because a pangolin is a gift from God.

When the universe was created
the healers and animals were connected.
The pangolin holds a special place.
As a Venda child, you must spend
the first three months of life
inside your home.
Before you go out,
you must be vaccinated to keep you safe.
The healer takes the scale of a pangolin
and soaks it in water.
We will splash that water upon you,
like rain.
This will instill you
with humility and calm
so that when the pangolin
calls the thunder,
you will not be afraid.

a pangolin is a mystical creature.
It is a blessing to see one.
But if one drop
of a pangolin's blood touches the ground,
it will bring forth natural disasters.
