Beyond the Lake (2022) Movie Script

[guitar smashing]
[Music]
[Joe] Hey everybody,
I'm Joe Lakeman.
Thanks for having me.
[Crowd chattering]
Gonna sing a few songs for you.
[Texting sounds,
silverware clinking]
Actually I'm gonna...
[Laughter]
[guitar smashing]
[birds chirping]
[Guitar case creaking]
[Waves crashing]
[Laughing]
Ladies and gentlemen,
give it up,
for the main event,
the sultan of the strings,
guitar god himself,
the soul man,
Joseph Lakeman!
[Hands Clapping]
[Hands clapping]
Come on dude,
almost two years
and you never told us
about your music?
There's nothing to tell.
Nah, no, no, no, no.
You see, algorithms
are a funny thing, my friend.
Via memories, via a
friend, via a hashtag
that is you.
[Crowd cheering]
No,
no, that's,
that's not me.
Yeah and Nat's too loud.
That is so you.
No, it's not. That doesn't
look anything like me.
What are you talking about?
Dude, that's so you come on man!
Look, I, I really appreciate
the gesture you guys but uh,
Seriously I, I can't take this.
So you don't want it?
You helped me pick it.
Oh, thank you
sister dearest, thank you.
You know, how come every
time there's a bad idea,
it suddenly becomes my idea.
Um, hey, I wanted the Yamaha,
all right?
You were the one that's like,
"let's get the Washburn."
Look guys, I probably can't
even play this thing anymore.
- So, it was you.
- Okay, okay.
Well, it was me, but
like a lifetime ago.
Looks here like it was
only 18 months ago.
Hey, that's, that's around
when you got here, isn't it?
Okay.
Look man, it's yours, so,
play it or pitch it,
it's up to you.
[Trash compactor running]
[car brakes screeching]
[Panting]
[Panting]
[Water Spilling]
Hello?
Uh
yes, I'm still here.
Uh
uh, yeah.
Tomorrow?
I'll be there.
An original song?
Yeah, yeah, I have
plenty of those.
Um,
I can do that.
Great, well uh hey I'm
I'm really looking
forward to this.
Thank you so much, Mr. Davis.
Cool.
Yeah, and hey, you're,
you're not gonna regret this.
You're...
Hello?
Okay,
an original song, right.
All right, I can do that.
Okay.
[wind gushing]
Hey.
So,
how was your day?
Mine was interesting.
Actually, I just got off the
phone with an event coordinator
at a restaurant up North.
[Joe] They,
they actually, they called
because their
main event dropped out
for tomorrow night and
they want me to take his place.
I mean, it's a huge opportunity.
So um,
I was thinking, you know,
since it's kind of a big deal
if maybe you'd wanna
come to this one.
[Muffled earbud Music]
What?
I just got off the phone...
[blender whirring]
I just got with the phone
with a restaurant up North!
What?!
They called me...
Who?!
Their performer backed out
and they want me
to play instead!
I can't hear you!
It's a really big
step up for me,
so I was wondering if...
Joe, I cannot hear you!
I was wondering if maybe
you'd wanna come to this one.
Sorry, I'm busy.
You said that last time.
Some of us have jobs.
This is a job. It's a gig.
I'm sorry, I don't have time
to come watch you sing
at an open mic night
at a hole-in-the-wall bar.
No, no, Allison, no listen.
I'm, I'm headlining.
It's happening.
This is my big break.
Where is it?
Burgers, tomorrow.
The brewery, tomorrow?
Yeah, what?
Thursday night is college night
Uck!
You're gonna be singing
to a bunch of kids.
Really?
[Allison] Yeah, that's
why they picked you.
They needed a babysitter,
not a musician.
Well, I'm still headlining.
[Allison] Yeah, yeah, I
heard, it's your big break.
[gentle music]
Look, don't worry about it.
They're gonna love you.
They won't even be listening.
Then sing to me and only me.
You'll be there?
Look, don't just say you're
gonna be there and then...
Front and center,
I will be there.
Save me a seat.
I mean it. I don't wanna
get stuck in the back
behind some big hat
and not be able to see.
Okay.
Um,
I guess I'd better get
back to work on the song.
Joe,
I want to go to bed.
Okay, yeah, I'll be quiet.
No, you won't.
Yeah, I will.
Allison.
Goodnight.
[Announcer] Good evening
boys and girls.
I'm Ed Tavner,
welcome to Burgers.
So our performer this evening
stepped in on short notice.
You know it's funny because,
you know I'm sort of
a musician myself.
Yeah, you know, I record a mix.
I do it all.
You can find me on
SoundCloud at Hugh13Music
That's Hugh13Music.
Anyways, it seemed
like a no-brainer.
When you have your own
in-house musician on payroll,
to have him be your, you know,
go-to when you need a
quick fill in, you know,
let him get his name out there.
But, but I guess management
doesn't see it that way.
Anyway, lesson is
nobody's perfect,
talent goes unrecognized
all the time.
So, without further ado, give
it up for Joseph Lakeman.
[audience applauding]
Hey everybody.
I'm Joe Lakeman.
I'm gonna sing a
few songs for you.
Thanks for having me.
[Guitar strumming]
If you were here with me now
We could look in your
eyes and get lost
in the spaces between us
You'd tell me no lies
and we would be fine
[Incorrect Guitar notes]
[Allison] Then sing
to me and only me.
[Joe] You'll be there?
Look, don't just say you're
gonna be there and then...
[Allison] Front and
center, I will be there.
Save me a seat.
I will.
Alison, goodnight.
[gentle guitar music]
Allison, do you recall last
night what you said at all
When you looked at me
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
You held my head,
looked in my eyes
Gave me a reason
to even try but
Your seat is empty
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Maybe you saw what
I couldn't see
Maybe you figured
it out before me
That I would never be worthy
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Of anything, but empty seats
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Guess it was only
a matter of time
It's not like this
is the first sign
That you're not right for me
Even when you're happy
you can kinda be mean
And I know you're
22 but you look 16
And you're an empty seat
Time stops like
a frozen train
When you're left
alone on memory lane
Drowning in the purple rain
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
'Cause I know girl, that
we've had our issues before
But I just don't think
I can do this anymore
I know love has a cost
and I gladly paid for it
I loved you, I swore it
took my heart and tore it
Out for you, before you,
loved me, I adored you
Don't know what the hell
else I gotta do for you
To be here I'm sorry I
couldn't be strong for you
Make better songs for you
Maybe I'm wrong for you
Maybe you're wrong for me
Maybe it's jealousy
When I see you moving
through life so easily
You gave me love girl
but I needed more
Is it too much to ask you
to walk through the door
'Cause girl love
takes two people
I'm right here
but you're just
An empty
Seat
[gentle guitar music]
I truly wish you all the
best in whatever you do
With the rest of your life
'Cause it won't be with me
[gentle guitar music]
The place where you were
in my heart is now closed
I already live with
too many ghosts
And empty
Seats
[gentle guitar music]
[Slow clapping]
[Crowd cheering loudly]
[guitar smashing]
[Crickets chirping]
[dramatic music]
[cellphone ringing]
Hello?
Guitar man!
What's going on buddy,
where are you?
We've been waiting for you.
[Joe] Oh, um,
sorry, yeah, I, I'm not
gonna make it today.
[Dom] Everything okay?
Uh,
Oh yeah, um,
yeah, everything's fine.
Um, I just don't wanna
get caught outside.
[Dom] Caught outside?
You know, in the rain.
Rain, what rain?
It's beautiful out
right now, man.
Well, you know, you know
how the lake can get.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, tell me more
about that book you're
reading. Sounds interesting.
Look, man, I don't know
what's gotten into you
or what's wrong,
but Nat's worried
and you know how she is
when she gets fixated,
so just help me out here.
[Joe] Just tell
her I got a fever.
Oh, she'll sniff through
that in two seconds.
[Joe] Okay, Dom, I trust
you'll figure something out.
[Dom] What? Figure something
out, are you kidding me?
- Dom.
- Do I have to remind you
about that improv
class we took together?
Dom, I can't talk right now.
Wait, I got it, I got it,
we'll just come to you.
- What?
- Yeah!
You don't wanna leave the house,
Nat wants to see you,
I want to slack line, we'll
set the line up there,
- it'll be perfect.
- No, Dom, Dom.
Hey, yeah, that'd be great.
- No, no, Dom, please.
- See you soon.
No, no, no, no, no, no!
I'm hungry.
Let's go to Joe's.
[Dom] Joe?
[door knocking]
Hello?
We're uh, we're
setting up outside.
Joe?
You in here buddy?
Where's he gone now?
[Joe] Whoa!
[gasping]
Joe?
Is that you?
[Allison laughing]
Hi.
Hi.
What's it been?
18 months.
[Allison] Yeah.
Oh my God, look.
What?
So, so what are you doing here?
Taking pictures of birds,
and fish.
Do you, um, do you
live around here?
I, I just moved into
Lakeside yesterday.
I'm visiting a friend.
[Allison] Oh, is he here too?
Uh no, he's...
I like to stop here
on my way out.
Cool, cool, cool.
Well, it's a, it's a long drive.
Oh yeah, absolutely.
Well, it was crazy to
to see you.
- Um.
- Yeah.
You'll have to stop
by on your next visit.
- Okay.
- Okay.
Are, are you uh, are you
parked near Lakeside?
Um, where are you parked?
Um, up the road.
[Allison] Are you sure
I can't get you any...
Yeah, I'm sure.
It's a beautiful day out.
Yeah, it's nice.
[Indistinguishable Chatter]
Joe, why didn't
you tell anyone...
Tea sounds excellent actually.
Do you ever have
Irish breakfast?
Not English breakfast,
Irish breakfast.
There's sort of a heavier
density in the leaves.
It started in Ireland,
a man named Greg.
Papstickle. There's a
tiny little difference.
You really start to
notice it on the...
[Indistinguishable Chatter]
Tea?
Right.
Just Earl Gray, sorry.
Careful, it's, it's
still really, really...
Um, so, you never, you
never answered my question.
Where do you live?
A little bit West of here.
So you're still writing?
Yeah, yeah, thought this was
the perfect place to do it.
Um,
How, how long have
you lived here?
[Joe] West of here.
Yeah, yeah.
Do you, do you,
do you still do music?
Agh!
Nope.
What?
Nothing it's, um,
You just look so
much older somehow.
So, so what do you do?
Take pictures for the paper.
Nice, you like it?
Love it.
Think that paper needs writers?
[coughing]
So you're staying?
Yeah, I think so.
[all laughing]
Don't you just hate Joe?
Yeah, what an idiot!
[all laughing]
Well, it's getting late and
I don't like driving
at night, so...
Joe, why didn't you say
anything when you left?
I was worried.
What happened, Joe?
We would be fine, I'd
be yours, you'd be mine
I'd be yours, you'd be mine
We would be fine, I'd
be yours you'd be mine
If you were here with
me now I'd get lost
We would be fine, I'd
be yours, you'd be mine
Oh, oh, sorry.
- Hi.
- I was just...
- Sorry.
- Hi.
Uh, sorry.
[insects chirping]
[door hinge creaking]
[gentle guitar music]
There's 4,529 miles
Of shoreline along the
Great Lakes and Ohio's
Just 312 of those this
towns less than one
Yet out of all of those
miles to this one you've come
There's four other lakefronts
you could've lived on
Superior, Ontario,
Michigan or Huron
I didn't even count Canada
but if I did that's probably
A 0.001% chance
of you finding me
Ooh, da, da, doo, how
can you not mention
How we went down in
that town I tried to
Leave behind me,
still you find me
Just friends let's be,
but you won't let me
Go
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Do you know that feeling
when you walk down the stairs
You think you've
reached the bottom
But there's one
more step there
That was my feeling
upon seeing you
But instead of one more
step, there's 302
Now I will admit that
I left rather rapidly
But you're not someone
who is left behind easily
There's so many places
that you could've moved to
Just what does a guy have
to do to get rid of you
I hope you find that
this life is not for
You, and you'll choose
to remove yourself from
My world finally,
would you kindly
There's no more us,
you need to just
Go
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Maybe you missed me,
maybe you were scared
But there's a 0.001%
chance that I care
I've heard of bad luck,
but I'm sure you'll agree
That if there's an
unluckiest man in the world
He's not as unlucky as
Me, da da di, can't
you see that I've moved
On, we're just wrong
so so long what can I
Do, ahah ooh, why
won't you just let the
Past stay the past
This has lasted long
Enough said,
I think it's past time
Forget this happened
Pack your bags and
Go, there's the road
Adios, get far a
way from this place
Now I pray that you'll be
come inclined to go and find
Some other guy to undermine
I close my eyes cause
just the sight of you
Makes my jaw
clench down tight
Can't say that I'll miss you
don't let the door hit you
No time for apologies,
why do you follow me?
Don't wanna be rude
But you really need
to forget about me
Like I'd finally
forgotten 'bout
You
You
You
You
You
[flies buzzing]
[moaning]
[gasping]
[screaming]
[crying]
[crying]
[Answering machine] At the tone,
please record your message.
[Beep]
Hey Dom, it's, it's me, Alison.
You, you just haven't
been answering my calls
so I just, I just wanted
to make sure you were okay.
Um,
What are you doing right now?
I just thought that, um,
Maybe we could go for a,
go for a walk or
or get out...
[crying]
Or something.
Just,
just gimme a call back okay?
Bye.
Two weeks ago you looked like
a newborn goat on that thing.
What the heck did you do?
Sometimes you gotta fight
extra hard to stay on the line.
And sometimes,
Sometimes you gotta
knock someone else off.
Well, whatever that means,
you sir, are back,
back, that's my back.
And you? I'm not used
to seeing you injured.
[Dom] It's not an injury,
okay? I don't get injured.
During periods of high stress,
the body leeches magnesium,
which leads to an increased
probability of spasms.
[Dom moaning]
What's got you all off balance?
[Joe] Ah, who with?
[Dom] Allison.
Sorry?
Thanks man, I appreciate it.
She moved in like
a couple weeks ago
and we were hitting
it off great,
and then last week she
started ghosting me
and then last
night, she showed up
and asked if we
could get coffee.
Yeah, that's strange.
And why all of a sudden?
What does it all mean?
[Dom Groans]
[Joe] Yeah, I don't know man.
Sounds like a
this-isn't-working-out
sort of situation.
See, I told you.
You just don't understand
how women think.
[Joe] Yeah man, she ghosted you.
So it's only right
that you do the same.
Or, you could not go and save
yourself the disappointment.
Or maybe she's just
not that into you.
Hey, I got an idea.
Let's go rock climbing.
But what if it's
something I said.
You do say stupid things.
Yeah.
Well, if that's the case,
I'm gonna go eat some
walnuts and broccoli.
[Dom] Just clean up the
slack line when you're done!
[Bell ringing]
[thunder rumbling]
[rain pattering]
[Allison giggling]
[Allison] What non-dairy
options do you have?
We have coconut, almond and soy.
I'll have a chai tea latte
with coconut milk please.
So you don't like milk?
No, I love it.
Well, I, I,
I would love it, it's
just lactose allergy.
Oh.
[both laughing]
Okay.
The usual for you, Dom?
Yes.
Hmm, the usual?
It's a chai tea latte
made with half and half.
[Coffee Shop music]
I like dairy.
I'll have those down there
for you when they're done.
[Coffee shop music]
[Dom] Oh yeah, absolutely.
We'll, we'll, we'll we'll go,
- if you're ready.
- [Allison] Going.
Yes.
Just a decaf.
[Dom] So what'cha been up to?
[Allison] Writing.
[Dom] Do you like
what you're writing?
Yeah, yeah.
Cool.
'Cause, 'cause I would hate it
if you were doing something
that you didn't like.
Thanks?
Which isn't to say
that I think you should
do something different
just because I think so.
Yeah, yeah, I, I wouldn't
want you to feel like
you had to do that either.
[Dom] Cool, cool.
Could I, could I read one?
One of your uh, writings?
[Allison] Oh, I don't actually
have anything concrete.
It's just a little bit
more bits and pieces.
I, I love taking my time.
Yes.
- Relaxing.
- Love it.
You do?
Hmm?
You like, you like relaxing?
Yes.
Love it.
Love it.
[Barista] Hey Maggie,
we need more vanilla.
[Dom] So, what kind of
stuff have you been writing?
[Allison] So, it's,
stream of conscience,
it's very avant-garde,
a little...
So that's basically where
reflective poetry is.
Sounds awesome.
- I can't wait to read one.
- [Barista] Breve chai
- and coconut milk latte.
- Oh thank God.
Hmm?
Oh, I got it.
Oh, I got it.
I'm gonna get our drinks.
- You just stay right here.
- Got it, captain.
And I'm gonna get our stuff.
It's okay, just be cool,
just be like Hitch,
what would Hitch do?
Be black, dang it.
Okay just tell her she's pretty.
No, that's clich.
Tell her she's not pretty.
You can't just do the opposite
of something clich. That's mean!
[Exhales]
[breathing deeply]
This is, this is you.
This is me.
Cheers.
Yes, cheers to...
- Does yours taste okay?
- [Dom] Hmm?
Yes, it tastes great.
I love it.
So makes me so happy.
How, how, how's yours?
Perfect.
Gah!
So good!
Love it!
[Allison's Stomach Curdling]
You know what? Dom, I actually,
- I need to go.
- Hey,
could I just say
something real quick?
Mm-hmm.
Um, people say that I
can be really intense
and kind of a lot to handle. And
there's this Machine Gun Kelly song
where he talks about passion
being his achilles heel,
either that or keeping
it way too real.
And it's not on Spotify so I,
I can't really play it for you,
but if I could play it, it
would explain everything.
The point is, the point is,
you're really fun and
really nice, really pretty
and you like to slack line and
[Allison's Stomach Curdling]
I'm really glad you came here.
[vomiting]
[Allison coughing]
Nope.
[door hinge creaking]
[Coffee Shop music]
I'ma just go
get a towel.
[rain pattering]
[vomiting]
[rain pattering]
[vomiting]
[coughing]
[toilet flushing]
[insects chirping]
[birds chirping]
Hey guys.
[gentle music]
You were right about Allison.
Was I?
It's amazing how someone
can break your heart
and you can still love them
with all the little pieces.
I read that
in a Country Living article,
"45 Quotes To Heal
A Broken Heart."
I don't know what it means.
I should've listened
to you, Joe.
I thought you were jealous.
But you were just
looking out for me.
I'm sorry, Dom.
Hey, it's probably for the best.
I mean, you know, it's not like
she actually would've
liked me in the end.
Who would?
[birds chirping]
Well, you, you weren't kidding.
You do live a little
bit West of me.
So how'd you wind up finding it?
Would you believe
I got a letter?
[Comedic dance music]
Yes.
So, what's up?
What, not allowed to
visit an old friend?
I could use a familiar face.
Tea?
Thanks.
Sure.
Is this all yours?
Yeah.
Came with the house.
- [Allison] Oh.
- [Joe] The old lady
was kind of a
recluse, apparently.
Is that your room?
Yes.
[Allison] Who is that?
[Joe] Hmm, not sure.
[Allison] It's kind of sad.
[Joe] It grows on you.
[Allison] Hmm.
So, do you like your house?
Yeah.
It's cute.
I mean there's this awful fishy
smell I can't find the source of
and some issues with
the air conditioning,
and other stuff.
Sorry.
Hey, it's not your fault.
Besides,
I'm sure it'll get better.
I just feel like all the
awful stuff I tried to leave
behind followed me up here.
I know the feeling.
But you know,
wherever you run, there you are.
What does that mean?
I think it means you can't
outrun your problems because
they're a part of you,
so,
you take them wherever you go,
whether you want to or not.
Do you feel that way?
I hope not.
But it sure feels like it.
Feels like what?
Like I can't do anything
but mess things up.
Did I mess us up?
[Guitar Strumming]
Thanks for the tea.
You should really
take that down.
I can't.
[Allison] Why not?
'Cause I don't know what
I'd put in it's place.
[Guitar strumming]
You step back into my life
One more time
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
I thought I left you behind
But I don't feel
that way tonight
All right
I'm drifting oh I'm drifting
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
Back to where I cannot go
'Cause the winds that
carried me are shifting
And where I'm bound
I do not know
I don't know
[gentle upbeat guitar music]
You spend your whole
life on a train
One track, going one way
You find yourself asking
Why am I passing
Places I could stay?
Why can't I stay?
Why's it always have to be
On the wrong side
Of happy?
I just want to be
Held, home, safe,
free, at peace
What's wrong with that?
What's wrong with me
I'm falling oh I'm falling
The ground caved in
and swallowed me
And those above
can't hear me calling
'Cause my mind won't
let my heart speak
I'm dying oh I'm dying
No longer sure what
moves my feet
Should listen to my
heart, I'm trying
But that heart's long
since ceased to beat
I'm sinking oh I'm sinking
Lost sight of what
I'm headed for
I'm scared of what I
can't help thinking
I don't think I
want this anymore
[Allison Voiceover] Stones.
Stones buffed by water
and polished by time,
slumbering beneath the
churning surface of the shore
until eager hands pull
them from the murk
into a brave new world
of light and life
as they soar from eager hands
across the water's surface.
Do they know that their strides
must diminish with each skip
until the frigid
water reclaims them,
taking them to deeper
and darker places
than they ever knew before?
Where ghostly leviathans
prowl the murky skies
and all the detritus of life
above gently buries them
one dejected bit at a time.
Was it worth it?
How could they know
where it would take them?
How could they have known that
unlike the birds and the boats,
their destiny is to sink.
Was it the hand's
folly to cast them?
Or was it the stones folly
to actually believe
she could fly?
[flies buzzing]
[gagging]
[flies buzzing]
[vomiting]
[birds chirping]
[laughing]
[laughing]
[Metal Straining]
[Bike Breaking and Crashing]
[Joe groans]
[Employee] That's all I got.
Seriously?
They haven't made parts for
that bike in like 50 years.
And the way to solve that
is to purchase a new bike?
This is the best
I can do for you.
And that's all you have?
A home school family
wiped me out.
One family
came in here earlier
and
purchased every bike you have?
Have you ever seen
a home school family?
This is a bike shop.
Where are the bikes!?
Are you all right, man?
Just gimme the bike.
If you were here with me now
We could look in your eyes
And get lost in the
spaces between us
[insects chirping]
Hi.
Can I help you?
I'm sorry?
It's none of your business.
[Joe] What about him?
He's a big boy.
You don't need to coddle him.
Or is that what this is about?
You wanted him to mess it up.
You pumped him up
with confidence,
hoping he'd scare her off
and then he'd come
running right back to you.
It's a little late for that.
You can go now.
You're walking on thin ice, Nat.
You've never let anyone in far
enough to actually hurt you,
and you're lecturing
me about forgiveness?
You have no idea what
you're talking about.
Let it go, Joe.
It's okay.
Let it go.
[Crickets Chirping]
[Trash Compactor Running]
[Picture Frame Crunching]
[Trash Compactor Shuts Off]
[waves crashing]
[birds chirping]
[Allison] It's not locked.
Where's your bike?
[Allison] Sold it.
You walking or?
I'm leaving.
So yeah,
I'll be outta your hair
and you can get back to
your birds and your fish
and your friends and
your perfect little life.
- Allison...
- No, no,
you had your chance to talk.
Now you do what you do
best and just be quiet.
I'm sorry.
Well, I'm not.
This is good.
All our cards are on the table.
There's no more silence,
no more pretending.
This is just you and me.
I am so glad
that you found the happiness
you were looking to find.
And I am so sorry
if I was the one
getting in the way of that.
- Allison...
- No, not now. Just go!
Just go!
Where were you that night?
You said
sing to only you.
I came.
Don't know how long I sat there.
I just
couldn't make myself go in.
I don't even remember
where I went.
I just drove and
drove and drove.
And when I got back,
you were gone.
Where did you go?
Here.
[kettle whistling]
Tea?
Cool bike.
Thanks.
I've never seen a tandem
bike in real life before.
They're pretty rare.
How do you ride it by yourself?
It's tricky.
Its easier with two people.
Hi! Welcome to Coffee and
Cream.
Thanks for today.
I'm still gonna leave.
I'll be gone by the weekend,
You probably shouldn't
come back before then.
Goodbye, Joe.
It's the song and
the sigh of the weary
Oh hard times, hard times
Come again no more
Many days have you lingered
All around my cabin door
Oh hard times
Come again no more
[birds chirping]
[Dom] Guess Alison's leaving.
Yep.
I talked to Caroline
the other day and
she sad she was getting ready
to put Allison's house back
on the market suddenly.
Joe, did you ever meet Allison?
She vomited on you.
Well yeah, she vomited.
You know when I read that
Country Living article,
there was uh, there
was another quote.
It said, "Sometimes
good things fall apart"
"so that better things
can fall together."
Well, you got what you wanted.
Allison's leaving, so.
[Dom] Yeah.
I dunno, I just hope she's
not leaving on my account.
I mean, she really
seemed to thrive here.
Well, wherever you
run, there you are.
What's that?
Just something someone
told me once.
I'm not gonna lie,
it's been a lot of new cryptic
quotes for me this week.
- You think you can...
- It means,
you can't outrun your problems.
They're a part of you
and you take them
with you, everywhere.
Isn't that kinda the point?
I mean, your demons chase
you everywhere so,
you just stop running, and
pick a place to make a stand.
And gosh, what better
place to do that than here?
Is that another
Country Living article?
No,
no, that one's just me.
Even if Allison did stay,
could you even look at her?
After what she did to you?
I mean,
would she even stand a chance?
- That was my favorite sweater.
- Ah jeez.
I don't know what was in
her stomach that night, but
the front kind of feels
like potato skin now.
And thanks to the bleach the
bear looks like it has leprosy
and late onset alopecia.
But
still got a lot of great
memories in that thing.
And like the chai
and the stomach bile,
those will never wash out.
So even though it's
stained and I'll
probably never wear it again,
it's still a good sweater,
and it's worth holding onto.
What was your question again?
[door knocking]
Hi.
Um, can, can I help you?
[Allison] Oh.
I'm, I'm, I'm really
sorry about that, actually.
Um, oh.
[Allison] I'm sorry?
I, I'm, I'm actually
moving right now,
so, so, I don't have time
for whatever this is.
Um,
It was, it was really
nice to meet you, Nat.
Bye, bye.
Hey.
How many cards?
You did not do
it in three cards.
That's what I thought.
Um...
- I...
- Nope.
No um's, no buts, no maybes,
no I don't think so's, just...
[Joe] There's one missing.
[Guitar music]
When God up in heaven
as a child came down
To introduce peace
to our fury and sound
He knew his own death
would heal us one day
Did he know we'd keep
hurting ourselves anyway
I wanted to be
someone worthy of love
I thought if I was
better that I'd be enough
So I sweat and I bled,
withdrew to my head
And I couldn't understand
you when you said
Stay
Stay
Stay
You lived for the moment
and you showed me how
To let go of tomorrow
and live for the now
You showed me something
that I never knew
The world's so much brighter
when I see it like you
But I still blamed
you for hurting me
Yours was the
face of the enemy
Thought I'd fall to
pieces if I looked at you
So I couldn't see you
were just broken too
You love the adventures
of the new and unknown
But it's hard to rest
when you never feel home
I know you spend longer
and longer each day
Convincing yourself
you're not running away
Stay
Stay
I know you don't
wanna face it
But you don't
wanna make it stay
Now your bags are all packed
and you're ready to leave
I know that it's
mostly because of me
But you still have a hole
that you're trying to fill
And regardless of where
you go, you never will
But I know that you're hiding
from what you keep inside
That there's no distraction
that you haven't tried
You're scared to be loved,
afraid it's too much
So you run to the next thing
But it's never enough
'Cause you are scared
of your darkness
Afraid of your pain
But you'll never see flowers
if you don't let it rain
I know that you're broken
I'm incomplete too
But if you'll heal with me
my love I'll heal with you
Stay
Stay
Don't go anywhere 'cause
you're worth it, I swear
Stay
How'd it go?
Those lights look good, right?
I fell off the
ladder three times...
That was a nice song.
I meant it.
What happens when the song ends?
You mean it then?
[Joe] I'm not good at that.
But I've tried running
and wherever you run,
there you are.
I can't make you stay.
But I'm done trying
to make you leave.
So if you're ready to be home,
Do it.
It's not that easy
for some people.
But it's possible.
And it's worth it.
We're just gonna end
up right back here.
[Joe] There are
worse places to be.
[Laughing]
What?
Well, I had this thing planned.
What thing?
[Joe] Ah, it was cheesy anyway.
[Allison's Song
on Cheap Speakers]
Oh no. This, this
isn't cheesy at all.
This is exactly how I
saw my evening going.
It made a lot more
sense in my head.
Why's that?
If you were here with
me now I'd get lost
Doesn't matter.
In that look in your eyes
and the spaces between us
We would be fine and
you'd tell me no lies
And the clouds
would roll back
For the sunshine to greet us
If you should go, there's
one thing that I hope
Please don't follow my road
'Cause I've seen
where it takes you
You'll wall up your
heart, part by part
'Til you stand in
the dark, in the cold
Safe but forever alone
'Cause some things are
broken too much to be mended
Put back or repaired, there's
no more use pretending
We were just kids way
back when now we're grown
And the house that we
built is no longer a home
We know in our hearts
that we've fallen apart
Maybe it's better
to stay that way
As we learn to
live and let go
[Dom] So wait, they knew
each other this whole time?
Wow.
Why does no one
tell me these things?
But if you should stay, I
can't say what's in store
There's ghosts in our hearts
It'll take time to beat 'em
And by now we know we
can't heal on our own
So take my hand and maybe
We'll finally know
freedom from this
To put us back together
there's not enough glue
So let's take up our pieces
and make something new
We were just kids way
back when now we're grown
And the house that we
built is no longer home
Please rest now you're home
and the road gets no better
Let loose your load and the
storms that you've weathered
So if this is goodbye then
I'll take one last time
To get lost in that
look in your eyes
And let better
things fall together
[Music]
Three, two, one
Action!
God only knows what I'd be
Nothing, nothing's going on.
[Inaudible]
[Actor] Nina that
was incredible!
[all cheering]
[Inaudible]
[All laughing]
- I actually didn't mean to.
- This is the same thing
that you would buy at Bassett's.
[Actor] Okay.
Aw, hi there.
- Hi little fish.
- Wow!
[Cameraman] You just
went in the lake,
in 32 degree weather.
What are you gonna do now?
Take a warm shower
and then get back in,
'cause it was fun.
[cameraman laughing]
And one, two, three.
One, two, three.
Three step turn, pose. Oh!
[all laughing]
I crushed it. I crushed it.
[hands clapping]
[Inaudible]
[all laughing]
Get that same [Inaudible].
[Cameraman] There you go.
All right.
[Allison laughing]
Did that do something
to your pedals?
[Allison] Yeah, it does.
- It does?
- Yes.
Glad we're doing this
for the first time
- in the dark.
- Surreal.
- Okay.
- Oh God.
There we go, we're moving.
It's working!
[Allison] It's dark.
[all laughing]
Wait, are you breaking?
[all laughing]
That was exhilarating.
[all laughing]
I feel like I've
lived a hundred lives.
[gentle upbeat music]
[David] 'Cause the
chorus is major,
so that's a good transition.
Yeah.
That will walk us back into...
Ooh.
I just got chills.
[both laughing]
[David] It's a good song.
[Bagpipe playing]
