Sarangi (2025) Movie Script

A bottle of water and tea, please.
Your tea is ready.
Sure.
How much?
- 30 Rupees.
30 Rupees.
- Hello, where are you?
- Near Horatti.
Your hospital visit?
- We are getting ready.
- What time is your appointment?
We need to go now.
Little one?
Mom is getting her ready.
Okay, call me after you
get back from the hospital.
Can you receive a call there?
Try, or else I'll call you in the evening.
When are you coming here?
Baby crying.
Why is she crying?
Mom...
Mom...
Why don't you go check
on her? We can talk later.
All right, be safe.
Yeah.
Hello.
Sorry, I can't hear you.
Hello.
Hello, madam, let me
call you back in a bit.
Hello?
Piece of crap.
Hello...
Is anybody here?
Hello...
Oh! You are awake.
Please, sit down, sit down.
You're burning hot!
Your fever seems to have worsened.
Give me a second.
Here...
Drink this, and you'll feel better.
This is just a herbal remedy.
How did I get here?
You don't seem to remember.
You were sleeping
outside, so I brought you in.
Sorry, I was feeling quite dizzy.
That's okay.
Please drink.
Is it bitter?
It's alright.
Finish it.
You'll feel better soon.
So, what brought you here?
I was on my way to visit a friend.
Oh!
You forgot your way!
No.
My scooter broke down on the way.
Then, I went into the
forest looking for water
and lost my way.
That's alright...
Everything happens for a reason!
You live here?
I do.
Alone?
Why
is it wrong to be alone?
No, I didn't mean that.
Are you suspicious because
I live alone in the forest?
Don't worry.
You are safe here.
Can I stay here tonight?
If I say no would you leave?
I've no idea where to
venture out at this hour.
I'll leave early in the morning.
As you wish.
It's up to you whether
you stay or leave this place.
How are you feeling now?
I feel much better.
What was in this?
Would you like some more?
Yes please.
There's hot water. Would
you like to freshen up?
Okay.
The bathroom is outside.
Here.
There is a towel you can use.
Here you go.
You must be really hungry, let me...
No, please don't trouble yourself.
Why?
I don't feel hungry
anymore after drinking this.
Really?
I would have asked you if I was hungry.
Okay, as you wish.
What are you drawing?
Katte Mane.
Do you know this game?
Of course, who doesn't?
Why are you playing alone?
Well, there is nobody around
would you like to play a game?
Play with just two pawns?
I wanted to finish faster.
Now that you joined, here you go.
You can go first.
Does the winner get anything?
You have to win first; Then we shall see.
I've never lost playing this game.
Oh!
If you win, you'll get whatever you desire.
Anything I desire?
Mm-hmm.
But, what if I win?
I've nothing to give you.
You don't have to give me anything.
Just do me a favor, that's enough.
Sure, by all means.
If you don't mind can I ask you something?
Sure.
How come you are alone in this forest?
It's a long story.
What is it?
Do you know why this
place is called Mount Sarangi?
Long ago, a Sage used
to live in this forest.
He had a daughter and
her name was "Sarangi".
Having lost her Mother at a very young
age, she grew up in her father's care.
As she matured, she devoted herself to
God and spent time helping her father.
Once, a Prince wandered
into the Ashram while hunting,
and struck up an acquaintance with Sarangi.
Over time, their friendship
blossoms into love and
they began meeting in secret,
without the Sage's knowledge.
From their love, Sarangi shares
the news of her pregnancy.
The Prince, who used
to visit Sarangi everyday,
stops visiting upon
learning of her pregnancy.
Sarangi waits in vain
for the Prince to return,
but he never does.
Out of fear for her father's reaction,
Sarangi decides to find the prince
and persuade him to marry her.
She braves rugged forests, hills,
and fierce winds to reach the palace.
Unfortunately for the poor girl,
the Prince accuses her of
adultery and publicly disavows her.
Heartbroken, Sarangi
returns home to her father,
confesses the truth, seeks forgiveness,
and tragically ends her life.
So, the sage didn't punish the Prince?
How could any father tolerate
injustice meted out to his children?
The furious Sage confronts the
King and Queen, demanding justice.
But the Prince denies
ever having any relationship
and accuses the Sage of lying.
As the King and Queen
contemplate who to believe,
the enraged Sage curses the Prince
to suffer eternally where Sarangi died.
The King and Queen immediately
plead for the Sage's forgiveness.
Finally, the Sage, having calmed down,
takes pity and gives the Prince
a sacred stone and tells him.
"Pray to this every day,
when the pure touch the stone, you'll
attain salvation and the curse ends.
"Otherwise..."
I got it.
What do you think happened?
Finally, an honest person comes
along and liberates the Prince.
That's it right?
How do you know?
That's how all stories are.
But this is not a fiction.
It's a true story!
You may choose to believe it or not.
Okay, but how is that
story relevant to you?
You would think I'm crazy if I told you.
Not at all, tell me.
Oh no, you're down to just one pawn!
I told you, I have never
lost playing this game.
I got distracted talking to you.
I'll win the next game for sure.
One more game?
Why?
Are you scared you'll lose?
I am not scared,
but aren't you sleepy?
It's okay.
It seems like you need some sleep.
All right.
Tell me what you want?
What?
You won the game!
You're joking, right?
No, I am serious.
Are you some kind of
god to grant my wishes?
Has god granted all your wishes?
How can that be possible?
Even if God doesn't fulfill your
wishes, you still ask Him, right?
True, but...
Then?
Why don't you test if you don't believe?
Show me your hand.
Hold this for praying.
Now make a wish.
Did you make a wish?
Hmm.
You can put your hand down now.
Well, nothing happened.
Is that ring yours?
How did this end up here?!
Is that all you wished for?
Huh.
You are so naive.
Just a min.
I'm sorry for being a spoilsport,
let's play just one more game.
It's okay. You need some rest too.
After drinking what you gave me,
I no longer feel hungry or sleepy.
Looks like the herbal
extract worked wonders!
We could have finished half the
game by now. Please sit down.
Okay, as you wish!
You can go first this time.
By the way, you didn't tell me your name.
I am Satya Narayana but I go by Satya.
I hope you're Honesty
goes beyond your name.
Of course, I lead an Honest life.
What do you do for a living?
I am a jeweler. I have a shop in town.
Oh!
You must be quite wealthy then!
That's what everybody thinks.
How about your family?
I am married and have a daughter.
How old is your daughter?
Six months old.
A six month old baby!
We couldn't have children for a long time.
So, how's life after your child's birth?
Well, expenses have gone up
and my mother's criticism
of my wife has gone down.
Does your mother live with you?
Looks like you may win this game too!
I told you, I was going to win this game.
It's your turn. Tell me what you want?
Hmm...
Never mind.
Why?
Didn't you say you needed a favor?
Yes...
But...
But what?
I doubt you're up for it.
Let me hear it and I'll
tell if can do it or not.
One must be of pure heart
to do what I'm going to ask.
I'm not an immoral person.
And one must have
great deal of courage too.
Do I look like a coward?
You may not be a coward,
but you don't seem like someone
who'd risk their life for others.
What?
Don't get me wrong
- I am just...
- Hold on.
You shouldn't judge someone
without knowing them.
What do you know about me?
I am willing to sacrifice
my life to help others!
Really?
Let's see.
Place your hand on this.
Why?
We'll know if you're honest or not.
How would that help you?
You'll know.
Are you scared?
What's there to be afraid of!
Remember
once you touch it, there is no going back!
Meaning?
If you turn out to be dishonest,
you'll never leave this forest!
What?
You said you'd be willing to
sacrifice your life to help others!
So, you're testing me! Fine, I'm
ready to face whatever comes my way.
Is anybody home?
Who are you?
I've lost my way in the
forest. Can you please help me?
What do you need?
Can you give me
directions to a town nearby?
Sure, but it's quite far.
If you've got a torch,
could I borrow it, please?
I have a lantern if you need it.
Yes please.
Give me a minute.
If you backtrack and go straight,
you'll come across a small stream.
Cross the stream, turn left, and
follow the edge to an intersection.
If you bear left again,
you'll find a small dirt road.
Keep going, and you'll
come across a village.
Here.
I am not sure how I would give this back.
Don't worry, you can take
it. It's not that valuable.
Okay.
Why go at this hour?
If you like, you can stay here tonight.
If you must go, please be careful;
This forest is full of wild animals.
I will try, otherwise I will come back.
As you wish.
Who is it?
It's me, Satya. I was here a some time ago.
You were right; You can't
go anywhere in this darkness.
Please come in.
Hope I'm not causing you any inconvenience.
I wouldn't have asked if it were an issue.
Can I get some water to drink?
Sure, take a seat.
Let me take that.
Watch you head.
Here you go.
Didn't you ask for water!
Would you like some more?
No, thanks.
There is hot water,
If you'd like to freshen up.
Sure.
The bathroom is outside.
Here.
There is a towel you can use.
You must be really hungry.
You shouldn't have
bothered. I would have slept.
Would you let your guests sleep hungry?
Please, sit down.
Rinse off your plate.
Your name?
Satya.
How is the food?
It's delicious.
Everything tastes good when you're hungry.
If you don't mind, can I ask you something?
Sure.
How come you are here?
It's a long story.
What is it?
Do you know why this
place is called Mount Sarangi?
Long ago, a Sage used
to live in this forest...
Okay,
but how is that story relevant to you?
You would think I'm
crazy if I told you that.
Not at all, tell me.
By the way, how did
you get lost in this forest?
I went looking for water in the forest.
And lost my way back.
So, you're not from around here.
What brought you here then?
I was on my way to visit a friend.
What do you do?
I am a jeweler.
Ohh...
You must be a wealthy man!
I wouldn't say that.
Rich people always say they're poor.
Do you live here alone?
Alone?
I am with plants, trees, animals,
birds, and so many other things!
So, you're living a lonely life.
Even if you live in
town, aren't you lonely?
How is that?
Deep down inside, you
are always alone, aren't you?
Oh
you mean that way.
If you ask me,
it's better to live alone in a
forest than amongst people.
What do you do when you need help?
Someone like you shows up!
How about your parents?
They are no more!
At least now, you could go somewhere else.
Where will I go?
If I come, would you take me along?
Don't worry, I am just kidding.
It's a big world. You could
go live anywhere you want to.
Where your heart is, there your world is.
Yeah, that's true.
I am good.
There is very little
left. Please finish it.
I feel so sorry for you.
Why?
Someone as beautiful as
you living alone in this forest,
instead of enjoying the
happiness of married life.
You are such a liar.
I'm lying?
Then what?
You say I am beautiful,
and that one could be happily married too.
Well, you're beautiful and that's true.
But you can't be happily married, right!
That depends on one's luck.
Then, I guess you aren't lucky yet!
Meaning?
You are not married, right?
What makes you think that?
You don't look like one!
Phew!
Now, I can ask a favor
without embarrassing myself.
What is it?
To be honest
it's really not a favor.
Then?
I worry about what you may think of me.
I won't judge; Tell me.
No matter how happy we are alone
there's always a longing to
spend time with others, right?
So innocent! I need to explain everything!
Am I
really
beautiful?
Only if you like.
Are you okay? Have some water.
Looks like you don't like me.
How can that be possible?
Then?
Actually, I'm married
and I have a child too.
But you said you liked me.
Yes, I do like you.
Isn't it wrong for a married
man to desire another woman?
Society views it as wrong.
How do you see it?
Tonight
whatever happens here
no one will ever know!
What do you say?
Whatever you say.
Such an honest man!
Here.
If you try to be honest all the
time, this is how you end up... a loser!
Can I get some more water?
Sure.
Keep this with you.
What are you doing?
Believe it or not.
The moment I saw you, I lost my mind.
Wouldn't it be cheating on your wife?
Like you said, nobody is going to find out!
Even if no one finds out,
a sin is still a sin, isn't it?
If you knew it was wrong,
why did you ask me then?
To test you!
What?
Please go, get some sleep.
Just a sec...
Who the hell are you to test me?
I am sorry...
I shouldn't have said that.
Please forgive me.
It was you who asked me first.
So?
You were all over me, what's wrong now?
All right, now I am no longer
interested. Can you go to sleep?
Why?
What is it I lack?
Decency!
But you don't like decent men, do you?
Are you crazy or what?
It was you who messed with my head.
Now, enough of this drama!
What the hell is wrong with you?
You kindle the desire,
and now you pretend.
Hello.
Is anybody home?
Who is it?
Can you please help me?
What do you need?
I have lost my way in the forest.
Can you give me
directions to a town nearby?
Sure, but it's a long walk.
That's okay, I can go.
Who is it?
I'm Satya. I was here some time ago.
How can I help?
Can you please let me stay here tonight?
How can I let a stranger stay?
I understand your fear.
I swear I won't cause any trouble.
Please help me.
If I let you stay, can you
do me a favor in return?
Definitely.
What if you back out later?
Not at all. I'll help you
with whatever you need.
Thank you so much for helping.
It's okay; Please come in.
Can I get some water to drink?
Sure, take a seat.
Let me take that.
Watch your head.
Here you go.
Would you like some more?
No, thanks.
There is hot water if
you'd like to freshen up.
Sorry, but I haven't cooked anything today.
You shouldn't have bothered.
You must be very hungry.
Please, help yourself.
- How about you?
- I am good, please go ahead.
If you don't mind, can I ask you something?
Sure.
How come you are here?
It's a long story.
What is it?
Okay.
But how is that story relevant to you?
You would think I'm
crazy if I told you that.
By the way, how did
you get lost in this forest?
I went into the forest looking
for water and lost my way back.
So, you're not from around here.
That's right.
What do you do for a living?
I am a jeweler.
Oh, really?
Can you tell if an ornament
is gold just by looking at it?
Yes, I can.
Just a minute.
I'm lucky you showed up!
Can you check this?
It's a diamond ring!
How much is it worth?
It's worth a lot!
Are you feeling unwell?
You promised to help me.
Yes, I did.
I don't know how to ask this.
It's okay; Just tell me.
That is...
You must bury my body.
What?!
Tonight, I want you to bury my dead body.
Are you kidding me?
You want me to bury you?
Yes.
Honestly, I don't understand
what you're asking.
I'm going to die very soon.
When the time comes, I
want you to bury my body.
What has happened to you?
I have consumed poisonous mushrooms.
What?
Tell me, where's the salt?
Salt?
Salt water helps expel what you've eaten.
No need for that; Please, sit down.
Why?
I have no desire to live.
Face your problems with
courage; Don't give up on life.
Even to die, you need immense courage.
But what's pushing you to this decision?
I am not dying because I
am afraid to face problems.
I simply have no desires left; That's all.
When there's nothing left to
desire, thoughts of death arise.
Did you know that?
While everyone is
struggling to build a life...
Death is as meaningful as life itself!
I don't know what to say.
If you're so determined
to die, why are you alone?
I have no one.
Don't you have any relatives?
Your parents?
They've passed away.
I noticed you didn't eat much.
I'm fine, thanks.
Please give me the plate.
Oh no, are you okay?
Can you please get me some water?
Huh.
Here.
Can I get you anything else?
Promise me that you'll bury me tonight.
Tonight?
Yes, tonight.
Along with this box.
I'm sorry, but you are putting
me in a difficult situation.
Remember, you said you'd
help me with anything I ask.
For all the trouble I am causing you.
I don't need it. Please keep it.
Please don't refuse;
It'll make me feel bad.
Take it.
Can you at least give me your word now?
All right.
I will do as you say.
I have dug a grave behind the house.
Take me there.
Please get the box.
Can I take the lantern?
Sure.
Take it; It's also very valuable.
You...
Why did you do it?
How did you come back?
Don't you have any self-respect?
I am asking you!
If there is nobody around,
you'll stoop down to any level, won't you?
I needed it, so I took it.
Why didn't you ask me then?
You're too proud to ask but not to steal!
This belongs to me.
Why would someone dying need jewels?
We are all dying!
The ring I gave you?
You aren't worthy of it. Give it back.
Who are you, huh?
Tell me who the hell you are!
Die, you wretched demon.
How did you get lost in the forest?
Thanks, sir. Visit my shop when in town.
Sure. You know your way from here, right.
Yes, I do.
Go on; Your friend
might be looking for you.
Okay, sir.
Good to see you. How are you?
I am okay. How are you?
I am fine.
Where's everyone?
They all went to Bengaluru.
Really?
- When did they leave?
- The day before yesterday.
Day before yesterday?
When I spoke to him, he said he was home.
Hmm, I don't know about that.
- Is there a phone charger?
- Yes, please come.
Hello.
Hey, it's me.
Where the hell were you? How
could you be so irresponsible?
It's a long story.
What story? Couldn't you at least
inform me of your whereabouts!
Just listen to me for...
Listen to what? Have you seen how
many calls and messages you've received?
Well, I called back, didn't I?
What, after four days?
What are we supposed to think?
I don't understand why you are so upset.
Wouldn't we be scared if
you disappeared like this?
You think I did it on purpose.
Calm down and listen to me, please.
The other day...
After I spoke to you, my
bike broke down on the way.
Exhausted from walking, I went
into the forest looking for water.
Near the water, I heard an animal
and fell while trying to run away.
From there, I lost my way.
While trying to find my
way back, it got dark.
The next morning, I resumed
walking and found a shrine.
At the shrine, I found a few figs.
Upon eating the figs, I felt
dizzy and lost consciousness.
When I woke up, it was already afternoon.
After walking a lot more, by God's
grace, I finally found my way back.
There, I met a stranger
who offered me a ride.
So, you were unconscious for three days?!
That's what I don't understand.
All I remember is spending
a night in the forest.
You left home on Tuesday,
and today it's Saturday.
All right, where are you now?
I am at Nanjappa's place.
He said he was out of
town when I called him.
Yes, he's coming back tomorrow.
How's the baby?
She's fine.
When are you coming home?
Can I get the phone, please?
This is the helper's phone.
Let me call you back later.
Okay.
Hold on, let me have a
quick chat with Nanjappa.
Sure.
Hello.
Who is it, my sweetie pie?
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I got greedy and made a
mistake. Please, forgive me.
Forgive someone as heinous as you?!
Punish me as you wish,
but please let me go.
That's not possible.
What's your last wish?
I, I want to see my wife and baby.
Who are you?
Fool! The first thing you need
to ask is, 'Why am I here?'
Do you remember getting lost in the forest?
How do you know that?!
Come forward.
Don't you want to know why you are here?
Hello.
Hello.
Are you still at home?
No, I just came to the shop.
Have you had breakfast?
Not yet.
Don't skip meals.
I won't.
Are you both well?
Yes.
What's the little one up to?
Ask her yourself.
Sweetie, do you want to talk to Daddy?
Say hello, say hello.
What's my baby doing?
My angel! Who's my angel? Who's my angel?
Baby cooing.
So, how is business?
Same story.
Nothing for the past two days.
Let's see how today goes.
It wasn't this bad last year, right?
Yeah.
So, are you coming here on Tuesday?
No, on Wednesday.
I'll stop by at Nanjappa's on the way.
Why not come here first and go?
He said he may travel.
Let me check with him.
Okay, do as you please.
When is the next doctor's check-up?
Tuesday.
Please come. Have a seat.
Let me call you back later.
Call me in the afternoon;
We'll be back from the temple.
All right.
Is the order ready?
Had it last week, but you didn't come.
Sorry, I got busy.
Thank you.
Did I leave my purse here by any chance?
Is this the one?
Yes, I was worried I'd lost it.
- Please, keep it safe.
- Thank you.
What's up, bro? You never answer my calls.
No, man. I've been on the move,
and the network is terrible out here.
That's what you say all the time.
Well, not everyone's as lucky as
you to earn a living while sitting.
Of course, you know how lucky I am.
So, how is your little princess?
She's great.
How many months is it now?
She's six months old.
Six months already!
Nanja, hold on a second.
Hello.
Yeah, tell me.
Hey, did you think about my request?
About the money?
Hmm.
Mmm...
Would three lakhs help?
Can't you arrange five lakhs?
That'll be a stretch.
I also have a few commitments.
Is it?
I'll pay it back soon; Can you please try.
I will, but I can't guarantee it.
Sure, but please try your best.
So, when are you coming here?
Next Wednesday.
On Wednesday, we are
planning to go to Bengaluru.
What time are you leaving?
Not sure yet. Why don't you
come on Tuesday instead?
On Tuesday...?
Come over, stay the night,
and leave in the morning.
Mmm, I could do that as well...
Why think so much? Just come over,
let's enjoy a good meal and get drunk.
All you want is to eat and drink, right?
What else is there to life?
I don't believe you.
You are just messing with my head.
What don't you believe?
You don't need to believe anything!
Do you know why?
Because nothing is going to change now!
I made mistakes.
Please, forgive me.
Seeking my forgiveness is pointless.
Get up.
My wife and child have no one else but me.
Please, I beg you, have
mercy on them, if not for me.
Do you think their lives
won't continue without you?
I swear on my child.
I'll stay honest until my last breath.
And I'll never repeat this mistake.
Please, let me go.
You had a chance to walk away.
But what did you do?
So...
How is it fair to take away my life?
Who am I to take your life?
Then...
Would you let me go?
Remember the story I
told you about this place?
Do you know what became of the
curse placed upon the young prince?
The Sage, moved by pity, gave
the prince a sacred stone and said,
"Pray to this every day."
When someone truly
honest touches the stone,
the curse will be lifted,
and you will find salvation.
"Otherwise, the curse will
pass on, and you will perish."
Saying this, the Sage vanished.
From that fateful day, the curse has
been passed from one person to another!
No, that's not possible.
If you were honest, we both
would have been liberated.
But now...
What happens now?
My curse is yours now!
No...
This is not fair...
This is not fair.
Why are you so desperate?
Why me?
Couldn't you trap anyone else?
Nobody is responsible for your fate.
You blame my fate, even though
you're the one responsible for all this?
Fifty years ago, I too
behaved the same way.
But with time,
I came to understand that this was a
gift, to awaken to life's true meaning.
Then...
Keep the curse to yourself;
Why are you passing it onto me?
You wouldn't be here if that was possible.
Come what may,
I'm not staying here.
Do whatever the hell you want!
We all have to face the
consequences of our actions.
Nobody is stopping you here.
Do as you wish!
