The Devil Is Busy (2024) Movie Script

(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
(CRICKETS CHIRPING)
TRACII WESLEY: Okay. (SIGHS)
(PENSIVE MUSIC CONTINUES)
(SIGHS)
(DOOR LOCK CLICKS)
(CAR BEEPS)
(CARD READER BEEPS)
(PENSIVE MUSIC CONTINUES)
(CARD READER BEEPS)
(CARD READER ALARM BEEPING)
(CARD READER BEEPS)
TRACII: Typically,
I am the first one
in the building every morning.
Between 5:30 and six o'clock,
I'll make sure that all
the systems are working,
everything is a go,
and prepare the building
to start to receive the guests.
Try to put out some snacks
and some water.
It's not a whole lot,
but because the guests come
from out of state,
driving all night long,
six, eight, ten hours
to come here,
they're not sitting here
without anything
to eat all day long.
I walk through the building
just to make sure
everything is clear
because it would be
easy for someone to hide
and wait to ambush someone
if they really,
really wanted to.
- (TRACII CLEARS THROAT)
- (RINGTONE PLAYING)
TRACII: Hello, good morning.
Uh, I'm at work already.
(MUSIC FADES)
Yeah, you know how it is.
You got to hit
the ground running. Mm-hmm.
So, we'll do prayer
this morning.
I'm moving around,
but I'd like to get it in
'cause we got a busy day.
SEAN CASTELOW: (OVER PHONE)
Yeah, okay. And we pray as well.
SEAN:
- TRACII: Yes, God.
- SEAN:
- TRACII: Yes, God.
- SEAN:
TRACII: Yes.
SEAN:
(TRACII SIGHS)
SEAN:
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
TRACII: Amen.
I appreciate it,
because it's going to be
a long day.
- Mm-hmm. All right.
- (SEAN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
TRACII: Let me get
my day started. All right.
(PENSIVE MUSIC CONTINUES)
TRACII: I'll see what time
the first client
is supposed to be on site.
Normally the guards
have to be in place
so that if people
do arrive early,
they go ahead and brief them
before the protesters
have a chance to start yelling
that vile stuff
at them early in the morning.
They got enough to deal with.
DOUG: (OVER MEGAPHONE) You see,
Jesus Christ came to save you from Hell.
This is a place
that serves the Devil
from the power of darkness.
Turn away from your sins.
(MEGAPHONE SCREECHES)
(MUSIC FADES)
DOUG: You know
in your heart of hearts,
'cause you have a conscience
that God has put in you.
The law of God is written
on all men's hearts.
And one of those
is thou shall not murder.
Murder is on your heart
and you know that it's wrong.
- That sounds like Doug.
- (DOUG SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
TRACII: Jason is also here.
That's one
of our resident protesters.
DOUG: There's no excuse
before The Holy God,
when you stand
on the day of judgment
because you have not trusted
in the one who came
to die for you.
And you have not believed
in Jesus Christ
and repented of your sins.
You are one breath away
from the grave...
TRACII: You know,
first thing in the morning,
I'm looking for where
could someone be
hiding in the woods?
Could someone be
hiding in a dumpster?
There's a car up top
that's not supposed to be there.
It's not staff, so who are they?
Do you have an appointment?
Excuse me.
- (RINGTONE PLAYING)
- Okay, I work here.
That's why I'm trying to find
out why you're in the parking lot.
Do you have an appointment?
(RINGTONE CONTINUES PLAYING)
- Good morning. Yeah.
- (RINGTONE STOPS)
I was trying to find out
if you had an appointment.
- Okay.
- (PATIENT SPEAKING SPANISH)
TRACII: Okay. So the
clinic opens at seven o'clock.
Okay. You're welcome to wait
in your vehicle
until security arrives.
(AUTOMATED VOICE
TRANSLATING INTO SPANISH)
Okay? Okay.
So you're good, though?
Okay. I'll be back
to check on you.
Okay. Gracias.
(DOUG SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY
IN DISTANCE)
TRACII: Good morning.
All right, that's
gonna be number one.
Come on. You doing
all right this morning?
(SIGHS)
We got a busy schedule today.
Go ahead and get your vest
and get the signs,
and I'll get the numbers set up.
PROTESTOR:
...is giving you time to repent.
Giving you time to get right
with Him. Jesus Christ...
TRACII: When the guest
checks in, you get a number.
PROTESTOR: ...King David,
who was a sinner...
TRACII: That number follows
you through from the check-in time
until the time
you're discharged.
And that's all I need
to know about you.
You have an appointment,
you're patient number six.
I don't know what
you haven't done.
Um...
We got 46 on the schedule today.
GUARD: Mm-hmm.
So as soon as Rakim gets here,
um, either you can put him
on the list
and you vet the cars,
or y'all can work
that out amongst yourself.
I think it makes
the guests feel at ease
because nobody's hearing
anybody's name
or anybody's
personal information.
CB-1, CB-2, radio check.
'Kay.
Ten-four, loud and clear.
All right.
There's your first ten.
All righty.
I'll see you in a minute.
GUARD: All right.
(CARD READER BEEPS)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER TV)
Ten-four, go ahead
and get the guests up
and in the community room,
please.
This is a very stressful,
high-stress situation.
(SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING)
TRACII: Any day,
you're not subject
to go home from here
because you never know
once people get in the building
what they may do.
PROTESTER: (OVER MEGAPHONE)
...at the moment of conception,
the child has its own DNA.
(MUSIC FADES)
Repent, man, repent.
TRACII: I have
outside contract security.
(GUARD SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
TRACII: It has been consistently
inconsistent at best,
but they know my expectations.
GUARD: Good morning.
You good, baby?
TRACII: I always want them
to focus on the what-ifs.
GUARD 1: How you doing?
You have an appointment?
- PATIENT: Yeah.
- Okay.
I'm gonna have you park
beside that maroon car.
- Just back in. See that maroo--
- PATIENT: Back in?
Mm-hmm. Okay, just park then.
I'll just...
- PATIENT: I'll try.
- No, that's fine.
Don't do it. Just pull in.
You're good.
GUARD 2:
Just pull in if you want.
We just don't want him to read
your license plate.
Yeah, read your license plate.
TRACII: They have a list,
just in case they forget.
No bags, no purses, no food
or drink for the guests.
"Oh, but Miss Tracii, it's just
her computer bag."
Did you check it?
Is there a gun in her bag?
Is there a knife in her bag?
JASON: (OVER MEGAPHONE)
Slavery used to be a right.
Slavery used to be
a choice here in America,
and just like abortion.
It's a wicked choice.
- We know it's murder.
- TRACII: Copy.
JASON: The premeditated
murder of a preborn child.
TRACII: We tell the guests
there are going to be protesters
at the bottom of the hill.
Don't stop. Drive past them.
Once they get on site,
the intensity,
it kind of startles people.
JASON: ...baby is not a mistake.
Jesus said,
"Why do you call me Lord
and not do the things I say?"
Sir, Jesus said,
"Go and sin no more."
Go and sin no more.
He didn't say you could use
God's grace
as a license to sin. He said...
TRACII: When you speak
to the guests,
it's a very upsetting experience
for a lot of them.
JASON: Please, ma'am.
Please, let's trust God today.
TRACII: Especially when the
women are walking up to the clinic
and he'll say something.
"God told me to tell you
you're a murderer
and you're going to hell."
And I see how it pierces them
in their spirit.
They'll get right here
and I'll see the tears.
And I say to them,
"Baby, don't let
the Devil get in your spirit.
He's a man.
He's human, just like you are."
And at the end of the day,
God gets the final say.
I'm not here to judge anybody.
This is healthcare, period.
JASON: If you're pregnant,
you're already a mother,
and God put that baby there.
God's knitting
that child together
in your womb right now.
God has a purpose and a plan
for that child.
TRACII: All right, so you have
an appointment?
All right, can I see your ID,
please?
You're super early,
you got a long day ahead of you.
You drove from Tennessee.
Okay, yeah. (LAUGHS)
- PATIENT: She said come early. She said
come the night before. - TRACII: Yeah.
PATIENT: And I'm like,
"I can't do that."
TRACII: When I'm up at the top
of the hill, you know,
before I send them
in to check in at the desk,
I say to them, "You're safe."
(SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)
"You're here
and that's half the battle."
"Don't worry about anything.
You're in good hands now."
JASON: Jesus said,
"Why do you call me Lord
and not do the things I say?"
OPERATOR:
Hi, how can I help you?
Yes, we do. Mm-hmm.
In the call center,
we are the first place
that the clients talk to.
All righty, we would make
an appointment
and you would need to come
into the center for care.
Do you know the first day
of your last normal period?
Okay...
And then to be the person
that has to tell them that no,
they can't be seen in Georgia
is really hard.
So, if you have cardiac activity
on an ultrasound,
we're not going
to be able to see you.
And that generally happens
around six weeks.
And you are six weeks today.
Where do you currently live?
It's extremely heartbreaking
to have to tell them no.
And they're scared.
Your best bet might be Florida.
Um, there's a clinic
in Jacksonville, Florida
and in Tallahassee, Florida.
I have their telephone number
if you'd like it.
Sure.
There's funding to help
with the cost of the procedure
and with your travel.
So be sure and ask them
about that, okay?
When you call the clinics.
You're welcome. Take care.
Bye-bye.
(TELEPHONE CLANKS)
And there's my day. (SIGHS)
(SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING)
(TELEPHONE RINGING)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
JENNIFER: Patient number 18.
- TECHNICIAN: How are you? Come on this way.
- PATIENT: Good, how are you?
TECHNICIAN: I'm gonna be doing
a quick ultrasound for ya.
All right, I'm just gonna
tuck this in.
- Really, it's more for you. That jelly gets
messy. (LAUGHS) - PATIENT: Yeah? (LAUGHS)
TECHNICIAN: I'm gonna put
some cold stuff on your belly.
So, your last menstrual period
was about five weeks ago.
PATIENT: Yeah. Yes. (CHUCKLES)
TECHNICIAN: All right.
So there's a tiny,
tiny little sac here.
And it looks like
it's about a five week sac.
I don't see anything
inside of the sac.
So there's no cardiac activity.
PATIENT: (SIGHS IN RELIEF)
-TECHNICIAN: No, that's
a very normal reaction. - PATIENT:
Phew! (CHUCKLES)
- TECHNICIAN: Relief.
Yes. (CHUCKLES) - PATIENT:
(PATIENT SIGHS IN RELIEF)
TECHNICIAN:
From an ultrasound standpoint,
if you're doing
a prenatal study,
you know, you're looking at
the four chambers of the heart
in order for a properly
functioning heart.
And you're not seeing
that at six weeks.
It's not even developed
at six weeks.
You wouldn't even start looking
until halfway
through the pregnancy
for normal heart anatomy.
So you are good.
PATIENT: Good.
TECHNICIAN: Yes.
Tears of relief.
PATIENT:
TECHNICIAN:
I know that that's the most
- anxiety-driven part.
- PATIENT:
TECHNICIAN: You're good.
Here you go. (CHUCKLES)
PATIENT: (LAUGHS)
TECHNICIAN: You're all set.
Are we going to ever,
with women's health,
get past the A-word?
We're still at abortion.
There's so many other needs
that need to be prioritized
in women's health care.
But society and politics
are stuck on this one,
you know?
So, I never thought
that I would have more rights,
than my daughter does now.
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
TRACII: I try to tell the guests
that come with their partners
to set up kind of a signal.
I will tell the patients,
if everything is fine,
send them a thumbs up.
I say, "Worst case scenario,
you'll text them and say,
'Hey, go get the car.'"
And so this morning,
we have our first no-go.
It's always emotional
for them coming out.
They might be six weeks
and a day,
but it's nothing we can do.
- DOCTOR: Hi, good morning.
- COLLEAGUE: Good morning.
- (DOCTOR CHUCKLES SOFTLY)
- (MUSIC FADES)
- DOCTOR: Hello, hello.
- JANICE MONTON: Hey, Dr. Hailstorks.
- DOCTOR: How's it going?
- JANICE: Good. How are you doing?
DOCTOR: Good.
How was your weekend?
I still remember, like,
my first couple of weeks here.
I was just so amazed
by the work that they do here.
How's it going?
Being able to take care
of patients
from all over the US.
Okay. All right. I'm going
to go say hi to everyone,
and then I'll be back
and we can discuss it.
- How's it going?
- YENENESH BEKELE: Busy today.
DOCTOR: Today?
As busy as last week?
YENENESH: Not as...
DOCTOR: You know, I've worked
my whole life to be an OB-GYN,
and as much
as I want to provide care,
I have to, you know,
keep in mind my safety,
my livelihood,
all of those things.
And it's...
When it puts it into perspective
that you could, like,
go to jail,
it's just like, "What?"
That's just...
It's... It's hard.
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
DOCTOR:
Because having a six-week ban
can essentially ban abortion.
A lot of women
don't even realize
that they're pregnant
that early.
So this patient
is scheduled for next week...
So, that one
we would do two-day...
- Friday, Saturday. Okay.
- Yeah. Mm-hmm.
(MUSIC FADES)
- And it's a fetal anomaly?
- Yes.
As OB-GYN providers,
we think about when legislation
impacts our ability
to provide care.
It may not be viable.
Do you feel okay,
or do you want stronger wording
from the specialist?
When we're thinking about areas
where we want to work
and where we want to live,
that definitely goes
into our decision-making.
So, I've had one
previous case with a patient
with holoprosencephaly
that was not as severe,
where, um, our committee
didn't let us do.
But this is much more severe,
and this documentation
says that she has
the most severe form.
Okay.
So I think
that this should be fine.
- I may just send a quick text...
- Okay. Yeah.
- ...but I think this should be fine.
- Please.
We have no problem with double,
triple, and quadruple checking.
DOCTOR: We may see
a shift in providers
not choosing to be
in certain parts of the country
because the laws
and the legal landscape
in that area
doesn't allow them the ability
to provide their full scope
of care.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
PROTESTOR: Jesus loves
The little children
All the children
Of the world
Whether yellow
Black or White
They are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the...
(CAR ENGINE RUMBLING)
PROTESTER:
Sir, what happened to you?
TRACII: CB-1, CB-2.
I know folks will ride
right past you,
but try to get the cars
to stop and slow down
so we don't have
to turn 'em around up here.
PROTESTOR: (OVER MEGAPHONE)
What happened to you?
(SIGHS)
PROTESTOR: Love that child.
Love and protect
that innocent baby.
Don't murder a child.
Ten-four.
PROTESTER: You don't have to.
You choose to.
Why do you choose to murder
an innocent child?
Hey, y'all should go talk
to that lazy guy
in that blue car
and ask him why he's allowing
his child to die.
Ask him why he's not standing up
for the life of his baby.
TRACII: When I look out,
I see pain, I see sadness.
I see hypocrisy, I see judgment,
because all of the protesters
have a history.
The same people
that come here and say,
"My body, my choice,
you can kill your baby,"
are the same people
who say Black Lives Matter.
What hypocrisy.
TRACII:
Jason has been to prison.
When he was 22,
he and three friends attempted
to burn down a Black church down
in Houston County in Perry,
Georgia, where he's from.
And one day I asked him, I said,
"How can you stand out here
and cast people
into a heaven or hell
that you don't have?"
He said, "Because I repented,"
Very self-righteous.
"I repented and God forgave me."
Then you feel like it's okay
for you to come out here
and stand and cast judgment
on people.
Because as you say, you repented
and God forgave you.
So, he can't forgive
nobody else?
So, it sickens me,
it saddens me,
but this is the world
we live in, unfortunately.
DOUG: (OVER MEGAPHONE)
God will not hear your prayers
because you have blood
dripping from your hands.
And those who have brought
someone here
will also have blood dripping
from your hands
as if you were the one
who drove a knife into...
TRACII: It's a lot, you know,
to come here
and to deal with the energy,
the negative energy,
from the protesters.
All right, number 21.
Because I know when I speak
to these women,
when I look in their eyes,
that's me.
- Did you drive or did you Uber?
- PATIENT: Uber.
TRACII: Okay. Come on and
have a seat for me right here, love.
When I was younger,
I had an abortion.
It was nothing
that I was proud of.
- What time was your appointment?
- PATIENT: 8:15.
TRACII: And I didn't feel
like I had anybody to go to,
anybody to talk to,
anybody to share that with.
Get anything you need out
of your purse,
and then I'm going to take it
and put it in the back.
I was ashamed.
(CARD BEEPS)
TRACII: Later in life,
when I got married,
and I was pregnant
with my twins,
I went into early labor
at six months,
and one was stillborn,
and one passed away
30 minutes later.
(DOOR OPENS)
TRACII: Come with me.
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
TRACII:
So, I always think about,
if that decision
to have an abortion...
was the reason why
I don't have children. (SNIFFS)
That kind of thing, so.
Okay. Thank you.
It's hard.
(PROTESTOR
SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY)
TRACII: I always ask God,
why did he curse me with this?
Because I think about my legacy.
I'm divorced
and I don't have children.
PROTESTOR: I'm trying
to point out the truth here
in God's word to warn you...
TRACII: But everybody deserves
to know that they matter.
Please don't murder
your child today, momma.
TRACII: And if we have
a conversation here
and I don't ever hear
from you again,
know that you matter to me.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
TRACII: I try to leave that
with every guest
because that's the way God
blesses me
so that I can bless
other people. (SNIFFLES)
Because everybody doesn't have
somebody to tell them,
"You matter and I love you."
(PENSIVE MUSIC CONTINUES)
(EKG BEEPING)
(INDISTINCT CHATTER, LAUGHTER)
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
NURSE: You getting sleepy?
DOCTOR: You say yes,
you're feeling sleepy?
- PATIENT: Mm-hmm.
- DOCTOR: Okay, perfect.
So, I'm going to start
with a vaginal exam, okay?
So, you may feel
my touch a little bit.
Lots of pressure.
You know, health care
shouldn't be based
on your zip code
or what state you live in
that you're not offered
a full scope of services.
I'm now cleaning your cervix
and vagina off, okay?
So lots of pressure.
Yeah.
(INDISTINCT CHATTER)
DOCTOR: I... (CHUCKLES)
I can't imagine myself really
doing anything else, but...
Take some deep breaths
in and out.
You're doing great.
It's just like we are moving
backwards, and so that...
Part of it is, like, terrifying,
like, how is it happening?
You're gonna hear
the machine turn on, okay?
(SUCTION MACHINE HISSING)
DOCTOR:
I think my biggest fear is,
what will they try
to attack next?
Like, is it contraception?
Uh... Is it, like, Plan B?
Like, what other things
are they now going to...
come after that
will further limit
our control over our own
reproductive autonomy?
You feeling okay?
(RUSTLING)
DOCTOR: There are moments when
you're just angry and upset,
and you sit and you put it
into perspective
and you think like,
"Okay, these are the people
that made it to me here,
but how many people did not?"
DOUG:
This is not a laughing matter.
One day you will stand
before Holy God,
give an account for this day,
saying, "Why didn't I listen
to these men out here?'
(SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING)
JASON: That's right,
mothers and fathers,
ladies and gentlemen.
The Scripture says, point blank,
"The Lord hates the hands
that shed innocent blood."
That's not our opinion.
We didn't write it.
It's the word of God,
Proverbs chapter six, verse 17.
Some of you guys, you come here,
you think God loves everyone.
You think, "No matter what I do,
God's gonna love me."
TRACII: Unfortunately,
God's word is interpreted
to meet whatever the need is
of the people
that are interpreting it.
(SNIFFLING)
You pick out the parts
that matter to you, right?
(LAUGHS)
And forget about the rest of it.
What are we looking like,
we got left? One, two?
(GUARD SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY)
TRACII: Okay, I'm going to go
in the back and double check.
And you should be done
by three o'clock.
The building
should be clear, okay?
All right, but I'll check back
with you as soon
as I walk through the building.
All right, thank you. Mm-hmm.
(CARD READER BEEPS)
JASON: See, Satan,
the Devil, comes to steal,
to kill, to destroy.
Satan, the Devil, not only wants
to murder these babies,
but he wants your soul
to spend eternity in Hell.
TRACII: I rely very heavily
on my faith while I'm here
because the Devil
is busy out there.
JASON:
...shedding innocent blood.
You use race, you use sex
as a weapon against women.
JASON: Guys, we come out
to share the truth with you.
TRACII: But there's
no accountability
for who you are
and what you do as a man,
that you want
to try to control someone.
Make it make sense.
You come here to support
Black genocide in America.
(PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING)
TRACII: God gives everybody
the power of choice.
We all have free will.
All right, did we get
any more numbers in here? Yep.
And whatever your belief is,
at the end of the day,
your last day here,
when you have to stand before
whomever you believe
your creator is...
He's not gonna look
at one situation,
one incident,
and judge the totality
of your life on it.
That's my personal belief.
Because the God I serve
is a forgiving God.
(CARD READER BEEPS)
(TRACII SIGHS HEAVILY)
Heavenly Father, Lord, I'd like to
come to you and say thank you, Lord.
Thank you for allowing us
to have another day, Lord God.
Lord, today was a busy day.
I thank you, Lord God,
for your covering, Father God,
for traveling mercies, Lord God,
that everyone made it
to their destination safely,
Lord God, that we were able to
get through and serve
all the patients, Lord God,
in the best way
that we could, Father God.
Father God, I ask for covering
from the crown of my head
to the soles
of my feet for myself,
Father God,
and all that we're here
at Feminist today, Lord God.
If your will be done,
Lord God, we will be back
at this appointed place
in the appointed time.
Hello, hello. We're clear.
I thank you, Lord,
for being a God that can do
exceeding and abundantly
above all
that I can ask
or imagine, Lord God. (SNIFFLES)
Thank you for blessing me,
Lord God,
even when I feel
like I'm not worthy. (SOBS)
Thank you, Lord God,
for keeping me
and protecting me.
Lord, I ask for covering
for my coworkers
as they go from this place,
Lord, and hopefully not
from your presence, Father God.
(SNIFFLES) It is in these things
I pray in your son Jesus's name.
Amen.
(SNIFFLES)
- (SIGHS)
- (MUSIC FADES)
All right.
(SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING)
- (DOOR CLOSES)
- (SOMBER MUSIC CONTINUES)
