The Reality Experiment (2026) Movie Script
1
[woman sobbing, panting]
[man] Listen, listen, listen!
[woman sobbing]
Oh my God, what have we done?
Look, I know this looks
really bad, but...
[suspenseful music]
You're really not helping.
Loo-- sorry... sorry.
We can fix this.
How?
Look, reality shifted,
that's all.
Things are a little different.
[woman sobbing]
We went too far, Paul.
You saw what was out there.
How the hell are we gonna fix
any of this?
Too many people have died.
We didn't write anything down.
I don't even know
what's real or what's--
what's even possible
in life now.
Look, we still have
three buzzes left,
that's something.
Three chances to make it better.
It's not enough.
Shifting realities...
time spasms...
...augmented pasts.
It's not rocket science.
You're jumping over,
like, ten things.
Look, all we have to do is
figure out one thing.
[music building]
What's that?
[Paul]
We just have to find out...
...who we are.
[deep rumble]
[music fades]
[man] Marcus Aurelius once said,
"Everything we see is
perspective, not the truth".
Any of you have
any idea what that means?
- Yes, Miles?
- [Miles] Um...
That what we see is our
understanding of what happened,
not necessarily
how it actually is?
[clicks tongue] Correct.
That phrase emphasises the fact
that our understanding
of reality
is shaped by our individual...
viewpoints and experiences,
rather than as a direct
reflection of objective truth.
For example, two people witness
a fight or an argument.
One person sees someone
attacking another person
for no reason,
whereas the other person knows
that just a moment earlier
that person
tried to steal
his or her wallet or purse.
One person sees it as
attacking an innocent,
the other person sees it as
defending their property.
What we believe,
what we've witnessed,
uh, our backgrounds
and our beliefs,
all factor in
to how we see...
...everything,
how we process what is...
true or real.
Perspective is everything.
Perspective is reality.
That's why I've brought you
all here today.
My name is Jeremy,
I study neuroscience here,
- and I'm trying to--
- How long is this, sorry?
'Cause I have somewhere
to be at eight.
[sighs] We'll be done by then.
Great.
I suspect a lot of you
aren't here for a lesson,
but rather for the $200
that was promised.
Yep.
All right, all right, all right.
I won't bore you
too much longer,
but the experiments
that you've all signed up for
over the next day or two,
are based in perspective
and reality.
How are the two linked?
I'll be running
a series of tests,
followed by a final test,
which might break the walls--
Sorry to interrupt, Jeremy,
but I--
[Jeremy] Yes, Miles.
[stammers] Haven't we all done
this before?
What do you mean?
I-- I don't know.
I-- I thought--
I mean, I'm having
serious dj vu of
being in a room like this
with someone like yourself.
[stuttering] I don't know.
Anyone else?
Sorry, I--
I must be confusing it
with another situation.
Yeah, maybe your
alcoholic's anonymous meeting.
[everyone snickering]
Yeah, that'd be it.
[all chuckle]
Well, anyway,
we'll start by getting you all
to do a number of
personality trait videos,
to get a more detailed profile
of you guys.
A profile of us?
Yeah, just to get
a sense of who you are,
your situation.
How you're different
from each other,
just to ensure
that the final experiment...
yields the best results.
Kathryn.
You are in a rush.
You go first.
Perfect. [scoffs]
[upbeat working music]
So, what is your most defining
personality trait?
Um...
I'm kind, I'm caring.
I like to cook.
I believe in maintaining
a healthy outlook.
Have a strong sense
of adventure.
[Jeremy] Paul, this--
this isn't a dating video.
I'm pretty shy...
I mean, I get so scared
a lot of the time.
Going out, public speaking,
all of that stuff.
However, I do love scary movies,
so, you know...
Make of that what you will.
[man] Uh, g'day.
I'm Nick, 27.
Um... solid seven out of ten.
[exhales] Once had a dog
lick my face
to get out of a relationship.
Uh, recently learned
how to menstruate.
I'm... a drinker.
I love a good pub call or
a sports bar with my mates
or occasionally a winery trip
every now and again.
[Jeremy] Dude,
those are all the same thing.
Um, are they, though?
[Jeremy]
Just say you're an alcoholic.
Uh...
Then I'm an alcoholic.
What should I say?
Just part of your personality
that's original to you, unique.
Something that makes you
different from the rest.
Like what?
[Nick] When was the last time
you had sex?
[sighs] Nick, get out of here.
[Nick laughs]
Sorry about that.
[Kathryn] That is so immature.
How many--
- [woman] Kathryn!
- What?
Guys, can you stop?
I'm not into partying,
celebrating,
any of that nonsense, uh...
I'm looking for new causes.
Innovation, which is why
I found this whole
experiment interesting.
I tend to think...
if I never kissed
Chris Noble in year 12,
my life would have turned out
completely differently.
I mean, what was I thinking?
I've got a rough side.
I'm cautious.
I think that's what it is, cautiousness.
Also, I hate bad hair
on anyone, but especially me.
It's probably
one of my greatest fears.
Next to death.
If I ever had kids,
I'll call them Rex,
Martin and Bobo.
Purely just to annoy my mother.
I've never really done anything
out of my comfort zone.
Wanna travel... Europe,
America, whatever, but...
...I keep on letting
things get in the way.
What the hell are these
questions for, Jeremy?
You'll find out.
Why does that scare me?
Can I, uh, tell a joke?
Fine, but I really
wanna hear from you--
What does a Polish man give his
wife on their wedding night
that's long and hard?
His last name.
[laughs]
My plan is to go corporate.
Partner, manager,
something high level
in the next five years.
I also work out, I go for runs.
I go to the gym too.
You don't go for runs.
No, I don't, sorry.
Don't worry,
this is all great stuff.
Really?
Yeah. Shows me you're a liar.
[music continues]
So, are we getting cash?
Or you-- you'll transfer?
Do you know how long it'll take?
I swear we've done this before.
You don't have to tell me
anything if you don't want to--
No, I'm-- I'm serious.
I feel like we've done
this all before.
- Have we?
- You know we haven't.
I'm a problem solver.
I like crosswords, puzzles.
But really, I'm someone who can
see how things can be improved.
I usually step up to
the leadership roles.
I don't know... sometimes...
I think I have an idea
of what kind of person I am.
And then other times I see
myself doing something
- completely different.
- [music turns reflective]
Shouldn't I know...
a little bit better
about myself at 25?
How is it I'm still...
...discovering all these things
after all this time?
I mean, I ask myself
the same questions.
Well... [sighs]
Good. [chuckles]
At least I'm not the only one.
I think it's everyone, Kelly.
I think that's...
all part of being alive.
Figuring out who you are.
[music fades]
Alright, thanks everyone.
Hope I didn't keep you too long.
Nope... one hour on the dot.
You all just earned
yourselves 100 bucks.
[everyone cheer]
[Jeremy] I'm gonna
compile these videos.
Man, some of you guys really
like to talk about yourselves.
- [Nick] He's talking
about you, Ruth.
- [Ruth] He's referring to you.
[Jeremy] Alright, final
experiment's on Thursday.
Don't be late.
It's gonna be very interesting
I'm super excited.
Can't wait to see you all there.
[upbeat, jazz music]
[woman] So what is it,
this final test?
It's like electric
shocks or something?
[Kelly] It did say that there
was going to be some kind of
small electric exposure.
Whatever.
Um... but the other day
we only talked about
our personalities.
About ourselves.
It's supposedly
to do something about
perspective or something.
I don't know, it all seemed
pretty pointless to me.
Main guy Jeremy seems alright.
[woman] Kelly,
you're already dating a guy.
- [Kelly] No!
- I did not mean it that way.
- [chuckles]
Okay?
No, he's just-- he's very smart,
and not too serious.
But...
[woman] What?
[Kelly] I don't know.
There was something
about him...
- that seems...
- Off?
[Kelly] Not off.
He just-- he thinks that
he's very smart.
The smartest guy in the room.
And we are his test subjects.
But you literally are,
aren't you?
[clicks tongue] Yeah.
I don't know, I guess
I'm just very nervous
about his final test
that he keeps on talking about.
It's 200 bucks.
For what? Two hours?
I'd get electrified for that.
[chuckles] Yeah.
You don't even wanna know...
what I would do for 200 bucks.
Hey no! I'm gonna stop you
right there.
[keyboard clacking]
[man] 200 bucks?
Yeah.
[man] Why didn't you
get us on that?
I asked. You would...
asked him or something,
I don't know.
What is it they do to you?
Butt stuff, is it?
Uh, no... butt stuff.
It's about... perspectives
or reality or something.
[clear throat] For 200 bucks?
They'll probably do,
like, some...
- blood samples
or something, you know?
- [man] Yeah.
[Paul] No, they didn't take
any blood samples.
It's an interesting experiment.
Quite a curious member
of the university.
Honestly.
I find his ideas...
quite interesting.
Really?
What, you're thinking grants?
Well, maybe.
Checking it out now.
They've already given him
a couple of grand
for this experiment, so...
Well, what's
the final test, then?
He mentioned something
about light shock therapy.
And the university
is allowing this?
[woman] It's probably that
hypnotism thing.
You said he was detailing
your personalities or something, right?
Yeah, he's making like
a profile we get to read.
What? Why would you
let him do that?
Now he can probably like...
guess your credit card pin or
your bank password
or something like that.
- Oh--
- It's probably a con.
Good, he can have
the few hundred dollars
I have in my bank account.
I literally could care less.
Seriously?
Identity theft?
Ever heard of it?
[Kathryn] Oh, come on.
Google knows more
about me than this guy.
Plus, I'm gonna take out
insurance on the bank.
And maybe I could say
I had more.
Oh my God!
[both laughing]
[man clears throat] So what is
this experiment anyway?
Definitely butt stuff.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
The head guy, Jeremy...
[scoffs] ...he's got a butt
fetish written all over him.
[deep breath]
So you, um--
you still gonna do it?
Yeah.
Why not?
And...
[shouts indistinctly]
[woman chuckles] I don't think
it's gonna be anything creepy.
The main guy, Jeremy,
he seems alright.
But, I think he thinks
I'm an idiot.
[woman 2 over phone]
Ugh! come on, blow it off!
I'm dying to go to Domo's.
Chelsea said it's awesome
and you're
the only other person
I know that hasn't gone.
No, I have to go now.
I wanna see what
it says in our profiles.
[scoffs] I bet he hates me.
[music continues]
[keyboard clacking]
[music softens]
[music fades]
I knew it was butt stuff.
It's not... butt stuff.
Calm down, everyone, just, uh...
please, take a seat.
Wherever you want.
Are those chairs... electrified?
[Jeremy] No, not now.
Uh, but nothing to worry about.
It's just the metal tops
on the rubber balls
that will give you...
a little buzz.
But nothing too horrible.
The charge is coming out of
these AA batteries here.
Not even enough to boil an egg.
So it's--
please, it's quite safe.
That looks like the cheapest
thing I've ever seen.
Is that sticky tape you used to
stick those batteries together?
Looks like it was
made by a child.
It's a prototype device.
Look, like I said, it may not
look it, but it is... safe.
So... please, I've tested it.
Take a seat.
[suspenseful music]
[man] Really?
[clears throat]
I suppose you've all
probably been wondering
what it is I've been cooking up
for the final part of this test.
Have any of you ever heard
the theory of
panpsychism or biocentrism?
Nick?
No, I haven't heard of that,
Jeremy.
What is it?
Helpful as always, Nick.
What about our profiles?
Can we read them?
I have them, they're...
...in that protective case
over there.
[man] Protective?
Protective from... what?
From whatever happens tonight.
Look, there's nothing to worry
about now.
Now, please, no more
interruptions.
Panpsychism is what we will be
testing tonight.
It proposes that...
consciousness is a fundamental
aspect of reality.
In other words, what if we were
all connected?
What if that dictated how we
see, hear, feel, everything?
What if none of that...
even exists?
Now, for one, it's a theory that
is almost impossible
to disprove,
because, I can pick up
an apple, eat it, digest it.
I can affect things,
and you can see it.
The laws of physics and
mathematics still exist,
but these could all still be
under the guise of a universal
consciousness that...
we accept...
purely because...
we don't know it's there.
Uh... a question.
So, I don't understand a w--
word of what you just said.
Dean is confused.
It's hurt itself in the
confusion.
Also, Jeremy, I, uh--
I don't know what
the hell you just said.
What if we are all connected?
Mentally sharing an
invisible signal like...
a big human internet.
And the way we see and
hear everything,
that all that information
is determined by
- that big... human internet.
- Wait, wait, wait...
what evidence do you have that
this is something, like,
this is even possible?
Or is it simply theoretical?
Yeah, surely we'll
be able to detect
some kind of shared
mental signal.
If we can detect
radio waves, surely.
Have you ever heard of the
Mandela effect, Paul?
Have you ever seen something...
a color different from what
your friend saw, Kelly?
The gold-white dress,
or the blue-black dress,
Laurel or Yanny?
There are things in this world
that don't always add up.
Inconsistencies.
These are just a few
recent examples.
Hell, even the other night,
Miles here...
thought we'd already
done the experiment.
Well, that was just dj vu.
Maybe.
Or maybe, the mind
doesn't have a way
of dealing with all this
information that it's sharing,
this... lie that it's
cultivating
all so that we can
process the world to
produce clear, rational thought.
Oh, this is hurting my head now.
[sniffs]
Kathryn...
...what is the universe made of?
Space? Earth?
Air? Trees?
Smaller than that.
What are all those things
made of?
I mean, like, carbon and...
hydrogen and stuff?
Smaller.
[dreamy music]
Particles?
Exactly.
This room isn't a solid object.
It's all particles,
quarks and leptons,
bouncing around off each other.
The mind can't simply show us
trillions of particles, all
those elements, electrons,
neurons bouncing around...
so instead it chooses
to show us...
- [soft thud]
- ...a chair
or a watch or a door...
or a whole other figure
with fingers and a heart and
a brain capable of thoughts,
memories, dreams...
all so that we can make sense
of this life.
That is the power of our
conscious minds.
So... why do we see things
th-- the way we do?
Like, why do I have...
...five fingers and not...
...three or... six?
I don't know.
Maybe it's a balance.
You know, why are we not
big dinosaur creatures?
Or why is that table
not a floating bubble?
Why is a duck not a cow?
Maybe it's evolution.
Who knows? Maybe it's
the best-case scenario
or whatever makes
the most sense.
Whatever it is, it is what
we know as... reality.
Alright, so... if there's this
whole realm of human
consciousness
that we're all living in...
that dictates reality,
then what is
your experiment about?
Easy.
I want to detach from it.
You see I've... discovered a way
to temporarily separate
our minds
from the giant collective
consciousness.
On your chairs, on the armrests,
you'll see a rubber ball
with a bit of metal on top.
That is connected directly to an
electrical signal
which will send a small shock
to a very particular part
of your brain,
I believe, is responsible for
keeping us connected to the, uh,
well... I've been calling it
"The Shroud."
It's like switching a modem on
and off for the internet.
Is this like Scrotum's cat
or something?
[chuckles] Yeah, yeah,
it's definitely like
Scrotum's cat. Mm-hmm.
Wait, so you want us to
volunteer
to electrocute our brains...
to completely disconnect
from what we know as reality?
Theoretically, it will only be
a very brief
disconnection from The Shroud,
only for a moment,
and then we'll be reconnected.
I want to see what happens...
in that moment.
I've made sure that we're
far enough away
from all other minds
so that it should only affect us
based on previous tests.
You've already done this?
A couple of times.
It's very safe, painless.
You should only feel
a small jolt.
What happened?
Something very interesting.
But also...
the results were limited.
Not enough to give me any proof,
but...
I have a feeling that with...
more minds
disconnected at the same time,
we should yield
very different results.
Wait...
...are we sure we wanna do this?
Kelly?
You're saying you want us
to play around with the...
fabric of reality, essentially.
I'm not sure if a group of
people with
just a standard electric switch
should be doing this.
[chuckles]
[Nick] Calm down, Kelly.
It's not that dangerous.
It's just a couple of
AA batteries.
I-- I'm sorry if I scared you,
Kelly.
But, I really doubt that we'll
experience anything like...
[sighs] I'm not gonna turn you
into a turtle or something.
It's only a very small test.
Then why you made us do all that
personality testing?
Are you afraid you might
change us or something?
[sighs] Well, yes,
but... nothing major.
Only... maybe hair color
will change,
the way you pronounce
certain words.
Uh, maybe your clothes
will change.
That's all that will happen
if anything happens at all.
Look, I don't wanna scare
any of you.
So... if anyone's feeling unsure
about this,
you don't have to go
through with the test.
I'm not gonna force you
to do anything.
This is all voluntary.
The door is right there.
[Kelly] Sorry guys.
[Jeremy] Before you go...
let me ask you this.
What if you had the power to
create or change
anything in your life?
To bend your own reality
to your will?
To change a simple rock...
into a thing of beauty?
[suspenseful music]
Holy crap, is that gold?
Did you make gold?
Like I said,
my results are limited,
but I believe with more minds
we could change more than, uh...
just a rock.
Holy crap.
You could have bought
that online or found it
on a goldmine or something.
That's not proof of anything.
You're right, I could have,
but I didn't.
And the only way
you'll know for sure
is if you join me
in this experiment.
Kelly?
Think about it, Kelly.
Isn't there anything
in your life that you would...
want to change,
that you would improve?
If there is, this could be
your best chance.
Oh, come on, Kelly,
let's do this.
Ha! I'm gonna bring
a Ferrari into the room.
Don't pressure her,
she's obviously feeling
a bit overwhelmed.
Come on, Kelly, it'll be fun.
Yeah, come get
electrocuted with us.
[scoffs]
Kelly, you don't
have to do this.
[music continues]
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
[everyone]
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Okay, okay.
- [everyone whoops]
- [Nick] Yeah!
- Woo! Yeah!
- [Kathryn] Yes!
[indistinct cheering
and whooping]
All right, all right.
Settle down.
Hands off the ball.
Hey, I didn't get to look
at the... gold.
Like I said,
it's... very slow voltage,
but it's still enough to give
you a nasty little buzz.
Everybody all good?
Remember, you can tap out
at any time, no shame.
Just flick the switch already, pussy.
Nick! You can't say that.
[chuckles]
Okay, now to make sure
this works the same
for everybody,
I'm gonna need you to place
your thumb over--
over the joystick there.
Place it firmly.
The jolt needs to hit you
there and then
travel up your arm to your neck.
It needs to hit a
very specific nerve
to hit the part of the brain
that I want, okay?
[sighs] The more you talk about
frying our brains,
the less I wanna do this.
Yeah, quit talking us out of it.
All right, get ready.
[dial clicks]
[soft buzzing]
It's live.
[sighs]
Now, when I count down
from five,
I want you all to push down
on the metal prong.
After I get to one, got it?
- Got it.
- Yeah, got it, after one.
- Yeah.
- [Nick] Got it.
- Got it.
- [Kathryn] Yeah.
[Dean] Got it.
Okay... five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one...
- ...go!
- [buttons clicking]
- [deep rumble]
- [high-pitched buzzing]
[soft groans]
[buzzing intensifies]
[groaning]
[buzzing fades]
Did anything happen?
I don't know... did it?
That button worked,
that buzz friggin' hurt.
Uh-- I saw a white flash.
Same.
I-- I don't think it worked.
[chuckles]
[tense music]
Holy crap.
Yeah... we switched seats
somehow.
Oh God, you're right.
Kathryn, you were sitting
right next to me
just a second ago.
[exhales] Oh my God.
Shit, am-- am I all right? A--
Are you all right?
Yeah, I'm fine.
[chuckles]
I'm fine.
It's okay, everyone, this is
exactly what I thought
was gonna happen.
Now, everyone,
stand up we're gonna...
walk around a bit,
check your phone,
wallet, keys, clothes,
look for any... changes.
Subtle as they might be,
they could all be evidence
that The Shroud exists.
[music builds]
[Kelly] Oh my God!
My phone's different.
Different how?
I mean, the apps and contacts
are all the same, but
the phone...
this is the latest model.
I bought my phone
three years ago.
You're kidding.
Oh my God, this is the 17.
I was gonna get
one of these myself.
Holy crap, Kelly wished herself
a new phone?
Amazing. See, the brain...
...it documents so many things,
but there are
some things which...
it categorizes as unimportant,
who you're sitting next to,
what kind of phone you have.
I wouldn't be surprised if there
are more things here.
Miles, your hair is different.
And Nick, you were wearing a
black top before,
and now it's blue.
Was I?
Was he?
You don't remember that?
I remember a black top.
Vaguely, but I'm-- I'm pretty
sure I put on a blue shirt.
I thought it was a white shirt.
Three different colors.
Well, there's no way
we're gonna know
what color it was originally.
You see, I've always wondered
if the brain had a way to...
recreate memories to help it
explain these lapses.
Like when something
unpredictable happens.
It... creates this scenario in
which it protects itself.
Uh, or maybe it's the collective
consciousness that does.
It's-- it's almost like a
living, breathing entity.
What, The Shroud?
Yes.
Do you realize what this means?
It means that our
consciousness...
is the real reality of our
world, not the physical.
The physical is a lie.
Electrical bursts into
nerve endings
that were never even there.
Dude, you're making
my head hurt again.
I'm saying that we can literally
manifest our lives,
our entire world.
But... I didn't want
a new phone.
I did.
Wait, not even subconsciously?
[Miles] Wait, Jeremy, uh...
If you're saying The Shroud,
the human internet or
whatever, is living...
...then wouldn't it try
to protect itself?
I-- if it created this reality
to help us...
...then what if we start
destroying it
like we've been doing here? I--
Wouldn't it fight back?
[Paul] Oh my God.
What have you done?
What's happened? What's changed?
Well, I was... looking for
changes, you know.
I looked in my wallet
for the photo of my family.
It's not there.
So I thought maybe
I just dropped it.
And then I checked my address
on my license and...
...it's not my address.
I live at 3 Boulevard Crescent.
This says 270-5 Eaton Avenue,
a freaking apartment.
What are you saying?
You lost your house?
How is that possible?
[Paul] No, it's just...
I tried calling my wife.
There was no answer and...
...the phone number
doesn't exist.
So I... looked her up
on Facebook.
She's married to someone else.
What have you done?
[Kelly] But...
I thought you said that
it would only affect us.
Jeremy?
Wait, wait, come on now,
all this could just be a prank
or you've looked up
the wrong name.
I know my wife's face, okay?
Problem is...
I can't remember my children's.
How can you forget
your kids' faces?
Because they never existed.
Look, we're jumping to
extremes here.
It doesn't affect anyone.
Jeremy... [stammers]
we're all connected.
No matter how far or how
isolated, we're all connected.
[stammers] Your whole theory
is based on this.
But my previous test didn't have
any results like these.
Are you kidding?
How could you not prepare for
something like this?
I did. Uh-- I made sure
we could get us
back to how everything was.
Don't worry, Paul.
If this has actually happened,
I can get us back.
How?
Those profiles in that case over
there, they're protected.
We just need to read them...
and remember who we are
to get us back.
Are you serious?
That's why I made us do them.
Those profiles detail everything
about us, who we are,
what we do,
all of our information.
They are the fail-safe
in case anything like this...
happens.
Don't worry, Paul.
I can get it back.
It's gonna be all right.
But how does that help us?
You're saying we just...
remember our lives,
buzz and it all will return?
Yeah.
Of course.
We just need to reset it,
that's it.
Wait, you mean do it again?
Won't that risk it
for all of us?
[Paul] Kathryn...
...this is my family.
It's my life.
I know, but can't you
just do it, Paul?
Why do all of us have to?
It will only work if we
all do it at the same time,
like before, Kathryn.
Uh, that's the only reason
any of this has happened,
because of the size
of the disconnect.
Wait... I'm with Kathryn.
Aren't we now risking having
all our lives messed up
just for one person?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, surely
there is another way.
Trust me.
If we read through the profiles
and remember our lives,
we can get back to how
everything was.
What we can't do, though,
is what we're doing now
and panic.
No, no, no. No.
I'm not up for this.
[Paul] Please.
This is my family.
It's my life.
I've been married 15 years.
My daughters--
My daughters are
11 and 13 years old.
Now they're gone.
Sophie...
It's my oldest. I can--
I can barely see her.
My youngest.
They're my everything.
Can't you understand that?
Fifteen years, everything that
I've shared and built...
It's gone.
Oh my God.
We can't let his family
disappear, can we?
All right, e-- everyone
just calm down.
Paul, you don't know
anything yet.
A-- a phone call, a missing
photo, a Facebook status?
[dry laugh] Jesus, man,
you think it's all gone because
his-- someone's shirt changed
and-- and she has a new phone.
But, this could all just be
some magic trick
by Jeremy the Wonderful
or something.
Jeremy the Wonderful?
And the Facebook changes,
the missing phone numbers?
Who knows?
[stammers]
Go to your house, Paul.
Find out more information.
You-- You're really all
jumping to conclusions here.
Yeah.
Yeah, sure, y-- you're right.
I'll go with you, um...
Everyone else... stay here.
We won't be long.
Just to be sure.
We'll wait here.
[Kelly] This isn't happening.
[footsteps approaching]
What are you waiting for?
I'm sure everything... is fine.
E-- even if we have changed more
than we think we have...
...I can fix it.
Just... stay here.
We'll be back soon.
[door closes]
This is nuts, isn't it?
Kelly, did your phone
really change?
I don't care if
Paul's family's gone.
I'm not getting back
in that chair.
No, no, no, no, no.
[dry laugh] I'm not--
no, not happening, no.
[playful, intriguing music]
So, I want to thank you all
for this.
My family's everything to me.
I'm only doing this
because you said
Billy's Chicken Mart had
disappeared,
and I love Billy's chicken.
I could care less about you
and your five kids.
Two kids.
Whatever.
[Jeremy] Remember, everybody,
I want you to read
through your profiles,
keep it in your mind of...
who you are,
your family, your possessions,
anything and everything
about who you were.
And we want you to keep it in
your brain, otherwise...
I-- I think you gave me
Kathryn's by mistake.
Yeah, I got Miles.
[Dean] Ditto.
- Really?
- [Nick] Yeah.
I'm pretty sure
I'm not "46 years old
with the temptation
of being a furry."
- [paper rustles]
- Give me that.
Okay, sorry guys,
just swap them.
I'm still pretty nervous
about all of this.
[Kelly] It's all right, Jeremy.
Just get us back
to before, yeah?
Ruth, just saying, you watch way
too many horror films.
Some of those points are weird.
Okay, okay, forget about hers,
just focus on your own.
Read through your profiles,
and when you're done,
I'll collect them up
put them back
in the container...
[music continues]
[paper rustling]
- [paper rustling]
- [lock clicks]
Are you sure that case
is protected?
What if it all goes wrong again?
Trust me, the material
this case is made of
is specially designed to
keep what's in there safe.
I just wish I had enough to
cover this entire room,
but I don't.
If it goes wrong again, we just
do it again
until we get it right.
How long do those
batteries last?
What if we go to a reality
that doesn't use batteries?
Well, then we find
another power source.
Don't worry, there is
enough charge in these
for at least another...
six or seven buzzes, I think.
I'm gonna leave this on
this time.
Get ready.
Amelia, Sophie, Leanne,
my beautiful family.
University student,
second year in business,
dating Henry... I like my life?
I'm not an alcoholic, I'm not an
alcoholic, I'm not an alcoholic.
You're the shit, Nick,
always have been.
Big dick on campus.
Peanut, my cat.
Rony, my bestie.
Trevor...
No, actually, forget Trevor.
Trevor never existed.
Five seconds.
Everybody keep your thumbs
on the prongs.
On one this time.
Four... three... two... one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing intensifies]
[sighs]
- [bird calling]
- [groans]
[buzzing fades]
[groaning]
Everybody all good?
- Paul?
- Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
Oh God, I felt it that time.
Did it work?
Did we switch it back?
I-- I think so, I have
everything I had before.
Me too.
My phone's still new.
Really?
Paul?
[suspenseful music]
[sighs]
It worked.
My wife.
And my two sons.
- Yes.
- [everyone clapping]
Congrats, Paul.
Oh, damn! Glad to hear it.
[indistinct chattering]
Yes.
[indistinct chatter]
[woman] God, I freaked out
there for a second.
Me too, my mind was racing
about what would happen
if my arm or leg disappeared.
My whole life.
- Hm...
- [Miles] Hang on.
Who the fuck is that?
[music fades]
Who is...
Her.
That's Helen.
Helen?
Who's Helen?
Where is Dean?
Yeah, where is Dean?
Who's Dean?
What, wait.
Yes.
Mmm, I don't remember a Dean.
Well, I don't remember Helen.
What are you saying?
I'm saying, Helen...
I don't think you exist.
Well, that's stupid.
She's been here with us
the whole time.
I kind of remember both of them,
but how's that possible?
A-- and Paul, didn't you have
two daughters and not two sons?
I, uh... no, I, uh--
I had two sons, Robert and Liam.
No, uh...
their names were
Sophie and Leanne.
You were repeating them
just before.
[sighs] Oh, shit.
What do you mean I don't exist?
I've been with you
all this entire time,
this entire stupid game.
[Nick] Is Dean Helen?
Like-- like is he her or...
[stammers]
I mean, is-- is that Dean or is
that a completely new person?
Jeremy?
[chuckles] No, uh, no.
No, this can't have happened.
We-- we all read the profiles.
They were accurate.
Did we mess up?
Are you sure?
I'm sure.
I know she didn't exist.
And Paul, you might
have a family, but...
it's not the same family
that you had before.
Jeremy, we have to
do this again.
- Get the profiles.
- [stammers and sighs]
Calm down, Miles. I'm still
running this experiment.
Again?
What, and screw more stuff up?
Wasn't the whole point to bring
Paul's family back?
Yeah, we did that.
Huh? No more buzzing.
That's not his family.
And have you already
forgotten about Dean?
We have to get Dean back.
- Sorry, who's Dean?
- What does that--
Shut up, Helen, you don't exist.
- Okay, take it easy.
- [all scoff]
We don't know what you're
talking about.
Dean, uh, remember...
he loved to drink and
was dumb as nails.
- Scrotum's cat.
- Yes.
Come on, while he's still
fresh in our minds,
we can get him back.
Hang on, if we rush this again,
there's no telling
what changes will occur--
We still don't know all the
changes that have happened now.
You're right.
We could be floating out
in space
- or wandering around.
- Wait!
[music increases, then halts]
What?
We have to be careful.
Who knows what
our minds are capable
of subconsciously creating.
What do you mean?
I mean, it's...
theoretically possible
that we could mix our
dreams with our memories.
We don't know how altered
our reality can get.
Looks pretty normal to me.
Wait, what is that?
[suspenseful music]
Are they... people?
They don't look like people.
Oh my God,
they're coming towards us.
- Holy crap, what do we do?
- Close the door.
- [door closes]
- Just calm down, everyone.
They're just students
wandering around campus.
Just... let me think for a sec.
What did we do wrong?
[music fades]
[heavy footsteps]
[footsteps get louder]
[footsteps stops]
[pounding on door]
[man] Hello?
[inaudible]
Yeah?
[doors rattling and slamming]
[heavy footsteps]
[whimsical music]
What the fuck?
Hi?
Hi.
Can I have a hug?
A hug?
Yes, please.
This is a private
experiment of sorts.
No students allowed.
I'm not a student.
My name's Mr. Beaucroft.
[Jeremy] S-- sure.
Uh...
Look, we're really
busy here, so--
Anyone will do.
Just a quick hug.
Can I please have a hug?
- You need to--
- I'm not leaving 'til
someone hugs me.
Fine, I'll do it.
It's okay, it's just
a kid in a costume.
- It's fine.
- No, it's-- it's all right.
I'll--
Ill do it.
Just leave us alone,
Mr... Beaucroft.
I'm not leaving 'til
someone hugs me.
I'm-- it's all right.
I'm-- I'll do it.
[laughs nervously]
How about a handshake?
I'm not so much of a--
a hugger, Mr. Beaucroft.
Okay.
I'll shake your hand.
I just want you to come here.
[ominous music]
[music increases, then halts]
Here I am.
Come on.
[growling]
[ominous music]
[growls]
[wet chewing sounds]
[screaming]
[Nick] Chairs, chairs!
Come on in, Mr. Dibbling,
Mr. Cavendish.
- They're delicious.
- [Nick] Chairs!
- [Miles] Get out of
my chair, Helen.
- [Helen] Just sit down!
[indistinct yelling]
Come on, press it!
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing fades]
[groans]
Guys?
Hello?
Nick?
Guys?
Ruth?
- Somebody in there?
- [wet screeching]
[ominous music]
Hello?
[eerie sting]
[chair squeaks]
[eerie sting]
[creature growls]
Oh, fuck it.
[button clicks]
[music builds]
[button clicking]
Come on...
[button continues clicking]
[eerie rumble]
Come on...
Come on...
Come on...
Come on, come on...
Come on...
- [creature screeches]
- Come on...
- Come on...
- [soft beep]
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[groans]
[buzzing intensifies]
[buzzing fades]
- Oh my God.
- What the fuck?
I'm back.
Kelly?
[Kelly] Ruth.
Is-- is that Ruth?
[groans]
Oh, in here...
I need a second.
Tell me about it.
It's feeling all...
scrambled.
[tense music]
[music continues]
I was in a field or a
park of some sort.
I was alone...
and there was
something in the distance
charging at me.
It didn't say anything...
...but... it was coming for me.
So I pressed the buzzer.
The exact same thing
happened to me.
Well, I wasn't in a field.
I was in a house.
There was something like...
banging on the door
trying to come in.
And I panicked.
Of course I pressed it.
But didn't Jeremy say
that the only reason why
this has worked so far is
because there were
multiple people present
at the same time?
How could one person possibly
change all of this?
[Miles] Well, first of all,
Jeremy didn't know
as much as he thought.
He was a kid playing
with a rocket launcher.
I mean, he probably
didn't think he'd tap into
something like this.
After all, look
what happened to him.
[Nick] Yeah.
He got his head eaten
by a giant duck.
Y'all remember that?
Goddamn Mr. Beaucroft
eating people's heads.
Yeah, all right, we get it.
Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure you get it.
You probably thought him up.
What-- who? Mr. Beaucroft?
- Hmm.
- What are you even saying?
I'm saying that before
Jeremy left, he said
we had to be very careful
not to mix our dreams with
our memories in our thoughts.
Last time I checked,
you're the only one here
obsessed with horror films.
Wha-- No--
- No-- I didn't mean to.
- [Miles] Look,
- it's not your fault, Ruth.
- No, I think it is.
No, it isn't.
A-- are you responsible for
what you dream of, Nick?
Are you?
No. Instead, it just picks up
something from your day,
a random interaction and memory,
and then off it goes.
It's the subconscious.
We can't control it.
It's-- it's the same here.
We were foolish
to think we could
go back and change things.
It's only gonna make
things worse.
[Paul] What are you saying?
Do we stop now?
Yes, we've already lost.
Eh-- that's the thing, every
time we disconnect from this,
it struggles to put things back.
It messes up, and then
it fills our minds
with memories to adjust.
I mean, I have four
different memories
of how I got here today,
and I don't know which
is the real version.
But I had a life before this.
I had a wife and two sons.
Daughters.
You had two daughters.
[Ruth] Yeah.
She's right, it was two
daughters the first time.
Yeah.
Yeah, two daughters.
I mean, I had
a family. You're saying?
I-- I'm saying we stop
trying to fix things
and simply learn to live
with how they are.
Who's to say we
don't open that door
and there's vampires
flying around.
Yeah? Chaos, mayhem,
a world we don't understand.
With giant ducks
eating people's heads.
Well, obviously that might be
cause for change.
But one thing I'm certain of is
every time we press that buzzer,
something horrible happens.
People have died.
Helen is dead.
But you hated Helen.
I loved Helen.
Miles... Helen didn't exist.
How could you say such a thing?
I'm sorry, I don't accept this.
Things can always be fixed.
This world... these cards
we were given.
I say we keep going.
Keep going 'til we get
everyone back.
'Til we get back to
where we were.
Or at least something
close to it.
Paul, don't you get it,
the mathematics of it all?
We can't even think straight.
I mean, even if we could somehow
recreate that reality,
we wouldn't even know
if we were there.
Yeah, we would.
We've got our profiles.
We have the records of
who we were.
[chuckles] I'm-- I'm sorry, but
we've already tried that.
I mean, thinking that was
the solution is
what got us into this mess.
[stammers] We can't just
imagine something
and then have it appear.
They're like dreams.
We can't control it.
Have you ever tried
to control something
that you've dreamed of
or fantasized about?
More than you know.
You can't do it.
Instead, it just picks up
something random
and snowballs out of control.
That's what this is...
but it's on a
world-threatening scale.
No... no, worse.
It's a scale that threatens
all existence
and reality as we know it.
We shouldn't be fucking with it.
Wait, what if...
What?
[dramatic music]
Nothing, I just...
I can't dream.
- I never have.
- [Ruth] Hold on...
You can't dream?
[Paul] I don't care.
All I know is that
in this world,
my family doesn't exist.
And I can't live in a
reality like that.
So I'm going... whether
you like it or not.
I'm going, too.
I don't know anybody here.
My friends, they--
they're not my friends,
my family.
Even my strongest memories
don't align.
What, am I gonna live here
for living's sake?
- No.
- But it's not just about dying.
It's about being written
out of existence.
The only memories we have of
Jeremy are in our minds.
Kathryn, I mean--
I mean,
what happened to Kathryn?
Oh my God... where's Kathryn?
Who?
You guys didn't even realize.
I mean, that's--
that's what's at stake here.
At least here,
things can be rebuilt.
I mean, families, friends...
...new lives.
So what if I'm erased
from existence?
I can't live here.
I mean, living a life dictated
by something else.
I think we can still fix this.
Your life's always been
dictated.
It's all been a lie.
It-- it always has been.
We just have to accept what
we're given and that's it.
I don't care.
I mean, the little of my life,
like, the little part...
of my life that I do know...
it's just wrong.
I mean, I'm on my phone
looking at pictures of people
that I'm supposed to know...
...but there's something...
eerie and weird
and just creepy about all of it.
I mean, it's like some
AI generated version
of who I am.
[chuckles] And... I just know
that, somewhere out there,
I'm listening to dark rock and
watching horror movies
and I'm not gonna stop
until I find it.
Kelly?
I don't know.
Finally, somebody understands.
Understands?
No, I don't understand anything.
The least bit myself.
I don't know who I am or
who I've ever been.
I-- I had a boyfriend, I think,
but I can't even remember
his face.
And the more we do this...
the more unsure I am.
Who knows if we ever gonna
accept what we're given.
The only difference
is now that...
...we have the power
to change anything...
...but it will be
the most useless
power in the world because...
...we will never accept it.
Exactly.
Kelly, please.
But there is one thing
in this room
that does make any sense,
and that is Paul.
It might be the only thing that
is worth changing reality for.
To get a father back to
his daughters.
Sons.
Daughters.
Oh yeah, that's right.
You idiot.
Maybe it's...
I'm remembering my own father.
And how much that
he meant to me.
Or maybe it's just that I like
the idea of that type of love.
But that's the only thing
that really matters.
More than the rest of us.
I'll do this for Paul.
To bring his family back.
If I can do that, then...
...at least that's something
I'm good for.
I'll be happy I did it.
More so than being living in
this fake reality.
Unbelievable.
Uh-- You would risk your life,
y-- your very existence,
just for that?
I mean, I'm-- I'm not saying
it's not a noble cause,
but come on.
[Paul] We've already
gone too far, Miles.
To give up here
would be pointless.
This is still fixable.
[sighs]
Guess it's that
old human flaw of...
not knowing when to stop or--
or not being able to stop.
Yeah, I guess it is.
What are we waiting for?
[intense music]
I don't know how these
batteries work, but...
...looks like we've got
four buzzes left.
Four chances to put things
back together.
It's fully charged.
- [paper rustling]
- [soft thud]
Ready.
Ready.
Ready.
Last chance.
I'm sorry, Paul, but good luck.
Wait.
What will happen
if you stay here?
Will you be... recreated
in our new reality, or...
I don't know, Ruth.
Just be careful.
The Shroud isn't liking all
these changes.
It's trying to fight back.
That's what happened
to Jeremy and Kathryn.
Be wary of what's on
the other side.
[music building]
All right... on one.
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two.
...one.
[buttons clicking]
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[digitalized whoosh]
[buzzing fades]
[suspenseful music]
Nick?
[rhythmic thuds]
Kelly?
Ruth?
[sharp whoosh]
Ruth?
Ruth?
Ruth?
Oh my God.
Paul?
[sharp whoosh]
- What's going on?
- [Paul] I don't know.
When I buzzed...
everyone was gone.
Now, I-- I don't know.
Time's moving differently,
I think.
Nothing makes sense.
And there's--
There's someone
trying to kill us.
Who?
Him.
[music distorts, then increases]
Why is he trying to kill us?
Is he another one of Ruth's
horror movie memories?
I don't know, he might be.
Might be just The Shroud
trying to kill us off.
All right, come on, come on.
- Sometimes--
- [creature growls]
sometimes it moves differently.
Sometimes-- look out!
[distorted whoosh]
[music fades]
[Kelly] What the hell?
[ominous music]
[rewind sound]
[Ruth] Kelly?
Ruth!
Oh my God, I thought
you were dead.
Ruth, Ruth, are-- are you okay?
I just...
saw a duplicate of myself.
I mean, her hair was terrible.
I don't know...
what I'm most shocked by.
Ruth, listen, we need to find
the other ones.
Yeah? We can't stay here.
There is a killer around
trying to wipe us out.
We need to go, yeah?
Sure, I'm just gonna...
go fix my other self's hair.
I'll be back.
[Kelly] Ruth?
[distorted whoosh]
What the hell is happening?
[Nick] It's time.
[music fades]
[panting]
This reality doesn't know
what to do with time.
Nick?
It's messed up.
It's-- no, it's looping,
but uncontrollably.
It's jumping forwards and--
and backwards.
It's like it's having a spasm
or something.
That's it, I mean,
time-- time is spazzing.
It is spazzing out, Kelly.
What are you talking about?
We always have time,
linear time.
No, no, no, no.
Reality dictates time, Kelly.
Reality dictates everything.
There isn't anything that
it doesn't control.
Miles was right.
We screwed this whole thing up.
No, we can't think like that.
It doesn't matter what we think,
Kelly.
Wrong... we thought ourselves
into this mess.
We can think ourselves
out of it.
- Remember what Jeremy said then?
- God, Jer--
Jeremy was the idiot
that got us into this, Kelly.
[suspenseful music]
[panting]
You're not... Nick, are you?
Where are the jokes,
the optimism?
Who are you now?
[softly] I don't know.
[scoffs]
I don't know who I am.
Well, we need to
find the others.
There is a killer
trying to kill us.
- [sighs]
- Okay? I thought he got Ruth.
It did get Ruth.
But I just saw her--
she was fine.
It's probably before,
it's time loops, Kelly.
Guys, get out of here.
It's coming, go!
Oh, damn it.
You're about to loop again.
Usually happens when
your double shows up.
Look, listen, listen. We can't
stay here, we need to get out.
- Yeah, we need to get back to
the chairs and get yourself out.
- [Kelly] That was...
If you get the opportunity,
get yourself out.
- Okay?
- [mumbles, then screams]
[grunts]
[ominous music]
[blade slices and thuds]
[distorted whoosh]
[sighs]
[music quiets]
Guys, get out of here.
It's coming, go!
Shit. You're about--
You're about to loop again.
Usually happens when
your double shows up.
Get yourself out, okay?
[Kelly screams]
[distorted whoosh]
[music increases]
[distorted whoosh]
[Paul] Kelly!
[Kelly sobbing]
[breathing shakily]
Listen, listen.
Oh my God, what have we done?
Look, I know this
looks really bad, but...
You're really not helping.
Loo-- sorry... sorry.
We can fix this.
How?
Look, reality shifted,
that's all.
Things are a little different.
We went too far, Paul.
You saw what was out there.
How the hell are we gonna fix
any of this?
Too many people have died.
We didn't write anything down.
I don't even know
what's real or what's--
what's even possible
in life now.
Look, we still have
three buzzes left.
That's something.
Three chances to make it better.
It's not enough.
Shifting realities...
time spasms...
...augmented pasts.
It's not rocket science.
You're jumping over,
like, ten things.
Look, all we have to do
is figure out one thing.
What's that?
We just have to find out...
...who we are.
It's not gonna work, Paul.
And what's the point?
All of this?
Seeing it all... fall, fail.
All the laws of physics
or time I took for granted.
I mean, it's all fake.
- Kelly, you can't think like--
- And the scariest part of it all
is that in the end...
nothing matters.
Nothing. We all just made it up.
There is no meaning.
There is no purpose.
One plus one... equals five.
Up is down, left is...
a cucumber. It's all...
random, chaotic, pointless.
Why would we want to live
knowing that?
[Paul] You're right.
It's all a lie.
[soft chuckle]
But it's a beautiful lie.
[music turns emotional]
It's a creation of something
that wasn't there.
And because of it,
we have meaning.
Who cares if it isn't real?
We make it real.
Just like my children.
They might not be what
I think they are.
Boys, girls...
That doesn't mean my love
for them isn't real.
What their existence
does for me...
...and everything
I've experienced...
...I wouldn't give up
for anything.
It only means nothing
if you want it to.
But everything we've seen...
...how can we believe anything?
Accept anything?
[scoffs] We just do.
I might just be a-- [chuckles]
a bunch of particles bouncing
off one set or another.
But I believe I'm so much more.
We are so much more.
For Christ's sake,
we changed reality.
We can still fix it.
Otherwise...
[sighs] ...who knows?
We may have just destroyed
everything.
[sniffles]
Please, Kelly.
Please, we have to try.
[deep breath]
I'm sorry.
[groans] I mean...
...let's just get back to
find the buzzers, yeah?
- [sniffles] I-- I think
- [Paul sighs] Yeah.
I might have an idea too
anyway to do...
something about it.
[sighs]
[ominous music]
Paul?
[music increases abruptly]
Go, Kelly!
[blade whooshes]
[wet slashes]
[music turns to action]
[panting]
[distorted whoosh]
[panting]
[music continues]
[distorted whoosh]
[distorted whoosh]
[Miles] When I say one,
you hit the buzzer.
- Five... four...
- Miles? Jeremy?
three... two... one.
- [buttons click]
- [distorted whoosh]
[music continues]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[ominous sting]
- [eerie whoosh]
- [knife slices]
[heavy breathing]
[soft buzzing]
Jeremy.
- [button clicks]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
- [gasps]
- [buzzing fades]
[heavy breathing]
- [groans]
- [gasps]
[ominous music]
That was weird.
What was?
That last one.
[groans]
Last thing I remember,
there was a--
a giant duck, it was...
biting my head.
Really?
That was it?
What? You-- you don't
remember that?
How are you here?
What?
You were dead.
I mean, I saw you die.
What? No, I was just...
Oh... oh, uh...
Oh, you mean that thing
actually did--
Yes.
You were dead.
But you came back.
That last buzz--
you were trying to kill us.
- What? No, I--
I don't remember--
- Stop talking.
If you were dead,
how could you possibly be back?
Technically, explain it to me.
I-- [sighs] I don't know. Er...
If you're thinking what I think
you're thinking of...
...a dead body and a live body
make up the same
amount of particles,
so structurally speaking,
there's no difference.
It doesn't know how to kill us.
What do you mean?
How does that help us?
No, I--
- [chuckles softly]
- [dramatic music]
I think I know how to
fix everything.
Fix everything?
What's there to fix?
[inaudible]
- [door opens]
- No, don't!
Yeah, I guess this is not good.
[Kelly] Jeremy.
I know what to do.
What do you mean?
I brought you back.
I did, myself.
- Look, I'm not sure I even--
- Sit down.
- Alright, so--
- Shut up!
- Hey, don't--
- Shut up!
Shut up! Shut up!
Shut up! Shut up!
- Okay, I--
- Shut up!
Sorry, but I needed to
make that point.
I think it has to be me.
You know, the only one, thinking
when we change realities.
That's how I brought you back.
You did.
Brought me back to where?
Last time I checked, there's
still a void out there.
Just... trust me.
Alright, sure.
But it's not gonna be easy to
just switch off my-- my brain,
my-- my subconscious.
[Kelly] I know, but I think the
problem before was
too many cooks in the kitchen.
All of our minds
aren't lining up.
There has to be
one dominant mind
deciding on what reality
is going to be.
Dominant mind?
And why wouldn't it be mine?
What makes yours so special?
I don't know.
Because... I don't dream, maybe.
And why would that
mean anything?
Look, again, I don't know.
But you have to trust me
on this one.
I can do this, please.
All right.
Hand me the profiles.
[lock clicks]
[paper rustling]
[paper rustling]
We still have two buzzes left
on the charge, right?
[light clicking]
Ah... crap.
I thought we had more.
It's okay.
I'll bring all of us back.
Everyone.
- You sure? I mean, I could--
- No!
Don't even look at the profiles.
Only me, it's important.
Just keep your mind
clear of anything.
[paper rustling]
Once I bring all of
our minds back
with the power of all
of our consciousness,
I'll focus on whatever's
outside those doors.
Hopefully I can bring us to
a reality we all remember.
That makes sense?
Would that work?
Come on, Jeremy.
You said yourself that
more minds make this
thing more effective.
I'm really hoping you know what
you're talking about.
Theoretically, if...
your mind can alone command ours
and do what you think it can do,
then... yeah.
That's the best approach.
- It can work.
- Great.
Phew...
When did you get so smart?
So authoritative?
I don't know. I guess I changed.
Maybe I borrowed parts of
everyone's personality.
Do you have a strange need to
drink all of a sudden?
A little.
It's good to know that
Dean's in there
to balance out
your intelligence.
I should, uh--
I should close this.
- [paper rustling]
- Okay.
Just take this back.
Put it inside the container.
Are you sure that container will
protect all of the profiles?
Yeah, I mean, it has so far,
hasn't it?
[lock clicks]
Trust me, the material this
container is made of
will keep this safe forever.
Now... where do I sit?
Anywhere, it doesn't matter.
- Jeremy,
- [sighs]
- if we get out of this--
- When we get out of this.
When we get out of this,
you're gonna have to give me
as much of that special material
so this can never happen again.
Sure thing, I've got plenty.
Okay, great.
Now, shut up and
don't think of anything.
And if you can't help but think
of something,
then just think about giving all
your brain power
to whatever I'm about to
conjure up.
Ready?
Ready.
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[Paul] Kelly...
Kelly, are you alright?
[music fades]
[sighs] What's different?
What's-- what's
happened this time?
[synth-wave music]
[soft sigh]
I was stabbed in the chest.
Me too.
What?
I don't remember any of that.
I don't think you existed
for the last couple of
realities, Kathryn.
Oh... wait, what?
D-- did it work?
Like, is this... normal?
No... not yet.
We still need...
to do one more buzz.
Right, Kelly?
Can someone explain to me how
I didn't exist for a second?
I think we should just
be happy and
count our lucky stars
that we're back.
I don't think my family's back.
[exhales frustrated]
You and that stupid family.
We just brought ourselves back
from not existing, Paul.
I'm just saying.
I only focused on bringing us
back this time.
I don't know what reality
is out there for us.
Well... why don't we
just go and see?
[all] No!
Don't open that door.
We don't know what is out there.
We don't want to know.
W-- what do you mean, Kelly,
"you brought everybody back?"
How's this possible?
I don't know.
I just thought that one person
concentrating on change
was better than all of us
at the same time.
And it worked.
I don't know why.
Let's not look a gift horse
in the mouth.
Kelly seems to be able to--
to do it and we all
owe her our thanks.
But, you know, we-- we just need
one more buzz
to get us back to--
to where we started.
[sighs] Do we even remember
what that was?
I don't remember anything,
it's-- it's all a mix.
I don't remember
anything either.
But that's nothing new.
Look, I just wanna
get out of here.
Something, anything that
resembles our reality.
I'll take dinosaurs, whatever.
Kelly... I trust you.
One more time and
then we're back.
Ruth?
Hey, I was dead a second ago.
I'm just happy to be talking.
- Okay.
- [Nick] Well?
What do we do? We just...
let Kelly drive the ship?
Pretty much.
Try to think of nothing or...
if you have to think of
something, think about giving
all your mental strength
to Kelly,
whatever that means.
That's what I did and
it seemed to work.
[ethereal music]
Alright.
I'll bring us back.
Everyone ready?
Miles?
[Nick] Miles?
You realize this is
the only way?
Do you understand how lucky we
are that Kelly can even do this?
Don't you trust me, Miles?
Yeah, I guess I do.
More than anybody else here, anyway.
Don't worry, I'll bring us back.
Of course.
Good luck.
Kelly, do you need the files?
No, I've got it this time.
Okay.
Here we go, people, last stop.
- Home.
- Oh...
Jeremy, you're gonna jinx it.
Nick, you're gonna jinx it.
Okay, everyone just shut up.
Clear your minds,
except for you, Kelly.
On one.
[music building]
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing fades]
[music fades]
[groaning]
Did it work? Are we back?
I don't know, but...
that was our last charge.
Meaning that whatever
Kelly's thought of
is our reality now, uh--
We have to accept it.
[sobbing softly]
[dramatic music]
Thank you.
Yes!
Oh, thank God.
[Ruth] I think it worked.
I mean, my friends,
I recognize them.
Nora, Felipa, Jane.
Same here.
Just as I remember it.
Well, that's good enough for me.
It worked.
You did it, Kelly.
- [all chuckling]
- [Nick] You did it, Kelly!
- Amazing.
- Thank God.
[indistinct chattering]
[Paul] Thanks, Kelly.
You brought my family back.
My daughters.
And my son.
I'm just glad they're all back.
Sorry, I've gotta call them.
- Yes.
- [Dean] Hey!
[chuckles]
Billy's Chicken Mart is back.
[sighs] Well done, Kelly.
[indistinct chatter]
[Nick] Hey, Jeremy...
Don't think we're not still all
incredibly pissed with you.
[rain pouring]
But for now... I'm going home.
Me too.
Look, I-- I apologize.
Jeremy, for once, just shut up.
[Paul] Uh...
Thanks again, Kelly.
Jeremy...
destroy those chairs,
those devices, all of them.
Please.
Don't worry,
I'll make sure he does.
Well, you did it.
You brought us all back.
I don't know how, but...
...I guess you were
the dominant mind after all.
Yeah, something like that.
Listen, Jeremy.
What material did you use
to protect the profiles?
Because I'd read them many times
and they weren't altered.
I'm sure of it.
Do you have more of it?
Well, yeah, I've got heaps, but
it's not what you think it is.
Those steel containers are just
ordinary steel containers.
There's nothing special
about them.
Then how--
You thought they would work...
because I told you
they would work.
And you believed me,
you trusted me.
And then your subconscious mind
did also.
And then when everything else
was changing around us,
they remained untouched.
To be honest, I didn't know
if it would work,
but... there it is.
Interesting.
So, uh, should I burn these or
take them apart?
No.
Just store them away somewhere.
And don't tell anyone but me.
If anyone asks,
you did destroy them.
Sure, whatever you want.
It's your world, after all.
[upbeat synth music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[music fades]
[woman sobbing, panting]
[man] Listen, listen, listen!
[woman sobbing]
Oh my God, what have we done?
Look, I know this looks
really bad, but...
[suspenseful music]
You're really not helping.
Loo-- sorry... sorry.
We can fix this.
How?
Look, reality shifted,
that's all.
Things are a little different.
[woman sobbing]
We went too far, Paul.
You saw what was out there.
How the hell are we gonna fix
any of this?
Too many people have died.
We didn't write anything down.
I don't even know
what's real or what's--
what's even possible
in life now.
Look, we still have
three buzzes left,
that's something.
Three chances to make it better.
It's not enough.
Shifting realities...
time spasms...
...augmented pasts.
It's not rocket science.
You're jumping over,
like, ten things.
Look, all we have to do is
figure out one thing.
[music building]
What's that?
[Paul]
We just have to find out...
...who we are.
[deep rumble]
[music fades]
[man] Marcus Aurelius once said,
"Everything we see is
perspective, not the truth".
Any of you have
any idea what that means?
- Yes, Miles?
- [Miles] Um...
That what we see is our
understanding of what happened,
not necessarily
how it actually is?
[clicks tongue] Correct.
That phrase emphasises the fact
that our understanding
of reality
is shaped by our individual...
viewpoints and experiences,
rather than as a direct
reflection of objective truth.
For example, two people witness
a fight or an argument.
One person sees someone
attacking another person
for no reason,
whereas the other person knows
that just a moment earlier
that person
tried to steal
his or her wallet or purse.
One person sees it as
attacking an innocent,
the other person sees it as
defending their property.
What we believe,
what we've witnessed,
uh, our backgrounds
and our beliefs,
all factor in
to how we see...
...everything,
how we process what is...
true or real.
Perspective is everything.
Perspective is reality.
That's why I've brought you
all here today.
My name is Jeremy,
I study neuroscience here,
- and I'm trying to--
- How long is this, sorry?
'Cause I have somewhere
to be at eight.
[sighs] We'll be done by then.
Great.
I suspect a lot of you
aren't here for a lesson,
but rather for the $200
that was promised.
Yep.
All right, all right, all right.
I won't bore you
too much longer,
but the experiments
that you've all signed up for
over the next day or two,
are based in perspective
and reality.
How are the two linked?
I'll be running
a series of tests,
followed by a final test,
which might break the walls--
Sorry to interrupt, Jeremy,
but I--
[Jeremy] Yes, Miles.
[stammers] Haven't we all done
this before?
What do you mean?
I-- I don't know.
I-- I thought--
I mean, I'm having
serious dj vu of
being in a room like this
with someone like yourself.
[stuttering] I don't know.
Anyone else?
Sorry, I--
I must be confusing it
with another situation.
Yeah, maybe your
alcoholic's anonymous meeting.
[everyone snickering]
Yeah, that'd be it.
[all chuckle]
Well, anyway,
we'll start by getting you all
to do a number of
personality trait videos,
to get a more detailed profile
of you guys.
A profile of us?
Yeah, just to get
a sense of who you are,
your situation.
How you're different
from each other,
just to ensure
that the final experiment...
yields the best results.
Kathryn.
You are in a rush.
You go first.
Perfect. [scoffs]
[upbeat working music]
So, what is your most defining
personality trait?
Um...
I'm kind, I'm caring.
I like to cook.
I believe in maintaining
a healthy outlook.
Have a strong sense
of adventure.
[Jeremy] Paul, this--
this isn't a dating video.
I'm pretty shy...
I mean, I get so scared
a lot of the time.
Going out, public speaking,
all of that stuff.
However, I do love scary movies,
so, you know...
Make of that what you will.
[man] Uh, g'day.
I'm Nick, 27.
Um... solid seven out of ten.
[exhales] Once had a dog
lick my face
to get out of a relationship.
Uh, recently learned
how to menstruate.
I'm... a drinker.
I love a good pub call or
a sports bar with my mates
or occasionally a winery trip
every now and again.
[Jeremy] Dude,
those are all the same thing.
Um, are they, though?
[Jeremy]
Just say you're an alcoholic.
Uh...
Then I'm an alcoholic.
What should I say?
Just part of your personality
that's original to you, unique.
Something that makes you
different from the rest.
Like what?
[Nick] When was the last time
you had sex?
[sighs] Nick, get out of here.
[Nick laughs]
Sorry about that.
[Kathryn] That is so immature.
How many--
- [woman] Kathryn!
- What?
Guys, can you stop?
I'm not into partying,
celebrating,
any of that nonsense, uh...
I'm looking for new causes.
Innovation, which is why
I found this whole
experiment interesting.
I tend to think...
if I never kissed
Chris Noble in year 12,
my life would have turned out
completely differently.
I mean, what was I thinking?
I've got a rough side.
I'm cautious.
I think that's what it is, cautiousness.
Also, I hate bad hair
on anyone, but especially me.
It's probably
one of my greatest fears.
Next to death.
If I ever had kids,
I'll call them Rex,
Martin and Bobo.
Purely just to annoy my mother.
I've never really done anything
out of my comfort zone.
Wanna travel... Europe,
America, whatever, but...
...I keep on letting
things get in the way.
What the hell are these
questions for, Jeremy?
You'll find out.
Why does that scare me?
Can I, uh, tell a joke?
Fine, but I really
wanna hear from you--
What does a Polish man give his
wife on their wedding night
that's long and hard?
His last name.
[laughs]
My plan is to go corporate.
Partner, manager,
something high level
in the next five years.
I also work out, I go for runs.
I go to the gym too.
You don't go for runs.
No, I don't, sorry.
Don't worry,
this is all great stuff.
Really?
Yeah. Shows me you're a liar.
[music continues]
So, are we getting cash?
Or you-- you'll transfer?
Do you know how long it'll take?
I swear we've done this before.
You don't have to tell me
anything if you don't want to--
No, I'm-- I'm serious.
I feel like we've done
this all before.
- Have we?
- You know we haven't.
I'm a problem solver.
I like crosswords, puzzles.
But really, I'm someone who can
see how things can be improved.
I usually step up to
the leadership roles.
I don't know... sometimes...
I think I have an idea
of what kind of person I am.
And then other times I see
myself doing something
- completely different.
- [music turns reflective]
Shouldn't I know...
a little bit better
about myself at 25?
How is it I'm still...
...discovering all these things
after all this time?
I mean, I ask myself
the same questions.
Well... [sighs]
Good. [chuckles]
At least I'm not the only one.
I think it's everyone, Kelly.
I think that's...
all part of being alive.
Figuring out who you are.
[music fades]
Alright, thanks everyone.
Hope I didn't keep you too long.
Nope... one hour on the dot.
You all just earned
yourselves 100 bucks.
[everyone cheer]
[Jeremy] I'm gonna
compile these videos.
Man, some of you guys really
like to talk about yourselves.
- [Nick] He's talking
about you, Ruth.
- [Ruth] He's referring to you.
[Jeremy] Alright, final
experiment's on Thursday.
Don't be late.
It's gonna be very interesting
I'm super excited.
Can't wait to see you all there.
[upbeat, jazz music]
[woman] So what is it,
this final test?
It's like electric
shocks or something?
[Kelly] It did say that there
was going to be some kind of
small electric exposure.
Whatever.
Um... but the other day
we only talked about
our personalities.
About ourselves.
It's supposedly
to do something about
perspective or something.
I don't know, it all seemed
pretty pointless to me.
Main guy Jeremy seems alright.
[woman] Kelly,
you're already dating a guy.
- [Kelly] No!
- I did not mean it that way.
- [chuckles]
Okay?
No, he's just-- he's very smart,
and not too serious.
But...
[woman] What?
[Kelly] I don't know.
There was something
about him...
- that seems...
- Off?
[Kelly] Not off.
He just-- he thinks that
he's very smart.
The smartest guy in the room.
And we are his test subjects.
But you literally are,
aren't you?
[clicks tongue] Yeah.
I don't know, I guess
I'm just very nervous
about his final test
that he keeps on talking about.
It's 200 bucks.
For what? Two hours?
I'd get electrified for that.
[chuckles] Yeah.
You don't even wanna know...
what I would do for 200 bucks.
Hey no! I'm gonna stop you
right there.
[keyboard clacking]
[man] 200 bucks?
Yeah.
[man] Why didn't you
get us on that?
I asked. You would...
asked him or something,
I don't know.
What is it they do to you?
Butt stuff, is it?
Uh, no... butt stuff.
It's about... perspectives
or reality or something.
[clear throat] For 200 bucks?
They'll probably do,
like, some...
- blood samples
or something, you know?
- [man] Yeah.
[Paul] No, they didn't take
any blood samples.
It's an interesting experiment.
Quite a curious member
of the university.
Honestly.
I find his ideas...
quite interesting.
Really?
What, you're thinking grants?
Well, maybe.
Checking it out now.
They've already given him
a couple of grand
for this experiment, so...
Well, what's
the final test, then?
He mentioned something
about light shock therapy.
And the university
is allowing this?
[woman] It's probably that
hypnotism thing.
You said he was detailing
your personalities or something, right?
Yeah, he's making like
a profile we get to read.
What? Why would you
let him do that?
Now he can probably like...
guess your credit card pin or
your bank password
or something like that.
- Oh--
- It's probably a con.
Good, he can have
the few hundred dollars
I have in my bank account.
I literally could care less.
Seriously?
Identity theft?
Ever heard of it?
[Kathryn] Oh, come on.
Google knows more
about me than this guy.
Plus, I'm gonna take out
insurance on the bank.
And maybe I could say
I had more.
Oh my God!
[both laughing]
[man clears throat] So what is
this experiment anyway?
Definitely butt stuff.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
The head guy, Jeremy...
[scoffs] ...he's got a butt
fetish written all over him.
[deep breath]
So you, um--
you still gonna do it?
Yeah.
Why not?
And...
[shouts indistinctly]
[woman chuckles] I don't think
it's gonna be anything creepy.
The main guy, Jeremy,
he seems alright.
But, I think he thinks
I'm an idiot.
[woman 2 over phone]
Ugh! come on, blow it off!
I'm dying to go to Domo's.
Chelsea said it's awesome
and you're
the only other person
I know that hasn't gone.
No, I have to go now.
I wanna see what
it says in our profiles.
[scoffs] I bet he hates me.
[music continues]
[keyboard clacking]
[music softens]
[music fades]
I knew it was butt stuff.
It's not... butt stuff.
Calm down, everyone, just, uh...
please, take a seat.
Wherever you want.
Are those chairs... electrified?
[Jeremy] No, not now.
Uh, but nothing to worry about.
It's just the metal tops
on the rubber balls
that will give you...
a little buzz.
But nothing too horrible.
The charge is coming out of
these AA batteries here.
Not even enough to boil an egg.
So it's--
please, it's quite safe.
That looks like the cheapest
thing I've ever seen.
Is that sticky tape you used to
stick those batteries together?
Looks like it was
made by a child.
It's a prototype device.
Look, like I said, it may not
look it, but it is... safe.
So... please, I've tested it.
Take a seat.
[suspenseful music]
[man] Really?
[clears throat]
I suppose you've all
probably been wondering
what it is I've been cooking up
for the final part of this test.
Have any of you ever heard
the theory of
panpsychism or biocentrism?
Nick?
No, I haven't heard of that,
Jeremy.
What is it?
Helpful as always, Nick.
What about our profiles?
Can we read them?
I have them, they're...
...in that protective case
over there.
[man] Protective?
Protective from... what?
From whatever happens tonight.
Look, there's nothing to worry
about now.
Now, please, no more
interruptions.
Panpsychism is what we will be
testing tonight.
It proposes that...
consciousness is a fundamental
aspect of reality.
In other words, what if we were
all connected?
What if that dictated how we
see, hear, feel, everything?
What if none of that...
even exists?
Now, for one, it's a theory that
is almost impossible
to disprove,
because, I can pick up
an apple, eat it, digest it.
I can affect things,
and you can see it.
The laws of physics and
mathematics still exist,
but these could all still be
under the guise of a universal
consciousness that...
we accept...
purely because...
we don't know it's there.
Uh... a question.
So, I don't understand a w--
word of what you just said.
Dean is confused.
It's hurt itself in the
confusion.
Also, Jeremy, I, uh--
I don't know what
the hell you just said.
What if we are all connected?
Mentally sharing an
invisible signal like...
a big human internet.
And the way we see and
hear everything,
that all that information
is determined by
- that big... human internet.
- Wait, wait, wait...
what evidence do you have that
this is something, like,
this is even possible?
Or is it simply theoretical?
Yeah, surely we'll
be able to detect
some kind of shared
mental signal.
If we can detect
radio waves, surely.
Have you ever heard of the
Mandela effect, Paul?
Have you ever seen something...
a color different from what
your friend saw, Kelly?
The gold-white dress,
or the blue-black dress,
Laurel or Yanny?
There are things in this world
that don't always add up.
Inconsistencies.
These are just a few
recent examples.
Hell, even the other night,
Miles here...
thought we'd already
done the experiment.
Well, that was just dj vu.
Maybe.
Or maybe, the mind
doesn't have a way
of dealing with all this
information that it's sharing,
this... lie that it's
cultivating
all so that we can
process the world to
produce clear, rational thought.
Oh, this is hurting my head now.
[sniffs]
Kathryn...
...what is the universe made of?
Space? Earth?
Air? Trees?
Smaller than that.
What are all those things
made of?
I mean, like, carbon and...
hydrogen and stuff?
Smaller.
[dreamy music]
Particles?
Exactly.
This room isn't a solid object.
It's all particles,
quarks and leptons,
bouncing around off each other.
The mind can't simply show us
trillions of particles, all
those elements, electrons,
neurons bouncing around...
so instead it chooses
to show us...
- [soft thud]
- ...a chair
or a watch or a door...
or a whole other figure
with fingers and a heart and
a brain capable of thoughts,
memories, dreams...
all so that we can make sense
of this life.
That is the power of our
conscious minds.
So... why do we see things
th-- the way we do?
Like, why do I have...
...five fingers and not...
...three or... six?
I don't know.
Maybe it's a balance.
You know, why are we not
big dinosaur creatures?
Or why is that table
not a floating bubble?
Why is a duck not a cow?
Maybe it's evolution.
Who knows? Maybe it's
the best-case scenario
or whatever makes
the most sense.
Whatever it is, it is what
we know as... reality.
Alright, so... if there's this
whole realm of human
consciousness
that we're all living in...
that dictates reality,
then what is
your experiment about?
Easy.
I want to detach from it.
You see I've... discovered a way
to temporarily separate
our minds
from the giant collective
consciousness.
On your chairs, on the armrests,
you'll see a rubber ball
with a bit of metal on top.
That is connected directly to an
electrical signal
which will send a small shock
to a very particular part
of your brain,
I believe, is responsible for
keeping us connected to the, uh,
well... I've been calling it
"The Shroud."
It's like switching a modem on
and off for the internet.
Is this like Scrotum's cat
or something?
[chuckles] Yeah, yeah,
it's definitely like
Scrotum's cat. Mm-hmm.
Wait, so you want us to
volunteer
to electrocute our brains...
to completely disconnect
from what we know as reality?
Theoretically, it will only be
a very brief
disconnection from The Shroud,
only for a moment,
and then we'll be reconnected.
I want to see what happens...
in that moment.
I've made sure that we're
far enough away
from all other minds
so that it should only affect us
based on previous tests.
You've already done this?
A couple of times.
It's very safe, painless.
You should only feel
a small jolt.
What happened?
Something very interesting.
But also...
the results were limited.
Not enough to give me any proof,
but...
I have a feeling that with...
more minds
disconnected at the same time,
we should yield
very different results.
Wait...
...are we sure we wanna do this?
Kelly?
You're saying you want us
to play around with the...
fabric of reality, essentially.
I'm not sure if a group of
people with
just a standard electric switch
should be doing this.
[chuckles]
[Nick] Calm down, Kelly.
It's not that dangerous.
It's just a couple of
AA batteries.
I-- I'm sorry if I scared you,
Kelly.
But, I really doubt that we'll
experience anything like...
[sighs] I'm not gonna turn you
into a turtle or something.
It's only a very small test.
Then why you made us do all that
personality testing?
Are you afraid you might
change us or something?
[sighs] Well, yes,
but... nothing major.
Only... maybe hair color
will change,
the way you pronounce
certain words.
Uh, maybe your clothes
will change.
That's all that will happen
if anything happens at all.
Look, I don't wanna scare
any of you.
So... if anyone's feeling unsure
about this,
you don't have to go
through with the test.
I'm not gonna force you
to do anything.
This is all voluntary.
The door is right there.
[Kelly] Sorry guys.
[Jeremy] Before you go...
let me ask you this.
What if you had the power to
create or change
anything in your life?
To bend your own reality
to your will?
To change a simple rock...
into a thing of beauty?
[suspenseful music]
Holy crap, is that gold?
Did you make gold?
Like I said,
my results are limited,
but I believe with more minds
we could change more than, uh...
just a rock.
Holy crap.
You could have bought
that online or found it
on a goldmine or something.
That's not proof of anything.
You're right, I could have,
but I didn't.
And the only way
you'll know for sure
is if you join me
in this experiment.
Kelly?
Think about it, Kelly.
Isn't there anything
in your life that you would...
want to change,
that you would improve?
If there is, this could be
your best chance.
Oh, come on, Kelly,
let's do this.
Ha! I'm gonna bring
a Ferrari into the room.
Don't pressure her,
she's obviously feeling
a bit overwhelmed.
Come on, Kelly, it'll be fun.
Yeah, come get
electrocuted with us.
[scoffs]
Kelly, you don't
have to do this.
[music continues]
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
[everyone]
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Kelly, Kelly, Kelly, Kelly...
Okay, okay.
- [everyone whoops]
- [Nick] Yeah!
- Woo! Yeah!
- [Kathryn] Yes!
[indistinct cheering
and whooping]
All right, all right.
Settle down.
Hands off the ball.
Hey, I didn't get to look
at the... gold.
Like I said,
it's... very slow voltage,
but it's still enough to give
you a nasty little buzz.
Everybody all good?
Remember, you can tap out
at any time, no shame.
Just flick the switch already, pussy.
Nick! You can't say that.
[chuckles]
Okay, now to make sure
this works the same
for everybody,
I'm gonna need you to place
your thumb over--
over the joystick there.
Place it firmly.
The jolt needs to hit you
there and then
travel up your arm to your neck.
It needs to hit a
very specific nerve
to hit the part of the brain
that I want, okay?
[sighs] The more you talk about
frying our brains,
the less I wanna do this.
Yeah, quit talking us out of it.
All right, get ready.
[dial clicks]
[soft buzzing]
It's live.
[sighs]
Now, when I count down
from five,
I want you all to push down
on the metal prong.
After I get to one, got it?
- Got it.
- Yeah, got it, after one.
- Yeah.
- [Nick] Got it.
- Got it.
- [Kathryn] Yeah.
[Dean] Got it.
Okay... five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one...
- ...go!
- [buttons clicking]
- [deep rumble]
- [high-pitched buzzing]
[soft groans]
[buzzing intensifies]
[groaning]
[buzzing fades]
Did anything happen?
I don't know... did it?
That button worked,
that buzz friggin' hurt.
Uh-- I saw a white flash.
Same.
I-- I don't think it worked.
[chuckles]
[tense music]
Holy crap.
Yeah... we switched seats
somehow.
Oh God, you're right.
Kathryn, you were sitting
right next to me
just a second ago.
[exhales] Oh my God.
Shit, am-- am I all right? A--
Are you all right?
Yeah, I'm fine.
[chuckles]
I'm fine.
It's okay, everyone, this is
exactly what I thought
was gonna happen.
Now, everyone,
stand up we're gonna...
walk around a bit,
check your phone,
wallet, keys, clothes,
look for any... changes.
Subtle as they might be,
they could all be evidence
that The Shroud exists.
[music builds]
[Kelly] Oh my God!
My phone's different.
Different how?
I mean, the apps and contacts
are all the same, but
the phone...
this is the latest model.
I bought my phone
three years ago.
You're kidding.
Oh my God, this is the 17.
I was gonna get
one of these myself.
Holy crap, Kelly wished herself
a new phone?
Amazing. See, the brain...
...it documents so many things,
but there are
some things which...
it categorizes as unimportant,
who you're sitting next to,
what kind of phone you have.
I wouldn't be surprised if there
are more things here.
Miles, your hair is different.
And Nick, you were wearing a
black top before,
and now it's blue.
Was I?
Was he?
You don't remember that?
I remember a black top.
Vaguely, but I'm-- I'm pretty
sure I put on a blue shirt.
I thought it was a white shirt.
Three different colors.
Well, there's no way
we're gonna know
what color it was originally.
You see, I've always wondered
if the brain had a way to...
recreate memories to help it
explain these lapses.
Like when something
unpredictable happens.
It... creates this scenario in
which it protects itself.
Uh, or maybe it's the collective
consciousness that does.
It's-- it's almost like a
living, breathing entity.
What, The Shroud?
Yes.
Do you realize what this means?
It means that our
consciousness...
is the real reality of our
world, not the physical.
The physical is a lie.
Electrical bursts into
nerve endings
that were never even there.
Dude, you're making
my head hurt again.
I'm saying that we can literally
manifest our lives,
our entire world.
But... I didn't want
a new phone.
I did.
Wait, not even subconsciously?
[Miles] Wait, Jeremy, uh...
If you're saying The Shroud,
the human internet or
whatever, is living...
...then wouldn't it try
to protect itself?
I-- if it created this reality
to help us...
...then what if we start
destroying it
like we've been doing here? I--
Wouldn't it fight back?
[Paul] Oh my God.
What have you done?
What's happened? What's changed?
Well, I was... looking for
changes, you know.
I looked in my wallet
for the photo of my family.
It's not there.
So I thought maybe
I just dropped it.
And then I checked my address
on my license and...
...it's not my address.
I live at 3 Boulevard Crescent.
This says 270-5 Eaton Avenue,
a freaking apartment.
What are you saying?
You lost your house?
How is that possible?
[Paul] No, it's just...
I tried calling my wife.
There was no answer and...
...the phone number
doesn't exist.
So I... looked her up
on Facebook.
She's married to someone else.
What have you done?
[Kelly] But...
I thought you said that
it would only affect us.
Jeremy?
Wait, wait, come on now,
all this could just be a prank
or you've looked up
the wrong name.
I know my wife's face, okay?
Problem is...
I can't remember my children's.
How can you forget
your kids' faces?
Because they never existed.
Look, we're jumping to
extremes here.
It doesn't affect anyone.
Jeremy... [stammers]
we're all connected.
No matter how far or how
isolated, we're all connected.
[stammers] Your whole theory
is based on this.
But my previous test didn't have
any results like these.
Are you kidding?
How could you not prepare for
something like this?
I did. Uh-- I made sure
we could get us
back to how everything was.
Don't worry, Paul.
If this has actually happened,
I can get us back.
How?
Those profiles in that case over
there, they're protected.
We just need to read them...
and remember who we are
to get us back.
Are you serious?
That's why I made us do them.
Those profiles detail everything
about us, who we are,
what we do,
all of our information.
They are the fail-safe
in case anything like this...
happens.
Don't worry, Paul.
I can get it back.
It's gonna be all right.
But how does that help us?
You're saying we just...
remember our lives,
buzz and it all will return?
Yeah.
Of course.
We just need to reset it,
that's it.
Wait, you mean do it again?
Won't that risk it
for all of us?
[Paul] Kathryn...
...this is my family.
It's my life.
I know, but can't you
just do it, Paul?
Why do all of us have to?
It will only work if we
all do it at the same time,
like before, Kathryn.
Uh, that's the only reason
any of this has happened,
because of the size
of the disconnect.
Wait... I'm with Kathryn.
Aren't we now risking having
all our lives messed up
just for one person?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, surely
there is another way.
Trust me.
If we read through the profiles
and remember our lives,
we can get back to how
everything was.
What we can't do, though,
is what we're doing now
and panic.
No, no, no. No.
I'm not up for this.
[Paul] Please.
This is my family.
It's my life.
I've been married 15 years.
My daughters--
My daughters are
11 and 13 years old.
Now they're gone.
Sophie...
It's my oldest. I can--
I can barely see her.
My youngest.
They're my everything.
Can't you understand that?
Fifteen years, everything that
I've shared and built...
It's gone.
Oh my God.
We can't let his family
disappear, can we?
All right, e-- everyone
just calm down.
Paul, you don't know
anything yet.
A-- a phone call, a missing
photo, a Facebook status?
[dry laugh] Jesus, man,
you think it's all gone because
his-- someone's shirt changed
and-- and she has a new phone.
But, this could all just be
some magic trick
by Jeremy the Wonderful
or something.
Jeremy the Wonderful?
And the Facebook changes,
the missing phone numbers?
Who knows?
[stammers]
Go to your house, Paul.
Find out more information.
You-- You're really all
jumping to conclusions here.
Yeah.
Yeah, sure, y-- you're right.
I'll go with you, um...
Everyone else... stay here.
We won't be long.
Just to be sure.
We'll wait here.
[Kelly] This isn't happening.
[footsteps approaching]
What are you waiting for?
I'm sure everything... is fine.
E-- even if we have changed more
than we think we have...
...I can fix it.
Just... stay here.
We'll be back soon.
[door closes]
This is nuts, isn't it?
Kelly, did your phone
really change?
I don't care if
Paul's family's gone.
I'm not getting back
in that chair.
No, no, no, no, no.
[dry laugh] I'm not--
no, not happening, no.
[playful, intriguing music]
So, I want to thank you all
for this.
My family's everything to me.
I'm only doing this
because you said
Billy's Chicken Mart had
disappeared,
and I love Billy's chicken.
I could care less about you
and your five kids.
Two kids.
Whatever.
[Jeremy] Remember, everybody,
I want you to read
through your profiles,
keep it in your mind of...
who you are,
your family, your possessions,
anything and everything
about who you were.
And we want you to keep it in
your brain, otherwise...
I-- I think you gave me
Kathryn's by mistake.
Yeah, I got Miles.
[Dean] Ditto.
- Really?
- [Nick] Yeah.
I'm pretty sure
I'm not "46 years old
with the temptation
of being a furry."
- [paper rustles]
- Give me that.
Okay, sorry guys,
just swap them.
I'm still pretty nervous
about all of this.
[Kelly] It's all right, Jeremy.
Just get us back
to before, yeah?
Ruth, just saying, you watch way
too many horror films.
Some of those points are weird.
Okay, okay, forget about hers,
just focus on your own.
Read through your profiles,
and when you're done,
I'll collect them up
put them back
in the container...
[music continues]
[paper rustling]
- [paper rustling]
- [lock clicks]
Are you sure that case
is protected?
What if it all goes wrong again?
Trust me, the material
this case is made of
is specially designed to
keep what's in there safe.
I just wish I had enough to
cover this entire room,
but I don't.
If it goes wrong again, we just
do it again
until we get it right.
How long do those
batteries last?
What if we go to a reality
that doesn't use batteries?
Well, then we find
another power source.
Don't worry, there is
enough charge in these
for at least another...
six or seven buzzes, I think.
I'm gonna leave this on
this time.
Get ready.
Amelia, Sophie, Leanne,
my beautiful family.
University student,
second year in business,
dating Henry... I like my life?
I'm not an alcoholic, I'm not an
alcoholic, I'm not an alcoholic.
You're the shit, Nick,
always have been.
Big dick on campus.
Peanut, my cat.
Rony, my bestie.
Trevor...
No, actually, forget Trevor.
Trevor never existed.
Five seconds.
Everybody keep your thumbs
on the prongs.
On one this time.
Four... three... two... one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing intensifies]
[sighs]
- [bird calling]
- [groans]
[buzzing fades]
[groaning]
Everybody all good?
- Paul?
- Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
Oh God, I felt it that time.
Did it work?
Did we switch it back?
I-- I think so, I have
everything I had before.
Me too.
My phone's still new.
Really?
Paul?
[suspenseful music]
[sighs]
It worked.
My wife.
And my two sons.
- Yes.
- [everyone clapping]
Congrats, Paul.
Oh, damn! Glad to hear it.
[indistinct chattering]
Yes.
[indistinct chatter]
[woman] God, I freaked out
there for a second.
Me too, my mind was racing
about what would happen
if my arm or leg disappeared.
My whole life.
- Hm...
- [Miles] Hang on.
Who the fuck is that?
[music fades]
Who is...
Her.
That's Helen.
Helen?
Who's Helen?
Where is Dean?
Yeah, where is Dean?
Who's Dean?
What, wait.
Yes.
Mmm, I don't remember a Dean.
Well, I don't remember Helen.
What are you saying?
I'm saying, Helen...
I don't think you exist.
Well, that's stupid.
She's been here with us
the whole time.
I kind of remember both of them,
but how's that possible?
A-- and Paul, didn't you have
two daughters and not two sons?
I, uh... no, I, uh--
I had two sons, Robert and Liam.
No, uh...
their names were
Sophie and Leanne.
You were repeating them
just before.
[sighs] Oh, shit.
What do you mean I don't exist?
I've been with you
all this entire time,
this entire stupid game.
[Nick] Is Dean Helen?
Like-- like is he her or...
[stammers]
I mean, is-- is that Dean or is
that a completely new person?
Jeremy?
[chuckles] No, uh, no.
No, this can't have happened.
We-- we all read the profiles.
They were accurate.
Did we mess up?
Are you sure?
I'm sure.
I know she didn't exist.
And Paul, you might
have a family, but...
it's not the same family
that you had before.
Jeremy, we have to
do this again.
- Get the profiles.
- [stammers and sighs]
Calm down, Miles. I'm still
running this experiment.
Again?
What, and screw more stuff up?
Wasn't the whole point to bring
Paul's family back?
Yeah, we did that.
Huh? No more buzzing.
That's not his family.
And have you already
forgotten about Dean?
We have to get Dean back.
- Sorry, who's Dean?
- What does that--
Shut up, Helen, you don't exist.
- Okay, take it easy.
- [all scoff]
We don't know what you're
talking about.
Dean, uh, remember...
he loved to drink and
was dumb as nails.
- Scrotum's cat.
- Yes.
Come on, while he's still
fresh in our minds,
we can get him back.
Hang on, if we rush this again,
there's no telling
what changes will occur--
We still don't know all the
changes that have happened now.
You're right.
We could be floating out
in space
- or wandering around.
- Wait!
[music increases, then halts]
What?
We have to be careful.
Who knows what
our minds are capable
of subconsciously creating.
What do you mean?
I mean, it's...
theoretically possible
that we could mix our
dreams with our memories.
We don't know how altered
our reality can get.
Looks pretty normal to me.
Wait, what is that?
[suspenseful music]
Are they... people?
They don't look like people.
Oh my God,
they're coming towards us.
- Holy crap, what do we do?
- Close the door.
- [door closes]
- Just calm down, everyone.
They're just students
wandering around campus.
Just... let me think for a sec.
What did we do wrong?
[music fades]
[heavy footsteps]
[footsteps get louder]
[footsteps stops]
[pounding on door]
[man] Hello?
[inaudible]
Yeah?
[doors rattling and slamming]
[heavy footsteps]
[whimsical music]
What the fuck?
Hi?
Hi.
Can I have a hug?
A hug?
Yes, please.
This is a private
experiment of sorts.
No students allowed.
I'm not a student.
My name's Mr. Beaucroft.
[Jeremy] S-- sure.
Uh...
Look, we're really
busy here, so--
Anyone will do.
Just a quick hug.
Can I please have a hug?
- You need to--
- I'm not leaving 'til
someone hugs me.
Fine, I'll do it.
It's okay, it's just
a kid in a costume.
- It's fine.
- No, it's-- it's all right.
I'll--
Ill do it.
Just leave us alone,
Mr... Beaucroft.
I'm not leaving 'til
someone hugs me.
I'm-- it's all right.
I'm-- I'll do it.
[laughs nervously]
How about a handshake?
I'm not so much of a--
a hugger, Mr. Beaucroft.
Okay.
I'll shake your hand.
I just want you to come here.
[ominous music]
[music increases, then halts]
Here I am.
Come on.
[growling]
[ominous music]
[growls]
[wet chewing sounds]
[screaming]
[Nick] Chairs, chairs!
Come on in, Mr. Dibbling,
Mr. Cavendish.
- They're delicious.
- [Nick] Chairs!
- [Miles] Get out of
my chair, Helen.
- [Helen] Just sit down!
[indistinct yelling]
Come on, press it!
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing fades]
[groans]
Guys?
Hello?
Nick?
Guys?
Ruth?
- Somebody in there?
- [wet screeching]
[ominous music]
Hello?
[eerie sting]
[chair squeaks]
[eerie sting]
[creature growls]
Oh, fuck it.
[button clicks]
[music builds]
[button clicking]
Come on...
[button continues clicking]
[eerie rumble]
Come on...
Come on...
Come on...
Come on, come on...
Come on...
- [creature screeches]
- Come on...
- Come on...
- [soft beep]
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[groans]
[buzzing intensifies]
[buzzing fades]
- Oh my God.
- What the fuck?
I'm back.
Kelly?
[Kelly] Ruth.
Is-- is that Ruth?
[groans]
Oh, in here...
I need a second.
Tell me about it.
It's feeling all...
scrambled.
[tense music]
[music continues]
I was in a field or a
park of some sort.
I was alone...
and there was
something in the distance
charging at me.
It didn't say anything...
...but... it was coming for me.
So I pressed the buzzer.
The exact same thing
happened to me.
Well, I wasn't in a field.
I was in a house.
There was something like...
banging on the door
trying to come in.
And I panicked.
Of course I pressed it.
But didn't Jeremy say
that the only reason why
this has worked so far is
because there were
multiple people present
at the same time?
How could one person possibly
change all of this?
[Miles] Well, first of all,
Jeremy didn't know
as much as he thought.
He was a kid playing
with a rocket launcher.
I mean, he probably
didn't think he'd tap into
something like this.
After all, look
what happened to him.
[Nick] Yeah.
He got his head eaten
by a giant duck.
Y'all remember that?
Goddamn Mr. Beaucroft
eating people's heads.
Yeah, all right, we get it.
Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure you get it.
You probably thought him up.
What-- who? Mr. Beaucroft?
- Hmm.
- What are you even saying?
I'm saying that before
Jeremy left, he said
we had to be very careful
not to mix our dreams with
our memories in our thoughts.
Last time I checked,
you're the only one here
obsessed with horror films.
Wha-- No--
- No-- I didn't mean to.
- [Miles] Look,
- it's not your fault, Ruth.
- No, I think it is.
No, it isn't.
A-- are you responsible for
what you dream of, Nick?
Are you?
No. Instead, it just picks up
something from your day,
a random interaction and memory,
and then off it goes.
It's the subconscious.
We can't control it.
It's-- it's the same here.
We were foolish
to think we could
go back and change things.
It's only gonna make
things worse.
[Paul] What are you saying?
Do we stop now?
Yes, we've already lost.
Eh-- that's the thing, every
time we disconnect from this,
it struggles to put things back.
It messes up, and then
it fills our minds
with memories to adjust.
I mean, I have four
different memories
of how I got here today,
and I don't know which
is the real version.
But I had a life before this.
I had a wife and two sons.
Daughters.
You had two daughters.
[Ruth] Yeah.
She's right, it was two
daughters the first time.
Yeah.
Yeah, two daughters.
I mean, I had
a family. You're saying?
I-- I'm saying we stop
trying to fix things
and simply learn to live
with how they are.
Who's to say we
don't open that door
and there's vampires
flying around.
Yeah? Chaos, mayhem,
a world we don't understand.
With giant ducks
eating people's heads.
Well, obviously that might be
cause for change.
But one thing I'm certain of is
every time we press that buzzer,
something horrible happens.
People have died.
Helen is dead.
But you hated Helen.
I loved Helen.
Miles... Helen didn't exist.
How could you say such a thing?
I'm sorry, I don't accept this.
Things can always be fixed.
This world... these cards
we were given.
I say we keep going.
Keep going 'til we get
everyone back.
'Til we get back to
where we were.
Or at least something
close to it.
Paul, don't you get it,
the mathematics of it all?
We can't even think straight.
I mean, even if we could somehow
recreate that reality,
we wouldn't even know
if we were there.
Yeah, we would.
We've got our profiles.
We have the records of
who we were.
[chuckles] I'm-- I'm sorry, but
we've already tried that.
I mean, thinking that was
the solution is
what got us into this mess.
[stammers] We can't just
imagine something
and then have it appear.
They're like dreams.
We can't control it.
Have you ever tried
to control something
that you've dreamed of
or fantasized about?
More than you know.
You can't do it.
Instead, it just picks up
something random
and snowballs out of control.
That's what this is...
but it's on a
world-threatening scale.
No... no, worse.
It's a scale that threatens
all existence
and reality as we know it.
We shouldn't be fucking with it.
Wait, what if...
What?
[dramatic music]
Nothing, I just...
I can't dream.
- I never have.
- [Ruth] Hold on...
You can't dream?
[Paul] I don't care.
All I know is that
in this world,
my family doesn't exist.
And I can't live in a
reality like that.
So I'm going... whether
you like it or not.
I'm going, too.
I don't know anybody here.
My friends, they--
they're not my friends,
my family.
Even my strongest memories
don't align.
What, am I gonna live here
for living's sake?
- No.
- But it's not just about dying.
It's about being written
out of existence.
The only memories we have of
Jeremy are in our minds.
Kathryn, I mean--
I mean,
what happened to Kathryn?
Oh my God... where's Kathryn?
Who?
You guys didn't even realize.
I mean, that's--
that's what's at stake here.
At least here,
things can be rebuilt.
I mean, families, friends...
...new lives.
So what if I'm erased
from existence?
I can't live here.
I mean, living a life dictated
by something else.
I think we can still fix this.
Your life's always been
dictated.
It's all been a lie.
It-- it always has been.
We just have to accept what
we're given and that's it.
I don't care.
I mean, the little of my life,
like, the little part...
of my life that I do know...
it's just wrong.
I mean, I'm on my phone
looking at pictures of people
that I'm supposed to know...
...but there's something...
eerie and weird
and just creepy about all of it.
I mean, it's like some
AI generated version
of who I am.
[chuckles] And... I just know
that, somewhere out there,
I'm listening to dark rock and
watching horror movies
and I'm not gonna stop
until I find it.
Kelly?
I don't know.
Finally, somebody understands.
Understands?
No, I don't understand anything.
The least bit myself.
I don't know who I am or
who I've ever been.
I-- I had a boyfriend, I think,
but I can't even remember
his face.
And the more we do this...
the more unsure I am.
Who knows if we ever gonna
accept what we're given.
The only difference
is now that...
...we have the power
to change anything...
...but it will be
the most useless
power in the world because...
...we will never accept it.
Exactly.
Kelly, please.
But there is one thing
in this room
that does make any sense,
and that is Paul.
It might be the only thing that
is worth changing reality for.
To get a father back to
his daughters.
Sons.
Daughters.
Oh yeah, that's right.
You idiot.
Maybe it's...
I'm remembering my own father.
And how much that
he meant to me.
Or maybe it's just that I like
the idea of that type of love.
But that's the only thing
that really matters.
More than the rest of us.
I'll do this for Paul.
To bring his family back.
If I can do that, then...
...at least that's something
I'm good for.
I'll be happy I did it.
More so than being living in
this fake reality.
Unbelievable.
Uh-- You would risk your life,
y-- your very existence,
just for that?
I mean, I'm-- I'm not saying
it's not a noble cause,
but come on.
[Paul] We've already
gone too far, Miles.
To give up here
would be pointless.
This is still fixable.
[sighs]
Guess it's that
old human flaw of...
not knowing when to stop or--
or not being able to stop.
Yeah, I guess it is.
What are we waiting for?
[intense music]
I don't know how these
batteries work, but...
...looks like we've got
four buzzes left.
Four chances to put things
back together.
It's fully charged.
- [paper rustling]
- [soft thud]
Ready.
Ready.
Ready.
Last chance.
I'm sorry, Paul, but good luck.
Wait.
What will happen
if you stay here?
Will you be... recreated
in our new reality, or...
I don't know, Ruth.
Just be careful.
The Shroud isn't liking all
these changes.
It's trying to fight back.
That's what happened
to Jeremy and Kathryn.
Be wary of what's on
the other side.
[music building]
All right... on one.
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two.
...one.
[buttons clicking]
[deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[digitalized whoosh]
[buzzing fades]
[suspenseful music]
Nick?
[rhythmic thuds]
Kelly?
Ruth?
[sharp whoosh]
Ruth?
Ruth?
Ruth?
Oh my God.
Paul?
[sharp whoosh]
- What's going on?
- [Paul] I don't know.
When I buzzed...
everyone was gone.
Now, I-- I don't know.
Time's moving differently,
I think.
Nothing makes sense.
And there's--
There's someone
trying to kill us.
Who?
Him.
[music distorts, then increases]
Why is he trying to kill us?
Is he another one of Ruth's
horror movie memories?
I don't know, he might be.
Might be just The Shroud
trying to kill us off.
All right, come on, come on.
- Sometimes--
- [creature growls]
sometimes it moves differently.
Sometimes-- look out!
[distorted whoosh]
[music fades]
[Kelly] What the hell?
[ominous music]
[rewind sound]
[Ruth] Kelly?
Ruth!
Oh my God, I thought
you were dead.
Ruth, Ruth, are-- are you okay?
I just...
saw a duplicate of myself.
I mean, her hair was terrible.
I don't know...
what I'm most shocked by.
Ruth, listen, we need to find
the other ones.
Yeah? We can't stay here.
There is a killer around
trying to wipe us out.
We need to go, yeah?
Sure, I'm just gonna...
go fix my other self's hair.
I'll be back.
[Kelly] Ruth?
[distorted whoosh]
What the hell is happening?
[Nick] It's time.
[music fades]
[panting]
This reality doesn't know
what to do with time.
Nick?
It's messed up.
It's-- no, it's looping,
but uncontrollably.
It's jumping forwards and--
and backwards.
It's like it's having a spasm
or something.
That's it, I mean,
time-- time is spazzing.
It is spazzing out, Kelly.
What are you talking about?
We always have time,
linear time.
No, no, no, no.
Reality dictates time, Kelly.
Reality dictates everything.
There isn't anything that
it doesn't control.
Miles was right.
We screwed this whole thing up.
No, we can't think like that.
It doesn't matter what we think,
Kelly.
Wrong... we thought ourselves
into this mess.
We can think ourselves
out of it.
- Remember what Jeremy said then?
- God, Jer--
Jeremy was the idiot
that got us into this, Kelly.
[suspenseful music]
[panting]
You're not... Nick, are you?
Where are the jokes,
the optimism?
Who are you now?
[softly] I don't know.
[scoffs]
I don't know who I am.
Well, we need to
find the others.
There is a killer
trying to kill us.
- [sighs]
- Okay? I thought he got Ruth.
It did get Ruth.
But I just saw her--
she was fine.
It's probably before,
it's time loops, Kelly.
Guys, get out of here.
It's coming, go!
Oh, damn it.
You're about to loop again.
Usually happens when
your double shows up.
Look, listen, listen. We can't
stay here, we need to get out.
- Yeah, we need to get back to
the chairs and get yourself out.
- [Kelly] That was...
If you get the opportunity,
get yourself out.
- Okay?
- [mumbles, then screams]
[grunts]
[ominous music]
[blade slices and thuds]
[distorted whoosh]
[sighs]
[music quiets]
Guys, get out of here.
It's coming, go!
Shit. You're about--
You're about to loop again.
Usually happens when
your double shows up.
Get yourself out, okay?
[Kelly screams]
[distorted whoosh]
[music increases]
[distorted whoosh]
[Paul] Kelly!
[Kelly sobbing]
[breathing shakily]
Listen, listen.
Oh my God, what have we done?
Look, I know this
looks really bad, but...
You're really not helping.
Loo-- sorry... sorry.
We can fix this.
How?
Look, reality shifted,
that's all.
Things are a little different.
We went too far, Paul.
You saw what was out there.
How the hell are we gonna fix
any of this?
Too many people have died.
We didn't write anything down.
I don't even know
what's real or what's--
what's even possible
in life now.
Look, we still have
three buzzes left.
That's something.
Three chances to make it better.
It's not enough.
Shifting realities...
time spasms...
...augmented pasts.
It's not rocket science.
You're jumping over,
like, ten things.
Look, all we have to do
is figure out one thing.
What's that?
We just have to find out...
...who we are.
It's not gonna work, Paul.
And what's the point?
All of this?
Seeing it all... fall, fail.
All the laws of physics
or time I took for granted.
I mean, it's all fake.
- Kelly, you can't think like--
- And the scariest part of it all
is that in the end...
nothing matters.
Nothing. We all just made it up.
There is no meaning.
There is no purpose.
One plus one... equals five.
Up is down, left is...
a cucumber. It's all...
random, chaotic, pointless.
Why would we want to live
knowing that?
[Paul] You're right.
It's all a lie.
[soft chuckle]
But it's a beautiful lie.
[music turns emotional]
It's a creation of something
that wasn't there.
And because of it,
we have meaning.
Who cares if it isn't real?
We make it real.
Just like my children.
They might not be what
I think they are.
Boys, girls...
That doesn't mean my love
for them isn't real.
What their existence
does for me...
...and everything
I've experienced...
...I wouldn't give up
for anything.
It only means nothing
if you want it to.
But everything we've seen...
...how can we believe anything?
Accept anything?
[scoffs] We just do.
I might just be a-- [chuckles]
a bunch of particles bouncing
off one set or another.
But I believe I'm so much more.
We are so much more.
For Christ's sake,
we changed reality.
We can still fix it.
Otherwise...
[sighs] ...who knows?
We may have just destroyed
everything.
[sniffles]
Please, Kelly.
Please, we have to try.
[deep breath]
I'm sorry.
[groans] I mean...
...let's just get back to
find the buzzers, yeah?
- [sniffles] I-- I think
- [Paul sighs] Yeah.
I might have an idea too
anyway to do...
something about it.
[sighs]
[ominous music]
Paul?
[music increases abruptly]
Go, Kelly!
[blade whooshes]
[wet slashes]
[music turns to action]
[panting]
[distorted whoosh]
[panting]
[music continues]
[distorted whoosh]
[distorted whoosh]
[Miles] When I say one,
you hit the buzzer.
- Five... four...
- Miles? Jeremy?
three... two... one.
- [buttons click]
- [distorted whoosh]
[music continues]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[ominous sting]
- [eerie whoosh]
- [knife slices]
[heavy breathing]
[soft buzzing]
Jeremy.
- [button clicks]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
- [gasps]
- [buzzing fades]
[heavy breathing]
- [groans]
- [gasps]
[ominous music]
That was weird.
What was?
That last one.
[groans]
Last thing I remember,
there was a--
a giant duck, it was...
biting my head.
Really?
That was it?
What? You-- you don't
remember that?
How are you here?
What?
You were dead.
I mean, I saw you die.
What? No, I was just...
Oh... oh, uh...
Oh, you mean that thing
actually did--
Yes.
You were dead.
But you came back.
That last buzz--
you were trying to kill us.
- What? No, I--
I don't remember--
- Stop talking.
If you were dead,
how could you possibly be back?
Technically, explain it to me.
I-- [sighs] I don't know. Er...
If you're thinking what I think
you're thinking of...
...a dead body and a live body
make up the same
amount of particles,
so structurally speaking,
there's no difference.
It doesn't know how to kill us.
What do you mean?
How does that help us?
No, I--
- [chuckles softly]
- [dramatic music]
I think I know how to
fix everything.
Fix everything?
What's there to fix?
[inaudible]
- [door opens]
- No, don't!
Yeah, I guess this is not good.
[Kelly] Jeremy.
I know what to do.
What do you mean?
I brought you back.
I did, myself.
- Look, I'm not sure I even--
- Sit down.
- Alright, so--
- Shut up!
- Hey, don't--
- Shut up!
Shut up! Shut up!
Shut up! Shut up!
- Okay, I--
- Shut up!
Sorry, but I needed to
make that point.
I think it has to be me.
You know, the only one, thinking
when we change realities.
That's how I brought you back.
You did.
Brought me back to where?
Last time I checked, there's
still a void out there.
Just... trust me.
Alright, sure.
But it's not gonna be easy to
just switch off my-- my brain,
my-- my subconscious.
[Kelly] I know, but I think the
problem before was
too many cooks in the kitchen.
All of our minds
aren't lining up.
There has to be
one dominant mind
deciding on what reality
is going to be.
Dominant mind?
And why wouldn't it be mine?
What makes yours so special?
I don't know.
Because... I don't dream, maybe.
And why would that
mean anything?
Look, again, I don't know.
But you have to trust me
on this one.
I can do this, please.
All right.
Hand me the profiles.
[lock clicks]
[paper rustling]
[paper rustling]
We still have two buzzes left
on the charge, right?
[light clicking]
Ah... crap.
I thought we had more.
It's okay.
I'll bring all of us back.
Everyone.
- You sure? I mean, I could--
- No!
Don't even look at the profiles.
Only me, it's important.
Just keep your mind
clear of anything.
[paper rustling]
Once I bring all of
our minds back
with the power of all
of our consciousness,
I'll focus on whatever's
outside those doors.
Hopefully I can bring us to
a reality we all remember.
That makes sense?
Would that work?
Come on, Jeremy.
You said yourself that
more minds make this
thing more effective.
I'm really hoping you know what
you're talking about.
Theoretically, if...
your mind can alone command ours
and do what you think it can do,
then... yeah.
That's the best approach.
- It can work.
- Great.
Phew...
When did you get so smart?
So authoritative?
I don't know. I guess I changed.
Maybe I borrowed parts of
everyone's personality.
Do you have a strange need to
drink all of a sudden?
A little.
It's good to know that
Dean's in there
to balance out
your intelligence.
I should, uh--
I should close this.
- [paper rustling]
- Okay.
Just take this back.
Put it inside the container.
Are you sure that container will
protect all of the profiles?
Yeah, I mean, it has so far,
hasn't it?
[lock clicks]
Trust me, the material this
container is made of
will keep this safe forever.
Now... where do I sit?
Anywhere, it doesn't matter.
- Jeremy,
- [sighs]
- if we get out of this--
- When we get out of this.
When we get out of this,
you're gonna have to give me
as much of that special material
so this can never happen again.
Sure thing, I've got plenty.
Okay, great.
Now, shut up and
don't think of anything.
And if you can't help but think
of something,
then just think about giving all
your brain power
to whatever I'm about to
conjure up.
Ready?
Ready.
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[Paul] Kelly...
Kelly, are you alright?
[music fades]
[sighs] What's different?
What's-- what's
happened this time?
[synth-wave music]
[soft sigh]
I was stabbed in the chest.
Me too.
What?
I don't remember any of that.
I don't think you existed
for the last couple of
realities, Kathryn.
Oh... wait, what?
D-- did it work?
Like, is this... normal?
No... not yet.
We still need...
to do one more buzz.
Right, Kelly?
Can someone explain to me how
I didn't exist for a second?
I think we should just
be happy and
count our lucky stars
that we're back.
I don't think my family's back.
[exhales frustrated]
You and that stupid family.
We just brought ourselves back
from not existing, Paul.
I'm just saying.
I only focused on bringing us
back this time.
I don't know what reality
is out there for us.
Well... why don't we
just go and see?
[all] No!
Don't open that door.
We don't know what is out there.
We don't want to know.
W-- what do you mean, Kelly,
"you brought everybody back?"
How's this possible?
I don't know.
I just thought that one person
concentrating on change
was better than all of us
at the same time.
And it worked.
I don't know why.
Let's not look a gift horse
in the mouth.
Kelly seems to be able to--
to do it and we all
owe her our thanks.
But, you know, we-- we just need
one more buzz
to get us back to--
to where we started.
[sighs] Do we even remember
what that was?
I don't remember anything,
it's-- it's all a mix.
I don't remember
anything either.
But that's nothing new.
Look, I just wanna
get out of here.
Something, anything that
resembles our reality.
I'll take dinosaurs, whatever.
Kelly... I trust you.
One more time and
then we're back.
Ruth?
Hey, I was dead a second ago.
I'm just happy to be talking.
- Okay.
- [Nick] Well?
What do we do? We just...
let Kelly drive the ship?
Pretty much.
Try to think of nothing or...
if you have to think of
something, think about giving
all your mental strength
to Kelly,
whatever that means.
That's what I did and
it seemed to work.
[ethereal music]
Alright.
I'll bring us back.
Everyone ready?
Miles?
[Nick] Miles?
You realize this is
the only way?
Do you understand how lucky we
are that Kelly can even do this?
Don't you trust me, Miles?
Yeah, I guess I do.
More than anybody else here, anyway.
Don't worry, I'll bring us back.
Of course.
Good luck.
Kelly, do you need the files?
No, I've got it this time.
Okay.
Here we go, people, last stop.
- Home.
- Oh...
Jeremy, you're gonna jinx it.
Nick, you're gonna jinx it.
Okay, everyone just shut up.
Clear your minds,
except for you, Kelly.
On one.
[music building]
Five...
...four...
...three...
...two...
...one.
- [buttons click]
- [deep rumble]
[high-pitched buzzing]
[buzzing fades]
[music fades]
[groaning]
Did it work? Are we back?
I don't know, but...
that was our last charge.
Meaning that whatever
Kelly's thought of
is our reality now, uh--
We have to accept it.
[sobbing softly]
[dramatic music]
Thank you.
Yes!
Oh, thank God.
[Ruth] I think it worked.
I mean, my friends,
I recognize them.
Nora, Felipa, Jane.
Same here.
Just as I remember it.
Well, that's good enough for me.
It worked.
You did it, Kelly.
- [all chuckling]
- [Nick] You did it, Kelly!
- Amazing.
- Thank God.
[indistinct chattering]
[Paul] Thanks, Kelly.
You brought my family back.
My daughters.
And my son.
I'm just glad they're all back.
Sorry, I've gotta call them.
- Yes.
- [Dean] Hey!
[chuckles]
Billy's Chicken Mart is back.
[sighs] Well done, Kelly.
[indistinct chatter]
[Nick] Hey, Jeremy...
Don't think we're not still all
incredibly pissed with you.
[rain pouring]
But for now... I'm going home.
Me too.
Look, I-- I apologize.
Jeremy, for once, just shut up.
[Paul] Uh...
Thanks again, Kelly.
Jeremy...
destroy those chairs,
those devices, all of them.
Please.
Don't worry,
I'll make sure he does.
Well, you did it.
You brought us all back.
I don't know how, but...
...I guess you were
the dominant mind after all.
Yeah, something like that.
Listen, Jeremy.
What material did you use
to protect the profiles?
Because I'd read them many times
and they weren't altered.
I'm sure of it.
Do you have more of it?
Well, yeah, I've got heaps, but
it's not what you think it is.
Those steel containers are just
ordinary steel containers.
There's nothing special
about them.
Then how--
You thought they would work...
because I told you
they would work.
And you believed me,
you trusted me.
And then your subconscious mind
did also.
And then when everything else
was changing around us,
they remained untouched.
To be honest, I didn't know
if it would work,
but... there it is.
Interesting.
So, uh, should I burn these or
take them apart?
No.
Just store them away somewhere.
And don't tell anyone but me.
If anyone asks,
you did destroy them.
Sure, whatever you want.
It's your world, after all.

[music continues]
[music continues]
[music fades]
