Mommy Meanest (2024) Movie Script

[]
[Maddy] Where are you going?
[Erik] You'll never let me live
down the restraining order!
[Maddy] Why are you bringing up
the restraining order, always?
Because it's not
about us anymore, Maddy!
The divorce is final!
It's time for you to figure out
what living life on your own
looks like.
Well, I never
wanted the divorce.
I didn't want it for you
or for me, or for Mia.
See, there it is... right there!
It is always about
what you want!
Mommy!
Leave Mommy alone!
Oh!
It's okay, sweetie. It's okay.
Mommy's okay.
[Erik]
We'll finish this another time.
Mommy can always count on you,
can't she?
Like we always say
"Together forever,
no matter whatever!"
Oh, my sweet girl.
[]
[loud knocking on door]
[pounding]
[phone buzzing,
text alerts chiming]
Mia, it's your mom!
Let me help you!
[water running]
[thumping persistently]
Mia, I know you're in there.
I hear your phone blowing up.
[thumping]
Mia!
Oh...
[text alert chiming]
[multiple text alerts chiming]
[water running]
No...
No. Oh, no, oh, no.
No. No, no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.
- Mia!
- [pounding]
[water running]
[breath shaking]
[]
My mother's always been someone
who doesn't back down
from a challenge.
That's why, in my freshman year,
when I thought all hope was lost
and my life didn't matter,
my mom taught me
to reinvent myself.
She said
to do what's necessary,
to take action.
There's a reason
I avoided the cafeteria
and other crowded places
at school...
It's because
I wanted to be invisible.
Back then,
some of you made fun of me
because my family didn't live
on the same side of town.
Didn't have
the same kind of money.
I was only in school here
because my mom was hired
as the music teacher,
but I managed
to make an actual friend...
Someone who also wanted
to be invisible,
but still, I was harassed
bullied.
One day,
some freshmen cornered me,
throwing pennies
while mocking me
for not coming
from a wealthy family.
It was my mom who suggested
I take those pennies
and start my own charity.
And, three and a half
years later,
me and my bestie
have raised over $20,000
for Portland's
most active animal rescues.
- Whoo-hoo!
- [crowd applauding]
A lot of you contributed...
Even some of you
who threw those pennies.
It's like my mom always says,
"What goes wrong
can be made right."
So, as some of you
made fun of me freshman year,
I don't want you feeling guilty.
I want you feeling empowered,
because, weirdly,
you've contributed
to something really good,
and even helped me realize
I want to open
my own animal hospital one day.
That was then,
and this is now,
and as most of us get ready
to close out senior year
in a couple months,
it's a good time to remember
we're all in this together.
Each one of us matters,
and bullying has no place
in anyone's lives.
- [applauding]
- [cheering]
Well done, Mia.
I knew you were
the perfect student
to talk to this class
about bullying.
Does this mean
I can count on you
for my recommendation letter
to UNEF?
Well, with your high marks,
I don't think
you're gonna need it,
but absolutely.
[Mia] Thank you.
Mia's a real chip
off the old block.
Oh, wasn't she so great?
Look, I know you guys
have plans tonight,
but there's something you and I
should probably talk about,
if you have some time
before school lets out.
Is everything okay?
Yeah...
Yeah, I just...
[Maddy]
Hey, can we pick this up later?
[background chatter, indistinct]
[Mia giggles]
Oh, my god!
I was so nervous.
Thank God
you were in the audience.
That's exactly how I felt
when you transferred here
in the ninth grade.
There's no way
I would've made it
through these past three years
without you as my co-pilot.
Oh, same!
Think the Jet-Set
remembers it was them
making it rain pennies
freshman year?
I hope so.
Not that I wanna
throw shade at them...
Okay, well,
maybe just a little shade.
Listen, if I don't get
something off my chest,
- I'm gonna...
- Hey.
I heard you talking
to Principal Allen
about going to University
of Northeast Florida.
[Mia] Their pre-veterinarian
medicine program is the best...
Assuming I get my scholarship.
Yeah. I'm going there, too.
No way!
Yeah, it's been the plan
since sophomore year.
How cool is it... we'll both know
somebody so far away from home.
That's amazing.
[]
Erik! Wait!
Told you I wasn't gonna miss
our daughter's speech.
Well, I'm glad
you got off of work.
Aren't you gonna go
congratulate Mia?
I'm sure she's busy
with kids her own age.
I'll just catch up with her
at our monthly breakfast.
Erik.
It's important to me for you
to have a relationship with Mia.
You got a funny way
of showing it over the years.
Oh, don't tell me
you're gonna bring up
the restraining order?
Like you'd ever
let me forget it?
Look, that's water
under the bridge,
but what's not
is Mia leaving for college,
starting her own life.
All things that I want for her.
Only you've never handled
separation all that well.
Oh, look who's talking...
The guy I divorced
over a decade ago?
Same old Maddy.
[chuckles]
You're right... I'm wrong.
The whole empty-nest thing's
closer than you think.
Pretty soon,
it's gonna be just you.
You prepared for that?
- [door thuds]
- [engine starts]
Is everything all right?
Nothing to worry about.
I invited Erik.
You can call him "Dad,"
you know.
After everything
he put you through?
He's lucky
"Erik" is all I call him.
You never cease to amaze me.
I got it from my mother.
[both] "Together forever,
no matter whatever!"
- [both laughing]
- I'm so proud of you!
Oh, my god.
You did such a great job.
Oh, thanks, Mom.
[choir voices rising]
...Everybody loves my baby
But my baby don't love
nobody but me
Nobody but me
That's why
I'm telling you
Everybody wants my baby
But my baby
Don't want nobody
But me
That's plain to see
Bop...
Ah!
Trs excellent,
ladies and gentlemen...
Or however you identify
your talented selves.
Brad, watch your tone.
Someone's feeling herself
after her daughter was all,
"My mom's the best mom ever"
speech.
[snickering]
Do you have something
you'd like to share, Emma?
I do, Ms. K.
Okay?
Uh, do you have Zinger?
Not that I'm aware of.
Do I need to see a doctor?
[giggling]
Okay. Scan the comments.
Our Honors Chorus
is getting shredded online.
Something Zoey knows all about.
Oh, yes, you do know about
cyberbullying, don't you?
That was, like, forever ago.
I'm not sure a year
is "forever ago."
I'm fine, really.
The case
is almost completely wrapped up.
Oh, that's good.
The whole thing brought me
and my parents way closer.
The same way
you and Mia are in sync.
Circling back...
Kids from other choruses
keep posting
that the public-domain crap
we perform
is "way below basic,"
and shows
that we "have zero talent".
So, you're saying
that you want to "wow" audiences
with something unexpected?
But I thought you said
the school won't pay
for the rights
to any decent songs?
I'll tell you what.
You find a song that you love,
and I'll see how much room
I have on my credit card
for recital fees.
On the serious, Ms. K?
Yes! I like to shut down
a cyberbully,
just like anyone.
All right! From the top,
ladies and gentlemen.
[school bell ringing]
[indistinct din and bustle]
Oh!
- [chuckling] Ah.
- Hey.
Not exactly what I had in mind
when I was hoping
to run into you.
I was supposed
to come by your classroom.
Oh! After Mia's speech,
and Erik's weirdness,
and all the students
needing me, ah...
You forgot?
I'm awful, right?
No. No, you're not awful.
It's just...
I don't think we should
keep seeing each other...
Outside of the school,
as a couple.
You look surprised.
I thought, after six weeks,
you might want to take it
to the next level.
The next... what?
See you tomorrow, Ms. K.
Thanks for today.
Hi, girls.
Listen, you're, like,
the cool, hip teacher and I'm...
Somebody I was enjoying
getting to know.
I appreciate that,
and it's been really fun for me,
too, it has, but...
I don't think
we're good together...
Romantically.
Plus, you've got
a lot going on right now,
with Mia going
off to school out east.
Well, she could go
to a community college here.
I mean, what does that
have to do with us?
Honestly, I don't know
if there ever was an "us."
You spend more time
with your students
than the teachers
who work here, and...
If it isn't my favorite couple!
Who died?
What did I interrupt?
He just broke up with me.
For real?
- Yeah.
- You know what they say...
If not him, someone better.
Who, your Dad?
Ew! Definitely not Erik.
Key word? "Better."
[bell ringing]
Oh, I almost forgot.
Eliot left this for you
in my classroom.
Said that you didn't
have much time for him
after your speech.
Eliot totally disappeared
in the middle of a conversation.
Doesn't a black flower
mean death?
Yeah, but isn't black
Eliot's thing?
He's still stuck
on freshman year.
You know, probably didn't like
Josh Landon
congratulating me on my speech.
Don't you find
the popular kids vapid?
I don't.
Didn't
ish.
But what Josh
and a few of his friends
had to say after my speech
was kinda unexpected,
and a lot of them are headed
to the East Coast for college.
They've got
this whole network setup
that's all about
prepping for life beyond Oregon.
Okay!
What about
Eliot's hurt feelings?
Eliot knows
he could count on me,
after everything
we've been through.
Moving away for school
won't ever change that.
You don't have
a scholarship yet.
Principal Allen said
he'd write
the recommendation letter.
Amazing!
You know what?
Let's celebrate
all-things-you, tonight.
Let's go
to our favorite sushi place.
[Josh] Ready, Mia?
Come on, girl, let's go!
Get in.
Would you cancel me
if I rain-checked
on mother-daughter date night?
It's fine.
Go have fun.
We can have sushi any night.
Best Mom ever!
Besides, this is good practice
for you being solo,
for when I'm living 3,000 miles
away later this year.
[sighs] Have fun.
Thanks, Mom.
Thanks.
Yeah, no worries.
Oh, hey.
[]
Madelyn.
You got a sec?
Listen.
I know your annual review isn't
until the end of the semester,
but I thought you'd like
to know a few areas
that could use improvement.
Right now?
I deeply appreciate
how involved you are
with our pupils,
especially given
that your classes range
from Freshman Intro to Music
to Senior Honors Chorus.
I am not following.
Well, appraisals
from your fellow teachers
rate you as, perhaps,
a little too involved
with your students.
What?
Well, between you and me,
I think
they're a little confused
as to why you're not more
aligned with the faculty here.
You know, we're all about
team spirit
here at Maplewood, so
maybe a little less time
with kids your daughter's age,
and a little more
with the adults who teach here?
Make friends my age? Got it.
I'm only letting you know
so that you can make an effort
before your annual review.
After all, you do want
to keep teaching here
after Mia
goes to college, right?
Good.
Yeah.
[]
[door opens]
You waited up?
Not on purpose.
Is it that late?
Oh, wow.
Have you been with Josh
and his friends this whole time?
You sound like Eliot.
He left a nasty voicemail.
I never called about his flower.
He might even be the one
who sent this text.
You think Eliot sent that?
No. He would never.
Eliot wouldn't do that.
But you know,
anyone could fake their number
and send
an anonymous text or DM.
How?
Mom, please.
You would never understand.
Are you okay?
I am better than okay.
[chuckles]
Josh is so... surprising.
He and his friends
were really into what
I had to say at the assembly.
They even shared some stuff
about their own insecurities.
Well, I'm not surprised
that other people
recognize your worth.
You've always been a star
in my eyes.
Mom.
So what is going on with Eliot?
Eliot is still holding a grudge
over freshman year.
Meanwhile, I've moved on.
Plus, Eliot and I are buddies.
Josh could be...
I don't know.
[chuckles]
[text chimes]
Another message?
It's Josh.
Says he wants to see me again,
"one on one."
So, what's next...
"Homecoming Queen"?
Don't tell me
you're jealous, too.
I only want what's best for you.
So
tell me about your night.
Well, I'm still put off
that Scot broke up with me,
and Principal Allen
cornered me and said
he's not a fan
of my teaching style.
He'll be fine.
What are you always telling me?
What if all this change
is the universe's way
of getting you ready
for the perfect guy,
and an even better job?
You think?
[text chimes]
Another message from Josh.
[giggles]
[]
[]
[text alert chimes]
[]
[text alert chimes]
[]
[school bell ringing]
- Hey.
- Hi.
I messaged you last night,
but I didn't hear back.
Oh, um...
I had my phone on silent
after getting that ran do text
at miniature golf.
Well, I hope that's not how
you think of hearing from me.
Give the girl
some breathing room, Josh!
Geez. Did you block that number,
like I told you?
Yeah, and all quiet since,
except for Josh's texts.
And mine?
[Mia] Eliot, hey.
You're being cyberbullied?
So not a thing.
Uh, you know Kira and Josh.
Yeah, we go way back.
Freshman year,
if I'm not mistaken.
I assume you'll text me later,
unless I'm the one you blocked?
Eliot.
Eliot!
[]
[Kira] Last night's
mini golf was epic.
Exactly what I was gonna say.
Yeah, totally.
[]
Hi, Eliot.
How's it going?
You better tell Mia
things aren't
as happily-ever-after
around here as she thinks.
I get it.
You're jealous.
Of the Jet-Set?
Of less time with Mia.
Trust me, I understand,
but you're not handling it
the right way.
I didn't send
those nasty texts to Mia.
I heard her talking about it,
if that's what you mean.
[school bell ringing]
I didn't think you did.
[]
[Erik] You look tired.
[Mia] Gee, thanks, Erik.
It's great to see you, too.
I didn't mean...
I guess you've been busy
studying for midterms?
Trying.
My phone's been blowing up
with weird messages and DMs.
I've been getting them 24/7.
What kind of weird messages?
You know, you could always
turn your phone off
while you're studying.
I know, I know.
No one your age wants to be
disconnected from their phone,
not even for a second.
I kinda met someone.
Someone?
Hmm. A guy?
Or a girl?
I'm good with either.
[text chimes]
Is that the special someone?
Don't worry... I'm blocking
all numbers and profiles
from people
that keep bothering me.
From complete strangers?
Like, you don't get messages
from numbers
you don't recognize?
Bogus numbers
to renew my car insurance, sure.
How many messages
are we talkin' here?
I don't know.
A couple, I guess?
It's not a crime for a father
to want to know
what's going on
in his daughter's life.
Yeah, okay.
I divorced your mom,
not you.
Mom's the one who wants me
to have breakfast with you,
you know.
She still cares about you,
even after the whole
restraining order thing.
You-You mean
from when you were seven?
Let's just say
some stuff in life
it's hard to get over...
"Erik."
I'm always here for you, okay?
[indistinct background chatter]
[choir] Every morning
every evening
Ain't we got fun?
Not much money
Oh, but honey
Ain't we got fun?
Ooo, ooo
The rent's unpaid, dear
And we haven't a car
But anyway, dear
We'll stay as we are
Even if we owe the grocer
Don't we have fun?
Fun
Tax collectors
getting closer
Still we have fun
There's nothing surer
The rich get richer
The poor get poorer
In the meantime
In between time
Ain't we got fun?
Yeah!
[claps] Really nice.
Really nice. Great job.
For bringing down the house
of an assisted-living facility,
maybe.
We're having trouble
picking a song
that'll earn props
at our next show.
Everything we like
costs so much.
There's plenty of good material
that we can afford,
that will highlight
everyone's voices,
and shut everyone on Ringer...
[in unison] "Zinger."
Whatever.
Up.
[school bell ringing]
All right, guys,
check out songs from the '80s.
[indistinct chatter]
- Zoey?
- Yeah?
How long did it take them
to find your cyberbully?
Uh, it's complicated.
They know who's doing it,
but different numbers, phishing,
DMs from multiple apps...
Police say it would be
a lot easier to convict
with a confession.
Worried about
Mia's random texts?
News travels fast when someone's
hanging with Josh Landon.
[Mia] I'm not interrupting,
am I?
Mia!
No, we're just talking.
- Later, Ms. K.
- Bye.
- Hey, Mia.
- Hey.
What's the matter?
Don't tell me your dad
was acting all weird
at the breakfast.
Only the usual weird.
- [chuckling]
- But that's not why I'm upset.
"I remember when you were ugly.
Spoiler alert...
You still are."
Is this about you?
It came to my phone, didn't it?
We have to report this.
Mom, no.
If we turn this into a thing,
we'll make it worse
than it already is.
I'm showing you
because we're us.
Well, what can I do for you?
I had plans to see Josh later,
but I think I'll cancel
and stay home with you.
You want to binge a few episodes
of Gilmore Girls?
Yes! Yes!
I'll pop the popcorn.
[]
So, I wanted to talk to Zoey
about what she went through
with the substitute teacher
last year,
but Principal Allen's been on me
for socializing
with my students.
Zoey went to the authorities.
You should, too...
With Mia's permission.
You wouldn't want her thinking
that you were part of something
behind her back.
Thanks, Scot.
I appreciate you.
No matter our status,
I'm always here for you...
You know that, right?
Mind if we crash your party?
Sure, hi!
- [giggling]
- Hi, Scot.
[Elizabeth] We heard
what happened with Mia.
[Maddy] You did?
Oh, we were trying
to keep it on the down-low
'cause we weren't sure
who to report it to.
It's hard to keep any secrets
at the school,
especially regarding
something so awful.
After everything
that happened with Zoey,
we keep any shade
out in the open,
where sunlight can destroy it.
I don't know that much
about cyberbullying.
I've just been reading up on it.
[sighs]
Bad on us for not reaching out
before something
like this happened.
Tch.
[chuckles awkwardly]
[]
[keys clacking]
Let me guess.
More research?
No, I'm just trying
to figure out
what we're dealing with here.
Hey, how about
some more Gilmore Girls?
I'm actually on my way out.
Don't be mad.
Oh...
Josh wants to see me again.
Oh!
So, are you two dating?
Ew, Mom, no.
We're hanging.
[text chimes]
What is it?
I-It's Josh. I better go.
Bye.
[]
Can I get a double-scoop
of the chocolate-peanut butter?
Do you want one?
I'm good.
No, I-I told you...
It's my treat.
As if I can't afford
my own ice cream cone?
Tell me this isn't about
how much money my family has.
This is a bad combination.
Chocolate and peanut butter?
You and me.
Okay.
Now I'm really confused.
Why was it so important
that we get together again?
Besides that
we're both going to UNEF and...
How fierce your speech was?
You really think so?
Yeah, you're talking about
what happened back in the day
and how you turned it around,
and saved so many animals.
Yeah. I really think so.
[]
[shutter snaps]
[snapping]
[]
[Kira] Got word the cybercrime's
still on fast-forward.
[Mia] I'm doing my best
to ignore the messages and DMs.
I just charged my phone.
Been a minute since
I even checked my messages.
[text alerts chiming]
Oh, my gosh.
None of these are from numbers
you recognize?
You know
this is next level, right?
And it's a lot like
what that cringe
substitute teacher did to Zoey.
What can I do
besides delete-delete-delete?
You have to get
the cops involved.
If my mom knew
how many messages I was getting,
she would lose it.
- To be continued at lunch.
- Okay.
Impressive.
Lunch date with
a member of the Jet-Set?
Don't be stupid.
Yeah, no, stupid would be
constantly blowing me off
to spend time with Josh
when you know I had something
to get off my chest.
Why are you acting so weird?
Me? I'm the one acting weird?
[chuckles]
Yeah, says the girl
who did a complete 180
since her big speech.
[]
- Cheers.
- Cheers.
Thanks for agreeing to drinks
even though we...
I never wanted this
to be over, Scot.
Yeah, I'm not sure
that's what I want either.
Not now that you need
what you and Mia
are going through,
it's a real threat,
and I'm not gonna
abandon you, Madelyn.
I want to be there for you.
Oh, that's so sweet.
Thank you.
That means a lot.
You know, I'm just worried
that Mia is not sharing
the full extent
of her cyberbullying.
I overheard her talking
to her girlfriends,
and I think it is way worse
than she's letting on.
I mean, at least to me.
I thought you two shared
everything with each other?
Well, yeah, we did,
but ever since the assembly,
I haven't seen her so much.
You know,
it's all about "Josh Landon!"
I just don't want her
to get hurt.
You know Josh Landon...
The big man on campus?
Yeah, I know him.
"A" -plus student.
University of Northeast Florida
offered him
an atmospheric science
scholarship.
Wow.
Huh.
Well, I guess I wish
he wasn't just one of the kids
that made her life hell
freshman year.
That was a really dark time,
and I had to work really hard
to pull her out of it,
and I just do not want
to go through that ever again.
Maddy, with you
watching out for her,
I'm sure
she's gonna be just fine.
[]
[Mia, tearfully]
Where were you?
What's wrong?
[]
[reading] "What's it like
knowing your new friends
secretly hate you?"
"You should be in a kennel
like the animals you rescue!"
Is this from the same number?
Different ones,
and ones from social apps.
How many of these are there?
Okay, you know what?
This has...
This has gone on too far.
We have to report this
and figure out who this is.
How do you know it's one person?
It could be a group effort.
Mom, people are awful.
I gotta admit...
This is all starting to make me
question my new squad.
But you said that
they'd changed for the better!
According to
some of these texts,
everyone is gaslighting me.
Okay, well,
why don't we try to look up
some of these numbers online?
I tried calling one...
A dry cleaner who had no idea
his number
was being used like this.
All right, well, maybe
we're jumping to conclusions,
and this is all just random.
Really?
Who would do this
if they actually knew you?
No one, that's for sure.
Aw, sweetie.
Aw, it's okay.
[]
[]
I made smoothies!
What's wrong?
Nothing.
Everything.
I thought the texts
might eventually stop,
but they're happening
more and more,
and they're getting worse.
- Well, what do they say?
- Mom. No.
[sighing]
What if they're right?
Who?
The texts...
What they say about me.
You're smart, you're brave
you're above all this.
Am I really?
I'm starting to have feelings
like I did freshman year
that I thought
I put all behind me.
It makes me
want to hurt myself again.
No. No. No.
I love you.
So many people love you.
Do they?
Yes!
The kids at school...
They were so moved
by your speech.
So were the teachers.
You cannot let one crazy person
define who you are.
Is that who this is?
A crazy person?
Well, wouldn't it have to be?
[Maddy takes a deep breath]
[]
Well, I'm really glad
you brought this
to my attention.
Gives me more to think about
with regard to your review.
I didn't realize
you were dealing with
something so heinous,
and I'd wondered why
you didn't make your usual
high marks on your midterms.
Oh, it's not Mia's fault.
She's been distracted,
but I think she's handling it
really, really well.
Mom!
I will get my grades up
by the end of the semester.
Let's put a pin in that
and your scholarship
recommendation letter for now.
Look, what you're dealing with
is very troubling.
You don't have to do that.
The only reason
we're telling you
is because my mom insisted.
And she was 100% correct
to do so.
You'll be glad to know
I keep a very detailed record
of all cyberbullying
at our school.
You do?
Wow. You do.
I share everything
with the police,
who have the authority to tap
into a national database
and try and catch
whoever's harassing
our, and other, students.
Have they ever caught someone
and prosecuted them?
Mm-mm. Usually not,
unless whoever's sending
the nasty messages trips up,
like in Zoey's case last year.
Well, maybe that's
who's harassing Mia.
Well, what would
his end goal be,
when he's already
facing jail time?
Plus, he never subbed
any of the classes I was in.
Okay, well, I'm not giving up
until we find out
who this culprit is.
Uh, have you been absent
from any classes this week?
[overlapping] Me?
Your mom.
A few members of Honors Chorus
were concerned
when you didn't make rehearsal
period twice in a row.
Oh, heh...
Don't give it another thought.
You know, now that I know
what's going on with Mia,
there is no need
to write you up.
Thanks.
[]
[text alerts chiming]
...Idle hands
and broken dreams
[text alerts chiming]
The devil lies
But darkness hides
[loud knocking on door]
I lost myself...
[door bursts open]
I'm glad you're awake.
Another message?
"You will never be
a true member of the Jet-Set."
Doesn't Eliot call
the popular kids the Jet-Set?
Yeah,
but you don't think
Eliot would...?
No!
You've been friends for years.
He loves you
almost as much as I do.
Can I sleep in here tonight?
Sure you can,
but I don't think
we're gonna do much sleeping.
We have over a hundred episodes
of the Gilmore Girls
to re-watch.
[chuckling softly]
[]
[text alert chiming]
[text alerts chiming]
[text alerts chiming]
[crying]
[calling out]
Mia! We don't want to be late.
Hear me, honey?
[gasps]
[exhales irately]
Please don't turn this
into a drama, Maddy.
I wasn't spying.
What do you call
standing in someone's window,
staring at them,
without them knowing?
Then answer my calls
and I won't have to check in!
I don't owe you anything,
and I'm a little bit busy
right now, okay?
Is this about Mia's cyberbully?
How do you know about that?
She told me.
Not to mention,
the school called
after you met
with the principal.
I have every right to know
what's going on
with my daughter.
Oh, you think that's how
she thinks of herself?
As "your" daughter?
Let's ask Mia.
"Ask Mia" what?
The school called
and told your dad
about the cyberbullying.
And?
Maybe I can help figure out
who it is.
You don't think
I can do that on my own?
Would you two knock it off?
This is about me.
Not you,
or you.
Honestly, I just want to help.
I know that she's your world.
I'm sorry.
No one wants the best for her
more than I do.
[indistinct chatter]
Do you really think
he's cookie-jarring her?
As if those two are
still gonna be a couple by prom?
[mutters under breath]
"Cookie-jarring."
[shouts to class]
All right, let's go!
[]
Hey!
So, are we gonna talk
about this, or what?
I might be willing, if you are.
I'm sorry.
I've been distracted.
It's not all your fault.
I haven't exactly been
upfront with you.
What I was trying to confess
the day of your speech...
I've... [deep breath, sigh]
I've been trying to get out
of the friend zone with you
since winter break.
I wanted us to be...
I don't know, something more.
Eliot...
I had no idea.
Yeah, well, obviously,
I should've tried way sooner,
since now Josh Landon,
and the rest of the Jet-Set,
has all your attention.
But it doesn't mean
I haven't missed you.
Then, would you be willing
to go to Greta's party with me
next Thursday night...
as friends?
Um, isn't Greta
part of the Jet-Set?
Yeah, well, her dad has
this collection of
vintage pinball machines
I'm willing
to sacrifice my ethics for.
- [text alert chimes]
- [gasps]
Whoa, dude.
Overreacting much?
You have no idea the level
of messages I'm getting.
Some are pretty intense.
It's not you
sending anonymous texts, is it?
What?
Maybe just to mess with me?
One of the messages
used the phrase "Jet-Set."
I don't know anyone...
Like, I magically
sent you a text
while I was
standing here with you?
[text alert chimes]
You've got to be kidding me.
What?
[Mia] It's from my mother!
Mia, I can explain...
Like there's any explanation
for this?
Well, that's what I mean!
There is no explanation
for that, obviously.
And what is "cookie-jarring"?
When someone's hanging
with someone
they aren't that into
until the person
they really like
gives them the green light.
Well, I'm certainly
not up on the current lingo.
As indicated
by the word "lingo."
Here's my phone.
You can check my messages.
You have my password.
I didn't send that text.
You think I don't know that?
But why would
whoever's doing this
make it look like you did?
I certainly cannot
get into the mind
of somebody this vile.
Eliot said I'm overreacting.
Eliot...
Who could be the one doing this?
He says it's not him.
I believed you
when you denied it.
I would like to think
that's true for Eliot, too.
Well, jealousy does have a way
of testing somebody's character.
[keys clacking]
Hi, Barb.
It's your lucky day.
I win the lottery?
Principal Allen said
you need
some lunchtime volunteers,
so you could go grab
a snack in the cafeteria.
He did?
He sure did.
Why else would I be here?
Well, I could use a few minutes
to grab a sandwich and a decaf.
Well, knock yourself out.
Thanks!
Sure!
[]
[keys continue clacking]
[snapping]
Everything all right?
Oh, Barb! You're fast.
Forgot to log off my computer.
Oh!
Let's see.
[hits keys]
You're an angel!
[chuckles]
[under her breath]
Oh, my god. Phew.
[teacher, in French]
Alors, on va parler
des vacances d't.
On peut aller en Europe...
Et tu aller
au chateau ce weekend?
[teacher] Josh!
Fais attention!
Oui. Pourquoi pas?
Chouette.
[multiple text alerts chiming]
[teacher] Alors...
Puis-je demander
qu'est-ce qui se passe?
[indistinct murmuring]
Mia, je suis surprise
que tu envoies
quelque chose com me a.
I didn't send this.
Did you?
No.
Josh et Mia,
au bureau du directeur,
maintenant!
[indistinct murmuring]
I got here as fast as I could!
Josh's parents are on the way,
but they've been notified.
About what?
Someone texted a photo
of Josh and me kissing
to the entire AP French class.
What?
We've gone from cyberbullying
to an actual stalker?
Who took a photo of you?
And how would somebody
get all these numbers?
Yeah, nothing's private
in the digital age.
Well, Mia's number is,
or at least it's supposed to be.
Mia's situation seems different
than the case last year.
Zoey's? Which you won't give me
any more details about.
Well, would you want me
divulging personal information
about Mia
without your permission?
You contacted my ex-husband
without telling me.
Well, yes,
but I assumed that you and he...
You assumed wrong!
Can we go?
Not until your parents get here.
Madelyn, look,
I'm on your side, all right?
No one deserves
this kind of abuse,
and if you don't want me
contacting your ex...
[Mia and Maddy]
We don't.
Would it be okay
if I got excused
from the rest
of my classes today?
My mom, too?
Can you cover for her?
Of course, Mia.
Anything to help.
All right, let's go.
[]
Taking the rest of the day off?
Epic!
How about mani-pedis and sushi?
Mom! No.
How could you?
With everything going on?
Well, I'm as upset as you are.
More so.
I'm just trying to find ways
to comfort you.
You're right.
I know you got my back.
Always, sweetheart. Always.
Okay, so...
Promise not to freak.
I think we should go
to the police
and tell them everything.
Oh.
[officer]
Is this all of 'em, or...?
[Mia] Those are from today.
I try and delete them
as fast as they come in.
Understandable,
but we have to keep
all of this for evidence,
as upsetting as they are.
These messages
are not about you.
They're not personal.
Your mom's right.
Cyberbullying says more
about the person, or persons,
sending the texts
than it does their victim.
But the messages are personal.
Look.
I know what it feels like
to be told you don't fit in.
You'd be surprised
how many of the men around here
were put off by my promotion.
Acknowledging what's happening
doesn't mean
the messages define you.
It makes you stronger
than the hate you're receiving.
Can you understand that?
How many messages
are we talking here?
I don't know.
Hundreds?
People use dummy numbers
all the time.
Thanks to phishing,
you can get bullying texts
from your own phone.
Oh, like the text Mia got
from me,
as if I was the one doing this?
I mean, how would
that even possible?
It's all part of the game.
Often, the goal
is to confuse the victim.
Make them
second-guess everything...
Even their tightest
relationships.
No one could ever
make me second-guess my mom.
So, maybe one
of the other numbers
is the actual cyberbully?
Traceable numbers
are usually from burner phones
that can't be linked
to an actual purchaser,
and getting user info
from social media apps
can take months.
There's too many laws
protecting them.
Well, what about laws
protecting my daughter?
Don't forget
to send me screenshots
of every message you get.
Okay.
So, collecting screenshots?
Does that mean that this crime
can be prosecuted?
That's our goal...
To catch this monster
and put them behind bars.
Good.
[]
You didn't have to spring for
the most expensive model, Mom.
It's the least I can do
after everything
you've been through.
Now, the number assigned to this
hasn't been used recently?
Part of the upgrade fee, ma'am.
And the number's unlisted?
Mom.
What? We have to be sure.
It's like you're
overcompensating for something.
What would I
be overcompensating for?
Nothing.
Which is exactly my point.
Exactly.
Thank you so much.
- Have a nice day.
- Thanks.
Oh, and, ma'am?
Let me know if you need
any more of those burner phones.
That was weird.
Mom, what was that guy
talking about?
[]
Hey, Mia!
[Mia] Josh? Hey.
Mia, are you good?
Mom, a little privacy, please?
[]
Is everything all right?
I haven't been
completely upfront
about the texts and DMs.
What do you mean?
When did you get these?
I've been getting them
about as long as you.
And you didn't tell me
until now?
I didn't want to mess this...
Us... up.
What, you think
I don't still feel bad about
what some of my friends
did freshman year?
Except I'm over that.
That's what my speech
was all about...
Taking something bad
and making it good.
Some of us still feel guilty
about the pennies,
even if we weren't
the ones throwing them.
I'm not some fragile flower
that's gonna wilt and die.
That's one of the things
I like most about you, but
[sighs] I don't know.
I saw how this distracted you
from your midterms,
how that could affect
the scholarship
you're applying for.
Look, I didn't want
to make things worse
by telling you about
the texts I've been getting.
I'm not sure I buy that excuse,
especially if my strength
is one of the reasons
you're attracted to me.
[]
[door opens and shuts]
[]
[sighs]
[text alert chimes]
[]
[relieved sigh]
[hangers clattering]
[]
[doorbell rings]
You don't hate people
who show up unannounced, do you?
You brought flowers?
- Pizza!
- The flowers were already here.
They are gorgeous!
And I'm into the pizza, too.
Come in!
The envelope says
they're from Flamingo Orchards.
That place
is pretty bougie!
Someone wants
to make an impression.
[chuckling]
I'll get the door!
Your place is great.
Oh, thanks.
It's just a rental.
Mia hates it
because they don't allow pets.
[laughing]
[Maddy sighs]
Okay, let's see who this is.
Oh, my god...
If Scot's proposing,
I'm gonna be seriously jealous.
Do you know how many teachers
wanted to date him
before you two got together?
It's from my ex.
He's apologizing.
Wow. He hasn't been
this nice to me in years.
I thought you and Scot
were back on?
Oh, that's complicated.
Crisis has a tendency to bring
people together... even exes.
- How many pieces do you want?
- I'll have two.
[Elizabeth] The big one...
The big slice.
[]
[text alert chimes]
Ugh, Eliot.
Aren't I allowed to be
fashionably late?
[]
[]
Mom!
Oh, what's wrong?
You look great!
Where are you going?
I was supposed
to meet up with Eliot.
"You never fit
into this school."
"Everyone's still making fun
of your speech
behind your back."
"You're as second hand
as your clothes."
How are you getting
these messages?
Your number is unlisted!
Does that even matter?
I've obviously been
lying to myself
about how everyone sees me,
when I can't even afford
the same school!
You can't let these messages
define who you are.
You can't.
I just don't get what I did.
Why do people hate me so much?
You cannot let these messages
get the best of you.
I saved you freshman year.
I'll save you again.
Who are those from?
Would you believe your dad?
He feels bad about
what's happening to us.
Us?
"Us"?
I'm the one
getting cyberbullied!
Well, I'm sure
he meant them for you, too.
Do you want to keep them
in your room?
How can you
take this so lightly?
I'm here for you in every way.
We've gone to the police.
I got you a new cell phone.
What else can I do?
Maybe enjoy yourself
a little less.
You think I enjoy
you being tortured?
You seem to be
reaping the benefits...
Your new friends,
you're back together with Scot.
Erik
sending you flowers?
It seems like
me being cyberbullied
is really paying off for you!
Mia!
Listen to yourself.
I would do anything for you!
Anything!
[]
[clacking]
[Mia, calling] Mom?
Hang on!
[Mia]
Where are you?
I'll be right there!
I feel bad about what I said.
[text alerts chiming]
Do you hear that?
Hear what?
- [text alerts chiming]
- Mom, don't be weird!
It's your phone.
Mom.
I-I didn't want you seeing this.
Seeing what?
Mom
you're scaring me.
[sighing]
"You're even more worthless
than your daughter."
You've been
getting cyberbullied, too?
Why didn't you
tell the detective?
Because I want them
focusing on you.
You don't have take this on
by yourself.
I take back everything
that I said.
I'm so sorry.
I really love you.
Oh!
You don't think I know that?
Oh, we're gonna
get through this.
We will.
I must admit...
I didn't expect this
when you said you wanted
to sit down and talk.
The flowers, first of all,
and now this? I mean...
I know.
I was concerned when Mia told me
you were getting
anonymous messages, too.
Why didn't you say something?
Because I'm more worried
about Mia than myself.
Why our daughter?
I mean, she's never done
anything to anyone.
What?
You just called Mia
"our daughter."
[chuckles] Yeah.
I gotta admit...
I like not being enemies.
That makes two of us.
Cheers to that!
[laughs]
Cheers to that.
I'm not sure
I ever really appreciated
how selfless you are with Mia.
I always thought that
your motives were maybe
selfish.
I was wrong.
I know that now.
I'm sorry, Maddy.
And not just about that...
I have another confession.
I've sorta been
following you and Mia around.
What?
I was worried about you...
About Mia.
I mean, even before
the whole cyberbully thing,
I was worried that you weren't
always keeping me in the loop.
You know, there's nothing
normal about that, Erik.
You're right,
I messed up, but
it did remind me of something...
How much Mia means to you.
How much you mean to her.
- How much you still might...
- [text alert chimes]
Is it that late?
Oh, my god! They started
the recital without me.
[choir]
I don't need a medicine
Mm-mm
I don't need a wine
Mm, I tried
Every one of them
But they don't
Make you mine
I'm singing
Hey, hey
Hey, hey
Doo, doo
I'm crazy for loving you
Hey, hey, hey
Doo, doo
I'm crazy
for loving you
Got control of me
And there's
nothing else I can do
-Hey.
-Doo, doo
-Hey.
-Doo, doo-doo, doo
Crazy for loving you
[applauding]
[cheering]
Aw, they were great,
weren't they?
Mm-hmm.
[indistinct buzz and chatter]
I've been late
because of what's going on
with Mia.
And what's going on with you.
Mia spoke to me
before the performance.
She let me know
that her cyberbully's
been taking aim
at people she cares about...
With you at the top of the list.
I'm the adult.
I have responsibilities.
There's no excuse.
You have nothing
to worry about, Madelyn.
I'm really trying my best.
Look.
What you and Mia
are going through
is unfathomable,
and the way
you're holding it together
with all your classes...
Some of the teachers
have let me know
how you've been
juggling everything,
or trying to.
I want you to know
I've submitted
your review early,
with high praise
and a bump in pay.
What?
One less thing to worry about.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Eliot.
I know you can hear me.
Is that a black eye?
What happened?
Unsolicited attack
at Greta's party.
You know...
The one you were
supposed to meet me at?
Who did this to you?
Like you even care.
Eliot!
Of course I do.
Mind if I treat?
Oh, too late, I already paid...
But I'll take a rain check.
[packet crinkling]
So, we still on
for this weekend?
Of course we are.
Why wouldn't we be?
I know that you've got
your hands full,
and after you were late
for the recital...
I just don't want to be
adding more things.
You would only
be adding good things.
So, we're definitely on
for this weekend.
Good.
And thanks for treating.
Hey, Eliot!
Eliot.
Hey, wait.
I feel really bad
about your black eye.
That's not what you said
in your text.
What are you talking about?
After your big speech
about the kind of bullying
you experienced freshman year,
you have the nerve
to send me a message
making fun of the birthmark
on my leg?
What?
I literally told
no one at school about that.
You know it's the reason
I don't wear gym shorts in P.E.
That's not from me.
Yeah, so, what... I shouldn't
believe my lying eyes?
The text
is from your number, Mia!
When was the last time
you received a nasty message?
Or is this
all some inside-out play
to achieve permanent placement
in Josh's crowd?
Eliot, I would...
You know, I heard
some of your so-called friends
talking in the cafeteria.
Even Josh and your mom
are getting nasty messages now?
Has it been you all along, Mia?
You just forgot
to cloak your number
when you made fun
of my birthmark?
I would never send messages
like that to you,
or anyone!
Yeah, no one at school
is buying
your "poor me" act anymore,
even though "poor" is a word
lots of people still use
to describe you
behind your back!
[]
Who are you?
Where are you from?
Come uninvited
You write so wrong
You follow me home
Do you share my path
To my way home?
Invading my space
Do you come in peace?
Or do you want more?
I see your breath
Same time
Same place
You know
I'm on my own
Touching my face
Leave me alone
Get out of my head
Take it away
Get out of my bedroom
Nobody to call
Am I being poisoned
You're under my skin...
[school bell ringing]
For real, Mia?
Oh, Summer, hey.
I haven't seen you since...
"A little desperate"?
That's how you see me?
I thought we really hit off
that night at Glowing Greens,
but I guess not.
We did!
And I-I never said that...
Please. How stupid
do you think I am?
Wait. Check that...
I was stupid to think you and me
could be friends on the real.
This is exactly why
I wasn't at your pointless
speech about bullies...
'Cause, turns out,
you're as big a bully
as anything you had to deal with
freshman year.
This is all getting
out of control!
How can someone send Kira
a text from my number?
It's called "SMS spoofing."
What?
You can send a text
from someone else's number.
It still doesn't explain
how someone knew.
Eliot told me
about his birthmark.
A lot of people have birthmarks!
Well, and what about Summer...
Saying I called her
"a little desperate"?
Did you?
Only in my journal.
Not out loud to anyone!
[gasps] Oh, my god.
My journal!
I can't find it!
Calm down.
I'm sure it's somewhere.
It's not here!
Okay.
When is the last time
you wrote in it?
I don't know!
Maybe a week ago?
You haven't seen it, have you?
Up until five minutes ago,
I didn't even know you wrote in
an old-school journal.
I thought you guys did
everything online these days.
Mom!
Okay, the journal. Right.
Who else knows about it?
Only one other person.
[clack]
[rummaging]
This what you were referring to?
That's my journal.
I didn't put that in there.
I never even saw it before.
You were right
to contact my office.
Thank you.
Let's continue this in private.
Continue what, exactly?
Contacting your parents
to explain
why you're being suspended.
Are you kidding me?
You think I would...?
You better watch your back,
'cause I'm not your cyberbully.
All right, enough. Let's go!
Everyone else, back to class!
He thinks I'm the one
doing this to myself.
Eliot and I are so close.
Didn't you say he wanted
a different kind
of "close," though?
Yeah, but you don't
know him like I do.
I don't think Eliot
would do something like this.
We can never know anyone's
full intent in life, Mia...
Not even those closest to us.
We'll continue to investigate
how he got a hold
of the journal,
and we're gonna get
a court order to seize his phone
to see if the text messages
he's been getting
are self-generated.
At this point,
I think
it's someone close to Mia.
But that's not just Eliot...
is it?
Why don't you
head back to class?
I need to speak
with your mother.
[]
It's important you stop
hindering my investigation,
Ms. Keith.
Oh, but I'm the one
that called you
about Eliot
stealing Mia's journal?
An assumption that paid off.
I know protecting Mia's
a top priority,
but you have to share everything
to help us find
who's harassing your daughter.
You can't just pick and choose.
Mia told me that
you're getting nasty messages.
I'll need those screenshots.
Oh, of course.
I've deleted most of them
because they are horrible,
but I will send what I've got.
What happened today tells me
we're getting really close
to cracking this.
We usually do
when things escalate
to this level,
because the perp
eventually messes up.
I am so relieved to hear that.
Thank you so much, Detective.
Have a good day, Ms. Keith.
[]
[Mia sobbing]
You all right?
Everyone in school's talking
about what went down with Eliot.
I mean,
the pennies in your locker...
Brutal.
Kinda... yeah.
[Mia sniffling]
Well, bad on me
for coming at you
while you were
already under attack.
[Mia sighing heavily]
Look.
Want to know the real reason
why I wasn't at your speech?
I, um
well...
I was one of the kids who
threw pennies freshman year,
and it still haunts me
to this day.
Look, I can't even tell you
why I did it,
other than being
completely terrified
of getting bullied myself,
but that's no excuse,
so, I'm really sorry, Mia.
For then, for now,
and just for everything
that you're going through.
But I did...
I did call you desperate
in my journal.
Oh.
Well, that's okay.
But I'm the one
who's desperate, Summer.
You all have your futures,
your colleges on lock,
and I can't say
the same for myself.
But Josh said you have
your acceptance letter to UNEF.
It does zero good
if I can't pay for it.
I'll feel better
when Principal Allen writes
my recommendation letter.
Look, you'll get
your scholarship,
and until you know for sure,
well, I mean,
maybe we could
be desperate together.
Thanks, Summer.
Come here.
[Maddy] That's what
I wanted to ask you about...
The scholarship
recommendation letter
that you said you'd write Mia?
Oh, I thought
you were gonna ask me
why Eliot's only suspended
instead of expelled.
Oh, no.
You and the Detective
can handle that!
Good. So,
you want to talk about.
Mia's scholarship
recommendation letter?
I think you should
hold off writing it.
What?
For now.
Just hear me out.
After everything
Mia's gone through
over the last few weeks,
I just think
that she's not quite ready
to be that far away from home
on an extended basis.
[sighs]
But UNEF's a top school
with a veterinary program
that Mia's very excited about.
Yes, and I share
her excitement, I do.
Um, I just think that, maybe,
after a couple years,
when she's more adjusted...
A community college
closer to home
would just be better
in the interim.
I want what's best for Mia,
I do.
I want to be there for her...
I need to be there for her!
And if she's 3,000 miles away,
it's not ideal.
I haven't had
an easy time of it.
I'm not sure
how I would have managed,
if it weren't for your help.
[sighing]
I'm just a single parent
doing the best I can.
Glad we didn't go through
with that breakup.
Something you wanted, not me.
I'm feeling a little guilty,
like I'm taking advantage of you
during a really difficult time.
I am happy for the distraction.
Mia and I've been through
so much.
Yeah.
Even if it turns out that
Eliot's not Mia's cyberbully,
they're gonna find out who is,
just like they did with Zoey...
You'll see.
Well, I just can't wait
for this whole thing
to be behind us.
I mean, for Mia's sake.
[calling out] Mom?
[more urgently] Mom!
- [phone ringing]
- It's Mia.
Everything okay, sweetie?
Principal Allen won't write
the recommendation letter
because of my test scores.
What? But your grades
have been great
until last semester.
He said I should consider
going to a local junior college.
Okay, don't panic.
We'll handle it.
Mommy will
take care of everything.
There anything I can do to help?
Where are you?
Home! I'm looking for you.
I'll get there as fast as I can.
What's my life gonna be
if I can't get
the scholarship to UNEF?
Let me worry about that.
I'm so sorry. I gotta go.
- Yeah. No need to explain.
- I'm so sorry.
Go do what you do best...
Being "mom of the year."

Restraining order
against Madelyn Keeting?
"Must remain
at least point-five miles away
from Erik Keeting at all times"?

It's your phone!
Mia, I can explain...
Ma'am, uh, let me know
if you need any more
of those burner phones.
I saved you freshman year.
I will save you again.
[snapping]
[Maddy] You cannot let
one crazy person
define who you are.
[breath shaking]
[doorbell chimes]
You're gonna want to hear
what I have to say.
If it doesn't start with,
"I was wrong about everything,
Eliot,"
hard pass!
Hold up! I was wrong!
About everything.
My mom's my cyberbully.
So she did set me up?
She set us all up!
She's psychotic.
She took my journal
and she hid it in your locker.
I'm really sorry.
It wasn't you.
It was your psycho mom.
What are you going to do now?
I don't know,
but we're gonna figure it out.
[phone buzzing]
[phone buzzing]
Eliot?
I wasn't sure who else to call.
Well, I'm not sure
we should be talking.
It's Mia.
Something is wrong.
What?
I talked to her before bed.
She was tired, but sounded fine.
We were FaceTiming just now,
and
she said
she was going to...
[voice catches]
hurt herself.
Bad.
What?
She was reading
some of the messages to me,
and she was getting upset,
and I tried calming her down,
telling her
we were still friends,
but she lost it,
and she said she was going
to end things,
"once and for all."
Oh, my God!
Mia!
[call ends]
[thumping]
[text alerts chiming]
Mia?
[text alerts chiming]
[thumping persistently]
Mia, I know you're in there!
I hear your phone blowing up.
[grunts]

Oh, no.
No, no, no, no. Mia!

Destroying evidence?
This isn't what it looks like.
You're just confused.
Confused?
Confused about what, exactly?
My coming apart at the seams?
My not believing in myself?
All planned
so I'd need you more...
Need you to save me,
like you did freshman year,
or at least that was the goal.
Right, Mother?
Mia! Wait!
Please, try to see this
from my point of view.
There's a reason
I did what I did.
It was for you!
It was for us.
We are always so much better
when we have each other's backs.
I started to feel
you pulling away.
You know? With your new school
and your new friends,
and your new life, and...
I started to get lonely
like after the divorce,
back when you saved me.
You expect me to buy this BS?
I'm not the bad guy here.
And I don't like your tone!
You sound like your father!
At least
he was trying to protect me.
He let me believe you filed
for the restraining order.
I found the paperwork,
along with your collection
of burner phones.
Erik needed protection from you,
not the other way around!
You should thank me.
I made you take
a good look at your life
and the people in it.
You made me think
Eliot was my cyberbully!
The police took him
out of school.
We will talk about this later,
when you're willing
to listen to reason.
You think it's reasonable
that the kids at my school
thought I was
doing this to myself?
I only meant to send
a few texts,
but then,
when they brought us closer...
"A few texts"?
You mean the hundreds
of hurtful messages?
The photo of Josh
and me kissing?
Planting my journal
in Eliot's locker?
And you reaped
all the benefits, didn't you?
They all came to your defense.
And yours!
You got to play
the distraught mother,
fighting for her daughter,
and everyone rallied around you!
Oh, yes,
after the cyberbullying,
everybody cared about me,
and I needed them as insurance,
in case you left me for good,
because I was
facing life alone...
After dedicating
every waking hour to you!
I got you in the private school
that you wanted,
I saved you freshman year
from all the bullying...
That was all me!
That was all me, and you were
just gonna abandon me?
I'm pretty sure
they call that "growing up."
Just one more question.
How could you
write those messages?
I listened
to the kids at school,
to see how they talked,
so that you didn't think
they were from me.
I'm talking about
how cruel you were...
The horrible things
that you said to me,
to make me feel
like I was nothing!
[woman's voice] Okay,
that's everything we need.
What is that?
You've been on speaker
this entire time.
[door handle clicks]
Madelyn Keith,
you're under arrest.
You okay?
You have the right
to remain silent.
Anything you say
can and will be used against you
in a court of law...
I know my rights!
And I know that a phone call
cannot be recorded
unless two people agree
in the state of Oregon.
Actually, there's no need
for mutual consent in our state.
That being said, I don't think
Mia recorded the call.
You record anything?
I accidentally forgot
to disconnect with you, is all.
Mia, I love you! Mia, please!
Listen, I cared for you
your whole life!
Why can't you care for me
for a change?
[thud]

You don't have to go
back to school, you know.
You can take the ACTs
and avoid having
to look everyone in the eye.
Mom tried to isolate me,
rob me, of being me.
That's why she never wanted me
to have my own pet,
'cause it would've taken
the attention away from her.
Your mom's always been
a bit desperate for love.
I just didn't realize
to what level.
I should have.
Mom was working against
the two of us,
the same way she was working
against me and Josh,
and even Eliot.
You and I never had a chance.
Well, what's important
is what happens now.
You feel that, right?
Having you in my house...
Our house...
It's everything.
I take back what I said
about you skipping
the rest of the semester.
You got this.
They tried their best
to bring me down
But I'm just
growing stronger now
They could never
steal my crown
Mm
'Cause I reach for the...
Reach for the stars
And I shoot for the...
Shoot for the moon
No, there's nothing, no
That I can't do
Mia!
They let you back in here?
Could say the same to you.
Crazy, huh?
But enough about your mom.
Too soon?
Not soon enough.
I'm not sure I'm ready for this.
You are.
...I reach for...
I reach for it all
I'm a wrecking ball
Wrecking ball
I'm a wrecking ball...
Are you sure you're game
to make up two weeks' worth
of studies by next Monday?
Kind of look forward
to focusing on schoolwork
after everything.
Ohh.
I am sorry, Mia.
I'm sorry I didn't recognize
what now seems
like the clear signs
of a mental disorder
sooner.
My mom fooled everyone.
Seems like
that was her superpower.
Maybe,
but when she asked me
not to write
that scholarship letter for you,
that was a red flag
that I should have noticed.
You know, you could always just
take a summer course or two,
especially since we've already
missed the deadline.
I'm not giving up
on going to UNEF this fall.
My mom's manipulation
isn't gonna keep me from that,
or any of my goals.
What?
I'm just
impressed
by the very intelligent
young person in front of me.
It's true, Mia.
Not a lot of people could've
gone through what you did
and bounced back this quickly.
You're an inspiration.
Never let anyone
take who you are away from you.
Thank you.
I'm impressed.
No one thought
you'd have the guts
to finish out the semester.
I kind of surprised myself.
So, um
are we all right?
I guess.
Trying to stay focused
on getting out of here,
starting college.
I heard you missed the deadline
for your scholarship.
Yeah, but my dad
was able to get a loan
from his credit union.
I'll apply
for another scholarship
second semester.
I'm going to go to UNEF
in the fall.
So, uh, maybe
we go back to the beginning
of you and me,
before any of this cyberbullying
stuff played out?
Okay.
I heard you're going
to the University
of Northeast Florida.
Oh
are you going there, too?
Cold rain
Warm breeze
I feel again
That's all I need
Come alive
Break free
Out of the shadows
into the heat
Love something...
[calling out] Hello?
Heard Scot posted your bail.
Well, you and your dad wouldn't.
Scot wouldn't even look at me.
Wouldn't even give me
a ride home,
all thanks to you.
Victim mode's never a good look.
'Cause you went public with
our little misunderstanding,
I will never work as a teacher
in the Pacific Northwest again.
"Misunderstanding"?
Mia, we're-we're better
as a team, you know?
I-If you just drop the charges,
we could move to Florida,
and we could start
a whole new life together.
Promise you'll get
professional help, Madelyn.
"Madelyn"?
I'm your mother!
I'll be at Dad's till I graduate
and leave for Florida.
I just stopped by to pick up
a few last things.
Well, maybe we can spend
a little time together
this weekend?
Watch a few
of our favorite episodes?
"Together..
Forever
no matter... ".
Yeah. Text me.
