The Ritual Black Nun (2023) Movie Script
(rain pattering) (thunderstorm rumbling)
(soft music)
(bell ringing)
(dramatic music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
She's at peace now.
I'm not ready for this. It's too soon.
The soul is with God.
He is watching and he
will take you to heaven.
I'm Relying on you.
Dad.
I think we should head back
before the rain gets any worse.
We can come to check on things later.
Please take good care of my AD.
(soft music) (rain pattering)
(suspenseful music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(window cracking)
(suspenseful music) (footsteps thumping)
Come on, dad. Don't be like this.
Edith's at peace now. I really
wish I could have done more.
I really am sorry for everything.
I'm no good at this.
(picture banging) (Sylvie screaming)
What's wrong, Sylvie? Are you sick?
No, I'm, I'm fine dad, oh, I'm sorry.
Are you sure you're okay, Sylvie?
I'm back, honey?
You should go ahead.
Leave this to me, yeah.
(suspenseful music)
(footsteps thumping)
She is fine.
You're very lucky, it
hasn't affected the baby.
This is a normal symptom of pregnancy.
So from today onward,
the task of taking care of you
is up to your husband.
- What does that mean?
- It means
that we're bringing a little miracle
into our family, darling.
I'm really happy.
But in future, let's
be more careful, yeah?
Well, I'll leave this to you.
Come back in four weeks (soft music)
And we will be able to
see if it is a boy or a girl.
Okay, buddy.
(rain pattering)
Guys got some good news for you.
(door slamming)
(walking cane thumping)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
Dad.
Dad. (Walking cane thumping)
Hello?
Hi. Yes.
Who are you looking for?
(suspenseful music)
I really don't know what she's doing.
I just don't understand.
You'll die.
Are you okay?
Yes. It's okay.
Let's get you back to bed.
It's a monster and I don't know why
it's standing outside the window.
What does it want from us? I have no idea.
All I know is this is really, really,
really not gonna end well.
It's a monster. It's a monster.
You have to drive it away.
Never let it in the house.
You have to remember, it is evil.
It's okay, dad. It's just a beggar.
- No, no.
- Don't overthink it.
No, it's a monster. Must chase it away.
Don't ever let it in the house.
Okay.
(rain pattering)
- You are going back?
- Yeah, the hospital called.
There's an emergency patient.
So I have to go right now.
Okay.
What's going on with you?
You don't seem yourself.
(soft music)
Sylvie?
Yeah.
What are you thinking about?
I think you should spend
more time with your father.
Ever since your mom died. He's got worse.
Yeah, I know.
But you know the most
important thing right now
is to take good care of yourself
because it's not just about you anymore.
I know.
I have to go now. I'm
gonna be a bit late, okay?
Yeah. Okay.
(Sylvie sighs)
[Video On Phone] (indistinct) the genie
are something different,
but for many people, the
genie is just some guy in a lamp
who could give you three
wishes, a way for you to get
what you want without
having to work for it.
Not only is that not even close
to the original version
of the (indistinct).
I think you should eat first, okay?
And stop watching those videos.
They'll play with your mind.
Hey, Sylvie's talking to you.
I'm actually not hungry.
I'm just gonna go to bed. I'm tired.
Don't pay attention to him.
I'll go and talk to him in a minute.
Ines, please keep an eye on him.
I know,
but I've gotta go now.
I forgot I have an online
meeting with the group.
Okay.
(soft music)
(lights banging)
Hello, Dane, are you there?
Are you there?
Hello?
(bones cracking)
(dramatic music)
Hello, sir?
Oh, sorry sir.
What's going on with the electric, Dane?
I don't know yet.
Just checking it now.
- Okay. Be quick about it.
I don't want it to affect
the patient's machines.
Yes, sir.
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
(door creaking)
Honey, why are you
out of work so early today?
I've come to take you for your checkout.
And we'll see if we have little prince
or little princess on the way.
Kid, I need you to look
after grandpa until Ines gets home, okay?
I know, dad. No worries.
Okay, let's go.
Oh, yeah.
(distant TV chattering)
(TV banging) (dramatic music)
Ah, I noticed there being
something up with you for a while.
What's the matter?
I don't know.
I feel like something strange.
But what that's it.
That just someone coming after him,
or are you still thinking about mom?
No, it's not about Gabriel.
I know losing Edie, even I
can't get my head around it.
So how can he?
Okay. Anyway, just let yourself be happy.
Don't dwell on it.
It's not just you anymore, okay?
(suspenseful music)
Stay in the car. Lock the door.
I'll try to ask somebody.
Maybe some local ceremony.
Okay.
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music continues)
(suspenseful music)
You, don't think you
can harm our children.
Go get out of here now.
You, you
stop coming to me.
I'm not afraid of you.
Even if I have to die,
I will never ever allow
you to hire my children.
Get out. Get out right away.
(dramatic music)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
Hey, what ceremony is this?
Hey, what are you doing?
If you don't answer me, I'm
reporting this to the police.
(suspenseful music) (water babbling)
(door opening)
(door slamming)
So how were they?
They're mm, I saw them.
- But what?
- But it's okay.
Really, it's a waste of time.
I'm sorry for keeping you waiting.
It's okay.
As you wish.
Finally, we've got our own little princess.
Congratulations, doctor.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(footsteps thumping)
(water babbling)
Wait a minute. I'll make you some food.
Ah, you can make it for dad and Martin,
but I need to hurry back to the hospital
and catch up on some work.
Spend too much on the
morning chasing shadows.
- Okay.
- I have to go now.
Good luck.
(door slamming) (soft music)
(jolly music)
(singing in foreign language)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
Mom, I'm back.
(walking cane banging)
Get out. Get out.
You guys. Get out now.
Gabriel, what are you doing?
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(door creaking) (suspenseful music)
Dad I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier.
I was just surprised. I know
you didn't mean anything by it.
Please don't be upset with me.
Get out. You must all leave my house,
otherwise you will all die.
Dad, are you hungry yet?
I have to go now, but if you
need anything, please tell me.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door knocking)
(plate crashing)
Gabriel, this is too much.
Should I call Nathan to
take you to the hospital?
(gentle music)
(crickets chirping)
You have to believe
me. All this is a ghost.
It's not Grandpa.
Have you been watching
those videos again?
Have you finally gone mad?
It's true. I stay home
a lot with grandpa.
He used tell me all about them.
Why don't you believe me?
Because you sound crazy.
You don't even know how many times they had
to change your school
because of your stupid stories.
(dramatic music)
(plate rattling)
Hey, when are you going
to stop acting like this?
(door knocking)
I'm gonna tell dad.
Grandpa is our only patient here at home.
God, you're stupid.
(dramatic music)
(Ines speaking foreign language)
Oh.
(Ines speaking foreign language)
Grandpa, someone's looking for you.
(dramatic music)
(door creaking)
(dramatic music)
Grandpa's guests are so strange.
Are you still worried about
dad? Are you still mad at him?
No.
I'm sorry.
This afternoon I was really angry with him.
And then now that I think about it,
I'm really worried about him.
I think you better take him
to hospital for a checkup.
I know, when I arrived home,
I tried to knock on the
door so I could talk to him.
He just kicked me outta the room.
Hmm. Wouldn't even let me in.
The person that kicked
dad out wasn't our grandpa.
It's cheating. It's a monster.
It's trying to trick you.
Martin, you need to listen to me.
You need to stop thinking like this.
Stop saying these weird things, okay?
Mom.
It's true because Grandpa told me that.
I think it's time to get you back to bed.
Sound good? Come on.
- Sad.
- Let's go.
(gentle music)
Dad. You should listen to Grandpa.
He wants us to leave here.
Son, listen to me. This is our home now.
Where would we go?
We're living in Cambodia,
not in France, okay?
Dad.
Listen, kiddo,
just close your eyes, get some sleep.
Everything will be okay in the morning.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(dramatic music)
Mom, mom,
mom, dad.
Oh no.
(suspenseful music)
We were done here.
We asked to keep the
body for a day for autopsy.
If there's nothing, you can
arrange a funeral for him.
It's our obligation and legal procedure
with all foreigners.
- Yes, sir. We'll cooperate.
- Thank you. We'll be off now.
I am sorry. I could have done more.
I should have taken better care of him.
This is all my fault.
No, it's not.
Look, it's okay.
Dad is at peace now.
And he'll be with mom.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
My daughter, you must be strong.
Build faith, keep good deeds in your heart,
and please don't be weak.
- Thank you, father.
- [Phone] Hello.
I'd like to invite you
to the police station.
We'd like to ask you some questions
about your father's death.
Sure. We'll go now.
I think we need to go now, Father.
The police have asked
us to go to the station.
They have some questions about my dad.
Sure, I understand.
Oh, just a minute.
Take this book with you
in case it can help you.
Thank you, father.
(gentle music)
The results clearly show,
at the scanning, we saw
the iron bar in his throat.
We request surgery to remove it.
How can it be?
At this point, we don't have any answers.
According to the results of
the investigation at your house
and examining the vote of
the deceased, there's no scare.
There's nothing to
indicate coercion or murder.
So how do you explain this?
The next step will be to remove the item
and take a closer look.
We'll have more
information for you after that.
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(door knocking)
Who is it?
(door knocking)
(door creaking)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(dramatic music)
Sylvie.
Dad?
Yes, it's me.
But you.
I've come to ask you to stay here.
Why are you taking
me to the police station?
(dramatic music)
Nathan?
(Sylvie screams)
I'm fine.
I mean, it stopped hurting now.
I mean, there's nothing to worry about.
I know, but let's just
see for ourselves, okay?
Nathan, what is it?
It's good, but it's not as easy
as we thought it was going to be.
- What does that mean?
- We've got a twin.
I don't understand that.
Are you sure?
It's true.
It's another child.
We have another daughter.
- But last time...
I'm really happy.
Maybe last time there was a
problem with the ecosystem,
but this time it's not wrong, love.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(door knocking)
Martin open the door.
(door knocking)
Mom dad are home.
Martin?
(door opening)
Ines, are they back?
No. It's no one.
I heard a knock on the door earlier.
Maybe they went to the wrong house.
(door slamming)
(dramatic music)
What is that?
Why does it smell so bad?
I swear it wasn't there before.
Many religious people
around the world are still
being debated and have not
yet had a definitive
interpretation accepted by all.
But today, around the world,
we present a strange belief
feared by many religious people.
The practice of this, so-called belief,
can be found in the
rural areas of Cambodia,
Thailand, and Myanmar.
Here it is, thought
that these practitioners
perform magic spells.
They can make you get dizzy or die.
Where it is thought
that these practitioners
perform magical spells
and objects such as thread,
nails, lead, or other household items.
They can kill people they want
to kill without being present.
It's supposed that these spells
call upon a demon will then
affect their intended victims.
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving) (birds chirping)
Ines?
Martin?
Kids?
I think you should admit
that this mud is caused by you.
Grandpa was alive, you always blamed him.
But we still have mud in the house,
which really means it was you.
I said, it's not me.
I'm really fed up with you.
Don't talk to your sister like that.
Can you stop them? They
don't listen to me anymore.
You think that I did that? This is crazy.
I can't believe you think
everything is my fault.
(gentle music)
You don't feel good?
I don't think Martin's lying.
I looked at his eyes. I trust him.
He believes what he's saying.
I don't know what's going on here,
but it only happens once in a while.
So let's just forget about it.
It happens every day,
especially this week,
from the door, stairs,
to the front of Gabriel's room.
Oh, and that mud smells foul.
That's why Ines is so upset.
Every day?
The one week I'm not at home?
Yeah.
Well, don't be upset.
I've got a solution.
I think we should
temporarily lock this room.
Don't let the kids play inside.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door creaking)
(door creaking)
(door slamming)
(leaves rustling)
(door creaking)
(door slamming)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(wind howling)
(monitor beeping)
I think there's two possibilities.
First, your son may have tuberculosis.
Second, he's just a playful kid.
(speaking in foreign language)
(dramatic music)
Martin, are you okay? Still in any pain?
Martin? Dad's speaking to you.
Next time, if you're
not gonna believe me,
don't bother asking me.
(dramatic music)
(Martin gasping)
You'll die.
No, no, no, no.
What's wrong? Martin stop it.
(tires screeching)
[Martin] No, no.
Martin, you okay?
(car engine revving)
(lively music)
Oh, hey.
When was the last time you had a drink?
You just like your dad
obsessed with all these old things.
You just can't let it go.
- You're right.
- Seriously.
I mean, your house is so full.
Where are you gonna
put all this kind of stuff?
You and your father.
When is it gonna be enough?
Look, it's my hobby and dad's,
it's got nothing to do with you.
Anyway, how's that thing
I ask you to help with?
Here.
This is what you want.
Yeah, that's right.
Okay, I've gotta go now.
Hey, what? You are leaving now?
Yeah. She got what she wanted.
Why does she need to stay any longer?
No, Martin is out of the hospital
and I came out for a bit, didn't I?
Okay. Take you time.
Wow. Why is she acting so weird?
I dunno.
But they might be home by now.
Sorry, I have to go.
What did she ask you to find?
Some ancient religious book.
Maybe she wants to be a fortune teller.
No, that's impossible.
That's strange. Let's Cheers.
- Cheers.
- Yeah, cheers.
(door creaking)
Ines, where have you come from?
Just the night market. I had
to get a book from my friend.
Okay, well, let's have dinner together.
No, you guys have a good
dinner. I've got work to do.
What about Martin?
He's not hungry.
He had some milk and went to bed.
And then there were two.
God, Sylvie. It shouldn't
be like this yet, should it?
I know you're upset, but you
should have seen this coming.
What do you mean?
You need to spend more time with Martin.
You know he looks up to you.
He just wants to make you proud of him.
Okay, fine.
I'll talk to him after dinner.
Yeah, thank you.
No problem.
(door creaking)
Mom?
Sylvie?
(wind howling)
(spray hissing)
(door slamming)
I know you're not sleeping.
I'm sorry if I upset you.
You don't believe me.
If you loved me, you'd believe me.
Okay, so tell me.
I'll listen.
Really, dad?
Ah.
Hmm. Of course.
(suspenseful music)
(dramatic music)
Grandpa told me. It's this
woman who used to work for him.
One night he was drinking
and he tried to do
something really bad to her.
She was pregnant, but grandpa
had not done anything yet.
But she had a heart attack and died.
Grandpa said it was years
before we came to Cambodia
and he didn't want you to know about it.
So he gave her family
money to not tell anyone.
(Ines gasping) (water splashing)
And what else did grandpa say?
Grandpa didn't tell me anymore
because the woman's ghost
kept on coming to hurt him.
Grandpa said we should be
careful of her ghost's husband.
He was a soldier and he knows black magic.
Mom help me.
Ines.
Dad.
There was someone pushing
my head into the water.
- What are you doing?
- And the tub
it's full of eels.
Dad, if you don't believe me, just look.
The room is full of insects, look.
Dad, Ugh.
Fine. Forget about the garbage.
At least look in the tub.
Look, it's full of eels. I swear.
We are guess in Cambodia.
This is not like back in France.
I expected better from you.
There's a lot of history in this country
and so much to learn.
Look at (indistinct) and all
the incredible architecture.
These are your ancestors too, Ines.
Fill your head with important things,
not this superstitious trash.
Even your mother didn't use
to bother with stuff like this.
(gentle music)
Mom.
Sylvie.
(dramatic music)
[TV] I wanna start
with this incredible piece
that tells the whole story, as you said,
from these brand new
memoirs that have come out,
that each have a little piece.
Dad, I'm sorry Dad,
don't be angry with me.
I don't wanna talk about this
anymore. I've said my peace.
Don't you think you should
be taking this more seriously?
Sylvie gives birth in two weeks.
It's about time you start
doing more to help her.
But Dad.
I know, Dad.
I'm tired.
I'm off to bed.
Mom. Seriously?
I'm not crazy. Look at this.
Okay, I mean,
this could just be an allergy.
But honestly, I..
Okay, I'm going to bed now.
(door slamming)
Maybe Martin was right. (Suspenseful music)
(person thumping)
You beat my wife to death.
My unborn child also died.
Your children must pay us back.
(dramatic music)
(birds howling)
(Sylvie sobbing)
It hurts.
(door slamming)
I am depending on you.
I just can't bear the see her like this.
I just, I can't treat her myself.
Don't worry. Sylvie's
heart rate isn't too risky.
Just try to calm down. Okay?
Wait for your children to arrive.
Okay. I trust you.
(footsteps thumping)
Nathan, come in.
We need to make a decision fast
if we're gonna save Sylvie.
How is this even possible?
We went to scan every month.
Every month the babies are healthy.
They were fine.
They can't just vanish.
However, Nathan, just accept the truth.
Don't let Sylvie know this.
We have to save Sylvie.
We don't have much time.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(car engine revving)
(door slamming)
(footsteps thumping)
(door slamming)
(Sylvie sobbing)
Hello? Can I help you?
Who are you looking for?
(Nathan gasping) (window shattering)
(dramatic music)
(door slamming)
(rain pattering)
(footsteps thumping)
I am full.
Dad, are you eating now?
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(rain pattering)
(water dripping)
Hi, who are you?
Who are you looking for?
(dramatic music)
(door clacking)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
Come on. Don't be so hard on yourself.
You still need to recover.
You taking your medicine?
(Sylvie speaking in tongues)
(Nathan gasping)
Huh?
(ghost creaking)
(Nathan gasping)
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door knocking)
Ines, it's me. Can I come in for a bit?
Dad.
Dad?
At first, I didn't believe it either,
but so much stuff has happened.
I believe it. You've seen it too.
Listen to me.
Everybody just needs to
keep their head straight.
Dad, I don't wanna argue
with you. I know you're a doctor.
You don't believe in superstitions,
but everything our family has been through,
it really happened.
It isn't too late, dad.
You're always a hero of this family.
I know you can handle it.
She's right, Nathan.
You can't pretend not to believe it.
(birds chirping)
I've done some research
about the problems
that are happening with your family
and it's beyond my comprehension.
We can't find a way looking at this book.
I don't understand. I
mean, what do you mean?
I found this. It comes
from a very religious book.
You must see it.
I dunno if Gabriel had
a problem with anyone,
but if you wanna know more about this,
start with the graves of
your mother and Gabriel.
(suspenseful music)
(digging bar thudding)
(casket creaking) (Sylvie gasping)
(dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving)
Are you still upset about Gabriel's body?
Listen, I apologize
for not letting you return
the body of your father.
I read the book.
If the corpse is buried before
we get the materials we need
to suppress the ceremony,
we can't touch the body.
The problem will get worse.
Well, look, let's just get to this place
and find a solution to all of this.
According to my sources,
there's a Hindu priest
and a Buddhist monk in the Kulen area.
They are the only ones
who can break the curse.
There's only one person
who could have done this.
Well, for now, let's just be careful.
Yeah.
(suspenseful music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(car engine revving)
(car engine revving)
(birds chirping)
(doors slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(footsteps thumping)
(dramatic music)
(cow mooing)
What? Hey.
(footsteps thumping)
Thus again.
Hey, is this the (indistinct)?
(cow mooing)
(dramatic music)
Whoa, whoa. Okay. Okay.
Wait, Nathan, get off me.
What are you doing?
Nathan.
Nathan.
(distant chattering)
(traditional music)
Help, help me someone please.
You guys are insane.
Help me, (sobbing) someone.
Help me, please help me.
Help me.
(Sylvie screaming) (axe thudding)
(suspenseful music)
(cow mooing)
(gentle music)
This is for you.
(cow mooing)
This is not surprising.
What you just saw was a belief.
It's called the master
offering, or simply offer.
The villages saw this girl without a head,
but according to the belief,
the monster was clinging to her head.
If the ceremony were
not performed correctly,
this would have come to pass.
So you behead us and we give you money?
Sorry.
You don't understand.
It isn't a joke. You could have died.
Said Sylvie is followed by
demon. Do you know why?
I'm not a God.
What I know is limited
and because my villagers don't sin,
don't kill animals, don't destroy nature,
their eyes are brighter
than outsiders like you.
We are ugly, but our hearts are pure.
I'm sorry, but can I ask a question?
We came here looking for help
because my family have so many problems
that we, we just can't explain.
It's, it's very difficult to understand.
What is it that makes you so scared?
We believe that someone
may have performed
some kind of ritual on
my husband's parents.
We found their bodies desecrated.
They were buried upside down.
Do people really still
know how to do this magic?
You know about this?
Please, if you know
anything, you must tell us.
This is the inversion
of the great rebellion.
It was later called the
reversing of the planet
or the overturned ghost.
The corpse that are taken
to this ceremony are forced
to wonder from innocent to
fierce, from friends to enemies.
What is more dangerous?
They always return to
where they used to live,
like the children and
location that he remembers.
I read about it in his book
about the burial of the dead.
It was recorded that the ground
of a funeral pyre can prevent
evil spirits from getting close.
But this work is it for the demon too.
Of course, the pyre is
the holy door for the spirit.
But a demon, a demon is different.
Please tell us what to do.
Right now our kids are at home alone.
How many months has it been since
the body was taken to the mortuary?
Seven. Seven months.
And how many days?
Maybe day four.
Fate is real.
What does that mean?
The dead body counts the days
of the ceremony for seven months
and then after, seven days,
the spirit will become a demon.
- Is that true?
- The land can't be protected
for a long time.
We have another sacred
object to defeat the monster.
Like what? We'll do anything.
Prayer Bakan.
What is Prayer Bakan?
Prayer Bakan is a place
of worship in Pursat province
with a Buddhist statue facing west.
I don't understand.
Khmer archeology has
a sacred culture beyond
what most people know.
Temple reach ceremony was
held for great religious offerings
for the defense of the country.
This is why the Buddhist
statue was erected facing west.
There are the temples of (indistinct)
And Prayer Bakan at what
Bakan Pursat province.
So what should we do?
In desperation, Bakan,
the first sun stone pillar to be used
to suppress the ceremony
was destroyed by pul pot.
And if the statue had remained,
only water washed away from
its feet would have been able
to suppress the ceremony.
Maybe this is all predestined fate.
Is this, is this really a dead end?
I think you should go there.
But Camp Pagoda, Pursat province.
The big statue was destroyed,
but I believe that the
smartest statues made from it
hold the same properties.
But you guys have to escape tonight.
- What do you mean?
- I feel like dangerous things
are coming after you tonight.
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving)
(knife thudding) (dramatic music)
(mannequin thudding)
Forgiveness should
be exempt from restraint.
I don't hurt women.
If you want to be happy in the future,
don't get involved in
other people's stories
unless you want to die.
(dramatic music)
(gentle music)
You know, I'm really
worried about the children.
We should go home soon.
She said we need an artifact.
She sounded pretty serious.
Look, if we believe her, then
we have three more days.
However, we will return
before the day she told us.
How is any of this happening?
We'll get through this. Trust me.
(gentle music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(suspenseful music)
(rain pattering) (swing creaking)
Ines, Ines.
Hmm? What's up?
Do you hear that music?
Oh, go to bed. You're imagining things.
- Ines, listen.
- Stop it.
I'm trying to sleep.
(swing creaking) (rain pattering)
(dramatic music) (swing creaking)
(dramatic music)
(dramatic music)
(dramatic music) (Martin breathing heavily)
(dramatic music)
Why are you sitting here all alone?
You like these old programs, do you?
How about some food, you hungry?
Ines, I have a game
I want to play with you.
What game?
(dramatic music)
Martin.
Martin.
What is this?
Where you taking me?
Answer me.
What are you doing?
Let me go.
(light shattering)
(dramatic music)
(car engine revving)
(lights shattering)
(doors slamming)
(house exploding)
(footsteps thumping)
(dramatic music)
(ghost howling)
(Sylvie groaning)
Oh my, my stomach.
Oh.
What do we do now?
There's nothing we can
do right now except pray
that everything is gonna be okay.
We must remain strong.
(Sylvie groaning)
(door creaking)
Did you guys get anything
related to the body of Bakan?
Do you understand?
Yes, I understand.
Here, but I dunno if it's pure or not.
(Sylvie screaming)
What the heck is going on?
What is happening to her belly?
Because of this, my
mother was very concerned.
She listened to all of you.
She believed that a monster
would be born in her womb.
We can't let them make the ceremony.
That's why she sent me here.
She also held a ceremony to assist me.
Ceremony?
They would try to take her.
They want the abstract
spirit growing inside of her.
- That's insane.
- You're right.
Even more crazy if the
ceremony is to be done,
they'll need to operate
on her abdomen awake
so that this invisible spirit can be born.
I used to read about this in
books, but I never expected
people still use such
ancient magic rituals.
God, - If this ceremony
is successful,
this abstract spirit will give
birth to unspeakable horrors.
So what do we do?
(suspenseful music)
(floor knocking)
Wait.
Here.
I think there is something under.
(floor thudding)
I never knew this house had a basement.
I will go down below and
try my best to suppress them.
You guys must protect her at all costs.
(dramatic music)
I will go with you.
(water dripping)
(footsteps thumping)
(door creaking)
(dramatic music)
Oh, Nathan, my stomach
is, is starting again.
I can feel it.
(gentle music)
(dramatic music)
- Dad.
- Martin, where have you been?
Mom?
Oh god. Oh, my (indistinct) are fine.
You're so worried about (indistinct).
We're so relieved to see you're okay
Mom.
Are you hurt?
Dad?
I'll help mom get rid of her stomach ache.
She'll no longer have any pain.
(Nathan screaming) (Nathan thudding)
(Sylvie gasping)
(distant chattering)
(door creaking)
(footsteps thumping)
Help.
What? What are you doing?
What is this?
Someone...
(wind howling)
This hell will end here.
(gun firing)
(dramatic music) (water splashing)
(gun firing) (dramatic music)
Just get outta here.
You can't help anything.
I'll find a way to help
you, promise I'll be back.
(dramatic music)
(reciting indistinctly)
(fists thudding)
(water dripping)
Kids like you do not deserve
this one-legged weight magic.
(dramatic music)
(water splashing)
(wind howling)
(grunting) (water splashing)
(knife thudding)
(wind howling)
(water bubbling)
(Sylvie grunting)
(indistinct chattering)
(dramatic music)
(knife thudding)
That little statue was
just a small part of Bakan's body,
but this knife is made from his core.
You are evil.
(knife thudding)
(Sylvie screaming)
(ghost screaming)
(gentle music)
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(car engine revving)
(dramatic music)
(bird cawing)
(Martin gasping)
Help please, help.
Help me, help.
Help me.
(gentle music)
(soft music)
(bell ringing)
(dramatic music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
She's at peace now.
I'm not ready for this. It's too soon.
The soul is with God.
He is watching and he
will take you to heaven.
I'm Relying on you.
Dad.
I think we should head back
before the rain gets any worse.
We can come to check on things later.
Please take good care of my AD.
(soft music) (rain pattering)
(suspenseful music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(window cracking)
(suspenseful music) (footsteps thumping)
Come on, dad. Don't be like this.
Edith's at peace now. I really
wish I could have done more.
I really am sorry for everything.
I'm no good at this.
(picture banging) (Sylvie screaming)
What's wrong, Sylvie? Are you sick?
No, I'm, I'm fine dad, oh, I'm sorry.
Are you sure you're okay, Sylvie?
I'm back, honey?
You should go ahead.
Leave this to me, yeah.
(suspenseful music)
(footsteps thumping)
She is fine.
You're very lucky, it
hasn't affected the baby.
This is a normal symptom of pregnancy.
So from today onward,
the task of taking care of you
is up to your husband.
- What does that mean?
- It means
that we're bringing a little miracle
into our family, darling.
I'm really happy.
But in future, let's
be more careful, yeah?
Well, I'll leave this to you.
Come back in four weeks (soft music)
And we will be able to
see if it is a boy or a girl.
Okay, buddy.
(rain pattering)
Guys got some good news for you.
(door slamming)
(walking cane thumping)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
Dad.
Dad. (Walking cane thumping)
Hello?
Hi. Yes.
Who are you looking for?
(suspenseful music)
I really don't know what she's doing.
I just don't understand.
You'll die.
Are you okay?
Yes. It's okay.
Let's get you back to bed.
It's a monster and I don't know why
it's standing outside the window.
What does it want from us? I have no idea.
All I know is this is really, really,
really not gonna end well.
It's a monster. It's a monster.
You have to drive it away.
Never let it in the house.
You have to remember, it is evil.
It's okay, dad. It's just a beggar.
- No, no.
- Don't overthink it.
No, it's a monster. Must chase it away.
Don't ever let it in the house.
Okay.
(rain pattering)
- You are going back?
- Yeah, the hospital called.
There's an emergency patient.
So I have to go right now.
Okay.
What's going on with you?
You don't seem yourself.
(soft music)
Sylvie?
Yeah.
What are you thinking about?
I think you should spend
more time with your father.
Ever since your mom died. He's got worse.
Yeah, I know.
But you know the most
important thing right now
is to take good care of yourself
because it's not just about you anymore.
I know.
I have to go now. I'm
gonna be a bit late, okay?
Yeah. Okay.
(Sylvie sighs)
[Video On Phone] (indistinct) the genie
are something different,
but for many people, the
genie is just some guy in a lamp
who could give you three
wishes, a way for you to get
what you want without
having to work for it.
Not only is that not even close
to the original version
of the (indistinct).
I think you should eat first, okay?
And stop watching those videos.
They'll play with your mind.
Hey, Sylvie's talking to you.
I'm actually not hungry.
I'm just gonna go to bed. I'm tired.
Don't pay attention to him.
I'll go and talk to him in a minute.
Ines, please keep an eye on him.
I know,
but I've gotta go now.
I forgot I have an online
meeting with the group.
Okay.
(soft music)
(lights banging)
Hello, Dane, are you there?
Are you there?
Hello?
(bones cracking)
(dramatic music)
Hello, sir?
Oh, sorry sir.
What's going on with the electric, Dane?
I don't know yet.
Just checking it now.
- Okay. Be quick about it.
I don't want it to affect
the patient's machines.
Yes, sir.
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
(door creaking)
Honey, why are you
out of work so early today?
I've come to take you for your checkout.
And we'll see if we have little prince
or little princess on the way.
Kid, I need you to look
after grandpa until Ines gets home, okay?
I know, dad. No worries.
Okay, let's go.
Oh, yeah.
(distant TV chattering)
(TV banging) (dramatic music)
Ah, I noticed there being
something up with you for a while.
What's the matter?
I don't know.
I feel like something strange.
But what that's it.
That just someone coming after him,
or are you still thinking about mom?
No, it's not about Gabriel.
I know losing Edie, even I
can't get my head around it.
So how can he?
Okay. Anyway, just let yourself be happy.
Don't dwell on it.
It's not just you anymore, okay?
(suspenseful music)
Stay in the car. Lock the door.
I'll try to ask somebody.
Maybe some local ceremony.
Okay.
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music continues)
(suspenseful music)
You, don't think you
can harm our children.
Go get out of here now.
You, you
stop coming to me.
I'm not afraid of you.
Even if I have to die,
I will never ever allow
you to hire my children.
Get out. Get out right away.
(dramatic music)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
Hey, what ceremony is this?
Hey, what are you doing?
If you don't answer me, I'm
reporting this to the police.
(suspenseful music) (water babbling)
(door opening)
(door slamming)
So how were they?
They're mm, I saw them.
- But what?
- But it's okay.
Really, it's a waste of time.
I'm sorry for keeping you waiting.
It's okay.
As you wish.
Finally, we've got our own little princess.
Congratulations, doctor.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(footsteps thumping)
(water babbling)
Wait a minute. I'll make you some food.
Ah, you can make it for dad and Martin,
but I need to hurry back to the hospital
and catch up on some work.
Spend too much on the
morning chasing shadows.
- Okay.
- I have to go now.
Good luck.
(door slamming) (soft music)
(jolly music)
(singing in foreign language)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
Mom, I'm back.
(walking cane banging)
Get out. Get out.
You guys. Get out now.
Gabriel, what are you doing?
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(door creaking) (suspenseful music)
Dad I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier.
I was just surprised. I know
you didn't mean anything by it.
Please don't be upset with me.
Get out. You must all leave my house,
otherwise you will all die.
Dad, are you hungry yet?
I have to go now, but if you
need anything, please tell me.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door knocking)
(plate crashing)
Gabriel, this is too much.
Should I call Nathan to
take you to the hospital?
(gentle music)
(crickets chirping)
You have to believe
me. All this is a ghost.
It's not Grandpa.
Have you been watching
those videos again?
Have you finally gone mad?
It's true. I stay home
a lot with grandpa.
He used tell me all about them.
Why don't you believe me?
Because you sound crazy.
You don't even know how many times they had
to change your school
because of your stupid stories.
(dramatic music)
(plate rattling)
Hey, when are you going
to stop acting like this?
(door knocking)
I'm gonna tell dad.
Grandpa is our only patient here at home.
God, you're stupid.
(dramatic music)
(Ines speaking foreign language)
Oh.
(Ines speaking foreign language)
Grandpa, someone's looking for you.
(dramatic music)
(door creaking)
(dramatic music)
Grandpa's guests are so strange.
Are you still worried about
dad? Are you still mad at him?
No.
I'm sorry.
This afternoon I was really angry with him.
And then now that I think about it,
I'm really worried about him.
I think you better take him
to hospital for a checkup.
I know, when I arrived home,
I tried to knock on the
door so I could talk to him.
He just kicked me outta the room.
Hmm. Wouldn't even let me in.
The person that kicked
dad out wasn't our grandpa.
It's cheating. It's a monster.
It's trying to trick you.
Martin, you need to listen to me.
You need to stop thinking like this.
Stop saying these weird things, okay?
Mom.
It's true because Grandpa told me that.
I think it's time to get you back to bed.
Sound good? Come on.
- Sad.
- Let's go.
(gentle music)
Dad. You should listen to Grandpa.
He wants us to leave here.
Son, listen to me. This is our home now.
Where would we go?
We're living in Cambodia,
not in France, okay?
Dad.
Listen, kiddo,
just close your eyes, get some sleep.
Everything will be okay in the morning.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(dramatic music)
Mom, mom,
mom, dad.
Oh no.
(suspenseful music)
We were done here.
We asked to keep the
body for a day for autopsy.
If there's nothing, you can
arrange a funeral for him.
It's our obligation and legal procedure
with all foreigners.
- Yes, sir. We'll cooperate.
- Thank you. We'll be off now.
I am sorry. I could have done more.
I should have taken better care of him.
This is all my fault.
No, it's not.
Look, it's okay.
Dad is at peace now.
And he'll be with mom.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
My daughter, you must be strong.
Build faith, keep good deeds in your heart,
and please don't be weak.
- Thank you, father.
- [Phone] Hello.
I'd like to invite you
to the police station.
We'd like to ask you some questions
about your father's death.
Sure. We'll go now.
I think we need to go now, Father.
The police have asked
us to go to the station.
They have some questions about my dad.
Sure, I understand.
Oh, just a minute.
Take this book with you
in case it can help you.
Thank you, father.
(gentle music)
The results clearly show,
at the scanning, we saw
the iron bar in his throat.
We request surgery to remove it.
How can it be?
At this point, we don't have any answers.
According to the results of
the investigation at your house
and examining the vote of
the deceased, there's no scare.
There's nothing to
indicate coercion or murder.
So how do you explain this?
The next step will be to remove the item
and take a closer look.
We'll have more
information for you after that.
(suspenseful music)
(birds chirping)
(door knocking)
Who is it?
(door knocking)
(door creaking)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(dramatic music)
Sylvie.
Dad?
Yes, it's me.
But you.
I've come to ask you to stay here.
Why are you taking
me to the police station?
(dramatic music)
Nathan?
(Sylvie screams)
I'm fine.
I mean, it stopped hurting now.
I mean, there's nothing to worry about.
I know, but let's just
see for ourselves, okay?
Nathan, what is it?
It's good, but it's not as easy
as we thought it was going to be.
- What does that mean?
- We've got a twin.
I don't understand that.
Are you sure?
It's true.
It's another child.
We have another daughter.
- But last time...
I'm really happy.
Maybe last time there was a
problem with the ecosystem,
but this time it's not wrong, love.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(door knocking)
Martin open the door.
(door knocking)
Mom dad are home.
Martin?
(door opening)
Ines, are they back?
No. It's no one.
I heard a knock on the door earlier.
Maybe they went to the wrong house.
(door slamming)
(dramatic music)
What is that?
Why does it smell so bad?
I swear it wasn't there before.
Many religious people
around the world are still
being debated and have not
yet had a definitive
interpretation accepted by all.
But today, around the world,
we present a strange belief
feared by many religious people.
The practice of this, so-called belief,
can be found in the
rural areas of Cambodia,
Thailand, and Myanmar.
Here it is, thought
that these practitioners
perform magic spells.
They can make you get dizzy or die.
Where it is thought
that these practitioners
perform magical spells
and objects such as thread,
nails, lead, or other household items.
They can kill people they want
to kill without being present.
It's supposed that these spells
call upon a demon will then
affect their intended victims.
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving) (birds chirping)
Ines?
Martin?
Kids?
I think you should admit
that this mud is caused by you.
Grandpa was alive, you always blamed him.
But we still have mud in the house,
which really means it was you.
I said, it's not me.
I'm really fed up with you.
Don't talk to your sister like that.
Can you stop them? They
don't listen to me anymore.
You think that I did that? This is crazy.
I can't believe you think
everything is my fault.
(gentle music)
You don't feel good?
I don't think Martin's lying.
I looked at his eyes. I trust him.
He believes what he's saying.
I don't know what's going on here,
but it only happens once in a while.
So let's just forget about it.
It happens every day,
especially this week,
from the door, stairs,
to the front of Gabriel's room.
Oh, and that mud smells foul.
That's why Ines is so upset.
Every day?
The one week I'm not at home?
Yeah.
Well, don't be upset.
I've got a solution.
I think we should
temporarily lock this room.
Don't let the kids play inside.
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door creaking)
(door creaking)
(door slamming)
(leaves rustling)
(door creaking)
(door slamming)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(wind howling)
(monitor beeping)
I think there's two possibilities.
First, your son may have tuberculosis.
Second, he's just a playful kid.
(speaking in foreign language)
(dramatic music)
Martin, are you okay? Still in any pain?
Martin? Dad's speaking to you.
Next time, if you're
not gonna believe me,
don't bother asking me.
(dramatic music)
(Martin gasping)
You'll die.
No, no, no, no.
What's wrong? Martin stop it.
(tires screeching)
[Martin] No, no.
Martin, you okay?
(car engine revving)
(lively music)
Oh, hey.
When was the last time you had a drink?
You just like your dad
obsessed with all these old things.
You just can't let it go.
- You're right.
- Seriously.
I mean, your house is so full.
Where are you gonna
put all this kind of stuff?
You and your father.
When is it gonna be enough?
Look, it's my hobby and dad's,
it's got nothing to do with you.
Anyway, how's that thing
I ask you to help with?
Here.
This is what you want.
Yeah, that's right.
Okay, I've gotta go now.
Hey, what? You are leaving now?
Yeah. She got what she wanted.
Why does she need to stay any longer?
No, Martin is out of the hospital
and I came out for a bit, didn't I?
Okay. Take you time.
Wow. Why is she acting so weird?
I dunno.
But they might be home by now.
Sorry, I have to go.
What did she ask you to find?
Some ancient religious book.
Maybe she wants to be a fortune teller.
No, that's impossible.
That's strange. Let's Cheers.
- Cheers.
- Yeah, cheers.
(door creaking)
Ines, where have you come from?
Just the night market. I had
to get a book from my friend.
Okay, well, let's have dinner together.
No, you guys have a good
dinner. I've got work to do.
What about Martin?
He's not hungry.
He had some milk and went to bed.
And then there were two.
God, Sylvie. It shouldn't
be like this yet, should it?
I know you're upset, but you
should have seen this coming.
What do you mean?
You need to spend more time with Martin.
You know he looks up to you.
He just wants to make you proud of him.
Okay, fine.
I'll talk to him after dinner.
Yeah, thank you.
No problem.
(door creaking)
Mom?
Sylvie?
(wind howling)
(spray hissing)
(door slamming)
I know you're not sleeping.
I'm sorry if I upset you.
You don't believe me.
If you loved me, you'd believe me.
Okay, so tell me.
I'll listen.
Really, dad?
Ah.
Hmm. Of course.
(suspenseful music)
(dramatic music)
Grandpa told me. It's this
woman who used to work for him.
One night he was drinking
and he tried to do
something really bad to her.
She was pregnant, but grandpa
had not done anything yet.
But she had a heart attack and died.
Grandpa said it was years
before we came to Cambodia
and he didn't want you to know about it.
So he gave her family
money to not tell anyone.
(Ines gasping) (water splashing)
And what else did grandpa say?
Grandpa didn't tell me anymore
because the woman's ghost
kept on coming to hurt him.
Grandpa said we should be
careful of her ghost's husband.
He was a soldier and he knows black magic.
Mom help me.
Ines.
Dad.
There was someone pushing
my head into the water.
- What are you doing?
- And the tub
it's full of eels.
Dad, if you don't believe me, just look.
The room is full of insects, look.
Dad, Ugh.
Fine. Forget about the garbage.
At least look in the tub.
Look, it's full of eels. I swear.
We are guess in Cambodia.
This is not like back in France.
I expected better from you.
There's a lot of history in this country
and so much to learn.
Look at (indistinct) and all
the incredible architecture.
These are your ancestors too, Ines.
Fill your head with important things,
not this superstitious trash.
Even your mother didn't use
to bother with stuff like this.
(gentle music)
Mom.
Sylvie.
(dramatic music)
[TV] I wanna start
with this incredible piece
that tells the whole story, as you said,
from these brand new
memoirs that have come out,
that each have a little piece.
Dad, I'm sorry Dad,
don't be angry with me.
I don't wanna talk about this
anymore. I've said my peace.
Don't you think you should
be taking this more seriously?
Sylvie gives birth in two weeks.
It's about time you start
doing more to help her.
But Dad.
I know, Dad.
I'm tired.
I'm off to bed.
Mom. Seriously?
I'm not crazy. Look at this.
Okay, I mean,
this could just be an allergy.
But honestly, I..
Okay, I'm going to bed now.
(door slamming)
Maybe Martin was right. (Suspenseful music)
(person thumping)
You beat my wife to death.
My unborn child also died.
Your children must pay us back.
(dramatic music)
(birds howling)
(Sylvie sobbing)
It hurts.
(door slamming)
I am depending on you.
I just can't bear the see her like this.
I just, I can't treat her myself.
Don't worry. Sylvie's
heart rate isn't too risky.
Just try to calm down. Okay?
Wait for your children to arrive.
Okay. I trust you.
(footsteps thumping)
Nathan, come in.
We need to make a decision fast
if we're gonna save Sylvie.
How is this even possible?
We went to scan every month.
Every month the babies are healthy.
They were fine.
They can't just vanish.
However, Nathan, just accept the truth.
Don't let Sylvie know this.
We have to save Sylvie.
We don't have much time.
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(car engine revving)
(door slamming)
(footsteps thumping)
(door slamming)
(Sylvie sobbing)
Hello? Can I help you?
Who are you looking for?
(Nathan gasping) (window shattering)
(dramatic music)
(door slamming)
(rain pattering)
(footsteps thumping)
I am full.
Dad, are you eating now?
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(rain pattering)
(water dripping)
Hi, who are you?
Who are you looking for?
(dramatic music)
(door clacking)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
Come on. Don't be so hard on yourself.
You still need to recover.
You taking your medicine?
(Sylvie speaking in tongues)
(Nathan gasping)
Huh?
(ghost creaking)
(Nathan gasping)
(gentle music)
(door slamming)
(door knocking)
Ines, it's me. Can I come in for a bit?
Dad.
Dad?
At first, I didn't believe it either,
but so much stuff has happened.
I believe it. You've seen it too.
Listen to me.
Everybody just needs to
keep their head straight.
Dad, I don't wanna argue
with you. I know you're a doctor.
You don't believe in superstitions,
but everything our family has been through,
it really happened.
It isn't too late, dad.
You're always a hero of this family.
I know you can handle it.
She's right, Nathan.
You can't pretend not to believe it.
(birds chirping)
I've done some research
about the problems
that are happening with your family
and it's beyond my comprehension.
We can't find a way looking at this book.
I don't understand. I
mean, what do you mean?
I found this. It comes
from a very religious book.
You must see it.
I dunno if Gabriel had
a problem with anyone,
but if you wanna know more about this,
start with the graves of
your mother and Gabriel.
(suspenseful music)
(digging bar thudding)
(casket creaking) (Sylvie gasping)
(dramatic music)
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving)
Are you still upset about Gabriel's body?
Listen, I apologize
for not letting you return
the body of your father.
I read the book.
If the corpse is buried before
we get the materials we need
to suppress the ceremony,
we can't touch the body.
The problem will get worse.
Well, look, let's just get to this place
and find a solution to all of this.
According to my sources,
there's a Hindu priest
and a Buddhist monk in the Kulen area.
They are the only ones
who can break the curse.
There's only one person
who could have done this.
Well, for now, let's just be careful.
Yeah.
(suspenseful music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(car engine revving)
(car engine revving)
(birds chirping)
(doors slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(footsteps thumping)
(dramatic music)
(cow mooing)
What? Hey.
(footsteps thumping)
Thus again.
Hey, is this the (indistinct)?
(cow mooing)
(dramatic music)
Whoa, whoa. Okay. Okay.
Wait, Nathan, get off me.
What are you doing?
Nathan.
Nathan.
(distant chattering)
(traditional music)
Help, help me someone please.
You guys are insane.
Help me, (sobbing) someone.
Help me, please help me.
Help me.
(Sylvie screaming) (axe thudding)
(suspenseful music)
(cow mooing)
(gentle music)
This is for you.
(cow mooing)
This is not surprising.
What you just saw was a belief.
It's called the master
offering, or simply offer.
The villages saw this girl without a head,
but according to the belief,
the monster was clinging to her head.
If the ceremony were
not performed correctly,
this would have come to pass.
So you behead us and we give you money?
Sorry.
You don't understand.
It isn't a joke. You could have died.
Said Sylvie is followed by
demon. Do you know why?
I'm not a God.
What I know is limited
and because my villagers don't sin,
don't kill animals, don't destroy nature,
their eyes are brighter
than outsiders like you.
We are ugly, but our hearts are pure.
I'm sorry, but can I ask a question?
We came here looking for help
because my family have so many problems
that we, we just can't explain.
It's, it's very difficult to understand.
What is it that makes you so scared?
We believe that someone
may have performed
some kind of ritual on
my husband's parents.
We found their bodies desecrated.
They were buried upside down.
Do people really still
know how to do this magic?
You know about this?
Please, if you know
anything, you must tell us.
This is the inversion
of the great rebellion.
It was later called the
reversing of the planet
or the overturned ghost.
The corpse that are taken
to this ceremony are forced
to wonder from innocent to
fierce, from friends to enemies.
What is more dangerous?
They always return to
where they used to live,
like the children and
location that he remembers.
I read about it in his book
about the burial of the dead.
It was recorded that the ground
of a funeral pyre can prevent
evil spirits from getting close.
But this work is it for the demon too.
Of course, the pyre is
the holy door for the spirit.
But a demon, a demon is different.
Please tell us what to do.
Right now our kids are at home alone.
How many months has it been since
the body was taken to the mortuary?
Seven. Seven months.
And how many days?
Maybe day four.
Fate is real.
What does that mean?
The dead body counts the days
of the ceremony for seven months
and then after, seven days,
the spirit will become a demon.
- Is that true?
- The land can't be protected
for a long time.
We have another sacred
object to defeat the monster.
Like what? We'll do anything.
Prayer Bakan.
What is Prayer Bakan?
Prayer Bakan is a place
of worship in Pursat province
with a Buddhist statue facing west.
I don't understand.
Khmer archeology has
a sacred culture beyond
what most people know.
Temple reach ceremony was
held for great religious offerings
for the defense of the country.
This is why the Buddhist
statue was erected facing west.
There are the temples of (indistinct)
And Prayer Bakan at what
Bakan Pursat province.
So what should we do?
In desperation, Bakan,
the first sun stone pillar to be used
to suppress the ceremony
was destroyed by pul pot.
And if the statue had remained,
only water washed away from
its feet would have been able
to suppress the ceremony.
Maybe this is all predestined fate.
Is this, is this really a dead end?
I think you should go there.
But Camp Pagoda, Pursat province.
The big statue was destroyed,
but I believe that the
smartest statues made from it
hold the same properties.
But you guys have to escape tonight.
- What do you mean?
- I feel like dangerous things
are coming after you tonight.
(dramatic music)
(birds chirping)
(door slamming)
(suspenseful music)
(car engine revving)
(knife thudding) (dramatic music)
(mannequin thudding)
Forgiveness should
be exempt from restraint.
I don't hurt women.
If you want to be happy in the future,
don't get involved in
other people's stories
unless you want to die.
(dramatic music)
(gentle music)
You know, I'm really
worried about the children.
We should go home soon.
She said we need an artifact.
She sounded pretty serious.
Look, if we believe her, then
we have three more days.
However, we will return
before the day she told us.
How is any of this happening?
We'll get through this. Trust me.
(gentle music)
(thunderstorm rumbling)
(suspenseful music)
(rain pattering) (swing creaking)
Ines, Ines.
Hmm? What's up?
Do you hear that music?
Oh, go to bed. You're imagining things.
- Ines, listen.
- Stop it.
I'm trying to sleep.
(swing creaking) (rain pattering)
(dramatic music) (swing creaking)
(dramatic music)
(dramatic music)
(dramatic music) (Martin breathing heavily)
(dramatic music)
Why are you sitting here all alone?
You like these old programs, do you?
How about some food, you hungry?
Ines, I have a game
I want to play with you.
What game?
(dramatic music)
Martin.
Martin.
What is this?
Where you taking me?
Answer me.
What are you doing?
Let me go.
(light shattering)
(dramatic music)
(car engine revving)
(lights shattering)
(doors slamming)
(house exploding)
(footsteps thumping)
(dramatic music)
(ghost howling)
(Sylvie groaning)
Oh my, my stomach.
Oh.
What do we do now?
There's nothing we can
do right now except pray
that everything is gonna be okay.
We must remain strong.
(Sylvie groaning)
(door creaking)
Did you guys get anything
related to the body of Bakan?
Do you understand?
Yes, I understand.
Here, but I dunno if it's pure or not.
(Sylvie screaming)
What the heck is going on?
What is happening to her belly?
Because of this, my
mother was very concerned.
She listened to all of you.
She believed that a monster
would be born in her womb.
We can't let them make the ceremony.
That's why she sent me here.
She also held a ceremony to assist me.
Ceremony?
They would try to take her.
They want the abstract
spirit growing inside of her.
- That's insane.
- You're right.
Even more crazy if the
ceremony is to be done,
they'll need to operate
on her abdomen awake
so that this invisible spirit can be born.
I used to read about this in
books, but I never expected
people still use such
ancient magic rituals.
God, - If this ceremony
is successful,
this abstract spirit will give
birth to unspeakable horrors.
So what do we do?
(suspenseful music)
(floor knocking)
Wait.
Here.
I think there is something under.
(floor thudding)
I never knew this house had a basement.
I will go down below and
try my best to suppress them.
You guys must protect her at all costs.
(dramatic music)
I will go with you.
(water dripping)
(footsteps thumping)
(door creaking)
(dramatic music)
Oh, Nathan, my stomach
is, is starting again.
I can feel it.
(gentle music)
(dramatic music)
- Dad.
- Martin, where have you been?
Mom?
Oh god. Oh, my (indistinct) are fine.
You're so worried about (indistinct).
We're so relieved to see you're okay
Mom.
Are you hurt?
Dad?
I'll help mom get rid of her stomach ache.
She'll no longer have any pain.
(Nathan screaming) (Nathan thudding)
(Sylvie gasping)
(distant chattering)
(door creaking)
(footsteps thumping)
Help.
What? What are you doing?
What is this?
Someone...
(wind howling)
This hell will end here.
(gun firing)
(dramatic music) (water splashing)
(gun firing) (dramatic music)
Just get outta here.
You can't help anything.
I'll find a way to help
you, promise I'll be back.
(dramatic music)
(reciting indistinctly)
(fists thudding)
(water dripping)
Kids like you do not deserve
this one-legged weight magic.
(dramatic music)
(water splashing)
(wind howling)
(grunting) (water splashing)
(knife thudding)
(wind howling)
(water bubbling)
(Sylvie grunting)
(indistinct chattering)
(dramatic music)
(knife thudding)
That little statue was
just a small part of Bakan's body,
but this knife is made from his core.
You are evil.
(knife thudding)
(Sylvie screaming)
(ghost screaming)
(gentle music)
(gentle music)
(birds chirping)
(car engine revving)
(dramatic music)
(bird cawing)
(Martin gasping)
Help please, help.
Help me, help.
Help me.
(gentle music)
