Cheers to Life (2025) Movie Script

[wind blowing softly]
[soft piano music playing]
[woman, narrating] Centuries
and centuries ago,
a traveler went in search
of a faraway land.
Along his journey,
he found himself at a crossroads.
He was uncertain of which path to follow.
Until it occurred to him to place a sign
with the name of the city
he had come from.
Because no one can find their destiny
without first knowing
where they came from.
It is only by understanding our past
that we can envision our future.
This story isn't about me, though.
[woman sobbing]
Hava! [Sobs]
CHEERS TO LIFE
[woman] This stone is a genuine marvel.
We have it in earrings, there's also
this bracelet, these three rings.
ONE MONTH BEFORE
But the real showstopper is the necklace.
Let me show you.
[client] That's what I want. [Chuckles]
[gasps softly]
Let's put it on?
Oh!
- [man] How much is it?
- Barely anything.
It's so beautiful, look at a that.
A vintage piece, designed in the '60s.
Oh, Teddy Bear! Hmm! I want it. [Laughs]
Who doesn't love
the nostalgic glamour of the '60s, right?
That is, if we set aside the dictatorship
and so many people
being tortured and murdered
- [client] Come on, sweetie!
- [whispers] You crazy?
[client] I really want it!
But But the hair and fashion
were something else.
You want it?
Huh, "sweetie"?
- [man] But, my love What?
- [client grunts]
- [man sighs]
- [playful guitar music playing]
[sighs]
EVICTION NOTICE
[music pauses]
[sighs deeply]
[music resumes]
[softly] Oh, man.
[pensive music playing]
DEBORAH, JSSICA, AND RAQUEL - 1998
[girl] Higher!
- Much higher!
- [younger woman] Honey!
[girl] Mom, much higher!
- Jssica.
- Jssica, it's starting to rain, honey.
We have to go. [Laughs]
My God,
that's way too high, for you, my love.
Jssica, let's stop, let's get off?
- [shrieks] Jssica!
- [older woman] Jssica!
- Sweetie!
- [younger woman] Honey!
- Mom, get her up. Jssica?
- Get up.
[younger woman] Jssica,
talk to me, please.
- [laughs] Did you see how courageous I am?
- Yeah! [Laughs]
- Courageous and very sassy. [Laughs]
- [laughs]
Look at what you are going to get
From Granny Raquel
- Look how pretty it is.
- [younger woman] Oh, cool.
- Here's a medal
- [gasps]
- for your outstanding bravery.
- [younger woman] Honey, let me tell you.
Did you know this locket was worn
by every single
courageous woman in our family?
- Did you know? Now you're one of them.
- [Jssica] Mm-hm.
[Raquel] Your mom's right.
[poignant music playing]
[takes a deep breath]
[inhales and exhales deeply]
[excited] Ooh! Someone died!
[playful guitar music playing]
[solemnly] Someone's died.
One horrid
Demon doll.
Hello! Hello, hello!
Copacabana!
- [samba music playing]
- La, la, la, la
Electric vibra
Vibrator!
[splutters]
[gags dramatically]
What else?
Uh, let's see.
[gasps] Ah!
Ohh
[soft piano music playing]
CAUTION
FRAGILE
[doorbell rings]
- Thanks for letting me come here.
- Come in.
Just don't take too long,
'cause I'm depressed.
[music fades]
This was my grandma, Miriam.
It was her stuff
I sent to the antique shop.
And here beside her
was my great-aunt, her sister, Raquel.
Did you get to know Raquel?
[Gabriel] Unfortunately not.
They were estranged.
Spent years without speaking.
Why is that?
Well
Why are you so interested in my family?
Uh, well this photograph
- This photo was cut off, wasn't it?
- [footsteps approaching]
[woman] Oh, no, no, no. Hell no.
I can't believe this. Gabriel!
What are you doing here?
What do you mean, "What am I doing here?"
This is our house, Stephanie.
Oh, no, this is not "our" house.
This is my house,
which I bought with my own money
from my own hard work.
You only made your own money
through your own work
Because I discovered you
as a photographer.
That was years ago, Gabriel. Get over it.
Neide, my dear,
please pack his bags, will you?
This is not Neide.
Then who's this random girl
in my house now?
She doesn't work for us,
alright, Stephanie?
I I actually work here
It's an antique store. Jssica.
Jssica.
This is also my house,
and I can do whatever I want to.
And there's no one
who'll ever force me out
- of our house.
- [shoes thud]
[Stephanie chuckles]
Stephanie, don't
She loves me.
See? [Grunts]
Somewhere, deep down
I really know that she loves me.
[playful music playing]
Here.
You can have it back.
Whoop!
- [flatly] Ha, ha, ha.
- Whoop!
Please stop playing around.
Whoa Oh-oh
[soft piano music playing]
- [Jssica] No!
- [Gabriel] Wait! Calm down, be careful.
- The light's about to turn green!
- [cars honking]
Come on, get up!
- You're gonna get hit by a car!
- [cars honking]
Careful, please be careful!
Do not to run her over, please!
Can you evaluate the goods
on the sidewalk instead?
- So sorry!
- [car honking]
[soft music playing]
[cars honking]
Raquel, Miriam,
and Hava.
Who's Hava?
[Gabriel] Listen, I have no idea.
But I'm sure that my Mom will know.
[scoffs]
So
Are you ready to hear this story?
A story that actually occurred right here,
in this very house,
but 50 years ago.
[narrator] Hold on.
Let me be the one to tell it.
This is my story.
Mazel tov!
[everybody] Mazel tov!
[narrator] Once upon a time,
there were three sisters,
Raquel, Miriam, and I, Hava.
I was engaged and about to get married
to a man who wasn't the love of my life.
[intriguing music playing]
I knew, in my heart of hearts,
that my decision would drive me
away from my family for good.
But I needed to follow my heart,
and my heart was his.
- [romantic piano music playing]
- Benjamin.
My dear Ben.
The one who would take me
on so many adventures in this life.
I wanna make you a promise.
No matter what might come
Our journey will always be an adventure.
Always.
I promise that too.
Come on.
[Hava chuckles]
[Gabriel's mom] And like that,
in the quiet of the night,
they ran away together.
It was such a scandal at the time.
And after your Aunt Hava
ran away [scoffs]
no-one spoke ever again.
You know, chaos ensued.
The family dynamic went sideways.
And Hava? What happened?
Oh, Hava went to live in Israel
with Benjamin.
She wanted nothing to do with anyone.
We knew absolutely nothing of her life,
until the day of the tragedy.
But what tragedy, Mom?
You were so very little,
you wouldn't remember it, son.
Remember your great-aunt Raquel?
She died in a car accident
along with your cousin Deborah.
Oh, it was horrible.
But I didn't know
Aunt Raquel had a daughter.
But she didn't have a daughter.
Deborah wasn't you Aunt Raquel's daughter.
No. Deborah, was actually Hava's.
[soft, dramatic music playing]
[panting softly]
[Gabriel] Are you okay?
[out of breath] Yeah
I'm sorry, but I have to go.
I gotta go. I'm sorry.
- Do you want some water, dear?
- So sorry.
It might help.
No?
[pensive music playing]
- [panting softly]
- [phone keys clacking]

[music fades]
[cellphone ringing]
[sleepily] Hello?
The two of us have to go to Israel.
No, no, no, no.
We've gotta go to sleep, yeah? Good night.
Hava's my grandmother.
Wasn't she Deborah's mother?
Deborah was my mom.
So, technically speaking, we're cousins.
Wait a minute. What'd you say?
I spent my whole life thinking
I was all alone in this world
only to discover
that I have two living grandparents.
I have to go to Israel and meet
these people before it's too late, get it?
Yeah, I get it.
You're saying
That you need
to reconnect with your roots?
No!
I need them to know I exist
before I lose the inheritance.
If you come with me,
I'll give you 10% of whatever I'll get.
[sarcastically] Beautifully eloquent.
And where are we gonna get the money
to go to Israel from?
[intriguing guitar flourish plays]
TIME MACHINE ANTIQUES
[door chimes jingle]
[samba music playing]
Jssica.
You and I have to talk.
Who told you?
- Was it the demon doll?
- There are cameras all around us.
It was a porcelain piece.
I'll have to take it out of your salary.
[phone rings]
But it'll do it monthly, little by little.
Hello?
Oh, hey, Jlio! How've you been, brother?
Yes, it's here.
Yeah, it's here already.
Okay, I'll be waiting.
Whenever you want.
You can just bring it in.
Huh?
Are you coming?
Oh, sure. That's great, man. Perfect then.
[intriguing music playing]
[boss chuckling]
All right, then. Bye.
Jssica!
Hey, Jssica! Where?
[music pauses]
[music resumes]
I BORROWED IT. SWEAR I'll BRING IT BACK!
[paper rustles]
[breathes deeply]
[music ends]
[funk music playing]
I was gonna kill you if you didn't come.
Who do you think I am
to turn down a free vacation?
And 30% of everything
your beloved grandparents leave you.
Ten percent of whatever
my grandparents leave me.
Twenty.
Fifteen. Why didn't you get
the seat next to me?
Well, because I prefer the aisle,
so I can go to the bathroom
when I feel like it.
- How often do you have to go?
- This is quite a long flight, Jssica.
Oh, I'm sorry now if I drink
the right amount of water every day
and have a perfect, wonderful,
and healthy urinary system.
Pull whatever face you want.
The fact is,
I'm gonna live much longer than you.
THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A FCK
- I'm gonna die.
- [plane rumbling]
I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die!
Jssica, Jssica, I'm gonna die.
For Christ's sake, talk to me!
I'm gonna die, Jessica.
Jssica, talk to me, for God's sake!
- Know what you could do to save everyone?
- What's that?
Be better!
- [both gasp]
- [Gabriel] Oh, for the love of God!
[Jssica] Oh my God! I'm poor,
I've never flown before.
- You should say it's gonna be okay!
- It's gonna be okay.
I need some meds. Anyone have any?
- I also need some meds now.
- [Gabriel] Oh, God.
- I have Zolpidem.
- You trying to drug me?
It's the classic Zolpidem con. For sure.
Are you trying to rob the little I have?
Zolpidem con-man?
- Wake him up!
- But I want the meds though. Please!
- Jesus Christ!
- Give me the Zolpidem! I need it.
Is this even normal?
[music intensifies, then fades]
[turbine whooshing]
[Gabriel snores]
[playful music playing]
[PA system dings]
Jssica, I'm still not understanding
why we can't just go straight
to Hava's house and say who you are?
If I do, they'll just think
I came here for the money.
Well, but you came here
just for the money, didn't you?
That's what grandkids do.
They always ask for money.
Yeah, but they've never had grandkids.
- Oh, alright then.
- And I've never had grandparents.
The car's here. Hey!
- Hello!
- [driver] Hello.
[Jssica] Hello!
- So annoying.
- [Gabriel] Oh, I'm annoying?
- Very much. You don't trust the process.
- [Gabriel] Yeah, your process, right?
[mellow song playing]
[man singing in Hebrew]
Look over there.
Can you understand anything at all?
[song continues]
[chuckles]
[song continues on stereo]
We're here.
[Gabriel groans]
- [Jssica] Thank you.
- [driver] Toda.
[Jssica] Toda. [Chuckles]
I totally hate tourists.
[Jssica] We're tourists.
You hate yourself?
[sighs] Jssica, I'm sleeping
in my mother's spare bedroom,
it's obvious that I do.
Oh, no. I don't think this is Ben, is it?
[chuckles forced]
Jssica, Gabriel?
- Yes.
- Here. This is for you, guys. Welcome.
- [Jssica] Oh, look! A gift!
- It's so nice to meet you.
I'm Ramirez. I'm gonna be your tour guide
for this entire trip.
You're great, Ramirez. I love you already.
- Aquarius?
- I'm Aquarius.
- Sagittarius, love. We're gonna get along.
- [chuckles]
So tell me, guys. Are you prepared? Huh?
Prepared to hop on a magical journey
between things like the past,
present, ancient cultures, holy cultures,
all the cultures.
The nightlife is something else,
you'll love it.
- Let's go?
- Let's go.
- Should I take it?
- [Jssica] Sure, thanks.
Okay, then follow me.
[strains] What's in here? [Chuckles]
[playful guitar music playing]
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Have mercy. No.
No, I beg you!
[tourists, chanting] Let's go now!
Let's go now! Let's go now!
Let's go now! Let's go now! Let's go now!
Let's go now! Let's go now!
Let's go now! Let's go now!
- Let's go now!
- Thirty percent.
I want 30%.
[tourists] Let's go now! Let's go now!
- Let's go now!
- [shushes]
- [tourists] Let's
- [clapping stops]
Ding-dong!
Shalom!
[tourists] Shalom!
Everybody welcome to Israel!
- [tourists] Whoo!
- [Ramirez] You're gonna love it, you guys.
This company was started
by Ben Rosenn, who
Who's not here now, okay? He's not here
at this time, as you can see.
But I, Ramirez, am here
and will be here till the end! Shalom?
- [cheering]
- Let's do this!
Okay! Let's go!
- Come on!
- [tourists cheering]
[playful music playing]
[Ramirez] Welcome to Israel's
most vibrant coastal city,
Tel Aviv!
Get excited! We're going to the beach!
Amazing! Look at the excitement.
Boy, for God's sake! Listen up!
Are you hearing me?
I want everyone back here
in one hour, okay?
- Especially you, ladies.
- Us?
Of course not! I'm talking to them.
The sisters. They're the ladies!
Oh, my goodness, you guys I swear.
Look at them. See those three? The nuns?
They were super late for breakfast
this morning, you wouldn't expect that.
But we can't judge, you know?
Putting together
that whole look must be difficult.
I mean, there's something on the head,
something hanging around, something
down low, one thing over the other
And Rosenn? Is that your last name?
Of course it's not.
Your last name's Ramirez, right?
No, my name's Ramirez.
Oh, yeah? What's your last name then?
It's Ramirez as well.
Hm! So you're Ramirez Ramirez.
Junior.
Who's Rosenn then?
Oh, it's Ben. Ben Rosenn, my boss.
He owns all of this.
He just doesn't come with us
to the tours, 'cause, you know,
he no longer has the physical disposition
to go up and then down,
but if a problem pops up, he appears.
[teens, together] Ramirez!
Is this a nudist beach?
No! No, my sweethearts, no.
This is not a nudist beach, okay?
For the love of
If you guys end up naked on this beach,
you're gonna cause problems for Auntie.
Don't cause problems for Auntie,
I can't handle that.
- Alright? Got it?
- [nun] Ramirez!
-I love them
-[nun] Play with us!
Those sisters are incredibly energetic.
- We need you.
- I'm going with them, 'kay?
Enjoy yourselves.
[guitar music continues]
- Come!
- [chuckles]
[mischievous Spanish guitar flourish]
No!
[energetic guitar music playing]
No! No!
What are you doing? Get out of the water!
You can't do that!
No! You two, out!
You can't do that! No!
Get out of the water! Now!
Oh, my God! C'mon!
Ah! We're creating quite the commotion.
Get out! Get out of the water!
You can't do that!
Am I gonna have to jump in?
Come on! Immediately.
And you stop filming,
what's wrong with you? Stop!
Come on! Get out!
Get out of there!
Aah! [Chuckles]
Wait here, you guys, please.
Stop here.
Listen, you can call my lawyers!
Get in, get it.
She doesn't even have a lawyer.
[Ramirez] Officer, is there any way
we can solve this?
Shit.
[car engine starts]
[music ends]
[Ramirez sighs]
Well, everything's settled.
Luckily for the two of you,
Ben's super close with the chief of police
and he explained
that it was a misunderstanding,
so, I'm finally going, 'kay?
So Ben's here?
Yeah. He's with the police chief.
I gotta go.
[footsteps depart]
Are you ready to meet the adventurer
who stole your grandmother's heart?
Imagine him coming in here
on a motorcycle.
[imitates motorcycle engine revving]
- [man sighs]
- [intriguing sting]
Huh?
[intriguing string music playing]
[grunts]
[music ends]
[Ramirez] Israel's most vibrant
coastal city
Well? What now? When are you telling him?
Not the right moment.
[Ramirez continues in background]
I do believe right now is a great moment.
[sighs] Oh, my God. Help me, please.
- Go on.
- [exhales]
I'm going.
Focus and get it.
- Yeah, focus and get it.
- Focus and get it.
[Ramirez] where people
from all walks of life
come to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.
And by night it transforms
into a night-life wonderland.
Ready to explore it? Let's do this!
It's really beautiful here.
[Ramirez continues in background]
I have been wanting to talk to you about
Something that I
I don't even know where to start from.
[chuckles nervously]
Um
Ben?
Forgive me.
I'm having some problems at home.
- Did something happen with Hava?
- She left a day ago.
[gasps softly] [whispers] Did you hear?
Wait a second. How do you know it's Hava?
- You said so.
- I did?
You told us. For sure. I heard you.
[soft music playing]
You wanna talk?
Every single Wednesday
We always have soup.
Tonight we are
about to have a soup made with
- [flatly] Lentils, yeah.
- [laughs heartily]
On the second Wednesday of every month
we always have soup made from lentils.
Hope you like it, my love.
Ben.
What if we went out?
- When?
- Now. Right away.
But, uh, it's so late.
What do you mean? It's 7:30, Ben.
Yes, but but to do what?
Who knows?
[excitedly] Maybe go for a walk,
or go out to eat, or even dance a little!
Please! Let's travel now!
But, Hava,
tonight we're supposed to have soup.
[soft music continues]
Yeah.
Second Wednesday of the month
will always be lentil soup night.
[Ben] Mm-hm.
[Jssica] Soup, really?
I know, I
I should have been less predictable.
I should've made soup with peas instead.
[chuckles politely] And tell us
what happened afterward.
[Ben] Did you notice
I added some curry today?
For crying out loud, Ben.
I can't stand
talking about soup again, Ben.
We are not that old yet, are we?
I hope you feel that way too.
Ben.
Do you remember
when we first got to Israel?
You made me a promise, didn't you?
That was a lifetime ago.
You made me a promise,
you swore that we'd never stop living life
as an adventure, from day one.
Many things have changed since then, Hava.
It's true, I know that.
But you promised me that was the one thing
that was never going to change.
Ben
Where are you? Hm?
Where is he? Where's that marvelous man?
The adventurous man
I fell in love with? Huh?
I left everything I had
so you and I could be together.
[poignant music playing]
- [Jssica] And you didn't say anything?
- What could I have said?
She was right about it.
I'm no longer the same man I was
when we got married.
I've become an old man
who likes having soup
every Wednesday night.
- Can you believe that?
- [chuckles]
Yeah, if we look at it from that angle,
I can see why she left, then.
- What the hell, Jssica?
- He said it first. I'm just agreeing.
[inhales] Ben, do you know where she went?
No idea.
But she left me a note.
[soft music playing]
[Hava] My dear Ben.
I know that our life hasn't been easy.
We've already been
through so much sadness together.
So much that you seem
to have forgotten who we were.
I need you to remember.
Look back on our
journey together this far and remember.
Remember what it's like to be happy.
With all the love in my heart,
Hava.
[music ends]
[Gabriel] Have you tried calling her?
Several times. She doesn't answer.
That can't be right. Doesn't she have
a friend who might know where she is?
- Sarah. But she also doesn't answer.
- [Jssica] Okay, let's get organized.
Here. So you think that Hava
is hooking up with this friend, Sarah?
- You nuts, Jssica?
- [Ben] Of course not.
They've been best friends for many years.
Yeah, but I'm saying that because I've had
a best friend of many years that I
Sure, alright. Are you able
to track her phone by any chance?
What are you talking about?
Well, just pass me your phone for a sec.
This is what I used to find out
about Stephanie's third lover.
Yeah. It's here.
Yeah, you do share your locations.
What? You you can see
where she is in there?
I can find her. According to GPS
Hava's in Jerusalem.
We're going to Jerusalem.
- Yeah.
- You'll come with us, and we'll find Hava.
- You should.
- You should.
Come with us.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
I like to sleep in my bed
and with my pillow.
But we also have to find Hava.
Come with us, Ben!
Just come with us, Ben!
[Jssica and Gabriel] Come with us.
[together, chanting] Ben, come with us!
Ben, come with us!
[others join in] Ben, come with us!
[Jssica] Ben comes to Jerusalem
with all of us!
[all, chanting] Ben, come with us!
Ben, come with us!
Ben, come with us!
Ben, come with us! Ben, come with us!
Safe travels, everyone.
Enjoy your trip.
Your tour guide is really great.
I thought we had him.
- See you later.
- [man] I never pictured it like this.
Ding-dong!
What if we got off and looked around?
Why don't we take advantage of the day
and enjoy this amazing sunset in the city?
- [whispers] Where are we? Where is this?
- I don't know where
[curious sting]
- In Ja Jaffa!
- [everybody] Yafo!
No, Yafo! Let's go enjoy Yafo!
For the love of God! We have a schedule.
No, I understand,
but what's an hour, guys?
- And haven't we earned it?
- We've earned it!
- [all, chanting] We've earned it!
- [Ramirez] No!
- [Gabriel] Yeah, we've earned it.
- Wait. I got my eye on you!
- [tourists] We've earned it!
- Come on!
- Ding-dong! Ding-dong! No!
- [man chuckles]
- You've earned it a little, 'kay?
- [all cheering]
Alright! Everybody off the bus,
enjoy yourselves!
Let's go, everybody. Come on, sisters.
This way. Let's go.
[chuckles] And they say
I'm not equipped for sales.
[playful song playing]
-[Gabriel] Ben! Ben, Ben, Ben,
-[Jssica] Ben!
Come with us! [Laughs]
We ended up staying in Yafo
to see what amazing things
this city has to offer.
- The restaurants.
- Yeah! The restaurants.
We've heard
that the food around here is amazing!
- There's that food What's it called?
- I've heard it's Malabi
But I'll leave it up to you.
You pick a place, and we'll go.
[woman sings upbeat song]
[Ramirez] Come on, you guys!
Everybody, come this way!
Dear sisters, you just follow me.
- [indistinct chatter]
- They wanna take a picture, Ben.
Come on.
It's that way. This way.
- Turn right.
- [Ramirez] Right!
Let's all go right here.
Come on, my dears.
- [Ben] L'chaim!
- [all] L'chaim!
[glasses clink]
Is it like a "cheers"?
L'chaim, it means, "to life."
So, "Cheers to life."
Cheers to life!
[all] Cheers to life!
- [Jssica] Alright!
- [Ben chuckles]
[Ramirez] I'll be right back. [Chuckles]
- Oh, hey.
- [Gabriel] Hey, Ben.
What was it like for you and Hava
to move here to Israel?
[exhales]
[whispers] He's about to cry.
No. I'm not gonna cry now.
[sighs deeply]
We decided to move here in 1973
meaning to start life anew.
Hava left everything behind.
Her fianc, her family
Her entire social life.
- Her inheritance, all of it.
- Her inheritance?
[whispers] Hey!
[poignant music playing]
When we first arrived here,
we were absolutely inseparable.
It was the two of us
Against the world.
Do you remember the promise we made?
[chuckles] Sure I do.
The most important thing is that
we'll always live life as an adventure.
Always!
And our adventure
is only just now starting.
Yeah.
[young Hava laughs softly]
You're gonna be a father.
[music swells]
[Jssica] She was pregnant?
And what was this child's name?
[Gabriel] Now he's definitely
about to cry.
Now he's about Ben? Hey, Ben!
Finally, I thought I'd have to keep it up
for another hour.
What? Ben?
He got tired. [Chuckles] He got tired.
I'm dead tired too, so [chuckles]
What'd you do, Jssica?
- I gave him Zolpidem.
- What Zolpidem?
Zolpidem, from the random plane guy.
- No, no, no, no.
- He said he was a crazy fuck, right?
- Really tough.
- Have you lost your mind?
- I had to find a way to take him.
- Ben? Yo, Ben?
- [Ramirez] What a great time!
- Come here I adore you
- You're the cutest!
- [Ramirez] Where has that hand been?
- Arriba, muchacho, cario.
- Stop doing that, Jssica.
[excitedly] He's decided to come with us!
[playful music playing]
[gasps] Oh, how'd you find
those amazing glasses? Oh, my word
Ben, you're killing it. I've never
seen you like this, I'm loving it.
Listen, at the end of the day,
I want those on my face, 'kay?
Make it work. Absolutely fabulous, Ben.
Move. Come.
Easy. [Groans]
Everything's good. We're chill here.
[indistinct chatter]
[Jssica chuckles]
[chatter and laughter continue]
[music continues]
[groans] Oh my God.
What now? Do we leave him?
[Gabriel, out of breath]
What d'ya wanna do?
If we leave this man alone here sleeping,
he'll wake up and think he was kidnapped.
[panicked] Yeah, he was taken, wasn't he?
We took him, didn't we?
If we hang around staring at him
all night, will it be less creepy though?
Of course not. What do you wanna do?
- What do you suggest then, tell me?
- [shushes]
- Be quiet, grab him a blanket.
- Oh, you gotta be kidding me.
[huffs]
What do they drink in Israel?
- [Gabriel] Arak! Arak!
- Arak! Oh, watch out. It's expensive.
[drunkenly] Let's toast to you,
little phony Jew.
And you're a phony cousin.
Oh, so nice. Cheers!
[slurping loudly]
- I'm not able to drink it fast. No way!
- [Gabriel coughs]
[Gabriel chuckles]
- [Jssica] Oh, wow!
- Ahh!
- It's that horrible candy.
- Jeez! What candy?
- The candy no one ever wanted.
- What?
- Overlooked by everyone.
- It's anise.
- Yep, anise!
- Anise. It really tastes like it.
- Heck, this is intense.
- [Jssica] Ugh!
It tastes bad and good at the same time.
It's a little bit of both. Ugh!
[rings loudly]
- We want two!
- One more!
[man sings upbeat song in Russian]
[Gabriel] Yeah!
Arak! Don't spill, for the
[Gabriel groans]
[Jssica] Cheers!
[music drowns down speech]
Woo-hoo!
You got a large one?
[music grows louder]
[song continues]
- [shouts]
- [exclaims, laughs]
[drunkenly] Oh! Hey! Look at that, man.
- Arak!
- Arak!
[music continues]
[shutter clicking]
[shutter clicks]
- Let's pour more.
- [shutter clicks]
[Jssica] Ooh!
Hmm
[laughs]
[grunts] Ahh!
- Look here.
- [shutter clicks]
- Stop, please.
- Look, look, look.
[laughs]
[Gabriel hums]
[song fades slowly]
Aah!
- Alalki!
- Ugh, strong right? Hmm
Ugh [chuckles]
[song ends]
- Can I ask you a question?
- Hm?
Were you inside the car
the day of the accident?
No, I was with my pops.
Well so, then
- You do have a dad. [Sighs]
- Everyone has a dad, Gabriel.
Oh, so rude.
The difference is that mine
left me at an orphanage.
He left me there on my own
when I was seven.
And disappeared.
I'm sorry. Truly.
No.
- You must have felt really alone, right?
- No I didn't.
It ended up teaching me
a valuable lesson in this life.
Oh, yeah? What?
Don't trust anyone!
[laughs] How do you live
not trusting anyone? You're saying
No one's worthy of it?
Because people always end up
disappointing you.
Sooner or later.
I'm done with this talk.
I'd rather deal with disappointment.
Look at Stephanie, for example, she
She was horrible to me, but
[sighs] being alone was so much worse.
For real?
Hm. I think so.
I think that being alone
is very, very underrated.
[mischievous guitar music playing]
- Argh! No!
- [Gabriel groans]
- No, no!
- You are my cousin!
Yeah, yeah, I'm you're cousin, baby!
I'm not willing to cause yet another
scandal in our family, we better
No. We should make a pact.
- We'll never hook up, okay?
- A pact?
- Deal!
- Ready?
There's no chance that we'll ever hook up.
[together] No way!
- No way.
- No way, you can leave. Go away.
I don't know you. Skedaddle.
I don't care.
[both laughing]
- Oh, I fell!
- No need to die, alright?
[both laughing]
[music fades]
[groans softly]
- [screams]
- [Gabriel] What? What?! [screams]
[both screaming]
- No, no, no, no, no, no, no!
- In my head, you and I had a deal.
- You broke the deal. What happened?
- I didn't break any deal, you broke it.
Oh, I knew that mixing deals
and Arak wouldn't go well.
- Can you talk a little lower, please?
- [Gabriel and Jssica scream]
I have a huge hangover.
What happened here last night, Ben?
- What really happened last night?
- [Gabriel] What did we do?
Nothing. You got completely drunk,
and, uh, you passed out.
- Oh, thank God
- [sighs relieved]
Thank God, thank God, thank God.
Thank you.
Okay, but How did I end up here?
Look, Ben
I think we need to talk.
Um You know [exhales]
You've got a problem with alcohol,
you know?
- I do?
- No. No, no, no.
- No?
- It's
The two of us,
we convinced you to come here.
Convinced you with arguments.
Not with drugs.
- Arguments.
- [Gabriel] And that's because
Uh, it's very important to us
that you end up finding Hava.
Okay. But why?
Well, I I think that's what Hava wants.
She wants to know if you will remember
about what she wrote to you
in that letter.
You have to remember, Ben.
We really need to find our way to Hava.
[guitar music playing]
We're gonna find my wife! I can feel it!
[instrumental version
of Hava Nagila playing]
[Ramirez] Everybody,
come this way, please!
Follow me, follow the flag. Rosenn Tour.
[Hava Nagila continues]
- [Ramirez] Rosenn Tour.
- Come, Gabriel.
[Ramirez] Want a photo?
We can keep following it this way.
Let's go through here.
- You guys, over here. This way!
- [Gabriel] Look at you.
- [Ramirez] Right? I'm super fast.
- [Gabriel] Yeah.
[Gabriel] Wait a minute.
It's this way, this way, this way.
Hava's really close.
This way.
Here.
That direction.
Hello.
Do you work here? You work here?
- [man speaking Hebrew]
- How much is this? Let me know?
- How much is it?
- [man speaking Hebrew]
Oh Oh, my goodness,
it's not what I was expecting!
Oh, it's a hat!
Oh Ingenious!
Jssica.
Jssica?
- Three shekels?
- [man speaking Hebrew]
- But "cova" what?
- [man speaking Hebrew]
But, but
- Ha shoe? Hameeshoo?
- [man speaking Hebrew]
- What price?
- Jssica! Jssica!
- But what?
- What are you doing?
- What are you doing? I'm negotiating.
- Negotiating? In what language?
- Why do you need that? Jssica, come on.
- In the language of money.
- But Thank you so much.
- We'll buy it on our way back.
Oh, you're using, "We'll get it
on the way back" on me?
- I was just looking around.
- [Gabriel] Thank you! Thank you so much.
- [Jssica] I was just taking a look.
- [Ben speaking Hebrew]
- [man speaking Hebrew]
- Yeah, yeah.
[music continues]
[Jssica gasps softly]
[Gabriel] Almost there.
Look.
It's here.
[music ends]
[woman speaking Hebrew]
- What's she saying?
- My Hebrew's no longer working.
- I only learned it for my Bar Mitzvah.
- Your what?
She's saying that there's no Hava Rosenn
in this hospital.
Tell her to make sure.
Could she check it again?
[Ben speaking Hebrew]
- [huffs]
- Is she checking?
- What's the bar thing you said you did?
- "Bar Mitzvah". It's a religious ritual.
In a bar?
There's no bar, Jssica.
[woman speaking Hebrew]
Well, she's repeating
that there's no Hava here.
No, but her cell phone is in here.
[speaking Hebrew]
- But her cell phone is here!
- Mm-hm.
- A ritual called "Bar" not in a bar?
- It has nothing to do with a bar!
It's a rite of passage for a 13-year-old
boy that makes him a man, got it?
Wow. That's ambitious.
He won't be a man even when he's 30.
[frustrated] Oh my God.
- Wait.
- [speaking Hebrew]
[Gabriel] Hey, wait, Ben.
[intriguing string music playing]
Hava?
[speaking Hebrew angrily]
[speaking Hebrew sternly]
[speaking Hebrew]
Well, I really didn't imagine things
going this way. Did you?
Do not yell at Hava.
This isn't Hava!
Don't you yell at me!
It's Sarah, she's best friends with her.
She's a demon witch!
That doesn't matter.
You can't go around yelling at a woman,
an older woman,
who just had a horrible accident.
She didn't have any kind of accident.
She got plastic surgery.
[speaking Hebrew]
[Ben scoffs]
And liposuction.
Even if you end up
with a perfectly smooth face,
you'll never be beautiful.
[speaking Hebrew]
[laughs]
- Sir, come with us.
- It's witchcraft!
- [speaking Hebrew]
- Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
My dream is to get old and have
a ton of plastic surgery just like you!
- [playful music playing]
- [indistinct chatter]
[Ben] She gave her phone to Sarah!
That's too much.
I don't know why she would do this,
especially now that we're having
our 50th wedding anniversary.
Some numbers are scary.
They make us rethink a lot of things.
Yeah? What number scares you?
Twenty-three.
[Gabriel] I can't see
where she's going anymore.
If she's got another phone,
it's not connected to the cloud.
Cloud? What cloud?
Uh, the cloud
Never mind, Ben.
So where are we going now?
[man singing a solemn chant in Hebrew]
[Ben] This is the famous Wailing Wall.
But it's not necessarily a place
to lament or mourn.
People usually come here
in order to pray and make pleas.
I'm making mine too.
[singing intensifies]
There you go.
In the cloud now.
[singing swells]
I'm so, so sorry.
[woman speaks Hebrew]
[singing continues]
[song continues quietly, then fades]
What about a plan?
I think we really need a plan.
Is that cell phone Hava's?
No, it's my own cell phone.
Last night, when we were drunk, I sent
Audio messages
and ended up calling Stephanie.
Did she message you?
Hey, are you getting jealous, Jssica?
- [scoffs] Come on.
- I'm just joking.
[scoffs]
No, and it's probably for the best.
Ow! [Sighs]
[sucks air] Ow, Rick [groans]
What are you even trying right now?
[inhales and exhales]
- Bring back your hands. Good
- [blows air]
[phone buzzes and beeps]
[puffs] Wait a sec.
[buzzing and beeping]
Ha!
It's Gabriel. [Chuckles]
[Gabriel, drunk, on recording]
Hi, Stephanie! You know who this is?
[chuckles] It's bat shit crazy Gabe.
Have you met bat shit crazy Gabe?
[laughing] I don't think so.
Well, you're about to meet him now.
- [beep]
- [Gabriel] Hi, Stephanie!
You good? Ya know who dis? [Laughs]
It's me, bat shit crazy Gabe!
Guess what? Batshit crazy Gabe is about
to cheat on you with his own cousin!
[laughs]
Oh! Oh, you actually know her as Neide.
- [beep]
- [Gabriel] Hey, Stephanie! Wassup?
[laughs] Know this voice?
D'ya know who you're talking to?
[Stephanie sighs]
- Is it bat shit crazy Gabe?
- [phone thuds loudly]
- [phone buzzes]
- Oh.
- Is it Stephanie?
- No, Hava's phone is pinging.
It's her phone? [Gasps] Ben!
She's purchased something
with her credit card.
Where?
In Eilat.
I told you my request was in the cloud,
didn't I?
[chuckles then sighs relieved]
We're going to Eilat.
[lively folk music playing]
- [Ben] Thank you. See you all later.
- [Jssica] Bye-bye! Bye-bye!
- [Ben] Take care. See you soon.
- [Jssica] Bye-bye!
[Ramirez] Hey, wait a minute.
Wait, wait, wait, guys. Wait, my dears!
Pay attention to Auntie,
real quick, guys. You know
I love a journey of self-discovery and
those sort of things. Ben knows me well.
That movie Eat, Pray, Love,
I watched it a million times.
I slept at the "eat" part
'cause it's boring.
- The "love" part was really depressing.
- [Jssica] Sure. Uh-huh
[Ramirez] It was at a very specific time
in my life Ding-dong!
[music stops]
Are you certain that you wanna go
in there all alone?
What'd be the worst thing
that could happen, Ramrez?
[music resume loudly]
If Hava's really here,
I know exactly where to find her.
[music continues]
[Gabriel] Whoa.
- You know where you're going, right, Ben?
- Of course I do.
Dear followers of our channel,
do you know why the Red Sea
is called the Red Sea?
- Do you know?
- [all giggle]
That was amazing, sisters.
You're naturals.
Oh! You guys, let me take
the picture for you! Goodness' sake.
Okay, here we go. You ready?
Cheese.
It looks really good!
Oh, let me see.
But your face is the same
in all the photos, honey. Come on!
- [man] It's my best angle.
- I'm done. See ya.
- [Gabriel] We're lost. I can't believe it.
- [Ben] No, we're almost there.
[Gabriel] I think we should go back,
the sun is almost setting.
It could get dangerous, Ben.
I'm absolutely sure of what I'm doing.
I took this same path with Hava
Just my point. You said 40 years.
A lot's changed since then.
Yes, a lot has changed,
but King Solomon's mines
are exactly in the same place.
I thought King Solomon's "mines"
was named that way
because he was a narcissist.
[softly] Verify your information, okay?
[playful music playing]
[Ben] Let's keep walking, okay?
Keep going.
- This is it!
- [music ends]
[excitedly] It was here, I'm sure!
- You can trust me, it was here!
- [Gabriel groans] I don't trust you, Ben.
You're confused and clearly
have no idea where you're going.
- [Ben] Look, I didn't ask to come here!
- Ow!
[Ben] I would rather be at home
eating the rest of my lentil soup!
[Gabriel] No, you wouldn't eat it,
because today isn't soup day.
You're gonna have to wait till Wednesday
to eat your lentil soup.
- [Ben] If you wanna leave, leave!
- [Gabriel] You go away!
- [Ben] Just Leave now!
- Why are you yelling at me? Leave!
- Why are you here? Go away then!
- Hey, you two! Knock it off.
Stop right this minute!
Gabriel, you're way too old for this.
And, Ben, you are not
senile enough for this kind of thing.
I want you to hug him. And you, him.
Hug it out.
[chuckles]
[sighs]
- [Gabriel] Jssica.
- Uh-huh?
- [softly] No sudden movements.
- What is it? Oh my God!
[Gabriel] Stop it. Stop! No!
- Get it off! Get it off! Get it off!
- I said not to move, Jssica!
- I said, don't move, stop! Stop!
- Get it, get it, get it off!
- I got it. It's gone!
- [Jssica screams] Oh, no!
[Jssica] Wait, it's a hairpin.
It's a hairpin. Oh, here it is. Bobby pin.
[paper rustling]
[intriguing music playing]
[sighs deeply]
[Ben inhales]
[Jssica] "Ben, Hava, and Deborah."
[music turns poignant]
[younger Hava] Deborah, come here, love.
Sign your name.
[younger Ben] Ahh. This place
really is incredible.
[young Deborah] Here, Ma.
- Ahh.
- [all chuckle]
- Good.
- [younger Hava] See these bottles?
People come here
to put their names in them.
That way they can come back.
[younger Ben] There, now we put it
all the way inside.
[chuckles] See?
[younger Hava chuckles]
[Ben inhales deeply]
[music fades]
[crying] I really thought
she would be here.
[sniffles]
[poignant guitar music playing]
- [engine sputters]
- [blows]
[Ben] Oh, no
[engine sputtering]
- [Ben groans]
- Wait, wait, no way.
Oh, no, is the battery dead?
Please, I beg you,
tell me the battery didn't die.
Okay. No, the battery did not die.
- How about phone reception. Huh?
- [Gabriel groans]
No.
- No bars.
- No!
[Gabriel groans]
No need to be worried.
I know Ramirez.
He'll realize we're unaccounted for.
What a wonderful day!
Hey, you know when we get
to that perfect point in our life,
when you feel like you have
absolutely nothing missing in it?
Feels that way for me.
- [inhales] Nothing unaccounted for.
- [man chuckles]
Come closer to the fire.
It's going to get colder closer to dawn.
Tomorrow morning
we'll be able to find help and leave.
Come on, sit over here.
[Gabriel sighs] I'll leave this over here.
[grunts, then sighs]
Mmm
[exhales] I seriously hope we aren't
taken by Bedouins during the night.
- [Ben and Gabriel chuckle]
- [Jssica scoffs]
I don't wanna be sold to a sheikh
as a sexual slave, alright?
- But you don't run that risk, don't worry.
- I don't? How do you know that?
- You're not fit for a sheikh.
- Wha? [Chuckles]
- [Jssica and Ben chuckle]
- How do you know what he's into?
You know the guy?
Do you know what he likes?
You don't. Jeez.
- [Jssica groans]
- What's that?
- Arak.
- [upbeat guitar music playing]
Wait, you're drinking Arak?
- It's a liquid. Liquids hydrate.
- [chuckles] Oh, yeah?
Where do you get that liquid?
I'm an adventurer,
and I carry basic items for survival.
- Oh, yeah. Really?
- Like this water bottle from Rosenn Tour.
- [Jssica and Gabriel chuckle]
- [Ben] Listen up!
You're in the middle of a desert.
I do not recommend that you drink alcohol.
Without us. [Chuckles]
- [Gabriel] Oh!
- [Jssica] Mm!
[all laugh]
There you go! [Chuckles]
[Gabriel, chanting] Ben! Ben!
Ben! Ben! [Laughs]
- [Ben, laughing] It's all gone!
- [Jssica] He's on a Ben-der.
[all chuckle drunkenly]
[Gabriel sighs] Ben there, done that.
[Ben] I've done so many things Ha!
I really have.
Too old for that now.
What are you saying? You You're not!
I wanna live through all
that you've lived. All of it!
Well, I hope you don't experience
all of them.
There are certain things
that end up happening in our lives
That change us forever.
[Jssica] Mm-hm.
And we're never able
to be ourselves again.
Yeah.
Kind of like when we lose somebody.
Someone we truly loved.
Hm.
Yeah, I'm no longer the man
who Hava used to know.
You think that's the reason
that she decided to leave?
Nah.
I was the one who left before her.
In spirit.
[unsettling music playing]
I'm about to tell you something
I I I've been meaning
to tell you something.
[sighs]
[whispers] Should I?
[snores]
- [whispering] Right now?
- Say it now.
Ben [gasps]
It's gonna really suck
if he decides to die right now!
[stifles laughter]
- Ben!
- Hm? What's going on?
[laughs drunkenly]
You know why Hava chose to have
no contact with her family in Brazil?
[groans] They never really deserved Hava.
Yeah, and?
And?
- Ben!
- [groans annoyed]
[snorts laughter]
Why was that? Why didn't they?
Who cares? I think it's because
she left her fianc to run away with me.
She She was an adventurer,
she always was.
How can I know, huh?
Maybe because she's adopted?
Oh, I don't know.
[intriguing sting]
[music ends]
So, technically speaking,
I'm not your cousin.
[music re-starts energetic]
[breathing heavily]
[panting]
Hey, hey, hey. We shouldn't be naked
in the middle of
Let's do it with our clothes on.
Put your clothes on.
[Gabriel] Let's do it with them on.
[kisses]
[moaning softly]
[loud grunting]
[shouting]
[Gabriel, terrified] For God's sake!
Jssica.
I'm gonna be sold to a sheikh!
There gonna sell me, I told you.
- I knew it, I knew it.
- [shushes]
[man] Do you need a ride?
[upbeat folk music playing]
I'm gonna kill Ramirez.
Nothing makes me stop thinking
that they're gonna take us
straight to an auction.
- What type of auction?
- The one where they sell us!
We're gonna be sold soon.
[Jssica] Stop this, we're not going
to be auctioned!
- [Gabriel grunts]
- [Jssica] Stop! So annoying
[Gabriel groans] It's hurting [strains]
[groaning]
I think I need to get off.
[grunts in pain]
Oh, aah!
- I I want to get off. I'd rather get off.
- What?
Yeah, I I would rather walk, Jssica.
- Gabriel, no.
- Hi, friend, friend, hi.
Hi! I wanna go!
- No, no, no, no! Do not let him go down!
- I wanna go down now!
- You won't go!
- [Gabriel] I wanna go!
- He does not!
- [Gabriel] Now!
- [Jssica] No, no, no, no. You don't!
- [Gabriel] I do. I wanna go right now!
[music continues]
[Gabriel] Hey!
We're here!
- Rosenn Tour.
- [Jssica] Hey!
[Gabriel and Jssica whoop and laugh]
- [Jssica] Let's go! Wait there.
- [Gabriel] My goodness
[Jssica] Go around it.
God, I'm fucked. Hello!
- Are you?
- Bup!
We'll talk about this later, Ramirez.
Yeah, we'll talk about it later then.
Just get up there,
for goodness's sake, let's go, guys.
Oh, you smell good! Yeah
Come on. Oh, God
Let's get going.
[stern guitar music playing]
[resolute music playing]
Ding Oh
[flatly] Dong. [Clears throat] Whoo!
Next stop on tour [swallows loudly]
the Dead Sea.
- Yay!
- [Ramirez] I'm like that sea today: Dead.
Let's get into some trivia, for those
of you who like trivia. And I know you do!
The Red Sea is not really a sea,
it's actually a lake,
and it's at the lowest point on the Earth,
and it's extremely salty, just like me.
[tourists laughing]
[Ramirez] It's quite a shame
if you stop to think about it
[music drowns down speech]
- [man 1] Woo-hoo!
- [man 2 laughs]
[indistinct chatter]
[Ben] I wanna go home.
[Jssica] I totally get it.
I'm not talking about my house in Yafo.
That house for me, without Hava,
makes no sense now.
My place is with Hava.
And I know that we'll find her.
We'll definitely find her, yeah?
We will for sure.
[sighs deeply]
What?
Let's go float.
Let's go float.
- Wanna go float?
- Let's do it.
[Jssica and Ben laugh]
[music turns lively]
Hey, careful not to get salt in your eye.
This is nuts.
[music fades]
[knocking on door]
Oh! [Chuckles]
- Hi.
- Come in!
Come in, 'cause I wanna talk.
What I wanted to say is,
that the moment we met, you
We should only be friends from now on.
[curious sting]
Or cousins.
We should just be cousins from now on.
Yeah.
'Course!
Well, I was
Thinking about that thing
you said to me before.
[Jssica] Hm?
I don't wanna be afraid
to be alone, you know?
[Jssica] Mm-hm.
And I came to the conclusion
being alone's underrated.
Yeah, people always end up
disappointing us. One way or another.
[zip rasps]
[music turns intriguing]
- Oh, hello there.
- [Stephanie] Good afternoon.
Is there something I can help you with?
I believe so.
I need to know all you know about Jssica.
Your employee.
That makes two,
'cause I also wanna know about her.
[music ends]
[Jssica] You think he might've died?
Wow. You've already killed the guy
28 times.
Well, stress kills, right?
He's stressed.
- You think he left?
- Hm.
- Jssica and Gabriel?
- Yep.
[speaks Hebrew]
"Havasha" Is what?
- No idea.
- Hm. Mm-hm.
What do I do?
Open it!
[Jssica] Hm.
What?
Gone or is he dead?
[upbeat pop music playing]
What's happening here?
I'm assuming it's a Bat Mitzvah.
- A what?
- It's like a Bar Mitzvah but for girls.
Ah, but there is a bar, for real! Huh?
Oh, Ben's over there.
I'm traveling across the country
with some kids.
It's kinda like a family trip,
but we're not related.
- It's fun!
- Oh, hi!
- [Ben] Oh!
- We made it.
My friends, the rabbi.
- You speak English?
- Yes, yes.
Oh!
[upbeat song in Hebrew playing]
What are you doing here, Ben?
Do you know this girl's family?
No, but I know Rabbi Jaime.
Happy birthday to you!
Look over here, Jssica!
[Jssica] Take a picture!
Take a bunch of pictures!
[laughs]
[song continues]
Is Jssica not Jewish?
Look, Ben. It's a long story.
She just found out recently
that she was Jewish.
She never had a Bat Mitzvah.
Oh, no? Huh
Well, I guess today is her lucky day.
[song ends]
[rabbi Jaime] You know, Jssica
Comes from Hebrew.
And it means, "The grace of God."
Jssica also comes
from the root word "Jesse"
which means "wealth" as well.
- I want some.
- [Gabriel chuckles]
The Bat Mitzvah for my daughter
was held here.
[shushes]
[rabbi Jaime] Jssica,
each one of these twelve candles
represents one year in your life.
We're short a few.
[laughing]
And you can choose
to give each one of these candles
to a person
that's important to you in your life.
It could be to a friend of yours
or a relative Hmm?
[poignant music playing]
I don't really have anyone in my life, so
[music builds]
I lost my mom early on,
when I was just a girl.
I believe the person who's most important
in my life would be myself,
mostly because I had no one to count on.
- Wow, what a bummer, huh? [Chuckles]
- [rabbi Jaime] No, no, not at all.
[Jssica] But anyway [sighs]
I also don't want
To have to light
the dozen candles on my own.
So I want to dedicate this moment
to two people who
- Who have won my heart over
- Mm-hm.
out of nowhere.
- Which are Ben and Gabriel.
- [rabbi Jaime] Aww [chuckles]
- Are they allowed up here?
- Yes, yes of course.
So, come on up! [Chuckles]
[Jssica laughs]
[music swells]
- You embarrassed?
- [Gabriel] Hm-hm.
I am too. [Giggles]
- Can I light them?
- Yes, you can.
This one now.
- Do you make a wish?
- You can make a wish, sure.
[giggles, then blows]
- [blowing]
- [guests clapping]
- [Jssica] Yay! [Laughs]
- [rabbi Jaime] Congratulations!
[soft pop song in Hebrew playing]
[Ben] Oh.
[clapping ends]
[rabbi Jaime chuckles]
Wait, what's going on?
You told me the two of you were cousins.
It's not an issue,
her grandma was adopted.
- [rabbi Jaime] Oh! [Chuckles]
- Hm-hm.
[ominous sting]
- [cork pops]
- Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
- [Jssica] Hm!
- [Gabriel laughs]
Tell me, Miss Jssica.
- About what?
- How exactly are you feeling
about finally becoming a woman today?
- [laughs]
- [Jssica] Hm.
[liquid pouring]
I find it quite comical.
[Gabriel] So it's comical?
- [Jssica] Whoops, I already took a sip.
- [Gabriel] Oh! [Chuckles]
[Jssica] I used to think
That I was doing great on my own.
And now I think
That I wouldn't be able
to go back to that
That life I had before.
I don't wanna be alone any longer.
I don't believe any of this
happened by chance.
[soft music playing]
The two lockets
Our family and it's crazy,
outlandish stories
This trip of ours.
It all means something.
[guitar music builds]
Didn't you wanna stay single?
[music turns energetic]
[Gabriel moaning softly]
[Jssica moaning softly]
- [Jssica] Wait a sec.
- [music distorts and slows]
- No!
- No longer working?
- [Jssica] Uh-huh.
- [Gabriel sighs]
- Oh, no, no, no, no.
- [Jessica sighs]
- What's your name?
- My name is Jssica.
Five-oh-seven.
Yes. Y Yes.
[music resumes]
- Here you go.
- Thanks.
Thank you.
[Gabriel moaning softly]
- [both moaning softly]
- [door closes]
[music speeds up]
[Gabriel and Jssica gasp]
[Jssica gasps]
What's this?
[Jssica panting softly]
[soft music playing]
Uh I can explain it.
Who are you two?
Uh We're Hava's family, Ben.
Hava doesn't have family.
She does.
She cut off ties with every one of them!
But you guys had a daughter.
Deborah.
And Deborah is no longer here.
And what about Deborah's daughter?
Your granddaughter?
What are you even talking about?
I never had a granddaughter.
Oh, yeah?
Just like with Hava's family,
that you say doesn't exist?
Did you also decide to cut ties
with your granddaughter?
Granddaughter?
What is it that the two of you want?
Our money?
Twenty-three.
Oh.
"Twenty-three" what?
The number that scares me.
It's how old my mom was when she died.
[music ends]
I'm old enough to make my own decisions!
You're old enough, but you lack maturity!
You don't know what you're about to do!
[young Deborah] Dad, I want
to live in Brazil.
I wanna move there, I wanna go
to college in Brazil. I want that now!
Didn't the two of you move here
when you wanted to?
No, because our circumstances
were completely different!
- Not one person supported us! Ever!
- Then just don't support me, Dad!
And I'm not going to support you
going to another country all on your own!
But, Dad, I won't be on my own.
Aunt Raquel said I could stay with her.
Deborah!
You've been talking to Raquel?
I have, Mom.
This whole thing happened 20 years ago!
Just forgive her already!
[younger Hava] Deborah,
I am never going to forgive, Deborah.
No way.
[younger Ben] Deborah,
if you leave us
and go to stay with that family,
you don't need to talk to us ever again,
you'll be dead to us.
Uh-huh.
[poignant music continues]
[music fades]
[sniffles]
I am Deborah's daughter.
Huh.
I took a look at your passport.
You last name's not ours.
My last name's from my dad.
I'm your granddaughter.
[soft music playing]
- [Gabriel] Hey, Ben
- [door closes]
I said I was her and
[sobs softly]
[crying] It shouldn't have been like this.
I'm starting to think
this whole thing was just a waste.
I traveled 10,000 kilometers
to get rejected?
- People always disappoint me.
- [Gabriel] Jssica, calm down. Listen.
- They always disappoint me.
- Listen to me. Please, calm down.
- I need you to calm down.
- [panting]
Well, you traveled 10,000 kilometers
to find a person,
but that person was never Ben.
[breath shudders]
You and I came all this way
to find the owner of the third locket.
And that's what we're gonna do.
How, though?
This is the itinerary of the tour.
And these are the places
that we've been to.
Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Eilat, and Judea.
What do these all have in common?
At all of them, we did dumb shit?
That's true.
But remember the stories
Ben told us about his past?
Each one of them
was in one of these places.
Yeah, he found out he'd be a dad
in Tel Aviv.
Your mom was born in a hospital
in Jerusalem.
- Uh-huh.
- Right?
The tiny bottle at King Solomon's mines
with all their names.
That's true. The Bat Mitzvah
for your mom was here where we are.
In other words,
all of these places
have significance in their story.
It's exactly what Hava was saying
in her letter.
[intriguing music playing]
[Hava] I really need you
to be able to remember again.
And when you do remember, come to me.
You will know where I am.
He needs to remember.
The tour goes
through every one of these places.
You see, Hava's always been ahead of us.
So we need to get ahead and arrive
before her at the final destination.
- That's what we've gotta do.
- That's it.
That's it. That's it! Then let's go.
Have I told you
that my driver's license is Category D?
- What's category D?
- Come on.
- What? Hold on!
- Let's go!
[intriguing music continues]
[alarm chirps]
[door hisses open]
[bus engine starts]
[music continues]
[door hisses open]
C'mon, Gabriel! Come on!
[both panting]
[music slows down]
[Jssica] Thanks. C'mon, Gabriel.
It's that way. It's that way.
Is it that way?
Yeah, I think so. Go.
[panting]
[Jssica groans]
[panting]
[Jssica groans]
[music picks up pace slowly]
[Gabriel] Find her?
[Jssica panting]
[out of breath] I think this plan of yours
was really bad.
[dramatic sting]
[Jssica puffs]
Jssica.
[hopeful music playing]
I think that's her. [Pants softly]
Look, I think that's her.
[Jssica gasps softly]
It's her. It's Hava.
[Gabriel] Run! Run!
[panting]
[Jssica] Hava! [Echoing]
[younger Ben] For God's sake! Don't jump!
It wasn't your fault, my love!
Our Deborah chose her own path.
This was not your fault!
Our daughter's death
is not our fault, Hava!
[they sob loudly]
Oh, Ben.
[Jssica] Hava!
[younger Hava sobs] Oh, Ben!
[younger Hava sobbing]
[Jssica] Hava!
[Jssica panting]
[pants]
I
I'm your granddaughter.
[panting]
[poignant music playing]
My mom always told me
That this locket was only worn
By the women of courage in our family.
[music builds]
[music brightens]
She
She never told me about you,
about having a daughter.
[crying] I didn't know about you either.
I'd never known.
[music builds]
[chuckles softly]
[Hava] Look at you
[Hava exclaims]
- [Jssica crying softly]
- [Hava kisses]
[Hava kisses]
[Jssica chuckles]
[Jssica laughs delighted]
My grandma!
[camera shutter clicks]
It's her!
[Hava laughs]
[both laugh and cry]
[music swells]
[music fades]
[door hisses open]
- Be careful.
- [all chuckling]
[officer] Jssica Arajo?
- [Hava] What What's going on?
- You're under arrest.
- What are you doing?
- Hands.
We have a warrant.
You have a warrant for her?
But what warrant?
- What's happening?
- You have to come with us to Brazil.
What's going on?
- Come with us.
- I was gonna return it
- Return what?
- I I pawned something.
A jewel, just so we could take this trip.
I was gonna figure out
a way to give it back.
I didn't steal it.
[softly] Forgive me.
[Gabriel exhales]
[officer] Get in, please.
POLICE
[engine starts]
[intriguing music playing]
[motorcycle approaching]
[Ben] She stole a jewel.
She's a con-artist, Hava!
Con-artist, Ben?
She only pawned a jewel
to come here and find us in Israel.
Ben!
You are a grandad!
She is, first and foremost, our grandkid.
[clicks tongue] Nah
If Deborah had actually had a kid,
she would've told us.
[scoffs] Oh, yeah?
You really think she would?
[sarcastically] Because our relationship
was so good, huh? So open.
Ben!
When you take a look at Jessica,
you can see her eyes
are just like Deborah's!
And she has that adventurer's streak
that she got from you.
[Ben groans]
You're seeing what you wanna see.
Not the reality.
No, no.
I am seeing reality.
It's right in front of my eyes.
Ben, come on.
I don't recognize you at all!
[poignant music playing]
I don't recognize myself either. [Scoffs]
[exhales]
[music fades]
DIVORCE NOTICE
Gabriel!
There you go.
- Divorce is off the table. You win.
- I don't get it. What do you mean, I win?
Isn't that what you wanted so desperately?
To stay with me?
[scoffs]
Hey, Stephanie, let me tell you something.
Since you let me go,
I've been on a journey
though the Middle East.
I kidnapped an old dude.
- [sighs]
- [Gabriel] I rode a camel in the desert.
I was almost sold to a sheikh.
- [chuckles]
- [Gabriel] I stole a bus.
All that in just days.
- It's true, my life without you is chaos.
- [chuckles]
But I never wanted
to desperately be with you, Stephanie.
All I wanted
so desperately was to not be alone.
[exhales]
[soft music playing]
[sighs]
[music fades]
[exhales]
[resolute music playing]
[man over radio] The flight
to Tel Aviv is ready.
[car horn honking insistently in distance]
[Ramirez and tourists] Jessica! Jessica!
[tourists shouting]
[Jssica gasps]
Check-out, please, 66.
Until the next stay with us, sir.
Have a safety journey.
[speaks Hebrew]
Ah! Uh, sir,
there's a envelope they left for you.
[hopeful music playing]
DEBORAH, JSSICA, AND RAQUEL - 1998
[Hava, shouting] Hold on! Wait!
[Gabriel] Jssica!
Wait! Please! Stop, please! Stop!
Jssica!
[Hava] Wait, please!
Wait!
- Hold on!
- [Gabriel] Jssica!
[Hava] Wait, for goodness's sake!
I will cover the cost of the jewels!
We're gonna talk to the Brazilian Embassy.
What are they saying?
I'm terrible at figuring these things out.
We have a warrant. There's nothing
that you could possibly do.
[puffs] They're talking
about the size of something? I don't know.
She's coming with us.
[Hava panting]
[music swells]
[Hava] My love.
[voice breaking] You are no longer alone.
I will be
on the very first flight to Brazil,
and I will meet you in Rio de Janeiro.
[Jssica gasps]
It will all be okay.
[officer] Let's go. The plane
to Rio de Janeiro is waiting in Tel Aviv.
[door closes]
[plane engine starts]
[woman over radio] Four X-ray,
this is tower control.
You're cleared to taxi
to runway one. Over.
[pilot, over radio] Roger that, tower
control. Taxiing to airway one. Over.
[resolute music playing]
Huh? Wait, a motorcycle?
Oh! It's Ben!
My boss, you guys! That's him out there!
[rock and roll music playing]
Whoa! Ben?
[Hava laughs incredulously]
[indistinct radio chatter]
That's my granddaughter in there!
And this plane's only leaving
over my dead body!
Mine too. Let's go, Ben!
That's it! That is my Ben!
[tower control] You're cleared
for takeoff on runway one.
- I kinda hope they crush him.
- [laughs] Yeah, man.
Oh, yeah! [Laughs]
[tower control] Contact us
when you're leaving the airspace.
[Gabriel] Hey, Ben?
Just so I understand what's going on
There is a plan B, yeah?
Or is Plan B actual death on the runway?
I've already paid for the jewels.
Now all we need
is to buy a little more time
until we get the ha be as corpus.
Mm
That's way too much trust
in the Brazil justice system, dude!
[pilot] Cleared for takeoff on runway one.
Will climb and maintain 3,000 feet.
[engine revs]
[sucks air]
[music continues]
[softly] I'm gonna die!
[woman, over radio]
Halt takeoff immediately.
We've just received orders from
the government to halt departure. Over.
[Jssica] They told us to stop?
[pilot] Air control, aborting take off.
Slowing down and exiting the runway.
Over.
[laughing]
Ha! It worked out! It worked out!
- [tourists laughing]
- Oh, my God! Thank God! Thank
Mwah! Oh, what a blessed kiss!
Oh, thank you, Lord!
[Ben and Gabriel laughing]
[Jssica panting]
[breathing heavily]
[laughing]
[crying and laughing]
[both laughing]
[Hava laughing]
My granddaughter.
[Jssica] Uh-huh.
The cloud heeded my pleas.
The what?
But what cloud?
[softly] It's a long story.
[chuckles]
[soft music playing]
[Ben] "Remind me
what it's like to be happy."
REMIND ME WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE HAPPY
You reminded me, Jssica.
I am so thankful. [Chuckles lightly]
You're very welcome.
Grandpa.
[delighted] Ah!
- And Grandma.
- [laughs]
[they laugh]
Mwah.
[Jssica laughs and cries]
[upbeat pop music playing]
[kisses]
[man singing in Hebrew]
[Gabriel laughing]
Aw, a wonderful group hug!
Yes! That's so great. Guys! Let's go home.
Yes!
So good! So good. So! Oh, Sisters,
come here! You're my favorites!
I love you, little cousin.
- [disgusted] No.
- No, what?
No, don't say, "I love you" and ruin
the moment. [Shushes] Just kiss me.
[Gabriel chuckles]
[music fades]
We're all here together,
in this place I consider
quite sacred,
to celebrate the union of two people.
Who, despite all obstacles,
decided to come together
as one.
Now,
what is it that makes two people
decide to stay together
for such a long time, forever?
I really don't know,
it's some sort of mystery.
Sometimes, it's the exact thing
these two people found in common.
[tender music playing]
Or, sometimes, it's the thing they found
in which they're complete opposites.
Sometimes, two people
decide to stay together
simply because
God made them that way, period.
[chuckles]
And there are those who choose
to unite with God.
Hava,
my dear Ben
May you never forget
to keep the promises that you're making
here and now to each other.
And may your lives
be an eternal adventure. [Chuckles]
[Hava, narrating] We often tend
to label our mistakes as "experiences,"
but it's those very mistakes
that make our lives
so precious and unique.
Though they can cause us deep suffering,
their lessons make us stronger,
propelling our lives forward.
- [glass cracks]
- [guests] Mazel Tov!
And cheers to life!
[guests] Cheers to life!
- [clapping]
- [woman vocalizing]
[Hava Nagila playing]
[woman singing in Hebrew]
[laughs]
[all singing Hava Nagila in Hebrew]
[Gabriel] Whoo!
[Ramirez] Hey, hey, hey, hey!
[laughter]
[music fades]
[Ramirez] Cheers to life!
[woman continues singing Hava Nagila]
CHEERS TO LIFE
[music fades]
[pop music playing]
[sings "Antes de Tudo"
by Liniker in Portuguese]
[music drowns down dialog]
[song ends]
[lively folk music playing]
[music ends]
[upbeat funk music playing]
[music ends]
[percussive rock and roll music playing]
[music ends]
