- Hi.
- Hi.
- That's mine, you know.
Um...
Do you like candy?
[wind blowing]
What's your name?
- James.
What's yours?
- Sam.
- That's a boy's name.
- No, it isn't.
It's short for Samantha.
That's what my dad
called me. Sam.
- Oh.
- Yeah.
I used to go hunting
with him all the time.
I know how to shoot
guns, you know.
I killed a deer before.
And one time I got a raccoon
and my dad made a hat for me,
like Davy Pocket.
- I'm not supposed
to shoot guns.
- Well, how are you
supposed to hunt
if you can't shoot guns?
- I've never hunted before.
- How do you get your
dinner meat, then?
- My mom would go
to the grocery store
and some guy would
hand it to her.
- Oh.
Well, my dad showed me
how to make animals ready
so you can get all
the meat out of them.
All you have to do
is find some string,
hang 'em up on a tree
or something high up
so you can get
all the blood out.
- Sounds gross.
- Well, that's how
you're supposed to do it.
- And you have to get a
really sharp knife to-
- I'm not supposed
to use knives.
- [Sam] Well, my dad let me.
I'll show you.
- Okay.
- Hey, do you wanna
see something?
- What is it?
- Just come on. It's a surprise.
[footsteps clambering]
- Do you live in that house?
- No, that's my friend's house.
I live on the other
side of the road.
- You got a friend?
- Well, she's my pretend friend.
[soft music playing]
Sometimes I make people
up because, um...
Um...
I...
I don't really have any
real friends anymore.
- Yeah. I don't either, really.
- But with pretend friends,
they always wanna play
whatever games I want,
and they don't get mad
or tell on me if I cheat.
- Dave would cheat.
- Who's Dave?
- My mom's boyfriend.
He would cheat.
My mom would get so mad.
- Was it card
games? I bet it was.
Lots of people
cheat at card games.
- I don't know.
I never saw him play any
games except for one.
Kitchen boxing. That's
what I would call it.
He played that game a lot.
- Did Dave cheat at that too?
- Probably. He was the
winner all the time.
- Have you ever
been to the movies?
I went one time with my dad
and I ate so much candy
that I got a bellyache
and I throwed up.
But my dad wasn't mad.
- My mom never lets me get candy
because she says my
teeth will fall out.
- From candy?
Well, she fibbed
because I just saw you eat
a whole entire candy bar
and I didn't see
any teeth fall out.
- I would go to the
dentist, so that's why.
- When Dave and her started
being boyfriend and girlfriend,
we never got to go anymore.
- To the dentist?
- No! To the movies.
- Oh.
Well, guess what?
- What?
- You gotta close your eyes.
- Why?
- Just close them.
- [James] Okay.
- And no peeking.
[soft music]
And open them.
Ta-da!
- [James] Oh, cool!
- Come on! Let's
go check it out.
[footsteps clambering]
Two tickets, please.
Thank you.
Come on! Let's go.
- Are you sure there
aren't ghosts in there?
- What are you, a chicken?
- Come on. Let's go inside.
- Okay.
- Come on. Come on.
[footsteps padding]
After you.
I bet you never had
the whole movies
to yourself before, huh?
And it's all just for us.
- People used to
watch movies here?
- Yeah.
There's some
newspaper on the wall
with a picture of
some army guys here.
Maybe all these houses are where
the army guys used to live.
But where did they all go?
- Maybe, um...
The predizent wanted
them to go fight bad guys
and they all had to leave.
- Probably.
[sighs]
I wish we had candy.
- Well...
Pick a hand.
- This one.
- Wrong! [laughs]
- That's cheating.
- Pick again.
- This one.
- [laughs] I tricked you.
I was just kidding. Here you go.
Oh, I have to show you
something. Come on.
[footsteps clambering]
Sit right there.
- What are you doing?
[Sam grunts]
Agh!
Agh, geez!
- You okay?
- Yeah.
- Yeah. That light's
pretty strong, huh?
- Yeah.
- You know what I
like to do for fun?
- What?
- Hi, I'm a little rabbit and
I'm looking for some food.
Do you know where it is?
- Caw!
- Hi. Have you seen any
rabbits around here?
I'm really hungry.
- Yes. I think there
was one this way.
Follow me.
- Okay. Thank you.
Can you just like
soar around the sky?
[uplifting music playing]
[fire crackling]
- You caught that?
- Yeah.
- [James] How?
- You can't catch them
with your hands, silly.
You have to make a little
trap and put some food in it
and when they go to
eat the food, snap.
- And you eat them?
- Mm-hm.
It's like chicken,
but little gamey.
- But it's not chicken.
- Well, why are chickens okay
to eat, but squirrels aren't?
- Because squirrels
have germs and stuff.
- Well, we don't have
chicken. We have squirrel.
Come on. Just try it.
Here's a little piece.
Look, I'll do it with you. Okay?
- Are you sure
I'm not gonna die?
- Yes. Now come on.
Okay. On the count of three.
One.
Two.
Three.
See?
- Well, I like chicken better.
Sam?
- Yeah?
- [James] Do you
ever get scared?
- Yeah, sometimes. Do you?
- Yeah.
What are you scared of?
- Well...
I used to be scared of monsters.
- Monsters aren't real.
My dad told me that.
- [James] I know.
Just sometimes I
wish I still was.
- Why?
- Because the things that
I'm scared of right now
are a lot scarier than monsters.
I don't know if they're
real or fake or invisible
or if they're just
grown-up things.
- Maybe it's not grown-up
things you're scared of.
Maybe it's getting grown up.
- What are you scared of?
- Being alone.
- But we're not alone.
- Look there!
See how the grass
is all squished?
That's 'cause rabbits and
stuff run over and squish it.
So, you're gonna take
some of this metal string
and you're gonna
wanna twist it up good
and make a hanger man's knot.
And then you have to wrap the
other end around the stick
as tight as you can.
Then you gotta jam the
stick into the ground
and put your loop right here.
- But can't they
get out of that?
- No, silly. Just watch.
I am a little rabbit looking
for some yummy carrots.
So I'm gonna go
right through here.
And bam!
They get strangled and
they can't get out.
Now you try.
["Find Myself in
You" by Max Bienert]
The vultures circle over me
But now we dance
with two left feet
I stumble into you
The fallout left
me in the street
Like a bag of
last week's meat
I find myself in you
And so do you
I don't want to
spend today alone
Pull me from the pits
And take me home
- [James] You had an
underground house?
- Yeah. My dad built it for me.
I called it my
underground house.
But my dad said it's called...
A bonker.
He said if anything
bad were to happen,
I was supposed to go in
there and close the door
and he'd meet me there.
- So that's where you
and your dad stayed?
[somber music playing]
- Just me.
I kept watching for him
to come, but he never did.
But after a lot of days,
I finally came out and
started looking for him.
And I walked and walked.
And that's how I got to here.
Where were you?
Did your mom build
you a bonker too?
- No.
I ran up a hill
and climbed a tree.
- What about your mom and Dave?
- I wasn't with them
when it happened.
- Why not?
- Because I runned away.
- You runned away from it?
- No. I runned away from home.
- Wait. Why would you
run away from your house?
- Because I was scared.
- Of monsters?
- No.
Look, I'm tired now.
Can we just go to sleep?
[footsteps rustling]
- Um...
Okay.
[fire crackling]
- No!
No, no, no.
Somebody please help.
Somebody please help.
Somebody help.
- James!
James! Hey, wake up.
You were having a bad dream.
- Ah. But I...
Oh, gosh.
It was so scary. I was with
my mom and she was drowning.
- It's okay. It
was just a dream.
It wasn't real.
- But...
- Shh.
It's okay. You're okay.
Here. Lay down, okay?
See? Watch.
- What was that for?
- There. I fighted all
the scary dreams away.
- Oh, okay.
Sam?
- Yeah?
- Do you know any sleepy songs?
- [Sam] You mean
like a lullerby?
- Yeah, one of those.
- My dad sang one to me
before I was going to bed.
It's the only one I know, but
I remember it was my favorite.
- Can I hear it?
- Yeah. I can try.
There's a star in the
sky and her name is July
May is her sister
They fly through the night
Playing with rainbows
They dance and they swoon
With kisses from angels
And off they flew
I asked God who's prettier
The stars or the moon
He told me there's nothing
more beautiful than you
[birds chirping]
Do you wanna be my boyfriend?
- [James] Um, no.
- Yes, you do.
- Fine. What do I have to do?
- Well, you have to kiss me.
- Ew. No, I'm not kissing you.
- Well, you're my boyfriend.
So you have to kiss me then.
- Then I don't wanna
be your boyfriend.
- No, it's too late.
You already said.
- But my mom and her
boyfriend never kissed.
Well, that's 'cause
they're grown up,
and grown-ups do other
things, like wrestle.
- Well, I'm not kissing you.
- Well, okay.
[suspenseful strings playing]
Then I'm gonna kiss you.
- No, you're not.
- Yes, I am.
You're my boyfriend, so
I'm going to kiss you.
Come here!
Get over here.
[playful music playing]
- How much longer? You're
making my hands sweaty.
- We're almost there.
- Gosh, you're a
bossy girlfriend.
- That's how girlfriends are
supposed to be. I saw it on TV.
The girlfriends are bossy
and then the boyfriends
make funny faces
and then all the people laugh.
- Huh?
- See? Like that.
- [James] Like what?
- Like that look that
you just gave me, like...
- Whatever.
You were like, "Oh, James,
do this. Oh, James, do that.
Oh, James, kiss me."
- Yeah, and then
you were like...
[both giggling]
See? We can be on TV together.
[water rushing]
Whatcha making?
- It's a surprise.
- A surprise for me?
- Well, a surprise for us.
- Like we have to share it?
- Oh, fine. A surprise for you.
- Aww, Jamesy.
- What?
- I said Jamesy.
That's your nickname.
I made it up for you.
You know, like girlfriend
and boyfriends do.
Sometimes they call each
other honey or baby.
You're not a baby,
so I don't know why they
call each other that.
Do you know this whole thing
used to be covered up in water?
- [James] How?
- [Sam] Because of all the rain.
Remember when it
rained all the time
and they said that the
oceans were getting too big?
I bet it covered up everything,
even our house and
all the other houses.
- That's probably why all
the windows are broken.
- [Sam] Probably.
I remember in my old home,
it looked like a humongous
puddle everywhere.
I even saw a car floating
like it was a boat.
- And done.
- Aww, Jamesy, it's a hat.
- No, it's a boat.
- Oh, yeah! I've
seen that before.
Can I make one for you?
- Sure.
I'll show you.
[hopeful music playing]
Hold this.
[hopeful music continues]
[music turns ominous]
- James, don't!
- Ow! What was that for?
- You can't drink this water.
It's got poisons in it.
- I'm sorry. Okay?
I didn't know.
- Are you stupid? You wanna die?
You can't...
You can't do that.
Everything,
everybody... [sobbing]
Just went away.
I don't want you to go away.
- I'm sorry. Okay?
I'm not going away. I promise.
[night insects chirping]
My mom had this old photo
that she kept inside
of her drawer.
I guess she didn't wanna lose it
because it was a photo
of her and my dad.
She would look at
it and tell me,
"This, this is what
love looks like."
But one day Dave saw her
and started hitting
her on the head.
Dave saw me and
tried to chase me.
So that's why I
runned away from home.
[fire crackling]
- Did you ever love
somebody before?
- Yeah, my mom, before she...
- No, no.
I don't mean like your
mom. Not like that.
I mean like love somebody
like they do in stories.
- Like fairytale stories?
- Yeah, like the ones
my dad used to tell me
that always go once upon a time
and there's a prince and
he has to find the princess
so that he can fall
in love with her.
- Well, I'm not a prince,
so I wouldn't know how to.
- But what if it just happens
and you didn't do nothing?
- Then the prince
wouldn't slay the dragon
or fight those bad men and
it wouldn't be a fairy tale.
- Do you think it's just
for princes and princesses?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, maybe.
Okay. Nighty night, Jamesy.
[sighs]
[soft music continues]
[wagon wheels rolling]
[footsteps crunching]
- What's wrong?
- I'm in love with you.
- What?
- I'm in love with you.
- Nuh-uh.
- Yes, huh.
- Are you sure?
Love is just for fairy tales.
- No, it isn't.
It's for everybody.
Even you and me.
My dad told me what it's like
and said one day I'd
get fallen in love.
And I didn't even mean to.
I just falled in
love on accident.
And I know that you're
in love with me too.
- No, you're silly.
- No, you're silly.
- Mm.
Oh, oh, gross.
I'm gonna get you!
[Sam laughing]
[footsteps clambering]
- Nothing in here.
Maybe in that room.
Hey, what's this?
- I don't know.
My mom used to
have one of these,
but she never really
played with it.
- Well, what is it?
- I don't know.
I think you're supposed
to press this button.
[camera clicks]
Ah, geez. I think I'm blinded.
[playful music playing]
- Oh, it's a flashy light.
You know, like the
ones that the boats use
if they're gonna sink so that
people can come save them.
- [James] Then why would
my mom have one of these?
- Maybe she used to drive boats.
What's this little
paper thing for?
- It looks like-
- It looks like you.
- Wait a minute.
Sam, this isn't a flashy light.
It's a camera.
- Oh, neat. I never saw
one like this before.
Aww. I wanted to keep that.
- No. I look like a doofus.
- No, you don't.
- Please, Jamesy? Pretty please?
- Fine. But you
can't make fun of me.
Promise?
- Pinky promise.
Oh, my. Look how
handsome my Jamesy is.
And I can see him
any time I want.
- You know what?
Let me just take another one
so I don't look like a dummy.
- No, no.
Let's take one
together, me and you.
- Fine. But how do we do that?
- Like this.
- Oh, yeah, I
remember. A Ralphie.
- A Ralphie?
No, silly. A stealthy.
- Oh.
- Come on, Jamesy. I
know the perfect place.
Come on.
[soft music playing]
[footsteps thudding]
Give me your hand.
- Everything looks so small.
Why did you wanna
take it up here?
- Because you can
see everything.
All of our home.
I never got a picture
of our old home.
Sometimes I even forget
what it looks like.
I don't want to forget
what this look like
'cause it's our home.
- Ready?
- Yeah, but you
have to say cheese.
- Okay.
Say cheese.
[camera clicks]
- Is it working?
- Mm-hm.
I think this is what my
mom was talking about.
- About what?
- What love looks like.
- I knew it.
- Don't tell anybody.
- There's nobody here to tell.
["Come Home With
You" by Max Bienert]
You said it once
You said it twice
I didn't hear
You whispered in my ear
Lazy Sunday afternoon
At the table set for two
We cheers to the new
I follow closely
where you lead
You don't look back
You're blinded to the past
But if you look
in front of you
I'm right here
to share the view
And I'll come
I'll come home with you
Tell me that you're
never going to leave me
Tell me that you'll
stay just one more time
You say you feel loved
And I believe it
We both think it's
better just to try
I held your hand
You held it back
And held on tight
I'm falling
through the floor
I give all myself to you
That's what you're
supposed to do
When you're in love
I'm at a loss
for what to say
You meet my eyes
I pry at drifting words
Trim the sides
and get the glue
Let's build something
bright and new
And I'll come
I'll come home with you
Tell me that you're
never going to leave me
Tell me that you'll
stay just one more time
You say you feel
loved and I believe it
We both think it's
better just to try
Tell me that you made
it just to keep it
Tell me fleeting
love is not for you
You say I'm the one
and I believe it
You've just got to
show me what to do
We just gotta find more.
There's something. We
just have to find it.
I know where there's water.
- Where?
- In my underground house.
There's a bunch of it.
My dad made sure there was
enough to last for years.
And there's food too.
- How far is it?
- Really far.
- Well, how do we
get it back here?
- We can't.
[somber music playing]
[water trickling]
[backpacks thud]
[melancholy music playing]
[melancholy music continues]
- [James] Are you
ready to say goodbye
to your pretend friends?
- I did that already,
the day I met you.
[adventurous music playing]
[music fades]
[grass crunching]
- Hey, Sam, what's that
over there?
Is that a car?
- It is!
Maybe we can sleep in there.
Come on!
- Sam! It's perfect!
[tailgate slams]
Agh!
- What is it?
[fire crackling]
Happy you got your chicken?
- Mm-hm.
Here. You have some.
It tastes like squirrel, but...
A little less gamery.
[both laughing]
I miss it already.
- Miss what?
- Home.
- Jamesy, it's just a house.
You and me, we made it our home.
That's what my dad
would've told me.
I think everywhere
can be our home
if both of us are there.
So tonight we have a
luxurious car home.
And tomorrow, maybe a cave home.
And the next day, a tree home.
- It's scary here at night.
- Yeah.
You've gotta be really careful,
or another chicken
monster might get ya!
Cluck, cluck,
cluck, cluck, cluck.
- I wasn't scared.
- You screamed
like a girly girl.
- Because that was a quick
scare. There's a difference.
- I know, Jamesy.
You're a big, brave boy.
- I hope our bonker home
still has candy in it.
- Mm-hm.
If I didn't eat
all of it already.
[both laughing]
[birds chirping]
[grass rustling]
- Hey, Sam, are those
eagles in the sky?
- No, I think they're
just vultures.
You see how they're like
flying around in circles?
That's 'cause they're
looking for dead animals
to eat for breakfast.
[soft rattling]
- Hey, Sam, what's that sound?
[rattling intensifies]
[suspenseful music fades in]
- James, stop!
Don't move.
[suspenseful music builds]
Don't move.
[rattling echoes]
Oh my gosh, James.
Oh my gosh.
Okay, okay, okay. Breathe.
[James screaming]
Breathe, breathe, breathe. It's
gonna be okay, Jamesy, okay?
Okay. You just need to
stay calmed down, okay?
Please take a deep
breath for me, please.
Come on. Okay.
You're gonna be okay.
It's gonna be okay.
You just need to
stay calmed down.
Okay. Where is it?
Let me see. Let me see.
Okay.
We gotta find somewhere
for you to lay down. Okay?
Okay. Come on.
Okay. Come on.
Come on. Come on.
Come on. It's okay.
I gotcha. It's okay.
You're gonna be okay, okay?
[James whimpering]
- It hurts!
- The truck is right there.
We're only a couple
feet from it. Okay?
Hey, up.
[James whimpering]
- Ow!
[whimpering and panting]
- Can I see?
[James whimpering and panting]
- Ow!
It hurts.
Ow!
[somber music playing]
Am I gonna die? I
think I'm gonna die.
- You're not gonna die. Okay?
You're gonna be okay.
You just need to stay
calmed down. Okay?
My dad got bit once and the
doctors gave him an antivenom.
I think it started with a C.
I gotta go get you
some of that medicine.
- Sam, please don't
leave me, please!
- I know, but I'm gonna be
as quick as I can. Okay?
I promise. Okay?
You just need to stay here,
laying down, as calm as you can.
- [James] It hurts!
- I know. I know, okay?
And I'm sorry. Okay?
Just stay right here. Okay?
You just gotta be brave, okay?
Be brave.
I love you.
Jamesy...
[somber music continues]
[grunts]
[sobbing]
Why?
Why?
[continues sobbing]
[determined music fading in]
[panting]
[intense music playing]
[intense music continues]
[footsteps thudding]
[vials clattering]
[drawer sliding]
[bottles rattling]
Yes!
[drawer sliding]
[intense music continues]
No!
No, no, no, no.
Please wake. Please
wake up, Jamesy.
Jamesy, wake up.
[plastic crinkling]
[somber music playing]
Come on, Jamesy.
Wake up, please.
Wake up. Wake up.
Jamesy, wake up.
Wake up, please.
Come on, Jamesy.
You promised me.
You made me a promise.
Please wake up.
Wake up. Wake up.
Come on, James.
You promised me you wouldn't.
Wake up. Please wake up.
Please wake up.
Please. Please wake up.
Liar! Liar!
You promised me.
You promised me you wouldn't.
You promised me.
[sobbing]
Come on. Please wake up.
Wake up.
I can't do this without you.
I love you, Jamesy. Wake up now.
Don't leave me.
[footsteps approaching]
- Samantha?
Hi, I'm Dr. Holland.
Would you mind if I asked
you just a few questions?
Do you think that would be okay?
I can only imagine
how overwhelming
this must be for you,
so we can go as slow or
as fast as you'd like.
Are you comfortable?
Can I get you anything
before we start?
Okay.
But if you change your mind
and you need anything at all,
or if you just
wanna take a break,
you just let me know
and we can do that.
Okay?
We are here to help in
any capacity that we can.
That's what we do here.
Everyone at some
point or another
has been in the
same exact position
that you were when we found you.
Believe me, I
understand how you feel
and I know it's natural for
you to be a bit leery at first.
But I promise you
this is a safe space.
Okay.
I think I actually wanna go
back to the very beginning
when you had those...
[knocks on door]
Yes. Come in.
- I hope I'm not
interrupting anything.
Samantha, there's someone
here who wanted to see you.
- Mommy!
- Hi!
Come up here. Ready?
Hi, princess.
Did you and Daddy
have a good nap?
- Yes.
- Yeah?
- Yes.
And look! We also
got some candy.
- Some candy?
Well, you better tell
Daddy not to eat them all.
[Dr. Holland laughs]
- Daddy, don't eat them all.
- Okay. I'll keep them safe.
- Did you get some good sleep?
- A little bit. But someone
kept taking all of the covers.
- Oh, did she?
- Well, this is wonderful.
We have the whole
family with us.
- Mommy, who's that girl?
- This is Dr. Holland.
- And tell me, what is
your name, little girl?
- Marianna.
- You are such a lucky girl
to have such a nice name.
Well...
Shall we begin?
["Come Home With
You" by Max Bienert]
Tell me that you're
never going to leave me
Tell me that you'll
stay just one more time
You say you feel
loved and I believe it
We both think it's
better just to try
Tell me that you made
it just to keep it
- Okay, so before this
movie starts, everybody,
I just need everybody to
lower down their phones,
turn them on silent
mode or whatever,
whatever you have on your phone,
but just make sure to silence
them because here's the movie.
[uplifting music playing]
Hi. My name is Kayden
Tokarski and I'm 11 years old.
- Hi. My name's Byron
McCray and I'm 10 years old.
- And we play Sam and...
- James.
- I knew that I could
be the role of Sam
'cause she is just this
brave, strong girl.
And she's basically
lost everything,
especially her father,
who basically taught
her how to survive.
The hardest part is
trying to be the character
and feel what Sam is feeling
'cause she has so many
different emotions.
When she looks out on
everything that is gone
and how much she has lost,
she just realized, I
can't hold it in for long.
And that's when she breaks down
and just can't hold it in
and her heart just drops.
- You wanna talk about James?
- He's shy. Eight years old.
A quiet character. Does
not like to talk much.
So the character is
basically just like me.
- One day, she comes along
this boy named James.
She's like, what? There's
actually a person alive.
To actually see somebody,
we're speechless
'cause we thought that
we were just all alone.
They have like this connection.
They start noticing that they
have feelings for each other.
I enjoyed it so
much and I was like,
I don't wanna stop filming
because this is
something that I wanna do
for a very long time.
Well...
Oh, we gotta go back
on set. So bye, guys.
Ooh, she's calling to us.
- Hey, guys. What's going on?
Welcome back to my
YouTube channel.
- It's Kayden!
- It's Kayden and B-Roll.
So we're balancing
the Steadicam.
This is our Steadicam op, Abood.
- Nobody cares.
- He's actually homeless.
We found him in front
of a McDonald's.
He said, "Will
Steadicam for food."
[group laughing]
- [Kayden] First day
filming was so awesome.
[upbeat music]
- Marker.
- Come on! Come on!
Go, go, go, go!
[shouting cheers]
[water rushing]
- No, James! Don't!
- Cut. Great, guys.
And whenever you turn around,
I want you to still have
that happy expression
and then, "Oh, no."
- James, don't!
- Ow! What'd you do that for?
- What are you
trying to do? Huh?
Are you stupid? You wanna die?
You can't...
You can't do that!
[sobbing]
- One more time.
Exactly like that,
just even softer.
Even softer and slower. Okay?
And scoop him up. When you
go to hug him, scoop him.
Great job, guys.
Okay. Run out of frame.
- Lovely.
- Yeah, that's cool.
- [Kayden] You didn't
follow me back.
- [Jacob] Oh, dang.
Oh, guys, we got
some heat over here.
Got some heat between these two.
- I follow you. You're
not even like my friend.
- Got some heat.
- Are you gonna take that?
- Go ahead.
- You're lucky I don't push
you in the water, Kayden.
- No, I'm not going to.
Like look at him
against me, like...
- David versus Goliath.
- [Justin] Kayden and Brandin.
- Follow me.
We're gonna show
you guys something
that looks exactly like Brandin.
Say hello to my friend
Brandin. Take that.
- Love, hate.
- Called payback.
- You guys are so good
that you only have one
day to know these lines.
- I've seen better.
- I've seen better cameramen.
- Oh!
- You say that every time.
Get original.
- No.
- [Brandin] Yes, you do.
- No.
- Yes, you do.
- No.
- Brandin.
- [Brandin] You
said that yesterday.
- No, Brandin.
- You said that yesterday.
- No, I didn't.
- Yes, you did.
- No, I didn't.
- Why are you lying?
Oh, now you're a liar.
[Kayden laughs]
- [Justin] Kayden loves Brandin.
Loves getting on his nerves.
- Brandin's crazy, all
right. We already know that.
- [Jacob] What are you
feeling like today?
- Bad because that guy's here.
- Okay.
- You.
You should get
Brandin's coverage.
He'll be like, "Hey, y'all.
I like to do-si-do
and lasso horses."
Brandin!
Right, Brandin? Guys...
You have such a
big ego, Brandin.
- [Justin] And
Brandin loves Kayden,
loves getting on her nerves.
- Me and Kayden had a truce
and then she broke it.
- No, we didn't. He
started the fight.
We were in the pool
and he tossed me in.
- And then we shook
hands. Remember?
- No, no, no, no, no.
- Yeah.
- I pushed him first and
then he went like this.
And then he was
playing with Justin
and they're like
[indistinct whispering],
but they were
actually whispering.
I don't know. Long story.
- [Justin] They were so funny
because they're so alike.
[rhythmic clapping]
- Oh, you know that one?
- [Justin] Beneath all of that,
they loved each other, though
they would never admit it.
Love, hate.
- [Mikyla] Five,
six, seven, eight.
[off-key piano notes playing]
One, two, uh.
Hey! Hey!
Oh! [laughing]
- Keep going.
- But you kind of did a
little laugh, which was nice.
Like you were just kind of
like, "I was just kidding."
And Byron, you'll start
kind of having a nightmare.
So its like, "No!"
[bell dings]
You start kind of like
tossing and turning.
You guys wanna try that?
- Yeah.
- All right, let's do it.
- Oh, it's so hot.
- It's the beginning.
- [Mikyla] 18 Charlie,
take one. Marker.
- [Justin] How
does that look, B?
- [Brandin] Looks great.
[Kayden laughing]
- [Kayden] Justin, the camera's
focused on your rear end.
- That always happens.
- The camera adds 10 pounds.
- It does?
- [Mikyla] Mark, soft sticks.
- That's great, Kayden. Okay.
So Byron,
let's get a little bit more
breathing room in your lines.
- Run for your lives!
Run for your lives!
- Are you videotaping me?
- What?
- Get outta here.
- [Justin] Kayden.
Where do I begin?
[upbeat music]
- Oh, hey, guys. I
didn't see you there.
So today I'm gonna
be teaching you,
well, showing you what
our onset workout is
when we're in the wilderness.
- [James] Such a personality.
- Eight. And get up.
Oh my...
Don't show people
that I did that.
That is onset workout. Bye.
Where do you picture yourself
in five years? [laughing]
I just kidding.
That's not how I actually
talk. I'm all American.
I feel faint.
Take whatever.
- [Justin] She's so
funny and she knows it.
- Remember this?
Hey, guys, I didn't see
you there. Remember this?
See, I can't be
behind the scenes
because I make the
audience laugh.
No, it's called being
dramatic for documentary.
Laugh, laugh, laugh.
Byron, I'm just kidding.
- [Justin] Something Kayden did
that I thought was just
so funny and so familiar,
she would say something
and immediately after it,
"No, I'm just kidding."
- No, I just kidding.
No, I just kidding.
I'm just kidding.
No, I'm just kidding.
No, I'm just kidding.
I'm just kidding.
Ha, ha, ha. No,
I'm just kidding.
When are we going to get rid
of Abood? No, I'm just kidding.
- [Justin] Because you don't
wanna hurt someone's feelings,
so it's like very
immediately afterwards.
No, I'm just kidding.
- My mom...
- No, I'm just kidding.
- [Justin] That
was really funny.
- My stomach makes these like
little petite farty noises
and I'm laughing inside my head.
I'm like, "Don't blow
it. Don't blow it."
I don't want Justin
to have to say cut
and then we have to go again.
We just cut it out. Cut it out.
Peace.
- [Justin] Just her as a person,
she's really something else.
Beyond that, though, her
just enthusiasm to film
and her excitement
to be an actor
and just to embrace
that character
and how serious she took it,
and it was just really,
really cool to see that.
- I was literally
here, seriously.
[playful music]
And I was tricked.
- [Justin] Byron.
- Is that dog poop?
Clean up your dog.
If you let your dog
do business out here,
at least clean it up.
People can step in that.
Why is this greasy?
What is this?
It looks like mayonnaise.
- [Justin] He's a 10-year-old
boy in every sense.
[Byron gargling]
[Byron spitting]
And he's so genuine about it.
Getting into mischief,
you know, exploring.
It was cool just
to watch him work
and to watch him not work.
But there was also
like part of him
that was a little bit not
your typical 10-year-old boy.
Like he was kind of sensitive.
- Let me also give
y'all a secret.
He acts hard. He's really not.
He is a softie, as you could
tell when I get on him.
- [Justin] If he wasn't acting,
he was sleeping.
[soft lullaby music playing]
Byron, you good? You awake?
- Yes.
- Just resting his eyes.
- He can sleep anywhere.
- Byron, if you wake up,
you will get
Hershey's chocolate.
- Where is it?
- [Justin] He's like, "I
want to see it first."
- Go away.
- [Justin] And when he wasn't
sleeping, he was dancing.
[electronic dance music playing]
[playful music playing]
- 24, take one. Marker.
And action!
Great take, guys.
Bogie in the background.
[playful music continues]
Person.
Let's cut. We got a
bogie, so let's cut.
- Bogie.
- Bogie.
And we got...
Let's hold for a moment.
We still have a bogie, so...
And action.
All right. All right.
- [Producer] We have to
figure out a way to shoot it
without bogie and
without being repetitive
in terms of shots.
- Right now, this
is totally clear.
Let's very quickly
come over here.
Start walking this way
while we're clear, okay?
Let's cover their mics.
- Is there audio or no?
- [Justin] Yeah, there is audio.
And action!
- Well, okay. Then
I'm gonna kiss you.
- No, you're not.
- Yes, I am.
- No.
Stop! Don't!
- You're my boyfriend,
so I'm going to kiss you!
- No, you're not.
Ew, gross!
- Come here!
Get over here!
- Cool. Cut.
Great job, guys. You
got lucky on that one.
Jacob, you got audio
on that, right?
- This one? No.
- Ugh.
- [Jacob] But they were running.
- So can we get this
again with audio?
- Clear.
- All right.
Let's get ready to go, guys.
- [Kayden] We're doing it again?
- Yeah. Byron, give a
nice pause there, okay?
Why would they stop?
- [Brandin] To give us like
a natural break in the...
- I'm just thinking they
stopped in the last one,
so I don't want it
to be walking, stop.
Walking, stop.
So it's not uncommon
on productions
for a director and
director of photography
to have a disagreement at times.
We've filmed together so
much, we don't always agree.
We often disagree.
- [Brandin] Cool.
Let's just reset.
- [Justin] Why did you do that?
- [Brandin] 'Cause we
already got that shot.
- Yeah, but I wanted
to get that again.
But don't cut unless
I say cut, please.
No, that's not what
I was picturing.
They're just sitting there.
- It's Kayden's walking, right?
- No, no one's walking.
They're just sitting.
They're just sitting
next to each other.
- Okay. Can we get both?
- They just have to run
around a little faster.
- Yeah, that's easy for me.
- I'd rather them
walk a little slower.
- [Kayden] Yeah,
we'll walk slower.
- Should we try it again?
- Are we rolling it or
are we not rolling it?
- Yes, we're rolling it.
- Me and Justin have
a funny dynamic.
When the script is there, it's
very easy for us to sync up,
picking out the shots
and imagining them.
You might imagine it
a little bit different
when we're shot listing.
And I think that's where some
of the confusion comes in
and that's when me and him
have creative differences
and that's when things don't
go as smoothly as they should
or when me and him
bicker about this or that
or it should be shot this way
or we don't have enough
time to do it that way.
It's like when me and
Justin are fighting,
it's like when Mom
and Dad are fighting.
One instance in particular
where I got really heated,
and I'm really bad at
keeping my emotions in check,
basically we had this shot
where it was a walk and talk
and Justin wanted a shot,
and I wanted the shot too.
I would've loved for
this shot to work.
And I was like, "Justin, we
don't have time for this.
I think we should just
nail a single on him
and a single on him."
He's like, "I'm the director
and this is my movie."
- We both have egos.
- And I'm like,
"All right, well,
I'm the DP and I'm
supposed to be doing this."
He's like, "Yeah, but
I'm the director."
And I'm like, "Okay,
well, I'ma dip then."
So I literally just
walked off set.
- I anticipated it
happening at some point.
- If he's not gonna
let me do my job,
then there's no reason
I should be there.
That's how I felt
in that moment.
- I'm not gonna beg him to stay.
- I sat with Kelly and Ray
and they're like, "Oh, hey."
And I was upset. I was like
hot, and they could tell.
They were like,
"What's going on?"
And I'm like, "Oh,
just Justin is being,"
[laughing] or
something like that.
Five, 10 minutes
go by. I'm like...
I stormed off super dramatically
and I made it seem
like I was leaving,
but obviously I couldn't leave.
- I think it was just a
heat of the moment thing.
He doesn't want to
abandon the film
'cause I think his
heart is in it.
- We ended up doing
the two singles
that I suggested
in the first place.
I mean, I didn't wanna
say I told you so, but...
- We talked about it.
We just tried to
swallow our pride.
- [Brandin] But it's okay.
That's all water
under the bridge.
- [Justin] I think we've
learned a lot about each other.
And what I've learned about
Brandin is that he's talented.
He's got a very
good cinematic eye,
which is really important
to me as a filmmaker,
as a writer, and as a director.
- Oh, I think me and
Justin are a great team.
- Even if we disagree,
even if we fight.
- [Brandin] When we
actually are on set
and we're making moves
and we're getting what we
need to get, it's great.
[sentimental music playing]
[audience cooing]
[laughing]
- Crazy day. Another crazy day.
Everybody's still here, so
we're still working. So.
["Am I Really
Alive" by Luverboy]
- Welcome to my crib, MTV.
My husband actually divorced me,
so this was like the
result of our fight.
So it turned out pretty
much exactly how I wanted.
This is my kitchen.
Super modern.
This is my foyer.
This is where I like
to sit and read.
Just ignore that little
mess in the corner.
And over here is my baby's
room. This is my baby.
For guests, it has a really
nice view, as you can see.
There's the bathroom.
It's more of like a pop
and squat situation.
Very natural.
Famous artist.
I love his work.
This is my bedroom, obviously.
This is like where
I sleep at night.
I kind of just like
hook my arms and just...
Yeah. Thank you, MTV.
Now get the out of my house.
- Make the drone
shots pretty quick.
We may or may not
have a flying license.
May or may not.
I'm not saying we don't.
We never really know
where security is.
I say we fly the drone
way up in the air
and just scope it out.
[drone beeping]
- Cannot take off.
Your aircraft has entered
authorization zone.
Maybe we're just a
little too close.
- And they say America
is a free country.
- Well, the drone is going
in the air today, guaranteed.
Or you're...
- Or you're fired.
[laughing]
- Or you're fired, Eli.
- Thank you.
- So let's do that now.
- [Eli] What, fire me?
- Let's do that later.
- Let's do that later.
We'll do that later.
Let's go get a shot.
- [Producer] How was
yesterday? Was...
- Yeah.
I remember everything happened
like it was yesterday.
- We started off the day great.
We were all happy
and we're filming.
- Shooting at an
abandoned neighborhood.
We're not supposed
to be outside.
First thing we
do, we're outside.
- Because it was
gonna be one shot.
- We move out to the street.
We were moving dumb fast.
- We shot one shot.
- And then guess what happens?
We see the white truck
and when you see the white
truck, everyone scrambles.
We have one more.
Oh. [groaning]
- This truck pulled up.
- It had like a city logo on it.
- He saw us.
- And I was like, oh,
no. Oh, no, not again.
- That was our second
time going there
after being kicked
out last week.
- And I'm like, ah! In
my head, I'm like...
- Justin's like,
"Get in the house."
We're like... [squealing]
- They ran.
I didn't know what was
happening, and then I ran.
- He pulls up.
[imitates car stopping]
- Turns on his like
intercom and he's like...
- "Get out of that house now!"
- "I know that you're in there."
- He honks his horn.
[truck horn honking]
- We're hiding. If you know
me, I hate to get in trouble.
I don't like getting in trouble.
I don't like to get in trouble.
He's like, "Come
out!" One more time.
And Justin's like, "Okay.
I'm just gonna have to
go out there." So...
- Justin didn't want
the security guard
to see the kids outside.
- He's like, "Where's
the rest of you?
I know you are in there."
And what does Antonio do?
He's like, "All right,
guys, come out."
Ooh, I got so hot.
I was like, "Antonio, you...
Why are you blowing
up the spot, homie?"
- We can't go to jail for that.
- I was panicking.
- Because there's no
signs or anything.
- It was actually
pretty scary, actually.
- We could have got kicked
out, but not went to jail.
- So you guys know,
the worst case scenario
is we just all leave.
No one's in trouble. Okay?
= Justin's on the phone. I
don't know who he's calling.
I think he's calling Craig.
- [Producer] I think he
was pretending to call.
I don't think there was
nobody on the other line.
- Really?
- Yeah.
And the guy's like,
"Where are they?
Filming at a
different location?"
I just wanna...
I just wanna slap him one time.
- They pretended to leave.
- Justin's like, "Oh,
yeah, we're packing up."
- So I take this very camera
that we're using right now,
which is not the camera
we're filming with.
And I, you know, pretend like
that's the camera we're using.
Try to do some trickery.
Justin didn't want
to just leave.
- Right now, like right now,
we need to knock out
them packing their bags.
Bring out like a
couple apple boxes.
Meanwhile we have like 20
otter boxes inside the house.
- Not the best time to film.
- Kayden's dad was being
followed by this guy.
And Kayden's dad is a real G.
Kayden's dad was whipping
[imitates tires screeching],
trying to lose him.
Left, right, left, right.
But he hasn't been to this
abandoned neighborhood,
so he got lost himself.
So he didn't even
know where we were.
- You made the wrong turn. Do
you know where you're going?
- He's hot. He's
all over the place.
I brought him over
to the hospital
and he got all those guys.
- On the way in,
we saw these other people
at the abandoned hospital.
- So he kind of pulled
in like he was with them.
- And the guy is like, "Oh,
there's people here too."
So he turns on his
siren and parks there.
Meanwhile, Craig's like, "All
right, that's my cue to go."
- He didn't even like
realize that my dad was gone.
It was actually kind
of funny, though.
- And we had kept a lookout
for if the guy came back.
- [Brandin] He's right
behind me, by the way.
- He's on his way back?
- He's calling Craig right now.
- The security guard
shows up again.
- We just fake everything.
- And then he just literally
backs up and drives away.
- So we're like, all
right, we'll stay.
- And then guess what?
We take everything
back out of the truck.
We go inside, everyone dips,
and we film for
another two hours
and we get the minimum
of the scenes we needed.
But at least we got
the scenes we needed.
- [Justin] Shooting at
our undisclosed location
is always a pleasure.
- It's toasty.
- It was so hot.
- Bruh.
- It's hot.
- We're all covered
in sweat here.
- 106 out here at this
abandoned hospital.
- I know, right?
- [Justin] It's
creepy. Really creepy.
- Who would do such
a thing? Shameful!
- There's a bunch of
graffiti everywhere.
[Kayden shivering]
- It was giving me the creepies.
[door slamming]
- Who goes there?
- Ooh.
- Is there more stuff?
- Scary hospital.
Jake. He's the best
sound guy ever, though.
- Oh, wow. Thanks.
I thought I was just another
denizen of this haunted place.
- Whoa.
Do you guys want to get set up
so we're getting
the medicine now?
- Oh, the medicine. Okay.
That's all set? Cool.
Do you wanna walk
back to your mom?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- [Producer] Any crazy
stuff that's happened?
- Ooh.
- That's annoying.
- [Justin] Security is always
just around the corner.
- We were on the rooftop and
we saw the guy like two times.
So we had to jump down
and we were there for like
10 minutes, laying like this
and I was like, "Oh, I
don't want get caught."
- Yeah, so security's
here. We're staying low.
It's on the DL.
This will be the third
time we've gotten caught.
- He could have seen the
camera. That's my only concern.
- But he passed
by a couple times.
- [Producer] We're
good. We're good.
- We have one more little scene.
It was just me
dropping my knees.
- Jerome, can you be on
lookout duty, please?
- [Jerome] Of course.
- Set.
- All right, cut.
All right. Let's
get out of here.
- For me, coming
out here, you know,
having to deal with, you know,
getting caught or
it being too hot,
I'm okay because it's like,
I see the passion
behind the scenes
and because Justin cares
so much, it's like,
it makes it worth the sacrifice.
- Just so over it.
Was I cut out to be a filmmaker?
Sometimes I question.
Why? Why do I put myself
through all this stress?
And then I'm like,
for good stories.
And then I think about some
of the films I've shot.
I'm like, ugh.
No, I'm just kidding.
This one is a good story.
That's why I do it.
Oh.
And on that note,
catch you later.
We are here in Orange County.
We're gonna have a
police car out here.
This Escalade.
In this future, the
police got more funding.
We're gonna put some Asteras
up there, wet down the street.
So... [snapping fingers]
- [Producer] That's the
good thing about it.
- Let's get rolling.
- Whenever it's just you
guys sitting and talking,
those go by so quick.
They're so easy.
- Yeah, they are.
- You know?
Shoot this one and then
47 will be the syringe.
Okay. So it'll just
just be your blocking.
- Yeah.
- Which it'll be much easier.
- Yeah.
- So, yeah.
Today's gonna be an easy day.
- Hopefully.
- Knock on wood.
- Unless the neighbors freak
out about what we're doing.
- They can freak out.
- [Kayden] Yeah, they
can't freak out as long...
- [Brandin] As long
as we have Kelly.
- [Justin] As long as we
have Kelly, we're good.
[birds cawing]
- [Producer] Dude!
- [Producer] The birds know
when something's wrong.
- So we are shooting the
scene where Kayden is running.
It's kind of like a flashback.
Justin goes out
there to wet the road
to make it look more cinematic.
All the kids in the neighborhood
are like running around,
doing Orange County things.
And one of the
older kids is like,
"Hey, guys, do you
guys have a permit?"
Kelly comes out, Kayden's mom.
She's like, "Is there
a problem here?"
Their dad is like, "Yeah,
you're the [censored] problem."
We were all just like, "Whoa."
And then Kelly's
like, "Excuse me?"
And then basically they
got into it, like heated.
Justin was there.
- Man, today was just
like a [censored] show.
- Kelly was going
off and then...
- [Abood] He started
yelling at us and...
- Justin's like basically
holding her back.
"They're not worth it."
We got a very quick scene.
- Everybody else was cool.
Everybody else thought
it was just rad
that they were filming a
movie in their neighborhood.
- Is that really upsetting you?
- Maybe he wanted to be in
the movie. I don't know.
- What a [censored].
- It went down from there.
- All right, now we have to
shoot this as fast as possible.
[sighs] Great.
You know, Justin
is very rational.
You know, what's the worst
thing that could happen?
That's how he thinks.
And I think more like,
well, what's the least worst
thing that could happen?
[laughing]
Those are the two
differences, right?
I'm like, I'm not that worried.
He's extremely worried.
And sometimes on set,
that just doesn't match.
We have the cop lights
out there going off.
Justin wanted to
turn off the lights
while we weren't shooting.
And I was like, "Well, that's
just stupid. [laughing]
That's just gonna waste time."
What he was really worried about
is them actually
calling the cops
and the cops coming and
impersonating the police,
which is actually illegal.
I'm like, "That's
stupid," like... [laughs]
But the cops
actually did show up.
Apparently someone
called the cops.
- So mid-scene, Kelly
calls me up there.
I walk up and standing next
to her is a sheriff deputy.
- Kelly's like a senator.
She's like a politician.
Very good at talking.
She's very persuasive
and she's very nice.
- Hi, I'm Kelly.
- That's when I
start to get worried.
That's the moment
where we get worried.
Things have already
gone bad. [laughing]
Justin's like,
"Let's prevent it from
getting to that point."
I'm like, "Well, let's
get it to that point
and then we'll start worrying
about it." [laughing]
- She is amazing.
I walk up to him, he
reaches out his hand,
shakes my hand,
calls me brother.
Like just super cool. And I'm
like, I knew it was Kelly.
- Oh, the cops
loved me. Trust me.
I threw out their boss's names
and they're like,
"Oh, you know them?"
Yeah.
- He's just...
Eating it up.
- The cop ended up leaving
and you know, Kelly
saved the day.
- They're asleep.
Blast some moonlight
through this window. Done!
- There's a white
owl flying over us.
If you see it, please film it.
- We get to set and just
always filming birds.
We filmed hawks
having [censored].
We filmed birds flying
over. We really did.
- I don't know, man.
- [Brandin] They would've
been louder, I think.
- I don't like the way
hawks have [censored].
- [Brandin] Why? What do
you like having [censored]?
- I thought they were
trying to kill each other.
- Oh. [laughing]
- Which...
- I mean...
- Some humans do that.
- All right, all
right, all right.
I know what you're gonna say,
so I'll just say it for you.
That squirrel, though.
[playful music playing]
- We are getting a shot of
the feathers right now. Okay?
We didn't actually
kill a chicken.
Just want you guys to know.
- [Byron] Did y'all
actually gather them
or did y'all pick them?
- We took them off Claudia.
[producers laughing]
No, we did not.
We didn't, Byron.
- [Kayden] Do you think we'd
actually do that to a chicken?
- [Byron] Why would you do that?
- Abood here, my
friend, my buddy...
- [Justin] Let's
have Kayden and Byron
sitting on a tailgate.
- Meets with the
chicken, Claudia.
That guy is full of it.
[laughing]
- That jacket would
look better on me.
- Never act like that, kids.
- [Mikyla] That's actually
such a nice frame.
- We have to be quiet on set.
- You stole the camera light.
Whenever the
behind-the-scenes is on,
she finds a way to make
sure she is the big star.
- Just remember
that nice slow pace
and that's some nice
pauses in between.
- Speed.
- Scene 41 alpha.
Take one, marker.
- I live literally 20
feet away from Kayden.
It's how I found out, 'cause
it's literally in my backyard.
- Who do you like
better, me or Byron?
No, I'm just kidding.
Don't answer that question.
Everywhere can be our home
if both of us are there.
- I think the main thing
is a little more animation
and a little more personality
and a little more eye
contact and smiling with her.
- My stomach makes these noises.
[Byron belching]
[rhythmic music playing]
[night insects chirping]
- [Justin] Cut!
- Can you see, Justin?
- [Justin] Yeah. Can
they face each other?
- Yeah. Face each other.
- Yeah. Way back.
Remember kind of how
we were yesterday?
Not like Dracula.
So she's gonna pretend to
poke him. No needle, nothing.
So let's make sure we
don't get her hand.
Wait for it to work.
Please, please, please.
So it's just, it's a slow build.
Come on. Come on.
Just leaning back,
totally destroyed. Okay?
- Yeah.
- Cool.
Let's go for one.
- Hold the camera.
[laughing]
- How many do you have?
- Two.
- Justin's always prepared.
Let's do your part.
- Abood!
- Like even if it was full,
you have to actually push it.
But what is this
material, though?
- Paint.
- Paint and water.
[laughing]
You tell me.
- I don't have
enough information
to tell you if
that's good or not.
- What if I just pull
some of your blood?
If his blood goes back in,
his vein is not gonna die.
When was the last
time you did this?
- When I took my
phlebotomy class.
[suspenseful music playing]
- This one must have hurt.
- Goodness.
- That wasn't so bad.
All right. That's indie
filmmaking for you.
So we're here in an
undisclosed location.
Today and tomorrow
are the last chances.
We have to get these
scenes that are crucial.
We can't get busted.
Security's kind
of popping today.
I don't know what's going on,
but we've been caught twice
and nearly caught a third time.
I hope and pray we
don't get caught today.
Only time will tell.
I want to introduce
you to the colorist.
And his name is Eli.
- Hello. And I'm also right
now doing behind the scenes.
- [Justin] How long did it take-
- For this?
- For this?
- 14 years.
- [Justin] What's the
best part about it?
- You always have a pillow,
no matter where you go.
- This place is so sketch.
- Yeah. I'm so
afraid for our gear.
- Not our gear.
Gear that was entrusted to us,
that we would take care of it.
That's the thing
about indie film.
It's not this pristine
white backdrop.
No, it's [censored] golden
curtains at the Red Roof Inn.
On the desk.
We have a guest.
- Excuse me. Your
highness is calling.
- [Eli] Bye, Mikyla.
- So you're probably wondering
why I'm sitting on a desk.
That's because there's
not a chair in here.
There's a desk,
but I guess people don't
need to sit or something.
Well, I need to sit.
It's been a long day.
We went to the hospital
to unload gear.
So my car and Brandin's car,
we need to get rid of
those vehicles, basically.
Group shows up. Kayden and
Kelly and Craig, they show up.
Craig's our shuttle driver.
So he shuttles everybody to
the site and then goes back
so there's no vehicles outside,
so we don't get caught.
Craig's shuttling
us to the hospital
and he's like, "Look
at that backpack."
It's a black backpack
just on the ground.
He was like, "Is that yours?"
I was like, "I don't think so."
But then I looked out
and I see the hard
drive with all of our,
all the footage on
this hard drive.
And I'm like, that is our
backpack, Brandin's backpack.
So I jump out and there's
our precious hard drive,
just in the middle of the
road, cables everywhere,
Brandin's $3,500 laptop
in the middle of the road.
Apparently his backpack
was in the truck
and it wasn't secured and it
just slipped out the back.
You've got really
expensive equipment.
You've got
irreplaceable footage.
How is that just gonna slip
out of the back of a truck?
Everything should be secured,
but that has the
entire film on it,
like the past two
months of work.
How is that not
gonna be secured?
Like that's the most
precious thing we have.
Yeah, that was nuts. That
was actually really nuts.
Just, yeah. I mean...
I mean, it takes
like two seconds
to make sure things are secure.
Kayden and Kelly were there
and so I just had to
pretend it didn't bother me.
But yeah, that was...
I always back
everything up twice.
So the footage was backed
up on other hard drives
and that is why you
always have two backups.
That right there. Anyways, yeah.
I was...
Yeah.
- [Brandin] And then when
you go to infinity, it just-
- [Mikyla] It just resets.
- Don't you love when
rental gear doesn't work?
- Yeah, and let's
mark them if we can.
Action.
- Okay. Action.
- Two tickets, please.
Come on! Let's go check it out.
- [Producer] Behind you, Justin.
[gasps]
[ominous laughing]
- We got a really good take.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
- Do one more. One more.
- Cool.
- [Justin] All right. Ready?
And speed.
- Yeah.
And ta-da.
- Ta-da!
- Cut.
- Okay.
Let's move it on out.
[car horn honking]
Yeah. We have not gone inside.
Yeah.
Is it okay if we continue?
- [Guard] Yeah. Just
don't go inside.
- [Justin] Okay. Yeah, we won't.
- [Guard] Y'all have a good one.
- [Justin] We can still go.
- [Kayden] We can?
- This is one of the nice ones.
- Okay, nice.
- So let's just, you
know, get what we need.
Get it good. And
then we'll be...
All right.
["Empty Roads" by MOUNTA!NS]
What we've missed
Slowing down but
speeding fast
Now we're on our way
The streets all pave the way
To grant us one last wish
The death of our first kiss
- So we are filming at this
beautiful movie theater.
- [Justin] This is our setup.
- [Producer] How
are you doing today?
- I'm doing great.
Who are you again?
Excuse me. Director.
- What's up?
- Who's this?
- Get out of here!
Who let you in?
No paparazzi.
- So what do you want to know?
You want me to
talk about Brandin?
I think that I tightened
more than 50 C-stands
for these two lights
that are up now.
So that gives you an idea.
- We good on batteries?
Where is little miss Mikyla?
- She'll be coming here.
- She'll be coming
around the mountain.
- What's that?
She'll be coming
around the mountain
She'll be coming
She'll be coming around
the mountain when she comes
- We are ready now. Let's go.
- Good?
- Sorry.
Can we get a battery real
quick? That says low voltage.
- Oh my gosh. Don't
get me eating.
I know everybody else does this.
- And action.
- Come on! Come on!
- Cut.
Action.
- After you.
I been going lickin' toads
- Lickin' toads.
I'm just looking for
a friend to stop me
Hmm! [laughing]
[trailer playing]
- So I think we're wrapped.
Man, what a journey, right?
So, yeah. Thank
you guys so much.
- Don't cry on us now, Justin.
No! Give me a hug.
Stop! If you cry, I'm
gonna cry, so don't cry.
Oh, we're so proud
of you. Don't cry.
- Yeah, that was cool.
- [Mikyla] No,
guys, stop crying.
- I'm really proud of you guys.
So thank you guys so much.
If I had a drink, I would say
here's to like new friends.
- Oh.
- So, anyways, cool.
- He's almost crying.
- Aww.
- We'll be watching your
career with great interest.
- What a nice guy.
- No, let's do...
- I will. I will.
- [Byron] Fresh buttery popcorn.
- You wanna hold this?
- Jake!
- Jake!
- What?
Oh, the boompole!
[camera clicks]
It's like, I wrote the
script, finished the script.
All right.
But that was just
scratching the surface.
No, I love you guys so much.
- [Kelly] We love you too.
Thank you so much
for casting Kayden.
- Oh my God.
No. You guys are such
valuable people to me.
- This has been
one hell of a ride.
I love what has been done.
I have a new level of respect
for directors, crew members.
The details, the
intricate details
that goes to all
of the shooting.
Have a new level of
respect for parents
and who really have
a desire to uplift
and encourage their children
to pursue their dreams.
Having those skills later on
in life does help their growth
in any area that they decide
to go on in their career.
I don't wanna take anything
away from the director
or the back, you know, the
tech team and the actors,
but I'm like, oh, I feel
like it's my project too.
- I mean, I'm sad that we
won't be able to see each other
like every day on the weekend,
but it's not like we're never
gonna see each other again
because we're gonna be friends
and we could possibly
get another role
for one of your movies.
So we're still gonna be able
to see each other again.
If you have a dream, go for it.
I started out not
knowing anybody here
to knowing everybody.
I started off for
having no friends here
to a bunch of friends here.
So basically everything's
changed. Basically everything.
- I'm like incredibly
proud of my daughter
and of this production,
but I'm like so sad
for this experience
for her and for me to be over.
It's been like the
greatest experience,
especially with everything
going on in the world
and seeing my daughter just
like come out of her shell more
as an actor.
Justin's ability to help
her grow has been amazing.
Every single moment...
Sorry. I'm the emotional mom.
It's definitely
been quite a ride
for Kayden's first feature film
and I wouldn't have
it any other way.
Wouldn't have changed
anything about the experience.
Justin's amazing.
His drive, his skill, his
passion is just unbelievable
and second to none.
So definitely life-changing
for her and for me as her mom.
Sorry.
- I'm not ready for
it to end right now.
We've been through
so much together
and I love everybody here.
We've been on an amazing
adventure together
and this film is amazing.
But I just wanna thank my mom,
everything she's done for me
and I wanna thank the
crew and everybody
because you've taught me so much
and it really means a lot to me.
And I have grown as an actor.
So from day one
and all I wanna
say is thank you.
I'm not ready for it to end.
- Cut. That was great.
- Oh my gosh.
This is not over.
- Of course not.
- It's not over.
- I hired you to drive me
around on the golf cart-
- Oh, yeah.
- For the rest of my life, so.
- [Kayden] Yeah.
- Geez. Thank you guys.
I love these...
Love these kids,
love their parents.
And they really
believed in fate.
But there's just like so many
things that have transpired
over the course of this
production that it's like,
I feel like I'm exactly
where I'm supposed to be.
I don't know. Anyways,
but it's not the end.
["Come Home With
You" by Max Bienert]
Tell me that you're
never going to leave me
Tell me that you'll
stay just one more time
You say you feel
loved and I believe it
We both think it's
better just to try
Tell me that you made
it just to keep it
Tell me fleeting
love is not for you
You say I'm the one
and I believe it
You've just got to
show me what to do
You said it once
You said it twice
I didn't hear
You whispered in my ear
Lazy Sunday afternoon
At the table set for two
We cheers to the new
I follow closely
where you lead
You don't look back
You're blinded to the past
But if you look
in front of you
I'm right here
to share the view
And I'll come
I'll come home with you
Tell me that you're
never going to leave me
Tell me that you'll
stay just one more time
You say you feel loved
And I believe it
We both think it's
better just to try
I held your hand
You held it back
And held on tight
I'm falling
through the floor
I give all myself to you
That's what you're
supposed to do
When you're in love
I'm at a loss
for what to say
You meet my eyes
I pry at drifting words
Trim the sides
and get the glue
Let's build something
bright and new
And I'll come
I'll come home with you
[upbeat music]
