Mystery Island: House Rules (2025) Movie Script

(logo whooshing)
(gentle dramatic music)
(logo dings)
(dramatic music)
(wind whooshing)
(suspenseful music)
(Emilia panting)
(Emilia gasps)
(gentle dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
[Jason] And now you
have nowhere else to go.
(Emilia gasps and screams)
(dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
If it's a push
rather than a jump,
the body would be
further from the tower.
Also.
The killer forgot to
retrace their steps,
leaving room for a trail.
(gentle bright music)
[Jason] Genius.
Ah! I'm excited to do
a murder at the ruins.
You know, expand to other
areas of the island.
Oh, "Blood on the Rocks."
I have a better idea.
What about "Blood
on the Rockies"?
What do you mean?
Imagine: murder in the snow.
Snow on "Mystery Island"?
May I introduce you
to "Mystery Mountain"?
So, as we all know,
there has been the occasional
actual murder here.
There's also been 45 games
where no one was harmed.
Yeah, and my book
is nearly finished,
which will provide greater
context to the actual murders.
No, no, no, no, you
misunderstand me.
The actual murders have
increased the desire
to come to "Mystery Island."
We are currently booked
up 13 months ahead.
So I pitched to Carlos
an expansion idea,
and we came up with
"Mystery Mountain."
He's just bought the
property in Montana.
I didn't think Carlos was open
to anything off the island.
Oh yes, it did take
a bit of convincing,
but that's why I'm here,
to think about the future
of "Mystery Island."
And with this new property,
we can start the expansion.
That's great, but I'm not sure
him and I can handle writing
games for both properties.
Ah, no worries there.
Carlos is hard at work
vetting the new staff.
Ooh, and when he's
done, he's bringing
the "Mystery
Mountain" team here.
Oh, fun. So then they'll
play one of our games?
Oh, contrarian. We're
going to play their game.
(gentle dramatic
music) (Janey exclaims)
(gentle spirited music)
(gentle music)
(rain pattering)
To new beginnings.
(wind whooshing)
(sighs) It's a bit scary
to be without the
job that defined me.
How was it, saying
goodbye to London?
Well, with the weather,
I feel like I've
brought London here.
(Jason chuckles) (Emilia scoffs)
You sure this is what you want?
You know I love my work.
-And you're great at it.
-Thank you.
But I've been thinking
about this for a while,
so I was looking for a sign
the past couple of months
as to whether I
should stay in London
or move here and make "Mystery
Island" my full-time work.
Did that sign look
anything like this?
(chuckles) I won't
deny that's part of it.
But also, have you heard
about the Lonnie Alfred case?
Lonnie Alfred, the psychiatrist
that killed seven people?
Well, I couldn't
tell you at the time,
but I was the one who
got him to confess.
Wow, that's amazing.
Yeah, he threatened to do to me
what he did to
his seven victims.
And he's not the first person
to make that kind of threat,
but I decided he was
gonna be the last.
I fear he has connections
on the other side.
You're safe here.
Hi. My body yearns
And the words you serve
But come to mind it hurts
Around that corner is my
favorite seafood place.
Rosa makes the best ceviche.
(chuckles) I'm so lucky
to have a friend that,
wait, you know,
someone who can show me
around my new neighborhood.
Lemme show you my
favorite street, Em.
Look, Em, I don't
think it's any secret
that I like you, and.
Yeah.
I'm just really looking forward
to spending more time
with you outside of work.
Me too.
(Emilia gasps)
(soft suspenseful music)
Um, sorry, I-I
thought I saw someone.
I- I think I'm just
exhausted. Jet lag, and.
Let's get you home.
I think we both need
a good night's sleep
if we're gonna be on
our A game tomorrow.
-Jason.
-I know, it's complicated
with us working together.
Let's just take it
one day at a time.
(gentle music)
(gentle upbeat music)
Hey, you.
Hey, yourself.
Did you get some sleep?
A bit. (chuckles)
I see they've already
upgraded the boat.
Ooh, I wonder if Janey
knows about that.
[Bennett] Well, hello, you two.
Bennett, how are you?
Oh, a bit discombobulated
to be honest.
You know this is the first time
since joining "Mystery Island"
that I have been off-island
for the entire week?
Oh, here's my new
assistant, Tom Robinson.
[Tom] Ms. Bennett!
Please meet Detective
Trent and Dr. Priestly.
Oh wow! The brains
behind the game.
It is an honor to meet you both.
You too.
Oh, Miss Teri,
okay. Miss Teri, hm.
Oh, like mystery!
Oh, oh, I-I get it.
-Jason!
-Carlos.
Emilia! So excited to
play a game with you.
And Ms. Bennett. Pleasure to
finally meet you in person.
And you.
Welcome to the "Mystery
Island" family, Tom.
Thank you, sir, I
am very excited.
I'm very, very excited.
Thank you. Okay.
That's different. A new boat.
Oh, "Mystery Island"
has set a high bar.
Hope "Mystery
Mountain" can meet it.
I have every
confidence they can.
(gentle triumphant music)
(gentle music)
Oh, it is good to be back.
What do you say, you
and I solve this mystery
in record-breaking time?
Exactly what I was thinking.
And then we can
celebrate on the mainland
with another dinner date.
Sounds perfect.
(chuckles) Thank you.
I'll see you Monday.
(gentle upbeat music)
[Jason] Mind telling us
who our counterparts are?
[Carlos] Their team leader,
Janey's opposite number,
is Dex Longstreth.
[Emilia] That entitled
frustrating human from Oxford?
[Carlos] Maybe back then, but
he has an impressive resume
and has put together
a crackerjack team.
Dex Longstreth, heir to the
Longstreth Luxury Hotel brand,
hospitality and leadership
is in his blood,
but he's trying to make his
own mark in the industry.
Regan Morris, a police
detective with the Chicago PD.
She's one of the game writers.
Dr. Stanley Williams, acclaimed
criminal psychiatrist,
who's helped the FBI
catch dozens of killers.
Inga Sorenson, "Mystery
Mountain"'s own majordomo,
who we were able to hire
away from a Swedish mogul.
And her head of
security, Khalif Brooks.
Ex-Army Special Forces medic.
(soft upbeat music)
I dare say we're ready.
Remember the keys to success:
attention to detail, conviction,
and never forget
to make work play.
(birds chirping)
Carlos!
Dex! (chuckles)
(Dex chuckles and groans)
Emilia, darling!
Lovely to see you, Dex.
Mm, (lips smacking) mwah.
Janey! It's been far too long.
I was going to
suggest the opposite.
Oh! Good, you haven't
lost your bite.
Didn't know we were going
to a "Great Gatsby"
costume party.
Thank you for the compliment.
It's one of my favorite novels.
Of course it is.
You must be Jason Trent!
That's what it says
on my passport.
It says Dexter Crispin
Neville Drummond Longstreth
on mine.
Oh, that must be fun
for the customs people.
(Dex laughs)
Bennett, welcome, and thank you
for letting us
invade your domain.
Oh, (chuckles) I didn't
really have a choice,
Mr. Longstreth.
(chuckles) And you're the
newly-hired Tom Robinson.
Yes, I am.
(laughs) Welcome all!
Wardrobe's a bit much, no?
(gentle upbeat music)
(gentle suspenseful music)
No, wait! What are you
doing with our staff?
Just bringing a little
added realism to our game.
So no fancy meals, no
housekeepers putting mints
on your pillows.
What? (scoffs) Well, that's-
A bold choice. I like it.
Now we'll all convene
on the veranda
for cocktails for our
crystal-themed night.
But first we'll have
a glass of champagne
and then you'll be shown to
your rooms by your counterparts.
Carlos, you'll come
with Janey and me.
(gentle upbeat music)
Pleasure, Dr. Priestly.
Call me Emilia,
please, Dr. Williams.
Only if you'll call me Stanley.
(Emilia chuckles)
(gentle bright music)
(birds chirping)
(Emilia chuckles) (group
softly chattering)
Yeah, wow, I can see
you're really leaning
into the mountain theme.
Ah.
Oh, John Murtaugh.
Dex felt the founder should
be in a place of primacy.
Oh, I wonder if
Dex didn't realize
that the founder tried to
frame Carlos for murder.
(suspenseful music)
(screen whooshes)
(trigger clicks) (dart
whizzes and thuds)
(suspenseful music)
I've never seen that before.
Mr. Del Fuego, you
need to come with us.
-(screen whooshes)
-Well, hello.
Dex, really?
I mean, this is a bit
gauche, even for you.
On the other hand, it
is good to be reminded
of the dangers of hubris.
Well, that's just what I
thought, Carlos. Shall we?
(soft gentle bright music)
So this is your room.
Thank you.
I, uh, I must confess, it
does feel quite strange
being a guest in
one of these rooms.
Whoa! (gasps)
This is sweet.
Here we are.
(gentle music)
Oh, (chuckles) I love
all the little touches.
(Stanley chuckles)
This is amazing.
Oh, so glad you like it.
Here you are, Janey.
Yes, though I do prefer
the east-side suites.
Oh well, perhaps this side
will give you a new perspective?
[Janey] Hm.
Don't hesitate to
ask me for anything.
I'm here to make your stay
as comfortable as possible.
Oh, thank you.
This is, uh, way out of my
comfort zone. (chuckles)
You're in good hands, I
have a lot of experience,
though not as much as you do.
Your reputation proceeds you.
Well, thank you.
That's very generous.
Just enjoy being
a guest for once,
and I hope you enjoy
playing the game later.
Well, I have to admit,
I'm very excited
about that. (chuckles)
Great. So get some rest and
we'll see you for cocktails.
Oh, Ms. Sorenson,
just one last thing.
Your previous
employer, the mogul?
(Inga sighs)
Anything I should know?
I believe in moving
forward, not backwards.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(gentle dramatic music)
(Bennett laughs)
[Khalif] You haven't
actually been on the island,
is that right?
Yeah, yeah, I-I've seen photos,
but I mean this,
this is another deal.
You know, best first
week on the job ever.
Well, just remember
to stay alert.
Anything can be a clue.
Wait. (gentle suspenseful music)
Has the game already started?
I'm just saying you
should always be aware.
Hey, can you gimme a clue?
Yeah, I don't wanna embarrass
myself in front of this group.
Yeah, they're my new
bosses. (sniffles)
Also, I could use the help.
So you're playing
the innocent new guy?
I can respect that.
(gentle dramatic music)
-(door clicks and thuds)
-I am.
I am looking
forward to your team
playing the "Mystery
Mountain" teams game.
Well, technically we
are just one team.
(Dex chuckles)
But if you ever need any
pointers, tips, ideas,
I am more than willing to help.
(chuckles) That's
quite all right.
Oh no, seriously Dex,
I have been doing this
a lot longer than you.
I do know what makes
these games successful.
Oh, I have no doubt that you do,
but you are here
to play our game.
Janey, do try to
relax and enjoy.
(Janey scoffs)
Who knows, maybe you'll
pick up some pointers.
Yes, as would you.
For starters not putting
the COO of "Mystery Island"
in one of the smaller suites.
[Regan] So you're
still on the job?
[Jason] I am. I was
told you are too.
I was, but things changed.
Put my papers in a
couple of weeks ago.
Mind if I ask why?
I was ready for a change.
And I thought this would
be the perfect opportunity
to use my skills,
but not have to deal
with the real crimes
and bureaucracy.
Plus the money they'll
pay. (Jason scoffs)
I'm not sure why you haven't
retired from the force.
I guess I still love
catching bad guys.
It never gets sold, does it?
It does not.
I already miss that part of it.
Here's your room, Detective.
Well, I'll leave you to it then.
I-I just wanted
to say, (chuckles)
I'm familiar with your work
and it's really impressive.
Oh! Well, thank you, Emilia.
I'd say the same of you.
Y-you know of my work?
Oh yes. I have
contacts in London.
I understand you were the one
who got Lonnie
Alfred to confess?
I was, yeah.
Impressive.
But now you've left the
Metropolitan Police?
It was time to leave,
and to stop being
threatened by murderers.
Ah!
(soft slow bright music)
(group softly chattering)
Khalif, shut up.
You know about the spirit?
-Yeah, I might.
-Yeah.
(group continues
softly chattering)
(soft slow bright
music continues)
You all right?
Look at him. Sucking
up to Carlos.
(sighs) I have to say,
Dex has assembled
an impressive team.
You already have
an impressive team.
Everything good here?
Ah, Janey's having second
thoughts about the expansion.
It was your idea. You
convinced Carlos to do it.
Yes, I want the expansion.
I just, just don't
want to be replaced.
-Impossible.
-Never.
Swell.
They are impressive, but let's
not get lulled into trusting
any one of these people.
We need to view
them as the enemy
if we are to solve their
game and possibly quickly,
and show Carlos who the
true mystery masters are.
Hm! (glass clinking)
So if I can ask you all to
employ your imaginations
and envision a snow-covered
peak above the mansion,
I can then welcome you
all to "Mystery Mountain."
(group exclaims and applauds)
-All right.
-Wow!
Now we are taking
a different tack
to "Mystery Island" with
its quaint golden age
of detective fiction
lack of technology.
Here on "Mystery Mountain,"
we embrace innovation.
While "Mystery Island" has
no cell service or WiFi,
we have this past week installed
a temporary Bluetooth network.
The phones Inga and
Khalif are handing out
will be a crucial part
of playing the game.
Oh, this is so cool.
Uh, mine's just a blank
screen at the moment.
Correct, when it comes online,
that will signal the
start of the game.
Delightful. (chuckles)
[Dex] Cheers.
-Cheers.
-Cheers.
[Jason] Cheers.
It is clever.
Em, what did I just say?
Do not get lulled by
gimmicks. Stay sharp.
(gentle dramatic music)
(group softly chattering)
(opera vocalist singing
in foreign language)
(group laughing)
Sorry, Tom, have we met?
Oh, I don't think so.
Huh, I'm usually
quite good with faces,
and I swear we've met before.
People say that to
me all the time.
Much just have one of
those faces, you know?
So Dex, tell me about the
process of assembling this team.
Uh, well, Carlos gets
most of the credit.
He's pulled together
an impressive group.
Given the success
of "Mystery Island,"
it made sense to
keep the same formula
and to find the best,
most qualified people
in their individual fields.
Our first call was to Stanley.
His renown as a criminal
psychologist is well-known.
That's the nicest thing
he's said about me all week.
(group laughs)
He's still learning
to work with others.
But uh, we were
looking for someone
with a similar skillset to you,
as that's worked so effectively
here on "Mystery Island."
-Mm.
-And I suggested
we bring on a cop,
because I know the pairing
has worked so well here.
I may have been the
next person they hired,
but I wasn't the first
cop they approached.
-I was 12th.
-That's not true.
Is it Dex?
(suspenseful music) (Dex gasps)
How could you know that?
I'm a detective. It's my
job to find things out.
Like the fact that Inga
has a criminal record.
(ominous music)
(Dex gasping) (group murmuring)
Clearly absurd.
Impossible. We vetted everyone.
Your vetting process failed.
Do you wanna tell
them what you did?
How dare you?
She was convicted
of manslaughter.
Killed her husband back when
her name was Sophie Nidason.
She did three years
in a prison in Germany
and paid a lot of money
to buy a new identity.
(slow suspenseful music)
Inga!
(gentle suspenseful music)
We begin with a killer among us.
Dex?
I'll go and speak with Inga
and get to the bottom of this.
(suspenseful music)
Don't worry, it's just
anxiety medication.
I take it daily
whether I'm accusing
my colleagues of
manslaughter or not.
-Hm!
-And are there
any other criminals on your
team we should know about?
No. Everyone else checked out.
Dex really didn't seem
to know about Inga.
Agreed. It's concerning.
(phones chiming)
-Oh, it's a letter.
-A!
-G!
-M for me.
Ooh, I have an M too.
I-I got an E.
I bet you it's an anagram!
-(laughs) Oh, right!
-G.
(group chattering and chuckling)
-What about that?
-Wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait, wait.
- If you do- - No.
-That here.
-Oh, yes.
-Oh, oh!
-Oh!
[Bennett] Game room. We
need to go to the game room.
[Tom] All right! Okay, let's go.
[Janey] All right, don't
forget your notebooks.
(wind rumbling)
What now?
-(lightning crashes)
-Oh!
I don't remember seeing
thunder in the forecast.
If Dex were here, he'd tell
you that on "Mystery Mountain"
weather will often be a factor,
so we thought we'd provide some!
Oh! (chuckles) I must
admit, it is quite clever.
(gong bangs)
Oh, this is good
fun. (phones chiming)
Oh, my phone is saying an R.
-I have a D.
-Oh, I've got an I.
I bet you it's gonna
spell riddle. Right?
So are we trying to
find two riddles?
Oh, might I suggest that
we mirror the screen?
Mirror? Oh, you mean line up?
-Yes, precisely, Tom.
-Oh! Yes!
(gentle suspenseful
music) (thunder rumbling)
(screen chime) (group laughs)
Nice! There we go.
Well done, Bennett.
(phones dinging)
Oh, do you have a keypad?
I'll try and type it in. Steak.
-Hm.
-Oh.
Uh, ooh, lemme try the
homophone, S-T-A-K-E.
How about W-E double
I space D-O-N-E?
(screen chimes) (hands clapping)
-(group exclaims and laughs)
-Clever!
(group applauding)
[Woman] Good evening.
Outside! Outside.
Yes, go, go, go, go!
-It's started!
-Oh!
Good evening. (gentle
suspenseful music)
Good evening, I'm
Evelyn Murtaugh.
Welcome to my home.
Looks just like Evelyn.
And sounds like her.
A hologram. Impressive.
It's uncanny.
That's next level AI.
"The waves were dead."
The tides were in their grave.
The moon, their mistress
had expired before.
The winds were withered
in the stagnant air.
The clouds perished.
Darkness had no need
of aid from them.
"She was the universe."
Yeah, I know that poem.
It's, it's "Darkness" by Byron.
Someone on this island is
not who they seem to be.
And their aim is foul play.
I will graciously provide
you with three riddles
to help you discover
the imposter.
The first riddle.
Tell yourself that all mysteries
are not difficult to illuminate
with the proper method.
First, find the
ember of curiosity
that burns like an ache
in the heart of everyone.
The second riddle.
No one ate while
the scion waited.
Far too confused to
follow his mother's words
for his own good.
The third riddle.
The evening sun is hidden
shrouded in deception.
With discovery comes failure.
Now to work, my
sleuthing friends.
(Janey, Emilia and Bennett gasp)
Like I said. (Janey
and Emilia gasp)
Embracing technology.
Where did you sneak in from?
During Mrs. Murtaugh's speech.
That certainly was a
lot of information.
Can we replay it? I may
have missed a line or four.
Spectacular opening, Dex!
Thank you, Carlos.
And I'd like to assure you all
that Inga's manslaughter
charge was for losing control
of her car while on black ice,
which sadly resulted
in her husband's death.
I would've told you that
if you hadn't rushed
out of the room.
My sincere apologies
for the interruption.
No problem, Dex.
So, team, where should we start?
Why don't we begin
where Evelyn did?
With Lord Byron's
poem "Darkness"?
In the library.
(Emilia chuckles)
(gentle dramatic music)
(group chattering)
"Byron's Complete Poems."
-You got it?
-Yes! Okay.
-(metal clatters)
-Oh!
This must be related somehow.
(gasps) That is
a Cardano grille.
Which is what?
A cipher device from
the 16th century.
When placed over a
piece of writing,
it can reveal a secret
message underneath.
Wow, impressive
knowledge, Bennett.
Well, you know, I'm
partial to a puzzle.
Well, let, let, let's,
let's put it over
the "Darkness" poem.
Oh yeah. Okay, oh!
Here you go.
Thanks, Stanley.
Okay. Uh, "Darkness," page 89.
Ah! It appears to be saying.
Oh, nothing.
Oh, uh, ah! Try rotating it.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Still nothing.
-(Janey sighs)
-Maybe the, um,
uh, the grille thing
i-is supposed to be
put over something else.
Like Evelyn's first riddle?
-Right!
-Oh, okay.
I have it written down, but
my spacing is arbitrary.
Oh, we should put it
into iambic pentameter.
Why that?
Because that's what Byron
used for "Darkness."
Oh! Hm!
-Can I borrow this?
-Yeah.
You should mirror the font size
and, and write the riddle,
uh, in between the lines.
Okay, tell yourself that all
mysteries are not difficult
to illuminate with
the proper method.
In the heart of everyone of us.
Okay!
(gentle suspenseful music)
(Emilia gasps)
Tell em ach us.
Tell em ach us.
Tell em ach us.
Tell em. (gasps)
-Telemachus!
-Telemachus!
Em, we're brilliant!
Oh, so maybe the imposter is
Greek, or, or, or a prince.
Oh! Um, an archer!
Hold on.
Forgive me, I didn't go to
Oxford and minor in the classics.
-(Janey clears throat)
-Right, yeah, sorry.
Um, have you heard of Odysseus?
-Trojan Horse guy, right?
-Right.
So Telemachus was the son
of King Odysseus and Queen-
-Penelope.
-Penelope.
Okay. And the archer?
Well, Telemachus roughly
translates to archer.
But it actually means
far from battle,
because an archer can
kill from a distance.
-You're so good at this.
-Absolutely.
(Emilia laughs)
(dart whooshes) (Regan exclaims)
-(dramatic music)
-Oh!
(Regan gasps)
[Regan] (groans) What was that?
Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm okay.
Where did that come from?
(suspenseful music)
So it seems to have a
remote control trigger.
Oh, (chuckles) okay, okay.
We need to search the
"Mystery Mountain" team
for remote controls.
Dex, what was that move?
You knew about the dart.
Janey, hang on. This
isn't part of our game.
You expect me to believe that
after the Telemachus clue?
Well, I wrote most of this game
and I definitely didn't
write me being shot.
Maybe it was an old device
that just happened to go off.
I am sorry, but this is
an absurd coincidence.
I mean, Carlos, they are
obviously trying to thwart us
because we are getting close
to solving their game, man!
-Right.
-Already!
Yeah! (group laughing)
(group exclaims)
(dramatic music)
[All] Oh!
[Khalif] Step back. Step back.
Come on. Come on!
Carlos, this is not
part of the game.
Khalif, stop. Khalif, stop!
(Khalif gasps)
(somber music)
She's dead.
Oh! (sighs)
What the heck, what?
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Poison?
Well, we'll run forensics on it,
but it's coated with honey.
(somber music)
Well, her convulsions did look
like an anaphylactic shock.
I know it well, that's why I
never travel without an EpiPen.
She could be deathly allergic.
She is. It was part of
her medical profile.
This is madness.
Regan was targeted.
We do need to frisk
everybody for a remote.
Dex is right.
Empty your pockets.
(somber music)
Okay.
(group groaning)
[Tom] Everything now.
Well, that's a relief, I guess.
A relief? Someone's dead.
I thought this was just a game?
(scoffs) It was supposed to be.
The remote could have been
triggered from some distance.
Who else knew about
Regan's medical history?
It was on the "Mystery
Island" server,
so any one of us
or any one of you.
And anyone who could've
hacked the server. Right?
I need to call Ray.
He's the chief of
police on the mainland.
(somber suspenseful music)
(foot thuds)
There's an issue
with the phone line.
Nothing.
(explosion crashes)
That didn't sound like
your thunder machine.
It wasn't.
(suspenseful music)
What on Earth?
Dex, please tell
me you have backup.
Someone cut the landline
and disabled your
Bluetooth network.
I think we should
probably leave the island.
Boat won't be back till Monday.
Please tell me we
have another boat.
We do, but the staff took
it back to the mainland
when Dex dismissed
them for added realism.
Well, it sounded like a
lovely idea at the time.
We can no longer
trust your ideas.
So we're stuck here.
That's terrifying.
It certainly is.
We can take measures
to ensure everyone's safety,
but first I need to
secure the crime scene.
All of us!
(gentle dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
(group whispering)
-How is this possible?
-It's not possible.
-How?
-We were gone
for maybe 10 minutes.
Whoever took the body
couldn't have gotten far.
I need to search the mansion.
Jason.
It's fine, Em.
I'll clear the game room first,
you can all wait in there.
(suspenseful music)
(group whispering)
(thunder rumbling)
Not the night we expected.
Certainly not.
This is all my fault.
No, Dex, don't blame yourself.
But I'm in charge, Janey, the
responsibility falls to me.
I won't argue with that.
No sign of Regan's
body or a killer.
Should we search the
surrounding jungle?
Well, we need to ask ourselves,
why would the killer wanna
take her body outta here?
Uh, to draw us away from
the mansion and safety.
In addition, the killer
could be relying on
or taking advantage of the fact
that we're all exhausted,
physically and emotionally.
Stanley's right. We
should all get some rest.
Start fresh in the morning.
Oh, I concur.
I don't think anyone should
be on their own tonight,
so bunkmates are
Carlos and Khalif,
Dex and Tom, Bennett and
Inga, Janey and Emilia.
Stanley, you can go with Carlos.
I don't need a bunkmate.
What about you?
I'll keep watch.
I want everyone to lock your
windows and bolt your doors.
Stay safe, Tom.
You too.
Apologies for encroaching
on your space.
Oh, no, no, no. Not at all.
To be honest, I am
more than relieved
to have a roommate this evening.
Truthfully? Me as well.
(wind rumbling)
Well, I think it's no
secret that I wanted
to take the shine off Dex.
This is hardly how I had
hoped it would happen.
We know, Janey.
(Janey sighs)
Tell me it's gonna
be all right, Jason?
We're gonna be all right.
Are you just saying that
because I told you to?
Well, technically yeah,
but I'm gonna make
sure it's true.
Thank you.
Are you gonna make
sure you're all right?
Always.
(sighs) Please be careful.
I will be.
Do you promise?
I promise.
Okay.
-Night.
-Night.
(wind whooshing)
(somber music)
Em! Em, are you awake?
I am.
Well, are you trying to sleep?
I was.
Well, I was too, truly.
It's just, well, it's
my mind, it's racing.
Would you like me to teach
you a deep breathing exercise?
No, I-(sighs) I don't
think I want to sleep.
Janey!
(Emilia sighs)
What is it?
I don't want to start
building a murder board,
but I just can't help wondering
what motive somebody would
have for killing Regan.
Well, I would imagine she's
put several criminals away.
So this may be for revenge,
which hits a little
close to home.
But then why wouldn't they
allow us to leave the island?
I mean, if Regan
was the only target?
An excellent question. (sighs)
I think we should assume
that whomever did this
planned well in advance
and is far from finished.
(Janey sighs)
Right.
You'll show me this
breathing exercise then?
(Emilia sighs)
(insects chirping)
(gentle suspenseful music)
(flames crackling)
(suspenseful music)
(branches rustling)
Police! Come out from behind
the tree with your hands up!
(suspenseful music)
(insects chirping)
(Khalif sighs)
Khalif?
I wanted to take a quick
sweep of the grounds.
I'm sorry I scared you.
I want you to head back
inside and get some rest.
(insects chirping)
(somber music)
(Jason sighs)
(knuckles rapping)
It's Jason.
(Emilia sighing)
-Morning.
-Certainly is.
Did you not sleep?
-I didn't.
-Oh, Jason.
I just kept watch, did
a few perimeter walks.
I figured if anyone
was out there,
they'd wait till we were
asleep to make a move.
And did they?
All quiet.
Oh, so you're thinking
we should search
the rest of the island?
You read my mind.
(Emilia chuckles)
Oh good, (sighs)
The three of us made
it through the night.
Well, should we go
check on the others?
I'll get myself together.
Meet you down there.
Okay. Ready?
Ready.
(group softly chattering)
Oh, Ms. Sorenson,
what a lovely spread.
Thank you.
All right, everyone.
(sighs) The island is not
that big to begin with,
so whoever killed
Regan and took her body
couldn't have gotten far,
especially in the dark.
Jason, just a thought, if I may?
Is it possible the killer
hid or even buried her body
somewhere close by, maybe in
a hole they'd already dug,
and then moved further afield?
-Excellent thought.
-Thank you, Janey.
Agreed, I'm thinking
we work in teams,
operate on a search grid.
I simply can't chalk
it up to coincidence
that just as we solved
the Telemachus riddle,
Regan gets shot with an arrow.
Technically it was a dart.
Yeah, but my point is,
whomever set the device
that killed Regan not only knew
about her medical condition,
they knew about the
game you've written.
So there has to be a connection
between Regan and the killer.
Correct, so if the
killer has further plans,
it wouldn't be
unreasonable to think
those plans might be tied to
the rest of the game narrative.
So wait, you want us to
continue playing the game?
Okay, but maybe less
thunder this time?
Stanley, can you
share what was next?
I was afraid you were
gonna ask me this,
and unfortunately,
just as Regan and I
came up with the Evelyn idea,
I was called away by the FBI.
Are you saying you
don't know the solution
to the other two riddles?
I'm saying I don't actually know
the entire rest
of the narrative.
(Janey scoffs)
Dex told me he would
help Regan in my absence.
Dex?
Well, I-I did say that, but-
But what, Dex?
Regan said she could handle it.
She said that she would
reveal it to us all
after you'd solved
the first riddle.
[Emilia] Are you saying?
Nobody knows the
ending of the game?
(suspenseful music)
(slow dramatic music)
Okay, to clarify.
Only one person on your
team knew the answers
to the remaining riddles?
Well, I guess I
have a thing or two
to learn about the job.
All right, so then I suggest
that Stanley and I work on
figuring out the riddles,
and the rest of you
conduct the search.
You don't agree?
No, I, uh, I think you're
right about the riddles.
Jason doesn't like the idea
of leaving you here with me,
because Jason has quite
reasonably concluded
that while none of us could
have moved Regan's body,
there was always the possibility
of two culprits
working together.
One out there somewhere,
and the other right
here at this table
from the "Mystery
Mountain" team.
Yes, Detective?
That's right.
Oh come now, Stanley.
Our team was vetted.
Yeah well, we all know
how well that turned out.
I concur with Stanley,
that the "Mystery Island" team
has a reason to mistrust us.
Well, who, who is it
that you mistrust?
Inga, Khalif, Stanley?
You're not including
yourself on this list, Dex?
Remind me again who's
in charge of this game?
I didn't plan this.
No, clearly you didn't.
This is not my fault!
Carlos, you should have never
trusted someone like him
to lead a mission like this.
Someone like me?
Elitist, trust fund wannabe.
-Easy.
-You needed so desperately
to make a name for yourself,
it led to negligence!
That's enough! Stanley, cool it!
Dex, sit down. Now.
(Emilia sighs)
I still believe we
will find answers
if we solve the riddles.
Yes, I agree. I'll
join you and Stanley.
As will I.
I'd also like to stay.
I trust Stanley and
I'm quite terrified
about encountering
the killer out there.
That's fine, Inga.
Given the trust
issues, I volunteer
to partner with Khalif
on a search team.
Though I would request
smoother terrain.
I have a dodgy knee.
All right, well, then
you two go due east,
take the golf course
and surrounding area.
Tom, Janey, and I will
go south to the beach.
We rendezvous at the
beach cabana in one hour.
(soft gentle suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
So I wrote Evelyn's second
riddle in iambic pentameter
and laid the Cardano
grille over it.
-And it didn't work.
-(sighs) Exactly.
That would be far too easy.
The second riddle
was what again?
Okay. "No one ate
while the scion waited.
Far too confused to
follow his mother's words
for his own good."
-Sorry, what is scion?
-Uh, a descendant.
Usually someone from
a notable family.
So like Telemachus?
Yeah, like Telemachus,
but also like John
Murtaugh, son of Evelyn,
who was full of words.
Evelyn was obsessed with Greece
and set more than
one novel there.
(sighs) Where's
Evelyn? (whispers)
Oh, "Shadows of Santorini."
Yes, let's look for
additional Cardano grilles
and hidden papers.
Okay.
Look at this one?
"Greek To Me."
-Look at this one.
-Yeah, I think this is
-some product list.
-(speaks faintly) Yeah.
-Thank you.
-And this? Yes!
Why don't we each go
through these page by page
and, and see if we
find any annotations?
Oh, might I suggest that
we also scan the text
for any reference to
the second riddle?
Yeah. Great, okay,
let's settle in.
Um, if you don't mind,
I'm going to do my
reading on the veranda.
I promise to shout
if anyone approaches.
(suspenseful music)
(gentle dramatic music)
I thought maybe we'd see signs
of the killer bunked
on the beach overnight,
but there's nothing.
Hmm.
So now that Emilia's
moving closer,
do you think, you know?
You know how much I adore Em.
And?
And we agreed to take
it one day at a time.
Well, just don't spend too
many days before acting on it.
We never know how
many days we have.
Especially on this island.
(gentle dramatic music)
Oh!
-What?
-I just realized something.
There's a cryptic code
in the second riddle
far more simpler than
the Cardano grille.
It's a, it's number
substitution.
I don't follow.
Okay, no one, use
the numerical, ate.
Well, that's a number.
Oh, I get it. So
far too is a two.
To follow, another two.
-For his.
-Four. Exactly.
So 18224.
Maybe it's a specific
place in one of her books.
Perhaps a page number
and a line count.
Great idea, um, so it could be
page 182, line 24.
(gentle dramatic music)
Page 182 here is the
end of a chapter.
It's only seven lines long.
My page 182 is the
beginning of a chapter
and half the page is empty.
Mine's a description
of a Grecian heir.
Emilia?
Uh.
(dramatic music)
My page 182, line 24
is the second half of a sentence
where a mother is scolding
her disobedient son.
Like the riddle.
And line 24 is just one word.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Dexter.
(slow dramatic music)
Does this mean
Dex is the killer?
We have to tell Stanley.
(book thuds)
Look, I'll stay here
and continue working.
Okay. Let's go.
(gentle dramatic
music) (water sloshing)
Tom! Anything?
Nothing. You?
Well, maybe Dex and
Khalif had more luck.
They should be here by now.
(dramatic music) (Janey sighs)
Well, why don't we go
to the golf course?
Maybe we'll meet them on route?
(gentle suspenseful music)
Stanley?
Stanley?
We shouldn't have
let him wander off.
He wasn't wandering off.
He was coming to this spot.
Well, we need to find him.
I prefer to stay here.
Okay, you wait here,
Carlos and I'll go
and look for him.
Okay, I'll lock
myself into my room.
Okay.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(dramatic music)
(golf carts rattling)
(gentle suspenseful music)
What's that?
That's Khalif.
Khalif!
(Janey pants)
Are you okay?
No, no! Stay down, stay down.
Well, at least he's not dead.
Are you hurt? (Khalif groans)
Where's Dex?
That's a great question.
(soft gentle suspenseful music)
[Emilia] Stanley?
(gentle dramatic music)
[Carlos] Where's he gone?
Stanley?
(waves sloshing)
We should check the beach.
(sighs) Let's go.
(slow suspenseful music)
(gentle suspenseful music)
These must be Stanley's.
Well, this is the
only place left.
But why would he come down here?
(gentle suspenseful music)
Emilia, look! A second
set of footprints.
Well, they go up to the jungle
and they're going toward
the deceased's bungalow.
(waves crashing)
(Emilia sighs)
I really don't like the
idea of splitting up.
Well, I don't like the idea
of not finding Stanley.
All right, scream if
you're in trouble.
You too.
(gentle suspenseful music)
[Khalif] Ow! Ow!
-Ooh, sorry. Sorry.
-Ow!
I think you'll get
quite a headache.
I already do.
Khalif, tell me what happened.
We were driving the range.
Dex saw something in the
sand trap, something shiny.
He drove us over
here. We got out.
Next thing I remember, you
guys are helping me up.
(wind whooshing)
(suspenseful music)
Guys. Guys!
You're gonna wanna see this.
You be all right?
I'm okay. Go, go.
(Khalif groans)
(gentle dramatic music)
[Tom] That's what I
think it is, right?
Blood? Yeah.
But Khalif hasn't
got any blood on him.
There's more leading this way.
What do you wanna do?
Let's see where it takes us.
Janey help Khalif.
Tom, you ride with me.
Right.
(soft suspenseful
music) (waves crashing)
(suspenseful music)
(water burbling)
(object clicks)
(suspenseful music)
(object thuds)
(door creaks)
(suspenseful music continues)
(soft ominous music)
(object thuds)
(soft ominous music continues)
(Emilia gasps) (club thuds)
(man grunts and thuds)
(gentle dramatic music)
(gold carts rattling)
(suspenseful music)
It's getting heavier.
Which means it's a wound
that's not been taken care of.
Is it possible Dex attacked
you and you fought back?
I'm pretty sure
I'd remember that.
Let's follow it.
-(Khalif groans)
-No, no.
You should stay here.
Not a chance. I wanna this guy.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Tom, go to the top of the
tower, yell if you see anything.
Jason, this is the storyline
you were working
on two months ago.
I'm aware. That's not
good news for Dex.
You all right?
(groans)Thank you.
I'm so sorry.
No, no, it's my fault.
I shouldn't have-
I heard a noise.
You found Stanley.
Yeah, and I hit him.
Because I foolishly
crept up on her.
What are you doing here?
Well, I was getting
nowhere with the book,
so I thought I'd take
a walk, clear my head,
wound up here and thought
a soak in the hot tub
would be a good idea.
I, uh, realize this all
sounds a tad suspicious.
It does, yeah.
More than a tad.
How do we know you weren't
meeting your accomplice here?
Um, well, I suppose you don't.
Because somebody was
drinking a glass of wine.
Was that you?
It wasn't.
I didn't even enter the place
until I heard something.
I was tempted by the hot
tub, like I told you.
Emilia, did you
look in the bedroom?
Not yet.
Why don't we all go look?
Sure. (sighs)
(somber suspenseful music)
(Emilia gasps)
(suspenseful music)
(sighs) Looks like
someone's targeting members
of your team, Stanley.
(dramatic music)
Surely someone saw my notes
on "Murder at the Ruins."
That seems highly likely.
Well, then the killer
must be someone among us.
Janey.
(somber music)
Just remember who you can trust.
There's blood on the window!
Like a lot, a lot of blood!
(Janey exclaims)
[Janey] Dexter's hat.
I think whoever wounded Dex
threw him from the tower.
No one could survive that fall.
(somber music)
That's two dead.
So it would appear
that all the members
of the " Mystery Mountain"
team are potential targets.
Why? That makes no sense.
The second clue led us to
believe that Dex was the killer,
but that's been proven wrong.
Khalif, you remember nothing?
Not a thing.
Isn't it far more likely,
if there is an
inside man among us,
that the killer is
working with somebody
from the "Mystery Island" team?
-Excuse me!
-What?
Why?
Oh, just because you found,
uh, a bunch of
photos of you guys.
Yeah, that's exactly
what I'm saying.
Well, maybe those were put there
to throw suspicion
on one of you!
(all yelling)
None of us are thinking clearly.
I suggest we all go to our rooms
to rest and clear our heads.
Wise words, Emilia.
I prefer to go to my
original room on my own.
I think that's
best for all of us.
(somber music) (chairs scraping)
(gentle dramatic music)
(Emilia sighs)
It's not making sense.
(knuckles rapping)
Jason?
[Jason] How'd you guess?
You're not sleeping.
Neither are you. Despite
telling everyone we needed rest.
(door thuds)
I rested.
For what, 30 seconds?
It may have been 40.
I just, I-I can't stop thinking.
Oh, you wanna bounce
some stuff off me?
Yeah, that usually
works quite well.
It does indeed.
(Emilia sighs)
(quirky dramatic music)
So instead of thinking
about the evidence,
we should consider the
mind of the killer.
Good thing you're an expert.
You started to formulate
a profile of the killer?
That's what's off.
There's no consistency.
See, Regan's murder
shows extensive planning,
whereas Dex's is
simply opportunistic.
Regan's murder is bloodless,
whereas Dex's is
quite the opposite.
That makes the theory of
two killers pretty viable.
One being the muscle, the
other being the brains.
Possibly, but what if
the two-killer notion
is a deception to instill
fear and division among us?
What if there's simply
one killer who has access
to all the "Mystery
Mountain" files,
who understands psychology
and how to create fear,
and who knows enough
about profiling
to vary their methods of murder
in an effort to confuse us?
You're talking about Stanley.
(sighs) You had
the same thought?
Plus, I didn't buy his
reasons for wandering away
from you and Inga and Carlos.
Exactly, and not
just to the veranda,
but then to the jacuzzi?
So for that to be the
case, he would've had time
to leave his book at the
veranda, get to the golf course,
attack Khalif and Dex, drag
the wounded Dex to the tower,
throw him off and
still get back in time
to wash off any blood spatter.
Yeah. So how should we proceed?
I wanna talk to Stanley,
see how he reacts.
Alone or?
You coming down.
(dramatic music)
-Hang on.
-Yeah?
Maybe you should go in first.
He's more likely to let
you in if you're alone.
'Cause I'm some dumb cop,
and you're a brilliant
criminal profiler.
Well, I wouldn't
put it that way.
Stanley might.
Maybe.
And then once you've
had a chance to hit him
with some preliminary questions,
I'll knock on the door.
Are we working together?
No. We've each come
of our own volition.
I like it. Keep him off my eyes.
Precisely.
(knuckles rapping)
Jason Trent!
Stanley! (knuckles rapping)
(metal clanging)
(wind whooshing)
I think he's opening the window.
(door handle rattles)
(door thuds) (dramatic music)
Stanley!
-Don't move, Detective.
-Stanley, now come on.
[Stanley] I don't
wanna hurt you,
but you gotta listen to me.
[Jason] I'm listening.
[Stanley] Huh?
Are you listening?
I am listening, Stanley.
Somebody's trying to frame me.
-I am being framed!
-Okay!
And I will listen
to you, Stanley,
- if you put down-
- Do you believe me?
Do you understand me?
But you got to listen to me.
Somebody is trying to frame me.
I understand that.
Yeah? I want you to believe me.
- I understand- - Stanley!
(Stanley grunts and exclaims)
Now, let's make this official.
You are under arrest for
assaulting an officer.
Anything you say can and
will be used against you
in a court of law and you
have the right to an attorney.
If you cannot afford one,
one will be provided for you.
Do you understand these
rights as I've read them?
I know my Miranda rights
and I don't mind talking
because I'm telling you I
did not kill Regan or Dex.
And by Monday, when
your colleagues
from the police force arrive,
I promise you they'll agree.
Now, if you would
please uncuff me.
-Thank you.
-Don't thank me.
I'm locking you up.
Emilia, you gotta believe me.
I'm being framed! (exclaims)
(Stanley grunts)
(gentle suspenseful music)
(Emilia sighs)
(Stanley grunts and pants)
(dramatic music)
Storage room?
Well, for now it's
a holding cell.
Listen, you said I was under
arrest for assaulting you.
Does that mean you don't
think I killed them?
Stanley, you are
my prime suspect.
I might be adding murder
to your list of charges
when my colleagues
get here on Monday,
but for now, assaulting an
officer's more than enough
to hold you.
Well, can you please
uncuff me then?
I'll be back.
(door thuds)
(keypad beeping)
(lock buzzes)
(suspenseful music)
(Stanley sighs)
Hey.
You get Stanley secured?
I did. Yeah.
And he actually
pulled a knife on you?
I brought them all up to speed.
I never trusted Stanley.
Yeah. Yeah, me neither.
I thought it was Dex
you didn't trust?
Oh, well I didn't, but clearly
I was mistaken about Dex.
But no, I felt that Stanley
was extremely suspicious
with the whole, "I don't
know anything about the game"
"because I was called
away by the FBI," story.
Well, what's Stanley saying now?
Nothing yet. I wanted to
talk to you all first.
Best to go into an interview
with some ammunition.
Who knows anything about
Dr. Stanley Williams?
He's a criminal psychologist,
a university professor,
and he consults with the FBI.
He's well respected.
He also wrote a seminal
book on criminal profiling.
"Mind of a Killer."
Might turn out to be an
autobiographical title.
So you do think that he
murdered Regan and Dex?
I'm not sure yet, but he's
certainly my prime suspect.
I got a bad vibe
from him right away.
He kept saying that he
knew me from somewhere.
And you don't know him?
No.
I think we need to talk
to the surviving members
of the "Mystery Mountain" team.
(gentle dramatic music)
(waves sloshing)
(seagulls squawking)
Thank you for meeting with us.
Of course. Where's Stanley?
In custody.
I don't understand.
I went to talk to Stanley
and he assaulted me.
-What?
-With a knife.
Thanks to Emilia, I was able
to turn the tables on him.
I have him locked
in a secured room.
- Well, that's- - Shocking.
I had several discussions
with Stanley about
futility of violence.
Interesting.
What else can either of
you tell us about Stanley?
-Well.
-Well, has no children,
no family.
He's quite devoted to his work.
And he's writing on
a sequel to his book.
Yeah, that's what
I got from him too.
Although he didn't spend
the week here with us,
just came in the
day before you guys.
But I did get to talk to him
about his work
profiling killers.
What did he say?
He said that murder can
be quite energizing.
I mean, I thought he meant
talking to murderers.
Now I see how it could maybe be
like he was revealing something.
Thank you both.
I'm gonna go question Stanley.
-Won't you join me?
-Of course.
Might I suggest that the
rest of us remain here
and work out the third
riddle of Evelyn's?
It might yet prove helpful.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(keypad beeping)
(lock buzzes)
Oh, hello.
Did you fall over?
Just tried to get some sleep.
But the combination of
handcuffs and concrete
made it difficult.
I'll tell you what,
Stanley, if you promise
not to do anything stupid,
I'll let you loose.
I promise.
(Stanley grunts and groans)
Thank you.
(Stanley groans)
Have a seat.
May I ask?
We're asking the questions.
Understood.
Did you rig the device
that killed Regan?
I did not.
Did you attack Khalif
and murder Dex?
Certainly not.
But you don't have an
alibi for Dex's murder?
Oh yes, I'm painfully
aware of that.
But still, I didn't do it.
Honestly, I thought the two
of you were better at this,
which is why I'm shocked
you've been tricked
into thinking I'm the killer.
We never said you
were the killer.
Oh, good. So I can go then.
Sit down.
Why do you think
you're being framed?
Because I am.
Why would Khalif or
Inga wanna frame you?
I would assume so
they don't get caught.
But you're assuming
it's one of our team
and not one of your team.
We have plenty of
history with our team.
Not Tom Robinson, you don't.
You have no history
with him, but I do.
You said you thought
you knew him.
Yes, I suppose it took
being locked up in here
to bring it back to me.
It's been a couple years.
Tom wasn't quite as
fit, had shorter hair,
but he was a student
of mine at GW.
As you know, I was
an adjunct professor,
taught a couple
of classes there.
But I know why Tom pretended
not to remember me.
Why?
Because I turned him
in for plagiarism,
which led to his expulsion.
Did he confront you
about it at the time?
Only via email.
He said something to the effect
that I destroyed his life
and he was gonna
make me pay for that.
And now I'm afraid he may have
found a way to do just that.
(dramatic music)
(group chattering)
Yes, poor Dex.
Oh, Jason. Has
Stanley confessed?
Not yet. Do you mind
if I borrow Bennett?
Oh no, of course.
Bex? (gentle dramatic music)
How can I help?
This may seem like
a strange question,
but where did Tom go to college?
Uh, the University of
the Virgin Islands.
So not George
Washington University?
Oh no, he did in fact
begin his degree there.
Do you know why he transferred?
No idea. Is this somehow
pertinent to our situation?
It might be. Could you ask
him to come in here please?
Yes, of course.
I can't help but
bring up the fact
that this new
revelation from Stanley
is now dividing members
of our own team.
Fits your profile of
the killer. I get it.
Hey guys, what's up?
Tom, you started your undergrad
at George Washington University.
Wow, uh, not what I was
expecting, (chuckles)
But yeah, yeah, I
was at GW for a year.
-Why?
-Why did you leave?
Well, um, (scoffs) I met
a girl over spring break
and she was at the University
of the Virgin Islands.
I was just, just madly
in love with her,
so I transferred.
So you weren't expelled from GW?
No.
Was Stanley Williams one
of your professors there?
I don't believe this.
Is that guy accusing me?
Just answer the question.
Fine. The, the answer is no.
I didn't have Stanley
as a professor.
I didn't even know
he taught there.
I- I was a business major.
My specialty was in
hospitality management.
(scoffs) I never saw
that guy until yesterday,
I swear to you.
Okay.
Thank you.
Am I a suspect?
Everyone's a suspect
until they're not.
Okay.
Why don't you go and
head to the game room?
Sure.
(soft ominous music)
We have no way of knowing
which one of them is
telling the truth.
But the fact that
Stanley knew Tom
was at GW and left prematurely-
Is not a good look for Tom.
(suspenseful music)
-Janey, darling.
-Thank you.
Oh grand. Should we
report on our progress?
That would be great. Yeah.
Right.
According to Stanley, Regan
wrote AI Evelyn's scripts
and only she knew the
answer to the riddles.
But is this true?
Add to it, the killer certainly
intended Regan's murder
as a mockery to the
Telemachus solution
from riddle number one.
Right, so it makes sense
that Regan shared
the riddle solution
with the killer
who then killed her
because she found out
who the killer was.
(sighs) It sounds a bit
circular and logic, Janey.
But does it?
Or does it sound like the
kind of twisted thinking
a killer like Stanley
is capable of?
No, so why kill Dex?
I mean, perhaps he figured
out who the killer was,
but maybe the killer is planning
on killing everyone
on the island.
A serial killer, like the
ones that Stanley profiles.
Serial killers follow
patterns in their murders.
They don't vary their methods.
Except for Lonnie Alfred.
He's behind bars.
A copycat or someone
close to him?
Well, yes, like Stanley.
Okay.
Okay, um, what about
the third riddle then?
Um, "The evening sun is
hidden, shrouded in deception,
with discovery comes failure."
Well, yes, (sighs) the Cardano
grille, it didn't work.
And obviously there are
no number substitutions.
We thought about what
would hide the sun,
and went down the cloud route.
Deception would equal clouds.
And that didn't get us anywhere.
And I didn't find
any other traditional
code models being used.
Can I raise a question? What
if Stanley isn't the killer?
Or he's working
with an accomplice
who's still at
large on the island?
Yes. I do not relish the idea
of staying another night.
Even with locked bedroom doors.
I'd feel safer if we
were all together.
Might I suggest that
we all sleep in here
and then take shifts
keeping watch?
Yes. That's a great idea.
Jason, what do you think
of us all staying
the night in here,
and then taking
turns to keep watch?
-That's good thinking.
-Yeah.
Em, there's something
I need to show you.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
(suspenseful music)
Did you talk to Tom Robinson?
Sit down, Stanley.
We did. And he said he left
GW for different reasons.
Oh, well, then I'm sure
he is telling the truth
and I'm lying.
Speaking of not being truthful,
when were you
planning on telling us
that you'd been in contact
with Lonnie Alfred,
the London serial
killer I got to confess?
I would assume that's
a rhetorical question.
Letters from Lonnie
Alfred to you,
which Jason found in your room.
"What if I told you I
had a partner in my work?
We can only discuss in person.
Can you come to London?"
You told us you couldn't
write with Regan
because you were called away.
Called away by Lonnie Alfred?
Is Lonnie's partner
now your partner?
Are they on this island?
You found some letters.
You're leaping to a
lot of conclusions.
Fill in the blanks for us.
Hmm. I think I'm done talking.
(somber suspenseful music)
[Jason] Hey, you okay?
(sighs) I should
have told you sooner,
but ever since the
Lonnie Alfred case,
I- I-I feel like
I'm being followed.
Why didn't you tell me?
Aw, I thought I
was being paranoid.
I've been through this before.
You can always confide in me.
I know.
I- I didn't want
to raise any alarms
until I had some proof.
If it was someone
associated with Lonnie,
why would they go after Regan?
Unless Regan wasn't
the intended victim.
(suspenseful music)
(dart whooshes) (Regan exclaims)
-(dramatic music)
-Oh!
(screen whooshes)
Honey. You're allergic.
I was the target.
I hate to say it, but
it makes the most sense.
(gentle dramatic music)
I need to go and check on Janey.
(footsteps tapping)
Brought you a
pillow and blanket.
Oh, you're the best.
I know this probably
isn't the time,
but don't you think that
Khalif is rather handsome?
(chuckles) Not the time.
Okay, fair, but I don't
think it's just me
thinking about what
tonight could be,
if we weren't only worried
about a killer on the loose?
Like you and Jason, hm?
(gentle music)
(sighs) One day at a time.
I am so over that cliche.
Let me help you with that.
Thank you.
(gentle music)
Hm?
(waves sloshing)
Grounds are clear.
[Emilia] (sighs) It
is a beautiful sunset.
It's always bothered me.
The sunset?
No, uh, the fact that we
say the sun is setting
when really we're just
turning away from it.
Jason! You're a genius.
Well, it was Copernicus.
No! No, I mean the third riddle.
Of course, the three riddles
form a profile. (scoffs)
You've lost me.
The third riddle starts,
"The evening sun is hidden."
Well, why is the sun hidden?
Because the Earth
turns away from it.
Now I use the homophone, S-O-N,
and who's turning away from him?
Mother Earth.
Right, and the answer
to the first riddle
was a son, Telemachus.
Yeah, a, a prince with
no power. A scion.
And the answer to the second
riddle, the invisible man.
Someone nobody sees.
And now this son, whose
mother turns away from him.
Put it all together,
it's what I suspected.
John Murtaugh. (gentle
dramatic music)
(water sloshing) (gentle music)
I feel like I should say
something to Jason about it.
Well, should I go and
get him, or just wait?
I talked to him, I
didn't get anything.
Oh, good morning. I
didn't want to wake you.
-Is everything all right?
-Yeah, I just,
I realized something
this morning.
-About the third riddle?
-Which we know
is connected to John Murtaugh.
-Right.
-He's dead,
I know, but there's a
part of him that's not.
(suspenseful music)
John Murtaugh. Still a
presence, even from the grave.
What are we looking for?
I'm not sure exactly,
but I have a feeling this
was put here for a reason.
Agreed. It must be a clue.
"The sun is hidden."
Evelyn's son!
Is that hologram
lady coming back?
I didn't love her.
The third line of the poem
is "Shrouded in deception."
That's it. The beard.
The beard that John
Murtaugh was wearing
as a disguise when he
was shot with the arrow.
On the right side of his neck.
(screen whooshes)
(somber music)
This man is really
and truly dead.
(screen whooshes)
(stone scraping)
Whoa!
I didn't see that coming.
(suspenseful music)
Those look like
Stanley's glasses.
Jason.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Stay here.
(suspenseful music)
(Jason gasps)
(dramatic music)
Em!
Looks like blood splatter
And a bullet hole.
(sighs) He was in my custody.
Hey, don't go there.
This isn't your fault, but
we should tell the others.
(gentle dramatic music)
(gentle ominous music)
But so, if the killer
didn't break in-
The keypad is intact, which
means they knew the code.
So Stanley wasn't the killer?
Or he was the
inside man all along
and his partner killed him.
Which means that we undoubtedly
have a killer amongst us.
On my island.
Janey, could you take
everyone to the game room?
Jason and I will be
there in a minute
to come up with a plan.
Oh. (clears throat)
Everyone.
(soft suspenseful music)
What's going on?
(exclaims) Something's
bothering me.
(gentle dramatic music)
Why put Stanley's
glasses in there?
That's a really good question.
Evelyn's whole message
was built around the idea
of disappointment in her son.
What are you saying?
I think we should write down
everything that's happened
since we've arrived.
Not the puzzles, just
the plain simple facts.
(slow dramatic music)
(foreboding music)
It's quite clever.
No argument here.
(gasps) What are you doing?
-Janey.
-We've been looking for you.
- Sorry, we- - You
two being in here,
you were making yourselves
targets for the killer!
That's not true. Is it, Khalif?
What are you talking about?
It's a lot.
We should chat with
everyone at the same time.
Janey, could you gather
everyone on the veranda please?
Right.
(suspenseful music)
What is this all about?
We don't have time for
any more game play.
I agree. As of this moment,
the game playing is over.
Well, that's a rather
cryptic statement.
Cryptic and meta, which is
what our "Mystery Island"
team have been experiencing,
beginning with a
video of the mother
of "Mystery Island"'s founder,
delivering a very
cryptic message to us.
Which we solved last
night, and which-
Jason, forgive me,
but we all know this.
And it doesn't change the fact
that three people are dead
and there is still
a killer out there.
Three people dead, but yet
where are their bodies?
Well, the killer
took Regan's body
to draw us out of the
mansion that night.
Perhaps, but then there's
Dex thrown off a tower,
yet a body is
nowhere to be found.
Yes, the killer dragged it away.
Maybe, but then there's Stanley,
shot sometime last night.
His glasses were left behind,
but his body was taken?
Right, so three murders
and three missing bodies.
Evelyn's riddles pointed us
to this very meta solution.
The person who isn't what they
seem to be is John Murtaugh,
whose final act of his
lifetime was to stage a murder
that wasn't a murder.
(screen whooshes)
(trigger clicks) (dart
whizzes and thuds)
(suspenseful music)
(screen whooshes)
We should have known this was
a mockery of John Murtaugh
as soon as Regan was shot
with a remote-controlled dart.
Ah, h-hang on.
Are you saying that the
three people aren't dead?
Because I mean, we
all saw Regan die.
You checked her pulse yourself.
Or she faked her convulsions
and her lack of pulse was due
to her so-called
anxiety medication.
(gentle dramatic music)
A beta blocker would slow
her heart down enough
that her pulse wouldn't
be felt with a hand.
(screen whooshes)
Khalif, you were the
last one to join us
out here after the explosion.
(screen whooshes)
(suspenseful music)
[Emilia] Were you giving
Regan a shot of epinephrine
to revive her, enabling her to
simply walk out of the house?
-(Regan gasping)
-Shh, shh, shh, shh.
Come on, come with me.
You're okay, you're
okay. That's it.
(screen whooshes)
Khalif, is this true?
(suspenseful music)
I'd like to hear what
else they have to say.
(gentle dramatic music)
Remember, Regan's death
wasn't the first thing
that went wrong that night.
First was the revelation
of Inga's so-called
criminal history.
Inga and Dex's quick
exit gave them time
to put explosives onto
the Bluetooth terminal,
which could have been
triggered by the same remote
that triggered the dart
gun, which shot Regan.
Telemachus roughly
translates to Archer,
but it actually
means far from battle
because an archer can
kill from a distance.
[Jason] He could have
hidden it behind a book
before he insisted
we frisk everyone.
Then Dex, along with a
very much alive Regan,
and Khalif, staged his
death at the ruins.
(dramatic music)
He wore this hat not
only to irritate Janey,
but so there would be a
recognizable clothing item
to draw everyone's attention.
What about Stanley?
Stanley becomes
crucial at this point.
Everything he said and did
was designed to make
him our prime suspect.
[Emilia] He pulled
a knife on Jason
to ensure he'd get locked up.
Making Inga so
scared to be here,
we all had to stay
in one room together.
Which gave Dex, Regan,
and Stanley plenty of time
to stage Stanley's murder.
Queue us with the replica
glasses in the hidden box,
and dispatch one final
insult to John Murtaugh.
A rather brilliant callback
to the original murder
of "Mystery Island."
And a very meta game
for us all to play.
Three murders that,
like Murtaugh's,
weren't murders at all.
(group applauding)
(group chuckling)
Well done!
Bravo. Bravo!
Well done, you two.
I bet Regan you wouldn't
be able to solve it.
And I'm happy to say you
owe me a nice big check.
(Dex chuckles)
Please forgive my
bit of deception
about your academic record, Tom.
No worries, man.
This was awesome.
And Emilia, my apologies
for bringing Lonnie
Alfred into this.
I hope I didn't cause
you any undue stress.
I respect your work immensely.
-Thank you.
-Detective,
I do hope you'll consider
dropping the charges.
We're good.
But I do have one more
thing to say to Dex.
Oh yeah. What's that?
Thanks for letting me
play the bad guy for once.
(both laugh)
Hats off to you,
Stanley. You're a legend.
Ah.
And Carlos, did we
meet the gold standard
set by the "Mystery
Island" team?
I am completely blown away.
And Janey.
Yes, I must admit I
am also blown away.
Well, I learned from
studying the best.
You are incredible at this.
I was just trying to keep up.
Well, I was worried that
you would outshine us,
and I think that you might have.
Nonsense. I'm honored
to have you as a mentor.
Oh, so I'm your boss?
(Dex laughs)
No, no, I think, I think
that's about right.
(chuckles) No, I think
that we can all agree
that "Mystery Mountain"
is in very good hands.
-I second that.
-Third.
To the first of many.
Hear, hear. (group applauding)
Well then, (sighs) should
we head to the dining room
for a victory lunch?
Is anyone else starving?
Oh yes, I'll say. (chuckles)
I think we should get
that wonderful ice cream
that we got from Los Angeles.
(uplifting music)
Not hungry?
Famished.
-But?
-But I've been wanting
to do something for
a really long time.
What?
(birds chirping)
(gentle romantic music)
Almost better than
solving any game.
Agreed.
I think the best game will be
trying to solve
the mystery of you.
(gentle triumphant music)
Finally.
(bright upbeat music)
(Emilia and Jason chuckle)
(gentle uplifting music)
(upbeat music)
(gentle uplifting music)
(logo whooshing)
(gentle dramatic music)
(logo dings)
(dramatic music)
(wind whooshing)
(suspenseful music)
(Emilia panting)
(Emilia gasps)
(gentle dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
[Jason] And now you
have nowhere else to go.
(Emilia gasps and screams)
(dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
If it's a push
rather than a jump,
the body would be
further from the tower.
Also.
The killer forgot to
retrace their steps,
leaving room for a trail.
(gentle bright music)
[Jason] Genius.
Ah! I'm excited to do
a murder at the ruins.
You know, expand to other
areas of the island.
Oh, "Blood on the Rocks."
I have a better idea.
What about "Blood
on the Rockies"?
What do you mean?
Imagine: murder in the snow.
Snow on "Mystery Island"?
May I introduce you
to "Mystery Mountain"?
So, as we all know,
there has been the occasional
actual murder here.
There's also been 45 games
where no one was harmed.
Yeah, and my book
is nearly finished,
which will provide greater
context to the actual murders.
No, no, no, no, you
misunderstand me.
The actual murders have
increased the desire
to come to "Mystery Island."
We are currently booked
up 13 months ahead.
So I pitched to Carlos
an expansion idea,
and we came up with
"Mystery Mountain."
He's just bought the
property in Montana.
I didn't think Carlos was open
to anything off the island.
Oh yes, it did take
a bit of convincing,
but that's why I'm here,
to think about the future
of "Mystery Island."
And with this new property,
we can start the expansion.
That's great, but I'm not sure
him and I can handle writing
games for both properties.
Ah, no worries there.
Carlos is hard at work
vetting the new staff.
Ooh, and when he's
done, he's bringing
the "Mystery
Mountain" team here.
Oh, fun. So then they'll
play one of our games?
Oh, contrarian. We're
going to play their game.
(gentle dramatic
music) (Janey exclaims)
(gentle spirited music)
(gentle music)
(rain pattering)
To new beginnings.
(wind whooshing)
(sighs) It's a bit scary
to be without the
job that defined me.
How was it, saying
goodbye to London?
Well, with the weather,
I feel like I've
brought London here.
(Jason chuckles) (Emilia scoffs)
You sure this is what you want?
You know I love my work.
-And you're great at it.
-Thank you.
But I've been thinking
about this for a while,
so I was looking for a sign
the past couple of months
as to whether I
should stay in London
or move here and make "Mystery
Island" my full-time work.
Did that sign look
anything like this?
(chuckles) I won't
deny that's part of it.
But also, have you heard
about the Lonnie Alfred case?
Lonnie Alfred, the psychiatrist
that killed seven people?
Well, I couldn't
tell you at the time,
but I was the one who
got him to confess.
Wow, that's amazing.
Yeah, he threatened to do to me
what he did to
his seven victims.
And he's not the first person
to make that kind of threat,
but I decided he was
gonna be the last.
I fear he has connections
on the other side.
You're safe here.
Hi. My body yearns
And the words you serve
But come to mind it hurts
Around that corner is my
favorite seafood place.
Rosa makes the best ceviche.
(chuckles) I'm so lucky
to have a friend that,
wait, you know,
someone who can show me
around my new neighborhood.
Lemme show you my
favorite street, Em.
Look, Em, I don't
think it's any secret
that I like you, and.
Yeah.
I'm just really looking forward
to spending more time
with you outside of work.
Me too.
(Emilia gasps)
(soft suspenseful music)
Um, sorry, I-I
thought I saw someone.
I- I think I'm just
exhausted. Jet lag, and.
Let's get you home.
I think we both need
a good night's sleep
if we're gonna be on
our A game tomorrow.
-Jason.
-I know, it's complicated
with us working together.
Let's just take it
one day at a time.
(gentle music)
(gentle upbeat music)
Hey, you.
Hey, yourself.
Did you get some sleep?
A bit. (chuckles)
I see they've already
upgraded the boat.
Ooh, I wonder if Janey
knows about that.
[Bennett] Well, hello, you two.
Bennett, how are you?
Oh, a bit discombobulated
to be honest.
You know this is the first time
since joining "Mystery Island"
that I have been off-island
for the entire week?
Oh, here's my new
assistant, Tom Robinson.
[Tom] Ms. Bennett!
Please meet Detective
Trent and Dr. Priestly.
Oh wow! The brains
behind the game.
It is an honor to meet you both.
You too.
Oh, Miss Teri,
okay. Miss Teri, hm.
Oh, like mystery!
Oh, oh, I-I get it.
-Jason!
-Carlos.
Emilia! So excited to
play a game with you.
And Ms. Bennett. Pleasure to
finally meet you in person.
And you.
Welcome to the "Mystery
Island" family, Tom.
Thank you, sir, I
am very excited.
I'm very, very excited.
Thank you. Okay.
That's different. A new boat.
Oh, "Mystery Island"
has set a high bar.
Hope "Mystery
Mountain" can meet it.
I have every
confidence they can.
(gentle triumphant music)
(gentle music)
Oh, it is good to be back.
What do you say, you
and I solve this mystery
in record-breaking time?
Exactly what I was thinking.
And then we can
celebrate on the mainland
with another dinner date.
Sounds perfect.
(chuckles) Thank you.
I'll see you Monday.
(gentle upbeat music)
[Jason] Mind telling us
who our counterparts are?
[Carlos] Their team leader,
Janey's opposite number,
is Dex Longstreth.
[Emilia] That entitled
frustrating human from Oxford?
[Carlos] Maybe back then, but
he has an impressive resume
and has put together
a crackerjack team.
Dex Longstreth, heir to the
Longstreth Luxury Hotel brand,
hospitality and leadership
is in his blood,
but he's trying to make his
own mark in the industry.
Regan Morris, a police
detective with the Chicago PD.
She's one of the game writers.
Dr. Stanley Williams, acclaimed
criminal psychiatrist,
who's helped the FBI
catch dozens of killers.
Inga Sorenson, "Mystery
Mountain"'s own majordomo,
who we were able to hire
away from a Swedish mogul.
And her head of
security, Khalif Brooks.
Ex-Army Special Forces medic.
(soft upbeat music)
I dare say we're ready.
Remember the keys to success:
attention to detail, conviction,
and never forget
to make work play.
(birds chirping)
Carlos!
Dex! (chuckles)
(Dex chuckles and groans)
Emilia, darling!
Lovely to see you, Dex.
Mm, (lips smacking) mwah.
Janey! It's been far too long.
I was going to
suggest the opposite.
Oh! Good, you haven't
lost your bite.
Didn't know we were going
to a "Great Gatsby"
costume party.
Thank you for the compliment.
It's one of my favorite novels.
Of course it is.
You must be Jason Trent!
That's what it says
on my passport.
It says Dexter Crispin
Neville Drummond Longstreth
on mine.
Oh, that must be fun
for the customs people.
(Dex laughs)
Bennett, welcome, and thank you
for letting us
invade your domain.
Oh, (chuckles) I didn't
really have a choice,
Mr. Longstreth.
(chuckles) And you're the
newly-hired Tom Robinson.
Yes, I am.
(laughs) Welcome all!
Wardrobe's a bit much, no?
(gentle upbeat music)
(gentle suspenseful music)
No, wait! What are you
doing with our staff?
Just bringing a little
added realism to our game.
So no fancy meals, no
housekeepers putting mints
on your pillows.
What? (scoffs) Well, that's-
A bold choice. I like it.
Now we'll all convene
on the veranda
for cocktails for our
crystal-themed night.
But first we'll have
a glass of champagne
and then you'll be shown to
your rooms by your counterparts.
Carlos, you'll come
with Janey and me.
(gentle upbeat music)
Pleasure, Dr. Priestly.
Call me Emilia,
please, Dr. Williams.
Only if you'll call me Stanley.
(Emilia chuckles)
(gentle bright music)
(birds chirping)
(Emilia chuckles) (group
softly chattering)
Yeah, wow, I can see
you're really leaning
into the mountain theme.
Ah.
Oh, John Murtaugh.
Dex felt the founder should
be in a place of primacy.
Oh, I wonder if
Dex didn't realize
that the founder tried to
frame Carlos for murder.
(suspenseful music)
(screen whooshes)
(trigger clicks) (dart
whizzes and thuds)
(suspenseful music)
I've never seen that before.
Mr. Del Fuego, you
need to come with us.
-(screen whooshes)
-Well, hello.
Dex, really?
I mean, this is a bit
gauche, even for you.
On the other hand, it
is good to be reminded
of the dangers of hubris.
Well, that's just what I
thought, Carlos. Shall we?
(soft gentle bright music)
So this is your room.
Thank you.
I, uh, I must confess, it
does feel quite strange
being a guest in
one of these rooms.
Whoa! (gasps)
This is sweet.
Here we are.
(gentle music)
Oh, (chuckles) I love
all the little touches.
(Stanley chuckles)
This is amazing.
Oh, so glad you like it.
Here you are, Janey.
Yes, though I do prefer
the east-side suites.
Oh well, perhaps this side
will give you a new perspective?
[Janey] Hm.
Don't hesitate to
ask me for anything.
I'm here to make your stay
as comfortable as possible.
Oh, thank you.
This is, uh, way out of my
comfort zone. (chuckles)
You're in good hands, I
have a lot of experience,
though not as much as you do.
Your reputation proceeds you.
Well, thank you.
That's very generous.
Just enjoy being
a guest for once,
and I hope you enjoy
playing the game later.
Well, I have to admit,
I'm very excited
about that. (chuckles)
Great. So get some rest and
we'll see you for cocktails.
Oh, Ms. Sorenson,
just one last thing.
Your previous
employer, the mogul?
(Inga sighs)
Anything I should know?
I believe in moving
forward, not backwards.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(gentle dramatic music)
(Bennett laughs)
[Khalif] You haven't
actually been on the island,
is that right?
Yeah, yeah, I-I've seen photos,
but I mean this,
this is another deal.
You know, best first
week on the job ever.
Well, just remember
to stay alert.
Anything can be a clue.
Wait. (gentle suspenseful music)
Has the game already started?
I'm just saying you
should always be aware.
Hey, can you gimme a clue?
Yeah, I don't wanna embarrass
myself in front of this group.
Yeah, they're my new
bosses. (sniffles)
Also, I could use the help.
So you're playing
the innocent new guy?
I can respect that.
(gentle dramatic music)
-(door clicks and thuds)
-I am.
I am looking
forward to your team
playing the "Mystery
Mountain" teams game.
Well, technically we
are just one team.
(Dex chuckles)
But if you ever need any
pointers, tips, ideas,
I am more than willing to help.
(chuckles) That's
quite all right.
Oh no, seriously Dex,
I have been doing this
a lot longer than you.
I do know what makes
these games successful.
Oh, I have no doubt that you do,
but you are here
to play our game.
Janey, do try to
relax and enjoy.
(Janey scoffs)
Who knows, maybe you'll
pick up some pointers.
Yes, as would you.
For starters not putting
the COO of "Mystery Island"
in one of the smaller suites.
[Regan] So you're
still on the job?
[Jason] I am. I was
told you are too.
I was, but things changed.
Put my papers in a
couple of weeks ago.
Mind if I ask why?
I was ready for a change.
And I thought this would
be the perfect opportunity
to use my skills,
but not have to deal
with the real crimes
and bureaucracy.
Plus the money they'll
pay. (Jason scoffs)
I'm not sure why you haven't
retired from the force.
I guess I still love
catching bad guys.
It never gets sold, does it?
It does not.
I already miss that part of it.
Here's your room, Detective.
Well, I'll leave you to it then.
I-I just wanted
to say, (chuckles)
I'm familiar with your work
and it's really impressive.
Oh! Well, thank you, Emilia.
I'd say the same of you.
Y-you know of my work?
Oh yes. I have
contacts in London.
I understand you were the one
who got Lonnie
Alfred to confess?
I was, yeah.
Impressive.
But now you've left the
Metropolitan Police?
It was time to leave,
and to stop being
threatened by murderers.
Ah!
(soft slow bright music)
(group softly chattering)
Khalif, shut up.
You know about the spirit?
-Yeah, I might.
-Yeah.
(group continues
softly chattering)
(soft slow bright
music continues)
You all right?
Look at him. Sucking
up to Carlos.
(sighs) I have to say,
Dex has assembled
an impressive team.
You already have
an impressive team.
Everything good here?
Ah, Janey's having second
thoughts about the expansion.
It was your idea. You
convinced Carlos to do it.
Yes, I want the expansion.
I just, just don't
want to be replaced.
-Impossible.
-Never.
Swell.
They are impressive, but let's
not get lulled into trusting
any one of these people.
We need to view
them as the enemy
if we are to solve their
game and possibly quickly,
and show Carlos who the
true mystery masters are.
Hm! (glass clinking)
So if I can ask you all to
employ your imaginations
and envision a snow-covered
peak above the mansion,
I can then welcome you
all to "Mystery Mountain."
(group exclaims and applauds)
-All right.
-Wow!
Now we are taking
a different tack
to "Mystery Island" with
its quaint golden age
of detective fiction
lack of technology.
Here on "Mystery Mountain,"
we embrace innovation.
While "Mystery Island" has
no cell service or WiFi,
we have this past week installed
a temporary Bluetooth network.
The phones Inga and
Khalif are handing out
will be a crucial part
of playing the game.
Oh, this is so cool.
Uh, mine's just a blank
screen at the moment.
Correct, when it comes online,
that will signal the
start of the game.
Delightful. (chuckles)
[Dex] Cheers.
-Cheers.
-Cheers.
[Jason] Cheers.
It is clever.
Em, what did I just say?
Do not get lulled by
gimmicks. Stay sharp.
(gentle dramatic music)
(group softly chattering)
(opera vocalist singing
in foreign language)
(group laughing)
Sorry, Tom, have we met?
Oh, I don't think so.
Huh, I'm usually
quite good with faces,
and I swear we've met before.
People say that to
me all the time.
Much just have one of
those faces, you know?
So Dex, tell me about the
process of assembling this team.
Uh, well, Carlos gets
most of the credit.
He's pulled together
an impressive group.
Given the success
of "Mystery Island,"
it made sense to
keep the same formula
and to find the best,
most qualified people
in their individual fields.
Our first call was to Stanley.
His renown as a criminal
psychologist is well-known.
That's the nicest thing
he's said about me all week.
(group laughs)
He's still learning
to work with others.
But uh, we were
looking for someone
with a similar skillset to you,
as that's worked so effectively
here on "Mystery Island."
-Mm.
-And I suggested
we bring on a cop,
because I know the pairing
has worked so well here.
I may have been the
next person they hired,
but I wasn't the first
cop they approached.
-I was 12th.
-That's not true.
Is it Dex?
(suspenseful music) (Dex gasps)
How could you know that?
I'm a detective. It's my
job to find things out.
Like the fact that Inga
has a criminal record.
(ominous music)
(Dex gasping) (group murmuring)
Clearly absurd.
Impossible. We vetted everyone.
Your vetting process failed.
Do you wanna tell
them what you did?
How dare you?
She was convicted
of manslaughter.
Killed her husband back when
her name was Sophie Nidason.
She did three years
in a prison in Germany
and paid a lot of money
to buy a new identity.
(slow suspenseful music)
Inga!
(gentle suspenseful music)
We begin with a killer among us.
Dex?
I'll go and speak with Inga
and get to the bottom of this.
(suspenseful music)
Don't worry, it's just
anxiety medication.
I take it daily
whether I'm accusing
my colleagues of
manslaughter or not.
-Hm!
-And are there
any other criminals on your
team we should know about?
No. Everyone else checked out.
Dex really didn't seem
to know about Inga.
Agreed. It's concerning.
(phones chiming)
-Oh, it's a letter.
-A!
-G!
-M for me.
Ooh, I have an M too.
I-I got an E.
I bet you it's an anagram!
-(laughs) Oh, right!
-G.
(group chattering and chuckling)
-What about that?
-Wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait, wait.
- If you do- - No.
-That here.
-Oh, yes.
-Oh, oh!
-Oh!
[Bennett] Game room. We
need to go to the game room.
[Tom] All right! Okay, let's go.
[Janey] All right, don't
forget your notebooks.
(wind rumbling)
What now?
-(lightning crashes)
-Oh!
I don't remember seeing
thunder in the forecast.
If Dex were here, he'd tell
you that on "Mystery Mountain"
weather will often be a factor,
so we thought we'd provide some!
Oh! (chuckles) I must
admit, it is quite clever.
(gong bangs)
Oh, this is good
fun. (phones chiming)
Oh, my phone is saying an R.
-I have a D.
-Oh, I've got an I.
I bet you it's gonna
spell riddle. Right?
So are we trying to
find two riddles?
Oh, might I suggest that
we mirror the screen?
Mirror? Oh, you mean line up?
-Yes, precisely, Tom.
-Oh! Yes!
(gentle suspenseful
music) (thunder rumbling)
(screen chime) (group laughs)
Nice! There we go.
Well done, Bennett.
(phones dinging)
Oh, do you have a keypad?
I'll try and type it in. Steak.
-Hm.
-Oh.
Uh, ooh, lemme try the
homophone, S-T-A-K-E.
How about W-E double
I space D-O-N-E?
(screen chimes) (hands clapping)
-(group exclaims and laughs)
-Clever!
(group applauding)
[Woman] Good evening.
Outside! Outside.
Yes, go, go, go, go!
-It's started!
-Oh!
Good evening. (gentle
suspenseful music)
Good evening, I'm
Evelyn Murtaugh.
Welcome to my home.
Looks just like Evelyn.
And sounds like her.
A hologram. Impressive.
It's uncanny.
That's next level AI.
"The waves were dead."
The tides were in their grave.
The moon, their mistress
had expired before.
The winds were withered
in the stagnant air.
The clouds perished.
Darkness had no need
of aid from them.
"She was the universe."
Yeah, I know that poem.
It's, it's "Darkness" by Byron.
Someone on this island is
not who they seem to be.
And their aim is foul play.
I will graciously provide
you with three riddles
to help you discover
the imposter.
The first riddle.
Tell yourself that all mysteries
are not difficult to illuminate
with the proper method.
First, find the
ember of curiosity
that burns like an ache
in the heart of everyone.
The second riddle.
No one ate while
the scion waited.
Far too confused to
follow his mother's words
for his own good.
The third riddle.
The evening sun is hidden
shrouded in deception.
With discovery comes failure.
Now to work, my
sleuthing friends.
(Janey, Emilia and Bennett gasp)
Like I said. (Janey
and Emilia gasp)
Embracing technology.
Where did you sneak in from?
During Mrs. Murtaugh's speech.
That certainly was a
lot of information.
Can we replay it? I may
have missed a line or four.
Spectacular opening, Dex!
Thank you, Carlos.
And I'd like to assure you all
that Inga's manslaughter
charge was for losing control
of her car while on black ice,
which sadly resulted
in her husband's death.
I would've told you that
if you hadn't rushed
out of the room.
My sincere apologies
for the interruption.
No problem, Dex.
So, team, where should we start?
Why don't we begin
where Evelyn did?
With Lord Byron's
poem "Darkness"?
In the library.
(Emilia chuckles)
(gentle dramatic music)
(group chattering)
"Byron's Complete Poems."
-You got it?
-Yes! Okay.
-(metal clatters)
-Oh!
This must be related somehow.
(gasps) That is
a Cardano grille.
Which is what?
A cipher device from
the 16th century.
When placed over a
piece of writing,
it can reveal a secret
message underneath.
Wow, impressive
knowledge, Bennett.
Well, you know, I'm
partial to a puzzle.
Well, let, let, let's,
let's put it over
the "Darkness" poem.
Oh yeah. Okay, oh!
Here you go.
Thanks, Stanley.
Okay. Uh, "Darkness," page 89.
Ah! It appears to be saying.
Oh, nothing.
Oh, uh, ah! Try rotating it.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Still nothing.
-(Janey sighs)
-Maybe the, um,
uh, the grille thing
i-is supposed to be
put over something else.
Like Evelyn's first riddle?
-Right!
-Oh, okay.
I have it written down, but
my spacing is arbitrary.
Oh, we should put it
into iambic pentameter.
Why that?
Because that's what Byron
used for "Darkness."
Oh! Hm!
-Can I borrow this?
-Yeah.
You should mirror the font size
and, and write the riddle,
uh, in between the lines.
Okay, tell yourself that all
mysteries are not difficult
to illuminate with
the proper method.
In the heart of everyone of us.
Okay!
(gentle suspenseful music)
(Emilia gasps)
Tell em ach us.
Tell em ach us.
Tell em ach us.
Tell em. (gasps)
-Telemachus!
-Telemachus!
Em, we're brilliant!
Oh, so maybe the imposter is
Greek, or, or, or a prince.
Oh! Um, an archer!
Hold on.
Forgive me, I didn't go to
Oxford and minor in the classics.
-(Janey clears throat)
-Right, yeah, sorry.
Um, have you heard of Odysseus?
-Trojan Horse guy, right?
-Right.
So Telemachus was the son
of King Odysseus and Queen-
-Penelope.
-Penelope.
Okay. And the archer?
Well, Telemachus roughly
translates to archer.
But it actually means
far from battle,
because an archer can
kill from a distance.
-You're so good at this.
-Absolutely.
(Emilia laughs)
(dart whooshes) (Regan exclaims)
-(dramatic music)
-Oh!
(Regan gasps)
[Regan] (groans) What was that?
Are you okay?
Yeah, I'm okay.
Where did that come from?
(suspenseful music)
So it seems to have a
remote control trigger.
Oh, (chuckles) okay, okay.
We need to search the
"Mystery Mountain" team
for remote controls.
Dex, what was that move?
You knew about the dart.
Janey, hang on. This
isn't part of our game.
You expect me to believe that
after the Telemachus clue?
Well, I wrote most of this game
and I definitely didn't
write me being shot.
Maybe it was an old device
that just happened to go off.
I am sorry, but this is
an absurd coincidence.
I mean, Carlos, they are
obviously trying to thwart us
because we are getting close
to solving their game, man!
-Right.
-Already!
Yeah! (group laughing)
(group exclaims)
(dramatic music)
[All] Oh!
[Khalif] Step back. Step back.
Come on. Come on!
Carlos, this is not
part of the game.
Khalif, stop. Khalif, stop!
(Khalif gasps)
(somber music)
She's dead.
Oh! (sighs)
What the heck, what?
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Poison?
Well, we'll run forensics on it,
but it's coated with honey.
(somber music)
Well, her convulsions did look
like an anaphylactic shock.
I know it well, that's why I
never travel without an EpiPen.
She could be deathly allergic.
She is. It was part of
her medical profile.
This is madness.
Regan was targeted.
We do need to frisk
everybody for a remote.
Dex is right.
Empty your pockets.
(somber music)
Okay.
(group groaning)
[Tom] Everything now.
Well, that's a relief, I guess.
A relief? Someone's dead.
I thought this was just a game?
(scoffs) It was supposed to be.
The remote could have been
triggered from some distance.
Who else knew about
Regan's medical history?
It was on the "Mystery
Island" server,
so any one of us
or any one of you.
And anyone who could've
hacked the server. Right?
I need to call Ray.
He's the chief of
police on the mainland.
(somber suspenseful music)
(foot thuds)
There's an issue
with the phone line.
Nothing.
(explosion crashes)
That didn't sound like
your thunder machine.
It wasn't.
(suspenseful music)
What on Earth?
Dex, please tell
me you have backup.
Someone cut the landline
and disabled your
Bluetooth network.
I think we should
probably leave the island.
Boat won't be back till Monday.
Please tell me we
have another boat.
We do, but the staff took
it back to the mainland
when Dex dismissed
them for added realism.
Well, it sounded like a
lovely idea at the time.
We can no longer
trust your ideas.
So we're stuck here.
That's terrifying.
It certainly is.
We can take measures
to ensure everyone's safety,
but first I need to
secure the crime scene.
All of us!
(gentle dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
(group whispering)
-How is this possible?
-It's not possible.
-How?
-We were gone
for maybe 10 minutes.
Whoever took the body
couldn't have gotten far.
I need to search the mansion.
Jason.
It's fine, Em.
I'll clear the game room first,
you can all wait in there.
(suspenseful music)
(group whispering)
(thunder rumbling)
Not the night we expected.
Certainly not.
This is all my fault.
No, Dex, don't blame yourself.
But I'm in charge, Janey, the
responsibility falls to me.
I won't argue with that.
No sign of Regan's
body or a killer.
Should we search the
surrounding jungle?
Well, we need to ask ourselves,
why would the killer wanna
take her body outta here?
Uh, to draw us away from
the mansion and safety.
In addition, the killer
could be relying on
or taking advantage of the fact
that we're all exhausted,
physically and emotionally.
Stanley's right. We
should all get some rest.
Start fresh in the morning.
Oh, I concur.
I don't think anyone should
be on their own tonight,
so bunkmates are
Carlos and Khalif,
Dex and Tom, Bennett and
Inga, Janey and Emilia.
Stanley, you can go with Carlos.
I don't need a bunkmate.
What about you?
I'll keep watch.
I want everyone to lock your
windows and bolt your doors.
Stay safe, Tom.
You too.
Apologies for encroaching
on your space.
Oh, no, no, no. Not at all.
To be honest, I am
more than relieved
to have a roommate this evening.
Truthfully? Me as well.
(wind rumbling)
Well, I think it's no
secret that I wanted
to take the shine off Dex.
This is hardly how I had
hoped it would happen.
We know, Janey.
(Janey sighs)
Tell me it's gonna
be all right, Jason?
We're gonna be all right.
Are you just saying that
because I told you to?
Well, technically yeah,
but I'm gonna make
sure it's true.
Thank you.
Are you gonna make
sure you're all right?
Always.
(sighs) Please be careful.
I will be.
Do you promise?
I promise.
Okay.
-Night.
-Night.
(wind whooshing)
(somber music)
Em! Em, are you awake?
I am.
Well, are you trying to sleep?
I was.
Well, I was too, truly.
It's just, well, it's
my mind, it's racing.
Would you like me to teach
you a deep breathing exercise?
No, I-(sighs) I don't
think I want to sleep.
Janey!
(Emilia sighs)
What is it?
I don't want to start
building a murder board,
but I just can't help wondering
what motive somebody would
have for killing Regan.
Well, I would imagine she's
put several criminals away.
So this may be for revenge,
which hits a little
close to home.
But then why wouldn't they
allow us to leave the island?
I mean, if Regan
was the only target?
An excellent question. (sighs)
I think we should assume
that whomever did this
planned well in advance
and is far from finished.
(Janey sighs)
Right.
You'll show me this
breathing exercise then?
(Emilia sighs)
(insects chirping)
(gentle suspenseful music)
(flames crackling)
(suspenseful music)
(branches rustling)
Police! Come out from behind
the tree with your hands up!
(suspenseful music)
(insects chirping)
(Khalif sighs)
Khalif?
I wanted to take a quick
sweep of the grounds.
I'm sorry I scared you.
I want you to head back
inside and get some rest.
(insects chirping)
(somber music)
(Jason sighs)
(knuckles rapping)
It's Jason.
(Emilia sighing)
-Morning.
-Certainly is.
Did you not sleep?
-I didn't.
-Oh, Jason.
I just kept watch, did
a few perimeter walks.
I figured if anyone
was out there,
they'd wait till we were
asleep to make a move.
And did they?
All quiet.
Oh, so you're thinking
we should search
the rest of the island?
You read my mind.
(Emilia chuckles)
Oh good, (sighs)
The three of us made
it through the night.
Well, should we go
check on the others?
I'll get myself together.
Meet you down there.
Okay. Ready?
Ready.
(group softly chattering)
Oh, Ms. Sorenson,
what a lovely spread.
Thank you.
All right, everyone.
(sighs) The island is not
that big to begin with,
so whoever killed
Regan and took her body
couldn't have gotten far,
especially in the dark.
Jason, just a thought, if I may?
Is it possible the killer
hid or even buried her body
somewhere close by, maybe in
a hole they'd already dug,
and then moved further afield?
-Excellent thought.
-Thank you, Janey.
Agreed, I'm thinking
we work in teams,
operate on a search grid.
I simply can't chalk
it up to coincidence
that just as we solved
the Telemachus riddle,
Regan gets shot with an arrow.
Technically it was a dart.
Yeah, but my point is,
whomever set the device
that killed Regan not only knew
about her medical condition,
they knew about the
game you've written.
So there has to be a connection
between Regan and the killer.
Correct, so if the
killer has further plans,
it wouldn't be
unreasonable to think
those plans might be tied to
the rest of the game narrative.
So wait, you want us to
continue playing the game?
Okay, but maybe less
thunder this time?
Stanley, can you
share what was next?
I was afraid you were
gonna ask me this,
and unfortunately,
just as Regan and I
came up with the Evelyn idea,
I was called away by the FBI.
Are you saying you
don't know the solution
to the other two riddles?
I'm saying I don't actually know
the entire rest
of the narrative.
(Janey scoffs)
Dex told me he would
help Regan in my absence.
Dex?
Well, I-I did say that, but-
But what, Dex?
Regan said she could handle it.
She said that she would
reveal it to us all
after you'd solved
the first riddle.
[Emilia] Are you saying?
Nobody knows the
ending of the game?
(suspenseful music)
(slow dramatic music)
Okay, to clarify.
Only one person on your
team knew the answers
to the remaining riddles?
Well, I guess I
have a thing or two
to learn about the job.
All right, so then I suggest
that Stanley and I work on
figuring out the riddles,
and the rest of you
conduct the search.
You don't agree?
No, I, uh, I think you're
right about the riddles.
Jason doesn't like the idea
of leaving you here with me,
because Jason has quite
reasonably concluded
that while none of us could
have moved Regan's body,
there was always the possibility
of two culprits
working together.
One out there somewhere,
and the other right
here at this table
from the "Mystery
Mountain" team.
Yes, Detective?
That's right.
Oh come now, Stanley.
Our team was vetted.
Yeah well, we all know
how well that turned out.
I concur with Stanley,
that the "Mystery Island" team
has a reason to mistrust us.
Well, who, who is it
that you mistrust?
Inga, Khalif, Stanley?
You're not including
yourself on this list, Dex?
Remind me again who's
in charge of this game?
I didn't plan this.
No, clearly you didn't.
This is not my fault!
Carlos, you should have never
trusted someone like him
to lead a mission like this.
Someone like me?
Elitist, trust fund wannabe.
-Easy.
-You needed so desperately
to make a name for yourself,
it led to negligence!
That's enough! Stanley, cool it!
Dex, sit down. Now.
(Emilia sighs)
I still believe we
will find answers
if we solve the riddles.
Yes, I agree. I'll
join you and Stanley.
As will I.
I'd also like to stay.
I trust Stanley and
I'm quite terrified
about encountering
the killer out there.
That's fine, Inga.
Given the trust
issues, I volunteer
to partner with Khalif
on a search team.
Though I would request
smoother terrain.
I have a dodgy knee.
All right, well, then
you two go due east,
take the golf course
and surrounding area.
Tom, Janey, and I will
go south to the beach.
We rendezvous at the
beach cabana in one hour.
(soft gentle suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
So I wrote Evelyn's second
riddle in iambic pentameter
and laid the Cardano
grille over it.
-And it didn't work.
-(sighs) Exactly.
That would be far too easy.
The second riddle
was what again?
Okay. "No one ate
while the scion waited.
Far too confused to
follow his mother's words
for his own good."
-Sorry, what is scion?
-Uh, a descendant.
Usually someone from
a notable family.
So like Telemachus?
Yeah, like Telemachus,
but also like John
Murtaugh, son of Evelyn,
who was full of words.
Evelyn was obsessed with Greece
and set more than
one novel there.
(sighs) Where's
Evelyn? (whispers)
Oh, "Shadows of Santorini."
Yes, let's look for
additional Cardano grilles
and hidden papers.
Okay.
Look at this one?
"Greek To Me."
-Look at this one.
-Yeah, I think this is
-some product list.
-(speaks faintly) Yeah.
-Thank you.
-And this? Yes!
Why don't we each go
through these page by page
and, and see if we
find any annotations?
Oh, might I suggest that
we also scan the text
for any reference to
the second riddle?
Yeah. Great, okay,
let's settle in.
Um, if you don't mind,
I'm going to do my
reading on the veranda.
I promise to shout
if anyone approaches.
(suspenseful music)
(gentle dramatic music)
I thought maybe we'd see signs
of the killer bunked
on the beach overnight,
but there's nothing.
Hmm.
So now that Emilia's
moving closer,
do you think, you know?
You know how much I adore Em.
And?
And we agreed to take
it one day at a time.
Well, just don't spend too
many days before acting on it.
We never know how
many days we have.
Especially on this island.
(gentle dramatic music)
Oh!
-What?
-I just realized something.
There's a cryptic code
in the second riddle
far more simpler than
the Cardano grille.
It's a, it's number
substitution.
I don't follow.
Okay, no one, use
the numerical, ate.
Well, that's a number.
Oh, I get it. So
far too is a two.
To follow, another two.
-For his.
-Four. Exactly.
So 18224.
Maybe it's a specific
place in one of her books.
Perhaps a page number
and a line count.
Great idea, um, so it could be
page 182, line 24.
(gentle dramatic music)
Page 182 here is the
end of a chapter.
It's only seven lines long.
My page 182 is the
beginning of a chapter
and half the page is empty.
Mine's a description
of a Grecian heir.
Emilia?
Uh.
(dramatic music)
My page 182, line 24
is the second half of a sentence
where a mother is scolding
her disobedient son.
Like the riddle.
And line 24 is just one word.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Dexter.
(slow dramatic music)
Does this mean
Dex is the killer?
We have to tell Stanley.
(book thuds)
Look, I'll stay here
and continue working.
Okay. Let's go.
(gentle dramatic
music) (water sloshing)
Tom! Anything?
Nothing. You?
Well, maybe Dex and
Khalif had more luck.
They should be here by now.
(dramatic music) (Janey sighs)
Well, why don't we go
to the golf course?
Maybe we'll meet them on route?
(gentle suspenseful music)
Stanley?
Stanley?
We shouldn't have
let him wander off.
He wasn't wandering off.
He was coming to this spot.
Well, we need to find him.
I prefer to stay here.
Okay, you wait here,
Carlos and I'll go
and look for him.
Okay, I'll lock
myself into my room.
Okay.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(dramatic music)
(golf carts rattling)
(gentle suspenseful music)
What's that?
That's Khalif.
Khalif!
(Janey pants)
Are you okay?
No, no! Stay down, stay down.
Well, at least he's not dead.
Are you hurt? (Khalif groans)
Where's Dex?
That's a great question.
(soft gentle suspenseful music)
[Emilia] Stanley?
(gentle dramatic music)
[Carlos] Where's he gone?
Stanley?
(waves sloshing)
We should check the beach.
(sighs) Let's go.
(slow suspenseful music)
(gentle suspenseful music)
These must be Stanley's.
Well, this is the
only place left.
But why would he come down here?
(gentle suspenseful music)
Emilia, look! A second
set of footprints.
Well, they go up to the jungle
and they're going toward
the deceased's bungalow.
(waves crashing)
(Emilia sighs)
I really don't like the
idea of splitting up.
Well, I don't like the idea
of not finding Stanley.
All right, scream if
you're in trouble.
You too.
(gentle suspenseful music)
[Khalif] Ow! Ow!
-Ooh, sorry. Sorry.
-Ow!
I think you'll get
quite a headache.
I already do.
Khalif, tell me what happened.
We were driving the range.
Dex saw something in the
sand trap, something shiny.
He drove us over
here. We got out.
Next thing I remember, you
guys are helping me up.
(wind whooshing)
(suspenseful music)
Guys. Guys!
You're gonna wanna see this.
You be all right?
I'm okay. Go, go.
(Khalif groans)
(gentle dramatic music)
[Tom] That's what I
think it is, right?
Blood? Yeah.
But Khalif hasn't
got any blood on him.
There's more leading this way.
What do you wanna do?
Let's see where it takes us.
Janey help Khalif.
Tom, you ride with me.
Right.
(soft suspenseful
music) (waves crashing)
(suspenseful music)
(water burbling)
(object clicks)
(suspenseful music)
(object thuds)
(door creaks)
(suspenseful music continues)
(soft ominous music)
(object thuds)
(soft ominous music continues)
(Emilia gasps) (club thuds)
(man grunts and thuds)
(gentle dramatic music)
(gold carts rattling)
(suspenseful music)
It's getting heavier.
Which means it's a wound
that's not been taken care of.
Is it possible Dex attacked
you and you fought back?
I'm pretty sure
I'd remember that.
Let's follow it.
-(Khalif groans)
-No, no.
You should stay here.
Not a chance. I wanna this guy.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Tom, go to the top of the
tower, yell if you see anything.
Jason, this is the storyline
you were working
on two months ago.
I'm aware. That's not
good news for Dex.
You all right?
(groans)Thank you.
I'm so sorry.
No, no, it's my fault.
I shouldn't have-
I heard a noise.
You found Stanley.
Yeah, and I hit him.
Because I foolishly
crept up on her.
What are you doing here?
Well, I was getting
nowhere with the book,
so I thought I'd take
a walk, clear my head,
wound up here and thought
a soak in the hot tub
would be a good idea.
I, uh, realize this all
sounds a tad suspicious.
It does, yeah.
More than a tad.
How do we know you weren't
meeting your accomplice here?
Um, well, I suppose you don't.
Because somebody was
drinking a glass of wine.
Was that you?
It wasn't.
I didn't even enter the place
until I heard something.
I was tempted by the hot
tub, like I told you.
Emilia, did you
look in the bedroom?
Not yet.
Why don't we all go look?
Sure. (sighs)
(somber suspenseful music)
(Emilia gasps)
(suspenseful music)
(sighs) Looks like
someone's targeting members
of your team, Stanley.
(dramatic music)
Surely someone saw my notes
on "Murder at the Ruins."
That seems highly likely.
Well, then the killer
must be someone among us.
Janey.
(somber music)
Just remember who you can trust.
There's blood on the window!
Like a lot, a lot of blood!
(Janey exclaims)
[Janey] Dexter's hat.
I think whoever wounded Dex
threw him from the tower.
No one could survive that fall.
(somber music)
That's two dead.
So it would appear
that all the members
of the " Mystery Mountain"
team are potential targets.
Why? That makes no sense.
The second clue led us to
believe that Dex was the killer,
but that's been proven wrong.
Khalif, you remember nothing?
Not a thing.
Isn't it far more likely,
if there is an
inside man among us,
that the killer is
working with somebody
from the "Mystery Island" team?
-Excuse me!
-What?
Why?
Oh, just because you found,
uh, a bunch of
photos of you guys.
Yeah, that's exactly
what I'm saying.
Well, maybe those were put there
to throw suspicion
on one of you!
(all yelling)
None of us are thinking clearly.
I suggest we all go to our rooms
to rest and clear our heads.
Wise words, Emilia.
I prefer to go to my
original room on my own.
I think that's
best for all of us.
(somber music) (chairs scraping)
(gentle dramatic music)
(Emilia sighs)
It's not making sense.
(knuckles rapping)
Jason?
[Jason] How'd you guess?
You're not sleeping.
Neither are you. Despite
telling everyone we needed rest.
(door thuds)
I rested.
For what, 30 seconds?
It may have been 40.
I just, I-I can't stop thinking.
Oh, you wanna bounce
some stuff off me?
Yeah, that usually
works quite well.
It does indeed.
(Emilia sighs)
(quirky dramatic music)
So instead of thinking
about the evidence,
we should consider the
mind of the killer.
Good thing you're an expert.
You started to formulate
a profile of the killer?
That's what's off.
There's no consistency.
See, Regan's murder
shows extensive planning,
whereas Dex's is
simply opportunistic.
Regan's murder is bloodless,
whereas Dex's is
quite the opposite.
That makes the theory of
two killers pretty viable.
One being the muscle, the
other being the brains.
Possibly, but what if
the two-killer notion
is a deception to instill
fear and division among us?
What if there's simply
one killer who has access
to all the "Mystery
Mountain" files,
who understands psychology
and how to create fear,
and who knows enough
about profiling
to vary their methods of murder
in an effort to confuse us?
You're talking about Stanley.
(sighs) You had
the same thought?
Plus, I didn't buy his
reasons for wandering away
from you and Inga and Carlos.
Exactly, and not
just to the veranda,
but then to the jacuzzi?
So for that to be the
case, he would've had time
to leave his book at the
veranda, get to the golf course,
attack Khalif and Dex, drag
the wounded Dex to the tower,
throw him off and
still get back in time
to wash off any blood spatter.
Yeah. So how should we proceed?
I wanna talk to Stanley,
see how he reacts.
Alone or?
You coming down.
(dramatic music)
-Hang on.
-Yeah?
Maybe you should go in first.
He's more likely to let
you in if you're alone.
'Cause I'm some dumb cop,
and you're a brilliant
criminal profiler.
Well, I wouldn't
put it that way.
Stanley might.
Maybe.
And then once you've
had a chance to hit him
with some preliminary questions,
I'll knock on the door.
Are we working together?
No. We've each come
of our own volition.
I like it. Keep him off my eyes.
Precisely.
(knuckles rapping)
Jason Trent!
Stanley! (knuckles rapping)
(metal clanging)
(wind whooshing)
I think he's opening the window.
(door handle rattles)
(door thuds) (dramatic music)
Stanley!
-Don't move, Detective.
-Stanley, now come on.
[Stanley] I don't
wanna hurt you,
but you gotta listen to me.
[Jason] I'm listening.
[Stanley] Huh?
Are you listening?
I am listening, Stanley.
Somebody's trying to frame me.
-I am being framed!
-Okay!
And I will listen
to you, Stanley,
- if you put down-
- Do you believe me?
Do you understand me?
But you got to listen to me.
Somebody is trying to frame me.
I understand that.
Yeah? I want you to believe me.
- I understand- - Stanley!
(Stanley grunts and exclaims)
Now, let's make this official.
You are under arrest for
assaulting an officer.
Anything you say can and
will be used against you
in a court of law and you
have the right to an attorney.
If you cannot afford one,
one will be provided for you.
Do you understand these
rights as I've read them?
I know my Miranda rights
and I don't mind talking
because I'm telling you I
did not kill Regan or Dex.
And by Monday, when
your colleagues
from the police force arrive,
I promise you they'll agree.
Now, if you would
please uncuff me.
-Thank you.
-Don't thank me.
I'm locking you up.
Emilia, you gotta believe me.
I'm being framed! (exclaims)
(Stanley grunts)
(gentle suspenseful music)
(Emilia sighs)
(Stanley grunts and pants)
(dramatic music)
Storage room?
Well, for now it's
a holding cell.
Listen, you said I was under
arrest for assaulting you.
Does that mean you don't
think I killed them?
Stanley, you are
my prime suspect.
I might be adding murder
to your list of charges
when my colleagues
get here on Monday,
but for now, assaulting an
officer's more than enough
to hold you.
Well, can you please
uncuff me then?
I'll be back.
(door thuds)
(keypad beeping)
(lock buzzes)
(suspenseful music)
(Stanley sighs)
Hey.
You get Stanley secured?
I did. Yeah.
And he actually
pulled a knife on you?
I brought them all up to speed.
I never trusted Stanley.
Yeah. Yeah, me neither.
I thought it was Dex
you didn't trust?
Oh, well I didn't, but clearly
I was mistaken about Dex.
But no, I felt that Stanley
was extremely suspicious
with the whole, "I don't
know anything about the game"
"because I was called
away by the FBI," story.
Well, what's Stanley saying now?
Nothing yet. I wanted to
talk to you all first.
Best to go into an interview
with some ammunition.
Who knows anything about
Dr. Stanley Williams?
He's a criminal psychologist,
a university professor,
and he consults with the FBI.
He's well respected.
He also wrote a seminal
book on criminal profiling.
"Mind of a Killer."
Might turn out to be an
autobiographical title.
So you do think that he
murdered Regan and Dex?
I'm not sure yet, but he's
certainly my prime suspect.
I got a bad vibe
from him right away.
He kept saying that he
knew me from somewhere.
And you don't know him?
No.
I think we need to talk
to the surviving members
of the "Mystery Mountain" team.
(gentle dramatic music)
(waves sloshing)
(seagulls squawking)
Thank you for meeting with us.
Of course. Where's Stanley?
In custody.
I don't understand.
I went to talk to Stanley
and he assaulted me.
-What?
-With a knife.
Thanks to Emilia, I was able
to turn the tables on him.
I have him locked
in a secured room.
- Well, that's- - Shocking.
I had several discussions
with Stanley about
futility of violence.
Interesting.
What else can either of
you tell us about Stanley?
-Well.
-Well, has no children,
no family.
He's quite devoted to his work.
And he's writing on
a sequel to his book.
Yeah, that's what
I got from him too.
Although he didn't spend
the week here with us,
just came in the
day before you guys.
But I did get to talk to him
about his work
profiling killers.
What did he say?
He said that murder can
be quite energizing.
I mean, I thought he meant
talking to murderers.
Now I see how it could maybe be
like he was revealing something.
Thank you both.
I'm gonna go question Stanley.
-Won't you join me?
-Of course.
Might I suggest that the
rest of us remain here
and work out the third
riddle of Evelyn's?
It might yet prove helpful.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(keypad beeping)
(lock buzzes)
Oh, hello.
Did you fall over?
Just tried to get some sleep.
But the combination of
handcuffs and concrete
made it difficult.
I'll tell you what,
Stanley, if you promise
not to do anything stupid,
I'll let you loose.
I promise.
(Stanley grunts and groans)
Thank you.
(Stanley groans)
Have a seat.
May I ask?
We're asking the questions.
Understood.
Did you rig the device
that killed Regan?
I did not.
Did you attack Khalif
and murder Dex?
Certainly not.
But you don't have an
alibi for Dex's murder?
Oh yes, I'm painfully
aware of that.
But still, I didn't do it.
Honestly, I thought the two
of you were better at this,
which is why I'm shocked
you've been tricked
into thinking I'm the killer.
We never said you
were the killer.
Oh, good. So I can go then.
Sit down.
Why do you think
you're being framed?
Because I am.
Why would Khalif or
Inga wanna frame you?
I would assume so
they don't get caught.
But you're assuming
it's one of our team
and not one of your team.
We have plenty of
history with our team.
Not Tom Robinson, you don't.
You have no history
with him, but I do.
You said you thought
you knew him.
Yes, I suppose it took
being locked up in here
to bring it back to me.
It's been a couple years.
Tom wasn't quite as
fit, had shorter hair,
but he was a student
of mine at GW.
As you know, I was
an adjunct professor,
taught a couple
of classes there.
But I know why Tom pretended
not to remember me.
Why?
Because I turned him
in for plagiarism,
which led to his expulsion.
Did he confront you
about it at the time?
Only via email.
He said something to the effect
that I destroyed his life
and he was gonna
make me pay for that.
And now I'm afraid he may have
found a way to do just that.
(dramatic music)
(group chattering)
Yes, poor Dex.
Oh, Jason. Has
Stanley confessed?
Not yet. Do you mind
if I borrow Bennett?
Oh no, of course.
Bex? (gentle dramatic music)
How can I help?
This may seem like
a strange question,
but where did Tom go to college?
Uh, the University of
the Virgin Islands.
So not George
Washington University?
Oh no, he did in fact
begin his degree there.
Do you know why he transferred?
No idea. Is this somehow
pertinent to our situation?
It might be. Could you ask
him to come in here please?
Yes, of course.
I can't help but
bring up the fact
that this new
revelation from Stanley
is now dividing members
of our own team.
Fits your profile of
the killer. I get it.
Hey guys, what's up?
Tom, you started your undergrad
at George Washington University.
Wow, uh, not what I was
expecting, (chuckles)
But yeah, yeah, I
was at GW for a year.
-Why?
-Why did you leave?
Well, um, (scoffs) I met
a girl over spring break
and she was at the University
of the Virgin Islands.
I was just, just madly
in love with her,
so I transferred.
So you weren't expelled from GW?
No.
Was Stanley Williams one
of your professors there?
I don't believe this.
Is that guy accusing me?
Just answer the question.
Fine. The, the answer is no.
I didn't have Stanley
as a professor.
I didn't even know
he taught there.
I- I was a business major.
My specialty was in
hospitality management.
(scoffs) I never saw
that guy until yesterday,
I swear to you.
Okay.
Thank you.
Am I a suspect?
Everyone's a suspect
until they're not.
Okay.
Why don't you go and
head to the game room?
Sure.
(soft ominous music)
We have no way of knowing
which one of them is
telling the truth.
But the fact that
Stanley knew Tom
was at GW and left prematurely-
Is not a good look for Tom.
(suspenseful music)
-Janey, darling.
-Thank you.
Oh grand. Should we
report on our progress?
That would be great. Yeah.
Right.
According to Stanley, Regan
wrote AI Evelyn's scripts
and only she knew the
answer to the riddles.
But is this true?
Add to it, the killer certainly
intended Regan's murder
as a mockery to the
Telemachus solution
from riddle number one.
Right, so it makes sense
that Regan shared
the riddle solution
with the killer
who then killed her
because she found out
who the killer was.
(sighs) It sounds a bit
circular and logic, Janey.
But does it?
Or does it sound like the
kind of twisted thinking
a killer like Stanley
is capable of?
No, so why kill Dex?
I mean, perhaps he figured
out who the killer was,
but maybe the killer is planning
on killing everyone
on the island.
A serial killer, like the
ones that Stanley profiles.
Serial killers follow
patterns in their murders.
They don't vary their methods.
Except for Lonnie Alfred.
He's behind bars.
A copycat or someone
close to him?
Well, yes, like Stanley.
Okay.
Okay, um, what about
the third riddle then?
Um, "The evening sun is
hidden, shrouded in deception,
with discovery comes failure."
Well, yes, (sighs) the Cardano
grille, it didn't work.
And obviously there are
no number substitutions.
We thought about what
would hide the sun,
and went down the cloud route.
Deception would equal clouds.
And that didn't get us anywhere.
And I didn't find
any other traditional
code models being used.
Can I raise a question? What
if Stanley isn't the killer?
Or he's working
with an accomplice
who's still at
large on the island?
Yes. I do not relish the idea
of staying another night.
Even with locked bedroom doors.
I'd feel safer if we
were all together.
Might I suggest that
we all sleep in here
and then take shifts
keeping watch?
Yes. That's a great idea.
Jason, what do you think
of us all staying
the night in here,
and then taking
turns to keep watch?
-That's good thinking.
-Yeah.
Em, there's something
I need to show you.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
(suspenseful music)
Did you talk to Tom Robinson?
Sit down, Stanley.
We did. And he said he left
GW for different reasons.
Oh, well, then I'm sure
he is telling the truth
and I'm lying.
Speaking of not being truthful,
when were you
planning on telling us
that you'd been in contact
with Lonnie Alfred,
the London serial
killer I got to confess?
I would assume that's
a rhetorical question.
Letters from Lonnie
Alfred to you,
which Jason found in your room.
"What if I told you I
had a partner in my work?
We can only discuss in person.
Can you come to London?"
You told us you couldn't
write with Regan
because you were called away.
Called away by Lonnie Alfred?
Is Lonnie's partner
now your partner?
Are they on this island?
You found some letters.
You're leaping to a
lot of conclusions.
Fill in the blanks for us.
Hmm. I think I'm done talking.
(somber suspenseful music)
[Jason] Hey, you okay?
(sighs) I should
have told you sooner,
but ever since the
Lonnie Alfred case,
I- I-I feel like
I'm being followed.
Why didn't you tell me?
Aw, I thought I
was being paranoid.
I've been through this before.
You can always confide in me.
I know.
I- I didn't want
to raise any alarms
until I had some proof.
If it was someone
associated with Lonnie,
why would they go after Regan?
Unless Regan wasn't
the intended victim.
(suspenseful music)
(dart whooshes) (Regan exclaims)
-(dramatic music)
-Oh!
(screen whooshes)
Honey. You're allergic.
I was the target.
I hate to say it, but
it makes the most sense.
(gentle dramatic music)
I need to go and check on Janey.
(footsteps tapping)
Brought you a
pillow and blanket.
Oh, you're the best.
I know this probably
isn't the time,
but don't you think that
Khalif is rather handsome?
(chuckles) Not the time.
Okay, fair, but I don't
think it's just me
thinking about what
tonight could be,
if we weren't only worried
about a killer on the loose?
Like you and Jason, hm?
(gentle music)
(sighs) One day at a time.
I am so over that cliche.
Let me help you with that.
Thank you.
(gentle music)
Hm?
(waves sloshing)
Grounds are clear.
[Emilia] (sighs) It
is a beautiful sunset.
It's always bothered me.
The sunset?
No, uh, the fact that we
say the sun is setting
when really we're just
turning away from it.
Jason! You're a genius.
Well, it was Copernicus.
No! No, I mean the third riddle.
Of course, the three riddles
form a profile. (scoffs)
You've lost me.
The third riddle starts,
"The evening sun is hidden."
Well, why is the sun hidden?
Because the Earth
turns away from it.
Now I use the homophone, S-O-N,
and who's turning away from him?
Mother Earth.
Right, and the answer
to the first riddle
was a son, Telemachus.
Yeah, a, a prince with
no power. A scion.
And the answer to the second
riddle, the invisible man.
Someone nobody sees.
And now this son, whose
mother turns away from him.
Put it all together,
it's what I suspected.
John Murtaugh. (gentle
dramatic music)
(water sloshing) (gentle music)
I feel like I should say
something to Jason about it.
Well, should I go and
get him, or just wait?
I talked to him, I
didn't get anything.
Oh, good morning. I
didn't want to wake you.
-Is everything all right?
-Yeah, I just,
I realized something
this morning.
-About the third riddle?
-Which we know
is connected to John Murtaugh.
-Right.
-He's dead,
I know, but there's a
part of him that's not.
(suspenseful music)
John Murtaugh. Still a
presence, even from the grave.
What are we looking for?
I'm not sure exactly,
but I have a feeling this
was put here for a reason.
Agreed. It must be a clue.
"The sun is hidden."
Evelyn's son!
Is that hologram
lady coming back?
I didn't love her.
The third line of the poem
is "Shrouded in deception."
That's it. The beard.
The beard that John
Murtaugh was wearing
as a disguise when he
was shot with the arrow.
On the right side of his neck.
(screen whooshes)
(somber music)
This man is really
and truly dead.
(screen whooshes)
(stone scraping)
Whoa!
I didn't see that coming.
(suspenseful music)
Those look like
Stanley's glasses.
Jason.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Stay here.
(suspenseful music)
(Jason gasps)
(dramatic music)
Em!
Looks like blood splatter
And a bullet hole.
(sighs) He was in my custody.
Hey, don't go there.
This isn't your fault, but
we should tell the others.
(gentle dramatic music)
(gentle ominous music)
But so, if the killer
didn't break in-
The keypad is intact, which
means they knew the code.
So Stanley wasn't the killer?
Or he was the
inside man all along
and his partner killed him.
Which means that we undoubtedly
have a killer amongst us.
On my island.
Janey, could you take
everyone to the game room?
Jason and I will be
there in a minute
to come up with a plan.
Oh. (clears throat)
Everyone.
(soft suspenseful music)
What's going on?
(exclaims) Something's
bothering me.
(gentle dramatic music)
Why put Stanley's
glasses in there?
That's a really good question.
Evelyn's whole message
was built around the idea
of disappointment in her son.
What are you saying?
I think we should write down
everything that's happened
since we've arrived.
Not the puzzles, just
the plain simple facts.
(slow dramatic music)
(foreboding music)
It's quite clever.
No argument here.
(gasps) What are you doing?
-Janey.
-We've been looking for you.
- Sorry, we- - You
two being in here,
you were making yourselves
targets for the killer!
That's not true. Is it, Khalif?
What are you talking about?
It's a lot.
We should chat with
everyone at the same time.
Janey, could you gather
everyone on the veranda please?
Right.
(suspenseful music)
What is this all about?
We don't have time for
any more game play.
I agree. As of this moment,
the game playing is over.
Well, that's a rather
cryptic statement.
Cryptic and meta, which is
what our "Mystery Island"
team have been experiencing,
beginning with a
video of the mother
of "Mystery Island"'s founder,
delivering a very
cryptic message to us.
Which we solved last
night, and which-
Jason, forgive me,
but we all know this.
And it doesn't change the fact
that three people are dead
and there is still
a killer out there.
Three people dead, but yet
where are their bodies?
Well, the killer
took Regan's body
to draw us out of the
mansion that night.
Perhaps, but then there's
Dex thrown off a tower,
yet a body is
nowhere to be found.
Yes, the killer dragged it away.
Maybe, but then there's Stanley,
shot sometime last night.
His glasses were left behind,
but his body was taken?
Right, so three murders
and three missing bodies.
Evelyn's riddles pointed us
to this very meta solution.
The person who isn't what they
seem to be is John Murtaugh,
whose final act of his
lifetime was to stage a murder
that wasn't a murder.
(screen whooshes)
(trigger clicks) (dart
whizzes and thuds)
(suspenseful music)
(screen whooshes)
We should have known this was
a mockery of John Murtaugh
as soon as Regan was shot
with a remote-controlled dart.
Ah, h-hang on.
Are you saying that the
three people aren't dead?
Because I mean, we
all saw Regan die.
You checked her pulse yourself.
Or she faked her convulsions
and her lack of pulse was due
to her so-called
anxiety medication.
(gentle dramatic music)
A beta blocker would slow
her heart down enough
that her pulse wouldn't
be felt with a hand.
(screen whooshes)
Khalif, you were the
last one to join us
out here after the explosion.
(screen whooshes)
(suspenseful music)
[Emilia] Were you giving
Regan a shot of epinephrine
to revive her, enabling her to
simply walk out of the house?
-(Regan gasping)
-Shh, shh, shh, shh.
Come on, come with me.
You're okay, you're
okay. That's it.
(screen whooshes)
Khalif, is this true?
(suspenseful music)
I'd like to hear what
else they have to say.
(gentle dramatic music)
Remember, Regan's death
wasn't the first thing
that went wrong that night.
First was the revelation
of Inga's so-called
criminal history.
Inga and Dex's quick
exit gave them time
to put explosives onto
the Bluetooth terminal,
which could have been
triggered by the same remote
that triggered the dart
gun, which shot Regan.
Telemachus roughly
translates to Archer,
but it actually
means far from battle
because an archer can
kill from a distance.
[Jason] He could have
hidden it behind a book
before he insisted
we frisk everyone.
Then Dex, along with a
very much alive Regan,
and Khalif, staged his
death at the ruins.
(dramatic music)
He wore this hat not
only to irritate Janey,
but so there would be a
recognizable clothing item
to draw everyone's attention.
What about Stanley?
Stanley becomes
crucial at this point.
Everything he said and did
was designed to make
him our prime suspect.
[Emilia] He pulled
a knife on Jason
to ensure he'd get locked up.
Making Inga so
scared to be here,
we all had to stay
in one room together.
Which gave Dex, Regan,
and Stanley plenty of time
to stage Stanley's murder.
Queue us with the replica
glasses in the hidden box,
and dispatch one final
insult to John Murtaugh.
A rather brilliant callback
to the original murder
of "Mystery Island."
And a very meta game
for us all to play.
Three murders that,
like Murtaugh's,
weren't murders at all.
(group applauding)
(group chuckling)
Well done!
Bravo. Bravo!
Well done, you two.
I bet Regan you wouldn't
be able to solve it.
And I'm happy to say you
owe me a nice big check.
(Dex chuckles)
Please forgive my
bit of deception
about your academic record, Tom.
No worries, man.
This was awesome.
And Emilia, my apologies
for bringing Lonnie
Alfred into this.
I hope I didn't cause
you any undue stress.
I respect your work immensely.
-Thank you.
-Detective,
I do hope you'll consider
dropping the charges.
We're good.
But I do have one more
thing to say to Dex.
Oh yeah. What's that?
Thanks for letting me
play the bad guy for once.
(both laugh)
Hats off to you,
Stanley. You're a legend.
Ah.
And Carlos, did we
meet the gold standard
set by the "Mystery
Island" team?
I am completely blown away.
And Janey.
Yes, I must admit I
am also blown away.
Well, I learned from
studying the best.
You are incredible at this.
I was just trying to keep up.
Well, I was worried that
you would outshine us,
and I think that you might have.
Nonsense. I'm honored
to have you as a mentor.
Oh, so I'm your boss?
(Dex laughs)
No, no, I think, I think
that's about right.
(chuckles) No, I think
that we can all agree
that "Mystery Mountain"
is in very good hands.
-I second that.
-Third.
To the first of many.
Hear, hear. (group applauding)
Well then, (sighs) should
we head to the dining room
for a victory lunch?
Is anyone else starving?
Oh yes, I'll say. (chuckles)
I think we should get
that wonderful ice cream
that we got from Los Angeles.
(uplifting music)
Not hungry?
Famished.
-But?
-But I've been wanting
to do something for
a really long time.
What?
(birds chirping)
(gentle romantic music)
Almost better than
solving any game.
Agreed.
I think the best game will be
trying to solve
the mystery of you.
(gentle triumphant music)
Finally.
(bright upbeat music)
(Emilia and Jason chuckle)
(gentle uplifting music)
(upbeat music)
(gentle uplifting music)
