Ouija Japan (2021) Movie Script
Kokkuri-san. With its origins in
western table turning in seance,
Kokkuri-san was introduced by American
crew members
who landed on
the Ise Peninsula in 1884.
You probably know this game,
maybe even played it.
To play, you write yes, no,
the numbers zero to nine
all the letters, and draw a gate
on a paper.
The fox spirit would be summoned and
possess the coin.
Participants asked questions, and
it would move the coin to give answers.
It's said if you break Kokkuri-san's
rules you can become possessed yourself.
Some kill themselves and some try to
kill others.
[music]
Hold on there buster!
[Gunshot]
[Gun loads, fires]
[Gasping]
Gotcha!
[Slashing sound]
[Music]
[Clapping]
Hey, you know what?
My son started violin lessons last week.
- Good morning.
- Ah, good morning.
And then...
You don't need to listen to this, Karen.
Good morning.
- Good morning
It's just a lot of complaining, trying to
one-up each other.
- Yeah.
Good morning.
- Good morning, Ms. Murakami!
- Your English is as fluent as ever.
- Is it?
What were you talking about?
Well...
About how everyone's been working
so diligently this morning.
[Laughter]
They didn't get a word. Oh, what's wrong?
Oh nothing. Uh, what were you guys talking
about?
Um, just that Japan's globalness still
has a long way to go.
- Right, Ms. Murakami?
- Yes?
[Laughter] Yes?
What is it about?
- You weren't listening?
- Sorry.
Thanks for always helping
me out by the way.
With what?
I've been in Japan for the past six months
and I still don't understand the language.
Like back there I was just making things
awkward like I always do
and you always help out
with that kind of stuff.
Nah. Hmm, you're very mindful
of others Karen.
Very Japanese.
- [laughs] Really?
I think you try to adjust to people,
put them before you.
In Japanese we say "enryo".
- Oh. [Chuckles] I guess...
You need to learn to
communicate with them.
How else will they
learn to like you?
I mean, I've been praying
to the deity every morning.
The deity doesn't do anything.
We control our fate.
I don't know, you never
go to the shrine, pray?
Nah, I don't believe in God.
I just think uh it's all pointless though.
It's all how we choose to use it.
I should work harder on my Japanese.
Good luck!
I'll see you later. "Matane".
Yeah, uh, "Matane".
[Music]
I'm home!
Hey, you're home early!
The meeting was quite quick.
- Oh, nice.
Let me help.
Thank you.
Looks delicious!
- Tofu dish?
- Yes.
Delicious.
Oh...
I did this today. Here, at the river.
Show me. Ah that's nice.
[laughs] I'm a photographer.
- Mmm.
Oh, what's that?
- Yeah, it's this cat.
I think I see it like a lot.
It's always at the Red River.
Yeah, wow.
And then, um...
Wait, this one...
Oh, wow.
[dishes clink]
[dish washing sounds]
my husband's off...
- We made inari sushi together.
- Nice!
- With your husband!
- Right.
Fujimoto-san?
- Good morning.
- Good morning, everyone.
Good morning, Fujimoto-san.
What happened to the community survey?
That deadline passed long ago and
we haven't heard anything from you.
Oh, I have to check with
my husband about that, because...
What, can't you do it on your own?
Oh, there was this kanji
that I didn't understand.
Yeah, yeah. You've been
here five, six months. I get it.
Is it about the community survey?
She can't read or write
without her husband.
That's inconvenient!
[laughter]
I don't know how well your life in Japan
will work out as it is.
Just because you came
from a different country
doesn't mean we will give
you a special treatment.
Oh...
- You know that, right?
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
You're a grown up.
- Yes.
- Fujimoto-san!
- Ah, good morning.
Did you see Yoshihara-san?
Do you know where she is?
She was not at the community center.
Oh, she was there until a minute ago.
- Any idea where she was headed?
- You really didn't know?
- I'm not sure
- Did she say something about the survey?
Um, yeah, she scolded
me about not turning it in
- She said Yoshihara-san was angry.
- Seriously?
She decides everything on her own.
Who she thinks she is?
We need to speak to Yoshihara-san.
If you see her, can
you speak to her?
Yeah, uh, OK.
Okay. Oh, see you later.
Okay.
Hello?
- Oh, this?
It's a survey to schedule volunteers for
the community cleaning.
Hmmm, you probably talked to
Sumida-san and Hashimoto-san.
They probably fought with
Yoshihara-san about who will clean when.
You didn't turn it in yet?
- [chuckles] No.
Yoshihara-san got pretty mad at me.
[gasps] Whatever. She is whack. [Laughs]
Satsuki, I've been here
for the past six months
and I feel like I'm just not getting
along with anyone.
Honestly, I'm kind of alone, and...
I don't know, sometimes I wonder if I'm
just gonna be like this forever, and...
You're so dramatic. Just keep having
conversations, live from day to day,
I like living in Japan, it's just,
I don't know, I get intimidated
by the other ladies, and...
[sigh] It's just me, so stupid.
You don't have to try so hard.
They're not worth it.
Do you plan to go camping?
- Yes.
- Really? I haven't decided yet.
- Good morning.
- Good morning! [Laughter]
Thank you.
Are you planning to participate?
"Sanka..." Oh, participate. Um, what,
in what?
Well, uh... camping.
Next week.
- Oh! Is it, oh.
You're scouting the camping place
for the kids next month. Oh, that's nice.
Sorry, slower?
Oh, um, you're going to scout
the camping place, right?
That's, um, understood.
That's nice.
Understood?! [Laughter]
Good!
You're going to the scout, huh?
Oh, to the kids camping. No, I don't
even know what just happened. Are you?
Well, I work from home.
[Trash bag crinkles]
So, staying over is a bit hard.
Staying over?
Oh, they use their kids
as an excuse, and...
One-night getaway to relax and have fun
for housewives busy with
their husbands and chores,
What? Satsuki, you know
I don't speak Japanese...
Murakami-san,
Do you have to talk like that?
We all had a serious
discussion about the decision.
In front of this dump?
I'm terribly sorry about that,
Chairperson Yoshihara!
So, you're not participating?
On hold for now.
I may join you
when my current job is done.
Hmm, OK.
How about you, Fujimoto-san?
Oh, um...
I heard you just said you are coming
but I understand that
you don't want to stay
over with us. I get it.
No, it's not that. Um,
I just, I, I wasn't sure.
You answer yes without knowing?
You really need to be careful
or you definitely get scammed
She said yes without knowing
what you were talking about.
Really? [Laughter]
Don't worry Karen. Those scammers
only go to a dumb old lady's house.
What's wrong...?
Did you receive a call that
your grandson was in an accident?
I have a son, not a grandson...!
Stop this funny business!
So, what is your decision,
Fujimoto-san?
Oh, um, I should probably
ask my husband first.
Again? You really can't make
a decision on your own, huh.
[Laughs]
- I'm home.
- Hey honey.
I actually want to
talk to you about something.
What is it? Sounds important.
So, I don't know, I got invited by the
other women at the community meeting
to this camping thing, and...
It's an overnight stay so I don't
know how comfortable I am with that.
[Laughs] That's great, sounds like fun.
Oh, uh, yeah, but it's pretty far.
It's two days. I'm staying over, you know
I don't speak Japanese that well, and...
I don't know.
- [Laughs]
What, you'll be going with the other
housewives, right?
- Yeah...
- You'll be fine, you should go.
[Music]
You're nervous it seems.
- I guess.
- You don't get along with them?
- I want to get along with them,
it's just not working out.
Is she going, one... the one who speaks
English very well.
She's your friend, right?
- Oh, Satsuki, yeah.
She said she has work,
I don't think she will.
I see.
Oh wait, isn't that tough lady
the committee chairwoman?
I thought she spoke English
pretty well
Yoshihara-san? She doesn't like me.
- Ah.
I see... Yeah.
Yeah, I heard she likes to complain a lot.
Don't worry, in Japan
some people are like that.
But that is just because they
expect better, it's probably not personal.
Maybe. But, I mean, I hope that's what it
is
Hmm. Well maybe if you go on this
trip you'll find out
it's probably nothing,
and you'll learn Japanese too.
[Laughs] I mean, I do need to
learn Japanese, but, I don't know, like,
what if I go and then make things
awkward like I always do,
and it just makes everything worse?
Uh, don't be nervous.
Oh, this camping place, it's called
Kasekimura right?
I think so. Yeah, I couldn't look it up
because I didn't know the kanji.
Oh yeah. I think it's actually well known.
Oh, here, I found it.
Ah, it's a very old traditional
Japanese village.
It's very beautiful, you can take very
beautiful pictures there Karen
Maybe you should
consider going. Hmm?
[Music]
So, you'll come. OK, Good.
Yes, good.
Oh Karen, Good morning.
Satsuki, I never see you around here,
what's going on?
Well, I got my work done, so
I came to tell Yoshihara-san
I would join the trip this weekend.
That's awesome! Oh my gosh!
What about you, have you
finally consulted your husband?
Oh, uh, yeah, uh,
I'd love to participate.
Oh, oh okay. Well, I'll see you then.
Yes, I will see you.
So, you decided to go?
- Yeah.
Satsuki's going so I think it's going to
be good now.
And it'll be a chance for me to make
friends, learn Japanese, like you said.
So...
- Satsuki Murakami, right?
It seems like we have a lot
to thank her for.
Yeah, Satsuki's really cool I'll
introduce you to her
She's smart, she's funny, she's really
honest.
I mean, she can be kind of rough when she
talks sometimes but...
I wish I was a bit more
like her sometimes.
That's up to you!
- [Laughs]
if you put your mind to it, mmm?
You don't have to keep wishing.
It's funny, Satsuki says stuff like that
all the time.
Thanks honey.
- Be careful. Have fun.
[Music]
I'll see you later.
[Sound of train passing]
I can just barely
get a cell phone signal.
It's gonna be tough if anything happens.
What?
- What's wrong?
Oh... Nothing.
Ladies! We don't have it all day. Move!
[Groans]
She's yelling.
[Nature sounds]
[Rain]
Terrible weather.
I knew it would rain.
Oh hi, are you from this village?
Uh, no, no, no, no,
I'm with the group.
Oh, you're with, you're with us?
Oh yes, yes. Oh, okay my name is,
my name is Kadowaki.
Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you. Karen Fujimoto.
Uh, sorry, my English, uh,
is not very good.
Oh no, that's fine.
Um, so what do you do for a living?
Um, well...
Uh, his wife is hardcore
career woman so he doesn't work
and lays around all day at home.
In Japanese we call these guys "himo".
[chuckles] That's nice.
You just said something
bad about me, didn't you?
It's your imagination. [Laughs]
[Wildlife noises]
This looks like it's about to collapse.
I'll take a picture.
Hey! What are you doing?!
What?
I heard you bad-mouthing.
I wasn't bad-mouthing.
What are you talking about?
What's happening? Why me?
He could be dangerous!
So, this village has a fox deity,
Orinari-san
She is the guardian of this village.
If you offend her,
she will punish you and drag you to hell.
Wait did you say fox?
- Some people in this village
can be so fanatic. I know they
were being disrespectful,
but I don't know if he
needs to be that crazy.
[Wildlife, rain noises continue]
- I'm so hungry!
- It was weird.
He was holding a sickle,
it was really annoying.
I want revenge.
- Right
- Yes.
- What should we do?
- Well...
Oh, you don't say this one...
OK, U-Me-...
- Shi?
- Shu, Shu...
- It's just like...
- There was a play just like...
[muttering] Ume-Shu.
[Claps] Let's do Kokkuri-san!
Ah, good idea!
OK, we need a sheet of paper and a pen.
Kokkuri-san?
Mmm, it's a game where
you talk to the spirit, mmm,
Kokkuri-san, you put letters on a paper.
- Oh! A Ouija board.
But,
why do they want to play that?
Well,
Kokkuri-san summons a fox demon.
I think she wants to do it for revenge,
because the guy told her she will go to
hell
Wait, a fox spirit...
That guy at the temple said...
Would that... curse us?
- No [laughs].
It's only in your head.
I played it as kid.
Usually, it's a kids game but I guess
we're among young souls. [Chuckles]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
How many times per week
does Fukuda-san have sex?
[Laughter]
It says seven times!
You're so active!
Please return to the gate.
Satsuki?
I don't want to translate this.
Just questions about money
and sex. What else?
Hey, join us!
We're having a good time here.
What? Drunkenly interacting
with Kokkuri-san?
That sounds like fun. Very funny.
- Oh... [nervous laughter] Uh...
- Let's do it!
- Okay
- Finger, here, yeah?
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
we invite you to come visit us.
If you are in our presence
please move the coin to "YES".
Now Kokkuri-san has
to understand English...
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san
how many men is Karen Fujimoto
currently seeing?
Oh, that's not true.
That was clearly a deliberate move.
If you have a problem with that,
you should join us.
Please go back to the gate.
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san, thank you.
Please go back to the gate.
Yes.
Thank you. You shouldn't
release your finger
uh, until the game is completely
over.
I guess now you're
cursed by the fox Karen.
You're always pestering Karen.
What's your problem?
Elitism? Racism?
Or are you jealous because your
husband's salary is lower than Karen's?
What? It's not your business.
I'm doing my best to help
Ms. Fujimoto get along with us.
It was just a little friendly prank,
you know that? Yeah, yeah.
Don't believe that Karen.
There is a word for
sneaky bitches like them.
We call them... Queen Bee!
What is your problem?!
You may be bi-sexual and
want to sleep with your friend. Right?
You, old-fashioned homophobe!
Oh, did I get that right?
Times may change,
but what's weird remains weird.
Don't get cocky.
[Slams bottle]
Hey, hey, look!
From the shrine's offertory box.
The shrine box!?
It's said this would make it
more effective.
Satsuki, what's going on?
It's from the shrine box.
Isn't that the donations?
This is gonna be fun!
You sound nervous.
You can leave if you want.
You've got to be kidding.
You invited me.
Besides,
I've got a question I'd like to ask.
What is it?
Who will end up the most
miserable among us?
That sounds interesting.
- Let's ask the deity about it.
- Yeah!
Get out of my way!
- Your finger, put it there.
- But it's from the donations...
[Slaps table]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
we invite you to come visit us.
If you are in our presence, please move
the coin to 'YES'.
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
who among us
will end up most miserable in life?
[Huffing]
[Loud grunts]
[Popping sound]
[Surprised yelling]
- Blood...
- Are you alright?
- Wipe!
- What's going on?
[Startled yelling]
That looks painful! Are you OK?
Are you alright?
It doesn't hurt, actually.
I'm not injured.
[Napkin paper rattles]
Is this blood?
- Creepy...
- Oh my god, it's...
It's disgusting.
I'm losing interest.
I'm going back to my room.
It's on your face.
- Karen...
- Satsuki?
- Karen... Let's go.
- OK.
[Creaking]
[Breathing]
[Music]
[Shrieks]
[Gasps]
[Creepy music]
[Wildlife noises]
She's dead.
Seriously?
Call the police!
Huh? I have no signal.
- I also have no signal.
- Why not?!
How do I know?
It was working until yesterday!
- Karen, go find someone from the town.
Okay.
- I will go too.
Someone, someone, help! Oh my god.
Oh my gosh, why?
What's going on?
Karen! You got that way.
- Okay.
Someone! Hello!
[Panting]
[Bell rings]
Oh, excuse me? Um,
could you please help, uh...
Can you help us?
Sixteen people are remaining.
Sixteen? Um, this is very
important, somebody is dead, uh,
Dead, Uh, dead, a woman is dead.
Satsuki, um, there's someone...
Um, she was just here.
You saw her too.
What is happening?
Yoshihara-san, please calm down.
I don't think yelling is...
Shut up! How could you be so calm?
A person is dead!
We all know that.
That's what I'm trying to figure out!
Just shut up for a second.
Anything?
- We checked all around but there's no one.
I'm getting a strange feeling here.
I feel like someone's watching us.
Like a war zone.
She said it's like a war zone.
It might be dangerous to go too far.
War zone, are you military or...
- See?
At the same time, she really
loves survival games.
So, whoever did this
might be watching us now, or...
You mean there's
a serial killer watching us?
Maybe.
If we had any weapons...
It's that woman with the mask!
She set the whole thing up.
If we can get her...
Calm down.
We know that.
It's too dangerous to search blindly
under the current circumstances.
So, you all saw her too?
- Yeah.
She suddenly... appears.
At the same time, gone like a ghost.
So not human?
Fox mask, fox...
Kokkuri-san?
- Are you kidding?
Ask Kokkuri-san where that thing is?
"Kokkuri-san, please come to help us!"
Are you nuts?
Oh, she's here!
[Spooky sounds]
[Gasps]
There are still 16 of you remaining.
Make sure you offer one sacrifice
within "3 moments".
If you want power,
call on me and offer your life.
Only one of you will survive.
Huh?
Wait! Everybody chase her!
Chase her!
Hurry up!
[Spooky music]
[Wildlife sounds]
What the hell was that?
I think the fox deity's cursing us.
Satsuki, do you think it's
because of yesterday,
like the deity cursing us,
or I don't know...
That's something ridiculous.
It's probably some crazy people
from the village like the guy
from yesterday at the shrine.
I guess it's possible
Does it even matter?
- Does it even matter?
Whatever it is, the question is
how we're going to survive.
Right?
I guess.
She said that 16 are remaining and,
there will be only one survivor, right?
It means if you kill all the others,
you can get out of here?
You're gonna try that?
No way.
That won't do any good,
just use common sense.
Right.
Where are you going?
None of your business.
We're going to go pick some flowers.
You don't know what's going to happen,
so, it's dangerous to go alone, right?
Yoshihira-san, maybe we should
take some time to rest too.
Yeah, you're right.
We are all quite stressed.
That sounds good.
Let's take some rest.
We don't know what's going to happen.
After you rest, can you explore
more about the app?
OK.
I'm restricted without a computer here,
but I'll see what I can do.
I will see you later then.
Well then...
[Wildlife noises]
[Sighs]
How did this happen?
[Exhales]
[Gasps]
[Dramatic music]
Karen!
[Impact sound]
We need to go!
[Dramatic music continues]
[Brushes rustle] [Gasping]
Shit! They're close. Karen,
give me your phone.
[gasps] What?
Come on!
- What?
[Grass rustling]
[Dramatic music]
[Grunting]
[Impact sound]
[Metallic clanking sound]
[Repeats]
[Cheering]
Me?
[Bell rings]
[Gong sound]
It's time.
[Slashing sound]
[Blood spattering]
[Collapses]
Karen, behind you!
[Dramatic music resumes]
[Grunts]
[Slashing sounds]
[Cracking]
[Groans, collapses]
Come on!
[Heavy breathing]
Hey...
- What?
You killed her?
If I didn't kill her,
she would have killed me.
How did this happen?
I... I just don't...
If I didn't kill her, that
fox face could have killed me.
But we could have tried to talk to her,
we could have, we could have...
I don't know, why kill? Why?
Why? I did what I had to.
Because of that we are alive
So, it's really the last one surviving is
the only one who can get out?
Yoshihara definitely
believes that and...
Look, as people die, more features
get unlocked in the app.
She may be right.
What?
I'll check out the new functions.
You should probably try to find a weapon.
Okay, all right.
Hey, it doesn't look like
the train is coming.
What?
What's going on?
A strike, perhaps?
No doubt about it.
It's reacting to him.
He is also a target,
although he wasn't there.
Well, we don't have any choice.
He stayed in another building yesterday.
He doesn't know anything.
That's convenient.
[panicked yelling]
[Pan swooshes]
[Gravel crackles]
[Yelling continues]
Satsuki?
Are you looking for someone?
[Slash] [Gasping]
[Dramatic music]
[Phone buzz]
Satsuki, help!
- I see you. Take the next turn.
- You run around too much.
- Wait, wait!
This is crazy, can we just talk for
a second?
Talk?
- I don't understand what you say.
I have nothing against you,
I'm sorry.
It's the only way.
[Impact sound]
[Grunts]
Hah, teamwork!
Did you just use me as bait?
Well, you know. Help me pick her up.
[Tape tear sound]
Hello, Yoshihara-san?
How are you doing?
Yes, you sound fine, too, Murakami-san.
[Water sloshing]
I have good news for you.
Apparently, every time one of us dies,
a new function is added to the app.
Every time one of us dies...
It's added at the same time.
Don't you think
that's a fair and good rule?
True.
Good research.
Hey.
When can I see you?
I'd like to hear more about it.
This game apparently has a time limit.
And I don't like to be lazy,
so, I'm coming to see you now.
Prepare your neck for my blade
and wait for me.
Alright.
I'll make sure
to be ready to welcome you.
I can't wait.
Now, I'll pass the phone to your friend.
See you later.
[Electric buzz]
[Screams]
[Line disconnects]
Why?
- What now?
Why did you kill her? You didn't need to.
I told you, it's kill or be killed.
I just don't understand, why can't we just
talk and work together?
If we work together, we could find
a way to get us all out, fight together,
I don't know. [Gasps]
I can't do this. I don't want to see
people getting hurt.
And I definitely
don't want to kill anyone.
You are so naive.
Well...
I have an appointment with Yoshihara.
Do you want to come?
Stop talking about talking and do it.
[Phone pings]
I'm gonna kill you,
weak little wimp!
[Grunts]
[Growling]
[Weapon clinks]
[Blow to face]
[Kicking sound]
[Stab sound]
[Blood splash]
Hello, Makoto?
I just killed one.
Got it.
Kaori,
I'm gonna drive one towards you.
Wait there.
Now! [Gunshot]
One less.
There's a chance someone is watching us.
Let's move.
OK.
I've got something. Come join me.
OK.
Hey, kept man!
[Panicked yelling]
You're a valuable asset.
Come with me.
Alright...
wiretapping and spy cam...
Every time one of us dies,
we get more functions...
"Offer your life"...
It's so interesting, isn't it?
A system that encourages
people to kill each other?
It's like a smartphone game
with a billing system.
I think it's a trap to try to get us
to all kill each other and then
in the end it's just going to be
all of us.
If we don't kill each other
and we keep running around,
that fox mask comes to kill us.
"3 moments"?
Does that mean three hours?
Judging from when the first person died...
You might be right.
Oh, I see now...
I remember that we saw the slot reel
before the time ran out.
It would be horrible
if every time the time runs out
a random person dies.
We will be in trouble if someone
runs away or hides.
[Screaming from phone]
Hold on there buster!
[Gunshot]
[Gun reloads, fires]
[Slashing sound]
[Giggles]
I think it's alright.
Sumida and the others
are buying us a lot of time.
Right, only If the remaining time is
carried over to the next time limit.
I wonder who's behind all this.
I don't want to play their game.
Yeah, if we keep killing each other,
it's only going to make him happy.
We need to stop this craziness.
If we work together
we could find a way we could all get out
She's right. Let's call a temporary truce.
We could start killing each other,
after we've done some research.
Right.
The best option is
we all make it out alive,
So, we can work together
Truce then.
- I'm counting on you.
- Leave it to me.
We'll get through this together.
I need you to tell me something.
What?
How were you able to monitor
Fujimoto-san on the run?
You can't just spy
on any phone, can you?
[Laughs]
I told you already.
It's a game with a billing system.
If you put your life on it a little more,
you might get a new function.
I see.
Okay, let's get to it.
[Claps]
[Dramatic music]
[Grunting]
Karen, cover your ears!
[Loud electric squeaking sound]
Get Murakami alive,
you can kill Fujimoto!
Fujita-san, Hashimoto-san,
Negotiations have failed.
It's started.
I knew it!
They're trapped.
All in one place, let's go.
[Maniacal giggling]
What the hell are you doing?
Find them!
How can we even see this? There aren't
cameras in the woods.
God's eye view, I paid for it.
Paid? How much?
- I don't know, a few days, a few years.
No way.
[Cash register]
[Bell rings]
[Stabbing sound]
[Sound of sword exit]
If you want power,
call on me and offer me your life.
Yoshihara's moving. Now's the chance!
- Wait, what are you thinking?
Kill the queen bee,
the rest will be easy.
[Music]
[Gunshot]
[Blood splatter]
[Gunshots]
[Screaming]
Hey!
[Gunshot]
Open the door!
- Yes, ma'am.
You go around the back.
- OK.
It doesn't open!
[Impact sound]
Hurry up and open it!
- Yes, ma'am.
[Gunshot]
How the hell do they have guns in Japan?
They must have paid for it.
Satsuki, we have to run.
This is our chance.
- What are you talking about?
[Sword slashing sound]
Murakami-san, long time no see.
Are you guys going after Yoshihara too?
Yes. We've watched your meeting.
Wait.
Why don't we work together.
That way, we can be sure
to kill Yoshihara.
Sorry, but we can't trust you.
Because you look down on everyone.
You'll betray us.
And...
I saw what happened this morning.
We'll never be able to work together.
See ya.
Good-bye.
You...!
Ah!
[Slashing]
[Sound of sword exit]
[Blood splatter]
[Shocked yelps]
Hashimoto-san?
Sumida-san!
I'm sorry, you're right, let's go.
[Shrieks, gunfire]
[Screaming woman]
[Gunshot]
- It hurts!
- Sorry!
No, there's only the three of us left.
Sumida...
Always defying me, what an abomination!
This is what Murakami was talking about:
It seems that you can charge your
lifetime to get weapons and add functions.
I'm going to charge as much as I can.
Murakami, Fujimoto and Sumida,
I'm gonna make mincemeat out of them.
I'll be the one with the last laugh.
[Laughter]
[Laughter continues]
Uh...
I killed her.
- You had to.
You did nothing wrong.
I guess. I still killed her.
If you didn't, Hashimoto would have
killed us both. Karen...
Yeah, I guess but...
You saved my life Karen. Thank you.
Yeah.
- All right, so...
What do we do now?
They blocked the cameras.
- Of course.
We should rest.
[Plants rustling]
[Wildlife sounds]
Sumida-san...
We don't know
when they're going to attack us
so, you might want to stop drinking.
[Punching sound]
[Grunt]
Do you want to die right now?
You let her kill Makoto!
Not true!
She was already dead!
[Gun cocks]
I'm so sorry!
I'm gonna get revenge on your behalf.
Murakami...
Fujimoto!
I'll get them myself!
[Gunshot]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san, please,
will you forgive us?
[Spooky music]
N...
O
W...
A...
Y
[Startled gasp]
Karen, are you okay?
I had a dream.
- A nightmare?
Kokkuri-san was saying that
she won't forgive us
Really? Well then...
We are gonna have to take
Kokkuri-san down too.
It's a god, Satsuki.
I'll fight whatever is in my way.
I always have and I won't stop now.
If it was me?
I don't know, you?
I don't know.
You don't know...
Satsuki?
- Nothing.
[Breathes] Tomorrow, let's go to
the shrine, maybe find something.
Yeah, then...
[Gunshot]
How are you doing, ladies?
Yoshihara-san?
You look like a spry old lady
after all that activity.
I'll get some rest after I create
flower arrangements with your heads!
Don't let them get away!
They're going to die here.
[Gunshot]
Murakami!
[Gunfire]
You killed Makoto!
[Gunfire continues]
Karen, come on.
[Gunshots]
Go after her!
- Yes, ma'am.
Karen.
[Gunshot]
Sumida...! Damn you!
[Bell rings]
What are you,
why are you doing this?
Answer me!
Seven people are remaining...
Wait! Please.
[Gun loads]
Don't move!
Just end this, kill me already.
You are not gonna fight me?
[Sighs] Thank goodness!
I didn't know what I'd do
if you put up a fight.
You're not going to try to kill me?
Of course not.
Hey, don't move.
I'm taking you to Sumida-san now.
Sumida-san?
You don't want the blood on your hands
so, you leave the killing up to her, huh?
You cannot say that... like I'm bad.
I'm just taking orders, from Sumida-san.
She's the one who's doing this, I'm not...
the bad guy.
You're not the bad guy because
you never decide anything for yourself.
You don't do anything you don't even
try to do anything.
You're the most pathetic coward.
How about you? You have been hiding
behind Murakami this whole time.
She's protecting you and that's the only
reason you're alive.
Yeah, you're right.
I should just kill myself.
You will die.
Don't worry. Just wait.
Hello? How are you, Sumida-san?
You should be careful with those
knock-off phones.
Huh?
[Explosion]
[Collapses]
I heard the batteries can explode.
[Gunshots]
Satsuki, I'm flashing a light in 5 seconds.
Be ready.
[Gunshots continue]
[Ringing]
[Slashing]
[Gun cocks]
[Gunfire]
[Upbeat music]
[Gunshots]
Back me up.
[Yelling]
It's the end.
[Yelling]
[Gunshots]
[Yelling]
[Gun cocks]
Go on, shoot, pull the trigger.
I'll certainly kill this one.
Karen, do it, that way you will win.
Give me the gun!
You just lost your chance.
As I saw it, in the end I win.
So, which one dies first?
Can I just ask one thing?
What, now?
Why are you so mean to me?
What did I do?
This is exactly why. You always like
"I don't understand, I don't understand."
That is so annoying.
That made me exhausted.
You fucking made me tired,
you understand that?
All right, too late for last words.
[Gun clicks]
[Yelps]
[Stabbing sound]
[Blood dripping]
Goddamn foreigner...
[Slashing]
You can stop, I get it.
[Collapses]
[Brushes rustle]
[Wildlife noises]
[Tense music]
It was worth to try.
Yeah.
Karen?
Karen, I know you are tired but...
help me make some food?
Sure.
Can you cut the vegetables?
Yeah, sure.
[Slicing sounds]
[Clinking]
Thank you for the meal.
- Thank you for the meal.
Tomorrow, after we go to
the shrine, let's go home.
So, let's rest tonight.
Yeah.
Good night Karen.
Good night Satsuki.
[Wildlife sounds]
Good morning.
What were you praying for?
Good morning.
Nothing, just usual habit, I guess.
[chuckles]
You know, gods don't really do anything.
It's up to us, when we want something,
to fight for it all the way.
We make our own fates, right?
Wise words.
[Bell rings]
Bitch, we get it.
We should probably
get this started.
[Gun clicks]
[Gunshot]
[Rocking music]
[Arrows whizz by]
[Gunshot]
You're too sweet, Karen!
Do you really think
I'm going to fall for this trap?
[Cash register]
[Whoosh]
[Gunfire]
[Cash register]
[Kicking sound]
It's an added function.
I can use a stolen phone
to remotely control my own.
[Beeping]
[Click]
Hey, are you taking me for a fool?
Do you really think you can kill me?
[Sword clinks]
[Sword swooshes]
[Grunts]
[Sword clinks]
[Laughs]
[Clinking]
I'll tell you something:
As Hashimoto witnessed
and Yoshihara suspected...
That first murder, I did it.
[Laughs]
[Clinking]
As I told you, you are so naive.
[Running sounds]
The night we did Kokkuri-san,
I was already aware
of the app's existence.
That's why I tried it on...
the one who was in the next room.
Good morning. You're up early.
Good morning.
[Laughs]
I just wanted everyone
to kill each other afterwards.
Are you kidding?
Ask Kokkuri-san where that thing is?
"Kokkuri-san, please come and save us!"
Are you nuts?
Oh, she's here.
She said there're 16 of us remaining.
Only one will survive.
So, if you kill the others,
you can get out of here?
Are you going to try?
Everyone was after me.
[Swoosh]
It didn't work out.
What a pity.
The first two women who attacked you,
I planned that too.
I thought if I saved you,
you'd believe me unconditionally.
Liar!
[Swoosh sound]
[Laughing]
[Clinking]
[Punch sound]
[Slashing]
[Blood dripping]
[Clinking]
[Slap]
You were the most suitable person to
exploit, because you are so naive and stupid.
Fuck you!
There is no room for friendship
when it comes to life or death.
[Punch]
[Metal slapping on flesh]
[Clinking]
[Heavy body punch]
It's over.
This is a great place to die, isn't it?
It was fun, Karen.
[Cash register]
You haven't been planning
this all along, have you?
[Heavy gun blast]
[Blood splash]
Seriously?
Breaking that statue is blasphemous...
[Drops sword]
Satsuki... Satsuki...
You win, Karen.
I know.
Thank you.
My... friend...
[Falls over]
[Music]
[Wildlife sounds]
Are you alright?
[Slash sound]
[Splattering]
Hi honey?
- Hello? Karen?
I'm sorry I couldn't come home
yesterday, there was no signal and
I hope you weren't worried.
I'm coming home right now.
Already? It's a two-day trip,
you're supposed to...
Come home yesterday.
No Karen, you left yesterday.
Are you all right?
Yeah. Looks like the fox tricked me.
Oh, that's a funny phrase you learned.
Are you getting along with everyone?
A lot happened, I'll tell you
when I get home.
I love you.
[Car engine revs]
[Heavy impact]
[Tires screech]
[Spooky music]
[Fast tempo rock music]
western table turning in seance,
Kokkuri-san was introduced by American
crew members
who landed on
the Ise Peninsula in 1884.
You probably know this game,
maybe even played it.
To play, you write yes, no,
the numbers zero to nine
all the letters, and draw a gate
on a paper.
The fox spirit would be summoned and
possess the coin.
Participants asked questions, and
it would move the coin to give answers.
It's said if you break Kokkuri-san's
rules you can become possessed yourself.
Some kill themselves and some try to
kill others.
[music]
Hold on there buster!
[Gunshot]
[Gun loads, fires]
[Gasping]
Gotcha!
[Slashing sound]
[Music]
[Clapping]
Hey, you know what?
My son started violin lessons last week.
- Good morning.
- Ah, good morning.
And then...
You don't need to listen to this, Karen.
Good morning.
- Good morning
It's just a lot of complaining, trying to
one-up each other.
- Yeah.
Good morning.
- Good morning, Ms. Murakami!
- Your English is as fluent as ever.
- Is it?
What were you talking about?
Well...
About how everyone's been working
so diligently this morning.
[Laughter]
They didn't get a word. Oh, what's wrong?
Oh nothing. Uh, what were you guys talking
about?
Um, just that Japan's globalness still
has a long way to go.
- Right, Ms. Murakami?
- Yes?
[Laughter] Yes?
What is it about?
- You weren't listening?
- Sorry.
Thanks for always helping
me out by the way.
With what?
I've been in Japan for the past six months
and I still don't understand the language.
Like back there I was just making things
awkward like I always do
and you always help out
with that kind of stuff.
Nah. Hmm, you're very mindful
of others Karen.
Very Japanese.
- [laughs] Really?
I think you try to adjust to people,
put them before you.
In Japanese we say "enryo".
- Oh. [Chuckles] I guess...
You need to learn to
communicate with them.
How else will they
learn to like you?
I mean, I've been praying
to the deity every morning.
The deity doesn't do anything.
We control our fate.
I don't know, you never
go to the shrine, pray?
Nah, I don't believe in God.
I just think uh it's all pointless though.
It's all how we choose to use it.
I should work harder on my Japanese.
Good luck!
I'll see you later. "Matane".
Yeah, uh, "Matane".
[Music]
I'm home!
Hey, you're home early!
The meeting was quite quick.
- Oh, nice.
Let me help.
Thank you.
Looks delicious!
- Tofu dish?
- Yes.
Delicious.
Oh...
I did this today. Here, at the river.
Show me. Ah that's nice.
[laughs] I'm a photographer.
- Mmm.
Oh, what's that?
- Yeah, it's this cat.
I think I see it like a lot.
It's always at the Red River.
Yeah, wow.
And then, um...
Wait, this one...
Oh, wow.
[dishes clink]
[dish washing sounds]
my husband's off...
- We made inari sushi together.
- Nice!
- With your husband!
- Right.
Fujimoto-san?
- Good morning.
- Good morning, everyone.
Good morning, Fujimoto-san.
What happened to the community survey?
That deadline passed long ago and
we haven't heard anything from you.
Oh, I have to check with
my husband about that, because...
What, can't you do it on your own?
Oh, there was this kanji
that I didn't understand.
Yeah, yeah. You've been
here five, six months. I get it.
Is it about the community survey?
She can't read or write
without her husband.
That's inconvenient!
[laughter]
I don't know how well your life in Japan
will work out as it is.
Just because you came
from a different country
doesn't mean we will give
you a special treatment.
Oh...
- You know that, right?
Yeah, I'm sorry about that.
You're a grown up.
- Yes.
- Fujimoto-san!
- Ah, good morning.
Did you see Yoshihara-san?
Do you know where she is?
She was not at the community center.
Oh, she was there until a minute ago.
- Any idea where she was headed?
- You really didn't know?
- I'm not sure
- Did she say something about the survey?
Um, yeah, she scolded
me about not turning it in
- She said Yoshihara-san was angry.
- Seriously?
She decides everything on her own.
Who she thinks she is?
We need to speak to Yoshihara-san.
If you see her, can
you speak to her?
Yeah, uh, OK.
Okay. Oh, see you later.
Okay.
Hello?
- Oh, this?
It's a survey to schedule volunteers for
the community cleaning.
Hmmm, you probably talked to
Sumida-san and Hashimoto-san.
They probably fought with
Yoshihara-san about who will clean when.
You didn't turn it in yet?
- [chuckles] No.
Yoshihara-san got pretty mad at me.
[gasps] Whatever. She is whack. [Laughs]
Satsuki, I've been here
for the past six months
and I feel like I'm just not getting
along with anyone.
Honestly, I'm kind of alone, and...
I don't know, sometimes I wonder if I'm
just gonna be like this forever, and...
You're so dramatic. Just keep having
conversations, live from day to day,
I like living in Japan, it's just,
I don't know, I get intimidated
by the other ladies, and...
[sigh] It's just me, so stupid.
You don't have to try so hard.
They're not worth it.
Do you plan to go camping?
- Yes.
- Really? I haven't decided yet.
- Good morning.
- Good morning! [Laughter]
Thank you.
Are you planning to participate?
"Sanka..." Oh, participate. Um, what,
in what?
Well, uh... camping.
Next week.
- Oh! Is it, oh.
You're scouting the camping place
for the kids next month. Oh, that's nice.
Sorry, slower?
Oh, um, you're going to scout
the camping place, right?
That's, um, understood.
That's nice.
Understood?! [Laughter]
Good!
You're going to the scout, huh?
Oh, to the kids camping. No, I don't
even know what just happened. Are you?
Well, I work from home.
[Trash bag crinkles]
So, staying over is a bit hard.
Staying over?
Oh, they use their kids
as an excuse, and...
One-night getaway to relax and have fun
for housewives busy with
their husbands and chores,
What? Satsuki, you know
I don't speak Japanese...
Murakami-san,
Do you have to talk like that?
We all had a serious
discussion about the decision.
In front of this dump?
I'm terribly sorry about that,
Chairperson Yoshihara!
So, you're not participating?
On hold for now.
I may join you
when my current job is done.
Hmm, OK.
How about you, Fujimoto-san?
Oh, um...
I heard you just said you are coming
but I understand that
you don't want to stay
over with us. I get it.
No, it's not that. Um,
I just, I, I wasn't sure.
You answer yes without knowing?
You really need to be careful
or you definitely get scammed
She said yes without knowing
what you were talking about.
Really? [Laughter]
Don't worry Karen. Those scammers
only go to a dumb old lady's house.
What's wrong...?
Did you receive a call that
your grandson was in an accident?
I have a son, not a grandson...!
Stop this funny business!
So, what is your decision,
Fujimoto-san?
Oh, um, I should probably
ask my husband first.
Again? You really can't make
a decision on your own, huh.
[Laughs]
- I'm home.
- Hey honey.
I actually want to
talk to you about something.
What is it? Sounds important.
So, I don't know, I got invited by the
other women at the community meeting
to this camping thing, and...
It's an overnight stay so I don't
know how comfortable I am with that.
[Laughs] That's great, sounds like fun.
Oh, uh, yeah, but it's pretty far.
It's two days. I'm staying over, you know
I don't speak Japanese that well, and...
I don't know.
- [Laughs]
What, you'll be going with the other
housewives, right?
- Yeah...
- You'll be fine, you should go.
[Music]
You're nervous it seems.
- I guess.
- You don't get along with them?
- I want to get along with them,
it's just not working out.
Is she going, one... the one who speaks
English very well.
She's your friend, right?
- Oh, Satsuki, yeah.
She said she has work,
I don't think she will.
I see.
Oh wait, isn't that tough lady
the committee chairwoman?
I thought she spoke English
pretty well
Yoshihara-san? She doesn't like me.
- Ah.
I see... Yeah.
Yeah, I heard she likes to complain a lot.
Don't worry, in Japan
some people are like that.
But that is just because they
expect better, it's probably not personal.
Maybe. But, I mean, I hope that's what it
is
Hmm. Well maybe if you go on this
trip you'll find out
it's probably nothing,
and you'll learn Japanese too.
[Laughs] I mean, I do need to
learn Japanese, but, I don't know, like,
what if I go and then make things
awkward like I always do,
and it just makes everything worse?
Uh, don't be nervous.
Oh, this camping place, it's called
Kasekimura right?
I think so. Yeah, I couldn't look it up
because I didn't know the kanji.
Oh yeah. I think it's actually well known.
Oh, here, I found it.
Ah, it's a very old traditional
Japanese village.
It's very beautiful, you can take very
beautiful pictures there Karen
Maybe you should
consider going. Hmm?
[Music]
So, you'll come. OK, Good.
Yes, good.
Oh Karen, Good morning.
Satsuki, I never see you around here,
what's going on?
Well, I got my work done, so
I came to tell Yoshihara-san
I would join the trip this weekend.
That's awesome! Oh my gosh!
What about you, have you
finally consulted your husband?
Oh, uh, yeah, uh,
I'd love to participate.
Oh, oh okay. Well, I'll see you then.
Yes, I will see you.
So, you decided to go?
- Yeah.
Satsuki's going so I think it's going to
be good now.
And it'll be a chance for me to make
friends, learn Japanese, like you said.
So...
- Satsuki Murakami, right?
It seems like we have a lot
to thank her for.
Yeah, Satsuki's really cool I'll
introduce you to her
She's smart, she's funny, she's really
honest.
I mean, she can be kind of rough when she
talks sometimes but...
I wish I was a bit more
like her sometimes.
That's up to you!
- [Laughs]
if you put your mind to it, mmm?
You don't have to keep wishing.
It's funny, Satsuki says stuff like that
all the time.
Thanks honey.
- Be careful. Have fun.
[Music]
I'll see you later.
[Sound of train passing]
I can just barely
get a cell phone signal.
It's gonna be tough if anything happens.
What?
- What's wrong?
Oh... Nothing.
Ladies! We don't have it all day. Move!
[Groans]
She's yelling.
[Nature sounds]
[Rain]
Terrible weather.
I knew it would rain.
Oh hi, are you from this village?
Uh, no, no, no, no,
I'm with the group.
Oh, you're with, you're with us?
Oh yes, yes. Oh, okay my name is,
my name is Kadowaki.
Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you. Karen Fujimoto.
Uh, sorry, my English, uh,
is not very good.
Oh no, that's fine.
Um, so what do you do for a living?
Um, well...
Uh, his wife is hardcore
career woman so he doesn't work
and lays around all day at home.
In Japanese we call these guys "himo".
[chuckles] That's nice.
You just said something
bad about me, didn't you?
It's your imagination. [Laughs]
[Wildlife noises]
This looks like it's about to collapse.
I'll take a picture.
Hey! What are you doing?!
What?
I heard you bad-mouthing.
I wasn't bad-mouthing.
What are you talking about?
What's happening? Why me?
He could be dangerous!
So, this village has a fox deity,
Orinari-san
She is the guardian of this village.
If you offend her,
she will punish you and drag you to hell.
Wait did you say fox?
- Some people in this village
can be so fanatic. I know they
were being disrespectful,
but I don't know if he
needs to be that crazy.
[Wildlife, rain noises continue]
- I'm so hungry!
- It was weird.
He was holding a sickle,
it was really annoying.
I want revenge.
- Right
- Yes.
- What should we do?
- Well...
Oh, you don't say this one...
OK, U-Me-...
- Shi?
- Shu, Shu...
- It's just like...
- There was a play just like...
[muttering] Ume-Shu.
[Claps] Let's do Kokkuri-san!
Ah, good idea!
OK, we need a sheet of paper and a pen.
Kokkuri-san?
Mmm, it's a game where
you talk to the spirit, mmm,
Kokkuri-san, you put letters on a paper.
- Oh! A Ouija board.
But,
why do they want to play that?
Well,
Kokkuri-san summons a fox demon.
I think she wants to do it for revenge,
because the guy told her she will go to
hell
Wait, a fox spirit...
That guy at the temple said...
Would that... curse us?
- No [laughs].
It's only in your head.
I played it as kid.
Usually, it's a kids game but I guess
we're among young souls. [Chuckles]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
How many times per week
does Fukuda-san have sex?
[Laughter]
It says seven times!
You're so active!
Please return to the gate.
Satsuki?
I don't want to translate this.
Just questions about money
and sex. What else?
Hey, join us!
We're having a good time here.
What? Drunkenly interacting
with Kokkuri-san?
That sounds like fun. Very funny.
- Oh... [nervous laughter] Uh...
- Let's do it!
- Okay
- Finger, here, yeah?
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
we invite you to come visit us.
If you are in our presence
please move the coin to "YES".
Now Kokkuri-san has
to understand English...
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san
how many men is Karen Fujimoto
currently seeing?
Oh, that's not true.
That was clearly a deliberate move.
If you have a problem with that,
you should join us.
Please go back to the gate.
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san, thank you.
Please go back to the gate.
Yes.
Thank you. You shouldn't
release your finger
uh, until the game is completely
over.
I guess now you're
cursed by the fox Karen.
You're always pestering Karen.
What's your problem?
Elitism? Racism?
Or are you jealous because your
husband's salary is lower than Karen's?
What? It's not your business.
I'm doing my best to help
Ms. Fujimoto get along with us.
It was just a little friendly prank,
you know that? Yeah, yeah.
Don't believe that Karen.
There is a word for
sneaky bitches like them.
We call them... Queen Bee!
What is your problem?!
You may be bi-sexual and
want to sleep with your friend. Right?
You, old-fashioned homophobe!
Oh, did I get that right?
Times may change,
but what's weird remains weird.
Don't get cocky.
[Slams bottle]
Hey, hey, look!
From the shrine's offertory box.
The shrine box!?
It's said this would make it
more effective.
Satsuki, what's going on?
It's from the shrine box.
Isn't that the donations?
This is gonna be fun!
You sound nervous.
You can leave if you want.
You've got to be kidding.
You invited me.
Besides,
I've got a question I'd like to ask.
What is it?
Who will end up the most
miserable among us?
That sounds interesting.
- Let's ask the deity about it.
- Yeah!
Get out of my way!
- Your finger, put it there.
- But it's from the donations...
[Slaps table]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
we invite you to come visit us.
If you are in our presence, please move
the coin to 'YES'.
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san,
who among us
will end up most miserable in life?
[Huffing]
[Loud grunts]
[Popping sound]
[Surprised yelling]
- Blood...
- Are you alright?
- Wipe!
- What's going on?
[Startled yelling]
That looks painful! Are you OK?
Are you alright?
It doesn't hurt, actually.
I'm not injured.
[Napkin paper rattles]
Is this blood?
- Creepy...
- Oh my god, it's...
It's disgusting.
I'm losing interest.
I'm going back to my room.
It's on your face.
- Karen...
- Satsuki?
- Karen... Let's go.
- OK.
[Creaking]
[Breathing]
[Music]
[Shrieks]
[Gasps]
[Creepy music]
[Wildlife noises]
She's dead.
Seriously?
Call the police!
Huh? I have no signal.
- I also have no signal.
- Why not?!
How do I know?
It was working until yesterday!
- Karen, go find someone from the town.
Okay.
- I will go too.
Someone, someone, help! Oh my god.
Oh my gosh, why?
What's going on?
Karen! You got that way.
- Okay.
Someone! Hello!
[Panting]
[Bell rings]
Oh, excuse me? Um,
could you please help, uh...
Can you help us?
Sixteen people are remaining.
Sixteen? Um, this is very
important, somebody is dead, uh,
Dead, Uh, dead, a woman is dead.
Satsuki, um, there's someone...
Um, she was just here.
You saw her too.
What is happening?
Yoshihara-san, please calm down.
I don't think yelling is...
Shut up! How could you be so calm?
A person is dead!
We all know that.
That's what I'm trying to figure out!
Just shut up for a second.
Anything?
- We checked all around but there's no one.
I'm getting a strange feeling here.
I feel like someone's watching us.
Like a war zone.
She said it's like a war zone.
It might be dangerous to go too far.
War zone, are you military or...
- See?
At the same time, she really
loves survival games.
So, whoever did this
might be watching us now, or...
You mean there's
a serial killer watching us?
Maybe.
If we had any weapons...
It's that woman with the mask!
She set the whole thing up.
If we can get her...
Calm down.
We know that.
It's too dangerous to search blindly
under the current circumstances.
So, you all saw her too?
- Yeah.
She suddenly... appears.
At the same time, gone like a ghost.
So not human?
Fox mask, fox...
Kokkuri-san?
- Are you kidding?
Ask Kokkuri-san where that thing is?
"Kokkuri-san, please come to help us!"
Are you nuts?
Oh, she's here!
[Spooky sounds]
[Gasps]
There are still 16 of you remaining.
Make sure you offer one sacrifice
within "3 moments".
If you want power,
call on me and offer your life.
Only one of you will survive.
Huh?
Wait! Everybody chase her!
Chase her!
Hurry up!
[Spooky music]
[Wildlife sounds]
What the hell was that?
I think the fox deity's cursing us.
Satsuki, do you think it's
because of yesterday,
like the deity cursing us,
or I don't know...
That's something ridiculous.
It's probably some crazy people
from the village like the guy
from yesterday at the shrine.
I guess it's possible
Does it even matter?
- Does it even matter?
Whatever it is, the question is
how we're going to survive.
Right?
I guess.
She said that 16 are remaining and,
there will be only one survivor, right?
It means if you kill all the others,
you can get out of here?
You're gonna try that?
No way.
That won't do any good,
just use common sense.
Right.
Where are you going?
None of your business.
We're going to go pick some flowers.
You don't know what's going to happen,
so, it's dangerous to go alone, right?
Yoshihira-san, maybe we should
take some time to rest too.
Yeah, you're right.
We are all quite stressed.
That sounds good.
Let's take some rest.
We don't know what's going to happen.
After you rest, can you explore
more about the app?
OK.
I'm restricted without a computer here,
but I'll see what I can do.
I will see you later then.
Well then...
[Wildlife noises]
[Sighs]
How did this happen?
[Exhales]
[Gasps]
[Dramatic music]
Karen!
[Impact sound]
We need to go!
[Dramatic music continues]
[Brushes rustle] [Gasping]
Shit! They're close. Karen,
give me your phone.
[gasps] What?
Come on!
- What?
[Grass rustling]
[Dramatic music]
[Grunting]
[Impact sound]
[Metallic clanking sound]
[Repeats]
[Cheering]
Me?
[Bell rings]
[Gong sound]
It's time.
[Slashing sound]
[Blood spattering]
[Collapses]
Karen, behind you!
[Dramatic music resumes]
[Grunts]
[Slashing sounds]
[Cracking]
[Groans, collapses]
Come on!
[Heavy breathing]
Hey...
- What?
You killed her?
If I didn't kill her,
she would have killed me.
How did this happen?
I... I just don't...
If I didn't kill her, that
fox face could have killed me.
But we could have tried to talk to her,
we could have, we could have...
I don't know, why kill? Why?
Why? I did what I had to.
Because of that we are alive
So, it's really the last one surviving is
the only one who can get out?
Yoshihara definitely
believes that and...
Look, as people die, more features
get unlocked in the app.
She may be right.
What?
I'll check out the new functions.
You should probably try to find a weapon.
Okay, all right.
Hey, it doesn't look like
the train is coming.
What?
What's going on?
A strike, perhaps?
No doubt about it.
It's reacting to him.
He is also a target,
although he wasn't there.
Well, we don't have any choice.
He stayed in another building yesterday.
He doesn't know anything.
That's convenient.
[panicked yelling]
[Pan swooshes]
[Gravel crackles]
[Yelling continues]
Satsuki?
Are you looking for someone?
[Slash] [Gasping]
[Dramatic music]
[Phone buzz]
Satsuki, help!
- I see you. Take the next turn.
- You run around too much.
- Wait, wait!
This is crazy, can we just talk for
a second?
Talk?
- I don't understand what you say.
I have nothing against you,
I'm sorry.
It's the only way.
[Impact sound]
[Grunts]
Hah, teamwork!
Did you just use me as bait?
Well, you know. Help me pick her up.
[Tape tear sound]
Hello, Yoshihara-san?
How are you doing?
Yes, you sound fine, too, Murakami-san.
[Water sloshing]
I have good news for you.
Apparently, every time one of us dies,
a new function is added to the app.
Every time one of us dies...
It's added at the same time.
Don't you think
that's a fair and good rule?
True.
Good research.
Hey.
When can I see you?
I'd like to hear more about it.
This game apparently has a time limit.
And I don't like to be lazy,
so, I'm coming to see you now.
Prepare your neck for my blade
and wait for me.
Alright.
I'll make sure
to be ready to welcome you.
I can't wait.
Now, I'll pass the phone to your friend.
See you later.
[Electric buzz]
[Screams]
[Line disconnects]
Why?
- What now?
Why did you kill her? You didn't need to.
I told you, it's kill or be killed.
I just don't understand, why can't we just
talk and work together?
If we work together, we could find
a way to get us all out, fight together,
I don't know. [Gasps]
I can't do this. I don't want to see
people getting hurt.
And I definitely
don't want to kill anyone.
You are so naive.
Well...
I have an appointment with Yoshihara.
Do you want to come?
Stop talking about talking and do it.
[Phone pings]
I'm gonna kill you,
weak little wimp!
[Grunts]
[Growling]
[Weapon clinks]
[Blow to face]
[Kicking sound]
[Stab sound]
[Blood splash]
Hello, Makoto?
I just killed one.
Got it.
Kaori,
I'm gonna drive one towards you.
Wait there.
Now! [Gunshot]
One less.
There's a chance someone is watching us.
Let's move.
OK.
I've got something. Come join me.
OK.
Hey, kept man!
[Panicked yelling]
You're a valuable asset.
Come with me.
Alright...
wiretapping and spy cam...
Every time one of us dies,
we get more functions...
"Offer your life"...
It's so interesting, isn't it?
A system that encourages
people to kill each other?
It's like a smartphone game
with a billing system.
I think it's a trap to try to get us
to all kill each other and then
in the end it's just going to be
all of us.
If we don't kill each other
and we keep running around,
that fox mask comes to kill us.
"3 moments"?
Does that mean three hours?
Judging from when the first person died...
You might be right.
Oh, I see now...
I remember that we saw the slot reel
before the time ran out.
It would be horrible
if every time the time runs out
a random person dies.
We will be in trouble if someone
runs away or hides.
[Screaming from phone]
Hold on there buster!
[Gunshot]
[Gun reloads, fires]
[Slashing sound]
[Giggles]
I think it's alright.
Sumida and the others
are buying us a lot of time.
Right, only If the remaining time is
carried over to the next time limit.
I wonder who's behind all this.
I don't want to play their game.
Yeah, if we keep killing each other,
it's only going to make him happy.
We need to stop this craziness.
If we work together
we could find a way we could all get out
She's right. Let's call a temporary truce.
We could start killing each other,
after we've done some research.
Right.
The best option is
we all make it out alive,
So, we can work together
Truce then.
- I'm counting on you.
- Leave it to me.
We'll get through this together.
I need you to tell me something.
What?
How were you able to monitor
Fujimoto-san on the run?
You can't just spy
on any phone, can you?
[Laughs]
I told you already.
It's a game with a billing system.
If you put your life on it a little more,
you might get a new function.
I see.
Okay, let's get to it.
[Claps]
[Dramatic music]
[Grunting]
Karen, cover your ears!
[Loud electric squeaking sound]
Get Murakami alive,
you can kill Fujimoto!
Fujita-san, Hashimoto-san,
Negotiations have failed.
It's started.
I knew it!
They're trapped.
All in one place, let's go.
[Maniacal giggling]
What the hell are you doing?
Find them!
How can we even see this? There aren't
cameras in the woods.
God's eye view, I paid for it.
Paid? How much?
- I don't know, a few days, a few years.
No way.
[Cash register]
[Bell rings]
[Stabbing sound]
[Sound of sword exit]
If you want power,
call on me and offer me your life.
Yoshihara's moving. Now's the chance!
- Wait, what are you thinking?
Kill the queen bee,
the rest will be easy.
[Music]
[Gunshot]
[Blood splatter]
[Gunshots]
[Screaming]
Hey!
[Gunshot]
Open the door!
- Yes, ma'am.
You go around the back.
- OK.
It doesn't open!
[Impact sound]
Hurry up and open it!
- Yes, ma'am.
[Gunshot]
How the hell do they have guns in Japan?
They must have paid for it.
Satsuki, we have to run.
This is our chance.
- What are you talking about?
[Sword slashing sound]
Murakami-san, long time no see.
Are you guys going after Yoshihara too?
Yes. We've watched your meeting.
Wait.
Why don't we work together.
That way, we can be sure
to kill Yoshihara.
Sorry, but we can't trust you.
Because you look down on everyone.
You'll betray us.
And...
I saw what happened this morning.
We'll never be able to work together.
See ya.
Good-bye.
You...!
Ah!
[Slashing]
[Sound of sword exit]
[Blood splatter]
[Shocked yelps]
Hashimoto-san?
Sumida-san!
I'm sorry, you're right, let's go.
[Shrieks, gunfire]
[Screaming woman]
[Gunshot]
- It hurts!
- Sorry!
No, there's only the three of us left.
Sumida...
Always defying me, what an abomination!
This is what Murakami was talking about:
It seems that you can charge your
lifetime to get weapons and add functions.
I'm going to charge as much as I can.
Murakami, Fujimoto and Sumida,
I'm gonna make mincemeat out of them.
I'll be the one with the last laugh.
[Laughter]
[Laughter continues]
Uh...
I killed her.
- You had to.
You did nothing wrong.
I guess. I still killed her.
If you didn't, Hashimoto would have
killed us both. Karen...
Yeah, I guess but...
You saved my life Karen. Thank you.
Yeah.
- All right, so...
What do we do now?
They blocked the cameras.
- Of course.
We should rest.
[Plants rustling]
[Wildlife sounds]
Sumida-san...
We don't know
when they're going to attack us
so, you might want to stop drinking.
[Punching sound]
[Grunt]
Do you want to die right now?
You let her kill Makoto!
Not true!
She was already dead!
[Gun cocks]
I'm so sorry!
I'm gonna get revenge on your behalf.
Murakami...
Fujimoto!
I'll get them myself!
[Gunshot]
Kokkuri-san, Kokkuri-san, please,
will you forgive us?
[Spooky music]
N...
O
W...
A...
Y
[Startled gasp]
Karen, are you okay?
I had a dream.
- A nightmare?
Kokkuri-san was saying that
she won't forgive us
Really? Well then...
We are gonna have to take
Kokkuri-san down too.
It's a god, Satsuki.
I'll fight whatever is in my way.
I always have and I won't stop now.
If it was me?
I don't know, you?
I don't know.
You don't know...
Satsuki?
- Nothing.
[Breathes] Tomorrow, let's go to
the shrine, maybe find something.
Yeah, then...
[Gunshot]
How are you doing, ladies?
Yoshihara-san?
You look like a spry old lady
after all that activity.
I'll get some rest after I create
flower arrangements with your heads!
Don't let them get away!
They're going to die here.
[Gunshot]
Murakami!
[Gunfire]
You killed Makoto!
[Gunfire continues]
Karen, come on.
[Gunshots]
Go after her!
- Yes, ma'am.
Karen.
[Gunshot]
Sumida...! Damn you!
[Bell rings]
What are you,
why are you doing this?
Answer me!
Seven people are remaining...
Wait! Please.
[Gun loads]
Don't move!
Just end this, kill me already.
You are not gonna fight me?
[Sighs] Thank goodness!
I didn't know what I'd do
if you put up a fight.
You're not going to try to kill me?
Of course not.
Hey, don't move.
I'm taking you to Sumida-san now.
Sumida-san?
You don't want the blood on your hands
so, you leave the killing up to her, huh?
You cannot say that... like I'm bad.
I'm just taking orders, from Sumida-san.
She's the one who's doing this, I'm not...
the bad guy.
You're not the bad guy because
you never decide anything for yourself.
You don't do anything you don't even
try to do anything.
You're the most pathetic coward.
How about you? You have been hiding
behind Murakami this whole time.
She's protecting you and that's the only
reason you're alive.
Yeah, you're right.
I should just kill myself.
You will die.
Don't worry. Just wait.
Hello? How are you, Sumida-san?
You should be careful with those
knock-off phones.
Huh?
[Explosion]
[Collapses]
I heard the batteries can explode.
[Gunshots]
Satsuki, I'm flashing a light in 5 seconds.
Be ready.
[Gunshots continue]
[Ringing]
[Slashing]
[Gun cocks]
[Gunfire]
[Upbeat music]
[Gunshots]
Back me up.
[Yelling]
It's the end.
[Yelling]
[Gunshots]
[Yelling]
[Gun cocks]
Go on, shoot, pull the trigger.
I'll certainly kill this one.
Karen, do it, that way you will win.
Give me the gun!
You just lost your chance.
As I saw it, in the end I win.
So, which one dies first?
Can I just ask one thing?
What, now?
Why are you so mean to me?
What did I do?
This is exactly why. You always like
"I don't understand, I don't understand."
That is so annoying.
That made me exhausted.
You fucking made me tired,
you understand that?
All right, too late for last words.
[Gun clicks]
[Yelps]
[Stabbing sound]
[Blood dripping]
Goddamn foreigner...
[Slashing]
You can stop, I get it.
[Collapses]
[Brushes rustle]
[Wildlife noises]
[Tense music]
It was worth to try.
Yeah.
Karen?
Karen, I know you are tired but...
help me make some food?
Sure.
Can you cut the vegetables?
Yeah, sure.
[Slicing sounds]
[Clinking]
Thank you for the meal.
- Thank you for the meal.
Tomorrow, after we go to
the shrine, let's go home.
So, let's rest tonight.
Yeah.
Good night Karen.
Good night Satsuki.
[Wildlife sounds]
Good morning.
What were you praying for?
Good morning.
Nothing, just usual habit, I guess.
[chuckles]
You know, gods don't really do anything.
It's up to us, when we want something,
to fight for it all the way.
We make our own fates, right?
Wise words.
[Bell rings]
Bitch, we get it.
We should probably
get this started.
[Gun clicks]
[Gunshot]
[Rocking music]
[Arrows whizz by]
[Gunshot]
You're too sweet, Karen!
Do you really think
I'm going to fall for this trap?
[Cash register]
[Whoosh]
[Gunfire]
[Cash register]
[Kicking sound]
It's an added function.
I can use a stolen phone
to remotely control my own.
[Beeping]
[Click]
Hey, are you taking me for a fool?
Do you really think you can kill me?
[Sword clinks]
[Sword swooshes]
[Grunts]
[Sword clinks]
[Laughs]
[Clinking]
I'll tell you something:
As Hashimoto witnessed
and Yoshihara suspected...
That first murder, I did it.
[Laughs]
[Clinking]
As I told you, you are so naive.
[Running sounds]
The night we did Kokkuri-san,
I was already aware
of the app's existence.
That's why I tried it on...
the one who was in the next room.
Good morning. You're up early.
Good morning.
[Laughs]
I just wanted everyone
to kill each other afterwards.
Are you kidding?
Ask Kokkuri-san where that thing is?
"Kokkuri-san, please come and save us!"
Are you nuts?
Oh, she's here.
She said there're 16 of us remaining.
Only one will survive.
So, if you kill the others,
you can get out of here?
Are you going to try?
Everyone was after me.
[Swoosh]
It didn't work out.
What a pity.
The first two women who attacked you,
I planned that too.
I thought if I saved you,
you'd believe me unconditionally.
Liar!
[Swoosh sound]
[Laughing]
[Clinking]
[Punch sound]
[Slashing]
[Blood dripping]
[Clinking]
[Slap]
You were the most suitable person to
exploit, because you are so naive and stupid.
Fuck you!
There is no room for friendship
when it comes to life or death.
[Punch]
[Metal slapping on flesh]
[Clinking]
[Heavy body punch]
It's over.
This is a great place to die, isn't it?
It was fun, Karen.
[Cash register]
You haven't been planning
this all along, have you?
[Heavy gun blast]
[Blood splash]
Seriously?
Breaking that statue is blasphemous...
[Drops sword]
Satsuki... Satsuki...
You win, Karen.
I know.
Thank you.
My... friend...
[Falls over]
[Music]
[Wildlife sounds]
Are you alright?
[Slash sound]
[Splattering]
Hi honey?
- Hello? Karen?
I'm sorry I couldn't come home
yesterday, there was no signal and
I hope you weren't worried.
I'm coming home right now.
Already? It's a two-day trip,
you're supposed to...
Come home yesterday.
No Karen, you left yesterday.
Are you all right?
Yeah. Looks like the fox tricked me.
Oh, that's a funny phrase you learned.
Are you getting along with everyone?
A lot happened, I'll tell you
when I get home.
I love you.
[Car engine revs]
[Heavy impact]
[Tires screech]
[Spooky music]
[Fast tempo rock music]
