[pencil scratching]
Heavenly Father, I ask that
you grant me the serenity
to accept the things that I,
that I cannot change.
[fingers tap]
Amen.
[somber piano music]
[instructor]
Nice port de bras.
Don't forget to pull up.
Brush through first.
Turn out, no single feet.
Listen to the beat of the music.
Heels on the ground.
Straighten those legs.
[Totsuko] Living things have
developed the ability
to perceive color because of
eons and eons of evolution.
Objects absorb certain parts
of light and reflect others.
And what's reflected travels
through the retina
into the brain.
So all colors are
waves of light.
Red apples,
green leaves,
blue fish.
Depending on the
wavelength of the light,
we see different colors.
Supposedly.
Because for me,
colors can be different.
I see what other people see,
but I feel something else.
[somber piano music]
TOTSUKO HIGURASHI
I wanna be pink like you are.
How'd you get to be so orange?
Oh, what a pretty blue.
Just like butterflies and bees
find their way
to pretty flowers,
or dolphins and the way
they hear things humans can't.
Colors can be felt
instead of seen.
When I feel a pretty color,
my heart starts racing.
[somber piano music]
I don't know how to explain it,
or if I can.
[somber piano music]
[camera clicks]
[somber piano music]
I can't see or feel
my own color,
but I wonder what color I'd be.
[somber piano music]
[bell tolling]
[door banging]
-Morning.
-Oh, hi.
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[student] Did you hear what
happened the other day?
[student yawns]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[student laughs]
[dish clanks softly]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[footsteps tapping softly]
[utensils clanging]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
Hmm, hmm, hmm!
[student giggles]
[Totsuko gasps]
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
Hey, morning. How are you?
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
[birds chirping]
-I'm fine.
-Are you sure?
-Hey, wait up!
-I'll get over it.
-Got ya!
-Morning!
-I'm in.
-I thought you'd say that.
[students laughing]
[students chattering]
See you after class.
[students chattering]
[birds chirping]
[bell tolling]
[bird chirping]
-[student] Oh, there's the bell.
-[Saku] Come on, hurry!
If I'm marked tardy
one more time,
I'll have to do
community service.
Oh, okay.
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
-Girls, no running.
-[student] I'm sorry!
-Good morning, sister!
-Good morning.
Quiet down, no running.
[gasps] Oh.
Inside voices.
Ladies, calm down.
No running in the halls.
[students chattering]
[Saku] Toko!
[gasps] I'm coming!
[footsteps tapping]
[Totsuko panting]
I made it.
Oh, we're good.
[Sumika hums]
[student panting]
[students chattering]
[door creaks]
[Sister Juri] Stand.
[chair legs scratch]
[Sister Juri] Bow.
[students]
Good morning, sister.
Good morning, everyone.
[bee buzzing]
[solemn instrumental music]
[footsteps tapping]
How'd you do?
That quiz before
sure was a tough one.
[Kimi] Yeah,
it was a tough one.
Wow, even for you?
[laughs] Yes, even for me.
[student 1] But you got
100% on the last one.
[student 2]
And that one was hard too.
Oh, is student council today?
-[Kimi] Yeah, I think so.
-Oh, cool.
[laughs] Hey, Kimi.
We just wanted to ask you
something about choir
practice.
[student 3] Uh huh,
we'd love to get your opinion.
[Kimi] Yeah, okay,
what do you need?
[Totsuko sighs]
[wind blustering]
[solemn music]
[students chattering]
[student 3] Do you think you
could make some time?
[Kimi] Of course,
no problem.
[students chattering]
P.E.
[whistle blowing]
[students chattering]
[ball thuds]
[students chattering]
[Kimi grunts]
[students chattering]
[ball thuds]
[students chattering]
[ball thuds]
[students chattering]
[Totsuko gasps]
[quirky music]
So pretty.
[ball thuds]
[Totsuko groans]
[all] Toko!
[quirky music]
[students chattering]
Totsuko, are you okay?
[students gasp]
You good?
[Totsuko groans]
[all] Totsuko!
[teacher] Are you okay?
[bell tolling]
-Bye!
-See ya!
I'd take a stab at kendo.
[students chattering]
[train rumbling]
[solemn piano music]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
[dog barking]
[gate creaks]
SAKUNAGA
[Kimi] I'm home.
[Grandma] Hmm?
[solemn piano music]
[clothes rustle]
[footsteps pattering]
[chair creaks]
[beads rattle]
[beads clack]
[guitar strumming]
[pieces tap]
Mm-hmm.
[all] Huh?
You feeling okay, Toko?
[gasps] I'm fine!
I'm just feeling sparkly!
[laughs]
She got hit harder
than I thought.
-I hate dodgeball.
-Mm-hmm, same.
[playful music]
[energy whirring]
Hey, you okay?
-I'm sorry.
-[Totsuko] I'm fine.
Really,
there's no need to worry.
Thanks, though.
[Totsuko laughs]
[curtains clatter]
[all] Huh?
[water splashing]
[footsteps tapping]
[water splashing]
[students chattering]
[Totsuko]
Where's Miss Sakunaga?
She's not here.
[students chattering]
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in praise
[student 1] Practice is
somewhere else today, right?
-[student 2] Is it?
-Oh, yeah.
-Sister said so, remember?
-I forgot.
Excuse me.
I haven't seen
Kimi Sakunaga lately.
Do you know if she's been
on vacation or something?
Didn't you hear?
Kimi dropped out of school.
[footsteps tapping]
We were pretty
shocked by it too.
[Totsuko] Why?
I heard she talked back
to one of the sisters.
[student 2] I heard they found
out she had a boyfriend.
There are a bunch
of different rumors.
But nobody really knows.
The choir's sure gonna miss her
at the concert
we have coming up.
So what's she doing now?
Do you know?
[muffled students chattering]
[student whispering] Hey, I
think I saw Kimi the other day.
[student 2] Really?
Like no way, where?
[student 1] Downtown
at this little bookstore.
Looked like she was
working at the register.
[train rumbling]
[gentle music]
BOOKSTORE
[bell ringing]
[train engine humming]
[footsteps tapping]
[doors humming]
[gentle music]
[footsteps tapping]
[doors humming]
[people chattering]
[Totsuko groans]
Heavenly Father, I ask that
you grant me serenity.
The serenity to accept
the things,
which I know that I will
never be able to change.
Amen.
[Sister Hiyoko] Amen.
[Totsuko] Sister Hiyoko.
Miss Higurashi,
I couldn't help but notice
you're forgetting
some of the serenity prayer.
It also asks God for the courage
to change the things we can
and for the wisdom
to know the difference.
Accepting what we cannot change
is also important,
but that's only part of it.
Do you understand?
Yeah.
I just...
Right now, I'm asking God
for some peace of mind.
I'm sorry,
is something troubling you?
-Do you need to confess?
-Oh, no.
Thank you, Sister Hiyoko.
You have a beautiful color.
Ah, sorry, I just mean...
No, it's nothing, forgive me.
[Totsuko whimpers]
[footsteps thud]
[somber music]
-[Saku] Same thing as always.
-[Shiho] That's fine with me.
-Hmm?
-Mm, yummy.
Toko, what's the matter?
-Something happen?
-Oh!
No, everything's good here.
You sure?
BISCUIT-MANJU
-[Saku] Here, take one.
-[Shiho] They're good.
Thank you all.
You're the sisters
of the forest.
[all] Huh?
[Totsuko]
Just, I meant your colors.
-Hmm?
-I mean, your auras are so...
They're so soft
and calm and earthy.
[Sumika] You mean ordinary?
Ah.
Hey, Grandma, I'm heading out.
Have a nice day, sweetie.
And don't forget your lunch,
it's on the table.
Oh, thanks.
[passenger] We need soy sauce.
Oh, and soup.
[train rumbling]
[footsteps thudding]
[birds chirping]
WHITE CAT HALL
[footsteps thudding]
[footsteps thudding]
[Kimi sighs]
Fair thee well and go with God.
[students chattering]
So what are we doing today?
I'm up for just about anything.
-I'll catch up.
-Bye!
[student]
I'll just see you later, okay?
[student 2] Yeah.
[student 3] Thanks, goodbye!
[footsteps tapping]
[guitar strumming]
[somber music]
[children shouting]
Wait, slow down!
[clerk] Oh, I'm sorry.
I don't have the box
for this one.
[Rui] Oh, that's okay.
I don't need it.
You sure?
Because I have newer ones
that are better.
-I'm good.
-Okay.
[Rui] Thank you.
[somber music]
SECOND-HAND SHOP
[cat meows]
[footsteps thudding]
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[Kimi] Welcome.
[clock ticking]
[footsteps thudding]
Where are you off to, huh?
[giggles]
You on a kitty-cat adventure?
Oh, me?
I'm just out here
trying to find someone.
[books clacking]
[Kimi sighs]
[clock ticking]
[footsteps tapping]
[books thud]
[playful music]
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps tapping]
[playful music]
USED BOOKS SALE
[Totsuko] Gotcha.
[gasps] A bookstore?
[guitar strumming]
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
That song,
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
[footsteps thudding]
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
Found you.
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
[Kimi gasps]
Uh, sorry, I...
I was just looking for...
[Totsuko groans]
EASY PIANO PIECES NO. 1
Found you.
This is the one,
such a tough book to find.
[gasps] That's such a relief.
[sighs] Yeah,
must be my lucky day.
Just this, please.
So you play piano?
The piano?
Oh, yes.
And it looks like
you play the guitar?
[Kimi] Yeah, just practicing.
[Totsuko] Wow, that's cool.
Oh, by the way, sorry
about the dodgeball incident.
No, don't mention it.
You know,
that song you were playing?
I love it.
We sang it in choir
all the time.
Yeah.
[tense music]
So are you really not
coming back to school?
[Kimi groans]
[Totsuko] Sorry.
[Rui] Hey, excuse me.
Oh, yes?
Sorry to interrupt,
but are you two in a band?
[gasps] A band?
You think we look like
bandmates?
I don't know.
You're always playing that
guitar, so it got me thinking.
[energy whirring]
Sorry to spring this on you.
I've been wanting to ask
for a while.
[Totsuko gasps]
[energy whirring]
Actually, we...
We just started looking for
new band members.
What do you say?
Would you have
any interest in joining us?
[playful piano music]
Oh, nevermind, forget I asked.
Besides we're not even, I mean,
it's not even a band yet.
Wait, and you're a boy, too!
-Oh, holy mother!
-[coin purse clatters]
[Rui] Can I?
I guess.
[gasps] Miss Sakunaga,
I'm so sorry.
It's okay, you don't have to
if you don't want to.
I just,
I thought it would be fun and--
I'd love to.
[Totsuko gasps]
[water rushing]
[birds cawing]
[playful piano music]
[Kimi] Hey, look outside.
It's beautiful, huh?
Oh, yeah.
[Kimi] What's wrong?
I think I might be
a little bit seasick.
Are you okay?
I'm fine.
I have water.
You think you should lie down?
I can do that?
Mm-hmm.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry.
No signal?
[water splashing]
[seagulls cawing]
Hey!
Hi!
[laughs] Hey!
It's great to see you two.
I almost didn't think
you'd come.
[Kimi] We would've called,
but we didn't have reception.
Are you feeling okay there?
Yeah.
I think I just need
a little air.
[seagulls cawing]
Welcome.
Come on in.
It was a church.
They don't use it
for that anymore,
but it's been preserved for
its historical significance.
And they let me use it
for whatever I want.
As long as I keep it clean.
I just have to keep it
on the down low.
[somber piano music]
[footsteps thudding]
[floor creaking]
-It's beautiful.
-I know, right?
Oh, thanks for sharing it
with us.
[somber piano music]
[Totsuko gasps softly]
[footsteps thudding]
[somber piano music]
[lively whirring music]
[Rui breathes deeply]
[somber whirring music]
[zipper clatters]
[somber whirring music]
[pieces clack]
[instrument thuds]
[somber electric guitar music]
[Totsuko gasps]
[somber electric guitar music]
Oh.
[somber electric guitar music]
SUPER NICE ICE CREAM
-[Totsuko] Vanilla.
-[Kimi] Toasted almond.
[Rui] Mint chocolate chip.
Super ice cream cone.
What?
The band name?
Yeah.
Huh, it's certainly playful.
Uh-huh, but super.
Makes it feel strong.
Oh, and what instrument
were you playing?
-[Rui] A theremin.
-Cool.
[water splashing]
[quirky music]
[Totsuko] I'm sorry, I don't
know how to talk to boys.
[Rui] You're doing fine.
Just say what feels natural.
[Totsuko] I don't know
what feels natural though.
Well, whatever you wanna say.
And that's okay?
[Rui] Yeah, simple as that.
[Totsuko] Okay, then.
Is...
Is it alright
if I call you "Kimi"?
Of course.
[Totsuko gasps]
[Totsuko]
And is "Rui" okay?
I'd like that.
Oh.
The ferry's gonna be here
any minute.
[ferry engine humming]
Hey, Kimi.
Huh?
I have a confession.
I'm actually
not very good at piano.
I'm gonna disappoint you,
I know it.
I'm only a beginner
at guitar myself.
It's okay.
My big brother kind of
left it behind.
I didn't know you had a brother.
Mm-hmm, but he moved out
when he got a job.
[Totsuko gasps]
Don't worry,
I'll practice before next week.
If we work hard,
we can play any song we want.
Just like a real band.
Not that I know what
a real band is like. [laughs]
[somber music]
Thanks, Kimi.
See ya.
-Are you alright?
-Mm-hmm.
Bye. [groans]
[somber music]
Later.
[somber music]
[train rumbling]
-[passenger 1] What, no way.
-[passenger 2] Yes, way.
It was probably just a bobcat.
It wasn't a bobcat, silly.
-Okay, I believe you.
-Do you?
[vegetables crunch]
[water bubbling]
Hmm.
-[Kimi] I'm home.
-Welcome back.
Dinner won't be for a while yet.
Hmm.
How was your day?
Did you have choir practice?
No, not today, something else.
Oh?
-I'm gonna go change.
-Okay.
Oh, that tastes good.
Kimi, you're not eating.
Should I dish it up for you?
Actually, Grandma,
I wanted to, uh...
-Yes?
-Oh, it's nothing.
Nevermind.
Oh, that's right, your uniform.
You'll need
your summer one soon.
I'll get it, and we'll have
your spring one cleaned.
Hmm.
Can't believe my little Kimi
is wearing
the same uniform I wore.
Hmm, mm-hmm.
[energy whirring softly]
Rui's theremin.
I wonder if he can see sound.
[bristles scratching]
[Rui] Hey,
I wanna play originals.
[Totsuko] What?
You mean you want us
to write music?
[Rui] Yes.
Can we?
Can we do that?
I think we can, yeah.
I would love to hear you
play a song that you wrote.
You can write some songs, too.
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps tapping]
Kimi, do you want
to write music?
I mean, I've thought about it,
but I'd like to try.
[Totsuko] Wow, okay.
So much pressure.
[Kimi] You're gonna do it too?
[Totsuko] Well...
What's the matter,
are you alright?
[Rui] Yeah, everything's fine.
Anyway,
I'll see you guys next week.
[footsteps tapping]
[ferry engine humming]
[Totsuko]
You think that was his mom?
Maybe he just wasn't comfortable
letting her see us.
But I guess that's probably
for the best anyway.
It's against school rules
to spend time with boys.
I told my roommates
we formed an all-girls band,
so they wouldn't find out.
Oh, that means I told a lie!
I'm gonna need to
go to confession.
Okay, I'll head to the chapel
as soon as I can.
Sorry, I'm talking about school,
that's not fair.
[laughs] It's okay.
[wind howling]
If I were to write a song...
[soft synth music]
[video narration] There are
many different types...
[Totsuko]
I'd want to find a way
to express Kimi's colors
through sound.
[video narration continues] The
largest celestial bodies in our
solar system are the eight
planets and beautiful Earth.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM. KIMI'S COLOR.
[narrator 2]
Colors so vibrant they can--
[narrator 1] Their orbital
path follows the sun.
-[narrator 2] Round and round.
-[narrator 1] This is called--
[narrator 2] They circle around
and round and round the sun.
[Totsuko] Beautiful.
[narrator 1]
They orbit the sun...
[overlapping narration]
[Totsuko]
It's truly beautiful.
[somber chiming music]
[narration continues] It all
started with a massive explosion
approximately
4.6 billion years ago.
[desk slams]
[students chatter]
[Totsuko gasps]
Huh, huh?
[button clicks]
[Totsuko chuckles]
[students chattering]
[teeth chomping]
[solemn music]
Kimi's color
really is beautiful.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Vibrant and exciting.
[solemn music]
[globe clicking]
[solemn music]
[Totsuko gasps]
Like a spinning planet.
[window slides]
[solemn music]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Sun and Jupiter
and Saturn, Amen
[Sister Hiyoko chuckles]
[gasps] Sister Hiyoko!
Miss Higurashi,
school's out for today.
Oh, right, sorry.
I'll head out soon,
in just a minute.
[footsteps tapping]
I could hear you raising
your voice in prayer, though.
Amen.
Amen.
No, it was nothing. [chuckles]
Goodbye, have a nice day.
[footsteps tapping]
[Totsuko hums]
[soft keyboard music]
[soft keyboard music]
[Totsuko] Huh.
This sounds like Rui's colors.
And this sounds like Kimi's.
[soft keyboard music]
[students laughing]
[Saku] Come on,
you gotta do it again.
Fine.
Okay, go.
-Fair thee well.
-That's so good.
Let's listen back.
-What are you doing?
-Hmm?
Practicing our imitations.
Listen to this one,
Sumika's Sister Juri.
[Sumika] Fair thee well!
[students laughing]
You sound just like her.
My phone, it records.
[Saku] Totsuko,
come on, get over here.
[Sumika] Yeah,
you're good at this.
Maybe some other time.
[Sumika]
Saku, do Sister Hiyoko next.
[Saku] Okay, okay.
I'll give it a try.
Wait,
let me practice first though.
[Totsuko inhales]
[phone beeping]
[electric guitar strumming]
Hmm?
ONE MESSAGE
[distant dog barking]
TOTSUKO:
I WROTE A BIT OF A SONG!
[phone buzzing]
E-MAIL
[buttons clicking]
TOTSUKO:
I WROTE A BIT OF A SONG!
Wow, already?
That's amazing.
[buttons slicking]
SENDER: ME
[Totsuko clears throat]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
La, la, la, la, la,
la, la, la, la, la
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
La, la, la, la, la, la, la,
la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la
Hmm.
[Saku] No running in the halls!
[students laughing]
[Sister Hiyoko gasps]
[Kimi gasps]
[Rui gasps]
[Totsuko groans]
THAT WAS SAKU'S VOICE
AT THE END.
[thumbs tapping]
[upbeat pop music]
KAGEHIRA MEDICAL CLINIC
Alright,
I'll write you a prescription
that should help with that.
[patient groans]
I appreciate that, doctor.
Hope you feel better soon.
[footsteps pattering]
I'm home.
Welcome back.
-No cram school today?
-Nah.
Oh, well, should I go get
something for dinner?
It's okay,
I'm not making anything special.
ENTRANCE CEREMONY
Thanks though.
[Rui's Mother]
Don't you need to study?
[Rui] I'll be fine.
The practice tests weren't bad.
[Rui's Mother]
Can't be too careful.
Besides, we're counting on you
to take over the clinic.
[vegetables crunching]
Yeah, I know.
[chuckles]
[food sizzles]
[dish thuds]
[Grandma] Shiro isn't coming
home for the festival this year.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
He said he was going to
meet his girlfriend's family.
Hmm.
Well, your summer break
starts soon too,
doesn't it?
[spoon taps]
[Kimi] Mm-hmm.
I wish I could take you
on a trip somewhere,
but I won't be able to
get time off work.
That's okay.
I'll be pretty busy, too.
-Oh, thanks.
-Right, choir.
That is a lot of work,
but it's in good hands with you.
The principal said so himself.
"The choir's never been better
since we put your Kimi
in charge."
I am so proud of you.
Grandma, I'm not the person
you think I am.
[balls clacking]
[birds chirping]
[birds chirping]
[footsteps tapping]
YOU CREATED A WORLD DEVOID OF
LIGHT WANDERING IN CIRCLES
[Kimi humming]
[electric guitar strumming]
SEARCHING FOR A PATH TO WALK ON
[door clicks]
[Rui] Hi, Kimi.
[clock ticking]
I was just writing a song.
Really, I haven't even started.
That's awesome.
I'll send it to you soon.
I want Totsuko to hear it too.
But it's not a very happy song.
[guitar strumming]
[footsteps thudding]
-[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi?
-Yes, Sister Hiyoko?
-Do you mind if I join you?
-Oh, of course, sit down.
Are you staying in
the dorms all summer
or just for the start?
Oh, yeah, all summer.
There's something I wanna do.
That sounds nice.
And there's certainly nothing
wrong with you staying here.
May I ask you
what you want to do?
Oh, well, I'm writing a song.
[pages rustling]
-Oh, is it a new hymn?
-No, not a hymn.
I mean, it's nothing
as special as that.
SWEET, KIN PLANETS UP,
ORBITING. AMEN!
It's just about my feelings.
It's a song about being happy.
You know,
if the music celebrates
the good, the beautiful,
or the truthful, I think
it can be considered a hymn.
Well, what about sad songs
about sorrow and suffering?
Are they hymns too?
Any song where
you show your heart,
I believe is also a hymn.
Acceptance is important.
I trust that song will
keep your feelings safe,
Miss Higurashi.
[nails scratch softly]
The truth is, I started a band!
Oh.
[bell tolling]
Hmm.
[all] My help
comes from the Lord
who made Heaven and Earth.
The Lord is your keeper and
your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you
by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you
from evil and keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out
and your coming in.
[bell tolling]
From this time on
and forevermore.
IROHA-ZAKA MAP
[Sumika]
Oh, the Irohazaka Road is crazy.
It winds all over the place.
[Totsuko] And we have to take
the bus the whole way?
Bus. [groans]
Come on,
this can't be real, can it?
[students groan]
[chair creaks]
[Grandma] Here you are.
Tempura soba.
Thank you for waiting.
[student] Oh, nice.
We're in the same group
for the field trip.
Uh-huh, yeah, I saw that.
RAINBOW LIGHT GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL
FIELD TRIP TO NIKKO
[student] Oh, what do you think
we'll see, monkeys?
[student 2]
Monkeys are so cute.
[student 1] You think we'll get
to take pictures with them?
[somber instrumental music]
[water splashing]
[somber instrumental music]
[Totsuko] Kimi?
[Kimi gasps]
Hi, Totsuko.
Are you okay?
[somber instrumental music]
[lights buzzing]
[somber instrumental music]
[Totsuko giggles]
I think she likes you.
[Totsuko] You think so?
[cat meows]
Meow to you too!
Hey, Kimi, I'm sorry
to keep asking you this,
but is everything okay?
Hmm-hmm.
Oh, by the way,
next week we have a--
[Kimi] The field trip, right?
I know.
[Totsuko] Yeah.
[Kimi] Totsuko, you promise
not to judge me?
Of course.
It's my grandma.
I haven't told her the truth yet
about dropping out.
[leaves rustling]
Maybe I should just run away.
Come back after the field trip.
I don't know.
I guess
I'm just scared to tell her.
You know?
I just don't wanna hurt her.
[grass crunches]
[footsteps pattering]
Oh, I've gotta go.
Work to do.
Hmm.
[door bangs]
[footsteps pattering]
Welcome!
[door creaks]
[Totsuko groans]
Are you gonna be okay, Toko?
You want anything?
We can buy you souvenirs.
Oh, okay.
Well, we're headed out then.
Help yourself to
the snacks in my desk.
There's some good stuff
in there.
Thanks.
Have fun.
[all] Feel better soon, Totsuko.
[weakly] See you guys soon.
[friends groan]
[door creaks]
[Saku] I can't believe
she's missing the field trip.
[Sumika] Yeah.
[bed creaks]
Oh Lord, please forgive me.
[air whooshing]
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
[Totsuko] Mars, Earth,
Mercury, and Venus, Amen.
[Kimi] Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen.
[insects chirring]
[door creaks]
Welcome to the secret garden.
[whispering] Be very quiet.
[playful music]
[footsteps thudding]
[twig snaps]
Huh?
[air whooshing]
[Totsuko gasps]
[whispers] Cat.
[window slides]
[Kimi meows]
[playful music]
[Kimi groans softly]
[footsteps pattering]
[playful music]
[Totsuko groans]
[Totsuko sighs]
[playful music]
TOTSUKO HIGURASHI: IN RESIDENCE
[Kimi groans]
[water splashing]
[feet thud]
We made it, thanks a lot.
Your room is so cute.
Kimi, are you hungry?
Huh?
No, I'm okay.
Oh, okay.
Well, I told everyone
I had a stomach ache,
which means
all I've had is oatmeal.
[Kimi gasps]
Oh, then you
must be hungry, Totsuko.
Let's see,
I brought a bunch of snacks.
[Totsuko gasps]
Really?
It's my way of saying thank you.
Oh, you shouldn't have.
Totsuko, I'm sorry.
No, this is great.
Now I don't have to
ride the bus.
If I had gone on the field trip,
I think I might have actually
gotten sick. [groans]
[Totsuko gasps]
I almost forgot.
Saku left me a bunch of snacks
we can have, too.
We can have a party!
[Kimi] Okay.
[gentle synth music]
[knocking at door]
[both gasping]
[Totsuko gasps]
[knocking at door]
[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi?
It's Sister Hiyoko.
[Totsuko whimpers]
[objects crash]
[sheets rustle]
[door creaks]
Yes?
I could have sworn
I was hearing voices.
Sorry, just talking to myself.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Shouldn't you be resting?
Oh, yes, but the dishes.
Huh.
You could have left those
in the hallway
and gone back to bed.
Oh, nevermind though.
How are you feeling?
[Totsuko] Still not great.
[Sister Juri] We should take you
to the doctor tomorrow.
[Totsuko]
We don't need to do that.
I'm already feeling much better.
[Sister Juri] It won't hurt to
get an exam either way.
[Totsuko gasps]
Was there anything else?
[gasps] Not at all.
[Totsuko grunts]
[both grunting anxiously]
[Sister Juri] Well, you make
sure to get some rest, alright?
Right.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Have a good night.
[footsteps thudding]
Good night.
[footsteps thudding]
See you tomorrow.
[footsteps patter]
[door creaks]
[door bangs]
Now what am I gonna do?
I keep on lying.
-[Kimi] Totsuko.
-Yeah?
Oh, it'll be fine.
I'll talk about it
in confession.
-[Totsuko] Ow.
-[Kimi] Sorry.
[Totsuko giggles]
Little cramped, huh?
[chuckles] Are you okay, Kimi?
Do you have enough covers?
Hey, what's carved into
the bed there?
Huh?
Oh, that?
I don't know.
It was there when I moved in,
not sure why.
I pray to it every night
before I go to sleep.
God almighty.
Hmm?
[groans] I'm sorry, Totsuko.
Why?
Because I made you lie
to the sisters.
And I...
Kimi, I'm having so much fun,
and I'm really happy.
I promise.
[bed creaks]
And you know, you don't
have to tell me anything
unless you want to.
But if you ask me, I think
you should talk to your grandma.
And if it's scary, I can
come along with you if you want.
No, I'll talk to her
as soon as I get back.
Thanks, Totsuko.
[insects chirring]
[Kimi whispering] Totsuko.
-What's wrong, Kimi?
-I have to pee.
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
Hmm?
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
[solemn organ music]
Immaculate Mary
Your praises we sing
Your reign
[clothes rustling]
Excuse me, I was the one
who invited her to sleep over,
and to do it
during the school trip.
Kimi is-- Miss Sakunaga
didn't do anything wrong.
Miss Higurashi,
regardless of the reason,
outsiders are strictly
prohibited
from staying in the dormitories.
[Totsuko gasps]
[Headmistress]
Community service,
and a written apology
every day for a month.
[Totsuko] Yes, ma'am.
Headmistress,
give Miss Sakunaga
community service as well.
Miss Sakunaga is no longer
a student here,
Sister Hiyoko.
Nevertheless,
she should make amends,
at least in some way.
[Kimi sighs]
Ave, Ave
Ave Maria
[dog barking]
[footsteps tapping]
Hmm?
[footsteps tapping]
Oh.
PLEASE TAKE WHATEVER YOU WANYes!
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[birds chirping]
[Rui groans]
[sofa thuds]
[Rui sighs]
[footsteps thudding]
One, two.
Uh.
Yo.
[finger taps]
Uh, it works.
Yes!
-[phone buzzing]
-Huh?
It's Totsuko.
KIMI AND I WON'T BE ABLE TO COME
TO PRACTICE FOR A WHILE. SORRY.
[birds chirping]
[train rumbling]
[somber piano music]
[pylons whooshing]
[somber piano music]
[students chattering]
[instructor] And plie.
[somber piano music]
Move right forward and plie.
[instructor chattering]
Good.
Tendu, fifth plie.
Rib cages in.
[birds chirping]
[instructor chattering]
[footsteps thudding]
Good.
[Totsuko's Mother] Totsuko.
[footsteps thudding]
[instructor chattering]
Welcome home.
Good to be back.
[knob clicks]
[scissors snipping]
[clock ticking]
[string creaks]
-[Sister Hiyoko] Hello there.
-Huh?
[sighs] Miss Sakunaga.
So, I'm sorry.
You mean about your field trip?
Mm-hmm.
I hadn't heard from you
in so long,
I'd almost forgotten your voice.
I'm sorry.
I was worried about you
because I know how carsick
you can get on the bus.
[wings flapping]
But I can't tell you
how happy it makes me
to know you've made a friend
worth covering for.
And it's a good thing
because I was going to give you
the scolding of your life.
[pigeons cooing]
Look!
How cute.
[instructor chattering]
I remember when
that was you, do you?
[instructor]
Tighten that core.
Mm-hmm.
[Totsuko's Mother]
Twirling round and round,
you had such fun.
Mm-hmm.
[Sister Hiyoko]
So many good books.
Sorry for taking up
so much of your time.
Oh, no, no problem.
Feel free to browse
as long as you like.
[clock ticking]
[page rustling]
[clock ticking]
[cover slams]
[Sister Hiyoko]
This one will do.
Miss Sakunaga?
I finally made my choice.
Thank you for coming.
APOLOGY LETTER
500 yen.
One of your written apologies?
Huh?
Yeah.
Speaking of those, to be honest,
the phrasing always
struck me as a little stiff.
Huh?
You could try something
a little more uplifting perhaps.
[paper rips]
I have an idea.
What if you wrote a song
about how you feel?
A song?
As I understand it, you and
Miss Higurashi are in a band?
Yeah.
Oh, I almost forgot why I came.
I wanted to ask
if I could leave some
of these flyers here
at the bookstore,
ST. VALENTINE'S FESif it's not too much trouble.
I got distracted by
the wonderful collection
you have in here.
St. Valentine's Festival.
[Sister Hiyoko]
The same one we have every year.
You remember, don't you?
[Kimi] Yeah.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Here's another idea.
Why don't you and Miss Higurashi
perform there?
[Kimi] I, um...
Alumni are welcome to
participate too, you know.
[Kimi] Except I'm not an alum.
[Sister Hiyoko] I'd say you
graduated from our school,
in your own time and
your own way.
Miss Sakunaga,
for what it's worth,
there are a lot of other
students who looked up to you,
and I believe they'd all love
to see how well you're doing.
Yes, you lied.
You told your grandmother
a story,
and you snuck into the dorm.
That's a sin, but it's also
not entirely a sin
at the same time because you
were trying to be considerate.
But that lie hurt you
a little too, didn't it?
Come back again soon, honey!
[Sister Hiyoko] No matter how
many mistakes we make,
we can always try again.
And don't forget, you can text
us if you need anything.
Isaiah chapter 43,
verse four tells us this.
"Because you are precious
and honored in my sight,
I have loved you."
[somber music]
[tongs creak]
There.
I can't believe we're almost
done with our last day.
Hmm.
[boat horn honking]
[Totsuko gasps]
ST. VALENTINE'S FESSister Hiyoko says
she thinks we should play.
What?
As long as the songs you're
singing are hymns, why not?
Yeah.
No way!
[somber keyboard music]
[buttons click]
[stool legs thud]
[somber keyboard music]
[button clicks]
[somber instrumental music]
[door creaks]
[Totsuko] Rui!
[Rui gasps]
[footsteps thudding]
Long time no see!
Yeah!
[Rui laughs]
I missed you two so much!
It's been so long.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yes!
Yeah!
-So how's everything?
-[Totsuko giggles]
[Rui] A whole month of
community service, wow.
I wrote a whole lot
of apology letters too.
Also, I think I might have
finished the "Planet" song,
or at least the next part of it.
How about you?
[Rui] Cram school,
practice tests.
Oh, but you know
that song Kimi wrote?
I added a few phrases to it.
[button clicks]
Now I'm embarrassed.
[somber instrumental music]
La, la, la, la
La, la, la
I don't know,
it sounded kind of sad, so...
La, la, la, la, la
La, la
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
Pretty huh?
Hmm.
Hmm.
[Totsuko]
Kind of looks like Rui.
Cute puppy.
I know.
Why don't we give this
to Rui as a present?
For Christmas.
[solemn violin music]
Hmm, what do you think?
[solemn violin music]
[bells chiming]
Kimi wrote a beautiful song,
and Rui did too.
And the colors I can feel
from her, they were almost--
[Saku] Togo's spicy pot roast.
-You still have that stuff?
-Mm-hmm.
-Too beautiful!
-...ramen she gave me, too.
-[gasps] Really?
-Mm-hmm.
[solemn violin music]
[bells chiming softly]
[Totsuko gasps]
[Totsuko exhales]
Jingle Bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh
Ta-da, yay!
[hands clapping]
Now, let practice begin.
[car engine humming]
[water splashing]
[energetic pop music]
[Rui] Oh, Totsuko, try turning
on this dial a little bit
during those eight bars
at the end of the bridge.
[Totsuko] This one?
-You sure I'll remember?
-Let's put a sticker on it.
[Totsuko giggles]
Look at the snow.
It's so pretty.
[Kimi] Maybe some of it
will stick tonight.
[gasps] That'd be nice.
[phone buzzes]
Oh no, the ferry's canceled.
[alarm beeping]
PORK BROTH RAMEN
[Sumika]
Thanks, Totsuko.
Bon apptit.
[mouth blowing]
[mouth slurping]
Mm.
-[phone buzzes]
-Hm?
Huh?
Everything okay?
Oh, yeah, it's just Totsuko is,
there's a lot of snow,
so she won't be able
to make it back tonight.
TOTSUKO:
ALL FERRIES HAVE BEEN CANCELED.
SHIHO: USE A STUFFED ANIMAL
IN HER PLACE?
Oh, oh, no.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Miss Yatsushika?
Would you please call
Miss Higurashi for me?
[ringtone music]
Oh, hey, Sumika,
I just wanted to let you--
[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi,
this is Sister Hiyoko.
[gasps] Hello, sister.
You can't come back due
to the snow, correct?
You're not alone, are you?
No, I'm not.
I'm with Miss Sakunaga
and another bandmate.
So...
Are you safe?
Oh yeah, we're fine here,
I promise.
But there's no ferry.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to get stuck here.
[beads rattle]
-You're at training.
-Huh?
You're at an overnight
training camp.
-You'll be back tomorrow.
-Training camp.
I believe there's a reason
you're all there tonight.
And I hope you believe it too.
So, please, don't blame
yourselves for the weather.
Pass that along to
Miss Sakunaga, would you?
And your other friend as well.
As for the rest, leave it to me.
[Rui] Training camp.
Well, that's every blanket
I could get my hands on.
It should be enough to
get us through the night.
Thanks a lot, Rui.
Of course,
I'll camp out with you.
-What?
-Huh?
No, why? You should
sleep in your own bed.
-No!
-[Totsuko gasps]
I can't leave you two
alone out here.
Besides, it's training camp.
[snow smacking]
Yeah, uh-huh.
Yeah, we'll be fine.
Promise, I've got
my friends with me.
So tonight we're having
a training camp.
[Rui's Mother]
Won't you get cold?
We'll be alright.
I brought a bunch of stuff
from the house.
Oh, when'd you do that?
Alright then.
We'll be inside the old church.
Just do what you can
to stay warm.
Okay, I will, Mom, bye. [groans]
Hmm.
[footsteps thudding]
[Rui gasps]
[match strikes]
[flames crackle]
[candle stand clanks]
[soft instrumental music]
[flames crackling]
[Rui] So what are your plans
for next year?
What do you mean?
Well, for me,
I'm headed off to college.
See, it's kind of expected
in my family
that you'll be a doctor
when you grow up.
I can't be the one
who breaks tradition.
The truth is, my family
doesn't know about our band.
It's a secret.
They don't even know
I'm into music.
I don't know how to tell them.
We have a legacy,
and I have to keep it going.
I don't want them to worry.
So when I go to town
for cram school, I go shopping
for equipment at whatever
secondhand stores I can find.
And I stash it all here.
Whenever I saw you, playing
your guitar at the bookstore,
I'd stop to watch.
I was so nervous.
But I'm glad I finally had
the courage to talk to you.
This band has been my happiness.
Well, I hadn't really
thought about it yet,
what my future holds.
I think I did things
in the wrong order, maybe.
I left home with my brother,
but thankfully our grandma
took us in and raised us.
She's so good.
She really did right by us.
I don't wanna let her down.
She thinks I'm such
a good girl, but... I'm not.
I ran away instead of
telling her the truth.
[Rui] Do you regret it,
dropping out?
I don't know.
But that was
the decision I made.
Now I just have to find a way
to live with myself.
You're so beautiful, Kimi,
and so are you, Rui.
Your colors are gentle
and serene.
You see, I have a tendency
to see people as colors.
I try to keep it a secret so
people don't think I'm weird.
What does that mean exactly?
[Totsuko] Well, your color is
green, and Kimi's is blue.
I can see all
the beautiful colors
that each person embodies.
Or actually I feel them.
[Rui] That's amazing.
Look at us, we're like soulmates
sharing our secrets.
[soft instrumental music]
[all laughing]
[Totsuko]
You're a poet, Rui. [laughs]
Oh, almost forgot.
Let's check the weather.
[static buzzing]
Come on.
Tough to get a signal out here.
[static buzzing]
[radio announcer]
Only the classics.
[soft classical music]
[Totsuko gasps]
Is something wrong?
-It's "Giselle".
-[Rui] You know this song?
Yeah, I dream about it.
I took ballet when I was little.
There was a class
downstairs from us.
I wasn't very good at it,
though,
that's probably why I quit.
But I always wanted
to dance to this song.
Okay then, let's see it.
I think I can play some of this.
[soft classical music]
[soft theremin music]
[flame crackles]
[solemn theremin music]
[footsteps thud softly]
[solemn theremin music]
[laughs]
Something like that, anyway.
I told you I wasn't very good.
I never really learned that one.
I just remember watching it.
-[Rui] Like playing by ear?
-Yeah.
[hands clap softly]
[Kimi]
Hold on, I wanna try too.
[solemn instrumental music]
[flame crackling]
[flame snuffing]
[blanket rustling]
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps thudding]
[snow crunching]
[footsteps thudding]
Oh.
[Totsuko] Thank you
for your help yesterday.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Of course, how'd it go?
Training camp.
[Totsuko] Yeah, well,
I think I understand now.
Accept the things
I can't change.
And find the courage to
change the things
that I can.
Sorry for keeping secrets.
Sorry for worrying you.
I'm still gonna go to college.
I hid some things from you,
I'm so sorry.
But I really love music.
I made some new friends.
And we started a band.
[footsteps tapping]
And we're going to perform.
I can't tell you
how much fun it is.
Would you like to come watch?
Please come see us play.
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
BAND NAME: WHITE CAT HALL BAND
[birds chirping]
[students chattering]
VALENTINE'S FESHere, take one of these.
[laughs] Take a picture.
[quirky music]
-Behold!
-[Rui] Hey look.
I set up a new account
for the band.
-What do you think?
-[Totsuko] Wow, that's cool.
White Cat Hall.
So, can I put our song up there?
Huh?
You wanna put it on
the internet, our music?
Well, yeah, of course I do.
I want people to hear
what we've made.
Wow, that's amazing.
Right, Kimi?
Huh, what's wrong?
-Am I doing the right thing?
-Huh?
I mean, I dropped out of school.
Is it right for me to be
performing at this festival?
What in the world
are you talking about?
You're already here and
you got all dressed up.
Yeah, and it's not like I was
-ever a student here.
-Now.
[students]
Welcome back, Kimi!
We missed you.
How's it going?
Whoa, you're outfit's so cool.
Sorry I left without
saying anything.
And for, you know, well,
coming back to perform today.
[students giggling]
We're just happy to
see you again.
[Sister Hiyoko] It's time.
Band members, please
make your way to the stage.
Sister Hiyoko,
let me introduce Rui Kagehira.
Nice to meet you,
and thank you for having us.
Oh, please,
thank you for coming.
I've been looking
forward to this.
Miss Higurashi let me hear
one of your songs already.
The one called "Written Apology:
the Good, the Beautiful,
and the Truthful."
I was particularly fond
of that guitar riff.
That muted strumming,
it truly resonated with me.
-But in the best possible--
-Sister, you know
so much about music.
[student] Excuse me, we're ready
for sound check now!
-[Rui] Coming.
-[Sister Hiyoko] Actually...
Yes?
The truth is,
when I was about your age,
I was in a rock band too.
We called it "God Almighty"
of all things.
[somber music]
[bell tolling]
If I could erase the past...
Sister, what about accepting
the things we cannot change?
[students chattering]
Coming up next, we have
a musical performance.
Please enjoy White Cat Hall!
[students applauding sparsely]
Hey, Totsuko,
what color are you?
Actually, I don't know.
That's okay.
[bell buzzing]
[Totsuko] Here we go.
[curtains humming]
[students chattering]
[lively electric guitar music]
Day after day
Time, it passes always
Go find your path now
Like the sunrise, your day
The stars up high,
up towards the sky
Sparkles above
a world of love
Together now in unity,
God Almighty
[lively electric guitar music]
There with a chained door
With the former boundaries
Shout it out from
in your heart
of screaming
Just say the words
and now it's true
I love you
[lively electric guitar music]
-Who's that boy?
-Yeah, what?
Is that Kimi?
Any idea who the other two are?
I recognize her.
She's always sitting
by herself in the chapel.
-Hmm.
-Hmm.
[students chattering]
Totsuko!
[somber keyboard music]
I'll let the light
Ignite the spark
So someone's dream
Can glow
Chase the love you seek
Let the light go
Wish inside I can
Blossom and bloom
[somber instrumental music]
The flames, they dance
And bid adieu
Softly fade
From view
Listen and you'll hear
the whispers
Secrets of the rising tides
Patience as you
stand in stillness
To hear the love song
just for you
Can you hear it now
Walk towards it somehow
The sounds of waves
reach out
Follow my voice
[button clicks]
[somber instrumental music]
[audience applauding]
[students chattering]
[lively synth music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
[lively electronic music]
I wanted to know you
the minute I saw you
It hit me like lightning,
like lightning, Amen
I know that the colors
will deepen inside you
You wanted to hide
but I went out to find you
In the sky above me,
I want to see you glow, yeah
Shining right above me,
I want to see you glow
In the sky above me,
I want to see you glow, yeah
Shining, shining,
shining, shining
I wanna see, I wanna see,
I wanna see you glow
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laughs like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand and hand
and now in this world, Amen
[lively electronic music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laugh like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand in hand
and now in this world, Amen
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laughs like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand in hand
and now in this world, Amen
[lively electronic music]
[audience cheering]
Huh?
[audience cheering]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
[solemn theremin music]
There.
[up-tempo theremin music]
[clothes rustling]
[up-tempo theremin music]
[Totsuko panting]
[students] Bye!
[students shouting]
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
[water splashing]
Is it okay that
we didn't go see him off?
[Kimi] We'll see him again soon.
We will?
Yeah.
[water splashing]
I did have fun.

WHITE CAT HALL BAND
[Rui] Great,
is the tape rolling?
Yep, let's do it.
Ready?
[both] One, two.
[up-tempo pop music]
I wanted to know you
from the minute I saw you
It hit me like lightning,
like lightning, Amen
I know there are colors
you're keeping inside you
You wanted to hide,
but I went out to find you
In the sky above me,
I wanna see you glow, yeah
Shining right above me,
I wanna see you glow
In the sky above me,
I wanna see you glow, yeah
Shining, shining,
shining, shining
Wanna see you, wanna see you,
wanna see you glow
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen

Heavenly Father, I ask that
you grant me the serenity
to accept the things that I,
that I cannot change.
[fingers tap]
Amen.
[somber piano music]
[instructor]
Nice port de bras.
Don't forget to pull up.
Brush through first.
Turn out, no single feet.
Listen to the beat of the music.
Heels on the ground.
Straighten those legs.
[Totsuko] Living things have
developed the ability
to perceive color because of
eons and eons of evolution.
Objects absorb certain parts
of light and reflect others.
And what's reflected travels
through the retina
into the brain.
So all colors are
waves of light.
Red apples,
green leaves,
blue fish.
Depending on the
wavelength of the light,
we see different colors.
Supposedly.
Because for me,
colors can be different.
I see what other people see,
but I feel something else.
[somber piano music]
TOTSUKO HIGURASHI
I wanna be pink like you are.
How'd you get to be so orange?
Oh, what a pretty blue.
Just like butterflies and bees
find their way
to pretty flowers,
or dolphins and the way
they hear things humans can't.
Colors can be felt
instead of seen.
When I feel a pretty color,
my heart starts racing.
[somber piano music]
I don't know how to explain it,
or if I can.
[somber piano music]
[camera clicks]
[somber piano music]
I can't see or feel
my own color,
but I wonder what color I'd be.
[somber piano music]
[bell tolling]
[door banging]
-Morning.
-Oh, hi.
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[student] Did you hear what
happened the other day?
[student yawns]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[student laughs]
[dish clanks softly]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
[footsteps tapping softly]
[utensils clanging]
[students chattering]
[somber music]
Hmm, hmm, hmm!
[student giggles]
[Totsuko gasps]
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
Hey, morning. How are you?
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
[birds chirping]
-I'm fine.
-Are you sure?
-Hey, wait up!
-I'll get over it.
-Got ya!
-Morning!
-I'm in.
-I thought you'd say that.
[students laughing]
[students chattering]
See you after class.
[students chattering]
[birds chirping]
[bell tolling]
[bird chirping]
-[student] Oh, there's the bell.
-[Saku] Come on, hurry!
If I'm marked tardy
one more time,
I'll have to do
community service.
Oh, okay.
[students chattering]
[footsteps tapping]
-Girls, no running.
-[student] I'm sorry!
-Good morning, sister!
-Good morning.
Quiet down, no running.
[gasps] Oh.
Inside voices.
Ladies, calm down.
No running in the halls.
[students chattering]
[Saku] Toko!
[gasps] I'm coming!
[footsteps tapping]
[Totsuko panting]
I made it.
Oh, we're good.
[Sumika hums]
[student panting]
[students chattering]
[door creaks]
[Sister Juri] Stand.
[chair legs scratch]
[Sister Juri] Bow.
[students]
Good morning, sister.
Good morning, everyone.
[bee buzzing]
[solemn instrumental music]
[footsteps tapping]
How'd you do?
That quiz before
sure was a tough one.
[Kimi] Yeah,
it was a tough one.
Wow, even for you?
[laughs] Yes, even for me.
[student 1] But you got
100% on the last one.
[student 2]
And that one was hard too.
Oh, is student council today?
-[Kimi] Yeah, I think so.
-Oh, cool.
[laughs] Hey, Kimi.
We just wanted to ask you
something about choir
practice.
[student 3] Uh huh,
we'd love to get your opinion.
[Kimi] Yeah, okay,
what do you need?
[Totsuko sighs]
[wind blustering]
[solemn music]
[students chattering]
[student 3] Do you think you
could make some time?
[Kimi] Of course,
no problem.
[students chattering]
P.E.
[whistle blowing]
[students chattering]
[ball thuds]
[students chattering]
[Kimi grunts]
[students chattering]

[Totsuko gasps]
[quirky music]
So pretty.
[ball thuds]
[Totsuko groans]
[all] Toko!
[quirky music]
[students chattering]
Totsuko, are you okay?
[students gasp]
You good?
[Totsuko groans]
[all] Totsuko!
[teacher] Are you okay?
[bell tolling]
-Bye!
-See ya!
I'd take a stab at kendo.
[students chattering]
[train rumbling]
[solemn piano music]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
[dog barking]
[gate creaks]
SAKUNAGA
[Kimi] I'm home.
[Grandma] Hmm?
[solemn piano music]
[clothes rustle]
[footsteps pattering]
[chair creaks]
[beads rattle]
[beads clack]
[guitar strumming]
[pieces tap]
Mm-hmm.
[all] Huh?
You feeling okay, Toko?
[gasps] I'm fine!
I'm just feeling sparkly!
[laughs]
She got hit harder
than I thought.
-I hate dodgeball.
-Mm-hmm, same.
[playful music]
[energy whirring]
Hey, you okay?
-I'm sorry.
-[Totsuko] I'm fine.
Really,
there's no need to worry.
Thanks, though.
[Totsuko laughs]
[curtains clatter]
[all] Huh?
[water splashing]
[footsteps tapping]
[water splashing]
[students chattering]
[Totsuko]
Where's Miss Sakunaga?
She's not here.
[students chattering]
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in praise
[student 1] Practice is
somewhere else today, right?
-[student 2] Is it?
-Oh, yeah.
-Sister said so, remember?
-I forgot.
Excuse me.
I haven't seen
Kimi Sakunaga lately.
Do you know if she's been
on vacation or something?
Didn't you hear?
Kimi dropped out of school.
[footsteps tapping]
We were pretty
shocked by it too.
[Totsuko] Why?
I heard she talked back
to one of the sisters.
[student 2] I heard they found
out she had a boyfriend.
There are a bunch
of different rumors.
But nobody really knows.
The choir's sure gonna miss her
at the concert
we have coming up.
So what's she doing now?
Do you know?
[muffled students chattering]
[student whispering] Hey, I
think I saw Kimi the other day.
[student 2] Really?
Like no way, where?
[student 1] Downtown
at this little bookstore.
Looked like she was
working at the register.
[train rumbling]
[gentle music]
BOOKSTORE
[bell ringing]
[train engine humming]
[footsteps tapping]
[doors humming]
[gentle music]
[footsteps tapping]
[doors humming]
[people chattering]
[Totsuko groans]
Heavenly Father, I ask that
you grant me serenity.
The serenity to accept
the things,
which I know that I will
never be able to change.
Amen.
[Sister Hiyoko] Amen.
[Totsuko] Sister Hiyoko.
Miss Higurashi,
I couldn't help but notice
you're forgetting
some of the serenity prayer.
It also asks God for the courage
to change the things we can
and for the wisdom
to know the difference.
Accepting what we cannot change
is also important,
but that's only part of it.
Do you understand?
Yeah.
I just...
Right now, I'm asking God
for some peace of mind.
I'm sorry,
is something troubling you?
-Do you need to confess?
-Oh, no.
Thank you, Sister Hiyoko.
You have a beautiful color.
Ah, sorry, I just mean...
No, it's nothing, forgive me.
[Totsuko whimpers]
[footsteps thud]
[somber music]
-[Saku] Same thing as always.
-[Shiho] That's fine with me.
-Hmm?
-Mm, yummy.
Toko, what's the matter?
-Something happen?
-Oh!
No, everything's good here.
You sure?
BISCUIT-MANJU
-[Saku] Here, take one.
-[Shiho] They're good.
Thank you all.
You're the sisters
of the forest.
[all] Huh?
[Totsuko]
Just, I meant your colors.
-Hmm?
-I mean, your auras are so...
They're so soft
and calm and earthy.
[Sumika] You mean ordinary?
Ah.
Hey, Grandma, I'm heading out.
Have a nice day, sweetie.
And don't forget your lunch,
it's on the table.
Oh, thanks.
[passenger] We need soy sauce.
Oh, and soup.
[train rumbling]
[footsteps thudding]
[birds chirping]
WHITE CAT HALL
[footsteps thudding]
[footsteps thudding]
[Kimi sighs]
Fair thee well and go with God.
[students chattering]
So what are we doing today?
I'm up for just about anything.
-I'll catch up.
-Bye!
[student]
I'll just see you later, okay?
[student 2] Yeah.
[student 3] Thanks, goodbye!
[footsteps tapping]
[guitar strumming]
[somber music]
[children shouting]
Wait, slow down!
[clerk] Oh, I'm sorry.
I don't have the box
for this one.
[Rui] Oh, that's okay.
I don't need it.
You sure?
Because I have newer ones
that are better.
-I'm good.
-Okay.
[Rui] Thank you.
[somber music]
SECOND-HAND SHOP
[cat meows]
[footsteps thudding]
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[Kimi] Welcome.
[clock ticking]
[footsteps thudding]
Where are you off to, huh?
[giggles]
You on a kitty-cat adventure?
Oh, me?
I'm just out here
trying to find someone.
[books clacking]
[Kimi sighs]
[clock ticking]
[footsteps tapping]
[books thud]
[playful music]
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps tapping]
[playful music]
USED BOOKS SALE
[Totsuko] Gotcha.
[gasps] A bookstore?
[guitar strumming]
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
That song,
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
[footsteps thudding]
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
Found you.
[guitar strumming]
[Kimi humming]
[Kimi gasps]
Uh, sorry, I...
I was just looking for...
[Totsuko groans]
EASY PIANO PIECES NO. 1
Found you.
This is the one,
such a tough book to find.
[gasps] That's such a relief.
[sighs] Yeah,
must be my lucky day.
Just this, please.
So you play piano?
The piano?
Oh, yes.
And it looks like
you play the guitar?
[Kimi] Yeah, just practicing.
[Totsuko] Wow, that's cool.
Oh, by the way, sorry
about the dodgeball incident.
No, don't mention it.
You know,
that song you were playing?
I love it.
We sang it in choir
all the time.
Yeah.
[tense music]
So are you really not
coming back to school?
[Kimi groans]
[Totsuko] Sorry.
[Rui] Hey, excuse me.
Oh, yes?
Sorry to interrupt,
but are you two in a band?
[gasps] A band?
You think we look like
bandmates?
I don't know.
You're always playing that
guitar, so it got me thinking.
[energy whirring]
Sorry to spring this on you.
I've been wanting to ask
for a while.
[Totsuko gasps]
[energy whirring]
Actually, we...
We just started looking for
new band members.
What do you say?
Would you have
any interest in joining us?
[playful piano music]
Oh, nevermind, forget I asked.
Besides we're not even, I mean,
it's not even a band yet.
Wait, and you're a boy, too!
-Oh, holy mother!
-[coin purse clatters]
[Rui] Can I?
I guess.
[gasps] Miss Sakunaga,
I'm so sorry.
It's okay, you don't have to
if you don't want to.
I just,
I thought it would be fun and--
I'd love to.
[Totsuko gasps]
[water rushing]
[birds cawing]
[playful piano music]
[Kimi] Hey, look outside.
It's beautiful, huh?
Oh, yeah.
[Kimi] What's wrong?
I think I might be
a little bit seasick.
Are you okay?
I'm fine.
I have water.
You think you should lie down?
I can do that?
Mm-hmm.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry.
No signal?
[water splashing]
[seagulls cawing]
Hey!
Hi!
[laughs] Hey!
It's great to see you two.
I almost didn't think
you'd come.
[Kimi] We would've called,
but we didn't have reception.
Are you feeling okay there?
Yeah.
I think I just need
a little air.
[seagulls cawing]
Welcome.
Come on in.
It was a church.
They don't use it
for that anymore,
but it's been preserved for
its historical significance.
And they let me use it
for whatever I want.
As long as I keep it clean.
I just have to keep it
on the down low.
[somber piano music]
[footsteps thudding]
[floor creaking]
-It's beautiful.
-I know, right?
Oh, thanks for sharing it
with us.
[somber piano music]
[Totsuko gasps softly]
[footsteps thudding]
[somber piano music]
[lively whirring music]
[Rui breathes deeply]
[somber whirring music]
[zipper clatters]
[somber whirring music]
[pieces clack]
[instrument thuds]
[somber electric guitar music]
[Totsuko gasps]
[somber electric guitar music]
Oh.
[somber electric guitar music]
SUPER NICE ICE CREAM
-[Totsuko] Vanilla.
-[Kimi] Toasted almond.
[Rui] Mint chocolate chip.
Super ice cream cone.
What?
The band name?
Yeah.
Huh, it's certainly playful.
Uh-huh, but super.
Makes it feel strong.
Oh, and what instrument
were you playing?
-[Rui] A theremin.
-Cool.
[water splashing]
[quirky music]
[Totsuko] I'm sorry, I don't
know how to talk to boys.
[Rui] You're doing fine.
Just say what feels natural.
[Totsuko] I don't know
what feels natural though.
Well, whatever you wanna say.
And that's okay?
[Rui] Yeah, simple as that.
[Totsuko] Okay, then.
Is...
Is it alright
if I call you "Kimi"?
Of course.
[Totsuko gasps]
[Totsuko]
And is "Rui" okay?
I'd like that.
Oh.
The ferry's gonna be here
any minute.
[ferry engine humming]
Hey, Kimi.
Huh?
I have a confession.
I'm actually
not very good at piano.
I'm gonna disappoint you,
I know it.
I'm only a beginner
at guitar myself.
It's okay.
My big brother kind of
left it behind.
I didn't know you had a brother.
Mm-hmm, but he moved out
when he got a job.
[Totsuko gasps]
Don't worry,
I'll practice before next week.
If we work hard,
we can play any song we want.
Just like a real band.
Not that I know what
a real band is like. [laughs]
[somber music]
Thanks, Kimi.
See ya.
-Are you alright?
-Mm-hmm.
Bye. [groans]
[somber music]
Later.
[somber music]
[train rumbling]
-[passenger 1] What, no way.
-[passenger 2] Yes, way.
It was probably just a bobcat.
It wasn't a bobcat, silly.
-Okay, I believe you.
-Do you?
[vegetables crunch]
[water bubbling]
Hmm.
-[Kimi] I'm home.
-Welcome back.
Dinner won't be for a while yet.
Hmm.
How was your day?
Did you have choir practice?
No, not today, something else.
Oh?
-I'm gonna go change.
-Okay.
Oh, that tastes good.
Kimi, you're not eating.
Should I dish it up for you?
Actually, Grandma,
I wanted to, uh...
-Yes?
-Oh, it's nothing.
Nevermind.
Oh, that's right, your uniform.
You'll need
your summer one soon.
I'll get it, and we'll have
your spring one cleaned.
Hmm.
Can't believe my little Kimi
is wearing
the same uniform I wore.
Hmm, mm-hmm.
[energy whirring softly]
Rui's theremin.
I wonder if he can see sound.
[bristles scratching]
[Rui] Hey,
I wanna play originals.
[Totsuko] What?
You mean you want us
to write music?
[Rui] Yes.
Can we?
Can we do that?
I think we can, yeah.
I would love to hear you
play a song that you wrote.
You can write some songs, too.
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps tapping]
Kimi, do you want
to write music?
I mean, I've thought about it,
but I'd like to try.
[Totsuko] Wow, okay.
So much pressure.
[Kimi] You're gonna do it too?
[Totsuko] Well...
What's the matter,
are you alright?
[Rui] Yeah, everything's fine.
Anyway,
I'll see you guys next week.
[footsteps tapping]
[ferry engine humming]
[Totsuko]
You think that was his mom?
Maybe he just wasn't comfortable
letting her see us.
But I guess that's probably
for the best anyway.
It's against school rules
to spend time with boys.
I told my roommates
we formed an all-girls band,
so they wouldn't find out.
Oh, that means I told a lie!
I'm gonna need to
go to confession.
Okay, I'll head to the chapel
as soon as I can.
Sorry, I'm talking about school,
that's not fair.
[laughs] It's okay.
[wind howling]
If I were to write a song...
[soft synth music]
[video narration] There are
many different types...
[Totsuko]
I'd want to find a way
to express Kimi's colors
through sound.
[video narration continues] The
largest celestial bodies in our
solar system are the eight
planets and beautiful Earth.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM. KIMI'S COLOR.
[narrator 2]
Colors so vibrant they can--
[narrator 1] Their orbital
path follows the sun.
-[narrator 2] Round and round.
-[narrator 1] This is called--
[narrator 2] They circle around
and round and round the sun.
[Totsuko] Beautiful.
[narrator 1]
They orbit the sun...
[overlapping narration]
[Totsuko]
It's truly beautiful.
[somber chiming music]
[narration continues] It all
started with a massive explosion
approximately
4.6 billion years ago.
[desk slams]
[students chatter]
[Totsuko gasps]
Huh, huh?
[button clicks]
[Totsuko chuckles]
[students chattering]
[teeth chomping]
[solemn music]
Kimi's color
really is beautiful.
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Vibrant and exciting.
[solemn music]
[globe clicking]
[solemn music]
[Totsuko gasps]
Like a spinning planet.
[window slides]
[solemn music]
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Sun and Jupiter
and Saturn, Amen
[Sister Hiyoko chuckles]
[gasps] Sister Hiyoko!
Miss Higurashi,
school's out for today.
Oh, right, sorry.
I'll head out soon,
in just a minute.
[footsteps tapping]
I could hear you raising
your voice in prayer, though.
Amen.
Amen.
No, it was nothing. [chuckles]
Goodbye, have a nice day.
[footsteps tapping]
[Totsuko hums]
[soft keyboard music]
[soft keyboard music]
[Totsuko] Huh.
This sounds like Rui's colors.
And this sounds like Kimi's.
[soft keyboard music]
[students laughing]
[Saku] Come on,
you gotta do it again.
Fine.
Okay, go.
-Fair thee well.
-That's so good.
Let's listen back.
-What are you doing?
-Hmm?
Practicing our imitations.
Listen to this one,
Sumika's Sister Juri.
[Sumika] Fair thee well!
[students laughing]
You sound just like her.
My phone, it records.
[Saku] Totsuko,
come on, get over here.
[Sumika] Yeah,
you're good at this.
Maybe some other time.
[Sumika]
Saku, do Sister Hiyoko next.
[Saku] Okay, okay.
I'll give it a try.
Wait,
let me practice first though.
[Totsuko inhales]
[phone beeping]
[electric guitar strumming]
Hmm?
ONE MESSAGE
[distant dog barking]
TOTSUKO:
I WROTE A BIT OF A SONG!
[phone buzzing]
[buttons clicking]
TOTSUKO:
I WROTE A BIT OF A SONG!
Wow, already?
That's amazing.
[buttons slicking]
SENDER: ME
[Totsuko clears throat]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
La, la, la, la, la,
la, la, la, la, la
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
La, la, la, la, la, la, la,
la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la
Hmm.
[Saku] No running in the halls!
[students laughing]
[Sister Hiyoko gasps]
[Kimi gasps]
[Rui gasps]
[Totsuko groans]
THAT WAS SAKU'S VOICE
AT THE END.
[thumbs tapping]
[upbeat pop music]
KAGEHIRA MEDICAL CLINIC
Alright,
I'll write you a prescription
that should help with that.
[patient groans]
I appreciate that, doctor.
Hope you feel better soon.
[footsteps pattering]
I'm home.
Welcome back.
-No cram school today?
-Nah.
Oh, well, should I go get
something for dinner?
It's okay,
I'm not making anything special.
ENTRANCE CEREMONY
Thanks though.
[Rui's Mother]
Don't you need to study?
[Rui] I'll be fine.
The practice tests weren't bad.
[Rui's Mother]
Can't be too careful.
Besides, we're counting on you
to take over the clinic.
[vegetables crunching]
Yeah, I know.
[chuckles]
[food sizzles]
[dish thuds]
[Grandma] Shiro isn't coming
home for the festival this year.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
He said he was going to
meet his girlfriend's family.
Hmm.
Well, your summer break
starts soon too,
doesn't it?
[spoon taps]
[Kimi] Mm-hmm.
I wish I could take you
on a trip somewhere,
but I won't be able to
get time off work.
That's okay.
I'll be pretty busy, too.
-Oh, thanks.
-Right, choir.
That is a lot of work,
but it's in good hands with you.
The principal said so himself.
"The choir's never been better
since we put your Kimi
in charge."
I am so proud of you.
Grandma, I'm not the person
you think I am.
[balls clacking]
[birds chirping]
[birds chirping]
[footsteps tapping]
YOU CREATED A WORLD DEVOID OF
LIGHT WANDERING IN CIRCLES
[Kimi humming]
[electric guitar strumming]
SEARCHING FOR A PATH TO WALK ON
[door clicks]
[Rui] Hi, Kimi.
[clock ticking]
I was just writing a song.
Really, I haven't even started.
That's awesome.
I'll send it to you soon.
I want Totsuko to hear it too.
But it's not a very happy song.
[guitar strumming]
[footsteps thudding]
-[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi?
-Yes, Sister Hiyoko?
-Do you mind if I join you?
-Oh, of course, sit down.
Are you staying in
the dorms all summer
or just for the start?
Oh, yeah, all summer.
There's something I wanna do.
That sounds nice.
And there's certainly nothing
wrong with you staying here.
May I ask you
what you want to do?
Oh, well, I'm writing a song.
[pages rustling]
-Oh, is it a new hymn?
-No, not a hymn.
I mean, it's nothing
as special as that.
SWEET, KIN PLANETS UP,
ORBITING. AMEN!
It's just about my feelings.
It's a song about being happy.
You know,
if the music celebrates
the good, the beautiful,
or the truthful, I think
it can be considered a hymn.
Well, what about sad songs
about sorrow and suffering?
Are they hymns too?
Any song where
you show your heart,
I believe is also a hymn.
Acceptance is important.
I trust that song will
keep your feelings safe,
Miss Higurashi.
[nails scratch softly]
The truth is, I started a band!
Oh.
[bell tolling]
Hmm.
[all] My help
comes from the Lord
who made Heaven and Earth.
The Lord is your keeper and
your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you
by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you
from evil and keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out
and your coming in.
[bell tolling]
From this time on
and forevermore.
IROHA-ZAKA MAP
[Sumika]
Oh, the Irohazaka Road is crazy.
It winds all over the place.
[Totsuko] And we have to take
the bus the whole way?
Bus. [groans]
Come on,
this can't be real, can it?
[students groan]
[chair creaks]
[Grandma] Here you are.
Tempura soba.
Thank you for waiting.
[student] Oh, nice.
We're in the same group
for the field trip.
Uh-huh, yeah, I saw that.
RAINBOW LIGHT GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL
FIELD TRIP TO NIKKO
[student] Oh, what do you think
we'll see, monkeys?
[student 2]
Monkeys are so cute.
[student 1] You think we'll get
to take pictures with them?
[somber instrumental music]
[water splashing]
[somber instrumental music]
[Totsuko] Kimi?
[Kimi gasps]
Hi, Totsuko.
Are you okay?
[somber instrumental music]
[lights buzzing]
[somber instrumental music]
[Totsuko giggles]
I think she likes you.
[Totsuko] You think so?
[cat meows]
Meow to you too!
Hey, Kimi, I'm sorry
to keep asking you this,
but is everything okay?
Hmm-hmm.
Oh, by the way,
next week we have a--
[Kimi] The field trip, right?
I know.
[Totsuko] Yeah.
[Kimi] Totsuko, you promise
not to judge me?
Of course.
It's my grandma.
I haven't told her the truth yet
about dropping out.
[leaves rustling]
Maybe I should just run away.
Come back after the field trip.
I don't know.
I guess
I'm just scared to tell her.
You know?
I just don't wanna hurt her.
[grass crunches]
[footsteps pattering]
Oh, I've gotta go.
Work to do.
Hmm.
[door bangs]
[footsteps pattering]
Welcome!
[door creaks]
[Totsuko groans]
Are you gonna be okay, Toko?
You want anything?
We can buy you souvenirs.
Oh, okay.
Well, we're headed out then.
Help yourself to
the snacks in my desk.
There's some good stuff
in there.
Thanks.
Have fun.
[all] Feel better soon, Totsuko.
[weakly] See you guys soon.
[friends groan]
[door creaks]
[Saku] I can't believe
she's missing the field trip.
[Sumika] Yeah.
[bed creaks]
Oh Lord, please forgive me.
[air whooshing]
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
[Totsuko] Mars, Earth,
Mercury, and Venus, Amen.
[Kimi] Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen.
[insects chirring]
[door creaks]
Welcome to the secret garden.
[whispering] Be very quiet.
[playful music]
[footsteps thudding]
[twig snaps]
Huh?
[air whooshing]
[Totsuko gasps]
[whispers] Cat.
[window slides]
[Kimi meows]
[playful music]
[Kimi groans softly]
[footsteps pattering]
[playful music]
[Totsuko groans]
[Totsuko sighs]
[playful music]
TOTSUKO HIGURASHI: IN RESIDENCE
[Kimi groans]
[water splashing]
[feet thud]
We made it, thanks a lot.
Your room is so cute.
Kimi, are you hungry?
Huh?
No, I'm okay.
Oh, okay.
Well, I told everyone
I had a stomach ache,
which means
all I've had is oatmeal.
[Kimi gasps]
Oh, then you
must be hungry, Totsuko.
Let's see,
I brought a bunch of snacks.
[Totsuko gasps]
Really?
It's my way of saying thank you.
Oh, you shouldn't have.
Totsuko, I'm sorry.
No, this is great.
Now I don't have to
ride the bus.
If I had gone on the field trip,
I think I might have actually
gotten sick. [groans]
[Totsuko gasps]
I almost forgot.
Saku left me a bunch of snacks
we can have, too.
We can have a party!
[Kimi] Okay.
[gentle synth music]
[knocking at door]
[both gasping]
[Totsuko gasps]
[knocking at door]
[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi?
It's Sister Hiyoko.
[Totsuko whimpers]
[objects crash]
[sheets rustle]
[door creaks]
Yes?
I could have sworn
I was hearing voices.
Sorry, just talking to myself.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Shouldn't you be resting?
Oh, yes, but the dishes.
Huh.
You could have left those
in the hallway
and gone back to bed.
Oh, nevermind though.
How are you feeling?
[Totsuko] Still not great.
[Sister Juri] We should take you
to the doctor tomorrow.
[Totsuko]
We don't need to do that.
I'm already feeling much better.
[Sister Juri] It won't hurt to
get an exam either way.
[Totsuko gasps]
Was there anything else?
[gasps] Not at all.
[Totsuko grunts]
[both grunting anxiously]
[Sister Juri] Well, you make
sure to get some rest, alright?
Right.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Have a good night.
[footsteps thudding]
Good night.
[footsteps thudding]
See you tomorrow.
[footsteps patter]
[door creaks]
[door bangs]
Now what am I gonna do?
I keep on lying.
-[Kimi] Totsuko.
-Yeah?
Oh, it'll be fine.
I'll talk about it
in confession.
-[Totsuko] Ow.
-[Kimi] Sorry.
[Totsuko giggles]
Little cramped, huh?
[chuckles] Are you okay, Kimi?
Do you have enough covers?
Hey, what's carved into
the bed there?
Huh?
Oh, that?
I don't know.
It was there when I moved in,
not sure why.
I pray to it every night
before I go to sleep.
God almighty.
Hmm?
[groans] I'm sorry, Totsuko.
Why?
Because I made you lie
to the sisters.
And I...
Kimi, I'm having so much fun,
and I'm really happy.
I promise.
[bed creaks]
And you know, you don't
have to tell me anything
unless you want to.
But if you ask me, I think
you should talk to your grandma.
And if it's scary, I can
come along with you if you want.
No, I'll talk to her
as soon as I get back.
Thanks, Totsuko.
[insects chirring]
[Kimi whispering] Totsuko.
-What's wrong, Kimi?
-I have to pee.
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
Hmm?
[insects chirring]
[footsteps thudding]
[solemn organ music]
Immaculate Mary
Your praises we sing
Your reign
[clothes rustling]
Excuse me, I was the one
who invited her to sleep over,
and to do it
during the school trip.
Kimi is-- Miss Sakunaga
didn't do anything wrong.
Miss Higurashi,
regardless of the reason,
outsiders are strictly
prohibited
from staying in the dormitories.
[Totsuko gasps]
[Headmistress]
Community service,
and a written apology
every day for a month.
[Totsuko] Yes, ma'am.
Headmistress,
give Miss Sakunaga
community service as well.
Miss Sakunaga is no longer
a student here,
Sister Hiyoko.
Nevertheless,
she should make amends,
at least in some way.
[Kimi sighs]
Ave, Ave
Ave Maria
[dog barking]
[footsteps tapping]
Hmm?
[footsteps tapping]
Oh.
PLEASE TAKE WHATEVER YOU WANYes!
[door creaks]
[footsteps thudding]
[birds chirping]
[Rui groans]
[sofa thuds]
[Rui sighs]
[footsteps thudding]
One, two.
Uh.
Yo.
[finger taps]
Uh, it works.
Yes!
-[phone buzzing]
-Huh?
It's Totsuko.
KIMI AND I WON'T BE ABLE TO COME
TO PRACTICE FOR A WHILE. SORRY.
[birds chirping]
[train rumbling]
[somber piano music]
[pylons whooshing]
[somber piano music]
[students chattering]
[instructor] And plie.
[somber piano music]
Move right forward and plie.
[instructor chattering]
Good.
Tendu, fifth plie.
Rib cages in.
[birds chirping]
[instructor chattering]
[footsteps thudding]
Good.
[Totsuko's Mother] Totsuko.
[footsteps thudding]
[instructor chattering]
Welcome home.
Good to be back.
[knob clicks]
[scissors snipping]
[clock ticking]
[string creaks]
-[Sister Hiyoko] Hello there.
-Huh?
[sighs] Miss Sakunaga.
So, I'm sorry.
You mean about your field trip?
Mm-hmm.
I hadn't heard from you
in so long,
I'd almost forgotten your voice.
I'm sorry.
I was worried about you
because I know how carsick
you can get on the bus.
[wings flapping]
But I can't tell you
how happy it makes me
to know you've made a friend
worth covering for.
And it's a good thing
because I was going to give you
the scolding of your life.
[pigeons cooing]
Look!
How cute.
[instructor chattering]
I remember when
that was you, do you?
[instructor]
Tighten that core.
Mm-hmm.
[Totsuko's Mother]
Twirling round and round,
you had such fun.
Mm-hmm.
[Sister Hiyoko]
So many good books.
Sorry for taking up
so much of your time.
Oh, no, no problem.
Feel free to browse
as long as you like.
[clock ticking]
[page rustling]
[clock ticking]
[cover slams]
[Sister Hiyoko]
This one will do.
Miss Sakunaga?
I finally made my choice.
Thank you for coming.
APOLOGY LETTER
500 yen.
One of your written apologies?
Huh?
Yeah.
Speaking of those, to be honest,
the phrasing always
struck me as a little stiff.
Huh?
You could try something
a little more uplifting perhaps.
[paper rips]
I have an idea.
What if you wrote a song
about how you feel?
A song?
As I understand it, you and
Miss Higurashi are in a band?
Yeah.
Oh, I almost forgot why I came.
I wanted to ask
if I could leave some
of these flyers here
at the bookstore,
ST. VALENTINE'S FESif it's not too much trouble.
I got distracted by
the wonderful collection
you have in here.
St. Valentine's Festival.
[Sister Hiyoko]
The same one we have every year.
You remember, don't you?
[Kimi] Yeah.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Here's another idea.
Why don't you and Miss Higurashi
perform there?
[Kimi] I, um...
Alumni are welcome to
participate too, you know.
[Kimi] Except I'm not an alum.
[Sister Hiyoko] I'd say you
graduated from our school,
in your own time and
your own way.
Miss Sakunaga,
for what it's worth,
there are a lot of other
students who looked up to you,
and I believe they'd all love
to see how well you're doing.
Yes, you lied.
You told your grandmother
a story,
and you snuck into the dorm.
That's a sin, but it's also
not entirely a sin
at the same time because you
were trying to be considerate.
But that lie hurt you
a little too, didn't it?
Come back again soon, honey!
[Sister Hiyoko] No matter how
many mistakes we make,
we can always try again.
And don't forget, you can text
us if you need anything.
Isaiah chapter 43,
verse four tells us this.
"Because you are precious
and honored in my sight,
I have loved you."
[somber music]
[tongs creak]
There.
I can't believe we're almost
done with our last day.
Hmm.
[boat horn honking]
[Totsuko gasps]
ST. VALENTINE'S FESSister Hiyoko says
she thinks we should play.
What?
As long as the songs you're
singing are hymns, why not?
Yeah.
No way!
[somber keyboard music]
[buttons click]
[stool legs thud]
[somber keyboard music]
[button clicks]
[somber instrumental music]
[door creaks]
[Totsuko] Rui!
[Rui gasps]
[footsteps thudding]
Long time no see!
Yeah!
[Rui laughs]
I missed you two so much!
It's been so long.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yes!
Yeah!
-So how's everything?
-[Totsuko giggles]
[Rui] A whole month of
community service, wow.
I wrote a whole lot
of apology letters too.
Also, I think I might have
finished the "Planet" song,
or at least the next part of it.
How about you?
[Rui] Cram school,
practice tests.
Oh, but you know
that song Kimi wrote?
I added a few phrases to it.
[button clicks]
Now I'm embarrassed.
[somber instrumental music]
La, la, la, la
La, la, la
I don't know,
it sounded kind of sad, so...
La, la, la, la, la
La, la
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
La, da, da, da,
da, da, da, da
Pretty huh?
Hmm.
Hmm.
[Totsuko]
Kind of looks like Rui.
Cute puppy.
I know.
Why don't we give this
to Rui as a present?
For Christmas.
[solemn violin music]
Hmm, what do you think?
[solemn violin music]
[bells chiming]
Kimi wrote a beautiful song,
and Rui did too.
And the colors I can feel
from her, they were almost--
[Saku] Togo's spicy pot roast.
-You still have that stuff?
-Mm-hmm.
-Too beautiful!
-...ramen she gave me, too.
-[gasps] Really?
-Mm-hmm.
[solemn violin music]
[bells chiming softly]
[Totsuko gasps]
[Totsuko exhales]
Jingle Bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh
Ta-da, yay!
[hands clapping]
Now, let practice begin.
[car engine humming]
[water splashing]
[energetic pop music]
[Rui] Oh, Totsuko, try turning
on this dial a little bit
during those eight bars
at the end of the bridge.
[Totsuko] This one?
-You sure I'll remember?
-Let's put a sticker on it.
[Totsuko giggles]
Look at the snow.
It's so pretty.
[Kimi] Maybe some of it
will stick tonight.
[gasps] That'd be nice.
[phone buzzes]
Oh no, the ferry's canceled.
[alarm beeping]
PORK BROTH RAMEN
[Sumika]
Thanks, Totsuko.
Bon apptit.
[mouth blowing]
[mouth slurping]
Mm.
-[phone buzzes]
-Hm?
Huh?
Everything okay?
Oh, yeah, it's just Totsuko is,
there's a lot of snow,
so she won't be able
to make it back tonight.
TOTSUKO:
ALL FERRIES HAVE BEEN CANCELED.
SHIHO: USE A STUFFED ANIMAL
IN HER PLACE?
Oh, oh, no.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Miss Yatsushika?
Would you please call
Miss Higurashi for me?
[ringtone music]
Oh, hey, Sumika,
I just wanted to let you--
[Sister Hiyoko] Miss Higurashi,
this is Sister Hiyoko.
[gasps] Hello, sister.
You can't come back due
to the snow, correct?
You're not alone, are you?
No, I'm not.
I'm with Miss Sakunaga
and another bandmate.
So...
Are you safe?
Oh yeah, we're fine here,
I promise.
But there's no ferry.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to get stuck here.
[beads rattle]
-You're at training.
-Huh?
You're at an overnight
training camp.
-You'll be back tomorrow.
-Training camp.
I believe there's a reason
you're all there tonight.
And I hope you believe it too.
So, please, don't blame
yourselves for the weather.
Pass that along to
Miss Sakunaga, would you?
And your other friend as well.
As for the rest, leave it to me.
[Rui] Training camp.
Well, that's every blanket
I could get my hands on.
It should be enough to
get us through the night.
Thanks a lot, Rui.
Of course,
I'll camp out with you.
-What?
-Huh?
No, why? You should
sleep in your own bed.
-No!
-[Totsuko gasps]
I can't leave you two
alone out here.
Besides, it's training camp.
[snow smacking]
Yeah, uh-huh.
Yeah, we'll be fine.
Promise, I've got
my friends with me.
So tonight we're having
a training camp.
[Rui's Mother]
Won't you get cold?
We'll be alright.
I brought a bunch of stuff
from the house.
Oh, when'd you do that?
Alright then.
We'll be inside the old church.
Just do what you can
to stay warm.
Okay, I will, Mom, bye. [groans]
Hmm.
[footsteps thudding]
[Rui gasps]
[match strikes]
[flames crackle]
[candle stand clanks]
[soft instrumental music]
[flames crackling]
[Rui] So what are your plans
for next year?
What do you mean?
Well, for me,
I'm headed off to college.
See, it's kind of expected
in my family
that you'll be a doctor
when you grow up.
I can't be the one
who breaks tradition.
The truth is, my family
doesn't know about our band.
It's a secret.
They don't even know
I'm into music.
I don't know how to tell them.
We have a legacy,
and I have to keep it going.
I don't want them to worry.
So when I go to town
for cram school, I go shopping
for equipment at whatever
secondhand stores I can find.
And I stash it all here.
Whenever I saw you, playing
your guitar at the bookstore,
I'd stop to watch.
I was so nervous.
But I'm glad I finally had
the courage to talk to you.
This band has been my happiness.
Well, I hadn't really
thought about it yet,
what my future holds.
I think I did things
in the wrong order, maybe.
I left home with my brother,
but thankfully our grandma
took us in and raised us.
She's so good.
She really did right by us.
I don't wanna let her down.
She thinks I'm such
a good girl, but... I'm not.
I ran away instead of
telling her the truth.
[Rui] Do you regret it,
dropping out?
I don't know.
But that was
the decision I made.
Now I just have to find a way
to live with myself.
You're so beautiful, Kimi,
and so are you, Rui.
Your colors are gentle
and serene.
You see, I have a tendency
to see people as colors.
I try to keep it a secret so
people don't think I'm weird.
What does that mean exactly?
[Totsuko] Well, your color is
green, and Kimi's is blue.
I can see all
the beautiful colors
that each person embodies.
Or actually I feel them.
[Rui] That's amazing.
Look at us, we're like soulmates
sharing our secrets.
[soft instrumental music]
[all laughing]
[Totsuko]
You're a poet, Rui. [laughs]
Oh, almost forgot.
Let's check the weather.
[static buzzing]
Come on.
Tough to get a signal out here.
[static buzzing]
[radio announcer]
Only the classics.
[soft classical music]
[Totsuko gasps]
Is something wrong?
-It's "Giselle".
-[Rui] You know this song?
Yeah, I dream about it.
I took ballet when I was little.
There was a class
downstairs from us.
I wasn't very good at it,
though,
that's probably why I quit.
But I always wanted
to dance to this song.
Okay then, let's see it.
I think I can play some of this.
[soft classical music]
[soft theremin music]
[flame crackles]
[solemn theremin music]
[footsteps thud softly]
[solemn theremin music]
[laughs]
Something like that, anyway.
I told you I wasn't very good.
I never really learned that one.
I just remember watching it.
-[Rui] Like playing by ear?
-Yeah.
[hands clap softly]
[Kimi]
Hold on, I wanna try too.
[solemn instrumental music]
[flame crackling]
[flame snuffing]
[blanket rustling]
[Totsuko gasps]
[footsteps thudding]
[snow crunching]
[footsteps thudding]
Oh.
[Totsuko] Thank you
for your help yesterday.
[Sister Hiyoko]
Of course, how'd it go?
Training camp.
[Totsuko] Yeah, well,
I think I understand now.
Accept the things
I can't change.
And find the courage to
change the things
that I can.
Sorry for keeping secrets.
Sorry for worrying you.
I'm still gonna go to college.
I hid some things from you,
I'm so sorry.
But I really love music.
I made some new friends.
And we started a band.
[footsteps tapping]
And we're going to perform.
I can't tell you
how much fun it is.
Would you like to come watch?
Please come see us play.
[footsteps tapping]
[solemn piano music]
BAND NAME: WHITE CAT HALL BAND
[birds chirping]
[students chattering]
VALENTINE'S FESHere, take one of these.
[laughs] Take a picture.
[quirky music]
-Behold!
-[Rui] Hey look.
I set up a new account
for the band.
-What do you think?
-[Totsuko] Wow, that's cool.
White Cat Hall.
So, can I put our song up there?
Huh?
You wanna put it on
the internet, our music?
Well, yeah, of course I do.
I want people to hear
what we've made.
Wow, that's amazing.
Right, Kimi?
Huh, what's wrong?
-Am I doing the right thing?
-Huh?
I mean, I dropped out of school.
Is it right for me to be
performing at this festival?
What in the world
are you talking about?
You're already here and
you got all dressed up.
Yeah, and it's not like I was
-ever a student here.
-Now.
[students]
Welcome back, Kimi!
We missed you.
How's it going?
Whoa, you're outfit's so cool.
Sorry I left without
saying anything.
And for, you know, well,
coming back to perform today.
[students giggling]
We're just happy to
see you again.
[Sister Hiyoko] It's time.
Band members, please
make your way to the stage.
Sister Hiyoko,
let me introduce Rui Kagehira.
Nice to meet you,
and thank you for having us.
Oh, please,
thank you for coming.
I've been looking
forward to this.
Miss Higurashi let me hear
one of your songs already.
The one called "Written Apology:
the Good, the Beautiful,
and the Truthful."
I was particularly fond
of that guitar riff.
That muted strumming,
it truly resonated with me.
-But in the best possible--
-Sister, you know
so much about music.
[student] Excuse me, we're ready
for sound check now!
-[Rui] Coming.
-[Sister Hiyoko] Actually...
Yes?
The truth is,
when I was about your age,
I was in a rock band too.
We called it "God Almighty"
of all things.
[somber music]
[bell tolling]
If I could erase the past...
Sister, what about accepting
the things we cannot change?
[students chattering]
Coming up next, we have
a musical performance.
Please enjoy White Cat Hall!
[students applauding sparsely]
Hey, Totsuko,
what color are you?
Actually, I don't know.
That's okay.
[bell buzzing]
[Totsuko] Here we go.
[curtains humming]
[students chattering]
[lively electric guitar music]
Day after day
Time, it passes always
Go find your path now
Like the sunrise, your day
The stars up high,
up towards the sky
Sparkles above
a world of love
Together now in unity,
God Almighty
[lively electric guitar music]
There with a chained door
With the former boundaries
Shout it out from
in your heart
of screaming
Just say the words
and now it's true
I love you
[lively electric guitar music]
-Who's that boy?
-Yeah, what?
Is that Kimi?
Any idea who the other two are?
I recognize her.
She's always sitting
by herself in the chapel.
-Hmm.
-Hmm.
[students chattering]
Totsuko!
[somber keyboard music]
I'll let the light
Ignite the spark
So someone's dream
Can glow
Chase the love you seek
Let the light go
Wish inside I can
Blossom and bloom
[somber instrumental music]
The flames, they dance
And bid adieu
Softly fade
From view
Listen and you'll hear
the whispers
Secrets of the rising tides
Patience as you
stand in stillness
To hear the love song
just for you
Can you hear it now
Walk towards it somehow
The sounds of waves
reach out
Follow my voice
[button clicks]
[somber instrumental music]
[audience applauding]
[students chattering]
[lively synth music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
[lively electronic music]
I wanted to know you
the minute I saw you
It hit me like lightning,
like lightning, Amen
I know that the colors
will deepen inside you
You wanted to hide
but I went out to find you
In the sky above me,
I want to see you glow, yeah
Shining right above me,
I want to see you glow
In the sky above me,
I want to see you glow, yeah
Shining, shining,
shining, shining
I wanna see, I wanna see,
I wanna see you glow
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laughs like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand and hand
and now in this world, Amen
[lively electronic music]
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laugh like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand in hand
and now in this world, Amen
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
Laughs like at dinner,
I have this, Amen
Sun, Moon, Jupiter,
and Saturn, Amen
It's you and me hand in hand
and now in this world, Amen
[lively electronic music]

[Rui] Great,

Yep, let's do it.
Ready?
[both] One, two.

I wanted to know you
from the minute I saw you
It hit me like lightning,
like lightning, Amen
I know there are colors
you're keeping inside you
You wanted to hide,
but I went out to find you
In the sky above me,
I wanna see you glow, yeah
Shining right above me,
I wanna see you glow
In the sky above me,
I wanna see you glow, yeah
Shining, shining,
shining, shining
Wanna see you, wanna see you,
wanna see you glow
Mars, Earth, Mercury,
and Venus, Amen
