Cocoon: One Summer of Girlhood (2025) Movie Script
1
[wind gently blowing]
[exhales]
[chuckles]
[San grunts]
[gasps]
[wind rushes]
[grunts]
[gasps]
[gasping and grunting]
[inhales and exhales sharply]
-[Mayu] San.
-[San gasping]
I knew I'd find you here.
Mayu.
What's in your hand?
Huh? Uh, it's, uh, nothing!
Yeah? Seems suspicious.
[Mayu] What is it?
What is it?
[Mayu] It's so peaceful here.
[San chuckles]
[San] This island
is always so beautiful and warm.
I imagine it's what
Heaven would be like.
[birds chirping]
[Mayu] Hey, San.
Have you ever seen snow before?
No, why?
When you exhale
on a cold winter day,
your breath looks like a long,
white cloud.
It almost looks like
silkworms spinning silk.
Silkworms?
[Mayu] When it snows
the whole world gets so quiet.
You can hear your voice
resonating around you.
It's like you're completely
wrapped up inside a cocoon.
[San] Wrapped in a cocoon?
Maybe we could
see it together one day.
[gasps]
Mm, yeah!
[Mayu] Okay,
we'd better head back now.
[melancholy piano music]
-[Mayu grunts]
-[indistinct chatter, laughter]
[San gasps]
Looks like it's almost time
for our shift to start.
I guess we lost track of time.
-Come on.
-[San grunts]
[indistinct chatter]
[all grunting]
[all] Keep going! Keep going!
[all grunting]
[horse brays]
[girls giggling]
[indistinct chatter]
[bell ringing]
I think we're gonna
make it back in time!
[Mayu shouts]
We still have to get changed!
[both whimpering and gasping]
[melancholy piano music]
Well done, girls.
You were able to complete
all the morning duties.
As I explained to you all
before, we're moving tomorrow.
A new military hospital
will be opening soon.
[Mayu gasps]
[Teacher] I still need to go
finish making the preparations
with them for that.
-[both giggle]
-We made it.
Barely.
-Mari and Yuri are looking.
-[San] Hmm?
Unit two will
instead resume classes,
but the rest of
our regular classes
will be canceled this afternoon.
[girls snickering]
[Teacher]
I'll be on site at the hosp--
something the matter, girls?
This is very important.
The war's about to enter
a very critical phase.
Now more than ever,
you must all try to conduct
yourselves responsibly.
And moving forward, I will
not allow any more tardiness.
[all laughing]
[Teacher] That's all for now.
Everyone, you know where to go.
Dismissed.
[all] Yes, ma'am.
[San grumbles]
If it hadn't been for you two,
we wouldn't have gotten
in trouble with the teacher!
[Yuri] We were only
paying attention to the teacher
like we were supposed to.
-Right, Mari?
-Yeah!
And besides,
it was your own fault
for being late
in the first place.
-Sure was.
-Okay, fine.
That may be true, but still.
[all shouting]
-[thuds]
-[both gasping]
-Are you okay?
-[Mayu] Are you hurt?
-[Yuri groans]
-[Mayu exhales sharply]
Geez. I tried to tell you
we shouldn't carry so much.
Liar! I'm not the one who said
to carry it all at once!
-You were!
-Why are you blaming me?
You're the one who fell down
all on your own!
What? You were the one
who pushed me over!
You were in such a big hurry
to get ready for the party
that you weren't
paying attention and--
[Mari shushes]
A party?
That was supposed
to be a secret, remember?
Well, it was all your fault
for picking a fight!
Uh, San, how 'bout
you go see Hina?
I'll stay here and
help these two out.
Heh, yeah, okay.
-[girls grumbling]
-[Mayu chuckles nervously]
[birds chirping]
[Hina] Hmm.
-[Tamaki groans]
-[Hina] Huh?
It's so hot.
[Hina] Hi, Tamaki.
I'm gross and sweaty.
[Hina chuckles]
Well, it is summer.
I really hate
getting all sunburnt.
Is that the reason you've been
skipping out on work today?
[chuckles]
You noticed?
It was obvious.
And how are you feeling?
Better than usual today.
-[San] Hina!
-[both gasp]
I brought some water for you!
[breathing heavily]
-Here.
-Thank you, San.
Hey, where's mine?
You can go get it for yourself,
Tamaki.
-What?
-I'll share my water with you.
Wow!
That's a really great drawing.
It's a silkworm, right?
[Hina] Yeah. I've been reviewing
last week's lesson.
Hmm? Wait. What?
-"COCOONING IS WHEN THE SILK..."
-[Hina] Oh, right here?
-"COCOONING IS WHEN THE SILK..."
-[Hina] This says "cocooning."
You two will learn more
about it next year.
I'm not really
a fan of bugs, you know.
Is it true silkworms
are boiled to make silk?
[Hina] Yeah, that's right.
But if you do that, doesn't
that mean they'd all die?
[Hina chuckles]
I think maybe I should explain
it from the beginning, then.
Oh.
[Hina] Silkworms only have
a lifespan of about two months.
-[San] Hmm.
-[Hina] Right after hatching
from their eggs, the larvae
feed on mulberry leaves
-and grow rather quickly.
-[Tamaki] Mm!
[Hina] They keep molting
as they grow larger in size.
Then the larvae spins a silk
string for two or three days
to make a cocoon
around themselves.
-[Tamaki] Oh, okay.
-[Hina] And inside,
that is where
they become pupas.
And then we boil the pupas
in their cocoons
so we can harvest the silk.
All the pupas.
-However...
-Huh?
A portion of the pupas
are kept alive
so they can lay eggs
for the next cycle.
You see? So it's not like
all the silkworms die.
[Tamaki] Wow, Hina.
You'd make
a really great teacher.
[Hina laughs] Wanna try
and draw one, Tamaki?
[Tamaki] No! I told you,
I really hate bugs!
[Tamaki] No, thanks!
[Hina]
But they're cute close up. See?
[gentle curious music]
[Tamaki] San.
San!
Hey!
Were you listening
to her just now?
She said the moths can't fly.
What?
Bet you didn't even know that,
did you?
[all laughing]
[birds chirping]
[Yuri] Hina,
are you not gonna finish that?
[Mari] Lunchtime is almost over.
Seeing that I didn't do
very much work today,
why don't you
have the rest, Yuri?
Really? All right, then.
You better eat fast.
[Hina chuckles nervously]
Hey, anyone know
what San's doing?
Huh.
[Tamaki]
I think she said something
about finding rare flowers.
[Mari exhales sharply]
[exhales and giggles]
-[bell ringing]
-[gasps]
Ah, I'm not ready
to go to work yet!
You're not gonna skip like
you did this morning, right?
-[San chuckles]
-Let's go, San!
Our lunch break is over!
We still gotta finish
chopping up those trees!
[gasps] Okay!
Uh...
[exhales]
[gasps]
[grunting]
[gasps]
-[Mari] San!
-[gasps]
We're going to be late!
-We're gonna leave without you!
-Wait, hold on.
[Mari] We'll be in big trouble
with the teacher
if we don't get
it all finished today!
[Yuri] Come on! We gotta go!
Hey! Something wrong?
Mm, no.
We should probably try
to catch up with the others.
-San?
-[grunts]
Well, I don't see it there
anymore but
for a second I thought I saw,
-like, a flash in the sky.
-[gasps]
San, that could be...
I'll go tell the lookout!
Wait! 'Cause what if
I made a mistake?
[Mayu breathing heavily]
Don't worry.
I'll tell her that
I was the one who saw it.
Okay?
[San gasping]
-[all] Huh?
-[San gasps]
[both breathing heavily]
[Mayu grunting]
[San grunts]
[grunting]
Hey, Shiho!
Can you hear me?
What's up?
Somethin' wrong?
We had a sighting upwind!
Can you see anything?
Hold on! Let me check!
[grunting]
[Shiho grunting]
Hmm.
[gasping]
This is bad.
[gasping]
[Shiho] Mayu! San!
We have an emergency!
[both gasp]
[horn music blaring]
[all gasping]
[grunting]
There's an air raid coming
from the direction of the cape!
Everyone, camouflage the area
and hide yourselves
as fast as you can!
How much time?
One minute!
[tense music]
[all screaming]
[animal footsteps galloping]
[plane engines roaring]
[all shouting at once]
[Mayu and San breathing heavily]
Come on.
We need to go help them.
Hina, let's get
you somewhere safe.
-Ah, no! I wanna help, too!
-Wait!
[all grunting]
[all shouting at once]
[horse whinnying]
[girls shouting]
[horse hooves clopping]
[both grunting]
[all shouting]
[all grunting]
[grunting]
[music fades]
All right, Tamaki,
I think that's good enough.
[Tamaki grunting]
-San, let's go.
-[San] Okay.
[all speaking quietly]
[both grunt]
[whimpering]
[gasps]
[both gasp]
[Mayu grunts]
Tamaki!
[Tamaki] Hm? What is it?
[San gasps]
[student in pink] Mayu! Tamaki!
What are you doing?
-[Tamaki] You okay?
-I'm sorry!
[Mayu] Here. Let us help.
[student in yellow]
Hurry, please!
[student in dark orange]
You can do it!
[student in white] Get up, Kaho!
[both grunting]
[all shouting]
[plane engines roaring]
[girls whimpering]
[girls gasping]
[all breathing nervously]
[all giggling]
[all laughing and cheering]
[girls shouting]
That wasn't as bad as I thought.
[student in pink] Yeah,
it was a piece of cake.
[girls giggling]
[San grunts]
-[distant birds chirping]
-[gentle music]
[Mari] All right, now that
we have a spare moment,
it's finally time
for our surprise birthday party
for Mayu!
Right! And to celebrate
her six-month anniversary
of living on the island!
Yeah!
[all laughing and clapping]
And now our guest of honor,
the one and only...
Mayu, our good friend.
[Tamaki] Whoo! Yeah!
[all laughing]
Wow. Time really flew by.
Give a speech, Mayu!
Come on!
Huh? Well, uh, sure.
Thanks, everyone.
This party is really sweet.
I've only been here
for six months
but it feels like I've been here
so much longer.
[Mayu exhales]
I'm grateful for all of you.
Thank you for everything.
-[both gasping]
-[laughing and clapping]
But you're mostly
talking about me, right?
Ah, ow!
-Okay, point taken.
-You just had to ruin it.
[Hina] This is for you.
-Huh?
-[giggles]
What is it?
I thought
I'd give you mine first.
Since it's a special occasion,
we wanted to bring you
some presents.
That book's a collection
of my favorite poems.
I hope you haven't
read this one yet.
-[giggles]
-[gasps]
Thanks, Hina.
This is so thoughtful.
Okay, it's my turn. Here.
[snickers]
-A boxwood comb.
-That's cool.
It looks pretty fancy.
[Tamaki] Oh, there's this new
hairstyle I wanna try on you.
Hey.
[Hina] Tamaki always has such
good taste.
[Mari and Yuri]
It's our turn next! Our turn!
[San giggles]
Yuri and I have...
This one gift
from the both of us.
[Yuri] Ta-dah!
[Mari] It's a pressed flower
bookmark.
-[San exhales sharply]
-[Tamaki] Ooh!
-Wow, you made this?
-[Hina] That's really pretty.
[both giggling]
It's so big. This must've
taken you guys forever.
[Mari and Yuri]
We made it together!
[Tamaki] And they probably
-argued the whole time.
-It's--it's really pretty.
[Yuri] Shut up, Tamaki.
Okay, the only one
who's left is you, San.
Uh, actually, I had a present
but I somehow lost it.
Sorry, Mayu.
I'll make it up to you, 'kay?
Man, you're so clumsy, San.
The presents were your idea
in the first place.
I know, I know. Sorry.
I can't believe you, San.
[Mari] Seriously.
[Yuri] I was really looking
forward to seeing yours!
[Mayu]
This was such a great party.
Thank you, everyone.
[Mari]
I just love you so much, Mayu.
[Yuri] No, I love her more!
[Mari] But I said it first!
-[Yuri] What?
-[Mayu] Calm down, guys.
[Hina] Oh, that's right.
I brought some sweets.
Why don't we have some now?
[melancholy music]
[San exhales]
[groans]
[grunting]
[gasps]
[chuckles]
[giggles]
[gasping]
[panicked breathing]
[panicked breathing]
[gasps]
[breathing rapidly]
[San grunts]
[gasps]
[chuckles]
-[Tamaki] Hey!
-[gasps]
[Tamaki] Were you listening
to her just now?
She said the moths can't fly.
[screaming]
[San grunts]
[groans]
Ah, you were in here
this whole time?
-"HISTORY OF SERICULTURE"
-[Mayu] "Silk production?"
[chuckles]
I can't even remember the last
time I saw you studying.
[San grunts]
[Mayu] What a crazy day.
The party was fun, though.
And the sweets Hina brought
were so good.
[gasps]
Is something wrong?
Today, if it weren't for you
running to the lookout
to tell them about the planes,
then all of us would be--
Right. We were all saved because
of you, so good job spot--
[San] That's not true!
I only noticed it. That's all.
You're the one
who told everyone.
San.
[San] I wish I could be more
like you, Mayu.
I wanna be able to speak up more
and do what I think is right.
Actually...
I'm not really the kind
of person you think I am.
You are!
[grunts]
[exhales]
It'll be fine.
You don't need
to change yourself.
I promise you, okay?
Hey, bet you'll
feel better after a bath.
Mm.
[crickets chirping]
[San exhales sharply]
[inhales]
[exhales]
-[door opening]
-Mm?
Oh, uh, why are you awake?
You should be asleep already.
[gasps]
Wait, Miss.
Can I ask you something?
Why do silkworms get wings
if they aren't able to fly?
You know, that's a rather
interesting question.
[Teacher exhales]
You see, originally
the moths of silkworms
were creatures that could fly
like one would assume.
[San gasps]
[Teacher]
But in order to harvest
the silk more efficiently,
humans eventually bred away
their ability to fly.
When we boil them,
the pupae are still alive
in their cocoons, aren't they?
That's just--it's so sad.
They have to be boiled alive
in order to not damage
the silk thread.
Still, you are right
that it's sad.
[San gasps]
[Teacher]
After all, they are born
just so that we can take
their silk from them.
We've had so much work lately
that there hasn't been
much time for classes.
There's so many things
I wish I could have
taught you all about.
We have
an early morning tomorrow.
Go to bed. Goodnight.
Thank you.
Don't worry. I will.
Have a good night, too, Miss.
[door closes]
[exhales]
[San grunts]
[grunting]
[indistinct chatter]
[birds chirping]
I thought the hospital would
be in the middle of a town,
but this is
actually really far away.
We've been walking south
for a while now.
What? No! Unbelievable.
I forgot to bring my mirror.
-[both giggling]
-Mirror?
Tamaki, you know we'll be
working in a hospital, right?
I always wanna make sure
I look pretty
no matter where I am.
[all gasping]
-I guess we're here, then.
-Yeah.
[Teacher] Okay, everyone.
A little bit below us here
is the hospital.
You will all begin working there
as of today.
It was only set up a week ago.
Patients will start coming in
tomorrow so we have to make sure
everything's prepped
before then.
The path down there is narrow so
be careful and walk single-file.
[all] Yes, ma'am.
[all groaning]
[all grunt]
[Mari] This is a hospital?
[Yuri] But it's just a cave.
[Tamaki] I bet it would be fun
to go exploring.
[Hina] Remember, we're not here
to have fun.
-[Tamaki] Yeah, yeah.
-[San groans]
[San gasping]
[whimpers]
[shouting]
[Mayu grunting]
[San groaning]
[grunts]
Huh?
[all gasp]
[all exhale sharply]
Mayu.
Ah, San,
watch where you're going.
[all exhale]
-Thanks, Mayu.
-Hey, look.
[all] Huh?
[all] Whoa.
[all gasping]
[indistinct chattering]
[distant birds chirping]
[Mari gasps]
It's so pretty!
-It's like a spotlight!
-Yeah! It is, isn't it?
All the tools we need
are already here.
I heard there's even a pool
of water in here.
Thanks, guys,
for all of your help.
Now I could use a hand
getting those girls on task.
[both chuckle nervously]
[all] Ah!
[San grunting]
[Mayu grunts]
Whew. This isn't much different
from our usual
fortification work, is it?
-Guess not.
-For sure.
[Hina] This hospital's new.
You know, only a week ago,
this whole place was just
an ordinary cave.
We still have to finish
leveling out the ground
and putting up the lamps.
I kinda wish the teacher would
have told us about this sooner.
Yeah. If I had known
it was like this, I would have
-brought more lotion.
-Hina, you got a minute?
They've got a question for you
over at the reception area.
Sure, no problem.
Be right there.
San, Tamaki.
Will you go rinse off the rags
in the underground spring?
If the lights are out,
you can just add more oil.
Mayu, I want you
to help Mari and Yuri.
Okay? Sound good?
[all] Yes.
[indistinct chatter]
[gasps]
Hi, sorry, but is this
the way to the spring?
Yeah, it's down that way.
The enemy has split our forces
so they're now in the north
and the south.
How's the northern post?
We haven't been able
to reach them as of yet.
[Tamaki] This must be it, then.
[San exhales]
This is the hole
they were talking about.
I've heard caves like these
can have a lot of narrow paths.
-San, light, please.
-Oh, right. 'Kay.
[rattling]
-[San gasps]
-[match strikes]
[Tamaki exhales]
[both grunting]
[distant water drips]
[both exhale]
[Tamaki] It's huge.
[San] I can't see the end.
[water dripping]
[water lightly splashing]
Ah, this is such a pain.
We could just leave it and
find a place to sneak a break.
If we don't get back soon,
Hina's gonna get mad at us.
[Tamaki chuckles]
You're so serious.
You know that?
[San chuckles]
You think so?
[Tamaki]
When will you give it to her?
[gasping]
The present you made.
You haven't done it yet,
have you?
[whimpers]
Mm.
Ah, you should just
give it to her already.
I really admire you,
how you can just do whatever
you want without worrying.
[laughs]
No, I'm just selfish.
Is that what you think?
-[water splashes]
-[gasps]
Come on.
Don't give me that.
You actually consider
other people's feelings.
That's something
I could never do.
And that's one thing
I really like about you, San.
All right, should we head back?
Tamaki, we still haven't
finished rinsing these yet.
Ah, you caught me.
[both laugh]
[indistinct chattering]
[San grunts]
[San exhales]
Ah, it's just
so depressing in here.
It sure is.
It's suffocating
to be underground like this.
And it's so damp, too.
Guess we better get used to it.
[student A]
At least we won't get sunburt.
[student B]
You're always so positive.
[students laughing]
[crickets chirping]
[birds chirping]
[breathing deeply]
[quiet indistinct chatter]
Mm, hmm?
[all gasping and chattering]
[San gasps]
-[student C] They're so nice.
-[student D] Really pretty.
I find them soothing.
I'm calmer already.
[student E] Now I wanna
go pick some flowers.
[student F laughs]
I know, right?
[student E] I wonder
who put them here.
[student F] Yeah.
-Morning.
-Morning, Tamaki.
Ah.
[San inhales sharply]
So pretty.
[Tamaki] Yeah,
it was real gloomy yesterday.
You're the one who put
the flowers there, right?
What? Uh, yeah.
I had a feeling.
It's so like you.
I didn't think they'd make
everyone quite so happy, though.
-Oh.
-Ah.
[Tamaki] There's Mayu.
[Tamaki inhales]
San, give it to her right now!
Huh? Right now?
-Right now!
-Eh, but I'm supposed to go help
at the reception area right now.
Forget that.
I can cover for you.
It's just...
-Don't fight me on this!
-[whimpering]
You have to start having more
confidence in yourself, San.
There's nothing to worry about.
Everyone loves getting gifts,
especially when
they're from you.
So you'll do it, then?
Uh, yeah, I'll do it.
Glad we're on the same page.
[San exhales]
-Tamaki!
-[Tamaki] Hmm?
[San exhales]
Thanks for that.
[chuckles] You bet.
Hey, girls, stop slacking.
Get back to work.
-You're one to talk, Tamaki.
-Can you believe them?
Yeah,
you're not working, either.
[girls giggling]
-Morning.
-Morning.
Let me guess.
You got the flowers, right?
-[chuckles]
-It was easy to tell
since it was all your favorites.
[San grunts]
-Mayu.
-[Mayu] Hmm?
The other day when we were
celebrating your birthday,
I didn't get
the chance give you--
-[booming]
-[both shout]
[gasps]
[high-pitched ringing]
[San whimpering]
[San gasping]
-No! Stop, don't!
-[San screams]
[San] I think
if I were a silkworm...
and I knew what
the outside world was like...
I would go in my cocoon
and never leave.
I'd stay safe
wrapped up in there
and slowly wither away
until I died.
But...
the truth is...
[rain pattering]
[grunts]
[exhales]
[Mayu] San,
do you need some help?
[San grunts]
-[San grunting]
-San?
[student G] They're bringing
the wounded soldiers in!
Clear the way!
-How many soldiers are there?
-[student G] I don't know!
Are there enough beds for them?
I don't think so.
[student H] Move out of the way!
[San shudders]
[footsteps rapidly approaching]
-[all breathing heavily]
-[tense music]
[both gasp]
What are you doing?
Go make yourselves useful!
Those with the worst injuries
get treated first!
Fill the beds in the back!
Don't stop! Keep moving!
[both grunting]
[men groaning]
[indistinct chatter]
[water splashing]
[all speaking at once]
[can clatters]
[all groaning]
[both breathing heavily]
[men grunting]
[both gasping]
[San gasping]
Yuri.
Yuri.
I think maybe
you should take a break.
-What was that?
-[all gasp]
You can't just quit like that!
Everyone else is doing
their best, so get it together!
San, you're an upperclassman!
You should be working hard
and setting a good example.
You want us to work
but I don't even know what
I'm working for at this point.
[Kaede] What do you mean?
We're doing all this for
our country. Isn't that obvious?
For our country?
That's the reason we have to go
through all of this suffering?
[Kaede] Suffering?
The fact we're alive right now
is thanks to this country.
Which means working for them
is the same as
working for ourselves.
Everyone knows that!
All of this...
You're saying all of this
is for my own good?
And Tamaki?
So it was for her own good
that she had to die?
[San crying]
How can that be?
[Kaede grunts]
We're all struggling
to do our best,
so stop trying to debate me.
Every person here is serving
our country and thanks to that
we get an education and rations.
San, do you really think
you'd survive out there
on your own?
Hey, just keep quiet
and do what the teachers say.
-[San whimpers]
-[Kaede] Like the rest of us.
[footsteps leaving]
[distant crows cawing]
[girl] Come on. This way. Hurry.
[bottles rattle]
[birds chirping]
[bomb roaring]
[booming]
[all screaming]
[worried chatter]
[water sloshing]
[officer A]
Is there nothing we can do?
Not with the enemy everywhere.
How are we going
to protect the students?
We have bigger problems
right now!
Mother.
-Mother!
-[San gasping]
-[bucket clatters]
-[San screams]
[groaning]
M--Mother.
No! Help! Somebody! [grunts]
[both grunting]
[gasps]
-[Soldier A grunting]
-[San screaming]
[gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[bucket clattering]
[all shouting]
[Mayu] San!
Are you okay?
[San breathing heavily]
I have more work to do.
San.
They're low on water.
I need to go.
[San grunts]
[both gasping]
[wooden planks creaking]
[Mayu exhales sharply]
[footsteps approaching]
[water slowly dripping]
[Mayu inhales]
[Mayu exhales]
[gasps]
[San grunting]
[San whimpering]
[Mayu] San.
You should take a break.
What are you talking about?
I can't just stop!
You should be working, too!
Do you have any idea
how much work there is?
No one can take any breaks!
And now I have to...
Now I have to work
twice as hard
to make up for
Tamaki being gone.
It's my fault that...
[gasps]
[whimpers]
[sad piano music]
Why don't we both
take a little rest?
I can't stand it.
I know.
The blood, the bodies,
the soldiers, the bandages...
I don't wanna see any of it.
It'll be okay.
I'm right here by your side.
San, what if
I put a spell on you?
You can do that?
Mm. Close your eyes first.
[San inhales and exhales]
In this place,
there are no soldiers or bodies.
They're all just white shadows.
And drops of blood
are just petals from flowers.
Hang on. I'm not done yet.
Just imagine.
We're wrapped safely
inside a cocoon
as white as the snowy sky.
[birds chirping]
[Teacher] It seems
everyone is here now.
We've been given our orders.
Please listen
calmly and carefully.
As of right now, the military's
redesignated this hospital
to be their new command post.
So you must gather your things
and leave here
as soon as possible.
[all gasping]
But--but Miss,
where are we all supposed to go?
[gasps]
[shudders]
I suggest that you all
head south to the cape.
That will probably be
the safest place.
I'm going to stay here
and look after the other
students who were injured.
You'll be on your own
from now on.
You have to make decisions
for yourselves.
Won't there be
enemies out there?
Well, uh...
[Teacher shuddering]
You're dismissed.
[all gasping]
[indistinct whispering]
[all grunting]
[birds chirping]
[water rushing]
[birds chirping]
[footsteps approaching]
A town!
Looks like it was attacked
by enemy soldiers.
We need to get to the cape
as fast as we can.
Mm. It'll be fastest
if we go through the town.
That's true.
[Mayu] I don't see any smoke.
It must have been attacked
a while ago.
So there shouldn't
be anyone there, right?
[wind blowing]
I don't know.
-[San gasps]
-They're still discussing it.
San, is something wrong?
Well, uh, I think it's safer
if we go through the woods.
There might be enemy soldiers
hiding in town still.
You may be right.
Hey, what is it?
San thinks that we should
go through the woods instead.
-[San] Uh--
-I don't know.
But doing that would take
a lot longer, wouldn't it?
[student I] Would we all
be able to make it?
It won't be easy.
That's for sure.
Sorry. It was
just an idea, is all.
Hey, Mayu?
-[whimpering]
-You guys,
Yuri's feet really hurt.
Well, we have
been walking all day.
We'll try to get through
the town before dark.
You know what?
We might even be able
to find something to eat.
[student J] What do you think?
Should we bring up
the concerns you had?
Uh, no, no. It's okay.
Going through the town
is a better route anyway.
-[student J] All right.
-[student K] Come on! Let's go.
[all speaking at once]
[quiet, unsettling music]
It doesn't look
like anyone's here.
Guess everyone must
have evacuated already.
[Hina] Yuri's feet seem
to be holding up for now.
[Mayu] That's good.
How are you doing, Hina?
[San groans]
[Hina] Hanging in there.
[gasps]
[gasping]
[flies buzzing]
[shrieks]
[Mayu] San.
[San gasping]
You shouldn't
wander off on your own.
[San shudders]
[Mayu] Huh?
[gasps] Mayu!
-[gunfire]
-[San screams]
[girls screaming]
[San gasping]
[San] [panicked breathing]
[unsettling piano music]
San! Let's go!
[girls screaming]
[both breathing heavily]
[both shout]
[rapid gunfire]
[gasps] What do we do?
We're surrounded.
We're going to
have to make a run for it.
[San breathing heavily]
Once we get to the main street,
we can then find the road
out of town.
We won't make it!
I was right before.
We should have just
stayed in the woods!
Relax.
We'll be fine.
I'm right here with you.
Remember the spell I cast?
[whimpers]
[grunts]
'Kay, let's go.
[Mayu grunts]
[rapid gunfire]
-Now run!
-[San whimpers]
[both breathing heavily
and shouting]
[rapid gunfire]
[girls screaming]
[San breathing heavily]
[booming]
-[girls screaming]
-Don't stop! Hurry!
-[booming]
-[girls screaming]
[rapid gunfire]
[both grunting and gasping]
[gunfire]
[both breathing heavily]
-[both groaning]
-[rapid gunfire]
-[San whimpering]
-[Mayu] Let's go!
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[Mayu] This is far enough.
[San gasping]
[erratic breathing]
[gasps]
-Ah, you're here!
-San!
[Hina] You made it out okay!
[San] I thought I saw you
from the top of the hill.
[Hina] Mayu!
I wonder where we are now.
Yeah, well, I don't know.
I just ran.
It'll be okay.
Look, that's the sunset
over there.
Since we're nearing
harvest season,
if we head straight that way
then we should be able
to make it to the southern cape.
We shouldn't
stay here any longer.
I agree.
[San grunts]
[Hina grunts]
[gunfire]
[gasps]
-[both gasp]
-Are you okay?
[all grunting]
[rapid gunfire]
[all grunting and gasping]
[Hina whimpering]
[all grunting]
[all gasping]
[fire roaring]
[all gasping]
-[booming]
-[all gasping]
[Hina grunting]
-[both breathing heavily]
-Hina?
[Hina coughing]
[sniffles]
I can't go any further.
You sure?
[Hina] If you leave me,
you'll be able to make it.
-Don't touch me!
-[San gasps]
I don't wanna be the one
slowing you guys down.
Besides...
with my foot like this,
I won't be able
to scale the rocks at the shore.
[San whimpers]
You don't know that for sure!
[grunts] Come on!
[groaning loudly]
-Mayu!
-[Mayu gasps]
-[San whimpering]
-[Hina grunts]
-[Mayu grunting]
-[San whimpering]
What are you doing?
[both grunting]
-[booming]
-[all shouting]
[all gasping]
[San] No, Hina!
[Hina grunting]
[gasping]
-[Mayu grunting]
-[San whimpering]
[fire crackling]
[both grunting]
[crickets chirping]
[both breathing heavily]
San.
[San crying]
[exhales]
We have to try to make it
to the cape before dawn.
[San] We could have
tried to save her.
San.
[San] We could have
all gone together.
[Mayu] San.
[San] It's all your fault!
Because of you, Hina is--
It isn't like I had a choice!
I was just
trying to protect you!
[San] I didn't ask you
to do that!
We could have saved her
if we worked together!
[Mayu] Fine, then!
[Mayu shuddering]
You wanna go back?
Then you can go back,
but you'll die!
[gasps]
We both wanted the same thing.
I wanted to save her.
Mayu, you can't possibly
understand how I feel.
-I was--
-I can say the same about you!
Because there are things
that you just don't know!
The truth is...
[shudders]
We need water.
I'll go find some.
[San breathing uneasily]
[crickets chirping]
[San exhales sharply]
[shuddering]
[grunts]
[whimpers]
[exhales]
[breathing uneasily]
[gasps]
[whimpering]
I'm cold.
[soldier B] I'm so cold.
-[soldier B shivers]
-[San] [muffled shouting]
[San] In this place, there
are no soldiers or bodies.
[San and Mayu]
They're all just white shadows.
[melancholy piano music]
[water bubbling]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[crickets chirping]
[San whimpers]
[grunting]
[San gasps]
[soldier B gagging]
[Mayu grunts]
[San gasps and shouts]
[breathing heavily]
[soldier B groaning]
Ah, stop it! Mayu!
How dare you?
Don't touch her!
Mayu, snap out of it!
[Mayu gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[San gasps]
[labored breathing]
[Mayu shuddering]
[San gasps]
Please don't.
Don't do this, Mayu.
[shudders]
-[water flowing]
-[quiet somber music]
[both breathing heavily]
[crickets chirping]
[branches rustling]
[San grunts]
[San gasps]
Oh, no.
[San gasping]
How did this happen?
-They killed themselves.
-[San gasps]
[Mayu] They couldn't escape.
[San] But why?
They had no choice.
They were going to die
in the end anyway.
[San gasps]
-[distant booming]
-[both gasp]
Let's go.
Mm.
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[both breathing heavily]
[San grunting]
[breathing heavily]
Look, Mayu.
Everyone's here.
[indistinct whispering]
It's San!
[all gasping]
And Mayu's with her, too!
Mari! Yuri!
[all giggling]
[indistinct whispering]
I'm so glad.
I can't believe you're here.
-Yeah.
-Good to see both of you.
[Mayu grunts]
It's good to see you, too.
I was so worried.
I was gonna say that.
What about Hina?
Wasn't she with you?
[all exhaling]
I see.
[Kaede] San.
Looks like you and Mayu
are the last of us.
Isn't the cape just up ahead?
Why are you still here?
'Cause it's not safe
to go further.
There's nowhere for us to hide.
But there were soldiers
behind us heading this way.
Yeah, we heard them.
And that's why
we've come to a decision.
We're ending our own lives here.
[gasps] What?
It's better for us
to die together
than to be tortured
at the hands of the enemy.
That's what we all agreed on.
Right?
[San shudders]
It's what the soldiers
at the hospital told us to do
if we were trapped.
They said that the enemies
were cruel and ruthless.
I heard the same thing, too.
Even so, how can you just--
-[Kaede] What?
-[San gasps]
Do you remember
what the teacher said?
We have to make these decisions
for ourselves now.
You were there when she told us!
[San gasps]
Mari. Yuri.
-[loud booming]
-[all screaming]
[all gasping]
[Kaede] See? There's no way out.
[San shudders]
Mayu.
[gasps]
[San grunts]
Okay.
We can go do it over there.
[all quietly whispering]
[San shuddering]
[student L] Come on, Mayu.
You, too.
[San gasps]
[Kaede] Everyone, make a circle
around me.
[student M] Don't be scared.
We're all together.
[student N] You, too, San.
You can do this.
[Tamaki] Silk moths can't fly.
[San] What if I made a mistake?
[Teacher]
Bred away their ability to fly.
[Tamaki] You're so serious.
You know that?
[San]
I don't wanna see any of it.
It's okay.
Going through the town
is a better route anyway.
[Kaede] Just keep quiet and
do what the teachers say.
[gasps] No.
[grunts]
[grunts]
[indistinct whispering]
Everyone.
[breathing heavily]
You have to listen!
[all whimpering]
What is it?
Is something wrong?
It's just that...
I don't think that this is...
I don't think
that this is right!
-What? What do you mean?
-San.
We decided to die here together.
It's what we chose. All of us.
You didn't choose this.
[gasps]
[Kaede breathing shakily]
[grunts]
[all breathing shakily]
[San] Mari. Yuri. Let's go.
Sorry, San.
But I wanna stay here
with the others.
Me, too.
I want to stay here with Mari.
[San shudders]
[inhales sharply]
[grunts]
Well, I'm going to follow
the original plan
and go to the southern cape.
Mayu. Let's go.
[grunts]
[San grunting]
[Mayu gasping]
[all gasping]
[both breathing heavily]
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[Mayu breathing heavily]
[San grunting]
[Mayu grunting]
-[rock crumbles]
-[Mayu shouts]
[both grunt]
[both groaning]
[Mayu gasps]
[San exhales sharply]
[both grunting]
-[both breathing heavily]
-[gentle piano music]
[San] The cape!
[wind blows]
[gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[grunts]
All silkworms...
[Mayu gasps]
eventually break out
of their own cocoons.
[both chuckle]
[both grunting]
[both grunting]
[both breathing heavily]
We're almost there!
Almost there!
-[gunshot]
-[San gasps]
[San gasping]
-[Mayu groans]
-Mayu!
Mayu! [gasps]
[Mayu groans]
[both gasping]
[San shouts]
Mayu! Mayu!
[whimpering]
-[Mayu] San.
-Mayu.
[Mayu] I lied to you.
The truth is,
I was drafted into the army,
so I'm not...
[Mayu breathing erratically]
[San whimpering]
It's okay.
[gasps]
Thank you.
[San] Mayu.
[Mayu] San.
[emotional orchestral music]
[whimpers]
[inhales]
[grunts]
[gasps]
[grunts]
[water lapping]
[boots scrape]
[gun barrel rattles]
[inhales sharply]
[gasps]
[grunting]
[shuddering]
[uneasy breathing]
[shuddering]
[sharp musical sting]
[music fades]
[water gently lapping]
[birds chirping]
[girl giggling]
[indistinct chatter]
[birds chirping]
Understand?
The thread we harvest
from the silkworms
are used to make
the clothes we wear,
like shirts,
dresses, and sashes.
Lesson's over.
Now, who wants to play ball?
-Wait, San.
-[San] Hmm?
How come the silk moth can't fly
even though it has wings, huh?
[gasps]
[chuckles]
Well, that's because...
[all] Bye-bye!
[children giggling]
[melancholy piano music]
[wind blowing gently]
[exhales sharply]
[grunts]
[water gently lapping]
[San] My cocoon broke
and I emerged.
But even with wings,
I can't fly.
[exhales sharply]
Because of that...
I chose to keep living.
[Marika Ito's "Zutto Zutto Zutto
~cocoon Ver.~"]
[Marika Ito singing in Japanese]
[wind gently blowing]
[exhales]
[chuckles]
[San grunts]
[gasps]
[wind rushes]
[grunts]
[gasps]
[gasping and grunting]
[inhales and exhales sharply]
-[Mayu] San.
-[San gasping]
I knew I'd find you here.
Mayu.
What's in your hand?
Huh? Uh, it's, uh, nothing!
Yeah? Seems suspicious.
[Mayu] What is it?
What is it?
[Mayu] It's so peaceful here.
[San chuckles]
[San] This island
is always so beautiful and warm.
I imagine it's what
Heaven would be like.
[birds chirping]
[Mayu] Hey, San.
Have you ever seen snow before?
No, why?
When you exhale
on a cold winter day,
your breath looks like a long,
white cloud.
It almost looks like
silkworms spinning silk.
Silkworms?
[Mayu] When it snows
the whole world gets so quiet.
You can hear your voice
resonating around you.
It's like you're completely
wrapped up inside a cocoon.
[San] Wrapped in a cocoon?
Maybe we could
see it together one day.
[gasps]
Mm, yeah!
[Mayu] Okay,
we'd better head back now.
[melancholy piano music]
-[Mayu grunts]
-[indistinct chatter, laughter]
[San gasps]
Looks like it's almost time
for our shift to start.
I guess we lost track of time.
-Come on.
-[San grunts]
[indistinct chatter]
[all grunting]
[all] Keep going! Keep going!
[all grunting]
[horse brays]
[girls giggling]
[indistinct chatter]
[bell ringing]
I think we're gonna
make it back in time!
[Mayu shouts]
We still have to get changed!
[both whimpering and gasping]
[melancholy piano music]
Well done, girls.
You were able to complete
all the morning duties.
As I explained to you all
before, we're moving tomorrow.
A new military hospital
will be opening soon.
[Mayu gasps]
[Teacher] I still need to go
finish making the preparations
with them for that.
-[both giggle]
-We made it.
Barely.
-Mari and Yuri are looking.
-[San] Hmm?
Unit two will
instead resume classes,
but the rest of
our regular classes
will be canceled this afternoon.
[girls snickering]
[Teacher]
I'll be on site at the hosp--
something the matter, girls?
This is very important.
The war's about to enter
a very critical phase.
Now more than ever,
you must all try to conduct
yourselves responsibly.
And moving forward, I will
not allow any more tardiness.
[all laughing]
[Teacher] That's all for now.
Everyone, you know where to go.
Dismissed.
[all] Yes, ma'am.
[San grumbles]
If it hadn't been for you two,
we wouldn't have gotten
in trouble with the teacher!
[Yuri] We were only
paying attention to the teacher
like we were supposed to.
-Right, Mari?
-Yeah!
And besides,
it was your own fault
for being late
in the first place.
-Sure was.
-Okay, fine.
That may be true, but still.
[all shouting]
-[thuds]
-[both gasping]
-Are you okay?
-[Mayu] Are you hurt?
-[Yuri groans]
-[Mayu exhales sharply]
Geez. I tried to tell you
we shouldn't carry so much.
Liar! I'm not the one who said
to carry it all at once!
-You were!
-Why are you blaming me?
You're the one who fell down
all on your own!
What? You were the one
who pushed me over!
You were in such a big hurry
to get ready for the party
that you weren't
paying attention and--
[Mari shushes]
A party?
That was supposed
to be a secret, remember?
Well, it was all your fault
for picking a fight!
Uh, San, how 'bout
you go see Hina?
I'll stay here and
help these two out.
Heh, yeah, okay.
-[girls grumbling]
-[Mayu chuckles nervously]
[birds chirping]
[Hina] Hmm.
-[Tamaki groans]
-[Hina] Huh?
It's so hot.
[Hina] Hi, Tamaki.
I'm gross and sweaty.
[Hina chuckles]
Well, it is summer.
I really hate
getting all sunburnt.
Is that the reason you've been
skipping out on work today?
[chuckles]
You noticed?
It was obvious.
And how are you feeling?
Better than usual today.
-[San] Hina!
-[both gasp]
I brought some water for you!
[breathing heavily]
-Here.
-Thank you, San.
Hey, where's mine?
You can go get it for yourself,
Tamaki.
-What?
-I'll share my water with you.
Wow!
That's a really great drawing.
It's a silkworm, right?
[Hina] Yeah. I've been reviewing
last week's lesson.
Hmm? Wait. What?
-"COCOONING IS WHEN THE SILK..."
-[Hina] Oh, right here?
-"COCOONING IS WHEN THE SILK..."
-[Hina] This says "cocooning."
You two will learn more
about it next year.
I'm not really
a fan of bugs, you know.
Is it true silkworms
are boiled to make silk?
[Hina] Yeah, that's right.
But if you do that, doesn't
that mean they'd all die?
[Hina chuckles]
I think maybe I should explain
it from the beginning, then.
Oh.
[Hina] Silkworms only have
a lifespan of about two months.
-[San] Hmm.
-[Hina] Right after hatching
from their eggs, the larvae
feed on mulberry leaves
-and grow rather quickly.
-[Tamaki] Mm!
[Hina] They keep molting
as they grow larger in size.
Then the larvae spins a silk
string for two or three days
to make a cocoon
around themselves.
-[Tamaki] Oh, okay.
-[Hina] And inside,
that is where
they become pupas.
And then we boil the pupas
in their cocoons
so we can harvest the silk.
All the pupas.
-However...
-Huh?
A portion of the pupas
are kept alive
so they can lay eggs
for the next cycle.
You see? So it's not like
all the silkworms die.
[Tamaki] Wow, Hina.
You'd make
a really great teacher.
[Hina laughs] Wanna try
and draw one, Tamaki?
[Tamaki] No! I told you,
I really hate bugs!
[Tamaki] No, thanks!
[Hina]
But they're cute close up. See?
[gentle curious music]
[Tamaki] San.
San!
Hey!
Were you listening
to her just now?
She said the moths can't fly.
What?
Bet you didn't even know that,
did you?
[all laughing]
[birds chirping]
[Yuri] Hina,
are you not gonna finish that?
[Mari] Lunchtime is almost over.
Seeing that I didn't do
very much work today,
why don't you
have the rest, Yuri?
Really? All right, then.
You better eat fast.
[Hina chuckles nervously]
Hey, anyone know
what San's doing?
Huh.
[Tamaki]
I think she said something
about finding rare flowers.
[Mari exhales sharply]
[exhales and giggles]
-[bell ringing]
-[gasps]
Ah, I'm not ready
to go to work yet!
You're not gonna skip like
you did this morning, right?
-[San chuckles]
-Let's go, San!
Our lunch break is over!
We still gotta finish
chopping up those trees!
[gasps] Okay!
Uh...
[exhales]
[gasps]
[grunting]
[gasps]
-[Mari] San!
-[gasps]
We're going to be late!
-We're gonna leave without you!
-Wait, hold on.
[Mari] We'll be in big trouble
with the teacher
if we don't get
it all finished today!
[Yuri] Come on! We gotta go!
Hey! Something wrong?
Mm, no.
We should probably try
to catch up with the others.
-San?
-[grunts]
Well, I don't see it there
anymore but
for a second I thought I saw,
-like, a flash in the sky.
-[gasps]
San, that could be...
I'll go tell the lookout!
Wait! 'Cause what if
I made a mistake?
[Mayu breathing heavily]
Don't worry.
I'll tell her that
I was the one who saw it.
Okay?
[San gasping]
-[all] Huh?
-[San gasps]
[both breathing heavily]
[Mayu grunting]
[San grunts]
[grunting]
Hey, Shiho!
Can you hear me?
What's up?
Somethin' wrong?
We had a sighting upwind!
Can you see anything?
Hold on! Let me check!
[grunting]
[Shiho grunting]
Hmm.
[gasping]
This is bad.
[gasping]
[Shiho] Mayu! San!
We have an emergency!
[both gasp]
[horn music blaring]
[all gasping]
[grunting]
There's an air raid coming
from the direction of the cape!
Everyone, camouflage the area
and hide yourselves
as fast as you can!
How much time?
One minute!
[tense music]
[all screaming]
[animal footsteps galloping]
[plane engines roaring]
[all shouting at once]
[Mayu and San breathing heavily]
Come on.
We need to go help them.
Hina, let's get
you somewhere safe.
-Ah, no! I wanna help, too!
-Wait!
[all grunting]
[all shouting at once]
[horse whinnying]
[girls shouting]
[horse hooves clopping]
[both grunting]
[all shouting]
[all grunting]
[grunting]
[music fades]
All right, Tamaki,
I think that's good enough.
[Tamaki grunting]
-San, let's go.
-[San] Okay.
[all speaking quietly]
[both grunt]
[whimpering]
[gasps]
[both gasp]
[Mayu grunts]
Tamaki!
[Tamaki] Hm? What is it?
[San gasps]
[student in pink] Mayu! Tamaki!
What are you doing?
-[Tamaki] You okay?
-I'm sorry!
[Mayu] Here. Let us help.
[student in yellow]
Hurry, please!
[student in dark orange]
You can do it!
[student in white] Get up, Kaho!
[both grunting]
[all shouting]
[plane engines roaring]
[girls whimpering]
[girls gasping]
[all breathing nervously]
[all giggling]
[all laughing and cheering]
[girls shouting]
That wasn't as bad as I thought.
[student in pink] Yeah,
it was a piece of cake.
[girls giggling]
[San grunts]
-[distant birds chirping]
-[gentle music]
[Mari] All right, now that
we have a spare moment,
it's finally time
for our surprise birthday party
for Mayu!
Right! And to celebrate
her six-month anniversary
of living on the island!
Yeah!
[all laughing and clapping]
And now our guest of honor,
the one and only...
Mayu, our good friend.
[Tamaki] Whoo! Yeah!
[all laughing]
Wow. Time really flew by.
Give a speech, Mayu!
Come on!
Huh? Well, uh, sure.
Thanks, everyone.
This party is really sweet.
I've only been here
for six months
but it feels like I've been here
so much longer.
[Mayu exhales]
I'm grateful for all of you.
Thank you for everything.
-[both gasping]
-[laughing and clapping]
But you're mostly
talking about me, right?
Ah, ow!
-Okay, point taken.
-You just had to ruin it.
[Hina] This is for you.
-Huh?
-[giggles]
What is it?
I thought
I'd give you mine first.
Since it's a special occasion,
we wanted to bring you
some presents.
That book's a collection
of my favorite poems.
I hope you haven't
read this one yet.
-[giggles]
-[gasps]
Thanks, Hina.
This is so thoughtful.
Okay, it's my turn. Here.
[snickers]
-A boxwood comb.
-That's cool.
It looks pretty fancy.
[Tamaki] Oh, there's this new
hairstyle I wanna try on you.
Hey.
[Hina] Tamaki always has such
good taste.
[Mari and Yuri]
It's our turn next! Our turn!
[San giggles]
Yuri and I have...
This one gift
from the both of us.
[Yuri] Ta-dah!
[Mari] It's a pressed flower
bookmark.
-[San exhales sharply]
-[Tamaki] Ooh!
-Wow, you made this?
-[Hina] That's really pretty.
[both giggling]
It's so big. This must've
taken you guys forever.
[Mari and Yuri]
We made it together!
[Tamaki] And they probably
-argued the whole time.
-It's--it's really pretty.
[Yuri] Shut up, Tamaki.
Okay, the only one
who's left is you, San.
Uh, actually, I had a present
but I somehow lost it.
Sorry, Mayu.
I'll make it up to you, 'kay?
Man, you're so clumsy, San.
The presents were your idea
in the first place.
I know, I know. Sorry.
I can't believe you, San.
[Mari] Seriously.
[Yuri] I was really looking
forward to seeing yours!
[Mayu]
This was such a great party.
Thank you, everyone.
[Mari]
I just love you so much, Mayu.
[Yuri] No, I love her more!
[Mari] But I said it first!
-[Yuri] What?
-[Mayu] Calm down, guys.
[Hina] Oh, that's right.
I brought some sweets.
Why don't we have some now?
[melancholy music]
[San exhales]
[groans]
[grunting]
[gasps]
[chuckles]
[giggles]
[gasping]
[panicked breathing]
[panicked breathing]
[gasps]
[breathing rapidly]
[San grunts]
[gasps]
[chuckles]
-[Tamaki] Hey!
-[gasps]
[Tamaki] Were you listening
to her just now?
She said the moths can't fly.
[screaming]
[San grunts]
[groans]
Ah, you were in here
this whole time?
-"HISTORY OF SERICULTURE"
-[Mayu] "Silk production?"
[chuckles]
I can't even remember the last
time I saw you studying.
[San grunts]
[Mayu] What a crazy day.
The party was fun, though.
And the sweets Hina brought
were so good.
[gasps]
Is something wrong?
Today, if it weren't for you
running to the lookout
to tell them about the planes,
then all of us would be--
Right. We were all saved because
of you, so good job spot--
[San] That's not true!
I only noticed it. That's all.
You're the one
who told everyone.
San.
[San] I wish I could be more
like you, Mayu.
I wanna be able to speak up more
and do what I think is right.
Actually...
I'm not really the kind
of person you think I am.
You are!
[grunts]
[exhales]
It'll be fine.
You don't need
to change yourself.
I promise you, okay?
Hey, bet you'll
feel better after a bath.
Mm.
[crickets chirping]
[San exhales sharply]
[inhales]
[exhales]
-[door opening]
-Mm?
Oh, uh, why are you awake?
You should be asleep already.
[gasps]
Wait, Miss.
Can I ask you something?
Why do silkworms get wings
if they aren't able to fly?
You know, that's a rather
interesting question.
[Teacher exhales]
You see, originally
the moths of silkworms
were creatures that could fly
like one would assume.
[San gasps]
[Teacher]
But in order to harvest
the silk more efficiently,
humans eventually bred away
their ability to fly.
When we boil them,
the pupae are still alive
in their cocoons, aren't they?
That's just--it's so sad.
They have to be boiled alive
in order to not damage
the silk thread.
Still, you are right
that it's sad.
[San gasps]
[Teacher]
After all, they are born
just so that we can take
their silk from them.
We've had so much work lately
that there hasn't been
much time for classes.
There's so many things
I wish I could have
taught you all about.
We have
an early morning tomorrow.
Go to bed. Goodnight.
Thank you.
Don't worry. I will.
Have a good night, too, Miss.
[door closes]
[exhales]
[San grunts]
[grunting]
[indistinct chatter]
[birds chirping]
I thought the hospital would
be in the middle of a town,
but this is
actually really far away.
We've been walking south
for a while now.
What? No! Unbelievable.
I forgot to bring my mirror.
-[both giggling]
-Mirror?
Tamaki, you know we'll be
working in a hospital, right?
I always wanna make sure
I look pretty
no matter where I am.
[all gasping]
-I guess we're here, then.
-Yeah.
[Teacher] Okay, everyone.
A little bit below us here
is the hospital.
You will all begin working there
as of today.
It was only set up a week ago.
Patients will start coming in
tomorrow so we have to make sure
everything's prepped
before then.
The path down there is narrow so
be careful and walk single-file.
[all] Yes, ma'am.
[all groaning]
[all grunt]
[Mari] This is a hospital?
[Yuri] But it's just a cave.
[Tamaki] I bet it would be fun
to go exploring.
[Hina] Remember, we're not here
to have fun.
-[Tamaki] Yeah, yeah.
-[San groans]
[San gasping]
[whimpers]
[shouting]
[Mayu grunting]
[San groaning]
[grunts]
Huh?
[all gasp]
[all exhale sharply]
Mayu.
Ah, San,
watch where you're going.
[all exhale]
-Thanks, Mayu.
-Hey, look.
[all] Huh?
[all] Whoa.
[all gasping]
[indistinct chattering]
[distant birds chirping]
[Mari gasps]
It's so pretty!
-It's like a spotlight!
-Yeah! It is, isn't it?
All the tools we need
are already here.
I heard there's even a pool
of water in here.
Thanks, guys,
for all of your help.
Now I could use a hand
getting those girls on task.
[both chuckle nervously]
[all] Ah!
[San grunting]
[Mayu grunts]
Whew. This isn't much different
from our usual
fortification work, is it?
-Guess not.
-For sure.
[Hina] This hospital's new.
You know, only a week ago,
this whole place was just
an ordinary cave.
We still have to finish
leveling out the ground
and putting up the lamps.
I kinda wish the teacher would
have told us about this sooner.
Yeah. If I had known
it was like this, I would have
-brought more lotion.
-Hina, you got a minute?
They've got a question for you
over at the reception area.
Sure, no problem.
Be right there.
San, Tamaki.
Will you go rinse off the rags
in the underground spring?
If the lights are out,
you can just add more oil.
Mayu, I want you
to help Mari and Yuri.
Okay? Sound good?
[all] Yes.
[indistinct chatter]
[gasps]
Hi, sorry, but is this
the way to the spring?
Yeah, it's down that way.
The enemy has split our forces
so they're now in the north
and the south.
How's the northern post?
We haven't been able
to reach them as of yet.
[Tamaki] This must be it, then.
[San exhales]
This is the hole
they were talking about.
I've heard caves like these
can have a lot of narrow paths.
-San, light, please.
-Oh, right. 'Kay.
[rattling]
-[San gasps]
-[match strikes]
[Tamaki exhales]
[both grunting]
[distant water drips]
[both exhale]
[Tamaki] It's huge.
[San] I can't see the end.
[water dripping]
[water lightly splashing]
Ah, this is such a pain.
We could just leave it and
find a place to sneak a break.
If we don't get back soon,
Hina's gonna get mad at us.
[Tamaki chuckles]
You're so serious.
You know that?
[San chuckles]
You think so?
[Tamaki]
When will you give it to her?
[gasping]
The present you made.
You haven't done it yet,
have you?
[whimpers]
Mm.
Ah, you should just
give it to her already.
I really admire you,
how you can just do whatever
you want without worrying.
[laughs]
No, I'm just selfish.
Is that what you think?
-[water splashes]
-[gasps]
Come on.
Don't give me that.
You actually consider
other people's feelings.
That's something
I could never do.
And that's one thing
I really like about you, San.
All right, should we head back?
Tamaki, we still haven't
finished rinsing these yet.
Ah, you caught me.
[both laugh]
[indistinct chattering]
[San grunts]
[San exhales]
Ah, it's just
so depressing in here.
It sure is.
It's suffocating
to be underground like this.
And it's so damp, too.
Guess we better get used to it.
[student A]
At least we won't get sunburt.
[student B]
You're always so positive.
[students laughing]
[crickets chirping]
[birds chirping]
[breathing deeply]
[quiet indistinct chatter]
Mm, hmm?
[all gasping and chattering]
[San gasps]
-[student C] They're so nice.
-[student D] Really pretty.
I find them soothing.
I'm calmer already.
[student E] Now I wanna
go pick some flowers.
[student F laughs]
I know, right?
[student E] I wonder
who put them here.
[student F] Yeah.
-Morning.
-Morning, Tamaki.
Ah.
[San inhales sharply]
So pretty.
[Tamaki] Yeah,
it was real gloomy yesterday.
You're the one who put
the flowers there, right?
What? Uh, yeah.
I had a feeling.
It's so like you.
I didn't think they'd make
everyone quite so happy, though.
-Oh.
-Ah.
[Tamaki] There's Mayu.
[Tamaki inhales]
San, give it to her right now!
Huh? Right now?
-Right now!
-Eh, but I'm supposed to go help
at the reception area right now.
Forget that.
I can cover for you.
It's just...
-Don't fight me on this!
-[whimpering]
You have to start having more
confidence in yourself, San.
There's nothing to worry about.
Everyone loves getting gifts,
especially when
they're from you.
So you'll do it, then?
Uh, yeah, I'll do it.
Glad we're on the same page.
[San exhales]
-Tamaki!
-[Tamaki] Hmm?
[San exhales]
Thanks for that.
[chuckles] You bet.
Hey, girls, stop slacking.
Get back to work.
-You're one to talk, Tamaki.
-Can you believe them?
Yeah,
you're not working, either.
[girls giggling]
-Morning.
-Morning.
Let me guess.
You got the flowers, right?
-[chuckles]
-It was easy to tell
since it was all your favorites.
[San grunts]
-Mayu.
-[Mayu] Hmm?
The other day when we were
celebrating your birthday,
I didn't get
the chance give you--
-[booming]
-[both shout]
[gasps]
[high-pitched ringing]
[San whimpering]
[San gasping]
-No! Stop, don't!
-[San screams]
[San] I think
if I were a silkworm...
and I knew what
the outside world was like...
I would go in my cocoon
and never leave.
I'd stay safe
wrapped up in there
and slowly wither away
until I died.
But...
the truth is...
[rain pattering]
[grunts]
[exhales]
[Mayu] San,
do you need some help?
[San grunts]
-[San grunting]
-San?
[student G] They're bringing
the wounded soldiers in!
Clear the way!
-How many soldiers are there?
-[student G] I don't know!
Are there enough beds for them?
I don't think so.
[student H] Move out of the way!
[San shudders]
[footsteps rapidly approaching]
-[all breathing heavily]
-[tense music]
[both gasp]
What are you doing?
Go make yourselves useful!
Those with the worst injuries
get treated first!
Fill the beds in the back!
Don't stop! Keep moving!
[both grunting]
[men groaning]
[indistinct chatter]
[water splashing]
[all speaking at once]
[can clatters]
[all groaning]
[both breathing heavily]
[men grunting]
[both gasping]
[San gasping]
Yuri.
Yuri.
I think maybe
you should take a break.
-What was that?
-[all gasp]
You can't just quit like that!
Everyone else is doing
their best, so get it together!
San, you're an upperclassman!
You should be working hard
and setting a good example.
You want us to work
but I don't even know what
I'm working for at this point.
[Kaede] What do you mean?
We're doing all this for
our country. Isn't that obvious?
For our country?
That's the reason we have to go
through all of this suffering?
[Kaede] Suffering?
The fact we're alive right now
is thanks to this country.
Which means working for them
is the same as
working for ourselves.
Everyone knows that!
All of this...
You're saying all of this
is for my own good?
And Tamaki?
So it was for her own good
that she had to die?
[San crying]
How can that be?
[Kaede grunts]
We're all struggling
to do our best,
so stop trying to debate me.
Every person here is serving
our country and thanks to that
we get an education and rations.
San, do you really think
you'd survive out there
on your own?
Hey, just keep quiet
and do what the teachers say.
-[San whimpers]
-[Kaede] Like the rest of us.
[footsteps leaving]
[distant crows cawing]
[girl] Come on. This way. Hurry.
[bottles rattle]
[birds chirping]
[bomb roaring]
[booming]
[all screaming]
[worried chatter]
[water sloshing]
[officer A]
Is there nothing we can do?
Not with the enemy everywhere.
How are we going
to protect the students?
We have bigger problems
right now!
Mother.
-Mother!
-[San gasping]
-[bucket clatters]
-[San screams]
[groaning]
M--Mother.
No! Help! Somebody! [grunts]
[both grunting]
[gasps]
-[Soldier A grunting]
-[San screaming]
[gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[bucket clattering]
[all shouting]
[Mayu] San!
Are you okay?
[San breathing heavily]
I have more work to do.
San.
They're low on water.
I need to go.
[San grunts]
[both gasping]
[wooden planks creaking]
[Mayu exhales sharply]
[footsteps approaching]
[water slowly dripping]
[Mayu inhales]
[Mayu exhales]
[gasps]
[San grunting]
[San whimpering]
[Mayu] San.
You should take a break.
What are you talking about?
I can't just stop!
You should be working, too!
Do you have any idea
how much work there is?
No one can take any breaks!
And now I have to...
Now I have to work
twice as hard
to make up for
Tamaki being gone.
It's my fault that...
[gasps]
[whimpers]
[sad piano music]
Why don't we both
take a little rest?
I can't stand it.
I know.
The blood, the bodies,
the soldiers, the bandages...
I don't wanna see any of it.
It'll be okay.
I'm right here by your side.
San, what if
I put a spell on you?
You can do that?
Mm. Close your eyes first.
[San inhales and exhales]
In this place,
there are no soldiers or bodies.
They're all just white shadows.
And drops of blood
are just petals from flowers.
Hang on. I'm not done yet.
Just imagine.
We're wrapped safely
inside a cocoon
as white as the snowy sky.
[birds chirping]
[Teacher] It seems
everyone is here now.
We've been given our orders.
Please listen
calmly and carefully.
As of right now, the military's
redesignated this hospital
to be their new command post.
So you must gather your things
and leave here
as soon as possible.
[all gasping]
But--but Miss,
where are we all supposed to go?
[gasps]
[shudders]
I suggest that you all
head south to the cape.
That will probably be
the safest place.
I'm going to stay here
and look after the other
students who were injured.
You'll be on your own
from now on.
You have to make decisions
for yourselves.
Won't there be
enemies out there?
Well, uh...
[Teacher shuddering]
You're dismissed.
[all gasping]
[indistinct whispering]
[all grunting]
[birds chirping]
[water rushing]
[birds chirping]
[footsteps approaching]
A town!
Looks like it was attacked
by enemy soldiers.
We need to get to the cape
as fast as we can.
Mm. It'll be fastest
if we go through the town.
That's true.
[Mayu] I don't see any smoke.
It must have been attacked
a while ago.
So there shouldn't
be anyone there, right?
[wind blowing]
I don't know.
-[San gasps]
-They're still discussing it.
San, is something wrong?
Well, uh, I think it's safer
if we go through the woods.
There might be enemy soldiers
hiding in town still.
You may be right.
Hey, what is it?
San thinks that we should
go through the woods instead.
-[San] Uh--
-I don't know.
But doing that would take
a lot longer, wouldn't it?
[student I] Would we all
be able to make it?
It won't be easy.
That's for sure.
Sorry. It was
just an idea, is all.
Hey, Mayu?
-[whimpering]
-You guys,
Yuri's feet really hurt.
Well, we have
been walking all day.
We'll try to get through
the town before dark.
You know what?
We might even be able
to find something to eat.
[student J] What do you think?
Should we bring up
the concerns you had?
Uh, no, no. It's okay.
Going through the town
is a better route anyway.
-[student J] All right.
-[student K] Come on! Let's go.
[all speaking at once]
[quiet, unsettling music]
It doesn't look
like anyone's here.
Guess everyone must
have evacuated already.
[Hina] Yuri's feet seem
to be holding up for now.
[Mayu] That's good.
How are you doing, Hina?
[San groans]
[Hina] Hanging in there.
[gasps]
[gasping]
[flies buzzing]
[shrieks]
[Mayu] San.
[San gasping]
You shouldn't
wander off on your own.
[San shudders]
[Mayu] Huh?
[gasps] Mayu!
-[gunfire]
-[San screams]
[girls screaming]
[San gasping]
[San] [panicked breathing]
[unsettling piano music]
San! Let's go!
[girls screaming]
[both breathing heavily]
[both shout]
[rapid gunfire]
[gasps] What do we do?
We're surrounded.
We're going to
have to make a run for it.
[San breathing heavily]
Once we get to the main street,
we can then find the road
out of town.
We won't make it!
I was right before.
We should have just
stayed in the woods!
Relax.
We'll be fine.
I'm right here with you.
Remember the spell I cast?
[whimpers]
[grunts]
'Kay, let's go.
[Mayu grunts]
[rapid gunfire]
-Now run!
-[San whimpers]
[both breathing heavily
and shouting]
[rapid gunfire]
[girls screaming]
[San breathing heavily]
[booming]
-[girls screaming]
-Don't stop! Hurry!
-[booming]
-[girls screaming]
[rapid gunfire]
[both grunting and gasping]
[gunfire]
[both breathing heavily]
-[both groaning]
-[rapid gunfire]
-[San whimpering]
-[Mayu] Let's go!
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[Mayu] This is far enough.
[San gasping]
[erratic breathing]
[gasps]
-Ah, you're here!
-San!
[Hina] You made it out okay!
[San] I thought I saw you
from the top of the hill.
[Hina] Mayu!
I wonder where we are now.
Yeah, well, I don't know.
I just ran.
It'll be okay.
Look, that's the sunset
over there.
Since we're nearing
harvest season,
if we head straight that way
then we should be able
to make it to the southern cape.
We shouldn't
stay here any longer.
I agree.
[San grunts]
[Hina grunts]
[gunfire]
[gasps]
-[both gasp]
-Are you okay?
[all grunting]
[rapid gunfire]
[all grunting and gasping]
[Hina whimpering]
[all grunting]
[all gasping]
[fire roaring]
[all gasping]
-[booming]
-[all gasping]
[Hina grunting]
-[both breathing heavily]
-Hina?
[Hina coughing]
[sniffles]
I can't go any further.
You sure?
[Hina] If you leave me,
you'll be able to make it.
-Don't touch me!
-[San gasps]
I don't wanna be the one
slowing you guys down.
Besides...
with my foot like this,
I won't be able
to scale the rocks at the shore.
[San whimpers]
You don't know that for sure!
[grunts] Come on!
[groaning loudly]
-Mayu!
-[Mayu gasps]
-[San whimpering]
-[Hina grunts]
-[Mayu grunting]
-[San whimpering]
What are you doing?
[both grunting]
-[booming]
-[all shouting]
[all gasping]
[San] No, Hina!
[Hina grunting]
[gasping]
-[Mayu grunting]
-[San whimpering]
[fire crackling]
[both grunting]
[crickets chirping]
[both breathing heavily]
San.
[San crying]
[exhales]
We have to try to make it
to the cape before dawn.
[San] We could have
tried to save her.
San.
[San] We could have
all gone together.
[Mayu] San.
[San] It's all your fault!
Because of you, Hina is--
It isn't like I had a choice!
I was just
trying to protect you!
[San] I didn't ask you
to do that!
We could have saved her
if we worked together!
[Mayu] Fine, then!
[Mayu shuddering]
You wanna go back?
Then you can go back,
but you'll die!
[gasps]
We both wanted the same thing.
I wanted to save her.
Mayu, you can't possibly
understand how I feel.
-I was--
-I can say the same about you!
Because there are things
that you just don't know!
The truth is...
[shudders]
We need water.
I'll go find some.
[San breathing uneasily]
[crickets chirping]
[San exhales sharply]
[shuddering]
[grunts]
[whimpers]
[exhales]
[breathing uneasily]
[gasps]
[whimpering]
I'm cold.
[soldier B] I'm so cold.
-[soldier B shivers]
-[San] [muffled shouting]
[San] In this place, there
are no soldiers or bodies.
[San and Mayu]
They're all just white shadows.
[melancholy piano music]
[water bubbling]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[inaudible]
[crickets chirping]
[San whimpers]
[grunting]
[San gasps]
[soldier B gagging]
[Mayu grunts]
[San gasps and shouts]
[breathing heavily]
[soldier B groaning]
Ah, stop it! Mayu!
How dare you?
Don't touch her!
Mayu, snap out of it!
[Mayu gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[San gasps]
[labored breathing]
[Mayu shuddering]
[San gasps]
Please don't.
Don't do this, Mayu.
[shudders]
-[water flowing]
-[quiet somber music]
[both breathing heavily]
[crickets chirping]
[branches rustling]
[San grunts]
[San gasps]
Oh, no.
[San gasping]
How did this happen?
-They killed themselves.
-[San gasps]
[Mayu] They couldn't escape.
[San] But why?
They had no choice.
They were going to die
in the end anyway.
[San gasps]
-[distant booming]
-[both gasp]
Let's go.
Mm.
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[both breathing heavily]
[San grunting]
[breathing heavily]
Look, Mayu.
Everyone's here.
[indistinct whispering]
It's San!
[all gasping]
And Mayu's with her, too!
Mari! Yuri!
[all giggling]
[indistinct whispering]
I'm so glad.
I can't believe you're here.
-Yeah.
-Good to see both of you.
[Mayu grunts]
It's good to see you, too.
I was so worried.
I was gonna say that.
What about Hina?
Wasn't she with you?
[all exhaling]
I see.
[Kaede] San.
Looks like you and Mayu
are the last of us.
Isn't the cape just up ahead?
Why are you still here?
'Cause it's not safe
to go further.
There's nowhere for us to hide.
But there were soldiers
behind us heading this way.
Yeah, we heard them.
And that's why
we've come to a decision.
We're ending our own lives here.
[gasps] What?
It's better for us
to die together
than to be tortured
at the hands of the enemy.
That's what we all agreed on.
Right?
[San shudders]
It's what the soldiers
at the hospital told us to do
if we were trapped.
They said that the enemies
were cruel and ruthless.
I heard the same thing, too.
Even so, how can you just--
-[Kaede] What?
-[San gasps]
Do you remember
what the teacher said?
We have to make these decisions
for ourselves now.
You were there when she told us!
[San gasps]
Mari. Yuri.
-[loud booming]
-[all screaming]
[all gasping]
[Kaede] See? There's no way out.
[San shudders]
Mayu.
[gasps]
[San grunts]
Okay.
We can go do it over there.
[all quietly whispering]
[San shuddering]
[student L] Come on, Mayu.
You, too.
[San gasps]
[Kaede] Everyone, make a circle
around me.
[student M] Don't be scared.
We're all together.
[student N] You, too, San.
You can do this.
[Tamaki] Silk moths can't fly.
[San] What if I made a mistake?
[Teacher]
Bred away their ability to fly.
[Tamaki] You're so serious.
You know that?
[San]
I don't wanna see any of it.
It's okay.
Going through the town
is a better route anyway.
[Kaede] Just keep quiet and
do what the teachers say.
[gasps] No.
[grunts]
[grunts]
[indistinct whispering]
Everyone.
[breathing heavily]
You have to listen!
[all whimpering]
What is it?
Is something wrong?
It's just that...
I don't think that this is...
I don't think
that this is right!
-What? What do you mean?
-San.
We decided to die here together.
It's what we chose. All of us.
You didn't choose this.
[gasps]
[Kaede breathing shakily]
[grunts]
[all breathing shakily]
[San] Mari. Yuri. Let's go.
Sorry, San.
But I wanna stay here
with the others.
Me, too.
I want to stay here with Mari.
[San shudders]
[inhales sharply]
[grunts]
Well, I'm going to follow
the original plan
and go to the southern cape.
Mayu. Let's go.
[grunts]
[San grunting]
[Mayu gasping]
[all gasping]
[both breathing heavily]
[both breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
[Mayu breathing heavily]
[San grunting]
[Mayu grunting]
-[rock crumbles]
-[Mayu shouts]
[both grunt]
[both groaning]
[Mayu gasps]
[San exhales sharply]
[both grunting]
-[both breathing heavily]
-[gentle piano music]
[San] The cape!
[wind blows]
[gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[grunts]
All silkworms...
[Mayu gasps]
eventually break out
of their own cocoons.
[both chuckle]
[both grunting]
[both grunting]
[both breathing heavily]
We're almost there!
Almost there!
-[gunshot]
-[San gasps]
[San gasping]
-[Mayu groans]
-Mayu!
Mayu! [gasps]
[Mayu groans]
[both gasping]
[San shouts]
Mayu! Mayu!
[whimpering]
-[Mayu] San.
-Mayu.
[Mayu] I lied to you.
The truth is,
I was drafted into the army,
so I'm not...
[Mayu breathing erratically]
[San whimpering]
It's okay.
[gasps]
Thank you.
[San] Mayu.
[Mayu] San.
[emotional orchestral music]
[whimpers]
[inhales]
[grunts]
[gasps]
[grunts]
[water lapping]
[boots scrape]
[gun barrel rattles]
[inhales sharply]
[gasps]
[grunting]
[shuddering]
[uneasy breathing]
[shuddering]
[sharp musical sting]
[music fades]
[water gently lapping]
[birds chirping]
[girl giggling]
[indistinct chatter]
[birds chirping]
Understand?
The thread we harvest
from the silkworms
are used to make
the clothes we wear,
like shirts,
dresses, and sashes.
Lesson's over.
Now, who wants to play ball?
-Wait, San.
-[San] Hmm?
How come the silk moth can't fly
even though it has wings, huh?
[gasps]
[chuckles]
Well, that's because...
[all] Bye-bye!
[children giggling]
[melancholy piano music]
[wind blowing gently]
[exhales sharply]
[grunts]
[water gently lapping]
[San] My cocoon broke
and I emerged.
But even with wings,
I can't fly.
[exhales sharply]
Because of that...
I chose to keep living.

~cocoon Ver.~"]
