Rancor (2024) Movie Script
1
Hi everyone and welcome to "Rancor."
With next to no film crew
and on a very tight budget,
the odds were against us,
but Psalm 37:4 says,
"Delight yourself in the Lord
and He will give you the
desires of your heart."
You're about to witness of
fulfillment of that desire,
which I have had for many, many years.
With that being said,
thank you all for coming
and I hope you enjoy the film.

(hinges squeaking)
Hey, sweetie, you finally made it.
[Lynn] I know it took way
longer than I thought it would.
Honey, our baby's home.
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
[Lynn] Mom.
[Mother] Oh, it's so
good to see you baby.
Oh.
Your 21-year-old baby is hungry.
Well, I'm glad I thought ahead
and bought your favorite peanut butter.
[Lynn] Ooh, thank you.
So how's that GPA?
I think it's good.
Sweetheart.
3.1.
You're good.
I was worried about that
Carter distracting you.
(bullet toy popping)
Dad.
Sorry, I was aiming for your head.
(gun toy clicks)
Dang, that was close.
(switch clicking)
Very funny, dad.
Too bad I'm not afraid of the dark.
(cabinet squeaking)
(button clicking)
(soft footsteps thumping)
(plastic thudding)
(soft footsteps thumping)
Dad?
(gentle ominous music)
(Lynn gasping)
(Lynn sobbing)
Dad.
Mom?
Mom.
(windows rattle)
(Lynn whimpering)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
Hello?

(birds chirping)
[Woman] Got a light?
No, sorry.
When you get to be my age,
life goes by pretty fast.
One second, you're turning 40.
Next minute, you're 55.
Still smoking.
You don't look 55.
Shut up.
If I don't look at, I sure acted.
You probably think I just old and boring.
Who are you here for?
My parents.
Sorry, child.
It's one thing to lose a lover.
People don't tell you
how bad it's gonna hurt
when your parents go.
I've been coming here way too long.
People talk about moving on
like it's buying a house,
but it's not.
What's it like?
Quick sand.
The more you try to get out,
the more it just pulls you back in.
God, I miss him.
(woman sniffling)
Can always come home
after a long day at work
still with a smile on his face.
He'd say, baby, let's go do something.
Where do you wanna go?
Take me anywhere.
(woman sniffling)
Stay all night even if he
had to work the next morning.
After he was killed,
I just kept going to the
police station again and again.
I knew there wasn't
anything else I could do,
but I just felt like I
should have done more.
I'm sure he knows that.
Cops never even got a name,
just a random killing.
He didn't even have any cash.
(suspenseful music)
What more could you have done?
Hunted the bastard down
and killed him myself.
Probably would've died but
been better off all around.
(latch clicks)
(gentle brooding music)
(doorknob rattles)
(man faintly speaking)
(doorknob rattles)
(door thuds)
(gentle brooding music ends)
(tense suspenseful music)
(keyboard clicking)
(gun rattling)
(gun booming)
(tense suspenseful music)
(spirited suspenseful music)
(gun booming)
(gentle brooding music)
Third time's the charm.
I really hope you want this.
What do you mean?
Well, once you're in,
there's no going back.
Maybe.
Suit yourself.
Report tomorrow at 2,100 hours.
Your target's a hacker rat of Chicago.
He wiped out a couple of our
former agents retirement funds.
I need you to take him out clean.
Meet me back here.
All goes well, be an agency asset.
(door rattling)
(door thuds)
(footsteps thumping)
(keys clacking)
(lock clicking)
(door thuds)
Oh my gosh.
Please, don't do this.
Not here to negotiate.
Look, I can get you the money back.
I can do it right now.
[Lynn] Make it happen.
Okay, done.
You still gonna kill me?
Get out.
(trunk blipping)
(gentle ominous music)
(trunk thuds)
Says he gave the money back.
Yeah.
Check accounts ending in 2148 and 7649.
Money's there.
I figured we could use him.
He's supposed to be a
bloody stain right now,
but, I guess, the agent
says appreciates you
keeping collateral down.
So am I in?
Oh, you're in.
What held you back?
[Lynn] From?
Finishing him off?
Figured everybody
deserves a second chance.
That's gonna change real fast.
Maybe, but who knows?
Maybe you'll learn a thing
two from me down the line.
It's plausible.
(car revving)
(tense suspenseful music)
(doorknob rattles)
Gotta say I'm impressed with you.
Pulling a stunt like that ain't easy.
Thank you.
I wish I could have met you in person,
but work acting me tied up.
How would you like to do some recon?
I think I can handle that.
Great.
I'll send you the details.
(telephone thudding)
(knuckles rapping)
Come in.
So you're working late tonight?
(Daniel laughing)
Well, I figured you left already
to get an early start on retirement.
There's plenty of time for that.
Besides, I wanna say goodbye.
Now, why you getting all sappy on me now?
It must be the gray hairs, you know,
softening me up a little bit.
Yeah, right.
[Blake] So you got a new recruit?
[Daniel] Yeah, man.
She's something.
She's gonna be okay.
[Blake] Yeah, they don't
make 'em like they used to.
(gentle suspenseful music)
No.
No, they don't.
Make 'em a lot different now.
[Blake] I hear you.
[Daniel] But at least I know why.
Well, if you ever need
me, come and find me.
Yeah, I bet.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(tense dramatic music)
(phone buzzing)
(door rattling)
[Director] How's Ryder?
She's doing all right.
Dan's got her run into
recon mission right now.
[Director] Well, I'm hoping
she'll get a lead on Argyle.
Dan has to be protecting him somehow.
There's no way he would survive this long.
Maybe.
(door rattling)
Dan knows how to build trust.
He gets attached too easily.
If he was smart, he wouldn't trust anybody.
Do you think Alec knows
anything about Ranker?
I don't know, but if
Alec's working with Dan,
should be ashamed of
something happened to him.
Then let's do a test.
If Alec is aiding Dan and
hiding Argyle's tracks,
then that's reasonable grounds
for both of their termination.
All I need to do is produce
some incriminating evidence
of Alec saying killing agent Ryder.
If Dan sweeps it under
the rug, then we got him.
You think Dan will buy it?
I don't know.
It might be the only shot we got.
I'm gonna get some
security footage of Ryder
and I'll send it over
to you when it's ready.
Make sure Dan knows it comes
from an anonymous source.
Roger that.
And get an asset to take Ryder offline.
If we're gonna fake her death,
we don't need her walking
around in broad daylight.
I'll take care.
(tense suspenseful music)
(footsteps crunching)
(birds chirping)
(footsteps crunching)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(birds chirping)
Today is a great day.
[Computer] Bluetooth disconnected.
If you kindly toss that
weapon, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.
(tense dramatic music)
King of the jungle.
(elevator dinging)
(tense suspenseful music)
Sir, you gotta see this.
What in the world?
[Agent] Came from an anonymous source.
Where's Alec?
Right down the hall.
Send him to interrogation.
(doorknob rattling)
Take a look at that
and tell me what you see.
(tense suspenseful music)
It's not possible.
When was that taken?
That's not relevant now.
Ryder, she's nowhere to be found.
And I was hoping you would come clean
about where her body is.
Dan, I'm telling you that video is fake.
Now, if you can tell me when it was taken,
I can retrace my steps,
give you some solid alibis.
You know I wouldn't do something like this.
All right, let's take
a step back for a moment.
Someone would go out of their
way to make a fake video
of you killing a brand new CIA recruit.
Why?
I don't know.
Then I'm forced to
believe that it's real.
Why don't you come clean
about where her body is?
Because I didn't do it.
You really think I killed her?
I'm sorry, Alec, but I
can't let you go unpunished.
It wouldn't be right.
What happened to innocent
until proven guilty?
In the real world, sure,
but this is the CIA,
lots of strings attached.
And I hate that you would
sacrifice a clean record
just for the sake of principle.
Principle.
Is that what you think this is?
Who am I to stand against you?
I'm just a mindless drone.
Alec.
What do you want from me?
Call it whatever you want.
But in my world, this is injustice.
You know what?
Maybe.
Maybe your world's a better place
with no crime, no injustice.
But this isn't your world, Alec.
It's a fall in one, mismanaged
by men who dwell in it.
And it's my job, my job
to protect this country
from people who intend to harm it.
Listen, I didn't wanna have to do this,
but you leave me no choice.
I'm gonna have to put you
in solitary confinement indefinitely.
I gave you a chance.
If admitting to something I didn't do
is what you call a chance,
nothing can save me.
(tense suspenseful music)
(doorknob rattles)
Dancing Alec to the box.
I already saw the security footage.
We can roll him out.
[Agent] So what now?
Now, we wait.
(gentle foreboding music)
[Lynn] What do you want?
From you?
I don't know what the hell you give me.
Kiss goodnight and doubt it.
(drill hissing)
You look like a heartbreaker.
Aw.
That means so much coming
from a hairless rat.
Ouch.
I'm just a poor man trying
to make his way in the world.
I'm gonna take a wild guess here.
I know who you're looking for.
Where is he?
Right now, he's running a
little boutique in Santa Monica.
Now, here's absolutely fabulous location.
Shut up.
You want money?
I, I'll get it for you.
Just tell me where he is.
I bet you make mom and daddy very proud.
(Lynn exclaiming)
Has anyone ever told you how sexy you look
when you're angry?
Because I'm in love.
I promise you, if I ever see you again,
you are a dead man.
(kidnapper sniffing)
I think you bit off
more than you can chew.
(gentle brooding music)
For some reason, I think
I know what you're thinking.
(Daniel scoffing)
How's that?
We're creatures of habit
some more than others.
That obvious?
Well, considering you work for the CIA,
I expected you to have
more of a poker face.
I'm dealing with a situation at work
where I'm not sure how to handle it.
I think I put my faith in the wrong person
except this time.
This time, somebody died.
Babe, I'm sure you did
everything you could.
I gotta go.
(gentle brooding music)
(tense suspenseful music)
(elevator dinging)
(tense suspenseful music)
Where'd you get that video from?
Anonymous source, like I told you.
How stupid do you think I am?
I don't know what you're trying
to pull, but it ends today.
You're gonna regret this.
Alec, I made a mistake.
Someone produced that video.
[Alec] I knew it.
Looks like I made a few enemies.
Look, this has nothing to do with you.
This whole charade was nothing
but a test of my loyalty to the agency.
[Alec] Well, hopefully, you passed
even if it was in my expense.
I'm sorry about that, but
you can forgive me later.
Look, Ryder's back online.
Can you facilitate a rendezvous?
[Alec] Sure thing.
(tense dramatic music)
(car revving)
(tense dramatic music)
(wheels rustling)
(tense dramatic music)
[Director] Do I need to
book a flight down there?
Maybe.
Just got can't.
[Director] Tell the asset
to bring Ryder online.
[Agent] Got it. Will do.
(door thuds)
(car engine revving)
(tense dramatic music)
Hey, there you are.
Hop in.
Glad to see you back in one piece.
Happens to the best of us.
Not gonna lie.
I got caught up with some thumb wrestlers
in Taiwan a while back.
They were some bad guys.
Had really strong thumbs.
One of them didn't have any
eyes, told me he lost them
after diving head first in a coral reef.
Please stop.
It's true.
See urchin second right here.
That's why I stay away from the ocean.
Everything in there can
cut, bite or sting you.
I got attacked by a jellyfish
last time I was there.
Jellyfish don't attack people.
This one did.
I'm telling you this got it out for me.
I find it hard to believe
that you were captured
by thumb wrestlers.
Well, trust me, I wasn't too
happy during the debriefing.
I kept calling 'em arm wrestlers,
but the polygraph found me out.
So somewhere there's a report
detailing how I was captured
by an underground thumb wrestling ring.
I guess there are worse
things to have on file.
Oh, yeah.
You got something?
(gentle brooding music)
No.
Come on. There's gotta be
something juicy in there.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(keyboard clicking)
(phone ringing)
Hey, baby.
Sarah, listen to me.
I had to take action.
What's going on?
Some men are gonna come
to our house and take you.
What did you do?
[Daniel] The right thing.
They're gonna use you
as leverage against me.
Don't run, don't fight.
They can't lay a finger on you.
Daniel, please tell me
Sarah, I have to go.
Trust me, everything's gonna be fine.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(phone buzzing)
It is confirmed.
Dan is protecting Argyle.
You want me to take him out?
No, he's no good to us dead.
I'm sending a team to pick up Sarah.
I need you to lay low, but
your work here is done.
Yes, sir.
(tense dramatic music)
(phone buzzing)
Hello.
[Director] What did
I ever do to you, Dan?
Absolutely nothing.
This is about what you didn't do.
And what would that be, Dan?
Destroying rancor
when you had the chance.
Instead, you exiled the creator
and you'll weaponize it for yourself.
I feel like you're being
a little shortsighted
about this, Dan.
Look, the CIA is done
for me and so are you.
(gentle dramatic music)
(gentle brooding music)
(water splashing)
(phone buzzing)
I know who you're looking for.
[Lynn] Really?
Check your email.
(gentle ominous music)
It is time for you to know the truth.
The truth?
If you've known who he is and
where he is this whole time,
then why now?
Because I'm not in charge anymore.
I've sent you Argyle's coordinates.
Find him.
He'll tell you everything.
(tense suspenseful music)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
(upbeat dramatic music)
(gun clicking)
(car engine revving)
(footsteps thumping)
I think you know why I'm here.
You took Sarah.
Did you really expect me
to leave her completely off the hook?
No. I just want her safe.
Of course. Where is it?
[Daniel] Where's what?
Argyle.
His file is gone.
You of all people should
know the consequences
of deleting valuable information.
Either tell me where it is
or I watch you kill anybody
you could have given it to.
In that case, you're
gonna need some popcorn
'cause I've spoken to a
lot of people recently.
Not really.
My job is to defend this
country from threats
both foreign and domestic.
Far be it for me to turn a blind eye
to a problem that's been
around for way too long.
Are you gonna be a problem for me?
That depends upon Sarah.
You lay one finger on her
and there will be trouble.
Well then, let's make
sure that doesn't happen.
Deal?
Deal.
(car engine purring)
(door clanking)
(hinges squeaking)
(hinges squeaking)
(machine thudding)
(shoes clacking)
(latch rattles)
(shoes clacking)
(door clanking)
(shoes clacking)
(Argyle breathes heavily)
I have dreaded this day.
If you have ears to hear, let them hear me.
You must know I intend to die by your hand.
But before that happens,
I'd like to explain why.
You remember your parents
and they were good to you
and you were given a white 1978 Camaro
on your 16th birthday.
Go on.
(gentle ominous music)
This is your actual 16th birthday.
What?
Your life was a nightmare.
When you were 19, I found
you naked in a gutter.
My wife and I took you in.
At the time, I worked for
this program designed to care
for trauma patients and
veterans suffering PTSD.
We created this drug rancor.
It was made to take the bad memories
and replace them with new ones.
It was 97% effective.
97% of the patients fully recovered.
The agency loved my work on rancor.
They wanted to weaponize this drug.
I did everything within
my power to stop them.
In the end, it just put
a target on my back.
I had to leave.
I've been running ever since.
So the agency gave me rancor
and replaced my memories
with once of my parents being murdered.
The ultimate goal is to
create eager candidates
who wanna join the agency.
And that's exactly what
happened to you, isn't it?
It is.
See, the fact that I exist in your memory
as a villain is proof of
the drug's effectiveness.
It could have been anybody,
anybody the agency wanted killed.
How many agents got rancor?
Too many.
And the worst part is the drug
can be administered multiple times,
allowing for various global threats
to be transplanted into
one person's trauma.
It sounds like you have
to give that speech often.
More often than I like.
Call me Argyle.
Well, Argyle, do you have a hit list?
(gentle apprehensive music)
Indeed, I do.
Let's start at the top.
(man clears throat)
How bad is it?
Nothing we haven't dealt with before.
It's not what I wanted to hear.
I've had my people follow
up on our lead for Argyle.
He's gone.
And have you heard from Ryder?
[Agent] No.
I hope you take care of this.
You came highly recommended.
Yes, I did.
(knuckles rapping)
Hey, what's up, old timer?
Officially retired.
All right. Feels good, does it?
Oh my god.
Yes, it does.
Come on in, man.
Make yourself at home.
(hinges squeaking)
I wasn't the one that
mentioned skid marks.
(Daniel laughing)
Is that what you wear dark
underwear, right? (laughs)
Something like that.
Be quiet about that though.
What, man?
What are we?
What are we, 12?
I still feel like I'm 16 years old driving,
trying not to get a ticket.
And that didn't work out
too well for you, did it?
And at least I didn't lose my license.
[Blake] Man, that was
just bad luck right there.
(chuckles) Oh, it could
have been a lot worse
for the both of us.
You know, I'm just
surprised that we turned out
as good as we did.
Hey, what was that spaceship
thing you used to drive
when we were high school?
Oh, you're talking about the pacer.
Man, I still wish you had it today.
Kids today, bet you, they
think it's cool right now.
No, they wouldn't.
You can't put a lot of stock
into what these kids are saying today.
It's not even the same world.
No, it ain't.
I'm just glad we didn't
have cameras on our phones
when we were growing up.
[Daniel] Amen.
[Blake] Feels like the world
is getting more dangerous every day.
I'm not arguing with you.
I just got the sneaky suspicion
that it was always like this.
We know what's going on
around the world all the time.
Sometimes life's better
when your head is buried in the sand.
I know.
Eh, I better be leaving.
All right, brother.
All right.
Always good to see you.
You too, man.
You too. Good to see you, boy.
Yep.
All right.
(gentle ominous music)
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
(fire crackling)
I bet you she's the quarterback.
And if she is, all eyes
are gonna be on her.
So now we just have to figure
out who the linebackers are.
Not really, more like the head coach.
Right.
(Argyle laughing)
[Argyle] You don't watch football.
I know what it is.
I mean, it is possible that
she's connected to all this.
But why would she bother with you though?
Government agencies don't take kindly
to conscientious employees.
(Argyle exhales sharply)
Most ideas start out with the hope
of bettering society, but
the road to hell is paved
with good intentions.
Truly there must be some others out there
who know what's going on.
Yeah, they know.
They just don't care.
(gentle foreboding music)
But you worked for them.
You saw how they took
what you intended for good
and used it for evil.
You chose to fight back.
Yeah, I did.
What'd that get me?
I lost my marriage, my citizenship.
Not to mention every dime I ever see.
I'm sorry.
I show my face out there.
I get pulled over anything.
No trial, no lawyers.
I'm finished.
This is my refuge.
Even the place where you found
me, it's been compromised.
Do you know where your wife is?
Yes, I do.
She visits a gravestone every day
thinking her husband was
shot and killed by a mother.
They gave her rancor?
One time I came home and
she had no memory of me.
She didn't even know who I was.
I know why people don't stand
up for what they believe in.
It's fear.
People who have everything
to lose, they will comply.
But you didn't.
Why?
Evil wins if good men do nothing.
Out there, they laugh at the idea
of a tyrannical government.
Well, except those who've
actually lived through one
and those smart enough
to look back on history.
Unlike most people, you
got nothing left to lose.
But I did lose something.
Even if it was fake,
I believed what I had was real.
I understand.
That's actually the part I'm
having the most trouble with,
finding the point where
my life becomes real.
I remember you came to visit me.
Yeah, I did.
I don't remember what you said.
I was terrified.
Sometimes my nightmares
try and fill in the blanks.
Humans remember traumatic
events better than anything,
and that's what makes their
version of rancor so effective.
(gentle brooding music)
I've known you for a long, a long time.
You won't remember that.
You're scared.
And even if I tell you why,
you, you won't understand that.
Not right now.
I do not wanna hurt you.
You will hate me.
You will scour the earth to try to find me,
to try to kill me.
There ain't nothing,
nothing I can do about that.
I understand that now.
Then you also understand we need help.
I think I might know someone.
(tense suspenseful music)
[Man] Ah.
(man grunting)
(man growling)
(body slamming)
(man grunting)
(man breathing heavily)
Come on.
(man breathing heavily)
(man grunting)
(knuckles smacking)
(knees smacking)
(tense dramatic music)
(foot smacking)
(body slamming)
(body slamming)
I think I still got it.
Yeah.
Thanks.
(tense dramatic music)
(Lynn clapping)
Hopefully that wasn't too boring for you.
I could hardly keep myself awake.
What's you got?
You know where he is?
No, but I can find out.
Well, if you're not too
busy, I could use your help.
Anything you need, I'm there.
Is anybody looking for me?
Those conversations go
way over my clearance level.
Let's assume that I've made allies
with an enemy of the agency.
Hence, this conversation never happened.
Gotcha.
(gentle apprehensive music)
I hope that you understand
that your efforts will
be handsomely rewarded.
Not my concern.
You don't like our arrangement.
I don't have to worry about you, do I?
You tell me.
Daniel, you served the agency for years
unwavering in your defensive freedom.
Now with your duty absolved,
a precious life hangs in the balance.
Would you like to speak to her?
Sarah.
Daniel, are you okay?
[Daniel] Don't worry, I'm fine.
Won't be much longer.
Love you.
I love you too.
You of all people should
know how dangerous it is
to love someone you could so easily lose.
I look forward to hearing from you.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(metal clanking)
[Alec] Hey, man.
How you doing?
(Daniel laughing)
Enjoying retirement.
Dude, that is awesome.
Yeah. Fun to drive around too.
I bet.
So what brings you around here?
Oh, me and Ryder got some things cooking.
Y'all doing a job together?
Something like that.
You looking for this?
(tense dramatic music)
(gun booms)
Shut it down.
You wanna kiss me now?
What's going on?
Help me up.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Sorry.
[Alec] Explain.
They took Sarah just
like I expect them to.
Hopefully she won't ever find that out.
I didn't plan for this.
Just like I didn't plan
for you to be here today.
Exactly how much of this was planned?
Peterman gave me a hit list.
You and Ryder were my next targets.
That explains the fake bullets.
They can see and hear everything I did.
(gentle suspenseful music)
They're gonna be coming for us.
Yeah, you.
Yeah. (laughs)
But me, I'm dead.
I guess, you are.
They'll have to let Sarah go.
Right on.
Now, we got some work to do.
(gentle suspenseful music)
We're here because?
I got a copy of Peterman's schedule.
She's having a meeting here.
You brought the speaker, right?
Yes.
Okay.
Place the speaker.
I'll give you the cue to press play.
When she gets in the
car, you can follow her.
Aye, aye, captain.
(tense suspenseful music)
[Computer] Bluetooth connected.
(phone buzzing)
[Alec] I found Dan.
Excellent.
Meet me at the statue of Joseph, midnight.
I'll be bringing a friend.
[Alec] You've got it.
(tense suspenseful music)
You in position?
[Lynn] Roger that.
(door thuds)
On my mark.
Three, two, one, play.
(gunfire popping)
(tense suspenseful music)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
All right. She's getting in the car.
Go, go, go.
Sleep tight.
Lynn?
Lynn, what's going on?
(tense suspenseful music)
(rain pattering)
(thunder rumbling)
(tense foreboding music)
How much longer?
She's almost done.
When we're through with her,
there won't be anything left.
Think about it.
The ability to change someone's future
by altering their past.
When RD finishes the commercial variant,
my great, great grandchildren
won't have to lift a finger
for anything.
What about mine?
And that's up to you.
Or maybe it's actually up to me.
Your superb efforts have done
nothing but aid our enemies.
Sir, with all due respect,
I have put a lot of effort
into making sure this
organization runs like a top.
I don't care who you
have working for you.
I just want something that works.
Now, I've bet my cards on
your advice in the past,
but moving forward, I'm
gonna follow my own methods.
I'm sure that decision
wasn't made in haste.
Absolutely not.
You're fired.
(gentle poignant music)
(tense brooding music)
Oh, baby.
[Daniel] Are you okay?
I'm fine.
(gentle poignant music)
[Alec] I'm glad she's okay.
She's a good gal.
Where's Ryder?
I, I, I don't know.
You have any idea what she might be?
I have theories.
Ryder, as we know her, is probably dead.
What comes in her place
is far more dangerous.
Is this about Rancor?
Yes.
I thought that was just a rumor.
That's what the agency wanted.
Meanwhile, we need to come up with a plan.
Dan, listen.
I hear you, but it's too late.
They are going to send her after us.
That may be true for you.
But legally, Alec killed me.
[Blake] Y'all need
another dead man walking?
More the merrier.
[Daniel] He's legally dead too.
So at least we got that going for us.
(phone buzzing)
Look, we're glad to have you,
but you need to understand something here.
There is a high probability
that we will not make it out of this alive.
You worry about yourselves.
I don't plan on dying again anytime soon.
They fired her.
Who?
Peterman.
She wants to meet.
(dramatic music)
What happened?
You without knowing it, of
course, it's a long story.
I got time.
Alec, none of this has been personal.
It never is.
You can snuff out whoever you
want anywhere, anytime, right?
I don't expect you to
believe anything I'm saying.
You can put me down right here.
Why would I kill you?
You're not calling the shots anymore.
That's exactly why I'm here.
This country is the only thing
that I hold dear to my heart
and the powers that be have plans,
plans that I intend to terminate.
Your record precedes you
and right now, I believe
you're the only person
who could hear me out.
This is the agency's
best kept secret, Rancor.
I leak this,
the CIA and all known
associates dissolve overnight.
You and I will become wanted fugitives
and they will hunt us for
the rest of our lives.
I would've never seen this coming.
Are you sure there's no other way?
That's right.
I used to think that I was
making this world a better place.
This may actually be my
last chance to do that.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
(tense suspenseful music)
Good thing no one
follows orders around here.
Sorry not sorry.
This won't mean much, but
you're all on an apology.
Save it.
I just wanna know where Ryder is.
I can give you Ryder
and the head coach behind all of this.
Hopefully, you understand what happens
if all this turns out to be a lie.
You're all gonna get burned for this.
Hello, fire.
I never heard nobody.
Besides, we're legally dead anyway,
so there's no problem here.
Alec.
Don't worry about me.
Can you take me to Ryder?
Absolutely.
(tense suspenseful music)
(dramatic violin music)
(guns firing)
(dramatic violin music)
(guns firing)
(dramatic violin music)
(Lynn grunting)
(Lynn groaning)
(Lynn coughing)
(gentle violin music)
[Lynn] You look different.
Who are you?
[Lynn] Me.
(scoffs) I am you.
Or at least I will be.
And what's that supposed to mean?
[Lynn] You're not going
to be alive for much longer.
It's only a matter of
time before I take over.
I'm not going to let that happen.
[Lynn] It's inevitable.
Those who live by the
sword shall die by it.
I'm sure you've done
your fair share of killing.
[Lynn] You're my first.
(gentle violin music)
(shoes clanking)
(man grunting)
(gun thuds)
(gentle ominous music)
(door thuds)
I know you don't remember this.
You told me something
that stuck ever since.
Yeah.
What did I say?
You said people deserve a second chance.
I'll admit it didn't take it first,
but even though you don't remember,
I think you still believe in it.
That doesn't sound like me.
Well, whoever you are, remember today,
don't let anyone take that away from you.
I see you were smart
enough to bring back up.
Give it up, Lynn.
Don't make it any harder than it has to be.
What did you just call me?
By the name I gave you.
Oh, her.
She's dead.
Grenade.
(tense suspenseful music)
(gentle ominous music)
What are you doing?
Think of it as formatting a hard drive.
(tense suspenseful music)
(rifles booming)
(guns firing)
(rifles booming)
(gun booms)
(gun booms)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
(Lynn grunting)
As God is my witness,
I set before you life and death.
Now, choose life.
Does it live by the
sword shall die by it.
(gun booms)
We're gonna have to
keep a close eye on her.
I have a contingency plan just for that.
(water burbling)
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
[Director] I'll make you a deal.
Not here to negotiate.
[Director] I'll wipe your record.
(Argyle laughing)
I'll do it.
You won't ever have to look
over your shoulders again.
No, it's not possible.
We're actually doing you a favor.
Keep you alive.
They chase you down just
like the rest of us.
I can fix this.
[Meredith] No, you can't.
If you keep me alive,
they won't ever have to come after you.
Who is they?
Deep state.
CIA was their gun for hire.
My job was just to pull the trigger.
Within eight hours, all
personnel of the CIA
will be reabsorbed in the ATF and the FBI.
If I'm not there for that debriefing,
every former member of the CIA
will be tracked down and killed.
If you keep me alive, I
can attend that debriefing
and ensure the whole
transition just goes smoothly.
As for you and Argyle,
I can provide new documents
for the both of you in a matter of minutes.
We might need more than two.
You give me a phone
and you can have as many as you'd like.
I can assure you.
I have no plans to cross either of you.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
[Daniel] Clean slate.
[Meredith] That's what it looks like.
Even if I said hello,
she wouldn't remember me.
Right?
Let's not push our luck.
The predator is now the prey.
Wolf's gotta eat.
Not today.
Every day.
Let it go.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(gentle wistful music)
Pardon me.
Have we met?
I don't know.
You look familiar.
Hopefully, that's a good thing.
Who are you here to see?
An old friend.
She died a long time ago.
You remind me of her.
Shut up.
(Argyle laughing)
Here.
Thanks.
My pleasure.
Mind if I watch?
Well, that depends.
Are you interested in my drawing
or are you're interested in something else?
Totally just the drawing.
Not really here for anything else.
I'm also just here to critique.
Well, I suppose I could use
some constructive criticism.
Oh, I'm more than happy
to give you some constructive criticism,
but probably be easier over coffee.
That way, I can let you down easy.
(Lynn chuckling)
Wow.
I didn't realize I sucked
that bad at drawing.
You are the worst.
(gentle apprehensive music)
James.
Cassia.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(tense suspenseful music)
(tense suspenseful music ends)
Hi everyone and welcome to "Rancor."
With next to no film crew
and on a very tight budget,
the odds were against us,
but Psalm 37:4 says,
"Delight yourself in the Lord
and He will give you the
desires of your heart."
You're about to witness of
fulfillment of that desire,
which I have had for many, many years.
With that being said,
thank you all for coming
and I hope you enjoy the film.
(rain pattering)
(gentle piano music)
(film roll clicking)
(paper rattling)
(gentle apprehensive music starts)
(air thudding)
(air thudding)
(air thudding)
(air thudding)
(hinges squeaking)
(knuckles rapping)
(latch rattles)
(hinges squeaking)
Hey, sweetie, you finally made it.
[Lynn] I know it took way
longer than I thought it would.
Honey, our baby's home.
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
[Lynn] Mom.
[Mother] Oh, it's so
good to see you baby.
Oh.
Your 21-year-old baby is hungry.
Well, I'm glad I thought ahead
and bought your favorite peanut butter.
[Lynn] Ooh, thank you.
So how's that GPA?
I think it's good.
Sweetheart.
3.1.
You're good.
I was worried about that
Carter distracting you.
(bullet toy popping)
Dad.
Sorry, I was aiming for your head.
(gun toy clicks)
Dang, that was close.
(switch clicking)
Very funny, dad.
Too bad I'm not afraid of the dark.
(cabinet squeaking)
(button clicking)
(soft footsteps thumping)
(plastic thudding)
(soft footsteps thumping)
Dad?
(gentle ominous music)
(Lynn gasping)
(Lynn sobbing)
Dad.
Mom?
Mom.
(windows rattle)
(Lynn whimpering)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
Hello?
(flesh rustling)
(Lynn whimpering)
(Lynn gasping)
(gentle ominous music)
(door thuds)
(gentle ominous music)
(footstep thudding)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
(air swooshing)
(gentle brooding music)
(birds chirping)
[Woman] Got a light?
No, sorry.
When you get to be my age,
life goes by pretty fast.
One second, you're turning 40.
Next minute, you're 55.
Still smoking.
You don't look 55.
Shut up.
If I don't look at, I sure acted.
You probably think I just old and boring.
Who are you here for?
My parents.
Sorry, child.
It's one thing to lose a lover.
People don't tell you
how bad it's gonna hurt
when your parents go.
I've been coming here way too long.
People talk about moving on
like it's buying a house,
but it's not.
What's it like?
Quick sand.
The more you try to get out,
the more it just pulls you back in.
God, I miss him.
(woman sniffling)
Can always come home
after a long day at work
still with a smile on his face.
He'd say, baby, let's go do something.
Where do you wanna go?
Take me anywhere.
(woman sniffling)
Stay all night even if he
had to work the next morning.
After he was killed,
I just kept going to the
police station again and again.
I knew there wasn't
anything else I could do,
but I just felt like I
should have done more.
I'm sure he knows that.
Cops never even got a name,
just a random killing.
He didn't even have any cash.
(suspenseful music)
What more could you have done?
Hunted the bastard down
and killed him myself.
Probably would've died but
been better off all around.
(latch clicks)
(gentle brooding music)
(doorknob rattles)
(man faintly speaking)
(doorknob rattles)
(door thuds)
(gentle brooding music ends)
(tense suspenseful music)
(keyboard clicking)
(gun rattling)
(gun booming)
(tense suspenseful music)
(spirited suspenseful music)
(gun booming)
(gentle brooding music)
Third time's the charm.
I really hope you want this.
What do you mean?
Well, once you're in,
there's no going back.
Maybe.
Suit yourself.
Report tomorrow at 2,100 hours.
Your target's a hacker rat of Chicago.
He wiped out a couple of our
former agents retirement funds.
I need you to take him out clean.
Meet me back here.
All goes well, be an agency asset.
(door rattling)
(door thuds)
(footsteps thumping)
(keys clacking)
(lock clicking)
(door thuds)
Oh my gosh.
Please, don't do this.
Not here to negotiate.
Look, I can get you the money back.
I can do it right now.
[Lynn] Make it happen.
Okay, done.
You still gonna kill me?
Get out.
(trunk blipping)
(gentle ominous music)
(trunk thuds)
Says he gave the money back.
Yeah.
Check accounts ending in 2148 and 7649.
Money's there.
I figured we could use him.
He's supposed to be a
bloody stain right now,
but, I guess, the agent
says appreciates you
keeping collateral down.
So am I in?
Oh, you're in.
What held you back?
[Lynn] From?
Finishing him off?
Figured everybody
deserves a second chance.
That's gonna change real fast.
Maybe, but who knows?
Maybe you'll learn a thing
two from me down the line.
It's plausible.
(car revving)
(tense suspenseful music)
(doorknob rattles)
Gotta say I'm impressed with you.
Pulling a stunt like that ain't easy.
Thank you.
I wish I could have met you in person,
but work acting me tied up.
How would you like to do some recon?
I think I can handle that.
Great.
I'll send you the details.
(telephone thudding)
(knuckles rapping)
Come in.
So you're working late tonight?
(Daniel laughing)
Well, I figured you left already
to get an early start on retirement.
There's plenty of time for that.
Besides, I wanna say goodbye.
Now, why you getting all sappy on me now?
It must be the gray hairs, you know,
softening me up a little bit.
Yeah, right.
[Blake] So you got a new recruit?
[Daniel] Yeah, man.
She's something.
She's gonna be okay.
[Blake] Yeah, they don't
make 'em like they used to.
(gentle suspenseful music)
No.
No, they don't.
Make 'em a lot different now.
[Blake] I hear you.
[Daniel] But at least I know why.
Well, if you ever need
me, come and find me.
Yeah, I bet.
(gentle suspenseful music)
(tense dramatic music)
(phone buzzing)
(door rattling)
[Director] How's Ryder?
She's doing all right.
Dan's got her run into
recon mission right now.
[Director] Well, I'm hoping
she'll get a lead on Argyle.
Dan has to be protecting him somehow.
There's no way he would survive this long.
Maybe.
(door rattling)
Dan knows how to build trust.
He gets attached too easily.
If he was smart, he wouldn't trust anybody.
Do you think Alec knows
anything about Ranker?
I don't know, but if
Alec's working with Dan,
should be ashamed of
something happened to him.
Then let's do a test.
If Alec is aiding Dan and
hiding Argyle's tracks,
then that's reasonable grounds
for both of their termination.
All I need to do is produce
some incriminating evidence
of Alec saying killing agent Ryder.
If Dan sweeps it under
the rug, then we got him.
You think Dan will buy it?
I don't know.
It might be the only shot we got.
I'm gonna get some
security footage of Ryder
and I'll send it over
to you when it's ready.
Make sure Dan knows it comes
from an anonymous source.
Roger that.
And get an asset to take Ryder offline.
If we're gonna fake her death,
we don't need her walking
around in broad daylight.
I'll take care.
(tense suspenseful music)
(footsteps crunching)
(birds chirping)
(footsteps crunching)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
(birds chirping)
Today is a great day.
[Computer] Bluetooth disconnected.
If you kindly toss that
weapon, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.
(tense dramatic music)
King of the jungle.
(elevator dinging)
(tense suspenseful music)
Sir, you gotta see this.
What in the world?
[Agent] Came from an anonymous source.
Where's Alec?
Right down the hall.
Send him to interrogation.
(doorknob rattling)
Take a look at that
and tell me what you see.
(tense suspenseful music)
It's not possible.
When was that taken?
That's not relevant now.
Ryder, she's nowhere to be found.
And I was hoping you would come clean
about where her body is.
Dan, I'm telling you that video is fake.
Now, if you can tell me when it was taken,
I can retrace my steps,
give you some solid alibis.
You know I wouldn't do something like this.
All right, let's take
a step back for a moment.
Someone would go out of their
way to make a fake video
of you killing a brand new CIA recruit.
Why?
I don't know.
Then I'm forced to
believe that it's real.
Why don't you come clean
about where her body is?
Because I didn't do it.
You really think I killed her?
I'm sorry, Alec, but I
can't let you go unpunished.
It wouldn't be right.
What happened to innocent
until proven guilty?
In the real world, sure,
but this is the CIA,
lots of strings attached.
And I hate that you would
sacrifice a clean record
just for the sake of principle.
Principle.
Is that what you think this is?
Who am I to stand against you?
I'm just a mindless drone.
Alec.
What do you want from me?
Call it whatever you want.
But in my world, this is injustice.
You know what?
Maybe.
Maybe your world's a better place
with no crime, no injustice.
But this isn't your world, Alec.
It's a fall in one, mismanaged
by men who dwell in it.
And it's my job, my job
to protect this country
from people who intend to harm it.
Listen, I didn't wanna have to do this,
but you leave me no choice.
I'm gonna have to put you
in solitary confinement indefinitely.
I gave you a chance.
If admitting to something I didn't do
is what you call a chance,
nothing can save me.
(tense suspenseful music)
(doorknob rattles)
Dancing Alec to the box.
I already saw the security footage.
We can roll him out.
[Agent] So what now?
Now, we wait.
(gentle foreboding music)
[Lynn] What do you want?
From you?
I don't know what the hell you give me.
Kiss goodnight and doubt it.
(drill hissing)
You look like a heartbreaker.
Aw.
That means so much coming
from a hairless rat.
Ouch.
I'm just a poor man trying
to make his way in the world.
I'm gonna take a wild guess here.
I know who you're looking for.
Where is he?
Right now, he's running a
little boutique in Santa Monica.
Now, here's absolutely fabulous location.
Shut up.
You want money?
I, I'll get it for you.
Just tell me where he is.
I bet you make mom and daddy very proud.
(Lynn exclaiming)
Has anyone ever told you how sexy you look
when you're angry?
Because I'm in love.
I promise you, if I ever see you again,
you are a dead man.
(kidnapper sniffing)
I think you bit off
more than you can chew.
(gentle brooding music)
For some reason, I think
I know what you're thinking.
(Daniel scoffing)
How's that?
We're creatures of habit
some more than others.
That obvious?
Well, considering you work for the CIA,
I expected you to have
more of a poker face.
I'm dealing with a situation at work
where I'm not sure how to handle it.
I think I put my faith in the wrong person
except this time.
This time, somebody died.
Babe, I'm sure you did
everything you could.
I gotta go.
(gentle brooding music)
(tense suspenseful music)
(elevator dinging)
(tense suspenseful music)
Where'd you get that video from?
Anonymous source, like I told you.
How stupid do you think I am?
I don't know what you're trying
to pull, but it ends today.
You're gonna regret this.
Alec, I made a mistake.
Someone produced that video.
[Alec] I knew it.
Looks like I made a few enemies.
Look, this has nothing to do with you.
This whole charade was nothing
but a test of my loyalty to the agency.
[Alec] Well, hopefully, you passed
even if it was in my expense.
I'm sorry about that, but
you can forgive me later.
Look, Ryder's back online.
Can you facilitate a rendezvous?
[Alec] Sure thing.
(tense dramatic music)
(car revving)
(tense dramatic music)
(wheels rustling)
(tense dramatic music)
[Director] Do I need to
book a flight down there?
Maybe.
Just got can't.
[Director] Tell the asset
to bring Ryder online.
[Agent] Got it. Will do.
(door thuds)
(car engine revving)
(tense dramatic music)
Hey, there you are.
Hop in.
Glad to see you back in one piece.
Happens to the best of us.
Not gonna lie.
I got caught up with some thumb wrestlers
in Taiwan a while back.
They were some bad guys.
Had really strong thumbs.
One of them didn't have any
eyes, told me he lost them
after diving head first in a coral reef.
Please stop.
It's true.
See urchin second right here.
That's why I stay away from the ocean.
Everything in there can
cut, bite or sting you.
I got attacked by a jellyfish
last time I was there.
Jellyfish don't attack people.
This one did.
I'm telling you this got it out for me.
I find it hard to believe
that you were captured
by thumb wrestlers.
Well, trust me, I wasn't too
happy during the debriefing.
I kept calling 'em arm wrestlers,
but the polygraph found me out.
So somewhere there's a report
detailing how I was captured
by an underground thumb wrestling ring.
I guess there are worse
things to have on file.
Oh, yeah.
You got something?
(gentle brooding music)
No.
Come on. There's gotta be
something juicy in there.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(keyboard clicking)
(phone ringing)
Hey, baby.
Sarah, listen to me.
I had to take action.
What's going on?
Some men are gonna come
to our house and take you.
What did you do?
[Daniel] The right thing.
They're gonna use you
as leverage against me.
Don't run, don't fight.
They can't lay a finger on you.
Daniel, please tell me
Sarah, I have to go.
Trust me, everything's gonna be fine.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(phone buzzing)
It is confirmed.
Dan is protecting Argyle.
You want me to take him out?
No, he's no good to us dead.
I'm sending a team to pick up Sarah.
I need you to lay low, but
your work here is done.
Yes, sir.
(tense dramatic music)
(phone buzzing)
Hello.
[Director] What did
I ever do to you, Dan?
Absolutely nothing.
This is about what you didn't do.
And what would that be, Dan?
Destroying rancor
when you had the chance.
Instead, you exiled the creator
and you'll weaponize it for yourself.
I feel like you're being
a little shortsighted
about this, Dan.
Look, the CIA is done
for me and so are you.
(gentle dramatic music)
(gentle brooding music)
(water splashing)
(phone buzzing)
I know who you're looking for.
[Lynn] Really?
Check your email.
(gentle ominous music)
It is time for you to know the truth.
The truth?
If you've known who he is and
where he is this whole time,
then why now?
Because I'm not in charge anymore.
I've sent you Argyle's coordinates.
Find him.
He'll tell you everything.
(tense suspenseful music)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
(upbeat dramatic music)
(gun clicking)
(car engine revving)
(footsteps thumping)
I think you know why I'm here.
You took Sarah.
Did you really expect me
to leave her completely off the hook?
No. I just want her safe.
Of course. Where is it?
[Daniel] Where's what?
Argyle.
His file is gone.
You of all people should
know the consequences
of deleting valuable information.
Either tell me where it is
or I watch you kill anybody
you could have given it to.
In that case, you're
gonna need some popcorn
'cause I've spoken to a
lot of people recently.
Not really.
My job is to defend this
country from threats
both foreign and domestic.
Far be it for me to turn a blind eye
to a problem that's been
around for way too long.
Are you gonna be a problem for me?
That depends upon Sarah.
You lay one finger on her
and there will be trouble.
Well then, let's make
sure that doesn't happen.
Deal?
Deal.
(car engine purring)
(door clanking)
(hinges squeaking)
(hinges squeaking)
(machine thudding)
(shoes clacking)
(latch rattles)
(shoes clacking)
(door clanking)
(shoes clacking)
(Argyle breathes heavily)
I have dreaded this day.
If you have ears to hear, let them hear me.
You must know I intend to die by your hand.
But before that happens,
I'd like to explain why.
You remember your parents
and they were good to you
and you were given a white 1978 Camaro
on your 16th birthday.
Go on.
(gentle ominous music)
This is your actual 16th birthday.
What?
Your life was a nightmare.
When you were 19, I found
you naked in a gutter.
My wife and I took you in.
At the time, I worked for
this program designed to care
for trauma patients and
veterans suffering PTSD.
We created this drug rancor.
It was made to take the bad memories
and replace them with new ones.
It was 97% effective.
97% of the patients fully recovered.
The agency loved my work on rancor.
They wanted to weaponize this drug.
I did everything within
my power to stop them.
In the end, it just put
a target on my back.
I had to leave.
I've been running ever since.
So the agency gave me rancor
and replaced my memories
with once of my parents being murdered.
The ultimate goal is to
create eager candidates
who wanna join the agency.
And that's exactly what
happened to you, isn't it?
It is.
See, the fact that I exist in your memory
as a villain is proof of
the drug's effectiveness.
It could have been anybody,
anybody the agency wanted killed.
How many agents got rancor?
Too many.
And the worst part is the drug
can be administered multiple times,
allowing for various global threats
to be transplanted into
one person's trauma.
It sounds like you have
to give that speech often.
More often than I like.
Call me Argyle.
Well, Argyle, do you have a hit list?
(gentle apprehensive music)
Indeed, I do.
Let's start at the top.
(man clears throat)
How bad is it?
Nothing we haven't dealt with before.
It's not what I wanted to hear.
I've had my people follow
up on our lead for Argyle.
He's gone.
And have you heard from Ryder?
[Agent] No.
I hope you take care of this.
You came highly recommended.
Yes, I did.
(knuckles rapping)
Hey, what's up, old timer?
Officially retired.
All right. Feels good, does it?
Oh my god.
Yes, it does.
Come on in, man.
Make yourself at home.
(hinges squeaking)
I wasn't the one that
mentioned skid marks.
(Daniel laughing)
Is that what you wear dark
underwear, right? (laughs)
Something like that.
Be quiet about that though.
What, man?
What are we?
What are we, 12?
I still feel like I'm 16 years old driving,
trying not to get a ticket.
And that didn't work out
too well for you, did it?
And at least I didn't lose my license.
[Blake] Man, that was
just bad luck right there.
(chuckles) Oh, it could
have been a lot worse
for the both of us.
You know, I'm just
surprised that we turned out
as good as we did.
Hey, what was that spaceship
thing you used to drive
when we were high school?
Oh, you're talking about the pacer.
Man, I still wish you had it today.
Kids today, bet you, they
think it's cool right now.
No, they wouldn't.
You can't put a lot of stock
into what these kids are saying today.
It's not even the same world.
No, it ain't.
I'm just glad we didn't
have cameras on our phones
when we were growing up.
[Daniel] Amen.
[Blake] Feels like the world
is getting more dangerous every day.
I'm not arguing with you.
I just got the sneaky suspicion
that it was always like this.
We know what's going on
around the world all the time.
Sometimes life's better
when your head is buried in the sand.
I know.
Eh, I better be leaving.
All right, brother.
All right.
Always good to see you.
You too, man.
You too. Good to see you, boy.
Yep.
All right.
(gentle ominous music)
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
(fire crackling)
I bet you she's the quarterback.
And if she is, all eyes
are gonna be on her.
So now we just have to figure
out who the linebackers are.
Not really, more like the head coach.
Right.
(Argyle laughing)
[Argyle] You don't watch football.
I know what it is.
I mean, it is possible that
she's connected to all this.
But why would she bother with you though?
Government agencies don't take kindly
to conscientious employees.
(Argyle exhales sharply)
Most ideas start out with the hope
of bettering society, but
the road to hell is paved
with good intentions.
Truly there must be some others out there
who know what's going on.
Yeah, they know.
They just don't care.
(gentle foreboding music)
But you worked for them.
You saw how they took
what you intended for good
and used it for evil.
You chose to fight back.
Yeah, I did.
What'd that get me?
I lost my marriage, my citizenship.
Not to mention every dime I ever see.
I'm sorry.
I show my face out there.
I get pulled over anything.
No trial, no lawyers.
I'm finished.
This is my refuge.
Even the place where you found
me, it's been compromised.
Do you know where your wife is?
Yes, I do.
She visits a gravestone every day
thinking her husband was
shot and killed by a mother.
They gave her rancor?
One time I came home and
she had no memory of me.
She didn't even know who I was.
I know why people don't stand
up for what they believe in.
It's fear.
People who have everything
to lose, they will comply.
But you didn't.
Why?
Evil wins if good men do nothing.
Out there, they laugh at the idea
of a tyrannical government.
Well, except those who've
actually lived through one
and those smart enough
to look back on history.
Unlike most people, you
got nothing left to lose.
But I did lose something.
Even if it was fake,
I believed what I had was real.
I understand.
That's actually the part I'm
having the most trouble with,
finding the point where
my life becomes real.
I remember you came to visit me.
Yeah, I did.
I don't remember what you said.
I was terrified.
Sometimes my nightmares
try and fill in the blanks.
Humans remember traumatic
events better than anything,
and that's what makes their
version of rancor so effective.
(gentle brooding music)
I've known you for a long, a long time.
You won't remember that.
You're scared.
And even if I tell you why,
you, you won't understand that.
Not right now.
I do not wanna hurt you.
You will hate me.
You will scour the earth to try to find me,
to try to kill me.
There ain't nothing,
nothing I can do about that.
I understand that now.
Then you also understand we need help.
I think I might know someone.
(tense suspenseful music)
[Man] Ah.
(man grunting)
(man growling)
(body slamming)
(man grunting)
(man breathing heavily)
Come on.
(man breathing heavily)
(man grunting)
(knuckles smacking)
(knees smacking)
(tense dramatic music)
(foot smacking)
(body slamming)
(body slamming)
I think I still got it.
Yeah.
Thanks.
(tense dramatic music)
(Lynn clapping)
Hopefully that wasn't too boring for you.
I could hardly keep myself awake.
What's you got?
You know where he is?
No, but I can find out.
Well, if you're not too
busy, I could use your help.
Anything you need, I'm there.
Is anybody looking for me?
Those conversations go
way over my clearance level.
Let's assume that I've made allies
with an enemy of the agency.
Hence, this conversation never happened.
Gotcha.
(gentle apprehensive music)
I hope that you understand
that your efforts will
be handsomely rewarded.
Not my concern.
You don't like our arrangement.
I don't have to worry about you, do I?
You tell me.
Daniel, you served the agency for years
unwavering in your defensive freedom.
Now with your duty absolved,
a precious life hangs in the balance.
Would you like to speak to her?
Sarah.
Daniel, are you okay?
[Daniel] Don't worry, I'm fine.
Won't be much longer.
Love you.
I love you too.
You of all people should
know how dangerous it is
to love someone you could so easily lose.
I look forward to hearing from you.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(metal clanking)
[Alec] Hey, man.
How you doing?
(Daniel laughing)
Enjoying retirement.
Dude, that is awesome.
Yeah. Fun to drive around too.
I bet.
So what brings you around here?
Oh, me and Ryder got some things cooking.
Y'all doing a job together?
Something like that.
You looking for this?
(tense dramatic music)
(gun booms)
Shut it down.
You wanna kiss me now?
What's going on?
Help me up.
(gentle suspenseful music)
Sorry.
[Alec] Explain.
They took Sarah just
like I expect them to.
Hopefully she won't ever find that out.
I didn't plan for this.
Just like I didn't plan
for you to be here today.
Exactly how much of this was planned?
Peterman gave me a hit list.
You and Ryder were my next targets.
That explains the fake bullets.
They can see and hear everything I did.
(gentle suspenseful music)
They're gonna be coming for us.
Yeah, you.
Yeah. (laughs)
But me, I'm dead.
I guess, you are.
They'll have to let Sarah go.
Right on.
Now, we got some work to do.
(gentle suspenseful music)
We're here because?
I got a copy of Peterman's schedule.
She's having a meeting here.
You brought the speaker, right?
Yes.
Okay.
Place the speaker.
I'll give you the cue to press play.
When she gets in the
car, you can follow her.
Aye, aye, captain.
(tense suspenseful music)
[Computer] Bluetooth connected.
(phone buzzing)
[Alec] I found Dan.
Excellent.
Meet me at the statue of Joseph, midnight.
I'll be bringing a friend.
[Alec] You've got it.
(tense suspenseful music)
You in position?
[Lynn] Roger that.
(door thuds)
On my mark.
Three, two, one, play.
(gunfire popping)
(tense suspenseful music)
(gunfire popping)
(gunfire popping)
All right. She's getting in the car.
Go, go, go.
Sleep tight.
Lynn?
Lynn, what's going on?
(tense suspenseful music)
(rain pattering)
(thunder rumbling)
(tense foreboding music)
How much longer?
She's almost done.
When we're through with her,
there won't be anything left.
Think about it.
The ability to change someone's future
by altering their past.
When RD finishes the commercial variant,
my great, great grandchildren
won't have to lift a finger
for anything.
What about mine?
And that's up to you.
Or maybe it's actually up to me.
Your superb efforts have done
nothing but aid our enemies.
Sir, with all due respect,
I have put a lot of effort
into making sure this
organization runs like a top.
I don't care who you
have working for you.
I just want something that works.
Now, I've bet my cards on
your advice in the past,
but moving forward, I'm
gonna follow my own methods.
I'm sure that decision
wasn't made in haste.
Absolutely not.
You're fired.
(gentle poignant music)
(tense brooding music)
Oh, baby.
[Daniel] Are you okay?
I'm fine.
(gentle poignant music)
[Alec] I'm glad she's okay.
She's a good gal.
Where's Ryder?
I, I, I don't know.
You have any idea what she might be?
I have theories.
Ryder, as we know her, is probably dead.
What comes in her place
is far more dangerous.
Is this about Rancor?
Yes.
I thought that was just a rumor.
That's what the agency wanted.
Meanwhile, we need to come up with a plan.
Dan, listen.
I hear you, but it's too late.
They are going to send her after us.
That may be true for you.
But legally, Alec killed me.
[Blake] Y'all need
another dead man walking?
More the merrier.
[Daniel] He's legally dead too.
So at least we got that going for us.
(phone buzzing)
Look, we're glad to have you,
but you need to understand something here.
There is a high probability
that we will not make it out of this alive.
You worry about yourselves.
I don't plan on dying again anytime soon.
They fired her.
Who?
Peterman.
She wants to meet.
(dramatic music)
What happened?
You without knowing it, of
course, it's a long story.
I got time.
Alec, none of this has been personal.
It never is.
You can snuff out whoever you
want anywhere, anytime, right?
I don't expect you to
believe anything I'm saying.
You can put me down right here.
Why would I kill you?
You're not calling the shots anymore.
That's exactly why I'm here.
This country is the only thing
that I hold dear to my heart
and the powers that be have plans,
plans that I intend to terminate.
Your record precedes you
and right now, I believe
you're the only person
who could hear me out.
This is the agency's
best kept secret, Rancor.
I leak this,
the CIA and all known
associates dissolve overnight.
You and I will become wanted fugitives
and they will hunt us for
the rest of our lives.
I would've never seen this coming.
Are you sure there's no other way?
That's right.
I used to think that I was
making this world a better place.
This may actually be my
last chance to do that.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
(tense suspenseful music)
Good thing no one
follows orders around here.
Sorry not sorry.
This won't mean much, but
you're all on an apology.
Save it.
I just wanna know where Ryder is.
I can give you Ryder
and the head coach behind all of this.
Hopefully, you understand what happens
if all this turns out to be a lie.
You're all gonna get burned for this.
Hello, fire.
I never heard nobody.
Besides, we're legally dead anyway,
so there's no problem here.
Alec.
Don't worry about me.
Can you take me to Ryder?
Absolutely.
(tense suspenseful music)
(dramatic violin music)
(guns firing)
(dramatic violin music)
(guns firing)
(dramatic violin music)
(Lynn grunting)
(Lynn groaning)
(Lynn coughing)
(gentle violin music)
[Lynn] You look different.
Who are you?
[Lynn] Me.
(scoffs) I am you.
Or at least I will be.
And what's that supposed to mean?
[Lynn] You're not going
to be alive for much longer.
It's only a matter of
time before I take over.
I'm not going to let that happen.
[Lynn] It's inevitable.
Those who live by the
sword shall die by it.
I'm sure you've done
your fair share of killing.
[Lynn] You're my first.
(gentle violin music)
(shoes clanking)
(man grunting)
(gun thuds)
(gentle ominous music)
(door thuds)
I know you don't remember this.
You told me something
that stuck ever since.
Yeah.
What did I say?
You said people deserve a second chance.
I'll admit it didn't take it first,
but even though you don't remember,
I think you still believe in it.
That doesn't sound like me.
Well, whoever you are, remember today,
don't let anyone take that away from you.
I see you were smart
enough to bring back up.
Give it up, Lynn.
Don't make it any harder than it has to be.
What did you just call me?
By the name I gave you.
Oh, her.
She's dead.
Grenade.
(tense suspenseful music)
(gentle ominous music)
What are you doing?
Think of it as formatting a hard drive.
(tense suspenseful music)
(rifles booming)
(guns firing)
(rifles booming)
(gun booms)
(gun booms)
(Lynn breathing heavily)
(Lynn grunting)
As God is my witness,
I set before you life and death.
Now, choose life.
Does it live by the
sword shall die by it.
(gun booms)
We're gonna have to
keep a close eye on her.
I have a contingency plan just for that.
(water burbling)
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
[Director] I'll make you a deal.
Not here to negotiate.
[Director] I'll wipe your record.
(Argyle laughing)
I'll do it.
You won't ever have to look
over your shoulders again.
No, it's not possible.
We're actually doing you a favor.
Keep you alive.
They chase you down just
like the rest of us.
I can fix this.
[Meredith] No, you can't.
If you keep me alive,
they won't ever have to come after you.
Who is they?
Deep state.
CIA was their gun for hire.
My job was just to pull the trigger.
Within eight hours, all
personnel of the CIA
will be reabsorbed in the ATF and the FBI.
If I'm not there for that debriefing,
every former member of the CIA
will be tracked down and killed.
If you keep me alive, I
can attend that debriefing
and ensure the whole
transition just goes smoothly.
As for you and Argyle,
I can provide new documents
for the both of you in a matter of minutes.
We might need more than two.
You give me a phone
and you can have as many as you'd like.
I can assure you.
I have no plans to cross either of you.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(hinges squeaking)
(door thuds)
[Daniel] Clean slate.
[Meredith] That's what it looks like.
Even if I said hello,
she wouldn't remember me.
Right?
Let's not push our luck.
The predator is now the prey.
Wolf's gotta eat.
Not today.
Every day.
Let it go.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(gentle wistful music)
Pardon me.
Have we met?
I don't know.
You look familiar.
Hopefully, that's a good thing.
Who are you here to see?
An old friend.
She died a long time ago.
You remind me of her.
Shut up.
(Argyle laughing)
Here.
Thanks.
My pleasure.
Mind if I watch?
Well, that depends.
Are you interested in my drawing
or are you're interested in something else?
Totally just the drawing.
Not really here for anything else.
I'm also just here to critique.
Well, I suppose I could use
some constructive criticism.
Oh, I'm more than happy
to give you some constructive criticism,
but probably be easier over coffee.
That way, I can let you down easy.
(Lynn chuckling)
Wow.
I didn't realize I sucked
that bad at drawing.
You are the worst.
(gentle apprehensive music)
James.
Cassia.
(gentle apprehensive music)
(tense suspenseful music)
(tense suspenseful music ends)
