his last fight.
And he should have lost.
Years of trouble.
You know where he is, don't you? He never went to Jamaica, did he? Don't try and find him, Spencer.
Spencer! Leave it alone.
Frankie! Sorry I'm late.
I had to get my knuckles rapped.
Why? Talking to the press without consulting make-up.
Listen, I found three distinct DNA profiles on the blade.
One doesn't match any of the four bodies.
Our pickaxe man? Possibly.
Have you typed this extra DNA? It's probably Afro-Caribbean.
That's all I can give you.
You give me everything I ever expect Frankieand more.
Where the hell have you been?! Any reports about Mrs Baptiste? No.
No-one's seen her.
Who's that? Philip Stein.
You know, the mummified body.
His daughter identified him late last night.
He went missing in 1969.
He seems to be a high-class drug dealer.
His daughter is Frannie Henning.
I've seen her on TV.
Yeah.
Where's Boyd? He's in the lab.
They're doing the PMs? Mmm.
Have they got anything? Yeah, they've got three DNA profiles, one of which might be the killer.
Spence! Hi.
Have you got a minute? I'm writing this report on the meeting with Mrs Baptiste yesterday and I'm finding it hard to find out about stuff she was talking about.
And I wondered if you could help me? I mean, what is this Obeah.
O-beah.
O-beah.
It's a folk medicine.
Ahh.
Now when you were talking to her, you called her a name.
Oduda.
Oduda's the Obeah Queen.
And bones is the King.
Yeah.
They are what, death deities? More or less.
So, do you think Mrs Baptiste could have been put in that flat for some cult reason to do with the dead? .
.
So if we find out who put her there, we'll find out who is responsible for the murders? It doesn't tell us anything about the murders.
But if she knew there were bodies there, someone else She was there to see that the duppies didn't come back.
Duppies? Ghosts.
Three days after you die, your soul goes to God.
But your shadow remains for nine days unless Unless? Unless certain rites are not performed.
Did, um Did Frankie find anything else in the bodies or, um in the graves? Oh, yeah.
I know she did.
They had bags over their heads.
Frankie says because of the mess the murder weapon might make.
No.
No, they were blindfolded.
When they were killed? When they were buried.
To stop the duppies finding their way back.
Spence why don't you talk to Boyd? About what? I think you should suspend me from this inquiry.
Why would I do that? I'm in the way.
I'll decide that.
I'm also withdrawing my application for promotion.
Come on.
We all have to deal with the possibility of conflicts, Spence.
It's happened to me.
Sit down.
I trust you, Spence.
You're a good police officer.
I'm going to give you 48 hours' leave.
And what you do in that time is your own business.
If you happen to stumble across anything that is relevant to this investigation, I know I'll be the first to hear about it.
And you're withdrawing nothing.
Whatever we get, we deal with it.
All right? This is not good, Mrs Baptiste.
People are asking have we seen you.
Listen to Oduda.
Tings 'ave to get done.
You - go and find Oduda a cat.
No.
I'm not finding no cat.
You're not skinning no cats, Mrs Baptiste.
You want duppies cursing you for the rest of your days? We feed dem duppies.
Feed dem.
You can respect the spirits too much.
You must live in de present, Mrs Baptiste.
Cat must be black.
OK, clever dicks.
I have spent ages examining these plastic bags and they were put on the dead men's heads AFTER they were killed.
You sure? Is that a serious question? .
.
Sorry.
Why would you bag them? As far as I know, the dead can't see.
You need to talk to Spence about this, but basically, it's to confuse the victims' ghosts and prevent them finding their way back into the community.
Great.
What, these are ritual killings? No, not necessarily.
It's about bad spirits - making up for the absence of funeral rites.
We know what sort of killings they are.
They're murders.
Talk to Spence.
Leave him alone.
I've given him 48 hours' leave.
Good Lord.
Lucky Spence.
Boyd? Yeah? Gerry Raistrick was the Director of the film.
I want to talk to writer John Right.
Mrs Baptiste is our only witness.
The police are looking for her.
I just need to deal with this.
Come on in! I'm coming! These murders were not ritual murders, they were brutal angry murders, as was the murder of Philip Stein which we think happened on another occasion, by somebody different.
So one fight resulted in death as in the movie, and two executions.
Mrs Baptiste a serial killer, then? Not in my book.
Is she a witness? Well, she knew what was happening.
I know, but will she be any use in a court of law? No Oh, Mel! You know you said you wanted to speak to John Wright? Well, I've just found out it's a pseudonym for Phillip Stein.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
That's why the execution wasn't in the film.
So the writer gets the rough of the deal and the director gets away with it.
And now lives in Finchley.
That's a contradiction in terms.
What is? Living in Finchley.
You CAN live north of the river.
No, you can exist.
So I exist? Boyd, I hadn't finished.
I know, you're just doing everything while Spencer's away.
It's temporary, OK? No, it's not that.
You wanted me to check out Quinn, OK? She entered the country as Patricia Quinn, but her real name is Gina Sciafra.
Sciafra? She in the Mafia? Well Check her out when we get back.
Mum Mum We need to talk.
It's OK, I'm off duty.
Tickets, please.
Thank you.
Mum, you have to talk to me.
I don't have to tell you nothing! Listen to me! You listen to me.
I can't! Don't raise your voice to me! I'm sorry.
Four bodies have been found in Marlow House.
How can I not ask? Mrs Baptiste was put there for a reason, wasn't she? Who put her there? Was it my father? You don't talk about your father with disrespect.
I've said nothing about my father with disrespect! Do you still get letters? My business.
I've not seen my father since I was six years old! You always told me he was coming back.
Mum .
.
I have to know.
Is he dead? Dead? We've never heard from him.
No.
He's not dead.
How do you know? Spencer, he's not dead.
Did he run away from what happened at Marlow House? Nothing's ever changed, has it? You don't understand, Mum.
I do this all the time.
Open things up that have happened so long ago, people think they have gone forever, but they haven't.
Your father stood up for his community.
He did his best to protect people.
So why did he leave us? You've never explained to me why he left.
Bad men wanted him dead.
Why? He never said.
He said to me, "Ann, it's best if I go now.
" You need to know something.
Tell him .
.
he's not safe any more.
Oh, Spencer.
She didn't waste much time.
Someone could have leaked it.
Yeah.
Her PR.
She knew more than she let on.
What's it say? She's been writing a book.
Everybody needs to write books don't they? Bloody sun! It's the light! This came for you.
Get out of here.
Get me Geddes! NOW! Hello? Mr Raistrick! Mr Raistrick! Ohhit stinks.
I'm glad I'm not stopping for dinner.
Mr Raistrick! Amazing place.
One of his, do you think? My God.
He's not a health freak, is he? Mel? Mm-hm? Projection.
Any good with these? It was before my time.
Way before.
Before MINE.
Eroff.
What do you think this is? "Remember who has the final cut.
" Frankie's going to love this.
'Don't bother running, Raistrick.
You're a dead man.
' Yes, it fits.
Well, the DNA will confirm it.
Stein got it cut off for poking it where he shouldn't.
And they sent it to Raistrick as a warning.
And he didn't make any more movies.
We need to find Raistrick, Mel.
Don't worry.
I'll find everyone.
You know what this team needs? What? A constable.
Right, I'll need to look for DNA on the note and check the paper and ink.
Can any one of you do me a vehicle check? SHE SCREAMS Say it again.
It won't seem any more rational the second time.
Well, just try it.
.
.
I'm a detective.
I try to understand pictures like these.
But it's impossible to understand a picture when you're inside the frame - that's a quote.
Peter Boyd.
That's him.
What do you mean, "Inside the frame"? The film, Grace.
We were sent the film anonymously, yeah? Yes.
Someone knew all about the history of Marlow House Got it! Patricia Quinn, real name is Gina Sciafra.
FBI Organised Crime Intelligence have a lot on Ms Sciafra.
She is Mafia? She's connected to the Aquilino family.
Over here for the weather?! She's believed to be into drug trafficking, but the Feds haven't been able to make anything stick.
Mafia launder money through ticket sales, don't they? Yeah.
So Quinn could be using Toni Dean as a front to buy the house.
Why? Are you sure we're not trying to star in our own film here? I'm sure.
We're inside the frame.
We've been given parts in all this before we knew anything about it.
Central London CID have just found Raistrick.
CID have just confirmed this as Raistrick's.
God, it's nice! Beautiful.
It's Philip Stein's old car.
What? Philip Stein's.
Oh, right.
- Frankie, I need - I can't tell you that until I get him out.
- And if the world was about to end? - He killed himself just in time! Do you remember me? Of course I remember you, Spencer.
I need to ask you something.
There is nothing I can say that can help.
Why does my mother pay you all this money every month of the year? KNOCK AT DOOR HE WHISTLES Oh, wait there! I'll come out.
You're going to love this.
Yeah? - The original owner of Gerry Raistrick's car was a drug smuggler.
- Right.
So, looking for hiding places, I had the petrol tank filled and drained.
- Gordon-Keebles had two 11-gallon tanks.
- A real gas guzzler.
Yeah! This one had been re-fitted with a single 20-gallon tank that only holds ten.
Frankie.
The Howard Carter moment.
The what? Howard Carter - who opened Tutankhamun's tomb.
Didn't he die of a mummy's curse? Don't we all? Don't you get on with your mum? I do.
ALL: Wow! Ten grand! How do you know? Now, that would have been an awful lot in 1969.
And? It's a standard reel-to-reel.
It should still play.
'Trust me.
Nothing's going to happen.
You'll be safe.
'It's all very well, Peverell, but it won't be you doing time if I'm caught.
Think it through, Stein.
'It's not in my interest for you to be nicked.
Prove it.
'I've got people on the inside who will help.
Inside the police? No, St John's Ambulance Service(!) 'That doesn't come cheap, Vinnie.
'You've no idea what cops can cost these days.
Top brass? Oh, yes.
Chief Superintendent Hanworth, 'Superintendent Bickerham, Superintendent James' You took your time, Geddes.
Well? He's a bit of a wild boy.
That's why they put him in charge of this unit.
Boyd.
You never said he was a friend of yours.
You should have told me.
I didn't say he was a friend.
I tried to employ him once but he didn't have a gambling problem unlike some of us.
You've read this.
Anything we can use? Something disciplinary? Nothing we could use.
Nothing? Boy hero.
I'll go on looking into this.
You do that.
If there's a problem, I'll make a call, eh? Boyd, who is Peverell? Vincent Peverell - one of Suggie Gardener's East End firm.
He took over the business.
Serious player.
Stein must have had a death wish.
Sit and have a cup of tea.
OK.
So, how do you know about him? He offered me a lot of money once to work for him.
You're joking?! No.
I was interviewing him for intimidation.
He'd scams everywhere.
He offered me 10,000 a year on top of my police salary, in cash.
Good Lord! I wondered why you managed to dress so well.
Thank you.
So did you arrest him? I did my best, but the division didn't think we had enough.
Attempting to bribe a police officer? Well, off the record You see, I always thought that Vincent Peverell was paying off at least one senior officer in the Met.
But there are five here.
Five! Must be in their 80s if they're still alive.
You must have a reason for thinking you're in the frame on this.
If Quinn is trying to set up Peverell, she must be aware that he has influence in the Met.
As they would then bury any investigation on him? Exactly.
She needs a police officer who is not in Peverell's pay to do her dirty work.
Where you come in? Yeah.
But how does Quinn know about the murders in Marlow House? I don't know.
Maybe Projection is her favourite film.
So the gangster goes to see a gangster movie to get information about a rival gangster? Yeah Why don't you write a paper on it, Grace, when youretire? Lemon.
I hate .
.
Mel, get me NCIS.
OK.
But, but, but .
.
What? Raistrick drove Stein's car for 30 years?! The information was in his petrol tank.
That's irony! It is.
That's what they say Americans don't have, isn't it? Yes.
Yeah.
.
.
Mel! Get me Gerry Raistrick's wallet, will you? Sure.
Thank you.
Can I help you? Oh, I'm Ray Geddes, from NCIS.
I'm here to see Boyd.
Oh, right Well, I'll see if he's busy.
KNOCK AT DOOR - Yeah.
- Boyd, there's a guy from NCIS Send him in.
Hi.
Ray Geddes, NCIS.
You asked for Vinnie Peverell.
Yeah.
If you're close to something on him, you'll be popular.
I've spent years collating him.
Take a seat.
Thank you.
Peverell's been untouchable for too long.
Do we know why? I think we both know why.
Peverell has mountains of drug cash.
It's all very well stopping somebody laundering their money, but it gives them more incentive to use it to buy police officers.
Unlaundered cash, it's untraceable.
Maybe his day has come.
Strictly speaking, you should give NCIS a precis of your case but I wouldn't recommend that.
Why not? Maybe he's bought somebody in NCIS.
Is that why you hand-delivered these files? Indeed.
That's very conscientious.
Perhaps you could help me with something else before you go? Try me.
Peverell had a drug distribution business.
No-one's ever caught him cold on it.
But yes.
Extensive.
All cash.
He buys from Americans? Buys from.
Sells to.
The drugs trade moves east AND west He is in business with the Aquilino family from Miami.
So we believe.
Yeah.
They want him out.
You know that? It's an intelligent guess.
They want him out to deal direct.
Think what it's worth! with International Organised Crime.
Peverell's on the UK index.
OK.
Go ahead.
If, uh, if you have anything solid on this, we'd be anxious to see it.
Like I said, it's just a guess.
Well, if that were to change You'd be the first to know.
Bye.
Grace.
Mmm? Files on Vincent Peverell.
There's six psychological assessment reports amongst them.
Oh, great(!) Six DIFFERENT professional opinions.
Yeah.
Enjoy! I've got the stuff.
Come on in.
OK Frankie's going to kill us.
Don't tell her.
"Contents of Raistrick's wallet.
" Yeah, there we are.
American Film Company.
I bet Quinn's connected to that.
Maybe she heard rumours and decided to track Raistrick down.
The old boy wants to go back to work and decides it's safe enough to tell his stories.
And tells Quinn enough to confirm he has stuff on Peverell.
His last call was to Frannie Henning.
When? Today at 3pm.
And then he killed himself.
Yeah.
DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES Boyd, Frannie Henning was recording a chat show.
She left the studio about half an hour ago.
Come on.
'We're all familiar with Frannie Henning - TV presenter, journalist 'and novelist - whose name recently shot to the headlines with the news 'that her father's body was found 'Frannie, I know this must be distressing for you to talk about, 'but I noticed that it's similar to the plot in your latest novel.
Is that a coincidence? 'It's a complete coincidence' This is the one, isn't it? Yeah.
The door's open.
I hope she hasn't been burgled.
.
.
Hello! Oh, no.
Miss Henning.
Miss Henning.
INTERVIEW CONTINUES ON TELEVISION Mel! Oh, Jesus! It's Spencer.
I know.
Does Mum come here? Yes.
Yes, she comes.
Why was I never told? Hmm? It wasn't safe, Spencer.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, man, but we couldn't tell you.
We just couldn't tell you.
ANSWERING MACHINE: 'Frannie, it's me.
I'm so sorry.
I don't know what to say Yes, I do.
'For God's sake, get a long way away from all this and forget we ever spoke.
Promise me, Frannie.
'These people are still dangerous.
That's all.
' Quinn's staying at the Langham Hotel.
She's booked a car to the airport.
She's on the Miami flight.
She was going to swan out of here having used us to deal with Vincent Peverell I don't think so.
FOOTSTEPS APPROACH Guys, wait there.
I'll be with you in a minute.
Who are all these men? Close protection teams.
Who for? For us, Grace.
Us? Didn't you hear? I've been in with Frankie.
We've Frannie Henning's been murdered.
She lied about her father.
She and Raistrick had got together.
He's been waiting for an hour.
OK.
Come on.
I'll show you something.
OK.
Spence.
How are you doing? All right? OK.
Pull up a chair.
I found this photograph of Suggie Gardener in Peverell's file.
He's supposed to have disappeared in 1970 and was thought to have been buried in the Westway flyover.
This is a facial reconstruction of that skeleton there.
Wow.
We think it's possible that Peverell had him buried in the wall at Marlow House, so hello, Suggie Gardener.
My father was trying to protect his community against the East End firms who were moving in on the drugs trade.
Suggie Gardener had set up a deal for him to fight Vinnie Peverell and take a dive.
What was the deal? That Suggie would leave the community alone.
But my father found out that that would never happen, so he chose to follow his own path.
And he beat Peverell to a pulp.
He beat him in the ring.
And then Peverell sent a team to sort him out at Marlow House? My father defended himself.
Buried the bodies and left Camelia in charge of the house.
What happened to your father? He was treated in hospital.
My mother was a nurse.
She invented a name for him.
He could never come home.
I'm really proud of you, Spence.
I am.
About what you've done.
But we need to see him.
This is my mother and father.
Mr and Mrs Jordan, it's a pleasure to meet you.
Sir, do you mind if I, um, if I sit down? No, please.
Thank you.
I'll get straight to the point, Mr Jordan.
You were attacked by Vincent Peverell in 1969? Yes, that's right.
Did he personally take part in the attack on you? Did he attack you himself? He was too scared.
He sent people.
How do you know he was involved? If you were injured by the men who came to attack you at Marlow House, who was it who defended you and then buried the bodies under the floor? I understand that you want to protect the person who saved your life, but it is really important that you tell us everything you know.
We can put Peverell away for good.
Mrs Baptiste Spence, come on! He knows what's going on.
Yeah, OK.
You do know that your son's career is not at stake here, Mr Jordan? He's doing fine.
But Vincent Peverell is still free and while he is free, other people's lives are at risk.
It was me.
I lived in the house too.
I heard the noise.
And you've looked after him all these years? I've always looked after him.
I was his corner man.
We worked out a story.
I said that Carlton had died after the fight, and that he had killed two men who came after him.
And you told Peverell that you'd buried them all? I said that we didn't want any policemen near us.
He liked that.
He said I was good at getting rid of bodies.
He came back to tell you to get rid of Philip Stein and Suggie Gardener? I got away after that.
Peverell got to know that I went to Jamaica.
What about you, Mrs Jordan? Why didn't you leave? So long as I lived alone, Carlton was safe.
If I come to live here, who knows what could have happened? Peverell keeps his hooks on the estate even after this time.
I'll give you immunity, if you give me evidence.
I never thought it would be so long.
Carlton should have finished it in the ring.
I won't be used in a scam between crooks! Now Quinn's expecting a car to take her to the airport.
I've arranged transport and back-up, so we'll hit the ground running.
Yeah, and you do know what that crazy bitch has called me and said? She's going back to America and backing out of the deal on Marlow House! Bollocks! .
.
No, it's the light.
I can't get it on.
I'll sue the arse off her, Joey.
I've got a contract, a signed bloody contract! Hang on, I've got a torch here.
.
.
So who called me to say they'd meet me here, then? You said that somebody had called and said they'd meet me here on site and sort it all out Hang on.
There's somebody here.
I'll call you back.
.
.
Hello? Hello! Who's there? Who the hell are you? You know what? I'm different, I am.
I've never believed in property.
I think it's shit.
Yeah, well, this is my property and you are trespassing! This house will be yours forever if you don't shut up! I never knew When did you start moving up in the world? You should have stuck to winkling.
Putting the frighteners on poor old tenants.
That's your line.
I don't know what you're talking about.
So, this American scumbag comes to you and says, "I've got a nice little earner for you.
" It was a property deal.
Shut up! God! This place should have been condemned a long time ago.
Maybe it's still not too late.
They're backing out, my clients.
Of course she's backing out! They've done what they've come to do.
And now they are backing out.
Question is, where did she get her information from? What information? This hasn't been about property.
This has been about ME! I don't know what you mean.
Really? All the team are on our secure net.
BEEPING How does this damn thing work? It's that one.
Right.
She's coming.
Here she is.
Which terminal, madam? Four.
First class.
OK.
OK, let's do it.
This is Fox.
I'll be empty in about 20.
You've got Peverell behind you, and we're behind you.
Roger, roger.
Warm enough, ma'am? Yeah.
Very good.
They've turned off the motorway.
Where are we going? The motorway ahead is blocked.
Don't worry, I know another route.
Where the hell are we? Answer me.
Don't wait.
Go, go, go.
Get me out the car.
Let me outta here.
What are you doing? You set me up, you bastard! You set me up.
Let me out! What the fuck are we doing here? Maybe she wants to talk.
Suits me.
Let me out of the car.
Let me out! Let me out, you bastard! Get me out! Vincent Peverell, put the gun down.
- Hello, Boyd.
- I thought you might remember me.
- How could I forget.
- You gonna arrest me? - No, I'm not.
Glad to hear it.
Come for that American scumbag, have you? No.
The FBI want to talk to her.
Very good, Boyd.
So, um, can we all go home now? Not quite.
Why? You ain't arresting me? No.
He is.
Vincent Peverell, I'm arresting you for conspiring to murder Carlton Jordan in 1969.
You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not disclose anything you may later rely on in your defence.
We'll also be questioning you about the murders of Philip Stein, Suggie Gardener and Francis Henning.
Miss Sciafra, I'm afraid your flight's been delayed.
Indefinitely.
