Please Don't Feed the Children (2024) Movie Script
[suspenseful music playing]
[radio static]
[woman] Very little is
known about the disease,
but what we do know is beyond disturbing.
Somehow, this virus is
turning people into cannibals.
[man] The evacuation of
key government officials
is continuing.
[man] We have suffered
millions of losses already.
It is believed children
are the carriers of the virus,
as most under 18 are
asymptomatic when bitten.
[indistinct radio chatter]
[man] Nothing conclusive
about the children,
but this wave of
misinformation has overtaken...
[man] Today, Phase 5 has been implemented,
which mandates the immediate
death of anybody infected.
There is no cure. There is no coming back.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Mary] At first, only adults were infected.
Our parents, teachers, families.
Most of them were wiped out.
Then, after a kid in Albuquerque
developed symptoms, we were rounded up
and placed into camps
where they could monitor us.
Turns out that one
percent of kids got sick.
The adults hated us for that.
They blamed us for the outbreak
and took away our freedom.
Some of us managed to escape,
but most were killed trying.
Getting out of the camps
was just the first step.
Escaping the country is the goal.
All I have to do is make it across.
[suspenseful music playing]
[helicopter flying overhead]
[helicopter departs]
[distant indistinct chatter]
[man] Please be aware
of unaccompanied minors.
For your safety, do not
approach these individuals.
If you encounter an unaccompanied minor,
please notify the nearest
officer immediately.
Please don't offer help,
please don't offer money,
and please don't feed the children.
[helicopter passes overhead]
[indistinct chatter]
[soldier] Who is this?
[teen] My mother.
Right. Wrist band.
[scanner beeps]
[indistinct chatter nearby]
[radio voice] Come in.
[distant dog barking]
Psst!
[distant reverse indicator beeping]
Hey!
One of the cars was unlocked.
I found a lollipop.
Good for you. Now get lost. Please.
Bet you wanna get on one of those buses.
If you have a valid ID, it ain't happening.
No shit.
And if you haven't got a valid ID,
you need an adult.
No adult, no bus.
[indistinct chatter]
Hey, I'm Jeffy.
Jeffy, if you don't
disappear in three seconds,
I'm gonna kick your ass.
And I'm gonna take your lollipop,
and I'm gonna eat it over your broken body.
Go away.
Do that.
[suspenseful music playing]
[distant engine revving]
[suspenseful music continues]
[object clatters]
-[soldier] Hey.
-Shit!
[intense music playing]
[engine starts]
-[sirens wailing]
[Jeffy] Hey, come on.
Get on, get on. Come on, come on.
[siren wailing]
[intense music playing]
[siren wailing]
[crickets chirping]
[door opens]
[Jeffy] Watch this.
[large electrical switch clunks]
[Jeffy] It's beautiful, isn't it?
You like it?
[Jeffy chuckles softly]
[Jeffy] Ahh! Home sweet home.
You're really lucky I was at the bus depot.
'Cause if I wasn't, you'll be toast.
By the way, I didn't catch your name.
Uh, I'm Mary.
[Jeffy] Allergic to peanut butter?
-No.
-All right. Good.
I'm gonna make this
special for you, all right?
-Yeah.
-[Jeffy] You like it?
Got you.
Make yourself comfortable.
Have a seat.
I mean, if you want.
We each have our own area.
This is mine.
[dramatic music playing]
[Jeffy] Hey, this is just for you.
Thanks.
You're welcome.
You can find tons of good
stuff in abandoned houses.
The thing is, you have to make sure
a house is really abandoned.
You have to watch a while.
And then, well, you
sneak in, get your goodies,
get yourself, you know, a couple of toys.
And then you...
-[door opens loudly]
[Ben] Well, that was a bust.
Can't believe the Paisanos
locked their fucking dumpster.
Who the fuck is that?
[Jeffy] This is Mary.
Found her at the bus station.
[Ben] The bus station? Ballsy.
[Vicky] Some kids got
busted there like two days ago.
Uh, look, I-I'll just go.
[Jeffy] That's Ben. That's Crystal.
That's Seth and, you
know, that's my sister, Vicky.
Look, you guys don't know
what I've been through, okay?
So don't test me.
Nobody test Ms. Free Sandwich.
Ooh, everybody, she's cool, guys.
Come on, take a breather.
We don't know that yet.
Now she knows our
place. If she gets caught,
she could turn us in.
You need to invest in a brush, babe.
Hey.
Unh-unh. Protocol.
Yeah?
The border?
That's where you're trying to take the bus?
Uh, it's safe for kids there.
Just give me back my stuff.
The fuck was that?
Hey. I've heard that.
Do you think it's true?
Yeah.
Why?
Because there's gotta
be somewhere out there
that's not just awful.
Seriously?
All right. That is
quintessential false logic.
FYI, I bet you went to private school.
Even if it is true, how
you gonna get there?
You heard of the Wall?
Fucker's 30 feet high.
La Migra's up there with
snipers day and night.
There's a tunnel.
Yeah?
Do tell.
A girl, she told me about
it when I was in a camp.
She's the one that gave me the map,
and she showed me where to go.
She got it from someone in the underground.
Hey, guys, we should go.
[Seth] Grow up, Jeffy. It's a fantasy.
[Ben] Yeah, I'm not convinced.
What else do you know?
[indistinct radio chatter]
To be honest, I'm not
really trying to convince you.
[Jeffy] What are you doing, Mary?
Look, thanks for the help, Jeffy, but...
it kind of seems like
you guys are full up, so.
Pretty much.
-[indistinct radio chatter]
-You get nabbed...
you gonna rat on us?
No.
[man] Units be advised, two runaways.
Boy, approximately 13
years of age and a girl, 16.
Last seen at the bus depot
heading towards the
abandoned community center...
[Ben] Get your shit. Let's go.
What the fuck did I tell you, Jeffy?
-[Jeffy] Go, go, go, go.
-Seth.
[Ben] Seth, keys.
Let's go.
-[man] Hey.
-[Ben] Go.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Seth] Where are we supposed to go now?
-We can't go back.
-[Mary] Seth, calm down.
We'll figure it out.
[suspenseful music playing]
[crickets chirping]
[indistinct radio chatter]
So, where exactly is this tunnel?
[indistinct radio chatter]
She doesn't know.
She just doesn't wanna be left behind.
Okay, go 25 South.
[Crystal giggles]
[crickets chirping]
[dramatic music playing]
[darkly dramatic music rises]
[Mary] Okay, right. When
I say run, we run, okay?
Okay.
Come on. Come on, come on.
-[distant dogs barking]
-Right, we're all right.
Run!
-[Sharp gasp] Teddy!
Come on, let's hide.
I need Teddy!
No. No, no, no.
Lily! Lily!
Lily! Lily!
[gunshot]
-Lily.
[indistinct radio chatter]
I'm sorry.
[Vicky] Who's Lily?
Um... my sister.
[indistinct radio chatter]
Jeffy's my brother.
-You can have him if you want.
-Hey, he's my brother, too.
If you're gonna give him away,
it's gotta be a family decision.
You know, I got a special skill.
Yeah? What's that?
I'm a master thief.
[laughter]
You are a master at bullshit, Jeffy.
Am I? Wait.
Look.
What the hell? That's mine.
-Told you.
-But can I see it?
I won't take it, I promise.
[indistinct radio chatter]
It's pretty.
[indistinct radio chatter]
It's a good luck charm.
[crickets chirping]
[Ben] Jeffy, grab the tool bag, all right?
[Jeffy] I got this.
All right, you know the drill.
[Jeffy] See if they have
taco-flavored Doritos.
Too loud, too risky. You know the rules.
[Ben] Let's go.
Go, go.
[crickets chirping]
Your name is Balthazar?
Yeah.
It's "Bally" for short.
I like your ink.
[clerk] Yeah?
[Ben] You draw that?
[clerk] I did, actually.
-It's great.
-Yeah.
[clerk] Yeah, it's pretty cool.
Um, do you want one? Do you have any?
[Ben] I don't have any.
My mom didn't let me.
[clerk] No?
[Ben] Yeah, I wanna get one. I actually...
Don't worry. We do this all the time.
If anything comes up,
we got a plan for that, too.
[soft laugh] Look at you, you badass.
[suspenseful music playing]
-This looks pretty.
-Thank you.
[conversation continues indistinctly]
-[Ben] Wrapped around?
-Wrapped around the heart.
[gasps] Shit.
[Mary gasps]
Hey, what are you...
Hey, what are you doing?
That's not part of the plan.
Oh, shit.
[engine starts]
Jeffy, hurry up!
[Jeffy] Shit!
Let go of me.
Vick, let's fucking go.
What the fuck are you doing?
-Hang up.
-Put the gun down.
-[Mary] Hang up.
-Drop it.
[clerk] I need a Wrangler
right now, the shop...
[gunshot]
[Ben] Let's go. Go, go.
[gunshot]
-[screams] Jeez! Fuck!
Fuck, let's go, let's go, let's go.
Fuck!
[car tires screeching]
-[gunshots]
-What the hell happened?
-Find a hospital now.
No, no, no, we can't.
They're gonna arrest us.
[overlapping panicked chatter]
He's bleeding fucking everywhere!
[engine hesitates]
[angry muttering]
Oh, fuck it.
Stay with Ben.
[Mary] He's not breathing
right. He needs help.
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
-Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck...
-[Ben] Stop. Crystal, stop.
I need to keep pressure on
it. You're bleeding everywhere.
-[Ben] Stop pressing on it.
-This is all your fault.
-[Ben] I'm fine.
-Bingo.
[Vicky] Are you serious?
-You got him shot.
-[All arguing]
[Jeffy] Wait, guys. Come on, stop.
[Seth] Hey, hey! Vicky, guys...!
That's a big house.
Probably abandoned, but it
could have supplies for Ben.
Come on.
[crickets chirping]
[ominous music plays]
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
-How we feeling?
-I don't know.
Hey, hey, let's go, let's go.
All right, Jeffy.
-Okay.
-You go right, okay?
Be quiet.
I will go left.
[Jeffy] Okay.
[Vicky] Jeffy, be careful.
[crickets chirping]
[Crystal] Here.
I'm just gonna put some pressure on it.
[suspenseful music playing]
[ominous music playing]
[tripwire snaps]
[alarm blaring]
-Oh, my God.
-[Panicked chatter]
[Jeffy] Guys. Guys, what now?
[panicked shouting]
[Seth] What the fuck is going on?
[panicked shouting]
[door locks clacking]
What do you want?
You can't be here.
He's shot, and he just needs some help.
I'm not supposed to take in children.
Please, you have to help him.
He looks all right to me.
I suppose I could take a look.
Are you a doctor or something?
[Clara] I'm a nurse.
But you have to leave
before my husband gets back.
He works nights, but he's a police officer.
-[Ben] No.
-There's no other options, Seth.
Yes.
Please.
Thank you.
[Ben] Are you fucking kidding me?
[Mary] We need help.
Well, aren't you the lovely bunch.
Come on.
[Ben] [screams]
Lost a heap of blood, minimal trauma.
You got lucky.
Still a high risk of
infection, so keep it clean.
[gasps]
I saw the news tonight.
Don't worry,
I won't say anything.
I know they blame orphans for everything.
[Ben] Yeah. Thanks.
Um, we gotta go, though, so...
Well, no, you need to rest a while.
I'll make some cookies.
How does that sound?
And don't worry.
My husband, he works late.
You got this, Ben.
You're a warrior.
[Ben] Oh, fuck off.
Let's bounce.
[Jeffy] Let's eat.
It smells really good.
You think when her cop husband comes home,
he's gonna give us fucking piggyback rides?
Seth's right.
We got to get the fuck out of here.
Let's take her car.
I saw car tracks.
Yeah, probably from her husband's cop car.
[Mary] No, look.
This is not a cop car.
[Jeffy] But she just helped us.
Yeah, but we need it more than she does.
[Seth] Go keep an eye on her.
You guys...
[Seth] Go, dipshit.
[Jeffy] Fine.
You guys look around.
Try find some keys, okay?
Nobody likes a sneak.
Want to help?
[Jeffy sighs]
Okay.
I like you.
You're nice.
What's the matter with you?
[Jeffy] I got cookies.
Hey, Ben.
[Ben] Just give me a cookie, okay?
[Clara] So let's bond.
Sorry it's only sweets.
It tastes funny.
It tastes funny?
Hmm. Thank you.
-[Ben] Thanks.
-Enjoy.
Lauren and Hank...
before he was transferred to Phase 5...
and had to put people
down like sick animals.
I still can't believe it came to that.
Wiped it out, though, huh?
[Clara] Yes.
And here we are.
Is Lauren here?
No.
She wasn't lucky like you.
We lost her.
Oh.
Yeah, so... [clears throat]
Thank you for the... the sweets
and helping our friend out.
Where are your car keys?
I beg your pardon?
For the car that you
have out there in the barn.
Yeah, sorry. Look, um...
we need some wheels, okay?
-[Clara] How dare you.
-Okay. Jeffy, kitchen.
-Guys, look around.
-Wait, what...
what are you doing?
[Ben] Look for the keys, please.
[Clara] No, don't touch...
Clara, over here.
[Ben] Crystal, no.
[Clara] Don't touch my things.
[Jeffy] Seth, check her pockets.
[Mary] Yeah, I don't think...
-[Crystal] Seth!
-Keys, Doc.
[Seth] All right. Hang on, Vick.
-[Clara] Relax.
-[Seth] Hey, hang on, hang on.
Hang on. Hang on, okay?
You're going to kill me for my car?
[Mary] No. Don't.
-[Vicky] You're staying.
-[Seth] Hang on.
-[Ben] Vicky, she knows the way.
-[Seth] No, no.
-We need to...
-I don't trust her, Ben.
Let's go home. Come on.
[Jeffy] Hey, we can't go back.
You can't just leave me here.
Seth, we can't leave Mary
here. She's one of us now.
No, she's not. We don't know her.
Everything has turned to shit
-since she showed up.
-Okay. All right. All right.
You win, Vick, okay?
-Come on. Sorry, Mary.
-[Vicky] Keys.
Keys. Come on.
-[Ben] Just relax, Vicky.
-[Vicky] Keys.
[Clara] Yes.
-Take them.
-Come on. Crystal, come on.
-[Ben] All right, let's go.
-[Crystal] I'm sorry.
[thudding]
[gunshot]
Terrible guests.
[Jeffy groans]
What the...
fuck?
-Hey, wake up.
-[Ben] What the fuck?
[Jeffy] She drugged us.
I think we're in the attic.
Hey, wake up, wake up.
[grunts]
-[Jeffy] Wake up.
It's bolted.
She fuckin' drugged us.
I said that.
But why?
She's pissed. Why do you think?
No.
She drugged us before
we tried to get her car.
She's obviously psycho.
How do we get out of here?
[Ben] Crystal, check the window.
There's too many layers.
Guys, where's Seth?
[suspenseful music playing]
Hello?
[suspenseful music playing]
Lovely.
Hank gave those to Lauren.
I noticed your ears weren't pierced.
I've replaced that dirty old string.
I bet you haven't felt
this pretty in a while.
Thanks.
I'm really sorry.
We shouldn't have tried to take your car.
Sit.
Don't worry. I won't bite.
We were just really desperate.
Belize, yes?
I saw the map in your backpack.
You should know, Border Patrol
closed the tunnel last week...
so you'll have to think of a new plan.
[sobs]
You stay put.
The police are looking for you.
[banging]
Hello?
[water splatters]
[banging]
Let me out!
Let me out!
[banging]
[door creaks open]
[suspenseful music playing]
[Seth] Hello?
[screaming]
Someone's here.
[Crystal] I'm scared something
bad happened to Seth.
We'll find him.
[knocks on door]
Are you here for your checkup?
I don't know. Does it look like I need one?
Never mind. It's too late for you.
[chuckling]
-It's good to see you, Clara.
-You too, Fitz. Come in.
I'll get you some cookies.
[Fitz] You haven't asked me why I'm here.
I supposed you'd get to it.
Yeah.
We had a little shootout
at the Quick Stop last night.
Got a winged store owner.
And a minor also took a bullet.
Horrible.
It makes me sick what
these wild kids get up to.
Those camps are too loose.
They should put them all in cages.
Mm-hmm.
Anyway, their car is
abandoned right down the road.
You're kidding.
They come knocking?
No, Fitz.
You don't think I'd have mentioned that?
Yeah.
[Clara] Oh, the hole.
Never noticed it before?
No. No, I haven't.
-Some detective you are.
-[Chuckles]
I'm gonna need to take a
look around your property.
[Clara] Of course.
Just a formality.
[Clara] Be my guest.
[rolling doors open]
[chuckles]
Wow.
So glad you kept it.
You ever take her out?
[Clara] Oh, Hank would kill me.
I turn her on every once in a while
to keep the battery from
dying, if I remember to.
[chuckles]
Kids used to love it when we took them out.
[chuckles]
Danny and Lauren were
like two peas in a pod.
All good kids.
[sighs]
-It's okay to be sad.
You know, sometimes I
wake up and I hear Linda
cooking breakfast with Danny.
And then, I...
I really wake up.
[exhales]
Come on.
[Jeffy, softly] Oh, shit.
Let's get his attention.
No fucking way.
Well, she's up to something.
I don't wanna find out what it is.
We can handle one lady.
[birds chirping]
-Jeffy, do not...
-[bang]
Radiator's playing up. I've got
someone coming to look at it.
Mm-hmm.
You love camps now, huh? Listen to me.
They will split us up, and
you will never see me again.
[Jeffy] Stop. She locked
us in here for a reason.
Okay, that makes you
miss crying yourself to sleep,
wetting the bed, and getting
your fucking ass kicked?
Get off me.
Fitz.
Yes, Clara?
Did you honestly think I
would hide some feral children
who've been running around shooting people?
No.
But I have a job to do.
You said you understood.
Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.
I mean, you knew our Lauren.
We knew your Danny.
Hank and I loved him like a son.
-Clara, that's not fair.
-They were good kids.
Not like these monsters.
My job is not to judge anyone.
My job is to catch 'em.
Then do your job.
Don't come around here again.
[Ben] Hey, look, we may
have fucked up, okay? I'm sorry.
Sit down.
[Vicky, softly] Sit down.
[Clara sighs]
[Jeffy] Seriously, we'll just leave.
[Clara] And risk my own
safety? I don't think so.
[bucket clatters]
[Clara] Get undressed and clean yourselves.
Fuck you.
I'm not getting undressed.
[gun cocks]
-[Jeffy] Hey.
[Clara] You'll do as you're fucking told.
[Crystal] Where's Seth?
You'll join him soon.
[suspenseful music playing]
[door rattles]
What the fuck are you doing?
You'll get filthy all over again.
Put those on.
What's this?
[sighs]
That's better. Nice and clean.
Smile.
[chuckles]
Now what?
Now, I'm gonna wash your clothes.
No fucking funny business.
[suspenseful music playing]
Do you trust me, Mary?
-No.
-[Chuckles]
Smart.
Trust has to be earned, don't you think?
[Mary] Why am I here?
You don't know?
[Mary] Because you're angry?
Well, I was angry.
But I see something in you.
Something I recognize.
Would you like some sweets?
Salt water taffy.
I know, it's naughty.
Mmm.
[Mary] Where's your husband?
Hank helped save the world.
Put the knife back on the table, Mary.
What?
I know you've had to
build up your defenses.
You can let go now.
Put down the gloves. No
one's trying to hurt you here.
[Clara] That's good.
Have a taffy, dear.
Mmm.
Yummy, yes?
You know, this might sound silly,
but it takes luck, a miracle even,
for two people to find each other.
Where are the others?
They don't care about you, Mary.
They don't care about themselves.
But are they here?
No.
[door closes]
[suspenseful music playing]
[echoing whisper] Mary.
Lily?
Is everything okay?
[cries]
[echoing whisper] I'm
feeling sick. It hurts.
Okay.
Okay.
Let me get a better look, okay?
-[gasps] Oh, my God.
-I thought I saw a ghost.
[gasps]
[mouse squeaks]
-[mousetrap snaps]
[birds chirping]
[Ben sighs]
Maybe if we start a fire,
she'll call the fire department?
Start a fire with what, Jeffy?
We can't give up.
[sighs]
[window rattling]
[door opens]
We need some sunshine.
[thud]
Guys, I think I found it.
All right. Back up.
Get out of my way.
[yells]
[grunting]
[birds chirping]
Looks big enough for you.
Fuck that.
I'm not going in there.
-She'll hear me.
-No, she won't.
-[Jeffy] Yeah, I can't do it.
-What the fuck?
Guys, she's outside.
My babies.
Aphids love these things.
Die, you little shits.
I mean, I hate the dark and small spaces.
That's both.
Move, move.
-Okay. Move. Move!
-Okay. Okay.
-I'll do it.
-Look, just scout it
and come back, okay?
Here.
All right.
[Clara] Hank loved his capsicum.
But why should I have to take care of them?
[sobbing]
[gasps]
Something is wrong with this lady.
[sobbing]
I'm sorry.
Get rid of them?
I always felt I should keep them alive.
But I should plant what I want.
[suspenseful music playing]
[grunting]
Die. Die.
[grunting]
[sobbing]
[suspenseful music playing]
[crickets chirping]
She doesn't know we're up here.
Hold her outside.
Hold her outside.
What the fuck are you doing?
Stop.
-Sorry.
-Goodness' sake.
-Sorry.
-These bruise easily.
What are we making again?
[Clara] Progress.
[suspenseful music playing]
Thank you for coming out with me.
I really enjoyed that.
I think we're becoming friends, Mary.
Is there anything else we could do?
Later, dear.
[suspenseful music playing]
[attic ladder clatters]
[Clara] Are we behaving?
What were you doing?
-[Crystal] Nothing.
[Clara] Don't lie.
Did you treat your own daughter like this?
'Cause if you did, I hope you know
she thought you were a total bitch.
-She didn't mean that.
-Shut up!
Are you saying I was a bad mother?
I wanna see Seth.
Well, I was going to take you to see him,
but if you're going to insult me like that,
I don't think you're ready.
Seth will be very
disappointed in you, Crystal.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
-[Clara] Well.
-[Jeffy] Don't worry, Crystal.
It's probably just a trick.
Do you want to see Seth or not, Crystal?
It's your choice.
I can take you to him, but
it has to be your decision.
Please. [Sobbing]
[Ben] Crys.
Crys.
Crys, no. Come on.
What are you doing?
Crystal.
It's gonna be okay.
[nearby clatter]
[heavy door slides shut]
Wait, wait, wait.
Wait, wait.
Where's Seth?
[Clara] Let's freshen up for him, shall we?
No, I-I wanna go back.
[stammering] I don't want to see Seth.
Get undressed.
No, I wanna go with the others.
This was your choice, remember?
[Crystal] Please, don't do this to me.
Wait, no, no, no. No, no, no.
No, no, no!
Wait! Wait!
No! No!
[banging on door]
No! Let me out!
Let me out!
No! No!
No! No!
Please, I want my mommy!
[Vicky] Okay, here's the plan for tonight.
I'm gonna go down into
that room really quietly.
And I'm gonna find anything
to get us outta here, okay?
When I'm out, I'm
gonna run as fast as I can
to that greenhouse, and
I'm gonna burn it down.
And that should draw her out.
If something goes wrong,
Jeffy, I need you to use this.
Only if something goes wrong.
[suspenseful music playing]
[keys jingling]
[suspenseful music playing]
[door creaks open]
[suspenseful music playing]
Sneaky bitch.
How did she get out?
I picked the lock
and let her out.
[Clara] Impressive!
Since that door is barrel locked
and can't be unlocked from the inside.
I think you're turning a poor case, Jeffy.
I need your help with something.
We have an issue, Mary.
Vicky left this room,
and Jeffy won't say how.
I think he'll tell you.
Who, me?
Give this to Jeffy.
Go on.
That's right. And I'll
give this to you, Mary.
-What the fuck is that?
-Put it around your neck, Jeffy.
I swear, if you touch...
Do it...
or we say goodbye to Vicky.
That's it.
Last chance, young man.
How did your sister leave the attic?
No.
[Clara] Do it, Mary.
There's a hole in the Wall.
[Clara] Interesting.
Now go on. Go ahead.
But they just told you.
[Clara] Well, there must be consequences,
or they'll do it again.
Give it to me. Give it to me.
Oh. That will make it
easier, won't it, Mary?
Come on.
Come on.
Yeah.
Do what Mommy says.
Just do it!
Do it, Mary.
[electricity zapping]
[overlapping shouts and screams]
Stop! No!
Please. Let go of me. Stop!
[metal clatters]
[clatter]
We make a good team, you and I.
Don't you think?
What's wrong with you?
-[Clara] Hmm?
Why did you make me do that?
Because they were going
to destroy our garden.
And that's not the real reason.
Because they got to live
while good people died.
That isn't their fault.
You've had a big day. I
think you should go to bed.
No. It feels like jail in there.
-Go to bed.
-No, I don't want to!
[glass shatters]
You don't know what you want.
[rustling]
[crickets chirping]
[door creaks open]
[panting softly]
[Clara muttering]
[Clara] I know it's too soon,
but you need to take them.
[Clara] I know.
[Clara muttering softly]
[Clara] Don't make this hard.
[Clara mutters softly]
[door creaks open]
[Mary, softly] Okay.
[softly] Okay.
[sighs]
[cups clatter softly]
It's just tea.
I have to confess,
I almost gave up on you last night.
And I've decided to put you
in the attic with the others.
I'm sorry. Did you want sugar?
[sighs] Where was I?
So I spoke to Hank last night.
I'm sorry. What?
You spoke to?
You know, he'd appear there in the kitchen
at the end of each day.
And he'd have this huge smile on his face.
And he'd take me in his arms...
and all the messes
and the bullshit that day
would just wash away.
When he held me, Mary...
I felt safe.
I couldn't save Lauren,
but I think I can save you.
[Mary] Save me from what?
You know, Hank told me last night,
he said... he said,
"If you give her more time, she'll stay.
Eventually she'll stay."
-I want to stay.
-[Clara] You do?
I want to stay...
-Please stay, Mary.
Please don't leave me, Mary.
-No, please, please.
-No, don't be afraid.
I'll be a good mother.
I'll be a good mother.
Please. Please, Mary.
You're glowing.
[panting]
You've been out of your room.
[grunting]
Mary.
How did you get out of your room?
Mary?
Mary!
You little bitch.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Mary grunts]
[car engine revs]
Guys, it's Mary.
-Okay. Okay.
-[Jeffy] Come on, come on.
All right.
Let's hurry. I don't know how long
-she's gonna be out.
-[Jeffy] Where is she?
[Mary] She's downstairs.
Help me with Ben. Come on.
[grunts]
[suspenseful music playing]
[woman on radio] Now,
with the full-blown virus,
we've seen 19-year-olds
with bites that don't affect them.
[man] Polls say that the
majority of adult Americans
are not sympathetic to the plight
of the underaged, despite the pressure...
[Mary] No!
No, please...
-Now, I can protect you.
Please let me out.
Take off your dress.
Please. I'm sorry.
Hank was right. Please.
[Clara] Take off that dress.
We just need more time.
[Clara] Hank was wrong!
[Mary crying]
Please let me out!
Please!
Please!
Please let me out!
Please!
[crying continues]
Let me out!
[Clara] Take off the dress,
or next time it will be very hot!
[Mary] Please. I'm sorry. I'm just scared.
You have no idea.
[doorbell rings]
[pounding on door]
-[Mary] Wait! Please!
Oh. Have you come for more cookies,
or have you come to harass
your old friend's wife again?
Clara, the kids never turned up in Deming,
and they didn't go back to Albuquerque.
The dump van is all I have.
What's going on?
You don't seem quite yourself.
He was going to bleed to death.
-What?
-I know. I know.
I supposed I'd get into trouble.
But it doesn't matter now. They're gone.
Do you know where?
Why don't you come inside for some cookies,
and I'll tell you all about...
-No. Tell me now.
-I just made a fresh batch.
-[Fitz] Clara?
-Are you sure?
-I am sure.
Okay, look, I will keep
your name out of this.
I just need to know everything right now.
I drove them to Las Cruces.
I don't know what
happened to them after that.
They tried to make it to the tunnels?
All right. Look, if you just
collect yourself, all right?
Just collect yourself. Calm down.
-Okay.
-[Fitz] Okay?
Please let me out! Please!
Please. Does anybody hear me?
[door opens]
[Mary screaming]
[water draining]
[sobs softly]
[dramatic music playing]
[Fitz gasps]
[suspenseful music playing]
[gasping]
Oh, my God.
[breathing shakily]
Okay.
Okay. [Breathing heavily]
[creature grunting]
[growling]
-[screams]
[crying]
[sobbing]
[growling]
[screaming]
[growling]
[Clara shouts indistinctly]
[dramatic music playing]
Good, Jeffy. Good, good, good.
We gotta go. We gotta go.
[growling]
[Clara sobbing]
Watch out, watch out.
-It's not safe.
-[Fitz] Open the door!
Watch out, watch out.
[Fitz] Open the door!
This is Detective Fitz
from the Youth Division.
I'm here to help you.
Can you open the door?
[grunts] It won't open.
What the fuck happened to you?
We gotta get out of here. Help me with Ben.
I'll look for the key.
[screams]
[Vicky grunting]
[breathing heavily]
Stop!
[growls]
-[gunshot]
It's okay. It's okay.
It's okay. It's okay. Let me look.
Let me just have a look at your wound.
I'm gonna help you get through the wall.
Look at me. I'm gonna help you, okay?
I'm gonna squeeze this just a little bit.
Okay. Tell me.
Tell me where she is.
[gunshot]
-[grunts]
[Clara cries and mutters]
[Jeffy] Come on!
[Vicky] To the door.
[Jeffy] Come on. Get inside.
[car engine hesitates]
[Jeffy] It's not working?
[car engine hesitates]
Fine. I got this.
Try to start it again.
[car engine sputtering, revving]
[screaming]
[Crystal] Oh, my God,
Jeffy, get in... get in the car.
[grunting]
-Let him go.
Let him go.
[grunting]
I gotta get the gun.
[grunting]
[gunshot]
[gasping]
[Jeffy] Hey, Ben, Ben!
[Ben grunts]
[crying]
[Vicky] It's okay. It's okay, it's okay.
You're gonna be fine. You're gonna be fine.
It's okay, you're gonna be okay.
We're so close.
We're so close.
[cries]
Please. You understand?
You have to stay with me.
[Ben breathes deeply]
Ben.
[crying]
Ben.
[Jeffy] Your veins.
Your veins.
[dramatic music playing]
[gasping]
No.
Jeffy.
I'm okay.
I promise, I'm okay.
You can come to me, I'm okay.
No.
What are you doing?
What are you doing?
[Vicky] Just bury me with him.
[crying]
[Jeffy] Wait, no!
-[Gunshot]
[cries]
I'm sorry.
[crying] It's okay. It's okay.
[crying]
-It's okay.
I'm sorry.
[dramatic music playing]
[Mary] I don't know
what it means to grow up.
I just know what it means to get older.
It means that the things you love the most
eventually get ripped away,
the people you love most.
For the ones you can hang onto...
you need to hang onto
them as tight as you can,
for as long as you can.
There's a wall down
the road waiting for us.
That's fine.
We'll just have to find a way through.
[somber music playing]
[tense music playing]
[radio static]
[woman] Very little is
known about the disease,
but what we do know is beyond disturbing.
Somehow, this virus is
turning people into cannibals.
[man] The evacuation of
key government officials
is continuing.
[man] We have suffered
millions of losses already.
It is believed children
are the carriers of the virus,
as most under 18 are
asymptomatic when bitten.
[indistinct radio chatter]
[man] Nothing conclusive
about the children,
but this wave of
misinformation has overtaken...
[man] Today, Phase 5 has been implemented,
which mandates the immediate
death of anybody infected.
There is no cure. There is no coming back.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Mary] At first, only adults were infected.
Our parents, teachers, families.
Most of them were wiped out.
Then, after a kid in Albuquerque
developed symptoms, we were rounded up
and placed into camps
where they could monitor us.
Turns out that one
percent of kids got sick.
The adults hated us for that.
They blamed us for the outbreak
and took away our freedom.
Some of us managed to escape,
but most were killed trying.
Getting out of the camps
was just the first step.
Escaping the country is the goal.
All I have to do is make it across.
[suspenseful music playing]
[helicopter flying overhead]
[helicopter departs]
[distant indistinct chatter]
[man] Please be aware
of unaccompanied minors.
For your safety, do not
approach these individuals.
If you encounter an unaccompanied minor,
please notify the nearest
officer immediately.
Please don't offer help,
please don't offer money,
and please don't feed the children.
[helicopter passes overhead]
[indistinct chatter]
[soldier] Who is this?
[teen] My mother.
Right. Wrist band.
[scanner beeps]
[indistinct chatter nearby]
[radio voice] Come in.
[distant dog barking]
Psst!
[distant reverse indicator beeping]
Hey!
One of the cars was unlocked.
I found a lollipop.
Good for you. Now get lost. Please.
Bet you wanna get on one of those buses.
If you have a valid ID, it ain't happening.
No shit.
And if you haven't got a valid ID,
you need an adult.
No adult, no bus.
[indistinct chatter]
Hey, I'm Jeffy.
Jeffy, if you don't
disappear in three seconds,
I'm gonna kick your ass.
And I'm gonna take your lollipop,
and I'm gonna eat it over your broken body.
Go away.
Do that.
[suspenseful music playing]
[distant engine revving]
[suspenseful music continues]
[object clatters]
-[soldier] Hey.
-Shit!
[intense music playing]
[engine starts]
-[sirens wailing]
[Jeffy] Hey, come on.
Get on, get on. Come on, come on.
[siren wailing]
[intense music playing]
[siren wailing]
[crickets chirping]
[door opens]
[Jeffy] Watch this.
[large electrical switch clunks]
[Jeffy] It's beautiful, isn't it?
You like it?
[Jeffy chuckles softly]
[Jeffy] Ahh! Home sweet home.
You're really lucky I was at the bus depot.
'Cause if I wasn't, you'll be toast.
By the way, I didn't catch your name.
Uh, I'm Mary.
[Jeffy] Allergic to peanut butter?
-No.
-All right. Good.
I'm gonna make this
special for you, all right?
-Yeah.
-[Jeffy] You like it?
Got you.
Make yourself comfortable.
Have a seat.
I mean, if you want.
We each have our own area.
This is mine.
[dramatic music playing]
[Jeffy] Hey, this is just for you.
Thanks.
You're welcome.
You can find tons of good
stuff in abandoned houses.
The thing is, you have to make sure
a house is really abandoned.
You have to watch a while.
And then, well, you
sneak in, get your goodies,
get yourself, you know, a couple of toys.
And then you...
-[door opens loudly]
[Ben] Well, that was a bust.
Can't believe the Paisanos
locked their fucking dumpster.
Who the fuck is that?
[Jeffy] This is Mary.
Found her at the bus station.
[Ben] The bus station? Ballsy.
[Vicky] Some kids got
busted there like two days ago.
Uh, look, I-I'll just go.
[Jeffy] That's Ben. That's Crystal.
That's Seth and, you
know, that's my sister, Vicky.
Look, you guys don't know
what I've been through, okay?
So don't test me.
Nobody test Ms. Free Sandwich.
Ooh, everybody, she's cool, guys.
Come on, take a breather.
We don't know that yet.
Now she knows our
place. If she gets caught,
she could turn us in.
You need to invest in a brush, babe.
Hey.
Unh-unh. Protocol.
Yeah?
The border?
That's where you're trying to take the bus?
Uh, it's safe for kids there.
Just give me back my stuff.
The fuck was that?
Hey. I've heard that.
Do you think it's true?
Yeah.
Why?
Because there's gotta
be somewhere out there
that's not just awful.
Seriously?
All right. That is
quintessential false logic.
FYI, I bet you went to private school.
Even if it is true, how
you gonna get there?
You heard of the Wall?
Fucker's 30 feet high.
La Migra's up there with
snipers day and night.
There's a tunnel.
Yeah?
Do tell.
A girl, she told me about
it when I was in a camp.
She's the one that gave me the map,
and she showed me where to go.
She got it from someone in the underground.
Hey, guys, we should go.
[Seth] Grow up, Jeffy. It's a fantasy.
[Ben] Yeah, I'm not convinced.
What else do you know?
[indistinct radio chatter]
To be honest, I'm not
really trying to convince you.
[Jeffy] What are you doing, Mary?
Look, thanks for the help, Jeffy, but...
it kind of seems like
you guys are full up, so.
Pretty much.
-[indistinct radio chatter]
-You get nabbed...
you gonna rat on us?
No.
[man] Units be advised, two runaways.
Boy, approximately 13
years of age and a girl, 16.
Last seen at the bus depot
heading towards the
abandoned community center...
[Ben] Get your shit. Let's go.
What the fuck did I tell you, Jeffy?
-[Jeffy] Go, go, go, go.
-Seth.
[Ben] Seth, keys.
Let's go.
-[man] Hey.
-[Ben] Go.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Seth] Where are we supposed to go now?
-We can't go back.
-[Mary] Seth, calm down.
We'll figure it out.
[suspenseful music playing]
[crickets chirping]
[indistinct radio chatter]
So, where exactly is this tunnel?
[indistinct radio chatter]
She doesn't know.
She just doesn't wanna be left behind.
Okay, go 25 South.
[Crystal giggles]
[crickets chirping]
[dramatic music playing]
[darkly dramatic music rises]
[Mary] Okay, right. When
I say run, we run, okay?
Okay.
Come on. Come on, come on.
-[distant dogs barking]
-Right, we're all right.
Run!
-[Sharp gasp] Teddy!
Come on, let's hide.
I need Teddy!
No. No, no, no.
Lily! Lily!
Lily! Lily!
[gunshot]
-Lily.
[indistinct radio chatter]
I'm sorry.
[Vicky] Who's Lily?
Um... my sister.
[indistinct radio chatter]
Jeffy's my brother.
-You can have him if you want.
-Hey, he's my brother, too.
If you're gonna give him away,
it's gotta be a family decision.
You know, I got a special skill.
Yeah? What's that?
I'm a master thief.
[laughter]
You are a master at bullshit, Jeffy.
Am I? Wait.
Look.
What the hell? That's mine.
-Told you.
-But can I see it?
I won't take it, I promise.
[indistinct radio chatter]
It's pretty.
[indistinct radio chatter]
It's a good luck charm.
[crickets chirping]
[Ben] Jeffy, grab the tool bag, all right?
[Jeffy] I got this.
All right, you know the drill.
[Jeffy] See if they have
taco-flavored Doritos.
Too loud, too risky. You know the rules.
[Ben] Let's go.
Go, go.
[crickets chirping]
Your name is Balthazar?
Yeah.
It's "Bally" for short.
I like your ink.
[clerk] Yeah?
[Ben] You draw that?
[clerk] I did, actually.
-It's great.
-Yeah.
[clerk] Yeah, it's pretty cool.
Um, do you want one? Do you have any?
[Ben] I don't have any.
My mom didn't let me.
[clerk] No?
[Ben] Yeah, I wanna get one. I actually...
Don't worry. We do this all the time.
If anything comes up,
we got a plan for that, too.
[soft laugh] Look at you, you badass.
[suspenseful music playing]
-This looks pretty.
-Thank you.
[conversation continues indistinctly]
-[Ben] Wrapped around?
-Wrapped around the heart.
[gasps] Shit.
[Mary gasps]
Hey, what are you...
Hey, what are you doing?
That's not part of the plan.
Oh, shit.
[engine starts]
Jeffy, hurry up!
[Jeffy] Shit!
Let go of me.
Vick, let's fucking go.
What the fuck are you doing?
-Hang up.
-Put the gun down.
-[Mary] Hang up.
-Drop it.
[clerk] I need a Wrangler
right now, the shop...
[gunshot]
[Ben] Let's go. Go, go.
[gunshot]
-[screams] Jeez! Fuck!
Fuck, let's go, let's go, let's go.
Fuck!
[car tires screeching]
-[gunshots]
-What the hell happened?
-Find a hospital now.
No, no, no, we can't.
They're gonna arrest us.
[overlapping panicked chatter]
He's bleeding fucking everywhere!
[engine hesitates]
[angry muttering]
Oh, fuck it.
Stay with Ben.
[Mary] He's not breathing
right. He needs help.
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
-Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck...
-[Ben] Stop. Crystal, stop.
I need to keep pressure on
it. You're bleeding everywhere.
-[Ben] Stop pressing on it.
-This is all your fault.
-[Ben] I'm fine.
-Bingo.
[Vicky] Are you serious?
-You got him shot.
-[All arguing]
[Jeffy] Wait, guys. Come on, stop.
[Seth] Hey, hey! Vicky, guys...!
That's a big house.
Probably abandoned, but it
could have supplies for Ben.
Come on.
[crickets chirping]
[ominous music plays]
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
-How we feeling?
-I don't know.
Hey, hey, let's go, let's go.
All right, Jeffy.
-Okay.
-You go right, okay?
Be quiet.
I will go left.
[Jeffy] Okay.
[Vicky] Jeffy, be careful.
[crickets chirping]
[Crystal] Here.
I'm just gonna put some pressure on it.
[suspenseful music playing]
[ominous music playing]
[tripwire snaps]
[alarm blaring]
-Oh, my God.
-[Panicked chatter]
[Jeffy] Guys. Guys, what now?
[panicked shouting]
[Seth] What the fuck is going on?
[panicked shouting]
[door locks clacking]
What do you want?
You can't be here.
He's shot, and he just needs some help.
I'm not supposed to take in children.
Please, you have to help him.
He looks all right to me.
I suppose I could take a look.
Are you a doctor or something?
[Clara] I'm a nurse.
But you have to leave
before my husband gets back.
He works nights, but he's a police officer.
-[Ben] No.
-There's no other options, Seth.
Yes.
Please.
Thank you.
[Ben] Are you fucking kidding me?
[Mary] We need help.
Well, aren't you the lovely bunch.
Come on.
[Ben] [screams]
Lost a heap of blood, minimal trauma.
You got lucky.
Still a high risk of
infection, so keep it clean.
[gasps]
I saw the news tonight.
Don't worry,
I won't say anything.
I know they blame orphans for everything.
[Ben] Yeah. Thanks.
Um, we gotta go, though, so...
Well, no, you need to rest a while.
I'll make some cookies.
How does that sound?
And don't worry.
My husband, he works late.
You got this, Ben.
You're a warrior.
[Ben] Oh, fuck off.
Let's bounce.
[Jeffy] Let's eat.
It smells really good.
You think when her cop husband comes home,
he's gonna give us fucking piggyback rides?
Seth's right.
We got to get the fuck out of here.
Let's take her car.
I saw car tracks.
Yeah, probably from her husband's cop car.
[Mary] No, look.
This is not a cop car.
[Jeffy] But she just helped us.
Yeah, but we need it more than she does.
[Seth] Go keep an eye on her.
You guys...
[Seth] Go, dipshit.
[Jeffy] Fine.
You guys look around.
Try find some keys, okay?
Nobody likes a sneak.
Want to help?
[Jeffy sighs]
Okay.
I like you.
You're nice.
What's the matter with you?
[Jeffy] I got cookies.
Hey, Ben.
[Ben] Just give me a cookie, okay?
[Clara] So let's bond.
Sorry it's only sweets.
It tastes funny.
It tastes funny?
Hmm. Thank you.
-[Ben] Thanks.
-Enjoy.
Lauren and Hank...
before he was transferred to Phase 5...
and had to put people
down like sick animals.
I still can't believe it came to that.
Wiped it out, though, huh?
[Clara] Yes.
And here we are.
Is Lauren here?
No.
She wasn't lucky like you.
We lost her.
Oh.
Yeah, so... [clears throat]
Thank you for the... the sweets
and helping our friend out.
Where are your car keys?
I beg your pardon?
For the car that you
have out there in the barn.
Yeah, sorry. Look, um...
we need some wheels, okay?
-[Clara] How dare you.
-Okay. Jeffy, kitchen.
-Guys, look around.
-Wait, what...
what are you doing?
[Ben] Look for the keys, please.
[Clara] No, don't touch...
Clara, over here.
[Ben] Crystal, no.
[Clara] Don't touch my things.
[Jeffy] Seth, check her pockets.
[Mary] Yeah, I don't think...
-[Crystal] Seth!
-Keys, Doc.
[Seth] All right. Hang on, Vick.
-[Clara] Relax.
-[Seth] Hey, hang on, hang on.
Hang on. Hang on, okay?
You're going to kill me for my car?
[Mary] No. Don't.
-[Vicky] You're staying.
-[Seth] Hang on.
-[Ben] Vicky, she knows the way.
-[Seth] No, no.
-We need to...
-I don't trust her, Ben.
Let's go home. Come on.
[Jeffy] Hey, we can't go back.
You can't just leave me here.
Seth, we can't leave Mary
here. She's one of us now.
No, she's not. We don't know her.
Everything has turned to shit
-since she showed up.
-Okay. All right. All right.
You win, Vick, okay?
-Come on. Sorry, Mary.
-[Vicky] Keys.
Keys. Come on.
-[Ben] Just relax, Vicky.
-[Vicky] Keys.
[Clara] Yes.
-Take them.
-Come on. Crystal, come on.
-[Ben] All right, let's go.
-[Crystal] I'm sorry.
[thudding]
[gunshot]
Terrible guests.
[Jeffy groans]
What the...
fuck?
-Hey, wake up.
-[Ben] What the fuck?
[Jeffy] She drugged us.
I think we're in the attic.
Hey, wake up, wake up.
[grunts]
-[Jeffy] Wake up.
It's bolted.
She fuckin' drugged us.
I said that.
But why?
She's pissed. Why do you think?
No.
She drugged us before
we tried to get her car.
She's obviously psycho.
How do we get out of here?
[Ben] Crystal, check the window.
There's too many layers.
Guys, where's Seth?
[suspenseful music playing]
Hello?
[suspenseful music playing]
Lovely.
Hank gave those to Lauren.
I noticed your ears weren't pierced.
I've replaced that dirty old string.
I bet you haven't felt
this pretty in a while.
Thanks.
I'm really sorry.
We shouldn't have tried to take your car.
Sit.
Don't worry. I won't bite.
We were just really desperate.
Belize, yes?
I saw the map in your backpack.
You should know, Border Patrol
closed the tunnel last week...
so you'll have to think of a new plan.
[sobs]
You stay put.
The police are looking for you.
[banging]
Hello?
[water splatters]
[banging]
Let me out!
Let me out!
[banging]
[door creaks open]
[suspenseful music playing]
[Seth] Hello?
[screaming]
Someone's here.
[Crystal] I'm scared something
bad happened to Seth.
We'll find him.
[knocks on door]
Are you here for your checkup?
I don't know. Does it look like I need one?
Never mind. It's too late for you.
[chuckling]
-It's good to see you, Clara.
-You too, Fitz. Come in.
I'll get you some cookies.
[Fitz] You haven't asked me why I'm here.
I supposed you'd get to it.
Yeah.
We had a little shootout
at the Quick Stop last night.
Got a winged store owner.
And a minor also took a bullet.
Horrible.
It makes me sick what
these wild kids get up to.
Those camps are too loose.
They should put them all in cages.
Mm-hmm.
Anyway, their car is
abandoned right down the road.
You're kidding.
They come knocking?
No, Fitz.
You don't think I'd have mentioned that?
Yeah.
[Clara] Oh, the hole.
Never noticed it before?
No. No, I haven't.
-Some detective you are.
-[Chuckles]
I'm gonna need to take a
look around your property.
[Clara] Of course.
Just a formality.
[Clara] Be my guest.
[rolling doors open]
[chuckles]
Wow.
So glad you kept it.
You ever take her out?
[Clara] Oh, Hank would kill me.
I turn her on every once in a while
to keep the battery from
dying, if I remember to.
[chuckles]
Kids used to love it when we took them out.
[chuckles]
Danny and Lauren were
like two peas in a pod.
All good kids.
[sighs]
-It's okay to be sad.
You know, sometimes I
wake up and I hear Linda
cooking breakfast with Danny.
And then, I...
I really wake up.
[exhales]
Come on.
[Jeffy, softly] Oh, shit.
Let's get his attention.
No fucking way.
Well, she's up to something.
I don't wanna find out what it is.
We can handle one lady.
[birds chirping]
-Jeffy, do not...
-[bang]
Radiator's playing up. I've got
someone coming to look at it.
Mm-hmm.
You love camps now, huh? Listen to me.
They will split us up, and
you will never see me again.
[Jeffy] Stop. She locked
us in here for a reason.
Okay, that makes you
miss crying yourself to sleep,
wetting the bed, and getting
your fucking ass kicked?
Get off me.
Fitz.
Yes, Clara?
Did you honestly think I
would hide some feral children
who've been running around shooting people?
No.
But I have a job to do.
You said you understood.
Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.
I mean, you knew our Lauren.
We knew your Danny.
Hank and I loved him like a son.
-Clara, that's not fair.
-They were good kids.
Not like these monsters.
My job is not to judge anyone.
My job is to catch 'em.
Then do your job.
Don't come around here again.
[Ben] Hey, look, we may
have fucked up, okay? I'm sorry.
Sit down.
[Vicky, softly] Sit down.
[Clara sighs]
[Jeffy] Seriously, we'll just leave.
[Clara] And risk my own
safety? I don't think so.
[bucket clatters]
[Clara] Get undressed and clean yourselves.
Fuck you.
I'm not getting undressed.
[gun cocks]
-[Jeffy] Hey.
[Clara] You'll do as you're fucking told.
[Crystal] Where's Seth?
You'll join him soon.
[suspenseful music playing]
[door rattles]
What the fuck are you doing?
You'll get filthy all over again.
Put those on.
What's this?
[sighs]
That's better. Nice and clean.
Smile.
[chuckles]
Now what?
Now, I'm gonna wash your clothes.
No fucking funny business.
[suspenseful music playing]
Do you trust me, Mary?
-No.
-[Chuckles]
Smart.
Trust has to be earned, don't you think?
[Mary] Why am I here?
You don't know?
[Mary] Because you're angry?
Well, I was angry.
But I see something in you.
Something I recognize.
Would you like some sweets?
Salt water taffy.
I know, it's naughty.
Mmm.
[Mary] Where's your husband?
Hank helped save the world.
Put the knife back on the table, Mary.
What?
I know you've had to
build up your defenses.
You can let go now.
Put down the gloves. No
one's trying to hurt you here.
[Clara] That's good.
Have a taffy, dear.
Mmm.
Yummy, yes?
You know, this might sound silly,
but it takes luck, a miracle even,
for two people to find each other.
Where are the others?
They don't care about you, Mary.
They don't care about themselves.
But are they here?
No.
[door closes]
[suspenseful music playing]
[echoing whisper] Mary.
Lily?
Is everything okay?
[cries]
[echoing whisper] I'm
feeling sick. It hurts.
Okay.
Okay.
Let me get a better look, okay?
-[gasps] Oh, my God.
-I thought I saw a ghost.
[gasps]
[mouse squeaks]
-[mousetrap snaps]
[birds chirping]
[Ben sighs]
Maybe if we start a fire,
she'll call the fire department?
Start a fire with what, Jeffy?
We can't give up.
[sighs]
[window rattling]
[door opens]
We need some sunshine.
[thud]
Guys, I think I found it.
All right. Back up.
Get out of my way.
[yells]
[grunting]
[birds chirping]
Looks big enough for you.
Fuck that.
I'm not going in there.
-She'll hear me.
-No, she won't.
-[Jeffy] Yeah, I can't do it.
-What the fuck?
Guys, she's outside.
My babies.
Aphids love these things.
Die, you little shits.
I mean, I hate the dark and small spaces.
That's both.
Move, move.
-Okay. Move. Move!
-Okay. Okay.
-I'll do it.
-Look, just scout it
and come back, okay?
Here.
All right.
[Clara] Hank loved his capsicum.
But why should I have to take care of them?
[sobbing]
[gasps]
Something is wrong with this lady.
[sobbing]
I'm sorry.
Get rid of them?
I always felt I should keep them alive.
But I should plant what I want.
[suspenseful music playing]
[grunting]
Die. Die.
[grunting]
[sobbing]
[suspenseful music playing]
[crickets chirping]
She doesn't know we're up here.
Hold her outside.
Hold her outside.
What the fuck are you doing?
Stop.
-Sorry.
-Goodness' sake.
-Sorry.
-These bruise easily.
What are we making again?
[Clara] Progress.
[suspenseful music playing]
Thank you for coming out with me.
I really enjoyed that.
I think we're becoming friends, Mary.
Is there anything else we could do?
Later, dear.
[suspenseful music playing]
[attic ladder clatters]
[Clara] Are we behaving?
What were you doing?
-[Crystal] Nothing.
[Clara] Don't lie.
Did you treat your own daughter like this?
'Cause if you did, I hope you know
she thought you were a total bitch.
-She didn't mean that.
-Shut up!
Are you saying I was a bad mother?
I wanna see Seth.
Well, I was going to take you to see him,
but if you're going to insult me like that,
I don't think you're ready.
Seth will be very
disappointed in you, Crystal.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
-[Clara] Well.
-[Jeffy] Don't worry, Crystal.
It's probably just a trick.
Do you want to see Seth or not, Crystal?
It's your choice.
I can take you to him, but
it has to be your decision.
Please. [Sobbing]
[Ben] Crys.
Crys.
Crys, no. Come on.
What are you doing?
Crystal.
It's gonna be okay.
[nearby clatter]
[heavy door slides shut]
Wait, wait, wait.
Wait, wait.
Where's Seth?
[Clara] Let's freshen up for him, shall we?
No, I-I wanna go back.
[stammering] I don't want to see Seth.
Get undressed.
No, I wanna go with the others.
This was your choice, remember?
[Crystal] Please, don't do this to me.
Wait, no, no, no. No, no, no.
No, no, no!
Wait! Wait!
No! No!
[banging on door]
No! Let me out!
Let me out!
No! No!
No! No!
Please, I want my mommy!
[Vicky] Okay, here's the plan for tonight.
I'm gonna go down into
that room really quietly.
And I'm gonna find anything
to get us outta here, okay?
When I'm out, I'm
gonna run as fast as I can
to that greenhouse, and
I'm gonna burn it down.
And that should draw her out.
If something goes wrong,
Jeffy, I need you to use this.
Only if something goes wrong.
[suspenseful music playing]
[keys jingling]
[suspenseful music playing]
[door creaks open]
[suspenseful music playing]
Sneaky bitch.
How did she get out?
I picked the lock
and let her out.
[Clara] Impressive!
Since that door is barrel locked
and can't be unlocked from the inside.
I think you're turning a poor case, Jeffy.
I need your help with something.
We have an issue, Mary.
Vicky left this room,
and Jeffy won't say how.
I think he'll tell you.
Who, me?
Give this to Jeffy.
Go on.
That's right. And I'll
give this to you, Mary.
-What the fuck is that?
-Put it around your neck, Jeffy.
I swear, if you touch...
Do it...
or we say goodbye to Vicky.
That's it.
Last chance, young man.
How did your sister leave the attic?
No.
[Clara] Do it, Mary.
There's a hole in the Wall.
[Clara] Interesting.
Now go on. Go ahead.
But they just told you.
[Clara] Well, there must be consequences,
or they'll do it again.
Give it to me. Give it to me.
Oh. That will make it
easier, won't it, Mary?
Come on.
Come on.
Yeah.
Do what Mommy says.
Just do it!
Do it, Mary.
[electricity zapping]
[overlapping shouts and screams]
Stop! No!
Please. Let go of me. Stop!
[metal clatters]
[clatter]
We make a good team, you and I.
Don't you think?
What's wrong with you?
-[Clara] Hmm?
Why did you make me do that?
Because they were going
to destroy our garden.
And that's not the real reason.
Because they got to live
while good people died.
That isn't their fault.
You've had a big day. I
think you should go to bed.
No. It feels like jail in there.
-Go to bed.
-No, I don't want to!
[glass shatters]
You don't know what you want.
[rustling]
[crickets chirping]
[door creaks open]
[panting softly]
[Clara muttering]
[Clara] I know it's too soon,
but you need to take them.
[Clara] I know.
[Clara muttering softly]
[Clara] Don't make this hard.
[Clara mutters softly]
[door creaks open]
[Mary, softly] Okay.
[softly] Okay.
[sighs]
[cups clatter softly]
It's just tea.
I have to confess,
I almost gave up on you last night.
And I've decided to put you
in the attic with the others.
I'm sorry. Did you want sugar?
[sighs] Where was I?
So I spoke to Hank last night.
I'm sorry. What?
You spoke to?
You know, he'd appear there in the kitchen
at the end of each day.
And he'd have this huge smile on his face.
And he'd take me in his arms...
and all the messes
and the bullshit that day
would just wash away.
When he held me, Mary...
I felt safe.
I couldn't save Lauren,
but I think I can save you.
[Mary] Save me from what?
You know, Hank told me last night,
he said... he said,
"If you give her more time, she'll stay.
Eventually she'll stay."
-I want to stay.
-[Clara] You do?
I want to stay...
-Please stay, Mary.
Please don't leave me, Mary.
-No, please, please.
-No, don't be afraid.
I'll be a good mother.
I'll be a good mother.
Please. Please, Mary.
You're glowing.
[panting]
You've been out of your room.
[grunting]
Mary.
How did you get out of your room?
Mary?
Mary!
You little bitch.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Mary grunts]
[car engine revs]
Guys, it's Mary.
-Okay. Okay.
-[Jeffy] Come on, come on.
All right.
Let's hurry. I don't know how long
-she's gonna be out.
-[Jeffy] Where is she?
[Mary] She's downstairs.
Help me with Ben. Come on.
[grunts]
[suspenseful music playing]
[woman on radio] Now,
with the full-blown virus,
we've seen 19-year-olds
with bites that don't affect them.
[man] Polls say that the
majority of adult Americans
are not sympathetic to the plight
of the underaged, despite the pressure...
[Mary] No!
No, please...
-Now, I can protect you.
Please let me out.
Take off your dress.
Please. I'm sorry.
Hank was right. Please.
[Clara] Take off that dress.
We just need more time.
[Clara] Hank was wrong!
[Mary crying]
Please let me out!
Please!
Please!
Please let me out!
Please!
[crying continues]
Let me out!
[Clara] Take off the dress,
or next time it will be very hot!
[Mary] Please. I'm sorry. I'm just scared.
You have no idea.
[doorbell rings]
[pounding on door]
-[Mary] Wait! Please!
Oh. Have you come for more cookies,
or have you come to harass
your old friend's wife again?
Clara, the kids never turned up in Deming,
and they didn't go back to Albuquerque.
The dump van is all I have.
What's going on?
You don't seem quite yourself.
He was going to bleed to death.
-What?
-I know. I know.
I supposed I'd get into trouble.
But it doesn't matter now. They're gone.
Do you know where?
Why don't you come inside for some cookies,
and I'll tell you all about...
-No. Tell me now.
-I just made a fresh batch.
-[Fitz] Clara?
-Are you sure?
-I am sure.
Okay, look, I will keep
your name out of this.
I just need to know everything right now.
I drove them to Las Cruces.
I don't know what
happened to them after that.
They tried to make it to the tunnels?
All right. Look, if you just
collect yourself, all right?
Just collect yourself. Calm down.
-Okay.
-[Fitz] Okay?
Please let me out! Please!
Please. Does anybody hear me?
[door opens]
[Mary screaming]
[water draining]
[sobs softly]
[dramatic music playing]
[Fitz gasps]
[suspenseful music playing]
[gasping]
Oh, my God.
[breathing shakily]
Okay.
Okay. [Breathing heavily]
[creature grunting]
[growling]
-[screams]
[crying]
[sobbing]
[growling]
[screaming]
[growling]
[Clara shouts indistinctly]
[dramatic music playing]
Good, Jeffy. Good, good, good.
We gotta go. We gotta go.
[growling]
[Clara sobbing]
Watch out, watch out.
-It's not safe.
-[Fitz] Open the door!
Watch out, watch out.
[Fitz] Open the door!
This is Detective Fitz
from the Youth Division.
I'm here to help you.
Can you open the door?
[grunts] It won't open.
What the fuck happened to you?
We gotta get out of here. Help me with Ben.
I'll look for the key.
[screams]
[Vicky grunting]
[breathing heavily]
Stop!
[growls]
-[gunshot]
It's okay. It's okay.
It's okay. It's okay. Let me look.
Let me just have a look at your wound.
I'm gonna help you get through the wall.
Look at me. I'm gonna help you, okay?
I'm gonna squeeze this just a little bit.
Okay. Tell me.
Tell me where she is.
[gunshot]
-[grunts]
[Clara cries and mutters]
[Jeffy] Come on!
[Vicky] To the door.
[Jeffy] Come on. Get inside.
[car engine hesitates]
[Jeffy] It's not working?
[car engine hesitates]
Fine. I got this.
Try to start it again.
[car engine sputtering, revving]
[screaming]
[Crystal] Oh, my God,
Jeffy, get in... get in the car.
[grunting]
-Let him go.
Let him go.
[grunting]
I gotta get the gun.
[grunting]
[gunshot]
[gasping]
[Jeffy] Hey, Ben, Ben!
[Ben grunts]
[crying]
[Vicky] It's okay. It's okay, it's okay.
You're gonna be fine. You're gonna be fine.
It's okay, you're gonna be okay.
We're so close.
We're so close.
[cries]
Please. You understand?
You have to stay with me.
[Ben breathes deeply]
Ben.
[crying]
Ben.
[Jeffy] Your veins.
Your veins.
[dramatic music playing]
[gasping]
No.
Jeffy.
I'm okay.
I promise, I'm okay.
You can come to me, I'm okay.
No.
What are you doing?
What are you doing?
[Vicky] Just bury me with him.
[crying]
[Jeffy] Wait, no!
-[Gunshot]
[cries]
I'm sorry.
[crying] It's okay. It's okay.
[crying]
-It's okay.
I'm sorry.
[dramatic music playing]
[Mary] I don't know
what it means to grow up.
I just know what it means to get older.
It means that the things you love the most
eventually get ripped away,
the people you love most.
For the ones you can hang onto...
you need to hang onto
them as tight as you can,
for as long as you can.
There's a wall down
the road waiting for us.
That's fine.
We'll just have to find a way through.
[somber music playing]
[tense music playing]
