20.0 Megaquake (2022) Movie Script
[dramatic music playing]
[dramatic music continues]
Mom, we're gonna miss
the start of the science fair!
[woman sighs]
I know.
I know. I know.
I know. I know. I know.
We'll go in a second.
I just--I can't find my keys.
[sighs]
- [rumbling]
- BOY: What?
[rumbling]
Mom!
Stevie, under the table now.
[rumbling continues]
Go! Go, go, go!
Run! Run!
[dramatic music playing]
Reports are coming in
of a major incident
- north of Malibu...
- ...coined this
as a category-6 earthquake,
are expected to be...
All hands.
All hands, backup now!
[groans]
MOLLY: Can this thing
go any faster?
GRIFFIN: The computers estimated
28 hours before the quake.
We'll be in California
before then. Just relax.
[sighs]
[cabin light pings]
Could really get used to this.
Is that why you buddied up
to Griffin Richards,
so you don't have
to fly coach anymore?
What? I'm not allowed
to enjoy a little relaxation?
Am I gonna be
one of your targets now?
This jet is solar powered,
after all.
Come on, David. You're the one
that brought him into this.
DAVID: Yeah, and look at all
the good it's already done.
I mean, all the people
we saved back in Hawaii.
Your benefactor has made
a career out of ruining mine.
All right,
so look at it this way.
Our biggest detractor
is now on our side.
If we can convince public
enemy number one to join us,
- then there's hope yet.
- [scoffs]
Okay, I didn't know
that he was illegally
drilling into volcanoes,
but who would have
thought of that?
I have spent half my career
suing assholes like him
because of the sneaky things
that they do.
The technology
that we're using right now
is generations
ahead of its time...
doing good, fixing the world,
and all because of that man.
Him? Oh, come on.
It's because
of people like Yolanda,
Sven, my kids,
and even my husband.
All he did was write a check,
and we had to clean up
his P.R. mess.
So you're either
gonna fix this, or I will.
Bad news. There's been
a landslide in Ventura County.
- What?
- Multiple reports
have seven dead,
45 missing, 13 homes lost.
PCH is closed
in both directions.
Luckily, there's no signs
of a tsunami.
Does it say what caused it?
Looks like it was sudden.
USGS has a 4.3
centered in Emeryville
Does it say exactly
where it was located?
Unincorporated community
near Malibu,
about 45 miles
west of Los Angeles.
I think I know where that is.
We land in 20, F.Y.I.
Copy.
Chrissy and Clay and Eric
should be on the ground by now.
I'll let them know
where we're headed.
Okay, tell them,
but I don't want them
to change anything
of what they're doing.
You know, Eric wanted to have
a nice, quiet weekend
with the kids.
It's--It's a therapy thing.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah.
Can you wake up Sven?
[clears throat]
We land already?
No. Listen, when we land,
I want to go straight
to the disaster site.
I want an exact location.
- On it.
- What happened?
There was a massive landslide
in Ventura County,
but we're gonna work
with the local authorities
to help them
with search and rescue,
recovery, first aid,
whatever they need help on.
I also want to get soil samples
of the landslide debris.
I'll get the trauma kits ready.
Thank you.
Yolanda, if you
could please call USGS.
I want to know
if they were monitoring
a landslide when it failed.
I also want their data
on the 4.2 earthquake.
On it.
[dramatic music playing]
[emergency chatter]
We got a couple--
cutting out your staff.
Uh, need to extricate--
We got a couple in a Chevrolet
over there we need to extricate.
Uh, can you get some water?
Because I think they're
gonna be there for a while.
I'll see if anyone
needs any help.
I'll go with you.
I gotta call in the second rig.
This is the same place,
isn't it,
where Clay and Chrissy
were trapped
in that landslide back in 2010.
Yeah.
Yeah, if you just step this way,
we can get you treated
over at the triage station.
[emergency dispatch chatter]
Step back! Step back!
Is it possible
for a 4.2 in Camarillo,
20 miles away, reactivate
a 12-year-old landslide?
No. A shallow quake
in this region wouldn't disturb
previously failed material
from that long ago.
See, that's not
what I'm understanding. I--
A shallow quake
wouldn't do this.
How deep was this?
Maybe the ground saturated
and the two
aren't connected at all?
No, I need to check
the national weather readings.
Ah, it shows...
no measurable rainfall
in the area.
I-I'm not seeing any mud
or slurry conditions.
RESPONDER:
Let's get this road clear.
We need to get some samples.
Yeah.
RESPONDER: Come on. Move it.
This road is now closed.
Let's move, people.
We don't have much time.
Stabilizing water pressure.
Check.
RESPONDER: Come on. Let's go.
Okay, stay calm.
We got you. We got you.
Okay, stay calm. We got you.
Wait, Dad, is--
is this the place
where the landslide...
Why would you bring us...
- I didn't realize.
- Dad.
- Yeah, he's right.
- I can't be here.
CHRISSY: This is the place.
We gotta go.
We gotta get Clay out of here.
Come on. Let's just go.
Eric.
Molly.
What are you doing up here?
Did you know that this
was the same place as last time,
where Clay and Chrissy almost...
Yes.
I gotta get them out of here.
Dad, we gotta go.
Clay, you okay?
I can't--I can't breathe.
Okay, just long,
slow breaths for me, okay?
- Clay.
- [ragged breathing]
- Breathe. Breathe.
- Take one of these.
Chrissy, get him to take that.
- I--
- Put it in your mouth.
- Take this, okay?
- Put it in your mouth.
Just put it--Open up. Here.
[gags]
- It's so sour.
- It's malic acid.
Malic acid. Warheads.
- Sour candy.
- What does that do?
You feel that?
- [steadier breathing]
- That's it. It's--
The sour taste in your mouth,
it distracts us
from--from the symptoms.
My therapist put me onto it.
I-It breaks up the stress.
How are you feeling?
- I think it's working.
- Yeah.
All right. Okay, look.
Guys, I think I'm--
I'm calling it, all right?
We're getting out of here.
Molly, Clay needs a minute.
We'll meet you back
at the Command Center.
Please, somebody help me.
I need to find my son!
Stevie! Please!
Please, somebody.
- Please just help me.
- Ma'am, it's okay.
- How can I help you?
- My son.
I need you
to help me find my son.
Okay, what does he look like?
If anybody can find him,
my team can.
He's--He's 4'11",
and he's, um, got green eyes.
- His name is Stevie.
- Stevie, okay.
Stevie. Please, please,
please, please.
Sven! Yolanda!
Her son is missing.
His name is Stevie.
He's about 4'11", green eyes.
- I saw her kid. Okay.
- Stevie. Stevie.
- Look--
- Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
- No, it's okay.
- Thank you so much.
It's gonna be okay.
- Mom?
- Is that your mom?
- They found him.
- Mom!
- Stevie! Oh, Stevie! Stevie!
- Mom!
Stevie. Oh! Oh, my--
- Mom.
- Are you okay? [crying]
- Are you okay?
- I'm good.
- Okay. Come on. Let's go.
- Come on.
- One of my old professors...
- I'll call you back.
over at CalTech
is now here at USGS Moffett.
He sent over
some seismographic data
leading up
to the landslide in Ventura.
Let's see what they got.
The only activity
within the last 24 hours
is around Ventura and
north of Santa Barbara.
But the strongest was a 4.2,
and that usually
doesn't get much attention.
And I get that this is, uh,
centralized to the faults,
but it's also FEMA headquarters,
just so you know.
Yeah, that's gotta
make you nervous, huh?
GRIFFIN: It's a valid concern.
Okay, so this 4.2, it was
located in Ventura, right?
GRIFFIN: Maybe we should
relocate to Ventura County.
YOLANDA: It was preceded
by two foreshocks
within a 15-mile radius of
the epicenter, three days apart.
- Magnitude?
- Micro.
1.4 and a .8.
The last one happened
36 hours ahead of the 4.2.
GRIFFIN: Is anybody
listening to me?
The others were shallow,
easily detectable.
The 4.2, no, that was deeper.
The data was sent
by a research team
conducting
oil-field-based studies
somewhere near Seal Beach
in Orange County.
GRIFFIN: Hey!
Look, I know my company
has done
some pretty crappy stuff,
but all these pretty things
you're playing with right now,
I pay for it.
So are we still a team or not?
- DAVID: Yeah.
- Great.
Of course.
We're just a little busy.
This earthquake, it penetrated
deeper than 15 miles?
[scoffs] Try 18.
What?! 18 miles?
I mean, that's deep enough
to penetrate the upper mantle.
Mm-hmm.
Seal Beach is adjacent
to the Elsinore Fault.
That's a lateral strike
slip fault.
Yeah, it turns out that wasn't
the first time, either.
The oil-field study
had data from a 2.3 and a 2.7
both taking place
four weeks apart.
The seismographic sensors
didn't pick up on that, either.
2.3 to 4.2 earthquake,
all happening within a month,
deep enough to penetrate
the upper mantle.
I mean, I know
the San Fernando Valley
is 40 miles away from Ventura,
and they're both on
the Ventura-Petis Point Fault.
Yeah. A deep quake
of that magnitude
could produce
enough energy to trigger
significantly larger and
more damaging surface quakes.
Oh, my God.
And a landslide
on the same slope
that failed 12 years ago.
This is not good, Yolanda.
That's bad news.
CHRISSY:
Are you sure you're ready?
CLAY: Yeah.
Let's get back to work.
MOLLY: So look...
the 4-Sight...
Protocol system.
With this, we can build
the most advanced
seismic warning system
we have ever seen.
And we can tell people
not just when this
is gonna happen, but where.
We'll be able
to give them not just seconds,
but hours to react,
maybe even days.
Is something like this
even possible?
Nobody's been able to come up
with something
this comprehensive.
Well, how wide-ranging
and comprehensive
do you expect
this detection system to be?
As our technologies have gotten
smarter over the past 15 years,
so have the data
that they can produce.
They can provide us with
some of the most accurate data
for the purposes of earthquake
detection and prediction.
It would fill in a blind spot
that has limited
those abilities for years.
But, Mom, you realize
the level of state and federal
regulatory compliance
that we'd be up against, right?
But that's just it.
The same companies that are
driving up climate change
are also the ones
collecting information,
and they're sharing
that information
with academic institutions
and law enforcement,
so why aren't we privy
to that same information?
We could save millions of lives.
Exactly. We're not
interested in who, only when.
I think that might be a steeper
climb than you're anticipating.
[rumbling]
Everybody, take cover!
- [grunting]
- Down! Get down!
[screaming]
[rumbling subsides]
Everyone okay?
I'm all right.
You all right?
Yeah, mate.
Clay. Clay, you all right? Clay.
I'm fine. I just need a moment.
Are you sure you're okay?
I said I'm fine.
- I'm fine, Mom.
- Okay.
Just need a minute.
Okay. Okay.
[sighs]
Whew.
Not getting reception.
Cell tower's down?
No, it's jammed
with everybody else
- trying to do the same thing.
- Okay.
NATASHA: And that
outlines the FEMA response.
Oh, look who it is.
Next, I would like
to bring up
Senator Terry Carlson of
the great state of California.
He serves as the chair
of the Senate Committee
of Homeland Security.
Senator?
Thank you, Natasha.
Homeland Security
provides assistance to FEMA
and other vital organizations.
At this time,
our team is on standby,
ready to assist
should there be a need.
As you heard earlier, this was
a 5.4-magnitude earthquake
located 15 miles
southeast of Los Angeles
on the newly discovered
Hollywood Fault Line.
REPORTER: Senator Carlson,
we're getting reports--
And today, we're not going
to be taking any questions.
- Senator Carlson!
- Over here! Over here!
Please, just shut that off.
Shut that thing off.
Good afternoon.
This is the FEMA hotline.
How may I address
your call, sir?
Uh-huh.
Yep. It's a political maneuver,
But if they strip FEMA
provisions out of the budget,
that's how we get guys like
Griffin Richards and his team
showing up to major crises.
Yeah.
Uh-huh.
Copy.
[sighs]
Are you kidding me right now?
[scoffs]
Jeff, Griffin Richards here.
Heh. I'm great. Thank you.
Listen, uh, you got a minute,
or am I keeping you
from getting on
another rocket into orbit?
Wh-What can I say?
You've been to space.
But don't you worry.
I'm--I'm on my way, too.
He's doing it again.
Listen, I need your input
on something I'm working here.
I'm pretty sure
you felt that earthquake
down in Malibu, right?
Right. Well,
what if there was a way
to start predicting
these things before they happen?
I know. I know nobody else has
been able to do it until now,
and I want you in on it.
That's right. It's something
I've been working on myself.
You've got to control him.
He's helping.
We're gonna head to Hollywood,
see if anyone needs a hand.
Okay. Keep in contact.
Back in a bit.
DAVID: All right. See you, guys.
So I've got meetings
in both Pasadena and Culver City
with two of the biggest
tech companies that ever lived.
They're gonna make
your earthquake software
more powerful.
Well, then I'm coming with you.
Absolutely not.
Because it took you
so long to convince me.
And I'm not sure
your position has even changed.
Really? What do
you think this is?
A P.R. move.
Molly, I left
my company for this.
No, I-I think you quit
so that you wouldn't
get in trouble for drilling
off the coast of Hawaii,
so that you
wouldn't have to take
responsibility for all that.
Look, I'm not
going anywhere, okay,
because I have a stake in this.
- Which is?
- [sighs]
You remember Hurricane Florence?
Well, I grew up in Wilmington.
My parents still live there.
When it hit,
ArcStar pledged 250 million.
Me, myself, I doubled it,
and that was after
the damage was already done.
Now we can fix things
before it happens.
So maybe
my environmental impact report
that you challenged in court
wasn't written by a--
Wait, what was it you called me
in your deposition?
Um, that's right.
An unhinged radical eco-maniac.
Little word of advice?
Don't hold a grudge.
Good. The gang is all here.
Natasha.
What are you doing here?
What am I doing here?
You are parked
under the FEMA building.
Well, in case you didn't notice,
there was an earthquake.
Our research brought us here.
And actually, I'm--
I'm kind of glad to see you,
because our evidence
is showing that we are nearing
a real-life Big One scenario
in Southern California.
So we need to start
planning evacuations,
search and rescue,
gathering supplies.
The credible agencies
tracking seismic activity
haven't said one word about
any danger of a massive quake.
Your team got lucky in Hawaii.
But if I sense even
a whiff of impropriety here,
you're all doing federal time.
Natasha, look,
our tech is just as good
as theirs, if not better.
We can mitigate
any natural disasters
caused by climate change.
Prevention when possible.
Rescue and recovery when we can.
Specializing
in natural disasters
caused by
your billionaire founder.
What we did in Hawaii
was a success,
despite your attempts
to stop it.
You want to see
the letters thanking us?
[chuckles]
It's always a pleasure, Natasha.
Excuse me.
I have to go to a meeting.
Excuse me.
CHRISSY: You know what, Natasha?
All you care about
is making the rich richer.
You do not care about
the people on this planet.
If you did,
you would not be here
questioning my mom
for a second time.
[cellphone buzzing]
Hello. Senator Carlson.
Mm-hmm.
Did you mean
what you said to Natasha,
that the Big One's on its way?
Well, not just the Big One.
I'm talking about an earthquake
that could trigger
dozens of fault lines.
Thousands dead,
tens of thousands
missing or injured,
aftershocks of 6.3 or higher,
that could go on
for years or longer.
But your 4-Sight Protocol,
y-you're saying
that this could end all of it?
4-Sight could save
countless lives.
I mean, if we could just get
everyone onboard to participate,
even billionaire
climate deniers.
I just wish you could see me
as an ally moving forward.
After all your years
of climate denying, Griffin?
[both chuckle]
Let's not
get ahead of ourselves.
Let me prove myself to you
in these meetings.
Okay. It's a long road ahead,
and there are zero shortcuts.
Are you sure you're up for this?
Oh, yeah.
Just got a lot of work
to do, that's all.
[sirens blaring]
Molly, we're in Hollywood.
Electricity's out.
There's some power lines down
with the quake,
but that's
about the extent of it.
They're veering us
through a detour at the moment
out of the area. How's Clay?
He's with Yolanda and Chrissy,
executing program threads
on the 4-Sight O.S.
Have you
checked on him, Molly?
Look, I know
what PTSD looks like,
and he's still struggling
with Ventura.
I managed to get a little bit
out of him, but you know Clay.
He's not one to go sharing
his problems with us.
I know that Clay is struggling.
I've tried to get him
to open up,
but he just--
he won't talk to me.
If he's opening up to you,
then--then that's great.
Well, it's three sentences
instead of the usual one.
That sounds like Clay.
Look, when you're back,
l-let's sit down
and talk about this.
- [rumbling]
- [tires squeal]
Uh, Molly, we better go.
[sirens approaching]
- [all grunting]
- Come on.
Come on! Come on!
We got you, mate. We got you.
Okay, up. Okay, up.
Hey, Clay.
Could I talk to you
for a minute?
Listen...
I just wanted to say
that I'm sorry
for what happened this morning.
I-I would never intentionally
put you and your sister
through that again.
And I just--I know
that when I'm worried
or I have something going on,
it always helps me
to just face it head-on.
A-And maybe you're not
there yet, and that's okay.
But when you are,
I just--I want you to know
that I'm here for you.
Okay? I-I'm always here for you.
Okay. Sure.
Can I get back to it now?
Yeah, sweetheart. Yes.
[sirens blaring]
ERIC: Okay, fella.
That's it. Right there.
That's good.
Slow, deep breaths, okay?
That's it.
Slow it down. Good.
Okay, grab him some water,
will you, mate?
Thanks for getting me out.
It isn't the first time
we've had an incident like this.
Quade Oil.
[inhales, coughs]
They've been drilling
over in Seal Beach
about 40 miles from here.
Ever since
they've been over there,
we've had bad air quality,
small quakes,
and sinkholes keep happening,
all because of the fracking.
I thought they banned
fracking in Los Angeles.
Seal Beach is in Orange County.
[coughs]
Locals have got this covered.
We should get back to HQ.
All right,
you gonna be okay here?
- I'm gonna be okay.
- Okay, take it easy, all right?
- Thanks.
- All right.
Hang in there, mate.
GRIFFIN: I convinced
both tech companies to give us
a limited three-month
data-sharing agreement.
Three months
is good enough for now.
So let's get those
last remaining data sources
into 4-Sight
and bring it fully online.
Yeah, yeah. Onto it.
Hey, Griffin.
Yeah?
I just want you
to know you did good.
Well, you've been
right about all of this.
I should have paid attention
then, but I'm listening now.
Thank you.
Ah. Looks like you
got the 4-Sight Protocol
up and running.
Almost at full capacity.
Griffin just secured
the last piece that we needed.
We're running all tests.
4-Point is tracking
a possible 6.8.
Okay. I've gained access
to the shared data sources.
It'll take a minute
to initiate plug-ins
to the system
software apparatus.
What happened to you guys?
Aw, nothing. It was
just a sinkhole opened up.
Sven and I pulled
a few blokes out.
Couple of bruises, nothing much.
But, Molly, they reckon
that that sinkhole
was due to fracking
in Seal Beach.
What do you want to bet
that's what caused
the earthquake in Hollywood?
Well, that was a 5.2
at 4 1/2 mile depth,
and we know
that fracking-induced quakes
are shallower
than naturally induced ones.
And apparently that's not
the first time
it's happened, either.
Okay, we're in.
4-Sight software is
running at increased capacity.
Diagnostics are updating.
Stand by.
Uh, Clay, hold up.
I want to calibrate the software
by .8 magnitude.
Manmade sites caused by fracking
are much weaker
than natural ones.
Well, the software's updating.
That's not a 6.8.
It's an 8.3.
Well, maybe there's
another explanation.
Uh, maybe the reading is wrong.
No, 4-Sight is doing everything
we designed
and programmed it to do.
If it says it's an 8.3,
it's an 8.3.
Do you have the analytics
ready to show?
FEMA needs a head up.
Oh, r-really?
That's where your head goes,
Natasha?
After what she did
to us in Hawaii?
You gotta alert FEMA
so they can help.
Just so you know,
she stopped by.
She's not interested.
What's that supposed to mean?
Molly, when's
the quake supposed to hit?
I-I'm not sure.
I mean, right now,
it's--it's looking like a week.
Yeah. Yeah.
Okay, so the projections
have shifted.
It's--It's less than two days.
The data is--
it's just still updating.
I-It could be less.
So now what?
- What do we do?
- Okay, okay, okay.
CHRISSY: Mom.
MOLLY: Uh...
- Molly--
- Eric, please!
Just let me think!
[rumbling]
That's it.
I have an idea.
We're gonna warn people,
but we're also
gonna take action.
We're gonna create
a seismic cloak.
We don't have that kind of time.
We're gonna have to make
that kind of time.
We have
2 million lives at stake.
Wh-What's a seismic cloak?
Okay, come here.
Everybody, come here.
Earthquakes proliferate
as waves of energy,
and the majority
of their destructive forces
come from
horizontal seismic waves
that move through solid ground.
Now, if those waves
can be absorbed or reflected,
they can also be canceled out.
So check this out.
So we're gonna drill shafts,
long boreholes spaced apart
in a careful grid manner
with the uniformity of the soil
so that when the seismic wave
passes through,
it'll lose its intensity.
So when the earthquake hits,
we won't be able to stop it,
but that 8.5
will be lessened to a 5.5.
Yeah, but that's
gonna take months,
and we only have days,
and that's if we're lucky.
Then we better get lucky,
because the most
devastating earthquake
that California
has ever seen is coming.
All right,
so take a look at this.
This is all the oil wells
that are currently or formerly
using hydraulic fracturing
all throughout California.
These are all fracking sites.
- They're everywhere.
- I know.
Seeing this map is
just absolutely appalling.
David, if you could layer in
the coordinates
for the Ventura landslide
and the quakes
in Riverside and Hollywood.
All three incidents occurred
near some
of the largest concentrations
of active and plugged
drilling sites in the area.
These incidents are all
in L.A. or Ventura County.
Fracking's banned.
Wastewater disposed
from the sites on this map
cause damage for years to come.
Every one of these sites
is pumping pressurized,
wastewater underground level
next to fault lines.
This is a disaster
waiting to happen.
I mean, if we could
show a connection
between all of this,
we could shut these sites down,
I mean, at least temporarily.
We just need
to show the connection
between all three
incident sites.
I'll get the drones in the air.
Good job, Clay.
What's wrong?
Colonel, I...
I wonder...
will God ever forgive us
for our sins?
For what we've done?
God left this place
a long time ago.
I did my time in Angola.
Hollywood site scan at 100%.
Loading complete lidar data set.
Slope angle is consistent
with the advanced
structural data form.
Eastern side of the rupture
has a round surface change
of approximately 7%...
[sighs] right lateral offset.
Thanks.
MOLLY: Scanning
for more coordinates.
Seismic activity on all
Southern California faults
- keeps increasing...
- Mm-hmm.
so I built three different...
- Thanks.
- Mm-hmm.
...seismic energy models
for greater Los Angeles area
based on body P-and-S waves
as well as surface Love
and Rayleigh wave patterns.
Thank you, sweetheart.
ERIC: Your mum wants to evacuate
millions of people from
Los Angeles and other counties?
Or, I mean, under the California
Emergency Services Act,
the governor and local officials
can declare
a state of emergency,
and then the--
the Sheriff's Department
can mandate an evacuation order.
It happens.
No, but, the OES is underneath
the governor's jurisdiction.
I mean, we get
one of them to comply,
- the rest might follow along.
- Yeah.
All right.
Well, Molly and I will head off
to the L.A. County
Sheriff's Department.
Is 4-Sight at full strength?
Yeah, and it's still
projecting a magnitude 8.3.
We need to build
a seismic cloak,
but we're running out of time.
Who do I hire
to make that happen?
Every mobile drilling rig
in Southern California
capable of reaching
a depth of 4,800 meters.
Okay, so we hire
every contractor
and subcontractor
that we can find.
Yeah, we're running
revised topography
availability estimates now.
- Where is it supposed to hit?
- Sun Valley.
The faster we can
configure the grids,
the faster we can get
the rigs into position.
All right, I'll get
the rigs ready to go.
Give me 15 minutes.
Okay, uh, Molly and I
will be in the SUV. We'll be off
to the L.A. County
Sheriff's office.
Chrissy, Sven,
Yolanda, and Clay,
you guys put the data together
and get it to Cal OES.
Local and state government
will be able
to react quickest to this.
- Everyone good to go?
- Yep.
All right.
Come on, Clay.
Molly, before you go in there
with your hair on fire,
maybe take a moment to consider
how you might be perceived.
Listen, I know
that you mean well,
but I know what I'm doing.
[cellphone rings]
Hey, David.
How's it going?
Yeah, final analysis
of the grid is complete.
Uh, my estimates
have the boreholes...
at 80 square miles,
positioned at varying distances
from each other.
Hello. Am I speaking
with the CEO
of Acme Drilling and Refining?
Yeah, Griffin Richards here.
I need all of them,
as long as they can reach
the depth that we need.
Yeah? What do you mean? Yes.
Every man that you have
at triple hazard pay.
We need 138 boreholes
within the next hour.
Now, what do you mean you can't?
Make it five times hazard pay.
Ten times! I really don't care.
Just get it done.
Great. Always a pleasure
doing business with you.
Hey, how many rigs
have we secured?
Okay, we are
running out of time.
- We gotta start drilling now.
- [sighs]
YOLANDA: All right,
let's stay calm.
Let's not start a panic.
- We need to find transport...
- Excuse me. Officer Donnenfeld.
Officer Donnenfeld.
Officer Donnenfeld?
- How can I help you?
- Officer Donnenfeld.
Okay, my name
is Dr. Molly Martin.
There's a very real emergency
situation that we have.
Hi. I need to speak
to an ESM right now.
I'm George Fox, Emergency
Service Manager on duty.
May I help you?
There is going
to be an earthquake
in Sun Valley
in less than 48 hours.
I need you to order
an emergency evacuation.
There's been an earthquake?
No, no, no, it's coming.
It's a magnitude 8.3.
There was a 5.6
out in Hollywood.
No, no, no.
That was just a foreshock.
I think I would have
seen that on Quake Alert.
We have evidence
to back this up, okay?
Listen, we've built
a multifactor forecasting model
that utilizes
data-mining algorithms.
We've been working
with highly technical sensors
to gauge
electromagnetic anomalies.
No one's been able to predict
the size and location
of an earthquake.
We have built legitimate
forecasts to provide--
Look. Ample early warnings
to evacuate full populations.
Let me just stop you
right there.
We can't issue
an evacuation order
of that size for any earthquake.
We only have CDC- and
OSHA-approved measures
in place for that type of event.
No, but look. You can actually
coordinate an evacuation
away from the fault
if you get everyone
into communities
rated at an intensity
five or less.
Intensity five?
Don't you mean magnitude five?
I mean, that's how
earthquakes are measured.
No, Officer,
stop condescending
Dr. Martin, and listen.
All of the drill locations have
been sent to the rig crews.
Now all we can do is pray
that the boreholes
get drilled in time.
Pray?
I've got something
better than prayer, buddy.
Cash. And I've spent
enough of it this morning
to get the job done.
[dramatic music playing]
The only earthquake
evacuation plan that exists
is to evacuate severely damaged
areas after the incident.
Until then,
it's just duck and cover,
and hold on to your butt
'til everything stops shaking.
That's because
there's no warning system
yet in place to forecast
beyond a few seconds.
And yours does, huh?
Look, George,
all of our prequake data
for a magnitude of 8.3
and Sun Valley
is in that binder right there.
I don't have time
to go over all this.
- [scoffs]
- [sighs]
Are any other agencies
backing you up?
USGS, CEA?
California Geological Survey?
All of the info we've collected
is from the public systems
of USGS
and California Integrated
Seismic Network data.
So what--what do you
want me to do?
You don't have any verification
from any credible
scientific organization.
We have evidence.
Right there.
It would take me
a science degree
to make heads or tails of this.
Funny you should say,
because I happen to have three,
a PhD in geophysics,
a master's in climatology,
and a bachelor's
in statistical science.
So let me put it
to you this way.
There is going
to be an 8.3 earthquake
in Los Angeles County.
And that's all very dandy.
- Come on.
- God!
I can't. I can't.
CLAY: Is there
anyone else we can warn?
CHRISSY: We could try
the fire department.
SVEN: Isn't that
all the way across town?
YOLANDA: We'll take the bridge.
ERIC: Los Angeles County
aren't listening.
Sven and I served
with a couple of guys
who are now with Cal Fire
Forestry and Fire Protection.
Your two marine buddies aren't
enough to evacuate L.A. County.
[traffic honking]
SVEN: So much for the bridge
being faster.
Where are they?
Relax. They'll be here.
Molly, crew teams
have been drilling
at their assigned locations
for about six hours now.
148 drill rigs
all operating at the same time.
Hold on!
- Get down! Get down!
- Take cover!
- Get under the table!
- Get down!
- Get down, Captain!
- Under the table! Now!
- Here! Over here!
- Take cover!
[groans]
- Quick! Quick! Under the desk!
- [barks]
- COMPUTER: Warning! Warning!
- Quick! Quick! Under the desk!
[Molly groans] Thank you.
[whimpers]
You all right, kid?
You all right?
Yeah.
MOLLY: 4-Sight shows
an estimated 6.3.
- [sighs]
- Th-That's incredible.
So it worked.
Yeah, but w-we're still
getting earthquakes.
Yeah, but they're
not as bad, right,
not as deadly. That's amazing.
MOLLY: No, wait.
What?
We have a problem.
What problem?
Lower depths.
Sustained energy
along the Verdugo
and San Andreas Fault.
I see it.
So what? You're saying
there's another quake coming?
No, two fault lines
are connecting.
The power from one fault
will unleash
catastrophic seismic activity
along another fault,
and it's just gonna
keep on continuing
up the San Andreas fault and
the entire state of California.
What does that mean?
What I mean is
that with the next quake,
the state of California
is going to tear away
from the United States
and fall into the ocean.
[rumbling]
All clear! Flow back, start!
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Gene, we have to stop!
- I have my orders.
- Are you serious?!
Emergency shutdown!
Shut it down!
Let's go! Let's go!
[sirens blaring]
It's like the entire coastline
is eroding into the ocean.
MOLLY: What are the hot spots?
Checking now.
Looks like it missed
a few major centers,
like Frisco and San Diego,
but lots and lots
of coastal damage.
Hueneme was just a foreshock.
I-It's just as we feared.
C-Can somebody please
explain this to me in real time?
I mean, do we have hours?
Seconds? What?
Molly, I need
to talk to you now.
Yeah. Just give me
one second, Eric.
Molly, now.
I need to speak to you now.
- What?
- I've been trying to reach out
to the kids, anyone, Yolanda,
Sven. I can't get through.
The cell network's down.
Well, they were warning
the Department
of Emergency Management
with Yolanda and Sven.
They're probably
with the authorities right now.
And what if they're not?
Molly, we don't know
where the kids are.
I'm trying to keep them safe.
You know that.
You saw what just happened,
and another one is coming,
probably even bigger.
We don't have time to build
another seismic cloak.
All right, you go ahead
and save the world,
I'm gonna go find the kids.
GRIFFIN: Eric, wait. Wait.
I'm going to send you the number
to my chopper service.
You can't drive in this.
The roads are blocked.
- All right.
- DAVID: We're getting readings
there's an earthquake swarm
in L.A. County
along the San Andreas Fault.
I don't get it.
What am I missing here?
[screaming]
Let's go! Single file!
- Now! Now!
- Let's move!
Let's move! Let's go! Let's go!
Let's go! Let's go!
Come on! This way!
This way! Let's go!
Let's go! Let's go! Move! Move!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Single file! Single file!
Stay calm! Stay calm, everybody!
Okay, we gotta go, guys. Go.
- Okay, come on.
- Careful, guys.
Through here.
Keep going. Keep moving.
Keep moving. Keep moving!
You all right?
That's it. That's it.
Help me!
- Ma'am.
- I can't get out!
- It's jammed. Hold on.
- The door's jammed!
- I can't get out. Help me!
- It's all right.
- It's all right.
- Please!
- It's all right.
- Help me.
No, I got it! Come on!
Come on.
You gotta come with me.
Come with me. Come with me.
- My arm! My arm!
- It's all right.
It's all right.
We gotta go. We gotta go.
Come with me. You're okay.
We gotta go.
- Keep going. Keep going.
- Oh, my God. I'm hurt.
It's all right.
Clear the bridge!
Sir!
Sir, can you hear me? Sir?!
Oh, my God.
We need an ambulance over here!
Here. Hello?
We need an ambulance
over here now!
- Yolanda! Yolanda, help!
- Where do I go?
Clear the bridge!
- Chrissy.
- [grunts]
- Oh, my God.
- I think he's unconscious.
Okay. Oh, God.
Oh, he's not breathing.
I know. Come on. Come on.
- Um...
- We can't spend much time here.
We have to go help the others.
I can do this, okay?
- Just let me.
- Okay, okay.
- [grunts]
- Oh, come on.
[grunting]
Come on, Chrissy.
We don't have much time.
Come on, sir. Come on.
Chrissy.
We gotta leave him, Chrissy.
We gotta leave him.
Come on. We can't stay here.
Yolanda, I can't!
Come on. Come on.
- Come on.
- There he is.
- There he is.
- Oh, my God!
- Oh, my God!
- Sir, you're okay.
- All right?
- Where am I? What happened?
We have to get you out of here.
We have to get you
out of here, sir. Come on.
We gotta go back.
We gotta help the others.
- Okay. Sir.
- Come on.
Let's go!
Move! Move! Move! Move!
Oh, my God.
- Come on.
- Come on.
Come on. Come on.
Let's go.
- Are you okay?
- Yeah, yeah. I'm okay.
We gotta get out of here.
That bridge is coming.
We gotta go! We gotta go!
We are reporting
unprecedented...
Service is still down.
Maybe we can tap into FEMA.
I mean, they're right there,
10 feet away.
CARLSON: First of all,
my thoughts and prayers
to everyone out there affected
by this terrible tragedy.
Let's not sugarcoat this.
The Southern California
coastline
looks like a war zone.
Our primary focus
remains to save lives.
We're going to worry
about tallying
property damage later.
- Oh, oh.
- Yes? Question?
What do you make of reports
concerning a group
called REACthat is headed by ex-CEO
of ArcStar, Griffin Richards?
His team claims
they have knowledge
that a magnitude 8.3 quake
was imminent.
Excuse me. Okay?
Let me stop you right there.
Let me tell you about this
character, Griffin Richards.
This man has
been operating illegally
for years and years now.
Now he's trying to redo
his image by creating
some pseudo-environmental
company based on false data
and whatever
Griffin Richards thinks
absolves him from the damage
that he alone has created.
So you can rest assured,
once this tragic moment
in our history has passed,
we will conduct
an investigation.
And not only into Mr. Richards,
but the entire REACT team
for falsifying data
and creating panic.
[deep breath]
I promise you that.
- Senator?
- Next. Go ahead.
Will you be recommending...
We have a job to do.
Let's focus on that.
Yeah.
...and it's still talking
about drop and...
We gotta get away
from the bridge, okay?
Guys, guys, guys!
Take her. She's hurt, all right?
- Okay.
- She's hurt.
You're okay. We got you, okay?
We got you. Come on.
We need you to walk, okay?
We got you. We're not gonna
let anything bad happen, okay?
- Come on.
- It's okay.
It's okay. You need to go.
- Ava, you need to go.
- No. I don't want--
I sent all your other
classmates. You need to go.
Honey, I know you want to stay,
but you have to go.
Okay? Yes, you have to.
OLIVIA: Okay.
OLIVIA: Ava, Ava...
1, 2, 3. 1--
All right, are you injured?
Can you walk?
- My leg is broken.
- Oh.
It's broken.
Please, my school kids,
did you see them? Are they safe?
No, no, no.
But I'm sure we can find them.
- What's your name?
- Olivia.
- Olivia.
- This is Ava.
- Ava, hi.
- She didn't want
to leave my side
because I was hurt.
The others,
make sure they're okay.
Okay, okay, but we
have to get you out of here.
[screaming]
- I can't move. I can't walk.
- No, no, no.
No, no, no. You just leave me.
You have to go.
We're gonna get you
off this bridge.
[sighs] I can't get into FEMA.
Power sources
are down everywhere.
And if this keeps happening,
the San Andreas will rupture.
We'll get hit
with a 20.0 earthquake.
We need to get word out there,
even to your pal,
Senator Carlson.
We've got to get to FEMA.
I mean, they're right there.
They're 20 feet away.
Listen, don't worry
about Carlson, okay?
No one will be implicated.
I want you to stay here.
But I can talk to him.
I don't want you to make
things worse with the senator.
But I'm telling you
I know how to talk to him.
Please stay here.
Okay.
Okay. I'll stay
and monitor the earthquakes.
Thank you,
David.
[sighs] Great.
Excuse me! I'm looking
for Natasha Nakami!
- Down there.
- Thank you.
N-Natasha! Natasha!
- Molly, get out of my office.
- Natasha!
No, no. These quakes--
I don't have time
for your theories.
Hold on!
These quakes are gonna continue
moving up the coastline,
causing a 20.0 earthquake.
We have got
to evacuate the state!
Okay, we have time codes
for the quakes
that are going to happen,
and it is constantly updating.
Here. Take a look.
Look, I've got
time codes, okay?
We have already
accurately predicted
the next quakes to come.
You heard
what the senator said.
Your data is flawed.
- No, no, no.
- I'm going to have you
escorted off this floor.
These earthquakes
are penetrating
deeper than we
ever thought possible,
at least 18 miles deep,
and you know
that our data is not flawed.
Sorry for interrupting.
We got an ICS meeting in five.
I'm coming. And you're leaving.
Hold on. Natasha.
Natasha, wait.
We are looking in places
that nobody
ever even thought to look,
smart thermostats.
Once a user has put in
their temperature,
that data is logged.
And we have that data.
There is evidence
of a heat spike
up to eight degrees Celsius
three days
before an earthquake hits,
and we can have privy
to those locations.
So once people start
to put in their temperatures,
we have that.
Infrasonics.
We obtain infrasound signals
and compare them
to historical data
of earthquakes in the area.
I'm sorry. Pardon me.
Dr. Jennings Lang.
How are you conducting
the research?
We built a forecasting protocol
to combine precursors,
compare and contrast them
against each other
and previous historical data
to ascertain the size and
intensity of future quakes.
Wait, hydraulic fracturing
has played a role.
Stop. Fracking is
not the cause here.
Senator Carlson
did extensive studies
before he started
drilling in Hawaii...
- Whoa, whoa.
- and California.
Wait a minute. Senator Carlson?
Approved the drilling.
He actually
approved the drilling?
- We knew the 8.3 was coming...
- Yeah.
and we know
that dozens more on the way.
Y-You do?
You analyzed all these data sets
and identified the event?
Yeah, we tried
to go to state
and local authorities,
and they did nothing.
FEMA doesn't have
extra resources
to spend
on speculative disaster.
We're dealing with a real one.
Shocking.
Draft a risk assessment study.
Outline the areas you feel
are at the highest risk.
We'll take it under advisement
for incorporating
into our action plan.
Wait, hold on. Hold on.
Action plan? No.
Do you know
what your action plan is?
You're gonna evacuate
the entire state,
starting with Southern
California, moving up north,
but really work
on the more populated areas.
That's your action plan.
If what you're saying is true,
we don't have
a preemptive action plan
that could respond effectively.
[scoffs] Really shocking!
[Olivia gasps] Let's go.
Go, go. Go.
Come on. You okay?
- [groans]
- Okay, I got you.
- I've got you.
- [winces]
Miss Olivia!
Does it still hurt?
No, it's okay.
It's okay. I'm okay, Ava.
[rumbling]
- [screaming]
- [alarm blaring]
[screams]
- Hold on!
- Don't let me fall!
- I'm not!
- Don't let me fall!
Don't! Don't let me fall!
Come on.
- [grunting]
- [groaning]
- [screams]
- No!
Ava! Ava!
[alarms blaring]
Ava! Ava!
- Clay!
- Ava!
- Thank God!
- Chrissy!
- Chrissy, We have to find her.
- What's wrong?
She fell! She fell,
and I tried to save her!
Hold on.
You're not making any sense!
Talk to me! Stop! Are you okay?!
No, there's a little girl here.
She saw, and then she ran off!
We have to find her!
- There's a child out there?
- Yes!
We have to find her!
Chrissy, please!
Wait. No, no, no. I just
saw a bunch of little kids
with the cops, okay?
Maybe she's with them.
No! Chrissy,
we have to find her now.
The landslide.
Wh-What are you talking about?
Clay? Clay,
what are you talking about?
- No.
- Clay, talk to me.
I don't want to live
the rest of my life scared.
- Clay.
- I ran, because I was afraid,
'cause I almost died.
Clay, look, we didn't, okay?
We made it out. We're alive.
Mom made sure of that.
No, we have to find Ava.
Clay, where are you going?
That's the wrong way!
Ava!
- Are you okay?
- You can relax.
This building's
been tested up to an 8.3.
[panicked chatter]
Oh, my God.
- Oh.
- We're moving.
We're not just moving.
We're floating!
NATASHA: That last quake
must have destroyed
the foundation pillars.
We're going to tip over,
and it's not a matter
of if, but when.
MOLLY: That was
not a 5.9, David.
4-Sight Protocol must have
underestimated the forecast.
The damage from before
must have knocked out
the seismometer sensors,
the infrasonic sensors,
and our consumer data resources.
Okay, that system has been off
ever since
the Hollywood earthquake.
I mean, that 20.0 quake
might be much larger
than we predicted.
We gotta get people
out of this building right now.
Yeah. We got to start
gathering people.
We gotta work floor by floor.
I'll start with the lobby
and work to the third floor.
I'll start on the fourth and
clear the fourth and on up.
- We'll meet on the roof.
- Okay.
It's gonna be hard
to miss a floating building,
but we gotta somehow let
people know that we're alive.
[walls creaking]
[tense music playing]
We're headed toward the bridge.
We're gonna hit it.
I'm going to sweep
for more survivors.
I'll be on radio if you need me.
[coughing]
SVEN: Wait.
You all right?
Look, you've been injured, okay?
You've been injured.
Listen.
It's gonna be all right.
All right, look.
Look, stay with me.
Stay with me. Stay with me.
No. No, no, no, no.
No.
No. No, no.
No.
- Sven.
- Damn it!
Damn it!
- She's gone. She's gone.
- MAN: Over here!
Sven, listen to me.
Listen, okay.
I can't find Chrissy or Clay.
Chrissy and Clay are missing.
Everyone's missing! She's gone!
MAN: Look out! The building!
Now listen to me. Listen.
- [gasps] No.
- Okay, listen.
We have to get out of here.
Look. Look, look.
Look, that building
it's headed straight for us.
We have to get out of here now.
- Yeah.
- Come on.
- Yeah. Okay.
- Come on.
- Come on.
- Okay, okay.
MAN: Get off the bridge!
- Go! Go! Go!
- [screaming]
Go! Go! Go!
[panicked chatter]
Hello? Can anyone hear me?
Hello?
[building creaking]
Hello?
Is anyone there?
MOLLY: Hello?
Molly?
Griffin?
What are you doing here?
The Command Center's gone.
Well, what do you mean, "gone"?
Gone like it's floating
down Third Street right now.
- Oh, my God.
- And we're taking in water.
It's coming in
through the door down there.
Did--Did you see
anybody down there?
No. I thought
it was already evacuated.
No, it's not.
Come on. Follow me.
Wh-Where are we going?
We gotta start clearing floors.
- Come on.
- Where do we bring everybody?
Come on.
Is anyone here?
Sir! Sir, we're here.
We're here to help you.
- [grunts]
- Easy, easy.
- H-He's gone.
- Help me. Help me.
- He's gone.
- No, help me get this off.
- We can save him!
- He's done.
Come on, Griffin!
No! Come on.
Oh, God.
Oh, my God.
Okay, come on.
Let's keep searching.
Hopefully...
we'll find some survivors.
Okay. Let's split up.
I'll go down. You go up.
Cover more ground.
All right, I'll meet you
back here in the stairwell.
Okay.
Come on.
- [groaning]
- Oh, my God.
Come on. Over here. This way.
This is it.
Come on!
We gotta get to the roof.
The roof? [scoffs]
The whole building's
about to lean over.
We'll wait down here
until more help arrives.
If you stay here,
we're all gonna die.
[rumbling]
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Are we okay?
Okay, you're right.
All right.
We need flares and a radio.
Do you have any flares?
We got both.
It's a nice setup
you've got here.
Thank you. Thanks very much
for doing this.
Hey, I thought
when Griffin left ArcStar,
he lost all of this.
These aren't ArcStar's.
They belong to Mr. Richards.
He's a good guy. Happy to help,
especially now.
Search and rescue bird's
all fueled up.
Let's rock and roll.
All right, let's go.
[panicked chatter]
It's not opening!
That's not working!
- Open it!
- Open it!
All right, let's try
the other staircase!
Other staircase!
- Griffin?
- Hey.
You okay?
Yeah, you?
Yeah, I'm okay.
We're blocked
in both directions.
Maybe we can dig
our way out of...
GRIFFIN: I think we're stuck.
The hell, we are.
Base, this is is Louie 23.
We are approaching
the disaster site.
Okay, there's
a heli-pad on the roof,
but we're not
gonna be able to land.
We'll drop in.
Copy that, sir.
Okay.
There's stairs
all the way down,
but the location is
structurally compromised.
Probable flooding
in the lobby, okay?
This is a volatile environment.
Volatile is an understatement.
Jesus.
I've never seen
anything like this before.
GRIFFIN: I think we're stuck.
B-Be careful.
Careful! You pull it
down the wrong way,
it's gonna come crashing down
on the both of us.
Okay, just--just stop.
There's too much of it.
We can't just sit here, Griffin.
If we just pull
more of the rubble out,
we can get up.
We can climb up and over.
- [gasps]
- You want to get out of here
so bad, you don't see the danger
right in front of you.
- Oh, my God.
- Stop. Stop.
Griffin, we have no choice.
You need to pull it
from the higher end
[gasps]
[panting]
[groans]
- Is someone there?
- [moans]
Molly, is that you?
[moans]
Are you hurt?
- Natasha!
- Oh, my arm.
No, no, no. Don't get up. Stay--
- It's broken.
- It's broken?
- [winces]
- Hold on.
Don't move. Don't move.
Okay, just...
Oh, let me see. Let me see.
- S-Stop it.
- Okay, all right.
- Stop.
- Can you get up?
- [groans]
- Okay, okay.
Okay. Easy does it.
Easy does it. You might--
Real nasty knock to the head.
- Come on. Come on.
- [wincing]
NATASHA: Why are
we going back up?
It's all clear below this level,
and we need
to get you out of here.
- You okay?
- Yeah. Yeah, okay.
We don't--We don't
have a choice here.
Well, we--
we have to do it
from the higher end
to make a safe way out.
I bet you didn't think
you'd spend your last
few moments on this Earth
like this, would you?
[chuckles]
Spent next to
an unhinged radical eco-maniac.
Can't think
of a better way to go.
[chuckles] Right.
Well, for what it's worth,
Natasha said Senator Carlson
approved your drilling.
Yeah. Yeah, he did.
Terry is
a majority owner in ArcStar...
through a bunch
of shell companies.
I've sued your company
a hundred times.
- I never knew.
- I know. I know.
Senator is a good guy, though.
That's why we got, uh,
such special attention.
Look, for what it's worth...
I couldn't take it anymore.
I wanted out.
I wanted to help, not hurt.
Why didn't you
say anything before?
[laughs] When?
When was I supposed to?
In court?
That would have been
the death of the company,
the death of 200,000 jobs.
To be honest,
I mean, we were cutting edge.
We were developing
some pretty amazing technology.
My biggest regret...
is that it took
so long to leave.
And I left because of you,
because of what you stand for.
Come on, babe.
All right! Hold here!
Hold!
FEMA office is the 14th floor.
Come on. Come on.
[panicked chatter]
Go, go, go!
You got it. You got it.
- Okay, go left.
- Straight to the roof!
Straight up to the roof!
Use the stairs!
David! What are you
still doing here?
- What do you mean?
- Where's Molly?
She went downstairs
to find other survivors
on the lower floors.
- And she hasn't come back yet?
- No.
I mean, I'm doing
the best I can here.
I found Natasha
when the building tipped over
and the stairwell
started to cave in.
Okay, did you
see anybody else down there?
I didn't see much of anything
after I got cold-cocked
by concrete.
Okay. All right, um...
All right, Terry,
there's a group of survivors
coming upstairs to you now.
You get them off, lift 'em,
take 'em back to base,
and then come right back for us.
This building's
about to fall down on us.
Ronnie, you're gonna clear
the rest of the floors, okay?
Newton and I are
going to go after Molly.
Send any remaining survivors
straight to the roof.
You got it.
Newton, sic.
Good dog. Come on, baby.
Come on! Come on!
Come on! Go! Go!
Keep your heads down! Go!
Go! Go! Heads down!
[Newton barking]
- ERIC: Molly!
- Newton? What?
Molly, where are you?
- Eh...
- We're here!
- Here!
- We're down here.
- Help!
- The rubble's too steep!
We can't climb out on our own.
Here. Here!
Here I am. Grab my hand.
- [yelps]
- That's it. Come on.
[grunting]
- All right. Got it?
- Thank you.
- Come on.
- Yep, I got it.
ERIC: Okay.
Terry, what's your ETA?
Dropping off survivors now.
I'll be back in two minutes.
- Molly.
- Okay, we'll be there.
We'll be right there.
ERIC: This is
the safest place to wait.
Rest of the floors are cleared.
Everyone's accounted for.
This place is
falling apart, though.
All right,
we'll meet you on the roof,
Jennings...
I've got word of an impounded
fourth drilling rig.
Was there some sort
of authorization
from another agency
we weren't made aware of?
Oh, wait. Wait.
Those might be ours.
Your rigs? Who authorized you?
Whoa, whoa, whoa. We were
digging a seismic cloak.
Are you out of your mind?
Have you not seen
what's happening
out there in the city?
Natasha, it worked.
We took the magnitude
of the earthquake
from an 8.7 out to a 6.3.
You don't know what the residual
impact has on the San Andreas.
For all we know,
the seismic cloak
reflected the Rayleigh waves,
which sent them bouncing
onto some brittle tectonic
plates that have yet to shift.
Oh, my God. David.
David, that's it.
A-All the fault lines
running under
Southern California,
connected to
the San Andreas Fault line.
That's why it's bouncing
back and forth so quickly.
I-It isn't just energy.
They're connected!
What? How is that even possible?
All those years of fracking,
that's what triggered
the Hollywood earthquake.
It--All those fault lines
connected to the San Andreas,
it's created a new fault line.
We have to sever it.
What are you talking about?
- Natasha, stand down.
- Stand down?
Where the hell
do you think you are?
We're not back at SOCOM.
You're in my world here.
Okay, look.
Natasha, look.
Look out there.
Do you see all that?
That is all gonna be gone
if we don't do something
about this right now.
All of the fault lines
running underneath us
connected to the San Andreas,
they're just gonna create
an earthquake of 20.0
that's gonna destroy everything
if we don't stop this right now!
The chopper's back.
Let's get the hell out of here.
Okay, time to evac. Let's go.
- David, come on.
- Okay.
Okay, okay. Come on.
Get aboard there.
- You good. You good.
- All right.
Let's go, men! Let's go! Get in!
[wincing]
CLAY: Ava!
- Clay, where are you going?
- Ava!
- That's the wrong way.
- Ava! Ava!
Clay, we are the only ones
out this far!
- Sven and Yolanda are--
- We have to find Ava!
- Clay!
- Guys!
- [grunts]
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, my God.
- [panting]
- [gasps]
- You all right?
- You all right?
- We gotta go.
What are you doing here,
all right?
The whole bridge is on lockdown.
We gotta go now.
We gotta get out of here.
No, there was a little girl.
She was on the bus
with everybody else,
and then she ran off.
Do they have her?
All right.
Officer, this is Albrecht.
I need a 20
on a little girl, name of...
- Ava!
- Ava! Do you have her?
- Is she with you?
- Negative.
The kids
are asking about her, too.
You're saying
there's one more missing?
Yes!
- We can't--Wait!
- We have to go, okay?
That building is headed
straight for us.
I know.
I'm right behind you, okay?
I'm gonna help them
find the kid.
Wait. Chrissy, Chrissy, Chrissy.
[gasps] Please be careful, okay?
Don't do anything too crazy.
Have you met my family?
[chuckles]
[panting]
Damn it.
We're working
from incorrect data.
The quake is gonna be
bigger than we thought.
Our--Our data was wrong.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
How much bigger?
We predicted
a magnitude of 8.7,
but we also miscategorized
the earthquake
that hit Hollywood at a 5.7.
Meaning what?
Meaning we could be looking
at a 20.0 megaquake.
We need to reduce
the stress on the fault lines.
That's impossible.
We just did it.
We just need to figure out
where the fault lines
of the Southern and Northern
California fault lines meet.
Then what?
Then we just need
to find the access point,
and we disrupt it.
What, you mean blow it up?
Do we even know
where that point is?
Maybe, but we need to get
back to the Command Center.
No, the Command Center
is destroyed.
Wait. Drop me off
near Hill Street.
I might have access
to data I can send you.
We're gonna need
some big firepower.
How big?
The MBS 86 GOTA warhead,
Guided Ordnance,
Thermobaric Armament,
exponentially more powerful
than the MOAB or
FOAB high-yield bombs.
We gonna have
to bury it down deep...
close to the access point.
We have a lot of work
ahead of us.
We gotta get started.
- Yep. Yep.
-Natasha, let's go.
Good luck.
Go save your kids!
Thank you.
Take us up!
You got it.
[dramatic music playing]
[gasping]
CLAY: Ava!
Ava! Ava!
Guys, she's over here!
She's over here!
Ava, oh, we have to go.
Come on. We have to go.
Get away! Get away!
No, I'm gonna help you!
I'm here to help you!
No, I'm gonna take you
to your friends.
- We have to go.
- No! You dropped my teacher.
Chrissy, you're gonna
have to take her.
She won't let me touch her.
Okay, Ava, this is Chrissy.
She's my sister.
Sh-She's gonna help you.
She won't drop you.
She's never let me down before.
[Ava yelps]
[panicked gasping]
- We have to go!
- Guys, we gotta go!
- Grab her! Grab her!
- Hurry! Come on!
- We gotta go! We gotta go!
- Go!
Come on!
The building!
The building's coming
down towards the bridge!
Wait, there's Clay,
Chrissy, and Sven!
- Take us down!
- Ronnie!
Get us down!
Copy that! Hang on!
Keep moving!
- [overlapping chatter]
- Go! Go! Go! Go!
- Come on. Run. Come on.
- [blades thrumming]
Come on.
Come on, come on, come on.
- Come on. Come on.
- Go, go, go!
Get on. Get on. In you go.
All right. Hey. [grunts]
- Here. Good.
- Go, go, go!
All right. Let's go, mate!
Let's go! Get in!
We'll never lift off!
We need to drop weight!
Anything that's not tied down,
get rid of it now.
Pass it over!
- I got it.
- Let's go.
Unload!
Come on! Here! Here! Here!
- Come on!
- Almost there!
Come on!
It's almost empty!
You gotta get up here, Sven!
- Come on.
- Come on.
RONNIE: It's still too heavy!
Come on! Up! Up! Up!
We're still too heavy!
We can't lift off!
- Sven! No!
- No!
Up! Up! Up!
Sven!
[sobbing]
- No!
- [gasping]
Everything's gonna be okay.
Natasha came through.
I can probably pinpoint
the faults with this.
It looks there are
actually five points
we need to disrupt.
We're going to need
more ordnance.
Eric, General Guillermin's
on the line.
I briefed him.
I-I know him.
Let me talk to him.
General,
this is Griffin Richards.
Griffin? I thought
I'd be speaking
with Corporal Eric Martin.
Make it quick, Mr. Richards,
because right now,
you are enemy number one
with Senator Carlson.
Good thing I never liked him.
I think we can save California
from falling into the ocean.
There are five points
where the northern and
southern fault lines meet.
If we place
an MBS 86 GOTA warhead
at each of these locations
at a depth of 435 feet,
these detonations should
fracture the fault lines
and reduce the seismic stress.
And as it turns out,
we already have 138 boreholes
drilled to that depth.
All right, Griffin,
I'm authorizing the ordnance.
But if this fails,
I'm holding you
personally accountable.
[dramatic music playing]
Hey.
Oh, my God.
Thank God you guys are okay.
Hey. Hey.
Wait a minute. Where's--
Where's Sven?
He didn't make it.
[sentimental music playing]
PILOT: Delivering ordnance now.
Let's pray this works.
Number three in place.
Number four in place.
[emergency dispatch chatter]
That's four out of five.
The last one
needs to be placed
under the ocean floor
by Long Beach.
How are we
supposed to do that?
I-I need these bombs
at a depth of 435 feet.
Oil rigs!
I grew up in Long Beach.
They're everywhere.
Yeah, okay. Let me find some.
MOLLY: We have a solution.
Use the oil rigs.
One's up this hill.
MOLLY: You need
to take apart the oil rig
and drop the bomb
down the drill shaft.
PILOT: Copy.
Taking them apart now.
All right, ordinance
is down the hatch.
That should do it.
NATASHA: Molly,
your team is currently
over the widest part
of the fault lines.
That area could cave in
any second.
Hey! Hey!
We gotta get everybody
in the air right now!
I want everybody airlifted
out of here first.
Once you're in the air
and out of the blast zone,
we can then start the countdown.
Will that give us enough time?
GRIFFIN: All aboard! Come on!
- Get aboard!
- We're good! Go!
Keep the rotors turning!
Let's get up!
Come on, let's go.
[rumbling]
MOLLY: Get those people
out of here! Go!
The fault line
is starting to rupture!
Run!
To the police car!
Come on!
Go, honey!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Dad, go!
- Drive! Drive! Drive!
Go! Drive!
The GOTAs, the earthquake,
it's gonna set them off.
We're not gonna
have time for the countdown.
Honey, please!
- Go!
- [panting]
Oh, my God!
[tires squealing]
[rubble crashing]
[all panting]
- It worked.
- It worked.
It worked. It worked.
Yeah.
You two okay?
Is it over?
Define "over."
- [both laugh]
- [chuckles]
[sirens blaring]
[dramatic music playing]
City's a mess.
Could have been worse.
NATASHA: It's going
to get more difficult.
Senator Carlson is
trying to shut you down.
What's your experience with him?
Political opportunist.
I mean, he was
a complete climate denier
when it got him votes,
but totally swung
in the opposite direction
when it got him even more votes.
GRIFFIN: It's not votes.
It's money and power,
and he won't stop
'til he has 'em both.
But if we stick together,
he can't buy us, right?
- Right.
- Absolutely, Mom.
We're going to need
a new Command Center
up and running ASAP.
How do we do that?
Redundancy.
Before I came onboard,
I invested a lot
in the Command Center.
My team built a prototype
at my estate in North Carolina.
You took my designs and
developed them without me?
I had to make sure it worked.
David helped.
Well, it was more conceptual
than practical.
Careful. My sources tell me
there's been an unseasonable
cold snap in the Carolinas.
That's FEMA Region 4.
So we'll be
someone else's headache?
Don't think you're gonna
get rid of me that easily.
I'm always watching.
Good. We need to keep in touch.
We're going to keep an eye
on the aftershocks in Northern
and Southern California,
because I-I do have a theory.
The mantle of the Earth
is malleable.
It's too hot to retain
any seismic strain,
and these quakes are showing
something very different.
What's that?
Well, the mantle of the Earth
is retaining
the seismic strain,
which means it's getting cooler.
We have more tests to run
on that theory first.
Let's stay in touch, then.
What do you think?
You want to continue?
I guess I got a whole car ride
to a plane ride to a plane ride
back east to think about it.
Yeah. We can talk along the way.
Okay.
[dramatic music playing]
[music fades]
CLAY: Hey, Dad...
You know, I--
I think you're right.
Uh, I kind of need
to talk to somebody.
These past few days,
they've been...
a lot.
Yeah.
I'm always here if--
if you want to talk.
No. Sorry.
I-I meant I was wondering if
I could talk to your therapist.
I mean, you seem to think she's
doing a pretty good job, so...
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, no, absolutely.
For sure. Um, I can
certainly recommend her.
Cool. Just as long
as I don't have to sit through
any more of these
awkward father-son talks.
[laughs]
[both laughing]
We haven't even started.
Oh, God.
[laughs]
[mellow music playing]
[instrumental playing]
[dramatic music continues]
Mom, we're gonna miss
the start of the science fair!
[woman sighs]
I know.
I know. I know.
I know. I know. I know.
We'll go in a second.
I just--I can't find my keys.
[sighs]
- [rumbling]
- BOY: What?
[rumbling]
Mom!
Stevie, under the table now.
[rumbling continues]
Go! Go, go, go!
Run! Run!
[dramatic music playing]
Reports are coming in
of a major incident
- north of Malibu...
- ...coined this
as a category-6 earthquake,
are expected to be...
All hands.
All hands, backup now!
[groans]
MOLLY: Can this thing
go any faster?
GRIFFIN: The computers estimated
28 hours before the quake.
We'll be in California
before then. Just relax.
[sighs]
[cabin light pings]
Could really get used to this.
Is that why you buddied up
to Griffin Richards,
so you don't have
to fly coach anymore?
What? I'm not allowed
to enjoy a little relaxation?
Am I gonna be
one of your targets now?
This jet is solar powered,
after all.
Come on, David. You're the one
that brought him into this.
DAVID: Yeah, and look at all
the good it's already done.
I mean, all the people
we saved back in Hawaii.
Your benefactor has made
a career out of ruining mine.
All right,
so look at it this way.
Our biggest detractor
is now on our side.
If we can convince public
enemy number one to join us,
- then there's hope yet.
- [scoffs]
Okay, I didn't know
that he was illegally
drilling into volcanoes,
but who would have
thought of that?
I have spent half my career
suing assholes like him
because of the sneaky things
that they do.
The technology
that we're using right now
is generations
ahead of its time...
doing good, fixing the world,
and all because of that man.
Him? Oh, come on.
It's because
of people like Yolanda,
Sven, my kids,
and even my husband.
All he did was write a check,
and we had to clean up
his P.R. mess.
So you're either
gonna fix this, or I will.
Bad news. There's been
a landslide in Ventura County.
- What?
- Multiple reports
have seven dead,
45 missing, 13 homes lost.
PCH is closed
in both directions.
Luckily, there's no signs
of a tsunami.
Does it say what caused it?
Looks like it was sudden.
USGS has a 4.3
centered in Emeryville
Does it say exactly
where it was located?
Unincorporated community
near Malibu,
about 45 miles
west of Los Angeles.
I think I know where that is.
We land in 20, F.Y.I.
Copy.
Chrissy and Clay and Eric
should be on the ground by now.
I'll let them know
where we're headed.
Okay, tell them,
but I don't want them
to change anything
of what they're doing.
You know, Eric wanted to have
a nice, quiet weekend
with the kids.
It's--It's a therapy thing.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah.
Can you wake up Sven?
[clears throat]
We land already?
No. Listen, when we land,
I want to go straight
to the disaster site.
I want an exact location.
- On it.
- What happened?
There was a massive landslide
in Ventura County,
but we're gonna work
with the local authorities
to help them
with search and rescue,
recovery, first aid,
whatever they need help on.
I also want to get soil samples
of the landslide debris.
I'll get the trauma kits ready.
Thank you.
Yolanda, if you
could please call USGS.
I want to know
if they were monitoring
a landslide when it failed.
I also want their data
on the 4.2 earthquake.
On it.
[dramatic music playing]
[emergency chatter]
We got a couple--
cutting out your staff.
Uh, need to extricate--
We got a couple in a Chevrolet
over there we need to extricate.
Uh, can you get some water?
Because I think they're
gonna be there for a while.
I'll see if anyone
needs any help.
I'll go with you.
I gotta call in the second rig.
This is the same place,
isn't it,
where Clay and Chrissy
were trapped
in that landslide back in 2010.
Yeah.
Yeah, if you just step this way,
we can get you treated
over at the triage station.
[emergency dispatch chatter]
Step back! Step back!
Is it possible
for a 4.2 in Camarillo,
20 miles away, reactivate
a 12-year-old landslide?
No. A shallow quake
in this region wouldn't disturb
previously failed material
from that long ago.
See, that's not
what I'm understanding. I--
A shallow quake
wouldn't do this.
How deep was this?
Maybe the ground saturated
and the two
aren't connected at all?
No, I need to check
the national weather readings.
Ah, it shows...
no measurable rainfall
in the area.
I-I'm not seeing any mud
or slurry conditions.
RESPONDER:
Let's get this road clear.
We need to get some samples.
Yeah.
RESPONDER: Come on. Move it.
This road is now closed.
Let's move, people.
We don't have much time.
Stabilizing water pressure.
Check.
RESPONDER: Come on. Let's go.
Okay, stay calm.
We got you. We got you.
Okay, stay calm. We got you.
Wait, Dad, is--
is this the place
where the landslide...
Why would you bring us...
- I didn't realize.
- Dad.
- Yeah, he's right.
- I can't be here.
CHRISSY: This is the place.
We gotta go.
We gotta get Clay out of here.
Come on. Let's just go.
Eric.
Molly.
What are you doing up here?
Did you know that this
was the same place as last time,
where Clay and Chrissy almost...
Yes.
I gotta get them out of here.
Dad, we gotta go.
Clay, you okay?
I can't--I can't breathe.
Okay, just long,
slow breaths for me, okay?
- Clay.
- [ragged breathing]
- Breathe. Breathe.
- Take one of these.
Chrissy, get him to take that.
- I--
- Put it in your mouth.
- Take this, okay?
- Put it in your mouth.
Just put it--Open up. Here.
[gags]
- It's so sour.
- It's malic acid.
Malic acid. Warheads.
- Sour candy.
- What does that do?
You feel that?
- [steadier breathing]
- That's it. It's--
The sour taste in your mouth,
it distracts us
from--from the symptoms.
My therapist put me onto it.
I-It breaks up the stress.
How are you feeling?
- I think it's working.
- Yeah.
All right. Okay, look.
Guys, I think I'm--
I'm calling it, all right?
We're getting out of here.
Molly, Clay needs a minute.
We'll meet you back
at the Command Center.
Please, somebody help me.
I need to find my son!
Stevie! Please!
Please, somebody.
- Please just help me.
- Ma'am, it's okay.
- How can I help you?
- My son.
I need you
to help me find my son.
Okay, what does he look like?
If anybody can find him,
my team can.
He's--He's 4'11",
and he's, um, got green eyes.
- His name is Stevie.
- Stevie, okay.
Stevie. Please, please,
please, please.
Sven! Yolanda!
Her son is missing.
His name is Stevie.
He's about 4'11", green eyes.
- I saw her kid. Okay.
- Stevie. Stevie.
- Look--
- Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
- No, it's okay.
- Thank you so much.
It's gonna be okay.
- Mom?
- Is that your mom?
- They found him.
- Mom!
- Stevie! Oh, Stevie! Stevie!
- Mom!
Stevie. Oh! Oh, my--
- Mom.
- Are you okay? [crying]
- Are you okay?
- I'm good.
- Okay. Come on. Let's go.
- Come on.
- One of my old professors...
- I'll call you back.
over at CalTech
is now here at USGS Moffett.
He sent over
some seismographic data
leading up
to the landslide in Ventura.
Let's see what they got.
The only activity
within the last 24 hours
is around Ventura and
north of Santa Barbara.
But the strongest was a 4.2,
and that usually
doesn't get much attention.
And I get that this is, uh,
centralized to the faults,
but it's also FEMA headquarters,
just so you know.
Yeah, that's gotta
make you nervous, huh?
GRIFFIN: It's a valid concern.
Okay, so this 4.2, it was
located in Ventura, right?
GRIFFIN: Maybe we should
relocate to Ventura County.
YOLANDA: It was preceded
by two foreshocks
within a 15-mile radius of
the epicenter, three days apart.
- Magnitude?
- Micro.
1.4 and a .8.
The last one happened
36 hours ahead of the 4.2.
GRIFFIN: Is anybody
listening to me?
The others were shallow,
easily detectable.
The 4.2, no, that was deeper.
The data was sent
by a research team
conducting
oil-field-based studies
somewhere near Seal Beach
in Orange County.
GRIFFIN: Hey!
Look, I know my company
has done
some pretty crappy stuff,
but all these pretty things
you're playing with right now,
I pay for it.
So are we still a team or not?
- DAVID: Yeah.
- Great.
Of course.
We're just a little busy.
This earthquake, it penetrated
deeper than 15 miles?
[scoffs] Try 18.
What?! 18 miles?
I mean, that's deep enough
to penetrate the upper mantle.
Mm-hmm.
Seal Beach is adjacent
to the Elsinore Fault.
That's a lateral strike
slip fault.
Yeah, it turns out that wasn't
the first time, either.
The oil-field study
had data from a 2.3 and a 2.7
both taking place
four weeks apart.
The seismographic sensors
didn't pick up on that, either.
2.3 to 4.2 earthquake,
all happening within a month,
deep enough to penetrate
the upper mantle.
I mean, I know
the San Fernando Valley
is 40 miles away from Ventura,
and they're both on
the Ventura-Petis Point Fault.
Yeah. A deep quake
of that magnitude
could produce
enough energy to trigger
significantly larger and
more damaging surface quakes.
Oh, my God.
And a landslide
on the same slope
that failed 12 years ago.
This is not good, Yolanda.
That's bad news.
CHRISSY:
Are you sure you're ready?
CLAY: Yeah.
Let's get back to work.
MOLLY: So look...
the 4-Sight...
Protocol system.
With this, we can build
the most advanced
seismic warning system
we have ever seen.
And we can tell people
not just when this
is gonna happen, but where.
We'll be able
to give them not just seconds,
but hours to react,
maybe even days.
Is something like this
even possible?
Nobody's been able to come up
with something
this comprehensive.
Well, how wide-ranging
and comprehensive
do you expect
this detection system to be?
As our technologies have gotten
smarter over the past 15 years,
so have the data
that they can produce.
They can provide us with
some of the most accurate data
for the purposes of earthquake
detection and prediction.
It would fill in a blind spot
that has limited
those abilities for years.
But, Mom, you realize
the level of state and federal
regulatory compliance
that we'd be up against, right?
But that's just it.
The same companies that are
driving up climate change
are also the ones
collecting information,
and they're sharing
that information
with academic institutions
and law enforcement,
so why aren't we privy
to that same information?
We could save millions of lives.
Exactly. We're not
interested in who, only when.
I think that might be a steeper
climb than you're anticipating.
[rumbling]
Everybody, take cover!
- [grunting]
- Down! Get down!
[screaming]
[rumbling subsides]
Everyone okay?
I'm all right.
You all right?
Yeah, mate.
Clay. Clay, you all right? Clay.
I'm fine. I just need a moment.
Are you sure you're okay?
I said I'm fine.
- I'm fine, Mom.
- Okay.
Just need a minute.
Okay. Okay.
[sighs]
Whew.
Not getting reception.
Cell tower's down?
No, it's jammed
with everybody else
- trying to do the same thing.
- Okay.
NATASHA: And that
outlines the FEMA response.
Oh, look who it is.
Next, I would like
to bring up
Senator Terry Carlson of
the great state of California.
He serves as the chair
of the Senate Committee
of Homeland Security.
Senator?
Thank you, Natasha.
Homeland Security
provides assistance to FEMA
and other vital organizations.
At this time,
our team is on standby,
ready to assist
should there be a need.
As you heard earlier, this was
a 5.4-magnitude earthquake
located 15 miles
southeast of Los Angeles
on the newly discovered
Hollywood Fault Line.
REPORTER: Senator Carlson,
we're getting reports--
And today, we're not going
to be taking any questions.
- Senator Carlson!
- Over here! Over here!
Please, just shut that off.
Shut that thing off.
Good afternoon.
This is the FEMA hotline.
How may I address
your call, sir?
Uh-huh.
Yep. It's a political maneuver,
But if they strip FEMA
provisions out of the budget,
that's how we get guys like
Griffin Richards and his team
showing up to major crises.
Yeah.
Uh-huh.
Copy.
[sighs]
Are you kidding me right now?
[scoffs]
Jeff, Griffin Richards here.
Heh. I'm great. Thank you.
Listen, uh, you got a minute,
or am I keeping you
from getting on
another rocket into orbit?
Wh-What can I say?
You've been to space.
But don't you worry.
I'm--I'm on my way, too.
He's doing it again.
Listen, I need your input
on something I'm working here.
I'm pretty sure
you felt that earthquake
down in Malibu, right?
Right. Well,
what if there was a way
to start predicting
these things before they happen?
I know. I know nobody else has
been able to do it until now,
and I want you in on it.
That's right. It's something
I've been working on myself.
You've got to control him.
He's helping.
We're gonna head to Hollywood,
see if anyone needs a hand.
Okay. Keep in contact.
Back in a bit.
DAVID: All right. See you, guys.
So I've got meetings
in both Pasadena and Culver City
with two of the biggest
tech companies that ever lived.
They're gonna make
your earthquake software
more powerful.
Well, then I'm coming with you.
Absolutely not.
Because it took you
so long to convince me.
And I'm not sure
your position has even changed.
Really? What do
you think this is?
A P.R. move.
Molly, I left
my company for this.
No, I-I think you quit
so that you wouldn't
get in trouble for drilling
off the coast of Hawaii,
so that you
wouldn't have to take
responsibility for all that.
Look, I'm not
going anywhere, okay,
because I have a stake in this.
- Which is?
- [sighs]
You remember Hurricane Florence?
Well, I grew up in Wilmington.
My parents still live there.
When it hit,
ArcStar pledged 250 million.
Me, myself, I doubled it,
and that was after
the damage was already done.
Now we can fix things
before it happens.
So maybe
my environmental impact report
that you challenged in court
wasn't written by a--
Wait, what was it you called me
in your deposition?
Um, that's right.
An unhinged radical eco-maniac.
Little word of advice?
Don't hold a grudge.
Good. The gang is all here.
Natasha.
What are you doing here?
What am I doing here?
You are parked
under the FEMA building.
Well, in case you didn't notice,
there was an earthquake.
Our research brought us here.
And actually, I'm--
I'm kind of glad to see you,
because our evidence
is showing that we are nearing
a real-life Big One scenario
in Southern California.
So we need to start
planning evacuations,
search and rescue,
gathering supplies.
The credible agencies
tracking seismic activity
haven't said one word about
any danger of a massive quake.
Your team got lucky in Hawaii.
But if I sense even
a whiff of impropriety here,
you're all doing federal time.
Natasha, look,
our tech is just as good
as theirs, if not better.
We can mitigate
any natural disasters
caused by climate change.
Prevention when possible.
Rescue and recovery when we can.
Specializing
in natural disasters
caused by
your billionaire founder.
What we did in Hawaii
was a success,
despite your attempts
to stop it.
You want to see
the letters thanking us?
[chuckles]
It's always a pleasure, Natasha.
Excuse me.
I have to go to a meeting.
Excuse me.
CHRISSY: You know what, Natasha?
All you care about
is making the rich richer.
You do not care about
the people on this planet.
If you did,
you would not be here
questioning my mom
for a second time.
[cellphone buzzing]
Hello. Senator Carlson.
Mm-hmm.
Did you mean
what you said to Natasha,
that the Big One's on its way?
Well, not just the Big One.
I'm talking about an earthquake
that could trigger
dozens of fault lines.
Thousands dead,
tens of thousands
missing or injured,
aftershocks of 6.3 or higher,
that could go on
for years or longer.
But your 4-Sight Protocol,
y-you're saying
that this could end all of it?
4-Sight could save
countless lives.
I mean, if we could just get
everyone onboard to participate,
even billionaire
climate deniers.
I just wish you could see me
as an ally moving forward.
After all your years
of climate denying, Griffin?
[both chuckle]
Let's not
get ahead of ourselves.
Let me prove myself to you
in these meetings.
Okay. It's a long road ahead,
and there are zero shortcuts.
Are you sure you're up for this?
Oh, yeah.
Just got a lot of work
to do, that's all.
[sirens blaring]
Molly, we're in Hollywood.
Electricity's out.
There's some power lines down
with the quake,
but that's
about the extent of it.
They're veering us
through a detour at the moment
out of the area. How's Clay?
He's with Yolanda and Chrissy,
executing program threads
on the 4-Sight O.S.
Have you
checked on him, Molly?
Look, I know
what PTSD looks like,
and he's still struggling
with Ventura.
I managed to get a little bit
out of him, but you know Clay.
He's not one to go sharing
his problems with us.
I know that Clay is struggling.
I've tried to get him
to open up,
but he just--
he won't talk to me.
If he's opening up to you,
then--then that's great.
Well, it's three sentences
instead of the usual one.
That sounds like Clay.
Look, when you're back,
l-let's sit down
and talk about this.
- [rumbling]
- [tires squeal]
Uh, Molly, we better go.
[sirens approaching]
- [all grunting]
- Come on.
Come on! Come on!
We got you, mate. We got you.
Okay, up. Okay, up.
Hey, Clay.
Could I talk to you
for a minute?
Listen...
I just wanted to say
that I'm sorry
for what happened this morning.
I-I would never intentionally
put you and your sister
through that again.
And I just--I know
that when I'm worried
or I have something going on,
it always helps me
to just face it head-on.
A-And maybe you're not
there yet, and that's okay.
But when you are,
I just--I want you to know
that I'm here for you.
Okay? I-I'm always here for you.
Okay. Sure.
Can I get back to it now?
Yeah, sweetheart. Yes.
[sirens blaring]
ERIC: Okay, fella.
That's it. Right there.
That's good.
Slow, deep breaths, okay?
That's it.
Slow it down. Good.
Okay, grab him some water,
will you, mate?
Thanks for getting me out.
It isn't the first time
we've had an incident like this.
Quade Oil.
[inhales, coughs]
They've been drilling
over in Seal Beach
about 40 miles from here.
Ever since
they've been over there,
we've had bad air quality,
small quakes,
and sinkholes keep happening,
all because of the fracking.
I thought they banned
fracking in Los Angeles.
Seal Beach is in Orange County.
[coughs]
Locals have got this covered.
We should get back to HQ.
All right,
you gonna be okay here?
- I'm gonna be okay.
- Okay, take it easy, all right?
- Thanks.
- All right.
Hang in there, mate.
GRIFFIN: I convinced
both tech companies to give us
a limited three-month
data-sharing agreement.
Three months
is good enough for now.
So let's get those
last remaining data sources
into 4-Sight
and bring it fully online.
Yeah, yeah. Onto it.
Hey, Griffin.
Yeah?
I just want you
to know you did good.
Well, you've been
right about all of this.
I should have paid attention
then, but I'm listening now.
Thank you.
Ah. Looks like you
got the 4-Sight Protocol
up and running.
Almost at full capacity.
Griffin just secured
the last piece that we needed.
We're running all tests.
4-Point is tracking
a possible 6.8.
Okay. I've gained access
to the shared data sources.
It'll take a minute
to initiate plug-ins
to the system
software apparatus.
What happened to you guys?
Aw, nothing. It was
just a sinkhole opened up.
Sven and I pulled
a few blokes out.
Couple of bruises, nothing much.
But, Molly, they reckon
that that sinkhole
was due to fracking
in Seal Beach.
What do you want to bet
that's what caused
the earthquake in Hollywood?
Well, that was a 5.2
at 4 1/2 mile depth,
and we know
that fracking-induced quakes
are shallower
than naturally induced ones.
And apparently that's not
the first time
it's happened, either.
Okay, we're in.
4-Sight software is
running at increased capacity.
Diagnostics are updating.
Stand by.
Uh, Clay, hold up.
I want to calibrate the software
by .8 magnitude.
Manmade sites caused by fracking
are much weaker
than natural ones.
Well, the software's updating.
That's not a 6.8.
It's an 8.3.
Well, maybe there's
another explanation.
Uh, maybe the reading is wrong.
No, 4-Sight is doing everything
we designed
and programmed it to do.
If it says it's an 8.3,
it's an 8.3.
Do you have the analytics
ready to show?
FEMA needs a head up.
Oh, r-really?
That's where your head goes,
Natasha?
After what she did
to us in Hawaii?
You gotta alert FEMA
so they can help.
Just so you know,
she stopped by.
She's not interested.
What's that supposed to mean?
Molly, when's
the quake supposed to hit?
I-I'm not sure.
I mean, right now,
it's--it's looking like a week.
Yeah. Yeah.
Okay, so the projections
have shifted.
It's--It's less than two days.
The data is--
it's just still updating.
I-It could be less.
So now what?
- What do we do?
- Okay, okay, okay.
CHRISSY: Mom.
MOLLY: Uh...
- Molly--
- Eric, please!
Just let me think!
[rumbling]
That's it.
I have an idea.
We're gonna warn people,
but we're also
gonna take action.
We're gonna create
a seismic cloak.
We don't have that kind of time.
We're gonna have to make
that kind of time.
We have
2 million lives at stake.
Wh-What's a seismic cloak?
Okay, come here.
Everybody, come here.
Earthquakes proliferate
as waves of energy,
and the majority
of their destructive forces
come from
horizontal seismic waves
that move through solid ground.
Now, if those waves
can be absorbed or reflected,
they can also be canceled out.
So check this out.
So we're gonna drill shafts,
long boreholes spaced apart
in a careful grid manner
with the uniformity of the soil
so that when the seismic wave
passes through,
it'll lose its intensity.
So when the earthquake hits,
we won't be able to stop it,
but that 8.5
will be lessened to a 5.5.
Yeah, but that's
gonna take months,
and we only have days,
and that's if we're lucky.
Then we better get lucky,
because the most
devastating earthquake
that California
has ever seen is coming.
All right,
so take a look at this.
This is all the oil wells
that are currently or formerly
using hydraulic fracturing
all throughout California.
These are all fracking sites.
- They're everywhere.
- I know.
Seeing this map is
just absolutely appalling.
David, if you could layer in
the coordinates
for the Ventura landslide
and the quakes
in Riverside and Hollywood.
All three incidents occurred
near some
of the largest concentrations
of active and plugged
drilling sites in the area.
These incidents are all
in L.A. or Ventura County.
Fracking's banned.
Wastewater disposed
from the sites on this map
cause damage for years to come.
Every one of these sites
is pumping pressurized,
wastewater underground level
next to fault lines.
This is a disaster
waiting to happen.
I mean, if we could
show a connection
between all of this,
we could shut these sites down,
I mean, at least temporarily.
We just need
to show the connection
between all three
incident sites.
I'll get the drones in the air.
Good job, Clay.
What's wrong?
Colonel, I...
I wonder...
will God ever forgive us
for our sins?
For what we've done?
God left this place
a long time ago.
I did my time in Angola.
Hollywood site scan at 100%.
Loading complete lidar data set.
Slope angle is consistent
with the advanced
structural data form.
Eastern side of the rupture
has a round surface change
of approximately 7%...
[sighs] right lateral offset.
Thanks.
MOLLY: Scanning
for more coordinates.
Seismic activity on all
Southern California faults
- keeps increasing...
- Mm-hmm.
so I built three different...
- Thanks.
- Mm-hmm.
...seismic energy models
for greater Los Angeles area
based on body P-and-S waves
as well as surface Love
and Rayleigh wave patterns.
Thank you, sweetheart.
ERIC: Your mum wants to evacuate
millions of people from
Los Angeles and other counties?
Or, I mean, under the California
Emergency Services Act,
the governor and local officials
can declare
a state of emergency,
and then the--
the Sheriff's Department
can mandate an evacuation order.
It happens.
No, but, the OES is underneath
the governor's jurisdiction.
I mean, we get
one of them to comply,
- the rest might follow along.
- Yeah.
All right.
Well, Molly and I will head off
to the L.A. County
Sheriff's Department.
Is 4-Sight at full strength?
Yeah, and it's still
projecting a magnitude 8.3.
We need to build
a seismic cloak,
but we're running out of time.
Who do I hire
to make that happen?
Every mobile drilling rig
in Southern California
capable of reaching
a depth of 4,800 meters.
Okay, so we hire
every contractor
and subcontractor
that we can find.
Yeah, we're running
revised topography
availability estimates now.
- Where is it supposed to hit?
- Sun Valley.
The faster we can
configure the grids,
the faster we can get
the rigs into position.
All right, I'll get
the rigs ready to go.
Give me 15 minutes.
Okay, uh, Molly and I
will be in the SUV. We'll be off
to the L.A. County
Sheriff's office.
Chrissy, Sven,
Yolanda, and Clay,
you guys put the data together
and get it to Cal OES.
Local and state government
will be able
to react quickest to this.
- Everyone good to go?
- Yep.
All right.
Come on, Clay.
Molly, before you go in there
with your hair on fire,
maybe take a moment to consider
how you might be perceived.
Listen, I know
that you mean well,
but I know what I'm doing.
[cellphone rings]
Hey, David.
How's it going?
Yeah, final analysis
of the grid is complete.
Uh, my estimates
have the boreholes...
at 80 square miles,
positioned at varying distances
from each other.
Hello. Am I speaking
with the CEO
of Acme Drilling and Refining?
Yeah, Griffin Richards here.
I need all of them,
as long as they can reach
the depth that we need.
Yeah? What do you mean? Yes.
Every man that you have
at triple hazard pay.
We need 138 boreholes
within the next hour.
Now, what do you mean you can't?
Make it five times hazard pay.
Ten times! I really don't care.
Just get it done.
Great. Always a pleasure
doing business with you.
Hey, how many rigs
have we secured?
Okay, we are
running out of time.
- We gotta start drilling now.
- [sighs]
YOLANDA: All right,
let's stay calm.
Let's not start a panic.
- We need to find transport...
- Excuse me. Officer Donnenfeld.
Officer Donnenfeld.
Officer Donnenfeld?
- How can I help you?
- Officer Donnenfeld.
Okay, my name
is Dr. Molly Martin.
There's a very real emergency
situation that we have.
Hi. I need to speak
to an ESM right now.
I'm George Fox, Emergency
Service Manager on duty.
May I help you?
There is going
to be an earthquake
in Sun Valley
in less than 48 hours.
I need you to order
an emergency evacuation.
There's been an earthquake?
No, no, no, it's coming.
It's a magnitude 8.3.
There was a 5.6
out in Hollywood.
No, no, no.
That was just a foreshock.
I think I would have
seen that on Quake Alert.
We have evidence
to back this up, okay?
Listen, we've built
a multifactor forecasting model
that utilizes
data-mining algorithms.
We've been working
with highly technical sensors
to gauge
electromagnetic anomalies.
No one's been able to predict
the size and location
of an earthquake.
We have built legitimate
forecasts to provide--
Look. Ample early warnings
to evacuate full populations.
Let me just stop you
right there.
We can't issue
an evacuation order
of that size for any earthquake.
We only have CDC- and
OSHA-approved measures
in place for that type of event.
No, but look. You can actually
coordinate an evacuation
away from the fault
if you get everyone
into communities
rated at an intensity
five or less.
Intensity five?
Don't you mean magnitude five?
I mean, that's how
earthquakes are measured.
No, Officer,
stop condescending
Dr. Martin, and listen.
All of the drill locations have
been sent to the rig crews.
Now all we can do is pray
that the boreholes
get drilled in time.
Pray?
I've got something
better than prayer, buddy.
Cash. And I've spent
enough of it this morning
to get the job done.
[dramatic music playing]
The only earthquake
evacuation plan that exists
is to evacuate severely damaged
areas after the incident.
Until then,
it's just duck and cover,
and hold on to your butt
'til everything stops shaking.
That's because
there's no warning system
yet in place to forecast
beyond a few seconds.
And yours does, huh?
Look, George,
all of our prequake data
for a magnitude of 8.3
and Sun Valley
is in that binder right there.
I don't have time
to go over all this.
- [scoffs]
- [sighs]
Are any other agencies
backing you up?
USGS, CEA?
California Geological Survey?
All of the info we've collected
is from the public systems
of USGS
and California Integrated
Seismic Network data.
So what--what do you
want me to do?
You don't have any verification
from any credible
scientific organization.
We have evidence.
Right there.
It would take me
a science degree
to make heads or tails of this.
Funny you should say,
because I happen to have three,
a PhD in geophysics,
a master's in climatology,
and a bachelor's
in statistical science.
So let me put it
to you this way.
There is going
to be an 8.3 earthquake
in Los Angeles County.
And that's all very dandy.
- Come on.
- God!
I can't. I can't.
CLAY: Is there
anyone else we can warn?
CHRISSY: We could try
the fire department.
SVEN: Isn't that
all the way across town?
YOLANDA: We'll take the bridge.
ERIC: Los Angeles County
aren't listening.
Sven and I served
with a couple of guys
who are now with Cal Fire
Forestry and Fire Protection.
Your two marine buddies aren't
enough to evacuate L.A. County.
[traffic honking]
SVEN: So much for the bridge
being faster.
Where are they?
Relax. They'll be here.
Molly, crew teams
have been drilling
at their assigned locations
for about six hours now.
148 drill rigs
all operating at the same time.
Hold on!
- Get down! Get down!
- Take cover!
- Get under the table!
- Get down!
- Get down, Captain!
- Under the table! Now!
- Here! Over here!
- Take cover!
[groans]
- Quick! Quick! Under the desk!
- [barks]
- COMPUTER: Warning! Warning!
- Quick! Quick! Under the desk!
[Molly groans] Thank you.
[whimpers]
You all right, kid?
You all right?
Yeah.
MOLLY: 4-Sight shows
an estimated 6.3.
- [sighs]
- Th-That's incredible.
So it worked.
Yeah, but w-we're still
getting earthquakes.
Yeah, but they're
not as bad, right,
not as deadly. That's amazing.
MOLLY: No, wait.
What?
We have a problem.
What problem?
Lower depths.
Sustained energy
along the Verdugo
and San Andreas Fault.
I see it.
So what? You're saying
there's another quake coming?
No, two fault lines
are connecting.
The power from one fault
will unleash
catastrophic seismic activity
along another fault,
and it's just gonna
keep on continuing
up the San Andreas fault and
the entire state of California.
What does that mean?
What I mean is
that with the next quake,
the state of California
is going to tear away
from the United States
and fall into the ocean.
[rumbling]
All clear! Flow back, start!
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Gene, we have to stop!
- I have my orders.
- Are you serious?!
Emergency shutdown!
Shut it down!
Let's go! Let's go!
[sirens blaring]
It's like the entire coastline
is eroding into the ocean.
MOLLY: What are the hot spots?
Checking now.
Looks like it missed
a few major centers,
like Frisco and San Diego,
but lots and lots
of coastal damage.
Hueneme was just a foreshock.
I-It's just as we feared.
C-Can somebody please
explain this to me in real time?
I mean, do we have hours?
Seconds? What?
Molly, I need
to talk to you now.
Yeah. Just give me
one second, Eric.
Molly, now.
I need to speak to you now.
- What?
- I've been trying to reach out
to the kids, anyone, Yolanda,
Sven. I can't get through.
The cell network's down.
Well, they were warning
the Department
of Emergency Management
with Yolanda and Sven.
They're probably
with the authorities right now.
And what if they're not?
Molly, we don't know
where the kids are.
I'm trying to keep them safe.
You know that.
You saw what just happened,
and another one is coming,
probably even bigger.
We don't have time to build
another seismic cloak.
All right, you go ahead
and save the world,
I'm gonna go find the kids.
GRIFFIN: Eric, wait. Wait.
I'm going to send you the number
to my chopper service.
You can't drive in this.
The roads are blocked.
- All right.
- DAVID: We're getting readings
there's an earthquake swarm
in L.A. County
along the San Andreas Fault.
I don't get it.
What am I missing here?
[screaming]
Let's go! Single file!
- Now! Now!
- Let's move!
Let's move! Let's go! Let's go!
Let's go! Let's go!
Come on! This way!
This way! Let's go!
Let's go! Let's go! Move! Move!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Single file! Single file!
Stay calm! Stay calm, everybody!
Okay, we gotta go, guys. Go.
- Okay, come on.
- Careful, guys.
Through here.
Keep going. Keep moving.
Keep moving. Keep moving!
You all right?
That's it. That's it.
Help me!
- Ma'am.
- I can't get out!
- It's jammed. Hold on.
- The door's jammed!
- I can't get out. Help me!
- It's all right.
- It's all right.
- Please!
- It's all right.
- Help me.
No, I got it! Come on!
Come on.
You gotta come with me.
Come with me. Come with me.
- My arm! My arm!
- It's all right.
It's all right.
We gotta go. We gotta go.
Come with me. You're okay.
We gotta go.
- Keep going. Keep going.
- Oh, my God. I'm hurt.
It's all right.
Clear the bridge!
Sir!
Sir, can you hear me? Sir?!
Oh, my God.
We need an ambulance over here!
Here. Hello?
We need an ambulance
over here now!
- Yolanda! Yolanda, help!
- Where do I go?
Clear the bridge!
- Chrissy.
- [grunts]
- Oh, my God.
- I think he's unconscious.
Okay. Oh, God.
Oh, he's not breathing.
I know. Come on. Come on.
- Um...
- We can't spend much time here.
We have to go help the others.
I can do this, okay?
- Just let me.
- Okay, okay.
- [grunts]
- Oh, come on.
[grunting]
Come on, Chrissy.
We don't have much time.
Come on, sir. Come on.
Chrissy.
We gotta leave him, Chrissy.
We gotta leave him.
Come on. We can't stay here.
Yolanda, I can't!
Come on. Come on.
- Come on.
- There he is.
- There he is.
- Oh, my God!
- Oh, my God!
- Sir, you're okay.
- All right?
- Where am I? What happened?
We have to get you out of here.
We have to get you
out of here, sir. Come on.
We gotta go back.
We gotta help the others.
- Okay. Sir.
- Come on.
Let's go!
Move! Move! Move! Move!
Oh, my God.
- Come on.
- Come on.
Come on. Come on.
Let's go.
- Are you okay?
- Yeah, yeah. I'm okay.
We gotta get out of here.
That bridge is coming.
We gotta go! We gotta go!
We are reporting
unprecedented...
Service is still down.
Maybe we can tap into FEMA.
I mean, they're right there,
10 feet away.
CARLSON: First of all,
my thoughts and prayers
to everyone out there affected
by this terrible tragedy.
Let's not sugarcoat this.
The Southern California
coastline
looks like a war zone.
Our primary focus
remains to save lives.
We're going to worry
about tallying
property damage later.
- Oh, oh.
- Yes? Question?
What do you make of reports
concerning a group
called REACthat is headed by ex-CEO
of ArcStar, Griffin Richards?
His team claims
they have knowledge
that a magnitude 8.3 quake
was imminent.
Excuse me. Okay?
Let me stop you right there.
Let me tell you about this
character, Griffin Richards.
This man has
been operating illegally
for years and years now.
Now he's trying to redo
his image by creating
some pseudo-environmental
company based on false data
and whatever
Griffin Richards thinks
absolves him from the damage
that he alone has created.
So you can rest assured,
once this tragic moment
in our history has passed,
we will conduct
an investigation.
And not only into Mr. Richards,
but the entire REACT team
for falsifying data
and creating panic.
[deep breath]
I promise you that.
- Senator?
- Next. Go ahead.
Will you be recommending...
We have a job to do.
Let's focus on that.
Yeah.
...and it's still talking
about drop and...
We gotta get away
from the bridge, okay?
Guys, guys, guys!
Take her. She's hurt, all right?
- Okay.
- She's hurt.
You're okay. We got you, okay?
We got you. Come on.
We need you to walk, okay?
We got you. We're not gonna
let anything bad happen, okay?
- Come on.
- It's okay.
It's okay. You need to go.
- Ava, you need to go.
- No. I don't want--
I sent all your other
classmates. You need to go.
Honey, I know you want to stay,
but you have to go.
Okay? Yes, you have to.
OLIVIA: Okay.
OLIVIA: Ava, Ava...
1, 2, 3. 1--
All right, are you injured?
Can you walk?
- My leg is broken.
- Oh.
It's broken.
Please, my school kids,
did you see them? Are they safe?
No, no, no.
But I'm sure we can find them.
- What's your name?
- Olivia.
- Olivia.
- This is Ava.
- Ava, hi.
- She didn't want
to leave my side
because I was hurt.
The others,
make sure they're okay.
Okay, okay, but we
have to get you out of here.
[screaming]
- I can't move. I can't walk.
- No, no, no.
No, no, no. You just leave me.
You have to go.
We're gonna get you
off this bridge.
[sighs] I can't get into FEMA.
Power sources
are down everywhere.
And if this keeps happening,
the San Andreas will rupture.
We'll get hit
with a 20.0 earthquake.
We need to get word out there,
even to your pal,
Senator Carlson.
We've got to get to FEMA.
I mean, they're right there.
They're 20 feet away.
Listen, don't worry
about Carlson, okay?
No one will be implicated.
I want you to stay here.
But I can talk to him.
I don't want you to make
things worse with the senator.
But I'm telling you
I know how to talk to him.
Please stay here.
Okay.
Okay. I'll stay
and monitor the earthquakes.
Thank you,
David.
[sighs] Great.
Excuse me! I'm looking
for Natasha Nakami!
- Down there.
- Thank you.
N-Natasha! Natasha!
- Molly, get out of my office.
- Natasha!
No, no. These quakes--
I don't have time
for your theories.
Hold on!
These quakes are gonna continue
moving up the coastline,
causing a 20.0 earthquake.
We have got
to evacuate the state!
Okay, we have time codes
for the quakes
that are going to happen,
and it is constantly updating.
Here. Take a look.
Look, I've got
time codes, okay?
We have already
accurately predicted
the next quakes to come.
You heard
what the senator said.
Your data is flawed.
- No, no, no.
- I'm going to have you
escorted off this floor.
These earthquakes
are penetrating
deeper than we
ever thought possible,
at least 18 miles deep,
and you know
that our data is not flawed.
Sorry for interrupting.
We got an ICS meeting in five.
I'm coming. And you're leaving.
Hold on. Natasha.
Natasha, wait.
We are looking in places
that nobody
ever even thought to look,
smart thermostats.
Once a user has put in
their temperature,
that data is logged.
And we have that data.
There is evidence
of a heat spike
up to eight degrees Celsius
three days
before an earthquake hits,
and we can have privy
to those locations.
So once people start
to put in their temperatures,
we have that.
Infrasonics.
We obtain infrasound signals
and compare them
to historical data
of earthquakes in the area.
I'm sorry. Pardon me.
Dr. Jennings Lang.
How are you conducting
the research?
We built a forecasting protocol
to combine precursors,
compare and contrast them
against each other
and previous historical data
to ascertain the size and
intensity of future quakes.
Wait, hydraulic fracturing
has played a role.
Stop. Fracking is
not the cause here.
Senator Carlson
did extensive studies
before he started
drilling in Hawaii...
- Whoa, whoa.
- and California.
Wait a minute. Senator Carlson?
Approved the drilling.
He actually
approved the drilling?
- We knew the 8.3 was coming...
- Yeah.
and we know
that dozens more on the way.
Y-You do?
You analyzed all these data sets
and identified the event?
Yeah, we tried
to go to state
and local authorities,
and they did nothing.
FEMA doesn't have
extra resources
to spend
on speculative disaster.
We're dealing with a real one.
Shocking.
Draft a risk assessment study.
Outline the areas you feel
are at the highest risk.
We'll take it under advisement
for incorporating
into our action plan.
Wait, hold on. Hold on.
Action plan? No.
Do you know
what your action plan is?
You're gonna evacuate
the entire state,
starting with Southern
California, moving up north,
but really work
on the more populated areas.
That's your action plan.
If what you're saying is true,
we don't have
a preemptive action plan
that could respond effectively.
[scoffs] Really shocking!
[Olivia gasps] Let's go.
Go, go. Go.
Come on. You okay?
- [groans]
- Okay, I got you.
- I've got you.
- [winces]
Miss Olivia!
Does it still hurt?
No, it's okay.
It's okay. I'm okay, Ava.
[rumbling]
- [screaming]
- [alarm blaring]
[screams]
- Hold on!
- Don't let me fall!
- I'm not!
- Don't let me fall!
Don't! Don't let me fall!
Come on.
- [grunting]
- [groaning]
- [screams]
- No!
Ava! Ava!
[alarms blaring]
Ava! Ava!
- Clay!
- Ava!
- Thank God!
- Chrissy!
- Chrissy, We have to find her.
- What's wrong?
She fell! She fell,
and I tried to save her!
Hold on.
You're not making any sense!
Talk to me! Stop! Are you okay?!
No, there's a little girl here.
She saw, and then she ran off!
We have to find her!
- There's a child out there?
- Yes!
We have to find her!
Chrissy, please!
Wait. No, no, no. I just
saw a bunch of little kids
with the cops, okay?
Maybe she's with them.
No! Chrissy,
we have to find her now.
The landslide.
Wh-What are you talking about?
Clay? Clay,
what are you talking about?
- No.
- Clay, talk to me.
I don't want to live
the rest of my life scared.
- Clay.
- I ran, because I was afraid,
'cause I almost died.
Clay, look, we didn't, okay?
We made it out. We're alive.
Mom made sure of that.
No, we have to find Ava.
Clay, where are you going?
That's the wrong way!
Ava!
- Are you okay?
- You can relax.
This building's
been tested up to an 8.3.
[panicked chatter]
Oh, my God.
- Oh.
- We're moving.
We're not just moving.
We're floating!
NATASHA: That last quake
must have destroyed
the foundation pillars.
We're going to tip over,
and it's not a matter
of if, but when.
MOLLY: That was
not a 5.9, David.
4-Sight Protocol must have
underestimated the forecast.
The damage from before
must have knocked out
the seismometer sensors,
the infrasonic sensors,
and our consumer data resources.
Okay, that system has been off
ever since
the Hollywood earthquake.
I mean, that 20.0 quake
might be much larger
than we predicted.
We gotta get people
out of this building right now.
Yeah. We got to start
gathering people.
We gotta work floor by floor.
I'll start with the lobby
and work to the third floor.
I'll start on the fourth and
clear the fourth and on up.
- We'll meet on the roof.
- Okay.
It's gonna be hard
to miss a floating building,
but we gotta somehow let
people know that we're alive.
[walls creaking]
[tense music playing]
We're headed toward the bridge.
We're gonna hit it.
I'm going to sweep
for more survivors.
I'll be on radio if you need me.
[coughing]
SVEN: Wait.
You all right?
Look, you've been injured, okay?
You've been injured.
Listen.
It's gonna be all right.
All right, look.
Look, stay with me.
Stay with me. Stay with me.
No. No, no, no, no.
No.
No. No, no.
No.
- Sven.
- Damn it!
Damn it!
- She's gone. She's gone.
- MAN: Over here!
Sven, listen to me.
Listen, okay.
I can't find Chrissy or Clay.
Chrissy and Clay are missing.
Everyone's missing! She's gone!
MAN: Look out! The building!
Now listen to me. Listen.
- [gasps] No.
- Okay, listen.
We have to get out of here.
Look. Look, look.
Look, that building
it's headed straight for us.
We have to get out of here now.
- Yeah.
- Come on.
- Yeah. Okay.
- Come on.
- Come on.
- Okay, okay.
MAN: Get off the bridge!
- Go! Go! Go!
- [screaming]
Go! Go! Go!
[panicked chatter]
Hello? Can anyone hear me?
Hello?
[building creaking]
Hello?
Is anyone there?
MOLLY: Hello?
Molly?
Griffin?
What are you doing here?
The Command Center's gone.
Well, what do you mean, "gone"?
Gone like it's floating
down Third Street right now.
- Oh, my God.
- And we're taking in water.
It's coming in
through the door down there.
Did--Did you see
anybody down there?
No. I thought
it was already evacuated.
No, it's not.
Come on. Follow me.
Wh-Where are we going?
We gotta start clearing floors.
- Come on.
- Where do we bring everybody?
Come on.
Is anyone here?
Sir! Sir, we're here.
We're here to help you.
- [grunts]
- Easy, easy.
- H-He's gone.
- Help me. Help me.
- He's gone.
- No, help me get this off.
- We can save him!
- He's done.
Come on, Griffin!
No! Come on.
Oh, God.
Oh, my God.
Okay, come on.
Let's keep searching.
Hopefully...
we'll find some survivors.
Okay. Let's split up.
I'll go down. You go up.
Cover more ground.
All right, I'll meet you
back here in the stairwell.
Okay.
Come on.
- [groaning]
- Oh, my God.
Come on. Over here. This way.
This is it.
Come on!
We gotta get to the roof.
The roof? [scoffs]
The whole building's
about to lean over.
We'll wait down here
until more help arrives.
If you stay here,
we're all gonna die.
[rumbling]
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Are we okay?
Okay, you're right.
All right.
We need flares and a radio.
Do you have any flares?
We got both.
It's a nice setup
you've got here.
Thank you. Thanks very much
for doing this.
Hey, I thought
when Griffin left ArcStar,
he lost all of this.
These aren't ArcStar's.
They belong to Mr. Richards.
He's a good guy. Happy to help,
especially now.
Search and rescue bird's
all fueled up.
Let's rock and roll.
All right, let's go.
[panicked chatter]
It's not opening!
That's not working!
- Open it!
- Open it!
All right, let's try
the other staircase!
Other staircase!
- Griffin?
- Hey.
You okay?
Yeah, you?
Yeah, I'm okay.
We're blocked
in both directions.
Maybe we can dig
our way out of...
GRIFFIN: I think we're stuck.
The hell, we are.
Base, this is is Louie 23.
We are approaching
the disaster site.
Okay, there's
a heli-pad on the roof,
but we're not
gonna be able to land.
We'll drop in.
Copy that, sir.
Okay.
There's stairs
all the way down,
but the location is
structurally compromised.
Probable flooding
in the lobby, okay?
This is a volatile environment.
Volatile is an understatement.
Jesus.
I've never seen
anything like this before.
GRIFFIN: I think we're stuck.
B-Be careful.
Careful! You pull it
down the wrong way,
it's gonna come crashing down
on the both of us.
Okay, just--just stop.
There's too much of it.
We can't just sit here, Griffin.
If we just pull
more of the rubble out,
we can get up.
We can climb up and over.
- [gasps]
- You want to get out of here
so bad, you don't see the danger
right in front of you.
- Oh, my God.
- Stop. Stop.
Griffin, we have no choice.
You need to pull it
from the higher end
[gasps]
[panting]
[groans]
- Is someone there?
- [moans]
Molly, is that you?
[moans]
Are you hurt?
- Natasha!
- Oh, my arm.
No, no, no. Don't get up. Stay--
- It's broken.
- It's broken?
- [winces]
- Hold on.
Don't move. Don't move.
Okay, just...
Oh, let me see. Let me see.
- S-Stop it.
- Okay, all right.
- Stop.
- Can you get up?
- [groans]
- Okay, okay.
Okay. Easy does it.
Easy does it. You might--
Real nasty knock to the head.
- Come on. Come on.
- [wincing]
NATASHA: Why are
we going back up?
It's all clear below this level,
and we need
to get you out of here.
- You okay?
- Yeah. Yeah, okay.
We don't--We don't
have a choice here.
Well, we--
we have to do it
from the higher end
to make a safe way out.
I bet you didn't think
you'd spend your last
few moments on this Earth
like this, would you?
[chuckles]
Spent next to
an unhinged radical eco-maniac.
Can't think
of a better way to go.
[chuckles] Right.
Well, for what it's worth,
Natasha said Senator Carlson
approved your drilling.
Yeah. Yeah, he did.
Terry is
a majority owner in ArcStar...
through a bunch
of shell companies.
I've sued your company
a hundred times.
- I never knew.
- I know. I know.
Senator is a good guy, though.
That's why we got, uh,
such special attention.
Look, for what it's worth...
I couldn't take it anymore.
I wanted out.
I wanted to help, not hurt.
Why didn't you
say anything before?
[laughs] When?
When was I supposed to?
In court?
That would have been
the death of the company,
the death of 200,000 jobs.
To be honest,
I mean, we were cutting edge.
We were developing
some pretty amazing technology.
My biggest regret...
is that it took
so long to leave.
And I left because of you,
because of what you stand for.
Come on, babe.
All right! Hold here!
Hold!
FEMA office is the 14th floor.
Come on. Come on.
[panicked chatter]
Go, go, go!
You got it. You got it.
- Okay, go left.
- Straight to the roof!
Straight up to the roof!
Use the stairs!
David! What are you
still doing here?
- What do you mean?
- Where's Molly?
She went downstairs
to find other survivors
on the lower floors.
- And she hasn't come back yet?
- No.
I mean, I'm doing
the best I can here.
I found Natasha
when the building tipped over
and the stairwell
started to cave in.
Okay, did you
see anybody else down there?
I didn't see much of anything
after I got cold-cocked
by concrete.
Okay. All right, um...
All right, Terry,
there's a group of survivors
coming upstairs to you now.
You get them off, lift 'em,
take 'em back to base,
and then come right back for us.
This building's
about to fall down on us.
Ronnie, you're gonna clear
the rest of the floors, okay?
Newton and I are
going to go after Molly.
Send any remaining survivors
straight to the roof.
You got it.
Newton, sic.
Good dog. Come on, baby.
Come on! Come on!
Come on! Go! Go!
Keep your heads down! Go!
Go! Go! Heads down!
[Newton barking]
- ERIC: Molly!
- Newton? What?
Molly, where are you?
- Eh...
- We're here!
- Here!
- We're down here.
- Help!
- The rubble's too steep!
We can't climb out on our own.
Here. Here!
Here I am. Grab my hand.
- [yelps]
- That's it. Come on.
[grunting]
- All right. Got it?
- Thank you.
- Come on.
- Yep, I got it.
ERIC: Okay.
Terry, what's your ETA?
Dropping off survivors now.
I'll be back in two minutes.
- Molly.
- Okay, we'll be there.
We'll be right there.
ERIC: This is
the safest place to wait.
Rest of the floors are cleared.
Everyone's accounted for.
This place is
falling apart, though.
All right,
we'll meet you on the roof,
Jennings...
I've got word of an impounded
fourth drilling rig.
Was there some sort
of authorization
from another agency
we weren't made aware of?
Oh, wait. Wait.
Those might be ours.
Your rigs? Who authorized you?
Whoa, whoa, whoa. We were
digging a seismic cloak.
Are you out of your mind?
Have you not seen
what's happening
out there in the city?
Natasha, it worked.
We took the magnitude
of the earthquake
from an 8.7 out to a 6.3.
You don't know what the residual
impact has on the San Andreas.
For all we know,
the seismic cloak
reflected the Rayleigh waves,
which sent them bouncing
onto some brittle tectonic
plates that have yet to shift.
Oh, my God. David.
David, that's it.
A-All the fault lines
running under
Southern California,
connected to
the San Andreas Fault line.
That's why it's bouncing
back and forth so quickly.
I-It isn't just energy.
They're connected!
What? How is that even possible?
All those years of fracking,
that's what triggered
the Hollywood earthquake.
It--All those fault lines
connected to the San Andreas,
it's created a new fault line.
We have to sever it.
What are you talking about?
- Natasha, stand down.
- Stand down?
Where the hell
do you think you are?
We're not back at SOCOM.
You're in my world here.
Okay, look.
Natasha, look.
Look out there.
Do you see all that?
That is all gonna be gone
if we don't do something
about this right now.
All of the fault lines
running underneath us
connected to the San Andreas,
they're just gonna create
an earthquake of 20.0
that's gonna destroy everything
if we don't stop this right now!
The chopper's back.
Let's get the hell out of here.
Okay, time to evac. Let's go.
- David, come on.
- Okay.
Okay, okay. Come on.
Get aboard there.
- You good. You good.
- All right.
Let's go, men! Let's go! Get in!
[wincing]
CLAY: Ava!
- Clay, where are you going?
- Ava!
- That's the wrong way.
- Ava! Ava!
Clay, we are the only ones
out this far!
- Sven and Yolanda are--
- We have to find Ava!
- Clay!
- Guys!
- [grunts]
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, my God.
- [panting]
- [gasps]
- You all right?
- You all right?
- We gotta go.
What are you doing here,
all right?
The whole bridge is on lockdown.
We gotta go now.
We gotta get out of here.
No, there was a little girl.
She was on the bus
with everybody else,
and then she ran off.
Do they have her?
All right.
Officer, this is Albrecht.
I need a 20
on a little girl, name of...
- Ava!
- Ava! Do you have her?
- Is she with you?
- Negative.
The kids
are asking about her, too.
You're saying
there's one more missing?
Yes!
- We can't--Wait!
- We have to go, okay?
That building is headed
straight for us.
I know.
I'm right behind you, okay?
I'm gonna help them
find the kid.
Wait. Chrissy, Chrissy, Chrissy.
[gasps] Please be careful, okay?
Don't do anything too crazy.
Have you met my family?
[chuckles]
[panting]
Damn it.
We're working
from incorrect data.
The quake is gonna be
bigger than we thought.
Our--Our data was wrong.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
How much bigger?
We predicted
a magnitude of 8.7,
but we also miscategorized
the earthquake
that hit Hollywood at a 5.7.
Meaning what?
Meaning we could be looking
at a 20.0 megaquake.
We need to reduce
the stress on the fault lines.
That's impossible.
We just did it.
We just need to figure out
where the fault lines
of the Southern and Northern
California fault lines meet.
Then what?
Then we just need
to find the access point,
and we disrupt it.
What, you mean blow it up?
Do we even know
where that point is?
Maybe, but we need to get
back to the Command Center.
No, the Command Center
is destroyed.
Wait. Drop me off
near Hill Street.
I might have access
to data I can send you.
We're gonna need
some big firepower.
How big?
The MBS 86 GOTA warhead,
Guided Ordnance,
Thermobaric Armament,
exponentially more powerful
than the MOAB or
FOAB high-yield bombs.
We gonna have
to bury it down deep...
close to the access point.
We have a lot of work
ahead of us.
We gotta get started.
- Yep. Yep.
-Natasha, let's go.
Good luck.
Go save your kids!
Thank you.
Take us up!
You got it.
[dramatic music playing]
[gasping]
CLAY: Ava!
Ava! Ava!
Guys, she's over here!
She's over here!
Ava, oh, we have to go.
Come on. We have to go.
Get away! Get away!
No, I'm gonna help you!
I'm here to help you!
No, I'm gonna take you
to your friends.
- We have to go.
- No! You dropped my teacher.
Chrissy, you're gonna
have to take her.
She won't let me touch her.
Okay, Ava, this is Chrissy.
She's my sister.
Sh-She's gonna help you.
She won't drop you.
She's never let me down before.
[Ava yelps]
[panicked gasping]
- We have to go!
- Guys, we gotta go!
- Grab her! Grab her!
- Hurry! Come on!
- We gotta go! We gotta go!
- Go!
Come on!
The building!
The building's coming
down towards the bridge!
Wait, there's Clay,
Chrissy, and Sven!
- Take us down!
- Ronnie!
Get us down!
Copy that! Hang on!
Keep moving!
- [overlapping chatter]
- Go! Go! Go! Go!
- Come on. Run. Come on.
- [blades thrumming]
Come on.
Come on, come on, come on.
- Come on. Come on.
- Go, go, go!
Get on. Get on. In you go.
All right. Hey. [grunts]
- Here. Good.
- Go, go, go!
All right. Let's go, mate!
Let's go! Get in!
We'll never lift off!
We need to drop weight!
Anything that's not tied down,
get rid of it now.
Pass it over!
- I got it.
- Let's go.
Unload!
Come on! Here! Here! Here!
- Come on!
- Almost there!
Come on!
It's almost empty!
You gotta get up here, Sven!
- Come on.
- Come on.
RONNIE: It's still too heavy!
Come on! Up! Up! Up!
We're still too heavy!
We can't lift off!
- Sven! No!
- No!
Up! Up! Up!
Sven!
[sobbing]
- No!
- [gasping]
Everything's gonna be okay.
Natasha came through.
I can probably pinpoint
the faults with this.
It looks there are
actually five points
we need to disrupt.
We're going to need
more ordnance.
Eric, General Guillermin's
on the line.
I briefed him.
I-I know him.
Let me talk to him.
General,
this is Griffin Richards.
Griffin? I thought
I'd be speaking
with Corporal Eric Martin.
Make it quick, Mr. Richards,
because right now,
you are enemy number one
with Senator Carlson.
Good thing I never liked him.
I think we can save California
from falling into the ocean.
There are five points
where the northern and
southern fault lines meet.
If we place
an MBS 86 GOTA warhead
at each of these locations
at a depth of 435 feet,
these detonations should
fracture the fault lines
and reduce the seismic stress.
And as it turns out,
we already have 138 boreholes
drilled to that depth.
All right, Griffin,
I'm authorizing the ordnance.
But if this fails,
I'm holding you
personally accountable.
[dramatic music playing]
Hey.
Oh, my God.
Thank God you guys are okay.
Hey. Hey.
Wait a minute. Where's--
Where's Sven?
He didn't make it.
[sentimental music playing]
PILOT: Delivering ordnance now.
Let's pray this works.
Number three in place.
Number four in place.
[emergency dispatch chatter]
That's four out of five.
The last one
needs to be placed
under the ocean floor
by Long Beach.
How are we
supposed to do that?
I-I need these bombs
at a depth of 435 feet.
Oil rigs!
I grew up in Long Beach.
They're everywhere.
Yeah, okay. Let me find some.
MOLLY: We have a solution.
Use the oil rigs.
One's up this hill.
MOLLY: You need
to take apart the oil rig
and drop the bomb
down the drill shaft.
PILOT: Copy.
Taking them apart now.
All right, ordinance
is down the hatch.
That should do it.
NATASHA: Molly,
your team is currently
over the widest part
of the fault lines.
That area could cave in
any second.
Hey! Hey!
We gotta get everybody
in the air right now!
I want everybody airlifted
out of here first.
Once you're in the air
and out of the blast zone,
we can then start the countdown.
Will that give us enough time?
GRIFFIN: All aboard! Come on!
- Get aboard!
- We're good! Go!
Keep the rotors turning!
Let's get up!
Come on, let's go.
[rumbling]
MOLLY: Get those people
out of here! Go!
The fault line
is starting to rupture!
Run!
To the police car!
Come on!
Go, honey!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Go! Go! Go!
- Dad, go!
- Drive! Drive! Drive!
Go! Drive!
The GOTAs, the earthquake,
it's gonna set them off.
We're not gonna
have time for the countdown.
Honey, please!
- Go!
- [panting]
Oh, my God!
[tires squealing]
[rubble crashing]
[all panting]
- It worked.
- It worked.
It worked. It worked.
Yeah.
You two okay?
Is it over?
Define "over."
- [both laugh]
- [chuckles]
[sirens blaring]
[dramatic music playing]
City's a mess.
Could have been worse.
NATASHA: It's going
to get more difficult.
Senator Carlson is
trying to shut you down.
What's your experience with him?
Political opportunist.
I mean, he was
a complete climate denier
when it got him votes,
but totally swung
in the opposite direction
when it got him even more votes.
GRIFFIN: It's not votes.
It's money and power,
and he won't stop
'til he has 'em both.
But if we stick together,
he can't buy us, right?
- Right.
- Absolutely, Mom.
We're going to need
a new Command Center
up and running ASAP.
How do we do that?
Redundancy.
Before I came onboard,
I invested a lot
in the Command Center.
My team built a prototype
at my estate in North Carolina.
You took my designs and
developed them without me?
I had to make sure it worked.
David helped.
Well, it was more conceptual
than practical.
Careful. My sources tell me
there's been an unseasonable
cold snap in the Carolinas.
That's FEMA Region 4.
So we'll be
someone else's headache?
Don't think you're gonna
get rid of me that easily.
I'm always watching.
Good. We need to keep in touch.
We're going to keep an eye
on the aftershocks in Northern
and Southern California,
because I-I do have a theory.
The mantle of the Earth
is malleable.
It's too hot to retain
any seismic strain,
and these quakes are showing
something very different.
What's that?
Well, the mantle of the Earth
is retaining
the seismic strain,
which means it's getting cooler.
We have more tests to run
on that theory first.
Let's stay in touch, then.
What do you think?
You want to continue?
I guess I got a whole car ride
to a plane ride to a plane ride
back east to think about it.
Yeah. We can talk along the way.
Okay.
[dramatic music playing]
[music fades]
CLAY: Hey, Dad...
You know, I--
I think you're right.
Uh, I kind of need
to talk to somebody.
These past few days,
they've been...
a lot.
Yeah.
I'm always here if--
if you want to talk.
No. Sorry.
I-I meant I was wondering if
I could talk to your therapist.
I mean, you seem to think she's
doing a pretty good job, so...
Yeah, okay.
Yeah, no, absolutely.
For sure. Um, I can
certainly recommend her.
Cool. Just as long
as I don't have to sit through
any more of these
awkward father-son talks.
[laughs]
[both laughing]
We haven't even started.
Oh, God.
[laughs]
[mellow music playing]
[instrumental playing]
