[Simon] Mother Earth must be cured.
(dirt crunches)
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good
must prevail.
[Lori] Mother Earth must be cured!
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit!
That which is good must prevail!
Mother Earth must be cured
Lori! Lori!
[Lori] Must fight the angry
spirit! That which is good
Lori, it's Sheriff
Howe. You remember me?
Must be cured!
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit!
That which is good must prevail!
Mother Earth must be cured!
(eerie music plays)
You know her, Sheriff?
Yeah. Lori Coker.
She's the town librarian.
(whispering voices chanting)
(tense drumming music plays)
[Wade] No! God!
I need you, I need you, I need you.
Come back!
Come back, come back, come
back, come back, come back.
Come back.
(Wade groans)
(ominous music plays)
(Wade sighs)
(gentle music plays)
(phone beeps)
[Answering Machine] You
have one unheard message.
First unheard message.
[Brian] Wade, it's Brian.
Listen, I know you decided
to take a few months off,
and I can't blame you,
considering, you know,
what you've been through.
But we're a bit stumped down here.
I got this young woman
came in. Suicide attempt.
She doesn't respond at
all. Not a word to anyone.
I wouldn't bother you,
except I don't know where else to turn.
If you could come down just
to take a look at her case,
maybe give me a bit of advice.
You know? Just as a consultant.
[Answering Machine] End of
message. Delete, press seven.
(phone beeps)
(gentle music continues)
Brian. Wade. Have her file ready.
I'll be there in an hour. Yeah.
(melancholy music plays)
[Answering Machine] First saved message.
[Anne] Wade, I need to start
by saying that I love you.
I love you more than you'll ever know.
So please don't blame yourself for this.
I just can't, I can't, I
can't live with this tumor.
[Brian] Yeah, if you
can get that ordered up
sometime next week, that's fine.
It's no rush. Come on in.
Yeah, that'd be fine. All right.
Hey, thanks. Thanks a lot.
Appreciate it. Wade. Thanks for coming in.
Sure, no problem. You have that file?
Yeah. Yeah.
Hey, as I said on the phone,
we're really stumped by this.
I can see you've been
doing some research.
Yeah. Sheriff Howe said that
she was chanting something.
Something Native American?
Yeah.
Howe shared his body cam footage with me,
and I'm trying to translate it.
Lori Coker.
[Brian] Mhmm.
Her name's familiar.
Her uncle is a tribal
elder. Simon Coker.
You think that's significant?
I think her ancestry is the key.
Something in her family history?
No. Deeper, further back.
I think it's something tribal.
Historical.
(ominous music plays)
She tried to kill herself.
Suicide note?
No. She hasn't said a word to anyone.
We're still waiting for the
lab results to come back.
But Wade, she's a healthy,
fit, 24-year-old woman.
No prior history of mental illness.
Well, I'll see what I can do.
Let's take a walk.
I want to see her.
She's in the observation room.
Don't expect much. I've been
observing her for a few hours.
I've found no answers.
Has she eaten?
[Brian] Oh, some. Mostly
desserts, some peaches.
Other fruits.
Huh? She wants sugar.
I suppose.
You think that has anything to do
with the way that she's been
Dr. Wills, Mr. Gillespie is refusing
to take his medication again.
Excuse me, Wade. I'll try to
make it as quick as possible.
(ominous music plays)
(latch clicks)
Hi, Lori.
(door shuts)
My name is Wade.
Look, I just have one
question for you. Why?
Why?
Why what?
[Wade] Why did you try to kill yourself?
Why do you care?
My wife.
She killed herself last year,
and I need to know why
someone would want to do that.
I don't know what was inside her heart.
I don't even know what was inside mine.
[Wade] The police body cams picked up
what you were saying.
It was some kind of chant.
Dr. Wills discovered that it
was a Native American prayer.
Do you remember any of that?
Maybe if you heard it.
(paper rustles)
"Mother Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail."
(Lori slams table)
I was Ogema Kwedake!
I was supposed to kill the Napnawen.
And now, people will die,
and the world will burn.
Wade, get out! Get her! Hold her still!
Hold her!
You shouldn't have gone
in there without me, Wade.
You've spent hours trying
to get through to her.
I'm in there for two minutes
and she breaks wide open.
She's raving like a lunatic.
She's communicating, Brian,
and if you wanna find out
what she's trying to say,
you get me back on staff.
I can't just snap my fingers
and get you reinstated.
Fine. Fine. Keep reading
your history books.
Maybe they have all the answers.
Okay. Hold up, hold up. I'll do my best.
But to be honest, there
are some board members
who are pushing
to have your leave of
absence become permanent.
You're a psychiatrist,
Brian. Hypnotize them.
Good to have you back, buddy.
(Wade knocks)
[Jean] What?
Dr. Yost?
[Jean] My friends call me Jean.
Jean.
You're not my friend.
[Wade] Well, thank goodness for that.
Can I help you with something?
As a matter of fact, yes.
There was a psych patient, Lori Coker.
Have you finished running
her blood samples yet?
No. Backlog. Short-staffed. Overwhelmed.
That describes every
department in this hospital.
Except for yours, apparently.
You seem to have plenty
of time for chitchat.
It's for Dr. Wills.
Can't you put a rush
Brian? I like Brian.
[Wade] Good. Great. So, you'll do it?
For Brian? Sure.
Can I give you my business card
so you can call me with the test results?
Sure. Bye.
Thank you, Dr. Yost.
[Jean] Call me Jean.
(crickets chirping)
(ominous music plays)
(Wade sighs)
(keyboard taps)
(phone buzzes)
Wade here.
[Jean] Wade. This is Jean
from the hematology lab.
I have those results
you were asking about.
So what'd you find out?
Well, there's something
definitely unusual
about Lori Coker.
What is it?
[Jean] There's an unusual
amount of parathyroid hormone
in her bloodstream.
Hyperparathyroidism?
[Jean] Maybe,
but there's no mention of
enlarged parathyroid glands
in her medical records.
Plus, the parathyroid
hormone dissolves calcium.
Usually with this kind of levels
that I found in Ms. Coker,
there's a significant amount of bone loss.
But in this case,
she's perfectly healthy.
Right. Right.
Rather than dissolving her own bone mass,
the hormone is simply
circulating in her bloodstream,
as if it's waiting.
What do you know about Bone Hill?
[Jean] Bone Hill?
Well, I know that when I was a kid,
we dared each other to
go up there on Halloween.
I mean, I always
chickened out though. Why?
No reason.
Would you pass on this
information to Dr. Wills,
and tell him that I'd like
to meet with him tomorrow?
I'd do it myself, but I
have a lot to do tonight.
[Jean] Oh, and I don't? Remember?
Backlog. Shorthanded. Overwhelmed.
But I thought we were friends now.
Fine. But you owe me dinner.
Thank you, doctor.
[Jean] It's Jean.
Thank you, Jean.
(ominous music continues)
(dirt crunches)
(insects chirping)
Ah, damn it.
(Wade grunts)
Damn!
God.
Evening, Wade.
Barney?
What are you doing up here?
Just a little bit of research.
Research?
[Wade] Yeah.
I'm consulting on Lori Coker's case.
Hmm. That's funny.
That's why I'm up here.
I wanted to make sure
none of these other kooks
try to off themselves up here, you know?
Oh, shit. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to
It's okay.
Bring that up.
[Wade] Barney, that's
the reason why I'm working
on Lori's case.
I'm trying to put the past behind me.
It's good to get out in nature.
See the buck rub, the buck scrape,
run into a mountain lion, see a bear.
Get off the beaten path,
get in the thick of it.
They don't go where we do.
They go where they want to go.
That's where they live, you know?
And by the way, there's
a trail right over there.
Crap. There's a trail?
[Sheriff] Yeah.
I'd recommend you use it on the way down.
Good advice.
Just take it easy up here. Be careful.
I will.
(ominous music plays)
(leaves rustle)
(insects chirping)
(Wade grunts)
(Wade shouts)
(dramatic music plays)
(fox calls)
(crow caws)
Continue the treatment,
but cut the dosage in half
from what we were giving him.
Brian. Brian. Hey, Brian. Come on.
Wade. Any more blood tests
you wanna order using my name?
[Wade] Look Brian, I'm sorry,
but did you see the test results?
Yeah. I'll admit they were fascinating.
And hyperparathyroidism is
known to cause depression.
Except this isn't
hyperparathyroidism, is it?
It's something different.
Let's not get too excited.
It could simply be a deviation.
Or it could be something
else at work in her blood.
Brian. Brian.
There was no history
of hyperparathyroidism
in her medical records.
Nothing to indicate any blood diseases
or glandular disorders
She's delusional, Wade.
No, there's something more to it.
I think that underneath all
of that psychosis and trauma,
there's a truth.
And you want to find it?
Yes.
Well, you may get your wish.
The board has agreed to
review your reinstatement.
Mm.
Is the 13th okay?
A week from tomorrow? That's fine.
But I'd like to see Lori before then.
When?
This afternoon.
- Fine.
- [Wade] Great.
In the meantime, I thought
I would go visit her uncle.
Try to get a little more background
into this Native American
chant she was saying.
That's a good idea.
Get some more insight into
her particular psychosis.
Exactly.
What happened to the back
of your neck, by the way?
Oh, it's just a nasty scratch.
[Brian] Hey, you know, Jean
was very impressed with you.
She's single, and...
What?
[Wade] Too soon, Brian.
It's been a year, Wade.
Yeah. And a year is too soon.
That's not what you
tell one of your patients.
(ominous music plays)
(machine beeps)
(Lori pants)
(dramatic drumming music plays)
(fire crackles)
[Simon] Made you coffee.
Oh, thanks. I need it.
Thanks again for seeing me, Mr. Coker.
Call me Simon.
Mm. Please call me Wade.
Rough day, Wade?
I just haven't been
sleeping very well lately.
Nightmares?
More like memories.
Because of your work at St. Lucien's.
You and your team deal
with the spiritual realm.
It's gotta be difficult.
It is.
And that brings me to my visit today.
Lori?
[Wade] Yeah. Would you read her file?
When the sheriff found
her up on Bone Hill,
she was repeating a phrase over and over.
It was like some kind of a chant.
"Mother Earth must be
cured. Chief of the hill."
[Wade] I was hoping maybe
you'd heard it before.
The mad woman of Ogema Kwedake.
Come again?
Prayer of the hill
chief. It's an old myth.
Any idea where Lori would've heard that?
Not from me or any other elder.
She's a librarian. Maybe
she read it in a book?
She wasn't gonna find that
prayer in no book, Wade.
Well then, how did she know the words?
Where did she hear them?
Perhaps from the Ogema Kwedake itself.
When Ogema Kwedake chooses a host,
it provides that person
with secret knowledge.
But where does this Ogema
Kwedake even come from?
And how does it choose its host?
(ominous music plays)
(fire crackles)
I will tell you a story, doctor.
But don't expect a happy ending.
In ages past, when men
first settled in this area,
two brothers came of age and
set out into the wilderness
to seek visions from the spirits.
Both sat atop of the Bone Hill
and opened themselves
up to the spirit world.
On the fifth day of their
meditations, a miracle occurred.
(eerie drumming music plays)
Nanabush, the elder brother of mankind,
emerged from Bone Hill
and offered each brother
great power and knowledge.
(fire blasts)
[Simon] The righteous
brother grew stronger,
as he shared his gifts with his people
and ensured their safety and well being.
They called him Ogema Kwedake,
which means Lord of the Hill.
The selfish brother used his
gifts only for his own gain.
They began to call him Pekanye
Napnewen, the dark spirit.
His inhumane hunger only
satisfied by human bones.
As days went by,
the corrupted brother grew
more and more demonic.
(Napnewen roars)
(club smashes)
Even as Napnewen's power grew,
his fear for the Ogema
Kwedake grew even stronger.
For in this brother,
this soul of humanity and
nobility had surrendered.
Nanabush returned and
spoke ancient secrets
to the Ogema Kwedake,
telling him how to stop
Napnewen's rampage.
(dramatic drumming music continues)
(creatures roar)
(knife slices)
[Simon] During the harvest moon,
the Ogema Kwedake confronted
Napnewen atop the Bone Hill,
and there they battled,
locked in a life and death struggle
that shook the roots of the world.
The Ogema Kwedake finally
overcame the Napnewen
using his flint dagger
to pin the Napnewen's
tortured spirit to Bone Hill,
and sealed him inside using his own blood
and the words of power
he learned from Nanabush.
The good brother's spirit left his body,
destined forever more to guard Bone Hill,
and ensure his brother's spirit
would never again torment mankind.
To this day, his restless spirit
passes the mark of the
Ogema Kwedake onto others,
cursing them to spill
their blood upon Bone Hill.
For only through the
Ogema Kwedake's sacrifice
will the Napnewen be imprisoned.
There's no telling when
the Napnewen will stir.
And there's no telling
when the Ogema Kwedake
will be needed again.
What happens if the Ogema
Kwedake doesn't perform
the ritual?
The Napnewen takes over the host,
driving out the Ogema Kwedake.
The Ogema Kwedake then seeks another.
So, since Lori didn't finish the ritual
It's just a legend.
[Wade] I didn't say
I believed it, Simon.
But I'm pretty sure Lori does.
She would probably start to believe
she's becoming this...
Napnewen.
And someone else would be chosen
to be the Ogema Kwedake, right?
Yes.
And they're usually identified by a mark
on the back of the neck.
(ominous music plays)
He or she will start to see things.
Hear things. Things from the spirit world.
Thank you for looking after her, doctor.
Of course.
Oh, Wade, one more thing.
What?
It's papers from 1923.
Just read it.
"Late Sunday night,
police shot and killed
suspected murderer, Robert
Whitmer, atop Bone Hill.
At approximately 2:38 AM,
deputies discovered Whitmer on the hill,
where he had apparently
just killed his sixth victim
using a ritual flint dagger.
Coroner reports show that the
other five victims had died
under unusual and grotesque circumstances.
Their bones had been...
"Their bones had been crushed
while they were still alive."
The person chosen to
replace Lori as Ogema Kwedake,
he would have until the last harvest moon
to perform the ritual.
Or else?
Or else Napnewen is
released upon the world,
devouring everything that's good.
But it's just a legend, right?
Let me show you something, Wade.
We found eight of these this
month. And Lori took one.
Where did you get those?
From the Earth.
Same as you.
(ominous music continues)
(high pitched ringing echoes)
(books thud)
You did that.
What?
(distorted voice echoes)
You did that.
(Lori gasps)
You did that.
(Lori screams)
(Velcro scratches)
What's happening to me?
She screamed and you came in.
Hey, Lori, it's Dr.
Wills. Everything's okay.
See? You're safe.
But you aren't.
Up her dosage of
Aripiprazole to 10 milligrams.
And get her ready for her
session with Dr. Dygert.
Ogema Kwedake.
[Wade] Lori, Dr. Wills
wanted me to show you
some of these Rorschach cards.
A bunch of butterflies and
blobs, as far as I'm concerned.
But let's give it a try.
Perfectly respectable
psychoanalytic method there,
Dr. Dipshit.
Does this remind you of anything?
Do you see anything here?
How about this one?
How about this one?
(dramatic music plays)
(Lori screams)
(lights crackle)
Lori? Lori? Lori, what's wrong with you?
Brian, get in here!
Sarah, get Dr. Hansen down here, stat!
[Wade] Oh my God.
Laurie, Brian's coming.
(Lori thuds)
Brian!
You are the Ogema Kwedake.
I am the Napnewen. How I
missed you, my brother.
You have been chosen to be Ogema Kwedake.
I look forward to dying
atop Bone Hill with you.
Lori. Oh my God. Lori, Lori, Lori?
What the hell was that?
[Wade] The Napnewen.
Her heart rate seems to be normal.
[Dr. Hansen] Yeah,
her pupils are dilated.
Brian, what's going on?
Some kind of a seizure.
Do we know what happened?
I upped her dose of
Aripiprazole 10 milligrams.
Could that do it?
No, no, no. That's
doubtful. Pulse is fine.
But I would like a CT scan.
Yeah, we can keep an eye on her vitals.
Let's get her back to her room.
[Brian] Thanks, Joe.
[Dr. Hansen] Yeah, it's
all right, buddy. Come on.
[Wade] Brian. You saw it?
I don't know what I saw.
Those words that she said.
Yes. He spoke those exact same words.
Ogema Kwedake and Napnewen.
What is it?
It's an old native legend.
So, you think that Lori incorporated it
as part of her psychosis?
I don't know. He said it
wasn't a very well known legend.
Maybe it'd be better if you
just backed off of this case.
What?
She's obviously fixated on you.
It could be dangerous for both of you.
I am the only one
that she's opened up to.
[Brian] Still, a cooling off period
might not be a bad idea.
I could take over for a while.
Then, when it looks as if she's ready,
then I can hand it back to you.
[Jean] Dr. Dygert.
How's research coming?
Jean. Wade, you've met
Jean before, haven't you?
Say, I just remembered I'm
gonna be working late tonight.
And Judy and I won two free
dinners at Territorial Brew Pub.
I hate to see a good meal go to waste.
So, hey, dinner on us?
Well, I've never been there.
[Brian] Then it's a date.
Wade will meet you there at six o'clock.
Sure. Six o'clock sounds good.
[Jean] Great.
That'll gimme a chance to
wash the formaldehyde smell
outta my hair.
(Brian laughs)
Maybe give me some warning
next time you decide to play matchmaker.
Why? So you can make some
excuse to back out of it?
You know I'm just gonna go
home and call her and cancel.
That's too bad.
You know, personal interaction like this
could go a long way to
convincing the board
that you're ready to be reinstated.
You're blackmailing me?
No, no, no, no. Nothing
like that. This is extortion.
Oh, come on, Wade. Free
food. You can't beat it.
I don't know.
Maybe it would be good for
me to have a night out,
especially after everything
that happened today.
See, that's the spirit.
And don't worry about Lori.
I'll keep an eye on her.
All right.
(diners chatter)
(mellow music plays)
Dining alone?
Oh no, there's gonna be two.
Can I get a cup of coffee?
[Waitress] Yeah, I'll be right back.
Thanks.
(ominous music plays)
What do you see in this one, Lori?
What about this one?
[Waitress] Another cup of coffee, sir?
Yeah, sure.
What about this one?
(Wade pants)
(ominous music plays)
(Wade groans)
Lori, you okay?
Okay, okay. Okay. I'm sorry.
All right? We started too soon.
You obviously need your rest.
The Napnewen!
(phone buzzes)
Yeah.
[Jean] Wade, it's Jean.
I have those. Yeah, I'm
sorry I'm not there.
But I have those results that you wanted.
Now there is something definitely unusual
about Lori Coker.
Wade.
[Jean] Yes, she has a...
Wade? Wade?
Wade?
(ominous music plays)
[Brian] Talk to me,
Lori. What do you see?
Ogema Kwedake.
Much pain waits for you.
You're not my wife.
You must fight the Napnewen.
You're not my wife.
You must fight.
You're not my wife!
(Wade shouts)
Wade!
(diner growls)
Who are you?
(equipment clatters)
[Brian] Get her! Get her held down!
[Speaker] What's going on in there?
Wade, answer me!
Who are you?
(waitress growls and mumbles)
Wade!
(woman screams)
Who are you? What do you
want? What do you want?
(ominous music continues)
[Diner] Someone call 911 now!
(machines beeping)
No one enters or leaves this room
without my okay.
Yes, doctor.
[Lori] Please wake up.
Please.
[Wade] Why can't I stay asleep?
[Lori] You have much work to do.
[Wade] Lori. What are you doing here?
And where the hell is here?
This is the true face of Bone Hill.
Each of these bodies represents
a victim of the Napnewen.
Each was an innocent life.
Life snuffed out by a power
you cannot begin to comprehend.
You will know such sorrows.
[Wade] You were supposed
to be the Ogema Kwedake.
Yes, but when I failed
to spill my blood,
the Ogema Kwedake abandoned me.
I'm the first host to fail in generations.
[Wade] None of this is real.
[Lori] You must sacrifice yourself
before the Napnewen returns.
[Wade] It's a delusion.
[Lori] Listen to me, doctor.
[Wade] It's nothing but a dream.
Got to wake up.
[Lori] Wade, no!
[Wade] Got to wake up.
[Lori] Wade! No!
Wake up!
What do we have here?
[Paramedic] Not sure.
He's gone catatonic.
Give me 10 milligrams of risperidone.
Damn. It's Wade Dygert. Find
Dr. Wills and get him here.
I believe he's with another patient.
Wake up!
Well, he's responding
well to the risperidone.
His vitals are all back to normal.
Any idea what caused it?
Well, could be the cut on his neck.
Could be an infection.
I sent some blood to the lab for tests.
Hey, Joe, keep an eye on him for me.
Well, yeah. Happy to.
Wade Dygert's had enough
tragedy in his life.
(birds chirp)
(Wade gasps)
Where am I? Where am I?
[Brian] Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Land of the living, thank God.
Brian. Brian, what happened?
Dr. Hansen feels it
was a severe infection
from the cut on the back of your neck.
They're still running some tests.
You'll be on your feet soon.
No, I can't stay here.
I gotta go. I gotta go.
[Brian] No, no, no.
Where's Lori? Where's Lori?
Lori's gone.
Strangely enough, she had
some kind of a severe episode
about the same time they brought you in,
and then, like magic, she's fine.
What are you talking about?
How can someone go from being
psychotic to fine overnight?
We felt that her medication was off,
and her progress was significant.
It's too soon, Brian. Lori
Coker needs psychiatric care.
[Brian] Once we moved her to Thorazine,
her progress was tremendous.
The gains I made with her
were phenomenal, Wade.
I thought you'd be happy about this.
Happy?
Happy that a delusional,
suicidal young woman
is out on the streets?
Listen, she's coming
in for regular sessions.
It's not as if we just
cut her loose, Wade.
We're simply moving her
from the hospital setting
back to her family.
She needs to be here.
[Brian] All right, take it easy.
You need your rest.
If you're feeling up to it later,
you can sit in on our session later today.
Lori would be more than
happy to see you, I'm sure.
You know, she credits
you with her recovery.
I'd like to see her too.
Strangely enough, we found this on you
when they brought you in.
I'm afraid I'm gonna have to hold onto it
until you're discharged.
Hey, get your rest.
Forget about Lori Coker.
(ominous music plays)
[Wade] "Dear Dr. Dygert",
I was sorry to hear about your illness.
I hope you get well soon.
Thank you for everything
you've done for me.
"Your friend, Lori Coker."
(phone rings)
Osion County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff Howe speaking. How may I help you?
Barney, it's Wade.
[Sheriff] Yeah. Hey, how you doing?
I heard you were in the hospital.
I hope it's nothing serious.
[Wade] It's just a little
infection. Nothing serious.
Barney, look, I need your help.
They're releasing the Coker
girl from the hospital today.
Brian thinks she's shown
improvement, but I have my doubts.
Look, could you go over to her house
and just make sure everything's okay?
I can send Hopkins over there.
[Wade] No. Barney, I want you to do it.
You know what to look for.
You've had experience with...
You've had experience with suicides.
Yeah. Yeah, I understand.
Okay. I'll check on her.
You take care of yourself, Wade.
Will do. Thanks.
(ominous music continues)
Anne, wake up! Anne, oh my God.
Anne, come on. Don't
do this. Don't do this.
Come on. Don't do this. Oh
my God! Wake up! Oh my God!
[Jean] I'm sorry I stood you up.
Shorthanded. Backlogged.
Overwhelmed.
Yeah.
Look, I appreciate it. I really do.
But it's just an infection. I'm fine.
I'm totally fine.
That's not what it sounded like to me.
Yeah.
Honestly, I don't remember
much about last night.
I think I was having some kind
of a dream. Lori was there.
Sounded more like a nightmare to me.
Why don't we just
call it dinner theater?
That's not funny, Wade.
[Wade] I'm sorry.
But truly, there's nothing to worry about.
Really.
Well, better wait for
your blood test to come back
before we say that.
Of course.
Be sure to take your pills.
You're the doctor.
(machines beep)
(ominous music plays)
(Wade sighs)
(radio chatter crackles)
(insects chirp)
(Simon knocks)
Everything all right in there?
Just wanna let you know
that I'm glad you're back.
We're gonna get through this.
I'm gonna head upstairs.
Call it a night. I love you, kiddo.
(radio chatter crackles)
Lori's on the move.
(car starts)
(coyotes howling)
(leaves crunching)
(Lori pants)
(ominous music continues)
(coyotes howl)
Damn coyotes.
(Napnewen growls)
(Wade pants)
(ominous music plays)
[Doctor] I swear I'd never seen
anything like it before, Joe.
Like, the damn bones were
completely crushed to powder.
All of them?
Every single one.
It's impossible.
[Doctor] I went to med school
for a very, very long time,
but this is a first, even for me.
(bag unzips)
(doctor coughs)
Geez. Oh my God.
[Doctor] We called in
an airlift for Bronson.
Oh God.
[Brian] Dygert.
Barney. No.
Come on. Let's get you
back to your room, buddy.
No! No!
(Wade sobs)
Who did this to him?
[Dr. Hansen] As soon as we
find out, we'll let you know.
But in the meantime, you're
just in the way, buddy.
Don't treat me like a patient, Joe.
This is not a psychiatric episode, Wade.
(somber music plays)
(Wade gasps)
[Paul] Morning, doc.
I'm special agent Paul
Berlin from the FBI.
Dr. Hanson tells me
that you know our boneless
victim down in the morgue.
What can I do to help?
How well do you know Sheriff Howe?
He was one of my best friends.
When my wife killed herself,
he was there for me.
[Paul] Do you have any idea
why he'd be up by Bone Hill last night?
I don't know.
Unless he was following Lori.
Lori?
Lori Coker. She was a
former patient of mine.
I asked him to keep an eye on her.
She had tried to kill
herself on Bone Hill.
Do you know where I could find her?
I'm sure the records
department has her address,
but based on what happened to Barney,
I don't think Lori is
physically capable of
No, no, no, no, no. Of course not.
But she may have seen something.
Here's my card.
If you think of anything, give me a call.
Sure.
(ominous music plays)
So, I can pencil you in for
2:30 Wednesday. Sound good?
Sounds good.
Oh.
Oh, if you guys are done,
I need to borrow Lori
for another blood sample.
I'm sorry. I've really
Oh, oh, oh, what? A
phobia of needles, suddenly?
We can discuss this in our next session.
It'll take just a second, honey.
Is this really necessary?
I mean, I feel fine.
[Jean] Just to be safe, Lori.
Your last blood test
had some unique results,
so I just wanna make sure
we get a good test result this time.
[Brian] You've had
your blood drawn before.
It's no big deal.
There, there. Easy, Lori.
Just a few moments of discomfort.
There we go.
[Brian] There. Easy and done.
[Jean] I'll run some tests
later today. All right.
Now, they're waiting for you in radiology.
They're gonna give you a CAT scan
to check your parathyroid
gland, just as a precaution.
(ominous music plays)
(Lori pants)
Sorry about your friend.
(Napnewen growls)
What? What?
Hey, hey, hey. Good news.
I pulled some strings.
Got your ticket home.
That's great, Brian. Thanks.
The blood tests, they
haven't come back yet,
but if anything shows up, we'll call you.
Okay. Thanks.
Oh, by the way, here's
that dagger thing back.
Oh yeah. Thank you.
[Brian] We'll call you.
Wade. Hey.
I know you've had a lot going on,
but if you need to talk?
Pity therapy, Brian? I don't think so.
I'm not offering therapy,
Wade. I'm offering friendship.
You know, friends listen
to one another. Hmm?
Right. So, listen to me
when I say I'll be fine.
I just need a little peace and quiet.
I understand, Wade.
I just want you to know if you need.
It's all right.
Thanks.
If you need. All right?
Thanks.
(ominous music plays)
(phone buzzes)
Hello?
Wade, it's Jean.
I just ran Lori's second
set of blood tests.
There is something very, very wrong.
What is it?
[Jean] She has an
alarming level of calcium
in her bloodstream.
Well, did they do a CT scan?
[Jean] Yeah.
Her glands are enlarged
to a frightening degree,
and there's absolutely
no sign of bone loss.
She must be getting that
calcium from someplace.
Are you in the lab right now?
[Jean] Yes. And Wade,
there's something else.
I ran your test too.
You have an elevated level of parathyroid,
just like Lori's first test.
Oh God.
(lights buzz)
Oh, cheap fluorescent
bulbs. Not again. Jeez.
(ominous music plays)
Oh, God forbid we clean up. Which one?
Ah.
Nothing.
(switches flick)
(car rumbles)
(tense music plays)
(Wade gasps)
(Wade wails)
Jean?
(Wade gasps)
(Wade screams)
(Wade screams)
(ominous music plays)
Lori.
Lori!
You said the victim was
dead by the time you arrived.
[Wade] Yes.
And Lori Coker. She was there as well.
Yes.
[Paul] And you claim that she appeared
totally and completely
Inhuman.
You see, doc,
I was watching Ms.
Coker's house last night,
just on a hunch that
she had something to do
with Howe's death.
She never left all night.
You wouldn't have seen her.
Understand, agent Berlin,
that Wade was just
released from the hospital
after suffering from a severe infection.
He may be having a relapse,
or reaction to the medication.
Then his account is suspect at best.
As his alibi.
[Brian] Agent Berlin, are you suggesting
that Dr. Dygert is somehow
involved with this?
What I'm suggesting, Dr. Wills,
is that your buddy seriously considers
getting a good lawyer.
(ominous music plays)
Wade, I'm worried about you.
I didn't kill anyone, Brian.
[Brian] I know that.
I'm concerned about your fixation on Lori.
We both know that she's not capable
of doing something like this,
but whoever is
It's the Napnewen.
Wade, that was a part of Lori's psychosis.
No. No, it's not. Don't you see?
Lori had elevated levels of parathyroid
when she was brought in,
and then, when she was
magically somehow cured,
her parathyroid gland swelled,
and her bloodstream was
flooded with calcium.
When Lori was the Ogema Kwedake,
she was supposed to kill
herself on Bone Hill
to prevent the release
of a great and terrible
and powerful spirit.
The Napnewen.
I think the parathyroid
hormone in her blood
was supposed to somehow
imprison the Napnewen,
even for a short time.
But when she didn't kill herself,
the Napnewen became too powerful,
and the Ogema Kwedake left her body,
and searched for a new host.
Me.
[Brian] Oh, and what's
supposed to happen now, Wade?
Are you supposed to kill her or yourself?
I have to challenge her.
I have to challenge her atop Bone Hill,
the same way the original Ogema
Kwedake and Napnewen fought
all those generations ago.
I have to kill the Napnewen
and then kill myself,
sealing it in the earth with my blood.
Until the next Ogema Kwedake is chosen.
Yes. Yes. Exactly. This
happened 100 years ago.
In 1923, Robert Whitmer
Robert Whitmer was a mass murderer.
No! I believe that he was
his generation's Ogema Kwedake.
And when the police shot
him, his blood spilled,
trapping it in the earth
for another 100 years.
Wade, do you understand what it is
that you're saying here?
Do you understand the deep, dark path
you're going down here?
The pit that you're falling into.
You're losing everything.
What's gonna happen now, Wade?
Lori was right all along.
I have to do it, Brian.
[Brian] And I have to do this, Wade.
What? You...
Saving your life, Wade.
(ominous music plays)
Sarah, I need two attendants and a gurney
in my office, please.
Thanks.
[Ogema Kwedake] Mother
Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
Who are you?
[Ogema Kwedake] Mother
Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
What do you want?
[Ogema Kwedake] Mother
Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
I don't understand.
[Ogema Kwedake] Mother
Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
Mother Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
(Wade groans)
Damn it, Brian.
(ominous music plays)
(lights buzzing)
(flesh squelches)
(footsteps tapping)
(Napnewen growls)
(flesh squelches)
Lori!
Lori!
(Napnewen growls)
Oh my God. Brian! Brian!
Brian!
- Wade.
- Oh my God, Brian.
[Brian] Wade, Wade. Wade.
The dagger. The dagger.
The dagger?
The dagger.
(ominous music plays)
(Napnewen growls)
Lori. Lori.
Lori!
(Napnewen roars)
Remember this, Lori? Remember this, Lori?
God, Brian.
- I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- It's okay, Brian.
It's okay.
She's afraid of you.
She's afraid of you.
It's my blood.
It could hurt her.
Oh my God. That's it. That's it.
Nobody else has to die.
(Napnewen growls)
Nobody has to die. Nobody has to die.
Berlin suspects you already.
You gotta get outta here now.
You gotta go. Get outta here.
I can't leave you, Brian.
They'll find me. Go. Just go.
(Napnewen roars)
(Wade pants)
(tense music plays)
(tires screech)
(siren wails)
[Dispatch] Roger on
Is this all we could get?
Hey, we got calls in other counties.
[Paul] Nevermind. This'll do.
Follow me to the south entrance.
Nobody shoots until I give the orders.
We've got innocent people in there,
and I don't want anyone harmed.
[Officer] Yes, sir.
(ominous music plays)
(victim groans)
(car rumbles)
(phone buzzes)
[Anne] Wade.
Listen to me.
Listen to me. I need to
start by saying I love you.
I love you more than you'll ever know.
So, please don't blame yourself for this.
I just can't. I can't, I
can't live with this tumor.
It's changing me, turning me
into someone I don't recognize.
I don't wanna turn into a stranger.
You're everything to me,
and I don't want to become nothing to you.
Anne.
[Anne] So, this is why I'm doing it.
This is why I'm ending my
life, while it's still my life.
I love you, Wade.
Maybe someday you'll
be able to forgive me.
Maybe someday you'll understand.
I understand.
[Anne] Goodbye.
I forgive you.
(ominous music plays)
(dramatic music plays)
(Napnewen growls)
Blood must be spilled on Bone Hill.
You should have taken the trail.
It's much quicker.
You're afraid of me, aren't you?
You want to kill me,
just like all the others.
But you can't.
If you spill my blood, if it touches you,
it will weaken you.
And yet you're drawn to me.
It's a pattern, a ritual.
Like an obsessive compulsive disorder,
you must see it through,
even if it means you'll
be trapped once more.
I know how to end the suicides.
I know how to end the cycle of death.
The blood of the Ogema Kwedake
will be spilled tonight.
(dramatic drumming music plays)
Wade, you must fight.
(Wade groans)
That blood must be spilled on Bone Hill.
Mother Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
That which is good must prevail.
(Wade pants)
Oh my God. Lori. Lori.
Thank God. Thank God.
Wade.
(Napnewen roars)
(ominous music plays)
It's still here.
There must be a sacrifice, Wade.
The blood itself isn't enough.
So that's it, huh? No
loopholes, no pardons, no escape?
Wade!
Fine. Then let's do it your way.
(tense music plays)
(wind roars)
I can't. I can't do it, Lori.
It goes against everything I believe in.
Wade, you have to.
Please, Lori.
End it.
End it.
(Napnewen growls)
(tense music continues)
You need to speak the words of dream
before the knife strikes.
(gun fires)
I told you she was a killer, Wade.
[Wade] Lori, Lori, Lori!
Berlin, what have you done?
You've doomed us all.
You've doomed us all.
(ominous music plays)
Mother Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
Mother Earth must be cured.
The chief of the hill must
fight the angry spirit.
Mother Earth must be cured.
Hello, Dr. Wills.
(ominous music continues)
The nurses tell me that you're
recovering quite nicely.
Try telling that to Lori Coker.
[Paul] Oh, I was just doing
my job the best I could.
Same as you. Lori Coker was a killer.
She would've killed your friend.
Looks like you sustained
some injuries yourself.
This?
Damn thorns up on Bone Hill.
I don't mind telling you,
I hope that I never have
to go back there again.
(trolley rattles)
[Nurse] It's dinner time, Dr. Dygert.
I hope you're hungry.
I'm starving.
By the way, nurse, did
anyone ever tell you
you have lovely bone structure?
Excuse me?
You have lovely bone structure.
(nurse screams)
(upbeat rock music)
Could you think about the
(indistinct) word is in the day
And how everything
around is going wrong
And all the (indistinct)
For a job that won't
stay open for long
Can't be wrong,
there's something about
Comes from down deep inside
Why don't you step up and become it
You never know until you try
You can make (indistinct)
waiting for permission
Ain't it funny how the time goes by
Get down before you're really sorry
Sitting on your backside this way
