Elijah Peel (2026) Movie Script
1
[man, on radio] This is KWNW-FM
in HD,
Crawfordsville, Memphis,
Star Media radio station.
Good morning, Memphis.
Waking up to the song
that launched Elijah Peel
to superstar status.
Playing tonight at the
Coliseum, here's Elijah Peel.
-Aah!
-"Can You Feel It?"
Whoa!
[Yelling]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
[Singing along with radio]
Driving in my car,
she slides next to me
Next to me
[Eli, in British accent]
Call you later, Rock.
Puts her hand up on my leg
Shows me where
her interest be
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
Stop calling, Rock!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Paparazzi?
Are you kidding me?
Maggots!
[Mumbling]
Can you feel it?
Wake up! Come on.
They can't see me like this.
We're going around the back.
Alright?
Can you feel it?
Bloody paparazzi!
Filthy, dirty maggots!
-[Crowd yelling]
-No, he's not here.
He's not here.
He's not here.
Hey.
What? What are you doing?
[Echoing] Take you in
to the dark of night...
We've got a sound check
coming up for the show tonight.
I got three limos coming.
I got a police escort coming.
Can you feel it?
We got to get there right now.
Bro, just open the door.
Here, he's probably sleeping.
I'll wake him up. Okay?
Can you feel it?
Just call him.
What do you want, Rock?
What do you want?
Why are you calling me
a thousand damn times, huh?
-What?
-Want the door open?
No. Rock,
will you please stop?!
I'll call you when I'm ready.
How about that? Bye.
[female reporter] Elijah Peel's
bringing his big act to town,
and that means big trouble.
Found your way back home
[reporter, on TV] Last time
Peel checked into Nashville,
he checked out
with a $75,000 bill.
[automated voice] This is
Elijah Peel's elevator.
Welcome. I hope you're having
a nice day.
[reporter] Meanwhile...
Just get my name
out your stupid mouth.
There's no escaping anything.
There's no escape!
Ain't you got
nothing better to do?
You're nothing without me.
[automated voice]
And here we are. Ding!
Oh, oh, oh,
can you feel it?
One, two, three, four!
I think it's time.
[Knock on door]
Eli.
Eli! Come on.
Alright, look.
I'm coming in.
[Song stops abruptly]
How's my bum look
in these pants, bro?
Come on, Eli.
You-- You promised me.
We gotta go, Eli. The limo's
gonna leave without us.
You're gonna go without me?
[Laughs]
Where are you gonna go?
Yeah, tell me.
Tell me, Rock.
Where are you going?
That sound check alone
is gonna be streaming
to over ten million homes.
And if we're late, we are done.
-It's in the contract.
-[Cellphone rings]
We'll be down in one minute.
"This is in the contract."
-I don't have time for this.
-Go get it.
I'm not gonna sit here
and watch you kill yourself
in your own fricking house,
Elvis.
I put way too much work
into this.
I'll get your pants.
[Sniffs] Alright.
Okay.
Alright.
Try these pants on, sexy boy.
We gotta go.
Eli, come on!
Where is it?
Give it to me!
Get your hands off me,
you whacked-out jerk!
[Laughing]
Come on, give it to me, Rock.
Give it to me.
Give it to me
and we go right now.
No, I don't care if
you want to destroy your life,
but I'm not gonna contribute
to it any longer.
I'm not giving it to you!
Give it to me right now
and we can leave.
Come on, Rock.
Come on, Rock.
Just give it to me now!
Give us the bag
and we'll leave right now.
-Right now.
-Here. Fine. Take it.
[Scoffs] I'm out of here.
If you're not down there
in exactly five minutes,
we're leaving without you.
[Crowd yelling]
I'm sorry. Sorry, sorry.
He went out the back door.
He's in a really good mood.
[woman] How do you get
to the back door?
If he's not here
in five minutes, leave.
[woman] Can I come in? Elijah?
[Sighs]
I'm too old for this.
Where are my pants?!
[Retching]
One, two,
one, two, three, four
[Crowd screaming]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
[Rock] Right.
Almost there, buddy.
You got an interview
set up in the green room.
They'll have the cameras rolling
when we pull up.
We're gonna rock the house.
-We're gonna rock the house.
-[Rock] Okay?
I'm gonna walk you
through the crowd.
-Gonna rock the house.
-[Rock] You look like hell, bro.
You got powder all over
your face like a damn baby.
I gotta wipe you like a child.
-[Bell tolling]
-[woman] Eli, wake up.
We're here.
Driver, you have to
get by these fans.
Find a way.
Just-- Just find a way.
[Fans screaming]
Eli, Eli, listen. Listen to me,
alright? I'm gonna get out.
I'm gonna see
if I can control this madness.
When I get out, I want you
to duck down.
Alright? Duck down.
And lock the door, please.
Rock the house.
-This is off the record, okay?
-Rock the house!
He is sick as a dog.
He's got a 102 fever. Alright?
[Laughs]
He's not gonna be
able to make the show.
He wasn't gonna make it.
He wanted to do it.
[Breathing heavily]
I didn't want him to come
to the show,
but he said, "Hey,
I love my fans too much.
I don't want
to disappoint my fans."
But I promise you, I'll give
you an interview after the show.
-You promise?
-I promise. [Indistinct]
Alright? Alright.
Exclusive for sure.
Hey, hey, it's showtime, buddy.
Time to earn your money.
Let's go, stud.
Here, put this on.
Cover your head. Come on.
Don't talk to a soul.
-Ready? Come on.
-[Crowd screaming]
Come on.
You're doing fine. You're doing
great. We're almost there.
[Rhythmic clapping]
[Cheers and applause]
Eli!
Hey! Get a medical team
in here right now!
Now! Where are the meds?!
Get 'em in here!
He can't breathe!
Eli, come on!
Come on, buddy.
Eli!
[Siren wailing]
[doctor] Okay. Cocaine overdose.
What can you tell me?
-What's his pulse?
Do we have two
wide bore IVs set up?
We're working on that.
-Who is this guy, anyway?
-Mr. Peel.
-[doctor] Who?
-Elijah...
Okay.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
[Sighs]
[Monitor beeping]
I need a drink.
[Exhales slowly]
Where am I?
[Rock] You're in the ICU, Eli.
Day two.
Don't-- Don't you remember?
-ICU.
-Yeah.
Oh,
you must be my lucky nurse.
Hello, sweetheart.
Oh, well, all of a sudden,
he talks.
Don't "sweetheart" me.
And please, sir. Out!
This is intensive care,
not a listening party.
Okay. Hey...
I'll see you in the morning.
Get some rest.
Yeah.
[Sighs]
Great work.
I might just have to hire you
to be my personal bodyguard.
You got the right disposition.
-Not to mention the figure.
-I'm sorry.
I was trying to figure out
what shot to give you.
Morphine or strychnine?
What was that you said?
[Breathes deeply]
Just, uh...
What a lovely job you're doing.
Yeah,
that's what I thought you said.
Now, get some rest.
[Echoing]
Good night, Mr. Peel.
[Monitor beeping]
Hello, young lady.
Hello, Elijah Peel.
For a second there,
I thought I was looking at
a miniature Curly
from the Stooges.
Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,
"soitainly."
Yeah.
You're too young to know that.
I watched a lot of reruns.
My name is Jessica.
What happened to you?
Well, I guess I had a heart
attack on the way to my show.
Quite rude, actually.
Yeah, I heard about it
on "Inside Edition."
Huh. They need to get a life.
They say you were
self-destructive.
Did they, now?
They said
you live life on the edge,
that you were trying
to kill yourself.
Too many girls,
too much partying.
Right.
Well, you know what I think?
I think someone's been watching
a bit too much telly.
I like your music.
Though, your last album was
a little out there.
You should go back
to your old stuff.
Right. I'll put you in touch
with the label, then.
[Sighs]
What happened to your hair?
Cancer. It'll grow back.
Okay, young lady.
Now it's really time to go.
Must you run everyone
out of here all the time?
I quite like people.
It helps me.
Besides, you know, she's...
Well, she's interesting
at least.
Well, I am interesting.
But you might not think
I'm so nice
in a few days
after I give you an earful.
Give us a few.
I'll be on my best behavior,
I promise.
-Just five minutes.
-[Sighs]
Got to quash this little girl's
delusional state.
Five minutes.
Poor thing's mental, she is.
Alright, give it to us.
I'm listening.
You don't think
Jesus loves you.
Jesus.
Why you got
to bring him into it?
Jesus is in everything,
I think.
Yeah, well, maybe that's
where you and I differ.
See? Look at the both of us.
Look where we are.
Maybe this is
where we're supposed to be.
That's just lazy, a cop-out.
I mean, what good is it
that we're here, huh?
In this place, of all places.
Looks like you got
yourself here.
Well, if he was God,
he'd change my will.
Make me different.
But he didn't, so this is
where we're supposed to be.
[Eli chuckles]
[Monitor beeping]
And why'd you say that?
Why'd you say that?
Why'd you say that?
Because if you truly
knew Jesus loves you,
then you wouldn't
purposely try to die.
Hey! Get back here!
I'm not done talking to you.
You can't just say that
and walk out!
Nurse! Nurse!
Bring her back here right now!
-[Rock] Whoa, oh, Eli.
-Hey!
Hey, hey
you gotta chill, man.
I mean, who the hell
are you talking to anyway?
That little bald girl.
Didn't you see her?
Bald? What? No.
-Listen, she's a patient here.
Go get her.
I'm not done talking to her.
No, you can't talk to anybody
right now, okay?
You're in recovery.
They told me that if you get
too excited, you could die.
Well, I don't care.
Go get her.
Find the nurse.
Bring her back here.
Well,
good morning to you, too.
-Please, Rock. Please.
-Alright. Fine. I'll go get her.
Good morning, sweetie.
Hi, Mommy.
So, the nurse told me
that you went on a walkabout
while I was out.
-How was it?
-It was fine.
But I just met Elijah Peel.
He's here, you know?
The Elijah P--
Like, the rock-star guy?
Yeah, I saw him.
He had a heart attack.
Oh, no. He's so young.
Too many girls
and too much partying.
-Where did you hear that?
-"Inside Edition."
Eli said
they need to get a life.
Oh, Eli. Huh?
He's probably right.
[Rock] Well, he is right.
Good morning.
I'm-- I'm Rock Diamond.
Elijah Peel's manager.
Uh, may I come in?
Thank you.
And you--
You must be Jessica.
And then you're her sister?
Something like that.
I'm Maria.
-Mom.
-Pleasure, Maria.
Nice to meet you.
And I hope I'm not interrupting
you two sisters, but, uh...
Well, Eli, he asked me
to get in contact with you,
and I've gotten a lot of girls'
phone numbers in the past,
but never one quite like this.
Um, he just really wants
to stay in touch with her,
and he's really adamant
about it.
And he's not as bad
as they make him out to be.
Trust me,
I have known him forever,
and, uh, well, he just--
he just loves kids, you know?
Can you please
give this to him?
Sure.
It's kind of private.
Okay.
Oh. Excuse me. No offense.
I-I need to read this
before anybody gives
anything to anybody.
Um... okay, Maria and Jessica.
So, what do you say?
Um, do I get your blessing
to have Eli and her talk?
I guess.
-I don't see any harm.
-Yay!
But you tell him
he better straighten up his act.
Yeah, right.
Like he listens to me.
Okay, young lady, I'm sure
I'll be seeing you again.
It was a pleasure
meeting both of you.
Oh, um...
If you need anything at all,
here's my card.
Cell number's right there.
Don't-- Don't hesitate.
See you later, Jessica.
[Giggles]
-Rock, we all got sick.
-Delivery for Elijah Peel.
No. That can't be right.
That's not all for me.
Yes, it is.
I'm a big fan, by the way.
One of those letters is from me.
[Chuckles]
You gotta be kidding me.
Unbelievable.
Hey, look, um, that Jessica girl
you want me to track down?
-She wanted me to give you this.
-Oh.
And her mom said it's okay
if the two of you keep in touch.
This girl is incredible.
Hey, what room is she in?
I want to see her later.
You're not gonna
see anybody.
You got to rest.
You just flatlined
three days ago.
Will you look at
the bloody time?
-Hey, Rock.
-What?
-Can you do me a favor?
-No.
Would you mind taking that
with you when you go?
-No. It's all yours.
-Bro, come on.
Hey, Rock.
-What?
-What room is she in?
Come on.
[Telephone ringing]
Hello?
[Eli] I got your letter,
and I must say, I'm touched.
So thank you... I think.
Hi, Elijah Peel.
You're welcome.
How do you feel?
-Also, it's not true, you know?
-What's not true?
What you said about me
the other night.
-Trying to die and all that.
-I didn't say it.
The TV said it.
Everyone says it.
They say you have
a death wish.
You know, girls,
drugs and rock 'n' roll.
Just so you know,
that's just a bunch of bull...
oney.
You could have fooled me.
Well,
I don't think anyone fools you.
-What's for lunch?
-Huh?
I got a lot of pull here.
What are they giving you
for lunch today?
[Sighs] Hell if I kn--
I mean...
[Clears throat]
I-I don't know.
I don't know.
And frankly, I don't care.
I think they got me
on some kind of diet, actually.
Bland chicken,
old, mealy fruit.
Yuck.
I get much better food
than that.
I even get ice cream.
Off the phone now.
Ah, the old monitor's back.
Busting my chops again.
I gotta go.
Hey, is you allowed
to stop by later
or is you under maximum
security lockdown as well?
You never know.
-Bye.
-Alright. Bye.
Wouldn't kill you to be nicer.
Good night.
I want to
get out of here, Rock.
I'm going stir crazy
in here, man. Alright?
I can do the same thing
from the comfort of my own bed.
So just do what
you got to do, man.
-Who's there?
-What do you mean?
Not you.
Hey, look who it is.
Come on in.
[Rock] Okay.
-[Eli] Hey, you.
-Well, don't mind me.
Hey, uh,
does your mom know you're here?
Yeah... Uncle Rock.
Now I'm an uncle.
Alright, you two behave.
[Eli] Never.
What you got there?
-Oh!
-I raided the fridge.
I thought you might need
a pick-me-up.
You should be asleep,
young lady.
It's almost midnight.
But seeing as I could
never get mad at a little bit
of rebellion,
that's a job well done!
Alright, let's see.
Well, wait a minute.
You only got one bowl,
one spoon.
I can't eat this whole thing.
All I have is one.
[Sighs] Well, Merry Christmas
to me, then.
Mm.
Mmm.
[Giggling]
That's bloody brilliant.
They've had me eating this bland
chicken and that old fruit.
That is incredible, that is.
I think Edy made
this particular bowl himself.
-[announcement] Dr. Forest,
dial 118, please.
-Mmm.
Dr. Forest.
It's not a he. It's a she.
Yeah. How do you know?
Did you meet him?
-Seen his picture?
-Have you?
I asked you first.
You said Edy.
You didn't say Eddie.
Edy's a girl.
If it was Eddie's ice cream,
then he would be a boy.
Mm.
Point, counter point.
I don't care.
I happen to like girls better.
Really?
You don't act like it.
I can't wait to hear this.
You don't treat women right.
Really? How so?
You treat them like toys.
Slanderous. Toys?
Yeah, toys.
It's like you play with them
and then give them away to,
like, the Salvation Army
or something
when you're finished.
Oh, that is just--
I don't-- No.
First off, you don't even--
you don't even know.
It's not like that.
[Clears throat]
I don't... [Muttering]
You should really start
thinking about settling down.
Seriously.
You're not getting any younger.
Young lady, I am 35, not 65.
I think someone's been watching
a bit too much "Dr. Phil."
And he's canceled, ain't he?
Yeah.
Well, point is, I like girls,
alright?
And I don't treat them
like toys.
I just haven't found
the right one, is all.
Maybe you're looking
in the wrong places.
Yeah, maybe.
Are you done?
Yeah.
Mm, actually, no.
It's about my Instagram post,
isn't it?
I'll have you know, it's all run
by a PR and marketing team.
I have nothing to do with it.
I wouldn't know
what the post was.
It's about the cross tattoos.
Yeah? What about 'em?
Who do you think he is?
Who?
Jesus.
Right.
Well, I try not
to think about that, actually.
And why you always got
talk to me about Jesus?
You know, there's
a whole hospital full of people
for you to go pester.
-But why a cross?
-Yeah.
-'Cause it looks cool?
-You know, it could have been...
It could have been
a multitude of other things.
But why a cross?
Yeah.
I think I'm starting
to get a little tired.
Do you even know
what it means?
Where's my nurse
when I actually need her?
Nurse. Nurse!
Nurse!
-Nurse!
-Do you believe in Jesus?
One bad day, one mess-up
and I'm getting interrogated
by some kid.
Please answer me.
I don't know.
I don't know.
[Sighs]
Anyway, I like you,
but Jesus loves you.
And he'll never leave you.
Yeah, that's what
they all say, isn't it?
You deserve
a great girlfriend, by the way.
I'll keep my eyes open.
Right. You do that!
Hey.
You gotta check out
what's happening outside here.
I mean, somehow word got out
that you're holed up here.
I mean, look at this.
You got camera crews,
there's TV stations, and there's
at least 200 women there, too.
Come on, take a look at this.
Watch.
-No.
[female reporter, on TV]
Elijah Peel is in
a private room
at St. Joe's Hospital
under close
medical supervision.
Hospital administrators
have indicated
that it will be several days
before he is out of the woods.
There is no immediate
prognosis,
just that he is recovering
from treatment.
We'll be giving you
the blow-by-blow
as superstar Elijah Peel
recovers from his horror
at the stage.
-[man] Coming up next...
-Turn the damn thing off.
...a man gets more
than he bargained for
when he falls in love--
I cannot believe you just told
the whole world where I am.
[Crowd screaming outside]
You've got to be kidding me.
Hello. Hi. Yeah.
Here's to all my fans and you,
the pathetic news media.
Oh, you want to see me?
Here you go.
Yeah, here I am. Here!
Take a look! There you go!
Now bugger off!
Trust me, I'm not worth it!
[Rock] Would you get your ass
out of the window?
I can't believe--
Hello, love.
-Sister. Um...
-[Clears throat]
I'm just doing
some morning stretches.
Physical therapy is important,
so...
[nun] I thought
you might like to say a prayer.
Yeah.
Yeah, I would love that.
Please, pray away.
[nun] Oh, Lord Jesus.
Let us pray, as we do,
for the physically
as well as the spiritually sick.
May you guide Mr. Peel
to his calling.
May you keep a watchful eye
upon him
so that he can get well
and get back to his art,
where he can give all glory
to you, o, Father.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
If you don't mind,
I would prefer to remain
in silence during prayer.
Very well. We'll leave Mr. Peel
in quiet prayer
and perhaps less exercise.
I have much work to do.
Here. Let me get that for you.
Thank you.
I'm done.
Yeah, yeah, that prayer
thing was good stuff.
No, Rock. I mean, I'm done.
And I'm just sick, man.
I'm sick. I'm sick.
And I'm out. Okay?
I'm out.
Yeah. Right.
Yeah. I quit.
No, you-- you can't.
I quit, Rock.
-No, I said you can't.
-I just did!
You can't!
Look,
I can't even pray.
Just now.
Not an ounce of anything
in my soul. Nothing!
I have no God.
I don't even know if God exists.
But I live inside my head,
inside these four walls.
And I hate it here.
I hate what I see.
I hate what I feel.
I know this, you don't,
but I do
because I live it every day.
And I am completely alone.
Just a waste of humanity, bruv.
I'm 35 and I just had
a bloody heart attack.
Who has a heart attack at 35?
I mean, I'm sure I gave you
a few as well.
You know, you were just too busy
chasing my sorry ass around
to even notice.
I got...
I gotta do something meaningful,
Rock.
'Cause right now, I am nothing.
And I'm killing myself
trying to be nothing.
It's just like you said,
you know?
You don't just walk away at
the height of your career, Eli.
I mean,
this is what you've want--
We've wanted
for the last 15 years.
You're a hit.
Do you know how hard that is?
Do you know many artists out
there would give their right arm
and their left hand
to have what you have?
You walk away, it's done.
It's over.
It's over.
And plus, in case you forgot,
we owe $5 million to the bank.
What about that?
You don't just walk away
from that, my friend.
-Watch me.
-[Chuckles] Oh, geez.
I'll pay you the five,
I have it.
This is unfreaking
believable.
You know that little girl
just down the way there?
Oh, okay. This was that
Jessica girl, really?
Oh, bugger off, mate,
it's not her.
But, you know,
she showed me something
I've never seen before.
Okay?
I have missed
so much time and opportunity.
I mean, millions of people would
give their right arm to be me.
You said it yourself.
Millions of people.
But here I am, poisoning myself,
a perfectly healthy person.
While someone like her,
who's full of life and spirit,
gets a death sentence
through no fault of their own.
Well, then change.
You're right.
You're thinking right.
But you don't quit your career
because you want to quit
your lifestyle.
[Sighs]
I just don't have it in me
anymore, Rock.
I don't.
I mean,
the whole thing has got to go.
I've got to completely
reinvent myself.
I mean, I've tried to
change before. You've seen it.
But it just-- it just always
ends the same way.
You know? I'm...
I'm sick, man.
I'm sick.
I'm scared to death,
and it's all gotta go.
All of it, man.
I'm sorry. Mr. Peel,
you have to lay down.
Mr. Rock,
I do have to ask you to leave.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm going. I'm leaving.
[Chuckles]
I'll tell you what.
Why don't you pinch me?
Because I think I'm living
some kind of
freaking nightmare here.
Eli, take the time off.
I grant that you need it.
I'm done, mate.
Just accept it.
You, uh...
You should have kept that
little bald girl away from him.
Hey, Rock.
[Rock] Eli.
I'm sorry, mate.
So am I.
I don't know where to go
I don't know what to do
...baby.
I gotta wipe you like a child.
I don't know what to feel
Eli asked me to get in contact.
I've gotten a lot of girls'
phone numbers in the past,
but never one quite like this.
Need a medical team in here
right now!
Now! Where are the meds?!
Get 'em in here!
[Echoing] He can't breathe!
I don't know what to wear
[Sighs] Yeah.
[Monitor beeping]
[Eli] Hey, there, sleepyhead.
Something's new.
Yeah. Me.
I'm new.
A new song?
[Laughs] Real funny.
A new girlfriend?
Oh, a wise guy.
I know.
A new heart.
Yeah. That's right.
A new heart.
Look, um...
I'm leaving, okay?
I'm gonna blow
this Popsicle stand.
But I want you to know
that I will always be in touch.
-Okay?
-Wait. You're leaving AMA?
What the hell is AMA?
-Against medical advice.
-Oh.
-Hospital talk.
-Right.
But where are you
exactly going?
[Sighs] Home, I think.
I don't know.
But I do know
I'm quitting the tour.
What? Why?
[Sighs]
I'm just no good
at being a rock star no more.
You know?
The parties, the girls,
all the attention.
I just don't know how
to handle it properly no more.
And the drugs and drinking.
Don't forget that part.
But can't you change without
having to stop making music?
I don't think so.
I don't know.
All I know
is I can't be this guy anymore.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
I mean, what is that?
I just...
It's not exactly
Nobel Peace Prize
winning material, you know?
Yeah, but it's catchy.
It's got a good beat.
It makes people sing.
What's so bad about that?
What am I doing for humanity?
I don't know. It's...
[Clears throat]
It's-- I don't know.
Like, I can't explain it.
I just can't sing it no more.
Hmm.
Maybe God got ahold of you,
like he got ahold of me
and my dad.
No. No, no, no, no.
I don't think God's
really taking to me right now.
Now you're just being silly.
Listen, my daddy was a writer,
too, but books.
He used to write scary stories,
like horror books.
Then one day,
like, suddenly,
he stopped writing that stuff
and started writing poetry, love
and spiritual short stories.
I don't know.
My mom calls it
spiritual awakening.
A year later, he died of cancer.
I was only six,
but I still remember
how happy he was,
even though he was really,
really sick.
So maybe just don't quit.
Just take a break.
[Sighs]
How did you get to be so...
amazing, so wise?
I pray every day and ask God
questions and he answers me.
I know where I'm going
when I die is a good place.
That's why I'm not scared.
Here I am afraid
of my own shadow.
But, hey, I'm really leaving.
This isn't goodbye.
Just goodbye for now.
Okay? And I wanted to thank you
for everything.
Sweet, sweet girl.
And I want you to know
that I will call you every day.
And you call me.
You got my digits.
A lot of girls want that,
you know?
Love you, kid.
Goodbye, Elijah Peel.
["The Wild Ones"
by The Road playing]
So uptight and so on guard
Picking fights to get along
I wanna shake you,
need to shift to remake you
Oh
What's the rush?
So hasty
Smell the coffee
and taste it
Gotta get out
of those chains
Wrapped so tight,
you can't breathe
Uh-huh
Uh-huh
So I say, hey
-Hey
We are the wild ones
We are the free ones
Exercise our freedom
Eli?
Elijah Peel?
Maria. Okay, I'll talk to you.
Hey.
How's it going?
-Did you get discharged?
Uh, yeah. Kinda.
Well, not exactly, you know.
-No?
-Uh, um...
I was just getting stir crazy
in there honestly.
But apparently, I am AMA, um...
that according to Jessica.
So no worries, by the way.
I spoke with her.
Told her I'd be calling,
visiting and all that.
You will not.
What? Won't what?
Your manager
just cavalierly walks in
and requests that I allow you,
a grown man who I don't know,
but who, like, everybody else
in the planet,
perceives as a drugged-out rock
star free access to my daughter.
No, I thought that he--
You thought what?
I-- Just--
Okay, listen.
Her eyes lit up.
Which is something
that I haven't seen in a year
since this all began.
She's... dying, Mr. Peel.
Dying.
GBM is the most aggressive form
of brain cancer.
-I didn't know.
-She doesn't... [Sighs]
-This disease is brutal.
-Yeah, yeah.
Your manager said
that you love kids.
Yeah. It's like,
"How cute, how sweet.
A rock star that loves kids."
You don't know what love is.
Not until you have had it
ripped away from you.
And now you're facing...
No, I'm sorry, I won't--
I won't come visit.
-I'm sorry. I won't come back.
-No, no --
-No. It's fine.
-I'm not done.
Number one,
you will call or text me
for each and every visit.
-Every.
-Yeah.
And you will treat her
with the most respect
that you've ever mustered
in your entire life ever.
Of course.
I mean,
I promise I will treat her--
I will treat her like
the angel of God that she is.
-I'll tell you one more thing.
-Yeah.
You're gonna get
a lot more out of this
than she ever will.
I already have.
Okay.
You have my permission.
-Just call first.
-Yeah.
Promise.
-Alright.
-Thanks, Maria.
[Eli] Hi. Hey, there.
[Clears throat]
I, uh, am recovering
from a heart attack,
and I would like to hire
a nurse to come care for me
for the next week or so.
[Doorbell rings]
Good morning.
Hi.
I'm here from the service.
Right. Yeah.
I don't know
if you are right for me.
It's not you.
I'm not the right fit for this.
Um, thank you for coming.
Really, truly, I appreciate it.
-Thank you.
-[Stammering]
Well, wait, I-- I--
-[Eli] Good... ness.
-Hi. I'm Rachel. Okay.
Hi. My name is Sarah,
and I'm here with the--
Uh, excuse me.
-Hey, Elijah Peel.
-You got to be joking me.
Wait.
-Hi.
-Another one? Yeah.
What are the odds?
Thank you so much.
To all this running round
and round
I won't let my feet stick
on the ground
So let's give it a go
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Let's give it a go
Oh, oh, oh
Come on! Just a man!
Yes, I'm flying
through the crowds
Hello?
-I've been summoned.
-You're hired.
First things first.
There's cocaine
in every book on the shelf.
[Air hissing]
Huh.
Blood pressure-- 130/95.
It's a little high.
You need to bring that down.
-Arm, please.
-Yeah.
Pulse is slightly fast.
-We need to slow that down.
-[Clears throat]
You are too young to be
in this type of shape, mister.
Yeah. You're telling me.
[Pills rattling]
Here's a Bayer aspirin.
You will need to take that
for the rest of your life.
Now, I've prepared
a heart-healthy breakfast
for you.
I need you to eat it,
rest for an hour,
and then we'll take
a short walk.
Whatever you say.
I'll see you then.
Alright.
Yeah.
I think I'm having
a spiritual awakening.
I just feel completely
different is all.
A bit anxious,
but also a bit of calm as well.
I don't know, it's weird.
-Amazed I'm alive, actually.
-Hmm.
That's just how the Bible
describes our Lord Jesus
and His proactive love and mercy
for those who are lost.
[Chuckles]
Lord God, Jesus.
Proactive mercy, huh?
Yes,
it's in the book of Luke.
It's where Zacchaeus--
He was a sinner
and a tax collector.
Jesus sought him out.
And when Jesus saw him
in that tree,
he went looking for him,
looked all over the place.
[Laughs]
And he found him in his home.
And after that act of grace,
he repented.
And he was transformed.
[Sighs]
Repented and transformed.
That's right.
I have a friend-- Jessica.
You know, she speaks
the same way.
Oh, well,
then she is very wise.
Yeah. She is.
And she's only eight years old.
And dying.
Eight years old...
and dying.
Hmm. [Sighs]
Yeah.
[Soft rock music playing]
[Music stops,
cellphone rings]
Hey, yo, little girl.
I was just writing a song
with you in mind.
Oh, yeah? What's it for?
"Beauty and the Beast 2"?
Wait a second.
You said you quit music,
remember?
I did not say that.
I said I was done making
the same music
and that I was gonna
quit the tour.
Not music.
Besides, I'm bored out of my
mind in here
with nothing to do.
Literally. It's either
drink gallons of vodka
or write a song.
So you must be out of vodka.
[Chuckles] Wow.
How about you keep your day job
of being a giant pain
in my rear end?
[Scoffs]
How are you feeling, kid?
I'm good.
I kind of miss my own room,
but I'm okay, I guess.
Right. Yeah.
Well, let's get
those tests done.
We'll have you back
in your own bed soon.
I'm out of Edy's, too.
Well, the thing about Edy's,
it has a magical ability
to show up
just when you need it most.
[nurse] Hey, Jessica.
It's time for your medication.
Well, okay,
I guess I gotta go.
Alright, love.
Talk to you later.
[Somber piano music playing]
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
-Never cry
-Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
[Breathing heavily]
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
[Breathing heavily]
[Monitor beeping]
[Guitar playing
soft rock song]
I'm here to set you free
Free from all
the false kings and queens
Who've been
keeping you down
Lying to your face
Trying to distract you
from my face
It's grace that frees you
to hear and to see
Truth in the water
flowing endlessly
Never thirst,
never hunger again
Oh
There is no end
You want to kill me
But you cannot fight
You want to mock me?
Oh, well, in this place
Whoo-whee!
[Laughs]
Now, that will bring even
the most wretched
right back
to the mercy of the Lord.
But I'm afraid your moves
might bring
the most righteous right back
to sin.
Hey! Stop it!
You're gonna make me blush.
I can't help it, though.
I do feel great.
And you should feel great.
Yeah. I'm gonna call Rock.
You know, I haven't
talked to him in months.
And I really think
I found the new Elijah Peel.
[Soft guitar music playing]
I woke up
In the middle of my sleep
The sounds of nails
Drive me to my knees
Waves of guilt,
unworthiness and shame
Conquered me
until I saw his face
His is not an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
Every heart sows a seed
In my weakness,
he meets my needs
Every favor born in need
His is not an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
His is not an ordinary love
So many tears shed
Too many wrongs...
Well, well, well.
What do we have here?
[Giggling]
[Yawns] Okay, cool.
Good on that.
And, uh, I need to check...
[Yawning]
[Giggling]
...the lead. Elijah pulling up
on the right. Coming in hot.
Rrrr! There's an accident
on the field.
-Oh!
-[Giggling]
It sounds like a monkey
banging on drums.
If he only knows
how to say it
Give it to me--
Give it to me straight.
How are we looking, doc?
No?
What do you mean, "no"?
-[Giggling]
-Oh, he sees the checkered flag
-and he circles round the bend.
-Hey!
He's gonna do it again.
He's fast.
[Italian accent] Hello.
We have the best pizza
in town. You're going to love.
-[Laughing]
-Vroom, vroom, vroom.
Thank you.
-Hot, hot, hot!
-[Laughing]
Take one finger...
Across a dusty stranger
No one worthy
for a crown he gave
Now she only knows
how to save
-Freeze!
-[Laughing]
The monkey's
in the bananas.
The monkey's in the bananas.
Knows how to save
And she is my well
Is a river deep
Son of man spoke it to me
Oh, my well
Is a river deep
[Indistinct chatter]
What game are we playing?
He's my love
You must believe
And your hunger
has been relieved
Oh, his water,
it lives and it frees
No.
[Laughing]
Oh, my well
My well
It has no end
And it has no end
[Laughing]
[Rock] Hey, Eli.
Listen, I've got that meeting
tomorrow with Joe.
Where's the music, buddy?
I mean, they've been
calling me nonstop,
and we have a record
to deliver in three weeks,
-and I haven't even
heard it yet.
-Yeah. No. I'm ready.
How do you want it?
MP3's, Waves, e-mail, WhatsApp?
-Fine. Whatever.
-Well, consider it done.
Alright, look,
I'm heading into a meeting.
-I'll talk to you later.
-Wait, wait, wait.
Eli, listen, um...
is this thing cool?
I know you said it's different
than your other albums,
but, um...
How different is it?
Mancetti's got
a world-class temper.
Is he gonna throw me
out for this?
[woman] Yes, Mr. Mancetti?
Okay, I'll let him know.
Great people
are working on it.
I can't wait to see that.
I'm about to drop
my first album,
and then I'm gonna
go on tour from there.
Okay, there you go.
Good luck with that.
-Thanks.
-Can't wait to hear it.
It's gonna be awesome.
-Mr. Diamond?
-Hmm?
He'll see you now.
Oh, thank you very much.
Excuse me.
I think that's
Elijah Peel's manager.
Oh, my gosh, Rock.
It's been a minute.
-It sure has.
-How are you?
-How is Eli?
-Oh. He's amazing.
He's just doing his thing.
You know him.
Yeah. I am one of him.
Crazy artists.
So, I love your last album.
I'm such a big fan.
Oh, thanks.
Say hi to Eli for me.
[Joe] Hey, is that you, Rock?
Get in here, will you?
Uh, yeah, Joe.
It's me. Uh, look, I gotta go.
-Um, you look great.
-Thanks.
-Hey, Joe.
-Hey, buddy. How you doing?
-I'm doing great.
-Something to drink?
-Um, yeah. Water's fine.
-Alright.
Rock Water?
What, did you,
uh, get this as some kind of
joke for me or something?
Uh, maybe. Nah.
I was just down at the store,
and I saw it,
and I had to bring some in here.
I thought it was
a new business venture of yours.
No, no. I wish. I'd ask
for a commission on it.
You good? I take it
the wife is good?
You mean my ex.
Yeah. Well, this business
will do that.
Oh, yeah.
So how's Eli?
I heard he found God
or something.
You know,
he's getting stronger every day,
and, uh, you know, heart
attacks are gonna change you.
Yeah. $5 million advances
will do that, too.
I took a lot of heat for that.
You know?
His last album didn't
exactly set the world on fire,
which wouldn't have been so bad
if he actually did
some promotion,
you know, like touring.
That heart attack
may have almost killed him,
but it definitely killed us.
Between that and all
the frickin' streaming services,
you can't make
any damn money anymore,
except a tour.
Guess that sucks for you.
Yeah, well, you know,
he is getting stronger,
like I said, and he's not gonna
give us any problems.
You know, he's--
he's clean now.
I'm due a record.
-You have it, I presume?
-Yeah.
Oh, uh, Joe,
I, uh... I like this record.
It's a little different
than his other albums,
but, uh, I think
his fans are gonna love it.
You know, it's, um...
You know, it's his experience
and it's real edgy
in a spiritual sort of way.
Well, that's all warm
and fuzzy, Rock,
but his target demographic
remains the same.
They're young and carefree.
The only spirits they care about
are Jack and Daniel.
No spirit, just sex and X.
You know, Justin Bieber's
thing did pretty well.
And don't forget Kanye.
I mean, his record
was a smash, too.
[Sighs]
Alright.
[Choir singing]
Oh, Lord, please
Deliver us
Deliver me
[Eli] So, uh, there I was
as if I were
still actively using drugs
and walking down the same old
street looking for my dealer.
It was like I was
on remote control.
Like, uh,
like an autopilot or something.
I just...
I forgot about everyone.
Everything that I was trying
to become,
willing to throw it all away.
Never thirst,
never hunger again
There is no end
[Joe] Next.
You want to kill me--
Grace
Nothing,
no one can hurt me
That's the promise
he gave
Me
Though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death
Hell yeah. Yeah.
It was scary.
But you did it.
And the promise
-[Joe] Next.
Of the great I am--
Say, why do birds cry?
Why do you cry?
Why do you stay--
[Scoffs]
So it's different, huh?
"Follow me"? "Follow me"?
Are you freaking serious?
I'm afraid so.
This is a breach of contract,
Diamond.
This is death for you and Eli.
Come on, Joe.
That's a little harsh.
A little harsh? Are you
freaking serious right now?
You play this crap for me
with a straight face.
You set up a meeting with me
to play me the next pop record,
as required by Eli's contract
and instead, you play me some
"Follow me through the valley
of the shadow of death."
-Are you freaking
high right now?
-Don't shoot the messenger.
You know what?
Tell that holy roller
he's got three weeks
to get me a pop record,
or he's finished,
and I'm suing
the hell out of both of you.
I want my $5 million
plus damages.
Um, I know
this record is different--
Three weeks. Now, get out.
-Joe, could you just listen--
-Do I stutter?!
-Can I leave this with you?
-Get out!
Oh, Mama, oh, Jesus
Oh, doctor, oh, friend
Get me on the next flight
to Memphis and call Peel.
Tell him I'll be there
for a breakfast meeting.
Yeah, you got it.
Everything's not alright
And everything's not okay
I know that
I told you it was
But I didn't want to spoil
your day
Oh, Mama, oh, Jesus
Yeah. It's Rock.
I'm here to see Eli.
Oh, doctor, oh, friend
Throw me another lifeline
Ahh!
There he is in the flesh!
Ahh! Rock! [Laughs]
Eli, you look good.
Can you not, man?
I got a lot to show you, mate.
You're gonna love this.
It's gonna take a lot of time.
I got pineapple for days.
It's a long staircase, so it's
okay if you take a break.
Hattie, this is the man,
the myth, the legend.
Rock Diamond.
And, Rock, this is Hattie,
the godsend.
Mr. Diamond, it's so nice
to finally meet you.
Nice to meet you, too, Hattie.
May I offer you anything
to drink?
Some tea, coffee?
Uh, yeah, I guess coffee.
Little cream, sugar.
Perfect.
Hattie, we're gonna
head down to the studio
for a little meeting, and, uh,
we'll walk after, yeah?
Alright.
Very well, Mr. Peel.
I've never seen
this place so quiet.
Usually I have to
call the coroner
-after one of your parties.
-[Laughs]
-Yeah, it's all changing, Rock.
-Mm.
I'll tell you, I've never been
so clearheaded in all my life.
Perfect clarity,
no toxins, no distractions.
And I'll tell you what,
I've never been so creative
in all my life.
I wake up in the morning
with whole songs just ready
to record.
Like there's a little antenna
and I'm picking it up
while I'm sleeping.
And I'm turning this whole thing
into a monastery.
It's bad, Eli.
Bad?
Really bad.
[Sighs]
What do you mean?
I was embarrassed for the
first time in my life yesterday.
And all the crap that
you've done on tours and hotels
and girls and drugs,
nothing compared
to what I felt yesterday.
I was humiliated because
I knew what I played for him,
that he would never support it.
But I did it for you
because you talked me
into believing
that this was the goods.
Eli...
I hate to say it to you,
but this will never sell
if the label isn't behind it.
And trust me, this label
is not gonna push this.
I can't do this anymore.
I'm a rocker, bro.
This is not my world,
this Jesus music thing.
I-I can't...
help you
or help myself.
I can't do it.
You're gonna have to get a
new manager, and it can't be me.
I've got to live, too.
I-I've got kids.
I've got two wives, two ex-wives
that you helped make exes.
Oh, geez.
You, uh... You got Jesus,
and I got a dead career.
Something is very wrong here.
So, um...
are you sure about this,
that this is really
what you want?
You're wrong on this, man.
It is good.
But, hey, let's just say
I'm out of my mind,
and it's not.
It's who I am now.
And I'm not gonna force
some damn cheesy pop record
or whatever that even means.
Eli, I want to be
very clear on this.
Us... This...
it will all go away.
It doesn't matter
whether I'm here
or in some shack somewhere.
It don't change me.
I'm a different person
than I was three years ago.
Hell. Six months.
I'll take whatever happens
as a result
because I have peace.
And I hope
you find some, too. I do.
[Chuckles]
Look, no hard feelings
on my end
because I know
what you're left with.
And I know
how hard it is for you.
This is my new life
and I must be obedient to it.
With me, it's life or death.
Okay.
Okay.
You take care, my friend.
-[P.A. announcement]
Paging Dr. Bender.
-[Eli] Yep. Told Rock
I gotta pay back the $5 million
they advanced me.
[Jessica] Five million dollars?
Five million dollars.
Probably got to sell the house.
You-- You can stay right here
with me.
[Laughing]
Well,
that don't make no sense.
'Cause you're getting
out of here.
You've got to know that,
sweetie.
Believe in tomorrow
and know that it's beautiful,
and that you're going to thrive.
Catch your dreams.
Okay, you gotta visualize it
in the depths of your soul.
You never gave an answer
to that note I gave you.
You know?
We don't gotta
talk about that right now.
-Come on.
-I want an answer, though.
[Eli sighs]
If I said yes,
would that make you happy?
Yes.
[Monitor beeping]
Well...
Well, then you have a deal,
Miss Jessica.
Alright.
You need to get some rest,
young lady.
I think I broke this thing.
So, can I hear your music?
What, you mean that thing
that no one likes?
Oh, come on, I won't laugh.
[Chuckles] Yeah, right.
[P.A. announcement] All nurses
to the nurses' station.
-I broke it. Yeah.
-Got it. Let's...
Hey. Jessica.
Jessica, give me my phone.
"Follow Me,"
"I've Been There."
-Give it back.
-"One day..."
-It's very rude.
-"A Life Too Short."
-"Story Too Old"?
-No, no.
-Let's do that one.
-Not that one.
Can you give me my phone,
please?
[P.A. announcement]
Code blue, room 305.
Well,
if you're gonna listen to one,
listen to the "Follow Me" tune.
Though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death
I'm alive with a warrant
and your word that I've kept
My trust will not break--
Like a blind man
in the dark
Jessica.
Jessica.
-[Knock on door]
-Jessica, open the door.
Open the door!
Please, please,
please open the door.
The song's not ready.
Okay? It's not ready.
It's just a scratch
vocal track. Please.
She's in good company
My Savior said to me
Bring me your burden
Bring your hand to me...
Please, sweetie,
you got to get back in bed.
You've got to get back in bed.
Bring me your pleasures
Bring me all your gold
Open the door, sweetie, please.
[Sniffles]
Jessica, we're supposed
to have trust.
It's a-- It's a scratch vocal.
It's not even mixed yet.
It's not ready.
A life too short
Get back in bed.
And a story too old
Jessica, can you
please open the door?
Do-do-do-do-do-do
-It's not ready.
-[Sniffling]
It's just scratched vocals.
[Crying]
You weren't supposed
to hear it.
So I searched
for some good meaning
For some rhyme
or for some reason
Where's the gift?
I know there is one
Jessica, come out.
Pardon me
if I can't find it
She's in good company
My Savior said to me
Bring me your burden
What-- What are you doing?
-Where's Jessica?
-We had a moment.
Jessica.
Jessica, open up this door!
-Hi, Mommy.
-Jessica, open up this door.
-[Sniffles]
-[Maria] You need
to leave right now.
-What have you done?
-Nothing.
-Jessica.
-I didn't do anything, I swear.
-Get out!
-It's not what you think.
Get out now!
No. I was trying
to show her a song.
Get away from us.
A life too short
Oh, God, oh, my God.
-Oh, my God, oh, my God.
-No!
Sorry. I'm so sorry.
I should have never let him
get so close to us like this.
-I'm so sorry for this.
-Mommy, no.
[Crying]
He's my best friend
and now he's gone.
-What? What?
-[Crying]
He didn't do anything bad.
-He just wrote me a song.
-What?
Just wrote me a song.
[Crying]
[Dramatic music playing]
[woman] Hey, baby.
You need a light?
[man] Careful, man.
Careful.
Hey, Tony! Tony.
Hey, Tony!
Hey.
I thought you found God, man.
Go home.
Keep on walking.
Go home.
-Keep on walking.
-Tony, come on, come on.
-Keep on walking.
-Come on, mate.
Bugger off then.
[Breathing heavily]
Spoon!
No, no, no, no, no, no,
he good, he good.
I got it.
Y'all can walk.
Damn, London.
I thought you died, man.
Yeah. Not hardly, mate.
You got something for me?
I need it.
I need it now, okay?
I need it, Spoon.
Yeah. Okay.
Follow me.
Thought you got cleaned up, bro.
[Eli] I did. A few months.
[Heart beating]
Right around here, London.
-Hey, man.
-Yeah?
I thought you found God.
Spoon, I don't want
to hear that right now!
I came here for one thing,
and one thing only.
Come on, man.
Alright. Wait here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-[Door slams]
-Hey! You'll find God in here!
Hey! Spoon!
[Pounding on door]
Spoon! Open the door!
[Pounding on door]
[woman] He ain't coming back.
Who's there?!
Who's there?!
Answer me!
[woman] They call me Ro.
Spoon, he never comes back.
Not for days.
[Sniffs]
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no.
He will for me.
[Pounding on door]
Spoon!
-...some rock star?
-Unlock the damn door!
He ain't coming back.
[Foot kicking]
Spoon!
[Doorknob rattling]
Come on, man!
Get back here!
Get back here!
[Ro grunting]
This is not happening.
This is...
[Ro grunting]
No, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no! No!
Don't do this. Come on.
Don't do this.
-Don't do this!
-[Ro grunting]
Spoon! Spoon!
Get back here now!
[Breathing heavily]
Aah!
Come on!
Come on, girl. Come on!
Come on, Ro.
You're alright. Come on.
No, no. No, no, no.
Don't die, don't die!
Come on. Come on.
Spoon!
Spoon! Open the door!
Come on.
It's okay, it's okay.
There you go.
There you are.
What if he does
something bad? Gets hurt?
Okay.
Sweetie, can you hang in there
and try to rest for me?
-Can you do that?
-[Sniffles]
How long will you be gone?
I-I don't know, sweetie,
but not too long.
Okay?
You're gonna try to rest.
Please.
I will fix this.
I promise you.
Okay?
[crying]
Alright.
[Line ringing]
[woman, on phone] Maria? Hi.
How's it going?
[Maria] Hey, Tina.
It's Officer Sanchez. Listen.
-I need help locating someone.
-Pickup?
-No.
-Okay.
No, no.
Absolutely no pickup.
Just, if you get any tips,
anybody sees him,
you call me, okay?
-Okay. Yeah.
-Just call me.
Do not pick him up.
-Alright.
-It's a friend.
-It's...
-Ah.
...Elijah Peel.
[Eli] Okay. Come on.
Yeah, there she is.
There she is.
Come on.
Won't silence the noise
It's the past
[Coughs, vomits]
Oh! Come on!
Ah!
Bloody hell!
Hit the radio
Turn it up loud
Your heart is racing
to the deafening sound
Faces appear
[Eli] Geez. Come on.
From an old movie show
And you cry out loud
"Make this go"
[Breathing heavily]
But nothing mutes it
Except singing in the car
Singing in the car
Speeding so far
Away
And you don't know
who you are
And the fog
covers the stars
When you're singing
in the car...
What kind of trouble
are you getting into, Mister?
Well,
if it ain't the greatest,
probably even
the prettiest probation officer
in the city of Memphis.
What's up, Sanchez?
No trouble around here.
My probation was over
a long time ago.
Well, lucky for you,
I'm not looking for you,
or trouble.
-Just a friend.
-Mm.
You, um, seen any British guys
around here, by any chance?
Thirties, white as hell?
British.
If you value one iota of
your freedom or peace or ability
to ever walk
these streets again,
so help me, you better start
freaking talking!
Do you hear me, Spoon?
Now!
You talking about Peel?
Freakin' yeah,
I am talking about Peel.
Where is he, Spoon?!
Alright.
Get in.
Ah, there she is.
Take this.
Go find a room for a week.
Find a church.
There's hope for us still.
Uh... [Sighs]
You're young.
Get yourself cleaned up.
You got your whole life
ahead of you.
Do you want to come with?
Nah, I got nothing.
-That key you took...
-Yeah, sorry about that.
No sorries needed, rock man.
That key...
it opens the door.
Yeah, I know.
Go.
[Lock disengages]
One, two, three, four!
[Maria] Where am I going, Spoon?
Yeah, it's just up here
to your right.
[Choir vocalizing]
[Panting]
Two, three, four!
Eli!
Hey! Hey!
Eli!
Oh!
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
You're okay.
I'm an-- I'm an idiot.
I'm a total idiot.
-No.
-I feel sick
about what I did to you.
I would never forgive myself,
never,
if I hadn't have found you.
No,
I would've done the same thing.
You came in
and Jessica wasn't there,
and I was just crying
on the floor.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, okay? I owe you.
You listen to me.
You have been a godsend
these past few months.
Jessica has a sparkle
in her eye.
You did that. You!
I couldn't. I was-- I was
too wrapped up in "poor me."
You gave her a reason
to fight on.
[Voice breaking]
Don't you know that?
Maria, no.
Please, no.
It's nothing.
That song that you wrote...
Jessica played it for me.
I don't, um,
think that I have ever been
so moved in my entire life.
It may be the most
beautiful song ever written.
What a gift you have.
And what a gift to her.
I mean, you've-- You have made
her feel special beyond anything
anyone could have ever done.
And you are an amazing man.
Truly.
You wouldn't say
that if you knew what I did.
But you didn't.
Yeah, but I tried.
I really tried.
But you didn't.
And I am so glad because
it would have been all my fault,
so...
thank you.
Come on.
[Sighs]
[Eli] Well, well, well.
Look what the dog dragged in.
You suck, bruv!
You have no idea what
you left me with back there.
The hell I don't.
-What do you mean?
-Yeah,
you think
that shit was an accident, bro?
Guys.
Guys, we need to get back.
-Let's-- Let's go.
-No, no, no, no, no.
-Look, look...
-It's okay.
Eli, stay dry, man.
Ms. Sanchez,
you've always been based to me.
Y'all handle y'all business.
Let's go.
[Monitor beeping]
[Maria] Jessica?
Honey?
Look who I found.
[Gasps softly]
Hey, you.
[Maria] And I want you to know
that Eli and I
had a nice talk and...
And you never have to worry
about me being out of your life.
You can't just throw me away
like some toy
at The Salvation Army.
I never got to tell you...
but after hearing your music,
it's not that bad.
Pretty good, actually.
Keep up the good work.
Yeah, I intend to.
Well, hey,
you get some rest, sweetie.
Seems I ruined everyone's day...
per usual.
Thanks again, Maria.
I'm so sorry for everything.
I've just been numb
so long that...
I didn't realize how...
how empty I was and, uh...
just fragile.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm just gonna say it.
I see you reading
all these passages in the Bible
like it's a research book.
Bible verses projected
all on the monitors.
You singing all those hymns.
But do you even know
what they mean?
Well, at least I'm trying
to understand them
-for the first time.
-But why?
Why go there to the Bible?
Baby, what are you seeking?
Or is it just a subject
to write about?
I don't know. [Chuckles]
I don't know.
I never much cared for religion.
Didn't grow up with any.
And Jessica starts talking
about Jesus.
And after my heart attack,
I was so lost and weak.
I... guess I started opening
myself to it.
"It"? What's "it"?
God.
Jesus.
Trying to be a better person,
I guess.
I just... never thought
God liked me much, is all.
You know, my look,
my lifestyle, all that.
Hm.
Oh, no, no, baby.
Now, Jesus may not like
your lifestyle,
I'll give you that.
But he loves you.
He hates the sin,
loves the sinner.
He died for your sins,
all of our sins.
You do know that, don't you?
I mean, how could he love me?
You know? After everything
I've done to myself.
I know what they say, okay?
I read it, I hear it.
You, Jessie,
the gospel choir singer.
"To save a wretch like me."
But do you believe it?
Listen to me.
That notion of being worthy.
You? Me?
We would never be
worthy enough.
But-- and this is a big but--
our worthiness does not get us
to be with the Father,
'cause we all fall short
of his glory...
and will forever.
But, baby, it's his grace.
God the Father's grace.
Go read John 3:16.
"For God so loved the world that
he gave his only begotten Son,
that whoso believeth in him
shall not perish,
but live eternal life."
I'll see you back
at the house.
Yeah, I'll see you there.
I'm gonna keep walking
for a little bit.
Okay. Okay.
I'll see you there.
We give you all the glory
Let him feel your presence.
Glory
We give you all the glory
[Cellphone rings]
Hey, Rock. What's up, man?
I see you didn't jump.
Eli. It's great to speak
to you, buddy.
You're gonna love this.
We're gonna shove it
to Mancetti.
[Laughs] There we go, man.
That's what I'm talking about.
Oh, what's up?
What do you got for me?
I just left
the greatest meeting ever
with the head of programming
at NBC.
Completely different matter.
Anyway, we start talking
about you, naturally.
And, you know, he asked what
your next move is, et cetera.
And I kind of explain
where you were spiritually,
et cetera.
"Et cetera, et cetera"
what, man?
Get to the bloody point.
I played Jessica's song
for him.
I swear to you,
he starts crying.
-No.
-Yes!
-No.
-Yes! And he is so moved, bro.
Literally so moved.
His niece just died of cancer
and it hit him
like a ton of bricks.
And he says,
"You got to put this out."
And I said, "Look,
the label just threw me
out of their office
for playing
the exact same demo."
[Laughs]
Ah, yeah, man!
That's great. Oh!
Are you joking?
Are you blowing bubbles, mate?
You better not
be messing with me.
I kid you not.
So he buzzes his secretary
and yells,
"Get Mancetti on the phone!"
Do not.
Do not mess with me, bro.
-It gets better.
-No.
Mancetti gets on the phone
and he goes, "What's up, Bobby?"
I'm sitting right there
on speaker
unbeknownst to him.
And Bob tells him, "Hey,
I just heard 'A Life Too Short,
Story Too Old.'
-You know, Peel's new music?"
-Do not mess with me!
Are you messing with me? Uh, you
better not be messing with me.
You could hear
Mancetti's brain fizzle.
And then Bob says,
"You know,
I'm making the theme song
for a brand-new series
on prime-time Thursdays
called 'Nothing with Angels.'
And I hear you're killing
this record?
Are you nuts, Mancetti?"
I'm speechless, Rock.
Absolutely speechless.
This is sick, man!
Absolutely sick.
Look, um, I'm gonna have
to call you in a few, alright?
-Oh, wait. No. Wait.
-No, I'm visiting Jessica.
-I'll call you later.
-Come on!
Open up your eyes
[Gasps]
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my-- Are you...
Yes. I'll take that.
-Oh. Oh, my gosh.
-This is gonna be worth
a lot of money one day, ladies.
Don't lose that.
[Woman cheering]
Why can't you
feel what I...
Hi.
Hey, sweetie.
-Hi.
-Hi, Elijah.
How are you?
You look so good.
Where...
Where's your mum?
[Wheezes, coughs]
It's okay, it's okay.
It's okay. It's okay.
-[Coughing]
-Go get them-- Now.
Nurse! Nurse! Help!
It's okay, baby.
They're gonna come help.
They're gonna help.
She can't breathe!
She can't breathe!
-I got oxygen.
-Here. Get her hooked up-- now!
[Maria] Easy. Alright.
You're gonna be okay.
Mommy's right here, honey.
[nurse] Check her lung sounds.
-Not sounding very good.
-[Maria] Slow. Slow breaths.
Come on.
Okay. It's gonna be okay.
Come on. Slow breaths.
Breathe, breathe, breathe.
Mommy's right here.
I got you.
Okay. Mommy's right here.
Mommy's right here, baby.
Mommy-- Mommy's right here.
Mommy's right here.
You're gonna make it
through this, okay?
Just...
Just breathe.
Hang in there.
Hang in there, Jessie.
Yeah, that's it, that's it.
That's it.
You got it. Breathe.
God be with you
[P.A. announcement] Dr. Navarro.
Dr. Navarro, please.
Hey.
Um...
she's not doing so good, Eli.
It's, uh-- It's not good.
Yesterday, I was so hopeless.
And then...
last night,
it was just awful, and...
Honestly, I can't fathom
how other parents of kids
deal with this, this...
slow death,
this slow torture
of their babies.
But, um-- But I...
I do--
I do have some interesting news.
Maybe.
Good?
Do you mean good?
I don't know,
but it's something.
Um, I spoke
to an old classmate of mine.
She's a specialist
in alternative therapies
and stem cell research,
and...
they are conducting
a breakthrough clinical trial.
And she got Jessica into it.
[Breathes sharply]
She says that there's
been promising early results
that children with this exact
type of cancer have recovered.
None of them in this stage of it
that Jessica's in,
but still really,
really amazing early results.
-[Breathes sharply]
-I just, um...
[Voice breaking] I don't know
if she can make it there.
That's-- That's amazing.
That's unbelievable.
It is.
It's incredible.
And, uh, I can help.
I can help in any way
you'll let me.
I have this amazing nurse.
She brought me back to perfect
health, and she can go with you.
I can line up all the travel,
cover the expenses,
the trial, everything.
I want to help, okay?
Please.
If you will let me help.
Just let me help.
-Okay.
-Please.
Okay.
Oh-ho!
There he is.
-Hey, Rock.
-Oh, my gosh.
-Good to see you.
-Good to see you, Eli.
You look ten years younger.
-Oh, funny.
-No, you do.
I feel ten years older.
Oh, come on.
You gotta feel better than that.
You look fantastic.
Alright. Hey, listen.
So I told you
that Joe was supposed
to call me that same day.
-Yeah.
-So like clockwork,
Joe gives me a call.
He says, "You know,
I've been thinking about this.
Maybe I might have reacted
a little too quickly.
You know, this whole contempt
before investigation,
blah, blah, blah."
And I said, "Do you think, Joe?"
Oh, he started
coming around, did he?
Oh, full circle.
I mean, I just spoke to him
before a meeting
and they want more.
Yeah, they want more of this.
They like this whole
spirituality thing,
this whole battling from the,
you know, bad things,
redemption and the positive
thing, all that stuff.
They want more of this stuff.
Come on. This is incredible.
It's resonating with them.
It makes me feel sick.
-Why?
It's funny, innit?
I was an outlaw
and they loved me.
And I loved being an outlaw.
Then I start writing
these original songs for me.
You know, in a way,
it was like my act of rebellion
into my own place.
Like, I got off on
the mainstream media hating it.
Right?
And now it's in
when I want to be out.
Come on.
You're not happy, Eli?
You don't know me at all,
do you, Rock?
You know what would
make me happy?
You got a pen? Alright.
-I need a jet.
-What?
Write it down.
I'm taking Jessica and
about four or five others
out to Hamburg,
and I need a medical jet--
-full gear, full staff,
and fast.
-How fast?
I'll call you tonight,
but I need it ready.
And I need it
at my beck and call, okay?
Her life is dependent on it, and
we are gonna get it for her.
Alright.
Alright. Not to change
the subject here--
And I got it all
written down here.
The med jet thing, the staff,
everything-- I got it.
Scout's honor.
I'll make it happen.
But, uh,
can I just have a couple minutes
to tell you
what's been going on,
-you know, with music?
-Go ahead, Rock.
Thank you. Alright. I need you
to do some late-night shows.
We got to promote the album,
you know.
Then I want to do a video.
'Cause
God's work ain't done
-God's work ain't done
-No, it ain't done
No, it ain't done
God's work ain't done
Fly like an angel
Keep your head
in the clouds
Reach your hand up to Jesus
[Eli] Father, I ask you
to watch over
Jessica and Maria.
I pray their safe journey
and return.
Thank you for this gift
of hope and faith.
[Rock] Eli.
[Eli] In Jesus' name. Amen.
It's time to go, bud.
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Sighs]
This last year was
the most difficult of my life...
and yet the most beautiful.
[Clears throat]
God sent an angel
down to Earth to me,
albeit with broken wings...
to heal my brokenness
and lead me to Jesus Christ.
And now we are both perfected.
When I first met her, Jessica...
she asked me to do
two things.
And I'm here to make right
on one of those requests today.
She said...
Let me just read it
so I don't bugger it up.
[Paper rustling]
"Dear Elijah, would you please
sing a song at my funeral?
It would mean the world to me.
And could you please
watch over my mummy?
Because she's the most
beautiful mummy in the world.
And I've been the luckiest girl
in the world to have her.
Thank you so much.
Love, Jessica."
[Paper rustling]
Well...
here's to honoring one
of those requests today,
my darling angel.
["Life Too Short,
Story Too Long" plays]
A soul without a savior
Searching for a home
Reached my hand out
to an angel
Don't wanna be alone
Like a blind man
in a garden
Or a seeing man
in the weeds
Had it all
with no direction
She caught me drowning
in a sea
She's in good company
"My Savior said to me"
"Bring me your burdens
Bring your hand to me
Bring me your treasures
Bring me all your gold"
Oh, a life too short
A life too short
A life too short
And a story too old
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
So I searched
for some good meaning
For some rhyme
or for some reason
Where's the gift?
I know there is one
Pardon me
if I can't find it
I baptize you in the name
of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
My Savior said to me
We are buried with him
in death...
and raised again to walk
in the newness of life.
Whoo!
Bring me your treasures
Bring me all your gold
Oh, a life too short
A life too short
A life too short
And a story too old
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
-Do-do-do, do-do, do
-Ooh
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do

[man, on radio] This is KWNW-FM
in HD,
Crawfordsville, Memphis,
Star Media radio station.
Good morning, Memphis.
Waking up to the song
that launched Elijah Peel
to superstar status.
Playing tonight at the
Coliseum, here's Elijah Peel.
-Aah!
-"Can You Feel It?"
Whoa!
[Yelling]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
[Singing along with radio]
Driving in my car,
she slides next to me
Next to me
[Eli, in British accent]
Call you later, Rock.
Puts her hand up on my leg
Shows me where
her interest be
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
Stop calling, Rock!
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Paparazzi?
Are you kidding me?
Maggots!
[Mumbling]
Can you feel it?
Wake up! Come on.
They can't see me like this.
We're going around the back.
Alright?
Can you feel it?
Bloody paparazzi!
Filthy, dirty maggots!
-[Crowd yelling]
-No, he's not here.
He's not here.
He's not here.
Hey.
What? What are you doing?
[Echoing] Take you in
to the dark of night...
We've got a sound check
coming up for the show tonight.
I got three limos coming.
I got a police escort coming.
Can you feel it?
We got to get there right now.
Bro, just open the door.
Here, he's probably sleeping.
I'll wake him up. Okay?
Can you feel it?
Just call him.
What do you want, Rock?
What do you want?
Why are you calling me
a thousand damn times, huh?
-What?
-Want the door open?
No. Rock,
will you please stop?!
I'll call you when I'm ready.
How about that? Bye.
[female reporter] Elijah Peel's
bringing his big act to town,
and that means big trouble.
Found your way back home
[reporter, on TV] Last time
Peel checked into Nashville,
he checked out
with a $75,000 bill.
[automated voice] This is
Elijah Peel's elevator.
Welcome. I hope you're having
a nice day.
[reporter] Meanwhile...
Just get my name
out your stupid mouth.
There's no escaping anything.
There's no escape!
Ain't you got
nothing better to do?
You're nothing without me.
[automated voice]
And here we are. Ding!
Oh, oh, oh,
can you feel it?
One, two, three, four!
I think it's time.
[Knock on door]
Eli.
Eli! Come on.
Alright, look.
I'm coming in.
[Song stops abruptly]
How's my bum look
in these pants, bro?
Come on, Eli.
You-- You promised me.
We gotta go, Eli. The limo's
gonna leave without us.
You're gonna go without me?
[Laughs]
Where are you gonna go?
Yeah, tell me.
Tell me, Rock.
Where are you going?
That sound check alone
is gonna be streaming
to over ten million homes.
And if we're late, we are done.
-It's in the contract.
-[Cellphone rings]
We'll be down in one minute.
"This is in the contract."
-I don't have time for this.
-Go get it.
I'm not gonna sit here
and watch you kill yourself
in your own fricking house,
Elvis.
I put way too much work
into this.
I'll get your pants.
[Sniffs] Alright.
Okay.
Alright.
Try these pants on, sexy boy.
We gotta go.
Eli, come on!
Where is it?
Give it to me!
Get your hands off me,
you whacked-out jerk!
[Laughing]
Come on, give it to me, Rock.
Give it to me.
Give it to me
and we go right now.
No, I don't care if
you want to destroy your life,
but I'm not gonna contribute
to it any longer.
I'm not giving it to you!
Give it to me right now
and we can leave.
Come on, Rock.
Come on, Rock.
Just give it to me now!
Give us the bag
and we'll leave right now.
-Right now.
-Here. Fine. Take it.
[Scoffs] I'm out of here.
If you're not down there
in exactly five minutes,
we're leaving without you.
[Crowd yelling]
I'm sorry. Sorry, sorry.
He went out the back door.
He's in a really good mood.
[woman] How do you get
to the back door?
If he's not here
in five minutes, leave.
[woman] Can I come in? Elijah?
[Sighs]
I'm too old for this.
Where are my pants?!
[Retching]
One, two,
one, two, three, four
[Crowd screaming]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
[Rock] Right.
Almost there, buddy.
You got an interview
set up in the green room.
They'll have the cameras rolling
when we pull up.
We're gonna rock the house.
-We're gonna rock the house.
-[Rock] Okay?
I'm gonna walk you
through the crowd.
-Gonna rock the house.
-[Rock] You look like hell, bro.
You got powder all over
your face like a damn baby.
I gotta wipe you like a child.
-[Bell tolling]
-[woman] Eli, wake up.
We're here.
Driver, you have to
get by these fans.
Find a way.
Just-- Just find a way.
[Fans screaming]
Eli, Eli, listen. Listen to me,
alright? I'm gonna get out.
I'm gonna see
if I can control this madness.
When I get out, I want you
to duck down.
Alright? Duck down.
And lock the door, please.
Rock the house.
-This is off the record, okay?
-Rock the house!
He is sick as a dog.
He's got a 102 fever. Alright?
[Laughs]
He's not gonna be
able to make the show.
He wasn't gonna make it.
He wanted to do it.
[Breathing heavily]
I didn't want him to come
to the show,
but he said, "Hey,
I love my fans too much.
I don't want
to disappoint my fans."
But I promise you, I'll give
you an interview after the show.
-You promise?
-I promise. [Indistinct]
Alright? Alright.
Exclusive for sure.
Hey, hey, it's showtime, buddy.
Time to earn your money.
Let's go, stud.
Here, put this on.
Cover your head. Come on.
Don't talk to a soul.
-Ready? Come on.
-[Crowd screaming]
Come on.
You're doing fine. You're doing
great. We're almost there.
[Rhythmic clapping]
[Cheers and applause]
Eli!
Hey! Get a medical team
in here right now!
Now! Where are the meds?!
Get 'em in here!
He can't breathe!
Eli, come on!
Come on, buddy.
Eli!
[Siren wailing]
[doctor] Okay. Cocaine overdose.
What can you tell me?
-What's his pulse?
Do we have two
wide bore IVs set up?
We're working on that.
-Who is this guy, anyway?
-Mr. Peel.
-[doctor] Who?
-Elijah...
Okay.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
[Sighs]
[Monitor beeping]
I need a drink.
[Exhales slowly]
Where am I?
[Rock] You're in the ICU, Eli.
Day two.
Don't-- Don't you remember?
-ICU.
-Yeah.
Oh,
you must be my lucky nurse.
Hello, sweetheart.
Oh, well, all of a sudden,
he talks.
Don't "sweetheart" me.
And please, sir. Out!
This is intensive care,
not a listening party.
Okay. Hey...
I'll see you in the morning.
Get some rest.
Yeah.
[Sighs]
Great work.
I might just have to hire you
to be my personal bodyguard.
You got the right disposition.
-Not to mention the figure.
-I'm sorry.
I was trying to figure out
what shot to give you.
Morphine or strychnine?
What was that you said?
[Breathes deeply]
Just, uh...
What a lovely job you're doing.
Yeah,
that's what I thought you said.
Now, get some rest.
[Echoing]
Good night, Mr. Peel.
[Monitor beeping]
Hello, young lady.
Hello, Elijah Peel.
For a second there,
I thought I was looking at
a miniature Curly
from the Stooges.
Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,
"soitainly."
Yeah.
You're too young to know that.
I watched a lot of reruns.
My name is Jessica.
What happened to you?
Well, I guess I had a heart
attack on the way to my show.
Quite rude, actually.
Yeah, I heard about it
on "Inside Edition."
Huh. They need to get a life.
They say you were
self-destructive.
Did they, now?
They said
you live life on the edge,
that you were trying
to kill yourself.
Too many girls,
too much partying.
Right.
Well, you know what I think?
I think someone's been watching
a bit too much telly.
I like your music.
Though, your last album was
a little out there.
You should go back
to your old stuff.
Right. I'll put you in touch
with the label, then.
[Sighs]
What happened to your hair?
Cancer. It'll grow back.
Okay, young lady.
Now it's really time to go.
Must you run everyone
out of here all the time?
I quite like people.
It helps me.
Besides, you know, she's...
Well, she's interesting
at least.
Well, I am interesting.
But you might not think
I'm so nice
in a few days
after I give you an earful.
Give us a few.
I'll be on my best behavior,
I promise.
-Just five minutes.
-[Sighs]
Got to quash this little girl's
delusional state.
Five minutes.
Poor thing's mental, she is.
Alright, give it to us.
I'm listening.
You don't think
Jesus loves you.
Jesus.
Why you got
to bring him into it?
Jesus is in everything,
I think.
Yeah, well, maybe that's
where you and I differ.
See? Look at the both of us.
Look where we are.
Maybe this is
where we're supposed to be.
That's just lazy, a cop-out.
I mean, what good is it
that we're here, huh?
In this place, of all places.
Looks like you got
yourself here.
Well, if he was God,
he'd change my will.
Make me different.
But he didn't, so this is
where we're supposed to be.
[Eli chuckles]
[Monitor beeping]
And why'd you say that?
Why'd you say that?
Why'd you say that?
Because if you truly
knew Jesus loves you,
then you wouldn't
purposely try to die.
Hey! Get back here!
I'm not done talking to you.
You can't just say that
and walk out!
Nurse! Nurse!
Bring her back here right now!
-[Rock] Whoa, oh, Eli.
-Hey!
Hey, hey
you gotta chill, man.
I mean, who the hell
are you talking to anyway?
That little bald girl.
Didn't you see her?
Bald? What? No.
-Listen, she's a patient here.
Go get her.
I'm not done talking to her.
No, you can't talk to anybody
right now, okay?
You're in recovery.
They told me that if you get
too excited, you could die.
Well, I don't care.
Go get her.
Find the nurse.
Bring her back here.
Well,
good morning to you, too.
-Please, Rock. Please.
-Alright. Fine. I'll go get her.
Good morning, sweetie.
Hi, Mommy.
So, the nurse told me
that you went on a walkabout
while I was out.
-How was it?
-It was fine.
But I just met Elijah Peel.
He's here, you know?
The Elijah P--
Like, the rock-star guy?
Yeah, I saw him.
He had a heart attack.
Oh, no. He's so young.
Too many girls
and too much partying.
-Where did you hear that?
-"Inside Edition."
Eli said
they need to get a life.
Oh, Eli. Huh?
He's probably right.
[Rock] Well, he is right.
Good morning.
I'm-- I'm Rock Diamond.
Elijah Peel's manager.
Uh, may I come in?
Thank you.
And you--
You must be Jessica.
And then you're her sister?
Something like that.
I'm Maria.
-Mom.
-Pleasure, Maria.
Nice to meet you.
And I hope I'm not interrupting
you two sisters, but, uh...
Well, Eli, he asked me
to get in contact with you,
and I've gotten a lot of girls'
phone numbers in the past,
but never one quite like this.
Um, he just really wants
to stay in touch with her,
and he's really adamant
about it.
And he's not as bad
as they make him out to be.
Trust me,
I have known him forever,
and, uh, well, he just--
he just loves kids, you know?
Can you please
give this to him?
Sure.
It's kind of private.
Okay.
Oh. Excuse me. No offense.
I-I need to read this
before anybody gives
anything to anybody.
Um... okay, Maria and Jessica.
So, what do you say?
Um, do I get your blessing
to have Eli and her talk?
I guess.
-I don't see any harm.
-Yay!
But you tell him
he better straighten up his act.
Yeah, right.
Like he listens to me.
Okay, young lady, I'm sure
I'll be seeing you again.
It was a pleasure
meeting both of you.
Oh, um...
If you need anything at all,
here's my card.
Cell number's right there.
Don't-- Don't hesitate.
See you later, Jessica.
[Giggles]
-Rock, we all got sick.
-Delivery for Elijah Peel.
No. That can't be right.
That's not all for me.
Yes, it is.
I'm a big fan, by the way.
One of those letters is from me.
[Chuckles]
You gotta be kidding me.
Unbelievable.
Hey, look, um, that Jessica girl
you want me to track down?
-She wanted me to give you this.
-Oh.
And her mom said it's okay
if the two of you keep in touch.
This girl is incredible.
Hey, what room is she in?
I want to see her later.
You're not gonna
see anybody.
You got to rest.
You just flatlined
three days ago.
Will you look at
the bloody time?
-Hey, Rock.
-What?
-Can you do me a favor?
-No.
Would you mind taking that
with you when you go?
-No. It's all yours.
-Bro, come on.
Hey, Rock.
-What?
-What room is she in?
Come on.
[Telephone ringing]
Hello?
[Eli] I got your letter,
and I must say, I'm touched.
So thank you... I think.
Hi, Elijah Peel.
You're welcome.
How do you feel?
-Also, it's not true, you know?
-What's not true?
What you said about me
the other night.
-Trying to die and all that.
-I didn't say it.
The TV said it.
Everyone says it.
They say you have
a death wish.
You know, girls,
drugs and rock 'n' roll.
Just so you know,
that's just a bunch of bull...
oney.
You could have fooled me.
Well,
I don't think anyone fools you.
-What's for lunch?
-Huh?
I got a lot of pull here.
What are they giving you
for lunch today?
[Sighs] Hell if I kn--
I mean...
[Clears throat]
I-I don't know.
I don't know.
And frankly, I don't care.
I think they got me
on some kind of diet, actually.
Bland chicken,
old, mealy fruit.
Yuck.
I get much better food
than that.
I even get ice cream.
Off the phone now.
Ah, the old monitor's back.
Busting my chops again.
I gotta go.
Hey, is you allowed
to stop by later
or is you under maximum
security lockdown as well?
You never know.
-Bye.
-Alright. Bye.
Wouldn't kill you to be nicer.
Good night.
I want to
get out of here, Rock.
I'm going stir crazy
in here, man. Alright?
I can do the same thing
from the comfort of my own bed.
So just do what
you got to do, man.
-Who's there?
-What do you mean?
Not you.
Hey, look who it is.
Come on in.
[Rock] Okay.
-[Eli] Hey, you.
-Well, don't mind me.
Hey, uh,
does your mom know you're here?
Yeah... Uncle Rock.
Now I'm an uncle.
Alright, you two behave.
[Eli] Never.
What you got there?
-Oh!
-I raided the fridge.
I thought you might need
a pick-me-up.
You should be asleep,
young lady.
It's almost midnight.
But seeing as I could
never get mad at a little bit
of rebellion,
that's a job well done!
Alright, let's see.
Well, wait a minute.
You only got one bowl,
one spoon.
I can't eat this whole thing.
All I have is one.
[Sighs] Well, Merry Christmas
to me, then.
Mm.
Mmm.
[Giggling]
That's bloody brilliant.
They've had me eating this bland
chicken and that old fruit.
That is incredible, that is.
I think Edy made
this particular bowl himself.
-[announcement] Dr. Forest,
dial 118, please.
-Mmm.
Dr. Forest.
It's not a he. It's a she.
Yeah. How do you know?
Did you meet him?
-Seen his picture?
-Have you?
I asked you first.
You said Edy.
You didn't say Eddie.
Edy's a girl.
If it was Eddie's ice cream,
then he would be a boy.
Mm.
Point, counter point.
I don't care.
I happen to like girls better.
Really?
You don't act like it.
I can't wait to hear this.
You don't treat women right.
Really? How so?
You treat them like toys.
Slanderous. Toys?
Yeah, toys.
It's like you play with them
and then give them away to,
like, the Salvation Army
or something
when you're finished.
Oh, that is just--
I don't-- No.
First off, you don't even--
you don't even know.
It's not like that.
[Clears throat]
I don't... [Muttering]
You should really start
thinking about settling down.
Seriously.
You're not getting any younger.
Young lady, I am 35, not 65.
I think someone's been watching
a bit too much "Dr. Phil."
And he's canceled, ain't he?
Yeah.
Well, point is, I like girls,
alright?
And I don't treat them
like toys.
I just haven't found
the right one, is all.
Maybe you're looking
in the wrong places.
Yeah, maybe.
Are you done?
Yeah.
Mm, actually, no.
It's about my Instagram post,
isn't it?
I'll have you know, it's all run
by a PR and marketing team.
I have nothing to do with it.
I wouldn't know
what the post was.
It's about the cross tattoos.
Yeah? What about 'em?
Who do you think he is?
Who?
Jesus.
Right.
Well, I try not
to think about that, actually.
And why you always got
talk to me about Jesus?
You know, there's
a whole hospital full of people
for you to go pester.
-But why a cross?
-Yeah.
-'Cause it looks cool?
-You know, it could have been...
It could have been
a multitude of other things.
But why a cross?
Yeah.
I think I'm starting
to get a little tired.
Do you even know
what it means?
Where's my nurse
when I actually need her?
Nurse. Nurse!
Nurse!
-Nurse!
-Do you believe in Jesus?
One bad day, one mess-up
and I'm getting interrogated
by some kid.
Please answer me.
I don't know.
I don't know.
[Sighs]
Anyway, I like you,
but Jesus loves you.
And he'll never leave you.
Yeah, that's what
they all say, isn't it?
You deserve
a great girlfriend, by the way.
I'll keep my eyes open.
Right. You do that!
Hey.
You gotta check out
what's happening outside here.
I mean, somehow word got out
that you're holed up here.
I mean, look at this.
You got camera crews,
there's TV stations, and there's
at least 200 women there, too.
Come on, take a look at this.
Watch.
-No.
[female reporter, on TV]
Elijah Peel is in
a private room
at St. Joe's Hospital
under close
medical supervision.
Hospital administrators
have indicated
that it will be several days
before he is out of the woods.
There is no immediate
prognosis,
just that he is recovering
from treatment.
We'll be giving you
the blow-by-blow
as superstar Elijah Peel
recovers from his horror
at the stage.
-[man] Coming up next...
-Turn the damn thing off.
...a man gets more
than he bargained for
when he falls in love--
I cannot believe you just told
the whole world where I am.
[Crowd screaming outside]
You've got to be kidding me.
Hello. Hi. Yeah.
Here's to all my fans and you,
the pathetic news media.
Oh, you want to see me?
Here you go.
Yeah, here I am. Here!
Take a look! There you go!
Now bugger off!
Trust me, I'm not worth it!
[Rock] Would you get your ass
out of the window?
I can't believe--
Hello, love.
-Sister. Um...
-[Clears throat]
I'm just doing
some morning stretches.
Physical therapy is important,
so...
[nun] I thought
you might like to say a prayer.
Yeah.
Yeah, I would love that.
Please, pray away.
[nun] Oh, Lord Jesus.
Let us pray, as we do,
for the physically
as well as the spiritually sick.
May you guide Mr. Peel
to his calling.
May you keep a watchful eye
upon him
so that he can get well
and get back to his art,
where he can give all glory
to you, o, Father.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
If you don't mind,
I would prefer to remain
in silence during prayer.
Very well. We'll leave Mr. Peel
in quiet prayer
and perhaps less exercise.
I have much work to do.
Here. Let me get that for you.
Thank you.
I'm done.
Yeah, yeah, that prayer
thing was good stuff.
No, Rock. I mean, I'm done.
And I'm just sick, man.
I'm sick. I'm sick.
And I'm out. Okay?
I'm out.
Yeah. Right.
Yeah. I quit.
No, you-- you can't.
I quit, Rock.
-No, I said you can't.
-I just did!
You can't!
Look,
I can't even pray.
Just now.
Not an ounce of anything
in my soul. Nothing!
I have no God.
I don't even know if God exists.
But I live inside my head,
inside these four walls.
And I hate it here.
I hate what I see.
I hate what I feel.
I know this, you don't,
but I do
because I live it every day.
And I am completely alone.
Just a waste of humanity, bruv.
I'm 35 and I just had
a bloody heart attack.
Who has a heart attack at 35?
I mean, I'm sure I gave you
a few as well.
You know, you were just too busy
chasing my sorry ass around
to even notice.
I got...
I gotta do something meaningful,
Rock.
'Cause right now, I am nothing.
And I'm killing myself
trying to be nothing.
It's just like you said,
you know?
You don't just walk away at
the height of your career, Eli.
I mean,
this is what you've want--
We've wanted
for the last 15 years.
You're a hit.
Do you know how hard that is?
Do you know many artists out
there would give their right arm
and their left hand
to have what you have?
You walk away, it's done.
It's over.
It's over.
And plus, in case you forgot,
we owe $5 million to the bank.
What about that?
You don't just walk away
from that, my friend.
-Watch me.
-[Chuckles] Oh, geez.
I'll pay you the five,
I have it.
This is unfreaking
believable.
You know that little girl
just down the way there?
Oh, okay. This was that
Jessica girl, really?
Oh, bugger off, mate,
it's not her.
But, you know,
she showed me something
I've never seen before.
Okay?
I have missed
so much time and opportunity.
I mean, millions of people would
give their right arm to be me.
You said it yourself.
Millions of people.
But here I am, poisoning myself,
a perfectly healthy person.
While someone like her,
who's full of life and spirit,
gets a death sentence
through no fault of their own.
Well, then change.
You're right.
You're thinking right.
But you don't quit your career
because you want to quit
your lifestyle.
[Sighs]
I just don't have it in me
anymore, Rock.
I don't.
I mean,
the whole thing has got to go.
I've got to completely
reinvent myself.
I mean, I've tried to
change before. You've seen it.
But it just-- it just always
ends the same way.
You know? I'm...
I'm sick, man.
I'm sick.
I'm scared to death,
and it's all gotta go.
All of it, man.
I'm sorry. Mr. Peel,
you have to lay down.
Mr. Rock,
I do have to ask you to leave.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm going. I'm leaving.
[Chuckles]
I'll tell you what.
Why don't you pinch me?
Because I think I'm living
some kind of
freaking nightmare here.
Eli, take the time off.
I grant that you need it.
I'm done, mate.
Just accept it.
You, uh...
You should have kept that
little bald girl away from him.
Hey, Rock.
[Rock] Eli.
I'm sorry, mate.
So am I.
I don't know where to go
I don't know what to do
...baby.
I gotta wipe you like a child.
I don't know what to feel
Eli asked me to get in contact.
I've gotten a lot of girls'
phone numbers in the past,
but never one quite like this.
Need a medical team in here
right now!
Now! Where are the meds?!
Get 'em in here!
[Echoing] He can't breathe!
I don't know what to wear
[Sighs] Yeah.
[Monitor beeping]
[Eli] Hey, there, sleepyhead.
Something's new.
Yeah. Me.
I'm new.
A new song?
[Laughs] Real funny.
A new girlfriend?
Oh, a wise guy.
I know.
A new heart.
Yeah. That's right.
A new heart.
Look, um...
I'm leaving, okay?
I'm gonna blow
this Popsicle stand.
But I want you to know
that I will always be in touch.
-Okay?
-Wait. You're leaving AMA?
What the hell is AMA?
-Against medical advice.
-Oh.
-Hospital talk.
-Right.
But where are you
exactly going?
[Sighs] Home, I think.
I don't know.
But I do know
I'm quitting the tour.
What? Why?
[Sighs]
I'm just no good
at being a rock star no more.
You know?
The parties, the girls,
all the attention.
I just don't know how
to handle it properly no more.
And the drugs and drinking.
Don't forget that part.
But can't you change without
having to stop making music?
I don't think so.
I don't know.
All I know
is I can't be this guy anymore.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Can you feel it?
I mean, what is that?
I just...
It's not exactly
Nobel Peace Prize
winning material, you know?
Yeah, but it's catchy.
It's got a good beat.
It makes people sing.
What's so bad about that?
What am I doing for humanity?
I don't know. It's...
[Clears throat]
It's-- I don't know.
Like, I can't explain it.
I just can't sing it no more.
Hmm.
Maybe God got ahold of you,
like he got ahold of me
and my dad.
No. No, no, no, no.
I don't think God's
really taking to me right now.
Now you're just being silly.
Listen, my daddy was a writer,
too, but books.
He used to write scary stories,
like horror books.
Then one day,
like, suddenly,
he stopped writing that stuff
and started writing poetry, love
and spiritual short stories.
I don't know.
My mom calls it
spiritual awakening.
A year later, he died of cancer.
I was only six,
but I still remember
how happy he was,
even though he was really,
really sick.
So maybe just don't quit.
Just take a break.
[Sighs]
How did you get to be so...
amazing, so wise?
I pray every day and ask God
questions and he answers me.
I know where I'm going
when I die is a good place.
That's why I'm not scared.
Here I am afraid
of my own shadow.
But, hey, I'm really leaving.
This isn't goodbye.
Just goodbye for now.
Okay? And I wanted to thank you
for everything.
Sweet, sweet girl.
And I want you to know
that I will call you every day.
And you call me.
You got my digits.
A lot of girls want that,
you know?
Love you, kid.
Goodbye, Elijah Peel.
["The Wild Ones"
by The Road playing]
So uptight and so on guard
Picking fights to get along
I wanna shake you,
need to shift to remake you
Oh
What's the rush?
So hasty
Smell the coffee
and taste it
Gotta get out
of those chains
Wrapped so tight,
you can't breathe
Uh-huh
Uh-huh
So I say, hey
-Hey
We are the wild ones
We are the free ones
Exercise our freedom
Eli?
Elijah Peel?
Maria. Okay, I'll talk to you.
Hey.
How's it going?
-Did you get discharged?
Uh, yeah. Kinda.
Well, not exactly, you know.
-No?
-Uh, um...
I was just getting stir crazy
in there honestly.
But apparently, I am AMA, um...
that according to Jessica.
So no worries, by the way.
I spoke with her.
Told her I'd be calling,
visiting and all that.
You will not.
What? Won't what?
Your manager
just cavalierly walks in
and requests that I allow you,
a grown man who I don't know,
but who, like, everybody else
in the planet,
perceives as a drugged-out rock
star free access to my daughter.
No, I thought that he--
You thought what?
I-- Just--
Okay, listen.
Her eyes lit up.
Which is something
that I haven't seen in a year
since this all began.
She's... dying, Mr. Peel.
Dying.
GBM is the most aggressive form
of brain cancer.
-I didn't know.
-She doesn't... [Sighs]
-This disease is brutal.
-Yeah, yeah.
Your manager said
that you love kids.
Yeah. It's like,
"How cute, how sweet.
A rock star that loves kids."
You don't know what love is.
Not until you have had it
ripped away from you.
And now you're facing...
No, I'm sorry, I won't--
I won't come visit.
-I'm sorry. I won't come back.
-No, no --
-No. It's fine.
-I'm not done.
Number one,
you will call or text me
for each and every visit.
-Every.
-Yeah.
And you will treat her
with the most respect
that you've ever mustered
in your entire life ever.
Of course.
I mean,
I promise I will treat her--
I will treat her like
the angel of God that she is.
-I'll tell you one more thing.
-Yeah.
You're gonna get
a lot more out of this
than she ever will.
I already have.
Okay.
You have my permission.
-Just call first.
-Yeah.
Promise.
-Alright.
-Thanks, Maria.
[Eli] Hi. Hey, there.
[Clears throat]
I, uh, am recovering
from a heart attack,
and I would like to hire
a nurse to come care for me
for the next week or so.
[Doorbell rings]
Good morning.
Hi.
I'm here from the service.
Right. Yeah.
I don't know
if you are right for me.
It's not you.
I'm not the right fit for this.
Um, thank you for coming.
Really, truly, I appreciate it.
-Thank you.
-[Stammering]
Well, wait, I-- I--
-[Eli] Good... ness.
-Hi. I'm Rachel. Okay.
Hi. My name is Sarah,
and I'm here with the--
Uh, excuse me.
-Hey, Elijah Peel.
-You got to be joking me.
Wait.
-Hi.
-Another one? Yeah.
What are the odds?
Thank you so much.
To all this running round
and round
I won't let my feet stick
on the ground
So let's give it a go
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Let's give it a go
Oh, oh, oh
Come on! Just a man!
Yes, I'm flying
through the crowds
Hello?
-I've been summoned.
-You're hired.
First things first.
There's cocaine
in every book on the shelf.
[Air hissing]
Huh.
Blood pressure-- 130/95.
It's a little high.
You need to bring that down.
-Arm, please.
-Yeah.
Pulse is slightly fast.
-We need to slow that down.
-[Clears throat]
You are too young to be
in this type of shape, mister.
Yeah. You're telling me.
[Pills rattling]
Here's a Bayer aspirin.
You will need to take that
for the rest of your life.
Now, I've prepared
a heart-healthy breakfast
for you.
I need you to eat it,
rest for an hour,
and then we'll take
a short walk.
Whatever you say.
I'll see you then.
Alright.
Yeah.
I think I'm having
a spiritual awakening.
I just feel completely
different is all.
A bit anxious,
but also a bit of calm as well.
I don't know, it's weird.
-Amazed I'm alive, actually.
-Hmm.
That's just how the Bible
describes our Lord Jesus
and His proactive love and mercy
for those who are lost.
[Chuckles]
Lord God, Jesus.
Proactive mercy, huh?
Yes,
it's in the book of Luke.
It's where Zacchaeus--
He was a sinner
and a tax collector.
Jesus sought him out.
And when Jesus saw him
in that tree,
he went looking for him,
looked all over the place.
[Laughs]
And he found him in his home.
And after that act of grace,
he repented.
And he was transformed.
[Sighs]
Repented and transformed.
That's right.
I have a friend-- Jessica.
You know, she speaks
the same way.
Oh, well,
then she is very wise.
Yeah. She is.
And she's only eight years old.
And dying.
Eight years old...
and dying.
Hmm. [Sighs]
Yeah.
[Soft rock music playing]
[Music stops,
cellphone rings]
Hey, yo, little girl.
I was just writing a song
with you in mind.
Oh, yeah? What's it for?
"Beauty and the Beast 2"?
Wait a second.
You said you quit music,
remember?
I did not say that.
I said I was done making
the same music
and that I was gonna
quit the tour.
Not music.
Besides, I'm bored out of my
mind in here
with nothing to do.
Literally. It's either
drink gallons of vodka
or write a song.
So you must be out of vodka.
[Chuckles] Wow.
How about you keep your day job
of being a giant pain
in my rear end?
[Scoffs]
How are you feeling, kid?
I'm good.
I kind of miss my own room,
but I'm okay, I guess.
Right. Yeah.
Well, let's get
those tests done.
We'll have you back
in your own bed soon.
I'm out of Edy's, too.
Well, the thing about Edy's,
it has a magical ability
to show up
just when you need it most.
[nurse] Hey, Jessica.
It's time for your medication.
Well, okay,
I guess I gotta go.
Alright, love.
Talk to you later.
[Somber piano music playing]
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
-Never cry
-Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
[Breathing heavily]
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Bap, bap, ba
Never cry
Never cry alone
I'm right here with you
Bap, bap, ba
[Breathing heavily]
[Monitor beeping]
[Guitar playing
soft rock song]
I'm here to set you free
Free from all
the false kings and queens
Who've been
keeping you down
Lying to your face
Trying to distract you
from my face
It's grace that frees you
to hear and to see
Truth in the water
flowing endlessly
Never thirst,
never hunger again
Oh
There is no end
You want to kill me
But you cannot fight
You want to mock me?
Oh, well, in this place
Whoo-whee!
[Laughs]
Now, that will bring even
the most wretched
right back
to the mercy of the Lord.
But I'm afraid your moves
might bring
the most righteous right back
to sin.
Hey! Stop it!
You're gonna make me blush.
I can't help it, though.
I do feel great.
And you should feel great.
Yeah. I'm gonna call Rock.
You know, I haven't
talked to him in months.
And I really think
I found the new Elijah Peel.
[Soft guitar music playing]
I woke up
In the middle of my sleep
The sounds of nails
Drive me to my knees
Waves of guilt,
unworthiness and shame
Conquered me
until I saw his face
His is not an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
Every heart sows a seed
In my weakness,
he meets my needs
Every favor born in need
His is not an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
No, it's not
an ordinary love
His is not an ordinary love
So many tears shed
Too many wrongs...
Well, well, well.
What do we have here?
[Giggling]
[Yawns] Okay, cool.
Good on that.
And, uh, I need to check...
[Yawning]
[Giggling]
...the lead. Elijah pulling up
on the right. Coming in hot.
Rrrr! There's an accident
on the field.
-Oh!
-[Giggling]
It sounds like a monkey
banging on drums.
If he only knows
how to say it
Give it to me--
Give it to me straight.
How are we looking, doc?
No?
What do you mean, "no"?
-[Giggling]
-Oh, he sees the checkered flag
-and he circles round the bend.
-Hey!
He's gonna do it again.
He's fast.
[Italian accent] Hello.
We have the best pizza
in town. You're going to love.
-[Laughing]
-Vroom, vroom, vroom.
Thank you.
-Hot, hot, hot!
-[Laughing]
Take one finger...
Across a dusty stranger
No one worthy
for a crown he gave
Now she only knows
how to save
-Freeze!
-[Laughing]
The monkey's
in the bananas.
The monkey's in the bananas.
Knows how to save
And she is my well
Is a river deep
Son of man spoke it to me
Oh, my well
Is a river deep
[Indistinct chatter]
What game are we playing?
He's my love
You must believe
And your hunger
has been relieved
Oh, his water,
it lives and it frees
No.
[Laughing]
Oh, my well
My well
It has no end
And it has no end
[Laughing]
[Rock] Hey, Eli.
Listen, I've got that meeting
tomorrow with Joe.
Where's the music, buddy?
I mean, they've been
calling me nonstop,
and we have a record
to deliver in three weeks,
-and I haven't even
heard it yet.
-Yeah. No. I'm ready.
How do you want it?
MP3's, Waves, e-mail, WhatsApp?
-Fine. Whatever.
-Well, consider it done.
Alright, look,
I'm heading into a meeting.
-I'll talk to you later.
-Wait, wait, wait.
Eli, listen, um...
is this thing cool?
I know you said it's different
than your other albums,
but, um...
How different is it?
Mancetti's got
a world-class temper.
Is he gonna throw me
out for this?
[woman] Yes, Mr. Mancetti?
Okay, I'll let him know.
Great people
are working on it.
I can't wait to see that.
I'm about to drop
my first album,
and then I'm gonna
go on tour from there.
Okay, there you go.
Good luck with that.
-Thanks.
-Can't wait to hear it.
It's gonna be awesome.
-Mr. Diamond?
-Hmm?
He'll see you now.
Oh, thank you very much.
Excuse me.
I think that's
Elijah Peel's manager.
Oh, my gosh, Rock.
It's been a minute.
-It sure has.
-How are you?
-How is Eli?
-Oh. He's amazing.
He's just doing his thing.
You know him.
Yeah. I am one of him.
Crazy artists.
So, I love your last album.
I'm such a big fan.
Oh, thanks.
Say hi to Eli for me.
[Joe] Hey, is that you, Rock?
Get in here, will you?
Uh, yeah, Joe.
It's me. Uh, look, I gotta go.
-Um, you look great.
-Thanks.
-Hey, Joe.
-Hey, buddy. How you doing?
-I'm doing great.
-Something to drink?
-Um, yeah. Water's fine.
-Alright.
Rock Water?
What, did you,
uh, get this as some kind of
joke for me or something?
Uh, maybe. Nah.
I was just down at the store,
and I saw it,
and I had to bring some in here.
I thought it was
a new business venture of yours.
No, no. I wish. I'd ask
for a commission on it.
You good? I take it
the wife is good?
You mean my ex.
Yeah. Well, this business
will do that.
Oh, yeah.
So how's Eli?
I heard he found God
or something.
You know,
he's getting stronger every day,
and, uh, you know, heart
attacks are gonna change you.
Yeah. $5 million advances
will do that, too.
I took a lot of heat for that.
You know?
His last album didn't
exactly set the world on fire,
which wouldn't have been so bad
if he actually did
some promotion,
you know, like touring.
That heart attack
may have almost killed him,
but it definitely killed us.
Between that and all
the frickin' streaming services,
you can't make
any damn money anymore,
except a tour.
Guess that sucks for you.
Yeah, well, you know,
he is getting stronger,
like I said, and he's not gonna
give us any problems.
You know, he's--
he's clean now.
I'm due a record.
-You have it, I presume?
-Yeah.
Oh, uh, Joe,
I, uh... I like this record.
It's a little different
than his other albums,
but, uh, I think
his fans are gonna love it.
You know, it's, um...
You know, it's his experience
and it's real edgy
in a spiritual sort of way.
Well, that's all warm
and fuzzy, Rock,
but his target demographic
remains the same.
They're young and carefree.
The only spirits they care about
are Jack and Daniel.
No spirit, just sex and X.
You know, Justin Bieber's
thing did pretty well.
And don't forget Kanye.
I mean, his record
was a smash, too.
[Sighs]
Alright.
[Choir singing]
Oh, Lord, please
Deliver us
Deliver me
[Eli] So, uh, there I was
as if I were
still actively using drugs
and walking down the same old
street looking for my dealer.
It was like I was
on remote control.
Like, uh,
like an autopilot or something.
I just...
I forgot about everyone.
Everything that I was trying
to become,
willing to throw it all away.
Never thirst,
never hunger again
There is no end
[Joe] Next.
You want to kill me--
Grace
Nothing,
no one can hurt me
That's the promise
he gave
Me
Though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death
Hell yeah. Yeah.
It was scary.
But you did it.
And the promise
-[Joe] Next.
Of the great I am--
Say, why do birds cry?
Why do you cry?
Why do you stay--
[Scoffs]
So it's different, huh?
"Follow me"? "Follow me"?
Are you freaking serious?
I'm afraid so.
This is a breach of contract,
Diamond.
This is death for you and Eli.
Come on, Joe.
That's a little harsh.
A little harsh? Are you
freaking serious right now?
You play this crap for me
with a straight face.
You set up a meeting with me
to play me the next pop record,
as required by Eli's contract
and instead, you play me some
"Follow me through the valley
of the shadow of death."
-Are you freaking
high right now?
-Don't shoot the messenger.
You know what?
Tell that holy roller
he's got three weeks
to get me a pop record,
or he's finished,
and I'm suing
the hell out of both of you.
I want my $5 million
plus damages.
Um, I know
this record is different--
Three weeks. Now, get out.
-Joe, could you just listen--
-Do I stutter?!
-Can I leave this with you?
-Get out!
Oh, Mama, oh, Jesus
Oh, doctor, oh, friend
Get me on the next flight
to Memphis and call Peel.
Tell him I'll be there
for a breakfast meeting.
Yeah, you got it.
Everything's not alright
And everything's not okay
I know that
I told you it was
But I didn't want to spoil
your day
Oh, Mama, oh, Jesus
Yeah. It's Rock.
I'm here to see Eli.
Oh, doctor, oh, friend
Throw me another lifeline
Ahh!
There he is in the flesh!
Ahh! Rock! [Laughs]
Eli, you look good.
Can you not, man?
I got a lot to show you, mate.
You're gonna love this.
It's gonna take a lot of time.
I got pineapple for days.
It's a long staircase, so it's
okay if you take a break.
Hattie, this is the man,
the myth, the legend.
Rock Diamond.
And, Rock, this is Hattie,
the godsend.
Mr. Diamond, it's so nice
to finally meet you.
Nice to meet you, too, Hattie.
May I offer you anything
to drink?
Some tea, coffee?
Uh, yeah, I guess coffee.
Little cream, sugar.
Perfect.
Hattie, we're gonna
head down to the studio
for a little meeting, and, uh,
we'll walk after, yeah?
Alright.
Very well, Mr. Peel.
I've never seen
this place so quiet.
Usually I have to
call the coroner
-after one of your parties.
-[Laughs]
-Yeah, it's all changing, Rock.
-Mm.
I'll tell you, I've never been
so clearheaded in all my life.
Perfect clarity,
no toxins, no distractions.
And I'll tell you what,
I've never been so creative
in all my life.
I wake up in the morning
with whole songs just ready
to record.
Like there's a little antenna
and I'm picking it up
while I'm sleeping.
And I'm turning this whole thing
into a monastery.
It's bad, Eli.
Bad?
Really bad.
[Sighs]
What do you mean?
I was embarrassed for the
first time in my life yesterday.
And all the crap that
you've done on tours and hotels
and girls and drugs,
nothing compared
to what I felt yesterday.
I was humiliated because
I knew what I played for him,
that he would never support it.
But I did it for you
because you talked me
into believing
that this was the goods.
Eli...
I hate to say it to you,
but this will never sell
if the label isn't behind it.
And trust me, this label
is not gonna push this.
I can't do this anymore.
I'm a rocker, bro.
This is not my world,
this Jesus music thing.
I-I can't...
help you
or help myself.
I can't do it.
You're gonna have to get a
new manager, and it can't be me.
I've got to live, too.
I-I've got kids.
I've got two wives, two ex-wives
that you helped make exes.
Oh, geez.
You, uh... You got Jesus,
and I got a dead career.
Something is very wrong here.
So, um...
are you sure about this,
that this is really
what you want?
You're wrong on this, man.
It is good.
But, hey, let's just say
I'm out of my mind,
and it's not.
It's who I am now.
And I'm not gonna force
some damn cheesy pop record
or whatever that even means.
Eli, I want to be
very clear on this.
Us... This...
it will all go away.
It doesn't matter
whether I'm here
or in some shack somewhere.
It don't change me.
I'm a different person
than I was three years ago.
Hell. Six months.
I'll take whatever happens
as a result
because I have peace.
And I hope
you find some, too. I do.
[Chuckles]
Look, no hard feelings
on my end
because I know
what you're left with.
And I know
how hard it is for you.
This is my new life
and I must be obedient to it.
With me, it's life or death.
Okay.
Okay.
You take care, my friend.
-[P.A. announcement]
Paging Dr. Bender.
-[Eli] Yep. Told Rock
I gotta pay back the $5 million
they advanced me.
[Jessica] Five million dollars?
Five million dollars.
Probably got to sell the house.
You-- You can stay right here
with me.
[Laughing]
Well,
that don't make no sense.
'Cause you're getting
out of here.
You've got to know that,
sweetie.
Believe in tomorrow
and know that it's beautiful,
and that you're going to thrive.
Catch your dreams.
Okay, you gotta visualize it
in the depths of your soul.
You never gave an answer
to that note I gave you.
You know?
We don't gotta
talk about that right now.
-Come on.
-I want an answer, though.
[Eli sighs]
If I said yes,
would that make you happy?
Yes.
[Monitor beeping]
Well...
Well, then you have a deal,
Miss Jessica.
Alright.
You need to get some rest,
young lady.
I think I broke this thing.
So, can I hear your music?
What, you mean that thing
that no one likes?
Oh, come on, I won't laugh.
[Chuckles] Yeah, right.
[P.A. announcement] All nurses
to the nurses' station.
-I broke it. Yeah.
-Got it. Let's...
Hey. Jessica.
Jessica, give me my phone.
"Follow Me,"
"I've Been There."
-Give it back.
-"One day..."
-It's very rude.
-"A Life Too Short."
-"Story Too Old"?
-No, no.
-Let's do that one.
-Not that one.
Can you give me my phone,
please?
[P.A. announcement]
Code blue, room 305.
Well,
if you're gonna listen to one,
listen to the "Follow Me" tune.
Though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death
I'm alive with a warrant
and your word that I've kept
My trust will not break--
Like a blind man
in the dark
Jessica.
Jessica.
-[Knock on door]
-Jessica, open the door.
Open the door!
Please, please,
please open the door.
The song's not ready.
Okay? It's not ready.
It's just a scratch
vocal track. Please.
She's in good company
My Savior said to me
Bring me your burden
Bring your hand to me...
Please, sweetie,
you got to get back in bed.
You've got to get back in bed.
Bring me your pleasures
Bring me all your gold
Open the door, sweetie, please.
[Sniffles]
Jessica, we're supposed
to have trust.
It's a-- It's a scratch vocal.
It's not even mixed yet.
It's not ready.
A life too short
Get back in bed.
And a story too old
Jessica, can you
please open the door?
Do-do-do-do-do-do
-It's not ready.
-[Sniffling]
It's just scratched vocals.
[Crying]
You weren't supposed
to hear it.
So I searched
for some good meaning
For some rhyme
or for some reason
Where's the gift?
I know there is one
Jessica, come out.
Pardon me
if I can't find it
She's in good company
My Savior said to me
Bring me your burden
What-- What are you doing?
-Where's Jessica?
-We had a moment.
Jessica.
Jessica, open up this door!
-Hi, Mommy.
-Jessica, open up this door.
-[Sniffles]
-[Maria] You need
to leave right now.
-What have you done?
-Nothing.
-Jessica.
-I didn't do anything, I swear.
-Get out!
-It's not what you think.
Get out now!
No. I was trying
to show her a song.
Get away from us.
A life too short
Oh, God, oh, my God.
-Oh, my God, oh, my God.
-No!
Sorry. I'm so sorry.
I should have never let him
get so close to us like this.
-I'm so sorry for this.
-Mommy, no.
[Crying]
He's my best friend
and now he's gone.
-What? What?
-[Crying]
He didn't do anything bad.
-He just wrote me a song.
-What?
Just wrote me a song.
[Crying]
[Dramatic music playing]
[woman] Hey, baby.
You need a light?
[man] Careful, man.
Careful.
Hey, Tony! Tony.
Hey, Tony!
Hey.
I thought you found God, man.
Go home.
Keep on walking.
Go home.
-Keep on walking.
-Tony, come on, come on.
-Keep on walking.
-Come on, mate.
Bugger off then.
[Breathing heavily]
Spoon!
No, no, no, no, no, no,
he good, he good.
I got it.
Y'all can walk.
Damn, London.
I thought you died, man.
Yeah. Not hardly, mate.
You got something for me?
I need it.
I need it now, okay?
I need it, Spoon.
Yeah. Okay.
Follow me.
Thought you got cleaned up, bro.
[Eli] I did. A few months.
[Heart beating]
Right around here, London.
-Hey, man.
-Yeah?
I thought you found God.
Spoon, I don't want
to hear that right now!
I came here for one thing,
and one thing only.
Come on, man.
Alright. Wait here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-[Door slams]
-Hey! You'll find God in here!
Hey! Spoon!
[Pounding on door]
Spoon! Open the door!
[Pounding on door]
[woman] He ain't coming back.
Who's there?!
Who's there?!
Answer me!
[woman] They call me Ro.
Spoon, he never comes back.
Not for days.
[Sniffs]
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no.
He will for me.
[Pounding on door]
Spoon!
-...some rock star?
-Unlock the damn door!
He ain't coming back.
[Foot kicking]
Spoon!
[Doorknob rattling]
Come on, man!
Get back here!
Get back here!
[Ro grunting]
This is not happening.
This is...
[Ro grunting]
No, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no! No!
Don't do this. Come on.
Don't do this.
-Don't do this!
-[Ro grunting]
Spoon! Spoon!
Get back here now!
[Breathing heavily]
Aah!
Come on!
Come on, girl. Come on!
Come on, Ro.
You're alright. Come on.
No, no. No, no, no.
Don't die, don't die!
Come on. Come on.
Spoon!
Spoon! Open the door!
Come on.
It's okay, it's okay.
There you go.
There you are.
What if he does
something bad? Gets hurt?
Okay.
Sweetie, can you hang in there
and try to rest for me?
-Can you do that?
-[Sniffles]
How long will you be gone?
I-I don't know, sweetie,
but not too long.
Okay?
You're gonna try to rest.
Please.
I will fix this.
I promise you.
Okay?
[crying]
Alright.
[Line ringing]
[woman, on phone] Maria? Hi.
How's it going?
[Maria] Hey, Tina.
It's Officer Sanchez. Listen.
-I need help locating someone.
-Pickup?
-No.
-Okay.
No, no.
Absolutely no pickup.
Just, if you get any tips,
anybody sees him,
you call me, okay?
-Okay. Yeah.
-Just call me.
Do not pick him up.
-Alright.
-It's a friend.
-It's...
-Ah.
...Elijah Peel.
[Eli] Okay. Come on.
Yeah, there she is.
There she is.
Come on.
Won't silence the noise
It's the past
[Coughs, vomits]
Oh! Come on!
Ah!
Bloody hell!
Hit the radio
Turn it up loud
Your heart is racing
to the deafening sound
Faces appear
[Eli] Geez. Come on.
From an old movie show
And you cry out loud
"Make this go"
[Breathing heavily]
But nothing mutes it
Except singing in the car
Singing in the car
Speeding so far
Away
And you don't know
who you are
And the fog
covers the stars
When you're singing
in the car...
What kind of trouble
are you getting into, Mister?
Well,
if it ain't the greatest,
probably even
the prettiest probation officer
in the city of Memphis.
What's up, Sanchez?
No trouble around here.
My probation was over
a long time ago.
Well, lucky for you,
I'm not looking for you,
or trouble.
-Just a friend.
-Mm.
You, um, seen any British guys
around here, by any chance?
Thirties, white as hell?
British.
If you value one iota of
your freedom or peace or ability
to ever walk
these streets again,
so help me, you better start
freaking talking!
Do you hear me, Spoon?
Now!
You talking about Peel?
Freakin' yeah,
I am talking about Peel.
Where is he, Spoon?!
Alright.
Get in.
Ah, there she is.
Take this.
Go find a room for a week.
Find a church.
There's hope for us still.
Uh... [Sighs]
You're young.
Get yourself cleaned up.
You got your whole life
ahead of you.
Do you want to come with?
Nah, I got nothing.
-That key you took...
-Yeah, sorry about that.
No sorries needed, rock man.
That key...
it opens the door.
Yeah, I know.
Go.
[Lock disengages]
One, two, three, four!
[Maria] Where am I going, Spoon?
Yeah, it's just up here
to your right.
[Choir vocalizing]
[Panting]
Two, three, four!
Eli!
Hey! Hey!
Eli!
Oh!
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
You're okay.
I'm an-- I'm an idiot.
I'm a total idiot.
-No.
-I feel sick
about what I did to you.
I would never forgive myself,
never,
if I hadn't have found you.
No,
I would've done the same thing.
You came in
and Jessica wasn't there,
and I was just crying
on the floor.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, okay? I owe you.
You listen to me.
You have been a godsend
these past few months.
Jessica has a sparkle
in her eye.
You did that. You!
I couldn't. I was-- I was
too wrapped up in "poor me."
You gave her a reason
to fight on.
[Voice breaking]
Don't you know that?
Maria, no.
Please, no.
It's nothing.
That song that you wrote...
Jessica played it for me.
I don't, um,
think that I have ever been
so moved in my entire life.
It may be the most
beautiful song ever written.
What a gift you have.
And what a gift to her.
I mean, you've-- You have made
her feel special beyond anything
anyone could have ever done.
And you are an amazing man.
Truly.
You wouldn't say
that if you knew what I did.
But you didn't.
Yeah, but I tried.
I really tried.
But you didn't.
And I am so glad because
it would have been all my fault,
so...
thank you.
Come on.
[Sighs]
[Eli] Well, well, well.
Look what the dog dragged in.
You suck, bruv!
You have no idea what
you left me with back there.
The hell I don't.
-What do you mean?
-Yeah,
you think
that shit was an accident, bro?
Guys.
Guys, we need to get back.
-Let's-- Let's go.
-No, no, no, no, no.
-Look, look...
-It's okay.
Eli, stay dry, man.
Ms. Sanchez,
you've always been based to me.
Y'all handle y'all business.
Let's go.
[Monitor beeping]
[Maria] Jessica?
Honey?
Look who I found.
[Gasps softly]
Hey, you.
[Maria] And I want you to know
that Eli and I
had a nice talk and...
And you never have to worry
about me being out of your life.
You can't just throw me away
like some toy
at The Salvation Army.
I never got to tell you...
but after hearing your music,
it's not that bad.
Pretty good, actually.
Keep up the good work.
Yeah, I intend to.
Well, hey,
you get some rest, sweetie.
Seems I ruined everyone's day...
per usual.
Thanks again, Maria.
I'm so sorry for everything.
I've just been numb
so long that...
I didn't realize how...
how empty I was and, uh...
just fragile.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm just gonna say it.
I see you reading
all these passages in the Bible
like it's a research book.
Bible verses projected
all on the monitors.
You singing all those hymns.
But do you even know
what they mean?
Well, at least I'm trying
to understand them
-for the first time.
-But why?
Why go there to the Bible?
Baby, what are you seeking?
Or is it just a subject
to write about?
I don't know. [Chuckles]
I don't know.
I never much cared for religion.
Didn't grow up with any.
And Jessica starts talking
about Jesus.
And after my heart attack,
I was so lost and weak.
I... guess I started opening
myself to it.
"It"? What's "it"?
God.
Jesus.
Trying to be a better person,
I guess.
I just... never thought
God liked me much, is all.
You know, my look,
my lifestyle, all that.
Hm.
Oh, no, no, baby.
Now, Jesus may not like
your lifestyle,
I'll give you that.
But he loves you.
He hates the sin,
loves the sinner.
He died for your sins,
all of our sins.
You do know that, don't you?
I mean, how could he love me?
You know? After everything
I've done to myself.
I know what they say, okay?
I read it, I hear it.
You, Jessie,
the gospel choir singer.
"To save a wretch like me."
But do you believe it?
Listen to me.
That notion of being worthy.
You? Me?
We would never be
worthy enough.
But-- and this is a big but--
our worthiness does not get us
to be with the Father,
'cause we all fall short
of his glory...
and will forever.
But, baby, it's his grace.
God the Father's grace.
Go read John 3:16.
"For God so loved the world that
he gave his only begotten Son,
that whoso believeth in him
shall not perish,
but live eternal life."
I'll see you back
at the house.
Yeah, I'll see you there.
I'm gonna keep walking
for a little bit.
Okay. Okay.
I'll see you there.
We give you all the glory
Let him feel your presence.
Glory
We give you all the glory
[Cellphone rings]
Hey, Rock. What's up, man?
I see you didn't jump.
Eli. It's great to speak
to you, buddy.
You're gonna love this.
We're gonna shove it
to Mancetti.
[Laughs] There we go, man.
That's what I'm talking about.
Oh, what's up?
What do you got for me?
I just left
the greatest meeting ever
with the head of programming
at NBC.
Completely different matter.
Anyway, we start talking
about you, naturally.
And, you know, he asked what
your next move is, et cetera.
And I kind of explain
where you were spiritually,
et cetera.
"Et cetera, et cetera"
what, man?
Get to the bloody point.
I played Jessica's song
for him.
I swear to you,
he starts crying.
-No.
-Yes!
-No.
-Yes! And he is so moved, bro.
Literally so moved.
His niece just died of cancer
and it hit him
like a ton of bricks.
And he says,
"You got to put this out."
And I said, "Look,
the label just threw me
out of their office
for playing
the exact same demo."
[Laughs]
Ah, yeah, man!
That's great. Oh!
Are you joking?
Are you blowing bubbles, mate?
You better not
be messing with me.
I kid you not.
So he buzzes his secretary
and yells,
"Get Mancetti on the phone!"
Do not.
Do not mess with me, bro.
-It gets better.
-No.
Mancetti gets on the phone
and he goes, "What's up, Bobby?"
I'm sitting right there
on speaker
unbeknownst to him.
And Bob tells him, "Hey,
I just heard 'A Life Too Short,
Story Too Old.'
-You know, Peel's new music?"
-Do not mess with me!
Are you messing with me? Uh, you
better not be messing with me.
You could hear
Mancetti's brain fizzle.
And then Bob says,
"You know,
I'm making the theme song
for a brand-new series
on prime-time Thursdays
called 'Nothing with Angels.'
And I hear you're killing
this record?
Are you nuts, Mancetti?"
I'm speechless, Rock.
Absolutely speechless.
This is sick, man!
Absolutely sick.
Look, um, I'm gonna have
to call you in a few, alright?
-Oh, wait. No. Wait.
-No, I'm visiting Jessica.
-I'll call you later.
-Come on!
Open up your eyes
[Gasps]
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, my-- Are you...
Yes. I'll take that.
-Oh. Oh, my gosh.
-This is gonna be worth
a lot of money one day, ladies.
Don't lose that.
[Woman cheering]
Why can't you
feel what I...
Hi.
Hey, sweetie.
-Hi.
-Hi, Elijah.
How are you?
You look so good.
Where...
Where's your mum?
[Wheezes, coughs]
It's okay, it's okay.
It's okay. It's okay.
-[Coughing]
-Go get them-- Now.
Nurse! Nurse! Help!
It's okay, baby.
They're gonna come help.
They're gonna help.
She can't breathe!
She can't breathe!
-I got oxygen.
-Here. Get her hooked up-- now!
[Maria] Easy. Alright.
You're gonna be okay.
Mommy's right here, honey.
[nurse] Check her lung sounds.
-Not sounding very good.
-[Maria] Slow. Slow breaths.
Come on.
Okay. It's gonna be okay.
Come on. Slow breaths.
Breathe, breathe, breathe.
Mommy's right here.
I got you.
Okay. Mommy's right here.
Mommy's right here, baby.
Mommy-- Mommy's right here.
Mommy's right here.
You're gonna make it
through this, okay?
Just...
Just breathe.
Hang in there.
Hang in there, Jessie.
Yeah, that's it, that's it.
That's it.
You got it. Breathe.
God be with you
[P.A. announcement] Dr. Navarro.
Dr. Navarro, please.
Hey.
Um...
she's not doing so good, Eli.
It's, uh-- It's not good.
Yesterday, I was so hopeless.
And then...
last night,
it was just awful, and...
Honestly, I can't fathom
how other parents of kids
deal with this, this...
slow death,
this slow torture
of their babies.
But, um-- But I...
I do--
I do have some interesting news.
Maybe.
Good?
Do you mean good?
I don't know,
but it's something.
Um, I spoke
to an old classmate of mine.
She's a specialist
in alternative therapies
and stem cell research,
and...
they are conducting
a breakthrough clinical trial.
And she got Jessica into it.
[Breathes sharply]
She says that there's
been promising early results
that children with this exact
type of cancer have recovered.
None of them in this stage of it
that Jessica's in,
but still really,
really amazing early results.
-[Breathes sharply]
-I just, um...
[Voice breaking] I don't know
if she can make it there.
That's-- That's amazing.
That's unbelievable.
It is.
It's incredible.
And, uh, I can help.
I can help in any way
you'll let me.
I have this amazing nurse.
She brought me back to perfect
health, and she can go with you.
I can line up all the travel,
cover the expenses,
the trial, everything.
I want to help, okay?
Please.
If you will let me help.
Just let me help.
-Okay.
-Please.
Okay.
Oh-ho!
There he is.
-Hey, Rock.
-Oh, my gosh.
-Good to see you.
-Good to see you, Eli.
You look ten years younger.
-Oh, funny.
-No, you do.
I feel ten years older.
Oh, come on.
You gotta feel better than that.
You look fantastic.
Alright. Hey, listen.
So I told you
that Joe was supposed
to call me that same day.
-Yeah.
-So like clockwork,
Joe gives me a call.
He says, "You know,
I've been thinking about this.
Maybe I might have reacted
a little too quickly.
You know, this whole contempt
before investigation,
blah, blah, blah."
And I said, "Do you think, Joe?"
Oh, he started
coming around, did he?
Oh, full circle.
I mean, I just spoke to him
before a meeting
and they want more.
Yeah, they want more of this.
They like this whole
spirituality thing,
this whole battling from the,
you know, bad things,
redemption and the positive
thing, all that stuff.
They want more of this stuff.
Come on. This is incredible.
It's resonating with them.
It makes me feel sick.
-Why?
It's funny, innit?
I was an outlaw
and they loved me.
And I loved being an outlaw.
Then I start writing
these original songs for me.
You know, in a way,
it was like my act of rebellion
into my own place.
Like, I got off on
the mainstream media hating it.
Right?
And now it's in
when I want to be out.
Come on.
You're not happy, Eli?
You don't know me at all,
do you, Rock?
You know what would
make me happy?
You got a pen? Alright.
-I need a jet.
-What?
Write it down.
I'm taking Jessica and
about four or five others
out to Hamburg,
and I need a medical jet--
-full gear, full staff,
and fast.
-How fast?
I'll call you tonight,
but I need it ready.
And I need it
at my beck and call, okay?
Her life is dependent on it, and
we are gonna get it for her.
Alright.
Alright. Not to change
the subject here--
And I got it all
written down here.
The med jet thing, the staff,
everything-- I got it.
Scout's honor.
I'll make it happen.
But, uh,
can I just have a couple minutes
to tell you
what's been going on,
-you know, with music?
-Go ahead, Rock.
Thank you. Alright. I need you
to do some late-night shows.
We got to promote the album,
you know.
Then I want to do a video.
'Cause
God's work ain't done
-God's work ain't done
-No, it ain't done
No, it ain't done
God's work ain't done
Fly like an angel
Keep your head
in the clouds
Reach your hand up to Jesus
[Eli] Father, I ask you
to watch over
Jessica and Maria.
I pray their safe journey
and return.
Thank you for this gift
of hope and faith.
[Rock] Eli.
[Eli] In Jesus' name. Amen.
It's time to go, bud.
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Sighs]
This last year was
the most difficult of my life...
and yet the most beautiful.
[Clears throat]
God sent an angel
down to Earth to me,
albeit with broken wings...
to heal my brokenness
and lead me to Jesus Christ.
And now we are both perfected.
When I first met her, Jessica...
she asked me to do
two things.
And I'm here to make right
on one of those requests today.
She said...
Let me just read it
so I don't bugger it up.
[Paper rustling]
"Dear Elijah, would you please
sing a song at my funeral?
It would mean the world to me.
And could you please
watch over my mummy?
Because she's the most
beautiful mummy in the world.
And I've been the luckiest girl
in the world to have her.
Thank you so much.
Love, Jessica."
[Paper rustling]
Well...
here's to honoring one
of those requests today,
my darling angel.
["Life Too Short,
Story Too Long" plays]
A soul without a savior
Searching for a home
Reached my hand out
to an angel
Don't wanna be alone
Like a blind man
in a garden
Or a seeing man
in the weeds
Had it all
with no direction
She caught me drowning
in a sea
She's in good company
"My Savior said to me"
"Bring me your burdens
Bring your hand to me
Bring me your treasures
Bring me all your gold"
Oh, a life too short
A life too short
A life too short
And a story too old
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
So I searched
for some good meaning
For some rhyme
or for some reason
Where's the gift?
I know there is one
Pardon me
if I can't find it
I baptize you in the name
of the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
My Savior said to me
We are buried with him
in death...
and raised again to walk
in the newness of life.
Whoo!
Bring me your treasures
Bring me all your gold
Oh, a life too short
A life too short
A life too short
And a story too old
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
-Do-do-do, do-do, do
-Ooh
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
Do-do-do, do-do, do
