[ Panting ]
[ Exhales ] It was a dream I had as a
kid, but I haven't had it in years.
[ Woman ] Maybe you didn't
have a reason to...
until you started thinking
about your grandmother again.
Mmm.
So where's the house again?
Idyllwild.
I don't know it.
It's kind of hidden.
It's just outside
of, uh, Palm Springs.
Hmm, sounds enchanting.
Could be the perfect place
to recharge.
I don't have time
for a vacation.
It could be
the perfect place to write.
Mm, don't remind me. I have to.
I have a 10-year-old who's waiting
with baited breath for your next book.
It's funny.
I spent my entire career...
trying to capture the voice
of every scared child,
to try and somehow make things easier
for the children who read my books.
But... you know what?
I'm the one who's scared now.
- Why do you say that?
- Because Ronnie has to grow up,
and I'm not sure
she's ready for that.
Is she not ready for that
or are you not ready for that?
Uh...
[ Chuckles ]
I have to say that the book
in the series...
where Veronica deals
with the death of her dog,
oh, it was so helpful to my daughter
in the loss of her own pet.
It had me in tears,
both the book and the dog.
But our daughter, she handled
it better than all of us,
and it was all
because of your book.
[ Chuckles ]
That is why I do what I do.
Did you expect your grandmother
to leave the house to you?
Well, she didn't have anybody
else to leave it to. [ Chuckles ]
What will you do with it?
Um, that's a good question.
The house must be full of memories.
An entire childhood of 'em.
Remember, Nora, when life
becomes overwhelming,
you can handle it.
[ Nora's Voice ]
After I finish the book,
I don't know,
maybe I'll sell the house.
Maybe I won't.
But for now it feels like it wants
me to come back and write there.
I can't wait
until the next book.
[ Laughs ]
[ Man ] The trailer
park is dark tonight
And the stars shine
down on you
And your dad
is outside in scorn
And he waits for me
And I yell to you
"Let's take off
And drive across the bridge
To the next state
And stay there
until we both die
Of old age
" Or something better"
[ Crickets Chirping ]

[ Woman ] Hello? Oh.
Hello!
Oh. Hi.
Sorry. The door was open.
I never knock on an open door.
It's bad luck.
Hi. I'm-I'm Peyton.
Nora. I'm here about
the room for rent.
This is 85 Hyacinth Lane, right?
No, it's not.
Seriously?
I have the wrong house? Yeah.
That's really embarrassing.
I'm really sorry now that I just
barged in like that. It's fine.
It's a really nice place though.
Bummer. I would've
liked it here.
I know you probably don't,
you know, watch football,
but I was named
after Walter Payton.
Walter Payton? Yeah. I
couldn't make that up, right?
So my dad was born in Chicago,
and he lived for the Bears.
So he wanted his daughter
to have a name he loved.
And I guess Butkus isn't really
that feminine... [ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ] so, um, I got Peyton.
Well, at least you
didn't get The Fridge.
[ Laughs ] That's good.
You do know football.
How'd you get your name? Oh,
uh, I didn't know my parents.
My grandmother took me in
when I was four.
So I don't really know
about my name.
This is her house...
Was her house.
You know what though?
That's even better.
Because now you just
get to start from scratch.
Like, um, maybe you were
named after Nora Ephron.
Or it's short for Eleanor.
Eleanor Roosevelt.
You should tell people that you
were named after Eleanor Roosevelt.
Maybe I will. Good.
Then that's settled.
So, um, what else do you
want to know about me?
Um, I go to UC San Diego.
I'm like this close to getting my M.F.A.
In photography.
Do you smoke? Hell, no. Do you?
I used to.
But I'm glad you don't.
It's a deal breaker for me.
"Deal"?
If you would consider
a roommate, my check's clear.
Let me think about it.
Leave me your contact information.
I can call you.
[ Exhales ]
[ Light Switch Clicks ]
Eleanor, uh, Roosevelt.
[ Motor Chugs ]
[ Chugs ]
[ Scraping Sound ]
Hello?
[ Scraping Sound ]
[ Banging ] Hello?
[ Object Clatters ] Who's there?
There are easier and more humane
ways to control pests. [ Gasps ]
Geez. [ Laughing ]
It's, uh...
It's probably just a squirrel.
Jack. I was wondering if
you'd drift back into town.
I'm sorry for your loss.
The whole town loved Dorothy.
I thought I might see you
at the funeral.
Oh, I... It was hard for me.
I understand.
You look very official
these days.
I hope so. I need people
to take me seriously.
[ Laughs ] I know what you mean.
What are you talking about? Village
Books was like a shrine to you.
That's sad.
You look great,
just like your author photo.
I'm glad you stopped by.
Yeah? Absolutely.
I'd even offer you a coffee, but the
bare cupboards are just sort of bare.
That's okay.
I'm running late anyway.
Uh, maybe a rain check?
I'd like that.
[ Typing ]
Oh, this isn't working.
[ Door Closes ]
Nora Clark.
Oh! That is you.
Kelly. What a surprise.
What's it been? Ten years?
Uh, at least.
I never thought
I'd see you again.
I used to ask about you every
time I ran into your grandmother.
Did she ever send you my regards?
No, she did not.
Well, it couldn't have been
easy for her all those years,
all alone in that house.
But I think she'd be happy
to know that you're here now.
I'm sure she would too.
[ Chuckles ]
You know, you'd get a pretty penny for
that land. It's a seller's market.
Mm-hmm. I'm in real estate.
Wow. My ice cream's melting.
I should go.
Okay. Well, welcome back.
Thanks.
Is this Peyton?
Hi. It's Nora Clark.
[ Knocking ]
[ Knocking ]
Good morning. Morning.
We said 9:00 a.m., right?
Did I wake you?
No, no. I was...
I was up late, writing.
We still have a deal, right? Come on in.
It's your house too.
Oh, I love this room.
It's perfect.
It was mine as a kid.
Really? Yeah.
Huh. Why aren't you using it?
Oh, I don't know. I guess I
always wanted the other room.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God. I love this book.
I used to read this
to my nephew all the time,
until one of his brat friends told
him that Veronica wasn't real.
Well, it's hard to keep kids
believing in imaginary things.
No way. This is you.
You're the Nora Clark?
[ Laughs ] Oh, my God.
I can't tell you
how much I love your books.
I've bought them and read them.
I give them as gifts.
- Well, I'm just starting the next one.
- You gotta be kidding me.
You're gonna be creating Veronica's next
adventure right here in front of me?
Well, if I can find
some inspiration.
I'll inspire you.
After high school, I, uh...
I got lost for a while.
I was my own worst enemy.
And then, uh, one day I decided to
grow up and take control of my life.
Simple as that.
I enrolled in the academy.
And I realized it doesn't get
more charming than Idyllwild.
[ Laughs ]
Okay, your turn.
Well, at some point...
I realized that I prefer the kind of
isolation you can only find in a big city.
I went to UCLA.
And then I drifted for a while
until I landed in Santa Barbara.
Where Veronica lives. Sure.
It's a little bit
of art imitating life,
except I lived in a house
in the woods without my parents.
Yeah. Uh, you, um...
You're not married?
Not even close. You?
I was. No kids though,
thankfully.
That bad?
Uh, when you're young,
you're never old enough.
Yeah. And then when you're old...
Well, you know how it goes.
Are you calling me old?
N-No. No. No.
Uh, I mean, uh...
It's fine. We don't
have to talk about it.
I had an affair.
Uh, the marriage was
over already, but... Oh.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean
to get so personal.
I just, um...
I wanted to be honest.
It's fine. Really.
Well, I'm just happy
the past is in the past.
So am I.
My roommate's here. Gotta go.
Why don't you come up to the house?
I'll make dinner.
Great. Cool.
Hey.
Hey. Who is that?
Um... He's hot.
Will I be running into him sneaking out
of your bedroom one of these days,
preferably wearing only a towel?
[ Laughs ]
So I got you a little something
for letting me move in.
No. Do you remember that
shirt that I was wearing...
that you said you love but you could
never pull off? Well, you totally can.
Really? Yeah.
It was just something
I grabbed on sale.
It's just like mine. We just
can't wear them on the same day.
We have got to stop running
into each other like this.
I saw you catching up with Jack.
I didn't want to intrude.
Well, that was
very considerate of you.
So, how is the trip
down memory lane?
I don't understand why people
want to live in the past,
especially when the future
can be so bright.
[ Laughs ] I promise I'm gonna
make a fair offer on the house.
Generous even.
I don't want to sell, Kelly.
Don't let ancient feelings
cloud your judgment, Nora.
Jack is...
He's not worth
sticking around for.
Take it from someone who knows.
I'll be expecting your call.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Chuckles ]
Who was that thing?
My nemesis. At least that's what
she was all through high school.
[ Exhales ] Are you okay?
Yep, I'm fine.
[ Thunderclap ]
[ Rain Falling ]

[ Door Closes ]
[ Shutter Clicks ]
[ Shutter Clicks ]
This is Sputnik.
What's a Sputnik? It's, um...
It's like a 3-D camera.
Hmm. It has two lenses. So
when I release the shutter,
it takes two photographs of
the same subject simultaneously.
But because the lenses are apart just so,
the pictures are slightly different.
And that replicates
the way we see...
with our eyes apart just so?
Yeah. [ Chuckles ]
Do you wanna see some pictures
I've taken with it? Sure.
[ Nora ] You're good.
No, don't say that until you've
actually seen it in 3-D.
Okay. Um... Oh,
I forgot my viewer.
But you know those Magic Eye things?
Sure.
Same principle. So you just lean
in and focus on your index finger.
Now, in a second I'm gonna
tell you to drop your finger,
but you have to maintain
focus on where it was,
and a third picture will appear
between the two you're looking at.
Are you ready for some magic?
Yes.
Okay. One,
two, three.
That is so, so cool. Right?
[ Chuckles ] It takes some
getting used to, but...
I have a proposition.
- What kind?
- Well, the new book needs to be more grown-up.
Like a coming-of-age story?
Exactly.
What if you did
3-D photography for the book?
M-Me?
Why not you?
You can't be serious.
You're serious?
Okay, okay. First of all, I can
barely contain my excitement.
But are you... are you sure?
I'm just a student.
No, this is not
the work of a student.
Are you asking me this just 'cause I'm
your roommate? No. No, not at all.
Okay, boss.
Count me in.
Oh... [ Chuckles ]
[ No Audible Dialogue ] [ Man
] The messenger's old
And gray
And when he sets up, decay
You like chicken soup?
I love it.
Will you get some chicken stock?
That's what I'm here for.
...the same
Nothing is ever rearranged
Nora? Yeah.
Nora.
Eddie. Nora.
Oh, my goodness. [ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ]
Holy cow.
I didn't know you were here.
Well, Grandma left me the house.
Oh.
Of course, of course.
[ Chuckles ]
We had such a great
companionship.
Me and Dorothy,
we... we had so much fun.
And then, uh...
Me too.
What... What was that name
I used to call you?
I can't remember.
Just a second. Uh...
Um... Oh, my mind doesn't
work so good anymore. Uh...
Uh... I can't remember.
Uh... Well, listen.
You look great.
Thanks. I'm really happy
you're back here.
Enchant. [ Laughs ] Enchant.
And I still make the best
hot chocolate in town.
So don't you be a stranger.
Of course. [ Kisses
] Great to see ya.
Bye-bye. Bye.
[ Chuckles ]
God, do you know everyone in this town?
[ Laughs ]
That was my grandma's boyfriend.
I didn't even think
he still lived here.
I'll catch up with you in a sec.
Okay.
The other day you asked how the
trip down memory lane was going.
Uh-huh? That's a trope.
A trope? Yeah. Trope?
Clich.
Something people say when they don't
have anything important to say.
I'm not sure I get your meaning.
How could you?
You are a clich, a walking one.
The house is not for sale,
so leave Nora alone,
or I will wrap that scarf
around your neck...
until your face is
as bleached as your hair.
[ Knocking ]
Hey. I just wanted to find out what
time Jack's coming over tonight.
Actually, we changed the plans.
We're going out for dinner now.
Oh.
Just because we still have
a lot of catching up to do.
You're afraid I might
steal him from you?
[ Laughing ]
Totally kidding. You should go out.
Have a good time.
You should wear that purple shirt
I got you. It'll drive him crazy.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Jack ] Can you believe when we were kids
everything important happened right here?
[ Chuckles ]
There's nothing more confused...
than a teenage girl living
with an overbearing grandmother.
Really? She always
seemed so sweet.
She was very protective.
Uh, this... this is
gonna sound stupid,
but, um, I had a whole camping
trip planned for after graduation.
I hate camping. I know.
[ Laughs ] I need down comforters,
running water and blow dryers.
I was broke, and I figured it was the
cheapest way to get out of here.
I was gonna surprise you
with flowers,
a magnificent box of wine
from my parents' collection...
[ Laughs ] and just see what
it would be like to be us.
And I never let you.
You know, the good news is, I
have a little bit more money now.
So no camping.
Hmm.
I hope you didn't mind that.
Part of me did, but the other
part wants another one.
[ Man ] Hey
The streetlights
all burnt out

[ Tapping Continues ]
[ Door Closes ] Ah!
Are you okay? Yeah, I'm fine.
This is what I get for thinking I can outsmart
whatever creature is squatting in our shed.
I cut my hand on a rusty hook.
Here. Come on.
Ah! Hey. You might
need a tetanus shot.
Yeah. No, thanks.
I'll pass on that.
I'll wait till my arm freezes
up, and they can amputate.
[ Laughing ]
Ah! Hold still.
[ Inhales ] There.
[ Laughing ]
Is that what that noise
was last night?
I could've sworn it was coming
from your room. Maybe it was.
What?
I'm prone to sleepwalking,
so it's possible...
that I just dreamed there was a squirrel
in the shed, and it was me all along.
That's... creepy.
[ Laughing ] I know.
[ Car Horn Honks ]
[ Engine Idling ]
It's Jack.
Oh. Did you two
hook up last night?
Should I be jealous?
Why don't you bandage your hand properly,
and then you can come and meet him?
Why? Are you afraid he
might think I'm dangerous?
Only to yourself.
Go on. You only get one shot
at a first impression.
[ Knocking ]
I was on patrol.
Just thought I'd, uh, stop by to tell
you how much I enjoyed last night.
I'm glad you did. Come in.
Uh, everything okay?
Yeah.
Hey, do you remember
Kelly Lewis?
Yeah. She hasn't stopped bugging me about
selling the house since I got here.
You've seen her? Yeah, twice.
Why? Her husband reported
her missing this morning.
She didn't come home last night.
Oh.
Might be nothing,
but I'm still concerned.
I can't file a missing persons
report for at least 48 hours.
And it's no secret
that they had some problems.
The whole town knows?
Um, it was years ago, Nora.
[ Groans ]
[ Creaking ]
Is there someone here?
Uh, Peyton?
Oh. Can you stay for a bit?
I'd like you to meet her. I
have to go see Kelly's husband.
Her being missing is kind of headline
news in this sleepy little town.
Next time? Sure.
If you need anything, anything at
all, just call me. Okay. Thanks.
Where is he going? Back to work.
Oh. Kelly Lewis is missing.
Who's Kelly Lewis?
The Realtor.
The fake blonde?
Oh, right.
What is that doing here?
Oh, it's cute, isn't it?
Yeah, I found it in my room.
You mean my room.
Did you make it?
Put it down.
I'm sorry. I can clean that up.
No.
I'll deal with it.
[ Door Closes ]
Don't move. [ Gasps ] Oh.
I told you not to move.
What are you doing?
I love everything
about you right now...
except...
[ Sniffles ]
I want you to follow me.
Trust me.
I want you to have a seat.
Oh, no, I don't like... Shh!
This is my way of apologizing.
I want you to relax.
Like you, I didn't have
a lot of friends growing up.
I was always looking for that one special
someone that I could really connect with.
I tried to kill myself.
When I was in college,
I dated a lot of guys.
I guess you could say
I had a reputation.
But there was this one guy that wasn't
anything like the other jerks I dated.
He was a computer whiz.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Laughing ]
Can you get nerdier than that?
It turns out he wasn't anything
like the other guys. He was...
He was worse.
I don't even remember
it happening.
One minute I was eating dinner,
and the next... I woke up,
half-dressed and...
I punched him so hard, I left him
with one hell of a black eye.
Did you tell anybody?
No.
No.
But... I planned my revenge.
I actually planned to kill him.
I knew exactly
how I would do it,
where I would do it.
The look on his face
as the life drained out of him.
He died three weeks later
in a terrible car crash,
almost like
I willed it to happen.
And you know
how screwed up I am?
I actually felt guilty, like I
was responsible for his death...
just because I wanted him dead.
And then I convinced myself
that I was guilty...
and that I deserved
to die for it.
[ Shutter Clicks ]
It's gonna be beautiful.
[ Sighs ]
I hate pictures of myself.
I think it's narcissistic
to like a picture of yourself.
You're beautiful.
[ Footsteps Approaching ]
You know, about earlier,
I've never been
with another woman.
Yeah, neither have I. I just
got caught up in the moment.
Oh. Because I...
You had your night out.
It's my turn now.
Don't wait up.

[ Line Ringing ]
[ Cell Phone Rings ]
Hello? Nora, it's Dr. Barnes.
Hi, Doctor.
You missed your last appointment, so I
thought I'd call. How's everything?
Everything's fine.
We've been speaking
for a long time...
and I have never known you to be
a fan of life being just fine.
Oh, I think
I can live with fine.
Is there something
you're not telling me?
[ Nora Sighs ]
Do you remember a guy I was
telling you about... Jack?
Remember?
From high school?
He and I have reconnected. So maybe it's
the time I've been spending with him...
or spending thinking about him.
Or maybe it's the time I've been
spending staring at the wall...
trying to write.
Sometimes it feels
like they stare back at me.
Well, perhaps you should spend
some more time out of the house.
Peyton keeps saying
the same thing.
I'm sorry. Peyton?
Uh, my new roommate.
I didn't know
you had a roommate.
Well, it wasn't something I planned.
It just kind of worked itself out.
I'm starting to have
second thoughts.
Second thoughts?
Nora?
Nora, what's going on?
Uh, I gotta go.
I'll... I'll call you next week.
[ Sighs ]
What's on your mind? I'm
confused about last night.
I'm not.
[ Sighs ]
[ Typing ]
[ Typing Continues ]
You have to face
the truth, Nora.
[ Typing Continues ]
[ Typing Stops ]
[ Sighs ] Look at
what you made me do.
What?
[ Scoffs ] What was so important that
you had to interrupt me right now?
You've been writing all day. I
know you're just avoiding me.
No, I'm writing all day
because I have a deadline.
Deadline or not, you still
have to eat, right?
So how about I order
some takeout?
I'm going out. [ Typing ]
[ Typing Continues ]
[ Sighs ]
[ Door Alarm Beeping ]
[ Door Closes ]
[ Door Alarm Stops ]
You're such a gentleman.
Thank you.
And thank you for yet another lovely
evening. I should be thanking you.
[ Chuckles ] That was a blast.
I didn't know you
could dance like that.
Well, I'm not the same girl
you knew way back when.
I believe that. You
want to come up?
Uh, are you sure?
Mmm, 50%.
I want you to be 100%.
Take it or leave it.
[ Woman ] Why did you go?
[ Chuckles ]
Why did you
Turn
Away from me?
When all the world
Seemed to sing
Why, why did you go?
Was it me?
Was it you?
Questions in a world
Of blue
Okay, so what'd you find?
The license plate is
a match for Kelly's car.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Uh, Kelly had made
any calls from her cell?
Men can barely
tell the difference.
You're lucky you
stayed for the bacon.
Okay.
I'm leaving now.
I'll be there in 20.
[ Sighs ]
Uh. I'm so sorry. I have to go.
Last night was...
Whatever you're about to say,
I think the same thing.
I'll call you later.
Mm-hmm.
[ Door Opens, Closes ]
Peyton, open up.
I'm not in the mood.
What the hell was that?
I was bored.
[ Typing ]
[ Rhythmic Knocking ]
Hey. Hey.
How you doing?
I'm good. I'm fine. How are you?
Oh, I'm doing great.
I do... Wow. My...
The place looks great.
Oh, thanks.
Look at this.
So many memories.
She used to rock you
in this chair so much.
Ah, my goodness.
Huh.
What are you doing here?
Like-Like... You invited me.
No, I didn't.
I-I thought that you...
I thought that you called me.
Ah, sometimes I get confused,
you know? Uh...
we could just catch up.
You know as much as
your grandma meant to me and...
Yeah. [ Exhales ]
This is not a very good time.
Oh.
I really could...
use one of those long walks
we used to take. Yeah.
I just got
a lot of writing to do.
But... Oh, of course.
The famous writer.
You need your space. [ Laughs ]
I, uh...
We'll do it another time.
Good-bye, Popsicle.
[ Gasps, Panting ]
[ Gasps, Sobbing ]
[ Sobbing Continues ]
[ Peyton ] You okay?
I haven't seen this photo
in 20 years.
My mother and I
used to play this game.
I would whisper really
bad things into her ear...
and then they didn't
seem so scary.
And he would take me
into the woods.
We'd walk past the clearing...
until we reached the stone.
He'd tell me these stories.
He'd help me build
my Popsicle stick house.
[ Eddie ] John Jacob...
Huh? Try it.
[ Together ] John Jacob
Jingleheimer Schmidt
His name was my name too
He told me how he used to... help his
daughter build models and how she hated it.
[ No Audible Dialogue ]
That was when he first
told me about his daughter.
About how she drowned
in the ocean.
He'd make me wear her sweater.
He'd... talk for a while...
and then look at me...
for what seemed like hours.
[ Inhales ] I would run
as fast as I could...
back through the woods.
My grandmother would be inside.
I'd look at her
desperate for help.
But it was like
she wasn't even there.
[ Eddie ] Let me see your face.
You look sad, Popsicle.
Please?
I wish I could forget everything
that I remembered.
[ Sniffles ]
Hey. How are you feeling?
Better. Good.
You want some breakfast?
I'm not hungry. Thanks.
Yeah. I understand.
But if there's anything
you do want, just ask.
I'm... I'm here for you.
Whatever you need.
I appreciate that.
I'll always be here.
And if you need me to go to the police
station with you too, I... I can do that.
I'm not going
to the police station.
So you're just gonna tell Jack?
I don't think so. I don't know.
[ Sighs ] Nora.
Please don't tell me you're just gonna
let this bastard get off scot-free.
He deserves to pay
for what he did to you.
I need some time to think.
Yeah. I get it. You know.
Remember, I've been there.
I know.
And as I recall,
you didn't tell anybody.
And that was a mistake.
So don't make the same one.
This isn't the same thing.
It's exactly the same thing!
Back off, Peyton.
Go call your shrink.
Maybe she can talk
some sense into you.
[ Door Closes ]
[ Dr. Barnes ] Nora.
You have missed
three appointments.
I cannot stress how important
these calls are.
Sorry. I lost track of time.
Why? What's going on?
Uh, I've never been better.
How so?
Jack and I... we're together.
Well, you might be
moving too fast.
Nora?
Nora, are you there? Yeah. Sorry, Doctor.
I got to go. Peyton just walked in.
What are you not telling me?
I don't need to
tell you everything.
I can only help you if you tell
me what's happening in your life.
I can't do a session right now.
I finally broke through
the wall in my writing.
I figured out who
Veronica's best friend is.
Listen, Nora, I have a sister
who lives in Palm Springs...
and I was thinking
of paying her a visit.
I'd like to stop in
and see you on my way there.
No, no. That's not necessary.
Really.
We'll talk later.
[ Peyton ] You found out who
Veronica's best friend is?
Yeah.
I'm so sorry...
for being pushy.
I was making your situation
about me and that isn't fair.
No, it wasn't.
I'll support whatever
decision you make.
Can I ask you something?
What was that thing with
Jack the other day?
[ Sighs ]
That was a joke.
It was out of line.
I'm sorry about that too.
It wasn't a funny joke. I know.
Sometimes when I'm angry,
I do stupid things.
But you have to believe me when I tell
you that I would do anything for you.
Your grandmother is gone,
and he can't hurt you anymore.
You're safe. Okay?
No more bad dreams.
[ Woman ] Nightingale
He flew to me
And told me
That it found my love
He said one day
I'll meet you
Our hearts will fly
With the nightingale
What are you doing in my room?
You tell me. What are you
doing with Kelly's scarf?
I needed it. I was cold...
after I wrapped it around her
neck and choked her to death.
You...
Wait. [ Laughs ]
Come on, Nora.
Is that what you think of me?
I saw her in town leaving her office.
[ Sighs ]
I wanted to confront her,
but I didn't.
The scarf fell out of her bag
and so I brought it back.
I thought maybe
you'd like to burn it.
That's sick.
Do you want to know what's sick?
Seeing that scumbag Eddie
in town just working,
breathing the same air
we're breathing,
acting like he doesn't
have a care in the world.
You want him out there?
Of course not.
Well, have you told Jack yet?
Jack? Yeah, Jack.
How do you know Jack?
Jack. Handsome.
Looks good in a suit.
Slept in your bed
the other night.
How do you know him?
[ Chuckles ] What kind
of question is that?
I saw you together at the caf.
I don't know what you saw,
but it wasn't me.
Are you jealous?
You think I want Jack?
I think you want me.
Is this your way
of getting back at us...
by making me doubt him?
If you don't trust Jack,
that's between you and him.
So don't bring me into it.
Because I've done nothing
but help you.
Stop it!
Stop.
I can't listen to this anymore.

[ Rings ]
Hey, Dr. Barnes.
This is Peyton.
I think Nora needs your help.
Hey.
Hey. Nora, what are
you doing here?
Uh, I'm sorry I haven't called
in the last couple of days.
That's not why I'm here. Uh, I have
something that belongs to Kelly.
I just thought
I should bring it to you.
Okay. Uh, where'd you get this?
Um, Peyton found it outside Kelly's office.
How long has she had it?
Since the night
Kelly disappeared.
What do you mean since the
night she disappeared?
Well, that's what she told me.
Okay. Okay.
I'm glad you brought it to me. It might
help us build a case against her husband.
Her husband? We don't
have anything solid yet,
but, uh, she'd started
divorce proceedings.
They're in some serious debt.
At some point, I'll need to collect your
fingerprints as well as Peyton's...
just to officially rule you both
out in case it is foul play.
And I'll need Peyton to come down
and give an official statement.
If you have so little to go on,
why start with the husband?
You always start
with the husband.
Okay. Or is this just your way of
getting him out of the picture?
What picture?
Of you and Kelly.
Nora, I told you
that was years ago.
But I really don't
appreciate the accusation.
What about Peyton? You don't
suspect she's involved?
I haven't ruled anyone out yet. That's why
I'll need her fingerprints and statement.
Is there something
you're not telling me?
Nora, look. You've got a lot
on your plate right now, okay?
I appreciate you bringing this down,
but don't worry. I'll do my job.
And if you change your mind about
pressing charges, you just let me know.
Charges?
Against Eddie.
I told Peyton I didn't
want anybody else to know.
You can trust me.
Nora, I won't take action without your
permission, as much as I would like to.
I'm sick and tired of people
messing around in my private life.
Messing around?
Dr. Barnes is bad enough.
You and Peyton need to back off!
I'm gonna deal with this myself!

Oh, geez.
Well, hello.

Peyton, are you here?

of the book will be.
I just shot it.
I know you took my pills, Nora.
[ Exhales ]
[ Typing ]
[ Phone Rings ]
Hello. Sheriff's office.
Dr. Barnes available?
It's Jack Tresler
with the sheriff's department.
If you could have her call me. Uh, I sent her
an e-mail too. She should have my number.
Ooh. Hey, guys.
Jack.
I wish I had a choice not
to see what's in there.
Thanks.
[ Man ] They cut his
hands clean off.
I never thought
I would see this in here.
Well, bad people
can live in nice towns.
[ Line Ringing ]
[ Cell Phone Vibrating ]
[ Vibrating ]
[ Vibrating ]
[ Beeps ]
Dr. Barnes,
it's Jack Tresler again.
Listen, if you could call me
as soon as you get this.
I need any information you might have about
Nora or her roommate Peyton. Thanks.
[ Siren Blaring ]
[ Siren Blaring Continues ]
[ Siren Fades Out ]
You should have never
flushed those pills.
Who did this?
How dare you call me crazy.
I'm not the one who brought those
filthy things into our house.
But he deserved paying for it.
And you know it.
He did.
Which is why I'm going to keep
what you did a secret.
This is not how you keep a secret!
You're trying to frame me!
You can't frame someone that
actually committed the crime.
[ Sobbing ] What do
you want from me?
What I've always wanted.
To be a part of your life
for the rest of your life.
I wouldn't do that.
[ Exhales ] Nora.
You'll lose.
Should never have come back here.
[ Sobbing ]
[ Clatters On Floor ]
[ Siren Blaring ]
Hey. It's me. I'm heading
over to your place.
I hope everything's okay.
[ Peyton ] Popsicle.
[ Groans ]
Ohh.
Ohh.
Peyton?
Peyton, where are you?
I'll always be here.
[ Nora Grunting ]
[ Panting ]
Dr. Barnes?
Dr. Barnes?
[ Nora ] Dr. Barnes?
Doctor, wake up.
Wake up.
Popsicle.
It's time to face
the truth, Nora.
You have to stop.
I haven't done anything.
No!
You tried to kill Dr. Barnes!
No, Nora, that was you.
Nora. [ Grunting ]
You need help. [ Siren Blaring ]
Nora. Nora, you're sick.
You need help.
If that was me...
Listen. Listen to me.
You didn't mean to hurt Dr. Barnes.
You were confused. Listen to me.
[ Jack ] Nora, are you okay?
Listen. Listen.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Nora, are you here?
Nora, are you okay?
Okay. [ Exhales ]
I will take care of you. Always.
Okay?
Here.
Here.
Oh.
Trust me.
Sheriff's department.
[ Mumbles ] Shh.
Shh.
You're okay.
You're okay.
[ Jack ] Nora, are you okay?
In here, Jack.
[ Jack ] What's going on, Nora?
Did you catch her?
She left the front door open.
I think she ran away because she
knows that you know about Eddie.
Yeah. Yeah, we got her.
Don't make me see her
again, okay, Jack?
Promise me?
I really don't want
to see her again.
Don't worry. She's-She's
gone away for a long time.
Do you think
she killed Kelly too?
No. No. I spoke to
Kelly earlier today.
Yeah. She had to
leave town abruptly.
It was a big misunderstanding.
Well, that's a relief.
Whose car is that
in the driveway?
Dr. Barnes.
She's here?
I think Peyton might
have hurt her too.
Do you know where she is?
Dr. Barnes?
Dr. Barnes, can you hear me?
[ Woman Vocalizing ]
[ Vocalizing Continues ]
[ Vocalizing Continues ]
Hey.
It's okay. Don't cry.
Don't cry. They're just being
mean because they can.
Trust me.
I'll be here to protect you.
Always.
[ Crickets Chirping ]
[ Insects Chirping ]
La, la, la-la
La-la, la, la
La-la, la-la, la...
[ Footsteps Approaching ]
[ Man Grunting ]
[ Panting ]
[ Exhales ] It was a dream I had as a
kid, but I haven't had it in years.
[ Woman ] Maybe you didn't
have a reason to...
until you started thinking
about your grandmother again.
Mmm.
So where's the house again?
Idyllwild.
I don't know it.
It's kind of hidden.
It's just outside
of, uh, Palm Springs.
Hmm, sounds enchanting.
Could be the perfect place
to recharge.
I don't have time
for a vacation.
It could be
the perfect place to write.
Mm, don't remind me. I have to.
I have a 10-year-old who's waiting
with baited breath for your next book.
It's funny.
I spent my entire career...
trying to capture the voice
of every scared child,
to try and somehow make things easier
for the children who read my books.
But... you know what?
I'm the one who's scared now.
- Why do you say that?
- Because Ronnie has to grow up,
and I'm not sure
she's ready for that.
Is she not ready for that
or are you not ready for that?
Uh...
[ Chuckles ]
I have to say that the book
in the series...
where Veronica deals
with the death of her dog,
oh, it was so helpful to my daughter
in the loss of her own pet.
It had me in tears,
both the book and the dog.
But our daughter, she handled
it better than all of us,
and it was all
because of your book.
[ Chuckles ]
That is why I do what I do.
Did you expect your grandmother
to leave the house to you?
Well, she didn't have anybody
else to leave it to. [ Chuckles ]
What will you do with it?
Um, that's a good question.
The house must be full of memories.
An entire childhood of 'em.
Remember, Nora, when life
becomes overwhelming,
you can handle it.
[ Nora's Voice ]
After I finish the book,
I don't know,
maybe I'll sell the house.
Maybe I won't.
But for now it feels like it wants
me to come back and write there.
I can't wait
until the next book.
[ Laughs ]
[ Man ] The trailer
park is dark tonight
And the stars shine
down on you
And your dad
is outside in scorn
And he waits for me
And I yell to you
"Let's take off
And drive across the bridge
To the next state
And stay there
until we both die
Of old age
" Or something better"
[ Crickets Chirping ]
[ Fades, Indistinct ]
[ Sighs ]
[ Sniffles ]
[ Computer Start-up Tone ]
[ Grunts ]
[ Chuckles ]
[ Woman ] Hello? Oh.
Hello!
Oh. Hi.
Sorry. The door was open.
I never knock on an open door.
It's bad luck.
Hi. I'm-I'm Peyton.
Nora. I'm here about
the room for rent.
This is 85 Hyacinth Lane, right?
No, it's not.
Seriously?
I have the wrong house? Yeah.
That's really embarrassing.
I'm really sorry now that I just
barged in like that. It's fine.
It's a really nice place though.
Bummer. I would've
liked it here.
I know you probably don't,
you know, watch football,
but I was named
after Walter Payton.
Walter Payton? Yeah. I
couldn't make that up, right?
So my dad was born in Chicago,
and he lived for the Bears.
So he wanted his daughter
to have a name he loved.
And I guess Butkus isn't really
that feminine... [ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ] so, um, I got Peyton.
Well, at least you
didn't get The Fridge.
[ Laughs ] That's good.
You do know football.
How'd you get your name? Oh,
uh, I didn't know my parents.
My grandmother took me in
when I was four.
So I don't really know
about my name.
This is her house...
Was her house.
You know what though?
That's even better.
Because now you just
get to start from scratch.
Like, um, maybe you were
named after Nora Ephron.
Or it's short for Eleanor.
Eleanor Roosevelt.
You should tell people that you
were named after Eleanor Roosevelt.
Maybe I will. Good.
Then that's settled.
So, um, what else do you
want to know about me?
Um, I go to UC San Diego.
I'm like this close to getting my M.F.A.
In photography.
Do you smoke? Hell, no. Do you?
I used to.
But I'm glad you don't.
It's a deal breaker for me.
"Deal"?
If you would consider
a roommate, my check's clear.
Let me think about it.
Leave me your contact information.
I can call you.
[ Exhales ]
[ Light Switch Clicks ]
Eleanor, uh, Roosevelt.
[ Motor Chugs ]
[ Chugs ]
[ Scraping Sound ]
Hello?
[ Scraping Sound ]
[ Banging ] Hello?
[ Object Clatters ] Who's there?
There are easier and more humane
ways to control pests. [ Gasps ]
Geez. [ Laughing ]
It's, uh...
It's probably just a squirrel.
Jack. I was wondering if
you'd drift back into town.
I'm sorry for your loss.
The whole town loved Dorothy.
I thought I might see you
at the funeral.
Oh, I... It was hard for me.
I understand.
You look very official
these days.
I hope so. I need people
to take me seriously.
[ Laughs ] I know what you mean.
What are you talking about? Village
Books was like a shrine to you.
That's sad.
You look great,
just like your author photo.
I'm glad you stopped by.
Yeah? Absolutely.
I'd even offer you a coffee, but the
bare cupboards are just sort of bare.
That's okay.
I'm running late anyway.
Uh, maybe a rain check?
I'd like that.
[ Typing ]
Oh, this isn't working.
[ Door Closes ]
Nora Clark.
Oh! That is you.
Kelly. What a surprise.
What's it been? Ten years?
Uh, at least.
I never thought
I'd see you again.
I used to ask about you every
time I ran into your grandmother.
Did she ever send you my regards?
No, she did not.
Well, it couldn't have been
easy for her all those years,
all alone in that house.
But I think she'd be happy
to know that you're here now.
I'm sure she would too.
[ Chuckles ]
You know, you'd get a pretty penny for
that land. It's a seller's market.
Mm-hmm. I'm in real estate.
Wow. My ice cream's melting.
I should go.
Okay. Well, welcome back.
Thanks.
Is this Peyton?
Hi. It's Nora Clark.
[ Knocking ]
[ Knocking ]
Good morning. Morning.
We said 9:00 a.m., right?
Did I wake you?
No, no. I was...
I was up late, writing.
We still have a deal, right? Come on in.
It's your house too.
Oh, I love this room.
It's perfect.
It was mine as a kid.
Really? Yeah.
Huh. Why aren't you using it?
Oh, I don't know. I guess I
always wanted the other room.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God. I love this book.
I used to read this
to my nephew all the time,
until one of his brat friends told
him that Veronica wasn't real.
Well, it's hard to keep kids
believing in imaginary things.
No way. This is you.
You're the Nora Clark?
[ Laughs ] Oh, my God.
I can't tell you
how much I love your books.
I've bought them and read them.
I give them as gifts.
- Well, I'm just starting the next one.
- You gotta be kidding me.
You're gonna be creating Veronica's next
adventure right here in front of me?
Well, if I can find
some inspiration.
I'll inspire you.
After high school, I, uh...
I got lost for a while.
I was my own worst enemy.
And then, uh, one day I decided to
grow up and take control of my life.
Simple as that.
I enrolled in the academy.
And I realized it doesn't get
more charming than Idyllwild.
[ Laughs ]
Okay, your turn.
Well, at some point...
I realized that I prefer the kind of
isolation you can only find in a big city.
I went to UCLA.
And then I drifted for a while
until I landed in Santa Barbara.
Where Veronica lives. Sure.
It's a little bit
of art imitating life,
except I lived in a house
in the woods without my parents.
Yeah. Uh, you, um...
You're not married?
Not even close. You?
I was. No kids though,
thankfully.
That bad?
Uh, when you're young,
you're never old enough.
Yeah. And then when you're old...
Well, you know how it goes.
Are you calling me old?
N-No. No. No.
Uh, I mean, uh...
It's fine. We don't
have to talk about it.
I had an affair.
Uh, the marriage was
over already, but... Oh.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean
to get so personal.
I just, um...
I wanted to be honest.
It's fine. Really.
Well, I'm just happy
the past is in the past.
So am I.
My roommate's here. Gotta go.
Why don't you come up to the house?
I'll make dinner.
Great. Cool.
Hey.
Hey. Who is that?
Um... He's hot.
Will I be running into him sneaking out
of your bedroom one of these days,
preferably wearing only a towel?
[ Laughs ]
So I got you a little something
for letting me move in.
No. Do you remember that
shirt that I was wearing...
that you said you love but you could
never pull off? Well, you totally can.
Really? Yeah.
It was just something
I grabbed on sale.
It's just like mine. We just
can't wear them on the same day.
We have got to stop running
into each other like this.
I saw you catching up with Jack.
I didn't want to intrude.
Well, that was
very considerate of you.
So, how is the trip
down memory lane?
I don't understand why people
want to live in the past,
especially when the future
can be so bright.
[ Laughs ] I promise I'm gonna
make a fair offer on the house.
Generous even.
I don't want to sell, Kelly.
Don't let ancient feelings
cloud your judgment, Nora.
Jack is...
He's not worth
sticking around for.
Take it from someone who knows.
I'll be expecting your call.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Chuckles ]
Who was that thing?
My nemesis. At least that's what
she was all through high school.
[ Exhales ] Are you okay?
Yep, I'm fine.
[ Thunderclap ]
[ Rain Falling ]
[ Wind Chimes Chiming ]
[ Wind Chimes Continue ]
[ Exhales ]
[ Door Closes ]
[ Shutter Clicks ]
[ Shutter Clicks ]
This is Sputnik.
What's a Sputnik? It's, um...
It's like a 3-D camera.
Hmm. It has two lenses. So
when I release the shutter,
it takes two photographs of
the same subject simultaneously.
But because the lenses are apart just so,
the pictures are slightly different.
And that replicates
the way we see...
with our eyes apart just so?
Yeah. [ Chuckles ]
Do you wanna see some pictures
I've taken with it? Sure.
[ Nora ] You're good.
No, don't say that until you've
actually seen it in 3-D.
Okay. Um... Oh,
I forgot my viewer.
But you know those Magic Eye things?
Sure.
Same principle. So you just lean
in and focus on your index finger.
Now, in a second I'm gonna
tell you to drop your finger,
but you have to maintain
focus on where it was,
and a third picture will appear
between the two you're looking at.
Are you ready for some magic?
Yes.
Okay. One,
two, three.
That is so, so cool. Right?
[ Chuckles ] It takes some
getting used to, but...
I have a proposition.
- What kind?
- Well, the new book needs to be more grown-up.
Like a coming-of-age story?
Exactly.
What if you did
3-D photography for the book?
M-Me?
Why not you?
You can't be serious.
You're serious?
Okay, okay. First of all, I can
barely contain my excitement.
But are you... are you sure?
I'm just a student.
No, this is not
the work of a student.
Are you asking me this just 'cause I'm
your roommate? No. No, not at all.
Okay, boss.
Count me in.
Oh... [ Chuckles ]
[ No Audible Dialogue ] [ Man
] The messenger's old

You like chicken soup?
I love it.
Will you get some chicken stock?
That's what I'm here for.

Nora? Yeah.
Nora.
Eddie. Nora.
Oh, my goodness. [ Laughs ]
[ Laughs ]
Holy cow.
I didn't know you were here.
Well, Grandma left me the house.
Oh.
Of course, of course.
[ Chuckles ]
We had such a great
companionship.
Me and Dorothy,
we... we had so much fun.
And then, uh...
Me too.
What... What was that name
I used to call you?
I can't remember.
Just a second. Uh...
Um... Oh, my mind doesn't
work so good anymore. Uh...
Uh... I can't remember.
Uh... Well, listen.
You look great.
Thanks. I'm really happy
you're back here.
Enchant. [ Laughs ] Enchant.
And I still make the best
hot chocolate in town.
So don't you be a stranger.
Of course. [ Kisses
] Great to see ya.
Bye-bye. Bye.
[ Chuckles ]
God, do you know everyone in this town?
[ Laughs ]
That was my grandma's boyfriend.
I didn't even think
he still lived here.
I'll catch up with you in a sec.
Okay.
The other day you asked how the
trip down memory lane was going.
Uh-huh? That's a trope.
A trope? Yeah. Trope?
Clich.
Something people say when they don't
have anything important to say.
I'm not sure I get your meaning.
How could you?
You are a clich, a walking one.
The house is not for sale,
so leave Nora alone,
or I will wrap that scarf
around your neck...
until your face is
as bleached as your hair.
[ Knocking ]
Hey. I just wanted to find out what
time Jack's coming over tonight.
Actually, we changed the plans.
We're going out for dinner now.
Oh.
Just because we still have
a lot of catching up to do.
You're afraid I might
steal him from you?
[ Laughing ]
Totally kidding. You should go out.
Have a good time.
You should wear that purple shirt
I got you. It'll drive him crazy.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Jack ] Can you believe when we were kids
everything important happened right here?
[ Chuckles ]
There's nothing more confused...
than a teenage girl living
with an overbearing grandmother.
Really? She always
seemed so sweet.
She was very protective.
Uh, this... this is
gonna sound stupid,
but, um, I had a whole camping
trip planned for after graduation.
I hate camping. I know.
[ Laughs ] I need down comforters,
running water and blow dryers.
I was broke, and I figured it was the
cheapest way to get out of here.
I was gonna surprise you
with flowers,
a magnificent box of wine
from my parents' collection...
[ Laughs ] and just see what
it would be like to be us.
And I never let you.
You know, the good news is, I
have a little bit more money now.
So no camping.
Hmm.
I hope you didn't mind that.
Part of me did, but the other
part wants another one.
[ Man ] Hey
The streetlights

[ Door Closes ] Ah!
Are you okay? Yeah, I'm fine.
This is what I get for thinking I can outsmart
whatever creature is squatting in our shed.
I cut my hand on a rusty hook.
Here. Come on.
Ah! Hey. You might
need a tetanus shot.
Yeah. No, thanks.
I'll pass on that.
I'll wait till my arm freezes
up, and they can amputate.
[ Laughing ]
Ah! Hold still.
[ Inhales ] There.
[ Laughing ]
Is that what that noise
was last night?
I could've sworn it was coming
from your room. Maybe it was.
What?
I'm prone to sleepwalking,
so it's possible...
that I just dreamed there was a squirrel
in the shed, and it was me all along.
That's... creepy.
[ Laughing ] I know.
[ Car Horn Honks ]
[ Engine Idling ]
It's Jack.
Oh. Did you two
hook up last night?
Should I be jealous?
Why don't you bandage your hand properly,
and then you can come and meet him?
Why? Are you afraid he
might think I'm dangerous?
Only to yourself.
Go on. You only get one shot
at a first impression.
[ Knocking ]
I was on patrol.
Just thought I'd, uh, stop by to tell
you how much I enjoyed last night.
I'm glad you did. Come in.
Uh, everything okay?
Yeah.
Hey, do you remember
Kelly Lewis?
Yeah. She hasn't stopped bugging me about
selling the house since I got here.
You've seen her? Yeah, twice.
Why? Her husband reported
her missing this morning.
She didn't come home last night.
Oh.
Might be nothing,
but I'm still concerned.
I can't file a missing persons
report for at least 48 hours.
And it's no secret
that they had some problems.
The whole town knows?
Um, it was years ago, Nora.
[ Groans ]
[ Creaking ]
Is there someone here?
Uh, Peyton?
Oh. Can you stay for a bit?
I'd like you to meet her. I
have to go see Kelly's husband.
Her being missing is kind of headline
news in this sleepy little town.
Next time? Sure.
If you need anything, anything at
all, just call me. Okay. Thanks.
Where is he going? Back to work.
Oh. Kelly Lewis is missing.
Who's Kelly Lewis?
The Realtor.
The fake blonde?
Oh, right.
What is that doing here?
Oh, it's cute, isn't it?
Yeah, I found it in my room.
You mean my room.
Did you make it?
Put it down.
I'm sorry. I can clean that up.
No.
I'll deal with it.
[ Door Closes ]
Don't move. [ Gasps ] Oh.
I told you not to move.
What are you doing?
I love everything
about you right now...
except...
[ Sniffles ]
I want you to follow me.
Trust me.
I want you to have a seat.
Oh, no, I don't like... Shh!
This is my way of apologizing.
I want you to relax.
Like you, I didn't have
a lot of friends growing up.
I was always looking for that one special
someone that I could really connect with.
I tried to kill myself.
When I was in college,
I dated a lot of guys.
I guess you could say
I had a reputation.
But there was this one guy that wasn't
anything like the other jerks I dated.
He was a computer whiz.
[ Chuckles ]
[ Laughing ]
Can you get nerdier than that?
It turns out he wasn't anything
like the other guys. He was...
He was worse.
I don't even remember
it happening.
One minute I was eating dinner,
and the next... I woke up,
half-dressed and...
I punched him so hard, I left him
with one hell of a black eye.
Did you tell anybody?
No.
No.
But... I planned my revenge.
I actually planned to kill him.
I knew exactly
how I would do it,
where I would do it.
The look on his face
as the life drained out of him.
He died three weeks later
in a terrible car crash,
almost like
I willed it to happen.
And you know
how screwed up I am?
I actually felt guilty, like I
was responsible for his death...
just because I wanted him dead.
And then I convinced myself
that I was guilty...
and that I deserved
to die for it.
[ Shutter Clicks ]
It's gonna be beautiful.
[ Sighs ]
I hate pictures of myself.
I think it's narcissistic
to like a picture of yourself.
You're beautiful.
[ Footsteps Approaching ]
You know, about earlier,
I've never been
with another woman.
Yeah, neither have I. I just
got caught up in the moment.
Oh. Because I...
You had your night out.
It's my turn now.
Don't wait up.

Hello? Nora, it's Dr. Barnes.
Hi, Doctor.
You missed your last appointment, so I
thought I'd call. How's everything?
Everything's fine.
We've been speaking
for a long time...
and I have never known you to be
a fan of life being just fine.
Oh, I think
I can live with fine.
Is there something
you're not telling me?
[ Nora Sighs ]
Do you remember a guy I was
telling you about... Jack?
Remember?
From high school?
He and I have reconnected. So maybe it's
the time I've been spending with him...
or spending thinking about him.
Or maybe it's the time I've been
spending staring at the wall...
trying to write.
Sometimes it feels
like they stare back at me.
Well, perhaps you should spend
some more time out of the house.
Peyton keeps saying
the same thing.
I'm sorry. Peyton?
Uh, my new roommate.
I didn't know
you had a roommate.
Well, it wasn't something I planned.
It just kind of worked itself out.
I'm starting to have
second thoughts.
Second thoughts?
Nora?
Nora, what's going on?
Uh, I gotta go.
I'll... I'll call you next week.
[ Sighs ]
What's on your mind? I'm
confused about last night.
I'm not.
[ Sighs ]
[ Typing ]
[ Typing Continues ]
You have to face
the truth, Nora.
[ Typing Continues ]
[ Typing Stops ]
[ Sighs ] Look at
what you made me do.
What?
[ Scoffs ] What was so important that
you had to interrupt me right now?
You've been writing all day. I
know you're just avoiding me.
No, I'm writing all day
because I have a deadline.
Deadline or not, you still
have to eat, right?
So how about I order
some takeout?
I'm going out. [ Typing ]
[ Typing Continues ]

[ Door Alarm Stops ]
You're such a gentleman.
Thank you.
And thank you for yet another lovely
evening. I should be thanking you.
[ Chuckles ] That was a blast.
I didn't know you
could dance like that.
Well, I'm not the same girl
you knew way back when.
I believe that. You
want to come up?
Uh, are you sure?
Mmm, 50%.
I want you to be 100%.
Take it or leave it.
[ Woman ] Why did you go?
[ Chuckles ]
Why did you
Turn
Away from me?
When all the world
Seemed to sing
Why, why did you go?
Was it me?
Was it you?
Questions in a world
Of blue
Okay, so what'd you find?
The license plate is
a match for Kelly's car.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Uh, Kelly had made
any calls from her cell?
Men can barely
tell the difference.
You're lucky you
stayed for the bacon.
Okay.
I'm leaving now.
I'll be there in 20.
[ Sighs ]
Uh. I'm so sorry. I have to go.
Last night was...
Whatever you're about to say,
I think the same thing.
I'll call you later.
Mm-hmm.
[ Door Opens, Closes ]
Peyton, open up.
I'm not in the mood.
What the hell was that?
I was bored.
[ Typing ]
[ Rhythmic Knocking ]
Hey. Hey.
How you doing?
I'm good. I'm fine. How are you?
Oh, I'm doing great.
I do... Wow. My...
The place looks great.
Oh, thanks.
Look at this.
So many memories.
She used to rock you
in this chair so much.
Ah, my goodness.
Huh.
What are you doing here?
Like-Like... You invited me.
No, I didn't.
I-I thought that you...
I thought that you called me.
Ah, sometimes I get confused,
you know? Uh...
we could just catch up.
You know as much as
your grandma meant to me and...
Yeah. [ Exhales ]
This is not a very good time.
Oh.
I really could...
use one of those long walks
we used to take. Yeah.
I just got
a lot of writing to do.
But... Oh, of course.
The famous writer.
You need your space. [ Laughs ]
I, uh...
We'll do it another time.
Good-bye, Popsicle.
[ Gasps, Panting ]
[ Gasps, Sobbing ]
[ Sobbing Continues ]
[ Peyton ] You okay?
I haven't seen this photo
in 20 years.
My mother and I
used to play this game.
I would whisper really
bad things into her ear...
and then they didn't
seem so scary.
And he would take me
into the woods.
We'd walk past the clearing...
until we reached the stone.
He'd tell me these stories.
He'd help me build
my Popsicle stick house.
[ Eddie ] John Jacob...
Huh? Try it.
[ Together ] John Jacob
Jingleheimer Schmidt
His name was my name too
He told me how he used to... help his
daughter build models and how she hated it.
[ No Audible Dialogue ]
That was when he first
told me about his daughter.
About how she drowned
in the ocean.
He'd make me wear her sweater.
He'd... talk for a while...
and then look at me...
for what seemed like hours.
[ Inhales ] I would run
as fast as I could...
back through the woods.
My grandmother would be inside.
I'd look at her
desperate for help.
But it was like
she wasn't even there.
[ Eddie ] Let me see your face.
You look sad, Popsicle.
Please?
I wish I could forget everything
that I remembered.
[ Sniffles ]
Hey. How are you feeling?
Better. Good.
You want some breakfast?
I'm not hungry. Thanks.
Yeah. I understand.
But if there's anything
you do want, just ask.
I'm... I'm here for you.
Whatever you need.
I appreciate that.
I'll always be here.
And if you need me to go to the police
station with you too, I... I can do that.
I'm not going
to the police station.
So you're just gonna tell Jack?
I don't think so. I don't know.
[ Sighs ] Nora.
Please don't tell me you're just gonna
let this bastard get off scot-free.
He deserves to pay
for what he did to you.
I need some time to think.
Yeah. I get it. You know.
Remember, I've been there.
I know.
And as I recall,
you didn't tell anybody.
And that was a mistake.
So don't make the same one.
This isn't the same thing.
It's exactly the same thing!
Back off, Peyton.
Go call your shrink.
Maybe she can talk
some sense into you.
[ Door Closes ]
[ Dr. Barnes ] Nora.
You have missed
three appointments.
I cannot stress how important
these calls are.
Sorry. I lost track of time.
Why? What's going on?
Uh, I've never been better.
How so?
Jack and I... we're together.
Well, you might be
moving too fast.
Nora?
Nora, are you there? Yeah. Sorry, Doctor.
I got to go. Peyton just walked in.
What are you not telling me?
I don't need to
tell you everything.
I can only help you if you tell
me what's happening in your life.
I can't do a session right now.
I finally broke through
the wall in my writing.
I figured out who
Veronica's best friend is.
Listen, Nora, I have a sister
who lives in Palm Springs...
and I was thinking
of paying her a visit.
I'd like to stop in
and see you on my way there.
No, no. That's not necessary.
Really.
We'll talk later.
[ Peyton ] You found out who
Veronica's best friend is?
Yeah.
I'm so sorry...
for being pushy.
I was making your situation
about me and that isn't fair.
No, it wasn't.
I'll support whatever
decision you make.
Can I ask you something?
What was that thing with
Jack the other day?
[ Sighs ]
That was a joke.
It was out of line.
I'm sorry about that too.
It wasn't a funny joke. I know.
Sometimes when I'm angry,
I do stupid things.
But you have to believe me when I tell
you that I would do anything for you.
Your grandmother is gone,
and he can't hurt you anymore.
You're safe. Okay?
No more bad dreams.
[ Woman ] Nightingale
He flew to me
And told me
That it found my love
He said one day
I'll meet you
Our hearts will fly
With the nightingale
What are you doing in my room?
You tell me. What are you
doing with Kelly's scarf?
I needed it. I was cold...
after I wrapped it around her
neck and choked her to death.
You...
Wait. [ Laughs ]
Come on, Nora.
Is that what you think of me?
I saw her in town leaving her office.
[ Sighs ]
I wanted to confront her,
but I didn't.
The scarf fell out of her bag
and so I brought it back.
I thought maybe
you'd like to burn it.
That's sick.
Do you want to know what's sick?
Seeing that scumbag Eddie
in town just working,
breathing the same air
we're breathing,
acting like he doesn't
have a care in the world.
You want him out there?
Of course not.
Well, have you told Jack yet?
Jack? Yeah, Jack.
How do you know Jack?
Jack. Handsome.
Looks good in a suit.
Slept in your bed
the other night.
How do you know him?
[ Chuckles ] What kind
of question is that?
I saw you together at the caf.
I don't know what you saw,
but it wasn't me.
Are you jealous?
You think I want Jack?
I think you want me.
Is this your way
of getting back at us...
by making me doubt him?
If you don't trust Jack,
that's between you and him.
So don't bring me into it.
Because I've done nothing
but help you.
Stop it!
Stop.
I can't listen to this anymore.

[ Rings ]
Hey, Dr. Barnes.
This is Peyton.
I think Nora needs your help.
Hey.
Hey. Nora, what are
you doing here?
Uh, I'm sorry I haven't called
in the last couple of days.
That's not why I'm here. Uh, I have
something that belongs to Kelly.
I just thought
I should bring it to you.
Okay. Uh, where'd you get this?
Um, Peyton found it outside Kelly's office.
How long has she had it?
Since the night
Kelly disappeared.
What do you mean since the
night she disappeared?
Well, that's what she told me.
Okay. Okay.
I'm glad you brought it to me. It might
help us build a case against her husband.
Her husband? We don't
have anything solid yet,
but, uh, she'd started
divorce proceedings.
They're in some serious debt.
At some point, I'll need to collect your
fingerprints as well as Peyton's...
just to officially rule you both
out in case it is foul play.
And I'll need Peyton to come down
and give an official statement.
If you have so little to go on,
why start with the husband?
You always start
with the husband.
Okay. Or is this just your way of
getting him out of the picture?
What picture?
Of you and Kelly.
Nora, I told you
that was years ago.
But I really don't
appreciate the accusation.
What about Peyton? You don't
suspect she's involved?
I haven't ruled anyone out yet. That's why
I'll need her fingerprints and statement.
Is there something
you're not telling me?
Nora, look. You've got a lot
on your plate right now, okay?
I appreciate you bringing this down,
but don't worry. I'll do my job.
And if you change your mind about
pressing charges, you just let me know.
Charges?
Against Eddie.
I told Peyton I didn't
want anybody else to know.
You can trust me.
Nora, I won't take action without your
permission, as much as I would like to.
I'm sick and tired of people
messing around in my private life.
Messing around?
Dr. Barnes is bad enough.
You and Peyton need to back off!
I'm gonna deal with this myself!

Hello. Sheriff's office.
Dr. Barnes available?
It's Jack Tresler
with the sheriff's department.
If you could have her call me. Uh, I sent her
an e-mail too. She should have my number.
Ooh. Hey, guys.
Jack.
I wish I had a choice not
to see what's in there.
Thanks.

You should have never
flushed those pills.
Who did this?
How dare you call me crazy.
I'm not the one who brought those
filthy things into our house.
But he deserved paying for it.
And you know it.
He did.
Which is why I'm going to keep
what you did a secret.
This is not how you keep a secret!
You're trying to frame me!
You can't frame someone that
actually committed the crime.
[ Sobbing ] What do
you want from me?
What I've always wanted.
To be a part of your life
for the rest of your life.
I wouldn't do that.
[ Exhales ] Nora.
You'll lose.
Should never have come back here.

Hey. It's me. I'm heading
over to your place.
I hope everything's okay.
[ Peyton ] Popsicle.

Ohh.
Ohh.
Peyton?
Peyton, where are you?
I'll always be here.
[ Nora Grunting ]
[ Panting ]
Dr. Barnes?
Dr. Barnes?
[ Nora ] Dr. Barnes?
Doctor, wake up.
Wake up.
Popsicle.
It's time to face
the truth, Nora.
You have to stop.
I haven't done anything.
No!
You tried to kill Dr. Barnes!
No, Nora, that was you.
Nora. [ Grunting ]
You need help. [ Siren Blaring ]
Nora. Nora, you're sick.
You need help.
If that was me...
Listen. Listen to me.
You didn't mean to hurt Dr. Barnes.
You were confused. Listen to me.
[ Jack ] Nora, are you okay?
Listen. Listen.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Nora, are you here?
Nora, are you okay?
Okay. [ Exhales ]
I will take care of you. Always.
Okay?
Here.
Here.
Oh.
Trust me.
Sheriff's department.
[ Mumbles ] Shh.
Shh.
You're okay.
You're okay.
[ Jack ] Nora, are you okay?
In here, Jack.
[ Jack ] What's going on, Nora?
Did you catch her?
She left the front door open.
I think she ran away because she
knows that you know about Eddie.
Yeah. Yeah, we got her.
Don't make me see her
again, okay, Jack?
Promise me?
I really don't want
to see her again.
Don't worry. She's-She's
gone away for a long time.
Do you think
she killed Kelly too?
No. No. I spoke to
Kelly earlier today.
Yeah. She had to
leave town abruptly.
It was a big misunderstanding.
Well, that's a relief.
Whose car is that
in the driveway?
Dr. Barnes.
She's here?
I think Peyton might
have hurt her too.
Do you know where she is?
Dr. Barnes?
Dr. Barnes, can you hear me?
[ Woman Vocalizing ]
