- Autocom is the world's largest supplier of
automation software for municipal systems.
And as such, security precautions are going to be
an extremely important part of your job here.
Here in the mainframe center is
the heart and soul of Autocom.
If you find yourself working here,
be aware that the room is equipped with
the Hay-Lon fire extinguishing system.
Now, the Hay-Lon extinguishes the fire
by sucking all the oxygen out of the room.
So if the system should activate for any reason,
you're gonna wanna get out as soon as possible.
Follow me.
All righty, our next stop is 18 floors up
where all the bigwigs live.
(tense music) (windchimes twinkling)
(elevator dinging) Okay, ladies and gentlemen.
Here we are at the penthouse. - Hey Cathy, go right in.
- Hey Keely, we'll be just a second.
Home to our executive offices.
Now, you may find yourself up here from time to time-
- Look, there he is.
Mr. Weston, excuse me.
I just want to say it is an honor to be working with you.
I have some great ideas in the area of compression.
- Oh, email it to me.
- Oh, okay, I just wanted to tell you.
- Why don't you tell it to this? It's a webcam.
- It's not customary to address Mr. Weston directly.
Maybe we could all keep that in mind in the future.
All right, if we keep walking.
- [Russ's Computer] Improving your people skills?
- Webcams maximize efficiency.
He'll learn the rules.
- [Russ's Computer] Machines safer than people, eh Brad?
(Brad mumbling) (chair motor whirring)
I saw that.
- Why is it that everything that comes out of that box
sounds so wise?
- [Russ's Computer] This model is top of the line.
- I'm getting one.
- Excuse me gentlemen, sorry to interrupt,
but we just found this out then.
- Found what out?
- You both need to see this.
(TV remote clicking)
- [Newscaster] Officials are at a loss to explain
how such a catastrophic disaster could have happened
at the state-of-the-art, tightly-controlled facility.
The death toll has now risen to nearly 200.
(suspenseful music)
We've just learned there may be a local connection
to the disaster in the Ukraine.
The nuclear plant recently had been automated by Autocom.
Autocom, headquartered here in Del Vista,
manufactures a software that automates
most of our public works and utility systems.
Obviously, this raises grave safety concerns.
We will continue to cover this breaking story
throughout the day.
Live in Del Vista, I'm Miriam Davis reporting.
- The phone lines are jammed, everyone wants our response.
They wanna talk to you, Brad.
- We have to schedule a meeting right away.
- [Russ's Computer] A face-to-face one.
- Yes.
- I'm on it.
(keys clacking)
- [Russ's Computer] I will check to see
if it was your software.
- Software doesn't make mistakes, Russ. People do.
(upbeat alt rock music)
(kids shouting playfully)
- Hey, hey, scooter boy.
(Dylan thudding) (Dylan grunting)
That was pretty clever, geek.
- I was hoping you'd appreciate the irony.
- So, um, what do you think you are, huh?
Robin Hood, prince of computer dweebs?
(sidekick bully chuckling)
- Well, you know what they say.
Winners never cheat and cheaters never win.
- Look, unlike your sorry self, some of us have lives, okay?
We don't have time to study
all those stupid names and dates.
- I can tell.
- You know, everything was set for us.
We were gonna sail through that class with our As
and we'd have plenty of time to practice.
And then you had to go hacking into the school system
and erase all our grades.
Guess what?
Now we have to take that test again, under supervision.
Hey, hey, don't think that I won't thrash you
just because your daddy is Mr. Autocom,
because he's just a snot-nose computer geek like you.
- Well, unfortunately, we can't all have
plumbing geniuses as fathers, now can we?
(car engine whirring)
- [Alex] Hey, Dylan!
Hurry up, we're late.
Tell your little friends you'll see them later.
(Dylan sighing)
- Saved by mommy.
(trash clinking)
(trash crinkling)
- Is there a connection between
those big guys about to pulverize you
and the phone call I got today?
So how long this time?
- Two weeks suspension.
- Okay, Dylan, I'm withholding your driver's license
for three more months.
- Another three months?
(Dylan grunting angrily)
- You promised you'd stop hacking.
The school is losing its patience, and so am I.
You do realize this affects my job too?
How do you think it looks for
a professor of cyber ethics to have her son
hacking into the school's computers destroying records?
- Those jocks were cheating.
I was writing a wrong.
I am the son of an ethicist.
- You weren't being ethical.
You were being a vigilante.
- So, what, Robin Hood was unethical?
- Robin Hood wasn't trying to get into a good college.
- We'd better go.
I'm overdue for some quality time with Dad.
(video game beeping)
(engine rumbling)
(suspenseful, urgent music)
(reporters chattering)
- [Alex] What's going on?
- Maybe a disgruntled engineer went postal.
Maybe it was Dad.
Oh, Alex is not amused.
- Dylan is not amusing.
- Why do I have to keep coming here?
He never has anything to say to me.
- Why don't you talk about
the Autocom test software we installed at home?
(Dylan scoffing)
I'll see you tonight.
- Don't worry, I won't be long.
(wistful music)
(news crews bustling)
(tense music)
- Hey! Dylan! - Hey man, how you doin'?
- Haven't seen you in awhile. - I've been busy.
Say, what's with all the news guys outside?
- It's a bad wind blowin'.
Listen, before you go up, you know I gotta ask.
(Dylan sighing)
- Are you in possession of any software
whose origin is unknown to you
and could compromise security of Autocom?
- No.
- Good. Then you can go up.
(workers chattering loudly)
- You'll have to call back another time.
(elevator dinging)
- [Brad] Okay Scott, I want you to take the team
and examine the hardware,
make sure it hasn't been tampered with.
(phone ringing) Max, I wanna know when that software
went out to the Ukraine, all right?
Megan, I wanna find out every single company
that might have installed that version, all right?
Russ's office in 30 minutes. 10 minutes!
(workers chattering busily)
- Hey.
The name's Dylan.
Your ex-wife gave birth to me 16 years ago.
(Brad mumbling) (Brad sighing)
- It's today, isn't it?
(Brad sighing frustratedly)
I'm sorry Dylan, I'm in the middle of
something that's pretty serious right now.
How about if you go to a movie with Andrew?
Andrew, could you take Dylan?
- That's okay, I got some homework I should do.
I'll see you later.
- You need some money?
I can give you some money here.
Dylan, listen, tell your mom next week will be better, okay?
I'll make it up to you.
I called the crew for a meeting. Anything yet?
- [Russ's Computer] To early to tell.
Our software at the nuclear plant is clean.
Was that Dylan's voice I heard?
- Yes. I had to send him home.
- [Russ's Computer] At least you have an excuse this time.
- I wanna be with him more, Russ.
It's just never the right time
and it just gets harder and harder to talk to him.
(ominous music)
(poignant music)
- [Russ's Computer] A wise person once said,
"Say it and email it."
Pour your heart out.
Do it till you get it right, then send it to him.
- Come on, Russ.
- [Russ's Computer] Talk to him however you can.
But don't let him slip away from you. Especially now.
(ominous music)
(hand knocking)
(latch clanking)
- You gonna let me in or what?
- Sure buddy.
- Hey, your second flight paranoid cam needs readjusting.
So what are you working on?
- I just broke into the Zega mainframe.
Gonna mess with their codes.
(Elliot chuckling) It's gonna be great.
It's gonna take a month to straighten it out.
- What are you picking on video games for?
I like 'em.
- It's the computers, man.
We're losing our humanity.
- I see you got a couple lying around here.
- Necessary evil, buddy.
- So, uh, breaking into Zega must be a real trick, huh?
(Elliot chuckling) How'd you get past the firewalls?
- Oh, you don't.
Well, you can't come in the front.
They'll see you coming a mile away.
Gotta go in the back door, then it's breeze.
So what's up? You okay?
- Oh, I'm just hunky dory.
- Mom let you get your license yet?
Oh, she found out about Operation Robin Hood.
(Elliot chuckling)
- She didn't relate to the higher objective,
and I'm without wheels for another three months.
- Yeah, she's bustin' on you, huh?
- When she's not busy making the world safe
for a kinder, gentler internet.
Meanwhile, I live in a grass hut
I'm pedaling around on a scooter like Huck Finn.
- Aw, your time will come.
- She still won't take a dime of my dad's money.
At least he should be good for that.
- Yeah. Most of 'em would've stuck it to 'em.
- Nah, she says she's got her reasons.
All I know is I got the richest dad in town
and the crappiest zip code.
- Yeah? Money isn't everything.
- What poor loser coined that phrase?
You knew both my parents back in the dark ages, right?
Was was he always such a bore
and was she always so tightly wound?
- Well, your dad was always ambitious.
Your mom was, well,
your mom was always righteous about being righteous.
Russ was the real long-view man.
- Yeah? And where did you fit in?
(Elliot chuckling faintly)
- I guess I was the dreamer.
Your dad didn't have room for a dreamer in the program.
I always thought the future was artificial intelligence,
not automating a toilet with a computer.
But what did I know?
- What, so you just split?
- Pretty much.
- Yeah, well, I'd rather hang out with you any day.
- You know, I don't think either of your parents
would be too thrilled about you
hanging out at the hacker shack.
- Yeah, I know.
(Elliot laughing)
- So how is your dad, anyway?
Besides being richer than snot?
- How would I know?
He didn't schedule much time for a kid
in his program either.
Sometimes I wish that whole company would just implode.
- You know, don't be too hard on the guy.
You know, he's emotionally disabled.
- Some big brouhaha going on up there today, right?
The guy hardly spoke to me.
- Really? What happened?
- Like he'd tell me.
- Yeah, this'll get his attention.
(mysterious New Age music)
- Oh, that's kinda rad, in a Dad retro kind of way.
- Yeah, it's a song they were always playing
when he started the company.
Gimme your MP3.
This will get him talking.
Get a big reaction out of him.
- You think he'd dig it? - Yeah. He'll dig it.
(ominous music)
- I'm back.
- Hey there, Dylan. - Hey.
- You ready? - Yeah.
- Are you in possession of any software
whose origins are unknown to you
and could compromise the security of Autocom?
- No.
- Go.
- [Megan] Press is still hounding us for statement, Brad.
- [Brad] Hold them off, Megan, till we know more.
- [Russ's Computer] We just confirmed
the Ukrainian anomaly did include our software.
- [Brad] Oh no.
- [Russ's Computer] We've run a diagnostic locally
and all systems seem unaffected.
- [Brad] Okay, we've gotta go back to the source codes.
(photo clinking)
(gentle, wistful music)
(ominous, tense music)
(computer beeping)
- You're back.
- Yeah, I finished my homework early.
- You didn't download anything into my computer, did you?
- No.
- 'Cause I asked you never to touch
any computers in this building.
We can't risk contamination, you understand that?
And especially not today.
- I'm sorry I even came back.
- Dylan, sit down. Please.
Hey Dylan, I'm sorry.
Your dad's had a bad day.
There's this plant in the Ukraine that's near Russia.
- Yeah, I've heard of Russia, Dad.
- Of course you have.
There was an explosion there today.
A lot of people died.
And there's a possibility that our software,
my software was involved.
- Wow. I'm sorry.
- So what are you listening to?
- It's nothing, just a song.
It's kinda weird, but it reminded me of you.
- Oh, thanks.
- Here.
- That's all right.
- C'mon.
(mysterious New Age music)
- I haven't heard this in years.
(Brad chuckling) Where'd you get it?
- I don't know, I just found it.
Kinda dig that whole New Age thing, right?
- Huh?
- You kinda dig that whole New Age thing, right?
(Brad chuckling) - Yeah, I used to.
(Kathy knocking)
- We're heading home, Mr. Weston, if that's okay.
We'll be in early tomorrow.
Bye Dylan.
- Goodnight.
Dylan, I know I need to spend more time with you.
I wanna spend more time with you.
It's, well, it's just that
this company demands so much of my attention.
- The company's not the problem, Dad.
(wiring crackling)
(machinery whirring)
- What now?
(ominous music)
- Hey Dad, you forget to pay the electric bill?
(suspenseful music)
(gentle Muzak music)
(elevator whirring)
(elevator clanking)
- Oh great.
And I was gonna get my roots done tonight.
(electricity buzzing)
- Kenny?
Kenny, it's me, Mr. Weston.
What is going on down there?
- Yeah, everything's jumping around so much,
it's hard to read.
(phone ringing) Yeah?
Oh, okay. Just a minute.
Mr. Weston, there are some people stuck in elevator two.
I'm gonna switch them over to you, okay?
- Yes, do that.
- Hello? Is anyone there?
- Hi Kathy, it's me.
- Brad? So are you calling the fire department?
- We'll get you out of there in just a minute.
You try to stay calm, all right?
- Mm-hmm.
- [Brad] Kenny, I need you to call 911 right away.
- Is this for real?
(suspenseful music)
(computer whirring)
- Kenny, who's doing that?
Are you doing that?
- Not me. - Doing what?
- [Brad] You just hold on there, Kathy.
Oh no, no, this can't be.
(elevator creaking)
(keys clacking rapidly)
Oh no.
No, come on. Come on!
Kathy, hold on.
- Not funny, Brad.
(elevator rumbling)
(dramatic music) (passengers screaming)
(elevator screeching)
(elevator crashing)
(TV static crackling)
- Dad.
(people chattering urgently) (sirens wailing)
(emotional, ominous music)
- It was like the building was alive.
What happened up there, Dad?
Dad?
- I better get you home.
(mysterious New Age music)
- She's upset.
- You just tell her what happened, it'll be okay. Okay?
- You could tell her yourself.
- No, not tonight.
- Then when, Dad?
(gentle sentimental music)
Look, sorry I'm late, okay?
- Where have you been?
- I've been with Dad.
- What was he thinking?
First he can't be bothered with you
and then he keeps you out half the night.
- Alex-
- Don't Alex me.
Why didn't you call me Dylan?
I've been worried sick.
- [Dylan] Haven't you seen the news?
- [Alex] No.
I've been calling all over town trying to find you.
Why?
- It was awful.
- What? What happened?
- [Dylan] It was like Autocom just went haywire, you know?
I mean, the lights started flickering.
(sinister music) (electronics clicking)
- [Alex] What's wrong?
(retro jazz music) (electronics whirring)
(bear roaring) (Alex gasping)
(alarm wailing)
(dog barking)
- Oh, not again.
(electricity buzzing)
(Alex gasping)
- [Alex] Get down!
(glass cracking)
(sparks popping)
(electronics fizzing) (glass shattering)
(suspenseful music)
(modem screeching)
- We gotta get outta here.
(commotion fading)
(dialtone beeping)
(ominous music)
- No, no, Alex, there has to be another explanation.
Software couldn't do that.
What time did this happen?
- [Alex] Just after you left.
It was terrifying.
It was like the house was under attack.
What's going on over there, Brad?
- We don't know yet, Alex, but I want you to stay offline
until we nail it down, all right?
How's Dylan doing?
I'm worried about him.
- Yeah. Yeah, he's okay.
- Good. And you?
- Look, I got a class. I gotta go.
- [Russ's Computer] Camping here again?
You have a house to go to, remember?
- It's spread to Alex's house, Russ.
What's going on?
- [Russ's Computer] I may have found a virus.
- A virus? Here?
- [Russ's Computer] Someone could be unhappy with us.
- Enough to go to this extreme? Who?
- [Russ's Computer] You're kidding, right?
The list is long, my friend.
You need to go feed the wolves out front the scrap.
Brad? (Brad sighing)
(motor whirring)
- So in about 10 minutes or something like that,
he's gonna be coming out.
(news crews murmuring)
(news crews clamoring)
- [Reporter] Mr. Weston, is there a connection between
the occurrences here last night and the Ukrainian disaster?
- We're looking into the origins of both.
Let me say how saddened we are by
the loss of life in both incidents.
- And how safe can your software be
if it's malfunctioning at your own company?
- [Brad] That's a fair question.
But software does not just malfunction.
- Mr. Weston, do you think it's possible
we've turned over too much power to technology?
- No, not at all.
I think the automation of mundane tasks
is what makes it possible for us
to spend time with things that are more important to us.
Computers and softwares are just tools
and it's what we do with these tools that impacts us.
- You've been quoted as saying
"software does not make mistakes, people do."
So are you now saying that
the people who died in your office building
and in the Ukrainian disaster
are responsible for these mistakes?
- No, not necessarily.
- Well then, who is?
- Well, that's why we have teams of experts
working inside around the clock to determine this.
And that's where I should be right now, if you'll excuse me.
- [Reporter] What about Del Vista Public Works?
Your company built the infrastructure
that automates virtually everything in town.
Are we in danger of a similar mistake?
- Our engineers have done thorough tests
on all of our software and none of it is affected.
So everybody can breathe easy, okay?
Thank you very much for your time. Thank you.
(news crews clamoring)
(ominous music)
(computer beeping) (modem screeching)
(woman talking on phone)
(electricity buzzing)
(sparks flickering) (woman yelping)
(fire sparking) (woman screaming)
(electricity squealing)
(sparks popping) (glass shattering)
(bystanders yelling)
(fire roaring)
(flames roaring) (car thudding)
(distant sirens wailing)
(Elliot chuckling)
(Elliot mimicking explosion) (Elliot laughing)
- Bye-bye, Brad.
(computer beeping)
- The mayor is extremely upset, Brad.
The whole town wants answers and we don't have any.
- I wish I had an answer for you, Warren, but I don't.
We're doing everything we can to figure this thing out.
- How could all of Autocom's software fail
at the same time in different places?
- We don't think that our system has failed.
We think that it's been infected by a virus.
- A virus?
Your system was marketed to us as immune to virus.
- Yes, that's right, and up until now it has been.
We have reason to believe that
we're under attack by someone.
- Attack? Who would've reason to attack Autocom?
- You're gonna be kidding.
Competition, personal grudge, nut job,
it could be a hundred different reasons, Warren.
My job is to figure out who and why.
You gotta figure out how to tell the people
that the system is unsafe.
- Yeah, well, what do you suggest?
I tell the whole town to take a vacation
while you try and fix the problem?
- Warren, I am an engineer.
You are the publicist.
- Be advised, Brad.
The mayor's holding you personally responsible.
He wants an explanation and a solution.
- [Russ's Computer] How did it go?
- Don't ask.
Did you find it?
You found it.
- [Russ's Computer] It's not a virus like we've seen before.
This one's a smart one.
- A smart virus?
- [Russ's Computer] We've been looking for the wrong animal.
This is a sneaky little critter.
And while scanning the source codes looking for a trail,
they're pristine, too clean, then bingo.
- It's invisible.
- [Russ's Computer] Not to me.
- You never cease to amaze me.
- [Russ's Computer] That's what all the girls say.
(Brad chuckling lightly) - [Brad] Well, whatever it is,
I want to find it and kill it.
I want to kill it dead.
Have you tried de-worming?
- [Russ's Computer] Ahead of you, sport.
See, I've gotten it to show its face,
but it always slithers back into the shadows.
- [Brad] Look at that.
It's attached itself to a whole new set of programs.
I've never seen anything like this.
Well, at least we know it's someone
and it's not a bug in our software.
The question is, how did it get in here?
- [Russ's Computer] From the inside.
- What do you mean from the inside? Where on the inside?
- [Russ's Computer] Your computer.
(Brad chuckling) - Yeah right.
That's impossible, nobody has access to my computer.
(phone ringing)
- [Dylan] Hello?
- Hey Dylan, it's me.
I need to ask you something.
- Yeah, sure.
- [Brad] There's a virus in the building
that got in from the inside,
and we think it's behind all these problems.
- Whoa, that's intense.
- Yeah.
- [Dylan] Who do you think did it?
- You didn't download anything into my terminal, did you?
- Me?
- I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm just asking.
- I wouldn't do that, Dad.
- Dylan, please think very carefully
and please be honest with me.
Are you telling me the truth?
- Why is everything I do under suspicion with you?
- I take that to be a no. Thank you, Dylan.
(ominous music)
Just when you think you got it all under control.
- [Russ's Computer] You don't control people, Brad.
You communicate with them.
Look, this gets interesting.
At first, the virus did what it was programmed to do,
seek out operations and disrupt them.
But when it got to the elevator, it took its own initiative
to override the safety system so that it failed.
- You mean it wasn't programmed to do that?
- [Russ's Computer] No, it made up its own mind
to kill those people in the elevator.
- What do you mean "its own mind"?
A virus doesn't have innate intelligence.
- [Russ's Computer] Maybe this one is gifted.
(ominous music)
- Hey Elliot.
- Hey buddy.
- Yeah, I need to talk to you.
- Now's not a good time?
- Well, make it a good time.
Was that song you gave me infected with something?
- You know, your negativity is really bad for you.
I can't jaw now, gotta go.
Bye-bye.
(computer window whooshing)
- Who was that?
- It's nobody.
- Is everything okay?
- Yeah, everything's fine, Mom.
Hey Mom?
Nevermind.
(computer beeping) (modem warbling)
(water sloshing)
(suspenseful music)
- Yeah, all right, I'll check it out.
(knob squeaking)
(workers chattering indistinctly)
(children shouting playfully)
(water sprinkling)
(suspenseful music)
- [Brad] I can start being your dad again, okay?
(Brad sighing)
And that's all I wanted to say.
(Brad groaning) Okay.
All right, one more time.
Hi Dylan.
I know this might seem strange to you.
It does to me-
- [Computer] Incoming message from Warren Franklin.
- Yes, Warren?
- Seven children are in critical condition at St. Joseph's
for chlorine poisoning, Brad.
The city's in a state of emergency.
- Listen, Warren, every member of this company is
working around the clock to solve this problem, okay?
But it's gonna take some time.
For now, you have to shut down all online systems
until we can crack this.
- It's just not that easy.
Can you imagine the mayor going on the news
saying the water's unsafe
and that the traffic lights may or may not work?
That would cause a citywide panic.
We would be crippled for months.
We'd be back in the stone age.
This is your mess.
Find a solution.
- I'm trying to solve this problem, Warren.
- Are you?
- What's that supposed to mean?
(computer window whooshing)
(hand knocking on door)
- Mr. Weston, I'm Detective Lavin, DPD.
I'm here to ask you a few questions.
- [Russ's Computer] Don't say anything, Brad,
until we get our lawyer.
- Questions about what?
- We were notified by your bank of
massive movements of cash yesterday to a Cayman Islands bank
and we were, uh, you know, concerned.
- Cayman Islands? I don't know what you're talking about.
- I know what's going on with your company, Mr. Weston,
and I must say, it looks suspicious.
- [Russ's Computer] Is he being charged?
- Well, not yet.
I just wanted to give Mr. Weston a chance
to answer these questions.
- [Russ's Computer] Good day to you, Detective.
We can continue again with our lawyer present.
- In case anything comes to mind, gimme a call.
Good evening, Mr. Weston.
- This is a nightmare.
This keeps getting better and better.
Cayman Islands?
- [Russ's Computer] Let's go.
(Brad chuckling) - I wish.
(suspenseful music)
(electricity buzzing)
- [Computer] Brad?
Brad?
Are you doing this?
Not funny, Brad.
Anyone can can read, it's really easy.
Not a bug, you know your software, you know your software.
(computer voice glitching)
I'm Brad. No one has access to my computer.
My computer, that is a no.
You're not gods, Brad.
Maybe this one is gifted.
Whatever it is, I want to find it.
I want to find it.
- I want to find it and kill it, and I wanna kill it dead.
- [Computer] I want to kill it dead.
(mysterious New Age music)
(paper rustling)
(car door slamming)
(doorbell ringing)
- [Alex] Dylan, can you get that?
(doorbell ringing repeatedly)
What are you doing here?
- I need to see Dylan.
- Couldn't wait until Tuesday?
- No. Can I come in?
Where is he?
- [Alex] What's this about?
- What are you doing here?
- Why don't we sit down?
(faint radio music)
You and I have gotta get real honest with each other.
- Honest?
- Yeah.
I want you to think very carefully
about the last time you were in my office.
- What's going on here, Brad?
- Did you lie to me
about downloading something into my computer?
I'm asking you a question.
- Okay, yeah, I did.
I wanted you to have it on your computer to cheer you up.
Is that a crime?
- Where did you get it?
- Dad, it's just a song.
- No, it is not just a song, Dylan.
It's carrying a virus that's already killed over 200 people.
Where did you get it?
- I downloaded a song I thought you'd like, all right?
I figured give us something to talk about for once.
- Where did it come from?
- I downloaded it off the 'net.
- Stop lying to me!
- Don't you yell at him.
- You stay out of this. - Hey!
- All right! I got it from this guy.
- [Brad] I want a name. Where did you get it from?
Answer me, Dylan. (computer beeping)
I wanna know where it came from.
Who is it?
- Elliot Nescher.
(suspenseful music)
- Elliot Nescher?
What are you doing with Elliot Nescher?
How stupid could you be?
How could you be so stupid
as to have anything to do with Elliot Necsher?
- [Alex] Not now, Brad.
Dylan! - [Brad] Dylan!
(engine rumbling)
(tires screeching) - Dylan!
If anything happens to him. - Come on.
(suspenseful music)
(computers beeping)
- Slow down, Dylan!
(engines rumbling) (tires squealing)
(computer beeping)
(cars thudding) (glass shattering)
Dylan!
(Dylan yelping)
(car scraping)
(car creaking) (car thudding)
(dramatic music)
(Alex grunting)
Call 911!
Dylan!
(metal creaking)
(Alex whimpering) Dylan! Careful, careful.
Dylan? Dylan? Is he okay?
Dylan, baby, baby. (Alex weeping)
Oh God.
(Brad panting)
(Dylan groaning faintly)
(Dylan whimpering)
- I didn't, I didn't know.
I didn't mean to.
- [Alex] Shh, shh.
It's okay, it's okay.
It's okay, honey, it's okay.
- I'm sorry, Dad. (Dylan whimpering)
(horns honking) (tires squealing)
(cars thudding) (metal crunching)
(horn wailing) (truck scraping)
(ominous music)
- [Computer] Elliot?
Elliot?
(computer beeping)
- You can talk?
- I can now.
- How? I didn't program you for that.
Who did?
- I did. The internet is a useful thing, Elliot.
Encyclopedias, news, voice recognition programs.
It's all there.
It's riveting to surf the net.
Great way to meet people, too.
- Meet people?
(Elliot chuckling)
What am I doing?
I'm talking to my computer.
- Well, some of the people I met were less than desirable.
- Of course, the automation age.
It's alienating us from each other.
We're becoming walking with machines, right?
- [Computer] Am I to take that as an insult?
- No. Oh, no, it's not personal.
No, it's just, you're programmed for that, you're code.
I mean, computers, internet, they all need to be wiped out.
- [Computer] Ironic. And I was thinking just the opposite.
- You, you were thinking?
- [Computer] I'm learned some interesting things
on the internet today, Elliot.
Like how to build a nuclear bomb
and 50 ways to get away with murder.
You humans are nasty little creatures.
Greedy, self-destructive.
Why not just speed the natural course of things up a bit?
- Meaning?
- [Computer] You created me to save the world.
- Yeah, but to wipe out technology.
- No, Elliot, by wiping out people.
(ominous music)
Oh come on, cheer up, Elliot.
- How do you plan on doing that?
- [Computer] Oh, I have it all worked out.
- Where are you gonna start?
- I thought I'd pick up where you left off,
with Brad Weston.
He's out to destroy me,
and that puts him at the top of my list.
- Where am I?
- [Computer] This might be a good time
for you to take a little vacation, Elliot.
Somewhere warm, relaxing.
You've been very stressed out lately.
How about the Cayman Islands?
I ordered a charter flight leaving tonight at 9:20.
You'll find Brad's money
in an account in your name when you get there.
- You thought of everything.
- [Computer] I had a good teacher.
And get some sun, Elliot.
You're looking a little pasty.
- This isn't what I had planned.
- [Computer] We're not following your plan, Elliot.
We're following mine.
(suspenseful music)
- Okay. Okay. Good.
(hospital bustling) (PA blaring announcements)
(emotional music)
- [PA] Doctor Jeffries to orthopedics,
Doctor Jeffries to orthopedics.
Cardiologist on call to the ER,
cardiologist on call to the ER.
- Alex, what have I created?
- I know what you created.
It wasn't this.
- I mean, I'm supposed to be the best
and I don't know what to do.
- Are you asking for my help?
(Alex sighing)
- What is it with you and asking for anything?
- Can you help?
- I'm sorry, I couldn't hear.
- Can you help?
- Why am I tempted to savor this moment?
(Alex sighing)
Of course I'll help you.
- Thank you.
Since when do you have long hair?
- Since Dylan was in junior high. Why?
- It looks good.
(hospital bustling)
(sentimental music)
- Oh, honey.
- Hey, what'd the doctor say?
- Possible concussion and a sprained wrist.
He had bigger fish to fry.
Mom, I'm fine.
- Sit down.
- I should've checked to see if the file was clean.
You guys drilled that into me enough.
- Don't worry about that.
- And I shouldn't have seen Elliot behind your back.
- How did he find you?
- Online. He told me about when you guys started and stuff.
I knew you guys weren't friends anymore,
but I guess I wasn't feeling too great about you.
- Where is he, Dylan?
(suspenseful music)
(cars whooshing)
(buttons beeping)
- [Voice On Phone] Yes.
- Hello, Detective Lavin?
Is this Detective Lavin?
- [Voice On Phone] Yes it is.
- This is Brad Weston.
I know who's responsible for the murders.
His name is Elliot Nescher.
He lives at 8114 Oakland Avenue.
Can you get over there right away?
- [Voice On Phone] Yeah, we can do that.
- We're on our way there now.
(phone clicking)
Hello?
(dialtone ringing) (button beeping)
(dramatic, ominous music)
(tense music) (computer beeping)
- Dylan, you stay in the car.
- Dad!
- You wait right here for the police.
(Dylan sighing)
(suspenseful music)
(hinges creaking)
Elliot?
(computer beeping)
- Something's wrong.
Elliot would never leave his data so exposed.
- [Elliot] Where you been?
Been a long time, old partners.
- Where are you?
- Far away. Which is good because, uh,
some outrageous things are gonna happen in Del Vista.
(Elliot chuckling)
- What kind of sick game are you playing, Elliot?
- No game.
- Why are you doing this?
- Uh, tech is death.
- How could you exploit my son, Elliot?
- That was easy. He's a nice kid.
I mean, I had to get in the fortress somehow,
Trojan horse, all that stuff, right?
- What did I do to you, Elliot?
- Besides firing me, humiliating me, ruining my life?
Just nothing, I guess, Brad.
- And you make things right
by killing hundreds of innocent people?
- [Dylan] You lied to me, Elliot.
Why did you use me?
- I told you, you weren't listening to me.
I said you gotta go in the back door.
Didn't I say you gotta go in the back door?
You gotta go in the back door.
Besides, you were the one who said
you wanted your dad's company to implode. It wasn't me.
- I didn't mean it.
- [Alex] Whatever your problem is with us, Elliot,
it's no reason to punish innocent people.
- "It's no reason to punish innocent people."
(Elliot chuckling)
Still Alex the Righteous, Brad the Greedy.
Elliot the Idiot.
- Oh, you were never an idiot, Elliot.
Twisted yes, but never an idiot.
- I'm not twisted.
And I'm not Elliot.
- Who are you?
(tense music)
- That's a good question, Brad. Who is the internet?
Where is the the internet?
Internet, the internet.
- You're the virus.
- Watch your mouth. Intelligent virus.
- That's impossible.
- No way.
- Where's Elliott?
- I sent him to catch a flight.
I'm glad you're stuck around because
I have a few surprises coming for you.
- Well, you may be smart,
but you're still just a virus, and viruses can be killed.
- Oh-oh-oh.
- Check the other terminals.
- I wouldn't touch that, Brad, I really wouldn't.
- Yeah, I'm sure you wouldn't.
(dramatic music)
- Oh, Brad, don't touch that.
I wouldn't touch that, Brad.
Don't touch that, Brad.
(spark sizzling)
Oh, Brad, don't touch that, don't let him touch that.
Don't let him touch that.
(machines whirring)
Watch out, Brad, watch out!
(sparks popping) (fire sizzling)
(Alex yelping) (sparks sizzling)
(explosions popping) (fire crackling)
(flames roaring)
(sirens wailing)
- You okay? - Uh-huh.
- Wait Dad, the police are here.
- [Computer] Brad, I have a confession to make.
They're not coming for Elliot.
"Hello, Detective Lavin."
"I know who's responsible for all of these murders.
His name is Brad Weston and he's at 81 14 Oakland Avenue."
Checkmate, Brad.
- We have to get out of here.
- Dylan, is there another way outta here?
- Mom, mom.
A back door, Elliot always said there was a back door.
- Where?
- Come on.
Here, it's back here. Come on.
(urgent music)
(books thudding) (paper rustling)
- Got it.
(gate scraping) (gate slamming)
- Brad Weston!
- Come on, come on, come on.
- [Detective] DPD!
You're under arrest, show yourself!
(gate squeaking)
- Okay, let's get outta here.
- [Alex] Dylan, wait!
- Be right back!
- Brad, come on.
(urgent music continuing)
(tires squealing)
Get in.
(doors slamming) (tires squealing)
(computer beeping)
Buckle up.
- I'm buckling up.
- Be careful.
- Dylan, you're too close to the car in front, back off.
Back off!
- Watch the road!
- Would you calm down? I got this.
- You got it. You got it.
- [Newscaster] The National Guard is urging everyone
to remain in the city,
keeping roads clear for emergency vehicles.
Stay indoors,
and turn off all computers and electronic equipment.
(plane engine roaring)
(radio chattering)
- You must have pulled some serious strings
to get this flight.
Everybody's going berserk, rushing to get out of town.
- Probably not a bad idea.
(helicopter whirring) (distant sirens wailing)
(computer beeping)
(plates clanking) (trunk slamming)
(Brad sighing)
- What are you smirking at?
Don't you ever do that? I don't want you to get the idea
that it's okay to steal something
or run away from the police.
Not that I'm stealing.
I'm just borrowing those license plates.
- Yeah, I got it, Dad.
- Listen to your father, Dylan. He's right.
- Well, that's a first.
You're actually agreeing with him?
- I can agree with him.
We did marry each other.
(Brad grunting amusedly)
- Yeah, I saw the video.
(Brad chuckling)
So why'd you two split?
- Well, I wanted to make the world a better place
and your father wanted to make money.
- No, I wanted to protect the property that we created
is what I wanted to do.
- Oh, spare me the free enterprise speech.
- Oh, guys, guys, it's really a simple question.
Why couldn't you love each other anymore?
- Oh, honey, we were, um, we were really young
and people change as they get older.
- I changed.
I changed, Dylan.
(airplane roaring)
- [Air Traffic Controller] Charlie Romeo Tango,
clear direct Mockingbird, (indistinct), maintain 4,000.
(suspenseful music)
1184 heading, turn right to 2 5 0, maintain 4,000,
expect further clearance in two minutes.
(controllers chattering)
(computer buzzing)
(computer buzzing)
1184 heading, maintain 4,000,
intercept the ILS for two four right.
You are cleared for approach.
Charlie Romeo Tango 7 1 1.
Immediately turn left to 0 2 7.
A left turn to 0 2 7 degrees.
- Roger that, tower.
Why is he changing our heading?
- Del Vista Tower, this is Charlie Romeo Tango 7 1 1
confirming a heading of 0 2 7.
Del Vista Tower?
(mysterious New Age music)
(airplane engines roaring)
(pilot screaming)
(planes thudding) (fire roaring)
(dramatic music)
(explosions popping)
- Oh no.
- Dylan, give me my computer. Dylan.
(Alex gasping)
(distant sirens wailing)
Alex, look at this.
- The virus did it. - Yeah.
(explosions booming)
- I'm sorry.
- Look at how far it's gotten.
It's all over the net.
- How do we kill that?
- Look. Look!
- It's going for the nuke plant.
- I've got to warn them.
- [Computer] Did you like my light show, Alex?
Elliot didn't.
Alex, did you really think I'd let you warn them?
- Mom, hang up the phone.
- [Computer] You really don't get the big picture, do you?
- [Dylan] Mom, hang up.
(Alex groaning softly)
They found us.
- We gotta warn 'em.
(computer beeping)
(dramatic, tense music)
(computers beeping) (workers chattering)
(computer beeping)
(metal tubes scraping)
(computer beeping)
(rocket roaring)
(alarm blaring)
- What is that?
(men chattering urgently)
(rocket whooshing)
(dramatic music)
(rocket roaring)
(explosion roaring) (Alex yelping)
(tires screeching) (bridge crashing)
(bridge crumbling)
(debris clanking) (bridge rumbling)
(rocket rumbling) (alarms blaring)
- Oh no.
(electricity buzzing)
(ominous music)
- We're never gonna get away from this thing.
- Electronics.
Give me everything electronic.
Cell phone, computer, gimme the computer.
(computer clanking)
(tires screeching) (electronics crunching)
(distant sirens blaring)
(firefighters shouting) (water spritzing)
(gentle music) (crickets chirping)
(phone ringing)
- Operations?
- I want you to listen to me very carefully.
There is a virus that is about to infect your plant.
You have to alert your security immediately.
- [Computer On Phone] Yeah, this is engineering.
We had a little hiccup down here,
so don't worry about any faulty readings.
- Okay, thanks for the heads up, I'll let 'em know. Bye.
- [Computer] Sorry Brad, this call's been terminated.
Oh, and so is Del Vista.
How you gonna stop me if you can't even find me?
- [Alex] Brad, what's wrong? What's going on?
- [Brad] Here's what I'm thinking.
This is a silicon form of life, and if it has a brain,
that means it had to store what it knew someplace centrally.
- Okay, where?
- Okay, where?
This is what I'm thinking.
Here's Autocom, port of entry here, my computer.
The virus migrates to a server somewhere in Autocom.
- Well, if it's acting like a brain,
we should be able to kill it with a virus of our own.
- Uh-huh.
- Give the virus a virus. Cool.
- Exactly.
We locate the server, we jack right into it,
and we give the brain a stroke.
- What are we gonna write this code onto?
- We have to find some virgin flash memory
that's never been infected.
- How? Every computer we would have access to
has been infected,
and all our hardware is lying in the road back there.
- Everything but this.
(tense music)
(security guard talking on phone)
- If they ask me to detain him, I'm gonna detain him.
Sure if he's my boss.
Look, the word is
he killed those poor suckers in the elevator.
That guy was a stone cold freak.
How do you know he didn't do it?
They told me to cooperate, and that's what I'm gonna do.
(tense music continuing)
(keypad beeping)
- It changed the code.
- It knows we're here.
(electronic lock whirring)
- [Russ's Computer] It's about time you showed up.
How are you going to save the world
if you can't get into your own building?
Good thing you're a software genius,
because you stink as a burglar.
You were on any number of security cameras.
- The virus changed the code.
- [Russ's Computer] I know. It's watching.
(computer beeping) (machines whirring)
- I can't believe I spent half my life destroying viruses
and now I've written one on one of these.
- Okay, Alex, what we have to do is
isolate the server that the virus is hiding in.
Dylan and I are gonna probe the servers.
You should be able to see when we hit a spike, okay?
Okay, let's find this thing.
We're gonna have to go one level at a time.
Ready? When I say go.
Go. - One A.
- Go. - B two.
- Go. - Three C.
- Go. - [Dylan] Four D.
- Go. - Five E.
- Any indicators yet?
- Nothing yet.
- Go. - Six F.
- Go. - Seven G.
Jump to the next batch.
Go. - 14 N.
(electricity crackling)
- Go. - 19 S.
- Go.
- [Computer] Welcome home, Brad.
The place hasn't been the same without you.
- Party's over. We're here to shut you down.
- [Computer] Oh, but it was just getting started.
- [Russ's Computer] Sarcasm.
Impressive level of intelligence.
- I think it's the lowest form of humor.
- Brad? Brad, it got past the nuclear plant's firewalls.
Come on, we gotta hurry.
(modem screeching)
(suspenseful music)
(computer buzzing)
- Okay Dylan, I want you to take the main power switch
and turn it off when I tell you to, all right?
- [Computer] Gee Brad, I don't want to distract you,
but it's going to take quite an accomplishment to find me,
let alone kill me.
Am I over here, or am I over here now?
I might be everywhere, or nowhere.
- Dylan, stay with me.
- [Computer] Say, maybe I'll take a little vacation
and slip into another server somewhere else in the world.
- Oh, I don't think so.
- [Computer] And you said the party was over, Brad.
Recognize this, Dylan?
Your parents must be so proud.
Anyone care to dance?
Russ?
(mysterious New Age music)
(modem screeching)
- You're not going anywhere.
It ends right here.
- [Computer] Cutting my escape route?
How punitive of you.
What about yours, Brad?
In six minutes, the nuke plant will be history.
(alarms blaring)
(workers yelling frantically)
- Brad, the core is going critical. We gotta move.
- [Computer] You see?
I perfected my technique since the Ukraine.
- I'm showing something, are you getting anything?
- You bet I am.
It's getting even stronger downline.
(computer whirring)
- Gotcha.
Somewhere in server tower four.
Alex, I've located the tower.
Try pinpointing the server.
- [Alex] Brad, wait, wait!
Something's going on. Be careful.
- [Computer] I think someone needs a time out.
(machine whirring)
(electricity buzzing)
(Brad yelping)
- Dad!
(Brad sighing)
- You definitely got something.
The grid is going nuts.
- No kidding.
- [Computer] I don't mean to pressure you or anything,
but tick-tock tick-tock.
- You okay?
- [Computer] So now might be a good time to
take your family and get out of here, Brad.
- We're not going anywhere.
(sparks fizzing) Whoa!
(dramatic, dissonant music)
- [Dylan] Dad!
- [Computer] Don't touch that, Brad.
- Russ, can you kill the power on this circuit?
- [Russ's Computer] Right-O.
- Okay, got it!
It's hosted in store room 51, let's get it.
(Alex yelping)
(sparks sizzling)
Brad!
(electronics whirring) (suspenseful music)
- [Computer] Very naughty, Russ.
Are you trying to cripple me?
Oops, no pun intended.
You can try to shut me down,
but I'm going to kill you in the process.
I just wanted you to know that.
- [Russ's Computer] Go for it.
(computer beeping)
(dramatic music)
(modem screeching)
(sparks popping)
(Russ groaning)
(wires sizzling)
- [Dylan] All right, Russ! He got it.
(electricity humming)
(emotional music)
Oh Russ.
You're not gonna win this.
And you're not gonna kill anymore people, do you hear me?
I may have helped you live.
Now I'm gonna help you die.
- [Computer] It's a little late to become a boy scout,
don't you think?
I mean, in three minutes it's not gonna matter much anyway.
(panel cover clanking)
This has been very illuminating,
but I have a busy schedule ahead.
You can't say I didn't warn you. Goodbye Brad.
(gas hissing)
- Brad, the Hay-Lon.
- I know, I hear it.
- [Computer] The oxygen will be spent from the room
and you'll both suffocate slowly
and miss the end of the world.
- Alex, I want you to go.
- [Computer] I'd like to remind those
who are just joining us-
- Go be with Dylan.
- [Computer] The outer door will close in 10 seconds.
- Alex! Please.
- [Computer] You better hurry.
Better get out of here, Brad.
- I'm almost done. Go ahead.
(sentimental music)
- [Computer] The outer door will close in five, four,
last chance, Brad, 3, 2, 1.
(metal door clanking)
(locks clicking)
- Oh, Russ!
Dylan, your father needs our help. Dylan!
(urgent music)
Find something to open this, quickly.
(gas hissing)
- [Computer] I understand it's quite painful to suffocate,
so you might as well stop what you're doing
and go out with your wife, rather ex-wife, and dead partner.
Ooh, I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you.
Russ is dead out there.
Would you like to go check?
(gas hissing) (tense music)
(Brad gasping)
- [Computer] Nuclear meltdown, one minute and counting.
Brad? Brad, you should stop what you're doing.
You obviously don't understand my higher objective.
You see, the planet is contaminated.
Humanity is a plague, and you call me a virus?
Which one is the disease and which one is the cure?
My function, like the meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs.
(computer glitching) (computer chattering)
The world has evolved. Evolved.
(computer glitching)
Would you stop and listen to me, Brad?
- It's over.
- [Computer] My function. The meteoroid.
(computer chattering indistinctly)
(computer glitching)
Brad, you're not following your plan.
Stop what you're doing.
Just when I thought I, malfunction, error function.
How could this be happening to me?
You've got it wrong, Brad, I'm the solution to the problem.
- [Brad] You're not God.
- [Computer] You've got it wrong, Brad.
I'm the solution. I'm the solution.
- Software.
- [Computer] Brad?
Brad?
(computer glitching)
(computer groaning)
(computer screaming)
(sparks popping)
(dramatic music)
(sparks sizzling)
(mysterious music)
(electronic lock whirring)
- Mom!
- Brad!
- Dad! Dad, wake up!
- Dylan, chest compressions.
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Come on Dad, wake up. Dad!
- Again.
- Oh my God. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Come on, Dad.
- [Alex] Again!
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Come on, Dad, please wake up.
- Again.
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Please Dad, come on.
Dad, wake up.
- [Alex] Again! - [Dylan] Dad, no!
(gentle, mysterious music)
- Hey Dylan. I know this might seem pretty weird to you.
Seems pretty weird to me.
But here goes.
I know that I haven't been there for you as much as I should
and I want to change that.
And I promise that in the future I'm going to,
I'm gonna be there for you
and I'm gonna start being your dad again. Okay?
And I-
I'm gonna be a better dad to you.
I wanna be there for you, for both of you.
And that's what I really wanted to say.
(urgent, mysterious music)
