Long December (2023) Movie Script
1
[Ticking clock sound begins]
What is it about
the end of the year,
the holidays?
You start thinking
about all these plans
that you had and these
hopes and dreams
and then you get to the end
of the year and it's like,
alright this
will be the year.
[music instrument playing]
[Gabriel Singing]
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, and all is bright
Round yon virgin,
mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night,holy night
Son of God,
love's pure light
Radiant beams
from thy holy face,
With the dawn of
redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth,
oh oh oh, ah, ah, oh, oh
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
[Announcement over
speakers in background]
It's not even Thanksgiving yet.
Maybe tone it down a little.
I stopped playing originals.
I know, but this
is not a gig.
You know?
It's background music, right?
Right.
Maybe some more variety.
Jingle Bells.
Got it.
Hey, can you work
Black Friday?
Should be fine.
Good, have a good
Thanksgiving.
You too Stewart.
[opens car door and gets in]
[Breathes out heavily]
[music plays in the background]
I think it's normal,
common, human to...
to have a dream, work for it,
hustle for it, bleed for it,
suffer for it even.
Hey Dennis.
Oh, hey Gabe. Oh yeah, hey Gabe,
can you spare a dollar?
Sure.
Here you go buddy.
Stay safe.
Thanks man, bless you,
Gabriel.
But I also think
it's human to...
wonder...
is it time to let the dream go?
[background music ends]
[People speaking indistinctly]
So, he's going to
New York without you?
That extra class this
semester kicked my ass
so I'm gonna have
to stick around,
pick up some shifts.
You sure it ain't got
nothing to do with that
mother of his you love so much?
[All laughing]
Hey you said it, not me.
Mr H.
Hey, hey Johnny
on the rocks?
Yes, sir and a Guinness.
Let me know when you want to
try that Balvenie Double Wood.
You buying?
Not tonight.
[Laughing] I didn't think so.
I'll buy you one Horace,
since Gabe's such a tight ass.
Says the man who hasn't paid
for a double in five years.
[All laughing]
You can come to our
place for Thanksgiving, Livy.
Try you some of that
deep fried turkey.
I'll be at my sister's,
but rain check on that turkey.
Man, Jackknife's
running late again.
Dude, you gotta
stop booking them.
Gabriel the
microphone's waiting.
Not tonight man.
Gabriel, play us a song.
Come on man, let's do it
Do it, come on!
Half off pints while
Gabe's on the mic!
[people cheering and clapping]
All right, all right.
Hey, the P.A. ain't gonna
quit on me this time is it?
[music instruments playing]
[people cheering]
[music instruments playing]
[singing] Oh my angel mother
help me up the hill,
I'm gonna meet the good Lord,
but I didn't write no will
'Cause all I got,
is a poor boy's legacy
I'm gonna leave to my son
Everything my daddy
left to me
Twilight I woke
Head filled with a dream
Somebody spoke and said the
past ain't what it seems
Oh my angel mother please
Tell me what to do
Well a dream fades on waking
And my life is soon
forgotten too.
[People speaking
indistinctly]
If there's only one thing
that I could sure confess
It's blaming my condition on
some other poor boy's mess
Cause all I've got is
a poor boy's legacy
I'm gonna leave to my son,
everything my daddy
left for me, left for me,
left for me, left for me
[Gabriel singing
under his breath]
[car door closes]
[Dogs barking continuously]
Hey.
Hey, he's in our room.
Oh, okay good.
Whoa, is this all one order?
No, I posted that
"Order Before Black Friday"
deal and it worked,
I mean it really worked.
Yeah, holy shit,
that's awesome babe.
I know, right?
Yeah, hey so sorry
I had to work.
It's fine.
He nursed at seven
and he went down fine.
Okay, good.
How was work?
It was whatever, played
a song for the same 10 people.
What's wrong with that?
Pub ain't the dream, babe.
And how was the mall?
Oh, what do you think?
[Jamie laughs]
[Making funny noises]
Where you wanna go?
Let's go to Phoenix.
[Making driving noises]
Seattle?
[Making driving noises]
[Singing and playing
the guitar]
You sure you and Beau
don't want to come with?
We can walk through the
park after the post office.
We're good, thank you though.
All right I'm gonna go by the
thrift store for the shop after.
Okay see ya.
Bye Beau.
[makes funny sounds at the baby]
[sings to baby]
Just me and you
What do you think of this song?
A holy grail, a fairy tale,
A white whale on the end
of the line
Pretty good?
Yeah?
Best thing you've ever
written dad. It's the best.
When do you gotta
let the dream
[Writing lyrics and
playing the guitar]
When do you gotta let
the dream go?
When do you gotta let
the dream go?
If I'm crazy,
would you even let me know?
I don't think you would.
How much longer
cause I'm not
getting any stronger
Is that cheesy?
You like that?
Maybe I'm just getting old
Is it... that?
Hope is just too heavy to hold
[Phone vibrates]
Mr. D.K. himself.
[Laughing] Gabe,
what are you up to?
Oh man, you know, just
working on some music here.
All right. Anything good?
Anything I need to hear?
It's feeling pretty good.
We'll see.
Y'all about to wrap
up the tour, right?
Yeah, man.
Taking off for Thanksgiving
and then close it out
here at home on Saturday.
Nice.
Yeah, well, we got tickets
for Saturday night.
But are y'all, are y'all
coming to Grandma's Thursday?
Get to meet Beau.
Yeah man.
Finally, I can't wait.
Hey, listen, I
wanted to ask you,
Danny's going home
for the holidays,
and it really doesn't make sense
for me to fly him back.
I figured since we're
closing things down right
here on Saturday, maybe
you can come out
and back me up on
keys and vocals.
Hell yeah!
Like old times.
Yeah, man that's
what I'm saying.
Hell yeah,
that'd be great.
All right, all right.
Well, I'll send you the
new stuff and we'll do
a practice on Friday,
if that works for you.
Yeah, no, that sounds awesome.
Um, do y'all have an
opener for this tour?
Like if y'all need it I could,
I would be happy to do
just a small acoustic set.
Keep it really chill.
Oh, man, the bill's
pretty stacked.
But you know what?
Maybe I can do
you one better.
Maybe you can do one
of your songs during
my set with the full band.
The house will be full.
Dude!
Yes, absolutely.
That'd be awesome.
All right, well, my manager
Alan's gonna be there
and it might be good
for him to hear you.
Yes.
Thank you.
Thank you, man.
That'd be great.
Well, pick something
and we'll rehearse it
Friday with the guys.
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
I'll send something
over as soon as I can.
All right, we'll see
you at grandma's.
All right see you on Thursday.
Bye.
What?
Yes!
Yeah, his manager is going
to be there, Alan Thomas,
the guy I told you about.
Oh, that's awesome babe.
Yeah, he reps
Fortune Teller,
Thousand Dollar Movie,
a bunch of legit guys.
Okay, so what song
are you gonna play?
Probably an older one.
It's just the one rehearsal
and it's on Friday
and I'll need to cancel
at the mall anyway.
I'm sure you're
bummed about that.
Yeah.
Darren will pay you right?
Yeah, yeah, he'll pay me
but like the exposure is
going to be killer, I'll be
able to sell some merch,
kind of something
I would do for free.
And you're killing
it on Etsy anyway.
I mean, listen,
I'm excited,
a crowd like that,
it seems awesome.
I mean money or no,
but I'm not exactly
killing anything yet.
Hey everybody, it's
Darren Knight here.
So excited to close out
the tour here at home on
Saturday at the Sparklight.
We got a few tickets left
and you're gonna want to
grab those real quick
because our very own Gabe
Lovell is going to be
a special guest.
I know you guys
have missed him,
we've definitely missed him.
Come on out to Saturday.
Link is in the bio.
We'll see you there, peace.
[Clicking sounds]
[Music playing on screen:]
My cocoon is getting tight
White moon calling me out
Trees bow towards my shadow
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Everybody give it up
for Gabe Lovell.
Tell him how much you love him.
Tonight's his final
show with us.
I know he's got an
incredible journey ahead.
Give it up ladies
and gentlemen.
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Hey Gabe, man,
I'm so proud of you for stepping
out and pursuing the dream.
You're gonna be bigger
than me someday.
I love you man.
Dream big
[Music continues]
[Music stops]
[A family speaking indistinctly]
Hey, great to see you
How are you doing?
Hey buddy...
[overlapping conversations]
Oh, there they are!
[Gabriel and woman singing]
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
[Speaking indistinctly]
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly, sweetly
through the night
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their brief delight
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains
prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your
heav'nly song?
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo
[background conversations]
They gotta change it up.
They're just running the same
place over and over again.
Thought about my offer?
I could use the help
starting January,
put you on salary
as soon as you want.
I appreciate it man.
It's just, it's so nice
at the pub you know...
just take off for gigs
and recording.
That's not a problem,
I mean we can work
something out.
We're not trying to
kill your dreams.
[Singing] In excelsis Deo
[Clapping]
Mike asked me again
about working for him...
laying tile...
start after the new year...
full time.
It'd be pretty steady.
Might be a blessing,
not a compromise.
[Baby coos]
[Singing]
I pray you wake up in
the morning with a smile
May your dreams be
what the angels see
Dream my baby,
dream my baby, dream
I'll leave the candle burning
Till there's nothing more,
Never walk away,
Never close the door
Dream my baby,
Dream my baby, dream
[Jamie and Gabriel singing]
I pray you wake up
in the morning with a smile
May your dreams be
all that you can see
Dream my baby,
dream my baby, dream
oo oo oo oo oo oo
oo oo oo oo oo
Night Beau.
Goodnight Beau.
Hey, hey, hey,
look who I found
[Excited chattering]
How's it going?
Great, how's the baby?
Terrible [All laugh]
No, it's great.
Dude, how's your kid?
Growing [Laughter,
overlapping conversations]
Boy, are you behaving?
I'm trying.
You know we're closing
the tour down
here at home and I thought
it'd be kind of sweet
if Gabe filled in on keys
for old times' sake.
You know, I think
we're gonna let him do
one of his own songs too.
Think it'd be real special
for the hometown crowd and
yeah, yeah special for us.
So, I'll connect back with
you guys in like 20 minutes?
Yeah, okay cool.
[Band practices music]
I was thinking we could,
because on the record
there's not any base until
the very end, so
for the live thing,
I think it'd be cool...
before I...
and then you go like
[Plays guitar]
Like high like that and then...
yes, yeah...
You'll come in with the
groove right away...
Just start building
back in ...
and then you're off
to the races.
For the intro since we don't
have the strings and stuff...
Right.
...what if I just did
like a kind of open drone thing.
That's awesome.
Yeah just start off
with that with me...
Yeah
Yeah, vibe for days
[Band playing instruments]
Yeah...
Y'all up for trying it
real fast?
Living in the borderland
You gotta fight like a boy
Gotta run like a man
Living in the borderland
Gotta take what you get
just to get what you can
Are we all dangerous
Are we all dangerous
Lost boys shoring up pockets
full of fairy dust
Suffering the wanderlust
They all get crushed
without love
By the law, the
law of the jungle
Help me Holy Jesus
Won't you show me how to live
I've got monsters
at my table I've got
Bibles bent like shivs
Help me Holy Lord I see the
light of heaven's porch
But so many of us are
born here outside
No, I know you don't know
who he is right now but in
six months you are going
to know who he is,
that's why we have
to book it now.
What's up Alan?
That's okay.
But I'm going in now.
I have to go.
[crowd cheering
as the song ends]
Ladies and gentlemen have
I got a treat for you.
Would you give it up
for my good friend
and cousin Gabe Lovell!
Give it up!
It's all you baby.
Thanks Darren for having me
close out the tour with y'all
and thanks everybody for coming.
[Gabriel playing the guitar]
Wild horse running north
Seeing faces of the old
Waterside, moon light
Broken hands and heart of gold
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh
Miles to go, miles to go
Before I sleep
Before I lay my head,
before I lay my head
And fall in the deep,
Color now, wonder how
Dusk and dawn,
could be so far
Naked trees,
winter freeze Truth is
here to light up the dark
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
I will carry on
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
I will carry on
oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh
My love
Miles to go, miles to go,
before I sleep
Before I lay my head,
before I lay my head
And fall in the deep
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on, I will
carry on Raise your head
and I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
we will carry on
Oh mine, you're mine.
you're mine, oh mine
You're mine, you're mine
[Crowd cheering]
Thank you, thanks Darren
for having me.
Happy holidays everybody.
[Crowd clapping and cheering]
Look, I love Alan,
but he's all business.
At the end of the day,
he's just taking advantage of
my 20-year grind anyway.
Right.
And I'm just being honest.
I'm just being upfront with you.
And these days, you
gotta get the algorithm
working for you or
you're invisible.
Yeah, I hate the algorithm.
And two decades
in and I'm still,
I'm just now able to start
saving for my kids' college,
and you know what?
I gotta stay on the
road to do that.
I don't have the option
to get off the road.
But like, think about
what you did in there,
like you walked
out on that stage,
and you made a real connection
with real human beings.
It doesn't get better than that.
Seriously, that's
what it's all about.
There he is.
Hey buddy, how are you?
Good to see you.
Dude, fantastic.
Thank you.
That was so great.
Thank you, thank you
so much for coming.
Of course, I'm not
going to miss this,
the last day of the tour.
Absolutely.
One of the best
ones for sure.
Thank you so much It's an
awesome way to end it.
Wow.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
Of course.
Hey, this is
my cousin Gabe.
Yes, Alan Thomas
Nice to meet you brother
Nice to meet you.
You were awesome.
Wow.
Thank you Really,
really good.
I appreciate it brother.
Yeah, I loved it.
I'm a little drunk.
But that's...
[Gabe and Darren laugh]
But it was good.... Yeah,
it was great.
Alan owns a piece of a
couple of the best studios
in Nashville and I bet
he'd hook you up.
Yeah, sure.
Of course.
You sure?
[Laughing] Yes,
you're excellent.
If you're in Nashville
and need space or time
or anything like that,
I'll hook you up.
Thanks, man.
I have to head before you give
any more of my things away,
but I love you.
Yep.
Great job.
Great job.
Get some rest
for the holidays.
And the Hulu thing
for Bright Abyss,
they want to do that
for the TV Intro.
All right.
So we'll
figure that out.
And really nice
to meet you dude.
Thank you brother.
Yeah.
And yeah, for real,
just give me a shout.
I'll help you out if
you're ever in town.
I will.
Later fellas.
You need to do that.
You think he might sign me?
Man, he probably
won't even be there.
But what you did
out there tonight,
on that stage,
that's the dream man.
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year
Good tidings we bring to
you and your kin
[Announcement over
speakers in background]
Good tidings at Christmas...
Should auld acquaintance
be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance
be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne;
My Angel Gabriel
Hey Dennis, sorry
I don't have any cash today.
Well no fame, no fortune,
no future, no freedom...
Dennis, you all right?
You want a burger
from the kitchen?
No future, no freedom...
Bless you Gabriel, you angel.
We twa hae run about
the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd
mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness
yet For auld lang syne.
What'll you have sir?
All right what is a, what's
like a good Scotch?
Like a top shelf?
Ooh we have a lot of the
Speyside single malts,
MacAllan 15 year,
the Glenlivet 12 year,
the Tacallister 10 year....
good stuff
Let's do the first one.
Perfect, good choice.
Add a little splash of Coke
in there if you don't mind.
Coke?
Yeah, just like
[makes sign of a pinch]
... take the edge off.
You don't want Coke in that.
What if we did like a
well Scotch instead?
Let's just get you
something cheap
You serious?
You don't want to
put Coke in this.
Don't be that bartender.
I know what I'm talking about.
Hey, the best Scotch makes
the best mixed drinks.
Right Gabe?
Just give him what he wants
Hey I don't appreciate that.
[Auld Lang Syne
continues in background]
[Train rumbles]
Hey guys
this is Gabe,
Um, hoping you're having
a great Christmas...
Hey guys this is Gabe. Hope
you're having a great holiday...
Hey everyone,
this is Gabe,
just working on
this new song,
Thought I would play
it for you...
[playing the guitar
and singing]
A holy grail, a fairy tale
White whale on
the end of the...
Hey guys this Gabe,
gonna play this song,
everyone
[playing the guitar
and singing]
Holy grail, fairy tale
White whale on
the end of the line
This is stupid...
I got off the phone with
Alan's guy, studio dude.
Said everything is booked
up unfortunately
except for a few days
before Christmas.
But everything
will be at cost,
it'll be a killer deal.
Would you take
anyone with you or...?
No, I wouldn't need to.
He's got a bunch of
Nashville dudes there,
killer guys, played
on a bunch of records.
That's cool.
That's what I'm saying.
Still a lot of money...
Yeah...
Love you...
Go home buddy.
Yeah?
[baby sounds]
Okay.
I gotta, I gotta try,
you know,
cause if I'm playing
at the mall
this time next year?
I don't know.
But I got to try.
I have to...
...or just shut up
and lay tile I guess.
I mean, I don't,
just because you lay
tile doesn't mean you
have to shut up.
What...
...who... I mean...
What is it with men?
It's like all or nothing.
It's so...
I don't know,
"gotta leave my mark on
this world
or I'm worthless."
That's you by the way.
Yeah, I got that.
We don't really
get that option.
You know, it's
called multitasking.
What do you
think Beau Bear?
Should daddy go to Nashville
and sing some awesome songs?
I think you should do it,
I want you to go.
I am your first fan here,
we started the fan club
you should know.
And I plan to be your
last fan and I do want
the world to love what
you do the way that I do.
But you have to know that
it's worth something...
even if you don't get
rich and famous doing it.
Also, do you think your
piece of shit Jeep is
gonna make it
to Nashville?
I was gonna
borrow the Prius.
Yeah, yeah, I knew it...
[background music]
I think the last time
I was in Nashville,
I forgot what tour it
was but we were having
a killer show,
did the whole set,
everybody did great,
and then during
the encore Darren slipped
and fell into the drum kit.
It was like watching
your grandma fall.
He's so tall and he hit
every drum on the way down.
Especially because I was
behind the keyboard
and I was trapped.
I just watched him
go, like a tree.
He played it off
super well
and just laughed about it.
That was a real
human moment
[background music]
Let's try this time,
instead of the four on
the floor we do that more
of a groove at the end of
that last solo
section, whatever,
and then play it
out after that...
That good for y'all?
Yes.
Let's try it...
One, two, three four five.
[playing the guitar]
A holy grail,
a fairy tale,
A white whale on
the end of the line
Days are spent,
making rent
Trading blows
against the grind
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just
getting old,
This hope is just
too heavy to hold
A second glance,
a new romance,
Same old song and dance
The days are done,
for the setting sun,
Just give me one
fighting chance
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
What's up dude?
What's going on?
[Singing]
If I'm crazy,
would you even let me know
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger?
Who's that?
That's Gabe Lovell.
Oh right, right, right...
[Gabriel singing]
Hope is just too heavy
How did I let
so much time go past
I had a vision
and I held fast
Tell me the story
how the stars were made
When the dreamer's song
was played
[Instruments playing]
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know,
Would you tell me
how much longer?
I'm not getting stronger
Maybe I'm just getting old
Hope is just heavy to hold
Hey did you write that?
Uh, yeah I did.
Ain't you a little
young to write
something like that?
I've been around.
Is there food here?
Yeah.
Let's take a break,
grab something to eat.
Okay.
So, what's the dream Gabe?
Oh, you know,
write some music,
record, play a little bit.
Cover of Rolling Stone?
Yeah, if I'm lucky.
Yeah, that is
the word for it.
Talent and hustle, I mean
they get you started
but luck really takes
you there and that's
if you're lucky.
You know, most people
don't have the heart
to know it or handle
it when they're not.
Yeah, I just want
to play music.
Then just play it...
for people who want
to listen to it.
You know,
take these songs,
get them out there.
Don't take out a loan
to make a record
that's going to take
10 years to pay off....
Because this isn't
the story
where the manager
discovers you
and you make it big.
I rep over 20 artists,
five of them you've
heard of, three of
them make a living,
one of them makes
a good living...
and then the rest
are gifted, talented,
sometimes more talented.
Some of them are still
trying to make it,
others have already quit,
some people write and
record and play in
between their day jobs.
So, if you just want
to play then just play.
Ain't you ever
had a dream?
Yeah, I did, and it
wasn't managing
rock stars.
But not everybody
can be lucky.
Come on, I want to,
I want to take
you somewhere.
Yeah?
Okay.
[Auld lang syne playing]
I can already hear
him in there!
Hey, buddy,
what's going on?
Been a minute, man.
Good to see you.
You look good.
This is my buddy Gabe
from out of town.
Hey bud.
There he is.
Oh hey.
Hey...
Alan!
How are you?
Good to see you.
Good to see you.
This is my buddy Gabe.
He's coming in from
out of town.
Gabe?
Gabe.
Gabe, nice to meet you.
What are you drinking?
I'll do a Bulleit
on the rocks.
Me too, same.
[Crowd cheering and clapping]
That's Brody Duveau.
A buddy of mine
manages him.
He's been doing
this forever,
but he's only got
like 50,000
Spotify listens
a month or something.
Bulleit on the rocks...
[Brody sings]
Saturday in the rain
Sipping on lemonade
Speeding down
the country lane
Every Saturday morning,
Brody wakes up to a drunk
voicemail from
his dad just
ripping into him.
"You're never
gonna make it,
join corporate America",
all that stuff.
But every Saturday
night he shows up, ya know?
Brings the house down,
doesn't matter
if it's a packed club
or an empty bar
or whatever.
It doesn't matter.
He's here doing that.
[Brody continues singing]
Cause it don't mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta do something
To keep you around,
to keep you around
Cigarettes, coffee beans
Reading your magazines
He hasn't made it yet?
He's trying.
He's got a couple of
good opening slots.
He's licensed some TV
music for some tween crap
or something.
But you know,
you walk down
Broadway, there's
a million of them
and they're all just
as talented.
It's an embarrassment
of riches
without the riches part.
It doesn't matter because
Brody's not doing it
for the money.
He's doing it
for his dad,
prove that asshole wrong.
'Cause it don't mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta do something
To keep you around,
to keep you around
It's the American Dream
The American Dream
Can I put a little
Coke in this?
Thank you.
Just takes the edge off.
Yeah, I hear
the best whiskey
makes the best cocktail.
Hey, Warren, Warren...
Alan, how ya doing?
Good to see you.
Come to check out Brody?
Yeah, totally.
I wanted to show
my buddy Gabe
some of Nashville's finest.
Gabe Lovell.
Warren Oats.
Yes, yes like the actor.
It was my stage name
in the 90s and it stuck.
Yeah.
He owns the joint.
Okay. Good deal.
Do you perform?
Yeah, a little bit
and I also write.
Yeah, we're recording
right now but you should
book him here,
he'd totally kill.
I'll send you over
some of the stuff
we're working on.
I'd love to hear it.
You guys sticking around?
Yeah, all night buddy
I'll see you later.
Cheers.
He's a nice dude.
'Cause it don't
mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta, I gotta,
I gotta do something
to keep you around,
to keep you around
It's the American Dream
The American Dream
I'd do anything for
the American Dream
The American Dream
I'd do anything for
this American Dream
[Singing ends]
Thank you so much,
thank you, thank you,
merry Christmas.
- - Alan: I love you!
[Brody resumes singing
in background]
I had three albums each
with a top 10 single
and I was broke.
Label screwed me,
killed the dream for me,
so I quit.
But in six months
you are gonna know who he is...
Like, just quit quit?
I had a two-year-old
at home.
I figured, I don't know,
I'd take over my dad's
dry-cleaning business
or run my aunt's
restaurant or something.
Then I realized that
everything that I'd
learned in the music
business the hard way
I can just bank
that as tuition.
I had all this new
knowledge that that
led me to a future that
I wouldn't have
envisioned myself.
Like, I had a dream,
and it was one way
and when it got destroyed,
I realized that
it didn't have
to be binary.
Sometimes a broken dream
can become a new dream.
After all that what
did you end up doing?
Went back into the
music business,
but not as an artist.
I became a
concert promoter,
learned where the real
money was being made
and then made a path for
younger artists to move
and not fall into
the same ditches
that I fell in.
I retired last year,
bought this place.
Got three more.
This is actually
the smallest.
Damn.
Tom Cochrane had it wrong.
Life ain't a highway.
It's an open meadow.
Run free.
[Crowd clapping
and cheering]
Thank you so much!
Merry Christmas,
we love ya!
[Car door shuts]
Alright, Kevin sent you
the rough mixes?
Yeah, yeah,
they're on my phone.
Okay, great.
You need any help mixing
that, just let me know.
Man, thank you.
You've done too
much for me.
Oh dude,
it's my pleasure.
Don't worry about it.
But remember, don't go
broke making a record.
Okay?
I'll hook you up,
it's not a race.
Those guys,
chasing a finish line,
they spend their
whole lives running.
Yeah?
You sound like my wife.
[Laughs]
Brother, you got a wife
that says that to you?
You've already won.
I'm out of here.
All right bud.
I'll let you know
if anything comes up
in the area, opening slots,
anything like that, cool?
Man, thank you.
Yeah.
Drive safe.
Yes sir.
Snowing in Nashville...
See you bud.
Later.
[Car door shuts]
[Windshield wipers working]
[background music playing]
[cars passing on the highway]
Hey.
Hey.
You still up?
Yeah, just finishing
some last-minute
Christmas orders.
Come here.
You're a machine.
How was it?
It was actually
really good.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Did Alan make all
your dreams come true?
No, you and Beau did that.
Speaking of which, I was
thinking on the way home,
remember, how we talked
about getting a house?
Let's get one of
them houses.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, let's get you out
of this living room
and get you a proper
work spot.
Yeah?
Yeah.
A house...
house people...
Not a big house.
We're house people.
Don't get cocky.
We're house people.
Yeah let's get a house.
You like that?
Yeah, I like that.
I really like that.
[Gabriel singing in
the background]
What is it about
the end of the year?
You start thinking
about all these plans
that you've had, and
these hopes and dreams.
Maybe the holidays are
about not looking
in the past
or in the future
but like right here,
right in front of you.
Like you Beau.
This year I got you.
[Singing in the
background continues]
And if, if you were
ever to ask me, "Dad,
what was your dream?"
I'm gonna say I'm
looking right at him,
I'm looking right at him.
[Singing stops]
Still working on it
Beau, take it easy.
Hey Dennis...
Dennis...
Dennis!
Hey.
It's Christmas Eve man,
you got somewhere to stay?
Yes sir, I'll be fine.
Can you spare a dollar?
Sure, bud.
This all gonna go to booze?
It's all I got,
Gabriel,
it's all I got.
Hey come with me,
come on.
It'll be fine, come on.
[Christmas music plays
in the background]
Here you go,
a seat for Dennis.
You good?
Give my buddy Dennis
here a pint on me.
Here you go sir.
Hey...
Welcome sir.
Happy Christmas to you.
Happy Christmas.
[Christmas jazz music plays
in the background]
Hey, hey!
Hey what are
you doing here?
I came to see my cousin.
Man thanks.
Yeah man.
Olivia, this is
my cousin Darren
I was telling you about.
Good to meet you.
I'm a big fan.
Awe, thank you.
That's so sweet.
That's Darren Knight.
...say the best
whiskey makes
the best cocktails.
[laughter]
Yeah, his studio
guys killed it.
Yeah, he called me, he
said you did really well.
No, I felt really
good about the songs.
Just gonna get them mixed
and put them out
and maybe get lucky.
Here's to luck.
Here's to luck.
I can't think of a
better way to bring
in the holiday than with
some live music from
Mr. Darren
Knight himself.
Duke, leave him alone.
Come on up here man.
Hey, I'll play one
if Gabe will
play it with me.
[All cheering and clapping]
Yeah.
Get it, Gabe.
Come on.
All right, let's go.
Guys, Darren Knight is
about to perform
a live set at
Connolly's right now.
Okay.
Testing one, two.
[Sounds of the P.A.
breaking]
Testing one.
[Sounds of the P.A.
breaking]
Duke, fix the P.A.
It's not me, bro.
[Crowd booing]
All right you want to
hear a song?
[audience screams]
Come on Darren,
what you wanna do?
It's your house man,
your show.
Let's, let's do Man on
the Millionth Mile,
bar style.
All right.
I'll follow you.
[Gabriel and Darren
start playing guitar]
You got it, let's go!
Baby don't break the rules
Or you break my heart
You play the fool
But that's not your part
Cause you ain't no
gambling girl
You ain't no
cheating child
You are the lady
who still loves me
I am the man on
the millionth mile
I walked across the desert
Scaled the mountain top
Tracked you to the city
Wondering if your feet
would ever stop
Cause you ain't
no cheating child
You are the lady
who still loves me
I am the man on
the millionth mile
Hold it down for me.
[Gabriel plays harmonica]
[crowd cheering]
That's Gabe Lovell
ladies and gentlemen!
[all singing]
Long lay the world
in sin and error pining
Till He appeared, and
the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope
The weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new
and glorious morn
[all singing]
Fall on your knees,
oh hear the angels voices
Oh, night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Oh, night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Fall on your knees
oh hear the angels voices
Oh night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Oh night...
Go!
...divine
[crowd cheering]
oh night, oh night divine
[crowd cheering]
It's 12:03.
Merry Christmas to you all.
[crowd shouts
"Merry Christmas"]
Merry Christmas bro.
Merry Christmas bud.
Love you bro.
Love you too.
[singing]
Oh come let us adore him,
[Crowd joins]
Oh come let us adore him
Oh come let us adore him
Christ the Lord.
Merry Christmas everybody.
[crowd replies
"Merry Christmas"]
[background music plays]
[baby coos]
Merry Christmas babe.
Merry Christmas.
How was it at the pub?
Like a dream.
[background music plays]
Hey everyone,
it's Gabe,
hope you had
a good New Year's.
I know I did.
Listen I want to tell you
guys about a new single
I got coming out.
We just got the
masters back...
they're sounding so good.
Special thanks to everyone
at Brick House Studios,
and my boy Alan.
Yeah, just wanted to show
you all the new single,
Heavy Hope.
Hope you enjoy it thanks.
One, two, three, four.
[music begins]
[singing] A holy grail,
a fairy tale,
A white whale on
the end of the line
Days are spent,
making rent
Trading blows
against the grind
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just
getting old
Hope is just
too heavy to hold
A second glance,
A new romance
Same old song and dance
The days are done,
for the setting sun
Just give me one
fighting chance
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer?
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just getting old
Hope is just too heavy
How did I let
so much time go past
I had a vision
and I held fast
Tell me the story
How the stars were made
When the dreamer's
song was played
[Instruments playing]
Sometimes you gotta
let your dreams go
Even though the night
roads look narrow
But when the morning
sun is bright,
I can see it in the light
These roads look more
like open meadows
I hear the dreamer's song
I've heard it all along
I can carry on
With this heavy hope
[baby coos]
[Crowd cheering]
[music playing]
[Ticking clock sound begins]
What is it about
the end of the year,
the holidays?
You start thinking
about all these plans
that you had and these
hopes and dreams
and then you get to the end
of the year and it's like,
alright this
will be the year.
[music instrument playing]
[Gabriel Singing]
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, and all is bright
Round yon virgin,
mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night,holy night
Son of God,
love's pure light
Radiant beams
from thy holy face,
With the dawn of
redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth,
oh oh oh, ah, ah, oh, oh
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
[Announcement over
speakers in background]
It's not even Thanksgiving yet.
Maybe tone it down a little.
I stopped playing originals.
I know, but this
is not a gig.
You know?
It's background music, right?
Right.
Maybe some more variety.
Jingle Bells.
Got it.
Hey, can you work
Black Friday?
Should be fine.
Good, have a good
Thanksgiving.
You too Stewart.
[opens car door and gets in]
[Breathes out heavily]
[music plays in the background]
I think it's normal,
common, human to...
to have a dream, work for it,
hustle for it, bleed for it,
suffer for it even.
Hey Dennis.
Oh, hey Gabe. Oh yeah, hey Gabe,
can you spare a dollar?
Sure.
Here you go buddy.
Stay safe.
Thanks man, bless you,
Gabriel.
But I also think
it's human to...
wonder...
is it time to let the dream go?
[background music ends]
[People speaking indistinctly]
So, he's going to
New York without you?
That extra class this
semester kicked my ass
so I'm gonna have
to stick around,
pick up some shifts.
You sure it ain't got
nothing to do with that
mother of his you love so much?
[All laughing]
Hey you said it, not me.
Mr H.
Hey, hey Johnny
on the rocks?
Yes, sir and a Guinness.
Let me know when you want to
try that Balvenie Double Wood.
You buying?
Not tonight.
[Laughing] I didn't think so.
I'll buy you one Horace,
since Gabe's such a tight ass.
Says the man who hasn't paid
for a double in five years.
[All laughing]
You can come to our
place for Thanksgiving, Livy.
Try you some of that
deep fried turkey.
I'll be at my sister's,
but rain check on that turkey.
Man, Jackknife's
running late again.
Dude, you gotta
stop booking them.
Gabriel the
microphone's waiting.
Not tonight man.
Gabriel, play us a song.
Come on man, let's do it
Do it, come on!
Half off pints while
Gabe's on the mic!
[people cheering and clapping]
All right, all right.
Hey, the P.A. ain't gonna
quit on me this time is it?
[music instruments playing]
[people cheering]
[music instruments playing]
[singing] Oh my angel mother
help me up the hill,
I'm gonna meet the good Lord,
but I didn't write no will
'Cause all I got,
is a poor boy's legacy
I'm gonna leave to my son
Everything my daddy
left to me
Twilight I woke
Head filled with a dream
Somebody spoke and said the
past ain't what it seems
Oh my angel mother please
Tell me what to do
Well a dream fades on waking
And my life is soon
forgotten too.
[People speaking
indistinctly]
If there's only one thing
that I could sure confess
It's blaming my condition on
some other poor boy's mess
Cause all I've got is
a poor boy's legacy
I'm gonna leave to my son,
everything my daddy
left for me, left for me,
left for me, left for me
[Gabriel singing
under his breath]
[car door closes]
[Dogs barking continuously]
Hey.
Hey, he's in our room.
Oh, okay good.
Whoa, is this all one order?
No, I posted that
"Order Before Black Friday"
deal and it worked,
I mean it really worked.
Yeah, holy shit,
that's awesome babe.
I know, right?
Yeah, hey so sorry
I had to work.
It's fine.
He nursed at seven
and he went down fine.
Okay, good.
How was work?
It was whatever, played
a song for the same 10 people.
What's wrong with that?
Pub ain't the dream, babe.
And how was the mall?
Oh, what do you think?
[Jamie laughs]
[Making funny noises]
Where you wanna go?
Let's go to Phoenix.
[Making driving noises]
Seattle?
[Making driving noises]
[Singing and playing
the guitar]
You sure you and Beau
don't want to come with?
We can walk through the
park after the post office.
We're good, thank you though.
All right I'm gonna go by the
thrift store for the shop after.
Okay see ya.
Bye Beau.
[makes funny sounds at the baby]
[sings to baby]
Just me and you
What do you think of this song?
A holy grail, a fairy tale,
A white whale on the end
of the line
Pretty good?
Yeah?
Best thing you've ever
written dad. It's the best.
When do you gotta
let the dream
[Writing lyrics and
playing the guitar]
When do you gotta let
the dream go?
When do you gotta let
the dream go?
If I'm crazy,
would you even let me know?
I don't think you would.
How much longer
cause I'm not
getting any stronger
Is that cheesy?
You like that?
Maybe I'm just getting old
Is it... that?
Hope is just too heavy to hold
[Phone vibrates]
Mr. D.K. himself.
[Laughing] Gabe,
what are you up to?
Oh man, you know, just
working on some music here.
All right. Anything good?
Anything I need to hear?
It's feeling pretty good.
We'll see.
Y'all about to wrap
up the tour, right?
Yeah, man.
Taking off for Thanksgiving
and then close it out
here at home on Saturday.
Nice.
Yeah, well, we got tickets
for Saturday night.
But are y'all, are y'all
coming to Grandma's Thursday?
Get to meet Beau.
Yeah man.
Finally, I can't wait.
Hey, listen, I
wanted to ask you,
Danny's going home
for the holidays,
and it really doesn't make sense
for me to fly him back.
I figured since we're
closing things down right
here on Saturday, maybe
you can come out
and back me up on
keys and vocals.
Hell yeah!
Like old times.
Yeah, man that's
what I'm saying.
Hell yeah,
that'd be great.
All right, all right.
Well, I'll send you the
new stuff and we'll do
a practice on Friday,
if that works for you.
Yeah, no, that sounds awesome.
Um, do y'all have an
opener for this tour?
Like if y'all need it I could,
I would be happy to do
just a small acoustic set.
Keep it really chill.
Oh, man, the bill's
pretty stacked.
But you know what?
Maybe I can do
you one better.
Maybe you can do one
of your songs during
my set with the full band.
The house will be full.
Dude!
Yes, absolutely.
That'd be awesome.
All right, well, my manager
Alan's gonna be there
and it might be good
for him to hear you.
Yes.
Thank you.
Thank you, man.
That'd be great.
Well, pick something
and we'll rehearse it
Friday with the guys.
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
I'll send something
over as soon as I can.
All right, we'll see
you at grandma's.
All right see you on Thursday.
Bye.
What?
Yes!
Yeah, his manager is going
to be there, Alan Thomas,
the guy I told you about.
Oh, that's awesome babe.
Yeah, he reps
Fortune Teller,
Thousand Dollar Movie,
a bunch of legit guys.
Okay, so what song
are you gonna play?
Probably an older one.
It's just the one rehearsal
and it's on Friday
and I'll need to cancel
at the mall anyway.
I'm sure you're
bummed about that.
Yeah.
Darren will pay you right?
Yeah, yeah, he'll pay me
but like the exposure is
going to be killer, I'll be
able to sell some merch,
kind of something
I would do for free.
And you're killing
it on Etsy anyway.
I mean, listen,
I'm excited,
a crowd like that,
it seems awesome.
I mean money or no,
but I'm not exactly
killing anything yet.
Hey everybody, it's
Darren Knight here.
So excited to close out
the tour here at home on
Saturday at the Sparklight.
We got a few tickets left
and you're gonna want to
grab those real quick
because our very own Gabe
Lovell is going to be
a special guest.
I know you guys
have missed him,
we've definitely missed him.
Come on out to Saturday.
Link is in the bio.
We'll see you there, peace.
[Clicking sounds]
[Music playing on screen:]
My cocoon is getting tight
White moon calling me out
Trees bow towards my shadow
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Everybody give it up
for Gabe Lovell.
Tell him how much you love him.
Tonight's his final
show with us.
I know he's got an
incredible journey ahead.
Give it up ladies
and gentlemen.
Souls colliding like mistaken
hands gracing the other
Hey Gabe, man,
I'm so proud of you for stepping
out and pursuing the dream.
You're gonna be bigger
than me someday.
I love you man.
Dream big
[Music continues]
[Music stops]
[A family speaking indistinctly]
Hey, great to see you
How are you doing?
Hey buddy...
[overlapping conversations]
Oh, there they are!
[Gabriel and woman singing]
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
[Speaking indistinctly]
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly, sweetly
through the night
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their brief delight
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains
prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your
heav'nly song?
Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo
[background conversations]
They gotta change it up.
They're just running the same
place over and over again.
Thought about my offer?
I could use the help
starting January,
put you on salary
as soon as you want.
I appreciate it man.
It's just, it's so nice
at the pub you know...
just take off for gigs
and recording.
That's not a problem,
I mean we can work
something out.
We're not trying to
kill your dreams.
[Singing] In excelsis Deo
[Clapping]
Mike asked me again
about working for him...
laying tile...
start after the new year...
full time.
It'd be pretty steady.
Might be a blessing,
not a compromise.
[Baby coos]
[Singing]
I pray you wake up in
the morning with a smile
May your dreams be
what the angels see
Dream my baby,
dream my baby, dream
I'll leave the candle burning
Till there's nothing more,
Never walk away,
Never close the door
Dream my baby,
Dream my baby, dream
[Jamie and Gabriel singing]
I pray you wake up
in the morning with a smile
May your dreams be
all that you can see
Dream my baby,
dream my baby, dream
oo oo oo oo oo oo
oo oo oo oo oo
Night Beau.
Goodnight Beau.
Hey, hey, hey,
look who I found
[Excited chattering]
How's it going?
Great, how's the baby?
Terrible [All laugh]
No, it's great.
Dude, how's your kid?
Growing [Laughter,
overlapping conversations]
Boy, are you behaving?
I'm trying.
You know we're closing
the tour down
here at home and I thought
it'd be kind of sweet
if Gabe filled in on keys
for old times' sake.
You know, I think
we're gonna let him do
one of his own songs too.
Think it'd be real special
for the hometown crowd and
yeah, yeah special for us.
So, I'll connect back with
you guys in like 20 minutes?
Yeah, okay cool.
[Band practices music]
I was thinking we could,
because on the record
there's not any base until
the very end, so
for the live thing,
I think it'd be cool...
before I...
and then you go like
[Plays guitar]
Like high like that and then...
yes, yeah...
You'll come in with the
groove right away...
Just start building
back in ...
and then you're off
to the races.
For the intro since we don't
have the strings and stuff...
Right.
...what if I just did
like a kind of open drone thing.
That's awesome.
Yeah just start off
with that with me...
Yeah
Yeah, vibe for days
[Band playing instruments]
Yeah...
Y'all up for trying it
real fast?
Living in the borderland
You gotta fight like a boy
Gotta run like a man
Living in the borderland
Gotta take what you get
just to get what you can
Are we all dangerous
Are we all dangerous
Lost boys shoring up pockets
full of fairy dust
Suffering the wanderlust
They all get crushed
without love
By the law, the
law of the jungle
Help me Holy Jesus
Won't you show me how to live
I've got monsters
at my table I've got
Bibles bent like shivs
Help me Holy Lord I see the
light of heaven's porch
But so many of us are
born here outside
No, I know you don't know
who he is right now but in
six months you are going
to know who he is,
that's why we have
to book it now.
What's up Alan?
That's okay.
But I'm going in now.
I have to go.
[crowd cheering
as the song ends]
Ladies and gentlemen have
I got a treat for you.
Would you give it up
for my good friend
and cousin Gabe Lovell!
Give it up!
It's all you baby.
Thanks Darren for having me
close out the tour with y'all
and thanks everybody for coming.
[Gabriel playing the guitar]
Wild horse running north
Seeing faces of the old
Waterside, moon light
Broken hands and heart of gold
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh
Miles to go, miles to go
Before I sleep
Before I lay my head,
before I lay my head
And fall in the deep,
Color now, wonder how
Dusk and dawn,
could be so far
Naked trees,
winter freeze Truth is
here to light up the dark
oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
I will carry on
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
I will carry on
oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh
My love
Miles to go, miles to go,
before I sleep
Before I lay my head,
before I lay my head
And fall in the deep
Raise your head and
I'll look to the west
I will carry on, I will
carry on Raise your head
and I'll look to the west
I will carry on,
we will carry on
Oh mine, you're mine.
you're mine, oh mine
You're mine, you're mine
[Crowd cheering]
Thank you, thanks Darren
for having me.
Happy holidays everybody.
[Crowd clapping and cheering]
Look, I love Alan,
but he's all business.
At the end of the day,
he's just taking advantage of
my 20-year grind anyway.
Right.
And I'm just being honest.
I'm just being upfront with you.
And these days, you
gotta get the algorithm
working for you or
you're invisible.
Yeah, I hate the algorithm.
And two decades
in and I'm still,
I'm just now able to start
saving for my kids' college,
and you know what?
I gotta stay on the
road to do that.
I don't have the option
to get off the road.
But like, think about
what you did in there,
like you walked
out on that stage,
and you made a real connection
with real human beings.
It doesn't get better than that.
Seriously, that's
what it's all about.
There he is.
Hey buddy, how are you?
Good to see you.
Dude, fantastic.
Thank you.
That was so great.
Thank you, thank you
so much for coming.
Of course, I'm not
going to miss this,
the last day of the tour.
Absolutely.
One of the best
ones for sure.
Thank you so much It's an
awesome way to end it.
Wow.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
Of course.
Hey, this is
my cousin Gabe.
Yes, Alan Thomas
Nice to meet you brother
Nice to meet you.
You were awesome.
Wow.
Thank you Really,
really good.
I appreciate it brother.
Yeah, I loved it.
I'm a little drunk.
But that's...
[Gabe and Darren laugh]
But it was good.... Yeah,
it was great.
Alan owns a piece of a
couple of the best studios
in Nashville and I bet
he'd hook you up.
Yeah, sure.
Of course.
You sure?
[Laughing] Yes,
you're excellent.
If you're in Nashville
and need space or time
or anything like that,
I'll hook you up.
Thanks, man.
I have to head before you give
any more of my things away,
but I love you.
Yep.
Great job.
Great job.
Get some rest
for the holidays.
And the Hulu thing
for Bright Abyss,
they want to do that
for the TV Intro.
All right.
So we'll
figure that out.
And really nice
to meet you dude.
Thank you brother.
Yeah.
And yeah, for real,
just give me a shout.
I'll help you out if
you're ever in town.
I will.
Later fellas.
You need to do that.
You think he might sign me?
Man, he probably
won't even be there.
But what you did
out there tonight,
on that stage,
that's the dream man.
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year
Good tidings we bring to
you and your kin
[Announcement over
speakers in background]
Good tidings at Christmas...
Should auld acquaintance
be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance
be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne;
My Angel Gabriel
Hey Dennis, sorry
I don't have any cash today.
Well no fame, no fortune,
no future, no freedom...
Dennis, you all right?
You want a burger
from the kitchen?
No future, no freedom...
Bless you Gabriel, you angel.
We twa hae run about
the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd
mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne;
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness
yet For auld lang syne.
What'll you have sir?
All right what is a, what's
like a good Scotch?
Like a top shelf?
Ooh we have a lot of the
Speyside single malts,
MacAllan 15 year,
the Glenlivet 12 year,
the Tacallister 10 year....
good stuff
Let's do the first one.
Perfect, good choice.
Add a little splash of Coke
in there if you don't mind.
Coke?
Yeah, just like
[makes sign of a pinch]
... take the edge off.
You don't want Coke in that.
What if we did like a
well Scotch instead?
Let's just get you
something cheap
You serious?
You don't want to
put Coke in this.
Don't be that bartender.
I know what I'm talking about.
Hey, the best Scotch makes
the best mixed drinks.
Right Gabe?
Just give him what he wants
Hey I don't appreciate that.
[Auld Lang Syne
continues in background]
[Train rumbles]
Hey guys
this is Gabe,
Um, hoping you're having
a great Christmas...
Hey guys this is Gabe. Hope
you're having a great holiday...
Hey everyone,
this is Gabe,
just working on
this new song,
Thought I would play
it for you...
[playing the guitar
and singing]
A holy grail, a fairy tale
White whale on
the end of the...
Hey guys this Gabe,
gonna play this song,
everyone
[playing the guitar
and singing]
Holy grail, fairy tale
White whale on
the end of the line
This is stupid...
I got off the phone with
Alan's guy, studio dude.
Said everything is booked
up unfortunately
except for a few days
before Christmas.
But everything
will be at cost,
it'll be a killer deal.
Would you take
anyone with you or...?
No, I wouldn't need to.
He's got a bunch of
Nashville dudes there,
killer guys, played
on a bunch of records.
That's cool.
That's what I'm saying.
Still a lot of money...
Yeah...
Love you...
Go home buddy.
Yeah?
[baby sounds]
Okay.
I gotta, I gotta try,
you know,
cause if I'm playing
at the mall
this time next year?
I don't know.
But I got to try.
I have to...
...or just shut up
and lay tile I guess.
I mean, I don't,
just because you lay
tile doesn't mean you
have to shut up.
What...
...who... I mean...
What is it with men?
It's like all or nothing.
It's so...
I don't know,
"gotta leave my mark on
this world
or I'm worthless."
That's you by the way.
Yeah, I got that.
We don't really
get that option.
You know, it's
called multitasking.
What do you
think Beau Bear?
Should daddy go to Nashville
and sing some awesome songs?
I think you should do it,
I want you to go.
I am your first fan here,
we started the fan club
you should know.
And I plan to be your
last fan and I do want
the world to love what
you do the way that I do.
But you have to know that
it's worth something...
even if you don't get
rich and famous doing it.
Also, do you think your
piece of shit Jeep is
gonna make it
to Nashville?
I was gonna
borrow the Prius.
Yeah, yeah, I knew it...
[background music]
I think the last time
I was in Nashville,
I forgot what tour it
was but we were having
a killer show,
did the whole set,
everybody did great,
and then during
the encore Darren slipped
and fell into the drum kit.
It was like watching
your grandma fall.
He's so tall and he hit
every drum on the way down.
Especially because I was
behind the keyboard
and I was trapped.
I just watched him
go, like a tree.
He played it off
super well
and just laughed about it.
That was a real
human moment
[background music]
Let's try this time,
instead of the four on
the floor we do that more
of a groove at the end of
that last solo
section, whatever,
and then play it
out after that...
That good for y'all?
Yes.
Let's try it...
One, two, three four five.
[playing the guitar]
A holy grail,
a fairy tale,
A white whale on
the end of the line
Days are spent,
making rent
Trading blows
against the grind
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just
getting old,
This hope is just
too heavy to hold
A second glance,
a new romance,
Same old song and dance
The days are done,
for the setting sun,
Just give me one
fighting chance
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
What's up dude?
What's going on?
[Singing]
If I'm crazy,
would you even let me know
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger?
Who's that?
That's Gabe Lovell.
Oh right, right, right...
[Gabriel singing]
Hope is just too heavy
How did I let
so much time go past
I had a vision
and I held fast
Tell me the story
how the stars were made
When the dreamer's song
was played
[Instruments playing]
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know,
Would you tell me
how much longer?
I'm not getting stronger
Maybe I'm just getting old
Hope is just heavy to hold
Hey did you write that?
Uh, yeah I did.
Ain't you a little
young to write
something like that?
I've been around.
Is there food here?
Yeah.
Let's take a break,
grab something to eat.
Okay.
So, what's the dream Gabe?
Oh, you know,
write some music,
record, play a little bit.
Cover of Rolling Stone?
Yeah, if I'm lucky.
Yeah, that is
the word for it.
Talent and hustle, I mean
they get you started
but luck really takes
you there and that's
if you're lucky.
You know, most people
don't have the heart
to know it or handle
it when they're not.
Yeah, I just want
to play music.
Then just play it...
for people who want
to listen to it.
You know,
take these songs,
get them out there.
Don't take out a loan
to make a record
that's going to take
10 years to pay off....
Because this isn't
the story
where the manager
discovers you
and you make it big.
I rep over 20 artists,
five of them you've
heard of, three of
them make a living,
one of them makes
a good living...
and then the rest
are gifted, talented,
sometimes more talented.
Some of them are still
trying to make it,
others have already quit,
some people write and
record and play in
between their day jobs.
So, if you just want
to play then just play.
Ain't you ever
had a dream?
Yeah, I did, and it
wasn't managing
rock stars.
But not everybody
can be lucky.
Come on, I want to,
I want to take
you somewhere.
Yeah?
Okay.
[Auld lang syne playing]
I can already hear
him in there!
Hey, buddy,
what's going on?
Been a minute, man.
Good to see you.
You look good.
This is my buddy Gabe
from out of town.
Hey bud.
There he is.
Oh hey.
Hey...
Alan!
How are you?
Good to see you.
Good to see you.
This is my buddy Gabe.
He's coming in from
out of town.
Gabe?
Gabe.
Gabe, nice to meet you.
What are you drinking?
I'll do a Bulleit
on the rocks.
Me too, same.
[Crowd cheering and clapping]
That's Brody Duveau.
A buddy of mine
manages him.
He's been doing
this forever,
but he's only got
like 50,000
Spotify listens
a month or something.
Bulleit on the rocks...
[Brody sings]
Saturday in the rain
Sipping on lemonade
Speeding down
the country lane
Every Saturday morning,
Brody wakes up to a drunk
voicemail from
his dad just
ripping into him.
"You're never
gonna make it,
join corporate America",
all that stuff.
But every Saturday
night he shows up, ya know?
Brings the house down,
doesn't matter
if it's a packed club
or an empty bar
or whatever.
It doesn't matter.
He's here doing that.
[Brody continues singing]
Cause it don't mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta do something
To keep you around,
to keep you around
Cigarettes, coffee beans
Reading your magazines
He hasn't made it yet?
He's trying.
He's got a couple of
good opening slots.
He's licensed some TV
music for some tween crap
or something.
But you know,
you walk down
Broadway, there's
a million of them
and they're all just
as talented.
It's an embarrassment
of riches
without the riches part.
It doesn't matter because
Brody's not doing it
for the money.
He's doing it
for his dad,
prove that asshole wrong.
'Cause it don't mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta do something
To keep you around,
to keep you around
It's the American Dream
The American Dream
Can I put a little
Coke in this?
Thank you.
Just takes the edge off.
Yeah, I hear
the best whiskey
makes the best cocktail.
Hey, Warren, Warren...
Alan, how ya doing?
Good to see you.
Come to check out Brody?
Yeah, totally.
I wanted to show
my buddy Gabe
some of Nashville's finest.
Gabe Lovell.
Warren Oats.
Yes, yes like the actor.
It was my stage name
in the 90s and it stuck.
Yeah.
He owns the joint.
Okay. Good deal.
Do you perform?
Yeah, a little bit
and I also write.
Yeah, we're recording
right now but you should
book him here,
he'd totally kill.
I'll send you over
some of the stuff
we're working on.
I'd love to hear it.
You guys sticking around?
Yeah, all night buddy
I'll see you later.
Cheers.
He's a nice dude.
'Cause it don't
mean nothing
Without you around,
without you around
So I gotta, I gotta,
I gotta do something
to keep you around,
to keep you around
It's the American Dream
The American Dream
I'd do anything for
the American Dream
The American Dream
I'd do anything for
this American Dream
[Singing ends]
Thank you so much,
thank you, thank you,
merry Christmas.
- - Alan: I love you!
[Brody resumes singing
in background]
I had three albums each
with a top 10 single
and I was broke.
Label screwed me,
killed the dream for me,
so I quit.
But in six months
you are gonna know who he is...
Like, just quit quit?
I had a two-year-old
at home.
I figured, I don't know,
I'd take over my dad's
dry-cleaning business
or run my aunt's
restaurant or something.
Then I realized that
everything that I'd
learned in the music
business the hard way
I can just bank
that as tuition.
I had all this new
knowledge that that
led me to a future that
I wouldn't have
envisioned myself.
Like, I had a dream,
and it was one way
and when it got destroyed,
I realized that
it didn't have
to be binary.
Sometimes a broken dream
can become a new dream.
After all that what
did you end up doing?
Went back into the
music business,
but not as an artist.
I became a
concert promoter,
learned where the real
money was being made
and then made a path for
younger artists to move
and not fall into
the same ditches
that I fell in.
I retired last year,
bought this place.
Got three more.
This is actually
the smallest.
Damn.
Tom Cochrane had it wrong.
Life ain't a highway.
It's an open meadow.
Run free.
[Crowd clapping
and cheering]
Thank you so much!
Merry Christmas,
we love ya!
[Car door shuts]
Alright, Kevin sent you
the rough mixes?
Yeah, yeah,
they're on my phone.
Okay, great.
You need any help mixing
that, just let me know.
Man, thank you.
You've done too
much for me.
Oh dude,
it's my pleasure.
Don't worry about it.
But remember, don't go
broke making a record.
Okay?
I'll hook you up,
it's not a race.
Those guys,
chasing a finish line,
they spend their
whole lives running.
Yeah?
You sound like my wife.
[Laughs]
Brother, you got a wife
that says that to you?
You've already won.
I'm out of here.
All right bud.
I'll let you know
if anything comes up
in the area, opening slots,
anything like that, cool?
Man, thank you.
Yeah.
Drive safe.
Yes sir.
Snowing in Nashville...
See you bud.
Later.
[Car door shuts]
[Windshield wipers working]
[background music playing]
[cars passing on the highway]
Hey.
Hey.
You still up?
Yeah, just finishing
some last-minute
Christmas orders.
Come here.
You're a machine.
How was it?
It was actually
really good.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Did Alan make all
your dreams come true?
No, you and Beau did that.
Speaking of which, I was
thinking on the way home,
remember, how we talked
about getting a house?
Let's get one of
them houses.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, let's get you out
of this living room
and get you a proper
work spot.
Yeah?
Yeah.
A house...
house people...
Not a big house.
We're house people.
Don't get cocky.
We're house people.
Yeah let's get a house.
You like that?
Yeah, I like that.
I really like that.
[Gabriel singing in
the background]
What is it about
the end of the year?
You start thinking
about all these plans
that you've had, and
these hopes and dreams.
Maybe the holidays are
about not looking
in the past
or in the future
but like right here,
right in front of you.
Like you Beau.
This year I got you.
[Singing in the
background continues]
And if, if you were
ever to ask me, "Dad,
what was your dream?"
I'm gonna say I'm
looking right at him,
I'm looking right at him.
[Singing stops]
Still working on it
Beau, take it easy.
Hey Dennis...
Dennis...
Dennis!
Hey.
It's Christmas Eve man,
you got somewhere to stay?
Yes sir, I'll be fine.
Can you spare a dollar?
Sure, bud.
This all gonna go to booze?
It's all I got,
Gabriel,
it's all I got.
Hey come with me,
come on.
It'll be fine, come on.
[Christmas music plays
in the background]
Here you go,
a seat for Dennis.
You good?
Give my buddy Dennis
here a pint on me.
Here you go sir.
Hey...
Welcome sir.
Happy Christmas to you.
Happy Christmas.
[Christmas jazz music plays
in the background]
Hey, hey!
Hey what are
you doing here?
I came to see my cousin.
Man thanks.
Yeah man.
Olivia, this is
my cousin Darren
I was telling you about.
Good to meet you.
I'm a big fan.
Awe, thank you.
That's so sweet.
That's Darren Knight.
...say the best
whiskey makes
the best cocktails.
[laughter]
Yeah, his studio
guys killed it.
Yeah, he called me, he
said you did really well.
No, I felt really
good about the songs.
Just gonna get them mixed
and put them out
and maybe get lucky.
Here's to luck.
Here's to luck.
I can't think of a
better way to bring
in the holiday than with
some live music from
Mr. Darren
Knight himself.
Duke, leave him alone.
Come on up here man.
Hey, I'll play one
if Gabe will
play it with me.
[All cheering and clapping]
Yeah.
Get it, Gabe.
Come on.
All right, let's go.
Guys, Darren Knight is
about to perform
a live set at
Connolly's right now.
Okay.
Testing one, two.
[Sounds of the P.A.
breaking]
Testing one.
[Sounds of the P.A.
breaking]
Duke, fix the P.A.
It's not me, bro.
[Crowd booing]
All right you want to
hear a song?
[audience screams]
Come on Darren,
what you wanna do?
It's your house man,
your show.
Let's, let's do Man on
the Millionth Mile,
bar style.
All right.
I'll follow you.
[Gabriel and Darren
start playing guitar]
You got it, let's go!
Baby don't break the rules
Or you break my heart
You play the fool
But that's not your part
Cause you ain't no
gambling girl
You ain't no
cheating child
You are the lady
who still loves me
I am the man on
the millionth mile
I walked across the desert
Scaled the mountain top
Tracked you to the city
Wondering if your feet
would ever stop
Cause you ain't
no cheating child
You are the lady
who still loves me
I am the man on
the millionth mile
Hold it down for me.
[Gabriel plays harmonica]
[crowd cheering]
That's Gabe Lovell
ladies and gentlemen!
[all singing]
Long lay the world
in sin and error pining
Till He appeared, and
the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope
The weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new
and glorious morn
[all singing]
Fall on your knees,
oh hear the angels voices
Oh, night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Oh, night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Fall on your knees
oh hear the angels voices
Oh night divine, oh night
when Christ was born
Oh night...
Go!
...divine
[crowd cheering]
oh night, oh night divine
[crowd cheering]
It's 12:03.
Merry Christmas to you all.
[crowd shouts
"Merry Christmas"]
Merry Christmas bro.
Merry Christmas bud.
Love you bro.
Love you too.
[singing]
Oh come let us adore him,
[Crowd joins]
Oh come let us adore him
Oh come let us adore him
Christ the Lord.
Merry Christmas everybody.
[crowd replies
"Merry Christmas"]
[background music plays]
[baby coos]
Merry Christmas babe.
Merry Christmas.
How was it at the pub?
Like a dream.
[background music plays]
Hey everyone,
it's Gabe,
hope you had
a good New Year's.
I know I did.
Listen I want to tell you
guys about a new single
I got coming out.
We just got the
masters back...
they're sounding so good.
Special thanks to everyone
at Brick House Studios,
and my boy Alan.
Yeah, just wanted to show
you all the new single,
Heavy Hope.
Hope you enjoy it thanks.
One, two, three, four.
[music begins]
[singing] A holy grail,
a fairy tale,
A white whale on
the end of the line
Days are spent,
making rent
Trading blows
against the grind
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just
getting old
Hope is just
too heavy to hold
A second glance,
A new romance
Same old song and dance
The days are done,
for the setting sun
Just give me one
fighting chance
When do you gotta
let the dream go?
If I'm crazy would
you even let me know?
Would you tell me
how much longer?
I'm not getting
any stronger
Maybe I'm just getting old
Hope is just too heavy
How did I let
so much time go past
I had a vision
and I held fast
Tell me the story
How the stars were made
When the dreamer's
song was played
[Instruments playing]
Sometimes you gotta
let your dreams go
Even though the night
roads look narrow
But when the morning
sun is bright,
I can see it in the light
These roads look more
like open meadows
I hear the dreamer's song
I've heard it all along
I can carry on
With this heavy hope
[baby coos]
[Crowd cheering]
[music playing]
