Remote (2024) Movie Script

(soft uneasy music)
(soft uneasy music continues)
- Do you see a good spot?
- Yeah, I got one.
[Jesse] I'm gonna take some pictures.
[Nikki] Can you hold that there?
How much time?
- 15.
[Jesse] Is it over my left or my right?
[Nikki] Right. Standby, three, two.
Susan, we're standing
outside of City Square Park
in Junction where a body
was discovered this morning.
Police have roped off the entire park
and are examining the
body, which appears to be
a white male in his early 30s.
Residents here are in shock.
As you can see, they've gathered
at what is normally a quiet and quaint park
for children, friends, and neighbors,
now a crime scene where a man has died.
There was blood surrounding the body,
but no weapon found at the scene,
and police have yet to reveal
an official cause of death,
but it appears as though
the man has been shot.
The sheriff declined to
comment on if the department
will be investigating this as a murder,
but he is scheduled to give a
press conference later today
to address the community's concerns.
Stay with us as this event unfolds.
Live in Junction, Jesse
Phoenix, Channel Two News.
(soft uneasy music) Jesus, what a mess.
Middle of the city square in
a town this small, it's insane.
When they called us out, I
was like, "This happened here?"
[Nikki] You wanna do some MO's?
I don't think any of them
are going back to work today.
No, they're gonna be
talking about this forever.
Pretty sure they're
the ones that found him.
Sweet.
Never seen anything like it.
Nobody knows anything.
Is, is there a killer out there?
Nobody knows.
And just, you wouldn't
think anything like this
would happen in your community.
I don't think anyone's gonna
look at the park the same.
It's just a shame.
Who's gonna be next?
That's what we're all thinking.
(bystanders chattering) (birds twittering)
Hey Jesse, can you set up my mic?
- Hi, Jesse.
- Hello.
- I'm Mira.
- Very nice to meet you.
You're my favorite reporter.
I look for you all the time on the news.
Thank you so much.
Come on.
Are you kidding me?
It's so terrible what happened.
- I know.
- I, I, I walk through there
all the time, you know?
- Really?
- Mm-hmm.
Would you, ah Nikki,
we're gonna do an interview really quickly.
Ah, now's not a good time.
It's just before the conference starts.
Mira is a viewer, and wanted
to share some thoughts with us.
I still have to get plugged in.
- It'll only take a second.
- I said I have to plug in.
We're actually about to get started,
but thank you so much,
I really appreciate it.
- Thank you.
- It's okay.
All right, are we ready?
Well good afternoon, I'd like
to thank you for being here,
and I'd also like to thank
you for voicing your concerns.
I understand that you
have fears and frustrations,
and we'd like to put some of those to rest.
As many of you know, a man was found dead
in City Square Park
this morning at 5:40 AM,
he appears to have been shot.
We have no known suspects at this time,
and I know that that is a
concern for many of you.
It is the department's stance, however,
that the public is not in
any immediate danger.
We believe this to be an isolated incident
that happened to take
place in a public setting.
We found considerable
amounts of illegal substances
on the deceased, and it is our belief
that this was a drug-related
dispute turned lethal.
Even now, we are assembling a task force,
and are confident that we will apprehend
the individual or individuals involved.
I wanna assure each and every
one of you that we are taking
every measured step to ensure your safety,
which includes a curfew, that will be-
- Curfew?
- If we're so safe,
why do we need a curfew?
Folks, please.
A curfew beginning at 10:00 PM,
and ending at 6:00 AM until further notice.
Lastly be safe, look out
for one another, thank you.
(soft uneasy music)
- Do you believe any of that?
- The curfew?
I didn't see any drugs on him, did you?
- No.
- Yeah, me neither.
Any weapons or shells?
How many drug killings have
you seen that end with a body
perfectly positioned in
the middle of a gazebo?
Doesn't it strike you
as a little bit inorganic?
[Nikki] Uh-huh.
And look, I know I'm just some guy,
but even I can tell you
there should be more blood
coming from a headshot like that.
I've seen enough of that
work in the crime beat.
(soft uneasy music)
I mean, it's not even the lack of casings
or any sign of drugs,
it's the blood pattern.
I'll see if we can talk to the sheriff
or someone on the task force tomorrow.
Maybe he's got family
around too, don't you think?
- Sure.
- Awesome, great work today.
Do you need help carrying anything?
- Nope.
- Sweet, thanks again.
(Nikki chuckling and sighing)
How'd it go with Birdman?
You ever babysit a small child?
Oh, the live hits looked all right.
Oh yeah, he can turn
that shit on, all right,
but he can't seem to turn it off.
Well, they put me with
Charlie at the Corn Festival,
got his face painted, made
an ass of himself, it was great.
And we still let him on the air.
Well, it's like I say, they
don't pay us to be great.
They pay us to be good enough.
Wish Golden Boy knew that.
Not every story's gotta shake the earth.
- Hey.
- What's on your mind, Bill?
I've been thinking that this,
it's been in front of me this whole time.
- What's that?
- That it's your turn
to buy donuts tomorrow.
You make three times
what I do, you cheap bastard.
- Right.
- You calling it a night?
Yeah, that circus is gonna
start up early tomorrow, so.
[Tom] Good luck with that.
You better get some sleep while you can.
I suppose so, yeah.
- Oh, Bill.
- Yeah.
Walsh picked up Dimerly's
truck while you were out.
They sent it down to the
impound for inspection.
Yeah. Thanks Tom, goodnight.
[Tom] All right, goodnight Sheriff.
(soft uneasy music)
(handle clattering)
I wanna thank you for your patience
with this investigation.
I know there are a lot of
questions and concerns
over what took place
early yesterday morning.
This department wants
to quell those concerns
and address those questions.
I would ask that you would give my officers
and this task force the time they need
to conduct this investigation.
At this time, I am prepared
to confirm that the body found
was that of 37-year-old
Junction resident Cody Dimerly.
Mr. Dimerly's body has been taken
to the Green County
Medical Examiner's office
for a full autopsy.
However, based off the initial examination,
I can confirm that Mr. Dimerly suffered
from a single gunshot wound.
I cannot confirm that that
was the cause of his death.
(soft uneasy music)
(car warning beeping) (wind whooshing)
(knuckles knocking) You wanna see us?
Yes, come on in. Have a seat.
You're both smart enough
to know this is probably
going to be our biggest story of the year.
- Mm-hmm.
- Our current plan
is to have you down
there every day this week,
maybe next week too.
We wanna know who this
guy was, who he ran with,
how long had he been doing drugs?
Is this a bigger issue in Junction?
We've got a lot of eyes on us,
a lot of people are looking to us answers.
I want you to double check your facts,
and attribute anything
you get from the street.
I noticed some discrepancies
between the crime scene
and what's being reported.
- Like what?
- For starters,
it just seemed too neat.
I don't know about that.
We need to keep the
sheriff's department honest,
but we can't be second-guessing
their work from day one.
It just seemed off.
Jesse, we don't have much pull out there.
We don't need to piss
off one of our only sources.
Ask him questions, but if he tells you
to back off, back off.
We gonna get a hotel, if
we're down there for a week?
It's two hours there and back.
- Yeah.
- No.
Be safe out there, keep
your heads above you.
(clearing throat) Thank you.
(radio signal crackling)
How do people live out here
with no reception or internet?
Good thing we got the mast.
(soft uneasy music)
(exhaling) Welcome back,
thank you so much for joining us.
We've got our boots on
the ground in Junction,
getting more interviews
from local residents.
We're actually about to
speak with the county sheriff
after his press conference earlier today
to discuss the next
moves in the investigation.
So stay with us as I move
forward with my sidekick Nikki,
very best photographer for the job.
Stay with us as this event unfolds.
Live in Junction, Jesse
Phoenix, Channel Two News.
Hey, don't do that.
It's just for social, I have
to update it everywhere.
Don't use me, I'm not a prop.
You think he ditched us?
Hi, sorry I'm late.
[Jesse] No worries, thank you very much.
Ah, I got like a hundred
things going on in here.
[Jesse] Well, we
appreciate you taking the time.
Yeah, right.
Can I please have you state
and spell your name for the camera?
Sure, it's William
Parquet, P-A-R-Q-U-E-T.
All right.
Now after yesterday, the
community was unsettled,
frankly scared.
But this morning you mentioned
that Cody Dimerly's death
was more than likely an isolated incident.
What led you to that conclusion?
Well, as I said, Dimerly
had methamphetamine
and fentanyl on his
body, and it's highly likely
this was a drug deal gone sideways.
It's possible that it was something
more of a personal matter,
but usually, usually drugs are a factor.
Tensions run high, things get heated,
and then it heads south.
Do you see many
drug-related deaths in your city?
No, but while we're
yet a small community,
we're not immune.
I mean, it's here.
Cody's body was found in a popular park
- right in the middle of town.
- Yes.
Why there?
I, I can't tell you the whys, Jesse.
No absolutely, I'm just, I'm asking
if there was a, a reason that he was there.
Simply stated, just where they met.
We found Dimerly's truck parked
at Ferguson's Bar just down the road.
And I apologize, I've
got time for one more,
and I've gotta beat feet.
Right, now would you say your department
is more focused on finding
the killer or the cause of death?
I would say this, that we
are pooling all of our resources
to make all the facets of this case
and the safety of this
community our top priority.
Are we good? (Soft uneasy music)
We're good.
Thanks for stopping by.
Yes, thank you for making
the time. We appreciate it.
Have a good day. (Door clattering)
All I know about Cody was
from our time in high school.
[Jesse] What do you remember
about him in high school?
Not a whole lot, just
usually skipped class,
sell weed to people.
Yeah drugs, stealing,
joy-riding, kid was a punk.
You really can't be
surprised at what happened.
[Jesse] What makes you say this?
(scoffing) Yeah, I
don't mean to sound cold,
but how old was he, 30s, meth?
Yeah, I mean, 30's a pretty good run,
if you're in that game.
(sighing) I don't know
how I'm gonna edit this.
You see that keyboard?
Hit the keys on it.
Every single interview is
just people shitting on him.
Not a single nice thing
was said about this guy.
Sounds like he kinda did that to himself.
Yeah, but how do I form a story on it?
You know, even when people
dig deep on a serial killer,
there's at least someone,
a neighbor who thought they seemed nice.
There's no one, everyone
hates this guy and he's the victim.
You could be a
pioneer, the first journalist
not to give two shits about the deceased.
[Jesse] He's got no family.
What about that bar where
the sheriff found his truck?
Excuse me, I was hoping you
could help me with something.
- I could try.
- I'm looking for the owner.
- You're talking to her.
- You're Ferguson.
You really think there's
a Ferguson in Ferguson's?
Fair enough, I was hoping you could
tell me something about Cody Dimerly.
[Bar Owner] Yeah, and what's it to you?
I'm, I'm from Channel Two.
My name's Jesse Phoenix.
I'm doing a follow-up story on him.
Oh, I thought you looked familiar.
Did Cody come in here a lot?
Look, I will tell you what
I already told the police.
He came in on the
weekends and kept to himself.
That's about it.
- Did he have any friends?
- None that he drank with.
According to the police,
he had a history of selling drugs.
Okay.
Did you ever see anything like that?
Can't say I did.
Okay, did anything crazy,
or out of the ordinary happen that night?
- With Cody?
- With anybody?
Oh, it was Sid's birthday.
Who's Sid?
[Bar Owner] It was a
good night, wasn't it Sid?
They got me a cake.
You should have seen it.
We had the outside trimmed in Oreos,
and we put extra Oreos on it.
You got the picture up there.
That's right, I took a photo.
See, the key is to use marshmallow fluff
instead of whipped cream,
it keeps it intact better.
- You made that?
- Who else was gonna make it?
(soft classic rock music)
- That's Cody.
- Yeah, that's him.
Who's he talking to?
They look pretty chummy.
I think that looks like,
yeah, I think that's Oren.
[Jesse] Are they friends?
(laughing) Oh,
nobody's friends with Oren.
Gets mad when he drinks.
- Why is that?
- Some people just do.
Any idea where I could find him?
I think he's still with the Winstons.
They're an older couple,
live on the far side of Junction.
He's their farmhand.
Any chance I could get a copy of this?
- You gonna order something?
- I'm working.
I'll take a Rusty Nail.
(Jesse chuckling and sighing)
(soft uneasy music)
[Nikki] This is one of his friends?
Yeah, or at least somebody
who knew him, you know,
say more than what a piece of shit he was.
[Nikki] We're gonna have to get diesel.
- Right now?
- No, we'll make it.
- But soon.
- Okay.
(soft uneasy music)
[Nikki] You sure we're
going the right way?
Yeah, it's what she said.
Get back on the main road,
take the third gravel road on the right,
and a left past the circle of life tree.
Maybe we turned down
the wrong gravel road.
No, that was definitely the
circle of life tree we passed.
Wait, is that it? (Soft uneasy music)
[Jesse] Hey, (snapping)
I think that's him. Perfect.
Hi there, I'm Jesse
Phoenix from Channel Two.
- How are you doing?
- No thanks.
We're doing a story on the man
that was found dead in City Square Park.
Have you heard about that?
His name was Cody Dimerly.
We were told he might be friends with you.
Yeah, I said I'm not
interested, so that's that.
Were you at Ferguson's the other night?
- What?
- It was the last place
that Cody was seen before he died.
Look, shit happens in town,
it's got nothing to do with me, all right?
It's a whole nother world.
That's why I'm out here.
- Are you recording?
- Nope, not even on.
[Jesse] We just wanna find
out some more about Cody,
who he was, what he was like.
Well, I didn't know him.
We sure as hell weren't fucking friends.
This photo was taken at the bar.
Looks like you're
talking to him in the back.
The Royals were on.
I think I asked him what the score was.
Now I gotta get back to work,
and you need to get
your shit someplace else.
This was taken the
night that he was murdered.
Do you remember where you
went that night, after the bar?
I'm about five seconds from smashing
that camera through your windshield.
- Like hell you will.
- What was that?
You wanna pay for it?
(Oren spitting) (soft uneasy music)
- The fuck was that?
- What?
You said he knew him.
- I thought he did.
- Bullshit.
You gotta take that photo to the cops, man.
He could be a suspect,
or a person of interest.
No one said that we're not.
- Well, fuck you.
- Nikki-
Why you gotta do that,
drag me into this shit,
- so you could play detective?
- Relax.
Hey there, is that Jesse
Phoenix in my driveway.
Yes sir, how are you?
Fine, thank you. I'm Gerald Winston.
I own the farm here, with my wife Peggy.
I see you met our farmhand, Oren.
He's a little rough around the edges.
So, what brings you to our neck?
We are doing a story
on the Cody Dimerly case.
Have you heard about that?
Oh yeah. I heard the coverage.
- That's pretty shocking.
- Yeah.
Forgive me, but would say
that Oren's always running hot?
Well I don't know, he, he
don't like to be pushed, is all.
Can't complain, man works like a pack mule.
But can be a bit of a bull
sometimes, too. (Chuckling)
While we have you
here, would you be willing
to answer a few questions for the story?
That's be fine, but let's go inside.
It'll be cooler, and Peg can
make us some lemonade.
Excellent, thank you very much.
(water splashing)
(door creaking)
Peggy, you ready for your closeup?
(soft uneasy music) (birds twittering)
- Yeah.
- You'd better get out here.
All right, I'm on my way. Son of a bitch.
He's talking with Cody.
I see what you're saying.
He probably ran into him somewhere.
It's really the only bar here.
That was taken the
night that Cody was killed.
- Oh my.
- I'll be damned.
It's unfortunate timing,
wouldn't you agree?
Oh no. That night,
do you mind if I say it?
No, that's fine.
That night, I remember
I called Oren at Ferg's,
because Gerald had fallen
getting out of the shower,
and I couldn't get him up myself.
So I called Oren to come
out and help me move him.
Are you sure it was that night?
- Yeah, it was about 9:00?
- 9:30, that's late for us.
(Gerald and Peggy laughing)
(sighing) Oh, yeah.
Well I'll be honest, I don't
have much else to ask you,
unless you had a comment
on the story, or Cody Dimerly.
It's terrible.
Yeah, yeah a lotta people
are upset with the scene,
the way the body was found.
The drugs, that's the real problem.
Drugs. (Soft uneasy music)
- Our son was an addict.
- Andrew.
He, did he pass?
I'm so sorry.
We did our best. He
just lost his way, you know?
And with this, this recent death,
the drugs involved, has that impacted you?
It's upsetting, people
don't wanna see it,
or think that it's here in
this town, but it's here.
That makes me mad.
When Andrew, people
mourned, they sent flowers,
but pretty soon they
just went back to normal.
No investigation, no help-
[Gerald And Peggy] Nothing changes.
What do you hope to see
happen in the wake of this?
Oren must be back.
(fist pounding)
- Or not.
Really we'd like to see
community, capital C community,
where we, we face problems head on,
instead of shoving them in a corner.
We take care of each other.
Gerald, now didn't I see you earlier today?
Yes, sir.
Wanna tell me your
purpose for being here?
Oh, we're just conducting
an interview, Sheriff.
Hmm, they invite you?
'Cause I got a call from Oren Heath,
saying a couple reporters
are harassing him.
Oh no, we, we were
asking Oren some questions
and we had a misunderstanding.
But Mr. And Mrs. Winston
volunteered to speak with us.
Is that right?
Oren needed to cool off a little.
We wanted... We're taking care of it.
We wanted to tell him about Andrew.
Oh yeah, well.
Well, that's just a crying shame there.
You do right by the
Winstons now, you hear me?
Yes, sir.
Gerald, can I get a word?
Of course. (Door creaking)
Sorry about that.
Oh no, that's what I was gonna say.
No it's, it's fine. He just
has a lot going on right now.
Why are you talking to him?
He's actually looking
into the drug problem,
unlike everyone else.
And what do you supposed happens
when he puts two and two together?
What the hell are you talking about?
It's falling apart, Gerald.
I wanted to thank you
again for speaking with us,
even after the tiff with Oren.
I, I didn't mean to suggest
or accuse anything.
We were just following a lead.
I know. You know, Oren's a good man.
He just doesn't handle
stress as well as others.
- When did he get in a fight?
- Sorry?
He had a shiner and
some scratches on his face
when we pulled up.
No, I have no idea.
I mean, I don't know-
You didn't see them when he came to work?
(soft uneasy music) -
You know, I didn't ask.
- You said you'd handle it.
- I'm not in charge.
There's a task force involved
now, and an FBI contact,
because it looks like
a goddam ritual killing.
It's in their face, where
they walk their dog.
They can't ignore it now.
It's a fucking mess.
If you guys had left him in his truck
with a needle in his arm, like I told you,
we wouldn't be here.
I'm just curious, why
did Oren call the sheriff?
Why not just call the department?
We've been a friend of Bill's for years.
He's a staple in the community
And he just came out in
the middle of an investigation?
Now that's a question
you really need to ask him, isn't it?
We can get ahead
of this, we can fix this.
- You need to come clean.
- What?
Look, it's beyond me now.
They're gonna find
something, and when they do,
they're gonna take your whole family down.
I can't protect you.
You came to me, you wanted this.
But you fucked up,
and now they're coming,
and they're gonna take
you, Oren, and Peggy,
and every blade of grass on this farm.
[Gerald] No, no, you said-
Or, you'd be a man and own this shit.
Look, I'll back your side,
and I'll pull as much
favor with the DA as I can,
which, who knows, it's not
like you killed the fucking pope,
but you need to own
this, or Peggy goes too.
Why don't I just name you,
take you down for good measure?
Your word versus the sheriff.
Come on Gerald, look,
I'm saying this with love.
It's over, come clean. (Soft uneasy music)
Now?
Yes.
Okay.
(Bill groaning) (tense uneasy music)
Fucker.
- What the fuck?
- Oh, God.
(tense uneasy music continues)
Call 911, now.
I have no signal.
- Me either.
- Nothing.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Mr. Winston, mister.
(Gerald grunting) (phone beeping)
(tense uneasy music continues)
Peggy, they got the landline.
Hello? (Shoulder thudding)
Mr. Winston, Mr. Winston, please.
Can we please just talk a minute?
(shoulder thudding) (Gerald grunting)
- Can you hold him?
- What?
(dresser squeaking)
(tense uneasy music continues)
Come help me with this, come on.
Fuck that.
- Nikki.
- All right.
[Jesse] Go where? We're
in the middle of nowhere.
(Gerald grunting) (tense uneasy music)
[Gerald] Peggy.
(door clattering)
(soft uneasy music) (Nikki gasping)
- What happened?
- No time, stop her.
(soft uneasy music continues)
- Peg, the gun.
- No.
Peggy.
We can't just shoot them.
We can at least scare them.
We have to stop them. (Tense uneasy music)
(Gerald gasping)
(equipment rattling)
(door creaking)
(tense uneasy music continues)
Hey. Drop it, asshole.
[Peggy] Oh, goddammit.
Peggy, what is this?
What's happening right now?
Back off. (Tense uneasy music continues)
Back off.
Just let us go, okay?
Just, we won't say
anything, just let us go.
Nobody's going anywhere.
(pipe thudding) (Oren grunting)
No, Oren don't. (Panting)
You're good to go.
Hey, big weekend, huh?
You're looking at it.
(door beeping)
Hey, y'all got rolling papers?
- No.
- All right,
how about some Swishes then?
Don't have any of those either.
All right cool man,
thanks. What the fuck?
(door beeping) (soft uneasy music)
So he just comes back into
town, like nothing happened?
Probably doesn't even remember.
Degenerate.
It's not like he killed
him outright, guys.
He might as well of.
What'd he get, a year, two?
Possession, that's all we had.
[Peggy] He's killed enough.
How many is it gonna take, huh?
It's not just Cody.
And what are you doing about it?
Look, we pick him
up now, he's out in four
and back at it, that help?
Take him out.
Nobody's gonna miss
him, that's all I'm saying.
Ah, Jesus. (Sighing)
It's not gonna bring Andrew back.
He didn't even have a chance.
I want what's right. (Soft uneasy music)
All right, it's all set.
Just plunge, it should be more than enough.
And when it's done,
plant this in his pocket.
Just, no prints.
It happens every day, right?
Yeah, one less shithead.
You call me when it's done.
(soft classic rock music)
(pool balls clacking)
(patrons chattering)
How you doing?
Royals up?
Hey, you just got outta Fort Dodge, right?
- Yeah, yeah.
- Never been.
Did a couple rounds through Newton, though.
Oh yeah that's, that's for pussies.
(Oren laughing)
- Oren.
- Cody, ah.
What are you drinking?
Ah, it's whatever you're buying.
(tense uneasy music) (patrons chattering)
(Cody laughing)
You still pumping?
I do what I have to.
Ice?
You know, I've got a little setup.
Some pretty primo shit.
- Just you?
- Bigger cut that way.
But you know, I'm curious
to see what you'd think.
Maybe you know something I don't.
Here you go Sid, for our favorite drunk.
Oh, you didn't have to do it.
Get in, everybody.
You wanna cook with me.
Sure, why the hell not?
Yeah, why the hell not?
Just come check it out.
(soft uneasy music) (gravel crunching)
(whistling) Damn, you all
got your own country out here.
Yeah, it's nice. (Soft uneasy music)
Hey, you ain't gonna
tweak out on me, are you?
No, I just caught a, caught a chill.
All right, well come on. Night's burning.
(soft uneasy music continues)
Put on some lights, man.
(soft uneasy music continues)
(punches thudding) (Gerald groaning)
[Cody] What the fuck?
What the fuck? (Gasping)
Look at me, do you remember him?
- What the fuck is this?
- This is my son, Andrew.
- You killed him.
- Kill?
I didn't kill anybody.
He was only 19 years old,
he had his whole life in front of him,
and you sold him your poison.
I sell to anybody,
anybody that wants some.
He died in a garage.
He was weighing to bones.
I guess he should've quit then, hmm?
You, shit. (Men grunting)
(tense uneasy music)
(gunshot blasting) (tense
uneasy music continues)
(plastic crunching)
I'm glad you did it.
That's what we came to do.
We can use this, we can
make it mean something.
(soft uneasy music) (water spraying)
(Gerald grunting) (shovel thudding)
(chair clattering)
(Gerald grunting and panting)
(soft uneasy music continues)
(birds twittering)
Now goddam, Gerald.
I am so sorry.
Truly, deeply, I am.
Hey, we're gonna turn the tide.
Andy will be remembered.
(soft uneasy music continues)
(shovel softly thudding)
(chair scraping)
I can tell you you're just
thrown in the middle of this,
but you can stop it.
How many more people
have to die? Let me help you.
You think I'm the victim here?
Captive in my own home?
Let me tell you something,
kid. I pulled the trigger.
I don't need to know about that.
Let me ask you something.
Would you have made the trip
if you knew it was an overdose?
Probably not.
I know you wouldn't have.
Nobody came when my son Andrew died.
The papers didn't even print it.
The obituary said,
"Died of a sudden illness."
True enough.
You don't want truth, you want neat.
What about this is neat,
Peggy? You killed two people.
- They killed my boy.
- Where were you?
When your son was tweaking
on meth Peggy, where were you?
I was right here.
My boy would've been just
fine, if he'd stayed right here.
(soft uneasy music)
We good here?
Yeah.
We better get on before dark.
We'll be up at the Anderson's old place.
- Make it quick.
- Okay.
You said no guns.
- Do you want it for backup?
- I got this.
- Put it in the truck.
(birds twittering)
(soft uneasy music)
Starting to think you're underpaid, Oren.
Two bodies in one day on
top of field work? (Whistling)
Please tell me you're
getting benefits and a 401k.
No? Paid time off?
Really played you for a fool, haven't they?
You do the work, they get the money.
Seems like the Winstons got
the better of that negotiation.
You know you're not their son, right?
(punch thudding) You don't have to do-
Shut the fuck up.
(gasping) Do you think
they would kill for you?
I said, shut up.
(gasping) Don't hit me
a third time. (Coughing)
(mimics coughing)
What? I didn't catch that?
Well you talk a good game, nice guy,
but what does it get you, huh?
You talk and you talk and you bullshit,
(Jesse gasping)
What does it matter, you don't care.
You don't care about
Gerald, Peggy, or even Cody.
All it matters is what it can get for you.
They're gonna find you and your truck
at the bottom of a ditch.
You know who they're
gonna send to cover it?
Two more assholes,
just looking to get ahead.
(Oren gasping) (Nikki grunting)
(bottle shattering) (Oren gasping)
(Nikki groaning) (Oren gasping)
(soft uneasy music)
(Nikki gasping)
(Jesse gasping)
(soft uneasy music)
(Gerald panting)
(Nikki gasping)
Anything? Fuck.
No, I don't have the truck key.
(soft uneasy music)
Where's my camera?
I'm sorry, Nikki.
Nikki, I'm sorry.
You didn't know. (Birds twittering)
(gasping) Check, one, one, one.
I don't know who's there,
Carla, Rich, somebody.
This is Nikki Young,
photojournalist for Channel Two,
here with my partner,
reporter Jesse Phoenix.
We are trapped at 630 County
Road 48, in Junction, Iowa,
the home of Peggy and Gerald Winston.
If you see this, please send
emergency crews right away.
We are injured, and need medical attention.
Repeat, we are trapped,
and in need of severe medical attention.
On the chance that we don't
make it, here's what we know.
Cody Dimerly was murdered
by Peggy and Gerald Winston,
and their farmhand Oren Heath.
Gerald also murdered Sheriff Parquet,
and he and Oren buried the
body somewhere on the property.
Oren tried to kill Jesse and me.
He caused our injuries, and
I killed him in self-defense.
His body's in the Winstons' garage.
Again, please send police
and an ambulance immediately.
We have no way out of here, please.
Let's turn this bitch on.
Okay this, this panel up here,
that, that far right switch,
I need you to hold that. (Gasping)
Okay, good. Yeah, yeah.
All right, now come down here,
to these three panels down here, all right?
The one on the left, that dial,
switch it from off to gen, good.
Well, I know this isn't how
you wanted to spend your Tuesday.
Bill would've broke.
His heart wasn't in it.
In what? What are we in?
We're making things
right, everything with Andrew.
We're so close, Peg.
It's a little late to cast aspersions.
No, I'm with you, Bug.
I will help you plant and harvest.
I will wash your laundry.
I'll eat those tenderloins with you.
But just remember from
this point on, we've killed.
You and me, regardless
of the reasons. It's done.
Good, now over here,
this, this left panel, far left,
the one of the top says
DC made, switch that.
Good, yes okay, all right.
Now go up here to the SAP panel, up there.
Yeah, right up there, okay.
What happened, what did you do?
The generator's off. I fucking told you.
We need more diesel.
A gas can?
No, we didn't. Check the
garage, check the garage.
Diesel, make sure the
can says diesel. (Gasping)
(soft uneasy music) (objects clattering)
(Nikki panting) (gravel crunching)
(Nikki gasping)
- I don't think he's back yet.
- You think he left?
I'm sure he did.
(birds twittering) (soft uneasy music)
(Nikki panting and groaning)
- Fuck me.
- Where's the plug?
Fill it up.
(water splashing)
- Peg.
- What?
- Oren's dead.
- What?
They killed Oren, and I don't know
- where the hell they are.
- Oren's dead?
They're gone, they're just gone?
What are you doing?
They can't have gotten far.
One of them's bleeding, a lot.
They're coming out.
Did you fill it?
Can you get this on?
(Nikki gasping)
(tense uneasy music)
Are you gonna check out the truck?
Do you think you can run him down?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- Be careful in there.
- Okay.
(soft uneasy music)
(Nikki grunting) (tripod thudding)
(soft uneasy music continues)
(Nikki gasping and grunting)
(Nikki crying) (tense uneasy music)
(rock thudding)
(gunshot blasting) (Peggy grunting)
(Jesse and Peggy grunting)
(gunshot blasting) (tense uneasy music)
(Nikki gasping and groaning)
(tense uneasy music continues)
(Jesse gasping)
(Nikki gasping)
You're too late.
Are you sure anybody's listening?
Of course, that was the whole idea.
(tense uneasy music)
Where's Peggy? (Soft uneasy music)
She put up a fight, huh?
(tense uneasy music) Come on, do it.
(gunshot blasting)
(soft uneasy music)
(Jesse gasping) (Nikki groaning)
(soft uneasy music continues)
(uneasy pensive music)
(tense uneasy music)
(soft uneasy music)
