Shattered (2017) Movie Script
1
(solemn instrumental music)
[Kate] I really don't
know where to start.
So many things I could
have done differently.
I would ask myself if I
allowed it to happen.
But I already know the answer.
I look around at all of it now.
Was it worth it?
How many lives destroyed?
How much is enough?
(solemn instrumental music)
Spring was a beautiful
time in Clarksdale.
It was also the time
when the Burnetts,
the town's most
well-to-do family,
would throw their
annual spring party.
The Burnett's practically
ran the town
and they wore their wealth well.
Everyone wanted to be a
part of their circle.
Forest Burnett was heir
to a timber fortune
and ran his company between
Clarksdale and Atlanta.
If you wanna go out
riding baby late at night
Kiss and love and hug
me til the morning light
I'll do it
If you want me to
Ha!
[Rocco] I give up, let's
just say hi to our guests.
How are you?
Thank you for coming.
Oh, it's so good to see you.
[Woman] Hey!
That's amazing.
Here, try one of mine.
Thank you.
Can I save it for later?
Sure.
Appreciate it.
(laughing)
- Oh, hi.
- How are you?
Good.
(women chatting softly)
Aw.
What's the matter with you?
Oh, sorry.
This is a bit above
my pay grade.
Travis and I have been
going to these for years.
Oh.
[Jill] I'm a bit bored.
Ah, of course.
[Jill] What's the
matter with you?
What's wrong, Kate?
Relax, have fun.
Tonight is celebration
about the old man.
The old man?
Forest Burnett, he's
running for city manager.
Oh, again he's running.
I thought he had
this all in the bag.
You need to learn how
things work around here.
Ah, okay, of course.
(upbeat honky tonk
music) (people chatting)
No, when I was a kid
I used to play it.
Yeah, well of course dad
wanted me to play tennis.
(glass clinking)
Of course.
Thank you, dear.
I wanna thank you
all for coming to
our humble gathering today,
not that you had a choice.
(laughing)
I wanna make a formal
announcement today to all of you,
friend and family alike,
that this year although I
have enjoyed the honor
of serving as your city manager,
this year I feel that I can
better serve this community
as your city councilman.
I'm running for the council.
(cheering) (applauding)
Thank you, thank you.
And I will need your
support, all of you,
and your votes, and most
importantly your generosity.
(laughing)
We live in a fine community,
all of you my friends
and neighbors.
I wanna thank you again
for coming out here today
and please don't be afraid
to give at the door now.
(laughing)
Enjoy the party
and the barbecue.
(applauding)
God bless ya.
(applauding)
(engine rumbles)
(car doors banging)
(laughing)
Oh I'm sorry, I
was just leaving.
[Forest] No, nonsense, no
stay, stay, stay, stay.
Okay, okay.
I'm being rude, I should
greet all the guests.
Emily, take those gimlets out
back would you please, dear?
Go.
I don't believe I
know you, young lady.
Ah, Kate Stenson.
My sister Jill is
married to Travis.
Ah, Stenson, I'll be damned.
I knew your daddy.
Oh.
Yeah, a good man.
Yeah.
How is it we haven't met at one
of these awful parties before?
I don't know.
Well, I've never been
invited before I guess.
Well, I'll tell my
wife about that
and get you on the guest list.
Okay.
Have you met my son Kenneth?
No.
No?
[Kate] Mmm-mmm.
Never?
Well we have to remedy
that, you come on with me.
Okay.
Kenneth?
Ken?
I'm speaking to you, son.
Daddy calls.
Meet Kate Stenson.
This is her first time
here at the house.
She wanted to meet you.
[Kate] Ah.
Well, nice to meet you, Kate.
Nice to meet you, Kenneth.
Call me Ken.
Kenneth sounds like
I'm being scolded.
Some barbecue?
Yeah, sure, yeah.
The best in the state.
Is it?
Oh, yeah.
Wow, okay.
Oh, thank you so much.
Here you go.
Yeah, this, this looks good.
It is good.
(laughing)
You don't think you're special
You don't think you're strong
But when the sky is falling
You feel like you belong
It might not be obvious
But you're not alone
We're gonna let you wander
But never on your own
And I don't know
if I can help you
You could tell me all you need
It's all right
You're wanted
Tonight it's all right
You're wanted
And your expectations
They're killing you slow
You're getting what you wanted
But pain is all you know
You've got a new life now
There's much that you see
But those that really know you
Are few and far between
Oh, hi honey.
[Forest] Hi Kate, Kenneth.
Hi, Dad.
Hi, Mr. Burnett.
Oh now what'd I tell you?
No more mister,
you're family now.
Come on.
Sorry.
Mmm, I am gonna get a refill.
Kate would you like one?
Um, I'm okay, thank you.
So how are those law
studies coming along, huh?
Good, good.
I mean, I graduate
next semester,
so it's been a little crazy.
Well, not this weekend.
You take a little
vacation, all right?
Rest your mind for a few days.
You hear me?
You got it.
We're actually looking forward
to a little relaxing time.
[Maureen] Honey.
You forget me?
Dad, I think we
want to do a little
freshening up before dinner.
Really?
That right?
Huh?
Forest.
They just got here...
Take it easy on that alcohol.
What'd I say?
We're with family.
I think I do want to freshen up.
Sure, sure.
After the long drive and all.
Go ahead.
I have a few things
to do this afternoon.
I'll see you all at dinner, hmm.
You know, she's a
good-lookin' girl.
You breeding cattle?
That's enough.
You go and straighten
yourself out before dinner.
You hear me?
No more of these.
(sighing)
(crying)
Oh!
That's all right.
Kate, it's all right.
Can I?
Do you need anything?
Thank you.
I'm, I'm fine.
I'm just a little emotional
seeing you both.
Anyway, there's a bathroom
down the hall that's free.
Right, okay.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
(crying)
(screaming)
(crying)
(soft instrumental music)
I simply can't understand
why the finance board would
say no to your proposal.
They mentioned about a
conflict of interest story.
[Forest] Let me finish.
Tech S has number
seven in the country.
[Woman] Yes, but that did not...
[Forest] And hundreds
of good tech jobs
sent into the region.
Yes.
I totally see your point.
I'll speak to them ASAP.
Don't you agree, Mayor?
I concur.
As always, our
thoughts are the same.
Would you excuse me
for a moment, please?
[Woman] Of course.
I'll be right back.
[Woman] Yes.
Hey, what's the matter with you?
What are you talking about?
What the hell are
you doing, boy?
Don't start with me, Dad.
First your mother, now you?
Get your ass back in there.
Leave me alone.
Shut up!
And get your ass back in there.
You know how hard
we've worked on this!
Dad, I don't...
You don't know what?
I don't know how I can do this.
You can start acting like a man.
Now don't you have an
announcement to make?
Time for make-believe?
Ah, you know, one day all
this is gonna be yours.
Could you at least
act like you care?
What, no smart ass
remark for that one?
Come on.
Hello. (Chuckles)
[Woman] So, going back to...
Well now, where were we?
[Woman] The construction
and what do you think, so?
Oh yeah, we have to
bring those jobs
into this region.
Mmm, of course.
That would be great.
[Forest] Yeah, don't
you feel that, Mayor?
Anything that's good
for my constituents
is good for my administration.
[Forest] Oh, well I'll
do everything I can,
I promise you that.
[Woman] Yeah, we need your help.
Mmm-hmm.
Folks, I have an
announcement to make.
These last few months
have been the happiest
of my life and Kate,
it's all because of you.
Mmm.
So, I'm truly blessed and
grateful to announce
in front of some of my
closest family and friends
that with all the
trouble in the world
and all the children
without, uh,
Kate and I have decided
to adopt a baby boy.
[Mayor] Beautiful!
[Woman] Congratulations!
Cheers!
I couldn't be happier.
[Mayor] Congratulations.
Cheers.
It's all gonna be taken care
of in the next few months.
Mmm, Kate.
Well done, well done, Kate.
Oh.
(laughing)
[Ken] Cheers.
So what do you think of the
new palace, Mrs. Burnett?
[Kate] I love it, Mr. Burnett.
And I think baby Burnett
will love it, too.
I kind of feel like
maybe you didn't
need your father's
money, though.
Oh, you know, it's
not his money.
It's actually mine.
Maybe not now, but I mean,
you know what I mean.
I just thought maybe
it would be nice
to have one thing that's ours.
Hey, don't worry about it, okay?
(insect buzzing)
Oh, mosquito.
Uh, an intruder?
Yeah, our first intruder.
Hold on, hold on, I got it.
No, wait!
Oh, geez, I lost him.
Oh man, cut your losses, cowboy.
(laughing)
What?
Nothing.
I love you.
I love you, too.
(upbeat country music)
(people talking in background)
[Logan] Bang, bang, you're dead!
You are a little monster.
Oh, he's just being a boy, is all.
(Chuckles)
Well, he certainly
has a lot of energy.
He's a little kid, Mom.
It's great to see the next
generation of Burnett.
I'm glad you approve.
[Kate] Thank you.
Oh, Mrs. Burnett.
I hate to do this, but we've had
a problem with Logan today.
What happened?
He's been hitting other kids.
[Kate] He what?
Yeah, and when I went
to go try to stop him,
he actually hit me, too.
He's a strong boy.
Logan, come here.
Emma, come here.
Did you hit someone?
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry for the trouble, Ms.
Burnett.
Don't be, I'm sorry.
Come on, let's go.
Oh-ho-ho.
Oh, look at this. (Laughing)
Nice leave.
Hi, Daddy.
Hey, baby.
And my other baby. (Laughing)
[Logan] Stop it, Dad!
You ready to go?
Why don't you guys go ahead?
I'll join you later.
Okay, but they're pretty tired,
so I think we should go now.
I heard you.
I said I'll join you later.
Watch this.
Oh, I scratched.
[Man] Don't worry, it's
only 20 bucks down.
(laughing)
Okay, come on, guys.
Let's go.
I'm gonna try to get the six.
(soft instrumental music)
(scissors snapping)
Hey, sweetie, no, no, no, no.
Don't play with these, okay?
These are really sharp, okay?
They'll hurt you.
Oh.
Hey, Logan.
Did you hit that boy today?
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to.
I'm sorry.
I know.
Okay.
So my father wants me to help
him with his new campaign.
Yeah, what'd you say?
Well, I don't know yet.
I got a good thing going
with this new venture.
Mmm.
Logan!
Logan, what are you doing?
(plate shattering)
Damn it!
[Kate] It's okay, I've got it.
No, no!
Let him pick it up!
[Kate] No, it's not a
big deal, I've got it.
No, let him do it!
It's fine, I got it.
He shouldn't be acting this way.
Hey, stop.
Yeah.
You need to keep
him under control.
That's gonna happen.
(dramatic synth music)
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Hey, hey, oh.
What is this?
They're trying to kill me!
[Kate] Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Hon.
Logan.
They're trying to kill me!
[Kate] No, no, no,
no, come here.
Sit down, it's okay, it's okay.
Logan needs to see a specialist.
I'm afraid this is something
that's completely
out of my wheelhouse.
I don't think it's a
good idea to leave
Logan alone with your daughter.
Okay, but what's the problem?
I know a great child
psychiatrist.
She can give you more insight.
Logan's symptoms, I just don't
know where they're leading.
It could be any of a
number of things.
Your son...
Well, he's adopted.
Right.
What can you tell me about
the mother, the family?
Nothing.
I don't know anything.
Why?
Well, knowing the
predisposition of the parents,
the family history, genetics,
these all go a long way
towards sorting out
what's really going
on with Logan.
Okay, but can you help?
Um...
Well, call this number.
Best child psychiatrist in town.
Okay.
She's a specialist over
at Children's Hospital.
She can give you more insight.
But just make the call.
Okay.
Um...
Can you stay on board with us?
I would just, I would feel
more comfortable because
you've been with us for so long.
Well, I understand.
Maybe I can arrange a time
when we can all meet here
in my office, say,
a couple of weeks,
under my supervision.
Okay, great.
Okay.
Hey, come on, sweetie.
Time to go.
Okay, baby.
(upbeat drum music)
[Pam] Anything else
you need, Kate?
No, thank you.
And thank you so much for all
of your help with Logan.
Has he eaten at all yet?
No.
No, no, no.
Shut up, shut up, shut up!
What's wrong, sweetie?
I'll kill you.
I'll kill you!
I'll kill you.
(dramatic music)
[Jill] Shelby and Sam
are gettin' so big.
They're eating so much.
Travis and I can't believe it.
Do they like Chicago?
[Jill] I think so.
They have lots of friends here.
And they love the snow.
It's still an
exciting, new thing.
Hmm.
[Jill] Things been any
better between you and Ken?
Ah, intimately?
No.
[Jill] No sex at all?
Okay, I don't really
want to talk about it.
[Jill] Did he say why?
Yeah, see, that's still
talking about it.
[Jill] Sounds like his father.
Oh, you're kidding, right?
'Cause Forest will
sleep with anything.
[Jill] How are the kids?
Well, Emma is beautiful.
And so is Logan.
You know, when he's
not acting up.
Kind of just turns
into another person.
It's a little scary.
[Jill] You should try
to find his parents.
Yeah, then what?
You know, what if I
don't want to know?
[Jill] Listen to me, there's
only one way to find out.
Besides, knowing a
child's health history
is really important.
I know.
[Jill] What does
Ken say about it?
He says don't worry about it.
You know, that his family's
gonna take care of it.
[Jill] Does that make
any sense to you?
Kate, you owe this to
yourself and your kids.
You owe it to that little boy.
He's little now.
What are you going to do
when Logan is a teenager?
You're not gettin'
any help from Ken.
Take it into your own hands.
Remember what Daddy
always used to say.
[Kate] Hmm.
[Kate and Jill] Always
finish what you started.
Thanks, Jill.
I miss you.
[Jill] I miss you, too.
Love you.
(solemn music)
(door clicking)
[Ken] Nice to see you, Dad.
What brings you here?
I had hoped we could have a
small meeting with Kate.
I wanted to have a
moment with you, too,
regarding Logan.
If it's not too
much of a bother.
(solemn music)
Forest, it's so nice
of you to stop by.
I'm sorry, Ken didn't
tell me you were coming.
Well, I was in the
neighborhood and I
thought I'd drop in and
discuss a few things
regarding my grandson.
I hope you don't mind.
The place looks nice.
I'm glad that Pam is
working out over here.
Yeah, no, thank you so much.
It's nice to have an
extra set of hands,
especially with Logan.
My pleasure, my pleasure.
You know, Kate, I've
been thinking about
my grandson's future.
School and the like, you know.
It's never too early to
think about those things,
and we really need to find
the right college for him.
How's that sound?
That sounds great.
Great, although he's only five.
You know, so the only
thing he's really
worried about right
now is what bike
we're gonna get him.
(laughing)
Well, I think you can
have that luxury
to feel that, but
as I was saying,
I think it's best
to set it up early.
You know how competitive
things can be these days.
And that boy is a Burnett, now.
Yes, yes, no, we
understand that for sure.
Mmm.
Oh, ah, these behavior issues.
Have they been resolved?
We're working on it.
There's been a lot
of back and forth.
The doctors are putting him
through a lot of tests.
They can't quite put
their finger on it yet.
Well, there's nothing
wrong with that boy.
Not a thing.
If anything Maureen or I can do,
we're right there for him.
That child is an
investment in our future.
You can see that can't you?
Okay, Dad, that's
enough, please.
I'm just trying
to help, Kenneth.
[Pam] Okey dokey.
There we go.
He's getting worse, isn't he?
Well, I don't mean to alarm
you, but this just...
It's okay, we're way past that.
Bugs! Bugs!
(stomping) (dramatic music)
[Kate] Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa!
What is it, bud?
Bugs!
No, no, no, sweetie.
There aren't any bugs here.
Bugs!
Sweetie, there aren't
any bugs here.
Okay, uh, Logan, Logan?
Stop.
Logan, let me check.
Let me check.
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Lookin', lookin',
there aren't any bug.
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Bugs, Logan.
Please stop.
Bugs!
What, what is it?
It's urine.
I don't like you.
(dramatic music)
Logan, please settle down.
I'm so sorry.
I'm fine.
I'm, I'm, I'm fine.
But look, Kate.
You are in over your head.
I know.
Now what are they doing?
What the doctors...
I know, I know, I'm
asking for help.
They said they're going
over all the tests.
I don't mean to
sound insensitive,
and I know this is hard,
but I don't think that
you can help him.
(Logan screaming in background)
Not here.
[Logan] Bugs!
I don't know what to do.
I'm sorry.
We'll keep him here under
observation for a week.
Don't worry.
I know that it seems...
What's wrong with him, Doctor?
What do you know about
Logan's birth mother?
What about? Not much.
Nothing really.
Why?
It would be very helpful
to know if there's
any significant history
of mental illness
or drug abuse with Logan's
biological mother
or father's family.
No, no, we don't know.
What about Logan?
Mr. Burnett, your grandson
is in good hands here.
You're starting to sound
like a politician.
[Forest] Doctor.
I'm sorry.
Thank you.
Call me every day.
I'll be around.
Between you and I,
there's absolutely no way
that the information
about Logan's birth mother
isn't readily available,
especially to a family
of your stature.
It's important that
we know more about.
Logan's medical history.
She's right, Kate.
I understand.
I'll be in touch.
Okay, thank you.
I'm sorry, Maureen.
I meant to call you.
It's been really busy.
What, what are you
doing here again?
I'm here to help you.
Really?
Well, don't look so surprised.
I'm sorry, I didn't
mean it like that.
Shoot.
Oh.
- Honey, I got it.
- No, it's...
[Maureen] I got it.
Sorry.
No, Kate, it's me who's sorry.
It's quiet.
Without Logan, you mean?
No, that's not what I mean.
You deserve a medal for
looking after that child.
He's my son.
He's a Burnett, that's for sure.
What do you mean?
(laughing)
Nothing, nothing.
I'm just saying, that's all.
Mmm, we have an event
tonight for the election.
Some of the donors
are sponsoring
another fricking
barbecue dinner.
Excuse my French.
Just put on a smile. (Chuckles)
Mmm, I should be going.
Are you all right?
Thank you.
For what?
Being nice to me.
(laughing)
Don't tell anyone.
(soft piano music)
Oh, hi.
Hi.
I thought you were gonna
be at the campaign office.
So the doctor thinks
we should look into
getting medical histories
for Logan's birth parents.
Not now, Kate.
This is our son.
Don't you think it's
weird that we don't
have access to anything?
Kate, I said not now.
Have you been drinking?
Lay off me.
I mean, it's three
in the afternoon.
(footsteps clomping)
(sighing)
(soft piano music)
(keyboard clicking)
(soft instrumental music)
[Emily] Hey, it's Emily.
Just leave a message.
(long tone beeping)
Uh, hi Emily.
You don't know who this is.
My name is Katherine Burnett
and my husband and I
adopted your son Logan
and he's having some issues.
So I was hoping I could ask you
a couple of questions maybe,
if you wouldn't mind.
Okay, I hope to
hear from you soon.
Please.
Thank you.
Go ahead.
Your son suffers from
schizoaffective disorder.
What?
What the hell does that mean?
Dad, please.
No, just, what does
that mean for us?
Periods of mania and depression,
as well as hallucinations
and delusions.
In short, Logan sees
things that aren't there.
Lizards and bugs
and just recently
a man called Owen
who's after him.
It's not uncommon to develop
it at an earlier age,
but with Logan, it's
augmented by periods
of extreme violence.
Oh come on, he's just a kid.
Kid or not, Logan
acts without remorse.
So what are you
gonna do for him?
Well, we could keep him sedated,
but the truth is he's
only gonna get worse.
I don't want to hear anymore.
Kate, I know this is hard.
This is crazy.
Logan poses a very real
physical danger to
himself and others.
I know this might be
very hard to hear,
but I suggest that you
hospitalize Logan.
I don't know what the hell
you're talking about,
but we're not lockin' that
boy up in an institution.
No.
You got nothin' to say here?
This is horse crap.
I am sorry.
I am so very sorry.
(birds chirping)
Hi, baby.
Cool.
You like that?
Ooh, look at those.
Yeah, that's so cool.
Momma?
Yes?
Is Logan gonna be okay?
Of course.
Why is everyone sad?
He's gonna be fine.
Where's Daddy?
Do you wanna go watch some TV?
Yeah?
Can I pick the show?
You can totally pick the show.
(Giggling)
(light playful music)
Hi, sweetie.
Wanna watch TV with us?
What's behind your back, bud?
(soft dramatic music)
What do you have, bud?
What do you have
behind your back?
(scissors swishing) (screaming)
Logan, no!
Give me the scissors.
Give me the scissors.
The scissors now.
Give it, Logan!
Ken!
Let me see, come on, let me see.
[Ken] What is going on?
[Kate] I don't know, I don't
know, he just came out here.
Bang, bang!
[Kate] Can you come?
[Ken] Wait, Logan!
Come back here!
Logan, get back here!
[Logan] I'll kill
you, I'll kill you!
No!
(car screeching)
Logan, no!
(soft solemn music)
I tried.
We tried to get back to living.
I thought Ken and I
would be closer.
Lean on each other.
I was wrong.
How could they let this happen?
How?
Damn it.
(crying)
(phone buzzing)
Hello?
[Man] Mrs. Burnett?
This is she.
Who is this?
[Man] Trevor.
Trevor Searcy.
I'm sorry, who is this?
Trevor Searcy.
We, uh...
We read about...
Oh my God.
I'm so glad you called.
Glad? I'm not.
My wife and I, we read about
Logan in the paper.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
The boy.
That's why we called.
Can we meet?
In person?
There ah, there's just, there's
a lot that I need to know.
[Trevor] What difference
would that make?
Maybe nothing.
Maybe we can help each other.
[Trevor] Still don't
know what difference it
would make, but ah,
my wife.
Okay.
Yeah, okay.
Tell me where to be.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey.
All right, stop it.
(bright instrumental music)
Once the dying leaves
lay upon the ground
I start to believe
Tides begin to turn
As the season
breathes a life in me
We fool the light
Move again
See what you'll find
Somebody hopes
Live again
Somebody dies
Yeah
Can you feel
Feel that we are autumn bound
Can you feel
Things are gonna turn around
Take the leap
Live with your
feet on the ground
Oh yeah, summer is gone
Time to be moving on
(buzzer buzzing)
[Trevor] Kate?
Hi.
Come on in.
This is my wife Dotty.
Hi.
Nice to meet you.
Can I get you some sweet tea?
Sure, thank you.
Have a seat.
Thank you, you're so sweet.
Okay, so I was hoping we
could talk about Emily.
Emily?
Is she here?
No, she's not.
She's gone.
But we, ah...
We don't know where she is.
Really?
That's what she said.
So when I called
her cellphone...
She left it, we keep it.
[Kate] But why wouldn't
she take it with her?
What do you care, Mrs. Burnett?
Why are you askin' that?
We are parents, damn it.
She's our daughter.
You're a mother,
what would you do?
She disappears for
long period of time.
We hoped that she may
call the damn thing,
so we keep it, okay?
That's it?
Well...
We read about Logan and um...
And we got that voicemail
message from you.
Yeah.
And then we decided
we should call you.
And find out what
the hell happened.
Tell me what happened!
(fist banging)
Shh.
Well, Logan had severe
behavioral issues.
Violent and delusions.
He was seeing things
that weren't there.
I, it was scary.
I didn't...
The doctor told us to see
if we could find out
anything about his
biological family.
That's why I called Emily
because I was hoping
maybe she could
tell me something.
Is there something?
Emily had a drug problem
for a long time.
While she was pregnant she
was battling with heroin.
We tried to help when
the devil got his arms
wrapped around you.
The doctor said it was possible
that the infant, well...
Look, all I know is my
grandchild is dead.
Can you please tell
us what happened?
My husband nev,
Ken.
Never told me anything about
the adoption process.
Ken, huh?
Well, look.
All we know, we thought she
was back on that stuff
when she decided to put
the kid up for adoption.
Best for the child, she said.
Then she just took off.
We don't know where.
So the Burnetts,
where do they...
Listen, it was kind of
the Burnetts to come in
and to take care and to adopt.
It was kind of them.
And the father?
Do you know where he is?
I don't know.
She never told us.
We don't know who,
what, or where.
But not a name or anything?
What did we say?
We had no options.
We were not in the position
to take care of a child.
They've been good to us over
the years, the Burnetts.
Givin' Emily work
despite her issues.
So Emily worked for them?
Yes, why?
For several years.
I never liked that man.
Squirrely-eyed piece of sh...
Yeah.
I'm sorry I don't have
more answers for you.
The Burnetts.
They can help you.
The Burnetts can help me?
Maybe.
I'm a Burnett.
But you're not like them.
I can tell.
[Maureen] Nice of
you to come, Kate.
[Kate] Don't ask surprised.
[Maureen] Touche.
I wanted to stop by and
see how you were doing.
See how Forest is doing.
Forest is torn up.
He really did love that child.
Yeah, I'll bet.
Need to ask you a favor.
His bank accounts, do you
have access to those?
What do you mean?
I need to find out a few things.
That is none of your business.
This is important.
Did you hear what I said?
And what in God's name
do you need to know?
She worked for you guys
from time to time, right?
I was hoping you could
help me figure out
where she comes into play.
Maybe you should go home now.
Soon.
Here's some advice.
You are walking into
a world that you
know nothing about.
Listen to yourself.
That doesn't even make sense.
Why can't you stand up for
yourself for once, Maureen?
I need your help.
You don't always have
to look the other way.
Well, that is a
fine speech, Kate.
But we, you and I,
we both do it.
You just don't know it yet.
(laughing)
It's called survival.
And you'll get there.
I can't even remember when
it got its hooks in me.
Yeah, and when does that end?
End?
It never ends.
Welcome to my hell.
Emily Searcy.
Help me.
Maybe we can fix all of this.
I can't do it without you.
Please help me figure out
what happened to my son.
Maybe you should go now.
Forget today.
No!
No.
Wait here for me.
(soft instrumental music)
Sorry.
Keep it.
You didn't get this from me.
Payments to the McKibbon Realty
corporate apartment complex
just outside Clarksdale.
Monthly.
He didn't think I
looked at the payments,
didn't know about the
women, all of it.
You know what you have
that I never had?
What?
A choice
to walk away.
(keyboard clicking)
(upbeat funk music)
Okay, so she likes to
read, which is fine,
but only like half an
hour if that's okay.
Yes, I know, Mrs. Burnett.
And you have my
cellphone so you can
call me if you need anything?
Yes.
Anything else?
Don't worry, Emma
and I will be fine.
We'll see you later tonight.
Okay.
Oh, ah...
No, okay, okay.
I got in my car
I got stopped by
the police, yeah
Lord knows I didn't get far
I had to pay that fine, man
Nothing I could say or do
The clock is ticking
Just another day
for me and you
A lot of pressure, baby
A lot of pressure building up
(beeping)
Gotta make that money
Before it's too late
(beeping) (ringing)
[Emily] Who is it?
Hi, um...
This is a friend
of Forest Burnett.
[Emily] A friend of Forest?
Isn't he coming?
Yes, no, well he wanted to,
but he couldn't, so he
sent me to check in on you
and bring you some stuff.
(buzzer buzzing)
(knocking)
Emily?
Did you bring groceries?
Usually he sends someone
with groceries.
No, uh, I'm just here to um,
check on ya.
Who are you?
Do I know you?
No.
You said you're a
friend of Forest's?
Yeah.
He just wanted me to stop by
and see how you're feeling.
I'll be well enough
to go home soon,
to be with my son.
He told me so.
Logan, right?
He's your son?
Yeah.
Do you know him?
You should sit.
It's okay, just sit down.
He's my little angel.
Isn't he handsome? (Chuckles)
[Kate] Very.
He looks just like his father.
Do you know Forest?
We'll be married soon.
As soon as he divorces
that cow Maureen.
Oh, do you know her?
Dark cloud.
It's her fault.
Fricking bitch Maureen.
All of it.
She should just die!
You know, I don't understand
why it's so hard for her!
She should just go away!
Yeah, you know what?
[Emily] It would
be so much easier.
I think I'm done here.
Wait, is something wrong?
No, no, no, no, no.
How is my little boy?
Are they treating him all right?
Everything is fine.
I saw him a little while
ago from a distance.
He was at the park
with Maureen and Forest.
But he looked happy, right?
Yeah.
Hmm.
(crying)
(soft dramatic music)
(crying)
[Rocco] Ken, you
have to tell her.
I don't know.
All I can think about is...
I know.
I know, Logan.
I failed.
What have I done?
No, you've done a lot.
Don't do that to yourself.
Enough, okay?
[Rocco] None of it matters
anymore, don't you see?
What do you mean?
I love you.
I love you.
Leave her.
Be with me.
I'd lose everything.
I mean, don't you understand?
I'd be ruined.
I mean, is that what you want?
No, of course not.
You know I don't want that.
I can't.
[Rocco] Why?
(door clicking)
Hi.
[Ken] Hi.
Keep your voice down, okay?
Emma's sleeping.
How was Atlanta?
Uh, good.
Closed the Hendrick account.
What's up, Kate?
What's bothering you?
I don't think you
were in Atlanta.
Then you know something I don't.
Is there something
you want to tell me?
What are you talking about?
Keep your voice down.
It's a question.
Are you having an
affair with the man
from Logan's wake?
I am so sick of you and
your frickin' family.
Say something to me, please!
What am I supposed to do?
What am I supposed to
do about our marriage?
I'm gonna tell your family.
Tell them what?
All of it.
About you, about our marriage,
about your friend in Atlanta.
Everything.
They already know.
What?
Why do you think they
had me marry you?
You're the perfect wife,
the perfect cover
for their freakin'
failure of a son.
You think I want
to live like this?
All you had to do was look
pretty and have a son.
But you failed!
Shut up.
You fouled up the one
thing that you had to do,
the one thing.
And Logan?
What about him?
You knew.
You knew and you still
let me adopt him.
My father's bastard son?
Yeah, he's your brother.
Oh my God, I'm gonna
be sick to my stomach.
You played father
to your brother.
I can't do this anymore.
I want a divorce.
My father will never allow it.
Oh, you...
Forget your father.
He's going to jail anyway.
Come on, Kate, don't
be stupid, okay?
My family knows every
judge in this county.
It doesn't matter what you know.
It dies here, tonight.
But she was 16 years old.
Who? Emily Searcy?
She left a long time ago.
No she didn't.
I saw her myself.
Yeah, you think she's
gonna help you?
Or her parents?
We own them.
You sold your soul, too.
It was never mine to begin with.
(soft instrumental music)
(door clicking)
(car engine starting)
Dad, she knows.
We need to talk.
(door creaking)
Okay.
This is just for a
little while, okay?
This side's mine.
Okay.
I took Emma.
The only thing the Burnett
family cared about,
and we moved.
Told Ken I would be
filing for divorce,
and the Burnetts started
doing their spin.
No lawyer would touch me.
Oh!
Shoot.
Sorry.
(door bells jingling)
Kate?
No.
Please, Kate.
All right, this is
no state for you
and Emma to be living in.
(laughing)
You can call.
You don't understand.
My father's running for office.
And I'm his son, okay?
And technically
you're still my wife.
Why don't we just
keep up appearances?
Is that supposed to be a joke?
We can make a deal.
You can live in another
section of the house.
Okay, you and Emma will
be very comfortable.
Just come home.
Okay.
You need to leave now.
You won't win.
My father won't allow it.
He'll take Emma away from you.
Yeah.
My father always wins.
I could help you now,
but if it gets too
late and goes too far,
I can't help you at all.
Think about it.
(soft instrumental music)
(phone ringtone music)
Hello?
[Man] Hi, is this Kate Burnett?
It is.
Who is this?
[Man] My name is Jax Harper.
I'm a journalist with
the Clarksdale Times.
How did you get my number?
[Jax] I have my sources.
Mrs. Burnett, there's
rumors going 'round
about you and your husband
and I would love to sit down
and discuss those rumors.
Yeah, you know what?
I don't think I
really want to...
[Jax] Mrs. Burnett,
I think I might be
able to help you.
How?
(patrons murmuring)
Ms. Burnett?
Nice to meet you, Mrs. Burnett.
Please have a seat.
Okay, but don't call me that.
I hate that name.
It's Kate.
So what's the rumor that
you heard about me?
That you and your
husband are separated,
maybe because of a certain
lifestyle choice.
And that he won't
give you a divorce.
What do you want, Mr. Harper?
Please, call me Jax.
Okay.
What do you want, Jax?
You need an ally, someone
to fight the Burnetts.
They think they own this town.
You give me an exclusive,
I'll make you front
page material.
Then he can't touch you.
And what's in it for you?
If it bleeds, it leads.
I am a journalist, right?
Yeah.
Kate.
You can't do this alone.
They have everyone
in their pockets.
I don't give a damn,
but nobody outruns bad press.
It's your only shot.
Old Man Burnett's
running for reelection.
The time to hit him is now.
I'll think about it.
You can finally be free.
Free to live your own life.
Call me.
Hey, munchkin.
Hop on up.
Uh, you're gettin' so big.
How are you doin'?
I'm fine.
I just miss Logan.
I do, too.
How was school?
It was fine.
Yeah?
What's that?
What?
Your necklace.
Grandpa gave it to me.
Isn't it pretty?
When did you see Grandpa?
Emma?
Hey, it's okay.
When did you see Grandpa?
He came by school.
(banging)
Forest!
Forest!
Forest, get out here right now!
(banging) (doorbell ringing)
Kate? Honey, what?
Where is he?
Forest, get out here!
Hey, hey, what's
all the shouting?
What's wrong?
I don't want you to see
my daughter again.
What do you mean?
What is this?
What is this?
I gave that to Emma.
It's a gift from
her grandfather.
You are not allowed
to see her again!
I went to see my granddaughter.
I don't get to see her...
No, you do not!
You are not allowed to
see my daughter again!
Who the hell do you think
you're talkin' to, huh?
You think I give a
damn what you want?
Emma is a Burnett.
Whether you like it or not.
I'm gonna say this
one more time.
You stay away from her!
You get off my porch
before I lose my manners.
You understand me?
You're embarrassing
yourself, girl!
(necklace clinking)
(footsteps clomping)
Hi.
Thank you for coming so late.
I just got off work.
I was expecting
to hear from you.
Coffee?
Oh, thank you.
Mmm-hmm.
Hmm.
I don't really know
where to start.
Start from the beginning.
Okay, well, thanks for the ride.
Of course.
You did great tonight.
Really.
Got a lot of really good stuff.
You think we have a chance?
Chance?
This article,
I would not want to be him.
Or his robot son
for that matter.
But...
[Kate] But?
Well, birth certificate
would help.
For Logan.
Hard evidence.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I'm sure the
Burnett's have that.
What about Emily?
She hold onto
anything like that?
I don't know.
She's not really
all there, though.
What's there to lose?
I'll do my best.
Have a good night.
You, too.
Hi, can I put this down here?
Okay, okay.
Um, I'm hungry.
What did you bring?
Peanut butter sandwich?
Sure.
Okay.
So, I was hoping we could
talk about your boy.
Isn't he handsome?
He has his daddy's
eyes, you know?
I'll bet you have
lots of stuff of his.
Yeah.
Sure, his daddy gives me stuff.
He's so smart.
Such a smart little
boy, you know?
I don't even mind.
I just...
Actually I do mind being
so alone, you know?
Yeah.
But it's for the best.
That's what Forest says,
because of my condition.
Anyways, sometimes I,
I make copies of things
before he takes them back
so that I can look
at them anytime.
I just really miss
him, you know?
Sure.
Understandable.
I'm sure you have lots of
pictures like from the hospital
when he was born.
I'd love to see 'em.
Why would you want that?
He told me not to give
anything to anybody.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
That's not...
Get out!
I just wanted to...
No, get the freak out.
That's, I'm...
No, you want to
take my baby away!
You're not gonna do it!
I'll kill you!
You need to go!
Sit down, sit down!
I don't want to take your child.
I have to do something.
(dramatic music)
[Emily's Voice] I
make copies of things
before he gives them back to me.
He told me not to give
anything to anybody.
Get out.
You want to take my baby away?
You're not gonna do it!
I'll kill you!
Get out!
(dramatic music)
Get out!
(soft dramatic music)
Jax, I got it.
I got it.
(car engine starting)
(birds chirping)
You said you would
take care of this.
Now what?
Forest, you destroyed
our family.
You.
You and you.
I told both of you.
What'd I say?
Stay away from that girl.
What did you tell her?
You did this.
Me?
The only mistake I
made was to allow,
to close my eyes to all of this.
To think that some day
it would all end.
God, I worked so
hard for so long.
You can't even control
your own God damn wife.
And I told you to stay
away from your friend.
Dad, I couldn't be
exactly who you wanted.
Mom and I...
You're pathetic!
You know that?
You're a poor excuse for a son
and for a Burnett.
You know, stop it, okay?
I've had enough of you!
Forest.
Forest!
I have listened
and done everything
you asked me to do
our entire lives.
Please,
just this once,
listen to me now.
What?
Embrace it.
Embrace it?
What does that mean?
Our son, Ken.
Let him live his life publicly.
And we will put all our
support behind him.
You mean embrace that
I have a gay son?
Yes.
Think about it.
All those speeches
you served up,
equal rights for all.
Start with our son.
And just like you said,
save everything that we
have worked so hard for
our entire lives.
Huh.
[Ken] Dad, look at me.
Huh?
I know I can't be the
son you want me to be
and I'm fine with that.
But I still want this life.
And that means I want
you to win, okay?
And this can help.
The campaign, the Burnetts.
Well, I don't know.
What about Logan?
Maureen, this could ruin me.
We could lose everything.
(soft instrumental music)
I can't thank you
enough for everything.
No, thank you.
Got me back where I belong.
Front page.
Get out of here.
Got some really good
offers coming in, so.
Well, you helped me get
my life back together,
so even trade.
It was my pleasure.
Good evening, everyone.
It's a beautiful night
here in Clarksdale.
But who am I kidding?
Every night here in
Clarksdale is beautiful.
(laughing)
Ah.
Yes, well.
For the last three years
you have entrusted
this city to my mayorship.
And I'm here tonight to
ask you for your support
and to give me the honor
of another four years
of service to you.
[Jax] Take care of yourself.
You, too.
Now if there's one thing
I know about Clarksdale,
it's that we honor
our traditions.
We honor time-trusted
Christian ideals of family.
I understand and I
have understood
those traditions and I've
tried to honor them.
I also understand the
value of progress.
That we know that sometimes
we have to leave
certain things behind
in order to move forward.
Now I have made many mistakes.
Many.
But I think it is most important
to recognize those mistakes
and learn from them.
Now, I love my son, Kenneth.
I'm very proud of him
and of all of his
accomplishments.
And I'm proud of him
for being who he is.
And so it is with
great pride that I
share with you that
my son Kenneth's gay.
And I want him to know
that finding happiness
is his right.
That small actions
can be like pebbles
being thrown into a still lake,
causing ripples of hope
to cascade outwards
and change the world.
And so I give you my action.
And I ask that my wife,
my beautiful wife Maureen
and my son Kenneth stand by me
as we ask you to join us
in bringing Clarksdale
into the future.
We thank you.
God bless you.
And God bless this
wonderful city.
(soft instrumental music)
Mom!
I'm running out of room
for all of my books.
Uh-oh.
Well, um, leave 'em there
and we'll get you new ones.
Right?
They have books
in Chicago, yeah?
Yeah, they sure do.
[Emma] But I want my books.
Oh, okay.
Well, how about you
go back inside
and I will help you try
and fit 'em all in there.
We'll see how that goes.
(laughing)
Kate, hey.
Hey.
Yeah.
[Jill] Kate.
Yeah.
You're doing the right thing.
You think so?
Yeah, I think so.
Hmm.
(soft instrumental music)
As for Forest, well, he went
on to win the election,
just as planned, I guess.
And Ken, he and Rocco lived
together for a few years.
Then Rocco moved to New
York and Ken stayed behind.
Guess the leash Forest had
just wasn't long enough.
(laughing)
Here we go.
Woo-hoo, Chicago!
Here we come!
[Kate] Losing everything
wasn't the problem.
That can be the
cost of redemption.
But who I was, my identity,
where did it go?
It's like looking at a
broken mirror, shattered.
Parts of you all over
the floor staring back.
There's still time for
me to pick the pieces up
and glue them back together.
I have my daughter, my life,
and now my soul.
I know who I am again.
(inspiring instrumental music)
I wish I could tell you
How I feel
But I don't want to open scars
That took so long to heal
I wish I could get you
In a crowded room
Tell everyone
What you put me through
But I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
Away from you
Trapped inside this mind
I'm caught between the rocks
Wishing to claim back
To my life on top
I'd push you down your hill
Just to break your will
And break your every fall
And keep you as my all
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
To get away from you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
(upbeat rock music)
You always left
me wantin' more
Like I waited for a break
Or crashin' on heaven's floor
You said you cared
But never opened up the door
I'm lying here on the ground
Staring up at the stars
And dreamin' of a better round
I would do things differently
So get me on the soonest train
'Cause no matter what it costs
Well I'm gonna find a way
I'm goin' back there again
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
Away from you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
I can't get away
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
(soft piano music)
(solemn instrumental music)
[Kate] I really don't
know where to start.
So many things I could
have done differently.
I would ask myself if I
allowed it to happen.
But I already know the answer.
I look around at all of it now.
Was it worth it?
How many lives destroyed?
How much is enough?
(solemn instrumental music)
Spring was a beautiful
time in Clarksdale.
It was also the time
when the Burnetts,
the town's most
well-to-do family,
would throw their
annual spring party.
The Burnett's practically
ran the town
and they wore their wealth well.
Everyone wanted to be a
part of their circle.
Forest Burnett was heir
to a timber fortune
and ran his company between
Clarksdale and Atlanta.
If you wanna go out
riding baby late at night
Kiss and love and hug
me til the morning light
I'll do it
If you want me to
Ha!
[Rocco] I give up, let's
just say hi to our guests.
How are you?
Thank you for coming.
Oh, it's so good to see you.
[Woman] Hey!
That's amazing.
Here, try one of mine.
Thank you.
Can I save it for later?
Sure.
Appreciate it.
(laughing)
- Oh, hi.
- How are you?
Good.
(women chatting softly)
Aw.
What's the matter with you?
Oh, sorry.
This is a bit above
my pay grade.
Travis and I have been
going to these for years.
Oh.
[Jill] I'm a bit bored.
Ah, of course.
[Jill] What's the
matter with you?
What's wrong, Kate?
Relax, have fun.
Tonight is celebration
about the old man.
The old man?
Forest Burnett, he's
running for city manager.
Oh, again he's running.
I thought he had
this all in the bag.
You need to learn how
things work around here.
Ah, okay, of course.
(upbeat honky tonk
music) (people chatting)
No, when I was a kid
I used to play it.
Yeah, well of course dad
wanted me to play tennis.
(glass clinking)
Of course.
Thank you, dear.
I wanna thank you
all for coming to
our humble gathering today,
not that you had a choice.
(laughing)
I wanna make a formal
announcement today to all of you,
friend and family alike,
that this year although I
have enjoyed the honor
of serving as your city manager,
this year I feel that I can
better serve this community
as your city councilman.
I'm running for the council.
(cheering) (applauding)
Thank you, thank you.
And I will need your
support, all of you,
and your votes, and most
importantly your generosity.
(laughing)
We live in a fine community,
all of you my friends
and neighbors.
I wanna thank you again
for coming out here today
and please don't be afraid
to give at the door now.
(laughing)
Enjoy the party
and the barbecue.
(applauding)
God bless ya.
(applauding)
(engine rumbles)
(car doors banging)
(laughing)
Oh I'm sorry, I
was just leaving.
[Forest] No, nonsense, no
stay, stay, stay, stay.
Okay, okay.
I'm being rude, I should
greet all the guests.
Emily, take those gimlets out
back would you please, dear?
Go.
I don't believe I
know you, young lady.
Ah, Kate Stenson.
My sister Jill is
married to Travis.
Ah, Stenson, I'll be damned.
I knew your daddy.
Oh.
Yeah, a good man.
Yeah.
How is it we haven't met at one
of these awful parties before?
I don't know.
Well, I've never been
invited before I guess.
Well, I'll tell my
wife about that
and get you on the guest list.
Okay.
Have you met my son Kenneth?
No.
No?
[Kate] Mmm-mmm.
Never?
Well we have to remedy
that, you come on with me.
Okay.
Kenneth?
Ken?
I'm speaking to you, son.
Daddy calls.
Meet Kate Stenson.
This is her first time
here at the house.
She wanted to meet you.
[Kate] Ah.
Well, nice to meet you, Kate.
Nice to meet you, Kenneth.
Call me Ken.
Kenneth sounds like
I'm being scolded.
Some barbecue?
Yeah, sure, yeah.
The best in the state.
Is it?
Oh, yeah.
Wow, okay.
Oh, thank you so much.
Here you go.
Yeah, this, this looks good.
It is good.
(laughing)
You don't think you're special
You don't think you're strong
But when the sky is falling
You feel like you belong
It might not be obvious
But you're not alone
We're gonna let you wander
But never on your own
And I don't know
if I can help you
You could tell me all you need
It's all right
You're wanted
Tonight it's all right
You're wanted
And your expectations
They're killing you slow
You're getting what you wanted
But pain is all you know
You've got a new life now
There's much that you see
But those that really know you
Are few and far between
Oh, hi honey.
[Forest] Hi Kate, Kenneth.
Hi, Dad.
Hi, Mr. Burnett.
Oh now what'd I tell you?
No more mister,
you're family now.
Come on.
Sorry.
Mmm, I am gonna get a refill.
Kate would you like one?
Um, I'm okay, thank you.
So how are those law
studies coming along, huh?
Good, good.
I mean, I graduate
next semester,
so it's been a little crazy.
Well, not this weekend.
You take a little
vacation, all right?
Rest your mind for a few days.
You hear me?
You got it.
We're actually looking forward
to a little relaxing time.
[Maureen] Honey.
You forget me?
Dad, I think we
want to do a little
freshening up before dinner.
Really?
That right?
Huh?
Forest.
They just got here...
Take it easy on that alcohol.
What'd I say?
We're with family.
I think I do want to freshen up.
Sure, sure.
After the long drive and all.
Go ahead.
I have a few things
to do this afternoon.
I'll see you all at dinner, hmm.
You know, she's a
good-lookin' girl.
You breeding cattle?
That's enough.
You go and straighten
yourself out before dinner.
You hear me?
No more of these.
(sighing)
(crying)
Oh!
That's all right.
Kate, it's all right.
Can I?
Do you need anything?
Thank you.
I'm, I'm fine.
I'm just a little emotional
seeing you both.
Anyway, there's a bathroom
down the hall that's free.
Right, okay.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
(crying)
(screaming)
(crying)
(soft instrumental music)
I simply can't understand
why the finance board would
say no to your proposal.
They mentioned about a
conflict of interest story.
[Forest] Let me finish.
Tech S has number
seven in the country.
[Woman] Yes, but that did not...
[Forest] And hundreds
of good tech jobs
sent into the region.
Yes.
I totally see your point.
I'll speak to them ASAP.
Don't you agree, Mayor?
I concur.
As always, our
thoughts are the same.
Would you excuse me
for a moment, please?
[Woman] Of course.
I'll be right back.
[Woman] Yes.
Hey, what's the matter with you?
What are you talking about?
What the hell are
you doing, boy?
Don't start with me, Dad.
First your mother, now you?
Get your ass back in there.
Leave me alone.
Shut up!
And get your ass back in there.
You know how hard
we've worked on this!
Dad, I don't...
You don't know what?
I don't know how I can do this.
You can start acting like a man.
Now don't you have an
announcement to make?
Time for make-believe?
Ah, you know, one day all
this is gonna be yours.
Could you at least
act like you care?
What, no smart ass
remark for that one?
Come on.
Hello. (Chuckles)
[Woman] So, going back to...
Well now, where were we?
[Woman] The construction
and what do you think, so?
Oh yeah, we have to
bring those jobs
into this region.
Mmm, of course.
That would be great.
[Forest] Yeah, don't
you feel that, Mayor?
Anything that's good
for my constituents
is good for my administration.
[Forest] Oh, well I'll
do everything I can,
I promise you that.
[Woman] Yeah, we need your help.
Mmm-hmm.
Folks, I have an
announcement to make.
These last few months
have been the happiest
of my life and Kate,
it's all because of you.
Mmm.
So, I'm truly blessed and
grateful to announce
in front of some of my
closest family and friends
that with all the
trouble in the world
and all the children
without, uh,
Kate and I have decided
to adopt a baby boy.
[Mayor] Beautiful!
[Woman] Congratulations!
Cheers!
I couldn't be happier.
[Mayor] Congratulations.
Cheers.
It's all gonna be taken care
of in the next few months.
Mmm, Kate.
Well done, well done, Kate.
Oh.
(laughing)
[Ken] Cheers.
So what do you think of the
new palace, Mrs. Burnett?
[Kate] I love it, Mr. Burnett.
And I think baby Burnett
will love it, too.
I kind of feel like
maybe you didn't
need your father's
money, though.
Oh, you know, it's
not his money.
It's actually mine.
Maybe not now, but I mean,
you know what I mean.
I just thought maybe
it would be nice
to have one thing that's ours.
Hey, don't worry about it, okay?
(insect buzzing)
Oh, mosquito.
Uh, an intruder?
Yeah, our first intruder.
Hold on, hold on, I got it.
No, wait!
Oh, geez, I lost him.
Oh man, cut your losses, cowboy.
(laughing)
What?
Nothing.
I love you.
I love you, too.
(upbeat country music)
(people talking in background)
[Logan] Bang, bang, you're dead!
You are a little monster.
Oh, he's just being a boy, is all.
(Chuckles)
Well, he certainly
has a lot of energy.
He's a little kid, Mom.
It's great to see the next
generation of Burnett.
I'm glad you approve.
[Kate] Thank you.
Oh, Mrs. Burnett.
I hate to do this, but we've had
a problem with Logan today.
What happened?
He's been hitting other kids.
[Kate] He what?
Yeah, and when I went
to go try to stop him,
he actually hit me, too.
He's a strong boy.
Logan, come here.
Emma, come here.
Did you hit someone?
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry for the trouble, Ms.
Burnett.
Don't be, I'm sorry.
Come on, let's go.
Oh-ho-ho.
Oh, look at this. (Laughing)
Nice leave.
Hi, Daddy.
Hey, baby.
And my other baby. (Laughing)
[Logan] Stop it, Dad!
You ready to go?
Why don't you guys go ahead?
I'll join you later.
Okay, but they're pretty tired,
so I think we should go now.
I heard you.
I said I'll join you later.
Watch this.
Oh, I scratched.
[Man] Don't worry, it's
only 20 bucks down.
(laughing)
Okay, come on, guys.
Let's go.
I'm gonna try to get the six.
(soft instrumental music)
(scissors snapping)
Hey, sweetie, no, no, no, no.
Don't play with these, okay?
These are really sharp, okay?
They'll hurt you.
Oh.
Hey, Logan.
Did you hit that boy today?
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to.
I'm sorry.
I know.
Okay.
So my father wants me to help
him with his new campaign.
Yeah, what'd you say?
Well, I don't know yet.
I got a good thing going
with this new venture.
Mmm.
Logan!
Logan, what are you doing?
(plate shattering)
Damn it!
[Kate] It's okay, I've got it.
No, no!
Let him pick it up!
[Kate] No, it's not a
big deal, I've got it.
No, let him do it!
It's fine, I got it.
He shouldn't be acting this way.
Hey, stop.
Yeah.
You need to keep
him under control.
That's gonna happen.
(dramatic synth music)
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Hey, hey, oh.
What is this?
They're trying to kill me!
[Kate] Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Hon.
Logan.
They're trying to kill me!
[Kate] No, no, no,
no, come here.
Sit down, it's okay, it's okay.
Logan needs to see a specialist.
I'm afraid this is something
that's completely
out of my wheelhouse.
I don't think it's a
good idea to leave
Logan alone with your daughter.
Okay, but what's the problem?
I know a great child
psychiatrist.
She can give you more insight.
Logan's symptoms, I just don't
know where they're leading.
It could be any of a
number of things.
Your son...
Well, he's adopted.
Right.
What can you tell me about
the mother, the family?
Nothing.
I don't know anything.
Why?
Well, knowing the
predisposition of the parents,
the family history, genetics,
these all go a long way
towards sorting out
what's really going
on with Logan.
Okay, but can you help?
Um...
Well, call this number.
Best child psychiatrist in town.
Okay.
She's a specialist over
at Children's Hospital.
She can give you more insight.
But just make the call.
Okay.
Um...
Can you stay on board with us?
I would just, I would feel
more comfortable because
you've been with us for so long.
Well, I understand.
Maybe I can arrange a time
when we can all meet here
in my office, say,
a couple of weeks,
under my supervision.
Okay, great.
Okay.
Hey, come on, sweetie.
Time to go.
Okay, baby.
(upbeat drum music)
[Pam] Anything else
you need, Kate?
No, thank you.
And thank you so much for all
of your help with Logan.
Has he eaten at all yet?
No.
No, no, no.
Shut up, shut up, shut up!
What's wrong, sweetie?
I'll kill you.
I'll kill you!
I'll kill you.
(dramatic music)
[Jill] Shelby and Sam
are gettin' so big.
They're eating so much.
Travis and I can't believe it.
Do they like Chicago?
[Jill] I think so.
They have lots of friends here.
And they love the snow.
It's still an
exciting, new thing.
Hmm.
[Jill] Things been any
better between you and Ken?
Ah, intimately?
No.
[Jill] No sex at all?
Okay, I don't really
want to talk about it.
[Jill] Did he say why?
Yeah, see, that's still
talking about it.
[Jill] Sounds like his father.
Oh, you're kidding, right?
'Cause Forest will
sleep with anything.
[Jill] How are the kids?
Well, Emma is beautiful.
And so is Logan.
You know, when he's
not acting up.
Kind of just turns
into another person.
It's a little scary.
[Jill] You should try
to find his parents.
Yeah, then what?
You know, what if I
don't want to know?
[Jill] Listen to me, there's
only one way to find out.
Besides, knowing a
child's health history
is really important.
I know.
[Jill] What does
Ken say about it?
He says don't worry about it.
You know, that his family's
gonna take care of it.
[Jill] Does that make
any sense to you?
Kate, you owe this to
yourself and your kids.
You owe it to that little boy.
He's little now.
What are you going to do
when Logan is a teenager?
You're not gettin'
any help from Ken.
Take it into your own hands.
Remember what Daddy
always used to say.
[Kate] Hmm.
[Kate and Jill] Always
finish what you started.
Thanks, Jill.
I miss you.
[Jill] I miss you, too.
Love you.
(solemn music)
(door clicking)
[Ken] Nice to see you, Dad.
What brings you here?
I had hoped we could have a
small meeting with Kate.
I wanted to have a
moment with you, too,
regarding Logan.
If it's not too
much of a bother.
(solemn music)
Forest, it's so nice
of you to stop by.
I'm sorry, Ken didn't
tell me you were coming.
Well, I was in the
neighborhood and I
thought I'd drop in and
discuss a few things
regarding my grandson.
I hope you don't mind.
The place looks nice.
I'm glad that Pam is
working out over here.
Yeah, no, thank you so much.
It's nice to have an
extra set of hands,
especially with Logan.
My pleasure, my pleasure.
You know, Kate, I've
been thinking about
my grandson's future.
School and the like, you know.
It's never too early to
think about those things,
and we really need to find
the right college for him.
How's that sound?
That sounds great.
Great, although he's only five.
You know, so the only
thing he's really
worried about right
now is what bike
we're gonna get him.
(laughing)
Well, I think you can
have that luxury
to feel that, but
as I was saying,
I think it's best
to set it up early.
You know how competitive
things can be these days.
And that boy is a Burnett, now.
Yes, yes, no, we
understand that for sure.
Mmm.
Oh, ah, these behavior issues.
Have they been resolved?
We're working on it.
There's been a lot
of back and forth.
The doctors are putting him
through a lot of tests.
They can't quite put
their finger on it yet.
Well, there's nothing
wrong with that boy.
Not a thing.
If anything Maureen or I can do,
we're right there for him.
That child is an
investment in our future.
You can see that can't you?
Okay, Dad, that's
enough, please.
I'm just trying
to help, Kenneth.
[Pam] Okey dokey.
There we go.
He's getting worse, isn't he?
Well, I don't mean to alarm
you, but this just...
It's okay, we're way past that.
Bugs! Bugs!
(stomping) (dramatic music)
[Kate] Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa!
What is it, bud?
Bugs!
No, no, no, sweetie.
There aren't any bugs here.
Bugs!
Sweetie, there aren't
any bugs here.
Okay, uh, Logan, Logan?
Stop.
Logan, let me check.
Let me check.
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Lookin', lookin',
there aren't any bug.
[Logan] Bugs!
[Kate] Bugs, Logan.
Please stop.
Bugs!
What, what is it?
It's urine.
I don't like you.
(dramatic music)
Logan, please settle down.
I'm so sorry.
I'm fine.
I'm, I'm, I'm fine.
But look, Kate.
You are in over your head.
I know.
Now what are they doing?
What the doctors...
I know, I know, I'm
asking for help.
They said they're going
over all the tests.
I don't mean to
sound insensitive,
and I know this is hard,
but I don't think that
you can help him.
(Logan screaming in background)
Not here.
[Logan] Bugs!
I don't know what to do.
I'm sorry.
We'll keep him here under
observation for a week.
Don't worry.
I know that it seems...
What's wrong with him, Doctor?
What do you know about
Logan's birth mother?
What about? Not much.
Nothing really.
Why?
It would be very helpful
to know if there's
any significant history
of mental illness
or drug abuse with Logan's
biological mother
or father's family.
No, no, we don't know.
What about Logan?
Mr. Burnett, your grandson
is in good hands here.
You're starting to sound
like a politician.
[Forest] Doctor.
I'm sorry.
Thank you.
Call me every day.
I'll be around.
Between you and I,
there's absolutely no way
that the information
about Logan's birth mother
isn't readily available,
especially to a family
of your stature.
It's important that
we know more about.
Logan's medical history.
She's right, Kate.
I understand.
I'll be in touch.
Okay, thank you.
I'm sorry, Maureen.
I meant to call you.
It's been really busy.
What, what are you
doing here again?
I'm here to help you.
Really?
Well, don't look so surprised.
I'm sorry, I didn't
mean it like that.
Shoot.
Oh.
- Honey, I got it.
- No, it's...
[Maureen] I got it.
Sorry.
No, Kate, it's me who's sorry.
It's quiet.
Without Logan, you mean?
No, that's not what I mean.
You deserve a medal for
looking after that child.
He's my son.
He's a Burnett, that's for sure.
What do you mean?
(laughing)
Nothing, nothing.
I'm just saying, that's all.
Mmm, we have an event
tonight for the election.
Some of the donors
are sponsoring
another fricking
barbecue dinner.
Excuse my French.
Just put on a smile. (Chuckles)
Mmm, I should be going.
Are you all right?
Thank you.
For what?
Being nice to me.
(laughing)
Don't tell anyone.
(soft piano music)
Oh, hi.
Hi.
I thought you were gonna
be at the campaign office.
So the doctor thinks
we should look into
getting medical histories
for Logan's birth parents.
Not now, Kate.
This is our son.
Don't you think it's
weird that we don't
have access to anything?
Kate, I said not now.
Have you been drinking?
Lay off me.
I mean, it's three
in the afternoon.
(footsteps clomping)
(sighing)
(soft piano music)
(keyboard clicking)
(soft instrumental music)
[Emily] Hey, it's Emily.
Just leave a message.
(long tone beeping)
Uh, hi Emily.
You don't know who this is.
My name is Katherine Burnett
and my husband and I
adopted your son Logan
and he's having some issues.
So I was hoping I could ask you
a couple of questions maybe,
if you wouldn't mind.
Okay, I hope to
hear from you soon.
Please.
Thank you.
Go ahead.
Your son suffers from
schizoaffective disorder.
What?
What the hell does that mean?
Dad, please.
No, just, what does
that mean for us?
Periods of mania and depression,
as well as hallucinations
and delusions.
In short, Logan sees
things that aren't there.
Lizards and bugs
and just recently
a man called Owen
who's after him.
It's not uncommon to develop
it at an earlier age,
but with Logan, it's
augmented by periods
of extreme violence.
Oh come on, he's just a kid.
Kid or not, Logan
acts without remorse.
So what are you
gonna do for him?
Well, we could keep him sedated,
but the truth is he's
only gonna get worse.
I don't want to hear anymore.
Kate, I know this is hard.
This is crazy.
Logan poses a very real
physical danger to
himself and others.
I know this might be
very hard to hear,
but I suggest that you
hospitalize Logan.
I don't know what the hell
you're talking about,
but we're not lockin' that
boy up in an institution.
No.
You got nothin' to say here?
This is horse crap.
I am sorry.
I am so very sorry.
(birds chirping)
Hi, baby.
Cool.
You like that?
Ooh, look at those.
Yeah, that's so cool.
Momma?
Yes?
Is Logan gonna be okay?
Of course.
Why is everyone sad?
He's gonna be fine.
Where's Daddy?
Do you wanna go watch some TV?
Yeah?
Can I pick the show?
You can totally pick the show.
(Giggling)
(light playful music)
Hi, sweetie.
Wanna watch TV with us?
What's behind your back, bud?
(soft dramatic music)
What do you have, bud?
What do you have
behind your back?
(scissors swishing) (screaming)
Logan, no!
Give me the scissors.
Give me the scissors.
The scissors now.
Give it, Logan!
Ken!
Let me see, come on, let me see.
[Ken] What is going on?
[Kate] I don't know, I don't
know, he just came out here.
Bang, bang!
[Kate] Can you come?
[Ken] Wait, Logan!
Come back here!
Logan, get back here!
[Logan] I'll kill
you, I'll kill you!
No!
(car screeching)
Logan, no!
(soft solemn music)
I tried.
We tried to get back to living.
I thought Ken and I
would be closer.
Lean on each other.
I was wrong.
How could they let this happen?
How?
Damn it.
(crying)
(phone buzzing)
Hello?
[Man] Mrs. Burnett?
This is she.
Who is this?
[Man] Trevor.
Trevor Searcy.
I'm sorry, who is this?
Trevor Searcy.
We, uh...
We read about...
Oh my God.
I'm so glad you called.
Glad? I'm not.
My wife and I, we read about
Logan in the paper.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
The boy.
That's why we called.
Can we meet?
In person?
There ah, there's just, there's
a lot that I need to know.
[Trevor] What difference
would that make?
Maybe nothing.
Maybe we can help each other.
[Trevor] Still don't
know what difference it
would make, but ah,
my wife.
Okay.
Yeah, okay.
Tell me where to be.
It's gonna be okay.
Hey.
All right, stop it.
(bright instrumental music)
Once the dying leaves
lay upon the ground
I start to believe
Tides begin to turn
As the season
breathes a life in me
We fool the light
Move again
See what you'll find
Somebody hopes
Live again
Somebody dies
Yeah
Can you feel
Feel that we are autumn bound
Can you feel
Things are gonna turn around
Take the leap
Live with your
feet on the ground
Oh yeah, summer is gone
Time to be moving on
(buzzer buzzing)
[Trevor] Kate?
Hi.
Come on in.
This is my wife Dotty.
Hi.
Nice to meet you.
Can I get you some sweet tea?
Sure, thank you.
Have a seat.
Thank you, you're so sweet.
Okay, so I was hoping we
could talk about Emily.
Emily?
Is she here?
No, she's not.
She's gone.
But we, ah...
We don't know where she is.
Really?
That's what she said.
So when I called
her cellphone...
She left it, we keep it.
[Kate] But why wouldn't
she take it with her?
What do you care, Mrs. Burnett?
Why are you askin' that?
We are parents, damn it.
She's our daughter.
You're a mother,
what would you do?
She disappears for
long period of time.
We hoped that she may
call the damn thing,
so we keep it, okay?
That's it?
Well...
We read about Logan and um...
And we got that voicemail
message from you.
Yeah.
And then we decided
we should call you.
And find out what
the hell happened.
Tell me what happened!
(fist banging)
Shh.
Well, Logan had severe
behavioral issues.
Violent and delusions.
He was seeing things
that weren't there.
I, it was scary.
I didn't...
The doctor told us to see
if we could find out
anything about his
biological family.
That's why I called Emily
because I was hoping
maybe she could
tell me something.
Is there something?
Emily had a drug problem
for a long time.
While she was pregnant she
was battling with heroin.
We tried to help when
the devil got his arms
wrapped around you.
The doctor said it was possible
that the infant, well...
Look, all I know is my
grandchild is dead.
Can you please tell
us what happened?
My husband nev,
Ken.
Never told me anything about
the adoption process.
Ken, huh?
Well, look.
All we know, we thought she
was back on that stuff
when she decided to put
the kid up for adoption.
Best for the child, she said.
Then she just took off.
We don't know where.
So the Burnetts,
where do they...
Listen, it was kind of
the Burnetts to come in
and to take care and to adopt.
It was kind of them.
And the father?
Do you know where he is?
I don't know.
She never told us.
We don't know who,
what, or where.
But not a name or anything?
What did we say?
We had no options.
We were not in the position
to take care of a child.
They've been good to us over
the years, the Burnetts.
Givin' Emily work
despite her issues.
So Emily worked for them?
Yes, why?
For several years.
I never liked that man.
Squirrely-eyed piece of sh...
Yeah.
I'm sorry I don't have
more answers for you.
The Burnetts.
They can help you.
The Burnetts can help me?
Maybe.
I'm a Burnett.
But you're not like them.
I can tell.
[Maureen] Nice of
you to come, Kate.
[Kate] Don't ask surprised.
[Maureen] Touche.
I wanted to stop by and
see how you were doing.
See how Forest is doing.
Forest is torn up.
He really did love that child.
Yeah, I'll bet.
Need to ask you a favor.
His bank accounts, do you
have access to those?
What do you mean?
I need to find out a few things.
That is none of your business.
This is important.
Did you hear what I said?
And what in God's name
do you need to know?
She worked for you guys
from time to time, right?
I was hoping you could
help me figure out
where she comes into play.
Maybe you should go home now.
Soon.
Here's some advice.
You are walking into
a world that you
know nothing about.
Listen to yourself.
That doesn't even make sense.
Why can't you stand up for
yourself for once, Maureen?
I need your help.
You don't always have
to look the other way.
Well, that is a
fine speech, Kate.
But we, you and I,
we both do it.
You just don't know it yet.
(laughing)
It's called survival.
And you'll get there.
I can't even remember when
it got its hooks in me.
Yeah, and when does that end?
End?
It never ends.
Welcome to my hell.
Emily Searcy.
Help me.
Maybe we can fix all of this.
I can't do it without you.
Please help me figure out
what happened to my son.
Maybe you should go now.
Forget today.
No!
No.
Wait here for me.
(soft instrumental music)
Sorry.
Keep it.
You didn't get this from me.
Payments to the McKibbon Realty
corporate apartment complex
just outside Clarksdale.
Monthly.
He didn't think I
looked at the payments,
didn't know about the
women, all of it.
You know what you have
that I never had?
What?
A choice
to walk away.
(keyboard clicking)
(upbeat funk music)
Okay, so she likes to
read, which is fine,
but only like half an
hour if that's okay.
Yes, I know, Mrs. Burnett.
And you have my
cellphone so you can
call me if you need anything?
Yes.
Anything else?
Don't worry, Emma
and I will be fine.
We'll see you later tonight.
Okay.
Oh, ah...
No, okay, okay.
I got in my car
I got stopped by
the police, yeah
Lord knows I didn't get far
I had to pay that fine, man
Nothing I could say or do
The clock is ticking
Just another day
for me and you
A lot of pressure, baby
A lot of pressure building up
(beeping)
Gotta make that money
Before it's too late
(beeping) (ringing)
[Emily] Who is it?
Hi, um...
This is a friend
of Forest Burnett.
[Emily] A friend of Forest?
Isn't he coming?
Yes, no, well he wanted to,
but he couldn't, so he
sent me to check in on you
and bring you some stuff.
(buzzer buzzing)
(knocking)
Emily?
Did you bring groceries?
Usually he sends someone
with groceries.
No, uh, I'm just here to um,
check on ya.
Who are you?
Do I know you?
No.
You said you're a
friend of Forest's?
Yeah.
He just wanted me to stop by
and see how you're feeling.
I'll be well enough
to go home soon,
to be with my son.
He told me so.
Logan, right?
He's your son?
Yeah.
Do you know him?
You should sit.
It's okay, just sit down.
He's my little angel.
Isn't he handsome? (Chuckles)
[Kate] Very.
He looks just like his father.
Do you know Forest?
We'll be married soon.
As soon as he divorces
that cow Maureen.
Oh, do you know her?
Dark cloud.
It's her fault.
Fricking bitch Maureen.
All of it.
She should just die!
You know, I don't understand
why it's so hard for her!
She should just go away!
Yeah, you know what?
[Emily] It would
be so much easier.
I think I'm done here.
Wait, is something wrong?
No, no, no, no, no.
How is my little boy?
Are they treating him all right?
Everything is fine.
I saw him a little while
ago from a distance.
He was at the park
with Maureen and Forest.
But he looked happy, right?
Yeah.
Hmm.
(crying)
(soft dramatic music)
(crying)
[Rocco] Ken, you
have to tell her.
I don't know.
All I can think about is...
I know.
I know, Logan.
I failed.
What have I done?
No, you've done a lot.
Don't do that to yourself.
Enough, okay?
[Rocco] None of it matters
anymore, don't you see?
What do you mean?
I love you.
I love you.
Leave her.
Be with me.
I'd lose everything.
I mean, don't you understand?
I'd be ruined.
I mean, is that what you want?
No, of course not.
You know I don't want that.
I can't.
[Rocco] Why?
(door clicking)
Hi.
[Ken] Hi.
Keep your voice down, okay?
Emma's sleeping.
How was Atlanta?
Uh, good.
Closed the Hendrick account.
What's up, Kate?
What's bothering you?
I don't think you
were in Atlanta.
Then you know something I don't.
Is there something
you want to tell me?
What are you talking about?
Keep your voice down.
It's a question.
Are you having an
affair with the man
from Logan's wake?
I am so sick of you and
your frickin' family.
Say something to me, please!
What am I supposed to do?
What am I supposed to
do about our marriage?
I'm gonna tell your family.
Tell them what?
All of it.
About you, about our marriage,
about your friend in Atlanta.
Everything.
They already know.
What?
Why do you think they
had me marry you?
You're the perfect wife,
the perfect cover
for their freakin'
failure of a son.
You think I want
to live like this?
All you had to do was look
pretty and have a son.
But you failed!
Shut up.
You fouled up the one
thing that you had to do,
the one thing.
And Logan?
What about him?
You knew.
You knew and you still
let me adopt him.
My father's bastard son?
Yeah, he's your brother.
Oh my God, I'm gonna
be sick to my stomach.
You played father
to your brother.
I can't do this anymore.
I want a divorce.
My father will never allow it.
Oh, you...
Forget your father.
He's going to jail anyway.
Come on, Kate, don't
be stupid, okay?
My family knows every
judge in this county.
It doesn't matter what you know.
It dies here, tonight.
But she was 16 years old.
Who? Emily Searcy?
She left a long time ago.
No she didn't.
I saw her myself.
Yeah, you think she's
gonna help you?
Or her parents?
We own them.
You sold your soul, too.
It was never mine to begin with.
(soft instrumental music)
(door clicking)
(car engine starting)
Dad, she knows.
We need to talk.
(door creaking)
Okay.
This is just for a
little while, okay?
This side's mine.
Okay.
I took Emma.
The only thing the Burnett
family cared about,
and we moved.
Told Ken I would be
filing for divorce,
and the Burnetts started
doing their spin.
No lawyer would touch me.
Oh!
Shoot.
Sorry.
(door bells jingling)
Kate?
No.
Please, Kate.
All right, this is
no state for you
and Emma to be living in.
(laughing)
You can call.
You don't understand.
My father's running for office.
And I'm his son, okay?
And technically
you're still my wife.
Why don't we just
keep up appearances?
Is that supposed to be a joke?
We can make a deal.
You can live in another
section of the house.
Okay, you and Emma will
be very comfortable.
Just come home.
Okay.
You need to leave now.
You won't win.
My father won't allow it.
He'll take Emma away from you.
Yeah.
My father always wins.
I could help you now,
but if it gets too
late and goes too far,
I can't help you at all.
Think about it.
(soft instrumental music)
(phone ringtone music)
Hello?
[Man] Hi, is this Kate Burnett?
It is.
Who is this?
[Man] My name is Jax Harper.
I'm a journalist with
the Clarksdale Times.
How did you get my number?
[Jax] I have my sources.
Mrs. Burnett, there's
rumors going 'round
about you and your husband
and I would love to sit down
and discuss those rumors.
Yeah, you know what?
I don't think I
really want to...
[Jax] Mrs. Burnett,
I think I might be
able to help you.
How?
(patrons murmuring)
Ms. Burnett?
Nice to meet you, Mrs. Burnett.
Please have a seat.
Okay, but don't call me that.
I hate that name.
It's Kate.
So what's the rumor that
you heard about me?
That you and your
husband are separated,
maybe because of a certain
lifestyle choice.
And that he won't
give you a divorce.
What do you want, Mr. Harper?
Please, call me Jax.
Okay.
What do you want, Jax?
You need an ally, someone
to fight the Burnetts.
They think they own this town.
You give me an exclusive,
I'll make you front
page material.
Then he can't touch you.
And what's in it for you?
If it bleeds, it leads.
I am a journalist, right?
Yeah.
Kate.
You can't do this alone.
They have everyone
in their pockets.
I don't give a damn,
but nobody outruns bad press.
It's your only shot.
Old Man Burnett's
running for reelection.
The time to hit him is now.
I'll think about it.
You can finally be free.
Free to live your own life.
Call me.
Hey, munchkin.
Hop on up.
Uh, you're gettin' so big.
How are you doin'?
I'm fine.
I just miss Logan.
I do, too.
How was school?
It was fine.
Yeah?
What's that?
What?
Your necklace.
Grandpa gave it to me.
Isn't it pretty?
When did you see Grandpa?
Emma?
Hey, it's okay.
When did you see Grandpa?
He came by school.
(banging)
Forest!
Forest!
Forest, get out here right now!
(banging) (doorbell ringing)
Kate? Honey, what?
Where is he?
Forest, get out here!
Hey, hey, what's
all the shouting?
What's wrong?
I don't want you to see
my daughter again.
What do you mean?
What is this?
What is this?
I gave that to Emma.
It's a gift from
her grandfather.
You are not allowed
to see her again!
I went to see my granddaughter.
I don't get to see her...
No, you do not!
You are not allowed to
see my daughter again!
Who the hell do you think
you're talkin' to, huh?
You think I give a
damn what you want?
Emma is a Burnett.
Whether you like it or not.
I'm gonna say this
one more time.
You stay away from her!
You get off my porch
before I lose my manners.
You understand me?
You're embarrassing
yourself, girl!
(necklace clinking)
(footsteps clomping)
Hi.
Thank you for coming so late.
I just got off work.
I was expecting
to hear from you.
Coffee?
Oh, thank you.
Mmm-hmm.
Hmm.
I don't really know
where to start.
Start from the beginning.
Okay, well, thanks for the ride.
Of course.
You did great tonight.
Really.
Got a lot of really good stuff.
You think we have a chance?
Chance?
This article,
I would not want to be him.
Or his robot son
for that matter.
But...
[Kate] But?
Well, birth certificate
would help.
For Logan.
Hard evidence.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I'm sure the
Burnett's have that.
What about Emily?
She hold onto
anything like that?
I don't know.
She's not really
all there, though.
What's there to lose?
I'll do my best.
Have a good night.
You, too.
Hi, can I put this down here?
Okay, okay.
Um, I'm hungry.
What did you bring?
Peanut butter sandwich?
Sure.
Okay.
So, I was hoping we could
talk about your boy.
Isn't he handsome?
He has his daddy's
eyes, you know?
I'll bet you have
lots of stuff of his.
Yeah.
Sure, his daddy gives me stuff.
He's so smart.
Such a smart little
boy, you know?
I don't even mind.
I just...
Actually I do mind being
so alone, you know?
Yeah.
But it's for the best.
That's what Forest says,
because of my condition.
Anyways, sometimes I,
I make copies of things
before he takes them back
so that I can look
at them anytime.
I just really miss
him, you know?
Sure.
Understandable.
I'm sure you have lots of
pictures like from the hospital
when he was born.
I'd love to see 'em.
Why would you want that?
He told me not to give
anything to anybody.
Oh, no, no, no, no.
That's not...
Get out!
I just wanted to...
No, get the freak out.
That's, I'm...
No, you want to
take my baby away!
You're not gonna do it!
I'll kill you!
You need to go!
Sit down, sit down!
I don't want to take your child.
I have to do something.
(dramatic music)
[Emily's Voice] I
make copies of things
before he gives them back to me.
He told me not to give
anything to anybody.
Get out.
You want to take my baby away?
You're not gonna do it!
I'll kill you!
Get out!
(dramatic music)
Get out!
(soft dramatic music)
Jax, I got it.
I got it.
(car engine starting)
(birds chirping)
You said you would
take care of this.
Now what?
Forest, you destroyed
our family.
You.
You and you.
I told both of you.
What'd I say?
Stay away from that girl.
What did you tell her?
You did this.
Me?
The only mistake I
made was to allow,
to close my eyes to all of this.
To think that some day
it would all end.
God, I worked so
hard for so long.
You can't even control
your own God damn wife.
And I told you to stay
away from your friend.
Dad, I couldn't be
exactly who you wanted.
Mom and I...
You're pathetic!
You know that?
You're a poor excuse for a son
and for a Burnett.
You know, stop it, okay?
I've had enough of you!
Forest.
Forest!
I have listened
and done everything
you asked me to do
our entire lives.
Please,
just this once,
listen to me now.
What?
Embrace it.
Embrace it?
What does that mean?
Our son, Ken.
Let him live his life publicly.
And we will put all our
support behind him.
You mean embrace that
I have a gay son?
Yes.
Think about it.
All those speeches
you served up,
equal rights for all.
Start with our son.
And just like you said,
save everything that we
have worked so hard for
our entire lives.
Huh.
[Ken] Dad, look at me.
Huh?
I know I can't be the
son you want me to be
and I'm fine with that.
But I still want this life.
And that means I want
you to win, okay?
And this can help.
The campaign, the Burnetts.
Well, I don't know.
What about Logan?
Maureen, this could ruin me.
We could lose everything.
(soft instrumental music)
I can't thank you
enough for everything.
No, thank you.
Got me back where I belong.
Front page.
Get out of here.
Got some really good
offers coming in, so.
Well, you helped me get
my life back together,
so even trade.
It was my pleasure.
Good evening, everyone.
It's a beautiful night
here in Clarksdale.
But who am I kidding?
Every night here in
Clarksdale is beautiful.
(laughing)
Ah.
Yes, well.
For the last three years
you have entrusted
this city to my mayorship.
And I'm here tonight to
ask you for your support
and to give me the honor
of another four years
of service to you.
[Jax] Take care of yourself.
You, too.
Now if there's one thing
I know about Clarksdale,
it's that we honor
our traditions.
We honor time-trusted
Christian ideals of family.
I understand and I
have understood
those traditions and I've
tried to honor them.
I also understand the
value of progress.
That we know that sometimes
we have to leave
certain things behind
in order to move forward.
Now I have made many mistakes.
Many.
But I think it is most important
to recognize those mistakes
and learn from them.
Now, I love my son, Kenneth.
I'm very proud of him
and of all of his
accomplishments.
And I'm proud of him
for being who he is.
And so it is with
great pride that I
share with you that
my son Kenneth's gay.
And I want him to know
that finding happiness
is his right.
That small actions
can be like pebbles
being thrown into a still lake,
causing ripples of hope
to cascade outwards
and change the world.
And so I give you my action.
And I ask that my wife,
my beautiful wife Maureen
and my son Kenneth stand by me
as we ask you to join us
in bringing Clarksdale
into the future.
We thank you.
God bless you.
And God bless this
wonderful city.
(soft instrumental music)
Mom!
I'm running out of room
for all of my books.
Uh-oh.
Well, um, leave 'em there
and we'll get you new ones.
Right?
They have books
in Chicago, yeah?
Yeah, they sure do.
[Emma] But I want my books.
Oh, okay.
Well, how about you
go back inside
and I will help you try
and fit 'em all in there.
We'll see how that goes.
(laughing)
Kate, hey.
Hey.
Yeah.
[Jill] Kate.
Yeah.
You're doing the right thing.
You think so?
Yeah, I think so.
Hmm.
(soft instrumental music)
As for Forest, well, he went
on to win the election,
just as planned, I guess.
And Ken, he and Rocco lived
together for a few years.
Then Rocco moved to New
York and Ken stayed behind.
Guess the leash Forest had
just wasn't long enough.
(laughing)
Here we go.
Woo-hoo, Chicago!
Here we come!
[Kate] Losing everything
wasn't the problem.
That can be the
cost of redemption.
But who I was, my identity,
where did it go?
It's like looking at a
broken mirror, shattered.
Parts of you all over
the floor staring back.
There's still time for
me to pick the pieces up
and glue them back together.
I have my daughter, my life,
and now my soul.
I know who I am again.
(inspiring instrumental music)
I wish I could tell you
How I feel
But I don't want to open scars
That took so long to heal
I wish I could get you
In a crowded room
Tell everyone
What you put me through
But I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
Away from you
Trapped inside this mind
I'm caught between the rocks
Wishing to claim back
To my life on top
I'd push you down your hill
Just to break your will
And break your every fall
And keep you as my all
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
To get away from you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
(upbeat rock music)
You always left
me wantin' more
Like I waited for a break
Or crashin' on heaven's floor
You said you cared
But never opened up the door
I'm lying here on the ground
Staring up at the stars
And dreamin' of a better round
I would do things differently
So get me on the soonest train
'Cause no matter what it costs
Well I'm gonna find a way
I'm goin' back there again
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
Away from you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To get away from you
I can't get away
I'm at the center of the earth
And I can't dig deep enough
To forget about you
(soft piano music)
