The Circuit (2008) Movie Script
1
(engine revving)
(cheering)
It's Shines breakin' outta
the pack.
Number 45 Melford has
been challenging all night
but he's losin' ground now.
Whoa, Nelly!
Number 66 looks like his
engine is blown.
There's oil all over the track
and there goes the yellow flag.
Let's see how Shine's crew
handles this mandatory pit stop.
All right, there's three to
go, okay?
Now Number 45 is on your right,
so do it like you do and
bring it home, all right.
Let's go, now let's go.
They're outta the pits and
they're back up to speed with
33 Shines still in the lead.
Whoo.
Come on, come on, come on,
come on, come on.
With just two laps to go.
Right now, car 45 is
really gainin' on Shines.
Come on 33, come on!
Number 33 looks like
things aren't goin' so good
out there for the first time
in this race tonight.
Does Shines have a contender
now?
33 and 45 are neck and neck.
And there goes the white flag.
One more lap to go.
And is it really possible
Number 33 could lose
it this late, or is Shines just
teasin' poor ol' Ricky?
Oh, oh-oh-oh!
No, Shines climbs back into
first place and it's gettin' to
be the same old result here
at Keystone every week.
Oh! Yeah!
Yeah, 33, whoo-hoo!
Uh-huh, bring it home, yeah.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
What do you want?
I'm the aunt!
(cheering)
And on the opposite end of
the spectrum, pretty
Kylie Shines continues her
climb through the preseason
with yet another victory at
Charlotte's Keystone Speedway.
Driving in the late model
division, Kylie's been
dominating the weekend
wannabe's more than any
other amateur in years.
Do you think we're seeing
the birth of another
racing dynasty?
Could be Boomer, but there's
a big jump from
dirt to asphalt.
Although Kylie's night last
night was a heck of a lot
better than papa Al's preseason
last month.
Kylie may be comin' up just as
Papa is goin' down.
After one of the most checkered
careers in sports, Hall of
Famer Al Shines is just not
winning that many races.
As a matter of fact, team owner
Robin Cates may just wanna give
him a trophy for the costliest
driver on Cates Racing.
Three wrecks in three months.
Either that or a one-way
ticket up to Charlotte
so Al can shop for a new ride.
Ooh.
(both laughing)
Meanwhile, tearin' up the
racin' world is Kid Walker.
Last night, Kid Walker
dominated in Atlanta.
The phenom seems to be drivin'
right into the big leagues.
With his playboy charm and
fine-tuned racing tactics,
the Kid has gained a huge
following with his fans.
Particularly the ladies.
(phone ringing)
(TV muted)
Hi Al, I'm returning your call.
Is she there?
Uh, no she's not here.
What do you want, Al?
Come on, Amy, where is she?
You don't live that far
from the track, and I saw she
won on that stupid TV show.
I know, isn't it great?
(door opening)
Oh, uh, yeah, well, it's so
refreshing to hear you sound
like a concerned daddy.
(laughing)
I'll, uh, I'm sure she's
gonna be home soon, Al.
Yeah, okay, well, that's what
I'm here for.
One glorified secretary.
Come on, sis, she's not
returning my calls.
Then you should leave
a message on her phone.
Not with me.
Gotta go, bye.
He just... he wanted to say
congratulations.
And congratulations,
you amazing girl.
Yay.
(laughing)
I love you!
(school bell ringing)
Put the one up top.
12 goes on the bottom,
subtract the two from the four.
What is it, Molly?
Miss Shines, Henry says
I couldn't beat him at soccer...
ever.
'Cause she's a girl.
Ow.
Okay, Molly, now I know what
Henry said hurt your feelings,
but that doesn't mean you can
hit him.
Why don't we try decking him
with your brains?
Both of you, up to the board.
Let's go.
Whoever solves it first wins.
My mommy says competition
only creates adverse relations.
(chuckling) Okay.
I bet your mommy
doesn't win much either.
Okay, go.
(engines revving)
Holy mackerel, Shines makes
an awesome move at the corner
to stay well ahead
of Jim Peterson,
but Shines is just outracin'
them all.
Look out folks, now, Roche
is in her mirror, buddy,
just cannot stay with her into
that final turn.
She easily slides underneath.
Bye, bye.
Shines has a goal away and she
brings home the bacon
by a car length.
Whoo!
Yeah, that's my girl!
Some nice drivin' again
by rookie Kylie Shines.
As they come into the third
lap, it's Baker, Thompson...
(engines revving)
Kylie.
Little Kylie Shines.
Cates, Robin Cates of
Cates Motors.
I know who you are.
I live just down the road there.
I haven't been to this great
track in a decade.
(chuckling)
A lot smaller than I remember.
Nice race today.
Thank you.
What can I do for you,
Mr. Cates?
Well, I've got a flight to
catch, if you don't mind drivin'
with me to the airport.
That sounds good.
What's on your mind?
I wanna talk to you about
racin' for me.
You're a hell of a driver,
Kylie.
Well, preseason's comin'
to an end.
I have four drivers on the
Cates team, and I'm lookin'
for a fifth.
Which driver got cut?
Your father.
I had to let him go.
It's time for the man to retire,
and he will not do it
on his own.
You could be his replacement.
But understand, I'm not offerin'
you a slot yet, you'll have to
prove yourself in the
preseason first.
You know Kylie,
racing is changing.
Young women are its fastest
growin' fanbase, and they love
good-lookin', well-spoken,
studly young drivers
like Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson,
Kid Walker,
and they wanna see you.
Now you can keep drivin'
second-tier courses and
third-rate cars, or you might
just have a place at the show.
Here we are, Johnny.
second-tier courses and
third-rate cars, or you might
just have a place at the show.
Here we are, Johnny.
I'm gonna want your answer
by tomorrow.
I'll give you my answer now.
I'm in.
(laughing)
Johnny, take Ms. Shines
wherever she wants to go.
She was unbelievable.
Congratulations,
Mr. chief mechanic.
(laughing)
We did it.
We're finally in the big
leagues, yeah!
Hey, we might
be in the big leagues.
Right now we've got about two
months of provin' ourselves.
Ah, but it's a real car.
Real money people.
(cheering)
I gotta go help my aunt.
Yeah.
Hey, sunshine.
Sorta ironic, you gettin' your
chance because your dad
got canned.
Look, do I think he got
a crappy deal from Cates?
Yeah, probably.
But you know that old racing
expression, what goes around
comes around?
Well, Al's got the checkered
flag for treating people like
dirt, so now he's the one doing
the shoveling.
Rawr.
I'm just talkin' irony here,
baby, not family pathology.
You know what burns me the most?
No, but I'm sure you're
gonna tell me.
This'll just be another thing
I've done to disappoint him,
starting with not being the son
he always wanted.
That is so not true.
All those times he took me to
go-cart tracks when I was a kid.
He wanted me to love racing, and
then when I did, when I proved
I could be as good as any boy,
he left.
Kylie, it's his job.
Thanks.
Races happen on the road,
not in the backyard.
Are you defending him?
Hell, no, but he did the best
he could, and the best he could
do was leaving you with me,
unless of course, it's me that
you're havin' the problem with.
Hmm, it's always about you,
isn't it?
Well, yes.
Promise me somethin'.
It's really important.
Promise me you won't drive a car
sponsored by feminine hygiene
products.
The thought of seeing tampons
splashed across your hood makes
my skin crawl.
I promise.
I don't get a chance very
much to pull out this old
chestnut, but your mom would
have been so proud of you.
Really?
I don't know, maybe she just
woulda wanted me to be
a teacher.
No.
Your mom, she woulda wanted you
to do what you love.
I want you to know that I...
I wouldn't be racing if
it wasn't for you.
Baby, you'd be racin' if you
were raised by a pack of wolves
in Siberia.
It's in your blood.
(whispering) Oh, shoot, dang.
Not too much gas there, Al.
Oh.
A rough day.
Well, Willie, now there's
a car about your speed.
Yeah, I plan on usin' it
to kick your butt at Daytona
next year.
Speakin' o' which, I heard
you're startin' your own team.
Yeah, soon as I...
sell the condo and the
and the boat.
You wanna drive for me?
I'd have to renew my life
insurance policy.
What about Kylie?
Oh, I don't think Kylie'll be
drivin' for me anytime soon.
Cates got her on the
preseason circuit, huh?
Ah, that's all hype.
Cates cares about one thing,
Kid Walker.
And if a pretty little girl on
his track can get him some more
heat, well that's just more heat
for the Kid.
I'll see you around.
Yeah.
Around and around and around.
Wise guy.
(cameras clicking)
(chatter)
Oh, my God... wow.
Are you serious?
(gasping)
Oh, my God, oh, my God.
That's Richard Petty standing
over there.
Where?
No, don't look, don't look.
He's getting his picture taken
with the entire Cates team.
Don't look, don't look!
Will I seem too desperate?
Yeah, we are desperate.
(camera clicking)
Ha ha, made you look.
Wow.
Ow!
How fourth grade of you.
How fourth grade of you.
Ow, how fourth grade of you.
Kylie Shines!
There you are, young lady.
Need anything?
Anything at all, food, drink,
a new car?
No, thank you Mr. Cates,
I'm good.
It's Robin, please.
Okay.
And you're way better than
good or you wouldn't be here.
Barney, get your butt over here.
I wanna introduce you to
Barney Franklin, he's gonna
be handling your press.
Here's my card, you call me
anytime.
Thank you.
Um, I wanted to introduce you to
Jake Miley, he is my pit boss,
my chief mechanic, and sometimes
works as crew chief, too.
It's an honor to be here sir,
and to be a part of...
You guys enjoy yourselves.
We have a quick
marketing meeting.
Make yourself at home,
look around.
Cates is gonna dump me.
Get over yourself.
If I have to go I have to go,
I just, I wanna know before
I get used to... this.
We're a team.
I can't do this without you.
You mean that?
I'm gonna go get some water,
do you want something?
Yeah, a beer.
No, I'll get it.
Oh, okay.
Meet you back here?
Yeah, okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
We think the two of them
together are totally hot.
This is something I threw
together with Photoshop.
Kid and Kylie, racing's
first super couple.
Our licensing guys are all
over it.
You're not so sure.
Women love Kid.
Hmm, I'm not sure they're gonna
love him lovin' her.
Run some focus groups,
use that poster.
Right, RC.
Were you a dancer?
It's the way you stand,
second position.
Five sisters, four took ballet.
I'm not a dancer.
No, I asked if you were
a dancer, as in used to be.
As in, when you were little.
When I was little, all my
free time was spent under the
hood of a car.
Not a bad education,
learning from a legend.
You know who I am.
Um-hum.
I do indeed, Ms. Kylie Shines.
Hand me that towel, will you?
(scoffs)
What are your legs broken?
Suit yourself.
(clearing throat) Wow.
Kid Walker.
I can see how you came by the
name Kid.
That's funny.
Hmm.
You know, I'll bet you're
a betting girl, Kylie.
Hmm.
You think you can take me?
(chuckles)
Not a doubt in my mind.
Prove it.
Now?
Yep.
Hm, fine.
(tires screeching)
Yep.
Hm, fine.
(tires screeching)
(excited chatter)
Baby wouldn't it be nice
If we could just
Take some time
Oh and drift away yeah
Waltzing toward the sun
Until we reach the clouds
And let's dally for a while
Dally for a while
And then let's go there
Ooh...
It looks like Kid Walker
is taking that turn high...
Whoa, watch out!
No, no, no, no, no!
Yes, yes!
Yes, yes, what, oh!
Man.
Look at video Kid Walker, he's
runnin' around like a crazy man.
They gotta fix that before
this hits the market.
Wow, I mean, come on.
Isn't it a little weird having
your own video game?
Yeah, not as weird as having
your own line of fragrances.
Cates marketing team gone wild,
check this.
(beeping)
This is Kid Walker,
answer the phone.
Do it now.
Wow.
(chuckles)
I mean, really?
Your own ringtone?
Ho, okay well, I guess they must
be pretty sure you were gonna
make Cates' team.
And, why shouldn't they be?
What if somebody beats you?
(snickering/laughing)
Who's gonna beat me, huh?
You don't think much of me,
do you?
Actually right now,
I'm thinkin' a lot about you.
Wow.
No, I'm, I'm sure that line has
worked for you in bars
all across the country, but...
I set my bar higher.
Much higher.
Two years ago.
When was that?
The last time a girl
turned you down.
August 22, two years ago,
Keystone Speedway,
seventh caution flag goes up
when Jennings flat-spins out
of turn two.
There is fire and there
is debris all over the track,
and then suddenly through
the smoke and all the wreckage,
one car makes its move.
A blue Dodge.
Your blue Dodge.
The last 66 laps,
you owned that race.
Your lines, they were perfect.
You make every other driver out
there seem like bush league.
It was incredible.
That was the first time
I saw you race.
That hit your bar?
Uh, 'scuse me, I...
Oh, uh, right, um...
Never mind, I just,
I'll go back...
No, it's, it's cool.
I'm ready to go, Jake.
Um...
thanks for all the games, Kid.
(laughs)
Anytime.
Here.
Thanks.
(chatter)
I'm gonna get you.
Dah!
Watch out.
Yah!
Wow.
Holy cow.
Yeah, holy cow.
So what do you think?
I think everybody needs to
get back to the classroom,
'cause recess is over.
Ohh...
Come on.
(school bell ringing)
Everybody inside.
What's goin' on here?
So you're a teacher?
Substitute.
Oh, this is your fall back.
What?
Your fall back job.
Look, it's cool, I had one, too,
I used to deliver mail, little
blue shorts, running around all
over the place...
Kid, what are you doing here?
Cates wanted your car
brought over.
He's got you scheduled for some
track time tomorrow and thought
that, uh, you two should
get acquainted.
This is my car.
Well, it's got your name
on it, doesn't it?
Look, if this is your way
of trying to get me into bed
or out of my clothes I...
(laughing)
Oh, okay.
Um, wow, uh, let's, let's go
back in the classroom.
Ohh...
Back in the classroom now!
(chuckling)
There's a world outside
You can't outrun
Look back now
At how far you've come
You can turn back
Turn back
This feeling
When you find your dream
You'll find your heart
The finish line
Is where you'll start
You can turn back
Turn back
You're not dreaming
Is this real and now
So start believing
One more mile
Is all you're needing
You can't back down
There's Still so much
To prove
But nothing's left
To lose
Won't be like racin'
at Keystone.
(engine revving)
Now that's pretty.
She's beautiful.
Ready to take her
for a test drive?
Absolutely.
Where can I change?
Right this way.
Is this... Go check it out.
I got it.
(door closing)
(gasps)
Whoo-hoo!
(laughing)
This is your pit crew.
The guy with the blue coveralls,
best spotter in North Carolina.
And that there's Andy Davis,
AKA Crash.
I know Crash.
He was crew chief for my dad
when I was ten.
Guy with the goatee,
that's your lead mechanic.
Jake's my lead mechanic.
You haven't even sat in the
seat yet and you're
makin' demands?
He's been with me
from the start.
Kylie, your career started
the day I gave you a shot
at bein' on the Cates team.
You drive, I do everything else.
Do I make myself clear?
I'll find a spot for Jake.
Okay, take it easy.
Hurry up, Jake.
Check everything out, get to
know the car, just promise me,
don't go all out, all right?
Maybe I would, you know
actually, it all depends...
Jake, Jake...
Hey!
Just go fix a car or something.
Yeah.
Andy, I'm Kylie.
Crash.
You look just like your mother.
Get in the car.
And how's your dad?
Owes me a hundred bucks.
I haven't heard from him since
he moved out of Charlotte.
You gonna get in the car?
Oh.
In the last 30 seconds
I would've won any race you
and I might of run.
Because now I'm inside your
head, you're wonderin',
"How did he know my mother,
does he like my dad,
does he like me?"
Rule number one, from the time
you get suited up, to the time
you get into that seat,
you don't talk to anyone,
look at anyone,
listen to anyone except me.
Just you, me and the car,
got it?
Um-hum.
Now let's see if you know
how to drive.
(tires squealing)
(tires screeching)
Don't turn any hard laps until
those tires come to pressure.
You wanna heat up those tires
gradually.
They'll warm up.
Let's do a few cold laps,
take a nice, easy trip through
the lanes.
Get a feel for the track,
take your time, we got all day.
I'm not really known
for takin' my time.
I heard that.
You attract the flies
with the sugar.
Well, looky here.
(chuckles)
Hm-hmm.
On the gauges.
What's a gauge?
Ha, ha, very funny.
How's your oil temp lookin'?
It's fine.
Can we do some hot laps now?
All right, you feel
comfortable out there?
Balance of the car feel good?
Like a cat in the sunshine.
Okay, keep it smooth.
This car's gonna be awesome,
I love it.
Lots of play.
(tires squealing)
You're running it too hard
into the corner.
I wanna see what she can do.
Tell me how's that balance feel?
Feels great, good to go.
She got too much rear brake.
No, let her make a mistake.
Watch this.
Okay, Kylie, you take it away.
Let's run some hot laps
and see how it goes.
You sure you're ready?
Brake balance feel good?
Born ready.
(engine roaring)
(tires screeching)
You should have known, Kylie,
too much rear brake bias makes
you spin out.
(engine idling)
Okay, bring it in,
we're done here.
(tires squealing)
(brakes screeching)
Let's check this out.
Get the lap time.
Crash?
Crash, look...
Put a rounder wedge in it.
I know it got a little away
from me but next Saturday...
You're not racin' Saturday.
Because of one little screw-up.
Rule number two,
the best drivers race.
Everybody else stays home.
Until I say so, you stay home.
(scoffs)
Rule number three,
I'm sick of your rules.
Lawn needs work.
I'll get right on that.
What you doin' here, Al?
Just in town meetin' sponsors.
Kylie's not ready.
She thinks she is.
Well, you have to talk her
out of it.
Who are you to drop in out of
nowhere after two years and tell
me what to do?
You are the one supposed to
be lookin' after her.
No-no, you're the one who's
supposed to be lookin' after
her, you're the daddy.
I'm just the aunt.
I didn't do this for you
by the way, I did it for Kylie.
You got somethin' to tell her,
tell her yourself.
I'm tired of bein'
the go-between.
Well then, you tell her
to return my calls.
Please.
Hey, you okay?
I heard Cates cut you.
I have walked away from every
wreck I been in.
This ain't any different.
Come back soon.
(whistling)
So how do you think
he got the name Crash?
Hm, it's either a ticking
time bomb or an accident waiting
to happen.
Hey, look who it is.
Great, just when my day
couldn't get any worse.
Why aren't you ever at home?
How come you're in Charlotte?
Just in town for a couple of
weeks meetin' sponsors.
Hi, Mr. Shines.
Get me a beer, will ya, Jake?
Yeah, sure thing.
Don't.
(sighing)
Yeah.
Don't order him around.
I asked for a beer.
He's not a bartender,
and you didn't ask for anything,
you told him.
Are we gonna argue over
a bottle of beer?
What do you want?
Kylie, Cates...
Cates, is giving me a shot
at your seat.
Bad for you, good for me.
What do you say we play
a few racks?
Loser buys a round,
unless you're afraid.
Hmm.
I'll wrack 'em.
Hey, guys.
Oh, Mr. Franklin.
Have you seen uh, Al Shines?
Um...
They told me he was here.
Oh, great.
Oh, this should be interesting.
I was at the track today.
You always wanted me to take
an interest.
A little late for that,
don't ya think?
Give me a break.
Hey.
I've given you dozens.
Fourth grade, I had my appendix
out, you were at Talladega.
Fifth grade, Mark French broke
my heart, you were at Gateway.
Nice.
Seventh grade, Grandma died,
you couldn't make it to the
funeral.
Daytona.
And while I was so
disinterested, I was paying for
your braces, your clothing,
your college...
Second grade, Bristol 500.
Mom got sick.
Now you listen to me.
Look.
You just be careful of Cates.
You really are that desperate.
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
He's like a red phone
Yeah, come on get ready
Bring it all around
Conversation on
On the life unsettling
I've gotta it in my head
So you better get ready
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
(gasps)
Hey
Hey, go, go, go
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
(cheering )
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
Yeah!
Oh!
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
I said, sound the alarm
(engine revving)
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
(chatter)
You're not ready.
(groaning)
No.
(cheering)
(chuckling)
Whoa, slow down, Kyles.
Ugh, I'm such an idiot,
I let him get to me every time.
Well, what'd he say?
What do you think?
I don't know,
that you're not ready?
I'm ready.
I've never been more ready
in my whole life.
I agree.
Then why are you taking
his side?
'Cause you're acting
like a baby.
No, I'm not.
Yes, you are.
No, I'm not!
You're still that little
Kylie sitting on Amy's front
porch waiting for Daddy's
approval, only today there's no
porch, it was a pool game.
La-la-la...
And until you admit that
to yourself, you're gonna keep
reliving little dramas like the
one you had just now.
Don't be mad, come on.
I'm not.
Where are you going?
Kylie, come on.
(tires squeal)
(fans cheering)
Hey.
Where you going?
To watch tapes.
Waste of time.
For you.
Look, you're not gonna learn
to drive by watching TV.
It's instinct,
you drive from your gut.
Tell me something my father
hasn't told me a million times.
Smart man, your pop.
I love you, Kid!
I love you!
Honey, your fans are calling.
Wait.
Have dinner with me at my hotel.
Nope.
Why not?
Look, Kid, you're charming
and sexy, smarter
than you should be.
You love the hunt, and yet,
get bored of the conquest.
Once you've had a woman, you've
already moved onto the next.
Wow.
Oh, I'm not done, your ego.
Size of the Grand Canyon.
First time I beat you,
you'll resent me.
Oh, that's right, see it's cute
to be all flirty with me now
when I'm just the girl, but when
I'm competition it'll just be
like askin' out one of the boys.
(sighing)
(mock sighing)
You got it all
figured out, don't you?
I speak from years
of experience.
No room for error?
No.
Wow, it must be hard being
right all the time.
You have no idea.
Hmm...
Hm, 'scuse me.
Thanks.
It's just dinner.
With a great example of
textbook driving, in the last
lap he takes the checkered flag
and Al Shines is the winner
of the 1984 Daytona 500!
(door opens)
You really do look just
like her.
Oh.
I don't know how that got
in there.
I put it in.
Think what you want about him.
Al's one of the all-time greats.
He's in you, Kylie, so's Susan.
With her guts and his talent,
you could be unstoppable.
Her guts?
I never saw anyone go through
what she did, tryin' to stay
alive.
Never saw anyone go through
what Al did,
watching her die.
(engines rumbling)
(clears throat)
Last Saturday's race.
The one I wasn't in?
I want you to watch Kid Walker.
What am I looking for?
Bad habits, weak points,
blind spots.
What are they?
Figure it out.
So Dynotech is in,
and I'm fully confident by the
end of next week, I'll have
at least two more sponsors.
That sounds good, Al.
Real good.
Don't ya all think so?
And what about you, Jimmy?
You know how it is.
No, I don't.
Why don't you tell me?
It's hard startin' a new team.
Making it a great opportunity
for anybody coming on board now.
We look for pedigree.
Like my 20-plus cups?
Like Cates.
Who I raced for with your
name plastered all over me.
And now suddenly I'm not
pedigree enough, but the Kid is?
(phone ringing)
Look, why don't you let me take
you all out to lunch, I'll buy
you some drinks and we'll uh,
we'll just talk about it.
Maybe some other time.
Thanks for comin' by, Al.
Good luck, and uh, call me
if anyone else comes on board.
What?
Are you kidding me?
(pit crew laughing)
Ha, ha, ha, okay, very funny.
Yeah, that's great.
Where's my stuff?
I have to be on the track
in ten minutes.
Talk to Evans.
He's your sparring partner.
Nice, you're gonna look
hot in pink.
(laughing)
See you around, Cinderella.
Come on, give me my stuff back.
I'll see you out there.
Hey, don't forget
your high heels.
Oh, very funny.
Check this out.
No problem.
(wolf whistle)
Nice suit, Kylie.
Whoo!
You can't drive in that.
Look, Kyles, if you crash
you'll go up like a match.
I don't crash, right, Crash?
(laughing)
Hey, Evans, come here, one sec.
Back me up.
Yeah.
It's so weird, you have like,
um, dude, you have blood on you.
Hey, hey, hey, what the hell
is goin' on?
I'm stealin' your suit.
(crew laughing)
Hey, hey, hey, what the hell
is goin' on?
I'm stealin' your suit.
(crew laughing)
What, no sponsors?
Cates own that, too?
Whoa, hey, hey.
I'll see you on the track.
Nice.
Kylie.
(tires squealing)
(engines revving)
Come on, baby, catch me
if you can, prom queen.
I thought this was a practice.
This is a practice,
you practice against Evans,
not the club.
Come on, go, come on!
Run your own race.
Don't let him drive your car.
Come on, let's see what you
got, sweetie.
Take it easy.
What the...
Come on, girl.
That all you got?
Come on, go!
Kylie, way to go!
Here it comes, rookie.
Ugh!
What the hell was that?
Whoo-hoo-hoo, I've seen
hound dogs quicker than you.
Stay focused.
He does it again
I'm gonna dump him.
He's bumpin' you
'cause he's mad.
Are you mad?
Yeah, I'm mad.
No, you're not.
Take a deep breath, you stay in
the groove.
Who's got the better car?
I've got the better car, Crash.
Yeah, you do.
Trust your car.
Hit your marks.
Run your lines.
Keep going.
Stick with the game plan.
I'm comin' up now, rookie.
(tires squeak)
White flag, one more lap.
Push it hard now,
right in the groove.
Right in the groove.
You got him!
Nice!
Checkered flag,
checkered flag, Shines!
Whoo!
Whoo!
Hey, Evans, who's the pretty
prom queen now, huh, baby?
Looking good.
Whoo!
(cheering)
You were amazing.
You were amazing.
(laughing)
Good driving.
Nice racing, rookie.
I wouldn't be so cocky, junior.
This is just a workout.
You wait until she's in
Saturday's race against you.
Wait, this Saturday?
This Saturday, at Riverside.
(screaming)
Whoo-hoo!
(laughing)
You still wanna have
dinner with me?
Huh, huh?
(chatter)
(phone ringing)
Vodka Tonic please.
Thirsty?
Wow.
You look amazing.
It's a dress.
I know it's a dress.
It's what you do to it that's
so impressive.
Hmm, as impressive as what
I did to Evans on the track?
Evans is a sparring partner.
He's supposed to lose.
You know there's...
You know what,
I'm sorry, let's not do that.
Let's just for like one night
not talk about racing.
Okay.
So do you, uh... Um...
Is Kid your real name?
(laughing)
Actually, it's uh,
it's Bobby Joe.
No... seriously?
Yeah.
Okay.
Your table is ready.
When I was in fourth grade...
Oh, the geography part of
my brain doesn't function.
I mean, I graduated magna cum.
I had a 4.0 and I couldn't tell
you where Idaho is on a map.
Ahh... oh.
Can I ask you a question?
No.
How many women are you
sleeping with?
At this very moment?
Just tell me.
Why?
I don't usually do this.
Eat?
Let myself get off
balance like this.
See, that's your problem.
Why does everybody keep
telling me what my problem is?
It's that you get so emotional.
You would never ever say that
to a guy.
I would if he was.
Listen, if you don't leave your
feelings off the track, you're
never gonna get what you want.
And do you know what you want?
(glasses clinking)
(laughing)
No.
I'm not sleepin' with anyone.
Yet.
(door lock beeping)
(laughing)
How do you like me now, Kid?
That's awesome.
(elevator dinging)
So we'll have breakfast there.
Absolutely.
You always wear that.
Hmm...
it was my mother's.
When I was, um, seven she died
of ovarian cancer.
That's tough.
You remember her much?
Chanel No. 5...
She always wore Chanel No. 5,
and she hummed all the time
and her hands...
she had beautiful,
graceful hands.
Are you an only child?
Al always wanted a son but
I mean, they tried I'm sure.
So what was Al like growin' up?
I wouldn't know.
He left me with my aunt
when I was ten and
Jake was the kid next door.
They became my family.
I don't get it, if you hate
your dad so much...
I don't hate my dad.
You'd think you'd hate racing.
I don't hate my dad.
Are you kidding?
I-I worshipped him.
Al Shines, the greatest racer in
the country and he was my dad.
He taught me to drive
when I was eight,
go-carts then midgets.
He'd go on the road at first and
come back and for the first few
days he was home, I'd pretend
that racing was the greatest
thing in the world
and then one day
it was the greatest thing
and he was gone.
Can we change the subject?
Do you wanna know what we
call my dad?
What's that?
The Chief.
The Chief?
The Chief.
Let's see who the chief
really is.
With 25 laps to go and 125
on the board,
things are really heatin' up.
Quite a battle has developed
between Shines and Walker
in Riverside.
Number 72, MacKay is holding
the lead by a hair.
Kylie!
This is Al Shines' daughter
in car 33 and it looks
like her hall of fame father
must've shown her a move
or two.
I'm not too sure this is how
he'd do it though, Boomer.
It's pretty aggressive and
she's almost reckless.
Wow, she's passing 66
and 32 Scott Allen on the
high side.
41, Walker is not
letting her get away.
What the...
Does she think we're at the
amusement park?
Little bites, little bites.
Take it easy, Kylie,
you're missing your mark.
You've got lots more laps
to do that.
Are you writing the check for
these or is Cates?
Kylie Shines is takin' some
pretty big chances, Wells and
Braniff, one shot.
Whoa, she's passing 'em, Shines
goes up aggressively to third
position with number 41 Walker
still right behind her.
I can tell you I did not expect
this kind of show of the rookie
driver Kylie Shines today,
she is driving to win.
Whoo.
You're over-driving.
Car's should have more forward
bite.
I know what I'm doing.
Be smart, that's the key.
Be smart.
Fast, Crash.
I think you mean fast.
I found a lane that works
for me but it's going a little
loose in the corners.
You got nothin', Shines.
(engines roaring)
Walker passes Shines on the
outside.
Coming into the straightaway...
Whoo!
See ya!
And that moves him into third
behind 44 Alexander
and 91 MacKay.
With 196 laps completed
the leaders will have
to come in for a splash and go,
to make it to the finish line.
Splash and go, splash and
go, you got that, boys?
A pound in the left front, let's
top it up, let's top it up.
Shines is tryin' to splash
and go, we'll get you
out first.
Okay.
Let's see how fast the crews
can get the job done for their
drivers, see who can make time
out there.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Come on, come on!
Get me out.
Jake, come on, you're
slowin' me down.
You use that car up and
she'll be all done before the
white flag.
Give me a sign that you're
hearin' me.
Come on.
Get out of my way.
(tires squealing)
(engine roars)
Uh oh, what happened there?
Whoa.
Whoa, I think she pulled out
around Walker on the pit road
and that's a bit of a no-no,
folks.
What was that?
I thought these two were on
the same team.
You better get in that race
or she's gonna win.
Relax.
I'm just havin' some fun
with her.
With just four laps to go,
Walker catches up with Shines.
And Shines is goin' for broke
passing both Alexander and
MacKay for the lead.
With Walker dropping right
behind her into second place.
Later.
Number 33 in the lead
is drivin' like his hair,
I'm sorry, her hair's on fire.
I know what you mean, Boomer.
When'd she get to be that good.
Come on, Kylie!
Walker set up inside this
track and you know he's all
she can see in her mirrors
right now.
Come on rookie, show me what
you got.
He's right there, stay cool.
I see him.
I don't know if Shines is
used to this kind of driving.
41 will just not leave
her alone.
Kid is pressuring her.
Trying to psych Kylie out.
And he's been in her mirror
for the last three laps now,
trying to break her focus.
Welcome to racing.
(laughing)
I can't get away from him.
Run your own race,
the car will follow.
(cheering)
And Walker keeps draftin'
and trying to move Kylie off the
track and steal this win.
You're two tenths tighter
on the clock, man, that's where
you're gonna get her.
He's not even trying to pass.
Drafting.
The leaders are comin' up on
the final lap, this is really
gonna be a contest between
Kylie Shines and Kid Walker.
White flag, Kylie.
One more lap to go, Kid.
White flag, it's on.
She's gonna mess up
at the corner.
Going into three, fill up
her mirror real good.
Spook her and she'll
over-drive and get mad
then drive right under her.
Whoo!
Keep your focus.
Don't let him make you make
a mistake.
Whoo-woo, yee-haw!
Faster.
This isn't working.
Calm down, Shines.
Stay cool.
Faster.
Down the straightaway Shines
and Walker, nose to tail for the
checkered flag.
She's got him.
No, she doesn't.
He's got her.
Focus, take this next turn easy.
I'm gonna get him here.
Back off.
No.
Don't over-drive that car.
I can do it.
Back off!
(tires squealing)
Shines, that's about
all you wrote.
No!
Oh, ho, ho, ho, no!
She must've tapped those
brakes too hard, she overshot
the corner.
One, two and three it's
Walker, MacKay and Alexander and
Shines comin' in number four.
And Walker gets the checkered
flag.
Oh, baby.
Yeah.
Not today, sweetheart!
Whoo, whoo!
Predictable.
How'd you know that
was gonna happen?
Because all rookies no matter
how good, are the same.
How?
They never listen.
Ugh, she has to be crushed,
you gotta wonder if she was
mentally ready to have Walker
set up in her mirrors like that.
Damn.
I know you're not ignoring me.
Are you deaf, when I tell you to
back off, back off!
How am I supposed to win
sitting back?
Hey Kylie, most important
rule, we race here.
If you're gonna make it onto
Cates' team you're gonna
listen to me!
'Cause you don't know what the
hell you're doin' out there!
You fell for every stupid move
Walker sent your way.
He made you run his race,
not your own.
I was in the race all day!
You were never in the race.
I was in the front!
How many cars crossed the
finish line ahead of you?
I know, but next week
I'm gonna do...
No, there is no next week,
till you learn to listen to me,
you're going nowhere.
I'm done with you.
...your rules!
I don't need this.
Kylie, come on.
I quit.
You don't mean that.
Oh, yes, I do.
Kylie.
(chatter)
Kylie?
Are you okay?
Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.
Oh.
Um, could I see you before
you head home today?
Sure.
Okay, thank you.
(school bell ringing)
(knocking on door)
Kylie?
Hi, Miss Simon.
Hi.
I think I have some good news
for you.
Oh?
We have a long term sub
position that's just opened up.
Oh, how long term?
Well, at least until the end
of the school year,
perhaps permanently.
Uh, bad timing?
Uh, no.
Actually, you have no idea how
great your timing is.
Good.
Because I think this will be
a wonderful opportunity for you.
The kids just adore you and you
can be with them every day,
year after year and then some
day if you're lucky you'll be
teaching their children until...
What?
What?
You can't be a mailman and race.
Do you know what I mean?
No, not really.
I'm sorry.
I...
I think you're great Miss Simon
and I love the children and...
it's just... it's not what
I'm meant to do.
I'm not... I'm not a teacher.
I race cars.
Hey.
(chuckling)
So what, are you giving me the
silent treatment?
I'm grounded
and it's your fault.
Ha-ha!
My fault?
I would've won the race
if you hadn't pulled that crap.
Listen, I beat every other
driver out there.
Do you hear any of them saying
it's my fault that they lost?
No.
So stop being such a girl.
Hello.
Boobs.
Girl.
Do you use 'em to drive with?
(laughs)
You're an idiot.
(chuckling)
How can you believe
That you're
The only one
What kind of mark
Will you leave
When it's all
Said and done
In a world of strangers
Passing by
They'll stop and smile
They'll ask you why
So close and yet
So far away
Live out loud
Don't be afraid
To let 'em see you cry
Live out loud
Don't even wait
To let them see you cry
Oh
(ringtone plays)
Hey, it's Kid Walker.
Answer your phone, do it.
Do it now.
Hey jerk, answer your phone.
(beep)
Hello?
Yeah, thanks dude.
Hey, wake up.
Check this out.
(groaning)
(TV turns on)
Um, seriously?
At Virginia yesterday,
Kid Walker scored a nail biting
win over a pack of challengers.
Nice.
Kid may have won the day and
remains the odds on favorite
to take that empty slot
on Cates Racing but it was
Kylie Shines that'll be talked
about tomorrow.
What?
It was Shines, the rookie and
the daughter of a legend who
electrified the crowd.
Kylie's Corner seemed more
than satisfied with her fourth
place finish.
Could it be that we are
seeing the birth of another
great dynasty.
Oh, that's amazing.
(squealing)
(chuckling)
(laughing)
That's crazy.
(phone dialing)
Hey, it's me.
Yeah, I watched but they didn't
show the interview.
Are you serious?
Yeah, she's right here.
My agent wants to talk to you.
Cates called him.
Really?
Hello?
Hi, no, I'm good, thank you.
Very exciting.
Um yes, no, I, I, I'm sorry.
I can definitely do lunch.
That's great.
Thank you.
Lunch.
It's a train wreck.
Women don't wanna see Kid
with Kylie.
Wow.
Hell, they don't wanna see
him with any other woman.
So much for your super couple.
Kylie tested pretty hot
though, men responded to her.
I need women.
Women are the purchasing power.
Women get me new sponsors.
Women do not respond to other
women who are hot.
Okay, all right.
So, uh, what about a whole
different angle?
What about a father-daughter
match, huh?
Go on.
Uh, uh, left behind after her
mother died, Kylie Shines grew
up not knowing her father,
until now,
when father and daughter
meet for the first time
on the track.
This is not about the trophy,
this is personal.
Or some crap like that.
Women would like that.
Why would Al do it?
Well, he's starting his own
team, right?
Yeah, so?
You can't have a team
without sponsors.
And you can't have a sponsor
without heat.
Racing his own daughter.
Now that's heat.
Oh, oh, here we go
Ooh, yeah
Ooh, ooh
Yeow
What's this all about, Robin?
What do you think about
a race of the generations?
Kid Walker?
You're talkin' about me
and Kid Walker?
Racin' for a spot on this team?
You think Kid is a no talent
poster boy.
I think he's the real deal.
This way we prove it once
and for all.
I don't have anything
left to prove.
Is that so, Al?
You have no money, no car.
Your career's takin'
a trajectory straight
into the pits.
At the very least the heat off
this could be just what you need
to start your own Team Shines.
I'm not interested.
Still wanna show you somethin'.
What's that?
Our latest model.
Hey, Julie can you just
double check our readings,
please?
Thank you.
(clicking)
That's beautiful.
I love it.
Kid, roll your shoulder up just
a little tiny bit, okay?
Yep, beautiful.
Great.
(mimicking barking)
(laughing)
Beautiful.
Yeah, yes, fabulous.
I love it.
Ha, ha, yes.
I love that.
Gorgeous, that's terrific.
(chuckling)
Thank you so much.
We got everything that we need.
We got more than we need.
Where's Kylie?
She should be ready by now.
She's what, shy?
Okay, next set-up guys.
(wolf whistle)
Kylie.
Where do you want me?
Right over here,
you look incredible.
You look amazing,
how do you feel?
Feel comfortable?
You okay?
This is really strange for me.
I'm just gonna get you to try
and open up your shirt
just a little bit,
are you comfortable with that?
Just...
Um, no.
Not really.
Hey, you know what?
Will you give us a second?
Sure.
Hey, you really do look amazing.
Smile, relax, have fun,
this is easy.
Maybe for you.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah, she's ready.
(giggling)
Okay, let's get started then.
Okay, I'm just gonna
get you to...
Can I get the fan on?
All right, here we go.
Sexy.
That's perfect, perfect.
Keep workin' it.
Gorgeous, beautiful.
Get comfortable there.
Perfect, that's beautiful.
Hold it right there.
Yeah, give me some
of that attitude.
Loving it.
(camera clicking)
Perfect.
Perfect.
Hot.
(laughing)
Stop, stop making her laugh.
Yeah, beautiful...
What the hell is this?
It's a poster, Al.
Motorheads'll love it.
This is what you meant by
latest model?
(laughing)
Mr. Shines, it's an honor.
This race isn't about
Kid Walker, is it?
What race are we talkin' about?
A race of the generations.
That is awesome.
A Kid Walker,
Al Shines showdown?
(whistling)
God, you're just as thick
as I thought you were.
It's not just a race between
you and me.
It's all three of you.
And Al, it's great publicity.
I warned you, Kylie.
You said I wasn't ready.
Keep taking pictures.
And you're not.
You have no idea how to deal
with the Cates of this world.
This has nothing to do
with racing.
He's pimping you.
I'm here because
I'm a good driver.
You're here because your...
looks marginally better
than the Kid.
Hey, Al.
Don't do that.
Hey, Kid.
Father, daughter.
Then act like it.
Oh...
Baby, you don't need to help.
Baby?
Did you just call him, baby?
Wow, okay.
You can't handle it, can you?
I'm moving up while you're
flaming out.
You know why you won't race me?
'Cause you're afraid
I'll beat you.
Hey, don't push me.
You think you still got it,
old man?
Prove it, prove that all those
years you spent on the circuit
building the great Al Shines
legend are worth something.
Race me.
Thanks for the ride.
You go talk to Al.
I want that race.
You need that race.
Put me in Tennessee on Saturday.
Tennessee.
He won't go head to head
against me until I'm something
worth beating.
You put me in that race,
I'll be that something.
Welcome to the Tennessee
Motor Speedway for the 22nd
annual Tennessee 200!
It's a hot, hot, hot, hot day
today.
That will be a definite factor
in today's race.
These drivers are gonna fight
for every little bit of traction
they can get out there.
They're going to cook like
burgers on a barbecue
in those tin boxes.
(engines roaring)
Shines can't have been happy
with her starting position
today.
Yeah, it's a lot easier to be
Kid Walker who qualified number
one and is starting out in
pole position.
He's got the inside track,
all right, so Kylie's got a lot
of work to do if she's gonna
catch him, and she's got
a lot on her mind.
And in fact her usual crew
chief Crash Davis,
isn't in the pit today.
Come on, Kylie, let's go,
now let's go, 'kay let's go.
Just take your time, work your
way through the field towards
the Kid, he's still your
leader, now, come on.
Kylie is movin' up pace,
passing number 17, Woods.
Shines looks like an
entirely different racer than
when we saw her last week
at Riverside.
She's goin' into the third
turn, and smartly overtakin'
Roche in car 66.
She's seven and over halfway
Shines passes number 44 Beatty.
She's givin' the crowd
everything they'd hoped for.
That's right Boomer,
a faceoff between Kylie Shines
and the phenom, Kid Walker.
And Shines is passin' 99 now
and moving into second place.
Kid, check your mirror.
33 is right on your tail.
And Kylie Shines,
number 33 is now in second
place, behind Kid Walker,
number 41.
(cheering)
(engines roaring)
Look who learned how to drive.
All right, if it's a race
you want, it's a race
you're gonna get.
Kylie, keep it tight now,
you're doin' great, Kylie,
you're doin' great.
Now you're right on him,
keep the heat on.
Uh-oh...
he's in the wall.
And there's flames comin' out
of that car.
What a mess out there in front
of Walker and Shines.
72 Cooper's drivin'
through that debris but he keeps
goin' I, I think Cooper's right
in front of that...
and headed up the wall.
There's the yellow flag,
Walker and Shines are headed
for the pits.
Everybody go, go, go.
Kylie, you're doing great.
Let's go, let's go,
we're fallin' behind.
Get him out there, come on,
get him out there.
I think 72 Cooper has
sustained some damage drivin'
past that wreck.
Let's take a look in the pit.
Now, you've gotta watch when
you take it down low.
Protect the bottom.
What the hell is she doing?
I can't get her off of my tail.
They're patching up his front
end with what looks like duct
tape and by golly...
Go!
All right, good.
Let's go, guys, come on,
let's go.
(tires screeching)
(engines roaring)
So that's how it's gonna
be, huh?
You gotta wonder if it's
smart for his crew to put that
car back out there.
I mean, they must believe that
patch job is gonna hold up
through the rest of the race.
All right, the track is clear
and green, green, green, we're
back to racing in Tennessee.
Walker back in the track and
Kylie Shines behind him.
We got a real race here, folks,
with 21 laps to go.
Keep hitting your marks, Kid.
Stay outta your mirror,
stay outta your mirror.
He's got Shines right on his
tail, she's doin' to him what he
did to her last week.
Tit for tat.
Did you actually say that on
ABC Family?
No, zig for zag?
Better.
Come on, Kylie!
Walker and Shines are comin'
up on 72 Cooper,
who is a lap down
after his contact with the wall.
Oh, Cooper's bumper is
fallin' off on the track.
Kid look for some debris,
it's on a turn comin' up.
What turn?
We're swerving.
Kylie, watch your fender
on the corner, Kylie.
Say it again.
Turn three, kid, turn three.
Whoa!
(tires screeching)
Oh!
Shines ran over some of that
debris.
She's slowin' with some
kinda damage.
The fender of 72 must've
gotten up into an oil line,
that windshield is just covered
in grease.
I have no idea how she's
drivin' that race car.
Shows a lot of maturity
on Shines part.
You gotta know that she's got
a heartache right now, knowing
that she was the car to beat.
Well, she's gonna be back.
(crowd groans)
Checkered flag, here we go.
You got lucky this time, Kid.
Kid Walker for the first
place...
Kyl.
Uh... Ha!
Kyles, are you okay?
My wrist.
What the hell happened to you?
It was my fault.
How's that?
I-I-I put a new oil line in
at the last minute,
and didn't get the shield
to protect it back on.
That's bush league!
I'm sorry, it won't happen
again, Mr. Cates.
You're damn right it won't
because you're fired!
What?
Hold on, it was a mistake.
Mistake?
Do you know how much money you
and your daddy's mistakes
cost me?
I won't have some hayseed
mechanic screwin' up
the damn cars!
And if you're smart,
you won't either.
I'll go clean my tools
out of the trailer.
You're damn right, you will.
(door opens, closes)
Wow, you feelin' sorry
for yourself?
I can't even do the whole
eating while depressed thing.
Pass me the chips.
(sighs)
I can't win for losing.
Kid was supposed to come by
but he never called,
I saved the car but lost Jake.
(doorbell ringing)
Maybe that's Kid.
Put that ice cream away
before it melts.
You ran a good race today.
I'm on my way to meet Kid.
(clearing throat)
Well, I'm not goin' anywhere,
Kylie, I'm... I'm here to stay.
Do you want a rocking chair?
One of us has to
make the first move.
You qualified first.
All right.
I'm tired of us being angry
at each other all the time.
I agree.
If you wanna race, that's fine,
but it's just us,
away from the, uh...
the crowds, the publicity
machine, away from Cates.
And how do you suggest
we do that?
You racing in that old thing?
Well, I've been keepin' her
up all these years, now it's
time to see if she can
still cut it.
Fine, fire up
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
(engine starts cold)
(revving)
Look Kylie, look honey.
It's daddy, look!
Starting is Al Shines!
Too loud!
Wave to Daddy, Kylie.
Wish Daddy luck.
Hi, Daddy!
He doesn't see me, Mommy,
he doesn't see me.
He will, baby, he'll see you.
He'll see you.
(cuts engine off)
What?
You never saw me.
You still don't.
I'm not stupid, I know what
they're all saying.
She's only here 'cause
she's a girl or she's
Al Shines' daughter.
I'm a damn good driver.
I don't need to race you on an
empty track in the dark
with antique cars.
You wanna show me respect?
Then show up, two weeks.
Hey.
(shower running)
Kylie, what are you
doin' here?
I'm sorry, I'm nervous about
the press conference and...
Can we talk about this later?
Baby, it's important.
Okay, I'll meet you
downstairs in the bar.
The bar?
Is that the champagne, Kid?
(sighing)
Wow.
(exhaling)
Is that another sister,
Kid?
It's not like that.
This goes back a long time.
How long is long?
Long enough that you were
hooking up with her when you
were sleeping with me?
Whoo, okay, just go back to bed.
Kylie, hey.
I'm sorry but you knew
what this was.
What?
Charity event, great publicity.
It wasn't just great
publicity for me, it was great
publicity for you, too.
Yeah, it was great for me.
Thanks for the ride.
See you at the press conference.
(cheering)
At the end of one of the most
excitin' preseason's in racin'
history, I'm proud to announce
a unique charity event.
The event will feature two of
the most exciting up and comers
lighting up the race car world,
Kid Walker and Kylie Shines!
(cheering)
How does it feel to be in the
race of the sexes?
You know honestly,
I think it's amazing.
Now, no matter what happens in
this race, whether she wins or
loses, Kylie Shines is a credit
to women everywhere and the
future of female racing.
Thanks Kid, for that
inspiring speech but the last
time I looked under the hood of
a car, they didn't have sexes.
(crowd laughing)
Thank you.
I would like to make
one correction.
This isn't just gonna be
a race of the sexes.
There will be a third driver.
Ladies and gentlemen,
racing legend Al Shines!
(cheering and applause)
(cameras clicking)
A week from now, racing will
match up, woman against man,
youth versus experience,
legend versus superstar,
and father versus daughter.
I've still got that spot
on the team, right?
Let's just see what happens
on Saturday.
We had a deal.
Well, deals change.
You happy now?
May the best man win.
Jake, where were you?
I thought you were gonna be at
the press conference.
Hey, what's goin' on?
Got a job with the Forlani
crew in Portland.
You can't leave, not now.
Here's the thing Kyles,
I actually can.
But what about the... I heard,
the race of the generations.
You have to be there.
Where were you when Cates
was firing me?
Oh, right, you were standing
right there.
I know, I'm sorry but
I promise it won't happen again,
Jake, I need you.
Just not the same way that
I need you.
God, Kylie you've known how
I felt about you since
the sixth grade.
You've known I wanted more than
friendship, and you've
taken advantage of that.
Jake, don't...
No, I'm finally okay with it.
You, me, we'd never work out,
right?
We're just too close to be
that close.
It's my problem, it's not yours,
but I just can't be
around you right now.
I mean, come on, we're good
luck for each other...
Kyles.
You're a good racer, maybe even
a great racer but you need to
start looking to yourself.
You don't need me to bring you
good luck.
You don't need Kid to do
whatever he does for you,
and you sure as hell don't
need your dad to approve.
You just need to drive.
Fast, drive fast, that's all.
(tires screeching)
Well, here it is, race fans,
a very unusual challenge match,
not on any schedule but with
more interest than many of the
cup finals.
It's Shines versus Shines versus
Walker, battling it out for a
place at the big show.
Winner gets to ride in the Robin
Cates racing team, losers go
home and try again next
preseason.
Robin Cates has generously
donated half a million dollars
from Cates Industries and his
team sponsors are matchin' that.
One million dollars to the
Cates' Family Kids Foundation.
First of all, I wanna thank
Mr. Cates and our sponsors for
letting me participate in
today's race, I mean any time
you have a chance to race
against a legend like Al Shines,
growing up he was one of my
heroes and then to also be able
to race against his daughter
Kylie, who I've gotten to know
pretty well, on and off the
track, I gotta say, aggressive
driver, real aggressive racer,
just kind of an aggressive
person overall.
So I think today it's gonna be
really interesting.
But other than that, let's be
honest, the sun is shining, the
stands are packed and this is
the dream, what more could you
ask for, you know?
Crash?
What are you doing here?
Makin' sure you don't kill
yourself.
You stickin' around
for the race?
Thought I might.
Unless you want Jonesy as your
crew chief.
No, no.
I want you to stay.
Next time I'll listen to you.
Next time, there won't be
a next time if you don't.
You got that shield on tight?
Yes, sir.
Hey, Kyles, uh, you know,
Portland can wait a day.
I had to see this one, I've
worked too damn hard to watch
this from the stands.
You worked, huh?
Look, I know you don't
need it but... good luck.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
(laughing)
Let's go.
Let's do it.
Will the drivers please take
their positions on the track.
(engines roaring)
Now this is somethin' we don't
see every day.
A standin' start.
Three race cars on a half
mile track.
Shines senior has been on the
sidelines since his last
crack-up.
And Shines junior has had
a few chances to beat
Kid Walker but so far her cup
has come up empty.
Now Kid will most likely have
an advantage over Shines and
Shines in this portion
of the race track.
Well, at Shines age, my three
legged golden retriever has an
advantage over him on foot.
Ladies and gentlemen, please
welcome the main sponsor of
today's event, Robin Cates.
(cheers and applause)
Welcome, North Carolina,
happy race day!
We're bringing you a race
featuring the future hall of
famer, Al Shines, his beautiful
daughter Kylie Shines!
(cheering)
And the new face of racing,
Kid Walker!
(cheering and whistles)
Lady and gentlemen,
get ready to start your engines!
(cheering)
Whoo.
(cheering)
(wind blowing)
(crowd roars)
(cars starting, engines roar)
And they're off.
(tires squealing)
Walker gets the drop on
Shines and Shines, but Kylie
Shines is not gonna give up the
real estate that easily.
She looks to the outside,
tryin' to move to the front but
Walker has got the preferred
line, they're door to door as
they move into turn three.
What I hear, there must
be a lot of animosity between
the Kid and Kylie.
I heard that, and they both
want that Cates ride really bad.
I don't think so, Kylie.
Kylie is focused and on her
game but she can't seem to get
around Kid.
All this is happening at
speeds faster than we ever see
out here.
Three racers with the track
all to themselves.
Al's got the best seat
in the house.
It looks like he's just sittin'
back to watch Kylie and Kid
run each other over the track.
Al's not gonna make
a move on us.
No, Al's always comfortable
in third, for a while.
Smooth and patient, right Crash?
Al's wanting you to go after
Kid so you two wear
yourselves out.
And comin' round the fourth
turn we have Walker, Shines
and Shines again.
We're now at lap 50 and
Walker is still in the lead,
followed by Kylie Shines
with Al Shines in third.
Protect the bottom there,
he wants you on the inside.
Kid keeps tryin' to pull out
in front but no matter where
he goes, she's right there.
Nope.
She's in there.
She's in there.
And man, almighty she's a
good little driver.
She's takin' everything he's
throwin' her way, she's still
right on his tail.
Let's see how Kid likes
this bumper to bumper play.
Steady Andy,
running my own race.
Kylie seems to have found
a new style of drivin'
all of a sudden.
She's a quick learner
all right, patient,
more focused.
I know.
What will Walker do with this?
He can't seem to shake her.
I've had enough of these games.
She wants to play like this,
I'm gonna show her how the
big boys play.
Keep hittin' your mark.
She wants to ride on your tail
like that, then you brake check
her and pull away fast.
Okay, which turn?
Turn two, three or four?
Turn two, turn two.
They're coming into the
straightaway and Shines is
drafting while pressing Walker
and it looks like she's gonna
try and pass and take the lead.
Brake check.
Ooh, Walker's brake checking,
trying to keep Kylie.
(tires squealing)
Walker's car is all outta steam.
(metal crunching)
Whoo, look out,
the car is into the wall.
(crowd moans)
Whoa.
Is he okay?
Walker still has not dropped
his window net.
Oh, man.
Is he okay?
Is Kid out?
(siren sounding)
Ladies and gentlemen,
number 41, Kid Walker has gone
into the wall.
Please remain patient while the
emergency crews do their work.
Is Kid out?
I can't see 'em.
They, they still haven't gotten
to him yet.
Wait.
I see him.
Yeah, he's walkin' away.
He's okay.
Kylie Shines and Al Shines
have cleared Walker but he
is definitely out of this race.
We've got a yellow flag.
And here comes the pace car for
Shines and Shines, as Walker
walks away from his car,
good news.
The crowd gives the Kid
a big hand.
I'm not worried about the Kid,
there's gonna be a sequel
in that good ol' boys future.
They're pushin' Walker's car off
the track and now it truly is
a race of the generations.
Well, it's the youth over
experience, we've seen so little
of Al Shines this season but
I think everybody at this track
knows what he's capable of.
That's right, he certainly
has more wins under his belt
than Walker and Shines and the
rest of the Cates team combined.
But we've seen enough of
Kylie Shines to know,
she isn't afraid of a fight.
It's just you and Al now.
And Al Shines has pulled up
next to Kylie.
That's my dad.
What do you think, Crash?
Why, do you want a cup of tea
or somethin'?
Al's not gonna just let you win.
He's gonna make you beat him.
And it looks like they're
gettin' the green flag, yes,
they are getting the green flag.
Pace car has moved
off the track.
Go, go!
And Shines and Shines are
still open long like they're
out for a Sunday drive.
It's a family affair.
What is goin' on down there?
They've got one big wide open
track in front of 'em and
neither one is makin'
the first move.
(crowd roars)
Uh, here they go.
Focus.
Trust your car, hit your marks,
run your line.
Okay, baby girl,
show me what you got.
These speeds are never
achieved but with only two cars
on the track, they're goin'
all out.
Got anything left,
use it now, Kylie.
Holdin' it steady
through the corners.
I'll get my chance.
Push it hard now, in the
groove, in the groove.
(engine revs)
Kylie buries the throttle.
Whoo, it just doesn't get any
better than this.
But oh, Kylie's makin' a bold
move, comin' outta turn two.
All right, let's see it!
Fake fast on the inside Al,
and then go high
and around her.
He's makin' his move.
On the inside, I got 'em.
Now Al, go high, go, go.
He's waitin' for it,
wants to go up around.
I see him.
Show her your fender up top.
Oh, and Kylie is blockin'
every move that Al Shines makes.
She's out drivin' her ol' man.
Yes, good drivin', white flag!
One more lap Al,
give it all you got.
I am giving it all I got.
He's pushing the car,
but you can take it home now.
Nice and smooth.
Yeah!
(cheering)
It's Kylie Shines takin'
the checkered flag.
(cheering)
Whoo!
Oh, Kylie don't scream
into the headset.
You'll blow out the only good
ear I got left.
We did it, baby!
Yes.
(laughing)
Yeah!
(cheering, whistles)
(cameras clicking)
Where's my winner?
(screaming)
Where's my girl?
The newest member of the Cates
Racing family.
(laughing)
Kylie, whoo!
I love you.
Come on.
(both laughing)
Whoo.
Come on.
(laughing)
Oh uh, I'll go get
the truck.
Best driver won today.
I've missed you.
I know.
I'm starting my own team.
Really?
So you're lookin'
for drivers then.
You interested?
Al, congratulations, darlin',
you got a spot on the Cates
Racin' team.
Thanks, darlin'.
But, uh, I think I just got
a better offer.
But you have a deal.
Um-hum.
Team Shines.
I want top billing.
Age before beauty.
Who just won the race?
And who won the hundred races
before that?
Oh, so that's how it's
gonna be, huh?
You have no idea.
Wow.
Um, hey, isn't it tradition for
the winner to get a kiss
from some beautiful girl.
Yeah.
Hum.
Kylie, get your mitts off my
chief mechanic.
Welcome to the
Winner's circle
Now it's time
For celebration
It's time for good vibration
Welcome to the
Winner's circle of friends
I hope it never ends
Cross the finish line
Now is the time
Oh, yeah
Welcome to the
Winner's circle
(engine revving)
(cheering)
It's Shines breakin' outta
the pack.
Number 45 Melford has
been challenging all night
but he's losin' ground now.
Whoa, Nelly!
Number 66 looks like his
engine is blown.
There's oil all over the track
and there goes the yellow flag.
Let's see how Shine's crew
handles this mandatory pit stop.
All right, there's three to
go, okay?
Now Number 45 is on your right,
so do it like you do and
bring it home, all right.
Let's go, now let's go.
They're outta the pits and
they're back up to speed with
33 Shines still in the lead.
Whoo.
Come on, come on, come on,
come on, come on.
With just two laps to go.
Right now, car 45 is
really gainin' on Shines.
Come on 33, come on!
Number 33 looks like
things aren't goin' so good
out there for the first time
in this race tonight.
Does Shines have a contender
now?
33 and 45 are neck and neck.
And there goes the white flag.
One more lap to go.
And is it really possible
Number 33 could lose
it this late, or is Shines just
teasin' poor ol' Ricky?
Oh, oh-oh-oh!
No, Shines climbs back into
first place and it's gettin' to
be the same old result here
at Keystone every week.
Oh! Yeah!
Yeah, 33, whoo-hoo!
Uh-huh, bring it home, yeah.
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
What do you want?
I'm the aunt!
(cheering)
And on the opposite end of
the spectrum, pretty
Kylie Shines continues her
climb through the preseason
with yet another victory at
Charlotte's Keystone Speedway.
Driving in the late model
division, Kylie's been
dominating the weekend
wannabe's more than any
other amateur in years.
Do you think we're seeing
the birth of another
racing dynasty?
Could be Boomer, but there's
a big jump from
dirt to asphalt.
Although Kylie's night last
night was a heck of a lot
better than papa Al's preseason
last month.
Kylie may be comin' up just as
Papa is goin' down.
After one of the most checkered
careers in sports, Hall of
Famer Al Shines is just not
winning that many races.
As a matter of fact, team owner
Robin Cates may just wanna give
him a trophy for the costliest
driver on Cates Racing.
Three wrecks in three months.
Either that or a one-way
ticket up to Charlotte
so Al can shop for a new ride.
Ooh.
(both laughing)
Meanwhile, tearin' up the
racin' world is Kid Walker.
Last night, Kid Walker
dominated in Atlanta.
The phenom seems to be drivin'
right into the big leagues.
With his playboy charm and
fine-tuned racing tactics,
the Kid has gained a huge
following with his fans.
Particularly the ladies.
(phone ringing)
(TV muted)
Hi Al, I'm returning your call.
Is she there?
Uh, no she's not here.
What do you want, Al?
Come on, Amy, where is she?
You don't live that far
from the track, and I saw she
won on that stupid TV show.
I know, isn't it great?
(door opening)
Oh, uh, yeah, well, it's so
refreshing to hear you sound
like a concerned daddy.
(laughing)
I'll, uh, I'm sure she's
gonna be home soon, Al.
Yeah, okay, well, that's what
I'm here for.
One glorified secretary.
Come on, sis, she's not
returning my calls.
Then you should leave
a message on her phone.
Not with me.
Gotta go, bye.
He just... he wanted to say
congratulations.
And congratulations,
you amazing girl.
Yay.
(laughing)
I love you!
(school bell ringing)
Put the one up top.
12 goes on the bottom,
subtract the two from the four.
What is it, Molly?
Miss Shines, Henry says
I couldn't beat him at soccer...
ever.
'Cause she's a girl.
Ow.
Okay, Molly, now I know what
Henry said hurt your feelings,
but that doesn't mean you can
hit him.
Why don't we try decking him
with your brains?
Both of you, up to the board.
Let's go.
Whoever solves it first wins.
My mommy says competition
only creates adverse relations.
(chuckling) Okay.
I bet your mommy
doesn't win much either.
Okay, go.
(engines revving)
Holy mackerel, Shines makes
an awesome move at the corner
to stay well ahead
of Jim Peterson,
but Shines is just outracin'
them all.
Look out folks, now, Roche
is in her mirror, buddy,
just cannot stay with her into
that final turn.
She easily slides underneath.
Bye, bye.
Shines has a goal away and she
brings home the bacon
by a car length.
Whoo!
Yeah, that's my girl!
Some nice drivin' again
by rookie Kylie Shines.
As they come into the third
lap, it's Baker, Thompson...
(engines revving)
Kylie.
Little Kylie Shines.
Cates, Robin Cates of
Cates Motors.
I know who you are.
I live just down the road there.
I haven't been to this great
track in a decade.
(chuckling)
A lot smaller than I remember.
Nice race today.
Thank you.
What can I do for you,
Mr. Cates?
Well, I've got a flight to
catch, if you don't mind drivin'
with me to the airport.
That sounds good.
What's on your mind?
I wanna talk to you about
racin' for me.
You're a hell of a driver,
Kylie.
Well, preseason's comin'
to an end.
I have four drivers on the
Cates team, and I'm lookin'
for a fifth.
Which driver got cut?
Your father.
I had to let him go.
It's time for the man to retire,
and he will not do it
on his own.
You could be his replacement.
But understand, I'm not offerin'
you a slot yet, you'll have to
prove yourself in the
preseason first.
You know Kylie,
racing is changing.
Young women are its fastest
growin' fanbase, and they love
good-lookin', well-spoken,
studly young drivers
like Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson,
Kid Walker,
and they wanna see you.
Now you can keep drivin'
second-tier courses and
third-rate cars, or you might
just have a place at the show.
Here we are, Johnny.
second-tier courses and
third-rate cars, or you might
just have a place at the show.
Here we are, Johnny.
I'm gonna want your answer
by tomorrow.
I'll give you my answer now.
I'm in.
(laughing)
Johnny, take Ms. Shines
wherever she wants to go.
She was unbelievable.
Congratulations,
Mr. chief mechanic.
(laughing)
We did it.
We're finally in the big
leagues, yeah!
Hey, we might
be in the big leagues.
Right now we've got about two
months of provin' ourselves.
Ah, but it's a real car.
Real money people.
(cheering)
I gotta go help my aunt.
Yeah.
Hey, sunshine.
Sorta ironic, you gettin' your
chance because your dad
got canned.
Look, do I think he got
a crappy deal from Cates?
Yeah, probably.
But you know that old racing
expression, what goes around
comes around?
Well, Al's got the checkered
flag for treating people like
dirt, so now he's the one doing
the shoveling.
Rawr.
I'm just talkin' irony here,
baby, not family pathology.
You know what burns me the most?
No, but I'm sure you're
gonna tell me.
This'll just be another thing
I've done to disappoint him,
starting with not being the son
he always wanted.
That is so not true.
All those times he took me to
go-cart tracks when I was a kid.
He wanted me to love racing, and
then when I did, when I proved
I could be as good as any boy,
he left.
Kylie, it's his job.
Thanks.
Races happen on the road,
not in the backyard.
Are you defending him?
Hell, no, but he did the best
he could, and the best he could
do was leaving you with me,
unless of course, it's me that
you're havin' the problem with.
Hmm, it's always about you,
isn't it?
Well, yes.
Promise me somethin'.
It's really important.
Promise me you won't drive a car
sponsored by feminine hygiene
products.
The thought of seeing tampons
splashed across your hood makes
my skin crawl.
I promise.
I don't get a chance very
much to pull out this old
chestnut, but your mom would
have been so proud of you.
Really?
I don't know, maybe she just
woulda wanted me to be
a teacher.
No.
Your mom, she woulda wanted you
to do what you love.
I want you to know that I...
I wouldn't be racing if
it wasn't for you.
Baby, you'd be racin' if you
were raised by a pack of wolves
in Siberia.
It's in your blood.
(whispering) Oh, shoot, dang.
Not too much gas there, Al.
Oh.
A rough day.
Well, Willie, now there's
a car about your speed.
Yeah, I plan on usin' it
to kick your butt at Daytona
next year.
Speakin' o' which, I heard
you're startin' your own team.
Yeah, soon as I...
sell the condo and the
and the boat.
You wanna drive for me?
I'd have to renew my life
insurance policy.
What about Kylie?
Oh, I don't think Kylie'll be
drivin' for me anytime soon.
Cates got her on the
preseason circuit, huh?
Ah, that's all hype.
Cates cares about one thing,
Kid Walker.
And if a pretty little girl on
his track can get him some more
heat, well that's just more heat
for the Kid.
I'll see you around.
Yeah.
Around and around and around.
Wise guy.
(cameras clicking)
(chatter)
Oh, my God... wow.
Are you serious?
(gasping)
Oh, my God, oh, my God.
That's Richard Petty standing
over there.
Where?
No, don't look, don't look.
He's getting his picture taken
with the entire Cates team.
Don't look, don't look!
Will I seem too desperate?
Yeah, we are desperate.
(camera clicking)
Ha ha, made you look.
Wow.
Ow!
How fourth grade of you.
How fourth grade of you.
Ow, how fourth grade of you.
Kylie Shines!
There you are, young lady.
Need anything?
Anything at all, food, drink,
a new car?
No, thank you Mr. Cates,
I'm good.
It's Robin, please.
Okay.
And you're way better than
good or you wouldn't be here.
Barney, get your butt over here.
I wanna introduce you to
Barney Franklin, he's gonna
be handling your press.
Here's my card, you call me
anytime.
Thank you.
Um, I wanted to introduce you to
Jake Miley, he is my pit boss,
my chief mechanic, and sometimes
works as crew chief, too.
It's an honor to be here sir,
and to be a part of...
You guys enjoy yourselves.
We have a quick
marketing meeting.
Make yourself at home,
look around.
Cates is gonna dump me.
Get over yourself.
If I have to go I have to go,
I just, I wanna know before
I get used to... this.
We're a team.
I can't do this without you.
You mean that?
I'm gonna go get some water,
do you want something?
Yeah, a beer.
No, I'll get it.
Oh, okay.
Meet you back here?
Yeah, okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
We think the two of them
together are totally hot.
This is something I threw
together with Photoshop.
Kid and Kylie, racing's
first super couple.
Our licensing guys are all
over it.
You're not so sure.
Women love Kid.
Hmm, I'm not sure they're gonna
love him lovin' her.
Run some focus groups,
use that poster.
Right, RC.
Were you a dancer?
It's the way you stand,
second position.
Five sisters, four took ballet.
I'm not a dancer.
No, I asked if you were
a dancer, as in used to be.
As in, when you were little.
When I was little, all my
free time was spent under the
hood of a car.
Not a bad education,
learning from a legend.
You know who I am.
Um-hum.
I do indeed, Ms. Kylie Shines.
Hand me that towel, will you?
(scoffs)
What are your legs broken?
Suit yourself.
(clearing throat) Wow.
Kid Walker.
I can see how you came by the
name Kid.
That's funny.
Hmm.
You know, I'll bet you're
a betting girl, Kylie.
Hmm.
You think you can take me?
(chuckles)
Not a doubt in my mind.
Prove it.
Now?
Yep.
Hm, fine.
(tires screeching)
Yep.
Hm, fine.
(tires screeching)
(excited chatter)
Baby wouldn't it be nice
If we could just
Take some time
Oh and drift away yeah
Waltzing toward the sun
Until we reach the clouds
And let's dally for a while
Dally for a while
And then let's go there
Ooh...
It looks like Kid Walker
is taking that turn high...
Whoa, watch out!
No, no, no, no, no!
Yes, yes!
Yes, yes, what, oh!
Man.
Look at video Kid Walker, he's
runnin' around like a crazy man.
They gotta fix that before
this hits the market.
Wow, I mean, come on.
Isn't it a little weird having
your own video game?
Yeah, not as weird as having
your own line of fragrances.
Cates marketing team gone wild,
check this.
(beeping)
This is Kid Walker,
answer the phone.
Do it now.
Wow.
(chuckles)
I mean, really?
Your own ringtone?
Ho, okay well, I guess they must
be pretty sure you were gonna
make Cates' team.
And, why shouldn't they be?
What if somebody beats you?
(snickering/laughing)
Who's gonna beat me, huh?
You don't think much of me,
do you?
Actually right now,
I'm thinkin' a lot about you.
Wow.
No, I'm, I'm sure that line has
worked for you in bars
all across the country, but...
I set my bar higher.
Much higher.
Two years ago.
When was that?
The last time a girl
turned you down.
August 22, two years ago,
Keystone Speedway,
seventh caution flag goes up
when Jennings flat-spins out
of turn two.
There is fire and there
is debris all over the track,
and then suddenly through
the smoke and all the wreckage,
one car makes its move.
A blue Dodge.
Your blue Dodge.
The last 66 laps,
you owned that race.
Your lines, they were perfect.
You make every other driver out
there seem like bush league.
It was incredible.
That was the first time
I saw you race.
That hit your bar?
Uh, 'scuse me, I...
Oh, uh, right, um...
Never mind, I just,
I'll go back...
No, it's, it's cool.
I'm ready to go, Jake.
Um...
thanks for all the games, Kid.
(laughs)
Anytime.
Here.
Thanks.
(chatter)
I'm gonna get you.
Dah!
Watch out.
Yah!
Wow.
Holy cow.
Yeah, holy cow.
So what do you think?
I think everybody needs to
get back to the classroom,
'cause recess is over.
Ohh...
Come on.
(school bell ringing)
Everybody inside.
What's goin' on here?
So you're a teacher?
Substitute.
Oh, this is your fall back.
What?
Your fall back job.
Look, it's cool, I had one, too,
I used to deliver mail, little
blue shorts, running around all
over the place...
Kid, what are you doing here?
Cates wanted your car
brought over.
He's got you scheduled for some
track time tomorrow and thought
that, uh, you two should
get acquainted.
This is my car.
Well, it's got your name
on it, doesn't it?
Look, if this is your way
of trying to get me into bed
or out of my clothes I...
(laughing)
Oh, okay.
Um, wow, uh, let's, let's go
back in the classroom.
Ohh...
Back in the classroom now!
(chuckling)
There's a world outside
You can't outrun
Look back now
At how far you've come
You can turn back
Turn back
This feeling
When you find your dream
You'll find your heart
The finish line
Is where you'll start
You can turn back
Turn back
You're not dreaming
Is this real and now
So start believing
One more mile
Is all you're needing
You can't back down
There's Still so much
To prove
But nothing's left
To lose
Won't be like racin'
at Keystone.
(engine revving)
Now that's pretty.
She's beautiful.
Ready to take her
for a test drive?
Absolutely.
Where can I change?
Right this way.
Is this... Go check it out.
I got it.
(door closing)
(gasps)
Whoo-hoo!
(laughing)
This is your pit crew.
The guy with the blue coveralls,
best spotter in North Carolina.
And that there's Andy Davis,
AKA Crash.
I know Crash.
He was crew chief for my dad
when I was ten.
Guy with the goatee,
that's your lead mechanic.
Jake's my lead mechanic.
You haven't even sat in the
seat yet and you're
makin' demands?
He's been with me
from the start.
Kylie, your career started
the day I gave you a shot
at bein' on the Cates team.
You drive, I do everything else.
Do I make myself clear?
I'll find a spot for Jake.
Okay, take it easy.
Hurry up, Jake.
Check everything out, get to
know the car, just promise me,
don't go all out, all right?
Maybe I would, you know
actually, it all depends...
Jake, Jake...
Hey!
Just go fix a car or something.
Yeah.
Andy, I'm Kylie.
Crash.
You look just like your mother.
Get in the car.
And how's your dad?
Owes me a hundred bucks.
I haven't heard from him since
he moved out of Charlotte.
You gonna get in the car?
Oh.
In the last 30 seconds
I would've won any race you
and I might of run.
Because now I'm inside your
head, you're wonderin',
"How did he know my mother,
does he like my dad,
does he like me?"
Rule number one, from the time
you get suited up, to the time
you get into that seat,
you don't talk to anyone,
look at anyone,
listen to anyone except me.
Just you, me and the car,
got it?
Um-hum.
Now let's see if you know
how to drive.
(tires squealing)
(tires screeching)
Don't turn any hard laps until
those tires come to pressure.
You wanna heat up those tires
gradually.
They'll warm up.
Let's do a few cold laps,
take a nice, easy trip through
the lanes.
Get a feel for the track,
take your time, we got all day.
I'm not really known
for takin' my time.
I heard that.
You attract the flies
with the sugar.
Well, looky here.
(chuckles)
Hm-hmm.
On the gauges.
What's a gauge?
Ha, ha, very funny.
How's your oil temp lookin'?
It's fine.
Can we do some hot laps now?
All right, you feel
comfortable out there?
Balance of the car feel good?
Like a cat in the sunshine.
Okay, keep it smooth.
This car's gonna be awesome,
I love it.
Lots of play.
(tires squealing)
You're running it too hard
into the corner.
I wanna see what she can do.
Tell me how's that balance feel?
Feels great, good to go.
She got too much rear brake.
No, let her make a mistake.
Watch this.
Okay, Kylie, you take it away.
Let's run some hot laps
and see how it goes.
You sure you're ready?
Brake balance feel good?
Born ready.
(engine roaring)
(tires screeching)
You should have known, Kylie,
too much rear brake bias makes
you spin out.
(engine idling)
Okay, bring it in,
we're done here.
(tires squealing)
(brakes screeching)
Let's check this out.
Get the lap time.
Crash?
Crash, look...
Put a rounder wedge in it.
I know it got a little away
from me but next Saturday...
You're not racin' Saturday.
Because of one little screw-up.
Rule number two,
the best drivers race.
Everybody else stays home.
Until I say so, you stay home.
(scoffs)
Rule number three,
I'm sick of your rules.
Lawn needs work.
I'll get right on that.
What you doin' here, Al?
Just in town meetin' sponsors.
Kylie's not ready.
She thinks she is.
Well, you have to talk her
out of it.
Who are you to drop in out of
nowhere after two years and tell
me what to do?
You are the one supposed to
be lookin' after her.
No-no, you're the one who's
supposed to be lookin' after
her, you're the daddy.
I'm just the aunt.
I didn't do this for you
by the way, I did it for Kylie.
You got somethin' to tell her,
tell her yourself.
I'm tired of bein'
the go-between.
Well then, you tell her
to return my calls.
Please.
Hey, you okay?
I heard Cates cut you.
I have walked away from every
wreck I been in.
This ain't any different.
Come back soon.
(whistling)
So how do you think
he got the name Crash?
Hm, it's either a ticking
time bomb or an accident waiting
to happen.
Hey, look who it is.
Great, just when my day
couldn't get any worse.
Why aren't you ever at home?
How come you're in Charlotte?
Just in town for a couple of
weeks meetin' sponsors.
Hi, Mr. Shines.
Get me a beer, will ya, Jake?
Yeah, sure thing.
Don't.
(sighing)
Yeah.
Don't order him around.
I asked for a beer.
He's not a bartender,
and you didn't ask for anything,
you told him.
Are we gonna argue over
a bottle of beer?
What do you want?
Kylie, Cates...
Cates, is giving me a shot
at your seat.
Bad for you, good for me.
What do you say we play
a few racks?
Loser buys a round,
unless you're afraid.
Hmm.
I'll wrack 'em.
Hey, guys.
Oh, Mr. Franklin.
Have you seen uh, Al Shines?
Um...
They told me he was here.
Oh, great.
Oh, this should be interesting.
I was at the track today.
You always wanted me to take
an interest.
A little late for that,
don't ya think?
Give me a break.
Hey.
I've given you dozens.
Fourth grade, I had my appendix
out, you were at Talladega.
Fifth grade, Mark French broke
my heart, you were at Gateway.
Nice.
Seventh grade, Grandma died,
you couldn't make it to the
funeral.
Daytona.
And while I was so
disinterested, I was paying for
your braces, your clothing,
your college...
Second grade, Bristol 500.
Mom got sick.
Now you listen to me.
Look.
You just be careful of Cates.
You really are that desperate.
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
He's like a red phone
Yeah, come on get ready
Bring it all around
Conversation on
On the life unsettling
I've gotta it in my head
So you better get ready
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
(gasps)
Hey
Hey, go, go, go
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
(cheering )
Sound the alarm
Sound the alarm
Ready to go
Yeah!
Oh!
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
I said, sound the alarm
(engine revving)
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
S-o-u-n-d the a-l-a-r-m
Yeah
(chatter)
You're not ready.
(groaning)
No.
(cheering)
(chuckling)
Whoa, slow down, Kyles.
Ugh, I'm such an idiot,
I let him get to me every time.
Well, what'd he say?
What do you think?
I don't know,
that you're not ready?
I'm ready.
I've never been more ready
in my whole life.
I agree.
Then why are you taking
his side?
'Cause you're acting
like a baby.
No, I'm not.
Yes, you are.
No, I'm not!
You're still that little
Kylie sitting on Amy's front
porch waiting for Daddy's
approval, only today there's no
porch, it was a pool game.
La-la-la...
And until you admit that
to yourself, you're gonna keep
reliving little dramas like the
one you had just now.
Don't be mad, come on.
I'm not.
Where are you going?
Kylie, come on.
(tires squeal)
(fans cheering)
Hey.
Where you going?
To watch tapes.
Waste of time.
For you.
Look, you're not gonna learn
to drive by watching TV.
It's instinct,
you drive from your gut.
Tell me something my father
hasn't told me a million times.
Smart man, your pop.
I love you, Kid!
I love you!
Honey, your fans are calling.
Wait.
Have dinner with me at my hotel.
Nope.
Why not?
Look, Kid, you're charming
and sexy, smarter
than you should be.
You love the hunt, and yet,
get bored of the conquest.
Once you've had a woman, you've
already moved onto the next.
Wow.
Oh, I'm not done, your ego.
Size of the Grand Canyon.
First time I beat you,
you'll resent me.
Oh, that's right, see it's cute
to be all flirty with me now
when I'm just the girl, but when
I'm competition it'll just be
like askin' out one of the boys.
(sighing)
(mock sighing)
You got it all
figured out, don't you?
I speak from years
of experience.
No room for error?
No.
Wow, it must be hard being
right all the time.
You have no idea.
Hmm...
Hm, 'scuse me.
Thanks.
It's just dinner.
With a great example of
textbook driving, in the last
lap he takes the checkered flag
and Al Shines is the winner
of the 1984 Daytona 500!
(door opens)
You really do look just
like her.
Oh.
I don't know how that got
in there.
I put it in.
Think what you want about him.
Al's one of the all-time greats.
He's in you, Kylie, so's Susan.
With her guts and his talent,
you could be unstoppable.
Her guts?
I never saw anyone go through
what she did, tryin' to stay
alive.
Never saw anyone go through
what Al did,
watching her die.
(engines rumbling)
(clears throat)
Last Saturday's race.
The one I wasn't in?
I want you to watch Kid Walker.
What am I looking for?
Bad habits, weak points,
blind spots.
What are they?
Figure it out.
So Dynotech is in,
and I'm fully confident by the
end of next week, I'll have
at least two more sponsors.
That sounds good, Al.
Real good.
Don't ya all think so?
And what about you, Jimmy?
You know how it is.
No, I don't.
Why don't you tell me?
It's hard startin' a new team.
Making it a great opportunity
for anybody coming on board now.
We look for pedigree.
Like my 20-plus cups?
Like Cates.
Who I raced for with your
name plastered all over me.
And now suddenly I'm not
pedigree enough, but the Kid is?
(phone ringing)
Look, why don't you let me take
you all out to lunch, I'll buy
you some drinks and we'll uh,
we'll just talk about it.
Maybe some other time.
Thanks for comin' by, Al.
Good luck, and uh, call me
if anyone else comes on board.
What?
Are you kidding me?
(pit crew laughing)
Ha, ha, ha, okay, very funny.
Yeah, that's great.
Where's my stuff?
I have to be on the track
in ten minutes.
Talk to Evans.
He's your sparring partner.
Nice, you're gonna look
hot in pink.
(laughing)
See you around, Cinderella.
Come on, give me my stuff back.
I'll see you out there.
Hey, don't forget
your high heels.
Oh, very funny.
Check this out.
No problem.
(wolf whistle)
Nice suit, Kylie.
Whoo!
You can't drive in that.
Look, Kyles, if you crash
you'll go up like a match.
I don't crash, right, Crash?
(laughing)
Hey, Evans, come here, one sec.
Back me up.
Yeah.
It's so weird, you have like,
um, dude, you have blood on you.
Hey, hey, hey, what the hell
is goin' on?
I'm stealin' your suit.
(crew laughing)
Hey, hey, hey, what the hell
is goin' on?
I'm stealin' your suit.
(crew laughing)
What, no sponsors?
Cates own that, too?
Whoa, hey, hey.
I'll see you on the track.
Nice.
Kylie.
(tires squealing)
(engines revving)
Come on, baby, catch me
if you can, prom queen.
I thought this was a practice.
This is a practice,
you practice against Evans,
not the club.
Come on, go, come on!
Run your own race.
Don't let him drive your car.
Come on, let's see what you
got, sweetie.
Take it easy.
What the...
Come on, girl.
That all you got?
Come on, go!
Kylie, way to go!
Here it comes, rookie.
Ugh!
What the hell was that?
Whoo-hoo-hoo, I've seen
hound dogs quicker than you.
Stay focused.
He does it again
I'm gonna dump him.
He's bumpin' you
'cause he's mad.
Are you mad?
Yeah, I'm mad.
No, you're not.
Take a deep breath, you stay in
the groove.
Who's got the better car?
I've got the better car, Crash.
Yeah, you do.
Trust your car.
Hit your marks.
Run your lines.
Keep going.
Stick with the game plan.
I'm comin' up now, rookie.
(tires squeak)
White flag, one more lap.
Push it hard now,
right in the groove.
Right in the groove.
You got him!
Nice!
Checkered flag,
checkered flag, Shines!
Whoo!
Whoo!
Hey, Evans, who's the pretty
prom queen now, huh, baby?
Looking good.
Whoo!
(cheering)
You were amazing.
You were amazing.
(laughing)
Good driving.
Nice racing, rookie.
I wouldn't be so cocky, junior.
This is just a workout.
You wait until she's in
Saturday's race against you.
Wait, this Saturday?
This Saturday, at Riverside.
(screaming)
Whoo-hoo!
(laughing)
You still wanna have
dinner with me?
Huh, huh?
(chatter)
(phone ringing)
Vodka Tonic please.
Thirsty?
Wow.
You look amazing.
It's a dress.
I know it's a dress.
It's what you do to it that's
so impressive.
Hmm, as impressive as what
I did to Evans on the track?
Evans is a sparring partner.
He's supposed to lose.
You know there's...
You know what,
I'm sorry, let's not do that.
Let's just for like one night
not talk about racing.
Okay.
So do you, uh... Um...
Is Kid your real name?
(laughing)
Actually, it's uh,
it's Bobby Joe.
No... seriously?
Yeah.
Okay.
Your table is ready.
When I was in fourth grade...
Oh, the geography part of
my brain doesn't function.
I mean, I graduated magna cum.
I had a 4.0 and I couldn't tell
you where Idaho is on a map.
Ahh... oh.
Can I ask you a question?
No.
How many women are you
sleeping with?
At this very moment?
Just tell me.
Why?
I don't usually do this.
Eat?
Let myself get off
balance like this.
See, that's your problem.
Why does everybody keep
telling me what my problem is?
It's that you get so emotional.
You would never ever say that
to a guy.
I would if he was.
Listen, if you don't leave your
feelings off the track, you're
never gonna get what you want.
And do you know what you want?
(glasses clinking)
(laughing)
No.
I'm not sleepin' with anyone.
Yet.
(door lock beeping)
(laughing)
How do you like me now, Kid?
That's awesome.
(elevator dinging)
So we'll have breakfast there.
Absolutely.
You always wear that.
Hmm...
it was my mother's.
When I was, um, seven she died
of ovarian cancer.
That's tough.
You remember her much?
Chanel No. 5...
She always wore Chanel No. 5,
and she hummed all the time
and her hands...
she had beautiful,
graceful hands.
Are you an only child?
Al always wanted a son but
I mean, they tried I'm sure.
So what was Al like growin' up?
I wouldn't know.
He left me with my aunt
when I was ten and
Jake was the kid next door.
They became my family.
I don't get it, if you hate
your dad so much...
I don't hate my dad.
You'd think you'd hate racing.
I don't hate my dad.
Are you kidding?
I-I worshipped him.
Al Shines, the greatest racer in
the country and he was my dad.
He taught me to drive
when I was eight,
go-carts then midgets.
He'd go on the road at first and
come back and for the first few
days he was home, I'd pretend
that racing was the greatest
thing in the world
and then one day
it was the greatest thing
and he was gone.
Can we change the subject?
Do you wanna know what we
call my dad?
What's that?
The Chief.
The Chief?
The Chief.
Let's see who the chief
really is.
With 25 laps to go and 125
on the board,
things are really heatin' up.
Quite a battle has developed
between Shines and Walker
in Riverside.
Number 72, MacKay is holding
the lead by a hair.
Kylie!
This is Al Shines' daughter
in car 33 and it looks
like her hall of fame father
must've shown her a move
or two.
I'm not too sure this is how
he'd do it though, Boomer.
It's pretty aggressive and
she's almost reckless.
Wow, she's passing 66
and 32 Scott Allen on the
high side.
41, Walker is not
letting her get away.
What the...
Does she think we're at the
amusement park?
Little bites, little bites.
Take it easy, Kylie,
you're missing your mark.
You've got lots more laps
to do that.
Are you writing the check for
these or is Cates?
Kylie Shines is takin' some
pretty big chances, Wells and
Braniff, one shot.
Whoa, she's passing 'em, Shines
goes up aggressively to third
position with number 41 Walker
still right behind her.
I can tell you I did not expect
this kind of show of the rookie
driver Kylie Shines today,
she is driving to win.
Whoo.
You're over-driving.
Car's should have more forward
bite.
I know what I'm doing.
Be smart, that's the key.
Be smart.
Fast, Crash.
I think you mean fast.
I found a lane that works
for me but it's going a little
loose in the corners.
You got nothin', Shines.
(engines roaring)
Walker passes Shines on the
outside.
Coming into the straightaway...
Whoo!
See ya!
And that moves him into third
behind 44 Alexander
and 91 MacKay.
With 196 laps completed
the leaders will have
to come in for a splash and go,
to make it to the finish line.
Splash and go, splash and
go, you got that, boys?
A pound in the left front, let's
top it up, let's top it up.
Shines is tryin' to splash
and go, we'll get you
out first.
Okay.
Let's see how fast the crews
can get the job done for their
drivers, see who can make time
out there.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
Come on, come on!
Get me out.
Jake, come on, you're
slowin' me down.
You use that car up and
she'll be all done before the
white flag.
Give me a sign that you're
hearin' me.
Come on.
Get out of my way.
(tires squealing)
(engine roars)
Uh oh, what happened there?
Whoa.
Whoa, I think she pulled out
around Walker on the pit road
and that's a bit of a no-no,
folks.
What was that?
I thought these two were on
the same team.
You better get in that race
or she's gonna win.
Relax.
I'm just havin' some fun
with her.
With just four laps to go,
Walker catches up with Shines.
And Shines is goin' for broke
passing both Alexander and
MacKay for the lead.
With Walker dropping right
behind her into second place.
Later.
Number 33 in the lead
is drivin' like his hair,
I'm sorry, her hair's on fire.
I know what you mean, Boomer.
When'd she get to be that good.
Come on, Kylie!
Walker set up inside this
track and you know he's all
she can see in her mirrors
right now.
Come on rookie, show me what
you got.
He's right there, stay cool.
I see him.
I don't know if Shines is
used to this kind of driving.
41 will just not leave
her alone.
Kid is pressuring her.
Trying to psych Kylie out.
And he's been in her mirror
for the last three laps now,
trying to break her focus.
Welcome to racing.
(laughing)
I can't get away from him.
Run your own race,
the car will follow.
(cheering)
And Walker keeps draftin'
and trying to move Kylie off the
track and steal this win.
You're two tenths tighter
on the clock, man, that's where
you're gonna get her.
He's not even trying to pass.
Drafting.
The leaders are comin' up on
the final lap, this is really
gonna be a contest between
Kylie Shines and Kid Walker.
White flag, Kylie.
One more lap to go, Kid.
White flag, it's on.
She's gonna mess up
at the corner.
Going into three, fill up
her mirror real good.
Spook her and she'll
over-drive and get mad
then drive right under her.
Whoo!
Keep your focus.
Don't let him make you make
a mistake.
Whoo-woo, yee-haw!
Faster.
This isn't working.
Calm down, Shines.
Stay cool.
Faster.
Down the straightaway Shines
and Walker, nose to tail for the
checkered flag.
She's got him.
No, she doesn't.
He's got her.
Focus, take this next turn easy.
I'm gonna get him here.
Back off.
No.
Don't over-drive that car.
I can do it.
Back off!
(tires squealing)
Shines, that's about
all you wrote.
No!
Oh, ho, ho, ho, no!
She must've tapped those
brakes too hard, she overshot
the corner.
One, two and three it's
Walker, MacKay and Alexander and
Shines comin' in number four.
And Walker gets the checkered
flag.
Oh, baby.
Yeah.
Not today, sweetheart!
Whoo, whoo!
Predictable.
How'd you know that
was gonna happen?
Because all rookies no matter
how good, are the same.
How?
They never listen.
Ugh, she has to be crushed,
you gotta wonder if she was
mentally ready to have Walker
set up in her mirrors like that.
Damn.
I know you're not ignoring me.
Are you deaf, when I tell you to
back off, back off!
How am I supposed to win
sitting back?
Hey Kylie, most important
rule, we race here.
If you're gonna make it onto
Cates' team you're gonna
listen to me!
'Cause you don't know what the
hell you're doin' out there!
You fell for every stupid move
Walker sent your way.
He made you run his race,
not your own.
I was in the race all day!
You were never in the race.
I was in the front!
How many cars crossed the
finish line ahead of you?
I know, but next week
I'm gonna do...
No, there is no next week,
till you learn to listen to me,
you're going nowhere.
I'm done with you.
...your rules!
I don't need this.
Kylie, come on.
I quit.
You don't mean that.
Oh, yes, I do.
Kylie.
(chatter)
Kylie?
Are you okay?
Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.
Oh.
Um, could I see you before
you head home today?
Sure.
Okay, thank you.
(school bell ringing)
(knocking on door)
Kylie?
Hi, Miss Simon.
Hi.
I think I have some good news
for you.
Oh?
We have a long term sub
position that's just opened up.
Oh, how long term?
Well, at least until the end
of the school year,
perhaps permanently.
Uh, bad timing?
Uh, no.
Actually, you have no idea how
great your timing is.
Good.
Because I think this will be
a wonderful opportunity for you.
The kids just adore you and you
can be with them every day,
year after year and then some
day if you're lucky you'll be
teaching their children until...
What?
What?
You can't be a mailman and race.
Do you know what I mean?
No, not really.
I'm sorry.
I...
I think you're great Miss Simon
and I love the children and...
it's just... it's not what
I'm meant to do.
I'm not... I'm not a teacher.
I race cars.
Hey.
(chuckling)
So what, are you giving me the
silent treatment?
I'm grounded
and it's your fault.
Ha-ha!
My fault?
I would've won the race
if you hadn't pulled that crap.
Listen, I beat every other
driver out there.
Do you hear any of them saying
it's my fault that they lost?
No.
So stop being such a girl.
Hello.
Boobs.
Girl.
Do you use 'em to drive with?
(laughs)
You're an idiot.
(chuckling)
How can you believe
That you're
The only one
What kind of mark
Will you leave
When it's all
Said and done
In a world of strangers
Passing by
They'll stop and smile
They'll ask you why
So close and yet
So far away
Live out loud
Don't be afraid
To let 'em see you cry
Live out loud
Don't even wait
To let them see you cry
Oh
(ringtone plays)
Hey, it's Kid Walker.
Answer your phone, do it.
Do it now.
Hey jerk, answer your phone.
(beep)
Hello?
Yeah, thanks dude.
Hey, wake up.
Check this out.
(groaning)
(TV turns on)
Um, seriously?
At Virginia yesterday,
Kid Walker scored a nail biting
win over a pack of challengers.
Nice.
Kid may have won the day and
remains the odds on favorite
to take that empty slot
on Cates Racing but it was
Kylie Shines that'll be talked
about tomorrow.
What?
It was Shines, the rookie and
the daughter of a legend who
electrified the crowd.
Kylie's Corner seemed more
than satisfied with her fourth
place finish.
Could it be that we are
seeing the birth of another
great dynasty.
Oh, that's amazing.
(squealing)
(chuckling)
(laughing)
That's crazy.
(phone dialing)
Hey, it's me.
Yeah, I watched but they didn't
show the interview.
Are you serious?
Yeah, she's right here.
My agent wants to talk to you.
Cates called him.
Really?
Hello?
Hi, no, I'm good, thank you.
Very exciting.
Um yes, no, I, I, I'm sorry.
I can definitely do lunch.
That's great.
Thank you.
Lunch.
It's a train wreck.
Women don't wanna see Kid
with Kylie.
Wow.
Hell, they don't wanna see
him with any other woman.
So much for your super couple.
Kylie tested pretty hot
though, men responded to her.
I need women.
Women are the purchasing power.
Women get me new sponsors.
Women do not respond to other
women who are hot.
Okay, all right.
So, uh, what about a whole
different angle?
What about a father-daughter
match, huh?
Go on.
Uh, uh, left behind after her
mother died, Kylie Shines grew
up not knowing her father,
until now,
when father and daughter
meet for the first time
on the track.
This is not about the trophy,
this is personal.
Or some crap like that.
Women would like that.
Why would Al do it?
Well, he's starting his own
team, right?
Yeah, so?
You can't have a team
without sponsors.
And you can't have a sponsor
without heat.
Racing his own daughter.
Now that's heat.
Oh, oh, here we go
Ooh, yeah
Ooh, ooh
Yeow
What's this all about, Robin?
What do you think about
a race of the generations?
Kid Walker?
You're talkin' about me
and Kid Walker?
Racin' for a spot on this team?
You think Kid is a no talent
poster boy.
I think he's the real deal.
This way we prove it once
and for all.
I don't have anything
left to prove.
Is that so, Al?
You have no money, no car.
Your career's takin'
a trajectory straight
into the pits.
At the very least the heat off
this could be just what you need
to start your own Team Shines.
I'm not interested.
Still wanna show you somethin'.
What's that?
Our latest model.
Hey, Julie can you just
double check our readings,
please?
Thank you.
(clicking)
That's beautiful.
I love it.
Kid, roll your shoulder up just
a little tiny bit, okay?
Yep, beautiful.
Great.
(mimicking barking)
(laughing)
Beautiful.
Yeah, yes, fabulous.
I love it.
Ha, ha, yes.
I love that.
Gorgeous, that's terrific.
(chuckling)
Thank you so much.
We got everything that we need.
We got more than we need.
Where's Kylie?
She should be ready by now.
She's what, shy?
Okay, next set-up guys.
(wolf whistle)
Kylie.
Where do you want me?
Right over here,
you look incredible.
You look amazing,
how do you feel?
Feel comfortable?
You okay?
This is really strange for me.
I'm just gonna get you to try
and open up your shirt
just a little bit,
are you comfortable with that?
Just...
Um, no.
Not really.
Hey, you know what?
Will you give us a second?
Sure.
Hey, you really do look amazing.
Smile, relax, have fun,
this is easy.
Maybe for you.
Okay?
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah, she's ready.
(giggling)
Okay, let's get started then.
Okay, I'm just gonna
get you to...
Can I get the fan on?
All right, here we go.
Sexy.
That's perfect, perfect.
Keep workin' it.
Gorgeous, beautiful.
Get comfortable there.
Perfect, that's beautiful.
Hold it right there.
Yeah, give me some
of that attitude.
Loving it.
(camera clicking)
Perfect.
Perfect.
Hot.
(laughing)
Stop, stop making her laugh.
Yeah, beautiful...
What the hell is this?
It's a poster, Al.
Motorheads'll love it.
This is what you meant by
latest model?
(laughing)
Mr. Shines, it's an honor.
This race isn't about
Kid Walker, is it?
What race are we talkin' about?
A race of the generations.
That is awesome.
A Kid Walker,
Al Shines showdown?
(whistling)
God, you're just as thick
as I thought you were.
It's not just a race between
you and me.
It's all three of you.
And Al, it's great publicity.
I warned you, Kylie.
You said I wasn't ready.
Keep taking pictures.
And you're not.
You have no idea how to deal
with the Cates of this world.
This has nothing to do
with racing.
He's pimping you.
I'm here because
I'm a good driver.
You're here because your...
looks marginally better
than the Kid.
Hey, Al.
Don't do that.
Hey, Kid.
Father, daughter.
Then act like it.
Oh...
Baby, you don't need to help.
Baby?
Did you just call him, baby?
Wow, okay.
You can't handle it, can you?
I'm moving up while you're
flaming out.
You know why you won't race me?
'Cause you're afraid
I'll beat you.
Hey, don't push me.
You think you still got it,
old man?
Prove it, prove that all those
years you spent on the circuit
building the great Al Shines
legend are worth something.
Race me.
Thanks for the ride.
You go talk to Al.
I want that race.
You need that race.
Put me in Tennessee on Saturday.
Tennessee.
He won't go head to head
against me until I'm something
worth beating.
You put me in that race,
I'll be that something.
Welcome to the Tennessee
Motor Speedway for the 22nd
annual Tennessee 200!
It's a hot, hot, hot, hot day
today.
That will be a definite factor
in today's race.
These drivers are gonna fight
for every little bit of traction
they can get out there.
They're going to cook like
burgers on a barbecue
in those tin boxes.
(engines roaring)
Shines can't have been happy
with her starting position
today.
Yeah, it's a lot easier to be
Kid Walker who qualified number
one and is starting out in
pole position.
He's got the inside track,
all right, so Kylie's got a lot
of work to do if she's gonna
catch him, and she's got
a lot on her mind.
And in fact her usual crew
chief Crash Davis,
isn't in the pit today.
Come on, Kylie, let's go,
now let's go, 'kay let's go.
Just take your time, work your
way through the field towards
the Kid, he's still your
leader, now, come on.
Kylie is movin' up pace,
passing number 17, Woods.
Shines looks like an
entirely different racer than
when we saw her last week
at Riverside.
She's goin' into the third
turn, and smartly overtakin'
Roche in car 66.
She's seven and over halfway
Shines passes number 44 Beatty.
She's givin' the crowd
everything they'd hoped for.
That's right Boomer,
a faceoff between Kylie Shines
and the phenom, Kid Walker.
And Shines is passin' 99 now
and moving into second place.
Kid, check your mirror.
33 is right on your tail.
And Kylie Shines,
number 33 is now in second
place, behind Kid Walker,
number 41.
(cheering)
(engines roaring)
Look who learned how to drive.
All right, if it's a race
you want, it's a race
you're gonna get.
Kylie, keep it tight now,
you're doin' great, Kylie,
you're doin' great.
Now you're right on him,
keep the heat on.
Uh-oh...
he's in the wall.
And there's flames comin' out
of that car.
What a mess out there in front
of Walker and Shines.
72 Cooper's drivin'
through that debris but he keeps
goin' I, I think Cooper's right
in front of that...
and headed up the wall.
There's the yellow flag,
Walker and Shines are headed
for the pits.
Everybody go, go, go.
Kylie, you're doing great.
Let's go, let's go,
we're fallin' behind.
Get him out there, come on,
get him out there.
I think 72 Cooper has
sustained some damage drivin'
past that wreck.
Let's take a look in the pit.
Now, you've gotta watch when
you take it down low.
Protect the bottom.
What the hell is she doing?
I can't get her off of my tail.
They're patching up his front
end with what looks like duct
tape and by golly...
Go!
All right, good.
Let's go, guys, come on,
let's go.
(tires screeching)
(engines roaring)
So that's how it's gonna
be, huh?
You gotta wonder if it's
smart for his crew to put that
car back out there.
I mean, they must believe that
patch job is gonna hold up
through the rest of the race.
All right, the track is clear
and green, green, green, we're
back to racing in Tennessee.
Walker back in the track and
Kylie Shines behind him.
We got a real race here, folks,
with 21 laps to go.
Keep hitting your marks, Kid.
Stay outta your mirror,
stay outta your mirror.
He's got Shines right on his
tail, she's doin' to him what he
did to her last week.
Tit for tat.
Did you actually say that on
ABC Family?
No, zig for zag?
Better.
Come on, Kylie!
Walker and Shines are comin'
up on 72 Cooper,
who is a lap down
after his contact with the wall.
Oh, Cooper's bumper is
fallin' off on the track.
Kid look for some debris,
it's on a turn comin' up.
What turn?
We're swerving.
Kylie, watch your fender
on the corner, Kylie.
Say it again.
Turn three, kid, turn three.
Whoa!
(tires screeching)
Oh!
Shines ran over some of that
debris.
She's slowin' with some
kinda damage.
The fender of 72 must've
gotten up into an oil line,
that windshield is just covered
in grease.
I have no idea how she's
drivin' that race car.
Shows a lot of maturity
on Shines part.
You gotta know that she's got
a heartache right now, knowing
that she was the car to beat.
Well, she's gonna be back.
(crowd groans)
Checkered flag, here we go.
You got lucky this time, Kid.
Kid Walker for the first
place...
Kyl.
Uh... Ha!
Kyles, are you okay?
My wrist.
What the hell happened to you?
It was my fault.
How's that?
I-I-I put a new oil line in
at the last minute,
and didn't get the shield
to protect it back on.
That's bush league!
I'm sorry, it won't happen
again, Mr. Cates.
You're damn right it won't
because you're fired!
What?
Hold on, it was a mistake.
Mistake?
Do you know how much money you
and your daddy's mistakes
cost me?
I won't have some hayseed
mechanic screwin' up
the damn cars!
And if you're smart,
you won't either.
I'll go clean my tools
out of the trailer.
You're damn right, you will.
(door opens, closes)
Wow, you feelin' sorry
for yourself?
I can't even do the whole
eating while depressed thing.
Pass me the chips.
(sighs)
I can't win for losing.
Kid was supposed to come by
but he never called,
I saved the car but lost Jake.
(doorbell ringing)
Maybe that's Kid.
Put that ice cream away
before it melts.
You ran a good race today.
I'm on my way to meet Kid.
(clearing throat)
Well, I'm not goin' anywhere,
Kylie, I'm... I'm here to stay.
Do you want a rocking chair?
One of us has to
make the first move.
You qualified first.
All right.
I'm tired of us being angry
at each other all the time.
I agree.
If you wanna race, that's fine,
but it's just us,
away from the, uh...
the crowds, the publicity
machine, away from Cates.
And how do you suggest
we do that?
You racing in that old thing?
Well, I've been keepin' her
up all these years, now it's
time to see if she can
still cut it.
Fine, fire up
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
(engine starts cold)
(revving)
Look Kylie, look honey.
It's daddy, look!
Starting is Al Shines!
Too loud!
Wave to Daddy, Kylie.
Wish Daddy luck.
Hi, Daddy!
He doesn't see me, Mommy,
he doesn't see me.
He will, baby, he'll see you.
He'll see you.
(cuts engine off)
What?
You never saw me.
You still don't.
I'm not stupid, I know what
they're all saying.
She's only here 'cause
she's a girl or she's
Al Shines' daughter.
I'm a damn good driver.
I don't need to race you on an
empty track in the dark
with antique cars.
You wanna show me respect?
Then show up, two weeks.
Hey.
(shower running)
Kylie, what are you
doin' here?
I'm sorry, I'm nervous about
the press conference and...
Can we talk about this later?
Baby, it's important.
Okay, I'll meet you
downstairs in the bar.
The bar?
Is that the champagne, Kid?
(sighing)
Wow.
(exhaling)
Is that another sister,
Kid?
It's not like that.
This goes back a long time.
How long is long?
Long enough that you were
hooking up with her when you
were sleeping with me?
Whoo, okay, just go back to bed.
Kylie, hey.
I'm sorry but you knew
what this was.
What?
Charity event, great publicity.
It wasn't just great
publicity for me, it was great
publicity for you, too.
Yeah, it was great for me.
Thanks for the ride.
See you at the press conference.
(cheering)
At the end of one of the most
excitin' preseason's in racin'
history, I'm proud to announce
a unique charity event.
The event will feature two of
the most exciting up and comers
lighting up the race car world,
Kid Walker and Kylie Shines!
(cheering)
How does it feel to be in the
race of the sexes?
You know honestly,
I think it's amazing.
Now, no matter what happens in
this race, whether she wins or
loses, Kylie Shines is a credit
to women everywhere and the
future of female racing.
Thanks Kid, for that
inspiring speech but the last
time I looked under the hood of
a car, they didn't have sexes.
(crowd laughing)
Thank you.
I would like to make
one correction.
This isn't just gonna be
a race of the sexes.
There will be a third driver.
Ladies and gentlemen,
racing legend Al Shines!
(cheering and applause)
(cameras clicking)
A week from now, racing will
match up, woman against man,
youth versus experience,
legend versus superstar,
and father versus daughter.
I've still got that spot
on the team, right?
Let's just see what happens
on Saturday.
We had a deal.
Well, deals change.
You happy now?
May the best man win.
Jake, where were you?
I thought you were gonna be at
the press conference.
Hey, what's goin' on?
Got a job with the Forlani
crew in Portland.
You can't leave, not now.
Here's the thing Kyles,
I actually can.
But what about the... I heard,
the race of the generations.
You have to be there.
Where were you when Cates
was firing me?
Oh, right, you were standing
right there.
I know, I'm sorry but
I promise it won't happen again,
Jake, I need you.
Just not the same way that
I need you.
God, Kylie you've known how
I felt about you since
the sixth grade.
You've known I wanted more than
friendship, and you've
taken advantage of that.
Jake, don't...
No, I'm finally okay with it.
You, me, we'd never work out,
right?
We're just too close to be
that close.
It's my problem, it's not yours,
but I just can't be
around you right now.
I mean, come on, we're good
luck for each other...
Kyles.
You're a good racer, maybe even
a great racer but you need to
start looking to yourself.
You don't need me to bring you
good luck.
You don't need Kid to do
whatever he does for you,
and you sure as hell don't
need your dad to approve.
You just need to drive.
Fast, drive fast, that's all.
(tires screeching)
Well, here it is, race fans,
a very unusual challenge match,
not on any schedule but with
more interest than many of the
cup finals.
It's Shines versus Shines versus
Walker, battling it out for a
place at the big show.
Winner gets to ride in the Robin
Cates racing team, losers go
home and try again next
preseason.
Robin Cates has generously
donated half a million dollars
from Cates Industries and his
team sponsors are matchin' that.
One million dollars to the
Cates' Family Kids Foundation.
First of all, I wanna thank
Mr. Cates and our sponsors for
letting me participate in
today's race, I mean any time
you have a chance to race
against a legend like Al Shines,
growing up he was one of my
heroes and then to also be able
to race against his daughter
Kylie, who I've gotten to know
pretty well, on and off the
track, I gotta say, aggressive
driver, real aggressive racer,
just kind of an aggressive
person overall.
So I think today it's gonna be
really interesting.
But other than that, let's be
honest, the sun is shining, the
stands are packed and this is
the dream, what more could you
ask for, you know?
Crash?
What are you doing here?
Makin' sure you don't kill
yourself.
You stickin' around
for the race?
Thought I might.
Unless you want Jonesy as your
crew chief.
No, no.
I want you to stay.
Next time I'll listen to you.
Next time, there won't be
a next time if you don't.
You got that shield on tight?
Yes, sir.
Hey, Kyles, uh, you know,
Portland can wait a day.
I had to see this one, I've
worked too damn hard to watch
this from the stands.
You worked, huh?
Look, I know you don't
need it but... good luck.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
(laughing)
Let's go.
Let's do it.
Will the drivers please take
their positions on the track.
(engines roaring)
Now this is somethin' we don't
see every day.
A standin' start.
Three race cars on a half
mile track.
Shines senior has been on the
sidelines since his last
crack-up.
And Shines junior has had
a few chances to beat
Kid Walker but so far her cup
has come up empty.
Now Kid will most likely have
an advantage over Shines and
Shines in this portion
of the race track.
Well, at Shines age, my three
legged golden retriever has an
advantage over him on foot.
Ladies and gentlemen, please
welcome the main sponsor of
today's event, Robin Cates.
(cheers and applause)
Welcome, North Carolina,
happy race day!
We're bringing you a race
featuring the future hall of
famer, Al Shines, his beautiful
daughter Kylie Shines!
(cheering)
And the new face of racing,
Kid Walker!
(cheering and whistles)
Lady and gentlemen,
get ready to start your engines!
(cheering)
Whoo.
(cheering)
(wind blowing)
(crowd roars)
(cars starting, engines roar)
And they're off.
(tires squealing)
Walker gets the drop on
Shines and Shines, but Kylie
Shines is not gonna give up the
real estate that easily.
She looks to the outside,
tryin' to move to the front but
Walker has got the preferred
line, they're door to door as
they move into turn three.
What I hear, there must
be a lot of animosity between
the Kid and Kylie.
I heard that, and they both
want that Cates ride really bad.
I don't think so, Kylie.
Kylie is focused and on her
game but she can't seem to get
around Kid.
All this is happening at
speeds faster than we ever see
out here.
Three racers with the track
all to themselves.
Al's got the best seat
in the house.
It looks like he's just sittin'
back to watch Kylie and Kid
run each other over the track.
Al's not gonna make
a move on us.
No, Al's always comfortable
in third, for a while.
Smooth and patient, right Crash?
Al's wanting you to go after
Kid so you two wear
yourselves out.
And comin' round the fourth
turn we have Walker, Shines
and Shines again.
We're now at lap 50 and
Walker is still in the lead,
followed by Kylie Shines
with Al Shines in third.
Protect the bottom there,
he wants you on the inside.
Kid keeps tryin' to pull out
in front but no matter where
he goes, she's right there.
Nope.
She's in there.
She's in there.
And man, almighty she's a
good little driver.
She's takin' everything he's
throwin' her way, she's still
right on his tail.
Let's see how Kid likes
this bumper to bumper play.
Steady Andy,
running my own race.
Kylie seems to have found
a new style of drivin'
all of a sudden.
She's a quick learner
all right, patient,
more focused.
I know.
What will Walker do with this?
He can't seem to shake her.
I've had enough of these games.
She wants to play like this,
I'm gonna show her how the
big boys play.
Keep hittin' your mark.
She wants to ride on your tail
like that, then you brake check
her and pull away fast.
Okay, which turn?
Turn two, three or four?
Turn two, turn two.
They're coming into the
straightaway and Shines is
drafting while pressing Walker
and it looks like she's gonna
try and pass and take the lead.
Brake check.
Ooh, Walker's brake checking,
trying to keep Kylie.
(tires squealing)
Walker's car is all outta steam.
(metal crunching)
Whoo, look out,
the car is into the wall.
(crowd moans)
Whoa.
Is he okay?
Walker still has not dropped
his window net.
Oh, man.
Is he okay?
Is Kid out?
(siren sounding)
Ladies and gentlemen,
number 41, Kid Walker has gone
into the wall.
Please remain patient while the
emergency crews do their work.
Is Kid out?
I can't see 'em.
They, they still haven't gotten
to him yet.
Wait.
I see him.
Yeah, he's walkin' away.
He's okay.
Kylie Shines and Al Shines
have cleared Walker but he
is definitely out of this race.
We've got a yellow flag.
And here comes the pace car for
Shines and Shines, as Walker
walks away from his car,
good news.
The crowd gives the Kid
a big hand.
I'm not worried about the Kid,
there's gonna be a sequel
in that good ol' boys future.
They're pushin' Walker's car off
the track and now it truly is
a race of the generations.
Well, it's the youth over
experience, we've seen so little
of Al Shines this season but
I think everybody at this track
knows what he's capable of.
That's right, he certainly
has more wins under his belt
than Walker and Shines and the
rest of the Cates team combined.
But we've seen enough of
Kylie Shines to know,
she isn't afraid of a fight.
It's just you and Al now.
And Al Shines has pulled up
next to Kylie.
That's my dad.
What do you think, Crash?
Why, do you want a cup of tea
or somethin'?
Al's not gonna just let you win.
He's gonna make you beat him.
And it looks like they're
gettin' the green flag, yes,
they are getting the green flag.
Pace car has moved
off the track.
Go, go!
And Shines and Shines are
still open long like they're
out for a Sunday drive.
It's a family affair.
What is goin' on down there?
They've got one big wide open
track in front of 'em and
neither one is makin'
the first move.
(crowd roars)
Uh, here they go.
Focus.
Trust your car, hit your marks,
run your line.
Okay, baby girl,
show me what you got.
These speeds are never
achieved but with only two cars
on the track, they're goin'
all out.
Got anything left,
use it now, Kylie.
Holdin' it steady
through the corners.
I'll get my chance.
Push it hard now, in the
groove, in the groove.
(engine revs)
Kylie buries the throttle.
Whoo, it just doesn't get any
better than this.
But oh, Kylie's makin' a bold
move, comin' outta turn two.
All right, let's see it!
Fake fast on the inside Al,
and then go high
and around her.
He's makin' his move.
On the inside, I got 'em.
Now Al, go high, go, go.
He's waitin' for it,
wants to go up around.
I see him.
Show her your fender up top.
Oh, and Kylie is blockin'
every move that Al Shines makes.
She's out drivin' her ol' man.
Yes, good drivin', white flag!
One more lap Al,
give it all you got.
I am giving it all I got.
He's pushing the car,
but you can take it home now.
Nice and smooth.
Yeah!
(cheering)
It's Kylie Shines takin'
the checkered flag.
(cheering)
Whoo!
Oh, Kylie don't scream
into the headset.
You'll blow out the only good
ear I got left.
We did it, baby!
Yes.
(laughing)
Yeah!
(cheering, whistles)
(cameras clicking)
Where's my winner?
(screaming)
Where's my girl?
The newest member of the Cates
Racing family.
(laughing)
Kylie, whoo!
I love you.
Come on.
(both laughing)
Whoo.
Come on.
(laughing)
Oh uh, I'll go get
the truck.
Best driver won today.
I've missed you.
I know.
I'm starting my own team.
Really?
So you're lookin'
for drivers then.
You interested?
Al, congratulations, darlin',
you got a spot on the Cates
Racin' team.
Thanks, darlin'.
But, uh, I think I just got
a better offer.
But you have a deal.
Um-hum.
Team Shines.
I want top billing.
Age before beauty.
Who just won the race?
And who won the hundred races
before that?
Oh, so that's how it's
gonna be, huh?
You have no idea.
Wow.
Um, hey, isn't it tradition for
the winner to get a kiss
from some beautiful girl.
Yeah.
Hum.
Kylie, get your mitts off my
chief mechanic.
Welcome to the
Winner's circle
Now it's time
For celebration
It's time for good vibration
Welcome to the
Winner's circle of friends
I hope it never ends
