Dining with the Kapoors (2025) Movie Script
1
[Ranbir] Hi, guys. Hi.
[man 2, in Hindi] Stay
in the center of frame.
[woman 1] I'll raise the chair.
-Is it fully raised? It is.
-[man 3] Yes.
[man 4, in English] Guys, silence please.
We're shooting. Rolling sound.
[man 5] Silence! Silence!
-[man 6] Sound's rolling.
-[upbeat music plays]
You won't keep so much, right?
[in Hindi] Only some bits?
[in English] The full show's
not on me, no?
[in Hindi] Once I open my mouth,
I can't stop.
[in English] How do I answer?
I can't say I'm a warm person myself.
Keep the vegetarians on one end.
Keep Rima on the other end.
[in Hindi] Edit it to make me look
as thin as possible. [chuckles]
[chortling]
[in English] Of course, I can see you.
Can you see me? [laughs]
After 30 years now,
I know my face a little bit. [chortles]
[laughing]
[man 7] Ranbir Kapoor interview.
Shot one, take... [groans and chuckles]
Agastya
-Agastya.
-[man 7] Agas
Give it to me. Give it to me.
This is quite intimidating. [chuckles]
Hi, this is Kareena Kapoor Khan.
And quite prominently
in the Kapoor family tree.
Pretty high up on the branch.
So, we're playing a game called
[in Hindi] "Guess the Kapoor?"
[in English] Hey, I'm not going to answer
all these. There are mean ones also.
"Which Kapoor googles their own name?"
Uh, is that a question?
[in Hindi] Everyone
must be doing it in secret.
[in English] They love to know
what people are talking about.
-I would say Lolo.
-What?!
"Which Kapoor is the biggest gossip?"
Bebo.
Oh, and Ranbir, for sure.
-Ranbir.
-Ranbir.
-Kareena.
-Not at all.
Kapoor family doesn't gossip.
[chuckles]
Kareena and Ranbir.
Kareena and me, right?
They would've said our names,
but that's not true.
"Which Kapoor tips off the paparazzi?"
"Or is the friendliest?"
All the Kapoors love the paparazzi.
Definitely not me.
[in Hindi] Who? I don't know.
I am from Delhi. [laughs]
Armaan.
Hmm
[in English] "The friendliest?" My mother.
I know who has diabetes and who has
high blood pressure and things like that.
I don't think we need
to tip off the paparazzi.
In fact, we tip them
to not click us, please. [chuckles]
We don't want to be clicked.
-[music slows down]
-[vehicle horn blaring]
[people clamoring]
[man 1, in Hindi] That'll do.
Don't go any closer!
[man 2] Enough. Enough.
-[reporters clamoring]
-[peppy accordion music playing]
[man 3] Shara ji, please wait.
[in English] Yes, yes, thank you.
[man 2, in Hindi] Look at the center.
-[man 3, in English] Look center.
-[man 4, in Hindi] How's everyone?
[in English] Thank you. Thank you.
[man 5, in Hindi] Here.
[man 6, in English] Center.
-[man 3] Both look center.
-[in Hindi] Ma'am, this way. More light.
Today is 100th Birthday.
-[man 7, in English] Yes.
-We're celebrating that.
-Big day.
-[man 7] Yes. Big Day.
-Yes, is the light good?
-[man 8, in Hindi] Ma'am, here.
Why do you need lights?
-You're evergreen.
-Ever...
[reporters chuckling]
-Hello!
-[chorus] Hello!
-[woman 1] Welcome, welcome, welcome.
-How are you?
-Aadar saunters in.
-[Navya] Thank you.
-Wow, this is really nice.
-[Navya] Hello!
You're looking cool, Shaira.
I don't know, I'm just
You've worn blue?
-Hello!
-[Neela] Hello ji!
[Nitasha] It's been so long
since we've met. So long. How are you?
-So colorful and nice.
-[Neetu] Thank you!
-We are quite matching.
-I know, I was gonna say that...
[chuckles] You're just one shade darker.
-[Aadar] Hi.
-Hi, Aadar.
-[Aadar] How are you doing?
-I'm good.
[excitedly] Hi Raha!
Poi-poi. Poi-poi
Say "Boo".
-[air kisses] Hi!
-And this is Aunt? Grandmom?
-[in Hindi] Grandmom.
-Aunt Grandmom.
-[in English] Hi, Raha!
-Poi-poi, she can call her.
-[reporters clamoring] Hi!
-Hello, hello, hi, hi
-[camera shutters clicking]
-[reporters clamoring indistinctly]
-[woman 1] Hello!
-Hello.
-How are you?
-[woman 1] I'm good.
[Kunal] Hi, how are you?
-How are you doing?
-Yeah. [chuckles]
-[both] Hi.
-How are you?
Good.
-[man 1] Royal couple of Bollywood.
-[Hindi] Who are the Royal Couple?
[reporters] You, sir! You are!
-Do you call everyone that?
-[man 2] No. You exclusively.
-You tell everyone.
-Everyone's favorite.
-[man 3] No, no.
-[in English] Thank you.
-Hi! Hi!
-Hello! Hi!
-[woman 2] Hello! And welcome!
-[woman 3] You look so pretty.
-What's happening, guys?
-It's quite...
[indistinct greetings]
-[in Hindi] What's going on?
-Not much.
-[in English] It's a little strange.
-Yeah.
It's kind of real.
-Hello.
-[Saif] It's kind of real. But
-[Aadar] Hi, Bebo didi. What's happening?
-All of you are sitting and waiting for us
like I don't know what.
-Namaste. How are you?
-[Randhir] Namaste, I'm well.
From within, inside,
it's like any normal family.
[snorts and chuckles] It's
The entire Kapoor family
is a dramatic family.
They're so, you know, all over the place.
Everybody likes to talk
to each other at the same time. [snorts]
-You are the one who is dramatic.
-[Kareena] I'm not.
-Moi?
-[Neetu] Total drama.
-Dramatic.
-[woman 2] That's why you came in.
[Kareena] Why is he here?
-[Neetu] What's he saying?
-I can't hang with Ranbir.
-[Neetu, in Hindi] What did you say?
-[in English] Are you recording this?
[guests laughing]
-All the way up.
-I was not. This story...
-[Ranbir] Once she opened the door
-Sorry, sorry. Cut.
-[laughs]
-Like a modern family. More of a senior
[Saif] It's really rare to have a family
with so many unique,
interesting characters that are also nice.
Liberal-minded,
kind of very cool people.
[upbeat music continues]
Funny, loving, united.
I would use these words
to describe my family.
[in Hindi] They're very fond of eating.
Bombil!
Bombil. [in English] Bombay duck.
-[Neetu] He used to have Bombay duck.
-[sucks tongue] Fried.
[in Hindi] They love to laugh.
-[laughs]
-[Kareena] And they love being together.
[in English] So we are people
who are [in Hindi] passionate.
[in English] But for each other
and in each other's company.
-Even you eat a lot.
-But you saw me
-Yeah.
-Neetu aunty, when I was
-She was pregs.
-pregnant and you were firing me.
"Don't eat so much."
I said, "But I'm pregnant."
She's like, "So what?"
[all laughing]
-She cooked butter chicken for me.
-[woman 2] Yeah, I cooked for all of you.
None of you have ever taken me out
for dinner. I'm still waiting.
-Didn't have money. Now we can.
-[Pooja, in Hindi] Old excuse.
Now you all have money, right?
I mean, I'm okay also if he doesn't
because the food is coming. So. [chuckles]
[Agastya] And they love
talking about food a lot.
Some sentence, some food will come up.
You're like, "We're talking something
else. Why are you talking about food?"
They don't say, "Hello, how are you?
What's happening?"
They come in to dinner and say,
"What's there for dinner tonight?"
That's the Kapoors for you. [chuckles]
[peppy music playing]
[Armaan] For me, the emotion
when it comes to food is just happiness.
Especially at tadkas,
you know, lots of ghee.
[onions sizzling in ghee]
Pound the garlic and throw it in.
Just that aroma is beautiful.
I love my fish curry, rice
Fried fish.
The macaroni and cheese.
[in Hindi] With ghee on top,
[in English] then you know
that this is a real Kapoor.
[in Hindi] When they eat like that,
you know that this is a real Kapoor kid.
[guests talking]
Outstanding.
But the beginning goes down to my dada,
Prithviraj Kapoor.
He actually is the original one
who started this whole family union.
Laughter, gaiety.
Oh my God, it was crazy.
And great food.
My grandmother used to have
a lovely spread always.
And Raj Kapoor, my father.
He obviously then
kept the tradition going.
[lively saxophone and piano music playing]
[in Hindi] If someone is eating
at the table with Raj saab,
[in English] that was a big thing,
because then he's listening to you.
Because his stories always began
also over a meal.
[in Hindi] "Bring out the food"
was his thing.
[in English] And he would listen.
And lunch was not like "lunch".
It was like lunch.
If there were even three people
coming for a meal,
there would be like 30 dishes
on the table.
And everybody would be like, "But why?"
So, this lunch is, is a special one.
It's, uh, Raj Kapoor's 100th birthday.
[Karisma] And I think
it's a perfect celebration.
And Armaan has planned
some fantastic food.
[in Hindi] Food is just an excuse.
There can't be a better excuse.
[in English] Hundred years of Raj Kapoor.
I think our grandfather
seeded in us this passion,
which is the common thread
between each and every Kapoor,
which is their love for food.
[music intensifies and fades]
[lively song playing over stereo]
[Rima] I wish, you know, Armaan,
I was just thinking,
Papa's birthday is coming up, 100th year.
And we have to do something.
-I wish the house was there.
-Yeah.
I mean, I can't even imagine
to tell you what all days
we've seen in that home.
And especially his birthdays, my God.
Because he he loved his birthdays.
And he would feel
it's the national holiday.
-So it's like, national holiday.
-[chuckles]
[in Hindi] It's
Raj Kapoor's birthday, man.
[in English] So then,
all of us have not gone to school.
We are enjoying.
[lively music playing]
[Rima] And I was always the most excited
because I used to be
always in the front, with Papa.
And when the cake cutting was there,
stand right next to him
when he's cutting the cake
with his father and mummy,
and then Papa and I would have a dance.
And
Oh, memories!
[lively music continues]
Raj Kapoor is not just Raj Kapoor,
Papa, Dada, Nana.
Raj Kapoor is everybody's.
-[sneezes]
-[man] God bless you.
Somebody is remembering me.
To someone who doesn't know
who Raj Kapoor is, I would say
that he is perhaps the most influential
film director, producer
and actor in Indian cinema.
The 1950s was his decade.
The kind of influences
from people like Charlie Chaplin,
the beauty of the black and white
movies that he shot,
the camera work, the music
[music tempo increases]
and the romanticism he brought
to Indian cinema was path breaking.
You watch those films today,
and, and they stand
the test of time as true classics.
[in Hindi] My shoes are Japanese
These pants are English
The red hat I wear is Russian
But my heart is Indian
My shoes are Japanese...
[in English] His movies
are played all around the world.
There's a sort of emotional connect
that his films have
that just resonates with people.
I mean, when Awara released in Moscow,
it played for almost two years.
And when Nana ji would visit Russia,
the crowds would just go crazy.
[people cheering]
[in Hindi] No one loves me
I'm the darling of the desolate town
And the barren street
I'm a free-spirit
I'm a free-spirit
I'm a wandering star in the sky
I'm a free-spirit
[in English] So many people till today
come up to me and say,
"I was Raj saab's assistant."
A lot of people,
and they're producers today.
And he was like,
"I'm what I am because of Mr. Raj."
Everyone is in this business
because of the man himself.
Because he was the ultimate,
ultimate showman.
[sweeping music playing]
I am basically [chuckles]
an ordinary man.
I am nothing
too big or great.
I don't claim I have
any academic qualifications,
except that I have been quite aware
of what is around me,
and hence got to know
a little bit of human philosophy.
And that is probably what has
given birth to the clown in me.
And that clown,
even at the cost of my tears,
tries to make somebody happy.
[guests laughing]
[Nitasha] You all know how time flies.
-There aren't those kind of films made.
-But the style I've seen Dada ji
-Prithviraj Kapoor was very tall.
-He looked tall.
Ask the group over there.
-[Neetu] Kunal, how tall was Dada ji?
-Dada ji?
[Kunal] I think he was about 6'-6'1".
-Yeah, so same as Nana ji.
-Yeah.
He was taller than Shammi uncle.
-No, Papa was six and half an inch.
-No, no, no.
-Bebo, you're a normal height.
-Yeah.
-What's your height?
-[Kareena] 5'5".
[Neetu] I'm 5'6", so let's see.
Take out your shoes.
[in Hindi] Let's corner her today.
-[Kareena, in English] You're taller.
-[man 1] Same, same.
-What? I'm 5'6".
-No, see? [in Hindi] From the shoulder.
-[in English] You are taller, Mom.
-Yeah, she is taller.
-So you are 5'5 ", Neetu aunty is 5'6".
-She's half an inch.
[Navya] I don't think it's common to see
five generations in a room together.
And I'm really glad
that we got that opportunity
from so many of the elders
in this family for as long as we did.
-She's my cousin.
-[Navya and Anissa chuckle]
-Don't say it.
-She's our niece, stupid.
She is my cousin.
[Riddhima] She's our niece.
-[in Hindi] You are my cousin.
-[Navya, in English] No!
-You call me Bua?
-Yeah.
Oh, dear God.
I've always called you "Riddhima bua".
-You said Bua?
-Yeah.
That wouldn't be
a very smart answer from you.
We've grown up with Armaan, Aadar
and Ranbir from this family tree.
But I have Zahan, I have
I forget, there's so many of us
that it's really hard to keep track.
But there are
lots of uncles in the family.
But we're all so close in age
that I call them my cousins. [chuckles]
-[food sizzling]
-[music fades]
[Armaan] I am also one of those
many uncles in this large Kapoor family.
[in Hindi] Is the chutney ready?
[food sizzling]
[in English] I'm Armaan Jain,
Raj Kapoor's grandson.
I, uh, tried to follow in the footsteps
of my grandfather.
Tried to become an actor,
but it didn't work out.
So I followed my dream,
I followed my passion.
I started a delivery kitchen
called the Junglee Kitchen,
which is basically my family recipes
over the last 100 years put together.
[upbeat music playing]
And I'm hosting this lunch
to celebrate those 100 years.
[Armaan] Guys.
-[all cheering] Whoa!
-[Armaan] Sorry.
-What is happening?
-[man 1] Oh, you're here.
-Chef Ali Khan.
-[guests laughing]
Guys, good, good.
Thank you for being here.
-[Ranbir] Man of the moment.
-Thank you.
[Armaan] But before we go any further,
let me explain to you
this massively complicated
Kapoor family tree.
[Saif] He's my favorite.
[music fades]
Prithviraj Kapoor, my great-grandfather.
He married Ramsarni Kapoor.
They had four children.
Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor,
Urmila Kapoor Sial, and Shashi Kapoor.
So let me take just the Raj Kapoor family.
Raj Kapoor, my grandfather,
married Krishna Kapoor.
They had five children.
Randhir Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, Rishi Kapoor,
Rima Jain, and Rajiv Kapoor.
Randhir married Babita.
Their two daughters, Karisma and Kareena.
Karisma's two children,
Samairah and Kiaan.
Kareena married Saif.
Their boys, Taimur and Jehangir.
Ritu married Rajan.
Their two children, Nitasha and Nikhil.
Nikhil married Shweta.
Their two kids, Navya and Agastya.
Rishi married Neetu.
Their children, Riddhima and Ranbir.
Riddhima married Bharat.
Their daughter, Samara.
Ranbir married Alia.
And their daughter, Raha.
Rima, my mum, married my dad, Manoj.
Their two children,
Armaan, that's me, and Aadar.
Aadar married Alekha, I married Anissa.
And our son, Rana.
[chuckles] And that's pretty much
our very small family.
-[guests chatting loudly]
-That's the problem, no speech, but, uh
[guests shushing]
Okay, I, I, uh
Can you increase the volume?
-My voice? [chuckles]
-[Randhir] Increase the volume.
All your life, you've told his mother
to decrease her volume.
-You're telling him
-That's
-[guests laughing]
-[Kareena chuckling] Yeah.
To get the Kapoor family's date
to reach at this one location
is always a challenge.
Everyone wants to be there,
but their schedules are so busy
that there's always
one or two people missing.
-We knew you'll steal the limelight.
-[Nitasha and Karisma] Just come!
[Armaan] Even for today's lunch,
so many couldn't make it.
Alia, my cousin Nikhil,
Agastya,
and even the person who helped me
organize this in the first place,
my mum, who wasn't feeling too well.
-[Kareena] Come fast!
-Hi! Hi!
Oh, I feel like crying!
-Okay, then get up and come.
-No crying.
But I'm so happy,
I'm so happy, everyone's there and
-But just come.
-Come, come for a bit.
Daboo, you should be on that swing.
Rima aunty fell sick
and we were all really upset
and it was like no lunch or no fish curry
would taste the same without Rima aunty.
The pay as won't taste the same
if Rima aunty is not on the table.
We like to have that,
that bonding and that energy with her.
Randhir, I'm wearing your favorite outfit.
I've seen you 500 times in this shirt.
[all laughing]
If you change your shirt, you can come.
[all laughing]
Why can I not come?
[Armaan] My mum really wanted
to have this lunch at Deonar Cottage,
which was my grandfather
Raj Kapoor's home.
[upbeat music continues]
[Armaan] But since it's been sold,
I decided to recreate some of the magic
from that home.
[slow violin music plays]
Cutie! [chuckles]
[Kareena] Leave it on.
Leave it on.
[camera shutter clicks]
[Riddhima] Take it out. [chuckles]
-No? [chuckles]
-No. [chuckles]
[Ranbir] Armaan had created
the world of Deonar Cottage.
It reminded me of
exactly how the Sunday lunches were.
And I never thought
I would get to experience that again.
He had the swing, that famous swing.
My granddad used to sit on that swing.
There's such a cute video
of both of you and Papa.
-Hmm. Hmm.
-And he said,
[in Hindi] "Change your clothes".
-You said, "I'll wear it tomorrow."
-[all laughing]
[pensive music playing]
[Ranbir, in English] My name is
my grandfather's name.
His real name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor.
That's how he used to sign his checks.
And, uh, when I was born, I think
they were running out of names from "R".
So my
Granduncle, Mr. Shammi Kapoor,
told Raj Kapoor,
"Since you've not used this name,
let's give it to him."
So I got the name Ranbir from him.
[in Hindi] "The world calls me a joker."
[Raj Kapoor, in English]
"Such a time was born"
[in Hindi] Are you listening to me
or just singing away?
[in English] My grandfather,
he used to hide these caramel toffees
in his fridge inside his room.
[in Hindi] We had to stand in a queue.
He used to tell us
to salute him and we used to do it.
[in English] And then he says, "Give me
a kiss," and we used to kiss his cheek.
And then all of us
got that caramel toffee,
and that seemed
like a very big prize you know.
So each time we entered his room,
[in Hindi] we used to line up.
-Come! Come!
-Come! Come!
[Nitasha] There were
a lot of chickens in Chembur.
He'd always feed them
by calling out "ah-ah".
So, I told him, "If you call out 'ah-ah'
to me, I'll come to Mumbai from Delhi."
[in English] Actually,
you know, like, passing the studio
and then going to the bungalow was
such a tradition to look there
and see that banner outside.
And it was such a [inhales deeply]
I don't know, exciting
and amazing feeling, like a dream.
-[lively music playing]
-[birds chirping]
I got married and then I came
to this beautiful, beautiful home,
which was called Deonar Cottage.
[birds chirping]
Each member of the family
welcomed me, like,
like, they treated me like I was
like everything to them, you know.
And I also loved everybody,
not because they were my in-laws.
Because I really loved them.
[music fades]
That place has always been very special
to everybody, the entire family.
Sit on Sundays for hours, you know.
Reach there at 12.30 p.m.
and not leave till 7 p.m.
And all the cousins
and all the uncles and aunts,
they constantly had a smile on their face.
'Cause everybody looked forward
to that feeling more than anything.
You know, the feeling of joy,
feeling of family, feeling of love.
[pensive music continues]
[Rima] I can't believe this is going.
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-[Rima] Mango tree.
[birds chirping]
[Karisma] Chimpu uncle's room here.
-Come.
-[Armaan] And we came here one last time.
Our family home, a place that's
given us so many memories.
I'll, I'll really miss it.
But I'm happy I, I got my mum there.
Uh, I'm happy Daboo uncle,
who lived all his life there, was with us.
[Rima] This whole part was Papa's room.
-And my room was exactly on top.
-[Armaan chuckles]
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-And his door was here.
-And he knew everybody coming and going.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
[Rima] Sitting over there,
hiding his mangoes and his eggs.
[in Hindi] I was good friends with my dad,
but we also had our fights.
Sometimes, a very intense fight
would break out.
Then I would leave and go to my room,
slamming my door shut.
"I won't talk to you.
I have nothing to say!"
Then he'd write a note to me.
And send it through his staff
to my room upstairs.
Telling them to hand it over to me.
I used to read the note, and it would say,
"I'm here today,
but you will miss me
"when I'm not here anymore."
[pensive music playing]
[in English] Wow, look at Dada ji.
-[Armaan] Holi.
-[Karisma] So cool.
-Lolo, look at you and Dada.
-Oh my God. [chuckles]
-This is such an amazing picture.
-[music slows]
-Unbelievable memories.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
Daboo, remember when all the grandchildren
used to sit there, he used to tell us
[in Hindi] to put them to bed
or to play with them,
he'd say, "doll-doll doll-doll"
"doll-doll doll-doll"
[in English] Don't say it more.
-Daboo!
-[Karisma, Armaan chuckle]
-[upbeat music playing]
-One, two, three, four.
My grandfather's swing,
which he always used to sit on,
and everyone would come there
and greet him.
And then there would be a little chat
with each guest.
[lively music playing]
I'm telling everybody
"Please come, have food,"
and my mother was going
around the house, asking everybody
[in Hindi] what they would
like to eat and drink.
It would be such a huge party
that everyone in Mumbai wished that
[in English] "We are invited."
It used to be beautiful.
I mean she was such a gracious hostess.
She was like a, you know,
a maestro,
like in an orchestra.
And food and food and food
and, and the drinks and the snacks
and everything happening.
[upbeat music continues]
[in Hindi] Ranbir
and my bedtime was, what?
[in English] Eight o'clock. 8 p.m.
[in Hindi] We were kids.
[in English] We'd be
in my grandmother's room,
which had a window
which could look at the lawns.
And it was lot of fun
to kind of look at people.
[in Hindi] Who's come?
[in English] We didn't know
the names, who was who.
[in Hindi] But our didi, our house help,
she used to tell us,
"Well, so-and-so have come."
[in English] Those grand
Bollywood parties that everybody spoke.
But it was just different
because it was not just actors.
It was people who loved art
coming together.
[music fades]
[birds chirping]
[Rima] What are you feeling?
I feel lovely whenever I come here.
Feast your eyes, it's the last time.
Yeah.
I'll miss the place.
-[wistful music playing]
-[birds chirping]
And I wish whoever comes to live here
has a better life than he's having.
-Because we've had a very good life here.
-Yeah.
[wistful music continues]
[in Hindi] And I also remember
something my mother said.
"When we are no longer around,
and all of you will be in your own homes,
"don't let this house go to ruin."
[in English] "You know,
just sell it. Let it go."
[music fades]
-[Navya] Everyone's starving.
-[Kareena] Where's the food?
-You've been here for a while?
-[Armaan] What's happening outside?
-[Ranbir] Waiting for food.
-[Armaan] I'm going mental.
-[Navya] Everyone's hungry.
-I'm really sorry. Sorry about this.
-[Navya] The whole thing?
-[Armaan] No!
-Stressing?
-We put it in the wrong thing.
-You put it. You are putting.
-[Navya] He said put it in that!
Put put. Put the whole thing.
[Navya] We were waiting for Armaan
to come out with the food.
And when he wasn't coming out,
we went into the kitchen
and realized that
Armaan was a colossal mess
and was severely stressed out. [chuckles]
-Tadka for?
-Dahi pakora curry.
-Don't you put ghee in your tadka?
-Lots of ghee. I'll put extra ghee.
-You're sure? Not half?
-It'll taste good. It'll taste super. Aah!
Armaan and I spent
a lot of time with Ranbir.
We had so many interests, you know.
We all played football in the same team.
Uh, he bought me my first football shoes.
He was like that older,
cooler brother, you know,
that, that we would want to go and meet.
Wrestling was a very big thing
at that time.
And I used both of them as guinea pigs,
I used to constantly throw them around.
He shows love in a very different way.
-[tempering sizzles]
-Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
-You bloody...
-[Armaan grunts]
-I didn't realize. Sorry.
-You burnt me.
Sorry, sorry, you got hurt?
-Sorry.
-It's okay.
-[Navya] Shaira, Zahan!
-[in Hindi] Guys. Cut the vegetables.
-[in English] The professionals are here.
-[screeches] Shaira! Butter the kulchas!
-I'm making desi food, not continental.
-[Hindi] That's fine.
[Ranbir] He's put
so much butter in this dal.
-[Armaan] Yes, you know
-It's a full cholesterol attack.
-Armaan!
-[Armaan] Yeah, yeah!
-Shout! Shout!
-For table 18.
[Armaan] I have a lot of pressure
to get food on the table.
-Let's go! Let's go!
-Hello?!
-Shaira's not doing anything.
-[Armaan, in Hindi] Is that rice?
[in English] I don't think this is
the correct way to butter kulchas.
-You're plating the rice?
-Yeah.
Oh, wild! This is gonna really save time.
Guys, Navya has already plated
like six plates of rice.
-We're good on time.
-I'm the most helpful person.
Not bad. But what are you serving?
But this looks like a Japanese serving.
Well done, Shaira.
Well done. Good buttering.
-What about me?
-[in Hindi] She's an expert at buttering.
-[in English] Super.
-[Zahan] Is your tempering ready?
It looks ready, yeah.
-[in Hindi] Salt okay?
-[in English] Wow.
[Pooja] Your tadka is ready.
-[in Hindi] Butter it, Shaira.
-[Shaira, in English] Shut up!
Zahan!
-Did you taste truffle?
-It's not there.
-I couldn't.
-[Navya] It's going in the dal?
Yeah, he has a very famous truffle dal.
-[in Hindi] Wipe his sweat.
-It's okay. [in English] I'm good.
-You're good? It'll fall in our food.
-I like huh?
-[in Hindi] Don't put it in our food.
-[in English] The tadka.
-The real tadka.
-I'll do.
That is that is love.
-When the sweat falls into your food.
-[Pooja] Eww.
-The ghee. That is love.
-[in Hindi] Do this.
-Come on. [in English] Group hug.
-[all] Group hug.
-Come on, Pooja.
-[Shaira] Me!
[Ranbir] We were extremely hungry.
I think it was 3 p.m. already.
And the family gets a bit cranky
when they don't get their food on time.
So, leaving, I also reminded him.
"Hurry up, man. We're hungry, you know."
"Which Kapoor has no filter?"
Ranbir.
He shoots out.
[in Hindi] He just says anything.
Rima also blurts out sometimes.
[in English] Not this,
but the generation above us,
none of them had a filter.
Daboo, Chimpu, Rima,
my husband had no filter.
In this generation, Kareena.
[funky music playing]
I think all the Kapoors
don't have a filter, do they?
You can't just name one.
The entire family.
"Which Kapoor
is the biggest [in Hindi] 'ghutan'"?
"Ghee-tone?"
"Gluten?"
-"Glutton."
-But what is glutton? [chuckles]
Like, one who stuffs himself?
Toss-up between me, Armaan, Aadar.
Rima bua.
[funky music continues]
Ranbir?
I think so Ranbir loves to eat a lot.
He can really eat. Once I was shocked.
I said, "Ranbir, you eat so much?"
-They all eat well. [chuckles]
-[in Hindi] I can't name them. [chuckles]
[calls out] Chimpu!
No one could eat as much as him.
Other folks come,
chomp food for ten minutes and leave.
He would go on eating and eating
Oh, goodness!
[Ranbir, in English] What was
your childhood breakfast?
-[Riddhima] Everything.
-Rye milk.
-I'm really hungry now.
-[Riddhima] Even I'm hungry.
-So hungry.
-Tell your husband
[in Hindi] to bring the food.
[in English] This is turning out to be
a typical Kapoor lunch.
-[Kareena] Yeah.
-[Armaan] Guys, the food's finally ready.
-Yay! Yay!
-Yay! Yay, Armaan!
Sorry for the long delay, but
-Let's go, guys!
-[Armaan] Let's have a feast.
-Come.
-Chef Ali.
-Saifu, where are you?
-[Saif] Yeah, here, jaan. Hi.
-[Bharat] We are ready, let's go.
-[Kareena] Let's go.
[guitar strums entry music]
-[Armaan] Come.
-[Riddhima] Yay!
-Wow, this is insane.
-Oh, my god! Oh, my god! That's my mom.
-Wait, did Armaan get baby photos?
-Yeah.
That's how you're supposed
to find your place.
[Aadar chuckles] Definitely not.
-That's Tashu.
-[chuckles]
[Saif] Look who's that.
[Kareena] That's Papa.
[calls out] Papa!
-That's me, right?
-[Anissa] Yes.
[Saif] Fab. That's Tim.
-That's Tim?
-[Kareena] Full Tim?
-Full Tim.
-Is that you?
-Looks like him.
-[Saif] Nice picture.
-He looks like Taimur.
-[indistinct chatter]
-[Neetu] So cute.
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-[Saif] Is that Lolo?
-[Kareena] Lolo. Yeah.
-[Navya] Neila aunty's here.
-Okay.
-You're next to your favorite person. Me.
-[Armaan] Next to both your favorites.
-Even I'm here. This one.
-Next to your favorite people.
I'm here.
-[Armaan] That's Bebo.
-[Pooja] How cute.
-Oh, that's me.
-[Armaan] That's you.
[Kareena] So cute, right?
Aadar. Oh, God.
Ranbir, you saw your picture?
I love these pictures.
So nice, man.
[Armaan] Okay, guys.
-So...
-[Kareena] Yay!
-Can you wear that hat, please?
-[Kareena] Armaan.
-[Randhir] They're serving tea now.
-[Armaan, chuckles] No. Sorry.
I know it's already teatime almost.
But, but food's ready.
[Kareena] But the Kapoors
always eat lunch at teatime.
Yeah. [chuckles]
I'm doing it differently
where we aren't doing it the Kapoor style
where we kind of have
all those hand is on the table.
I'm trying to plate it.
-What?!
-Yeah, I'm plating it. Course by course.
-Are we paying for it?
-[chuckles]
-[Armaan chuckles] No.
-[all chuckle]
Not paying for it,
but we'll have fun between the courses.
So I'm just gonna go in,
get the first course.
-Yeah, you have to be with us.
-[Navya] Yay!
-[Ranbir] Let's go.
-Yay!
-[Kunal] Let's go.
-[Ranbir] Go for it.
[lively music playing]
[Zahaan] Come on.
-There are no place mats. Nothing.
-[in Hindi] Food's here!
[Kareena, in English] Yay!
Okay, I must tell you,
my first core memory of any kind of food
was this mac and cheese that Dadi
used to make and she used to call it bake.
And I don't know if this is legal,
but she used to temper it with ghee.
[all chuckle]
Remember, she used to cook
on that small choolah outside?
[Neetu] And every dinner
there used to be this.
I guess those days it was very posh.
-[in Hindi] To bake something.
-[Neetu] Right.
[in English] And what Neetu aunty
has done to me in my pregnancy
when I was eating the bake dish.
-[Neetu] What did I do?
-You did that. I was eating so much.
And you were like,
[in Hindi] "Eating too much."
[in English] I said,
"But I'm pregnant. I'm allowed to eat."
You were like, "Don't eat all this."
-Everybody.
-[Ranbir raps table]
-[Neetu] Everyone!
-Why don't we ask the whole table
to mention one core memory
of a dish that they had in Chembur?
-We'll start with Kanchan aunty.
-Yeah, of course.
The most famous thing that I remember
is that silver bowl of ghee
which used to be there
in the middle of the table,
accompaniment to anything
and made it perfect.
You know, like, dal-chawal and ghee.
Or sabzi and ghee.
-That silver thing.
-Silver bowl.
-With that bent spoon. [chuckles]
-Yeah.
Dadi ji's secret.
Papa, please.
They'd make a roast chicken.
[partially in Hindi] Raj uncle used
to make that crab masala.
[in English] So my favorite was
this khichdi which Mom used to make.
And, uh, this very soft
overcooked cauliflower.
For me as a child, I only grew up
eating paya and kadak pav.
It was I was just
-Brun Pav.
-[Kareena] ...obsessed. Yeah, Brun Pav.
-It was so crunchy, it made that sound.
-Yeah.
Lolo, you?
Guys, for me, I think it's paya,
baked crab and junglee mutton.
-There used to...
-And the dash of tabasco
in that lovely shell of Dadi ji's.
-And little forks. Little tiny forks.
-Favorites.
-The slim ones.
-Remember, there was a boy.
Was he Dadi ji's help
or Chintu uncle's? Chandrapal?
-Chandrapal!
-Dadi's. Dadi's.
He's here serving the baked crab.
No, that's Manoj uncle's, uh
[in Hindi] Chandrapal died long ago.
-No. He's here.
-[in English] You saw a ghost.
That's Vishal, man.
Oh my god, he looks the same there.
And Mistry ji.
-Mistry was
-Mistry ji was the king.
-Dadi taught him.
-[Kareena] Of course.
I heard there was a separate
naan maker and a separate
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yeah, he used to come with those
-Choolahs. To make.
-What was the naan maker lady's name?
-Tari. Tari. Tari.
-[Ranbir] Tari.
Chimpu, Karan and I
would go there and stand there.
[in Hindi] "Piping hot naans!"
[in English] We used to stand there
waiting for our turn for it.
Each time I went over, I was like,
"Dadi, have you made Chinese aloo?"
-[Kunal] What is Chinese aloo?
-What's Chinese aloo?
-[Bharat] It's a healthy option.
-So, uh, not Chinese.
-No, it was Chinese. Shut up!
-Not Chinese.
-You didn't have anything else. Only that.
-You only ate three aloo.
-Three aloo.
-Nobody remembers except you.
No, no, no, listen, listen.
My first memory of
having machhi curry and rice is
sitting with Nani,
pressing her feet and watching KBC.
We watched it
every single night at nine o'clock.
And she'd give us ten rupees
for every answer.
We'd only make 30 rupees
because we were that dumb.
But we would have machhi curry with ghee.
No, Armaan used to put ghee
and look at us and, like, laugh evilly.
-[all laughing]
-[upbeat music playing]
[music fades]
[Karisma] Oh, my God.
Wow, look at this.
It is good.
Armaan, this is very fancy.
-Very fancy.
-The plating.
-What is this?
-The fish curry has it's a ghee dripper.
-[Navya] Oh, my God.
-[all gushing] Ooh! Woah!
-[Armaan] It's a ghee dripper.
-[Navya] I love it.
[Kanchan] Armaan, yummy.
-[Armaan] It's good.
-Cheers.
-Cheers! I'll put ghee for you?
-Okay.
-Want ghee?
-Put ghee.
[woman] Superb.
[Saif] Wow, that's really nice.
The machhi curry
with the ghee on top, you know,
he insisted on everybody putting that,
which I thought was a cute touch
because Dadi ji also
used to force everybody,
[in Hindi] "Put some ghee on it."
[in English] Sitting in
my grandmother's room, which was large,
a lot of people could fit in there.
And then the feeding used to start,
you know, and that was a two-hour process.
And the way she used to
feed people, you know.
[in Hindi] "Take the rice, mash it,
put ghee on it and then eat it."
[in English] You know,
she used to make it so tasty.
She's like, "It's very good for your body.
It's very good for this."
And I used to see
Neetu collapsing over there
because she would say,
"Ghee? Are you crazy?"
She would bring her own tiffin
and come and
This fish is surmai.
-Neetu aunty, you won't have the ghee, no?
-[Neetu] I had, I put. Hmm.
[guests chuckling]
This is my favorite for sure.
The fish curry rice Nani's is
And I think cooking for somebody
is such a selfless art.
You know, like, you really have to have
the ability to serve somebody, you know,
and to make them happy.
["Home is where you belong" playing]
These are my nani's recipes.
Wherever it's tagged are all the recipes.
The other pages are all phone numbers.
[in Hindi] "Half kilo mutton."
"Quarter kilo breast. Yes."
"Twenty peppercorns."
"Pure ghee." [in English] Pure ghee.
-[slow guitar music playing]
-So in 2018, after Nani passed away,
my biggest insecurity was that
I would lose all these recipes.
I wouldn't be able to cook them,
I won't be able to eat them,
there'll be no one to make them.
[in Hindi] Wow, now it will be tasty.
The taste will come through
with butter and cream.
[in English] It's special he's doing that,
adding his own touch of love, of family,
of ghee and tadka to it
and giving it to us.
And I think that that's how
traditions are passed down.
Let's see how it's gonna turn out to be.
[Armaan] So while I was deciding
the menu for the family lunch,
Karisma called and said
she wanted to meet me.
She had some kind of surprise for me,
so I went across and met her.
[vehicle horns hooting in the distance]
-[Karisma] Hi.
-[Armaan] Hi, Lolz!
Let's sit here.
[Karisma] I have something
very special to show you.
[Armaan] Okay.
This is a cookbook that Dada ji gave me.
Just see.
[Armaan] How long back was this?
This was, see, June 1985.
[Armaan] "To Lolo."
"My darling, a woman's way
to a man's heart is through his stomach."
"I want you to try all these recipes
on your grandfather before you meet him."
[Karisma] Yeah.
-Just see. [chuckles]
-[Armaan] Wow!
[Karisma] They are actually
all the things that he likes.
[Armaan] "Fried peanuts, cheese balls."
I think this is going to be on the menu.
We need a lot of fried food that day.
[Karisma] With this, I found this picture.
See, this is his handwriting again.
Please look at my stomach.
I was a foodie from that time only.
-[Karisma chuckles]
-You're a full Kapoor in this.
-Such a cute picture.
-[Karisma] Full on, right?
[Armaan] He loved you.
He loved all of y'all.
I wish I could meet him.
-[Karisma] I know. I know.
-[wistful music playing]
I'm actually jealous
of every single member
who got to spend time with him.
And whatever little connection
that I do have with him,
I've always felt since I was very young,
'cause I've heard so much from my mum,
I've always felt that
he's always been around.
And that connection
was always built for me through Nani,
through my other family members,
and at the bungalow.
Armaan has created
a kind of a museum at his own place
of things which he took
from Deonar cottage when it was sold.
So he really respects that.
He really, um, understands that value.
He's like an old soul who really wants
to actually go back into the past and,
you know, keep his family legacy going.
[Rima] You know, my sons
never got to meet their grandfather.
So, when they were small, and they
used to trouble me eating their food,
I used to show them
the circus part of Mera Naam Joker.
So they actually thought,
for quite some time,
that my father was a joker.
Armaan had a party where I had to recreate
the same joker.
Identical.
And when he walked in,
my son was, like, astounded.
He was like
[in Hindi] Live here
[in English] He thought
his grandfather had walked in.
[in Hindi] where else to go but here?
Call me whenever you like
I am where I always was
Our Heaven and Earth
Both are right here
Where else can you go?
-[guests chatting indistinctly]
-[guests laughing]
Only one person is not saying anything
and sitting like this.
-[Neetu] Who's that?
-Lolo.
I have made some [chuckles]
[Kareena] Just the right amount.
-[Neetu, in Hindi] Correct.
-[Kareena, in English] Yeah.
[Rima] Surprise!
[all cheering and hooting]
[all cheering and applauding]
-[Rima] I had to.
-[all cheering]
-[Riddhima] Oh, my God!
-I had to come. I had to come.
Wow!
[lively music playing]
Boom, she shows up.
And I saw the switch in the electricity
of the atmosphere.
She brings the energy.
She brings the stories.
She brings the candidness
to the conversation, if you might say.
I didn't change.
I'm sorry. I'm badly dressed.
-I knew that you were coming.
-[Riddhima] I want to hug you because
She just brought that.
It was like a [imitates whoosh]
Like, that big energy bam that we needed.
She kind of had
that star entry moment, you know,
in the interval point
of a film. [chuckles]
-Bhoks!
-Come and sit. Come and sit.
[Kareena] Sit, sit, sit.
Because we all were genuinely bummed.
Couldn't have this without her.
She's a big part of this family.
It was really heartwarming and really
brought a smile to everybody's face
that she made it.
Oh, look at the mogras.
-Your favorite.
-Woah! Woah! Woah! Woah!
[Neetu] It was a pleasant shock.
Beautiful shock.
I felt happy that she saw
what her son has done.
I tried plating food and all of that.
It went right and wrong.
[upbeat, peppy music playing]
[guests chatting indistinctly]
[music fades]
Initially, he was plating the food
and bringing it out, then,
he was like, "You know what?
This is not us at all."
Because we're not used to
just being given that.
[in Hindi] "This is all
we're going to eat."
"Just one fish. And one of this."
[in English] Then,
we're just like, "No, no, no."
-[Rima] Pass the food. Nobody's passing.
-Ranbir.
-[Riddhima] Take it.
-Pav!
-[Riddhima] Keep it.
-[women chuckling]
[Rima] I don't want the Brun.
[Kareena] Eventually, he was like,
"I'm just going to bring out the dishes."
"And let's just not try
and be 'posh'." [chuckles]
Do you know your grandfather
used to love his dal?
[Ranbir] Dal.
-[grunts]
-Slowly.
Oh, sorry.
You want the dal?
Kapoors eat food like this. [chuckles]
They don't even use a spoon.
[in Hindi] They serve rice with hands,
take chicken with their hands.
[in English] And like, when that happens,
sometimes, Saif and all are like,
"What is happening?
Why is Lolo using her hand?"
Saifu, take some aloo.
[Aadar] All right, guys, guys!
Can I have everyone's attention, please?
-Hello.
-[all] Yay!
[Riddhima] Aadar in the house.
Aadar in the house.
When Armaan first told me that I have
to say something today, give a speech,
I said, "No one does this in our family."
But then, I thought
that being the youngest
in our loud, big, fat Punjabi family
-[chuckles]
-I never really got a chance to speak.
So I observed.
[chuckles] And today, I'm gonna
talk to you about my observations.
-[all] Oh, no!
-[chuckling]
Aadar, I'm not talking to you
if you say anything about me.
They say, some family trees
produce a huge crop of nuts.
-I think they meant our family.
-[Kareena] Yeah!
[all chuckling]
Because everyone's nuts.
[Kareena] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
-[Aadar] Everyone's loud.
-Agreed.
Everyone's proud, funny.
And we're obsessed,
clearly, with our food.
Even right now, while meeting each other,
we don't say, "Hi, hello."
We say, [in Hindi] "What's for dinner?"
[in English] But the real question is,
[in Hindi] what is it in our food,
[in English] that we all look
and sound alike?
Armaan looks like Chintu uncle.
Lolo looks like Mom.
And I look like Ranbir.
-How do you look like me?
-We both look like you.
More than I look like her.
How did that come? How did that happen?
Sometimes I think we look
more like brothers than me and Armaan.
[Riddhima, Kareena] Yeah.
In fact, sometimes I think
Saif also looks like Chintu mama.
[all chuckling]
And speaking of brotherhood,
Ranbir bhaiya once said
that I don't call him Bhaiya.
But how can I not?
After all, he's taught me so much in life.
He taught me the most
colorful language in the world
and made me repeat them
to all his friends.
I even performed for them.
And he never told anyone.
No one except Armaan.
[Kareena chuckles]
Or Riddhima.
Or Mom, Kunal mama, Saif,
Lolo, Bebo, Riddhima,
Bharat bhaiya, Daboo mama,
Kanchan aunty, Bunty maasi,
Neila aunty, Chintu mama, Neetu aunty,
the whole world. But that's it.
-He's the best secret keeper.
-I won't tell anybody else. [chuckles]
So thank you, Bhaiya,
for educating me all these years.
[woman 2] Ranbir can't keep anything
in his stomach.
[all cheering and applauding]
Speaking about education,
thank you, Saif,
for raising the IQ on the table.
-Oh, wow! Yay!
-[all cheering and applauding]
But speaking of being smart,
and the healthiest is Neetu mami,
who carries her
healthy dabbas wherever she goes.
Even at Christmas brunch, when there's
turkey, ham, pudding, she'll still have
her bowl of quinoa, one lettuce,
three flax seeds, half a carrot.
[all chuckling]
And the Santa Claus of our family
is our sweet, innocent Tashu.
-[woman 1] Woah!
-[Rima] Oh, Wow!
-Tash!
-Woah!
Who not only spoils us with her gifts,
but also sometimes
her unintentional comedy.
[all chuckling]
Recently, a cousin of mine
got into Harvard.
Obviously, a very proud moment
for any family.
Here comes Tashu.
"Wow, Harrods! Congratulations!"
-[all chuckling]
-No!
[laughing]
Riddhima!
[all chuckling]
Congratulations on being the newest,
and also the oldest debutante
in our family.
[all laughing]
Bebo didi.
-[Kareena chuckles]
-Good looks, good looks, good looks.
Oh, enough about me.
[all chuckle]
Whenever Bebo didi meets you,
the first thing she'll say,
[in Hindi] "What's going on?"
[in English] "What's happening? What's up?
Come, come, come. Sit, sit, sit."
-"What's the goss?"
-[Neetu chuckling]
Total detective.
Mom, you said that Nana ji was
also the biggest detective in the family.
-You clearly got his genes.
-In his cottage, he got every news.
In Bebo's and Ranbir's homes,
they get to know everything.
But they never, they never talk about it.
-[sarcastically] Oh, sure!
-[all laughing]
We are like Google.
We have the information,
but unless you guys don't search for it,
you won't know.
-[Saif] Bravo.
-Yeah, good one, Ranbir.
And, Mom, the quintessential dramatic,
overprotective mummy,
who raised both me and Armaan
like babies for 30 years.
Oh, what rubbish! What rubbish!
She wouldn't sleep until we came home.
Didn't give us keys.
Guilt-trip us. "BP, BP, BP."
Call us every 20 minutes.
-What rubbish!
-"What are you doing? Where are you?"
"Please come home. I'm getting BP."
[chuckles]
But all jokes aside, she's
the most caring mother in the world.
-The most loving mother in the world.
-Yay!
And not just to me,
but I feel like to everyone.
And last but not the least, Armaan.
[laughing]
-[Armaan] Why me, man?
-[Aadar] Cool.
Calm, collected.
-Words I will never use to describe you.
-[chuckles]
Because leading up to this lunch,
you've driven everyone crazy.
But that just shows
that all his hyperactive aunty behavior
means that how much he really cares.
And how much he wanted today
to be the perfect celebration
for all of us.
-[Rima] Proud of you, son.
-Hear! Hear!
Hear! Hear! Your grandfather
would've been proud of you.
Shut your ears.
I love you, Armaan.
-[all] Aww!
-[all chuckling]
[Riddhima] That's so sweet.
Thank you for organizing all this.
Thank you everyone for being here.
Thank you for this lovely
Was it a toast or a roast on me?
-I thought your words were very kind.
-Yeah, it's not very roasty.
I roasted him for 30 years of my life.
Now how much more?
But last but not the least,
I just wanna say,
as a family, I know we don't get
to meet as much as we'd like.
But when we do get together
for occasions like these,
it just reminds us that
families are like branches of a tree.
-[Riddhima] Absolutely.
-We may grow in different directions,
but the roots will remain the same.
-Hear! Hear!
-Wow!
[all applauding]
-Well said, Aadar.
-[Aadar] Thank you.
-[Saif] Well-spoken, man.
-[man 1] Great speech.
May I say something?
-No.
-Yeah!
-Yes.
-[Riddhima chuckles]
You know what I was feeling that I just...
[Aadar] Stand. Mom, stand.
No, I'm not standing.
I'm Prithviraj Kapoor's granddaughter.
He was a stage artist.
He said, "Throw your voice
from the stomach. Hear me all."
-So
-[pensive music playing]
I was last in the house because
Daboo married and went.
Chintu married and went.
Ritu had gone long before.
Chimpu was in and out of Pune.
Sometimes he was shooting or whatever.
And I didn't get married
for very long. [chuckles]
And my dad was an owl like I am.
He wanted company in the night.
[in Hindi] Whoever visited,
and if nobody,
he would talk to his masseur.
[in English] But he wants somebody.
And nobody understood him
post a certain hour in the night.
So they would say,
[in Hindi] "The lion is waiting,
don't go into his room now."
I used to go into his room right then,
pick a fight and leave.
I used to always tell him,
[in English] "I'll never leave you."
[in Hindi] He'd say,
"No, you'll get married."
"And if I'm alive at your wedding"
I'd even fight with him over it
many a times.
"What is this nonsense?"
"What do you mean by saying,
'if I'm alive'?"
He would say, "If I'm alive"
Then I'll give you a wedding
"with stars shining everywhere."
-"Such a wedding."
-[music intensifies]
But then he left.
[music fades]
-Good morning, everybody.
-Good morning. Good morning.
Good morning, everybody.
[Neetu] What I really loved
about that family
was their relationship with each other.
She's shouting, "Put the TV on.
[in Hindi] Rima, don't do it."
And I'm searching for the remote.
[in English] If Randhir Kapoor
and Rishi Kapoor are there,
that was the best entertainment.
Because the way they spoke
and they argued with each other
was entertainment.
You didn't need anything else.
My two sisters
My two sisters
Crushing and sitting with each other.
Fighting, pushing.
[all laughing and shouting]
You might say, "Hello, hello."
-[in Hindi] On this day, I...
-[indistinct shouting]
[Neetu, in English] They all fought.
They all loved each other.
I really feel joint families
are so much fun.
[lively song playing]
[Armaan] All the brothers and sisters,
they would always line up in age order.
So, like, Randhir,
Ritu, Rishi, Rima, Rajiv,
they'd hold each other's hands like this
and they'd pose
for a picture at every party.
That was like their standard thing
when they were together.
[music fades]
[Rima, in Hindi] Where
have those days gone? [sniffles and sobs]
[melancholic music playing]
[sniffles]
Everyone's gone.
[in English] Papa went first.
-Then my mother went.
-[melancholic music plays]
Then my older sister went, Ritu.
Then, Chintu.
And then, Chimpu, the youngest.
[melancholic music continues]
We were all feeling,
[in Hindi] "What's happening?"
[in English] It was
it was just unbelievable.
How can so many people go
in a span of two years?
[Kareena] I think
somewhere in my father's heart,
he still feels like Chimpu uncle
and Chintu uncle are there with him.
I don't think he'll ever accept
the fact that they're not there.
[music fades]
["Jaane Kaha Gaye Woh Din" playing
on piano]
[in Hindi] Raj Kapoor would always say,
[in English] "If you're born
in this world",
if you've come to life,
live in such a way
that something you do,
people, when you die,
"can remember you by."
[in Hindi] So people would say,
"He was a good person."
"He achieved something in life."
[continues playing "Jaane Kaha
Gaye Woh Din" on piano]
-[Riddhima] Wow!
-[Neetu] Amazing!
Superb!
-[Kareena] Yay!
-[Neetu] Fabulous! Fabulous!
So good! Amazing!
[Rima] He loved this song!
-[Riddhima] Take a bow!
-[Neetu] Fabulous! Fabulous!
-[Riddhima] Take a bow!
-[guests applauding]
Papa, what's happening?
-Are you okay?
-Yeah, yeah, I'm alright.
Uh, so just to remind you that
we all here today are not just gathered
to eat this high cholesterol,
nostalgic food made by Armaan,
uh, but to celebrate a great man,
a great artist,
his better half,
and also life's three
most exquisite pleasures.
That's food,
films, and family.
[pensive music playing]
So let us raise our glasses to a toast,
to the movies that inspire us,
to the families that stand by us,
and to the meals that brings us together.
To the greatest showman, Mr. Raj Kapoor,
to the greatest host,
Krishna Kapoor.
We love you, we miss you.
[in Hindi] "We live here, we die here"
[all in chorus] "Where else can we go?"
-[Ranbir, in English] Cheers!
-[all] Cheers!
God bless you.
[Arman, in Hindi] Open the curtain.
Open!
-Careful, not too ahead.
-[guests clamoring]
-Woah!
-[Riddhima, in English] What's that?
[Armaan, in Hindi] Stop.
[Neetu, in English] What's that?
Thank you.
Armaan, what's this?
-It's a small surprise for everyone.
-Wow!
So, this is the last of it today.
And, uh I decided to make something
that we can all preserve and keep with us.
I mean, uh, it's something very small.
-Let's see.
-Come.
[Armaan] Daboo uncle,
do you want me to turn you?
[Manoj] No, no,
I'll get him. I'll get him.
-[Zahan] I don't know.
-Where's Saif?
-[Karisma] Wait.
-I'll help you.
-Come on, Armaan. Let's go.
-[Armaan] Are we ready?
[Saif] Armaan, pull it really fast.
Can you do this? [swishes]
Come on, Armaan!
-[Saif] One, two, three.
-You can do this!
[all] Oh!
[all] Oh! Wow!
No way.
Oh my God.
[Zahan] It's the bungalow.
[Zahan] This is the front.
-Oh, my God!
-House in Deonar.
-This angle, I've never seen that.
-[Kareena] I know. We are at the back.
-This chair.
-[Kareena] I see the entrance.
-This is the entrance.
-Yeah.
[Kareena] That's the entrance.
The gate.
-[Neetu] Gate.
-The way you come.
[Riddhima] Oh, my God.
See the water fountain.
[Kareena] The marble steps
with the wrought iron.
[women] Oh!
[Ranbir] The white tiles used to be
really hot because of the sun.
This is my mother's room.
[Ranbir] I'll turn it.
-[Rima] I'll tell you where my room is.
-[Aadar] Where was your room, Mom?
[Riddhima] Oh my God, the swing!
-[Rima] This is where he sat.
-[Saif] The terrace on top.
Daboo, Chintu, Chimpu, Ranbir.
-[Saif] The room on top?
-[Aadar] Your room?
-On the other side.
-Talking about this?
Yeah, yeah. No, here.
-This is Dadi's room.
-[Ranbir] That's a balcony.
Remember attic?
They used to dry clothes there.
-Dry clothes.
-[Rima] This was my room.
So, guys, this opens up.
This opens up,
and you can see certain areas.
-[Ranbir] Oh!
-Oh my God.
-Downstairs.
-Oh my God.
[Karisma] This is amazing.
[Kareena] Staircase with that thing
is there, with the wrought iron.
-[Neetu] The carpet is also the same.
-[Karisma] The detailing is amazing.
[Neetu] The dining table.
-[Ranbir] All the kids used to play there.
-[Kareena] Outside.
[Neetu] Aah, the sofa.
[Kareena] We'll get into every den.
-[Neetu] The carpet.
-[Riddhima] Piano was here.
-[Ranbir] Here, here.
-[Neetu] Here.
-[Riddhima] That's amazing.
-[all applauding]
Well done, Armaan!
-[Riddhima] Well done, Armaan.
-[Neetu] So lovely.
[Riddhima] This was
a beautiful surprise for all of us.
[Anissa] Fabulous. Nostalgic.
So we've had such great memories
in this bungalow.
Nani hosted many parties.
We had some great times.
I hosted today.
-Who's next?
-[all chuckling]
-It takes a lot to plan.
-Who's next?
-[Anissa] Yes.
-[Ranbir] It does.
See, we've got Christmas at Kunal uncle's.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
-I don't mind taking Diwali.
-Normally, Diwali was done by Bebo.
-[Kareena] Yeah.
-Choti Diwali.
-Choti Diwali.
Then Ranbir can do Diwali.
I will do Holi.
No, but we should keep planning
things together.
Like Mom keeps saying,
we should keep taking responsibility
in this generation
and the next generation.
-[Rima] And generations to come.
-[Aadar] A lot of responsibility.
A lot of responsibility
for the next generation.
[Aadar] The oldest of the next generation.
Yeah, the eldest of the next generation
to take our legacy forward.
-Listen, can I also just say one thing?
-[Armaan] Yes.
Which is, you know, I want to thank
all of you for always making me a part
and welcome in your lovely, lovely family.
Sometimes we feel
the whole world is falling apart,
but you are a lovely family
and you're so warm and close together.
It's really a wonderful thing to see.
And thank you for always sharing that.
And God bless you all
and [air kisses] lots of love.
-Well done, you guys. Thank you.
-[Kareena] Thank you.
Thank you.
[wistful music playing]
[in Hindi] "Tomorrow"
I may not be
In this world,
The stars will always glitter in the sky.
You will forget
They will forget
"But I will always remain with you"
Thank you.
Thank everybody and all of you.
["Jeena Yaha Marna Yaha" playing]
[audience applauding]
[Ranbir] Hi, guys. Hi.
[man 2, in Hindi] Stay
in the center of frame.
[woman 1] I'll raise the chair.
-Is it fully raised? It is.
-[man 3] Yes.
[man 4, in English] Guys, silence please.
We're shooting. Rolling sound.
[man 5] Silence! Silence!
-[man 6] Sound's rolling.
-[upbeat music plays]
You won't keep so much, right?
[in Hindi] Only some bits?
[in English] The full show's
not on me, no?
[in Hindi] Once I open my mouth,
I can't stop.
[in English] How do I answer?
I can't say I'm a warm person myself.
Keep the vegetarians on one end.
Keep Rima on the other end.
[in Hindi] Edit it to make me look
as thin as possible. [chuckles]
[chortling]
[in English] Of course, I can see you.
Can you see me? [laughs]
After 30 years now,
I know my face a little bit. [chortles]
[laughing]
[man 7] Ranbir Kapoor interview.
Shot one, take... [groans and chuckles]
Agastya
-Agastya.
-[man 7] Agas
Give it to me. Give it to me.
This is quite intimidating. [chuckles]
Hi, this is Kareena Kapoor Khan.
And quite prominently
in the Kapoor family tree.
Pretty high up on the branch.
So, we're playing a game called
[in Hindi] "Guess the Kapoor?"
[in English] Hey, I'm not going to answer
all these. There are mean ones also.
"Which Kapoor googles their own name?"
Uh, is that a question?
[in Hindi] Everyone
must be doing it in secret.
[in English] They love to know
what people are talking about.
-I would say Lolo.
-What?!
"Which Kapoor is the biggest gossip?"
Bebo.
Oh, and Ranbir, for sure.
-Ranbir.
-Ranbir.
-Kareena.
-Not at all.
Kapoor family doesn't gossip.
[chuckles]
Kareena and Ranbir.
Kareena and me, right?
They would've said our names,
but that's not true.
"Which Kapoor tips off the paparazzi?"
"Or is the friendliest?"
All the Kapoors love the paparazzi.
Definitely not me.
[in Hindi] Who? I don't know.
I am from Delhi. [laughs]
Armaan.
Hmm
[in English] "The friendliest?" My mother.
I know who has diabetes and who has
high blood pressure and things like that.
I don't think we need
to tip off the paparazzi.
In fact, we tip them
to not click us, please. [chuckles]
We don't want to be clicked.
-[music slows down]
-[vehicle horn blaring]
[people clamoring]
[man 1, in Hindi] That'll do.
Don't go any closer!
[man 2] Enough. Enough.
-[reporters clamoring]
-[peppy accordion music playing]
[man 3] Shara ji, please wait.
[in English] Yes, yes, thank you.
[man 2, in Hindi] Look at the center.
-[man 3, in English] Look center.
-[man 4, in Hindi] How's everyone?
[in English] Thank you. Thank you.
[man 5, in Hindi] Here.
[man 6, in English] Center.
-[man 3] Both look center.
-[in Hindi] Ma'am, this way. More light.
Today is 100th Birthday.
-[man 7, in English] Yes.
-We're celebrating that.
-Big day.
-[man 7] Yes. Big Day.
-Yes, is the light good?
-[man 8, in Hindi] Ma'am, here.
Why do you need lights?
-You're evergreen.
-Ever...
[reporters chuckling]
-Hello!
-[chorus] Hello!
-[woman 1] Welcome, welcome, welcome.
-How are you?
-Aadar saunters in.
-[Navya] Thank you.
-Wow, this is really nice.
-[Navya] Hello!
You're looking cool, Shaira.
I don't know, I'm just
You've worn blue?
-Hello!
-[Neela] Hello ji!
[Nitasha] It's been so long
since we've met. So long. How are you?
-So colorful and nice.
-[Neetu] Thank you!
-We are quite matching.
-I know, I was gonna say that...
[chuckles] You're just one shade darker.
-[Aadar] Hi.
-Hi, Aadar.
-[Aadar] How are you doing?
-I'm good.
[excitedly] Hi Raha!
Poi-poi. Poi-poi
Say "Boo".
-[air kisses] Hi!
-And this is Aunt? Grandmom?
-[in Hindi] Grandmom.
-Aunt Grandmom.
-[in English] Hi, Raha!
-Poi-poi, she can call her.
-[reporters clamoring] Hi!
-Hello, hello, hi, hi
-[camera shutters clicking]
-[reporters clamoring indistinctly]
-[woman 1] Hello!
-Hello.
-How are you?
-[woman 1] I'm good.
[Kunal] Hi, how are you?
-How are you doing?
-Yeah. [chuckles]
-[both] Hi.
-How are you?
Good.
-[man 1] Royal couple of Bollywood.
-[Hindi] Who are the Royal Couple?
[reporters] You, sir! You are!
-Do you call everyone that?
-[man 2] No. You exclusively.
-You tell everyone.
-Everyone's favorite.
-[man 3] No, no.
-[in English] Thank you.
-Hi! Hi!
-Hello! Hi!
-[woman 2] Hello! And welcome!
-[woman 3] You look so pretty.
-What's happening, guys?
-It's quite...
[indistinct greetings]
-[in Hindi] What's going on?
-Not much.
-[in English] It's a little strange.
-Yeah.
It's kind of real.
-Hello.
-[Saif] It's kind of real. But
-[Aadar] Hi, Bebo didi. What's happening?
-All of you are sitting and waiting for us
like I don't know what.
-Namaste. How are you?
-[Randhir] Namaste, I'm well.
From within, inside,
it's like any normal family.
[snorts and chuckles] It's
The entire Kapoor family
is a dramatic family.
They're so, you know, all over the place.
Everybody likes to talk
to each other at the same time. [snorts]
-You are the one who is dramatic.
-[Kareena] I'm not.
-Moi?
-[Neetu] Total drama.
-Dramatic.
-[woman 2] That's why you came in.
[Kareena] Why is he here?
-[Neetu] What's he saying?
-I can't hang with Ranbir.
-[Neetu, in Hindi] What did you say?
-[in English] Are you recording this?
[guests laughing]
-All the way up.
-I was not. This story...
-[Ranbir] Once she opened the door
-Sorry, sorry. Cut.
-[laughs]
-Like a modern family. More of a senior
[Saif] It's really rare to have a family
with so many unique,
interesting characters that are also nice.
Liberal-minded,
kind of very cool people.
[upbeat music continues]
Funny, loving, united.
I would use these words
to describe my family.
[in Hindi] They're very fond of eating.
Bombil!
Bombil. [in English] Bombay duck.
-[Neetu] He used to have Bombay duck.
-[sucks tongue] Fried.
[in Hindi] They love to laugh.
-[laughs]
-[Kareena] And they love being together.
[in English] So we are people
who are [in Hindi] passionate.
[in English] But for each other
and in each other's company.
-Even you eat a lot.
-But you saw me
-Yeah.
-Neetu aunty, when I was
-She was pregs.
-pregnant and you were firing me.
"Don't eat so much."
I said, "But I'm pregnant."
She's like, "So what?"
[all laughing]
-She cooked butter chicken for me.
-[woman 2] Yeah, I cooked for all of you.
None of you have ever taken me out
for dinner. I'm still waiting.
-Didn't have money. Now we can.
-[Pooja, in Hindi] Old excuse.
Now you all have money, right?
I mean, I'm okay also if he doesn't
because the food is coming. So. [chuckles]
[Agastya] And they love
talking about food a lot.
Some sentence, some food will come up.
You're like, "We're talking something
else. Why are you talking about food?"
They don't say, "Hello, how are you?
What's happening?"
They come in to dinner and say,
"What's there for dinner tonight?"
That's the Kapoors for you. [chuckles]
[peppy music playing]
[Armaan] For me, the emotion
when it comes to food is just happiness.
Especially at tadkas,
you know, lots of ghee.
[onions sizzling in ghee]
Pound the garlic and throw it in.
Just that aroma is beautiful.
I love my fish curry, rice
Fried fish.
The macaroni and cheese.
[in Hindi] With ghee on top,
[in English] then you know
that this is a real Kapoor.
[in Hindi] When they eat like that,
you know that this is a real Kapoor kid.
[guests talking]
Outstanding.
But the beginning goes down to my dada,
Prithviraj Kapoor.
He actually is the original one
who started this whole family union.
Laughter, gaiety.
Oh my God, it was crazy.
And great food.
My grandmother used to have
a lovely spread always.
And Raj Kapoor, my father.
He obviously then
kept the tradition going.
[lively saxophone and piano music playing]
[in Hindi] If someone is eating
at the table with Raj saab,
[in English] that was a big thing,
because then he's listening to you.
Because his stories always began
also over a meal.
[in Hindi] "Bring out the food"
was his thing.
[in English] And he would listen.
And lunch was not like "lunch".
It was like lunch.
If there were even three people
coming for a meal,
there would be like 30 dishes
on the table.
And everybody would be like, "But why?"
So, this lunch is, is a special one.
It's, uh, Raj Kapoor's 100th birthday.
[Karisma] And I think
it's a perfect celebration.
And Armaan has planned
some fantastic food.
[in Hindi] Food is just an excuse.
There can't be a better excuse.
[in English] Hundred years of Raj Kapoor.
I think our grandfather
seeded in us this passion,
which is the common thread
between each and every Kapoor,
which is their love for food.
[music intensifies and fades]
[lively song playing over stereo]
[Rima] I wish, you know, Armaan,
I was just thinking,
Papa's birthday is coming up, 100th year.
And we have to do something.
-I wish the house was there.
-Yeah.
I mean, I can't even imagine
to tell you what all days
we've seen in that home.
And especially his birthdays, my God.
Because he he loved his birthdays.
And he would feel
it's the national holiday.
-So it's like, national holiday.
-[chuckles]
[in Hindi] It's
Raj Kapoor's birthday, man.
[in English] So then,
all of us have not gone to school.
We are enjoying.
[lively music playing]
[Rima] And I was always the most excited
because I used to be
always in the front, with Papa.
And when the cake cutting was there,
stand right next to him
when he's cutting the cake
with his father and mummy,
and then Papa and I would have a dance.
And
Oh, memories!
[lively music continues]
Raj Kapoor is not just Raj Kapoor,
Papa, Dada, Nana.
Raj Kapoor is everybody's.
-[sneezes]
-[man] God bless you.
Somebody is remembering me.
To someone who doesn't know
who Raj Kapoor is, I would say
that he is perhaps the most influential
film director, producer
and actor in Indian cinema.
The 1950s was his decade.
The kind of influences
from people like Charlie Chaplin,
the beauty of the black and white
movies that he shot,
the camera work, the music
[music tempo increases]
and the romanticism he brought
to Indian cinema was path breaking.
You watch those films today,
and, and they stand
the test of time as true classics.
[in Hindi] My shoes are Japanese
These pants are English
The red hat I wear is Russian
But my heart is Indian
My shoes are Japanese...
[in English] His movies
are played all around the world.
There's a sort of emotional connect
that his films have
that just resonates with people.
I mean, when Awara released in Moscow,
it played for almost two years.
And when Nana ji would visit Russia,
the crowds would just go crazy.
[people cheering]
[in Hindi] No one loves me
I'm the darling of the desolate town
And the barren street
I'm a free-spirit
I'm a free-spirit
I'm a wandering star in the sky
I'm a free-spirit
[in English] So many people till today
come up to me and say,
"I was Raj saab's assistant."
A lot of people,
and they're producers today.
And he was like,
"I'm what I am because of Mr. Raj."
Everyone is in this business
because of the man himself.
Because he was the ultimate,
ultimate showman.
[sweeping music playing]
I am basically [chuckles]
an ordinary man.
I am nothing
too big or great.
I don't claim I have
any academic qualifications,
except that I have been quite aware
of what is around me,
and hence got to know
a little bit of human philosophy.
And that is probably what has
given birth to the clown in me.
And that clown,
even at the cost of my tears,
tries to make somebody happy.
[guests laughing]
[Nitasha] You all know how time flies.
-There aren't those kind of films made.
-But the style I've seen Dada ji
-Prithviraj Kapoor was very tall.
-He looked tall.
Ask the group over there.
-[Neetu] Kunal, how tall was Dada ji?
-Dada ji?
[Kunal] I think he was about 6'-6'1".
-Yeah, so same as Nana ji.
-Yeah.
He was taller than Shammi uncle.
-No, Papa was six and half an inch.
-No, no, no.
-Bebo, you're a normal height.
-Yeah.
-What's your height?
-[Kareena] 5'5".
[Neetu] I'm 5'6", so let's see.
Take out your shoes.
[in Hindi] Let's corner her today.
-[Kareena, in English] You're taller.
-[man 1] Same, same.
-What? I'm 5'6".
-No, see? [in Hindi] From the shoulder.
-[in English] You are taller, Mom.
-Yeah, she is taller.
-So you are 5'5 ", Neetu aunty is 5'6".
-She's half an inch.
[Navya] I don't think it's common to see
five generations in a room together.
And I'm really glad
that we got that opportunity
from so many of the elders
in this family for as long as we did.
-She's my cousin.
-[Navya and Anissa chuckle]
-Don't say it.
-She's our niece, stupid.
She is my cousin.
[Riddhima] She's our niece.
-[in Hindi] You are my cousin.
-[Navya, in English] No!
-You call me Bua?
-Yeah.
Oh, dear God.
I've always called you "Riddhima bua".
-You said Bua?
-Yeah.
That wouldn't be
a very smart answer from you.
We've grown up with Armaan, Aadar
and Ranbir from this family tree.
But I have Zahan, I have
I forget, there's so many of us
that it's really hard to keep track.
But there are
lots of uncles in the family.
But we're all so close in age
that I call them my cousins. [chuckles]
-[food sizzling]
-[music fades]
[Armaan] I am also one of those
many uncles in this large Kapoor family.
[in Hindi] Is the chutney ready?
[food sizzling]
[in English] I'm Armaan Jain,
Raj Kapoor's grandson.
I, uh, tried to follow in the footsteps
of my grandfather.
Tried to become an actor,
but it didn't work out.
So I followed my dream,
I followed my passion.
I started a delivery kitchen
called the Junglee Kitchen,
which is basically my family recipes
over the last 100 years put together.
[upbeat music playing]
And I'm hosting this lunch
to celebrate those 100 years.
[Armaan] Guys.
-[all cheering] Whoa!
-[Armaan] Sorry.
-What is happening?
-[man 1] Oh, you're here.
-Chef Ali Khan.
-[guests laughing]
Guys, good, good.
Thank you for being here.
-[Ranbir] Man of the moment.
-Thank you.
[Armaan] But before we go any further,
let me explain to you
this massively complicated
Kapoor family tree.
[Saif] He's my favorite.
[music fades]
Prithviraj Kapoor, my great-grandfather.
He married Ramsarni Kapoor.
They had four children.
Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor,
Urmila Kapoor Sial, and Shashi Kapoor.
So let me take just the Raj Kapoor family.
Raj Kapoor, my grandfather,
married Krishna Kapoor.
They had five children.
Randhir Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, Rishi Kapoor,
Rima Jain, and Rajiv Kapoor.
Randhir married Babita.
Their two daughters, Karisma and Kareena.
Karisma's two children,
Samairah and Kiaan.
Kareena married Saif.
Their boys, Taimur and Jehangir.
Ritu married Rajan.
Their two children, Nitasha and Nikhil.
Nikhil married Shweta.
Their two kids, Navya and Agastya.
Rishi married Neetu.
Their children, Riddhima and Ranbir.
Riddhima married Bharat.
Their daughter, Samara.
Ranbir married Alia.
And their daughter, Raha.
Rima, my mum, married my dad, Manoj.
Their two children,
Armaan, that's me, and Aadar.
Aadar married Alekha, I married Anissa.
And our son, Rana.
[chuckles] And that's pretty much
our very small family.
-[guests chatting loudly]
-That's the problem, no speech, but, uh
[guests shushing]
Okay, I, I, uh
Can you increase the volume?
-My voice? [chuckles]
-[Randhir] Increase the volume.
All your life, you've told his mother
to decrease her volume.
-You're telling him
-That's
-[guests laughing]
-[Kareena chuckling] Yeah.
To get the Kapoor family's date
to reach at this one location
is always a challenge.
Everyone wants to be there,
but their schedules are so busy
that there's always
one or two people missing.
-We knew you'll steal the limelight.
-[Nitasha and Karisma] Just come!
[Armaan] Even for today's lunch,
so many couldn't make it.
Alia, my cousin Nikhil,
Agastya,
and even the person who helped me
organize this in the first place,
my mum, who wasn't feeling too well.
-[Kareena] Come fast!
-Hi! Hi!
Oh, I feel like crying!
-Okay, then get up and come.
-No crying.
But I'm so happy,
I'm so happy, everyone's there and
-But just come.
-Come, come for a bit.
Daboo, you should be on that swing.
Rima aunty fell sick
and we were all really upset
and it was like no lunch or no fish curry
would taste the same without Rima aunty.
The pay as won't taste the same
if Rima aunty is not on the table.
We like to have that,
that bonding and that energy with her.
Randhir, I'm wearing your favorite outfit.
I've seen you 500 times in this shirt.
[all laughing]
If you change your shirt, you can come.
[all laughing]
Why can I not come?
[Armaan] My mum really wanted
to have this lunch at Deonar Cottage,
which was my grandfather
Raj Kapoor's home.
[upbeat music continues]
[Armaan] But since it's been sold,
I decided to recreate some of the magic
from that home.
[slow violin music plays]
Cutie! [chuckles]
[Kareena] Leave it on.
Leave it on.
[camera shutter clicks]
[Riddhima] Take it out. [chuckles]
-No? [chuckles]
-No. [chuckles]
[Ranbir] Armaan had created
the world of Deonar Cottage.
It reminded me of
exactly how the Sunday lunches were.
And I never thought
I would get to experience that again.
He had the swing, that famous swing.
My granddad used to sit on that swing.
There's such a cute video
of both of you and Papa.
-Hmm. Hmm.
-And he said,
[in Hindi] "Change your clothes".
-You said, "I'll wear it tomorrow."
-[all laughing]
[pensive music playing]
[Ranbir, in English] My name is
my grandfather's name.
His real name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor.
That's how he used to sign his checks.
And, uh, when I was born, I think
they were running out of names from "R".
So my
Granduncle, Mr. Shammi Kapoor,
told Raj Kapoor,
"Since you've not used this name,
let's give it to him."
So I got the name Ranbir from him.
[in Hindi] "The world calls me a joker."
[Raj Kapoor, in English]
"Such a time was born"
[in Hindi] Are you listening to me
or just singing away?
[in English] My grandfather,
he used to hide these caramel toffees
in his fridge inside his room.
[in Hindi] We had to stand in a queue.
He used to tell us
to salute him and we used to do it.
[in English] And then he says, "Give me
a kiss," and we used to kiss his cheek.
And then all of us
got that caramel toffee,
and that seemed
like a very big prize you know.
So each time we entered his room,
[in Hindi] we used to line up.
-Come! Come!
-Come! Come!
[Nitasha] There were
a lot of chickens in Chembur.
He'd always feed them
by calling out "ah-ah".
So, I told him, "If you call out 'ah-ah'
to me, I'll come to Mumbai from Delhi."
[in English] Actually,
you know, like, passing the studio
and then going to the bungalow was
such a tradition to look there
and see that banner outside.
And it was such a [inhales deeply]
I don't know, exciting
and amazing feeling, like a dream.
-[lively music playing]
-[birds chirping]
I got married and then I came
to this beautiful, beautiful home,
which was called Deonar Cottage.
[birds chirping]
Each member of the family
welcomed me, like,
like, they treated me like I was
like everything to them, you know.
And I also loved everybody,
not because they were my in-laws.
Because I really loved them.
[music fades]
That place has always been very special
to everybody, the entire family.
Sit on Sundays for hours, you know.
Reach there at 12.30 p.m.
and not leave till 7 p.m.
And all the cousins
and all the uncles and aunts,
they constantly had a smile on their face.
'Cause everybody looked forward
to that feeling more than anything.
You know, the feeling of joy,
feeling of family, feeling of love.
[pensive music continues]
[Rima] I can't believe this is going.
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-[Rima] Mango tree.
[birds chirping]
[Karisma] Chimpu uncle's room here.
-Come.
-[Armaan] And we came here one last time.
Our family home, a place that's
given us so many memories.
I'll, I'll really miss it.
But I'm happy I, I got my mum there.
Uh, I'm happy Daboo uncle,
who lived all his life there, was with us.
[Rima] This whole part was Papa's room.
-And my room was exactly on top.
-[Armaan chuckles]
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-And his door was here.
-And he knew everybody coming and going.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
[Rima] Sitting over there,
hiding his mangoes and his eggs.
[in Hindi] I was good friends with my dad,
but we also had our fights.
Sometimes, a very intense fight
would break out.
Then I would leave and go to my room,
slamming my door shut.
"I won't talk to you.
I have nothing to say!"
Then he'd write a note to me.
And send it through his staff
to my room upstairs.
Telling them to hand it over to me.
I used to read the note, and it would say,
"I'm here today,
but you will miss me
"when I'm not here anymore."
[pensive music playing]
[in English] Wow, look at Dada ji.
-[Armaan] Holi.
-[Karisma] So cool.
-Lolo, look at you and Dada.
-Oh my God. [chuckles]
-This is such an amazing picture.
-[music slows]
-Unbelievable memories.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
Daboo, remember when all the grandchildren
used to sit there, he used to tell us
[in Hindi] to put them to bed
or to play with them,
he'd say, "doll-doll doll-doll"
"doll-doll doll-doll"
[in English] Don't say it more.
-Daboo!
-[Karisma, Armaan chuckle]
-[upbeat music playing]
-One, two, three, four.
My grandfather's swing,
which he always used to sit on,
and everyone would come there
and greet him.
And then there would be a little chat
with each guest.
[lively music playing]
I'm telling everybody
"Please come, have food,"
and my mother was going
around the house, asking everybody
[in Hindi] what they would
like to eat and drink.
It would be such a huge party
that everyone in Mumbai wished that
[in English] "We are invited."
It used to be beautiful.
I mean she was such a gracious hostess.
She was like a, you know,
a maestro,
like in an orchestra.
And food and food and food
and, and the drinks and the snacks
and everything happening.
[upbeat music continues]
[in Hindi] Ranbir
and my bedtime was, what?
[in English] Eight o'clock. 8 p.m.
[in Hindi] We were kids.
[in English] We'd be
in my grandmother's room,
which had a window
which could look at the lawns.
And it was lot of fun
to kind of look at people.
[in Hindi] Who's come?
[in English] We didn't know
the names, who was who.
[in Hindi] But our didi, our house help,
she used to tell us,
"Well, so-and-so have come."
[in English] Those grand
Bollywood parties that everybody spoke.
But it was just different
because it was not just actors.
It was people who loved art
coming together.
[music fades]
[birds chirping]
[Rima] What are you feeling?
I feel lovely whenever I come here.
Feast your eyes, it's the last time.
Yeah.
I'll miss the place.
-[wistful music playing]
-[birds chirping]
And I wish whoever comes to live here
has a better life than he's having.
-Because we've had a very good life here.
-Yeah.
[wistful music continues]
[in Hindi] And I also remember
something my mother said.
"When we are no longer around,
and all of you will be in your own homes,
"don't let this house go to ruin."
[in English] "You know,
just sell it. Let it go."
[music fades]
-[Navya] Everyone's starving.
-[Kareena] Where's the food?
-You've been here for a while?
-[Armaan] What's happening outside?
-[Ranbir] Waiting for food.
-[Armaan] I'm going mental.
-[Navya] Everyone's hungry.
-I'm really sorry. Sorry about this.
-[Navya] The whole thing?
-[Armaan] No!
-Stressing?
-We put it in the wrong thing.
-You put it. You are putting.
-[Navya] He said put it in that!
Put put. Put the whole thing.
[Navya] We were waiting for Armaan
to come out with the food.
And when he wasn't coming out,
we went into the kitchen
and realized that
Armaan was a colossal mess
and was severely stressed out. [chuckles]
-Tadka for?
-Dahi pakora curry.
-Don't you put ghee in your tadka?
-Lots of ghee. I'll put extra ghee.
-You're sure? Not half?
-It'll taste good. It'll taste super. Aah!
Armaan and I spent
a lot of time with Ranbir.
We had so many interests, you know.
We all played football in the same team.
Uh, he bought me my first football shoes.
He was like that older,
cooler brother, you know,
that, that we would want to go and meet.
Wrestling was a very big thing
at that time.
And I used both of them as guinea pigs,
I used to constantly throw them around.
He shows love in a very different way.
-[tempering sizzles]
-Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
-You bloody...
-[Armaan grunts]
-I didn't realize. Sorry.
-You burnt me.
Sorry, sorry, you got hurt?
-Sorry.
-It's okay.
-[Navya] Shaira, Zahan!
-[in Hindi] Guys. Cut the vegetables.
-[in English] The professionals are here.
-[screeches] Shaira! Butter the kulchas!
-I'm making desi food, not continental.
-[Hindi] That's fine.
[Ranbir] He's put
so much butter in this dal.
-[Armaan] Yes, you know
-It's a full cholesterol attack.
-Armaan!
-[Armaan] Yeah, yeah!
-Shout! Shout!
-For table 18.
[Armaan] I have a lot of pressure
to get food on the table.
-Let's go! Let's go!
-Hello?!
-Shaira's not doing anything.
-[Armaan, in Hindi] Is that rice?
[in English] I don't think this is
the correct way to butter kulchas.
-You're plating the rice?
-Yeah.
Oh, wild! This is gonna really save time.
Guys, Navya has already plated
like six plates of rice.
-We're good on time.
-I'm the most helpful person.
Not bad. But what are you serving?
But this looks like a Japanese serving.
Well done, Shaira.
Well done. Good buttering.
-What about me?
-[in Hindi] She's an expert at buttering.
-[in English] Super.
-[Zahan] Is your tempering ready?
It looks ready, yeah.
-[in Hindi] Salt okay?
-[in English] Wow.
[Pooja] Your tadka is ready.
-[in Hindi] Butter it, Shaira.
-[Shaira, in English] Shut up!
Zahan!
-Did you taste truffle?
-It's not there.
-I couldn't.
-[Navya] It's going in the dal?
Yeah, he has a very famous truffle dal.
-[in Hindi] Wipe his sweat.
-It's okay. [in English] I'm good.
-You're good? It'll fall in our food.
-I like huh?
-[in Hindi] Don't put it in our food.
-[in English] The tadka.
-The real tadka.
-I'll do.
That is that is love.
-When the sweat falls into your food.
-[Pooja] Eww.
-The ghee. That is love.
-[in Hindi] Do this.
-Come on. [in English] Group hug.
-[all] Group hug.
-Come on, Pooja.
-[Shaira] Me!
[Ranbir] We were extremely hungry.
I think it was 3 p.m. already.
And the family gets a bit cranky
when they don't get their food on time.
So, leaving, I also reminded him.
"Hurry up, man. We're hungry, you know."
"Which Kapoor has no filter?"
Ranbir.
He shoots out.
[in Hindi] He just says anything.
Rima also blurts out sometimes.
[in English] Not this,
but the generation above us,
none of them had a filter.
Daboo, Chimpu, Rima,
my husband had no filter.
In this generation, Kareena.
[funky music playing]
I think all the Kapoors
don't have a filter, do they?
You can't just name one.
The entire family.
"Which Kapoor
is the biggest [in Hindi] 'ghutan'"?
"Ghee-tone?"
"Gluten?"
-"Glutton."
-But what is glutton? [chuckles]
Like, one who stuffs himself?
Toss-up between me, Armaan, Aadar.
Rima bua.
[funky music continues]
Ranbir?
I think so Ranbir loves to eat a lot.
He can really eat. Once I was shocked.
I said, "Ranbir, you eat so much?"
-They all eat well. [chuckles]
-[in Hindi] I can't name them. [chuckles]
[calls out] Chimpu!
No one could eat as much as him.
Other folks come,
chomp food for ten minutes and leave.
He would go on eating and eating
Oh, goodness!
[Ranbir, in English] What was
your childhood breakfast?
-[Riddhima] Everything.
-Rye milk.
-I'm really hungry now.
-[Riddhima] Even I'm hungry.
-So hungry.
-Tell your husband
[in Hindi] to bring the food.
[in English] This is turning out to be
a typical Kapoor lunch.
-[Kareena] Yeah.
-[Armaan] Guys, the food's finally ready.
-Yay! Yay!
-Yay! Yay, Armaan!
Sorry for the long delay, but
-Let's go, guys!
-[Armaan] Let's have a feast.
-Come.
-Chef Ali.
-Saifu, where are you?
-[Saif] Yeah, here, jaan. Hi.
-[Bharat] We are ready, let's go.
-[Kareena] Let's go.
[guitar strums entry music]
-[Armaan] Come.
-[Riddhima] Yay!
-Wow, this is insane.
-Oh, my god! Oh, my god! That's my mom.
-Wait, did Armaan get baby photos?
-Yeah.
That's how you're supposed
to find your place.
[Aadar chuckles] Definitely not.
-That's Tashu.
-[chuckles]
[Saif] Look who's that.
[Kareena] That's Papa.
[calls out] Papa!
-That's me, right?
-[Anissa] Yes.
[Saif] Fab. That's Tim.
-That's Tim?
-[Kareena] Full Tim?
-Full Tim.
-Is that you?
-Looks like him.
-[Saif] Nice picture.
-He looks like Taimur.
-[indistinct chatter]
-[Neetu] So cute.
-[Karisma] Yeah.
-[Saif] Is that Lolo?
-[Kareena] Lolo. Yeah.
-[Navya] Neila aunty's here.
-Okay.
-You're next to your favorite person. Me.
-[Armaan] Next to both your favorites.
-Even I'm here. This one.
-Next to your favorite people.
I'm here.
-[Armaan] That's Bebo.
-[Pooja] How cute.
-Oh, that's me.
-[Armaan] That's you.
[Kareena] So cute, right?
Aadar. Oh, God.
Ranbir, you saw your picture?
I love these pictures.
So nice, man.
[Armaan] Okay, guys.
-So...
-[Kareena] Yay!
-Can you wear that hat, please?
-[Kareena] Armaan.
-[Randhir] They're serving tea now.
-[Armaan, chuckles] No. Sorry.
I know it's already teatime almost.
But, but food's ready.
[Kareena] But the Kapoors
always eat lunch at teatime.
Yeah. [chuckles]
I'm doing it differently
where we aren't doing it the Kapoor style
where we kind of have
all those hand is on the table.
I'm trying to plate it.
-What?!
-Yeah, I'm plating it. Course by course.
-Are we paying for it?
-[chuckles]
-[Armaan chuckles] No.
-[all chuckle]
Not paying for it,
but we'll have fun between the courses.
So I'm just gonna go in,
get the first course.
-Yeah, you have to be with us.
-[Navya] Yay!
-[Ranbir] Let's go.
-Yay!
-[Kunal] Let's go.
-[Ranbir] Go for it.
[lively music playing]
[Zahaan] Come on.
-There are no place mats. Nothing.
-[in Hindi] Food's here!
[Kareena, in English] Yay!
Okay, I must tell you,
my first core memory of any kind of food
was this mac and cheese that Dadi
used to make and she used to call it bake.
And I don't know if this is legal,
but she used to temper it with ghee.
[all chuckle]
Remember, she used to cook
on that small choolah outside?
[Neetu] And every dinner
there used to be this.
I guess those days it was very posh.
-[in Hindi] To bake something.
-[Neetu] Right.
[in English] And what Neetu aunty
has done to me in my pregnancy
when I was eating the bake dish.
-[Neetu] What did I do?
-You did that. I was eating so much.
And you were like,
[in Hindi] "Eating too much."
[in English] I said,
"But I'm pregnant. I'm allowed to eat."
You were like, "Don't eat all this."
-Everybody.
-[Ranbir raps table]
-[Neetu] Everyone!
-Why don't we ask the whole table
to mention one core memory
of a dish that they had in Chembur?
-We'll start with Kanchan aunty.
-Yeah, of course.
The most famous thing that I remember
is that silver bowl of ghee
which used to be there
in the middle of the table,
accompaniment to anything
and made it perfect.
You know, like, dal-chawal and ghee.
Or sabzi and ghee.
-That silver thing.
-Silver bowl.
-With that bent spoon. [chuckles]
-Yeah.
Dadi ji's secret.
Papa, please.
They'd make a roast chicken.
[partially in Hindi] Raj uncle used
to make that crab masala.
[in English] So my favorite was
this khichdi which Mom used to make.
And, uh, this very soft
overcooked cauliflower.
For me as a child, I only grew up
eating paya and kadak pav.
It was I was just
-Brun Pav.
-[Kareena] ...obsessed. Yeah, Brun Pav.
-It was so crunchy, it made that sound.
-Yeah.
Lolo, you?
Guys, for me, I think it's paya,
baked crab and junglee mutton.
-There used to...
-And the dash of tabasco
in that lovely shell of Dadi ji's.
-And little forks. Little tiny forks.
-Favorites.
-The slim ones.
-Remember, there was a boy.
Was he Dadi ji's help
or Chintu uncle's? Chandrapal?
-Chandrapal!
-Dadi's. Dadi's.
He's here serving the baked crab.
No, that's Manoj uncle's, uh
[in Hindi] Chandrapal died long ago.
-No. He's here.
-[in English] You saw a ghost.
That's Vishal, man.
Oh my god, he looks the same there.
And Mistry ji.
-Mistry was
-Mistry ji was the king.
-Dadi taught him.
-[Kareena] Of course.
I heard there was a separate
naan maker and a separate
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yeah, he used to come with those
-Choolahs. To make.
-What was the naan maker lady's name?
-Tari. Tari. Tari.
-[Ranbir] Tari.
Chimpu, Karan and I
would go there and stand there.
[in Hindi] "Piping hot naans!"
[in English] We used to stand there
waiting for our turn for it.
Each time I went over, I was like,
"Dadi, have you made Chinese aloo?"
-[Kunal] What is Chinese aloo?
-What's Chinese aloo?
-[Bharat] It's a healthy option.
-So, uh, not Chinese.
-No, it was Chinese. Shut up!
-Not Chinese.
-You didn't have anything else. Only that.
-You only ate three aloo.
-Three aloo.
-Nobody remembers except you.
No, no, no, listen, listen.
My first memory of
having machhi curry and rice is
sitting with Nani,
pressing her feet and watching KBC.
We watched it
every single night at nine o'clock.
And she'd give us ten rupees
for every answer.
We'd only make 30 rupees
because we were that dumb.
But we would have machhi curry with ghee.
No, Armaan used to put ghee
and look at us and, like, laugh evilly.
-[all laughing]
-[upbeat music playing]
[music fades]
[Karisma] Oh, my God.
Wow, look at this.
It is good.
Armaan, this is very fancy.
-Very fancy.
-The plating.
-What is this?
-The fish curry has it's a ghee dripper.
-[Navya] Oh, my God.
-[all gushing] Ooh! Woah!
-[Armaan] It's a ghee dripper.
-[Navya] I love it.
[Kanchan] Armaan, yummy.
-[Armaan] It's good.
-Cheers.
-Cheers! I'll put ghee for you?
-Okay.
-Want ghee?
-Put ghee.
[woman] Superb.
[Saif] Wow, that's really nice.
The machhi curry
with the ghee on top, you know,
he insisted on everybody putting that,
which I thought was a cute touch
because Dadi ji also
used to force everybody,
[in Hindi] "Put some ghee on it."
[in English] Sitting in
my grandmother's room, which was large,
a lot of people could fit in there.
And then the feeding used to start,
you know, and that was a two-hour process.
And the way she used to
feed people, you know.
[in Hindi] "Take the rice, mash it,
put ghee on it and then eat it."
[in English] You know,
she used to make it so tasty.
She's like, "It's very good for your body.
It's very good for this."
And I used to see
Neetu collapsing over there
because she would say,
"Ghee? Are you crazy?"
She would bring her own tiffin
and come and
This fish is surmai.
-Neetu aunty, you won't have the ghee, no?
-[Neetu] I had, I put. Hmm.
[guests chuckling]
This is my favorite for sure.
The fish curry rice Nani's is
And I think cooking for somebody
is such a selfless art.
You know, like, you really have to have
the ability to serve somebody, you know,
and to make them happy.
["Home is where you belong" playing]
These are my nani's recipes.
Wherever it's tagged are all the recipes.
The other pages are all phone numbers.
[in Hindi] "Half kilo mutton."
"Quarter kilo breast. Yes."
"Twenty peppercorns."
"Pure ghee." [in English] Pure ghee.
-[slow guitar music playing]
-So in 2018, after Nani passed away,
my biggest insecurity was that
I would lose all these recipes.
I wouldn't be able to cook them,
I won't be able to eat them,
there'll be no one to make them.
[in Hindi] Wow, now it will be tasty.
The taste will come through
with butter and cream.
[in English] It's special he's doing that,
adding his own touch of love, of family,
of ghee and tadka to it
and giving it to us.
And I think that that's how
traditions are passed down.
Let's see how it's gonna turn out to be.
[Armaan] So while I was deciding
the menu for the family lunch,
Karisma called and said
she wanted to meet me.
She had some kind of surprise for me,
so I went across and met her.
[vehicle horns hooting in the distance]
-[Karisma] Hi.
-[Armaan] Hi, Lolz!
Let's sit here.
[Karisma] I have something
very special to show you.
[Armaan] Okay.
This is a cookbook that Dada ji gave me.
Just see.
[Armaan] How long back was this?
This was, see, June 1985.
[Armaan] "To Lolo."
"My darling, a woman's way
to a man's heart is through his stomach."
"I want you to try all these recipes
on your grandfather before you meet him."
[Karisma] Yeah.
-Just see. [chuckles]
-[Armaan] Wow!
[Karisma] They are actually
all the things that he likes.
[Armaan] "Fried peanuts, cheese balls."
I think this is going to be on the menu.
We need a lot of fried food that day.
[Karisma] With this, I found this picture.
See, this is his handwriting again.
Please look at my stomach.
I was a foodie from that time only.
-[Karisma chuckles]
-You're a full Kapoor in this.
-Such a cute picture.
-[Karisma] Full on, right?
[Armaan] He loved you.
He loved all of y'all.
I wish I could meet him.
-[Karisma] I know. I know.
-[wistful music playing]
I'm actually jealous
of every single member
who got to spend time with him.
And whatever little connection
that I do have with him,
I've always felt since I was very young,
'cause I've heard so much from my mum,
I've always felt that
he's always been around.
And that connection
was always built for me through Nani,
through my other family members,
and at the bungalow.
Armaan has created
a kind of a museum at his own place
of things which he took
from Deonar cottage when it was sold.
So he really respects that.
He really, um, understands that value.
He's like an old soul who really wants
to actually go back into the past and,
you know, keep his family legacy going.
[Rima] You know, my sons
never got to meet their grandfather.
So, when they were small, and they
used to trouble me eating their food,
I used to show them
the circus part of Mera Naam Joker.
So they actually thought,
for quite some time,
that my father was a joker.
Armaan had a party where I had to recreate
the same joker.
Identical.
And when he walked in,
my son was, like, astounded.
He was like
[in Hindi] Live here
[in English] He thought
his grandfather had walked in.
[in Hindi] where else to go but here?
Call me whenever you like
I am where I always was
Our Heaven and Earth
Both are right here
Where else can you go?
-[guests chatting indistinctly]
-[guests laughing]
Only one person is not saying anything
and sitting like this.
-[Neetu] Who's that?
-Lolo.
I have made some [chuckles]
[Kareena] Just the right amount.
-[Neetu, in Hindi] Correct.
-[Kareena, in English] Yeah.
[Rima] Surprise!
[all cheering and hooting]
[all cheering and applauding]
-[Rima] I had to.
-[all cheering]
-[Riddhima] Oh, my God!
-I had to come. I had to come.
Wow!
[lively music playing]
Boom, she shows up.
And I saw the switch in the electricity
of the atmosphere.
She brings the energy.
She brings the stories.
She brings the candidness
to the conversation, if you might say.
I didn't change.
I'm sorry. I'm badly dressed.
-I knew that you were coming.
-[Riddhima] I want to hug you because
She just brought that.
It was like a [imitates whoosh]
Like, that big energy bam that we needed.
She kind of had
that star entry moment, you know,
in the interval point
of a film. [chuckles]
-Bhoks!
-Come and sit. Come and sit.
[Kareena] Sit, sit, sit.
Because we all were genuinely bummed.
Couldn't have this without her.
She's a big part of this family.
It was really heartwarming and really
brought a smile to everybody's face
that she made it.
Oh, look at the mogras.
-Your favorite.
-Woah! Woah! Woah! Woah!
[Neetu] It was a pleasant shock.
Beautiful shock.
I felt happy that she saw
what her son has done.
I tried plating food and all of that.
It went right and wrong.
[upbeat, peppy music playing]
[guests chatting indistinctly]
[music fades]
Initially, he was plating the food
and bringing it out, then,
he was like, "You know what?
This is not us at all."
Because we're not used to
just being given that.
[in Hindi] "This is all
we're going to eat."
"Just one fish. And one of this."
[in English] Then,
we're just like, "No, no, no."
-[Rima] Pass the food. Nobody's passing.
-Ranbir.
-[Riddhima] Take it.
-Pav!
-[Riddhima] Keep it.
-[women chuckling]
[Rima] I don't want the Brun.
[Kareena] Eventually, he was like,
"I'm just going to bring out the dishes."
"And let's just not try
and be 'posh'." [chuckles]
Do you know your grandfather
used to love his dal?
[Ranbir] Dal.
-[grunts]
-Slowly.
Oh, sorry.
You want the dal?
Kapoors eat food like this. [chuckles]
They don't even use a spoon.
[in Hindi] They serve rice with hands,
take chicken with their hands.
[in English] And like, when that happens,
sometimes, Saif and all are like,
"What is happening?
Why is Lolo using her hand?"
Saifu, take some aloo.
[Aadar] All right, guys, guys!
Can I have everyone's attention, please?
-Hello.
-[all] Yay!
[Riddhima] Aadar in the house.
Aadar in the house.
When Armaan first told me that I have
to say something today, give a speech,
I said, "No one does this in our family."
But then, I thought
that being the youngest
in our loud, big, fat Punjabi family
-[chuckles]
-I never really got a chance to speak.
So I observed.
[chuckles] And today, I'm gonna
talk to you about my observations.
-[all] Oh, no!
-[chuckling]
Aadar, I'm not talking to you
if you say anything about me.
They say, some family trees
produce a huge crop of nuts.
-I think they meant our family.
-[Kareena] Yeah!
[all chuckling]
Because everyone's nuts.
[Kareena] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
-[Aadar] Everyone's loud.
-Agreed.
Everyone's proud, funny.
And we're obsessed,
clearly, with our food.
Even right now, while meeting each other,
we don't say, "Hi, hello."
We say, [in Hindi] "What's for dinner?"
[in English] But the real question is,
[in Hindi] what is it in our food,
[in English] that we all look
and sound alike?
Armaan looks like Chintu uncle.
Lolo looks like Mom.
And I look like Ranbir.
-How do you look like me?
-We both look like you.
More than I look like her.
How did that come? How did that happen?
Sometimes I think we look
more like brothers than me and Armaan.
[Riddhima, Kareena] Yeah.
In fact, sometimes I think
Saif also looks like Chintu mama.
[all chuckling]
And speaking of brotherhood,
Ranbir bhaiya once said
that I don't call him Bhaiya.
But how can I not?
After all, he's taught me so much in life.
He taught me the most
colorful language in the world
and made me repeat them
to all his friends.
I even performed for them.
And he never told anyone.
No one except Armaan.
[Kareena chuckles]
Or Riddhima.
Or Mom, Kunal mama, Saif,
Lolo, Bebo, Riddhima,
Bharat bhaiya, Daboo mama,
Kanchan aunty, Bunty maasi,
Neila aunty, Chintu mama, Neetu aunty,
the whole world. But that's it.
-He's the best secret keeper.
-I won't tell anybody else. [chuckles]
So thank you, Bhaiya,
for educating me all these years.
[woman 2] Ranbir can't keep anything
in his stomach.
[all cheering and applauding]
Speaking about education,
thank you, Saif,
for raising the IQ on the table.
-Oh, wow! Yay!
-[all cheering and applauding]
But speaking of being smart,
and the healthiest is Neetu mami,
who carries her
healthy dabbas wherever she goes.
Even at Christmas brunch, when there's
turkey, ham, pudding, she'll still have
her bowl of quinoa, one lettuce,
three flax seeds, half a carrot.
[all chuckling]
And the Santa Claus of our family
is our sweet, innocent Tashu.
-[woman 1] Woah!
-[Rima] Oh, Wow!
-Tash!
-Woah!
Who not only spoils us with her gifts,
but also sometimes
her unintentional comedy.
[all chuckling]
Recently, a cousin of mine
got into Harvard.
Obviously, a very proud moment
for any family.
Here comes Tashu.
"Wow, Harrods! Congratulations!"
-[all chuckling]
-No!
[laughing]
Riddhima!
[all chuckling]
Congratulations on being the newest,
and also the oldest debutante
in our family.
[all laughing]
Bebo didi.
-[Kareena chuckles]
-Good looks, good looks, good looks.
Oh, enough about me.
[all chuckle]
Whenever Bebo didi meets you,
the first thing she'll say,
[in Hindi] "What's going on?"
[in English] "What's happening? What's up?
Come, come, come. Sit, sit, sit."
-"What's the goss?"
-[Neetu chuckling]
Total detective.
Mom, you said that Nana ji was
also the biggest detective in the family.
-You clearly got his genes.
-In his cottage, he got every news.
In Bebo's and Ranbir's homes,
they get to know everything.
But they never, they never talk about it.
-[sarcastically] Oh, sure!
-[all laughing]
We are like Google.
We have the information,
but unless you guys don't search for it,
you won't know.
-[Saif] Bravo.
-Yeah, good one, Ranbir.
And, Mom, the quintessential dramatic,
overprotective mummy,
who raised both me and Armaan
like babies for 30 years.
Oh, what rubbish! What rubbish!
She wouldn't sleep until we came home.
Didn't give us keys.
Guilt-trip us. "BP, BP, BP."
Call us every 20 minutes.
-What rubbish!
-"What are you doing? Where are you?"
"Please come home. I'm getting BP."
[chuckles]
But all jokes aside, she's
the most caring mother in the world.
-The most loving mother in the world.
-Yay!
And not just to me,
but I feel like to everyone.
And last but not the least, Armaan.
[laughing]
-[Armaan] Why me, man?
-[Aadar] Cool.
Calm, collected.
-Words I will never use to describe you.
-[chuckles]
Because leading up to this lunch,
you've driven everyone crazy.
But that just shows
that all his hyperactive aunty behavior
means that how much he really cares.
And how much he wanted today
to be the perfect celebration
for all of us.
-[Rima] Proud of you, son.
-Hear! Hear!
Hear! Hear! Your grandfather
would've been proud of you.
Shut your ears.
I love you, Armaan.
-[all] Aww!
-[all chuckling]
[Riddhima] That's so sweet.
Thank you for organizing all this.
Thank you everyone for being here.
Thank you for this lovely
Was it a toast or a roast on me?
-I thought your words were very kind.
-Yeah, it's not very roasty.
I roasted him for 30 years of my life.
Now how much more?
But last but not the least,
I just wanna say,
as a family, I know we don't get
to meet as much as we'd like.
But when we do get together
for occasions like these,
it just reminds us that
families are like branches of a tree.
-[Riddhima] Absolutely.
-We may grow in different directions,
but the roots will remain the same.
-Hear! Hear!
-Wow!
[all applauding]
-Well said, Aadar.
-[Aadar] Thank you.
-[Saif] Well-spoken, man.
-[man 1] Great speech.
May I say something?
-No.
-Yeah!
-Yes.
-[Riddhima chuckles]
You know what I was feeling that I just...
[Aadar] Stand. Mom, stand.
No, I'm not standing.
I'm Prithviraj Kapoor's granddaughter.
He was a stage artist.
He said, "Throw your voice
from the stomach. Hear me all."
-So
-[pensive music playing]
I was last in the house because
Daboo married and went.
Chintu married and went.
Ritu had gone long before.
Chimpu was in and out of Pune.
Sometimes he was shooting or whatever.
And I didn't get married
for very long. [chuckles]
And my dad was an owl like I am.
He wanted company in the night.
[in Hindi] Whoever visited,
and if nobody,
he would talk to his masseur.
[in English] But he wants somebody.
And nobody understood him
post a certain hour in the night.
So they would say,
[in Hindi] "The lion is waiting,
don't go into his room now."
I used to go into his room right then,
pick a fight and leave.
I used to always tell him,
[in English] "I'll never leave you."
[in Hindi] He'd say,
"No, you'll get married."
"And if I'm alive at your wedding"
I'd even fight with him over it
many a times.
"What is this nonsense?"
"What do you mean by saying,
'if I'm alive'?"
He would say, "If I'm alive"
Then I'll give you a wedding
"with stars shining everywhere."
-"Such a wedding."
-[music intensifies]
But then he left.
[music fades]
-Good morning, everybody.
-Good morning. Good morning.
Good morning, everybody.
[Neetu] What I really loved
about that family
was their relationship with each other.
She's shouting, "Put the TV on.
[in Hindi] Rima, don't do it."
And I'm searching for the remote.
[in English] If Randhir Kapoor
and Rishi Kapoor are there,
that was the best entertainment.
Because the way they spoke
and they argued with each other
was entertainment.
You didn't need anything else.
My two sisters
My two sisters
Crushing and sitting with each other.
Fighting, pushing.
[all laughing and shouting]
You might say, "Hello, hello."
-[in Hindi] On this day, I...
-[indistinct shouting]
[Neetu, in English] They all fought.
They all loved each other.
I really feel joint families
are so much fun.
[lively song playing]
[Armaan] All the brothers and sisters,
they would always line up in age order.
So, like, Randhir,
Ritu, Rishi, Rima, Rajiv,
they'd hold each other's hands like this
and they'd pose
for a picture at every party.
That was like their standard thing
when they were together.
[music fades]
[Rima, in Hindi] Where
have those days gone? [sniffles and sobs]
[melancholic music playing]
[sniffles]
Everyone's gone.
[in English] Papa went first.
-Then my mother went.
-[melancholic music plays]
Then my older sister went, Ritu.
Then, Chintu.
And then, Chimpu, the youngest.
[melancholic music continues]
We were all feeling,
[in Hindi] "What's happening?"
[in English] It was
it was just unbelievable.
How can so many people go
in a span of two years?
[Kareena] I think
somewhere in my father's heart,
he still feels like Chimpu uncle
and Chintu uncle are there with him.
I don't think he'll ever accept
the fact that they're not there.
[music fades]
["Jaane Kaha Gaye Woh Din" playing
on piano]
[in Hindi] Raj Kapoor would always say,
[in English] "If you're born
in this world",
if you've come to life,
live in such a way
that something you do,
people, when you die,
"can remember you by."
[in Hindi] So people would say,
"He was a good person."
"He achieved something in life."
[continues playing "Jaane Kaha
Gaye Woh Din" on piano]
-[Riddhima] Wow!
-[Neetu] Amazing!
Superb!
-[Kareena] Yay!
-[Neetu] Fabulous! Fabulous!
So good! Amazing!
[Rima] He loved this song!
-[Riddhima] Take a bow!
-[Neetu] Fabulous! Fabulous!
-[Riddhima] Take a bow!
-[guests applauding]
Papa, what's happening?
-Are you okay?
-Yeah, yeah, I'm alright.
Uh, so just to remind you that
we all here today are not just gathered
to eat this high cholesterol,
nostalgic food made by Armaan,
uh, but to celebrate a great man,
a great artist,
his better half,
and also life's three
most exquisite pleasures.
That's food,
films, and family.
[pensive music playing]
So let us raise our glasses to a toast,
to the movies that inspire us,
to the families that stand by us,
and to the meals that brings us together.
To the greatest showman, Mr. Raj Kapoor,
to the greatest host,
Krishna Kapoor.
We love you, we miss you.
[in Hindi] "We live here, we die here"
[all in chorus] "Where else can we go?"
-[Ranbir, in English] Cheers!
-[all] Cheers!
God bless you.
[Arman, in Hindi] Open the curtain.
Open!
-Careful, not too ahead.
-[guests clamoring]
-Woah!
-[Riddhima, in English] What's that?
[Armaan, in Hindi] Stop.
[Neetu, in English] What's that?
Thank you.
Armaan, what's this?
-It's a small surprise for everyone.
-Wow!
So, this is the last of it today.
And, uh I decided to make something
that we can all preserve and keep with us.
I mean, uh, it's something very small.
-Let's see.
-Come.
[Armaan] Daboo uncle,
do you want me to turn you?
[Manoj] No, no,
I'll get him. I'll get him.
-[Zahan] I don't know.
-Where's Saif?
-[Karisma] Wait.
-I'll help you.
-Come on, Armaan. Let's go.
-[Armaan] Are we ready?
[Saif] Armaan, pull it really fast.
Can you do this? [swishes]
Come on, Armaan!
-[Saif] One, two, three.
-You can do this!
[all] Oh!
[all] Oh! Wow!
No way.
Oh my God.
[Zahan] It's the bungalow.
[Zahan] This is the front.
-Oh, my God!
-House in Deonar.
-This angle, I've never seen that.
-[Kareena] I know. We are at the back.
-This chair.
-[Kareena] I see the entrance.
-This is the entrance.
-Yeah.
[Kareena] That's the entrance.
The gate.
-[Neetu] Gate.
-The way you come.
[Riddhima] Oh, my God.
See the water fountain.
[Kareena] The marble steps
with the wrought iron.
[women] Oh!
[Ranbir] The white tiles used to be
really hot because of the sun.
This is my mother's room.
[Ranbir] I'll turn it.
-[Rima] I'll tell you where my room is.
-[Aadar] Where was your room, Mom?
[Riddhima] Oh my God, the swing!
-[Rima] This is where he sat.
-[Saif] The terrace on top.
Daboo, Chintu, Chimpu, Ranbir.
-[Saif] The room on top?
-[Aadar] Your room?
-On the other side.
-Talking about this?
Yeah, yeah. No, here.
-This is Dadi's room.
-[Ranbir] That's a balcony.
Remember attic?
They used to dry clothes there.
-Dry clothes.
-[Rima] This was my room.
So, guys, this opens up.
This opens up,
and you can see certain areas.
-[Ranbir] Oh!
-Oh my God.
-Downstairs.
-Oh my God.
[Karisma] This is amazing.
[Kareena] Staircase with that thing
is there, with the wrought iron.
-[Neetu] The carpet is also the same.
-[Karisma] The detailing is amazing.
[Neetu] The dining table.
-[Ranbir] All the kids used to play there.
-[Kareena] Outside.
[Neetu] Aah, the sofa.
[Kareena] We'll get into every den.
-[Neetu] The carpet.
-[Riddhima] Piano was here.
-[Ranbir] Here, here.
-[Neetu] Here.
-[Riddhima] That's amazing.
-[all applauding]
Well done, Armaan!
-[Riddhima] Well done, Armaan.
-[Neetu] So lovely.
[Riddhima] This was
a beautiful surprise for all of us.
[Anissa] Fabulous. Nostalgic.
So we've had such great memories
in this bungalow.
Nani hosted many parties.
We had some great times.
I hosted today.
-Who's next?
-[all chuckling]
-It takes a lot to plan.
-Who's next?
-[Anissa] Yes.
-[Ranbir] It does.
See, we've got Christmas at Kunal uncle's.
-[Armaan] Yeah.
-I don't mind taking Diwali.
-Normally, Diwali was done by Bebo.
-[Kareena] Yeah.
-Choti Diwali.
-Choti Diwali.
Then Ranbir can do Diwali.
I will do Holi.
No, but we should keep planning
things together.
Like Mom keeps saying,
we should keep taking responsibility
in this generation
and the next generation.
-[Rima] And generations to come.
-[Aadar] A lot of responsibility.
A lot of responsibility
for the next generation.
[Aadar] The oldest of the next generation.
Yeah, the eldest of the next generation
to take our legacy forward.
-Listen, can I also just say one thing?
-[Armaan] Yes.
Which is, you know, I want to thank
all of you for always making me a part
and welcome in your lovely, lovely family.
Sometimes we feel
the whole world is falling apart,
but you are a lovely family
and you're so warm and close together.
It's really a wonderful thing to see.
And thank you for always sharing that.
And God bless you all
and [air kisses] lots of love.
-Well done, you guys. Thank you.
-[Kareena] Thank you.
Thank you.
[wistful music playing]
[in Hindi] "Tomorrow"
I may not be
In this world,
The stars will always glitter in the sky.
You will forget
They will forget
"But I will always remain with you"
Thank you.
Thank everybody and all of you.
["Jeena Yaha Marna Yaha" playing]
[audience applauding]
