The Coldness (2024) Movie Script

1
(Footsteps tapping)
(Nick sighing)
(Nick slurping)
Bear with me here.
I was told I need to have two cameras going
at the same time.
I will also be editing this as I go along.
Okay, here we go.
My name is Nick Polito.
I am a retired homicide detective
from Jersey City, New Jersey.
I spent about five years in uniform,
a little over 25 as a detective.
Seen a lot of things,
worked a lot of cases,
husbands killing wives,
wives killing husbands,
business partnerships gone bad,
tragedies, like a kid got shot in the face
for a schoolyard joke,
you know, a lot of things.
Got shot, only once.
And then he, but I'm doing okay.
Typical cop stuff.
Started drinking heavy.
But I was lucky, I had a good wife
who pointed me in the right
direction and things worked out.
But anyway, I don't
want to talk about this.
This is not the documentary
I'm making, okay?
There's one case I think
about almost every day.
Actually, I think about
this case every day.
We got called to an
apartment on Grand Street.
Super hadn't seen this young
woman for a number of days.
He called PD.
When the uniform showed up, he let him in.
Apartment was neat as a pin.
It was filled with new furniture,
new clothes, new shoes, new everything.
It was like somebody
went on a shopping spree.
Everything was picture-perfect,
except for the refrigerator.
It was at an odd angle in
the middle of the kitchen.
They tried to open it,
but it wouldn't budge.
They had to break it open.
They found a girl inside,
almost frozen solid.
You see, the refrigerator had been altered.
There was a padlock put on the door,
but it was locked
from the inside
and the thermostat had been damaged.
It looked to be damaged on purpose
so that the refrigerator
itself would go sub-zero.
They looked for the key for the padlock.
They couldn't find it,
but they found it later
at the autopsy.
It was in her stomach.
My partner at the time, Terrence Emmett,
good detective, Terry,
he stayed on the case longer than me.
I got pulled off 'cause I had court.
So he closed it out
and he could never get over this case.
Something happened.
He couldn't process it.
He saw the department psychologist.
He talked to people.
He never could get past it.
He ended up leaving the force.
I figured maybe it was because
he was the one who found the note.
Anyway,
I've seen a lot of refrigerators in my day,
as you can imagine,
'cause I'm a pretty old guy.
But every time I see a refrigerator,
there's a couple things I look at.
I open 'em up
and the first thing I do
is I look at the thermostat
and I see how I would damage it or alter it
or mess it up so that it would go sub-zero.
And then I look at the
inside of the door jam
and I see, where would I put the lock.
Where would I put it?
And then I look at the door
and I think, "Where would I
put the other side of the lock?"
And then I look at the refrigerator itself,
and I see how much space I'd have in there
if I removed all the shelves.
You see, we never found the shelves
the refrigerator girl in Jersey City.
That means she had thrown him out
before the last garbage pickup.
Like Terry said, she planned this.
She wanted this.
Pretty terrible, right?
Young girl freezes herself
to death on purpose.
But you see,
I think now
it happened again.
It happened again.
(phone ringing)
[Terry] Yeah.
Hey, Terry.
[Terry] Alright, hold on here,
I had to got my sound...
Got it.
Who is this?
I'll give you one guess.
[Terry] Nick?
Bingo.
How you doing, brother?
[Terry] (laughing) Oh, Jesus Christ.
I mean, you came out of nowhere, man.
I wasn't expecting this,
but pleasantly surprised.
So, why are you calling?
I think you know why, Terry.
[Terry] Hey, man, look, it's
not the same anymore, Nick.
No, it's not.
My friend on LAPD told me
the note was exactly the same.
(Terry sighs)
[Terry] Look, I really don't
wanna relitigate this stuff.
And I certainly don't wanna
get back into this whole thing-
- Hey, hey, listen.
Listen, Terry, no pressure, I'm out...
Listen, listen.
I'm out here on your end in the sunshine.
I figured out Airbnb and everything.
I'm making a documentary.
I just wanna stop by and catch up
and talk a little bit about this, okay?
Just talk a little bit about it.
[Terry] Look, Nick, I can't, I'm sorry.
You gotta let this go.
Getting what you want
is very fucking bad, okay?
I gotta go feed my dog.
I love you, brother.
(cellphone beeping)
(Nick panting)
(no audio)
(door squeaking)
(no audio)
(door squeaking)
(door closes)
(light switch clicks)
(footsteps plodding)
So, my buddy got me into
the LA victim's apartment.
For obvious reasons, I
can't give you his name.
Neat as a pin.
(no audio)
(cane taps)
(no audio)
(no audio)
(Nick sighs)
(no audio)
I wonder what they're
gonna tell the new tenants.
Okay, here is the bedroom.
Okay.
They left some of her clothes here.
Nice stuff.
(Nick sighs)
This was a very
neat woman.
It's where she shot, looks
like her YouTube videos.
(Nick sighs)
Hmm, cat.
(cane taps)
(no audio)
(Nick sighs)
I'm gonna keep this.
Oh, yes, very neat.
(Nick sighs)
Left quite a bit of her things here.
(Nick clears throat)
(Nick grunts)
No drugs.
Vitamin D.
My doctor has me on that.
She says it's like
sunshine in a bottle.
(cupboard doors thudding)
(cupboard doors continue thudding)
(refrigerator humming)
(refrigerator continues humming)
What the hell is this?
(ice tray thudding)
(refrigerator door closes)
(no audio)
(zipper rasping)
(plastic bag crackling)
(zipper rasping)
(no audio)
I talked to my guy at the LAPD.
I let him know about the
ice cube and what I found.
So he's gonna run a DNA check on the hair.
The other thing he
didn't want to talk about,
because he says, you
know, "It's a simple suicide."
Anyway, the other thing I
found in that ice cube tray
was this symbol.
I did some image searches
online, and these came up.
They're called sigils.
It's more than likely that
the ice cube symbol I found
is a sigil.
Now sigil is used in chaos magick.
That's M-A-G-I-C-K, chaos magick.
They're symbols used to summon a deity
or to make something happen,
to get something you want.
To get something you want.
(no audio)
(car door opens)
So Terry has not been returning my calls.
I left several messages,
so I'm just gonna do the old
cop thing and just show up.
But I had to stop here.
Helen would've liked this one.
Old-fashioned name, right?
Even back then.
Old-fashioned name.
(car door closes)
(car lock beeps)
(bird squawking)
Definitely not a low rent neighborhood.
(bird squawking)
Terry.
Terry, it's Nick, I'm downstairs.
Come on, look, Terry, I was
in the neighborhood, man.
Do me a favor.
Don't you wanna see how badly I've aged?
And besides, I really have to take a pee.
Alright, do me...
What's the color?
What?
Okay.
Thanks.
(door buzzing)
(door closes)
(footsteps plodding)
(Nick mumbles indistinctly)
(elevator dings)
Of course, it'll be great to see Terry,
but I want to talk to him about this.
He spent a lot more time
on this case than I did.
Suicide, supposed suicides,
notes are a very big deal in suicides,
and as short as the
note was here, it qualifies.
But Terry was there a lot
longer and he knows something
and I would like to find out what.
(footsteps plodding)
- Hey. (laughing)
- Hey, brother.
Oh, man.
[Nick] How's it going, Terry?
What? You filming this?
[Nick] Yeah, yeah, I told
you, I'm making a documentary.
- You know, I don't know.
- Come on.
Are you okay with being on camera?
Look, look, I'm too gimpy to golf.
I can't fish, you know?
You okay with being on camera?
(sighs) Yeah, I guess so.
Alright, good, good.
- Come on.
- Alright, alright, alright.
Hang on, man, come on in.
Come on in, it's a
little tight in here, but...
- Alright.
- It's right here.
- Straight ahead.
- Okay, okay, good.
- Alright, buddy.
- Alright.
Alright.
Oh, Jesus. (groans)
Look, I'm sorry about the
mess in the shitter, man.
It's just...
It's a shithole, I gotta get a new maid.
That's about it.
Yeah, a maid, I could
use one of those myself.
[Terry] Yeah.
Hey, Terry,
I really appreciate you
letting me in, you know.
This doc, you know,
I'm sure you figured out,
it's about the girl on Grand Street.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- The refrigerator girl.
The suicide, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, suicide, right?
You're sure about that?
Well, yeah, I mean,
it matched all the other
four exemplars we looked at.
You know that.
Yeah, yeah.
Weird note though, right?
Well, she was fucking confused.
Confused?
Yeah, confused.
She was depressed, you know?
People get depressed, they do...
She had no history of depression, Terry,
you know that, there was nothing.
She was happy, she was well-formed.
Her family said that
she stopped calling them.
Her friends said that
she stopped calling them.
I mean, withdrawal is a big fricking deal.
You know that.
That is a slow, hard way to go, Terry.
That is a slow, hard way to go.
I don't know what to say, Nick.
I mean, you know, we closed the jacket out.
You saw that, right?
- You saw that.
- I got the jacket copied,
alright?
I got the jacket tattooed
on my skull, alright?
I had that court thing, I had to leave.
You were on this thing two more weeks.
You closed it out, okay?
[Terry] You saw the jacket,
we closed it out.
You quit the fucking Force
'cause of this.
No, not because of this.
You got a problem with that?
No, no, I...
And the girl,
the girl, she had all those
new clothes, new shoes.
I mean, she worked at Dunkin' Donuts.
How did she get the
money for all that stuff?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Look, it's out there.
You can find things
like that if you look for it.
I don't know, go figure, Nick,
- all right?
- She wrote the same note.
She wrote the same note.
You know that wasn't in anything.
(Terry mumbling indistinctly) That was...
Look, do you want a coffee or something?
[Nick] Yeah, that'd be good.
I got a Keurig.
You like milk?
No, no, black is fine.
All right, black, all right.
I'll be right back.
Oh, man.
Ah, Jesus, my back.
Here you go.
- Oh, thanks, Terry.
- Have a cup of joe.
It's kind of hot.
- Be careful.
- Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
Really nice place, Terry.
Really nice.
Yeah, thanks.
- Thanks.
- Yeah.
I've been here about 15 years.
Traveled around a lot, you know?
Yeah.
I guess it's true.
They said you did well.
And I guess that is a fact.
Hey, how's...
Forgot to ask you, did
you and Helen have kids?
No, no kids.
We tried for a bunch of years.
I mean, the hormone things.
You know, she's
really a wonderful person.
You got a great gal.
Listen, yeah, just...
Helen passed, Terry.
- She passed?
- Yeah, a year ago.
It was cancer.
Stomach.
Jesus.
Wow, I'm really sorry about that, Nick.
Stomach cancer is horrible.
Thanks, Terry, she was a special woman.
But like I said, this doc is helping me.
This is something important to do now.
It's helping me with this.
And like I said, I've
gone through this case
over and over again
and you had nothing listed
for the refrigerator contents.
There was nothing.
What are you talking about?
I mean, there was nothing inside.
You closed this case.
There was nothing-
- There were no shelves inside.
It was empty.
The body was inside there.
You saw it, right?
I know, I know, but what about-
- No, did you see it?
I saw it.
But what about the freezer?
What about the freezer?
The freezer, you know,
where you put the frozen-
- The whole fucking
refrigerator is the freezer.
The freezer where you put the frozen peas
and the ice cubes and things like that.
What are you fucking talking about,
the peas and the ice cubes?
There was none of that in there.
They were all out.
It was just the body.
It was the victim, all right?
There was nothing in the freezer?
Nothing.
Alright, my LA guy got
me into the LA vics apartment
and I found this, I wanna show it to you.
It's a hank of hair and it's a symbol.
I did some research on it.
I think they call it a-
- It's a sigil.
Where'd you find these?
In this.
Jesus.
Yeah, I don't know
what you're talking about.
(ice trays clattering)
Honestly, I don't.
(sighs) You know, I'm not
feeling very well right now.
My ticker, you know, it's old.
It's not the same like it used to be.
You know?
Fuck, I'm sorry.
Just gonna take some of my pills.
I wanna get some rest, okay?
- Alright, Terry.
- Is that alright with you?
Yeah, - We do can do this...
Yeah. Okay.
All right, I'll let myself out.
You want some water or something too, or?
[Terry] No, I got my tea.
I'm okay.
I'm gonna have to pack
up my cameras, okay?
And... (Terry sighs)
Man, can you make it fast?
Yeah, sure.
Thank you.
I'm sorry about that, Nick.
It's all right, I appreciate
your time, Terry.
(camera tinkles)
Okay, so what can I say about that, right?
I mean,
Terry and I worked
together for a lot of years,
but he is not the same man.
He was always meticulous.
I'm gonna have to be very careful
about how I cut this thing
'cause I don't wanna
make Terry out to be a liar.
But he's holding back.
He's scared of something.
When I took out that ice cube tray,
it's like I hit him in
the head with a shovel.
(no audio)
Okay, so I've done more
research on the LA victim
and, hold on a sec.
(camera tinkles)
Okay.
As you can see,
I'm still learning how to do this thing.
Anyway, several calls into Terry,
all straight to voicemail.
So he obviously needs
some more time to process this
so I'm gonna give him that time.
So I figure now is a good time
to review what we know for sure.
Number one, New Jersey woman,
death by freezing, 1999.
Number two, Los Angeles woman,
death by freezing, 2023.
Number three, identical
notes at both scenes,
"The Coldness," same odd short note.
And number four,
the contents of the note
were never released.
I know this seems
strange in this day and age
where everything's
released all over the world
on the internet, but
not so strange in 1999.
That means the LA victim
had no way of knowing
the contents of the note.
By all accounts, both
women were well adjusted,
not depressed in any way.
The New Jersey victim
held down a full-time job
at Dunkin' Donuts.
All the resources we had at the time,
of course, not as much as we have now,
let us know that she was
well adjusted and happy.
Not a suicide risk.
And the LA victim, same deal.
Well adjusted, happy, not depressed,
and very ambitious.
She had her own business.
[Woman] Hello, you've
reached Happy House Cleaners.
We're busy making one of our
precious homes clean and shiny
so please leave your name and number
and we'll get back to you very soon.
Have a blessed and joyful happy house day.
She was also doing
makeup tutorials online.
At the time of her death,
she had over 100,000 followers.
Not easy to do.
And it looked as if she was
growing by leaps and bounds.
Probably wouldn't be
cleaning houses much longer.
So here we have two women,
opposite sides of the country,
20 years apart, that die
in exactly the same way.
It doesn't make sense
unless they were connected.
(upbeat music)
Hello, everyone,
welcome back to my channel.
It is Gabriela, AKA Gabby,
back with another video.
I'm sending love, love, love
to all my followers out there.
You guys are amazing.
Thank you so much for
watching last week's video.
We had so many likes and
views and comments, it was crazy.
You guys are truly the best.
Now, I wanted to just take a minute
and just talk about the
comments on the channel.
Like, at the beginning of my journey here,
I was a little bit on the the pudgy side.
But we are all about body positivity here,
which is why I started
working out seven days a week
and only eating 1,000 calories,
and look at me now.
(sighs) What would I do without you guys?
Ugh, you're the best.
So when I posted last week's video
and I, you know, got a lot
of comments about my hair.
I had some people say
it looked like an oily rat.
Some people said they hated it so much,
they wanted to kill themselves.
I decided to make a change,
and look at my hair now.
(cameras clicking)
What do you think?
Please tell me what you
think, down in the comments.
Well, that's all for this week's video.
Thanks so much for watching.
Please, like, share, comment,
subscribe, all that stuff.
Be sure to tell someone you love 'em today.
You never know when it'll be the last.
Bye, guys.
See you next week.
(upbeat music)
So that was the victim's last video.
As you can see, the hair color is the same,
but as I said before, I
can't do a DNA match
because the victim has been cremated
and there's no way to check on this.
So, we're left with this batshit situation
where I have hair and a
magical symbol in an ice cube tray
that looks like it
matches the victim's hair.
(magical music)
(magical music continues)
Hello, witches.
On this week's episode,
due to popular demand,
I will be instructing you
on how to create a sigil.
Alright, now, some of you may be wondering,
what exactly is a sigil?
A sigil is a specially
charged magical symbol
that you can use to
bend reality to your will.
Did you hear me, witches?
I'm talking about getting
exactly what you want
when you want it on your own terms.
Now, most of us have grown
up in this milksoppy world
where we're told
that you have to get
what you want from others,
that maybe you even have to
wait for them to give it to you.
You're told to wait your
turn, to stand in line.
And if something
happens that you don't like,
we're told to believe that's God's will
and to just accept it for what it is.
But my guess is that if you
found your way here today,
you already know
they're full of shit.
So the first thing you're going to do
is write out exactly what you want.
Ooh, scary, right?
Think about the thing
that you want the most.
I want you to focus all of your energy
and intention on receiving that.
And we're gonna write this
intention down on the paper.
But you have to believe all of this
with every single molecule of your being
until it actually wills it
into manifestation, right?
So instead of saying,
"I really want 10,000 new subscribers,"
what am I gonna say?
"I have 10,000 subscribers."
We're gonna go through and
cross out every duplicate letter.
So, let's see.
I have I, H, A, V, E.
(magical music)
Wonderful, so now, as you can see,
I've crossed out all of the extra letters.
Take each of these individual letters
and create our own
vibe of a magical symbol.
(magical music)
Do you wanna see my special symbol?
Every single letter that was in my sentence
is in this image.
Now you get to charge
your symbol by the earth,
by burying it under the
ground, through the wind,
by maybe tearing it up
and throwing it to the sky,
water, which, you know,
you can toss it in the ocean.
And then we have my personal favorite,
fire, which is burning.
Obviously, I'm gonna
set this bitch on fire.
And that's the last step.
My little witchy babies,
I hope that this tutorial
was helpful for you.
Alright, bye witches.
I'll see you next week.
Mwah.
(magical music)
(magical music continues)
So I found that video
and it was the clearest
by far on what a sigil is.
Ms. Yule gave me
permission to use it in my film.
What struck me was her
repetitive use of the word want.
And I remember Terry,
he said,
"Getting what you want is very bad."
Very bad.
(no audio)
(Nick sighs)
If you're still watching,
it's obvious I don't know what I'm doing.
I had to take a little break.
I went down a YouTube rabbit
hole with that chaos magick.
I mean, some of that stuff is really dark.
And I was pushing so hard.
I was pushing Terry.
He was giving me nothing.
I was so angry.
I went to see a priest
because Helen would suggest that, right?
So I see this priest, he
says, "You're not angry."
You're grieving."
He's telling me how I'm feeling.
All those years on the job,
Helen, gray and wasting
away in that hospital room.
Fuck these priests.
(boat engine rumbling)
So I decided to take a drive
out here to clear my head.
Beautiful.
Helen would've loved this.
She loved the ocean.
Getting closure.
They still say that?
They used to say that all
the time back in the day.
I guess that's what
I'm trying to do out here,
get closure.
This whole situation is making me think
about things that don't make sense.
I ran into a filmmaker
at the grocery store.
He was doing something on
cereal, so I asked his advice.
He told me to just say what's on my mind.
He says, "People want what's real."
So if you think something,
"say something and you can't go wrong."
So this is what I'm thinking.
I'm thinking Gabriela was doing
something with chaos magick.
She made a sigil
and she charged it somehow.
She wanted beautiful hair and she got it.
Any way you cut it,
if you look back at those old posts,
she didn't have hair like that.
It's crazy, right?
I'm not a beauty
products expert, of course,
but what can do that?
Can anything do that?
So I'm thinking,
whatever made Gabriela's hair change
is the same thing that filled
her place with new clothes.
It's the same thing
that filled the Jersey City
victim's place with new clothes.
(boat engine roaring)
And it's the same
thing that got Terry rich.
(boat engine roaring)
(boat engine roaring)
(people chattering)
(water splashing)
(water continues splashing)
So the two victims are
connected by cause of death.
They're connected by suicide note.
What I don't have is evidence
of a sigil from Jersey
City or an ice cube tray.
Terry said he needed a new maid.
Terry said he didn't remember
if there was an ice cube tray.
I'm thinking Terry found that tray.
He found something
inside and he figured it out.
It's not surprising.
Terry's very smart.
Gabriela was cleaning his apartment.
She found the tray and
she started working it.
Now Terry's not returning my calls.
My LAPD guy is done with this
so I can't verify a customer list.
I'm off the job.
I have no juice, especially out here.
But there is something I can do.
(water splashing)
(water continues splashing)
(car engines humming)
So I am in Las Vegas.
I'm a little tired, was a long drive.
Tomorrow I'm meeting with Cassandra Yule.
That's the young woman
who has the YouTube show on chaos magick.
I have some questions for her,
so, hopefully,
more will be revealed.
(car engine humming)
(no audio)
Oh, recording already.
Okay.
[Nick] Thanks again for
agreeing to be in my film.
I really appreciate it.
Yeah, well, when I got your DM,
your question was so specific.
I knew whatever you
were into must be serious.
[Nick] You must get a lot of
people contacting you, huh?
Yeah, well, about a
dozen or so randos a day.
Usually young girls and
creepy men.
[Nick] Hmm.
Anyway, the reason I contacted you
is because of all the chaos magick people
I researched online,
you were far and above the most credible.
(scoffs) Credible? (laughing)
You're being delicate there, Mr. Polito.
I think you meant to say something else.
Maybe sane, perhaps.
[Nick] Hmm, do me a
favor, call me Nick, okay?
I have a question for you.
Does this stuff actually work?
(scoffing) Work?
I mean, if by work you
mean through the process
of setting clear intentions,
can you affect the material world?
Then yes, it fucking works.
So by affect the material world,
you mean to make things happen
or get things?
Yes, according to your will.
Well, I can understand that
and I can make things happen
according to my will all of the time.
If I want a sandwich, I
can go to the grocery store,
I can get meat, bread and cheese.
I can go home and make a sandwich.
I willed for a sandwich
and I made it happen.
And magick works in a similar way.
But, (laughs) you know,
for more difficult things,
things that are harder
to get than a sandwich.
How does it work?
There are a lot of
different ways to describe it.
I personally like to think of it
as working with the collective mind,
the hybrid mind or overmind with chaos.
Chaos means disorder.
So you're saying the overmind,
the universe is disordered.
I prefer to think of it
more like random energy,
you know, just sitting
there waiting to be directed.
Because, you know, the thing is,
we all came from this huge
random nothingness, right?
So, with clear intention and focus,
we can use that energy
and harness it to manifest
whatever the fuck we want.
So that's what the charged sigil does?
But you have to fucking believe it.
You have to believe it
with every single molecule
in your being or it won't work.
Can you charge a sigil with ice?
I've never considered that actually.
'Cause like, ice is stronger than water.
It could work really well, actually,
but you likely would need
some sort of specially blessed vessel
to hold the water in while it freezes.
Okay, so, I prefer to burn my sigils,
but I don't just do that shit anywhere.
I have this very specific
specially blessed pot
that I use it, because the pot
works to contain the energy.
(no audio)
Okay, as I said, there's
something else I can do.
For those of you still watching,
you may feel that you've wasted your time
because this is the moment
where I step into crazy town.
See, I've made a sigil for a want.
I don't think I can get this.
But if I do, it'll go a long
way towards convincing me
that this stuff really, really works.
So here we go.
(water splashing)
(glass thudding)
(cane thudding)
(footsteps plodding)
(refrigerator door closing)
See, crazy, right?
Now, just in case anybody needs more,
I've written out my want
and addressed it to myself
at this house address.
My want is very specific
and I will have it before
this letter comes back.
Should be no more than two or three days.
(intercom ringing)
(gate buzzing)
So I got a call from
Gabriela's ex-boyfriend.
My LAPD contact did me a
solid and passed on my number.
(knuckles rapping)
Hey, Nick?
[Nick] Yeah, yeah.
- Come on in.
- All right, thanks.
You want anything to drink?
[Nick] No, I'm good, thanks.
Do you mind if I have one?
[Nick] No, no, no, go ahead.
Oh, have a seat.
[Nick] So I guess you know
what I'm trying to do here,
right?
Yeah.
Okay, so you're okay being filmed?
Yeah, that's fine.
Alright, good, good.
You called my buddy at the LAPD and...
Oh, and do me a favor, while we're filming,
please don't mention his name, all right?
No problem.
Yeah, I called him.
Why did you call him?
'Cause I was having nightmares.
I'm not surprised.
Terrible thing to find someone like that,
let alone a girlfriend.
Ex-girlfriend.
I heard.
(inhales) Not my choice.
Why did you go to her apartment?
We were still talking.
(John clears throat)
She had days where things
were almost normal with us.
Almost normal?
Yeah, we were good together.
[Nick] Okay.
She started talking
about how she was raised
to be a victim and...
Are you talking about abuse?
Was she abused as a kid?
No.
No, no, man, look, nothing like that.
I mean, her parents were real chill.
She meant everything.
The whole world just
forced her to be a certain way
and she didn't wanna be that way anymore.
So what was she gonna do about that?
First she started with the tarot cards.
After she stopped with the tarot,
then she went onto the crystals.
And after the crystals
she started drawing things
and burning them in a little iron pot.
And then she stopped returning my calls.
Did she ever tell you why?
Closest she got to explaining
was that she had finally
found the right thing
and when the change was
done, she would let me know.
While she was going through all of this,
did she ever seem depressed?
No, she seemed excited.
I know everything points
to her committing suicide.
It just doesn't make sense to me, man.
Gabriela wouldn't do that.
She wanted to live just bigger.
Do you think anybody else was involved?
I don't know, man.
I think it was just some horrible mistake.
Today's mail.
(envelope tearing)
(paper crackling)
(no audio)
Okay, let's see what
this thing can really do.
(cane clacking)
(water splashing)
(glass thudding)
(refrigerator humming)
(refrigerator door closing)
(no audio)
(water rushing)
Of course, I could be
faking all of this, but I'm not.
The truth is, I took a
bullet in the knee on the job.
The docs did everything they could.
But for the past 10 years,
I've been in constant pain
ranging from dull ache to sharp spasms.
I mean, crap tons of Advil do nothing.
And of course I've needed a cane
because I can't put weight on my left knee.
But after last night's sigil placement,
I woke up this morning
completely pain-free.
I mean, no pain.
And of course, I could
be faking this, but I'm not.
Now I'm doing something
I always love to do.
I'm hiking pain-free.
I'm not walking pain-free,
I'm hiking over uneven ground
and up inclines completely pain-free.
I mean, if something like this is possible,
anything is possible, right?
Okay, so let's do the
detective thing, right?
And let's review what we know.
One, I made a sigil
about Gabriela's boyfriend,
and he contacted me.
Two, I made another sigil about my knee,
and now I'm hiking pain-free.
And three, I put both
sigils in the ice cube tray,
leading me to believe
that it is a specially charged container
like Cassandra Yule talked about.
It's like Aladdin's lamp.
Real things, right?
Real things.
The mountains, right?
Nature.
I mean, this is a natural order of things.
Nobody ever taught me this before.
Wanting and getting,
nobody ever taught me this.
Did anybody ever teach you?
If I knew this before,
I would've never needed those pills.
(no audio)
(no audio)
(no audio)
(fire crackling)
(people chattering)
Lots of kids in this neighborhood.
Helen would've liked that.
(fire crackling)
I was always there for
Helen every inch of the way
and she was always there for me.
We were a team.
I only dropped the ball at the very end.
(fire crackling)
I'm sorry, Helen,
(fire crackling)
but I can fix this.
(fire crackling)
(fire continues crackling)
(fire continues crackling)
(fire continues crackling)
(fire continues crackling)
(no audio)
Hello?
Nothing is working.
What do you mean?
It worked right away at first.
I healed my knee.
But this next thing,
the thing I really want is not happening.
(sighs) What are you trying to do, Nick?
Something really important to me.
Can you tell me what it is?
I don't know how to say it, I...
I'm sorry, I can't say it out loud, okay?
Is it a thing
or a person?
It's a person.
Is this person living?
No.
What you are trying to do
is not recommended, Nick.
I don't care.
This is what I want, okay?
Remember, want.
Nick, look, the spirits
that do this sort of work,
who have enough power
to do this sort of work,
you don't wanna mess with them.
Trust me.
Look, I want this thing to happen.
Can you help me or not?
(Cassandra sighs)
Okay.
Well, if the sigil's not working,
then that means something
must be blocking its charge.
Did you know this person well?
We were very close.
Did something happen
between the two of you?
There's nothing I can think of.
Because if something did,
if you're denying something
or you have unfinished
business with this person
that would block the charge.
You have to clear whatever residual energy
is left from that exchange
before the sigil will work and charge.
If I do that,
there's gonna be consequences.
Okay, well,
(Cassandra sighs)
the spirits that you're
gonna work with to do this
are very powerful.
So if you can clear the block,
theoretically you could
create another sigil
to remove the consequences.
Just manifest them away.
Thank you.
Thank you.
(Nick inhales)
(footsteps plodding)
(items shuffling)
(footsteps shuffling)
I'm so sorry, Helen,
but now I can make this right.
I can make this right.
(plastic crackling)
(Nick panting)
(plastic crackling)
(no audio)
So something happened with the last sigil,
some kind of energy and
there's something in this house now.
I'm hearing
scratches.
(something scratching)
You hear that?
(ghostly noise)
Whispers.
The spirits are letting
me know that they're here.
Hello?
Listen.
Hello?
They come in the dark.
This counts as light.
Hold on.
Hello?
I did what I was told.
I did what I was told to do,
I cleared the block.
Will you give me what I asked for?
Where's my wife?
Where's my wife?
I did what I was told.
I did what I was told.
(lighter clicking)
(no audio)
(lighter clicking)
So I've made a new sigil.
(Nick panting)
to be told exactly,
specifically,
what I need to do.
(ice tray clanking)
(footsteps shuffling)
(refrigerator door opening)
(refrigerator humming)
(refrigerator door closes)
So I'll review the footage later,
but you heard the
scratches and the whispers.
They haven't been in this house before.
(Nick panting)
This was supposed to be our time,
and now I'm alone.
I was not perfect at the end.
My fucking knee.
Pain can make you selfish.
Pain is the fucking devil.
(no audio)
Nick, why are you calling me at 7:00 AM.
You should never FaceTime
a woman at 7:00 AM.
I did exactly what you said,
but I am not getting what I want.
(sighs) Well, yeah, dude.
I told you, what you're trying to do
is, like. really difficult.
I heard scratching sounds.
You heard scratching?
Oh, Nick, that is really bad.
That is so bad.
Seriously, you should stop
whatever it is you're doing.
I can't.
This is what I want.
(sighs) Oh, God.
Wow.
Did you ask for a sign?
I made another sigil
to be told exactly, specifically,
what I need to do next.
Then I guess I am your answer,
because somehow I know
exactly what you need to do next.
Tell me.
(Cassandra sighs)
I'm serious, man.
You haven't even really started this yet.
You could stop right now
before this whole thing takes off.
Tell me, please.
I want this.
Okay.
So, if you're hearing
these scratching noises,
that means that they're
trying to communicate with you.
There are a couple things you can do,
two very powerful ways,
that you can help this communication along.
[Nick] Okay.
The first one,
you could go buy a Ouija board.
The kids game?
It's not a game, dude.
I suppose I could buy one.
What's the other way?
The other one is automatic writing.
How does that work?
Basically, you get a
piece of paper and a pen,
put the pen on the paper
and then ask the spirits
to speak through it.
So the spirits will move my pen.
Yes.
How will I know if
it's not just motor reflex
or wishful thinking or something?
You'll know.
I gotta tell you, man
you really, really shouldn't do this.
I'm serious, I know you
don't wanna listen to me,
but, like, I don't know how many times
I can warn you against not doing this.
(no audio)
Whoever is here,
tell me exactly what I need to do
to get what I want.
(no audio)
(pen scratching)
I'm not moving this pen.
(pen scratching)
"Tell Terry."
Telling Terry's the last
thing I would ever want to do,
but I will do it.
(no audio)
(no audio)
Hey, Nick.
[Nick] Hey, Terry.
Come on in.
- Okay.
- Just gotta close this here.
[Nick] All right.
Come on, let's walk over here.
It's a little cramped.
(sighs) Boy.
[Nick] Thanks for
agreeing to see me, Terry.
That's no problem.
[Nick] I needed to tell
you what's been going on.
Yeah?
[Nick] And to tell you what I know.
What do you know?
Who was your maid, Terry?
Turn the camera off.
(door closes)
As you know, Terry didn't
give permission to film him.
He also wants no more
part of this documentary,
and he didn't give me permission
to repeat what we talked about.
(sighs) It would appear
then that the automatic writing
steered me in the wrong direction
since I spent three hours with Terry
with nothing to show for it.
But you'd be wrong.
Because now I know I'm
moving in the right direction.
Now I know.
I'm going to get what I want.
I'm gonna get what I want.
(no audio)
(Nick panting)
So after I last saw Terry,
I got a call the next day.
(no audio)
(door alarm beeps)
(cars whooshing)
(car door closes)
(cars whooshing)
(Nick panting)
They buried him yesterday.
(Nick panting)
I couldn't be here.
I couldn't face it.
I pushed him too hard.
Terry was a good man.
(cars whooshing)
(no audio)
I'm sorry I haven't filmed
for a couple of days,
but it's been very busy.
This is Helen's side of the bed.
Traveling or at home,
this is where Helen sleeps.
I know what you're thinking.
Why am I saying is,
because Helen's not here?
Helen's dead.
But you see,
now I know I'm gonna get what I want
and what I want is Helen back.
That's what we've been doing
for the past couple of weeks now,
right, Helen?
Right, Helen?
Did you hear that?
Let me get this camera on.
You see,
I hear from Helen
quite frequently from this vent.
Listen.
Helen,
I'm filming.
They need to hear you.
They need to hear you, Helen.
I understand.
Helen's not speaking because
she knows we're almost there.
We're very close.
All the steps have been taken.
Everything is in place.
And soon I'm going to get what I want.
And what I want is Helen back
and that's what I'm going to get.
I know if you're still watching,
that sounds unbelievable,
but trust me,
it's a you'll see kind of thing.
(heart beating)
(heart continues beating)
(tense music)
So let me turn this camera on.
(camera dinging)
Okay,
the camera is plugged in.
I have a new memory card,
so there's plenty of space.
(tense music) (Nick panting)
I now know I am going to get what I want.
I don't know how the transition works, so.
This is all the footage
I've shot and edited so far.
So whoever finds this,
just add the new footage to this.
The refrigerator
has been prepped.
(tense music)
(tense music continues)
(Nick panting)
(refrigerator door closes)
(Nick panting)
(padlock thudding)
(Nick panting)
This is the answer to everything.
Pure joy,
pure loving joy.
(refrigerator humming) (heart beating)
The coldness.
(refrigerator humming) (heart beating)
(refrigerator humming)
(heart continues beating)
(refrigerator humming)
(heart continues beating)
(padlock thudding and clicking)
(padlock continues thudding and clicking)
(Nick moaning)
(Nick groaning)
(heart beating)
(refrigerator humming)
(refrigerator continues humming)
(refrigerator continues humming)
(ghostly voices speaking indistinctly)
(refrigerator humming)
(objects clanging)
(objects continue clanging)
(refrigerator humming)
(ghostly voices speaking indistinctly)
(refrigerator humming)
(refrigerator continues humming)
